Summary
A missionary journey through the Pindus Mountains illustrates how prayer should begin with praise and thanksgiving before presenting requests to God. The words “Our Father” teach that Christian prayer is communal, embracing relatives, neighbors, cities, nations, the Church, missionary work, and all humanity rather than only a private circle. The lecture concludes by introducing corporate prayer as the united labor of the faithful, whose shared petitions possess a strength comparable to many hands accomplishing one task.

Now that he is in heaven, there is no fear to hold me back. We set out from Trikala to undertake a missionary journey in the Pindus Mountains. Those of you who have been to the Pindus will know the circumstances and conditions in which the people there live—our fellow human beings, our fellow Greeks.
At one very high point, twelve hundred meters above sea level—I can see it before me even now—we were traveling by jeep. The bishop ordered the driver to stop, and we got out. I wondered why we were stopping. “Come, Father Theologos,” he said, “let us go a little farther down here.” The place was not unfamiliar to either of us, but for him it was the perfect place for prayer. We went to a spot that was rather like a balcony. Below us were ravines; above us, the brilliantly clear sky; and all around us, the mountain peaks, the trees, the birds—everything.
“Let us say a little prayer, my child,” he said, “because we are about to begin a great work.” Believe me, my dear friends, I tell you sincerely that even now I still shiver when I remember it. For it may have been one of those prayers that spoke most deeply to me and taught me. This blessed man began to pray with a doxology. That is what I wanted to emphasize. He began in this way—for perhaps you are wondering, “Prayer as doxology?” He began: “O God and Lord of hosts, You who created the heavens, the earth, the sea, the mountains, the ravines, the valleys, the trees, the birds, all the winged creatures...”
Everything—he mentioned everything. He wove together what I would call a prayer of doxology and thanksgiving, creating the atmosphere and spiritual disposition in which he could then make his requests. And what did he ask after that? “This is who You are, O God. Since You are the God of love and the God of majesty, hear me now. My assistant and I are going to visit so many villages, to see the Christians, draw near to them, say a few words to them, strengthen them in love, and strengthen them in life. Come with us. Illumine our nous, our spiritual intellect, and our understanding, and protect us.” There were ravines everywhere. You have not been there, so perhaps you do not know. Those who live here on the plains are strangers to such terrain.
When I say ravines, my dear friends, I mean ravines so deep that at any moment you could lose all sense of safety. Five hundred meters straight down—if the jeep strayed even a little from the road, no one would survive. I remember that after this doxology, thanksgiving, and supplication, we set out. And how we set out! I, at least, felt like a different person. For a month we traveled throughout the Pindus, visiting every one of its sixty villages, and not the slightest thing happened to us. When we returned, he said, “My child, what a blessing our journey was! What joy from God this journey brought us!”
I could also tell you how, when we arrived, those people waited for us like thirsty deer. Why have I told you all this? I thank Father Athanasios for reminding me of it, because he reconnected me with beautiful days and beautiful moments, in beautiful places—Greek lands and Greek landscapes—and with beautiful people, people of noble hearts and beautiful souls. I thank God greatly. But I also tell you this so that you may understand that our prayer truly must begin with doxology to God. We come here, and you may say to me, “Must we go up into the mountains to do what you described?” No. We can do it wherever we may be. Here, for example. As you come here from your homes to hear the word of God, you can say: “My God, You who created mankind, who have spoken good things into human hearts, and who give them Your love, Your...
blessing, Your gift, and Your Holy Spirit; You who created the human person, this masterpiece fashioned by the art of Your love, this exquisite work of Your love—blessed be Your name, my God. And now I beseech You: guide my steps as I go to hear the preaching. And not only that, but give me the desire; and not only the desire, but also the strength to put it into practice.” See what a prayer this is: it contains doxology, supplication, thanksgiving—everything you could desire.
To conclude, I will say no more. Prayer is truly and beautifully described in many ways. We call it the oxygen of our life, our very life, and our breath. It is the blessing of God, the love of God, and God’s kiss upon the human person. You may understand prayer in any of these ways. They all emphasize our need to cultivate the spirit of prayer. As we have said, prayer includes doxology, prayer for our own needs, and prayer for the needs of others. Let us not remain concerned only with our own needs. At this very moment, a whole world needs us and needs our support.
