Summary

The lecture presents magic as a serious theological and spiritual threat that Christians must understand without underestimating its power. Patristic warnings and the Gospel account of the demon-possessed boy are used to explain differing demonic powers and deceptive phenomena associated with occult practices. Everyday superstitions and forms of divination—including omens, palmistry, Tarot, coffee-ground reading, bird observation, and entrail reading—are condemned as misplaced trust in powers outside God.

Last time we saw how profound the subject of magic really is. It is not something that concerns only uneducated people or old women; it is a matter with theological depth as well. I want us to understand this for one reason alone: so that we may properly assess the presence of the enemy. It is well known that only when a person does not underestimate his enemy’s presence—as Napoleon did not—and does not underestimate the weapons at his enemy’s disposal, can he prevail.

If, on the contrary, he underestimates them, he is certain to risk disaster. Therefore, we must not underestimate the phenomenon and presence of magic. We must look deeply into it and understand what it is, as we began to do last time. This time, with God’s help, we shall continue examining what magic is and the various forms it takes. Even politics has made, and continues to make, use of magic. It is well known that Hitler used magic. That is why he placed the swastika, a symbol of black magic, on his flag. In the beginning, black magic brought Hitler to power.

That man had four magicians serving as advisers on his staff. He consulted them first and only afterward consulted his generals. It is telling that he often began or planned his battles on a Sunday, because that was what his magicians advised him to do. And since magicians naturally have the devil—the devil is their master—Hitler consequently went to the devil. Stalin did the same: he had three full-fledged practitioners of black magic on his staff. Would you like an example closer to our own eyes?

Have you been to Athens? Have you noticed the large hotel called the Hilton? Anyone who has been to Athens will know it, on Kifisias Avenue. It is a little above Evangelismos, on our left as we come down from Kifisia toward Evangelismos. The wall facing Kifisias Avenue has no windows. The whole wall is decorated with strange designs—Kabbalistic designs from the Kabbalah. The Kabbalah is a book of Jewish origin, a magical book; we might call it a kind of—indeed, not merely a kind of—Solomonic magical text. These designs, then, are magical symbols.

Why are those symbols displayed there? The answer is very simple. The people who own such businesses believe that, if their wealth is to remain in their hands, they must use magic to appease dark powers. There is no need for elaborate explanations. When you go down to Athens, you will see all those Kabbalistic, magical symbols before your own eyes. Magic, then, is a serious and far-reaching matter, and we have a great battle to fight throughout our lives—from seemingly small things, such as removing the evil eye, perhaps all the way to the kind of magic encountered at such hotels. And if we ever wished to enter the circle of those people, we might find a fortress standing before us.

I said that I would read you a contract with the devil, an agreement taken from a Solomonic magical text. I have two such books before me. One is by Paul Jagot, the Frenchman I mentioned to you, and it contains dreadful things. The other is a Greek book written by someone named Pisanos. Its cover reads: “A scientific study of the traditions, beliefs, and formulas of magicians, alchemists, astrologers, Kabbalists, and others.” But before turning to the Greek book, I would like to glance at the one by Paul Jagot.

I shall read only what I have underlined, so as not to burden you with too much text. The magician pursues extremes. A powerful fascination governs him. During his night vigil, he listens greedily to accounts of the old magician’s achievements, from whom he also receives the tradition. He enters into a pact with the powers of darkness and there carries out his strange magical operations. Little by little, he feels himself withdrawing from his surroundings, because the supernatural opens before him during his visionary states of concentration. And unconsciously he draws toward himself the initiate who will discern his gifts and one day favor him with his secret formulas. In short, he will soon be taught the art of summoning spirits.

It speaks of magical influences extending even to death. Following the instructions of his ritual, the magician concentrates his psychic powers and arouses the power of the agent in which all beings and all living things are said to exist, so as to disturb their vitality to a greater or lesser degree. In this way, it claims, he can make his neighbor’s land barren, keep a field from producing so much as a seedling, destroy animals, and afflict people in various ways. Yes, indeed. That is what the Frenchman says. Now come and see what the Greek author says here. Prodigies and portents—dreadful and terrifying things—so that, upon reading them, one hardly knows how to react.

One does not know whether to laugh or to weep, or what course to take. Of course, it is well known that the demons belong to many different ranks. Somewhere in the Gospel it says that Christ gave His disciples the ability and power “to cast out all demons.” Have we paid attention to that word “all”? What does “all demons” mean? It means that some demons are less wicked and others more wicked. When they tried to...

heal that demon-possessed child—while the Lord was on Mount Tabor with His three disciples and the other nine disciples remained below—what happened? They could not do it. And why could they not? The disciples saw the young man foaming and were frightened. It was as though they said, “This demon is powerful.” Thus, there are many ranks of demons, and the magician here addresses these various ranks: “Emperor Lucifer”—as we explained last time, Lucifer means the Morning Star—“O Emperor Lucifer,” just as we would say, “O God Almighty,” but here it is addressed to the devil, “lord of all rebellious spirits, I ask you to assist me in the invocation I address to your great Lucifuge Rofocale, because I wish to make a contract with him. I also ask you, Beelzebub...”

