Summary

God permits the devil to act because He preserves the freedom granted to human beings and fallen angels, while giving believers grace to overcome evil. In Philippi, Saint Paul expelled the spirit of divination from an enslaved girl in the name of Jesus Christ, rejecting demonic testimony even when it spoke truthfully. Saul’s consultation with the medium of Endor is introduced as an Old Testament example of a full necromantic séance and the spiritual ruin caused by turning from God.

The question, it seems to me, then shifts to why God allows the devil to act. But this question also takes on a different perspective, because when Christ came into the world to save us, God did not remove our difficulties; He simply gave us His grace so that they could be overcome. This is because freedom is involved. It seems to me that, of the ten problems that trouble mankind, nine can be resolved on the basis of freedom. If we truly grasp what freedom means—this exceedingly great gift of God to human beings and also to the demons, who were once angels but fell—then we will understand why God does not remove the devil and, along with him, his religion: magic.

God leaves him free. But the time will come when He will set everything in order, because this household called the world, the universe, creation, is God’s household. The Master of the house will come and put in their place the mice that are dancing about. Then the devil will go down to Hades, and with him all those who worship him.

Magic is a reality. Magic is the work of the devil. A second question asks: Does the devil possess supernatural powers, and if so, where does he draw these powers from? Does God permit him to have them? The answer, it seems, is the same: God permits it because freedom exists. But where does he obtain these powers? Let us not forget that the devil, being a spirit, has greater capabilities than a human being. I can explain this better with an example.

Suppose, for example, that I am outside and there is an electric lamp here—or better, a motor. This motor sets certain things in motion, while I remain outside with the switch in my hand.

The person inside cannot see me. I turn on the switch, the motor starts running, and the motor sets some machinery in motion. Naturally, the person inside will say, “What an astonishing thing! How did that happen?” He says this because he cannot see me outside and does not know many of the things that I, being outside, know.

In the same way, the devil is invisible; he is a spirit. We do not see him. If today you were to see a table moving, then of course, because you could not see who was moving it, you would say, “How is that moving?” If you saw a person moving it, there would be nothing strange about it. We do not see the devil, and so he can do certain astonishing things before our eyes precisely because he remains unseen.

But he is not so great, nor is the devil some god opposed to God, as though he were simply another God standing over against God. No. We do not believe in two opposing divine principles. The devil is a creature, a fallen angel who wants to destroy God’s creation. That is all he is. The devil’s powers are therefore entirely limited—and, if you like, even ridiculous. The things he does, as we shall see when we discuss spiritualism, are ridiculous things, utterly ridiculous. The devil does not possess much power. He merely has more power than a human being, but not very much more. So limited is the devil’s authority, our Lord Jesus Christ tells us, that even to enter the swine—the pigs—he must first receive permission from Christ. That is the extent of his authority. The devil has little power. Let us not be afraid of him.

We are afraid, I say again, that we may be seized by a kind of fear of demons. That, then, is the background.

Now let us come to our main subject. As we said last time, one particular form of magic that requires closer examination is necromancy. Necromancy is divination that attempts to accomplish its purpose by questioning the spirits of the dead. Today it is no longer called necromancy but bears the well-known name of spiritualism. And it seems to me that all of us, more or less, must have heard something about spiritualism.

To put it in simpler terms, it is what people mean when they say, “I went to a medium,” or, “I am going to a medium.” Of course, the medium is only one part of spiritualism, as we shall see shortly. Spiritualism is the attempt by a human being to communicate with the spirits of the dead and, through them, to learn the answers to various questions about life, philosophy, and science—even, if you like, questions of metaphysics: what lies beyond this life, whether another world exists, how those who go there are faring, and so forth.

It arises from man’s curiosity to know the future and to learn what lies beyond him. He therefore seeks a way to question the spirits of the dead. My dear friends, spiritualism is extremely ancient; it is nothing new. It is as old as mankind upon the earth and has always gone hand in hand with idolatry. From the moment the descendants of Adam forgot the true God, spiritualism immediately appeared. That is why we encounter spiritualism in every idolatrous religion, where it constitutes...

...the heart, the essence, and the very marrow of those religions. Even in the ancient Greek religion, the religion of our ancestors, spiritualism occupied the central place. We see this in the Oracle of Delphi, which was a place of pilgrimage for all the Greeks. Apollo was worshipped there, and people questioned Apollo through the Pythia.

The Oracle of Delphi, the last stronghold of idolatry, closed sometime in the sixth century. In essence, one might have said that paganism—that is, idolatry—had died. I want us to understand only this: idolatry and spiritualism do not merely go side by side; spiritualism lies at the very heart of idolatry. Someone might say that, with the closing of the Oracle of Delphi, the closing of the philosophical school at Athens under Justinian, and the closing of all the pagan temples—especially the Greek pagan sites within the Byzantine Empire—paganism and idolatry must have died. But they did not die. No, idolatry is still alive. Worse still, it has made its way into the Christian Church. Christians today live like idolaters when they are ignorant of the content of their faith and give in to all the compromises the devil sets before them. What, I ask you, is this? Is it not a new form of idolatry? And since we are living in a state of new idolatry, it is only natural that the heart of idolatry—spiritualism—should return as well. This is the phenomenon we now observe among Christian peoples.

It is truly unacceptable for Christians to occupy themselves with spiritualism, and to do so with such intensity. I collect clippings from the press, and I read them and make notes, because the press writes a great deal about this. I quote from a newspaper: “According to the most conservative estimates, around five million Americans are currently involved in spiritualism.” Five million! In Great Britain, fourteen bishops—prelates of the Anglican Church—are involved in the same thing.

