Summary
The Church’s marriage prayers reveal that a Christian home must follow the purposes established by Scripture rather than the values of the world. The Church asks God to protect married couples from slander, family conflict, temptation, and the pervasive worldly mentality that normalizes conduct contrary to Christian life. Marriage is meant to help both spouses remain faithful, attain salvation and theosis, and journey together beyond death into the Kingdom of God.

There are three basic purposes of marriage, and the course a marriage takes will be determined by how well those purposes are understood. For if we do not know the purposes of marriage, or if we do not understand them in the order established by Holy Scripture—the Word of God conveyed through the Church—then the marriage will certainly not follow the right course. It will be influenced by elements foreign to the Gospel and the Church, and it will not be a successful marriage. We must now offer a few more reflections drawn from the first three very rich prayers, before the readings from the Apostle and the Gospel. Of course,
we are not making a schoolroom analysis of the text. We are simply drawing out a few thoughts that shed more light on the many, countless aspects of the Mystery of marriage. From the first prayer, we select one beautiful and highly characteristic passage for the couple setting out upon married life. Through the priest, the Church prays: “And grant them, O Lord, the dew of heaven from above and the abundance of the earth. Fill their homes with wheat, wine, oil, and every good thing,”
so that they may share with those in need.
Grant them, O Lord, the dew of heaven and the abundance of the earth—“abundance” here means richness and plenty. In other words, from the rich bounty of the earth, fill their home with wheat, wine, oil, and every other good thing. These three are representative of all material blessings. That is why, at the Artoklasia, the blessing of the loaves, we set out the loaves, a bottle of oil, and a bottle of wine. As I repeat, these represent all the good things a household may possess. And the purpose is that the couple may share them with those who have material needs. In other words: fill their storerooms and their treasuries so that they may also help the poor.
This is one point from the first prayer. At this point, the prayer truly asks that the newlywed couple be given every good thing, as we have said. In this way, husband and wife are appointed as God’s stewards—generous stewards of God—who must always be ready to supply whatever is lacking, whether material blessings from the abundance of the earth or spiritual blessings from the dew of heaven above.
We should also say that the warmth of love in the new household must always remain, and must always keep the door of the home open to anyone seeking material or spiritual assistance.
Amid all this, one rich virtue emerges, a virtue that we Greeks especially boast to foreigners that we have cultivated for many centuries, even from before Christ: hospitality. Hospitality in its broadest sense. This new couple, as they establish their household, must keep their doors open and allow other people to share in their material and spiritual blessings. Hospitality, then—the spirit of hospitality: always being able to give; never closing the doors of the home. It should be a cheerful home, a blessed home, a home through which God, by the hands of the husband and wife, gives rich material and spiritual blessings to others.
So we mean the word in its broadest sense: hospitality. Indeed, we could say that Holy Scripture speaks specifically about hospitality. In his Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul tells us: “Let brotherly love continue.” Let it remain permanently among you. Do not let brotherly love run away. Love other people. Love them with all your heart.
“Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have entertained angels without knowing it.” For through the virtue of hospitality, some people unknowingly received angels as guests. This plainly calls to mind Abraham and Lot, who later received the two angels after they had departed from Abraham’s hospitality. But there is something more. In one of his writings, for example, the Apostle Paul instructs the Church—the local Churches—to enroll among the widows under their protection those who are genuinely in need. He asks for a certain criterion, a kind of testimony concerning the widow. What is it? Please listen to the criterion: “Let a widow be enrolled.” He says that the widow who is worthy to be entered on the Church’s rolls and receive its protection must be “well attested for good works.” Others must testify that, during her life,
while her husband was still alive and she possessed every good thing, she performed good works. “If she has shown hospitality”—if she gladly welcomed strangers and received them into her home. “If she has washed the feet of the saints”—if she washed the feet of Christians, who at that time were called saints. Perhaps we should know this as well, because it reveals that the purpose of a Christian’s life is to become a saint. In those days people walked barefoot or wore rudimentary sandals, and the dust of the unpaved roads made their feet dirty. Whenever someone entered a house, his feet had to be washed. This task was usually performed by servants.
If there were no servants, the master or mistress of the house did it. Yet this phrase also has a broader meaning. “To wash the feet of the saints” means to serve the needs of other Christians. And the Apostle continues: “If she has relieved the afflicted”—if she likewise supported those in tribulation, understood their plight, and proved able to help them. “If she has devoted herself to every good work.” Please take note: this is the criterion for a widow to be enrolled among those protected by the Church. In other words, the Apostle Paul is, in effect, asking these women to give an account:
When the Church solemnly blessed your marriage, it plainly prayed that God would grant you every good thing. Now you yourselves are in need. So what did you do when God gave you those blessings? Did you prove worthy of God’s gifts, granted through the Church’s prayer and supplication? You see, then, that the Church asks for the couple to receive an abundance of good things, not so that they may become attached to them, and not so that these blessings may become an occasion for worldly living, but so that they may become an occasion for the glory of God and for meeting the needs of the saints of the Church, the faithful of the Church. In the second prayer, I find three petitions.