“to protect me in this undertaking. And Astaroth...” Astaroth is an Assyrian deity, the goddess Astarte, whom you will remember from school: the goddess Astarte, or Astaroth. “Be favorable toward me and cause the great Lucifuge—that is, Lucifer—to appear before me in human form, without any foul odor, and through the contract I shall present to him, to give me all the riches I require.” A brief observation about the words “without any foul odor.” If you read the Philokalia, the classic five-volume work compiled by Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain from the writings of the Neptic Fathers...

you will see in the fifth volume that it says the devil displays various phenomena before the eyes of those who summon him. I will not conceal from you that a secondary-school student once confessed to me what he was seeing. The Philokalia therefore says, “Take heed, Christian, take heed.” The devil appears in many ways: through lights and flashes. This child saw flashes moving from one side of his darkened room to the other—flashes, colors, flames, and odors. Above all, the odor of Satan is the smell of burning sulfur, a very distinctive odor. This child even reached the point...

of telling me that he felt—and we shall examine this when we speak about spiritualism next time, God willing—invisible hands touching and caressing his legs. That is, although he could not see any hands, he could feel hands caressing his legs. You will say that this is terrifying. The Fathers warn us about these things, so do not find it strange. This is why, at first sight, as I told you, one does not know whether to laugh or weep when reading such words as, “Appear before me without any foul odor,” and the other things written here. Yet I repeat: if you read patristic texts, you will see complete agreement and correspondence with what this text says. “O great Lucifuge”—that is, “O great Lucifer”—“I ask you to leave your dwelling, wherever in the world you may be...”

“to appear before me and speak to me. Otherwise...” Here we encounter a strange contradiction: “I shall compel you by the power of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” They now introduce something very strange. “Come quickly, for I compel you.” I must tell you that magic contains an element of coercion, whereas religion contains an element of humble supplication. The magician seeks to bind the higher powers, which means that he sets himself above those higher powers. When the devil prompted our first parents to eat the fruit, this is precisely what he sought: to force God to grant divinity and the knowledge of God to our first parents. But this lies at the very heart of ancestral sin.

“Man, where are you going? Which of the gods are you trying to compel?” Then the devil answers: “Here I am: Lucifuge, Lucifer, the Morning Star, or Beelzebub.” Beelzebub. The common people call him Beelzebul, sometimes saying the name jokingly. He is none other than Baal, the god of the Assyrians.

“Boulino varou. What do you want from me? Why have you disturbed my rest?” Next time I shall read a passage from First Kingdoms in the Old Testament, and there you will hear the devil say to Saul—to King Saul—“What do you want from me? Why have you disturbed my rest?”

So do not take these things as fairy tales; that is why I am telling you this. “I summoned you because I wish to make a contract with you, so that you may make me rich quickly. Otherwise, I shall torment you with the invincible words of the Key of Solomon.” “I cannot do what you ask unless you surrender your soul and body to me after a certain number of years, so that I may do with them whatever I wish.” Remember Mephistopheles and Faust in Goethe’s work. If you read Goethe’s Faust, you will remember this. The book advises that you must have a contract written in your own hand upon parchment and signed with your blood. You are to write the following: “I promise the great Lucifuge Rofocale...”

“that after a certain number of years I shall repay him for all the treasures that will be in my possession.”

The book says that the spirit may still refuse. Then, to compel it to obey you, you are to read the invocation mentioned above, using the dreadful secret words of the Key of Solomon. The spirit will then become agitated and say: “Why do you torment me further? If you give me your soul, I shall give you the nearest treasure, on the condition that you grant me one room every Monday and summon me only once a week, calling me between ten at night and two in the morning. Take back your contract, which I have signed, and from this moment you belong to me.” The devil says, “From this moment you belong to me.” And there is much more besides. Now let us consider something written by a foreign French author in a small book.

Jérôme-Antoine Rony, in a short monograph on magic, writes that magic employs many kinds of material objects, as I was telling you. When it seeks revenge or wishes to harm an object, an animal, or a human being, it is enough to obtain something that has come into contact with that object, animal, or person. My clothes, for example, come into contact with my body. If the magician manages to steal a piece of my clothing, he can then accomplish what he desires. And what is that?

The woman with the flow of blood in the Gospel, whom we heard about the day before yesterday, said, “If only I touch the Lord’s garment, I shall be healed.” And she was healed. In Ephesus, the Christians would go and take the aprons of the Apostle Paul, who worked at a loom—as it is written in the Acts of the Apostles—and lay them upon the sick, and they were healed. It says very specifically that these aprons and handkerchiefs had touched his skin. He had first used them to wipe himself as he worked. You may remember from last year—and we shall say it again this year, God willing, when we speak about icons—that a faithful person becomes a direct, material...

a direct, material bearer of the presence of divine grace. In the same way, my beloved, the devil also uses material channels. That is why, when a sorcerer takes a little piece of cloth, a scrap belonging to the victim, that scrap is not something independent of the victim’s being. Pay attention to what I am about to say: it is an extension of the victim. This word reveals everything—an extension of the victim. Just as the power that went forth from the Lord came from the Lord through His garments, so the sorcerer regards this object in precisely that way. Rony, the Frenchman I mentioned, explains this very well.

He regards it as the victim—an extension of the victim. He takes it and may fashion an image of the victim, a doll. Do you remember that I spoke about dolls last time? So he takes a doll made to resemble the victim as closely as possible, dresses it, tends to it, anoints it with fragrances, caresses it, and places that scrap of cloth upon it. After tending to the doll as carefully as he can, he then gazes at it with satanic malice and tries, psychologically, to direct himself toward the victim. With spite and hatred, he concentrates all his hatred upon the victim through the doll, which, as we have said, is an extension of the victim. He gazes at it for a long time while reciting a ritual formula with invocations.

He heaps curses and blasphemies upon the victim, takes a knife, and begins striking the figure. He strikes it again and again, exhausting himself. At that very moment, the victim is said to feel pain wherever he may be. They did this in the Middle Ages, my beloved, when they wanted to take revenge on someone. They made an effigy, hung it in the public square, set it on fire, and so forth. Here in Greece, as you know, at Pascha they make an effigy of Judas out of straw and burn it. This is the method of treating an image as an extension of the victim. And now this man Pisanos writes in the Greek Solomonic text. I read: “One of the most dreadful devices used by sorcerers to inflict harm was the notorious practice of piercing.”

