Summary

Faith opens the spiritual path, hope extends it, love and humility secure it, and prayer becomes the ascent toward God. The intercessions of Abraham and Moses, Jacob’s struggle, and Paul the Simple’s persistence show that God lovingly allows Himself to be overcome by prayer. As the fourth theological virtue and source of all virtues and gifts, prayer requires willing effort directed toward God and gradually becomes humanity’s principal work.

Love and humility, which we have spoken about up to now, are the sure path to God. Prayer, which we shall discuss today and in the talks to come, is the path of this life. For faith is truly the gateway to the path; it is the beginning. Hope is the continuation of this path. Love and humility are the necessary conditions for this journey. And finally, prayer is the journey itself; it is the ascent toward God. Saint John of Damascus says—and Saint Nilus the Ascetic says the same—that prayer is an ascent toward God. What, then, is prayer? Prayer is an ascent. It is as though the human person becomes a traveler upon the road opened by the preceding virtues and ascends toward Heaven. So what is prayer? Many answers encompass the virtue of prayer. Prayer is indeed a virtue, as we shall see a little later. John Climacus says:

“Prayer, by its quality, is communion and union between man and God; by its effects, it sustains the world.” He then gives a whole series of descriptions of the effects of prayer, which we shall examine a little later. Here we see John Climacus distinguishing between the quality of prayer and its effects. By “quality,” he means the essence and actual reality of prayer—what prayer truly is. By the “effects” of prayer, he means its results: what prayer brings about, what it gives, and what it produces. First, then, we shall consider the quality of prayer—that is, the essence of prayer. He says that it is communion

and union between man and God. To be with God and to be united with God: this is prayer. This is the essence of prayer. Clement of Alexandria says—and I shall give you several teachings before we draw from them a conclusion about the true essence of prayer—“Prayer is conversation with God.” Here, conversation means fellowship and companionship. Prayer, therefore, is the fellowship of the human person with God. John Chrysostom says, “Prayer is communion and union with God.” This is the same as John Climacus says. It is communion—which also means fellowship—communion and union with God.

Asterius of Amasea says, “It is the dialogue of the rational living creature with the true Word.” Dialogue means conversation. The rational living creature is the human person. Do not take the word “creature” in a negative sense. Today, if we call someone an animal, it is insulting and has a negative meaning. But originally the word did not have a negative meaning. What is the human person? He is called a rational living creature. Notice: a rational living creature, and so on. In other words, something that lives. That is what “living creature” means. So do not let your mind give it a negative meaning. Prayer, then, is the dialogue of the rational living creature—that is, the human person—with the true Word (Logos), who is...

the Son and Word (Logos) of God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. It is a departure toward Heaven: one leaves this place and goes there, noetically, of course. It is contempt for present things: leaving present things behind and not giving them too much importance. It is familiarity with the things to come: becoming acquainted with and drawing near to future realities. Saint Gregory of Nyssa tells us that prayer is “conversation with God, fellowship with God.” It is “theoria of invisible things,” the divine vision of things that cannot be seen, and “the fulfillment of things desired.” Here, fulfillment means satisfaction, fullness—bringing something to its fullness. Therefore, it means satisfaction.

You desire many things, and this is why people remain dissatisfied deep within. What always satisfies the soul is prayer, because prayer is, so to speak, the channel or conduit that brings heavenly blessings to the human person. Prayer is equality of honor with the angels. In other words, when you pray, you share the same honor as the angels, because the angels pray. How do they pray? John Chrysostom puts it this way: “Prayer is the language of the angels.” Prayer—when we say “the prayer,” we mean prayer itself; they are the same—is the language of the angels, because the angels are always praying. “For prayer is the work of the angels,” because prayer is their work. So what is the essence of prayer? From these words, we see