The first petition says: “Bless them, O Lord our God, as You blessed Abraham and Sarah.” The prayer continues by asking for the same blessing given to the couples Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and the Patriarchs, Joseph and Asenath, Moses and Zipporah, Joachim and Anna, and Zacharias and Elizabeth. Blessed couples—a beautiful list set before us as a reminder. But the prayer asks God to bless this couple. Yes, a blessing.
My beloved, a blessing is the starting point of every undertaking in life. In the Old Testament, blessing was so fundamental that no work could ever begin unless a blessing had first been received. That is why, in the Old Testament, blessing was the Alpha and the Omega of every undertaking. If the blessing was secured, then every difficulty would surely be overcome, and success would be the fruit. The same is true here. Every effort to build a house and a household without God’s blessing is labor in vain. Husband and wife must clearly understand that what they need is the blessing of God. Many people say, “As long as my pocket is full.”
Your pocket may be full, but who filled it for you, my brother? God filled it because He blessed you, yet you fail to see God’s blessing. Saint Nikodemos says that some people do something else: they kiss their own hands and say, “May these hands of mine be well, since they provide me with work and prosperity in my home.” But who gave you your hands, my brother? A single germ can lay you up in bed and make you spend your entire fortune on doctors. Then we shall see whether your hands or your wallet are strong enough to help you maintain your household and continue along the path of life. My beloved, the blessing of God is the first and the last. If we have it in our home, we have everything.
Saint Kosmas of Aetolia once went to Zakynthos and saw a mansion being built. Speaking in the Spirit of God, he said, “Why are they building this house, this mansion, when no one is going to live in it?” And indeed, no one ever had time to live in that house. They died before it was completed. A house and a household are two things closely bound together. The house is the bricks; the household is the people within it. Holy Scripture says: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Unless God blesses it and puts forth His hand so that both house and household may be built, then in vain
do husband and wife struggle to create anything in their life. Therefore, my beloved, pay close attention to this. Our ideal is not simply to build a little house. Couples often say, “We will make a little home of our own.” Our ideal should be to have God’s blessing so that we may make that home. Furthermore, marriage is an extremely delicate and vulnerable thing, I would say, and it needs great protection, great tenderness, and great care. After the blessing, then, something else is needed: the safeguarding of the newlyweds and their household. That is precisely why the Church prays, “Preserve them.”
“O Lord our God, as You preserved Noah in the ark, preserve them. O Lord our God, as You preserved Jonah in the belly of the sea creature, preserve them. O Lord our God, as You preserved the Three Holy Youths from the fire, sending down upon them dew from heaven, preserve them.” Many fierce winds will strike this household. Many circumstances will arise to assail the new couple. There will be malicious insinuations and slanders. Someone will come and tell the husband, “I saw your wife talking with the neighbor,” even though the wife has done nothing wrong. Thus an accusation is planted. Someone else will come and tell the wife, “I saw your husband laughing and joking with another woman.”
Another accusation is planted. Many charges will arise, as will contempt from relatives and friends. Perhaps the young woman did not have as large a dowry as—not the groom, but his mother—wanted. So the mother-in-law may despise the young woman and refuse to accept her into the home, even though she is a good and honorable woman. All these situations shake the couple. Many enemies come to assault the very walls of their shared life. What must happen? God must guard them here—guard them closely—so that they may escape all these attacks and also escape one terrible enemy:
the influences of this present age, of this world. They must escape the influence of what is commonly called the worldly mindset. Who will guard the husband and wife? God will.
I must say something especially about this last danger: the worldly mentality. It is like dampness. Dampness is not easy to keep out. When the weather is damp, a person who has broken a bone will feel that broken bone ache even while sitting beside the radiator, because dampness penetrates everywhere. A married couple who love one another may perhaps escape malicious insinuations, slander, accusations, and contempt. But will they be able to escape the spirit of the world, the worldly mentality? That is the great question.
The worldly mentality is a treacherous enemy. What does it mean? It means thinking as the world thinks, acting as the world acts, and following the ways of the world. It is when we say, “Everyone does it this way, so we will do the same.” It means lacking the discernment to judge and say:
“We must not behave as the world does.” Everyone goes swimming in the summer, and they say it does not matter if we miss Church, because everyone does the same. No. You may go swimming, but you will say, “First we shall go to Church.” We must live not as the world lives, but as Christians ought to live. The world dresses in this way. No; we will dress modestly. Why? Because Christ desires modesty.
