Summary
Holy Communion is presented as a source of light, life, spiritual progress, and apatheia, the flowering of practical virtue from which love arises. Prayer, fasting, vigils, and other ascetic disciplines are necessary means rather than final ends, because Christian life ultimately seeks the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, love, union with God, and theosis. Paul’s labor until Christ is formed within believers shows that spiritual birth is an ongoing pastoral and personal process rather than a completed religious achievement.

They are glorified. We say this as we prepare to receive Holy Communion, when we make ready from the evening before: receiving the Body and Blood of Christ is a source of every good thing. For me, then, it is light and life and apatheia—freedom from the passions—and it becomes the occasion and the cause of greater spiritual progress. So what do we see? We see that Holy Communion leads to apatheia. In other words, one of the fruits of frequent Holy Communion is apatheia. But what exactly is apatheia?
That is precisely what we shall examine as we continue with today’s final topic on the meaning of spiritual life. I call it final only in the sense that it completes our introduction to spiritual life, because the topics that follow will deal with its individual aspects, though naturally we shall not exhaust them either. Evagrius Ponticus describes apatheia as the flower of the practical life, and love as the offspring of apatheia. He says characteristically, “Love is the offspring of apatheia.” And again, “Apatheia is the flower of praxis, the active ascetic life.”
Apatheia is the flower of practical virtue, of praxis, the active ascetic life. Indeed, we may say that all our struggle is concentrated upon this one point: how we may acquire this apatheia, from which a person sets out toward very lofty spiritual attainments. It is the state we desire. But what is apatheia? First of all, when we speak of apatheia, we mean freedom from the passions. Of course, we must make it clear that this is not what we commonly call indifference when we say, “That person is apathetic.”
Such a person is indifferent and does not care. His neighbor’s house catches fire, and he enjoys watching it without even taking an interest, running to help, or calling out. That is not apatheia. It is not indifference, but freedom from the passions—the passions are absent. It is the turning of the human soul away from the evil passions toward a godly disposition and delight. Apatheia is this divine passion. It is the divine passion that replaces and causes the passion of the flesh to disappear, and instead of the vices that passion produces, it brings forth a multitude of virtues.
Therefore, apatheia is not only the absence of the passions but also the presence of all the virtues. Apatheia is both a negative and a positive state: negative as the absence of the passions, and positive as the presence of the virtues. Who would not wish to reach it? This is why I told you that apatheia is the desired state we all wish to attain. Yet it is not the final purpose of spiritual life; it is simply a transitional stage. This is why Saint John Climacus says of apatheia that “it has the virtues as its adornment.”
In other words, the virtues are the adornment of apatheia—for that is what the word means here. My dear ones, in order to reach this desired apatheia, a person passes through various stages, phases, or, if you prefer, degrees of apatheia. When someone has begun striving to overcome the passions, we cannot say that he is still at zero; but neither can we say that he has reached the final degree of apatheia. Between these two extremes—the beginning and perfection, perfection insofar as it is humanly possible—there is a progression. According to Saint Maximus the Confessor, there are four stages, four degrees, and they are as follows. The first degree is complete abstinence from evil deeds in action.
Pay close attention here as well. This will help us greatly to see how we can begin, and here we shall finally understand the purpose of these topics. The point is not to memorize all these things, for there are many of them, but to understand that we must never stop. We must free ourselves from the delusion that we have already become spiritually accomplished people. We must be rid of that delusion.
But neither should we say that we are unworthy servants merely as a display of false humility.
We should not say it only to appear humble, but because we have a deep awareness that we are wretched people. The first degree of apatheia, then, is simply to abstain from evil actions—nothing more. It is abstinence from evil deeds in action. This is very important. It is what we mean when we say: I do not steal, I do not slander, I do not act unjustly, I do not strike anyone, I do not insult anyone, and so forth. In other words, outwardly I commit no evil act. This is the first degree of apatheia—but only the first.
How many people—if only they had truly reached even this point—often think that they have reached it and that perfection is found here: “I did not do this; I did not do that; I did not do the other thing.” Ah, perfection is still very far away. You will be astonished when you hear how far it extends. The second degree of apatheia is the complete rejection of inward consent to evil. At the first stage, I do nothing outwardly evil. Suppose someone does me harm and I do not become angry. Pay attention: I do not become angry. I do not fly into a rage or lash out against him. That is the first degree of apatheia. But inwardly I am seething.