Since we are in Great Lent, I ask you: what should give color and character to these days of our life more than anything else, if not prayer? Prayer, then, my dear friends! For truly, more than ever before, countless issues and problems surround and trouble us in our time, beginning with ourselves, our children, our family, our city, our nation, and all humanity.
However many and varied these problems may be, through prayer and within prayer we shall find their solution and their answer. And let us always begin with doxology to God: “Great is the name of the Lord. Blessed is Your name, my Lord.” This part of our prayer—its doxology—has the power to create within us the proper climate, disposition, and spiritual atmosphere.
It creates, as I said, the disposition that enables us afterward to bring our petitions properly before the great Creator, our great God. Then, I believe, our prayer will bring us rest and will also provide an answer and a solution to our many problems. Let us pray, then—let us truly pray. Let us become people of prayer, of this kind of prayer, and let us live the remainder of our lives in prayer. May God be with us.
We had spoken about the objects of prayer and explained that the first object of prayer is the glory of God—doxology. The second is our own needs, both spiritual and material. Then comes the third and final object: the needs of our neighbor. For within prayer, the commandment of love for God must certainly find its fulfillment; and this is the first object of prayer, doxology.
Then comes love for our neighbor, the second great commandment, concerning which the Lord says: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There can be no true love for our neighbor unless that love also bears the anointing of prayer. In the same way, no one can confine himself to prayer alone without also actively helping his neighbor, either materially or spiritually. Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, says that it is wrong to tell someone, “Well, brother, may God keep you. Go, eat your fill and keep warm—eat your fill and keep warm,” while failing to give him the things he needs
to keep warm and sustain himself. But let us not forget this: whether we have nothing suitable to give our neighbor, whether he is far away from us, or whether we do give him what he needs but must not be content with that alone, prayer still takes first place. We must understand this. A person who does not pray for his neighbor has no love. He has no love. We know this well. At this point I could tell you that one of the principal works of monks and hermits—those who may have little or perhaps no contact at all with the world—is prayer. Through their prayer for the world, they fulfill the commandment to love their neighbor. People often object and ask, “What does a hermit do to fulfill the commandment of love for his neighbor?” This is the answer: hermits pray. Prayer is a work, and love is a work; indeed, prayer is plainly the highest of works. Through their intense and fervent prayer, they offer their finest gift on behalf of their neighbor. But let us continue. The meaning of the words “Our Father,” which the Lord taught us as the content of prayer, clearly
expresses precisely this sense of communion, for that is what the word “our” reveals. It shows the feeling for others that should prevail within our soul. When the Lord gave us His prayer as a model, a pattern, and a mold according to which every prayer and every petition of ours should be formed, He did not say, “My Father,” but “Our Father.” He showed that the Father is not yours alone, but the Father of all. When you say, “Our Father,” you are at the same time acknowledging the presence of your neighbor.
As we have said, our neighbor has both material and spiritual needs, and those needs must become our own petitions. In the time of our Lord, there were many paralytics, but they could not go and find Christ. Remember yesterday’s Gospel reading. Who had to help in that particular case? The four men who carried the paralytic. To refer to yesterday’s reading, they did not content themselves with saying, “My brother, we have brought you as far as the door, but you can see that the entrance is so crowded that we cannot possibly get inside. We have done our duty, so we will leave you here.” They did not do that.
They climbed up from the neighboring house, crossed over to the house where the Lord was, opened the roof, and lowered the paralytic before Christ. The Lord praised the four men. We see, then, that some people are paralyzed in body and cannot care for themselves. But many are also paralyzed in spirit and cannot find salvation by themselves. In their spiritual paralysis, they cannot even reach out their hand to take up a spiritual book or Holy Scripture, to pray, to attend Church, or to seek God’s help. Who will help them? We will, through our prayer.