You know how they stick pins into soap? This is exactly what it means: they are piercing the victim. That incident I mentioned, involving the two women who were burning those two bundles at Saint Stylianos—they contained scraps of cloth, evidently clothing belonging to the victim. This piercing was the sorcerer’s evil influence exerted from a distance. Through it, sorcerers could supposedly remain safe in their lairs while killing a person or destroying his health. Fortunately, however, this piercing did not always succeed, because the two organisms—the one acting and the one suffering—were not attuned and did not have the same nervous system. In any case, the sorcerers proceeded as follows. They fashioned a figure out of wax and...

made its face resemble the face of the person they wished to pierce. They immersed this waxen image in perfumes and gave it the victim’s name. They dressed it in clothes resembling as closely as possible those worn by the person who was to undergo the piercing. On the image they placed a scrap of cloth or some other object belonging to the victim, such as a handkerchief, a chain, some strands of hair, and so forth. Then they concentrated all the power of their will and began uttering the most dreadful curses against the person they wished to harm.

At the same time, using a small knife, they slashed the figure, pierced it, beat it, and cut it to pieces, keeping in mind that the real person stood before them. The victim, it was claimed, would most often be seized by pains and eventually die—the actual victim, that is, the human being. Sorcerers varied this method by adding other means intended to excite the victim’s nervous system to a high degree and thus achieve greater success. By related methods they believed they could produce other kinds of results, especially in matters of erotic desire. Today, “science”—and next time we shall see what sort of science this is—I also have a so-called “scientific” book written by a doctor in Athens. It even contains his reply concerning a letter he sent to the Holy Synod. The Holy Synod, of course, did not deem it worthy of a response. In that book he writes that all these things are science.

We shall see what kind of science it is, for he literally extols both magic and spiritualism. Such a writer exists, and he is a doctor; Pisanos is a doctor. He writes: “Today, the science of applied psychology explains the experiment of piercing through the emission of magnetic fluids.” And then we hear Pisanos’s personal opinion: “If I did not think that some criminal might use these methods to commit a crime or some other evil, I would give the full description, including a discovery of my own concerning the most effective use of the human being’s magnetic fluids.” In other words, he is saying here: “I know a way by which someone can kill a person from a distance, harm him, or make him chronically ill.” But he is afraid that criminals might learn these modern methods and use them to do evil.

“I cannot reveal this secret, because, without wishing to do so, I might place a dreadful and effective weapon in the hands of any criminal. I shall say only that an antidote exists in such cases and that it is possible to cure ‘victims’”—in quotation marks—“who have been afflicted by evil magnetic energies.” Dreadful things, truly, are they not? Dreadful things, but realities, my beloved, since Christianity and the spiritual fathers of old acknowledge these things and therefore issue Canons against them. The word of God also lays down laws against all these dreadful practices. And now, so that we may have some understanding, it would be good...

to examine several forms of magic, so that we may realize that something we ourselves often do in our homes may also be a form of magic.

Every person has acted as a sorcerer at least once in his life—even if only once. When I examine myself, I find that I have done so many times. I shall give you a small example. Suppose you are going to attend to an important matter and, as you climb the stairs of a building, you notice whether your right foot or your left foot lands on the first or the final step. If from this you conclude that the outcome will be favorable or unfavorable, then at that moment you are acting as a sorcerer. If any of you has never once acted as a sorcerer in your life, raise your hand. I doubt there is anyone. No one. If you can be on your way to an important matter...

and hear an owl hooting, or if you are about to begin an important undertaking on a Tuesday and you feel fear—even the slightest fear, even if only a trace, a residue, something hidden in the subconscious—this is a form of magic. It means that somewhere within himself, a person also believes in powers apart from God: dark, uncontrolled, subconscious powers. Every form of magic rests precisely upon such powers. And as we saw last time, these powers are none other than the devil himself, who wants to establish his own religion. The first and principal form of magic is divination.

After all, if someone pauses on the stairs to see whether his left or right foot went up or down first, what is he doing? It is divination. He is trying to foretell what will happen next. Man is impatient. He is in a hurry to know the future. He is curious. And as we said, one element of magic is the desire for an easy way. He tries to obtain and master the secret by the easiest possible path. There are many, very many forms of divination. I shall mention the principal ones. Many times we visit a home, sit down, and talk, and then, while we suspect nothing, we see a woman or a man take our hand and examine it.

What is that person doing? He is looking at my hand. What does he expect to discover from it? This is the familiar practice of palmistry. First, he tries to interpret the shape of the hand itself—the hand’s form, its fingers, and so forth. Then he examines the lines of the palm: whether this part is open or closed, whether there is a vertical line, and so on. There is an entire body of literature on palmistry, my beloved. Before me I have a book on palmistry by Madame de Thèbes, a famous Parisian woman who flourished in France at the beginning of our century. She was well known and wrote this book. Here it is, a book on palmistry, containing many diagrams and pictures showing...

the shape of the hands to be examined: whether the fingers are thin or thick, whether the joints are knotted, whether the fingertips are pointed, what the nails are like, and I do not know what else. First you examine the overall shape of the hands; then you examine the lines. The book contains many photographs. You look at whether this line is shaped one way and another line differently. This line represents Saturn, that one Jupiter, and who knows what else. In other words, as they believe—and we shall consider this shortly—it is an attempt to discover the influence of the stars upon a person and thereby read his future. So, as you have seen, palmistry is one form of divination. Another is card reading. When playing cards were first invented, they were devised as a game.

They were called Tarot cards—Tarot. That is what they were called. But because the figures on the cards became incorporated into magical symbols, the Solomonic book gradually came to be called the Tarot. This book is called the Tarot. I have read from it and shall continue to do so.

