Summary
Orthodox marriage is presented as a God-given beginning of salvation and theosis, joining husband and wife in a new life oriented toward the Kingdom of God. Adultery introduces a third person into the one-flesh union, betrays the love at marriage’s core, and destroys the communion God established. The wedding prayers also bless the couple with children and grandchildren as co-workers in God’s creative work, while contraception and especially abortion are condemned as rejections of that vocation.

This is our final topic concerning marriage. It is true that the discussion has gone on at some length, but at least one benefit will have come from that length: you will have understood that this is a serious—an exceedingly serious—subject, one so fundamental to our lives. We might say that marriage is a milestone: a milestone of such importance in our earthly life, but also, why not, a milestone on the way to the Kingdom of God. For this very reason God created woman: so that the purpose of Adam, the purpose of the human person—which is theosis—might be fulfilled, and so that man might be helped in bringing it to fulfilment.
Marriage, then, is not merely a milestone in our lives; it is also a starting point for salvation and eternal life. You understand that if this starting point becomes the beginning of calamities, the beginning of many evils, then woe to us. So, even from the length of our discussion, you will have realised that this is an exceedingly serious and fundamental subject. The presence of the young people shows how much interest you have taken in it. Nevertheless, we do not wish to weary you any further, and with God’s help, today our discussion of marriage comes to an end.
There remain, however, a few passages from the wedding service that complete the overall picture. In the first prayer after the readings—and by “the readings” we mean the Gospel and the Apostle—we read: “O Lord our God, make their marriage honorable; preserve their marriage bed undefiled; be pleased to keep their life together blameless; and count them worthy to reach a ripe old age, fulfilling Your commandments with a pure heart.” The Church comes before the Lord and prays: O Lord, preserve the marriage of these newlyweds throughout the whole course of their lives.
Keep it honorable. Keep their bridal chamber, their marriage bed, undefiled and free from every stain of sin. Be pleased also to keep their life together spotless, without blemish. You see three points—or rather, three expressions for the same thing: an honorable marriage, an undefiled marriage bed, and a blameless life together. And not only this. The prayer adds the same thought in a positive way: grant them a rich old age, “a ripe old age.” Ripe, full, abundant—that is, a deeply advanced old age.
May they reach a deeply advanced old age, but with a pure heart—the heart from which, according to the words of the Lord, come fornication, adultery, impurity, and the rest. This new creation called marriage, this union of husband and wife, truly is a new creation. It is a new being formed from two persons. You understand that this being, which is “one flesh,” is very tender and very fragile, like everything newly born. All newborn things are always fragile and always in danger. And so the prayer now comes before the Lord.
The Church prays to the Lord for the preservation of this couple. For the place in which the couple now lives is not the realm of Paradise; it is not Eden, not Paradise, not the Kingdom of God. It is the place of exile. It is the place of temptations and, therefore, of great snares and dangers. We beseech You, O Lord: guard this new creation, this one flesh. Guard it above all where it is so easily attacked—against immorality. Preserve the chastity of this new being.
The subtle meaning of chastity pervades all the prayers of the wedding service, but it is expressed in such a sensitive, delicate, and gentle way. Nowhere do we find the word “fornication”; nowhere do we find the word “adultery.” Instead, we always hear: O Lord, keep their marriage honorable; O Lord, keep their life undefiled; O Lord, keep their way of life blameless; O Lord, keep their hearts pure. All these are different expressions for one and the same concern: that marital chastity may be preserved. This is the foremost challenge within marriage.
Another manuscript in our National Library, Codex 2724, states this plainly: “As Adam knew Eve alone, so may Your servants turn their desires toward one another and have union with one another.” Adam, it says, knew one woman. Pay attention, please: he knew one woman. In the same way, it says, may Your servants have toward one another—listen carefully—the turning, that is, the inclination and direction, of their desires; and thirdly, their bodily union. Desire, inclination, union. The two of them, only the two of them, only the two. In other words, the two becoming one flesh.
Let nothing foreign enter, nothing abominable, nothing that would stain the spotless purity of marriage. The Apostle Paul tells us this without qualification in his Epistle to the Hebrews: “Marriage is honorable in all, and the marriage bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Allow me to pause here for a moment; the thought has just occurred to me—I had not considered it before. “Marriage is honorable.” Marriage, he says, is honorable in every respect. Yet there are people who do not regard marriage as honorable. The heretics did not regard it as honorable.
In the time of the Apostle Paul, such a movement was just beginning. Certain heretics called Gnostics had only recently appeared. Even in our own time there are Christians who do not regard marriage as honorable. Someone says, “I will not be saved.” I believe I have told you this before. A woman once said to me, “How fortunate you are! You will be saved.” Why? “Because we who are married…” Why should you who are married not enter the Kingdom of God? Is marriage not from God? Is marriage fundamentally a defilement? God forbid! Let us not slander marriage; let us not blaspheme God. For this is blasphemy—blasphemy against God. Marriage, my beloved, is not defilement. It is not sin. Many people imagine that whatever takes place in marital union is defilement. Defilement is whatever is done contrary to what God wills.
Only what God does not will is defilement. Only that, and nothing else. Everything else is not defilement; on the contrary, it belongs within God’s plan. Any other view of marriage is heretical and lies outside the bounds of Christianity. Such a view arises because inwardly we have not yet given the flesh, the body, its proper value. For we were born fleshly, extending even into the spirit. Pay very close attention to this. “Marriage,” then, “is honorable in all.” But the Apostle also says, “and the marriage bed undefiled.” What God does not will—that is what is abominable. The marriage bed must remain undefiled and pure. This is why he speaks of “fornicators and adulterers.”