that the teachings of the Fathers of our Church show prayer to be dialogue, communion, and union with God. This is a progressive journey. The first step is dialogue: to converse, to speak. Picture two persons: one speaks and the other listens; one is here and the other is somewhere far away. So you immediately begin to speak. That is the first step. The second is communion—that is, fellowship, drawing near. And the third step is union: to become united. Prayer follows this progressive journey and, if you wish, prayer is precisely conversation,

fellowship, and union with God. This is prayer. You may ask me, “Do we experience our prayer in this way?” I must tell you that I am afraid we may never have prayed properly. Never. Pay attention: perhaps. Perhaps never. Yes, it may have happened on occasion—not many times, but a few times—that there was a flash during our prayer, something that caused us to rise from prayer feeling fulfilled. Yet often that something may not have been entirely genuine; or, if it was genuine, it was very slight—very slight indeed. As I told you, I am afraid that perhaps we have not prayed to God properly even once. Perhaps.

At least I can say this: I am afraid that I myself have never prayed. I fear this. For if we read in the Fathers of the Church what prayer truly is—read what Saint Isaac the Syrian says about prayer, or Saint Symeon the New Theologian—you will be shaken. You truly will be shaken. My dear ones, do you know what it means for someone to begin praying sometime in the afternoon, for night to fall, dawn to come, evening to return, and still to be praying? Why? Because he has been completely absorbed in prayer. Do you know what it means—as you may have read in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers—for a snake to come and bite the person praying on the foot

and for him to pay no attention at all to the snake biting him? Here in the church, if something falls, if a lamp bursts and makes a noise, people imagine that something has happened, that a fire has started, or who knows what. Then it is, “You trample me, and I trample you,” as everyone rushes to get out of the church. This is why I told you that I am afraid we may never have prayed. It is something that should shake us deeply. Perhaps I have never prayed in my life. I fear that.

Since prayer means conversation, fellowship, and union with God—you see the progression—then, as we shall discuss in a later talk, prayer is the best and indeed the only path to union with God. It is the path of Christian mysticism. I wonder whether there will be time to speak about it, and I am filled with awe before the subject of Christian mysticism—so much awe that I have considered, though I have not yet decided, saying nothing to you about it. For I ask myself, “What can I tell you? What can I tell you?” Because if we ever learn what Christianity truly is, then we shall be shaken.

The saints who tasted it preferred death—even martyrdom—rather than abandon Christ. This is fundamental testimony that Christianity is something of infinite worth, because it is a truth. It is the truth. We have the living God. Our God is not false; He is the true God. And He is not merely one god among others; He is God, the one and only God. There are no other gods. This is why God’s name is the Lord, as He revealed to Moses, which we discuss in our Sunday talks. It is no small thing for a person to understand that God is one and that He is the Lord, when even in the twentieth century, in Christian lands, there are people who may accept and believe in other gods.

This is the essence of prayer. We can even say that, for our first-created ancestors, this fellowship with God was an ordinary reality. The expression that God walked in Paradise reveals the intimacy between the human person and God. We shall examine this a little later and return to it. We may now continue by asking: What are the effects of prayer? If prayer is this union with God, what does it bring about? John Climacus lists many of its effects, and these will probably form the main subject of our talk today. He says that prayer sustains the world.

Prayer enables the world to continue in existence, because, on account of its sins, the world would have no reason to remain if there were no people who prayed.

Remember! Remember God’s decision to destroy Sodom and the whole surrounding region of the five cities. What role did Abraham’s prayer play? “Lord, if there are fifty righteous people, will You destroy the cities? What if there are forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty, or ten?” Abraham stopped there. The cities would not have been destroyed if there had been ten people—if there had been ten people who prayed, the city would not have been destroyed. But

Abraham was one man outside the cities, and he stopped at ten. In the end, the cities were destroyed. Aristides the Apologist says that what sustains the world is the presence of Christians who pray. Let me also remind you of Moses. God became so angry with His people, who were so rough, stiff-necked, and ungrateful, that He intended to destroy them, as He had done in the days of Noah’s contemporaries.