This is decadence. When you see even clergymen becoming involved in spiritualism, it means utter disgrace; it means that every conception of Christianity has been lost. In America, a Protestant pastor who is also a medium receives messages from his deceased son, who took his own life the previous year. Another Protestant clergyman believes that the founders of the great religions—such as Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and Buddha—were actually mediums who communicated with the dead.

And now, from the newspaper Kathimerini, dated September 21, 1960: “Spiritualism may prove to be the salvation of the world,” Lord Dowding declared. The salvation of the world! “People find the teachings of the Church inadequate”—as though the teachings and doctrines of the Church were no longer enough. “They are turning away from priests and toward scientists, while the teaching of science is fundamentally materialistic. Ultimately, it will be the spiritualists, through their contact after death with the world of souls, who will draw nearer to the truth and succeed in spreading it throughout the world.” Lord Dowding spoke before two thousand spiritualists...

...from twenty-nine countries, who had assembled at Caxton Hall in Westminster for the opening of the congress of the International Spiritualist Federation. As you can see, my dear friends, spiritualism is a reality. Of course, if we remove from every spiritualist manifestation whatever fraud and deception may be present—for these certainly do exist—there still remains a portion, however small, that is real. My dear friends, we cannot ignore this reality; and since it is real, we must examine it. Holy Scripture speaks to us about spiritualism and tells us many things, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. We shall confine ourselves to the passage I asked you to find. We will read it, and you will immediately see an incident involving a spiritualist manifestation—take care: not a spiritual manifestation, but a spiritualist one, for these are two very different things. Let us read. The Apostle Paul is in Philippi in Macedonia. Timothy and Silas are with him. There he had already founded the first Christian...

...Church in Europe. The days were passing peacefully and quietly in the great city of Philippi, which was also a Roman colony.

A slave girl who had a spirit of divination brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” She did this for many days. But Paul, deeply troubled, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. When her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. Bringing them before the magistrates, they said, “These men, being Jews, are greatly disturbing our city. They proclaim customs that it is not lawful for us, as Romans, to accept or observe.” The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the magistrates tore the garments from them and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

After inflicting many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such an order, he put them into the innermost prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. It was one trial among the many trials endured by the great Apostle.

One day, we are told, as Paul and Silas were going together to the appointed place of prayer, a slave girl suddenly came out through the doorway of a house, stood in the middle of the road, and then followed behind them—“following Paul,” as the text says, right on their heels.

“These men are servants of the Most High God, who have come to proclaim to us the way of salvation.” The Apostle shook his head. What could he say? He remained silent and went on. The next day, as they passed that way again, she once more rushed into the road and repeated the same words. This went on for a third day and a fourth, until “Paul, greatly troubled,” became indignant and weary; his soul could no longer endure the situation. He turned around and said, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her and never return to her again.” What did this girl have, that the words spoken by the Apostle took effect? As the sacred text tells us, she was possessed by a spirit of divination.

She had a spirit of Python. In the mythology of Delphi, Python was the sacred serpent said to inspire the diviners. According to the myth, Apollo killed Python and in its place appointed the Pythia, who uttered various oracles to people concerning the future. She too was a diviner. So when the text says that this young servant, this slave girl, practiced divination and had a spirit of Python, it shows that she was a medium—a person involved, to use modern language, in spiritualism. But how could this girl have known that these men were servants of God?

And how did she know that they had come to proclaim the way of salvation to the people? How could she have known? The one dwelling within her knew it very well. And here is the second point. The Apostle addresses the girl—or rather, he addresses the one within the girl—and says to him, “In the name of Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ—the all-powerful name of Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, when treating the evil eye, do not use those things I spoke about last time, whatever they may be. Use only the name of Jesus Christ. Make the sign of the Cross over the afflicted person, say the Lord’s Prayer or another prayer—above all, the Lord’s Prayer. If you wish, anoint the person with a little oil from the vigil lamp.

Make the sign of the Cross over him with a cross and say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Do not mix in any of the other things prescribed by charms against the evil eye. The all-powerful name of Christ will act. And here we see it. Who was the one inside the girl? None other than the devil. The devil departed. When the girl’s masters, who had been exploiting her, realized what had happened—for, as the text says, “she brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling”; the whole crowd gathered because they were exploiting her—they saw that their hope of profit was gone. So they seized Paul and Silas. Timothy was not there at that moment, since this incident must certainly have taken place considerably later. They beat Paul and Silas, brought them before the city authorities, and from there they ended up in prison.

This incident presents the reality of spiritualism to us very clearly, almost in relief. Notice this: does the Apostle deny the reality of spiritualism? No, my beloved. Does he say that all of this is a myth? Does he say, “People of Philippi, do not listen to this girl, because everything she says is a fairy tale”? No. Instead, he turns toward the one speaking these things—the devil—acknowledging his presence. The Apostle could very easily have taken advantage of this, had he been “clever”—may the Holy Apostle forgive me for saying so—“clever,” in quotation marks, in the way many people are.

Many people think they should take advantage of whatever circumstances and opportunities life places before them. The Apostle could have exploited this incident and said, “People of Philippi, all of you, from the least to the greatest, believe this girl. And notice that she is telling the truth: we really are servants of the Most High God, and we have come to proclaim to you the way of salvation. So here I am, ready to preach that way of salvation to you.” Tell me, please: within a week, would the whole city have become Christian? Would the Apostle Paul have baptized all the Philippians as Christians? Certainly. But he was not “clever,” again in quotation marks. He preferred to cast the devil out of the girl and go to prison.