This is precisely what the Word of God exhorts us to do: “Pray for one another, that you may be healed.” And the Apostle writes in his First Epistle to Timothy: “I exhort, therefore, first of all, that supplications be made.” Before everything else, offer supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for all people. For all people—not merely for five or ten friends and relatives, but for everyone.
Let me ask you: do you pray for your children and your husband? You will say, “And for your mother and father?” Yes. But do you pray for your neighborhood? Please, let each one of you ask herself: Have I prayed for my neighborhood? Have I prayed for the baker or the grocer in my neighborhood, if I have become aware that these people are facing difficulties? Have I prayed for the city in which I live? We pray, “O Lord, deliver us from pestilence, famine, earthquake, flood, fire, sword, and invasion by enemies,” and so forth. This concerns our common life, for if a deadly plague strikes the city, will you escape? If famine comes, will you still eat your fill?
If civil strife breaks out, will you rest peacefully in your home? Does this not, in the end, affect you as well? Of course it does. Therefore, my dear friends, let us pray, as the Apostle says, for all people: for the good and the wicked, the small and the great, the wise and the unwise, those who are near and those who are far away. The Apostle adds: “For this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” It is good and acceptable, he says. God desires it and loves it.
For He desires all people to be saved. And, if you will, because personal freedom is involved, our prayer helps bring about God’s intervention for the salvation of others. That is why even the Apostle Paul—the great Paul, inspired by God, who received Christ’s help so directly—did not hesitate, as I told you, to ask for the support of the brethren’s prayers, so that the Gospel might advance.
Does Christ not care about the progress of His Gospel? Of course He does. And yet the Apostle asks for the support of the faithful’s prayers on behalf of the Gospel. This is because of the freedom I mentioned earlier: God does not intervene unless man says yes. That yes of man—forgive me, that willing disposition of man—must ultimately be surrounded by our prayer, so that God may come, stand beside him, and help. Specifically, the Apostle says, “Finally, brethren, pray for us.” It is as though he were making an appeal: “That the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men.”
“Pray for us,” he says, “so that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and God may be glorified, and also that God may deliver us from wicked men.” The Prophet Samuel regarded it as a sin on his part if he did not pray for the people. He himself says to them, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you.” Far be it from me, he says, not to pray for you. That would be a sin against God on my part. It is prayer for others—the prayers of devout people—that restrains the outpouring of God’s wrath because of the sins of the world. Aristides the Apologist says, “The world is sustained because of the supplication of Christians.” The world continues to exist because Christians pray. Prayer is a vast subject. Perhaps we cannot comprehend the network that is woven, linking persons and events throughout history. We cannot even grasp it: the network of prayer that ultimately holds humanity together.
Can it be seen? How could it be? God alone sees it. The network of prayers is visible to God. When the soldiers came to arrest Saint Polycarp, he surrendered himself at a small house out in the countryside. After setting food before them, he asked them to wait a little while so that he could pray. Saint Polycarp prayed for two hours. Listen as I read to you from his life: “And when they had permitted him”—that is, when the soldiers had given him permission—“he stood and prayed, being filled with the grace of God.” Filled with the grace of God.
“And when they had permitted him, he stood and prayed, being so filled with the grace of God that for two hours he could not be silent.” For two hours he did not stop, because he never ceased praying, “remembering all whom he had ever met, both small and great.” He remembered everyone he had ever known throughout his life, small and great, “the renowned and the obscure”—whether they were unknown people or prominent and distinguished—and “the whole Catholic Church throughout the inhabited world.” He prayed for the entire Church. And Saint Gregory the Theologian, in a letter to Saint Amphilochius, writes to him:
How sublime it is! The two Gregories, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa, are unsurpassed—truly unsurpassed. In their expression and language, they surpass all the Fathers who have ever appeared in the Church, even John Chrysostom and Basil the Great. Their manner of expression is difficult, however. Saint Gregory says—and I shall read it to you in translation—“Do not neglect to pray and intercede for us when, by the word of prayer...”
