Summary
The lecture urges Christians to recognize the hidden malice, envy, anger, and hostility that cause them to wound others like serpents, scorpions, hyenas, and vultures. Christians should abandon gossip about absent neighbors and examine their own sins, using conversations for repentance and spiritual benefit. Like Abraham interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah, believers are responsible for praying for the fallen and asking Christ to replace their stony hearts with hearts of mercy and love.

In our last talk.
And in the talk before that, and those before it—for we have given four talks of this kind—we spoke about the prayer of a holy man who, I would like to believe, has also helped those of us listening to these talks.
He taught us how to think, because for the most part our prayers are not what they ought to be. They do not reveal a spiritually cultivated person, one who grasps many things and does not remain confined to stereotypes. And indeed, the more I spoke...
That was the impression I formed, in a way.
Tonight I shall continue with his reflections, and specifically with this...
“O Most Compassionate One, help my soul not to bite like a snake, not to sting like a scorpion, not to attack like a hyena, and not to tear my neighbor apart like a vulture.” Someone may ask, “Are there really people who behave like this?” Sadly, there are. And they are even found among those who call themselves Christians.
Many times, if we pay attention—though we do not—we will catch ourselves unawares, biting like a snake, stinging like a scorpion, and tearing our neighbor apart like a lion, a hyena, or a vulture. It happens. A Christian becomes a new person, if he truly is a Christian. He cannot become angry or grieved when something good happens to his enemy. Yet we are deeply grieved when we see our so-called enemy enjoying some success or joy, or when something good happens in his household. Something begins to bite within us. Where is this thing that bites us? It must already be inside us.
It remains quiet as long as it is not disturbed, but when the right moment comes, you will see its little head emerge. So, if this holy man speaks of it, that means freedom from it is possible. It happens among people and, I repeat, it even happens among Christians. Many times we hear Christians speak and see them behave in such a way that we ask, “Is this person a Christian? If this is Christianity, then what is everything else?” It makes no sense. A Christian’s very nature changes; his inner being changes. This is why he receives the meek Christ in Holy Communion: so that he may become meek. He receives the gentle Jesus: so that he may become gentle.
He receives the long-suffering Christ so that he may become long-suffering, and Christ, who is good, so that he himself may become good. He receives Christ—Christos with an iota—so that he may become good—chrestos with an eta. For the most part, we do not see these things in ourselves. We say that we have weaknesses, and often we even go to our spiritual father with faults of this kind. Holy Scripture teaches that, little by little, by beseeching Christ and living a Christian life, these things must be removed. If I have a wound on my foot, I cannot point to my healthy ears or hands. I have a wound, and I must attend to it. This is precisely how we must deal with our faults and weaknesses.
If I neglect that wound, even though the rest of my body is perfectly healthy, gangrene will set in. I will die because of that one wound. I do not need to have many faults. Even if I have only one, Satan can enter through it. Judas became a traitor. How? He left one window open, and that window was theft. He was a thief. Through it Satan entered and brought him to what he eventually became, so that he was lost for eternity. All the things this holy man mentions are present in us, some to a lesser and others to a greater degree, along with even more things that he did not address or put into words.
The snake bites treacherously, and sometimes so do we.
We harbor ill feelings toward someone, and when the opportunity arises, we pour out the poison. “Of course, I have nothing against the man, but...” How can I say “but”? If you have nothing against him, why is that “but” there, and why are you saying these things? No. We are pouring out the poison. Afterwards, we realize that what we did was wrong. Perhaps we even bring it to Holy Confession. We make a note of it and confess it. But then we do it again.
Clearly, the cause has not been removed from within us. To bite someone or stab at him with words—especially when he is not present—means that something is inside us. That act is only the result. The cause lies elsewhere: you harbor malice within yourself.
Thank you. Perhaps he said something about you or treated you badly, and the wound has not healed completely. It is like a doctor examining us to discover where it hurts. When he reaches the painful spot, we cry, “No, doctor!” He has found it. “Ah, here it is.” This is exactly how we must examine ourselves. Where are our weaknesses?
We should not go on saying, “You know, I fast,” or, “You know, I have an aunt who is a nun,” or, “You know, I was acquainted with a bishop,” and so forth. That is idle talk. Where is our weakness? “Help me, my Christ, to drive this snake out of me. Give me spectacles through which I may see even my enemy as my foremost benefactor.” For a person’s enemies are the ones who will lead him to Paradise, if he is attentive. Let us not excuse ourselves by saying that we are only human.
Are we going to cease being human? We are to become Christians, because the Christian rises above ordinary human nature; he goes beyond it. To be merely human means this: as long as others do not trouble you, you do not trouble them; as long as they do not harm you, you do not harm them; as long as they do not speak against you, you say nothing against them. There is nothing remarkable in that; worldly people do the same. But even when a Christian is harmed, spoken against, or treated unjustly, he does not seek to repay the same in return. So there is indeed a soul, he says, that bites like a snake and stings like a scorpion, striking and then hiding. Often, when a scorpion stings us, we cannot find it; it strikes and hides. We do the same. We stab at people, pour out our poison, and poison another person’s honor, reputation, and standing in society; afterwards, we hide. That is what we are too.