What does this mean? It means that Christianity has absolutely no fellowship with spiritualism—not the slightest. Christianity has no need of a recommendation from the devil. In the same way, when the devil, speaking through the demon-possessed man of the Gerasenes, called the Lord the Son of God, the Lord rebuked him. And at Capernaum too, when the demon-possessed called Him the Son of God, the Lord rebuked them. Christ has no need of the devil’s testimony. What would the devil have done afterward through the divining girl? First he would offer a favorable recommendation, and then he would accuse the Apostle. This is his method, my beloved. Perhaps someone may wonder, “Then why did the demon say those things?”

Was it not to his advantage that their preaching should be heard by the Philippians? The devil is cunning. He works like a fisherman. When a fisherman puts bait on a hook, he certainly does not do it in order to feed the fish. He puts it there to catch them. So it is here as well. When the devil releases certain truths through spiritualism, he does not do so because they are true. He is the father of lies, as the Lord said. Yet when he wants to exploit a situation, he does not hesitate to use the truth.

Customers know that some merchants will always try to sell the poor-quality goods and keep the good ones back. Yet when a customer approaches a crate of apples, the merchant may say, “I have some better apples. Do not take those.” And indeed, he brings out some better apples from the back. In this way he wins the customer’s trust. The customer thinks, “This greengrocer is looking after me. He cares about me.” It is another matter whether those apples are really much better, or whether the merchant will exploit the customer’s trust on a later occasion. Often the merchant does not act out of sincerity; he does it to win the customer. The devil does the same. He does not speak the truth because he desires truth, but because he wants to win people over. As the Apostle Paul says, we have the nous of Christ, the spiritual intellect, and “we are not ignorant” of Satan’s designs. We must therefore know Satan’s methods and designs, so that we may be able to

avoid the banana peels he so readily scatters across our path. What, then, have we seen so far in the passage we read? Three points. First, spiritualism is a reality. There are people who can say and do astonishing things, as we shall see a little later. Second, the spirits that speak—the spirits with whom spiritualists communicate—are not the spirits of dead human beings, but demons. We shall see this more clearly further on.

Good. As a rule, then, they are demons. Let us make that clear. And third, there is absolutely no fellowship between spiritualism and Christianity. “What fellowship,” says the Apostle Paul, “has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? What fellowship is there between the table of demons and the table of the Lord?” What relationship can there be between light and darkness, between the devil and Christ—Belial, Beelzebul, Baal—and between the table used at spiritualist séances, about which we shall speak shortly, and the table of the Lord, the Holy Table within the sanctuary, upon which the most sacred Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is celebrated? How can you claim that you will receive Holy Communion and be a Christian, and yet

go and consult demons at séance tables, through mediums, and through all the other devices and contrivances of spiritualism? But now it is time for us to look more closely at what spiritualistic phenomena are.

Before we classify and describe these spiritualistic phenomena, however, allow me first to remove any doubt that the whole matter might simply be fraud. As we have said, a fairly large proportion of it is indeed fraud. Someone may present himself as a medium and pretend to do all sorts of things, often using a great deal of deception. Nevertheless, as we have said, spiritualism is a reality. I shall refer to an incident from the Old Testament. There we are given a remarkable description—a description of a complete spiritualist séance. Let me explain at once what a spiritualist séance means.

It is a gathering of people involved in spiritualism, in whose presence spirits or other phenomena appear. When everyone is seated in a circle and invokes the spirits to speak or act, the whole event is called a spiritualist séance. As a rule, then, an invocation of spirits is a spiritualist séance, even if only one person is present. The First Book of Kingdoms in the Old Testament gives us an account of just such a séance—one that even modern spiritualists, we might say, would envy. Rather than read the whole passage to you, I shall recount it and quote only certain phrases.

In the eleventh or tenth century before Christ, around 1000 BC, Saul was king of Israel, its first king. He had been anointed by the Prophet Samuel, a most devout man greatly loved by the people. Unfortunately, however, Saul proved impious. His conduct toward David, whom he hunted in order to kill, is well known. It is also known that he slaughtered the high priest and many other priests, enraged because the high priest and the priests had hidden David. For this very reason he incurred the hatred of the people and the disapproval of God. On one occasion, the Philistines declared war against the Hebrews. Saul found himself in a difficult position. He therefore sought to learn, through the channels of faith—from prophets and others—what the outcome of the war would be. But the prophets answered him, “God does not answer. God has turned His face away from you.” Meanwhile, Samuel had died. The Prophet Samuel had died by that time.

At the same time, Saul had decreed that no one in the kingdom of Israel was to practice magic, divination, spiritualism, or anything of that kind, under penalty of death. So there appeared to be no such person anywhere among the people of Israel. In reality, there were some, but they remained hidden; no one dared to come forward openly. In his despair—and here we see what a person may do when God abandons him—Saul decided to seek out a diviner through whom he might learn the outcome of his military campaign. He made inquiries and learned of a woman living in a village called Endor. She was a ventriloquist—that is, a necromancer, a spiritualist, a medium. “Medium” is a foreign word meaning an intermediary, someone who stands between the people asking questions and the spirits. I may say, “Come, spirit, and tell me this,” yet hear nothing. Mediums, these intermediaries, are people who are, we might say, favored by Satan. They are Satan’s priests, through whom people receive information. This woman, then, was such a ventriloquist—a medium.