Thank you. We must pay very close attention to this matter of the worldly mentality. I will not hide this from you: if anyone among us here—even one of us priests—were to boast that he had completely escaped the worldly mentality and never thought in a worldly way at all, he would either be lying or would not understand his own condition. It seems to me that we cannot escape it entirely. But we must keep our eyes watchful, observing ourselves and asking, “Am I allowing worldly influences into my life?” Here, however, the prayer mentions three events, three episodes. As I told you, it invokes three historical events: Noah’s ark.
It says, “O Lord, You preserved Noah in the ark.” Preserve this household. Place it within that household called the ark, just as You once preserved Noah from the flood. The prayer also recalls: O Lord, as You preserved Jonah in the belly of the sea creature, preserve this household. And again, as the three youths whom Nebuchadnezzar cast into the fiery furnace suffered no harm, so preserve this household. Why does the prayer recall and refer to these three events? Is it merely trying to draw some loose comparison? No. These three events are types—prophetic images—of three fundamental dogmas of our faith.
The fiery furnace with the Three Holy Youths inside is the type, the image, of the Holy Trinity—the first, fundamental, and foundational dogma of our faith. Jonah in the belly of the sea creature, as Christ Himself interpreted it, signifies Christ’s Resurrection, the cornerstone of the faith. And the third event, Noah’s ark, signifies the Church. Three historical events; three types that reveal these three great dogmas of the faith: the Holy Trinity, Christ’s Resurrection, and the Church. These are the great landmarks of every Christian’s faith.
First, the Holy Trinity is so fundamental that if a person does not truly understand and examine this dogma, he may stray onto very dangerous paths. If you do not believe in the Holy Trinity, then from the outset you do not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ. And when you do not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ, your salvation is lost. You can no longer speak of salvation. Everything flows from the Holy Trinity. Indeed, the Holy Trinity is an image of the Church and, in a certain sense, even an image of marriage. Why? Because in the Holy Trinity there are three persons and one essence, while in marriage there are two persons united as one, “and the two shall become one flesh.” At every moment, you must embody that light which already shines upon you and reflect it all around you.
You must reflect the dogma of the Holy Trinity through faithfulness within your marriage. As for the Resurrection, it will determine the way you live in practice. If you, husband and wife, do not believe that you will rise again, then both of you will say, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” As for the Church, through her Mysteries she will give you grace, salvation, and the right path to follow. These three landmarks of the faith must guide the life and journey of the newly married couple. These three dogmas must guard them from every worldly influence, every hostile attack, and every opposing current coming from atheistic or half-atheistic people of the world that
may strike against the married couple. Every age—including our own, and this must be said—is deeply materialistic, atheistic, and opposed to the Holy Trinity. To oppose the Holy Trinity means not believing in the divinity of Jesus Christ. How will the couple stand? How will they keep their faith and their course steadfast, my beloved, unless they begin with faith in these three great landmarks of the faith? My beloved, you see how marriage and the marriage service reveal so many dimensions of the newlyweds’ life. And when these young people set out toward marriage—I said “young,” and that strikes me—
the service books call those who are about to marry “newlyweds.” By contrast, I found in one manuscript that when the couple are elderly and entering a second marriage, it calls them “elderly newlyweds.” I laughed when I read it: “elderly newlyweds.” The word “newlywed” does not simply mean that they are new to marriage, but also that they are young in age. We should pay attention to this point. Let us not wait until we are past thirty or forty to marry. Take care over this. We spoke about it last time as well. John Chrysostom emphasizes it especially. Why? Because, unfortunately, immorality and sin almost always come first—almost always.
The third point is this: as the couple journey through life, they also need God continually to remember them. This is expressed in the prayer: “Remember them, O Lord our God, as You remembered Enoch, Shem, and Elijah.” Remember them, O Lord, as You remembered Enoch, Shem, and Elijah. Those whom God remembers are those whose names are written in the book of life. Holy Scripture says plainly that God does not remember sinners. This does not mean that God lacks memory; rather, “He does not remember” means that He does not acknowledge them as His own. And when we say, “Lord, remember us,” this is what we mean.
It means, “Lord, have mercy on us.” When the thief on the Cross said, “Remember me, O Lord,” this is what he meant: “Have mercy on me, O Lord. Remember me, O Lord.” For God to remember us is a great thing, my beloved. Therefore, it seems to me that husbands and wives should often say this little prayer from the depths of their hearts: “Remember us, O Lord our God. Remember us; have mercy on us, O Lord our God.” It will be an echo of the prayer they first heard during their wedding. But let us notice something here. These three petitions,
these three names mentioned here—“Remember them, O Lord, as You remembered Elijah, Enoch, and Shem”—were they included by chance? No. These three persons were taken up into heaven. Holy Scripture tells us that Enoch was no longer found. God took him, it says, because he had been pleasing to God. He was a deeply devout and righteous man, and God translated him. God took him; he was translated and did not taste death. He was taken up alive. Holy Scripture says nothing about Shem, but the Hebrew tradition preserved this account. Concerning Elijah, Holy Scripture tells us in many places that he was taken up as though into heaven—not into the Kingdom of God,
but into some heavenly place known to God. They were taken up bodily. Their being taken up is a foreshadowing, a prototype, of the Ascension of Christ. Yet Christ’s Ascension goes before and prepares the way for our own ascent, I ask you to note. Before I continue with this, however, one could say that this ascent—speaking first in a moral sense—is nothing other than turning our eyes and hearts toward heaven. Husband and wife must certainly cherish the ideal of a love that binds them very firmly until the grave and beyond the grave. But let us pay attention to something.