We spoke at an earlier gathering about relations before marriage, while relations after marriage include adultery. God “will judge”—that is, He will condemn—such things. Why, my brother, do you abandon your wife? Why, madam, do you abandon your husband? Why? What are you seeking? What more do you want? Why do you become a carnal person? Why? Marriage was given precisely for this purpose as well: to extinguish the flame of passion and secure chastity, as we said when discussing the second purpose of marriage. Yet now you fan the flame still higher. You cast chastity aside. And what then? Will this bring you happiness? Will it give you joy?
It is a delusion. Adultery introduces a third person. Whether that person is a man or a woman, this third person becomes a wedge—a wedge driven into the trunk called the marital union, the one flesh—and splits apart the very trunk that God made one. For this reason, adultery is a grave sin: it divides what God has joined together. Adultery strikes at the very heart of the union.
It strikes at the very essence of marriage, which is love. For a third person to enter your marriage means that you have betrayed your love. Do you swear to me that you have not betrayed it? You are lying. Perhaps you say that you provide your wife with everything she wants and that she lacks nothing. Material provision is not proof of love. Or perhaps you say that you feel sorry for your husband; although your eyes wander elsewhere, you still pity him. Marriage is not charity. It is love to the very marrow. So, for this simple reason alone, if you turn your eyes toward other persons outside your marriage, know this: you are betraying love.
Once Socrates went to visit a friend who was a painter. The painter had a naked woman as his model and was painting her—a courtesan, a naked woman. Socrates entered his friend’s studio, and she tried to entice him. Socrates replied—and please remember, this was four centuries before Christ; Socrates had known neither Christian teaching nor the Old Testament—when she enticed him, he answered: “I would gladly come to you, if someone better than you were not waiting for me at home.” Xenophon preserves this account for us in his Memorabilia. The woman who is better than she is your wife, and the man who is better than any other is your husband.
Your own husband. Take care—God preserve you—take great care.
But what will lead husband and wife to salvation—I want to emphasise this once again—is not simply salvation, not merely the desire for salvation, but the experience of love. If you wish to see your wife saved, you will accomplish this only if you love her; and the wife must do the same for her husband. We must never say, “I love you in order to save you.” No. We must say, “I lead you toward salvation because I love you.” God did not come to save us so that love might then arise from salvation. He loved us, and therefore He saved us. “For God so loved the world.” That word “so” is fathomless and immeasurable. God loved the world so greatly—do you see?
Then comes the word “that,” which is secondary: “that He sent His Son into the world” to save us. Salvation, therefore, is secondary; it is the result. The driving force, the motive, is love. Once love has ceased within a marriage, salvation has gone out the window; the purpose of marriage has been shipwrecked. Allow me here to say something very important. We clergy, at least, often suffer greatly over this matter when adultery occurs. Because adultery attacks love itself, the marriage—whose foundation is love—appears to have no further reason to continue. For this reason Christ granted grounds for divorce. He said:
Divorce is permitted “except for sexual immorality,” meaning adultery. Consequently, many people think that since Christ has somehow given them the right—since Christ tells them, though it is not quite right to say that He tells them—to obtain a divorce, and since wounded pride is also involved, especially in the man, they proceed with the divorce and are not prepared to forgive if a fall has occurred. First, Christ does not give a commandment; He grants a right. In the same way, the Apostle Paul had the right to receive his livelihood from the Church without working. But when I am granted a right, I may choose whether or not to exercise it. With a commandment, however, I do not have the right to choose whether or not to obey. That settles the matter.
I must do what is commanded, and that is the end of it. But when rights are granted to me, I am also free either to exercise them or not. This is why the Apostle Paul did not exercise the right given by the Lord not to work; instead, he worked. Why? Because this formed part of his entire spiritual purpose—the blessed Saint Paul, that great soul, that soul reaching to heaven, as John Chrysostom calls him. Do you also wish to become a soul reaching to heaven? Do you wish to be blessed? I would pray that such a tragedy never befall your marriage. But if it does, forgive. Learn to forgive: you, the wife, forgive your husband; and you, the husband, forgive your wife. Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain, in his interpretation of a Canon concerning this matter, says:
On the subject of divorce, Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says this: the civil authorities may indeed give you the right to obtain a divorce—but it is only a right. Strive to forgive. You who have been wronged, strive to forgive when the other spouse who offended you asks for repentance and forgiveness. Sadly, many regard this as an injury to their pride, as something demeaning. My dear friends, only pride could speak in such a way. True holiness, however, directs you to forgive. Can you not bear what society will say? Make a sacrifice. Move to another village, move to another city.
What else can be done? How else can it be? But know this: if you have learned to forgive, that is the fruit of holiness. We have seen, then, that the absence of love often leads to divorce. And divorce is the most dreadful form of dissolution, both of marriage and of society. Woe to a society in which divorces are multiplying! In Athens alone, every Monday—the day specially appointed by the Court of First Instance for divorce hearings—one hundred and fifty, forgive me, one hundred to one hundred and fifty divorce petitions are filed.
Every week in Athens—in Athens alone, not including Piraeus—we have four hundred to six hundred divorce petitions. In Athens alone. I have said it three times. What does this mean? It means that every week four hundred to six hundred homes are blown apart. They are destroyed.
There may seem to be many causes. But I would tell you that, in reality, there is only one cause: the lack of love, the absence of love. Why? Let us see. They say, “Because of incompatibility of character.” That is the fashionable justification. It began in America and reached Greece. What does compatibility of character mean? Do you know what it really means? It means that you cannot put up with the other person. And do you know what that means? You do not love. Because if you love, you will bear with them. When your child cries, you put up with it. If you did not, you would throw the child out of the window. Would you throw your child out of the window? You do not, because you bear with your child; and you bear with your child because you love your child. Why, then, can you not bear with your wife, with your own spouse? He snores—ah...