Then there are the cards: fortune-tellers use them in an attempt to discover and foretell the future. Next comes divination by coffee grounds. Many materials can be used for divination, but, as we said, we are considering the principal ones. You drink your coffee, and while you suspect nothing, a man or woman beside you turns the cup over and looks inside to see what appears—the shapes formed by the coffee grounds, and so forth. As though coffee, coffee grounds, cards, or the hand could ever reveal the future! Yet such is man’s attempt. And I must tell you that coffee-cup readers make a great deal of money.

You have seen this yourselves.

A man in Athens wanted to consult a coffee-cup reader, so he took along a journalist friend and went to a famous woman who practiced this form of divination. He wanted to explain his concerns and receive her answer. She was clever, like her ancient predecessor, the Pythia at the Oracle of Delphi. She knew how to combine many things, and naturally her chief concern was business. Besides the fifty drachmas she charged for each visit, she also received a portion of coffee. When you went to have your coffee read, you brought the coffee yourself, drank it, and then gave her the cup to examine. You understand, of course, that you would not bring her only a single spoonful of coffee. You would bring fifty drams of it.

How much coffee the old woman collected and then sold—that was another business altogether. After the man drank his coffee, she took the cup and began to examine it. She looked and looked and looked, and then, with all the solemnity of the Pythia, began proclaiming her conclusions. But they did not agree with the facts of her client’s life. She seemed to be telling him things that were both scant and backward; they simply did not fit. The man looked at his journalist friend. “She is not getting it right.” The journalist said, “Something is wrong here, madam. These things do not fit.” She found herself at a loss. What could she do now? Suddenly the journalist had an inspiration—a bit of folk wisdom.

“The coffee has been adulterated.” Well, sir, she was very clever—very clever indeed. “Well, sir,” she says to the customer, “if you bring me adulterated coffee, how do you expect me to tell you the truth?” This shows you that, quite apart from whatever they may claim to say through magic, fraud is also widespread among them. Another form is divination by birds: trying to read the way birds fly and the formations they make. Divination by entrails is literally a scourge among shepherds. Usually, when they slaughter a lamb, they will examine the shoulder blade and try to read from it a person’s fate, the

future, and what will happen in the household. Then there is this matter of “fate.” We say, “May it have a good fate.” Did you know, please, that this expression is magical? We were laying the foundation of a new church in Argyropouli. The bishop was there, and I was standing beside him, when an official said, “There we are—may it have a good fate!” No, sir! A church does not have a “good fate”—God forbid! And this was said precisely while they were throwing coins. First, they threw coins to the craftsman who was setting the foundation stone. And second, they placed coins of every denomination, from ten lepta to twenty drachmas, in a small box beneath the stone, so that if the building should ever collapse in an earthquake and excavations were carried out,

people would know in what period the church had been built. They might also find inscriptions and other historical evidence two hundred, three hundred, or five hundred years from now. There is nothing wrong with that. But to say that through the money we are “laying the foundation”—in quotation marks—and creating the building’s fate is a terrible thing. And what about the rooster slaughtered when we build a house? That is a magical act. It comes from ancient rites for founding a building, intended to appease dark and uncontrollable powers. That is what these ideas about fate are. Then there are dreams. We try to draw conclusions from our dreams. A dream is certainly a mysterious phenomenon. Science and psychology have still not given us the final word on what a dream is. Nevertheless...

Dream interpreters and others who concern themselves with dreams devote special attention to them and try to draw conclusions from them. Perhaps you will say: What about Joseph in Egypt, who interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, or Daniel, who interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams—two dreams, rather—or Joseph, the betrothed of the Theotokos, who saw an angel in his sleep telling him to flee at once, and so forth? My dear friends, on rare occasions God may speak through dreams. But just as God may use a particular means to communicate with people, the devil also uses that same means to communicate with them.

He exploits the method; he exploits the means. Because the danger is so great, Holy Scripture—the Old Testament—warns us: “Do not believe in dreams, for dreams have led many astray.” I would tell you that anyone who is preoccupied with dreams needs only two or three days to break the habit. On waking in the morning, let him try not to remember anything, and he will soon see that he no longer remembers what he dreamed. Everything will be forgotten. But if he dwells on his dreams, he will be troubled before anything has even happened. Then there are chance encounters. We see a priest on the road, or a black cat, or this or that, and think some evil will befall us. In my father’s village, there was a hunter who, whenever he saw a priest on the road

in the morning, would turn back without fail and not go hunting. He was certain he would catch nothing—or rather, that was what he believed. All these things are situations and persons exploited by the devil. The second form is incantation: the summoning of demons through chants and songs. Fakirs, for example, sing songs in an attempt to bewitch snakes by magic. The viper holds its head upright and becomes, as it were, dazed and hypnotized, following the movement and rhythm of the magician’s song—the fakir’s song. In our own society, however, incantation

takes the following form. It is chiefly the “binding” of a married couple by means of certain prayers—which are really curses—uttered during the wedding. Sadly, this is very widespread. Some wicked person with a blackened soul—and I shall speak as Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain does, who rebukes such people severely, calling them devils, scoundrels, and many other choice names—stands behind the couple and performs magical acts while the wedding is taking place, thereby offending this most sacred Mystery. Why does he do this? These things are common, my dear friends, especially in the villages. A man wanted one woman, but she married someone else.

Or a woman wanted one man, but he married someone else. “Just wait and see what I’ll do to him,” say those who have lost the one they wanted. They resort to a male or female sorcerer, who slips in behind the couple unnoticed and “binds” them. A man who was also a priest told me about one of his former classmates at an ecclesiastical school. He was a good student—the best in the school. He graduated, received his diploma, and found a good young woman. He did not marry another woman whom people had suggested to him—and was that not his right? He married the woman he wanted. Then the time came for the wedding, so that afterward he could become a priest. Someone went and stood behind them and, indeed,

used magic to bind the couple. The result was that, as soon as the wedding had ended and they had gone home—in the villages, as you know, there is a celebration with violins, dancing, singing, a meal, and so forth—he told those around him that he was cold. “I don’t know,” he said, “I have terrible chills. I can’t go on; I’m not well.” Of course, it is not strange for someone to fall ill, especially after intense emotion. In any case, they cared for him as best they could. A little later he said to his wife, “Who are you? Who are you over there? Who is this woman? Go away! You are not my wife. Go away! You are not my wife.” The result was that this man died within a few days.