“...you bring down this power upon the altar; when, by the bloodless cutting, you divide the Master’s Body and Blood; when you wield your voice in place of a sword.” What a beautiful expression! In other words, when you celebrate the Divine Liturgy, the Bloodless Sacrifice, do not forget us, we beg you; do not neglect to pray for us. But we must also pray for the departed—not merely because they once lived among us and were dear to us, but because, if you will, we have a duty to pray for them. They are alive; they have not ceased to exist. It would be futile and foolish to pray for beings who no longer existed. It would be strange.
Am I to pray for a departed person who does not exist? Where have you ever heard of such a thing—praying for what does not exist? And yet, precisely because the departed do exist, we are commanded to pray for them. The Apostolic Constitutions are a collection of eight ancient books. They give the following instruction. They say many things, but I shall take only one passage: “Let the third-day, ninth-day, and fortieth-day commemorations of the departed be observed,” and so on. These are the memorial services. The passage concerns memorial services, but I do not wish to speak about them in particular. I want to dwell on this point alone.
“Let the third-day commemoration of the departed be observed with psalms and prayers.” The central point is precisely those words, “with psalms and prayers”: we must pray for our departed brethren. That is why we invite friends and acquaintances to a memorial service, so that they may pray for the soul of the departed brother or sister. My dear friends, I do not know, but I fear that memorial services have deteriorated into social events. We place all the emphasis on our appearance and on how many people we invite and who they are. If a relative is not invited, or a friend is forgotten, they are ready to take offense and criticize us.
Then there are all the other preparations we feel obliged to make for our guests: having them come to the house, offering them refreshments, and afterward serving them a meal. Worst of all, during a fasting season we serve meat and defile even those who may still have been fasting, but who perhaps lack courage—one of the four virtues that the ancient Greeks always held in high esteem, placing courage first. Basil the Great also uses this fourfold scheme of the virtues, as it is called, and likewise places courage first. If a person has no courage, he is lost, without strength of will. He must be able to say, “Forgive me, but I will not eat, because it is a fasting season.”
What prevails instead? This inexplicable, strange cowardice—the hypocrisy of impiety. We pretend that we are not devout, because if we say that we are devout and are fasting, people will misunderstand us. And so we eat—we eat meat and defile ourselves. And now I ask: were these guests invited supposedly to pray for the soul of the departed, while at the same time, through this meal, they provoke God’s anger? I repeat: I fear that modern memorial services have become mere social events, and if we omit them, others are ready...
...to misunderstand us and tell us that we supposedly did not love the...
...departed brother or sister, that we forgot to hold the memorial service, that we did not invite enough people, that we did not provide a meal, or any number of other things. Listen to me, my dear friends. Let there be a meal. Indeed, if you wish, this is stated in the eighth book of the Apostolic Constitutions, in the section “On Memorials.”
It says there that after the memorial service, those who were present in the Church may eat. But take care: if it is a fasting season, we must not serve non-fasting food, but food appropriate to the fast. Is it not a fast? Let us serve whatever else we wish.
Do we thank God by breaking the fast? Furthermore...
We go to memorial services to pray for the person who has departed. Yet here too I fear that most people go and stand there like mute pillars—I suspect this, at least—without praying for the departed, because they are merely fulfilling a social obligation and nothing more. The truly communal act is to pray for the other person when you understand that he needs your prayer. But do not say that the departed person must be someone you know before you can pray at a memorial service. Whenever you are in the Church and a memorial service is being held, even if you know none of those present...
...pray. It is a duty of the Church. If you do not pray, saying that it is none of your concern, it is as though you were separating yourself from the rest of the Body of the Church. John Chrysostom says something very striking: “Even if he departed as a sinner, for that very reason we must help him through prayers and supplications.” Even if he died a sinner, he says, we must help him. That word “help” is truly revealing, because the departed really do receive help. We must help them, he says, through our prayers. And he adds, “Let us not grow weary in helping those who have departed.” Let us not lose heart, grow tired, or become bored...
