Summary

The lecture defends the ancient Orthodox feast of the Presentation of the Theotokos and urges believers to trust the Church’s tradition over private reasoning. The Temple’s sacred objects—including the manna jar, Aaron’s flowering rod, the tablets of the Law, and the golden censer—are interpreted as prophetic types of the Theotokos bearing the incarnate Word. Christ’s Cross and Resurrection fulfill the promise of Genesis: Satan wounds Christ’s humanity, but the risen Lord crushes the serpent’s head and opens the way to salvation.

The greatest event of these days—of these weeks, that is—is the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, which we Orthodox celebrate on Saturday, the twenty-first of the month. So this evening, with the blessing of our Most Holy Theotokos, I would like to say a few words about this feast. I especially want to do so because, as you know, this feast is misunderstood, and unfortunately some people refuse to accept it. In other words, they presume to correct the Church as well. You know, our Church has celebrated the Entry of our Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple from the most ancient times. Thank you.

People think that they are reasoning logically. Yet it is to a person’s benefit to follow the Church—to place the Church in front and remain behind her. Then he is secure and in no danger. But when he puts himself first and places his own reason first, as Protestantism has done, as Papism has done, and as so many other so-called religions have done, it is a fearful thing. So let me explain this matter to you in a reasonably clear way.

You know, all of this is the work of God’s providence. In Paradise, Satan had received a warning from God: that one day the seed of the woman would crush his head.

We read this in Genesis 3:15, and theologians call it the Protoevangelium—the first good tidings. The Greek word for Gospel is a compound word meaning good tidings. And the good tidings are that the Son of God would one day become the Son of the Virgin, so that man might once again become a son of God. Do you know, in broad terms, why Christ became man? So that man might once again become god by grace. If a person does not grasp this, his life in this world is in vain. You must understand that God became man so that man might become god by grace. This was the warning Satan had received in Paradise.

God says, “The seed of the woman will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.” This referred to Satan’s bringing about Christ’s Crucifixion according to His humanity, raising Christ upon the Cross. And yet we must say that behind the Cross stood the Resurrection, through which Satan’s head would be crushed. Satan kept this firmly in mind. He knew that this Child would not be born of a woman in the natural way, because God had said to him, “The seed of the woman will crush your head.” A woman does not have seed; the seed belongs to the man. Therefore, some extraordinary birth would take place, something strange, and Satan was always watching for it. When the years had passed—about three thousand five hundred years, perhaps four thousand or even more...

Holy Scripture came onto the scene, and Isaiah in particular wrote with perfect clarity: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,” and so forth. Then Satan’s memory was evidently refreshed—if I may speak of him in human terms—that God had not forgotten His original warning. Once again he read that the Virgin would give birth. With this in mind, he sought somehow to spread such corruption that no virgins would remain, so that the woman destined to bear the One who would punish him could not give birth. But God is wiser than the devil. If you read Solomon, in the opening chapters, you will find a passage which says...

It says, “They reasoned, and they were led astray.” Do you understand? That was how they reasoned, but they were deceived. They could not comprehend the mind of God or how God thinks. And when our Most Holy Theotokos appeared—she whom God had beheld from the foundation of the world and had called “the woman” there in Genesis, in the words “the seed of the woman”—that woman was none other than our Most Holy Theotokos. She was the one of whom He spoke. Eve, of course, thought that she herself would give birth to the one who would avenge her against the serpent, Satan. That is why she called her first child Cain, a name interpreted as “acquisition,” believing that she had acquired the avenger. But as you know, what she had acquired was only a murderer. The prophecy concerned another woman, the one unique woman.

She was the Virgin, the Woman—the one who, according to the chronology commonly accepted among us, would come some five thousand five hundred years later. Satan saw all this and took measures to ensure that, when our Christ was about to come into the world, no woman, no virgin, would be found to give birth without a man. But God arranged matters very differently. As you know, while our Most Holy Theotokos was still very young, at three years of age—still an innocent little child, as we say—her parents fulfilled the promise they had made and brought her into the Temple.

“I shall dedicate the child to God, and He may do whatever He wills.” The zeal of Joachim and Anna was unconditional; they imposed no conditions at all. “You give me a child, and I shall offer the child to You. You have given the child to us, and we shall give the child back. What You then choose to do is not our concern.” They were unconcerned about what God might do afterward. There is a work—I do not know whether you ever read it, and I do not recommend that you do, but you may happen to come across it—called the Protoevangelium of James. It contains no doctrinal teaching, but it does contain some true accounts: how our Most Holy Theotokos was born, what Joachim and Anna were like, and so forth. It is not an authoritative book in the Church. The Holy Church rests upon the four Evangelists. Nevertheless, among the things excluded from the canon, it contains a number of truths.