Their love must not become the chief purpose of their lives. It is a purpose of marriage, but it is not the chief purpose of life. Otherwise, by gazing only at one another, they will fall into idolatry, each making an idol of the other. Instead, bound together by love, they must look upward toward a common purpose. “Set your minds on things above,” says the Apostle Paul, and he immediately grounds this in doctrine: “where Christ is.” Look toward the things above, he says, where Christ is—not merely where the stars are, nor merely toward some desired homeland, the Kingdom of God,
as though it were distant and separate from Christ. For where God is, there also is His Kingdom. Why? Because the Kingdom of God is Christ. The Kingdom of God is not something apart from Christ. Christ is the Kingdom of God.
“Where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God”—as man, seated at the right hand of the majesty of God the Father. “Set your minds on things above,” he says, “not on things on the earth.” For earthly goods, as we said earlier, are simply tools, so to speak, that make our life sustainable. They must not become the purpose of our lives. Therefore, the remembrance of these three names should remind us that married couples have a journey before them: an upward journey, one that must be rekindled at every moment so that they may avoid the danger of becoming attached to material possessions. Consider this.
A couple marry and go to their home. How many gifts await them! I remember passing a house in my neighborhood long ago and seeing all the railings of that house, and those of the house opposite, covered with heavy blankets and carpets, as though a market were being held. It was a display of the woman’s dowry. Marriage is, of course, surrounded by many material goods. Friends and acquaintances will bring gifts, and these gifts will be useful in family life. But is there not a danger that the couple may become attached to these possessions? One dinner set, two sets, three sets. The first may be made from an ordinary material, another from a finer one—silver, even gold. Ah, amid all this abundance, might they begin to
forget their journey toward heaven? There is indeed a danger. “Set your minds on things above.” In other words, the couple must take care that when God calls them, saying, “Husband and wife, come to Church; come and receive Holy Communion; come to Holy Confession,” they do not answer through the husband’s lips, “I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.” This is the familiar phrase from the parable of the Great Supper: “I have married, and I cannot come.” Truly, says John Chrysostom, here you are slandering God. Why? Because you claim that marriage is an obstacle, although God Himself blessed your marriage. If marriage becomes an obstacle to your salvation, then you are slandering God, because God did not give you marriage to hinder your salvation, but, on the contrary, to help you attain it.
Later, in the final prayer of the service, we shall hear the priest say something very important. As he removes the crowns from the newlyweds, he says, “Receive their crowns into Your Kingdom.” Receive them. One manuscript says that the priest takes these crowns and places them inside the sanctuary. He leaves them there while the Divine Liturgy is celebrated and says, “To the glory of God.” Here, “receive” means “take.” Take, the prayer says; receive their crowns into the Kingdom. I ask you: does this not imply that the heads must depart together with the crowns? For what would the crowns do by themselves in the Kingdom of God?
In other words, together with the crowns, the husband and wife themselves must also be taken up. Therefore, my beloved, they too must journey into the Kingdom of God. This is the kind of ascent they must make. They will die; the hour of death will come. And when they reach the farther shore, the Kingdom of God, they will be together there once again. Take care: they will not be husband and wife there, but as husband and wife they labored so that they might be together again. For this is the purpose of marriage: that they help one another reach that place, reach theosis, and enter into new bonds of kinship—not the kinship of marriage any longer, but
a new kinship, for in the Kingdom of God all are brothers and sisters. Thus the journey of marriage does not end at the grave. It continues beyond the grave. Blessed are those husbands and wives who remain faithful, pure, and chaste until the grave. Yes, my beloved. And the prayer has one more petition beginning with “Remember”: “Remember them, O Lord our God, as You remembered Your Holy Forty Martyrs, sending down upon them crowns from heaven.” Remember them, O Lord, as You remembered Your Holy Forty Martyrs and sent them crowns from heaven.
Does this remembrance of the Holy Forty Martyrs imply some outward connection between the martyrs’ crowns and the crowns of the newlyweds? No, my beloved. There is no outward connection, but there is something much deeper. First of all, this remembrance of the Holy Forty Martyrs anticipates the crowning of the newlyweds, which will take place shortly. But it also reveals something else. Pay close attention to this point. It reveals that married life is equally honorable and glorious in the sight of God and is itself counted worthy to receive the heavenly crown at the end.