I am seething inside. I have logismoi—intrusive thoughts—and I think all manner of things. Yet I do nothing, and nothing shows outwardly. Inside, however, I am boiling in my own skin. Now I proceed to the second degree. The second degree is to cast out this inward condition, to reject these logismoi—in other words, to reject consent to evil thoughts within the mind. I must not consent to them. Pay attention: the thoughts and desires will come and trouble me, but I will say no. This is the second stage: to fortify myself and become able to say no to all these things. Then comes the third stage:
complete immobility of desire in relation to the passions. At this third stage, I no longer have to say no to something troubling me within. Something inside may say, “Take revenge,” and I say no; “Think evil,” and I say no. Evil thoughts of every kind may come to me,
and I may say, “Go away, evil thoughts; I do not want to see you.” But at the third stage, these things are no longer present. Even the temptation itself is absent—nothing at all, not even the temptation. That is the third stage. And the fourth stage is complete purification even from the bare images of the passions.
“Last night I committed this sin.” When someone tells us this, does not our mind immediately form an image of the sin he committed? Well, the fourth stage is for my mind not even to form the image. Pay attention: it is not merely that I do not desire evil, or that I have the strength to say, “Go away,” but that the image does not even enter my mind. It is like a small child, whose mind remains completely untouched when the child sees something evil. Take a two-year-old child and do something evil in front of him. No evil image will enter his mind; he understands nothing of it. This is the fourth degree of spirituality, the fourth degree of apatheia, in a human being. What would you say? Is it easy or difficult? And if, I ask you,
if this lies far beyond us and the road is long, then remember that we are speaking of what is possible for a human being, of human perfection. Yet perhaps everything we have said may create the impression that these things are very distant and very lofty, that we are exceedingly far from them, and perhaps even that they are not meant for people like us. Never say that, my dear ones. Remember what I wanted to tell you: the spiritual life, the life of nepsis or watchfulness, is not only for monks and not only for hermits. It is for every Christian. This is why Saint Gregory the Theologian says—
Saint Gregory Palamas says, “Apatheia is not angelic, but human.” The apatheia possible for human beings, he says, is not the apatheia of the angels; it is human apatheia. Saint John Chrysostom also makes a beautiful observation. In the most recently published volume, volume 53, in his Commentary on the Fourth Psalm, page 172 of this Athens edition, he interprets this verse from the Fourth Psalm: “For You alone, O Lord, have made me dwell in hope.” “What does ‘alone’ mean?” he asks. What does the Psalm mean when it says that I dwell alone?
He answers, “Separated from evil,” and adds, “Pursuing the desert in the midst of the city.” It means separating yourself from evil things. And do not imagine, he says, that you can achieve this only in some wilderness. Rather, pursue this desert in the midst of the city. Seek this desert and solitude—this separation from evil—in the middle of the city, in the midst of daily life, society, noise, affairs, and responsibilities. But how, notice this, does he say you can achieve it? How is it possible? John Chrysostom says, “If you flee from the evil and pursue the good.” On the one hand, you avoid evil things and evil people,
and on the other hand, you pursue good things and good people. I must tell you that we neither avoid evil things nor keep away from evil people. Strangely enough, we include them in the regular pattern of our lives. Perhaps we are ashamed to tell them to leave or to withdraw from them ourselves; perhaps we gain some advantage from them; or perhaps we want a compromised Christianity, so that we may also retain a little of the world of those who are far from God. Call it whatever you wish. The fact remains that we do not withdraw from the world of the evil. John Chrysostom therefore says that if you truly wish to attain this state of apatheia, you must flee from the evil and also pursue the good.
Here is a beautiful thought: “For in this way you will gain even greater security than those who dwell in the wilderness—not only by fleeing from those who harm you, but also through fellowship with those who benefit you.” You will not only avoid those who cause harm, as people in the desert do; you will also be benefited by those who truly edify you, whom the hermits would not have with them in the desert. Thus, if a person living in the city attains this state, John Chrysostom places him even above the hermits. You see, then, that we can create this desert, this…
this life of apatheia, this freedom from the passions, even amid the noise of daily life and its many sins.