The Church accepts those truths. In that work, one may read about various events. What does one find there? First of all, a married couple who had no children had no place in the congregation, whether or not they were responsible for their childlessness. If only couples today could understand this—couples who make themselves sterile and do not want to become co-workers with God. If only they could understand what they are losing, what a blessing they are forfeiting, and what they are withholding from humanity and from Heaven by refusing to have the children God gives them. The work describes the following words: “You are not permitted to offer your gifts first, because you have produced no offspring in Israel”—not even his offering was accepted.

Neither your incense, as we would say, nor your candle—I do not know what they offered in those days—was accepted if, for one reason or another, you had brought no offspring into Israel and had no children. For this very reason, as you know from another part of the tradition, Joachim and Anna, being childless and having no children to carry on their line, separated for a time. Joachim departed for the wilderness of the Jordan. He went to the place where the Holy Monastery of Chozeba stands today. He entered the cave where the Prophet Elijah had prayed a thousand years earlier, when God sent him there after the drought. In that cave he sought the fiery prayers of the Prophet Elijah, and he prayed that God would grant them the fruit of the womb.

He prayed that they might be delivered from the curse of childlessness. There in the cave, an angel brought the good tidings to the elderly Joachim and told him to return, because his prayer had been heard. At the same time, down in Jerusalem, an annunciation was also made by an angel to Saint Anna, telling her that she would bear the fruit of the womb. After this came the conception of our Most Holy Theotokos. Anna offered this prayer—or, as we would say, made this vow: “As the Lord my God lives, if I give birth, whether to a male or a female, I shall present the child as a gift to the Lord my God, and the child shall minister to Him all the days of the child’s life.” In other words, the child would remain there in the Temple, and this is what happened.

Indeed, tradition says that Anna asked the midwife who was evidently helping her during the birth, “What is it? What have I borne?” The account says: “Her months were fulfilled, and in the ninth month Anna gave birth. And she said to the midwife, ‘What have I borne?’ The midwife answered, ‘A girl.’ Then Anna said, ‘My soul has been magnified on this day,’ and she laid the child down. When the prescribed days had been completed, Anna purified herself, gave her breast to the child, and named her Mary.” This is how the event is related in the tradition of what we call the Protoevangelium of James. But, as you know, Anna had made a promise...

Can a one-month-old child remain in the Temple? Not at two months, nor at one year, nor at two years. In any event, when three years had been completed and the child was able to remain there, they took her and brought her to the Temple. Psalm 44 speaks of the entrance of our Most Holy Theotokos. And according to another aspect of our Church’s tradition, expressed in her hymnography, the little child—the young girl—was presented in a solemn procession. They did not take her there secretly one afternoon, one evening, or one morning. No. They went openly and formally presented her. It appears that Saint Anna had been given an understanding of how she ought to proceed.

Thus she prepared a group of other young virgins, Hebrew girls. Perhaps she even taught them a hymn or a religious song—I do not know. With lamps burning, this entire choir of young virgins accompanied our Most Holy Theotokos to the Holy of Holies. I do not know whether you have visited Israel. Within the precincts of Solomon’s Temple, an area of about one hundred and fifty stremmas, the place traditionally identified with the Holy of Holies remains to this day, down on the right-hand side. It is, of course, in Arab and Muslim hands. Today we pay to enter and see that place, the Holy of Holies.

It is on the right-hand side, where the Mosque of Omar stands. Those of you who have been there will know that we make two visits and remove our shoes in two places: at the lower site, where the Holy of Holies stood and where our Most Holy Theotokos remained for eleven years, and at the Mosque of Omar. These are two places of veneration there, observed according to their own customs. So they brought the child formally, brought her into the Temple, and...

The married couple said, “We vowed this child to God, and now we bring her to you.”

But she was a girl. She was female, and as a female she could not remain in the Temple permanently. Even if she stayed, it could only be until a certain age. Once this girl reached the time when her monthly cycle began, she could no longer remain in the Temple; she would have to leave. As it appears, and as we learn once again with the help of tradition...