...but through our prayers let us help those who have departed from this world, “making offerings on their behalf.” What should we offer? Above all, my dear friends, we should bring our prosphoron to the Church. You have heard this before, and I have told you: the most important thing we can do for the departed is to offer prosphoron to the Church with the name of the departed. That comes first; everything else follows—the candles, the memorial services, everything. The principal thing is the Divine Liturgy, the Divine Liturgy. Never forget this. It is the Divine Liturgy. We should make our offering. It is not necessary to arrange a separate Liturgy of our own; many people may not be able to do that. But when the Liturgy is celebrated, we bring our prosphoron, which represents our presence...
...and the presence of the departed, and we submit the departed person’s name to be commemorated. If you wish, ask the priest to commemorate that name immediately after the Mystery has been accomplished. When the chanters sing, “Especially for our Most Holy, Most Pure Theotokos,” the priest in the altar continues the prayer of the Holy Anaphora and commemorates the departed. Because there is not enough time, this commemoration is often omitted beyond what was done at the Proskomide. The commemoration was made there, at the Proskomide, but it should also be made again at this point. Ask the priest to commemorate the name that is especially dear to you at that moment, after the consecration of the Precious Gifts.
John Chrysostom says, “Deeming them worthy that prayers be offered on their behalf.” So these are the three objects of prayer: the glorification of God; our personal needs, both material and spiritual; and the needs of our neighbor, both material and spiritual. Material and spiritual. We should ask God to grant salvation to another person, or to provide what that person needs in order to live, or to give him work, or to send rain upon the land. It makes no difference whether or not you own fields. Do you not eat bread from the bakery? Then does it not concern you that the earth should be fruitful, so that you too may eat bread? Never say, “Whether the farmer has a harvest or not, I will still eat bread, so what does it matter to me?” Never say such a thing.
We should pray that rain may fall on other people’s fields at the proper time, and that the seasons may come in due order so that the earth may bear fruit. All these are petitions for the needs of our neighbor. With this, we conclude our treatment of the threefold object of prayer. And now, my beloved, let us turn to another point: communal and individual prayer. When we speak of communal and individual prayer, we are asking how we are to begin learning to pray—not what we are to ask for...
but how we are to begin praying, and what form our prayer is to take. One form of prayer—not in terms of its content—is communal prayer: in other words, gathering with other people and praying together with them. This, then, is communal prayer: the gathering of the faithful in one place for the purpose of praying together. Communal prayer is like many hands working together to accomplish a task. If, for example, the area outside here, in the church courtyard, has...
scraps of paper lying on the ground, then the place is dirty. If one person had to clean it, it would take a long time. But if, when we go outside, I told each lady to clear away whatever was in front of her—little stones or anything else she saw—then in a very short time the whole area would be perfectly clean. That is communal prayer. It is many hands working together. Here is another example. Suppose there is an enormous stone, a boulder, that we cannot roll away, and we want to remove it from our grounds. Many hands will help. In the same way, when we ask God for something great in prayer...
many prayers offered together will help bring about what we ask God to grant us. And I must tell you that God loves communal prayer and almost always answers it. Why? Because communal prayer is more fitting and more solemn for His glory. When the whole community—that is, the people—asks God for something, everyone knows what has been requested; and when God grants it, the whole community glorifies Him. This is why our Lord emphasized it when He told us: “If two of you agree...
on earth concerning anything they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in Heaven.” If two people on earth agree and ask anything of God “in My name”—He says that elsewhere; forgive me—then My heavenly Father will give it to them. And He continues: “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” Wherever two or three are gathered in My name, I too am there among them. Great indeed are the power and grace of communal prayer. Origen says...
“What could be more delightful and beneficial? A place of prayer—the place where believers assemble together.” That is, everyone gathers together and asks something of God. You will also have recognized this from personal experience. I believe I mentioned it on a previous occasion. When an entire community, the whole people, asks for rain during a drought, for example—have you noticed what happens? It does not rain, and still it does not rain. We offer our individual prayers, but the rain does not come. The whole community, the people, must pray. The people gather, go to church, pray, and the rain comes.