God made an exception for Noah and said that He would raise up a new generation from him, which indeed happened. Now He says the same thing to Moses: “I will destroy them and raise up a new people from you.” But Moses says, “Do not do this. I beg You. If You do it, I do not want You to make a new people from me. Destroy me together with them.” Through this deeply moving prayer of Moses, God did not destroy the Israelites in the wilderness. Indeed, you should know that God allows Himself to be overcome by prayer, and He loves to be overcome by prayer. This makes a profound impression on us, especially when Moses presents God with the following argument. It truly astonishes us that God accepts arguments from human beings and allows Himself to be persuaded by human reasoning. Yet I must tell you that God Himself permits matters to unfold in this way so that He may be overcome. He does it deliberately.

God loves to be overcome by human beings in prayer. What did Moses say? “Lord, if You destroy the people, the neighboring nations—who were filled with fear at Your presence when You worked the miracle of bringing them through the Red Sea—and the Egyptians as well, will say, ‘God hated them and led them into the wilderness to put them to death.’ And this will not be to Your glory.” We might call this the argument, “It is not in Your interest.” And God was “persuaded,” in quotation marks. God also revealed this through that marvelous struggle He had with Jacob. Jacob had a dream. When Jacob was returning to his homeland, now possessing his goods and property and everything else, he saw God in his sleep and said to Him, “Bless me.”

Of course, he must have seen God in human form, because God cannot be seen. He said to Him, “Bless me.” “No,” He replied, “I will not bless you, because it is already late and I must leave.” Jacob answered, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.” “Let Me go.” But Jacob took hold of God and said, “You will not leave unless You bless me.” Then a struggle began between God and Jacob. God struggled to leave, while Jacob refused to let Him go. They wrestled, the account says, until morning.

Of course, this took place in his sleep. It is like what we sometimes say: “I wrestled with a dream until morning.” He wrestled and wrestled. Finally, God said, “Very well, I will bless you. Let Me go, and I will bless you.” And He blessed him. He also gave him the name Israel, which means “beloved.” Jacob was his first name, while Israel was, so to speak, an additional name; and from him came the Israelites. Thus, it means “beloved.” And as a sign that God had visited him, God touched him on the thigh in such a way that, when Jacob arose in the morning, his thigh was in pain. It hurt greatly; he limped and could not walk properly because of his struggle with God, in which he had overcome God. It is said of the monk Saint Paul the Simple that even Saint Anthony the Great held him in high esteem.

Many times, Saint Anthony would send people possessed by demons to Paul the Simple so that he might heal them. Once, a man possessed by a demon was brought to him—a relative of those who brought him—and they begged Venerable Paul to cast out the demon. The demon would not leave, and the Saint prayed beneath the scorching sun of the African desert, imploring God to drive the demon out of the man. “I beg You, Lord, drive out the devil.” But the devil would not leave. Nothing happened. Then Venerable Paul said, “I will not rise from this place; I will not leave here unless the devil leaves this man.” And immediately the devil departed.

This is the struggle of the human person with God: that the person might overcome God, while God allows Himself to be overcome, because He loves to be overcome through prayer. Such is the great power of prayer. It is truly astonishing. And so, my beloved, prayer sustains the world; it reconciles humanity with God. It is the mother of tears and, in turn, their daughter, because prayer gives birth to tears. Many times we begin to pray, and as the prayer progresses, tears arise. But how many times, too, when we weep over something, do those tears move us to go and pray?

Prayer, then, is the mother of tears, but at the same time it is also the daughter of tears. It is atonement for sins. Those who have learned to pray and ask forgiveness for their sins are forgiven by God. Prayer is a bridge over temptations.

It is the bridge over temptations. It is as though someone were trapped on an island, in a place with no way out; and that is what temptations are like when they surround a person. The way out—the bridge by which one crosses to another place and is saved—is prayer. And against tribulations!

A dividing wall.