Saint Anastasius of Sinai, one of our Fathers of nepsis, or watchfulness, tells us that the Jews of that time—I do not know what they do today—always sought to learn God’s will from God Himself: “Should we do this, or should we not?” How did they ask? They had a square piece of fabric, roughly a handspan in each direction. Around its border were twelve stars of equal size, while in the center there was one larger star. They hung this object from the shoulder-piece so that it rested here upon the chest. They called it the logeion, or ephod—the logeion, or ephod. Then the priest would ask God, “Should we do this, or should we not?” And according to the flashes given by...

From the stars, or from the central star, they discerned God’s answer—whether He accepted the matter or not. In this particular case, the answer was that this person should be allowed to remain there, because God speaks. At least until the time when her monthly cycle began, since she was female, she could remain near them and live among them. In any event, the result was that, as Saint Theophylact also writes, an elderly high priest named Zacharias saw this little girl, took her into his arms, and kissed her.

A little child of three years old. And he said, as though prophesying, “The Lord has magnified your name among all generations.” Take this and connect it with what the Most Holy Theotokos said in the hill country. When the elderly Elizabeth embraced her and greeted her as the mother of her Lord, she said, “But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” And the elderly woman said, “When you greeted me, the child leaped for joy in my womb.” John was six months old in his elderly mother’s womb, and from within he greeted the Lord and the mother of the Lord. What did the Most Holy Theotokos say then? You will find it in the account we read: “For behold, from this time forth all generations shall call me blessed.” And here we see the elder Zacharias saying almost the very same words.

“The Lord has magnified your name, my little one, among all generations. In you, in the last days, the Lord will reveal”—he continues—“the Lord will reveal His ransom to the children of Israel.” And who is that ransom? Christ, who will redeem mankind. Then he took her and led her into the innermost sanctuary of the Temple, into the Holy of Holies. There she entered a place filled, we might say, with rays of sunlight, and there the Queen of Life remained. Many are scandalized by this and say that she could not have entered the Holy of Holies. They say that only the high priest entered there once a year to offer a sacrifice.

He entered to offer the sacrifice by virtue of his office. This does not mean that no one else ever entered, because farther on I found another detail: Samuel slept there, in the Holy of Holies, and it was there that he heard the prophecy. There he spoke with God, who was calling him, while Samuel kept going to the elder Eli. I do not know whether you have read these things. The phrase “once a year” referred to the sacrifice offered at the feast once each year; it did not mean that entry itself was permitted only once a year. This is where people stumble and reject the tradition, saying that she could not possibly have entered. And yet, in 1 Samuel 3:3–4, it says:

“And Samuel was sleeping in the Temple of the Lord, where the Ark of God was”—that is, in the Holy of Holies. For if we read Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews, we find that within, where the Ark and the other sacred objects stood, were all the types that prefigured the Most Holy Theotokos. There was the jar of manna, which prefigured none other than the Theotokos. There was Aaron’s rod that had blossomed, which likewise prefigured none other than the Theotokos: a Virgin gives birth, just as a dry rod puts forth blossoms. There too were the stone tablets that Moses received, bearing the Word of God.

Those tablets were a type of the Most Holy Theotokos, for from her we too receive the Word of God incarnate. And just as Moses fasted for forty days to receive the Word of God upon tablets of stone, so we also fast for forty days in order to receive from the Most Holy Theotokos the Word of God incarnate. And within the sanctuary there was also the golden censer.

There was also the seven-branched lampstand. All these were types of the Theotokos. And there, within that sanctuary, we see that Samuel slept. How, then, can Samuel be permitted to remain there, while the Most Holy Theotokos cannot? But human reasoning intrudes, I tell you, and the tradition is immediately rejected.

We accept that the Most Holy Theotokos was indeed placed there for this very reason: so that she might be kept safe. The Church even goes so far as to say that she was fed by an angel. Angels, as you know, bring spiritual nourishment. In other words, she lived a spiritual life there for eleven years, and then left when she reached womanhood, at about fourteen years of age. She remained there for eleven years and was then entrusted to Joseph, that chaste elder, so that he might shelter her. For the providence of God had appointed that she be preserved without knowing a man. Otherwise, if she became pregnant without a husband, she would have been regarded as an adulteress.