As I said earlier, and also last time, nepsis, or watchfulness, is a method of spiritual life. What is the purpose of the whole outline of spiritual progress that we have presented? Where is it meant to lead? Saint Seraphim of Sarov says that prayer, fasting, vigils, and all Christian ascetic disciplines, excellent though they are in themselves, do not in themselves constitute the purpose of the Christian life. If you isolate any one virtue—prayer, fasting, or vigil—none of these virtues...
could constitute the purpose of the Christian life. They are simply necessary means toward that purpose. For the true purpose of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit through this life in Christ. This is what Saint Hesychios the Sinaite says: when we attain apatheia, freedom from the passions, “through apatheia, love is born.” Through apatheia we attain love. “And he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” The person who possesses this perfect love abides in God, and God abides within him. In other words, the person has attained union with God. This is theosis, divinisation. This is the purpose of the spiritual life. Thank you.
Do not say, “I gave alms, so I am all right.” Never say, “I prayed, so I am all right.” Never say, “I fasted, kept vigil, or went to the Divine Liturgy, so I am all right.” This notion that we are “all right” must disappear from our lives. We must never say it. Instead, we must seek our encounter with God and become a dwelling place for this holy God—and do so with great humility, because otherwise we immediately lose God again.
There is one final point about the spiritual life that we absolutely must consider, because it concerns the very beginning of spiritual life: how spiritual life is born. Notice that we say how it is born, not how it is put into practice. Pay close attention here. I bought this watch; I did not give birth to it. A child is born, whereas an object is manufactured, sold, or bought. In the same way, spiritual life is not something we manufacture; it is something that must be born.
Do not imagine that by taking a few principles and applying them like a doctor’s prescription, you can attain the spiritual life. Spiritual life is not a matter of following a prescription. It is a matter of spiritual life being born within us. And so we come to the question: how is spiritual life born? For Christ Himself says, “Many will seek to enter and will not be able.” Many will seek to enter the Kingdom, to enter the spiritual life, but they will not be able. Why will they not be able? Because they did not begin with the birth of spiritual life. They remained with formulas—that is, with prescriptions...
with the technical side of spiritual life. The technical side is only the scaffolding by which we build our spiritual life; but the scaffolding is not the building itself.
Two wonderful verses from the Ode of Isaiah in the Old Testament will help us understand this. The first verse reads as follows. It comes from the fifth of the nine odes that you can also find in your Horologion. The fourth is the Ode of Habakkuk, the fifth is Isaiah’s, the sixth is Jonah’s, the seventh and eighth are the Odes of the Three Holy Youths, and the ninth is the Ode of the Theotokos. There are nine odes. So the first verse from Isaiah’s Fifth Ode says: “As a woman in labor draws near to give birth and cries out in her labor pains, so have we become toward Your Beloved.”
Just as a pregnant woman approaches childbirth and cries out in her pain, so have we become toward Your Beloved. The second verse says: “Because of Your fear, O Lord, we conceived, we labored, and we gave birth to the spirit of salvation, which we have brought forth upon the earth.” Let me explain it. Because of Your fear, O Lord, Your fear entered within us: “we conceived.” We received Your fear into our womb so that we might give birth. We went into labor and suffered the pain of a woman about to give birth; and then “we gave birth”—we gave birth to the spirit of salvation. This is precisely what we labored to bring forth, “which we have brought forth upon the earth,” what we accomplished on earth. As you can see, both verses speak of birth and include the whole process: conception, pregnancy, labor pains, and birth. This entire process is presented in these two verses as an image of the spiritual life. You can see clearly that it is not a matter of prescriptions, as we said earlier, but of birth. Let us now examine these two verses more closely.
The first verse says that, just as a pregnant woman approaches childbirth and cries out in her pain, so have we become toward Your Beloved. This verse expresses an exceedingly deep and painful longing. Longing, as you know, means that we desire something intensely and at the same time suffer deeply. Anyone who denies this has never truly felt anything in life. Longing always contains these two elements: desire and pain—or, if you prefer, love and pain. The verse speaks of a person: “Your Beloved.” It says that we have become like this. It is a comparison: as with the woman, so it is with us toward Your Beloved. To whom does Isaiah address his ode? He addresses it to God. And who is this Beloved, since Isaiah is speaking to God? He is the person who awakens this longing and pain, none other than the Son of God, Christ. Compare this with the words, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” spoken at the Baptism and on Mount Tabor. Compare the passages. He is therefore God’s Beloved, God Himself. Now, when a person begins to experience God, and especially...