Have you noticed this? Honestly, as far as I know, God has never left the prayer of the people unanswered when they have gathered for a procession of supplication. We know this; it is well known. Many times, people from villages—delegations—come to the bishop’s office and ask for such a procession because of the drought. The procession takes place, and the rain comes. Is this not also what the Prophet Elijah did when he brought an end to the drought that had lasted three and a half years? That is what he did. He did not pray alone. The ending of the drought had to be a public and solemn event, because the drought itself had been public, and it had been public because the people’s sin was public...
the people had sinned against God publicly. Therefore, God also chastised them publicly. Their metanoia, their repentance, had to be public, and the ending of the drought had to be public as well. This is why the Prophet Elijah took the people up Mount Carmel, so that all the people would be present when the prophet offered the sacrifice and the prayer, when the priests of shame were put to shame, and when the rain came, we might say, in a majestic manner. The deliverance itself had to come majestically.
Communal prayer.
I would say that those who pray together literally shake the place where they are gathered and bring down the Holy Spirit upon earthen vessels. Something in Holy Scripture has often struck me. In the fourth chapter of Acts, when the Apostles had been arrested by the rulers and punished with imprisonment and beatings, they returned to the place where the faithful were gathered and told them exactly what they had suffered. “And being released, the Apostles went to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.”
When the faithful heard this, they raised their voices to God with one accord and said, “Master, You who made Heaven and earth,” and so forth. And when they had finished their prayer, having asked for boldness—that is, courage and fortitude, for this was precisely what the Apostles had spoken about...
“When they had prayed, the place where they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit”; they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God with boldness, with courage. This truly is the power of communal prayer. Never, my beloved, never let us underestimate communal prayer, because communal prayer is nothing other than the prayer of the Church. That is what communal prayer means. This is what we should call it: the prayer of the Church. For the Church is always the Church at prayer, and the prayer of the Church resolves...
the most difficult problems and opens a way where there is not even one reasonable way out—not one. The Apostle Peter in prison is a classic example. Sixteen soldiers were guarding the Apostle Peter in prison, and Herod intended to put him to death the next day. Four of the soldiers were actually chained to him. It is astonishing. They were inside the cell with him, bound to him hand to hand. When your hand is chained to a soldier’s hand, another soldier is chained to your other hand, and your foot is chained to another soldier’s foot, tell me, can you escape? Tell me. Even if you merely try to move your hand a little, the soldier will wake up. But there was one power they had failed to reckon with: the power of the praying Church. We are told that prayer was being offered in the house of Mary, the mother of Mark. During the night, while Peter was asleep, an angel came, woke him, and said, “Rise.” Poor Peter thought he was dreaming. The chains fell away, the soldiers remained asleep, the first prison door opened, and then the second prison door opened...
The angel led the Apostle Peter out, took him along one street, turned down another, and then left him there. The Apostle Peter still thought he was asleep and dreaming. Then he came to himself and said, “Now I know that God sent His angel to save me.” He had thought that he was still asleep and seeing a dream. “And when Peter had come to himself, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was called Mark, where many were gathered together and praying.” Many people were gathered there, praying for Peter. Yet even those who were praying, my beloved, could not grasp the tremendous power of their own prayer, because when the Apostle Peter knocked at the door...
the servant girl Rhoda came out and recognized Peter’s voice. In her joy, she did not open the door, but ran inside and cried, “Peter is outside!” They could not believe her and said, “It must be his angel—his angel.” But Rhoda insisted: “What do you mean, his angel? It is Peter!” The commotion had to be kept down so that the neighborhood would not become aware of what was happening, for the Apostle Peter kept knocking at the door. At last they went out and saw Peter. The answer to their prayer had come so unexpectedly and so quickly. My beloved, this, I tell you again, is the power of prayer. This is why Saint John Chrysostom exclaims:
“Behold!”