For this reason, God placed the elder over her to conceal what was happening and to deceive Satan. Then the rest of the divine dispensation unfolded. There is, therefore, a particular reason why she was fed by an angel. The Church says, “Within the Temple Gabriel feeds you, O Maiden.” Gabriel feeds you within the Temple, O Maiden. And when the nourishment is angelic, you understand, we do not have the ordinary bodily consequences people expect. Of course, we should not now try to offer a rational explanation. These things cannot be constructed through human reasoning. The human nous, the spiritual intellect, comes to a halt before them. We accept them; we walk by faith.

In any case, the fact remains that this Maiden stayed there and entered the sanctuary, and the historical tradition of that time testifies that she truly did enter. She was an extraordinary person, unique throughout all the ages—utterly unique. Many dispute this as well. Once, when I spoke about it, I said that she is unique. John Chrysostom says the same. Is he God, that we must accept it? No, but John Chrysostom says word for word: “Travel over the earth; search even the heavens. Journey across the seas and to all the ends of the world.” You will find no one equal to the Most Holy Theotokos.

John Chrysostom says that no such person exists. Yet others, for reasons I do not understand—not from blasphemous intent, perhaps—want to say that there were others like her. Some even put forward Saint Anna as her equal. Not at all. Saint Anna herself was sanctified through the Theotokos. No woman ever possessed the virtues and grace of the Theotokos. No woman ever has, and no woman ever will. Basil the Great says: “The generation of mankind living in her time had no one equal to Mary in purity.” There was no other person with Mary’s purity, capable of receiving the divine uncreated energy of the Spirit, so that God might come and dwell within her. Sadly, many people...

They seek, through arguments and connections I cannot understand, to attribute even deliberate sins to the Most Holy Theotokos, saying that she too was human, and so forth. No. Patristic theology does not accept this, nor does the Church. It is not correct. Saint Cyril of Alexandria says: “It is a bold thing to say that there was any fault or sin in the Virgin.” It is presumptuous, he says, to claim that there was any sin or transgression in the Virgin. The saints, those men of the Spirit, have given her countless titles. Saint Athanasius the Great, for example, calls her spotless and undefiled.

I have just used two words: spotless and undefiled. Who dares to say that the Most Holy Theotokos committed deliberate sins? Gregory of Nyssa calls her the mother of chastity and purity. Saint Gregory the Theologian also has another passage, which I do not have at hand. I was pressed for time and could not find it to present to you, but I remember roughly what it says: the Theotokos was not a virgin only in body; she was a virgin in her eyes, a virgin in her hands, a virgin in her ears, and a virgin in her sense of taste. All her senses were holy; all were virginal. This is what Saint Gregory the Theologian says. Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea likewise calls her “a pure, whole, and undefiled image.”

The Theotokos is a pure, whole, and undefiled image. And Saint Epiphanius the Great of Cyprus calls her “a wondrous vessel and the first leader in virginity.” Sin? I believe those who wish to attribute sin to the Most Holy Theotokos are making a grave mistake, even if they do so knowingly. This is not the time to explain the passages on which they base their claim, because those passages have nothing to do with whether the Most Holy Theotokos committed deliberate sins. There is no such thing. Perhaps another time the opportunity will be given.

Perhaps time will permit me to speak to you about it. We have a beautiful prayer in which we say, “Spotless, undefiled, incorrupt...” If we did nothing more than take these titles given by the Church and interpret them, we would never dare to say anything of the kind. A sound understanding of these things helps us believe rightly about the person of the Theotokos, the grace that she was counted worthy to receive, and the role she plays throughout this passing earthly life—and will continue to play until the end of the ages and beyond. For anyone who tries to follow all that concerns the Theotokos thereafter will be overwhelmed.

It is impossible to express in human words all that took place around this woman, this Maiden, this Virgin. To understand the significance of her person, one must turn to the prophecies, symbols, and images that speak of the Theotokos. Indeed, if we were to compare the prophecies, symbols, and images that speak of and reveal the person of Christ with those concerning the Most Holy Theotokos, I must tell you that those concerning her are even more numerous. And yet many of us reach the point of blaspheming her, whether directly or indirectly.

We do not know what we are losing. We do not know what we are losing. Just as Christ is the bridge that carries us to God, to the homeland for which we long, so too the Most Holy Theotokos is the bridge that carries us to the Son, who then leads us to the Father. Whoever rejects the Theotokos rejects the bridge through whom God came to us, the bridge that leads us toward the Kingdom of Heaven and brings us to the Father. Her person is beyond explanation. Yet we can begin to understand her worth, her power, and her grace by observing the warfare waged against her.