Or there is something else you cannot bear. Are such things grounds for dissolving a marriage? God forbid! God forbid! Perhaps your spouse has become paralysed or contracted leprosy—for which the civil authorities grant the other spouse a divorce. Christ did not say this. Your spouse may be in a leper colony, but Christ has told you that your spouse is not dead, and therefore you must wait. Will your spouse never recover? That does not matter. You are bound to your husband, and your husband is alive. Because you are ill, would you want him to cast you aside? If you were in a leper colony or a sanatorium, would you want to learn that your husband had taken action, obtained a divorce, and married another woman? Oh, how terrible! Would you want that? Then, please, no. For no one and for no reason is there any...
Room for divorce. For no reason at all. Whatever you may say, the cause is the one I have already given you: the absence of love. Marriage is, in reality, an ontological reality. What does an ontological union or reality mean? It means that the union of two people is not merely moral, symbolic, or mechanical. It is ontological: it concerns their very being. Shall I go further? It is not a chemical union; it is ontological. It is not like taking sulphur and iron and making iron sulphide, producing a chemical compound. Nor is it like mixing water and sugar to make syrup, producing a mechanical mixture. Marriage is an ontological union. Ontological means...
It is like the relationship of my finger to my palm, my palm to my wrist, my wrist to my arm, and my arm to my body—all nourished by the same blood. That is marriage. This is why marriage is indissoluble. The words “one flesh” express precisely this. The Apostle puts it beautifully. He speaks of the woman, though the same applies to the man: “A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives.” The woman, he says, is bound by the law of God. “And the two shall become one flesh.” As long as her husband lives—even if he is at the North Pole, wherever he may be, in a sanatorium, in a leper colony, anywhere at all—she is bound to her husband. “But if her husband falls asleep,” that is, if he dies, “she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.”
You are free to marry whomever you wish, but not however you wish: it must be “in the Lord.” It must not be a marriage entered into for sin, but one in the Lord, according to the will of the Lord. John Chrysostom makes a subtle observation. God forbid, he says, that I should call a second marriage living fornication. God forbid! No, John Chrysostom says, I do not say that. But notice carefully: the Apostle says, “If her husband falls asleep.” To fall asleep means to die. Yet one who sleeps will awaken. Your husband is, of course, on the other side, on the farther shore of life, there in the Kingdom of God, waiting for you. So do not become entangled in other marriages.
Remain faithful to your first marriage. Only if you cannot endure it should you proceed to a second. But do not proceed if you can remain as you are. This is why the Apostle Paul also says, “But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my judgment.” The widowed woman is happier, that is, if she remains unmarried—“according to my judgment,” says the Apostle Paul. Even among birds, we often see doves living in monogamy: when one is lost, the other remains alone and dies that way. If even animals behave so, how much more should human beings? Do not speak to me of civil laws. Do not speak to me of fourth marriages or automatic divorces. Listen again, please, to the voice of John Chrysostom.
Do not cite to me the civil laws that permit this after a divorce has been issued. On the day of Judgment, God will not judge you according to civil law, but according to the laws He Himself established. He will not ask what the state in which you lived permitted at the time; He will judge you according to the law He ordained. And one final point on divorce: what can we say about those who contribute, in one way or another, to other people obtaining a divorce? Who might they be? A father-in-law, a mother-in-law, a mother, a father, a friend, a group of friends, an uncle, or an aunt...
Those who contribute to a divorce say, “Leave him and come home, my poor girl.” A young man told me this—and I hope he is not in my audience tonight. He was young and had married a young woman, and he overheard her mother saying to her daughter, “Leave him and come home, my poor girl. He is a good-for-nothing.” The young man is not a good-for-nothing; perhaps he simply has not yet established himself in a profession, because he is still young. Madam, when you married off your daughter, did you not see whom she was marrying? And now he is suddenly a good-for-nothing? Is it because someone else has appeared who has money? God forbid! My dear friends, understand this clearly: even if your daughter is being beaten or suffering in some other way, you do not have the right to tell her to leave. Nor do we spiritual fathers have the right to say, “My child, separate from him.” Never!
If she or he wants to separate, that is their choice; but we must never contribute to the separation of a married couple. Mothers in particular must take great care here, for women can play a very harmful role in such matters. God forbid! Great care is needed on this point.
They sin before the Lord Himself, who said, “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” Christ said this—not the Old Testament—and it is heard repeatedly in the marriage service as a reminder to everyone present: “You who are here now, witnessing...
This union of this newly married couple, take heed—parents, relatives, friends, and acquaintances. Never contribute, directly or indirectly, to the couple’s separation, because the law of God forbids it, and you will answer to God for every action you take.” In the second prayer before the readings, we read the following:
“Grant them the fruit of the womb, fair and healthy children, and may they see their children’s children.” How beautifully this is expressed! How realistic Christianity is! My dear friends, it leaves no aspect of life untouched. It is not forever saying, “Do not speak of that; it is sinful. Do not mention this; it is sinful.” That would remind us of the heretics’ words: “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle.” Do not touch this—it is a sin; do not do that—it is a sin. Here the Church prays for the fruit of the womb, that the couple may have children. And not merely children: she also prays for fair and healthy offspring—that is, well-formed, strong, healthy, and beautiful children.
“May this couple, O Lord,” says the priest, “see their children’s children.” In other words, may you become grandparents and see grandchildren—and some especially blessed people even see great-grandchildren. This was considered a very great blessing in the Old Testament. Indeed, through the biological union of man and woman, we see God the Creator revealing Himself within history. We see God continuing His creative work through time. What a marvellous thing! Husband and wife become co-workers with God. Adam also says, when he sees his first child, Cain—in the Old Testament; please read Holy Scripture, it is a treasure, I beg you to read it—Adam says there...
