Summary
The lecture presents spiritualism as a rival religion that seeks to replace the doctrines of established faiths with a universal spiritualist system. The lecture contrasts the Orthodox doctrine of the Holy Trinity with spiritualism’s pantheistic identification of God, spirit, matter, and the universe. Spiritualist séances are described as imitating Orthodox worship through prayers, hymns, incense, feast-day rules, and liturgical texts while directing participants toward demonic deception.

We should speak about this subject as fully as possible. If, once again, we look at the daily press, as we did last time, we find a report from that congress I mentioned to you, held in England in 1960 and attended by two thousand spiritualists from twenty-nine countries. Among the many things written here, I will read a short excerpt. These words were spoken by the Swiss president of the congress, Karl Müller of Zurich: “In the past,” he said, “religious people thought of life after death as something entirely separate from modern science.”
“The whole question has now changed. At that time, matter was matter and spirit was spirit. Today, modern physicists have transformed everything into energy. Of course, people have been brought up with religious beliefs from early childhood, and the elderly do not change. We must wait for them to die. But spiritualism, by spreading knowledge of the spiritual world, will one day destroy the competing doctrines of the world’s various religions and unite them all into one.”
So here spiritualism openly proclaims that it will destroy all the doctrines of the religions and replace them with a single system: spiritualism itself will take their place. As you can see from the little I have read to you, spiritualism is not merely a display of phenomena; it is also a teaching. Indeed, it presents itself as a complete teaching, as far as possible. It comes to offer us a systematic account of every subject: the world, God, and man. Spiritualism claims nothing less.
It is a religion. I shall demonstrate this as we continue with our subject. Indeed, when it claims that it will destroy all the religions of the world and that spiritualism will take their place, you understand how truly religious it is at its core. To understand this, however, we must analyze spiritualism and examine it more closely. Today I will not speak for myself. I will let a spiritualist speak. Of course, I have not brought him here with me, nor do I have him in my bag, but I do have one of his books. It was written by a physician named Vasileios Tsinoukas,
a medical inspector for the Social Insurance Institute, formerly director of the Asvestochori Sanatorium and formerly a department head for Social Hygiene in the Ministry of Health. Here is the book. Its title is Scientific, Religious, and Materialistic Spiritualism and the Christian Churches. Beneath that it says: “A Reply to Professor Trembelas’s Book Spiritualism.” In this book he does indeed give a clear—quite clear—answer to the question of what spiritualism is, so that we too may properly learn what this religion of spiritualism is.
This physician, who is of course a spiritualist, makes a distinction here. He speaks with considerable passion, attacking the Holy Synod, Trembelas, and the Metropolitan of Florina, Kantiotis, who had also defended the faith. He speaks very passionately. Nevertheless, as I told you, he gives us a clear picture of the content of spiritualism. He says that spiritualism consists of three elements: materialistic spiritualism, scientific spiritualism, and religious spiritualism. What is materialistic spiritualism? He tells us that it is communication with lower, wicked spirits.
These are not the souls of good people, nor are they higher spirits. They are simply the souls of sinful, thoroughly wicked people and evil spirits, which converse with human beings through mediums, while those people seek purely material benefits. For example, we may want a medium to tell us how our business affairs will go, whether a sick person will live or die, whether things will turn out well or badly, where to find a lost treasure, and many other things. He says that this is materialistic spiritualism and that “we spiritualists regard this materialistic spiritualism as charlatanry and want nothing to do with it.” You understand, however.
This so-called materialistic spiritualism is precisely the kind most widespread among the general public: astrology, fortune-tellers who read coffee grounds, this thing or that, and every sort of divination. All these make up the spiritualism of the masses. Tsinoukas repudiates it, but not because he does not believe in it. This is a device intended to mislead the Holy Synod, to which he addresses himself, so that he may say, “We have nothing to do with that. Those things are frauds.” Yet in doing so, he merely exposes his own position. He effectively admits that there is charlatanry, deception, fraud, and communication with evil spirits through the various forms of so-called materialistic spiritualism.
Then there is scientific spiritualism, which he truly defends. What is scientific spiritualism? It is the attempt to place spiritualistic phenomena on an experimental footing. For example, there may be a communication of thought: telepathy. My thought passes into another person’s receptive brain, and I transmit my thought to him. Or there may be some other phenomenon, whatever it may be: a dematerialization or a materialization. The medium’s own bodily members are separated into pieces without bloodshed—without any blood being spilled, without bleeding at all. A leg is over there, an arm over here, and then they are joined together again.