the second person of the Holy Trinity, who begins to enter that person’s life, then the person begins to feel what a pregnant woman feels as she prepares to give birth. The words, “so have we become toward Your Beloved”—that word “so”—draw upon the image of a pregnant woman to express the prophet’s profoundly powerful feelings, and those of every soul that has received Christ within. For this reason, such longing for Christ bursts forth—and this is no exaggeration—in a cry. “She cried out,” the verse says. Just as a woman cries aloud while she is giving birth...
so, it says, have we become. The soul that deeply loves Christ cries out. It truly cries out, though of course this does not mean that the person is mad. A little later, the prophet himself says, “Let me sing to my Beloved a song of my beloved.” I will sing my beloved song to my Beloved—my beloved song to my Beloved. That is what the words mean: “Let me sing to my Beloved a song of my beloved.” The source of this pain is none other than Christ Himself. When Christ enters the heart, He awakens this pain and this longing. This process...
by which Christ is carried within the human heart is accomplished by the Holy Spirit Himself. Listen here to a mystery, a wondrous mystery. This is why I told you that the spiritual life is not merely a collection of counsels. To a certain extent, counsels do have their place. I myself could be telling you these things now while remaining entirely estranged from them, merely offering you advice and being altogether foreign to spiritual life. Yet in the hearts of those listening—perhaps not in every heart—this condition may be born and begin to take shape. Understand this: it is a birth. But if Christ is the one who initiates this within the heart, then the question arises:
What remains for the human person to do? If God Himself initiates the spiritual life within the human soul, what part is left to the person? Is there no personal labor of his own? What becomes of freedom? My dear friends, what remains is a secret, entirely personal and mysterious disposition of the will, which ultimately has the power to say to Christ, “Be born in my soul,” or, “Do not be born in me.” I said that it is secret and strictly personal. I assure you, it is a mystery which...
I may investigate for as many years as I live and never solve. Humanity may investigate it for as long as it exists and never solve it. How can the beginning come from God Himself within the human soul, while at the same time the first decisive word belongs to the person’s good disposition of will? How can this be? You know very well that the first word belongs to the person’s good disposition of will. How does this happen? This is precisely why I called it secret and mysterious. Look at the thief on the cross: at the very last moment he comes to metanoia, to repentance—and what profound repentance it is! Yet Judas, though called to be a disciple, rejects Christ. The Pharisees are educated and know the Law very well, yet they reject Him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes, whom the Pharisees excluded as people who could never be saved, are saved. They accept the preaching of Christ. What takes place within their hearts? It is astonishing. What begins the process, then? The grace of God begins to work within the heart. But if the grace of God begins within the heart, how can it begin without the person’s willing consent? And if the person’s will begins it, how could such a will arise in people who are corrupted? I cannot tell you. It is a mystery. It is a miracle that belongs to God alone. He knows this secret. He alone knows it.
I can say only this: spiritual life is something born within the heart. I can say nothing more.
The second of the two verses from the Prophet Isaiah that I have been explaining now describes this process of spiritual birth—that is, the process of spiritual life. The first verse describes its beginning; the second, its development. Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite gives us a wonderful explanation of this whole subject. He says that the human nous—the spiritual intellect—and the heart resemble a womb, into which the Word (Logos) of God enters as seed. You see that I am speaking in the language of birth: conception and birth.
The human soul and heart receive the seed of the divine Word (Logos). This is why Christ says in the parable, “The sower went out to sow his seed.” You see, the more deeply one enters the spiritual life, the more deeply one sees into the Gospel. Why does this parable compare the divine Word with a seed, with the seed of conception?
Until now, you may not have known why. Other interpretations can certainly be given. I am sure that most of you ladies, if not all of you, may not have known that in this parable the Word (Logos) of God is compared—forgive me—to a seed, to the seed of conception. “The sower went out to sow his seed.” A seed falls into the earth, sprouts, and gives rise to a birth. So it is with the seed of God, the Word (Logos) Himself. Which Word? Christ speaks of the Word of God, but the Word of God is Christ Himself. The Word is not the words written on a sheet of paper or in a book, not the letters printed in the Gospel. He is the living Word Himself—Word with a capital W—who comes like seed and falls into the womb of the human heart. The human heart then carries this seed within itself. There it is conceived; there the seed, the Word, begins to grow and develop; and afterward the hour of birth arrives. This is the whole process of birth, including the labor pains through which one gives birth unto salvation. I will repeat the verses.