When he saw his first child, he said, “I have acquired a man in my own image from God.” In other words, “I have received a creature who resembles me,” Adam said. “Yet I marvel at how this child came to be—it is a mystery! God has done this.” What, then, is Adam confessing here? He is confessing about himself that he has God as his co-worker—or, better, that God has Adam as His co-worker. Parents, therefore, are co-creators with God; they are God’s fellow workers. This is also the supernatural aspect of marriage. These children will...
They will fill the Kingdom of God; they will fill the Kingdom of God with saints. Do not find this strange. The twenty-fifth child of a family in Italy, a girl named Catherine, became a saint—Saint Catherine of... I cannot remember; I admit that I cannot remember. She was the twenty-fifth child in the family. Could that family have imagined that their twenty-fifth child would become a saint and enter the Kingdom of God? The children of Basil, the father of Basil the Great, were holy children. Our Church officially commemorates three of them. What a great thing! Three children from the same family officially numbered among the saints: Basil the Great, his brother Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and Saint Macrina. What a great thing! Yet while our Church prays for the fruit of the womb...
For well-formed and healthy children, for children who will enter the Kingdom of God, and that the spouses may see grandchildren, how do married couples respond to this most beautiful reality expressed in the Church’s prayers? The majority respond in two ways, with two answers. The first answer is the prevention of conception. The second is abortion. These are the answers given by spouses who only a short while before received crowns upon their heads. How terrible!
Nevertheless, I will not dwell on these matters. I will not dwell especially on the first; I have merely mentioned it. I will speak briefly about the second, by reading from an encyclical that was already read in our churches in September and October. It is a pastoral encyclical of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, and it addresses precisely this subject. Allow me to read an excerpt.
“One of the chief causes of the low birth rate is the epidemic of illegal abortions, usually performed by Greek doctors or midwives, even though this is contrary to the teaching of religion, the laws of the state, and the physician’s Hippocratic Oath.” Hippocrates lived in the sixth century before Christ, if I remember correctly, and he was not a Christian. He was not a Christian. Yet, my dear friends, he states this explicitly. Once, when I read his oath, I was astonished. If you removed the name “Hippocrates” and translated the text, you would say that the oath had been written by a Christian physician, indeed, by a Christian physician of the early centuries. At one point it says: “Take care not to give medicine to a pregnant woman and destroy the child in her womb.” What a beautiful thing!
“Today’s physicians, however, violate”—not all of them, Glory to God, not all; fortunately, because woe to us if they all did—“the Hippocratic Oath and the moral principles governing both the individual and society. Very many married couples in our country have been swept along by this epidemic wave of criminal abortions and commit the crime of destroying the fruit of their own womb. More than one hundred thousand unborn children, tender young shoots still in the womb, are killed every year in our country, as the statistics testify.” One hundred thousand abortions a year. Indeed. That is like half the population of Larissa going down into Hades. “This sinful and criminal act not only threatens the survival of the Greek nation, but strikes chiefly and decisively at...”
“...the very hearth of the family, which is the living cell in the body of the nation. Many millions of drachmas, which could have been used to improve family life, are spent and seized by the doctors who perform abortions. Moreover, abortions create”—pay attention to this—“incurable wounds in the soul and oppressive complexes of guilt in the consciences of countless parents and of the physicians treating them. They create pangs of conscience, a withering of the heart, sorrow and anguish in the soul, and a heavy, crushing guilt, because through them a life is taken without any right to do so and in violation of every divine and human law. In this way, peace and joy vanish from the family and from the home in which hover the shadows of those human beings...”
“...the unborn children sacrificed to the Moloch of certain people’s selfishness. The blood of these murdered creatures of God cries aloud before the throne of God and troubles and torments the souls of the parents who killed their own children and of the physicians who violated divine and human laws.” “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground; and now you are cursed from the earth, groaning and trembling,” God said to Cain. Human blood cries out from the earth. You who committed the crime, He says to Cain, and killed your brother, will be accursed, groaning and trembling wherever you walk upon the earth.
But let us leave this distressing picture and return to the culmination of Holy Matrimony: the crowning. The crowning is truly the high point, we might say, of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. “The servant of God is crowned.” It crowns and confirms the will of God. What does this mean? It is the crowning and confirmation of the marriage mentioned in the preceding prayer, when the priest joined the hands of the newlyweds. There, he fitted together and united their hands; now he comes to crown that union.
He comes to confirm and proclaim that this union has now been accomplished. And who confirms this crowning and ratification? “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned to the handmaid of God, so-and-so, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” It is the Holy Trinity who crowns, confirms, joins, and establishes them. From Codex 724 of the National Library, I read the following: “The Father blesses, the Son crowns, and the Holy Spirit gives His consent.” How beautiful! The Father blesses, the Son crowns, and the Holy Spirit agrees and assists. This reminds us of that Trinitarian...
Forgive me, of the work of the Holy Trinity in creation. The Father wills the world to come into being; the Son is the builder who creates the world, and, as John the Evangelist tells us, “Without Him nothing was made that was made.” Nothing came into being without the Word, Jesus Christ. “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established.” Who is this Word of the Lord? He is the Son. And the Holy Spirit also works together with Him. At creation we find the Holy Spirit hovering over the material creation: “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” He was hovering above them. The image of a dove in flight gives us a beautiful picture of what “hovering” means. And just as a mother hen...
We have, then, the image of a bird: a mother hen broods over her eggs so that new living creatures may emerge. In the same way, speaking in human terms, the Holy Spirit broods over creation so that life may come forth from it—plants, animals, and humanity. Here now, in Holy Matrimony, we have an invocation of the Holy Trinity. What does this mean? It does not now mean creation, but re-creation: a new creation and a new nature. This is not creation out of nothing. Rather, these people who have grown old in sin, these sinful human beings, now come into the hands of the Holy Trinity through the Mystery of Holy Matrimony, so that they may be made new. But there is something even more astonishing in Codex 968, from fifteenth-century Mount Sinai...