Once they have been joined together again, some explanation is needed. How did the separation take place, and how were the members reunited? Scientific spiritualism attempts to give a scientific account of this—that is, to prove what caused it. Or, for example, it seeks to explain how a soul leaves a dead person and supposedly enters another body, and all such things, including the question of the soul itself. We shall speak about that shortly. Then there is religious spiritualism. Religious spiritualism, he says, has no other purpose than to console grieving people, especially those who have lost loved ones. When, for example, a member of a family has died, the relatives can...
communicate with that spirit, speak with it, and receive consolation. But let us examine these matters more carefully. Within these three categories—materialistic, scientific, and religious spiritualism—what is the actual teaching? First of all, what does it teach about God? At first glance, of course, they tell us that God exists in three hypostases, three persons. Tsinoukas attacks Trembelas and says, “We are religious people. Why does this professor tell us that we stand outside the garden of Christianity?”
If we read this book, we shall be horrified by the teaching of spiritualism. God in three hypostases, they say. But what do they mean when they say that God is in three hypostases? We say: the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet there is one God—three persons, one essence, one God. They say instead: God is the first person, Spirit the second person, and Matter the third person. God, Spirit, Matter. But what is this? Is not God spirit? Quite simply, according to the spiritualists, God is identified with the world. Everything within the world is God, and God is one with the world.
This is nothing less than a pantheistic conception. If the sun is within the world, then the sun is God, because it is a part of the deity. But these are plainly pantheistic or idolatrous fabrications, completely foreign to the spirit of Holy Scripture. Listen to what he writes. Because there is so much here, I copied it out so that I would not have to keep opening the book; I shall merely refer to the page. On page 29 he says: “Everything that exists in the universe or in nature is a particle of the deity.” Everything within the world is a piece, a part, of God. A tree is a piece of God, a fish is a piece of God, and the sun is a piece of God.
“It came from the essence of God Himself and will ultimately return to its Creator.” In other words, everything has come forth, departed, and emanated from God, and everything will return to God again. Then he continues with what he says was once described in one way and is described differently today. Listen now to these tales, which recall the ancient Gnostics of the second and third centuries.
Therefore, all these things come from a primordial matter, and this primordial matter, if you please, is none other than God Himself. Primordial matter! And so God is matter existing on the seventh plane, and this matter is threefold. They say that it consists of positive and negative forms of electricity called “ultimata.” I do not know what these ultimata are, but from them everything in creation is produced, both visible and invisible. These ultimata came from the essence of God, and everything will finally return to Him. Then he even inserts a phrase from Holy Scripture: “that God may be all in all.” He borrows from Holy Scripture as well. So what sort of invention are we constructing here?
God is within the universe; the universe is God. Everything we see is God. This is a pantheistic conception: everything we see is God. Therefore, if God is matter, can we speak of pure spirit? Certainly not. In reality, my beloved, as will become even clearer from the other subjects we shall examine, spiritualism—despite placing the word “spirit” at the very front of its name—is one hundred percent materialism, through and through. And what do they say about Jesus Christ, my beloved? Of course, they say that they believe in Jesus Christ. They believe in Him very much. But what do they understand Him to be? What do they mean by Jesus Christ?
Do they accept, of course, that He is the second person of the Holy Trinity? No. They simply say that He is a higher spirit who came to our earth and became a man—a higher spirit, nothing more. On page 9 it says: “At various intervals, Divine Providence sends to earth preeminent spirits, who become incarnate as human beings and, through their teachings, their example, and the lives they lead on earth, are to bring sinful people back to the path of virtue. Therefore, our Lord Jesus Christ is also one of these preeminent spirits who have appeared on earth.” In other words, they tell us that Christ is merely a higher spirit.
A man who came to tell us a few good things and then departed again, much like a number of other men who appeared in different places. In their view, the Buddha is more or less the same, Muhammad is the same, and so on. And to see what they ultimately say about the Trinitarian God, listen again to page 9. They speak of a “universal electrical center”—an electrical center, meaning electrons, like those that pass through a lamp and make its filament glow, producing light. This, they say, exists somewhere high in the universe. What materialists, initiates, and spiritualists describe in this way, they call “God in three hypostases, the All, and Spirit.” Who, then, is this God in three hypostases? An electron, an electrical center—in other words, materialism, pure and simple.
But when we hold such conceptions of God, what more can be said? Nevertheless, let us continue. What do they believe about the soul? He says that the soul is not spirit. It is not spirit. The soul is energy, and specifically energy governed by Einstein’s formula, as he writes twice in this book. Listen to how he puts it: “And since it is proved...” Proved! How easily they use such words! I am sorry that this man is a doctor who attended a university and therefore can supposedly be expected to know what proof means. Proof means that there can no longer be any objection to the claim being made and that it has been established as true.
But when an objection remains, there is no proof; what we have is only a theory. So when he speaks about the soul—a subject about which no one to this day has proved anything, nothing whatsoever—how can he say that it has been proved? This shows how unscientific he is, even though he is a man of science. And what does he say? “It is proved that the soul is energy that can be photographed”—we can photograph it—“that can be weighed”—we can weigh it—“and that is vibrational and pulsating in nature,” as all waves pulsate, “with a frequency of vibration greater than that of cosmic rays.”