What can I tell you? These things are truly terrifying.

Then there is enchantment—the spell or charm. Let us examine the word itself. In Greek, goēs or goētas means a sorcerer: one who enchants, a magician. What does the Apostle Paul say somewhere? “Evil men and sorcerers will grow worse and worse.” Sorcerers—that is, magicians.

Are the so-called “enchanters” of the cinema any less magical, or the “magicians” and “enchanters” of the pen, who through their books and literature—or through their beauty or acting—bewitch the masses, the people, and lead them collectively into Hades? This too is a kind of magic, though the word is being used in an extended sense. Enchantment, then, means magic; and spells and charms are those familiar incantations that women perform and recite, mixing in an “Our Father,” as we say, and words from God. But listen carefully, my dear friends: here there is a great snare. We shall examine it next time, when we read the passage from the New Testament about the divining woman at Philippi, who confessed God.

In order to deceive us, the devil puts divine names into the mouths of such people. It is the same with the Solomonic books. “I shall torment you,” it says, “in the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” It immediately throws in something from religion. Thus, the person who casts or removes the evil eye uses strange objects, gestures, and words. Often people in Philippi are ashamed to tell me what those words are, because they are obscene. Many times they are indeed obscene. They mingle together the name of God, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Saints, and so on. Sometimes, as they say, the words are entirely “divine.” And when you tell them, “Do not ever do this again,” they reply, “But Father, it is a very simple thing.

I say divine words. I am doing good, not evil.” And yet, my dear friends, when you put water in a dish, drip a few drops of oil into it, and try to see what will happen in order to cure someone afflicted by the evil eye... Now, the evil eye is something recognized and acknowledged by the faith, yes. It is known to exist. The Apostle says: “You were walking in God’s way, in the truth, and someone cast the evil eye upon you.” The evil eye is the influence of the envious devil working through the eyes of an envious person. When someone looks at something with envy and says, “How beautiful that is,” or, “What a beautiful flower,” or, “What a beautiful cat”...

the flower may wither—the flower may wither, my dear friends. There is no special penetrating power in the person’s gaze. He admires, but his admiration is envious. And there, whether he realizes it or not—I do not know—he becomes a dark instrument of the envious devil, who brings evil into God’s creation. So if we put a few drops of oil into water to remove the evil eye, do you know what you are doing, my dear friends? Hear this clearly: you are making a parody of Holy Unction. Holy Unction is a Mystery of the Church, and its purpose is to heal the sick. “Let him call for the priests of the Church,” says James, the brother of the Lord,

“and let the priests of the Church pray over him, anointing the sick man with oil, and he shall be healed. And the prayer,” he says, “will save the one who is weary and ill, and he will be made well.” If God judges that the sick person should not recover, there are two possible explanations. Either he lacked faith, or God judges that he should not recover, because God knows what is best. Paul, as you see, was not healed; he himself suffered and implored God to make him well. But God said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Do not protest; what I have given you is enough. My strength will be revealed through your weakness. So you will keep this thorn in your flesh, and you will suffer. I shall not heal you. God knows.

God makes the judgment. If, then, I am not healed through Holy Unction, does that mean the Mystery has no power? No. Either I lacked faith, or God judged otherwise. But when, through your magic, you make a show of divine things—putting water and oil together—you are making a parody. Do you understand what “parody” means? A mockery: a parody of the Mystery of Holy Unction. It is terrifying, as we shall see. Do you not understand that the devil has his own forms of communion, his own mysteries, and his own worship? Here he attempts to imitate the Mysteries of the Church through parodies. Further on, we shall encounter another such parody. This form is also called incantation. Fourth comes the making of amulets.

Amulets—amulets made from silk threads, bear hair, mysterious objects, snake bones, washed bones of the dead, and so on and so forth. My dear friends, a gravedigger from the First Cemetery of Larissa told me that a woman once came to him intending to perform magic. She said, “Please, I want you to wash some bones under the tap while I hold a bottle underneath to collect the water.” And, of course, she was supposedly doing something for the soul of the departed as well. He realized that she intended to use it for some evil purpose. “No,” he told her, “that will not happen.” She persisted: “I will pay you.” “No,” he said, “I do not want your money...”

She went so far as to tell him, “I will give myself to you, if only you will do what I ask.” Do you understand? Do you understand? These things truly happen.

Fifth is sorcery through potions. In Greek, pharmakeia means the use of drugs or potions to poison others. Here the magician uses medicines, herbs, and various other substances, which he gives people to drink and thereby poisons them. As a rule, the purpose is evil. As for pharmakeia, remember what we said last year about the book of the Apocalypse: “Outside are the sorcerers.” It does not mean “Outside are the pharmacists,” as we might like to think. The pharmakoi are sorcerers—those who engage in pharmakeia. I would like to tell you just one or two incidents involving this kind of sorcery.

The aim, of course, is either to kill the other person, to make him ill, or to change his mind. In this case they use love potions—philtra, from the Greek word meaning “to love.” They give him something to drink so that the feelings of his heart will change. These magical preparations are called love potions. He loves one girl, but she does not love him; she loves someone else.

What did one mother do? Just think how many things I hear—how many things people tell me every day. I could perhaps spend an entire week recounting them. What I am telling you comes from real life. A mother—would you ever believe that a mother could cast a spell on her own child, on her own young son? And yet she did. Yes, indeed. She took some eggs, carried them to the cemetery, and buried them deep in a grave.