“We labored; we conceived.” These are not my words. This is plainly Holy Scripture. “We conceived.” We received Him within our innermost being, within our heart, because this is a spiritual matter. “And we labored”—we suffered pain. Why did we suffer? We shall see shortly. “And we gave birth”—then we brought forth. What did we bring forth? The spirit of salvation. Yes, salvation: the goal of the spiritual life. But let us examine this whole process more fully. When the Word (Logos) of God is sown within the heart, at this very moment as you hear the Word of God, you hear Him in the form of words and sound, but in reality...
The living Word Himself enters your heart. Then fear is conceived within the heart—fear. When you hear a word from God, you will say, “My God, where do I stand?” This fear, of course, has many stages. We may fear a little, more, or very much—very much indeed. When this fear has dwelt in the heart for a long time, then the love of God is conceived. This is why Holy Scripture says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Among the Hebrews, wisdom does not mean a product of the intellect, but the active life, virtue, and holiness. Therefore, the beginning of spiritual life is the fear of God.
The fear of God is also the beginning of this spiritual birth. You remember the outline we gave of the spiritual path according to Saint Hesychios the Sinaite: faith, then fear. Faith leads to fear; fear leads to the keeping of the commandments; and so forth, through apatheia—freedom from the passions—to love. So fear and love, to take these two points now, are like two siblings conceived in the womb of the soul, with the Word of God as their father—that is, the incarnate Word. And this conception will give birth to the spirit of salvation, as we have said. To give you an image of this, the Apostle Paul writes to the Galatians:
“My little children”—not merely “my children,” but “my little children.” He says it tenderly. This word appears only once in the Apostle Paul, whereas it occurs many times in the letters of John the Evangelist. In Paul, it appears only once: “My little children, for whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you.” Here we have two things. First, Paul conceived his pastoral work in his womb—that is, in his inmost being—so that he might give birth to his spiritual children. Indeed, John Chrysostom says that while a woman suffers labor pains once—once...
she suffers, gives birth once, and does not undergo those pains again—Paul says, “I am again in travail.” Why? Because spiritual birth never ends. When a spiritual child is not doing well, that child enters once more into the spiritual womb of the pastor, the spiritual father, and the labor pains begin again. He begins once more to give birth to that person from the beginning, from nothing. This is why he says, “for whom I am again in travail”—I am carrying you once more in spiritual labor. That is the first point. The other point that concerns me is, “until Christ is formed in you.” Let us consider this word “formed”: to form, to be formed.
We use the word in everyday speech: to be formed. What does it mean here? It means to take shape. This verb properly belongs to the case of an embryo. We say, “The embryo is being formed in its mother’s womb.” What does “being formed” mean? It is continually taking shape. If I look at a one-month-old embryo—I do not know whether you have ever seen pictures of an embryo through the stages of the nine months—you will see what it looks like. What is it? Can one yet recognize it as a human being? At two months it has developed further, then at three months, four months, until by the ninth month it is a fully formed human being. My dear friends, the Apostle uses this verb, “to be formed,” saying, as it were, “I am carrying you in spiritual labor.”
Christ has not yet been fully formed within you, and on your behalf I labor as one carrying a child, until Christ is formed within the womb of your own soul. And “is formed” means that little by little you begin to take shape, to be formed in Christ, to become Christlike. As you know, spiritual life is not the miracle of a single hour or even a single day. It unfolds over time. Today we make this much progress, tomorrow more, and the day after still more. You see, then, that the Apostle uses this image of birth through the verb “to be formed,” showing that spiritual life is a matter of inward birth. This is what I want you to understand clearly.
Saint Maximus the Confessor says something very beautiful: “The Word of God, having once been born in the flesh, always desires in His love for mankind to be born spiritually in those who are willing, and He becomes an infant, forming Himself within them through the virtues.” The Word of God, he says—the second Person of the Holy Trinity—once took human flesh and was born. Once. Yet “He always desires to be born spiritually.” He is always being born, always desiring to be born according to the Spirit. “According to the Spirit” means through the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit. I emphasize this: through the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit. Pay attention; I will say something more about this shortly. Through the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit...