In other words, marriage has something of martyrdom within it. How so? Listen. During the procession of the newlyweds, after “Rejoice, O Isaiah”—that is, “Leap for joy, Isaiah; your prophecy has been fulfilled: the Virgin has given birth to the Redeemer.” We shall come to this and speak about it next time. Immediately afterward we hear: “O Holy Martyrs, who fought the good fight and received your crowns.” O Holy Martyrs, you who fought well and were therefore crowned, intercede with the Lord that He may have mercy on our souls also. What does this show? Crowns, the Holy Forty Martyrs,
and the troparion of the Holy Martyrs—all this shows that deep within marriage there is a martyrdom pleasing to God. It is the martyrdom that two different people are called to undergo as they adapt their lives to the same yoke. Do you think the yoke of marriage is easy? Most of you gentlemen are surely married, and you understand that the yoke of marriage is not at all easy. This yoke of married life includes the martyrdom of bearing with one another; the martyrdom of patient endurance, as each endures the other; and the martyrdom of being perfected, as each waits for the other to learn and grow. If one spouse is not very faithful, the other must struggle to bring that spouse to faith. Or perhaps one is immoral or living dissolutely, and the other struggles to help. What do you think? Is all this not a martyrdom? It is a prolonged martyrdom. Therefore, if husband and wife manage to reach the end of their married life without murmuring and with some measure of success, they will certainly receive the crown of martyrdom, just as those who gave their lives while confessing Jesus Christ received the crown of martyrdom.
The Apostle Paul says plainly that they will be saved and will surely receive the crown. When? “If they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.” But for faith, love, holiness, and self-control to be fulfilled and made real—including what we discussed last time concerning abstinence and the rest—requires toil, sweat, and blood. It is martyrdom. The crowns, then, symbolize both glory and martyrdom. And our Lord Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom of our Church, wore a crown of martyrdom for His bride, the Church.
Let us take something from the third prayer. This prayer contains something very important. It is brief, but very concentrated: “O Holy God, who fashioned man, send forth Your hand from Your holy dwelling place and join Your servant, so-and-so, to Your handmaid, so-and-so, for by You a woman is joined to a man.” O Holy God, send Your right hand from the place where You dwell. Notice what a beautiful expression this is: “Send Your hand,” not “Stretch out Your hand,” but “Send Your hand.”
That strikes me deeply. Come now and join, bind together, these two people—Your servant, named so-and-so, for the name matters, and Your handmaid, named so-and-so. For You said in the Old Testament that “by the Lord a woman is joined to a man.” It is by God that the woman is joined to the man.
When these words are spoken, the rubrics immediately state that the priest joins the right hands of those being married. He brings their hands together and unites them. You have all surely noticed this. Here, my beloved, we have reached the principal moment of marriage, the most fundamental moment. It is just as in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, where we ascend step by step toward the fulfillment of the Mystery: the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ at the words, “Make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ,” and so forth, “changing them by Your Holy Spirit.” He changes them by the Holy Spirit. This is the most sacred, fundamental, and central moment. So here too, in marriage, we reach its central moment: “Join them”—bind them together.
Until now they were two people. Now join them, bind them together, unite them, and make them one flesh, so that they are no longer two people, but one person, one heart, and one soul. The Mystery is found chiefly here, in this joining. The priest is the instrument. Just as the priest blesses the Holy Gifts while God performs the Mystery—the Holy Spirit, who presides over the sacred rite, is the One who accomplishes it—so here too the priest’s hand serves as an instrument of the Holy Spirit, that these two people may be united. A sixteenth-century manuscript, number 850 in the collection of our National Library,
gives the following rubric for marriage: “And the priest, coming forth...” From where does he come forth? From the Holy Doors. Why? Because, as we have said ten times already, the marriage was celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. “And the priest, coming forth, joins their right hands.” He joins and unites their right hands and says to the man, “Receive her from the temple of the Lord.” Receive your wife from the temple of God. Another manuscript from the same library, number 877 from the fifteenth century, says the following. I shall read it to you. It is very interesting, and I ask you to pay close attention to this point: “Then the priest takes the woman’s right hand, places it in the man’s hand, and says as follows.”
He places the woman’s hand in the man’s hand and says to him: “Take heed, brother, for you receive this woman from the temple of the Lord.” Brother, take heed: you are receiving your wife from
the temple of God...
“For angels are invisibly present and bear witness with you to this joining.” Angels stand there invisibly as witnesses, watching what you do, and they bear witness to the joining. The word used here means the act of joining. We must not forget that this is the altered language of the fifteenth century, as the period of Ottoman rule was beginning, and so forth.