They remained in the grave for several days—as many as the particular form of magic required. Then she dug them up and gave them to her son to eat.

Another young man had an illness and told me that he went to a village—I will not say which one, though it is within our Metropolis—and a priest’s wife gave him a potion. A priest’s wife, mind you! What did she say? “I will give you this medicine, and your illness will pass.” And what was this medicine? There it is, you see: the Ascension, the Theotokos, the Second Coming, the Annunciation—and when the bones were exhumed...

She kept it in a bottle, and whenever anyone had such an illness, she gave him a teaspoonful of wine from it to drink. So I ask you: is this, or is it not, a parody of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist? There—you now see another parody of another Mystery.

Sixth—where are we now?—is astrology. Astrology is extremely widespread, in the familiar form of horoscopes and the like. To increase their circulation, newspapers make sure to publish our horoscope every day. And there are naïve people who go searching there for their own sign. Magazines do the same. You should understand that this is magic: astrological signs are used in an attempt to discover a person’s future, as we see here.

Aries: the influence of the nature of Mars indicates impulse, effort, initiative, and energy. Taurus: the nature of Venus indicates principles, slow, firm, and orderly developments, and realism. Gemini: the nature of Mercury indicates persuasiveness, wavering judgments, an analytical manner, and so on and so forth. Astrology is exceedingly ancient. All these things are both very old and still with us today. My dear ones, please do not concern yourselves with the astrological horoscopes in newspapers or go there seeking your fortune and trying to learn what the next twenty-four hours will bring. No, please! It is a very grave sin. Later you will see what the Canons say about this matter.

Seventh are the visionaries. Pay close attention. In our time, prophets, false teachers, and false prophets have sprung up like mushrooms, claiming that they see the Most Holy Theotokos, that they see Christ, and that they bring special messages to people. In Athens, after literally causing great distress throughout the region, a certain Athanasia Kriketou became prominent. She had a poster printed. It showed the inside of her house filled with icons, like a church, and beneath it were the words, “Saint Athanasia.” She claimed that God had inscribed letters upon her chest.

Announcements and messages, she said. Of course, her chest was examined under a microscope, and it was found that the marks had been made with a blunt instrument. Her skin was sensitive and reddened easily, leaving a line wherever the instrument passed. An afternoon newspaper truly exposed the matter, since the examination was microscopic. And there is a second point. Father Basil puts it well here: “How is it,” he asks, “that these messages written on her chest contained spelling mistakes?” He said, of course, that the Most Holy Theotokos would not present such things. “At the very least,” he said, “the Most Holy Theotokos would know how to spell.”

That shows good sense, does it not? Good sense. This is his criticism, not mine. Then there was another woman, perhaps in Magoula, and these people literally tormented the region of Patras with something truly satanic. Finally, Pharsala became famous through the presence of a certain Kostas, who traveled throughout the villages of Larissa and the city itself. To show you what sort of man he was, I will mention a sorrowful incident. I do not know whether a relative of the person concerned is here listening to me. It was Saturday evening, at about nine o’clock. Someone came to my home and said to me, “I have...”

“...a nephew, and the poor man is suffering terribly from his illness.” He went to this Kostas, the magician, who told him, “Throw away your medicines. You become the doctor, and I will make you well.” And the poor, naïve man threw his medicines away.

His condition grew worse, and every night he lay upon his bed like a dead man, so to speak. The next morning, at Saint Athanasios, I spoke very sternly about this matter. By Wednesday, three days later, I received the news. “Do you remember that young man I told you about?” I was asked. “He has died.” Yet this man Kostas had promised to cure him, and instead the young man died before his time. Please be careful: these people are frauds. I was also told that they had a basin in which he washed his feet. They would bring some kind of perfumed oil, or some other special substance—I do not know exactly what—and wash his feet, collecting the water afterward.

Women would then go there to obtain it as though it were the blessing of water—and I will not tell you the other things that are not fitting to mention in this place. Well, when his wife cried out, he disappeared. Another man who is making a fortune from this is up near Serres. His name is Christos. Forgive me for a moment; let me explain.

He lives in a village of Serres called Gazoros—Gazoros. He performs supposed signs and wonders. The Society for Psychical Research in Athens declared him to be a remarkable and rare medium—a medium. Next time we shall speak first about these mediums. He claims to be able to see many things from a great distance. He is a visionary. His house is filled with icons. But let me give you one example. An acquaintance of mine—I do not know whether he is listening—told me that when he went there concerning a case of healing, the man said to him as soon as he entered, “Take out what is hidden around your neck.”

Can you see anything hanging around my neck? I am wearing my clothes, my jacket, and my tie. How could that man know—or even dare to guess—what might be hanging around another person’s neck? Yet something was hanging there: a cross. He could see the cross, and the Cross troubled him. “But,” you may say, “he had icons in his room.” I will tell you plainly: the icons were there as a trap, while the Cross was an obstacle—an obstacle to him. Strange indeed. Where does the devil lead such a man? His name is Christos. They call him Christos of Gazoros, the “Gazorene,” playing upon the name “Nazarene.” Gazorene, Nazarene. The Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Annunciation...

...all used in the service of Satan. This man is a throne of the devil, a throne of Satan. I beg you: do not go to him, and prevent others from going. If you have gone, confess it in Holy Confession. These are dreadful things. There was another such man at Pournari near Thebes. Fortunately, he died, and the place found peace. There was hardly a woman who had not gone to see him at Pournari. He was one of the seemingly peaceful demons. He would usually say, “Go, my child, say prayers, make offerings, and do such things.” Then the woman would go to the priest and say, “Father, Kostas told me a few days ago...”