This warfare is, of course, waged by Satan through his instruments. I do not know whether you have noticed that all heretics speak with even greater malice against the Most Holy Mother than they do against Christ.

Satan hates her so intensely because, within her flesh, God concealed Himself from him. Satan seized Him as though He were mere earth, but encountered Heaven, as John Chrysostom says so beautifully in his Catechetical Homily on the night of the Resurrection. He seized Him as a man and encountered God; he seized Him as though He were an ordinary man and encountered his own death. This is why he hates the Most Holy Theotokos. Satan could see only as far as the Cross; he could not see what lay beyond the Cross. He could not foresee the Resurrection. Hades, it is said, encountered what it could not see and was cast down.

Satan saw Christ as a man, but through that very humanity he was overthrown. Because Satan could not foresee the Resurrection, he sought to destroy Him, unable to discern that this was not merely a man, the son of Mary, but also the Son of God—and that he would collide with the divinity of Christ Jesus. Therefore, from Pascha until Pentecost, the Holy Church presents through the priests the Precious Cross, with a burning lamp behind it: a candle representing the Resurrection, which Satan could not see. He saw as far as the Cross, but he did not see the Resurrection. And there is a bright ribbon representing the blood that was poured out, through which the serpent’s head was crushed. All of this is a sermon in itself.

It is a whole sermon on precisely how Satan’s head was crushed on Golgotha. God had said that the serpent would bite Christ’s heel, and indeed Satan pierced Him in His human nature. For if a serpent bites you on the heel, you do not die. But God also said, “And you shall crush his head,” and this was fulfilled there on Golgotha. Satan therefore hates the Most Holy Theotokos. And if you have access to patristic writings, it would be good to read a homily by Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, in which he addresses the devil, who pretends to know everything, understand everything, and rule over everything.

Satan always speaks out of his pride, just as he did in the case of Job. Do you remember when God questioned him concerning Job? God said to him, “Where have you been?” And he answered, “I have gone around the earth and walked beneath heaven.” In other words: “Everything is mine. I rule over it all, I tread upon it all, I govern it all—and here I stand before You.” Satan has never cast off his pride; he still has it to this day. But Saint Ignatius the God-bearer takes him to task and reduces all his boasting to nothing. “You think you know and possess everything,” he tells him. “Did you understand that the One who wept there was God? No. Did you understand that the woman who knew no man bore within her the fruit of God? Did you understand it? No. You saw an infant wrapped in human swaddling clothes. Did you understand that He was also God? No.” And he continues point by point. “Why, then, do you pretend to be so clever, as though you held everything in your grasp and governed everything?” For before God even Satan is ridiculous. And in this way the all-wise providence of God is revealed.

It is revealed both in what Satan did against man and in what Christ did against Satan. How did the devil ensnare man? He cast out a hook. And what bait did he put before the hook? What did he use? Whom did Satan first catch with his hook? He caught Adam and Eve in this way. How did he catch them? He cast out a hook. So, like a fisherman, what did he use as bait? He baited the hook with the promise of becoming a god in order to catch a tiny fish—for man was a tiny fish. What did he say? “You will become a god if you eat.” What, then, did he use as bait? The promise of becoming a god, in order to catch a tiny fish. And what does Christ now do? What did Christ place as bait upon His own hook in order to catch the devil? A tiny fish: a man, mere earth, the son of Mary.

These are the passages that concern the human nature of Jesus. For in Holy Scripture there are two categories, two kinds of passages: passages that speak of the human nature of Christ and passages that speak of the divine nature of Christ. For example, He says, “My Father is greater than I.” He says this in one place—I have noted it above here.

You see that He says His Father is greater than He is. So how can you say they are the same? Yet farther down, in the same chapter, He says, “Philip, have I been with you so long, and you still do not know that I and the Father are one?” They do not take that passage into account, you understand? And so Christ keeps Satan wavering, as we say, striking now the nail and now the horseshoe. Satan even reached the point of saying, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High?” He confesses that Christ is God. But then he sees Him eating. Does God eat? He sees Him weeping before the tomb of Lazarus. Does God weep? He sees Him sleeping. Does God sleep? And so he is deceived. Of course, elsewhere Christ drives six thousand demons out of a man—the legion. Thank you.