“You will give an account for her on the Day of Judgment.” How fearful! You receive her from the temple of God in the presence of witnesses—not only the Church gathered there, but also the angels. And you will give an account for your wife when God calls you to account on the Day of Judgment.
Pay close attention! Then he says to the woman: “Take heed, my daughter; see how you receive this man before Christ and the Theotokos.” Look carefully, my daughter, at how you receive this man before Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos. Take heed: you are receiving your husband before the icon of Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos. This means the same as the preceding words: you receive him from the temple of God. The wording changes, but the meaning is the same.
“Angels above and people below bear witness to the act of marriage. Submit to him in all fear of God, for you will give an account to God on his behalf.” Did you hear that? You will give an account to God on his behalf. That is, why did God make you, O woman? To help your husband. And in what are you to help him? In his salvation. If you become an obstacle to him, if you as his wife do not help him toward salvation, you will give an account on the Day of Judgment. A contemporary theologian says: What a fearful thing it is for the eternal and infinite God
to place one of His creatures into our hands—a woman into the hands of a man, and a man into the hands of a woman—a creature whom we must, without fail, guide toward salvation. It is an unbearable burden.
An unbearable burden—but let us consider what will make that burden very light. It is simply a love rooted in the love of Jesus Christ. When the love of husband and wife is rooted in that love, the love of Jesus Christ, then this burden becomes light, and their feet become swift in pursuing the purpose for which these two people exist.
And we learn something else from this point.
You receive your wife from the church, he says; you receive your husband before Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos. Here we are given a hint. Where will you find your husband, O woman? Where will you find your wife, O man? Where? In places where God is absent? And which are those places where God is absent? At dances? Is that where you will meet your wife? At parties, on the streets, amid sin? Or will it be in a place where God is present?
This hint, then, is useful to us. We will not find the other person far from God. We will find that person where God is. And, as we said in an earlier talk, through our prayer we will find the other person in Christ Jesus. In other words, our paths will meet somewhere—but where God wills. Do you see what the third prayer teaches us?
Bless. Bless, preserve, and remember. These three—the blessing, the preservation, and the remembrance—form the wall that will guard and protect the spouses and lead them forward in virtue.
As we bring tonight’s subject to a close, we should say something about the criteria for marriage. That is, when someone sets out to marry, what criteria should he use in choosing a spouse? The gentlemen listening to me who are already married will find this very useful for their children—not for themselves. We have already spoken about them. If they used poor criteria, let them repent. Let them repent in Holy Confession, but let them take care concerning their children, so that the harm is not passed on but comes to an end. Let us not pass on to our children the mistake that occurred in our own lives, but let us...
take care to change the quality of things. So, what are the criteria? Most people use wealth as their criterion. What will he receive? What will you receive? What does he own? What does the bride own? What does the groom do? Does he have property? Others use beauty as their criterion. The young woman is beautiful. She is wonderful, very beautiful. What do people usually do? When the guests come to the wedding, they stare at the bride. They hear nothing of the sacred words of the marriage service; they simply stare at the bride to see whether she is beautiful and beautifully dressed. What a calamity! What a calamity! See what we have reduced marriage to, what we have reduced the sacred place to: scrutinizing the newlyweds to see whether they are attractive, instead of...
as we said, praying that God will establish them firmly. Others pay attention to a good name. But what kind of good name? Not what the Apostle Paul means when he says, “Whatever is of good report, think on these things and practice them,” but a good name according to the world. The young woman looks to see whether the groom has a reputation, whether he is well established in society, whether he has a name, prestige, and so forth. What do you think? Are these valid criteria? Are these Christian criteria? The tragedy is that Christians who attend Church and go to Holy Confession often use these very criteria. It is tragic. It is a sign not only of ignorance but also of unbelief. That is where it leads.
My beloved, the first criterion is godliness: the godliness of both, of the two of them—not merely one, but both. I say both because if one is devout and the other is not, and the devout person marries the one who is not with the intention of making that person devout, I would say that this is a very great risk. It is a salto mortale—a leap to one’s death. Are you certain that the other person will indeed become devout? And what if they do not? What is marriage, an experimental laboratory? You might even say, “It does not matter if the other person is not especially devout.” But what is marriage, a repair shop for patching things up?
Is it a matter of covering things over and patching them up? Shall we simply conceal everything, cover it over, and mend it somehow? None of that will do, my beloved. Both must be devout—tried and proven in their godliness. Certainly, yes. Why? Because the path is narrow. Christ said, “Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way.” Christ said this about those who walk the narrow way one by one. Yet the narrow way becomes twice as narrow when two people walk it together. Therefore, both spouses will have to resolve many problems within marriage—first and foremost, problems of faith. Suppose the husband’s finances are not going well.