Saul changed his clothes, took a few servants with him, and in the middle of the night went to the home of this spiritualist. He knocked at the door, and the woman appeared. Dressed as a peasant rather than as commander-in-chief, Saul said to her, “I want you to call up the spirit of the Prophet Samuel for me.” “Oh, no! Do you not know King Saul’s decree, which forbids such a thing under penalty of death? No, no,” she told him. “Please, do not set a snare for my life.” Saul answered, “As the Lord God lives”—that is, “I swear to you by the Lord God that absolutely nothing will happen to you. Only, please, call up the spirit of Samuel for me.” The woman was persuaded. And now, if you please, the spiritualist séance begins. I would like to take it verse by verse from Holy Scripture, so that you may see what happens here.

She fell into a trance, became hypnotized, and called up the spirit of Samuel. “And the woman saw Samuel.” She saw him, but Saul did not; only the woman could see him. “And she cried out with a loud voice, and the woman said to Saul, ‘Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!’” “Oh, what have you done to me?” she exclaimed. “You are Saul!” How did she recognize him now? The spirit she had invoked informed her that the man questioning her was King Saul. She was terrified and thought, “Now I am lost. The king has set a trap for me.” But he said to her again, “As the Lord God lives, I swear to you by God that nothing will happen to you.”

“Only tell me what I ask you, and ask Samuel for me.” “And the king said to her,” and so forth. What did he say to this woman? “What do you see?” he asked. She answered, “I have seen gods ascending out of the earth.” By “gods,” she meant spirits. “I see spirits rising from the earth,” she said. You see? Gods—spirits. “And he said to her, ‘Whom do you recognize?’” In other words, “Whom do you recognize among them?” “And she said to him, ‘I see an upright man ascending out of the earth, and he is wrapped in a double cloak.’” She said, “Among them I see an upright, tall man wearing a double cloak.”

a kind of cloak—that is, a kind of garment or attire. “And Saul knew that it was Samuel.” Saul recognized him as Samuel because Samuel had worn such clothing while he was alive. “And he bowed with his face to the ground and did reverence to him.” He knelt down and did reverence to Samuel.

Though he could not see him, mind you; only the woman could see him. “And Samuel said.” Now Samuel—the spirit—answers: “Why have you troubled me by bringing me up?” Why have you caused me this trouble? You disturbed me and made me come up from the earth.

Last time, we spoke about that pact with the devil. There is a phrase in the Solomonic text where the devil says to the magician who summons him, “Why did you call me and disturb me?” And I told you that when we came to speak about Saul and Samuel, you would remember it. You see? It is the very same phrase. And Saul said, “I am greatly distressed.” I am deeply troubled. The foreigners—the Philistines—have attacked me and declared war against me. So please tell me—this is why I summoned you—what will happen next? And Samuel said. Now he answers: “Why do you ask me?”

“The Lord has departed from you.” The Lord has left you. You see, this is not Samuel; it is the devil. The devil says that God has left you. It is just as with the girl at Philippi. What does he say there? “These men are servants of the Most High God.” That is why the devil is regarded, and is sometimes called, the first theologian on earth, the first to make use of the name of God: “Did God truly speak to our first parents? Did God say that you must not eat of the fruit?” He spoke about God—the first theologian on earth. So that proves nothing. A person may speak about God, may be a theologian, and still be a devil, you see? “And the Lord has departed from you and has gone over to your neighbor.” The Lord, he says, has left you and is with your neighbor—He is on David’s side.

“And the Lord has done to you as the Lord spoke by my hand: the Lord will tear the kingdom from your hand and give it to your neighbor, David.” You will lose your kingdom, and David will receive it. He gives Saul information: “Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord and did not carry out His fierce wrath against Amalek, the Lord has done this to you today. And the Lord will deliver Israel with you into the hands of the foreigners. And tomorrow you”—notice this—“tomorrow you and your sons with you shall fall, and the Lord will deliver the camp of Israel into the hands of the foreigners.”

Tomorrow you will give battle; you and your whole family will be killed, and the foreigners—the Philistines—will take possession of your camp. I will not go into all that Saul suffered afterward. He collapsed unconscious—a man six feet tall—and he had not eaten for two days. They offered him food, but he refused. Then they gave him something to eat, he recovered, and went back. The following morning he gave battle, and both he and his entire family were killed. There, then, you have a complete spiritualist séance. The spirits are summoned; the spirit requested appears, gives information, and the information proves true. And this, mind you, is in the Old Testament, in 1 Samuel, chapter 28. What are we to conclude? Spiritualism, then, is a reality.

A reality. So let us look at some spiritualist phenomena, so that we may understand, at least in broad terms, how spiritualism operates.

To begin, I should tell you that the rationalism and unbelief that swept through Europe and America with the Renaissance pushed spiritualism aside. Then a chance event brought modern spiritualism back to Europe and America. This is what happened. It was December 1847. A family came to live in a village in New York State called Hydesville.

The family consisted of the father, John Fox, the mother, and three daughters. They rented a house, and meanwhile the eldest daughter married and moved away. After her marriage, one day one of the two younger girls—one was fifteen and the other twelve—cracked her knuckles, as children do, and grown-ups sometimes as well. Crack, crack, crack. When she cracked her fingers, she heard from somewhere in the room: crack, crack, crack, crack. Each time she cracked her knuckles, she heard a corresponding number of knocks.