“Continually frequent the churches.” I exhort you; I counsel you: be continually present and gather regularly in the churches. The Apostle Paul, in the Epistle to the Hebrews, protests and says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the custom of some.” Some people, he says, have the habit of not attending the assembly—that is, the Church, the gathering where everyone comes together to pray and to worship God in the Divine Liturgy, and so forth. But why is this communal prayer so necessary, when its culmination is the Divine Liturgy? Because, my beloved, when the faithful are present, praying and offering the highest worship—the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—their presence makes the Church visible within history. The Church is manifested in the world. I have told you this before, not once but many times. The gathering is necessary so that the Church may appear tangibly within the world and within history. This may surprise you. Why did Christ command His disciples...
after His Resurrection, during those forty days, not to leave Jerusalem, but to remain all together and await the Promise of the Father, the descent of the Holy Spirit? Why did He tell them this? I will quote the passage from the first chapter of Acts: “Do not depart, but wait for the Promise of the Father.” Do not separate, but wait for the Father’s promise. Could the Holy Spirit not have found each person wherever he was and come to illumine him? I will give you a parallel example that we will discuss in the coming days in connection with the Sunday readings. I mentioned it yesterday as well. When God said to Moses...
“Choose seventy-two elders, men of understanding,” and so forth, they were to help the people with their various problems, serving as judges and in other capacities. Two of them had not come to the gathering. Something had happened to them, perhaps something beyond their control. When the Spirit of God descended upon the seventy, Joshua the son of Nun hurried to Moses and cried out that the Holy Spirit had also descended upon the two who had not come. They were in their own tents and had not been present. And indeed...
Joshua the son of Nun said this as though he wanted Moses to rebuke them. But Moses answered him: “Are you jealous for them because of the Spirit of God? Are you questioning why the Spirit of God came upon them even though they were not present? Are you jealous, Joshua son of Nun?” When we come to that passage, God willing, we shall examine it more closely. But how did the Holy Spirit come upon the two who were absent? Could the same thing not have happened here? Does the Spirit of God lose track of people? Is He unable to find them? No. It is as I told you. The command “Do not separate” was not given so that the Holy Spirit could find them, but so that the Church might be manifested in the world. On the day of Pentecost, the Church was publicly established and made manifest.
The Church’s founding? No—not its founding, but its public inauguration and manifestation. The Church was founded, my dear friends, through Christ’s Sacrifice on the Cross. From His side flowed blood and water—that is, Baptism and the Holy Eucharist, the Mysteries that constitute the Church. For through these we have the Church, and only through these do we have the Church: Baptism and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Here one can see very clearly the value of the Church’s prayer, the gathering of the faithful, and the power that the presence of the faithful exerts, I would say, upon God Himself.
Whenever the Church makes supplication to God and entreats the Lord, the Lord grants what His people truly ask. Conversely, those who avoid corporate prayer offer such ridiculous excuses. They say, “I do not go to church to pray; I stay home and pray, because I am scandalized in church. I see strange things there that I do not like,” and so on. These are truly excuses for sin. This avoidance of corporate prayer betrays egotism and, if you will, Protestantism. Why? Because wherever prayer lacks an ecclesiological foundation, there will certainly be a mistaken understanding of salvation. Each person imagines that his salvation is a private matter. We must learn this well: our salvation is not a private matter; it is a matter of the Church. I am not saved alone. I am saved with the Church and in the Church—with the Church and in the Church. In the same way, as I was saying, I am saved
through Christ and in Christ, because the Body of Christ is the Church. The expression, manifestation, and visible presence of this Church is the assembly: common, corporate prayer and corporate worship. That is why it is forbidden to celebrate the Divine Liturgy with only one person present. You know these things; I have told you before, but I shall repeat them so that they may become firmly established. A priest cannot say, “I will celebrate the Divine Liturgy by myself.” That is forbidden, because the essential element of the Church is absent. And never say, “We are going to have a private Divine Liturgy,” as though your salvation were a private affair—a private matter.