He is born, in His love for mankind, within those who are willing. Pay attention: within those who are willing. Here again we see personal free choice. Nothing happens unless a person is willing. Yet it is still God who offers the beginning. Where? How? And if God offers the beginning, the Apostle Paul says that both the willing and the doing begin with God. Then where is our free choice? But let me not return to that subject. “And He becomes an infant.” Christ becomes an infant, “forming Himself within them through the virtues.” He is born within those who are willing, so that He may bring forth virtue—the virtues—within their souls. Just as, my dear friends...
Christ was born of the Virgin through the Holy Spirit, so too the spiritual conception and formation—there, I have now used the word “formation”; forgive me—the formation in Christ, from the verb “to be formed” used by the Apostle Paul, the conception and formation of Christ within the soul, takes place through the Holy Spirit. This is why we speak of spiritual life. Christ is born within the soul through the Holy Spirit; thus we have life in Christ, and it is called spiritual life.
So whether we say “Christian life”—from Christ—or “spiritual life”—from the Holy Spirit—the life is the same, because both Persons of the Holy Trinity take part: the Son and the Spirit of God. Saint Gregory the Theologian famously exclaims, addressing women in one of his homilies: “Christ is born of a Virgin; women, live in virginity, that you may become mothers of Christ.” Christ, he says, was born of a virgin. Therefore, women, live in virginity so that you may become mothers of Christ. How can they become mothers of Christ? Christ was born of the Virgin, but now He is also born within human souls. Therefore, although now...
Christ was born once, He is born many times within human souls. And when Christ is born within the soul, what does the person become? A mother of Christ. Since that person carries Him within, that person becomes a mother of Christ. Now pay close attention: before the Theotokos conceived the Word in His very being—and I mean in His very being—when the angel told her that she would give birth to the Son of God, the Spirit of God overshadowed the Theotokos, and the Word Himself, the whole Word, the essence of God, visited the Theotokos. This is something I cannot comprehend. And she conceived. I will simply leave you with that statement, because we cannot truly comprehend any of it.
Before the Theotokos conceived the Word in His very being, according to His essence, she had already conceived Him spiritually, because her life was such that she had become a vessel and dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and so she was now able to receive Him in His very being as well. And now we come to the question that greatly concerns us: what are the signs of spiritual conception? As you know very well, when a woman becomes pregnant, she knows that she is pregnant. There are signs. Pay attention. Today’s subject, I would say, may speak especially to you women. Yet it is not a women’s subject, because the same matter also concerns men. Spiritual life...
concerns both man and woman, even though the examples are taken from a woman’s experience. That is where the examples come from. I did not invent them. Notice that these examples are used by the Fathers of our Church and by Holy Scripture. They are not mine at all. Indeed, I can say that most of what I am presenting comes from Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite. What concerns us is this: Is there a spiritual pregnancy? Has the Word of God begun to be born within me? How can I know? There are three signs. The first sign is this. I will not explain it at great length, but I want you to understand a great deal: conception and the desire for pleasure.
Forgive me for speaking a little more openly, though not too openly. I want you to understand more clearly. In a woman who has conceived, desire is no longer present. That desire is no longer present. In the same way, carnal desire is absent from the soul that has conceived Christ. When a person begins to have the presence of Christ within, these things pass away; they come to an end. They depart. In other words, carnal desire begins to disappear. Of course, what I am telling you now is not my own teaching; Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite says it. If you were to repeat this outside, among worldly people, they would begin to say that it is simply a man’s incapacity.
They would say, from beginning to end, that it is a lack of ability—that this man is incapable. Yet I must also tell you the opposite. Many times, especially in men, one observes an increase in sexual desire around the age of forty, fifty, or sixty, so that their wives are often puzzled and say, “He was not like this before. Why is he like this now?” Let me tell you why. A person feels that he has life within him because of two things: when he eats well and when he experiences sexual desire. If he feels that he has these two things, he imagines—it is an illusion—that he is truly alive, that he is vigorous and full of life. If he loses his appetite, perhaps through fasting, or loses his...
sexual drive, as may happen through what we are describing now—Christ being born within him—he thinks that he has grown old and that nothing remains for him but to die. The natural man, however—not the spiritual man, but the natural man—is carnal and merely soulish, as the Apostle Paul says, and understands nothing of this. He would never seek such a life. On the contrary, if such a life were ever described to him, he would say that it was a form of incapacity and a distortion of what is natural. The man understands nothing. I hope you understand me. Thus, just as this pleasure-seeking desire is absent in a woman who has conceived and is now carrying her child as the pregnancy advances, so too it becomes absent in the spiritual person.