Let me explain further. A radio wave, for example, is an oscillating motion. But the soul, he says, is something with a frequency far higher than even the ultra-high frequencies—an exceedingly high frequency, higher than the cosmic radiation that comes to us from the sun. “It must be investigated in laboratories of electrobiology, for it is an energetic entity mathematically subject to Einstein’s formula: energy equals mass multiplied by the square of the speed of light.” In other words, the soul is E = mc²: mass multiplied by the square of the speed of light. This is Einstein’s well-known formula. Forgive me; I do not want to confuse you with too many details. I wish to say only this: that famous formula opened the way for us to convert matter into energy.
And energy into matter. Atomic energy is well known. What is atomic energy? What is its release—or its conversion, if you prefer? What are matter and energy? So he claims that the soul follows the same path: it is energy. The body is matter and the soul is energy, just like a live electrical wire. The copper is matter, and electrical energy passes through it. Yet, as our century has taught us very clearly on the basis of Einstein’s famous relation, energy can become matter again. My good sir, it is simple: since matter becomes energy, energy becomes matter. Therefore, the soul can become matter. That is precisely why, they say, it can be weighed and photographed. Is this materialism or is it not? It is one hundred percent materialism.
On the one hand, he says, “I shall strike down materialism.” My God, what contradictions! On the other hand, spiritualism tells us with perfect clarity that the soul is energy and can be brought under Einstein’s law—Einstein’s relation. It even says that the soul has been weighed. Listen to the wording: “The American physicians Dugan and MacDougall, together with five colleagues, were the first to study the weight of the souls of six dying persons.” We shall read it, and then you will see more clearly. How do they measure the soul? How do they weigh it? They bring in a sick person who is near death, place him on a bed, and set the entire bed upon a highly sensitive scale. Then they begin measuring.
As we were saying, they measure the gross weight, because the soul is still inside the person. Of course, anyone familiar with scales would laugh; he could not help laughing. So they measure the gross weight and wait for the person to expire. The moment he dies, they subtract the tare, and what remains is the weight of the soul. My dear friends, this is on page 32. These are the very claims I have been telling you about. It is appalling. I have underlined them heavily here. There it is: the weight of the soul. Let me find the passage and read it directly: “They studied the weight of the souls of six dying persons, who were placed on a specially constructed bed fitted to an automatic balance, and concluded that its average weight is sixty grams.”
The soul, my dear friends, weighs sixty grams. Then the Dutch researchers Malta and Zaalberg, using a special instrument of their own, a dynamograph, found the average weight to be sixty-seven grams. Finally, Dr Durville, after supposedly isolating the soul of a living person by means of magnetism, found it to weigh only thirty grams. So, as you see, the soul—this supposed piece of matter—would surely be smaller in a person of smaller build. Or rather, no: what determines its weight? It is not whether the person is large or small. What myths and tales the human imagination invents! What do you suppose determines the weight of the soul?
The goodness or sinfulness of the person. And what do they tell us about whether Hell and Paradise exist? Listen to what Hell and Paradise are according to the spiritualists. When souls depart, they supposedly behave according to their weight, like material objects placed in a glass of water. A cork rises to the very top. Lead sinks to the very bottom. An egg remains somewhere in between. So, they say, if souls rise all the way up because they are light, that is called Paradise. If they sink all the way down because they are heavy, that is called Hell. Fine fairy tales indeed! Yet this is what so-called scientific spiritualism teaches. Take note: scientific! See what we have reduced the very idea of scientific knowledge to!
How much foolish nonsense can be spoken in the name of what is called science!
And what do we say about this Christ?
What do we say about religion? No, they have said that they will abolish religion and that spiritualism will take the place of all religions, above all Christianity. Spiritualism’s foremost enemy is not Buddhism or Islam; it is Christianity. Christianity is its great nightmare and its adversary. Since the devil was defeated beneath the Cross of Christ, he now regards every Christian cause as his risen enemy. This is precisely why spiritualism creates a religion of its own, as we said at the beginning, and declares that it will replace every religion and itself become the one religion. From a long chapter in this same book, I have selected a few individual passages
so as not to weary you with Tsinoukas’s many words. Let me add a few observations of my own, so that you may see that spiritualism is indeed a religion. My dear friends, just as someone who entered a Buddhist temple and offered sacrifice at the altar of Buddha could no longer call himself a Christian and would be committing a deadly sin, so too, when you, as a Christian, go to a medium to obtain some information you desire or to establish contact with your dead, you fall into that same sin: you offer the incense of worship to a foreign religion. And what a religion it is—a demonic one! Demonic, demonic! It is the devil himself, Beelzebub, who is worshipped there. And now, behold.
You will see every feature of a religion: worship, ritual, believers, and priests. You will see them all. I read from the book: “Those who come to communicate with spirits must always keep certain spiritualist requirements in mind, and fervent and sincere prayer is required from everyone present.” Prayer—yes, my dear friends—because prayer is communication with the Most High. In communication with spirits there are also functionaries on earth who are called mediums, or intermediaries, and who serve as guides for the spirits. In other words, they occupy the place of priests in spiritualism.