In a sense, we are scorpions, as this holy man says. The soul attacks, he says, like a hyena. Suddenly it lashes out—we hear it often. We pass by Christian homes and ask, “What is happening in there? Is this a bullfight? What is it?” Doors and windows are being struck, there is shouting, and so forth—and these are Christian men and women. We enter businesses where there may even be an icon displayed, and yet the same thing is happening inside. Nine lions would probably make less noise than we human beings do. The things he describes truly happen; he has not invented them. Then there are others who, as he says, tear like vultures. Vultures have that hooked beak. They tear off pieces of flesh. And indeed, one person can seem to bite another—to bite and devour him. He does not tear away flesh, but he tears away something from the other person’s very being, from his very self.
Saint Augustine used to say, “Take care, when you come here, to read what is written above.” He had these words inscribed on the plaster: “Brother, if you have entered here to bite and devour the flesh of your absent brother, you have no place here.” If you come here to bite and devour people who are absent, discussing them with your tongue, you have no business here. Leave this place. Yet for the most part, this is what we Christians do every day. “Come, we have not seen one another for some time; let us sit down and talk.” What will you talk about? The government? Politics? You will devour one person after another.
You will talk about your sister-in-law, your daughter-in-law, your mother-in-law, your neighbor—you will talk and talk. Whom will you talk about? Tell me. “What else can we talk about? We have not seen each other for so long; let us catch up.” What will you say? You will say nothing about your own sins; you will talk about everyone else. What will you say? This is what we call sharing the latest news about someone. A Christian has no room...
...for conversations of this kind. If there is a funeral in my own home, will I discuss other people’s funerals? If there is a coffin in my own house, will I not concern myself with removing my own coffin, but instead look at what is happening next door and farther down the street? Yet we refuse to acknowledge this. We imagine that we are doves, while we talk about everyone else, devour everyone else, and bite everyone else. And then we claim that they are the ones who trouble us.
Christians. They have never wanted to correct themselves and keep their mouths shut. What do we have to say? What are we going to talk about? Why waste the time? Tell me, what will we say? Examine your conversations and you will see that, out of every hundred words spoken—I am only giving an example; I have not counted them—ninety-nine are about other people. They concern neither us nor matters of salvation.
We discuss all sorts of other things, but not matters of salvation that would leave something behind—a saving benefit—so that we might be edified by this meeting, improve our souls, and help one another with our weaknesses. Then what this man says so beautifully would be fulfilled.
“You, Most Merciful One,” he says, “help me not to bite like a snake, not to sting like a scorpion, not to attack like a hyena, and not to tear my neighbor apart like a vulture.” Then, continuing along much the same line, he says: “Lord, grant me a compassionate heart, one that helps my brother to correct himself.”
A heart that prays for my neighbor who has fallen. Most often, our response is: “Shut the door; let us go inside. Let them tear each other apart. What can I do, anyway?” You can kneel in your home and pray, giving Christ the occasion to drive Satan out.
That is a great thing.
A quarrel, you know, some difficult situation—countless incidents come to our attention, involving not only strangers but also people dear to us. What is our response? What have we done? Have we felt compassion? Have we shared their pain? For whom have we felt compassion and sympathy? Then comes action. We have diagnosed the problem: this person suffers from this and that. What action follows? How can I help? My words do not reach him—very well. They cannot reach him directly. So how can they reach him? Indirectly. There are not only weapons that fire in a straight line; there are also weapons with a curved trajectory. Before you stand his refusal, his ego, and who knows what else. You cannot reach him head-on. So how can you send help around behind those barriers and strike the target from the other side?
Through prayer. Prayer is help that travels by a curved path, and it is the most effective help of all. Do you remember the story I once told you one evening, when a young man said to his mother, “I will tell you something, Mother, but you must not pray”? The mother had never prayed in front of her children, yet through her prayer she kept thwarting their plans. For we are not alone. God is also here. Just as the devil exists and does his work, so God also exists and does His work. This, then, is something that can benefit all humanity. It can benefit the whole human race, since the Fathers instruct us to pray even for Satan himself. These are astonishing things. See how far love can reach!
The love of the believer! He is a fallen angel—a fallen angel. What happens when an angel becomes the opposite of what he was? He becomes the devil. Consider how grave the Fall of Satan is. And yet, as I say, the Fathers go so far as to teach that we must pray for everyone: for the animals, for the birds, and for the whole creation that sustains humanity. Their prayer even includes the demons. But we do not know what love is, what prayer to God can accomplish, or how God receives prayer and puts it to use for the believer’s sake. So we do nothing. We prefer to sit for two, three, or four hours in front of that mindless box, watching every kind of corruption and foolishness, instead of kneeling to do what is said here. Why? Because we do not have such a heart.