It concludes with an invocation to Jesus Christ: “For You are He who has crowned them, Christ our God, and to You we send up glory,” and so forth. For You Yourself are the crown. Christ is their crown, their wedding wreath. Here we encounter some remarkable relationships and images within the New Testament. Christ said, “I am the way.” A way is the means by which I go somewhere. Christ also said, “I am the life.” Life is the destination, while the way is how one reaches that life. In other words, Christ is both the means and the goal. So here Christ is both the One who crowns and the One who is Himself the crown. It is just as in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist: Christ is the One who offers the sacrifice, and Christ is also the sacrifice offered.
Christ offers the sacrifice, and Christ is sacrificed. Remember also the parable of the wedding feast, of those invited to the wedding, and the wedding garments. What are those garments? Saint Symeon the New Theologian says that the garment is Christ Himself. Why does the master of the feast cast out the guest who had no wedding garment? Because he had not put on Christ. You must have Christ upon you. This is what the Apostle Paul says: “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you.” Until, he says, the Lord is formed within you. The garment is Christ, and the crown is Christ; in other words, He is both the One who crowns and the One who is crowned. And as we say at Baptism, “As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” You have clothed yourselves with Christ. The newlyweds must see their crowns—that is, they must see the garments they are to put on...
...and Christ must be their crown.
The crowns also signify a great victory: the victory of the newlyweds in the great contest of chastity, as Saint John Chrysostom says. Codex 958, from fifteenth-century Mount Sinai, says: “Adorn them with the crown of chastity as the prize of virginity.” What, then, do the crowns signify as emblems of victory? What victory? That you, the husband, remained pure until your marriage. We often hear people say, “Well, he is a man.” What do you mean, “He is a man,” my brother? Do you mean that precisely because you are a man, you had to fall into immorality?
God forbid! See from this that the Church crowns those who are chaste and wants you to be chaste. And as for women, people say, “But these are the times we live in.” What times, my child? The Church wants to crown you as a virgin. How beautiful it is, then, when both newlyweds approach as virgins: the young man having known no other woman except the woman he is now taking as his wife, and the young woman having known no other man except the man she is now taking as her husband. How worthily they receive these crowns of victory, because the victory of chastity is no small thing. It is a great achievement, worthy of crowns. But if they have not remained chaste, at least let them have repented.
At least they will receive the crown in repentance, saying, “We did not understand; we were not strong enough; whatever the case, we repent.” Is this not why Holy Confession and Holy Communion take place before the wedding? So be it. But if even that does not happen, and they come to be crowned not only bearing the sins of immorality but boasting of their immorality, what a mockery that is! It is like an eighty-year-old man coming down from the stands into the stadium to receive the crown for having run a forty-two-kilometer marathon. The whole stadium would laugh. Does the stadium above laugh? No. The angels weep, while the demons laugh.
The priest says, “O Lord our God, crown them with glory and honor.” Crown them with glory and honor. These words echo, we might say, the paradisal majesty of humanity praised in the eighth Psalm and recalled in the Epistle to the Hebrews: “You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor.” The human person is the crown of creation, the summit of the visible creation, and God’s delight. In the Book of Proverbs, I believe in the eighth chapter—yes, I think it is the eighth chapter—and this appears even more clearly in a translation from the Hebrew, the personified Wisdom, Jesus Christ, says: “My joy...”
“My joy was to be among the children of men.” God looked upon the first man and delighted in him. But before long, humanity fell, and Christ had to come into the world. And now, when the human person saved in Christ Jesus reaches the shores of the Kingdom of God once again, he will not arrive empty-handed, but with gifts in his hands. The Apocalypse, which speaks of the end of the world, says that there “the nations shall bring their glory and honor.” Glory and honor stand at the beginning, at the sunrise and dawn of the human race. Glory and honor also stand at the end of history. Holy Matrimony, there in the middle, joins the Alpha and the Omega...
...the beginning and the end of the human journey, showing that the human person will be crowned once more. Now there remains the cup of blessing. “And as You offer this common cup to those joined in the communion of marriage, O Lord our God, bless it with a spiritual blessing.” This cup contains wine, undiluted wine, although no service book specifies whether it should be undiluted or mixed with water. It says nothing about that. Bless it, and grant that those who have now entered Holy Matrimony may partake of it and receive a spiritual blessing. What is this common cup? We call it common because it contains ordinary wine. It signifies that the newlyweds must share one common life.
From the same cup they will drink both the joys and the sorrows, my dear friends, which await them along their common road and their shared journey through life. Together they will drink the joys, and together they will drink the sorrows. Codex 966, from thirteenth-century Mount Sinai, tells us: “Then the priest gives them to drink three times and breaks the cup upon the ground.” He gives them the cup to drink, and afterward he takes it and breaks it on the floor. What does this show? It signifies the fragility of the couple’s life and happiness. Do not imagine that your life will be strewn with roses; difficult days will come as well. Know that human life and human happiness are very fragile and easily broken.
In earlier times, this common cup did not stand upon the table, because that table—I have said this five or six times already; in fact, I asked a young woman, and she told me, “You have mentioned this many times”—I repeat it because I want to emphasize it, my dear friends. The table before which the wedding now takes place outside the sanctuary was once the Holy Altar. And the cup of wine that now stands outside was once the Holy Chalice within, because Holy Matrimony was celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. We have said this many times; you remember. What does it mean? It means that the newlyweds were to receive Holy Communion immediately, right there. The same was true at Baptism. How many of you—I have mentioned this before—were present at the Baptism of that Muslim man who had fasted from the morning, had eaten absolutely nothing, and had likewise fasted the day before?