To strengthen the inner calm of those attending the séance, a favorable atmosphere is created. How? Through prayer, chanting, the burning of incense, candles in certain places, and, if available, a church organ. So there are prayers, hymns, incense, candles, and even an instrument like the organ used in the Western Church.
The prayers and hymns are to last approximately fifteen to twenty-five minutes—a brief service, in other words. Anyone wishing to communicate with a loved one must prepare himself spiritually, just as you and I fast and prepare ourselves before receiving Holy Communion. One must be prepared. On feasts of the Lord and feasts of the Theotokos, communication is forbidden. Which are the feasts of the Lord? Christmas, Pascha, and the Transfiguration are feasts of the Lord. Which are the feasts of the Theotokos? The Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple on November 21, the Annunciation on March 25, and the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15. On these feasts, they say, communication with spirits is forbidden. Why is it forbidden?
Because the devil takes to his heels! The devil runs away. Once, my dear friends, a friend in Patras told me of something that happened while he was still a secondary-school student. A spiritualist had announced that he would conduct an experiment. He had rented one of the city’s theaters—let us say the Orpheus Theater—put tickets on sale, and set the day and hour. Curious people went to see the spiritualist perform his experiments. On the stage was a small table upon which he would do whatever he intended to do. My friend, who was then a schoolboy, took a copy of the New Testament and went and hid it
under the table, tucked away beneath one side, before anyone noticed him. The appointed hour came, the audience gathered, and the spiritualist went up onto the stage. He tried to perform his experiments, but nothing happened—complete failure. He tried again, but still nothing. He began to sweat, then sweat even more; he turned red, swallowed hard, and swallowed hard again. He looked at the audience waiting anxiously to see whether he would succeed or fail—and also thinking of the money they had paid for their tickets. At last he turned to them and said, “Please forgive me. I truly do not know what has happened to me. You may leave, and on your way out you may collect your money from the box office.” What was the cause? The Gospel hidden beneath the table.
The boy had secretly placed it there, and the experiment truly failed. In other words, wherever God is, the devil disappears. Father Charalambos Vasilopoulos tells another delightful story in a small book he published on this subject. A certain spiritualist used to summon spirits every night. They would make a commotion, overturn furniture and other objects in the familiar manner, and create all kinds of noises. One night he came home late and, out of habit, summoned the spirits again. Not a sound. “What has happened?” he wondered. He summoned them again and heard a voice say, “We are not coming, because that other one came here today.” “That other one came today.” He was terrified. “Who is this other one?” he asked. His mother was sleeping in the adjoining room.
He asked her, “Who came here today?” She replied, “I am not going to put up with you bringing devils into this house every night and keeping me awake with all their commotion.” “But whom did you bring here?” he asked. “I brought the priest to perform the blessing of water.” That, then, is why the book says that spiritualist séances are forbidden on feasts of the Lord and of the Theotokos.
It says that the mystagogy of the gathering begins as follows: “We begin with prayer. Everyone present stands upright and reverently, and the leader of the circle”—you see, there is a circle there too, not only here; theirs is the devil’s circle—“begins the prayer as follows.” Now do not be alarmed by the prayer you are about to hear. You may say to me, “But earlier you told us that the Gospel drove the devil away.” Do not be alarmed: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O Heavenly King, the Comforter...” and so forth. “O Most High Lord Jesus Christ...” I did not copy it all, because there was so much of it. This is on page 60.
“O Lord Jesus Christ, who holds and governs the universe, who condescended willingly to be raised upon the Cross in order to save mankind from sin, receive us sinners also, gathered here, and have mercy on us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy. For we have sinned and acted lawlessly; we have forsaken the path of Your righteousness and walked according to the desires of our hearts. Forgive our transgressions and save us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy.” This has been taken, take note, from our Orthodox Christian service books. Farther on, amid many other things, it says: “O Lord, permit us this evening to communicate with good spirits, so that those gathered may hear the voices of their departed loved ones and be confirmed in the truth of Your teachings: that the deceased has passed from death into eternal life.” So now they ask the Lord to grant that they may communicate with spirits that very evening.
The prayer continues. “After this, all those present begin to chant as follows: ‘God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,’ four times,” just as we find it in the Paraklesis. Then they chant three or four troparia to the Theotokos from the Small Paraklesis Canon, followed by the dismissal hymn of the Saint of the day or of Sunday. The full typikon is observed. You see, it is the same arrangement found in the Church calendars: the full typikon. After all this, they sit around the table and communicate with the spirits. The book then says: “We sit in a circle around the table, and communication with the spirits takes place. Communication with the spirits must not continue for more than one hour.”
When the communication is over, another prayer of thanksgiving is offered—the one given below. I will not read it; it is of the same character. And at the end: “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.”