“...I want you to serve a Paraklesis for me, but I want it done in this particular way.” It takes no great wisdom to understand that both she and we are being made his clients: this comes from a magician, on a magician’s advice. Here in Larissa, near Saint Constantine, we also had a certain Maria, another visionary. A friend of mine went to investigate who this famous Maria was and what she said and did. She would lie down on a bed and fall asleep. The others gathered around her, reciting prayers and standing over her. After half an hour or an hour, more or less, she would begin uttering inarticulate sounds, and from these they would try to draw conclusions. On this occasion, when my friend went there, she claimed to be seeing various people. Then he heard her speaking these strange words.

“They are possessed by demons,” he said. When they heard him, they began hurling the vilest insults at him. It was perfectly obvious that they were demon-possessed. Please, do not go to this woman. Do not listen to her or pay any attention to her. And tell those who are not here and who go to her that they must stop. She too is a throne of the devil.

Next is fire worship. Fire has always been worshipped. Here I shall say something that some may find strange and perhaps astonishing. I would simply like to read it from this little book, Magic, by Jérôme-Antoine Rony, himself an initiate. Fire is an extremely important element in human life. It plays a very important role, and so it is only natural that it should also become an element of magic. I was once told of a priest in a village—sadly, it was a priest—who practiced black magic, and I mean that literally. It was a village some distance from Athens, toward Boeotia.

When the villagers happened to be out late at night, perhaps returning from some entertainment or other, and passed the priest’s house, they would see him sitting cross-legged in his courtyard before a burning fire, staring into it. They would speak to him, but he would not answer. What was he doing? He was performing a magical rite. Fire, then, is an element used in magic. Do not be surprised, first of all, when I say that fire—the bonfire and the bonfire ceremony practiced by the Scouts—is a remnant of magic. I know that some will object, understandably, but this must be explained. I will say it again: the evening bonfire ceremony performed by the Scouts is a remnant of magic.

You may ask, “Do the Scout leader and the Scouts know this?” Certainly not. They neither know it nor understand it nor realize it. Yet when we analyze what is taking place, it is a magical rite. It is a terrible thing for tradition to tell us to do something whose deeper meaning lies outside proper Christian practice.

I also wanted to say something about firewalking. We shall see it later in the Law of God, in the Old Testament: passing over the fire. “You shall not make your child pass through the fire,” it says. When I was young, I too used to jump over the fire. We had this custom in May, when the fires were lit, and we would jump over them. Then, as I recall, they gathered the ashes, put them in the fireplace, and did I do not know what else with them. Fire, they say, represents power. Rony writes here that the fire ceremony represents power, while the ashes are the seed of primordial vegetation, fruitfulness, and fertility. A magical practice! I have seen people in Larissa burn various things and jump over the fires, though no one realizes that this is magical. It is magic!

Then there is the familiar firewalking of the Anastenaria, practiced in Langadas and elsewhere in Thrace. These people walk over burning coals, as you read in the newspapers every year, while holding icons of Saints Constantine and Helen. Their feet are not burned, although they dance for a long time in a pit filled with glowing coals. The phenomenon is plainly spiritualistic and magical. If you consult the encyclopedia—please read the Great Pyrsos Encyclopedia—you will see how much it says about the Anastenaria and those who practice them, called the Anastenarides. They undergo a period of preparation, sacrifice a bull behind the sanctuary on the twentieth of May, remain for many days in special lodgings away from their homes, and run through the forest

in a frenzied manner. They enter what I can only call a state of frenzy, for the Pythia, as you know, also entered such a state by inhaling smoke and its fumes—a kind of altered spiritual condition. When we discuss spiritualism, we shall see what this means.

Tenth.

The tenth form is necromancy. Necromancy is spiritualism, and spiritualism is an entire subject in itself. My dear friends, prominent figures have occupied themselves with spiritualism, so it will concern us at our next meeting. Next time, we shall devote considerable time specifically to spiritualism. But I want to conclude with something else first. Please pay particular attention here, because you may never have suspected this. Suppose you call a priest to read the prayers of Holy Unction, the blessing of water, or the Paraklesis, in order to accomplish something. What do you hope to accomplish? For example, you want God to reveal to you who stole something from you.

Here I am not speaking primarily about the content of the prayers. Do you realize that this can be a form of magic? Do you suspect it? There are people who pray for success and a favorable outcome in some immoral affair. They go out and say a prayer; they light a candle. Yes, they enter the Church and light a candle so that an immoral undertaking of theirs—a meeting, a scheme, or whatever else—may prosper and go well. Do you realize that this is a form of magic? To substantiate this, I shall quickly relate two incidents from the Old Testament connected with our subject.

We find ourselves sometime in the tenth century before Christ.

Thank you.

Eli is the high priest. I should tell you that this is written in First Kingdoms in the Old Testament. He had two sons.

They were impious sons. As young men, they seized portions of the sacrifices before they had even been offered and took the finest meat for themselves. Their father was an excellent man, but he was far too lenient and did not rebuke his children. When someone told them, “First offer the sacrifice and burn the fat as prescribed,” the son would insolently take the finest meat before it had been offered for God’s sacred use. By their behavior they provoked God to anger. These two sons had become a scandal to the people. They had married, had families, and so forth. Because of their sins, together with the sins of the people, God permitted

the Philistines to attack the Hebrews. A battle took place, and the Hebrews were defeated on the battlefield. With thousands wounded, they withdrew to their camp. Then Eli’s sons went and took the Ark of the Covenant, although their father did not agree that it should be taken. The two sons and the commanders of the army brought the Ark of the Covenant to the front, believing that the Ark’s presence would enable them to defeat the Philistines. They did not truly believe in the power of God, but merely in the physical presence of the Ark. Do you see the difference?