His Eminence gave him Holy Communion immediately after his Baptism. That is how it should be. He received Holy Communion. The newlyweds likewise should receive Holy Communion. Yet the rubrics from the twelfth through the sixteenth centuries state clearly: if they are worthy, they receive Holy Communion; otherwise, they drink from the common cup. And so today newlyweds no longer receive Holy Communion, and the cup of wine remains merely a common symbol. What a pity! For the starting point of Holy Matrimony is the Eucharistic cup, the cup of life, the Body and Blood of Christ. Finally comes the procession. After offering the common cup, the priest immediately takes the newlyweds and leads them three times in a circle. He takes them by the hand and leads them round and round.
What is this dance? It is rich in meaning. Before we explain it, let us look very briefly at these three troparia. “Rejoice, O Isaiah! The Virgin conceived in her womb and bore a Son, Emmanuel, both God and man. His name is Orient; magnifying Him, we call the Virgin blessed.” Rejoice, O Isaiah! What does that mean? Dance! What does the word tell us? Leap and exult for joy. But what place does Isaiah have here, and why should he leap for joy? Quite simply, because your prophecy that the Virgin would bear this God, Emmanuel—which means “God with us”—has been fulfilled in our days.
Yes, but what does this have to do with marriage? It has everything to do with it. Here is how, my dear friends. Human marriage was the type—as we shall see just below—of the marriage between God and creation, between Christ and the Church. Types continued to appear, as they did in the Old Testament, until the prototypes they foreshadowed came. So leap for joy, Isaiah, for you proclaimed the prototype: the marriage between God and the Church, between Christ and the Church, of which human marriage was the image. It has been fulfilled; Christ has come. This is what we now proclaim to Isaiah. Then comes: “O holy Martyrs, who fought the good fight and received your crowns, intercede with the Lord that He may have mercy on our souls.”
What place do the Martyrs have here? We said in an earlier talk that, in its deepest sense, marriage is martyrdom: each spouse must bear the other’s yoke. The crown here reflects not only glory, but martyrdom as well. And so, just as Christ became a martyr upon the Cross for His bride, the Church, and wore a crown of thorns, we also chant this troparion to the holy Martyrs. The third troparion is: “Glory to You, O Christ our God, the Apostles’ boast and the Martyrs’ joy, whose preaching was the consubstantial Trinity.” What, then, was the preaching of the Martyrs and the Apostles? What was it? “The consubstantial Trinity”—the Holy Trinity, our God.
This is what we said on an earlier occasion: everything, and therefore marriage as well, must begin with the Holy Trinity. Just as the Triune God is three Persons, one essence, one God, so it is here in marriage: two persons, one essence, one human being. And now the dance begins. They move around in a circle. This threefold procession is a threefold affirmation of the symbolism of the circle. The circle is a symbol of eternity, because when I draw a circle, I return to the same point again and again, without end. It is therefore a symbol of the infinite, of eternity. And so, for this reason, notice something else here. When we go out with the icons next Sunday, we shall carry the icons in procession.
Unfortunately, the procession takes place inside the church. I do not know why. Normally it should take place outside, around the church. At the consecration of a church, for example, we make a threefold procession around it. This threefold procession is a threefold affirmation of the symbolism of the circle: whatever we enclose within the circle is a sacred and holy space, set apart from other spaces. And because this space is holy and sacred, it is protected by the circle, by this boundary. This may call to mind something from magic, because a sorcerer does something similar: he draws a circle on the ground, steps inside it, and in a manner of speaking sets that space apart from the rest of the profane world. But here, what does the space traced by this circular movement signify?
It is the realm of the Kingdom of God. All the time that the newlyweds stood here before us, they were within liturgical time. Liturgical time is a longing—a longing for the Kingdom of God. Now we also have space: a longing for Paradise, for the realm of Paradise. And therefore we see something very important, my dear friends. The couple’s journey is not merely a journey through this life; it is a journey placed upon the axis of eternity and of the Kingdom of God. Our time has passed, but allow me to add something very briefly. I left the readings from the Apostle and the Gospel until the end. I shall speak about them only in passing.
Just a few thoughts, and then we shall finish. The epistle reading presents us with two parallel themes. I shall not read it, though I ought to; that is why I have Holy Scripture open before me. But our time has passed. It gives us two parallel themes: the marriage of Christ and the Church, and the marriage of a man and a woman. The Apostle is chiefly concerned with the first. He simply takes the first as the basis for speaking about the second. But the first is the fundamental and important one. It is the prototype and its image, the object and its reflection. When I place an object before a mirror and its image appears, that is what we have here. The marriage of Christ and the Church is the prototype; human marriage is the reflection, which in a certain way mirrors the marriage of Christ and His bride, the Church. See, then, how these
two themes are wondrously interwoven in the epistle reading. First of all, it expresses the mystical marriage of Christ and His bride, the Church. Adam falls asleep so that Eve may be brought forth from his side. Christ sleeps upon the Cross; He dies. But notice this word “sleeps.” Did we not speak earlier of the Apostle Paul’s words, “if her husband falls asleep”? To fall asleep means to die. Christ died upon the Cross; He slept upon the Cross; He fell asleep upon the Cross. And there, as He slept and was pierced by the centurion, blood and water came forth.
“He who saw it has borne witness, and his testimony is true,” says John the Evangelist. The one who saw it bore witness, and his testimony is true. John the Evangelist emphasizes this. Why? The water and the blood signify the two fundamental Mysteries that constitute the Church: Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. Therefore, the Church sprang forth from the side of Christ. She sprang forth—do you hear? The water and blood poured out and flowed. Through these two Mysteries I become part of the Church of Christ, the body of Christ. For the water and blood that flowed came from the very substance of Christ’s body. Therefore, since the subject has arisen, the Church was not founded at Pentecost. At Pentecost she was officially manifested, just as here, in the joining of hands, the Mystery is accomplished, while in the crowning we have its confirmation and, in a certain sense, the manifestation of that joining.