Prayer is the dividing wall against hardships, tribulations, and difficulties. That is what “dividing wall” means. In other words, prayer rises before a person and protects him from all the unpleasant things that come to surround him. It is the crushing of warfare. Do you want victory in the war against the passions and temptations? Pray. Prayer is our heavy artillery, which truly crushes the enemy. It is the work of angels. What is the work of the angels? The angels have many tasks. They are also sent for our salvation, to minister to us in the work of salvation. The Apostle Paul tells us in Hebrews that the angels are ministering spirits.

“Sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation.” They are sent for us human beings, to minister to us in the work of our salvation. But one of the principal works of the angels is prayer. What is the content of the angels’ prayer? I do not know whether it consists of more than one thing. But we do know one thing: it is the glorification of God. This is the principal work of the angels. Remember that the Cherubim and the Seraphim continually sing hymns to God. We know the angelic hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth; heaven and earth are full of His glory.”

Prayer is the food of all the bodiless powers—the food of every bodiless being. The angels are nourished by prayer. At first, saying that they are nourished by prayer may seem a little strange; or at least it seems less strange if we take it as a metaphor. If we accept that prayer is called the food of angels in a metaphorical sense, I would say that it is also food for human beings. For human beings as well. But it is not metaphorical; it is real. Pay attention. The angels are immaterial; they are spirits. Therefore, they have no need of material food, at least not as we need it for our bodies. Yet spirits also need nourishment.

The difference is that their food is not like the food we eat. Their food is prayer, and therefore prayer truly is nourishment. Of course, the angels now cannot fall—not because they are immutable, but because they have experienced what is good, because they have tasted God and have acquired the taste of God. For this reason, they do not want to fall. They do not want to. They are capable of falling. An angel could say, “Now I want to fall,” and he would be able to fall. God alone is immutable, that is, unchanging. He is not subject to alteration, change, or transformation. An angel, however, is subject to change. Every created being is mutable. Yet although an angel’s nature is mutable, what keeps him from falling...

from dying spiritually—for the demons died spiritually—is the nourishment he receives. And that nourishment is prayer. It is prayer. Prayer will also be the food of the saints in Paradise. Only it will not be prayer as we know it today. Rather, it will be a...

continual glorification of God, which will be nothing other than the sustaining of the saints in holiness. A saint in the Kingdom of God is capable of changing and falling, because he is mutable; yet he cannot fall, because he will never desire to. It would be like telling someone surrounded by all the good things of the earth, “I am going to die of hunger.”

Imagine him actually doing that—dying of hunger. Only a madman would do such a thing. No one in his right mind would take his own life. The saints in heaven would never desire anything of the kind. Therefore, their nourishment will be theoria, the divine vision of God, and also the glorification of God. Prayer is also the joy of the age to come. It opens before you, so to speak, the vision of the good things to come, and you rejoice in what you will one day taste—what, even now in this life, you already taste as a foretaste of the good things of heaven. Prayer is boundless work. John Climacus notes several things about the effects of prayer that make a deep impression on us.

Consider the phrase “boundless work.” I have spoken to you about this before. And when I so often repeat, “as I said before,” it is to make clear that I know I have already told you, lest you say, “He is telling us the same things again.” I repeat them as a reminder.

What is the work of the human person? What is it? Is it to be born, begin working, and study? What is a person meant to do? My beloved, this is not the true work of the human person. These things are secondary; they enable a person to support himself and remain alive.

He eats and works, but only so that, as I told you, he may remain alive biologically.

The principal work of the human person is something else. We can say that in monasticism this begins—or at least, yes, begins—to become a reality. A monk divides his time among three things, as Saint Isaac the Syrian also says: prayer, study, and manual labor. These three form a complete cycle that must be repeated continually. Saint Isaac says: “Have you grown tired of praying? Take up your study. Have you grown tired of studying? Take up manual labor.” In other words, begin digging, making something, working with your hands. Labor. Of course, this does not mean that while I am working I will not pray, because within labor...

there is reflection on what we have studied; within study there is the remembrance of prayer; and within labor there is reflection on what we have studied, while we continue to pray. Each is present within the others. Nevertheless, at any given moment, one of the three will be the principal task: at this moment I am working, or at this moment I am praying, or I am studying. As the spiritual life advances, imagine an equiangular, equilateral triangle whose three sides are these three elements. That triangle gradually becomes isosceles, because one of its sides continually grows shorter—continually! And what does that mean? Manual labor becomes less and less.