She did it again, and the knocks sounded again. How strange. Then she did it very softly, so that it could not be heard—and the answer came just as softly. “Well now,” she thought, “someone can hear and see me. When I do it loudly, the answer is loud. When I do it softly so that no one can hear, someone must be watching me crack my knuckles, even though there is no sound. So someone can hear me and see me.” She went and told her mother what had happened. It happened many times, and little by little it became something of a game for them. At the same time, however, other strange things began happening in the house: loud noises were heard, and furniture was overturned. Naturally, they were alarmed at first. Later, however, they began to grow accustomed to it, and this family

even came to consider itself privileged because it could communicate with some unknown being. The younger daughters even gave this unknown being a name: Cloven Foot. Cloven Foot. A goat has a cloven hoof, you see. Cloven Foot. And they would summon Cloven Foot for various conversations. What sort of conversations? Conversations conducted through agreed signals. Since this unknown being could answer with knocks, they would say, “Listen, Cloven Foot.”

“Tell us, will it rain tomorrow? If it will rain, knock several times. If it will not, knock only once.” And it would knock—and the next day it would rain. In this way, they established communication through the knocks.

To make a long story short, the phenomenon expanded into other manifestations. They invited the neighbors, and the matter became known. Later it was discovered that other people also possessed such abilities. This new beginning—for such things sometimes spread like a fever—was carried into Europe and Scotland as well. Thus, in recent times—that is, over these last centuries—spiritualism gained a fresh start. Spiritualism is divided—or rather, it progressively produced many extraordinary phenomena, so that we now divide its manifestations into various categories.

The first category is rapping spiritualism—that is, communication with spirits by means of knocks or taps. Next comes automatic-writing spiritualism: hands write, either the medium’s hand or some unknown hand, upon boards, paper, or glass. Of course, once mediums discovered automatic writing, that did not mean rapping ceased to be used. It was simply added to it. Then a third form appeared: spiritualism through the invasion of the personality. In other words, the spirit takes possession of the medium’s personality; the medium loses his own self, and another self begins to speak.

Try to understand what this means. I have a self that constitutes my personality, my existence, and my self-awareness. So do you; every human being has a self that constitutes his personality. This self gives me my self-awareness. If it is pushed aside, I lose that self-awareness. I become nothing—a rag, a ruin. So when a spirit comes, an alien self, and takes the place of my own self, my self is pushed to the side. The alien self speaks, while my own self merely watches, unable to resist. This, my dear friends, is what happened to the girl with the spirit of divination at Philippi. It was not the girl who spoke; it was the self of the evil spirit. So it was also with those possessed by demons

in the region of the Gergesenes, in Capernaum, and elsewhere. It was not the possessed person who spoke, but the devil. This, then, is spiritualism through the invasion of the medium’s personality by another, alien self. A fourth form is clairvoyant spiritualism, in which the medium sees the spirit, as did the medium in the Old Testament passage we have just read. Others present at spiritualist séances may also see the spirit. There is likewise materializing spiritualism. This is when a spirit takes material form, so that one can place a thermometer on it and measure its pulse. You may ask, “Can things really go that far?” They have gone that far, and these things have even been published.

Let us look, then, at some examples within these four major categories. Without dividing them too strictly, I will simply relate one incident after another. The ABC of spiritualism, so to speak, is communication through knocks, and above all the movement of tables. A small table, much like this one, is placed in the middle, and those involved in spiritualism gather around it. A medium must normally be present. If there is no known medium, they may try to discover whether one of those present has the ability. They place their hands on the little table, and gradually it begins to tremble—to tremble.

They remove their hands and step away from the table, spreading out around the room. The little table begins to move and move. I hope I do not damage this table or anything on it while demonstrating. It moves and spins, spins around, begins to float in the air, rises to the ceiling and clings there, comes down again, and settles back on the floor. At other times it crashes down with a great noise and shatters. This is considered so common and so elementary that it is, so to speak, the alphabet of spiritualism. But the little table does more than move. It also gives information. It is asked questions and gives answers by means of signals and knocks. Or it rises and falls, rises and falls, striking the floor with one of its legs.

Knocking sounds are heard from within the wood. “Little table, tell us. Go on, tell us.”

“What will happen with that court case? Will we lose it or win it? If we are going to lose, answer with five knocks. If we are going to win, answer with ten.” And then, mind you, you hear the little table answer: five knocks. We are going to lose the case—and indeed, we lose it.

We also have furniture moving inside a house. The furniture may be shifted about, overturned, and even carried out of the house. In a small book on spiritualism, Father Pachylopoulos recounts the following incident. There was a Greek man who had lived in America and came from a village in Epirus. He returned to settle in his village, and he was involved in spiritualism. The village priest kept telling him, “My good man, leave those things alone. They are demons.” But he would not give them up. Then one morning he found all his furniture outside the house, though no human hand had moved it. He put everything back inside. The following morning, it was all outside again.

Every day it went in and out, in and out. Naturally, the furniture was also being damaged. The priest said to him, “Haven’t I told you not to meddle with the things of the devil? Listen: take some chalk or a piece of charcoal and mark a cross on every object in your house.” My dear friends, the next morning, everything bearing a cross had remained inside. Anything he had forgotten to mark with a cross had been carried out through the door. Likewise, objects may be observed to increase or decrease in weight. An object weighing one hundred kilograms may weigh only one, while an object weighing one kilogram may weigh one hundred. Musical compositions can also be heard. Musical harmonies may come from the ceiling.

Music may be heard coming from an empty basket. The levitation of the intermediary—the medium—is also observed. Little by little, the medium rises into the air. There may also be loud knocks or showers of stones. I remember reading in the newspaper some years ago about a house in Thessaloniki. At dawn one morning, its terrified occupants rushed outside after a violent barrage of stones struck their roof tiles. They searched for those responsible but could not find them. So they said, “Who knows what late-night troublemakers or hooligans passed by and threw stones at our house?” Many roof tiles had been broken. The next morning, there was another violent barrage.