Does that seem strange to you? And now this gentleman, Tsinoukas, replies to the Synod and says, “There you are, gentlemen. Why do you call us atheists? We too use the prayers of the Church.” My dear friends, as for why they use the prayers of the Church—
There is one thing I want us to understand: spiritualism is one hundred percent a religion, even down to the candles and incense. It is one hundred percent a religion.
You may tell me, “When I go to a medium, I do not see such things.” These things are found further within; you do not see them. But if you enter more deeply and become an initiate of spiritualism, then you will encounter them and see them. Fifth, it terribly distorts Holy Scripture. They make extensive use of Holy Scripture—except, of course, for most of the Old Testament, which they call myth; they do not even accept Moses. They try to base themselves on Holy Scripture in order to support their dreadful false teachings. You understand, then, that to interpret Holy Scripture in this way is to distort it. It is upon this distortion that they base reincarnation.
They claim that souls depart and then return, and they base everything on Holy Scripture. If someone did not know Holy Scripture, he might say, “What good Christians they are! What wonderful, virtuous people, since they even use the Word of God!” Yet this is demonic. The devil does not hesitate to use Scripture. What did the devil say to the Lord—to Christ Himself—with such audacity? “Cast Yourself down from the pinnacle, for it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning You, to preserve You, lest You dash Your foot against a stone.’” In other words: “Holy Scripture says this about You. If You fall from up there, the angels will come and catch You below.”
They will bear You gently and safely, so that You will not strike Yourself even against a stone. And Christ answers him, “It is written again”—it is also written in Holy Scripture—“You shall not tempt the Lord your God.” Do not put God to the test. Now one quotes Holy Scripture, and the other quotes Holy Scripture. Christ speaks from Holy Scripture, and the devil also speaks from Holy Scripture—but he remains the devil. And you understand that the devil takes Scripture into his hands, my dear friends. When we do not take it into our own homes, the devil takes it and learns it very well. Then he comes to deceive us by exploiting precisely our ignorance of Holy Scripture.
What answer could we give?
Concerning the three kinds of spiritualism he describes here—or, rather, which spiritualists claim exist—he says that true spiritualism is only the scientific and religious kind, while materialistic spiritualism is utterly unacceptable and belongs only to charlatans. We could answer with a reply sent by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece to this very man. He has taken the trouble to publish it here himself, of course intending to attack the Synod. I shall now read it to you, my dear friends: “To Mr. Tsinoukas, Nea Sfageia, Piraeus.”
“Athens, 16 December 1953.”
“At its session on the third day of the current month and year, the Holy Synod took cognizance of your memoranda dated 31 August and 15 October concerning the question of spiritualism, and resolved to inform you that—” He had submitted two reports to the Synod, attacking Kantiotis and Trembelas. And now the Synod replies. He even prints in large, bold letters precisely what it tells him and what it tells us: “The Orthodox Christian Church makes no distinction whatsoever between—”
“—scientific and religious spiritualism.” This is the distinction he himself had introduced. The Synod then reminds him once again of its well-known decision against spiritualism, which was also published in the official journal of the Church of Greece, called Ekklesia, on 15 May 1951. In other words: “Mr. Tsinoukas, Mr. Spiritualist, you are trying to distance yourself from spiritualism by appearing under another mask. You claim not to concern yourself with those lower forms of materialistic spiritualism, but speak instead of scientific spiritualism, which includes telepathy, strange phenomena, ectoplasm, and materializations—the things we discussed last time—and of religious spiritualism.” I shall never forget a certain widow in Athens, whose name I will not mention.
She held a prominent position and was highly educated. She said that she communicated very often with the spirit of her husband and found great consolation in it—great consolation. Well then, ladies and gentlemen, you should know what the Synod says: for us, for the Church, there is no distinction between scientific, utilitarian, and materialistic spiritualism. For us, it is all spiritualism. What else did you say? Secondly, what can we answer concerning the spirits with whom spiritualists claim to communicate? Are they truly the souls of the departed? Father Vasilopoulos gives another example.
Once in Patras, a circle of spiritualists summoned the spirit of Jesus Christ, and “Christ,” in quotation marks, came. They asked what they should do now that it was Great Lent, and “Christ”—always in quotation marks—answered them: “I want you to keep a very strict fast. Eat only dry food once a day.” They obeyed immediately and fasted until Pascha. Then they summoned the spirit of Christ again and asked whether He was satisfied. “Christ” answered, “Not yet. I want you to continue eating dry food once a day until Pentecost.” Forty days before Pascha and fifty afterward: ninety days—three months, my dear friends. What would the result have been? Those people would have wasted away and died of hunger. Then they began to grow suspicious, as the saying goes, and prick up their ears. “But at Pascha Christians eat meat, and now ‘Christ’ has told us to continue a strict dry fast!” They went to Father Eusebius Matthopoulos, the founder of Zoe, who was still alive then, and told him what had happened. “My poor children,” he said, “have you not understood that this is the devil deceiving you?” So let us see whether these are truly the souls of the dead. If I call upon the departed Kostas or Peter, will they really come? John Chrysostom gives a beautiful answer.