More time is devoted to study and prayer. More time is given to that boundless work called prayer, to the principal work that a person begins to understand is the only thing truly worthwhile. But to recognize its worth, one must begin to acquire some spiritual experience, some taste of spiritual things. Then one will value prayer. Otherwise, prayer tires us; we grow bored and sleepy because we have not acquired this taste of God within prayer. John Climacus then says that prayer is the source of the virtues—the source of the virtues.

When we say that prayer is the source of the virtues, we must certainly understand that prayer itself is also a virtue, because one kind of thing cannot be born from something of a different kind. A cat cannot give birth to a puppy. In the same way, that which gives birth to virtues cannot itself fail to be a virtue. A virtue! Have you ever considered that prayer is a virtue? This is what I mentioned earlier and said we would examine later: that prayer is a virtue. I told you that many answers are needed to encompass the virtue of prayer. Why is prayer a virtue? Did you know that prayer is a virtue? We say, “This person possesses the virtue of faith.”

In the same way, we could say that he possesses the virtue of prayer. Indeed, there are not three theological virtues, but four. The theological virtues are four: faith, hope, love, and, fourth, prayer. In fact, to follow a better order, I should have spoken to you about prayer before humility. For practical reasons, I changed the order. Prayer is the fourth and final theological virtue. And why is it a theological virtue? Because it is directed toward God—indeed, more directly than all the others. Faith, after all, is simply, “I believe in God.” But prayer is direct communion with God. Why, then, is it a virtue?

When we speak of virtue, what do we mean? The defining mark of virtue is this: a work directed toward God and undertaken by free choice. Every work freely chosen and directed toward God is a virtue. Notice that there are three elements. First, we speak of work, of labor, and therefore of effort. Prayer is labor; indeed, it is labor above all else.

Labor above all else.

Second, this labor must be directed toward God; it must be addressed to God. I may labor to commit other evils, but that does not make such labor a virtue. Or the work may not be evil, yet may not be directed toward God. That is not virtue either.

For example, suppose I am a merchant or a laborer and work hard. That does not mean my work is a virtue, because it is not directed toward God. The second element, therefore, is that the labor I undertake must be directed toward God. And the third element is this: receiving the grace of God is not enough for me to accomplish it. I too must offer my free choice—my free and willing assent. I must desire it, because something ceases to be a virtue if it is done under compulsion. This is why the Apostle says to the Corinthians, concerning their gift for the poor in Jerusalem, that they should offer it “not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” God, he says, loves the person who gives something, who does something

cheerfully and with joy, because he freely desires to do it. That is what a cheerful giver means: someone who rejoices because he acts freely and not under compulsion. These, then, are the elements: labor; labor in God and directed toward God; and labor in God, directed toward God, and undertaken by free choice—by the human person’s own will. This constitutes virtue. All three elements are present in prayer. They are all present in prayer. This, then, is why prayer is a virtue. Indeed, as Saint John Climacus says, it is the source of the virtues and the procurer of spiritual gifts. Do you desire spiritual gifts? You may remember that we discussed them in an earlier talk.

Anyone who wishes to receive spiritual gifts must truly desire them. As we have said, when we are baptized, the Spirit of God comes to give us His gifts. Yet He gives them only when we too stretch out our hand to receive them. To stretch out my hand toward the Spirit of God means nothing other than to speak the language of prayer. I begin to say, “Lord, give me wisdom; give me understanding; give me love; give me faith. Give me whatever Your love desires and judges able to help me ascend, to come to know You, to experience You, and to behold Your face.” All these things are offered as gifts from God in response to our asking—that is, through prayer. Prayer, then, is the procurer of spiritual gifts. It is unseen spiritual progress.