Here the Church springs from the side of Christ, just as Eve came from the side of Adam. Moreover, the woman is flesh and bone from Adam’s flesh and bones. Did Adam not say this? The Apostle Paul says that the Church also is “of His flesh and of His bones.” This is not merely moral or figurative, but ontological and real, because we partake of the body and blood of Christ—the true body and blood of Christ. Moreover, Christ is the head of the body, the Church, because He is also her Savior. “The husband is the head of the wife, and he is the savior of the body.” What is his body? His wife.
He is to save his wife. The Church submits to Christ, and the wife ought to submit to her husband. Christ loved the Church, and the husband ought to love his wife. Therefore, in the epistle reading we are given three measures: the measure of salvation, the measure of submission, and the measure of love. The object and its reflection; the prototype and the antitype that corresponds to it. The marriage of Christ and the Church, and the marriage of man and woman, are wondrously interwoven in parallel, so that, in a certain sense, the one cannot stand without the other. And Saint John of Damascus says:
“Thus the Mystery is accomplished, with the truth confirmed in the type: for the woman’s being taken from the man and joined to him prefigured Christ and the Church.” He says that this type—the woman being taken from the man—revealed the Church being brought forth from the side of Christ. And now, concerning the Gospel reading: I do not know what you feel when you hear the Gospel passage at every wedding. It calls to mind an idyllic scene, when everything at its beginning is so beautiful. Christ has not yet begun His public ministry and has not yet worked a single miracle. Everything, we might say, is dawning beautifully and promises a beautiful outcome. Every beginning is beautiful when it is filled with dreams, beating hearts, hopes, and promises. Christ was invited to a wedding.
The Theotokos was invited, and His first disciples were invited as well, for He had not yet gathered all twelve disciples. And Christ went. Listen: Christ went. He did not disdain the occasion or say, “I have no place here.” Marriage was something that had to be included in the salvation brought by the Angel of Great Counsel. And, as John Chrysostom says, He also brought a gift. He did not go empty-handed; He turned the water into wine for them. But let us consider the events in order. The Theotokos speaks to the Lord and tells Him, “They have no wine.” What does this mean? It means that the fragrant, potent wine of love has run dry.
What remains is the passion of the flesh. That powerful love which God brings to mankind is no longer present. “They have no wine. They have no wine.” The Lord commands that the jars be filled with water. What does “Fill the water jars” mean? It means that He asks them to offer Him that weak and insipid human reality, so that it may be transformed into the potent, fragrant wine of love, which He alone, as God, can give. And the water became wine. This is the great miracle: God transforms human weaknesses, the human passions, and the fading of human feelings into the potent wine of love. The master of the feast then good-naturedly protests that the good wine is usually served first, and the inferior wine only after the guests have become drunk, whereas, “You have kept the good wine until the end.” What is happening here? The love that Christ gives—His own love, the love that truly unites human beings—is a love that begins at the moment of marriage, or even from the day of betrothal, I would say, and continues until the final breath and beyond the grave. We sometimes see this when one spouse remains behind
and continues to love the other who has departed from this world. It is the love that remains whole and strong to the very edge of the grave, like potent, fragrant wine. Moses, my dear friends, began his first miracle by turning water into blood. That was the law of the curse. Christ began His first miracle by turning water into wine. This is the law of grace. It is the grace and blessing given precisely within the meaning of love, which is the essence of the Gospel. But now, a very brief recap—only half a minute. The two were not one from the beginning. Marriage is the Mystery of love.
It is the image of the union between Christ and the Church. The second love within marriage—for the first is carnal—is the deep love that is in the Lord, and it must continually gain ground in the hearts of the spouses. The purpose of marriage is theosis: the spouses helping one another toward theosis through love. Then come chastity and, thirdly, the bearing of children. The criteria for choosing a husband or wife are, first, piety and, second, compatibility of character. But we shall close with a most beautiful reflection by Tertullian on Christian marriage.
What a union it is that binds two Christian spouses together! They have the same hope and the same direction in their desires; they obey the same teaching and share one Lord. It is a union of the spirit as well as of the flesh: one spirit and one flesh. They read Holy Scripture, pray together, fast together, instruct, encourage, and help one another. You see them together in the Church and at the Lord’s Table. Their sorrows, persecutions, joys, and hopes are shared. They conceal nothing from one another. Neither avoids the other, and neither is ever a burden to the other. They can freely visit the sick and come to the aid of the poor. Hymns and songs are heard between them, and they vie with one another to see who can best glorify God. Christ rejoices when He sees and hears these things, and upon such people He sends His peace. Where two are gathered in His name, there He also is. My dear friends, may God bless us.
May blessed marriage, as God ordained it, be granted now and always to the faithful of our Church. Our forthcoming talks will concern spiritual matters, since we are at the beginning of Great Lent. The next subject will be very interesting, and I ask that no one be absent. Since we are at the beginning of Great Lent, I wish you abundant blessing from the Lord. May He help us to live through Holy and Great Lent as He desires. Tomorrow at the Church of Saint Achillios, at seven in the evening, we shall celebrate the evening Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. If you can, please come. And now, as the crowning conclusion to all that has been said, we ask His Eminence for his blessing and for a few closing words, whatever he wishes to tell us.
Are you getting up? Do not get up. In other words, in summarizing the entire subject that has occupied you through this series of talks, he said that marriage is a Mystery, a Mystery instituted by God; that the chief purpose of marriage is the theosis of the newlyweds; and that, in every respect, those preparing for marriage must prepare accordingly,
both before and after the wedding, so that they may receive the crown of the Lord. It is a fact that marriage, and through it the family, held until quite recently—at least in our homeland—a very exalted place both in the love of God and in the conscience of us all. Yet in recent years that position has been shaken and marriage has, in a certain sense, been diminished. The reason is well known. It follows naturally, because marriage has been removed precisely from its foundation...