It is most beautiful and perfectly clear, and it also touches on another subject: magic, which we discussed the time before last. I have the text with me, but I shall read it in translation so that we may understand it better: “What wonder is it, then, if demons deceive and destroy the many who believe that the souls of the dead have become demons? We must not even entertain such a thought. But you will ask: How is it, then, that sorcerers slaughter children and afterward claim to work together with their souls?” You see, as I told you, that black magic goes so far as to commit crimes. John Chrysostom mentions this too. You see why they did it.
They slaughtered mainly children, because an adult is not so easily trapped. Very often, when newspapers report missing children, a proportion of those disappearances involve children who have become victims of black magic within international circles. On the one hand, they use the child’s blood for various magical rites; on the other, they claim to use the child’s soul in committing the various crimes conceived by the sorcerer. But the text says: “Tell me, how do you know this? Many say that sorcerers slaughter children.”
“But how do you know that the souls of those children become the sorcerers’ accomplices? Very well, we know that sorcerers slaughter children and claim that their souls work with them. We know of the slaughter—but how do you know that the children’s souls truly become their accomplices?” He continues: “The demons themselves cry out and say, ‘I am the soul of such-and-such a person.’” You call, for example, upon the departed Peter, and someone comes and says, “I am Peter; I have come.” Saul called Samuel, and a voice said, “I am Samuel; I have come.” But it was not Samuel. This is only a diabolical trick and deception. It is not the soul of the dead person speaking, but the devil pretending to be that person in order to deceive those who hear. All such claims—that the souls return—are the words of drunken old women.
They are tales used to frighten children. Listen carefully: there is no soul which, after being separated from the body, wanders here upon the earth. John Chrysostom says this because many believe that a soul spends three days wandering around the house where the departed person lived, or wanders through the cemetery, or that during the Paschal season the souls come to the cemetery and at Pentecost depart for their appointed place. These things are, to use John Chrysostom’s own phrase, the words of drunken old women. They are not real. He then explains:
Holy Scripture says, “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God.” The souls of the righteous and devout are in God’s hand, and the souls of sinners also depart from here immediately. The souls of sinners depart; they do not become ghosts. As I told you last time about so-called haunted houses, it is not the souls of people violently killed in a house or thrown from a cliff that linger there as ghosts, appearing, making noises, dragging chains, groaning, and uttering mournful cries. Those are demons. The souls even of sinful people, he says, depart from here. This is clear from the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus.
The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus shows us this. The soul of righteous Lazarus departed: “The beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom.” The Rich Man also died and was buried, and then the dialogue in Hades begins. Neither the sinful Rich Man’s soul nor the righteous man’s soul wanders here upon the earth. Each goes to its own place. The demons roam about like vagrants throughout the world, deceiving the faithful so as to draw them into their own worship and tear them away from the true worship of God. We therefore reach a third conclusion: spiritualism, my dear friends, is a religion.
As I have said for the third or fourth time, it seeks to replace every religion, and above all Christianity, against which it directs an undying hatred. I believe you now understand that it is the religion of the devil, possessing every element of a religion: worship, ritual, revelation, faith, priests, and followers. What is Satan’s method? It is well known: counterfeiting. Ever since the devil was trampled and crushed beneath the Cross of Christ, he has had no true power, and from that time onward he has resorted to counterfeiting. Now you will understand why I mentioned this earlier, and why they use these prayers.
Spiritualism says, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” But who is this Trinitarian God? Did he not tell us earlier that the Trinitarian God is the center—how did he put it here?—the center of the electrons? “This universal electronic center of the materialists, we metapsychists call God: a person in three hypostases, spirit.” And yet they speak of the Trinitarian God. Then they use “O Heavenly King,” “O Comforter, the Spirit,” the Trisagion, and a prayer copied word for word from the service books, a prayer made with the sign of the Cross. Then troparia and the Paraklesis. What is all this? Incense, compunction, silence—what is all this, my beloved? Is it counterfeit religion or is it not?
Spiritualism did not dare to pray openly to the devil, saying “Beelzebub,” as we saw in that contract in the Solomonic book of magic. Instead, it says, “Lord Jesus Christ.” Please, let us pay very close attention to this. Magic and spiritualism are like magic spells dressed in religious words. I tell you, it is counterfeit religion; it is sleight of hand by which the devil tries to deceive the faithful. Magic and spiritualism are sisters nursed on the same milk, with the same devil as their father. But let us not be afraid. Let us not be afraid. The devil does not have as much power as he appears to have.
What he does before our eyes may seem astonishing, but it is not. I will give you a simple example. If I were to stand up now, take this table, and lift it one meter into the air, would you say I had done anything astonishing? No; you could do that yourselves. But if, at that same moment, I became invisible to your eyes while continuing to hold the table, would that seem astonishing? You would say yes. Why? Because you could not see me. Yet I would still be holding the table in the same way. So when a little table rises during a spiritualist séance, the devil is holding it. Of course he cannot be seen, because the devil is a spirit.