There is a parallel in the spiritual person. Indeed, you may have noticed that when someone begins to experience spiritual life deeply within, he has no appetite for such things. He does not want them; he simply does not. That desire is absent. But it is not only carnal desire. There are also other desires of the soul, such as the desire for wealth and the desire for glory. When a person begins to desire neither wealth nor glory, and sexual desire also subsides—not because he is old or ill, but because the Word of God has begun to be born within him—this is the first symptom, the first sign of spiritual birth.
Does Christ not speak of spiritual birth in His conversation with Nicodemus? He told him, “Unless one is born from above.” Nicodemus misunderstood and said, “Do you mean that I, an old man, must enter my mother’s womb again?” And Christ said to him, “You are a teacher of the Law, and you do not know this?” You see that Christ also spoke of this spiritual birth. Let us continue. That was the first sign. The second sign of spiritual birth is this: when a woman is pregnant—and Saint Symeon the New Theologian mentions this—she clearly knows it once the pregnancy has advanced to three, four, or five months. How does she know? From the movements of the child within her womb.
The infant, the embryo, moves within the womb. Remember what happened when the Theotokos visited her kinswoman Elizabeth. What did Elizabeth say? “The child leaped in my womb with gladness.” “With gladness” means with joy. The child gave a sudden leap. Who was it? Saint John the Forerunner, in his mother’s womb. When the two mothers met, John, from within his mother’s womb, prophesied concerning Christ, who was in the womb of the Theotokos. He announced Him beforehand and greeted Him, even from the womb. This is precisely why John was a prophet from his mother’s womb—a prophet and an angel. From his mother’s womb...
Holy Scripture says—yes, you know the passage—“The child leaped with gladness in my womb.” So, my dear friends, this movement of the child is a sign to the woman that she is pregnant. In the same way, when Christ begins to be born within a person, there are corresponding movements. What are these movements? They are stirrings, illuminations, and flashes of Christ’s presence. They are powerful experiences within the soul that cannot be described. These things must be lived. And, as Athanasius the Great adds, all these things occur with particular joy at the times of feasts and illuminations, and when receiving the Holy Body and Blood of Christ.
When you receive Holy Communion, when you pray, when some great event takes place—something you feel within yourself—you experience these stirrings of spiritual life. Is this truly so? Do you understand? The third sign is travail: the pain of the nous and the heart. You know that both the nous and the heart have their own reasonings. The heart, for example, loves, falls in love, hates, cares—it speaks. The heart has its own reasons. The nous believes or disbelieves, thinks, rejects, accepts; it too has its own reasons. So the nous and the heart each have their own reasons, you understand. But when the Word of God comes, He encounters these two realms: the nous and the heart. Let us regard them as two realms. What does the Word of God find there? He finds the reasonings of both. What, then, must happen? These personal reasonings of the human heart and nous—the hesitations, the unbelief, the ‘but,’ the ‘why,’ the ‘how,’ and the ‘what’—must be set aside. Then the Word of God can come and dwell within us, spreading and growing like an embryo, until He fills the whole human person. But do you not think that setting aside the reasoning of my nous and the reasoning of my heart, in order to receive something that comes from beyond me—the Word of God—
the Word with a capital W—causes pain? It does cause pain. Suppose, for example, that I love something. What do I love? I love science. God tells me, ‘Set science aside. Go on your way, along the path I will show you; you will become a missionary.’ Yet this tears me apart, because I must leave something I love. I love my mother, my father, my home, my village, my own familiar corner. I must leave them all. When someone said to Christ, ‘Lord, let me first go and bury my father,’ Christ replied, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, and follow Me.’ What does this do to a person? That man’s heart had its reasons. It was his father. His heart had its reasons: ‘But Lord, he is my father.’ ‘Leave these things and come with Me.’ This tears a person apart; it causes pain.