They rushed outside, hoping to catch those responsible, but there was neither sight nor sound of anyone. It was a real mystery. The same thing happened on the third morning. The people went to the police. The police actually posted guards, yet every morning the roof tiles were pelted with stones, without the slightest human presence being detected. It was explained as a spiritualistic phenomenon.

“Haunted houses,” you will say. Well, yes, my dear friends, haunted houses do exist. Spiritualists claim that houses become haunted when savage scenes, especially bloody ones, have taken place there; when greedy people have died in them; or when great immorality has occurred there. They say that the souls become restless spirits and wander about inside. But do souls truly become restless spirits? We shall examine that next time. For now, however, I tell you plainly: no, my dear friends. These are demons pretending to be the souls of the dead, supposedly wandering as ghosts, and their purpose is to frighten people and stir up trouble.

In such houses, people hear knocks and feel touches, as though invisible hands were caressing them. The walls may creak, and so may the roof tiles and other things. The spirits may even appear as animals. Spiritualists say that when spirits appear in animal form, they are inferior spirits. We know that it is the devil simply changing his form. There is also spirit-writing, or direct writing, in which a hand writes upon paper.

A little hand may make some movement. Allow me to tell you about an incident of my own. I may have told it to two, three, or four people; I do not remember telling it to any more than that. Well, now let us tell it to a larger audience. It is entirely personal, something that once happened to me. It is not that I possess any such ability—God preserve me—but this happened to me before the eyes of another man. I was serving at Saint Anthony’s in 1961 or 1962. One morning, before the congregation had arrived, I was in the sanctuary serving Matins. The south door was open.

It was time for the Matins Gospel. The priest came to read the Gospel, standing to the right as we face the Holy Table—that is, toward the south side. I held the Gospel book, read the Matins Gospel, closed it, and then opened it again. An elderly man was present—a man who is still alive. I do not know his name, but even if I did, I would not tell you. The blessed man was standing in a side passage, from which he could look diagonally into the sanctuary. And he saw something. What did he see? He saw a hand above my head blessing me, and he told Father Christos, the Cypriot priest who was there.

Of course, one might have concluded, “Father Athanasios is a saint, and that is why a hand appeared above his head to bless him.” But, my dear friends, Glory to God, God protected me from such a thing. It was a spiritualistic phenomenon. Who knows what sort of man that witness was? I can know only one thing: he was not merely a Christian in outward appearance—though I do not mean that he lived a spiritual life. He did not. And since he did not live a spiritual life, anything was possible. I said this even at the beginning of our subject. What might this incident have caused? First, I might have come to believe that I was a saint. And woe to me, then—what might have happened to me! Fortunately, during those days, as time passed and I examined myself, I could see that spiritually I was in a rather low state.

When I learned about it—they told me several days later—I said, “Goodbye to all that!” I was not disturbed. I examined myself: what state am I in? Am I in a state of holiness or of sinfulness? I am in a state of sinfulness. Therefore, this could not have come from God. That settled it. It could not be so. It came from another source. A friend asked Father Philotheos Zervakos about it, and he replied, “For God’s sake, for God’s sake, for God’s sake! It is the devil. Father Athanasios must be careful.” And indeed, not for a single moment did I believe that it could have been the hand of God blessing me. It was the devil. Who knows what sort of trap he was setting, what kind of snare he was laying before me? So be very careful, my dear friends—extremely careful.

We also have spirit-voice, a seventh form. What is spirit-voice? It is when the medium speaks, as did the girl with the spirit of divination in Philippi. Other strange and curious things also happen, especially among spiritualists. For example, someone may receive a letter from a dead person, bearing a postmark and stamp and written in the dead person’s handwriting. You may say, “Well, suppose someone wants to produce such a letter. He puts a stamp on it, sends it through the post, and the recipient receives it. He simply imitates the dead person’s handwriting.” No, my dear friends. The letter may contain things that only the deceased could have known. For example: “In the corner of the house, lift up that particular floor tile.”

“I hid a small bundle of gold sovereigns there. Open it up, and you will find them.” The letter arrives through the post bearing a postmark and stamp. The people open the place and find the bundle of gold sovereigns. Likewise, there are intermediary and clairvoyant mediums who claim to see the spirit.

The medium of the Old Testament saw with her own eyes. “What do you see?” Saul asked. “I see spirits, gods, rising from the earth. I see a man standing upright, wearing a double cloak.” This, then, is the clairvoyant form of spiritualism. We also have the materialization of spirits. Crookes, the famous English physicist, also investigated spiritualism.

He himself gives us the following description.

Once—excuse me—in his laboratory, a small cloud appeared, merely a little cloudy patch. It grew and grew, and in the center of this cloud a woman’s face appeared. The entire form continued to grow, and before long a woman stood in front of him. Crookes himself, a scientist of international renown, tells us this. Those who attended secondary school may remember the Crookes tubes used in physics. He says that he placed a thermometer on this woman and measured her temperature; he even took her pulse. She simply did not speak. She opened the door and went out into the courtyard.

She spent time with the family’s young children. This continued every day for two or three years. In the end, she disappeared and never appeared again. Here we have the materialization of spirits: spirits appearing in material form.