You use the word “private.” First of all, that is a contradiction, because “liturgy” means a public work. When you say, “We shall hold a private public work,” that is an oxymoron, a contradiction. It means “a private public work.” A work is either private or public. Never say such a thing. Can you arrange for a Divine Liturgy to be celebrated? Then do so. Five, ten, or fifty women may say, “We shall arrange for a Divine Liturgy.” But never call it “private.” Never. Nor should you say, “We are having a Divine Liturgy,” or “This Divine Liturgy belongs to us.” Never say that. And if a Divine Liturgy is already being celebrated in that church at the request of others, do not say, “We too shall contribute money so that our own Divine Liturgy will count as well.” For God’s sake, what sort of things are these? Nor should you say, “We shall lock the door because we want the Divine Liturgy for ourselves.” That is Protestantism. We must not forget the character of divine worship. It is
liturgy—a public work. The word comes from leitos and ergon: leitos means “public,” and ergon means “work.” It is the work of the whole Church. It is not your own work or your own affair; it is the concern of the whole Church. And the priest does not serve private interests, but the interests of the Church. Once, twenty years ago, many of us celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Saint Athanasios, near Saint Nicholas—the little church of Saint Athanasios. When we finished that morning, a neighbor from across the road asked, “Did you have a Divine Liturgy?” We said, “Yes.” “What a pity—we did not know. But were we allowed to come?” Someone replied, “Why would you not be allowed?” “Oh, so we were allowed to come?” You see?
People imagine that others are having a private Divine Liturgy and that they themselves cannot enter the church. Such notions must disappear, and they will disappear when we learn what the Divine Liturgy truly means. In other words, we must approach the matter ecclesiologically.
Let us conclude with a beautiful exhortation from John Chrysostom on this point.
Scripture, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse, the Apostle, the Annunciation, the Annunciation, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Second Coming, Diadochos of Photike, the Annunciation, the Annunciation... without one replacing the other. Prayer does not possess such power, he says, as it does when it is offered together with the members of the household of faith—when the whole Body of the Church, the whole Body of the Church, with one accord
sends up its supplication with one voice, with one voice, “with the priests present and offering the prayers of the whole multitude,” raising them to God—that is, presenting to God the prayers of all the people. It is truly something majestic, my dear friends, when we have a living, praying Church. So much, then, for corporate prayer and, as I told you...

Να σας ερωτήσω: προσεύχεστε για τα παιδιά σας, για τον άνδρα σας; Θα πείτε: «Τη μητέρα σας, τον πατέρα σας;» Ναι. Για τη γειτονιά σας προσεύχεστε; Ρωτήστε η κάθε μία, παρακαλώ, τον εαυτόν σας. Έχω προσευχηθεί για τη γειτονιά μου; Έχω προσευχηθεί για τον φούρναρη, τον μπακάλη της γειτονιάς μου, αν υποτεθεί ότι έχω αντιληφθεί να υπάρχουν στους ανθρώπους αυτούς προβλήματα; Έχω προσευχηθεί διά την πόλη στην οποία κατοικώ; Εκείνο το «Κύριε, ρύσαι μας από λοιμού, λιμού, σεισμού, καταποντισμού, πυρός, μαχαίρας, επιδρομής αλλοφύλων» και λοιπά. Κάτι που αφορά πλέον εις αυτήν την κοινή ζωή μας, διότι αν πέσει θανατικό στην πόλη, εσύ θα γλιτώσεις; Αν πέσει πείνα, εσύ θα χορταίνεις;
λειτουργία, δημόσιο έργο. Λείτος και έργον. Λείτος θα πει δημόσιος. Δημόσιο έργο. Είναι έργο ολοκλήρου της Εκκλησίας. Δεν είναι δικό σου έργο, δεν είναι δική σου δουλειά, είναι υπόθεση ολοκλήρου της Εκκλησίας. Και ο ιερεύς δεν εξυπηρετεί ιδιωτικά συμφέροντα, αλλά της Εκκλησίας τα συμφέροντα. Κάποτε, είκοσι χρόνια, είχαμε κάνει μια λειτουργία, πολλοί άνθρωποι, στον Άγιο Αθανάσιο κοντά στον Άγιο Νικόλαο, τον μικρόν Άγιο Αθανάσιο. Όταν τελειώσαμε το πρωί, ένας απέναντι γείτονας λέει: «Είχατε λειτουργία;». Του λέμε: «Ναι». «Κρίμα, δεν το ξέραμε. Αλλά επιτρεπόταν να έρθουμε;». Λέει: «Γιατί δεν επιτρέπεται;». «Α, επιτρεπόταν να έρθουμε;». Βλέπετε;