The wife may lose her composure because her husband has been dismissed from his job. She may become overwhelmed. “What are we going to do now? Alas, what will we do? How will we live?” She will then fill her husband with fear, and what will happen afterward? The consequences are unpredictable. Many people end up in psychiatric clinics. This is where faith is needed. The wife should say to her husband—assuming he too believes, though perhaps he has become a little fainthearted—“Do not be afraid. Do you believe in the providence of God? God will not forsake us. Would God forsake us? Did God not bless our marriage? And now, as we continue on our way and encounter this difficulty, will God abandon us? Whom has God ever forsaken? What devout person has God ever forsaken? He is our Father.” And when their eyes and hearts are lifted toward heaven...
they recite, “Our Father”—“Our Father,” our own Father. Those tender words, “our Father,” will draw down God’s loving-kindness, His compassion, His provision, and His help. So, there must be faith in the providence of God. An illness may come, perhaps lasting for months or even years. What is needed then? Love is needed. Husband, do you have the strength to wash the dishes, sweep the house, and care for your children because your wife is confined to bed?
And what if she does not recover? You do not add to her sorrow. You tell her, “Do not be distressed; I am here.” What else matters to you? You are able to love her. Look, the Fathers of our Church tell us, look how...
Christ did not abandon His wife, His bride, the Church. He did not abandon her. He went so far—so far as the martyrdom of the Cross. But what will inspire this spirit of love within you? Godliness. Yet the hour is passing; indeed, the time has passed. What can I say? The treasury of godliness, I would say, is inexhaustible. It never runs dry. So many qualities spring from it, and these are precisely what the couple needs along its journey. Godliness, then, is the first element, the first criterion. My dear friend, if you wish to marry off your daughter or your son, you must ask whether the prospective spouse is a devout person.
Let me dispel a misconception. Many people say, “He goes to church.” No, no—that is not godliness. No, it is not. It is assumed to be godliness, but it is not. Ah, what a blessing it would be if everyone who went to church were also devout! No! Does this person receive Holy Communion, go to Holy Confession, and pray? Has Christ been formed in this person’s life? The Apostle Paul says, “My little children, I suffer the pains of a woman in childbirth until Christ is born and formed in us”—that is, until Christ is formed within you and among you. Has Christ been formed in the soul of this young man and this young woman? Does this person live Christ?
Does this person merely attend Church, or truly live Christ? You will tell me, of course, that I am asking for a great deal. Where can we find such things today? I gave an explanation in our very first talk: I am speaking about Christian marriage. This is what Christian marriage is. The second point, the second criterion, equally fundamental, is compatibility of character—compatibility of character. In other words, these two people must be suited to one another. We may have two devout people who, how shall we put it...
simply do not suit one another. I have known devout friends—or rather, acquaintances—devout people whom I knew from childhood and adolescence. I knew devout young people. But could I have enjoyed close companionship with every one of them? Each person is suited to a particular kind of character. That is simply how things are. God made us as different kinds of people, each one distinct. Saint John the Evangelist had one kind of character, the Holy Apostle Peter another, and the Apostle Thomas yet another, and so forth.
So, what should be done here? We must pay attention to this point as well. I gave the ladies an example, and I will give it to you too. Once, a cousin from my village sent me a letter saying, “Please buy me a radio.” This put me in a difficult position, because a radio is not simply a cooking pot. It is a machine with particular specifications. I wrote back that there were many kinds of radios, with many different features and levels of performance. One was like this, another like that. He wrote back again.
“Whichever one you think is best.” That presented a second difficulty. I wrote to him, “What kind of casing do you want?” For many people, the appearance of the casing matters. Does he want walnut, plastic, or something else? He replied, “Whatever you like.” But this “whatever you like,” my beloved, is precisely the difficulty. I may like something, but does it necessarily follow that you will like it too? Liking is entirely subjective and personal. If you ask me why I like beans, I will tell you, “Because I like them.” There is no further reason. I simply like them. And if I tell you that I do not like potatoes, I will say, “I do not like potatoes.” There is no reason to give. In such personal matters, there is no place for a third party. When it comes to personal preference, no third party can intervene, however you may put it.
As the French say, there is no argument about taste. That settles it. If a person likes or dislikes someone, there is no “why.” What does this mean, then? It means that if someone introduces a young woman to a young man and it becomes clear that the two are not suited to each other and do not like each other, then please do not insist. Must he marry her at all costs? Wait a moment. Will you, the person insisting, be the one getting married? No, the other person will. So let us not insist. Nor, please, is marriage something made to order. We do not have one box with a groom inside and another box with a bride inside, take their measurements at the market, open the boxes, match them up, and marry them. It seems to me that this is also a matter of character, way of life, manner, and so forth. Therefore, we must pay equal attention to this point. If there is compatibility of character but no godliness...
then something essential is greatly lacking. And if there is godliness but no compatibility of character, something essential is likewise greatly lacking. Two people without godliness may live pleasantly and peacefully in their home and never grow cold toward each other, yet their hearts will never be touched by agape, which is the first and fundamental purpose of marriage. That is all concerning the criteria for marriage. Since, however, our subject has grown and we ourselves have prolonged it, next time—God willing, next Tuesday—we will continue, and it will be our final talk on this subject.