Unseen spiritual progress. Do you want to know whether someone prays? You will see it in whether he advances in the spiritual life. Is he advancing spiritually? Then he prays. What is happening here? One thing is visible, while the other is not. Prayer is unseen. Whether someone prays or does not pray cannot be seen, but his spiritual progress can be seen. It is just like this: can I know how much money another person has in his wallet? I cannot. How can I tell whether he has money? If he builds houses and buys fields. When I see him building houses, buying fields, and opening shops, what will I say? “This man has money.” The money itself is unseen, but what he purchases with it can be seen. So it is here as well.

Prayer is unseen, but the progress that comes from prayer is visible. It is perfectly obvious. Spiritual progress cannot be hidden. Prayer is the food of the soul, though we examined this earlier when speaking about the food of the angels. Prayer is the illumination of the nous, the spiritual intellect. How often, when we face some need, do we ask God to illumine us and show us what we should do? What should we do? Prayer is what will illumine the nous. Yet this does not concern only some particular need. My dear friends, let us learn to pray not only for our needs, but because our nous continually needs illumination. Understanding and illumination of the nous are not required only for matters of everyday life.

Above all, they are needed so that we may understand His word. When we study Holy Scripture, let us ask for illumination of the nous. When our nous is occupied with God, let us ask Him to illumine it, so that this attention of the nous may bear fruit. Prayer is the axe that cuts down despair. Are you in despair, at a loss, not knowing what to do? Pray. Prayer will behead despair, and through prayer you will rise again with new courage. Do you know how many people have been saved even from suicide because, at the last moment, they were illumined to pray? Indeed, it would be unthinkable for someone who had decided to take his own life, for example, to pray beforehand.

Quite simply, if he prayed, he would be saved and would never take his own life. The two things cannot coexist. Prayer and suicide cannot go together. Prayer is proof of hope, because by praying you show that you hope. It is the dissolution of sorrow: prayer dissolves sorrow. We know that when confronted by some event, a person may suffer a disintegration of the personality and a breaking apart of the powers of the soul. And not only a breaking apart, but sometimes even a conflict: my nous may tell me that I must act in one way,

while my heart tells me, “You must not act that way,” and the nous and the heart come into conflict. My dear friends, this is something that can happen to us very often. Prayer restores the unity of the person; that is, it brings the powers of the soul—the intellect, the emotions, and the will—back into harmony and cooperation. Without examining each phrase, prayer is the wealth of monks, the treasure of hesychasts, and the lessening of anger. Do you wish to lessen your anger, if you are prone to anger? There is one answer: learn to pray.

At that very moment, when anger seizes you, pray: “My God, guard me. Do not let me lose control or do this or that.” At once the anger subsides and diminishes. Even if it is not eliminated, it is at least weakened until it becomes powerless to do evil. Prayer is a mirror of spiritual progress, as we said earlier when we called it the manifestation of progress. It is a disclosure of one’s condition, revealing the good state within. It is a revelation of things to come. A revelation. Prayer leads to the revelation of future things. No prophet was ever a person who did not pray. Ordinarily, prophecies were given, the prophetic gift was received, and

prophetic revelations came within the realm of prayer. Finally, for the person who has truly learned to pray, prayer is a tribunal, a judgment seat, and the judgment seat of the Lord before the judgment seat to come. What does this mean? Yesterday we commemorated the Second Coming of Christ and heard the Gospel of the impartial Judge, of the dread judgment seat of the Lord, who as Judge will then judge us all. If you repent, weep, and lament at that time, what benefit will it bring? There will no longer be any benefit, because it will no longer be the time for metanoia, for repentance, but the time for recompense and judgment. Prayer,