For marriage has been uprooted from its foundation, stripped of its character as a Mystery, and reduced to a mere transaction. It is therefore entirely natural that we should see the consequences we are experiencing today and facing with such bitterness. I have nothing more to add, except to wish with all my soul and heart that at least those of us who have listened to and followed this series of talks may help ourselves and inspire both ourselves and those around us with the sense that it is our need and duty to restore marriage to its proper place. We must regard it as the Mystery that the good God has appointed it to be; and, I repeat once again, our preparation must be worthy of it.
This preparation is necessary not only before marriage but also after marriage, if we want the marriage to progress, bear fruit, and fulfill its purposes. I pray that the good God will grant that everything said throughout this whole series of talks—with such clarity, conviction, and beauty—may find an echo in our hearts, and that together we may labor for this great purpose: to understand marriage as a Mystery and to live it as such, so that through it God may be glorified, and so too may our homeland, which has always believed in marriage and has founded all that is beautiful, noble, and holy upon Christian marriage. May God be with us.
May He be with those who are already married, so that they may make their marriage more pleasing and acceptable before God; and with those preparing for marriage, so that they may take to heart the true criteria for marriage. May the marriages of both be blessed, to the glory of God.

Καταστάσεις προ του γάμου, μιλήσαμε σε μια προηγούμενη συγκέντρωσή μας, και καταστάσεις μετά τον γάμο, όπως είναι η μοιχεία, «κρινεί», θα καταδικάσει αυτός. Γιατί, αδερφέ μου, αφήνεις τη γυναίκα σου; Γιατί, κυρά μου, αφήνεις τον άνδρα σου; Γιατί; Τι θέλεις; Τι περισσότερο θέλεις; Γιατί γίνεσαι σαρκικός άνθρωπος; Γιατί; Διότι ακριβώς γι' αυτό δόθηκε και ο γάμος, για να σβήσει την φλόγα του πάθους, δηλαδή να εξασφαλίσει την σωφροσύνη, όπως είχαμε πει ότι είναι ο δεύτερος σκοπός του γάμου. Και εσύ τώρα ανάπτεις περισσότερο τη φλόγα. Έρχεσαι εκποδών να βάλεις την σωφροσύνη, και τότε τι γίνεται; Αυτό θα σου παράξει ευτυχία; Θα σου δώσει χαρά;
Αυτό όμως που θα οδηγήσει, θα το ξανατονίσω αυτό το πράγμα, τους συζύγους εις την σωτηρία, δεν είναι απλώς η σωτηρία, το αίσθημα της σωτηρίας· το αίσθημα της αγάπης. Εάν, δηλαδή, θες την γυναίκα σου να τη δεις να σώζεται, αυτό θα το πετύχεις μόνο αν αγαπάς. Και η γυναίκα το ίδιο τον άνθρωπο. Δηλαδή ποτέ δεν πρέπει να λέμε «σε αγαπώ για να σε σώσω». Όχι. Αλλά πρέπει να λέμε «σε σώζω γιατί σε αγαπώ». Ο Θεός δεν ήρθε να μας σώσει και εκ της σωτηρίας να γεννηθεί αγάπη, αλλά μας ηγάπησε και μας έσωσε. «Ούτω γαρ ηγάπησεν ο Θεός τον κόσμον». Εκείνο το «ούτω», απύθμενο, αμέτρητο. Τόσο πολύ, λέει, ηγάπησεν ο Θεός τον κόσμον, είδατε;
Στέφανα ακόμη δείχνουν και τη μεγάλη νίκη, τη νίκη των νεονύμφων, όπως λέγει ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος, εις τον μεγάλον στίβο της σωφροσύνης. Λέγει ο 958 κώδιξ του 15ου αιώνα, του Όρους του Σινά, «στέφανον σωφροσύνης ως έπαθλον παρθενίας τούτοις κατακόσμησον». Τι είναι, λοιπόν, δείγμα ότι τα στεφάνια είναι εμβλήματα νίκης; Ποιας νίκης; Ότι εσύ, ο άνδρας, έμεινες αγνός μέχρι το γάμο σου. Καλά, ακούμε πολλές φορές εμείς να λένε πολλοί, «Ε, σαν άνδρας». Τι θα πει σαν άνδρας, αδελφέ μου; Ότι δηλαδή, επειδή ακριβώς είσαι άνδρας, έπρεπε να πέσεις εσύ στην ανηθικότητα;
Γίνεται μέσα εις το ναό, δυστυχώς. Δεν ξέρω γιατί. Κανονικά πρέπει να γίνει απ' έξω από το ναό. Αν θέλετε, ακόμη, στα εγκαίνια κάνουμε μία τριπλή περιφορά γύρω-γύρω από το ναό. Αυτή η τριπλή περιφορά είναι η τριπλή ενίσχυση του συμβόλου του κύκλου, που σημαίνει ότι ό,τι κλείνουμε μες στον κύκλον είναι ένας ιερός, άγιος χώρος, τον οποίο ξεχωρίζουμε από τους άλλους χώρους. Και ο χώρος αυτός, αφού είναι άγιος και ιερός, προστατεύεται από τον κύκλον, από την περιφέρεια αυτή. Θα θυμίζει κάτι από τη μαγεία, ότι ο μάγος το ίδιο πράγμα κάνει κι αυτός. Κάνει ένα κύκλο κάτω και μπαίνει μέσα και τρόπον τινά καθιερώνει τον χώρο αυτόν έναντι του υπολοίπου βεβήλου χώρου. Εδώ όμως τι σημασία έχει αυτός ο χώρος που διαγράφει γύρω-γύρω;