Παρακάτω θα δούμε, εκεί στην τελευταία ευχή της ακολουθίας, να λέγει ένα σημείο το εξής ο ιερεύς. Την ώρα που θα βγάζει τα στέφανα από τους νεονύμφους, θα λέγει: «Ανάλαβε τους στεφάνους αυτών εν τη βασιλεία σου». Ανάλαβε. Ένας κώδιξ λέγει ότι τα στέφανα αυτά τα παίρνει ο ιερεύς και τα βάζει μέσα στο ιερό. Και εκεί τα αφήνει να λειτουργηθούν και λέγει: «Εις δόξαν Θεού». Αυτό το «ανάλαβε» θα πει πάρε. Πάρε, λέει, ανάλαβε τους στεφάνους αυτών, τα στέφανά τους, στη Βασιλεία. Σας ερωτώ: δεν νομίζετε ότι προϋποτίθεται ότι μαζί με τα στεφάνια πρέπει να φύγουν και τα κεφάλια; Διότι τα στεφάνια μόνα τους τι να κάνουν στη Βασιλεία του Θεού;
Από το ναό, λέει, παίρνεις τη γυναίκα σου, μπροστά από το Χριστό και την Παναγία παίρνεις τον άνδρα σου. Εδώ ένας υπαινιγμός μάς δίνεται. Πού θα βρεις τον άνδρα σου, ω γυναίκα; Πού θα βρεις τη γυναίκα σου, ω άνδρα; Πού; Στους τόπους εκείνους που απουσιάζει ο Θεός; Και ποιοι είναι οι τόποι εκείνοι που απουσιάζει ο Θεός; Οι χοροί; Εκεί θα γνωρίσεις τη γυναίκα σου; Τα πάρτι, το πεζοδρόμιον, η αμαρτία; Ή θα είναι ο τόπος εκείνος που ο Θεός είναι παρών;
Εδώ λοιπόν ο υπαινιγμός αυτός μάς είναι χρήσιμος. Δε θα βρούμε τον άλλον άνθρωπο μακριά από το Θεό. Θα τον βρούμε εκεί που ο Θεός βρίσκεται. Και ακόμη, όπως λέγαμε σε ένα περασμένο μας θέμα, με την προσευχή μας θα τον βρούμε εν Χριστώ Ιησού τον άλλον άνθρωπο. Δηλαδή, οι πορείες μας κάπου θα συναντηθούν. Εκεί όμως που ο Θεός θέλει. Είδατε η τρίτη ευχή;
Αγαπητοί μου, το πρώτο κριτήριο είναι η ευσέβεια. Η ευσέβεια αμφοτέρων, και των δυο, όχι του ενός, και των δύο. Είπα και των δύο, διότι αν υποτεθεί ότι ο ένας είναι ευσεβής και ο άλλος δεν είναι, και ο ευσεβής παίρνει τον μη ευσεβή με σκοπό να τον κάνει ευσεβή, θα έλεγα ότι κάτι πολύ διακινδυνεύει. Ένα σάλτους μορτάλε κάνει, ένα πήδημα θανάτου κάνει. Είσαι σίγουρος ότι οπωσδήποτε ο άλλος θα γίνει ευσεβής; Και αν δεν γίνει; Και τι είναι ο γάμος, πειραματικό εργαστήριο; Και αν ακόμη θα έλεγες, ε, δεν πειράζει και αν δεν είναι και πολύ ευσεβής, τι είναι ο γάμος, μπαλωματίδικο;
Να βγω από μια πλάνη, να βγάλω μια πλάνη. Πολλοί λένε: «Πάει στην εκκλησία». Όχι, όχι, αυτό δεν είναι ευσέβεια. Όχι, όχι. Υποτίθεται ότι είναι ευσέβεια, αλλά δεν είναι ευσέβεια. Α, θα ήταν ευτύχημα αν όσοι πήγαιναν στην εκκλησία ήσαν και ευσεβείς άνθρωποι. Όχι! Κοινωνεί, εξομολογείται, προσεύχεται; Μορφώθηκε ο Χριστός στη ζωή του; Την οποία λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος ότι «τεκνία», παιδάκια, «ωδίνω», πονώ τους πόνους της επιτόκου γυναικός, «άχρις ου γεννηθεί, μορφωθεί Χριστός εν ημίν», έως ότου, λέγει, διαμορφωθεί ο Χριστός μέσα σας, ανάμεσά σας. Μορφώθηκε ο Χριστός μέσα στην ψυχή αυτού του νέου και αυτής της νέας; Ζει Χριστόν;