We also have the transportation of living people: a person vanishes from here and is found somewhere else. I shall illustrate this with a story. It happened in Italy in 1901. A family had two young boys. It is a long story, so I shall tell you only the essentials. One day they sent the older boy, Alfredo, to buy some wine. They were sitting down to eat and said to the boy, “Run quickly to the grocer and buy some wine. Do not be late; we are already at the table.” The boy left and did not return.

They went to the grocer and asked, “Did Alfredo come here?” “He bought the wine quite some time ago. He took it and left.” They searched everywhere for the boy. That afternoon—the village was by the sea—a fisherman returning from the open sea in his boat found young Alfredo sitting in another boat, still holding the bottle of wine, many kilometers offshore. They asked the terrified child how he had come to be there, out at sea. He replied, “I don’t know. I came out of the grocer’s shop, and then I found myself in the boat. I don’t know.” Such transports have occurred many times in different places.

Then there is telepathy. Telepathy is the transmission of a person’s condition or experience to someone else. I have two or three incidents to tell you, but with these we shall conclude. The first comes from antiquity. There were two friends: one lived in Athens and the other in Megara. The man in Athens saw his friend in a dream, saying to him, “My friend, wake up! Evil men are killing me. Come and save me.” The man awoke. “Of course, it is only a dream, and it is night. My friend would have sent for me otherwise. What can I do? Besides, it is only a dream.” So he lay down and went back to sleep.

The dream returned more intensely. He awoke, but what could he do? He went back to sleep. The dream came a third time, and his friend said, “You are not a good friend. It is too late now. They have killed me. But early in the morning, go out to the city gate facing Megara. A cart will be entering the city there. Search the cart, and you will find me inside.” My dear friends, he went there. He found the cart—and inside it, his friend’s body, cut to pieces.

I heard a politician speaking—someone who, as I told you last time, later even became prime minister. I heard him recount the following incident himself. When he was a young boy, his family had a servant in their home. In those days there were no kerosene heaters, and perhaps even wood-burning stoves and the like were not yet widely used.

They used charcoal braziers. Unfortunately, these still exist in some homes, and people do not understand how dangerous they are. They lay down and fell asleep. Toward dawn, just as the first light was beginning to appear, the boy—the man who is now a politician—woke up and became aware of something.

On the glass door of his room, he saw the servant’s face looking in. The glass was frosted, of course, but when someone presses against frosted glass, the face and its features can be seen. The servant had pressed his nose and forehead against the pane. So the boy called out, “John”—let us suppose his name was John—“John, what do you want?” The face did nothing and said nothing. “John, what do you want? I’m asking you, what do you want?” Still nothing; he did not speak. The boy got up to open the door and see what the servant wanted, standing there looking through the glass like that. But then he saw that no one was behind the door. He went to the servant’s room and knocked, but no one answered. He opened the door and went in. What had happened? The servant was dead.

He lay dead in his bed from the fumes of the charcoal brazier. How, then, had his face appeared on the glass? It was a spiritualistic phenomenon. Now let me tell you another incident of my own, one that terrified me. It was a case of spiritualism. One morning—forgive me, one afternoon—a woman from my neighborhood came to me. This happened here in Larissa about three years ago. She said, “Father, I want you to read a prayer over my son.” I was on my way somewhere at the time; I had some business to attend to, though I no longer remember what it was. “Very well,” I told her, “I’ll come early tomorrow morning. I have to go to 303 to give a lesson. It was summertime. As soon as I finish, I’ll come and read a prayer over your son.” She described her son to me and spoke very highly of him.

I took this red bag of mine that you see here. That morning, before leaving home, I took a Euchologion from my bookcase—a small red book containing the prayers. Pay attention; I stress that it was red. I never carry this Euchologion with me unless I am told that there is a wedding or I am going somewhere to perform a wedding or a Baptism. Then I take it from my bookcase and use it. I repeat: I never carry it with me except on extraordinary and very rare occasions. I put it in my bag, in one of the middle compartments. My bag has four compartments: the first, second, third, and fourth. I put it in the third, one of the middle compartments.

I put it there and left. I went to 303, gave the lesson, and then went to the house. It was around eight o’clock. During the summer we held the lessons at 303 very early, so it was about eight. The woman’s son was a young man in his twenties, perhaps twenty-five. He was asleep on a divan, completely wrapped in a sheet, curled up like a bundle. I felt a little annoyed and thought, “You invited me here, and he is still asleep.” His mother said, “My son is sleeping. Let me go and wake him.” “No, don’t wake him,” I said. “No, I’ll wake him,” she insisted. “Very well,” I said, and went inside. Everything I am telling you is significant; these are not mere details. You will see how they all fit together. I entered the room—apparently it was the sitting room—where he was sleeping on a divan like this one. The young man was an artist.

On the wall he had painted a portrait of his father. I looked at the father’s eyes in the painting: they were demonic eyes. What eyes they were! I said to myself, “My God, what kind of eyes are these? What eyes!” I sat down on a chair. The son suddenly sprang up beneath the sheet, poked his head out, and said harshly to his mother, “What does he want here? Tell him to leave.” I had known the young man before. Let us suppose his name was John, though it was not. “John,” I said, “how are you? Are you all right? Come here and let me have a look at you.” Pay attention: when I entered, he had been asleep.

When he saw me, he rubbed his eyes like this. As people say, he could hardly see yet. And do you know what his first words were? He did not say good morning. His first words were these. My bag was closed, and I had placed it on a low table. “Why did you bring that red book inside your bag?” I thought, “My God, how did he see it? How did he see a red book inside my bag?” I assure you, I felt a chill. I immediately sensed that the devil was standing before me. I wear a small cross, so I slipped my hand inside my clothing and grasped it. I thought, “My God, what will happen next?” Then he seemed to drift into a trance, speaking with such innocence and naturalness, as though absolutely nothing unusual were happening. Absent-mindedly, he repeated, “Why did you bring that red book?” And then he said...