He holds it; he has the power to hold it, just as I have the power to lift this table. That is what astonishes us and makes us imagine that the devil possesses such great power. Do you know how much power the devil has, my beloved? You heard it in the Gospel, as John Chrysostom reminds us. When he came out of the demoniac of the Gergesenes, he had to ask Christ for permission even to enter the pigs—forgive the blunt expression, the swine. The devil does not even have the right to enter swine without permission. That is the extent of his power. He merely frightens people; he is a maker of noise. He is like someone banging empty tins together. If someone outside were dragging ten large milk cans along the road,
there would be a terrible uproar. “What is happening outside? The whole world must be falling apart!” Yet there would not be a crowd out there, brothers. Whom, then, are we afraid of? I say this because some people become frightened. The devil? Do not be afraid. One of the devil’s devices is to provoke fear in the faithful. A believer is never afraid of the devil; he simply takes him seriously. Pay attention: he takes him seriously. The devil is an enemy who must be reckoned with, but never feared. Why? Because the believer has Christ with him. What, then, was our purpose in discussing these subjects—and, God willing, others to follow, as you will see? Our purpose, my beloved, is to identify the enemy’s position. We must understand that the devil is my enemy and that, through the systems he creates, he is the enemy of the Church, whether he comes under the mantle of spiritualism,
under the mantle of magic, under the mantle of Theosophy—which I will not discuss; I mention it only by name—or under the mantle of Freemasonry. The devil has many suits in his wardrobe and appears in whichever one suits the occasion. When dealing with educated people, he comes dressed as Freemasonry. When dealing with simpler people, he comes as magic. But beneath it all, it is always the devil. That is precisely why I say that we must expose him. There is a fable of Aesop in which that patient four-legged creature put on a lion’s skin and approached the other animals. They all ran away in terror. “A lion, everyone!” the animals cried. “A lion!” But then someone looked more carefully and said, “Those look like rather large ears to me.”
It was our friend, the patient four-legged creature—the donkey. They pulled away the lion’s skin, and there stood the donkey in all his glory. Then the animals ran over and gave him a good thrashing, so to speak. In the same way, my beloved—I speak like this so that we may understand—we too must expose the devil and his positions and give him a good thrashing. “So it is you hiding here! Now we see you, understand you, and know your method. You cannot deceive us.” This is what the Apostle Paul says to the Ephesians, in chapter 4, verse 14, and chapter 6, verse 11: “That we should no longer be children.” Let us no longer be infants.
“Tossed by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine.” A ship tossed this way and that is driven by the waves and carried here and there by every wind—by every doctrine we happen to hear in life. Let us not be weather vanes. Someone comes along who is a Baptist, a fakir, a Freemason, a magician, or who knows what else, and we exclaim, “Oh, what is this?” No; we should know what all these things are. Let us not be led and carried about “by the trickery of men.” Do you see? “By the trickery of men.” If we are naive, people gamble with us as though we were dice, “by craftiness in deceitful scheming.” But “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” That is the point: “against the schemes of the devil.” These are calculated methods.
The devil uses them to deceive us. We must identify precisely these positions of the enemy and know how we are to walk through life. We must also understand clearly that spiritualism and magic are utterly hostile to Christianity. There is no point of contact whatsoever between them and Christianity. Once we know this, let us heed what the Prophet Elijah said: “How long will you limp on both knees?” How long will you go limping, now on one leg and now on the other—now with Christ and now with the devil? And God warns us especially through the Prophet Isaiah:
“If they say to you, ‘Seek those who speak from their bellies and those who call out from the earth, those who babble empty words and speak from the belly.’” And if they tell you—as so often happens—“Your child is not doing well; he is ill. There have been failures and ‘bad luck’ in the house. Things are going badly; there are illnesses,” some neighbor or relative will certainly rush forward and say, “Someone must have cast a spell on you.” “And what should I do, Maria?” “Go and have the spell broken.” Go and have it broken. But God says here: “If they say to you, ‘Seek those who speak from their bellies’”—go to the spiritualists,
those who “call out from the earth,” supposedly summoning a spirit as Saul did—that is, the dead, the spirits of the dead—“those who babble empty words,” and “those who speak from the belly.” Those who speak from the belly are ventriloquists. Such people speak as though from the belly. This is what I explained last time: spiritualism—forgive me, I mean the devil—is an “I,” just as I am an “I.” Each of us is a person. My own “I” is pushed aside; I fall into a hypnotic state, and the devil’s “I” speaks. Therefore, it is not I who speak; the devil speaks through me. The ancient term for this—forgive me—is “one who speaks from the belly.” This is ventriloquism. What will you say if someone tells you, “Why do you not go to them for help?” You will answer, “Should not a people seek their God?”