On the evening of Great Thursday came Satan’s final humiliation: “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death.” Satan thought, “If He were God, would He plead with them? If He were God, He would not fear death.” And so he dared to act. He stirred up his instruments, and they raised Christ upon the Cross. But when he saw the earth begin to shake, when he saw the tombs begin to open and “the dead are raised,” and all the rest, he understood that these things were not happening because of him or by his power. Then, once again through his instruments, he said, “Come down! Come down, so that we may see and believe.” But Christ answered, as it were, “I will not come down. Now, here where you have raised Me, I will crush your head. I will not come down.” Satan had raised Him upon the Cross, and from the moment he did so, his case was closed. Satan had been deceived; he could do nothing more. Within the mystery of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, then, there is something of all this.

These things belong to God’s plan: how Satan would be led astray and deceived, so that the will of God might be accomplished. This is why God placed her there and preserved her there. And afterward, as I told you, He placed her under the protection of that chaste man, the elder Joseph, to provide for everything that would follow. Joseph would then accompany her when they fled down into Egypt. Where else could God have sent her? Would He have sent the Most Holy Theotokos—a fifteen-year-old girl with a child in her arms—with some young man of twenty or thirty? A chaste man had to go with her, to help her, provide for her, and minister to this Mystery of mysteries. Saint Joseph belongs to her closest circle and is himself a great person. And the Church has arranged things most beautifully there in Gethsemane, where we find...

The tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos, along with the tomb of Joseph and the tombs of Joachim and Anna. The whole family is gathered there together. Yet the Maiden, the Queen, departed and went up into heaven, where she stood at the right hand. The Psalmist expresses it beautifully in Psalm 44, and the Church also proclaims it: “The Queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in garments interwoven with gold, arrayed in many colors.” All this refers to the Most Holy Theotokos. When the priest removes her portion during the Prothesis, from the offering loaf that we bring and that bears the inscription “Mother of God,” he says these words. Although she has gone there, in human terms the other tombs here surround the empty tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Let me also take this opportunity to tell those of you who may not know something that concerns our right faith.

The tomb of the Mother of God, the Mother of Life, is empty, just as the tomb of the Author of Life is empty. Many claim to possess religions. They do not possess true religion. They may have religious systems, but not true religion. There is one true religion, and the head of this one true faith is Jesus Christ, together with His mother, the Most Holy Mother. All the others are human beings, not gods. The tombs of all the founders of the so-called religions are full. Their founders remain bound in their burial shrouds, whether they are called Buddha, Muhammad, Zoroaster...

Calvin, Russell, Pope, or anything else. Whoever is presented as the founder of a religion remains bound in his burial shroud within the tomb. Only two tombs are empty, bearing witness to the truth and to the Resurrection: the tomb of our Lord Jesus Christ and the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Through these tombs and through this life-giving Resurrection, God renews His covenant with the Orthodox every year in the light of the Resurrection, miraculously granting them the All-Holy Fire at noon on Great Saturday. The Catholics deny this and do not even deign to receive the fire from there. The Protestants also deny it, as does that whole world...

They deny this enduring miracle, which the whole world can see. And I say that this is an opportunity for us to understand that the Author of Life and the Mother of the Author of Life have empty tombs. This is a testimony for us, and through these two empty tombs we hold fast to the truth and to the promise of the Resurrection. By God’s love they have, moreover, been preserved in a hostile environment. Judaism, Islam, Papism—all that world stands opposed to what is found there. And yet God jealously preserves that little place even now. Orthodox Christians still go there to venerate and draw strength, while those of other confessions also go and are convicted in conscience, and paths are opened for those...

Who will understand and desire to enter the one true faith, which is the Orthodox faith. Human reasoning has no place in these matters, since God Himself has set His seal upon them. The Most Holy Theotokos is, as I have said and now repeat, a person beyond our power to explain. I would like to share with you some teachings of saintly men concerning her person. Listen. “And this,” he says, is an interpretation of a Theotokion in the Second Tone of the Octoechos, which proclaims: “We understand you to be the Holy of Holies.” In other words, you are the holiest of all saints. “We understand you to be the Holy of Holies.”

“O undefiled Virgin.” The hymnographer says that the Mother of God alone possesses this distinction. “For there have been many virgins”—many female and male virgins—“and there are, and there will be; yet none of them could be called undefiled.” Though they may be virgins and preserve bodily virginity and physical integrity, no woman and no man can therefore be called entirely undefiled. Now listen to the Father’s reasoning: “For even if they escape sin in outward action”—they did not surrender their virginity, because they did not commit the bodily act—“they could not entirely escape it within the nous.”