tears, metanoia, and contrition bring us before the throne, before Christ’s judgment seat, even before that tribunal is established. For what happens? You have sinned, fallen away, acted without reason, and displeased the Lord. So you hasten to Him, fall to your knees, weep, lament, mourn, beat your breast, and beg God to have mercy on you. What does it mean for Him to have mercy on you? It means that He grants you mercy and does not condemn you then. What, therefore, is prayer? Prayer, he says, is a tribunal, a judgment seat, and the judgment seat of the Lord before the judgment seat to come—before that future tribunal. Through prayer you are finally reconciled with God, and then, for you, He will not be a dread Judge, but a friend and a loving Father. My dear friends, prayer has as its supreme example the incarnate Word (Logos).

Christ stands before us as the example of prayer. As the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews, “In the days of His flesh”—that is, while He was in this world—

listen carefully—“He offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to Him who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.” Listen to these expressions of prayer: prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears. Is our prayer of this quality? We shall examine in a future talk whether it is of this quality.

Christ prayed in this world and became for us the example of prayer. The Lord entered the world through prayer and departed from it through prayer. How did He enter through prayer? Again in Hebrews it says, “When the Son came into the world, He said, ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.’” “Behold, I have come, O God, to do Your will.” We see, then, that as He enters the world, He prays, even as He prepares to undertake His work of redemption upon the earth. After He was baptized, He immediately left the Jordan and went deep into the wilderness.

There He remained for forty days, fasting and praying. What was He praying for? He was praying for the work He was about to undertake: our salvation. And as the Lord was departing from this world, He prayed as well. Before the Crucifixion, He prayed fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane. Upon the Cross, His words were themselves a prayer. And His final act on earth as a mortal man—for after His Resurrection He is no longer mortal in His humanity—was to say, “Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit.” “I place My spirit into Your hands.” Every act, then, every movement of the Lord—

whether a miracle, a teaching, or the meal He shared with the five thousand—was always sealed with prayer. Everything was done through prayer. We could say that the whole life of our Lord—His entire life, the Lord in His whole being—was a living and unceasing prayer. The words, “He continued all night in prayer to God,” show us how the Lord lived. The Lord gave us the essence of prayer. He gave us its content and its purpose. He showed us the manner of prayer, the time for prayer, and also the place of prayer. We shall, of course, examine these things in the talks to come.

Truly, the Lord is the supreme example of prayer.

But our time is up. There was one more thing I wanted to tell you. Never mind; let us stop here, because some of the ladies need to go to the Philoptochos Society of the Forty Holy Martyrs, and they must be there by six fifteen. So we shall stop here and continue, God willing, the Monday after next. Next Monday is Clean Monday. Obviously, there will be no talk, no confession—nothing. We shall meet again two weeks from today. As you know, the season of Great Lent is upon us once more. So, especially in view of Great Lent, I would ask that we hold these gatherings more frequently, since this subject can help us during the Lenten season, so that, my dear friends, we may become more spiritual people.

Θα λέγαμε εξίσου ότι έχει και την αρετή της προσευχής. Και μάλιστα, οι θεολογικές αρετές δεν είναι τρεις, αλλά είναι τέσσερις. Οι θεολογικές αρετές είναι τέσσερις. Είναι η πίστης, είναι η ελπίς, είναι η αγάπη και τετάρτη είναι η προσευχή. Μάλιστα, για να είχα μια καλύτερη σειρά, έπρεπε πρώτα να σας αναφέρω την προσευχή και μετά την ταπείνωση. Για λόγους τεχνικούς άλλαξα τη σειρά. Η προσευχή αποτελεί την τετάρτη και τελευταία θεολογική αρετή. Και γιατί είναι θεολογική αρετή; Διότι αναφέρεται εις τον Θεό. Και μάλιστα κατεξοχήν, διότι επιτέλους η πίστης είναι απλώς «πιστεύω εις τον Θεό». Αλλά η προσευχή είναι μια άμεσος επικοινωνία με τον Θεό. Γιατί όμως αποτελεί αρετή;