Can “the people of God”—the Christians, as we would say—not ask God for whatever they need? Did you hear that? “Should not a people seek their God?” Will the people of God not seek from God whatever they need? “Why do they seek the dead on behalf of the living?” Yet people sit there asking the dead about matters concerning the living. This is Isaiah, chapter 8, verse 19. And so, my beloved, let us conclude. Spells have no hold over a believer. Spiritualism, with its hypnosis—and hypnosis is one means used by spiritualism—has no hold over a believer. But even if
God should permit—pay attention to this detail—someone to come under the influence of an evil spirit, Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says that he should prefer to suffer, even prefer to die. Do not go to the devil to be healed. You will receive a martyr’s crown, just as the ancient martyrs did when they were told, “Throw a handful of incense upon the altar of Zeus or Caesar, and not only will we spare your life, but we will also raise you to a very high position.” Do not do it. Prefer to die. We have our Church. We have Holy Unction. We also have exorcisms. Do we not drive out the devil through prayer? Do you not have a priest nearby? Make the sign of the Cross over your child or your loved one
three times. Say the Our Father. I tell you to say the Our Father because we all know it and it is safe. Do not say some other prayer—that is, do not mix in other words. Do not say, “As it came, so let it depart,” or any of those things used in spells. Nothing of the kind. Just the Our Father. Do you have a little oil from your vigil lamp? Anoint the person with it and pray inwardly: “My God, heal my child; heal my loved one.” The person will recover; you will see. And if God permits that he does not recover, one should prefer to suffer rather than submit to the influence of the devil. Thus, my beloved, when we truly live a life in Christ, we will possess both the true faith and a true spiritual life, while the devil will stand far away, raging against us.
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” If God is with us, then who—even the devil himself—can do us harm?

να έρθουν σε επικοινωνία με το πνεύμα αυτό, να μιλήσουν και να παρηγορηθούν. Αλλά ας τα δούμε λίγο καλύτερα τα πράγματα. Μέσα σ' αυτές τις κατηγορίες του πνευματισμού, του υλιστικού, επιστημονικού και θρησκευτικού, ποια είναι η καθεαυτού διδασκαλία; Και πρώτα περί Θεού. Τι λέμε περί του Θεού; Βέβαια, εκ πρώτης όψεως μας λέγουν ότι ο Θεός είναι τρεις υποστάσεις. Αυτός ο Τσινούκας καταφέρεται εναντίον του Τρεμπέλα και λέει ότι εμείς είμαστε θρησκευτικοί άνθρωποι. Γιατί αυτός ο κύριος καθηγητής μάς λέει ότι είμαστε έξω από το περιβόλι του χριστιανισμού;
Η ψυχή, αγαπητοί μου, έχει βάρος 60 γραμμάρια, δηλαδή 20 γραμμάρια. Έπειτα οι Ολλανδοί Μάλτσα και Ζάαλμπεργκ, δι' ειδικού μηχανήματος, ειδικής των ΕΜΕ, του δυναμογράφου, εύρον το βάρος κατά μέσον όρον 67 γραμμάρια. Τέλος, ο γιατρός Ντουρβίλ, επί απομονώσεως διά μαγνητισμού ψυχής ζώντος ατόμου, εύρεν μόνον 30 γραμμάρια. Οπότε, όπως βλέπετε, η ψυχή, η ύλη, ε, βέβαια, σε ένα μικρό πυρήθα είναι μικρότερη ασφαλώς, ή μάλλον όχι. Το βάρος πού οφείλεται; Όχι αν είναι το άτομο μικρό ή μεγάλο. Τι μύθοι, τι ρήματα φτιάχνουν οι ανθρώπινες φαντασίες! Από τι λέτε εξαρτάται το βάρος της ψυχής;
Αυτόν τον Χριστόν τι λέμε;
Πνευματισμός: «Εις το όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος». Μα ποιος είναι αυτός ο Τριαδικός Θεός; Δεν είπε προηγουμένως, δεν μας είπε ο ίδιος, ότι ο Τριαδικός Θεός είναι το κέντρο, πώς το είπε εδώ πέρα, το κέντρο, λέει, των ηλεκτρονίων; «Αυτό το παγκόσμιο ηλεκτρονικό κέντρον των υλιστών, εμείς οι μεταψυχικοί αποκαλούμε Θεόν, τρισυπόστατον πρόσωπον, πνεύμα». Εν τούτοις, Τριαδικόν Θεόν. Μετά, «Βασιλεύ Ουράνιε», «Παράκλητον Πνεύμα», Τρισάγιον, προσευχή που θα ήταν απαράλλακτος, παρμένη από τα ευχολόγια, σταυροειδής προσευχή. Μετά τροπάρια, Παράκληση. Όλα αυτά τι είναι; Λιβάνι, ξέρω εγώ, κατάνυξη, σιωπή. Όλα αυτά τι είναι, αγαπητοί μου; Είναι ή δεν είναι νοθεία;
«Ει ο Θεός υπέρ ημών, τις καθ' ημών;». Εάν ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας, τότε ποιος μπορεί, ούτε και αυτός ο διάβολος, να μας κάνει κακό;