A person must leave behind habits, cherished circumstances, and beloved people—leave all these things within the world—so that the Word of God may be born in his heart. Then he feels this pain, this inner devastation, this drama, this resistance, and this melting of the depths of the heart—this brokenness. I do not know whether you understand me. All this continues until the Word of God is born. And once He is born, the pains depart, just as a woman’s labor pains depart once she has given birth. When the Word of God is born within us, all these things likewise pass away and are no more. Does that mean I will no longer care? I love my mother, but not with the anxious attachment I had before. I love my father—I love them both. I love my home, my village, my homeland, my hearth, my own corner—everything—but not as I did before.
I now see them through a new lens, because Christ has been born within me. My dear friends, our time has passed; please forgive me. I will conclude now. Thank you. The Apostle Paul, wishing to distinguish these degrees of spirituality, speaks of three kinds of people: the natural person, the carnal person, and the spiritual person.
Indeed, he writes to the Corinthians: ‘And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people.’ I could not speak to you as spiritual people, ‘but as to carnal people.’
‘As infants in Christ’—as babies in Christ, as little children.
Here we see who the natural person, the carnal person, and the spiritual person are. The natural person lives according to the flesh, and his nous has not yet been illuminated by the Holy Spirit. He remains guided only by an innate, human understanding. He has no knowledge of Christ, no knowledge of spiritual life—nothing. Such people are also called those who live merely according to nature. When we say, ‘He is a good person’—notice, simply a good person—we mean the innate goodness present in a human being. This is the natural person. Then comes the carnal person. The carnal person has been baptized. You may also find the natural person among the unbaptized, and especially among those who have not been baptized and have no relationship with Christ. The carnal person, however, has been baptized.
He has heard the preaching of Christ, but he has not yet been perfected. Although he has entered upon a spiritual path, his life still contains so many carnal things—a carnal mindset and a carnal way of life. This is why Paul tells the Corinthians, ‘I cannot speak to you as spiritual people. You are still carnal people.’ When you speak to such a person’s nous about lofty things, he responds, ‘What are we going to eat...’

δοξάζονται, το λέμε προκειμένου να κοινωνήσουμε, όταν ετοιμαζόμεθα από βραδύς, ότι δηλαδή η μετάληψη του σώματος και αίματος του Χριστού είναι πηγή αγαθών. Λοιπόν, και για μένα είναι φως και ζωή και απάθεια και ότι γίνεται αφορμή, αιτία να έχω επιδόσεις προκοπής πνευματικοτέρας. Τι βλέπουμε λοιπόν; Λοιπόν, βλέπουμε ότι η Θεία Κοινωνία οδηγεί στην απάθεια. Δηλαδή, ένας καρπός της συχνής Θείας Κοινωνίας είναι και η απάθεια. Αλλά τι ακριβώς είναι η απάθεια;
Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς: «Απάθεια γούν εστίν ουκ αγγέλων, αλλ' ανθρωπίνη». Η απάθεια, λέει, στους ανθρώπους δεν είναι των αγγέλων απάθεια, αλλά είναι ανθρωπίνη η απάθεια. Και πολύ ωραία σημειώνει ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος —έχετε τον τελευταίο τόμο που εξεδόθη, τον 53, τελευταία— στην Ερμηνεία του Τετάρτου Ψαλμού, σελίδα 172 αυτής της εκδόσεως των Αθηνών, λέγει το εξής. Ερμηνεύει σε χωρίο του Δ' Ψαλμού: «Ότι συ, Κύριε, κατά μόνας επ' ελπίδι κατώκισάς με». «Τι εστί το κατά μόνας;» Τι θα πει αυτό που λέγει ο ψαλμός, ότι μένω μόνος μου;
Η ψυχή και η καρδία του ανθρώπου δέχεται το σπέρμα του Θείου Λόγου. Γι' αυτό και λέγει ο Χριστός στην παραβολή: «Ἐξῆλθεν ὁ σπείρων τοῦ σπεῖραι τὸν σπόρον αὐτοῦ». Βλέπετε, όσο πιο πολύ κανείς βαθαίνει στην πνευματική ζωή, τόσο βλέπει το Ευαγγέλιο βαθύτερα και βαθύτερα. Αυτή την παραβολή, γιατί παρομοιάζει τον Λόγο τον Θείο με σπόρο, με σπέρμα;
Σας