He seemed to be in a trance, staring off into the distance with a vacant gaze. “Of course, all these things—yes, yes—the one within the three, the three within the one, the Holy Trinity, yes, the unity,” he said, as though he were speaking theology. But these were demonic and incoherent words. Then he said, “Oh, oh, oh! What is happening there on page sixty? Who were the people who wrote these things? Oh, what they wrote! Holy men—saints, great men! No, they’re nothing. They aren’t saints at all. They’re nothing.” My dear friends, that page contained exorcisms. I did not know what was on that page at the time. When I returned home, I found that it contained the exorcisms of Basil the Great. Indeed it did. Then he began telling me other things.

He said, “Your mother is just like my mother.” My mother had died in 1950. “Where is my mother, then? What has become of her?” I asked him. “Hmm—ah, wait,” he said. “Wait, wait. Your mother is somewhere high above. I can see her, yes, of course. She is with some good people. Oh, how beautiful it is there! No, they’re nothing, nothing, nothing. They’re people from long ago—old people—wretched and utterly miserable.” Call these the ravings of a madman if you wish. Call them whatever you like. But I ask you: can a madman know what I have inside my bag? He told me that the red book was hidden in the middle of the bag, and he knew what was written on that particular page. Can a madman know such a thing? No, he cannot. And so, my dear friends, let us bring this to a close.

The stories and incidents connected with spiritualism are endless. One thing alone is certain: spiritualism is a reality. It does not merely produce phenomena and give rise to strange incidents; it also has its own teaching, influences people, and goes on to produce monstrous signs and effects, especially within human souls. We shall examine these things next time. We shall also look at a book I have, written by a doctor who was a spiritualist. In it, he tells us how he weighed the soul and how many grams he found it to weigh. We shall also see what he believes about God and about man, together with one or two references he makes to the Holy Synod, and precisely what position Christianity takes

toward spiritualism. Our subject, then, is not finished. We may say that its most important part—the part that will explain to us what spiritualism truly is—will be presented, God willing, next Tuesday.

Είχε πνεύμα πύθωνος. Ο Πύθων, ιερό φίδι κατά τη μυθολογία στους Δελφούς, ήτο εκείνο που ενέπνεε τους μάντεις, και ο Απόλλων, λέει ο μύθος, εφόνευσε τον Πύθωνα και αντ’ αυτού ετοποθέτησε την Πυθία, η οποία έλεγε διαφόρους χρησμούς στους ανθρώπους για τα μέλλοντα. Ήτο και αυτή μαντευομένη. Όταν λοιπόν λέγει εδώ ότι αυτή η παιδίσκη, η υπηρέτρια, η δούλη, ήτο μαντευομένη και έχουσα πνεύμα πύθωνος, φανερώνει ότι ήτο ένα πρόσωπο μέντιουμ. Δηλαδή ασχολείτο, να το πούμε με σύγχρονες λέξεις, με τον πνευματισμόν. Βεβαίως, πού μπορούσε να γνωρίζει η κοπέλα αυτή ότι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί είναι δούλοι του Θεού;

Τι σημαίνει αυτό; Ότι δεν έχει καμία σχέση ο Χριστιανισμός με τον πνευματισμό, ούτε μία. Δεν έχει ανάγκη ο Χριστιανισμός συστάσεως από τον διάβολο. Όπως και ο Κύριος, όταν ο διάβολος μέσω του δαιμονιζομένου των Γεργεσηνών τού έλεγε, τον απεκάλει Υιόν του Θεού. Όπως και στην Καπερναούμ, οι δαιμονιζόμενοι τον απεκάλουν Υιόν του Θεού. Επετίμα αυτούς, μάλλον δηλαδή αυτούς ο Κύριος. Διότι δεν έχει ανάγκη ο Χριστός από τον διάβολο για να μαρτυρήσει. Τι θα έκανε παρακάτω ο διάβολος μέσω της μαντευομένης; Πρώτα έδινε καλές συστάσεις και κατόπιν θα κατηγορούσε τον Απόστολο. Είναι η μέθοδός του, αγαπητοί μου. Ίσως θα γεννηθεί η απορία: «Μα γιατί τότε έλεγε τα λόγια αυτά που έλεγε ο δαίμων;

εμπερασμένη φορά. μιλήσαμε για εκείνο το συμβόλαιο προς τον διάβολο. Εκεί, μια φράση στη Σολομωνική, που λέγει ο διάβολος εις τον καλούντα μάγον: «Γιατί με εκάλεσες και με ενόχλησες;» Και σας είχα πει ότι, όταν θα μιλήσουμε για τον Σαούλ και τον Σαμουήλ, θα το θυμηθείτε αυτό. Βλέπετε; Αυτούσια η φράση. Και είπε Σαούλ: «Θλίβομαι σφόδρα». Είμαι πολύ λυπημένος. Οι αλλόφυλοι, οι Φιλισταίοι, με χτύπησαν, εκήρυξαν τον πόλεμο εναντίον μου. Και πες μου, σε παρακαλώ, γι’ αυτό και σε κάλεσα, τι θα γίνει παρακάτω; Και είπε Σαμουήλ. Απαντάει τώρα: «Ἵνα τί ἐπερωτᾷς με;» Γιατί με ρωτάς;