That is, they are virgins bodily, but not spiritually. They are undefiled in body, but not undefiled in soul and in the nous, the spiritual intellect.

For an assault of logismoi—intrusive thoughts—may come against the nous, and a person struggles against these impure thoughts and desires so as to remain pure. If the nous remains upright and conquers, it casts out the thought. If one struggles, one drives away the idea of the act that one does not commit and preserves bodily virginity. But if the thought slips into consent, then although the body has not consented, the thought has. The thought is no longer undefiled; therefore, neither are you undefiled. This too is sin, the sin called sin in the mind. Sin may be committed in word, in deed, or in the mind. You did not commit the sinful act, but you thought about it, desired it, and entertained it, even if in the end you avoided it.

You are not undefiled; you have sinned in the mind. This is why our Lord, speaking about adultery, said, as you may remember: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that if your eye merely looks with evil desire, you have already committed adultery in your heart.” This is sin in the mind. Some people say—and I mention this because they say it—“As long as I am outwardly all right, everything is fine.”

You may be all right bodily. You may even be outwardly blameless because of some physical incapacity—but what about your spirit? Are you, and am I, truly pure? Who is clean from defilement? This too, then, is sin, the sin called sin in the mind. By divine grace you may be preserved from committing the act, and thus escape the deed; yet if you consented inwardly, you sinned through that consent. From that point of view, you remain a sinner.

“You are brighter than the ray of God and purer than purity itself.” Saint Gregory of Nyssa says the following: “What, then, is the Virgin? In both body and soul she is devout, reverent, and blessed.” Who is the Virgin, he asks? She is Theotokos not merely in body. Another writer whom those of you who read ecclesiastical literature may have encountered, John Geometres, says very sound things on this subject: “The Spirit had already filled her with grace, preparing her to give birth, without nuptial union, to that nature which is beyond nature—not in soul alone, but also in body.” In other words, the grace of God did not...

She was granted grace not only in her soul, but also in her body. “For even more than the holy souls in Paradise, her body received the divine uncreated energy of the Spirit.” Do you understand what he is saying here? Her body possessed such purity that it surpassed even the holy souls of the saints. Do you grasp this? And he is not the only one who says it; I have found the same teaching in others. Do you understand, then, how rash it is to say that the Most Holy Theotokos committed deliberate sins? I repeat: “For even more than the holy souls in Paradise, her body received the divine uncreated energy of the Spirit. For in those saints it was chiefly the soul, greatly purified, that the Spirit illumined.”

A little farther on he says: “But in her, even the flesh became the dwelling place of the whole Spirit and the workshop of the Son.” Even her flesh became the dwelling place of the whole Spirit. The other saints received grace from the Holy Spirit, and their souls were sanctified. But here, he says, there is the fullness of grace: “the dwelling place and workshop of the Son; indeed, she provided Him with matter from herself, united with Him through purity.” These matters have no end. We have an obligation to honor this feast, because the Theotokos is our mother. I cannot have Christ as my brother and God as my Father unless I have the Most Holy Theotokos as my mother. To have Christ as my brother, I must have the Most Holy Theotokos as my mother. To have God as my Father...

I must have Christ as my brother and the Most Holy Theotokos as my mother. She is our mother, and we can run to her with complete trust and simplicity, speaking with a child’s boldness. What hinders her and binds her hands, so that she cannot help us, is our sins. Once our sins have been put in order, the matter is resolved. The Most Holy Theotokos does not take us directly to God; she takes us to Christ. This is why the Church excludes the Protestant teaching when they tell us, “There is one mediator between God and mankind.” Certainly, there is one Mediator: Jesus Christ. But between human beings and Christ, that Mediator, who intercedes? In our prayers we say, “Intercede with Him who was born from you, O Lady of the world; become our intercessor.”

“Intercede with Him who was born of you.” We send her to Christ; we do not send her to God the Father. So the Protestants and Jehovah’s Witnesses are wrong when they accuse us of seeking the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, claiming that we should go directly to Christ, the one Mediator before God. Are we troubling the Lord? We simply want His mother to appeal to Him, to move Him to take up our cause before God. That is right. Therefore, anyone who does not follow this path—the path of the Orthodox Church—has in some way departed from us and is not on the right road. And I pray that the Holy God, who has providentially ordered so many things, will also provide all the more for our salvation. Amen.