They did not trust in the power of God, for they were not righteous men. They trusted only in the Ark’s presence, imagining that the Ark itself—the wood from which it was made and the stone tablets it contained—would produce the desired result almost magically. As soon as the Ark reached the front, the soldiers cried aloud, “The Ark has come! We shall defeat them!” The Philistines heard them and passed through three stages of fear. First they said, “What is happening?” Then, “Woe to us! God is with them; the Ark has come!” At the third stage they said, “Be men and take courage! Summon all your strength and fight the Hebrews.” They fought them, and thirty thousand Hebrews fell dead on the battlefield.

The Ark was carried away as plunder into the hands of the Philistines. What later happened to the Ark, and how terribly the Philistines suffered because of it, is another matter. Read the relevant chapters of First Kingdoms. But what did the Hebrews do here? They used the Ark as a magical means. In the seventh century, King Hezekiah found inside the sanctuary the bronze serpent, preserved from the years in the wilderness. You know the account: when the Hebrews looked upon the bronze serpent, they were not killed by the serpents that had entered the camp. But take care to understand that behind the bronze serpent, which was a symbol and a foreshadowing, stood

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who would become man and be hung upon the Cross. Whoever looked to Him would be delivered from the deadly serpent of sin. This is why, in the third chapter of the Gospel according to John, the Lord says: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” In other words, “The Son of Man— I, Jesus—must be lifted up just as the serpent was lifted up by Moses.” What, then, was the serpent? It was a symbol. But what were our friends the Hebrews doing in the seventh century? They were burning incense to the bronze serpent and performing magical acts in order to obtain what they wanted. Magical acts! They had turned the symbol—even though it had once truly served as an instrument of healing—into an object of magic. And Hezekiah acted entirely rightly when he learned of this.

He smashed the serpent, which had been kept as a memorial, into pieces and threw it away, so that the Hebrews would no longer practice magic with it. You see, then, that whenever we use prayer, the blessing of water, the Divine Liturgy, or anything else for a purpose that is not good, this is precisely magic. That is all, Mr. Chairman. What does Holy Scripture say about all these terrible things? Deuteronomy, chapter 18, verses 10 through 12: “There shall not be found among you”—among you, O people of Israel, and among you, O Christian people—anyone “who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire,” purifying his son or daughter by fire.

Nor anyone “who practices divination,” or “interprets omens”—the familiar custom of Klidonas—or “observes signs in birds.” Birds fly past: white birds are taken as a good omen, black birds as a bad one. Nor a “sorcerer”; we have explained what sorcery is. Nor one “who casts spells,” which I have not yet explained. Nor a “ventriloquist,” one who supposedly speaks from within himself, from the belly; such people exist. Nor an “observer of wonders,” one who interprets strange heavenly signs. I remember, for example, that on August 14, 1940, the Northern Lights descended as far as

our latitudes and even reached Crete. There was a rosy light. It was not supernatural; it was caused by the ionization of the atmosphere. Yet the weather prophets began making predictions about the Pindus, and I remember that this was on the eve of the war. They kept saying, “There will be a war, because this light has appeared.” Such people are called observers of wonders—those who interpret extraordinary signs and phenomena. Scripture also speaks of one “who inquires of the dead.” It says that no one among you must consult the dead—that is, go to spiritualist séances, table-turning sessions, or mediums, all of which we shall discuss next time. “For everyone who does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.” All these things are an abomination before the eyes of the Lord God—an abomination.

What do the Canons say about the prescribed penance? Canon 24 of the Synod of Ancyra speaks of those who practice divination, follow pagan customs, or bring people into their homes to discover sorceries—asking someone to find the magic done against them, to undo it, or to bind someone by magic. The Canon places them under a five-year penance without Holy Communion. Canon 61 of the Quinisext Council imposes six years without receiving Holy Communion. A few concluding words about magic, then, so that we may bring this subject to a close. Forgive me; I did not want to leave such a serious subject unfinished. We shall turn to spiritualism next time, since the hour is already late. Magic is the art of the devil.

Anyone who realizes that he has fallen into the snares of this dreadful, demonic art must not despair. Whatever he may have done, let him make a full Holy Confession, be set free, and become once again a child of God.

Και είχε ο άνθρωπος αυτός εις το επιτελείον του τέσσερις μάγους συμβούλους. Πρώτα ρωτούσε αυτούς και μετά ρωτούσε τους στρατηγούς του. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι πολλές φορές τις μάχες τις άρχιζε ή τις σχεδίαζε ημέρα Κυριακή, διότι έτσι τον συνεβούλευαν οι μάγοι του. Και επειδή οι μάγοι φυσικά έχουν διάβολον, το αφεντικό τους είναι ο διάβολος, γι' αυτό και ο Χίτλερ πήγε κατά διαβόλου. Και ο Στάλιν το ίδιο, στο επιτελείο του είχε τρεις μάγους, ολκής της Μαύρης Μαγείας. Θέλετε κάτι πιο παρόν στα μάτια μας;

Ιερώνυμος Αντουάν Ρονί, σε ένα βιβλιαράκι, μια μονογραφία περί μαγείας, γράφει ότι η μαγεία χρησιμοποιεί πολλά υλικά, όπως σας έλεγα, και όταν θέλει να εκδικηθεί ή να κάνει κακό είτε σε αντικείμενα, είτε σε ζώα, είτε στον άνθρωπο, αρκεί να επιτύχει να αποκτήσει ένα μέρος που ήρθε σε επαφή με το ζώο ή το αντικείμενο ή τον άνθρωπο. Έτσι, παραδείγματος χάριν, τα ρούχα μου, τα ρούχα μου έρχονται σε επαφή με το σώμα μου. Αν καταφέρει ο μάγος να μου κλέψει ένα κομμάτι ρούχο, τότε πετυχαίνει εκείνο που θέλει. Και τι;