That is precisely the point. He says, “Grant me, grant me,” not simply, “Give me.” To say “give” might imply compensation or payment. But this comes by grace; it is a gift. Grant me, You who bestow hearts like this, a heart that feels compassion and shares in my neighbor’s pain, degradation, and humiliation. We do not feel compassion. Instead, we pour out words: “Oh, that scoundrel! Oh, that wretched woman!” Why use such labels? Why? What is the reason? As this same man says, if we truly understand things, someone who commits suicide deserves pity. What label can you put on him? A person who does not care properly for his soul is out of his mind. What can you say to someone who has lost his reason? What can you do to him?
You must feel compassion for him, because as a human being you cannot do enough by your own strength. Ask Christ for the strength to shelter him. And God seeks an occasion to act. We must give Him that occasion through our prayer, our love, and our compassion. That is why he says: “Grant me a compassionate heart, one that helps my brother to correct himself.”
Is the other person like that? Will you accuse him? You know, we look upon others as beneath us, full of faults and mistakes, with this wrong and that wrong, and we push them aside.
As soon as someone insults or wrongs us, we immediately put him in the line of fire. We demand our dignity, our advantage, our rights, and our position. Does anything good come of this? No. Did you help that person? No, you did not. Who bears responsibility—he or you? Who is responsible?
You are. If you are more educated than he is, if you are more thoughtful than he is, if you stand above him in some way, then you bear responsibility for him. God will call you to account: What did you do for this man whom you call your inferior? Christianity contains astonishing truths. We are not uninvolved in another person’s fall and weakness; we too will have to give an account. What did we do? “But what am I?” What are you? A Christian. I am not merely telling you that you are a human being; I am telling you that you are a Christian. And as a Christian, go and speak to the Master. Speak with the Master about this person, about his condition and degradation, and say: “Lord, might I also share the blame for the state he is in today? What have I done?” For example, if someone is standing in the rain, you can hold an umbrella over him so that he does not get soaked, catch pneumonia, and die. If he dies, you will share the responsibility. Will you not hold an umbrella over him? This is something like what it means to shelter another person.
Shelter him through your prayer. This is a great matter. Once a mother had a daughter possessed by a demon. Satan seized the girl and swept her away like a feather, intending to throw her onto the rocks. When the mother saw her daughter being carried away before her eyes toward a cliff about three hundred meters away, and then hanging over its edge, half above and half below, without falling, she cried out, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” A shepherd farther away later recounted that he saw a fiery arrow descend from heaven and strike the girl’s head.
The arrow of the Most Holy Theotokos struck the demon and cast it down. Then they went and gathered the girl up from there—all because her mother had said only, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” Think, then, what might happen if I make it part of my daily rule to pray for this grandson, for this daughter who is going astray, or for this son who refuses to study, rather than turning only to other remedies. We may take him to a psychiatrist.
Yet we do not go to that Physician who has a one-hundred-percent success rate. We do not labor or offer any help toward another person’s correction. A grandmother lives in Palaio Faliro. Her daughter abandoned her husband and left her two children with the grandmother. She went away, married another man, and now lives as she pleases. The children are young: one is eleven and the other nine. Thank you.
In Voula, the older child stopped studying and lost interest in everything. These are the new slogans: children should not study. Satanic things. He became a problem for the professors, the teachers, and everyone else, and they began to question whether he could remain there any longer. He had to leave; the situation had become unbearable. Where could the poor grandmother take him? What could she do with him at home? She had gone back to work just to earn a piece of bread and pay her rent. Her own husband had also abandoned her and was living with another woman. The things happening among us are enough to make you tear your hair out. She telephoned. I told her, “Take hold of heaven. Nothing else can save you. Do not look down here for someone to speak to the child, or think that you must take him to a psychiatrist, or have his uncle, grandmother, or someone else speak to him.”
She said to him, “They are orphans. Help me. Speak to them; speak goodness into the minds of these children. What will happen? Are we losing them? Will they be lost?” The child changed that very day. He became the top student and received perfect marks this year. Everyone was astonished; the teachers were astonished. What happened? What happened? A miracle happened—without question, a miracle. But the elder interceded, and for the elder to intercede, the grandmother had knelt and shed tears. In her anguish she traveled to Aegina with borrowed money for the fare. But she found a solution. She did everything in her power to help. I do not know what will happen tomorrow. He may become a notorious outlaw; he may become anything at all, even the greatest robber in the world. But for today, at least, she won him through her prayer. It is something like that.
We too must help in such situations. I remember another case: a little child sick with cancer. Everyone was weeping, and Saint Nektarios of Aegina appeared and said, “The child will not die, because three people are praying for him.” The father was in fact an unbeliever, and so was the daughter.
She had killed all her other children through abortion. This was the fifth, who had happened to survive. After many abortions, this child remained alive in her womb. Nevertheless, the grandmother, the grandfather, and the sister-in-law prayed to the Saint. The child recovered, and the Saint granted the child back to them. I do not know whether they came to their senses or what they did afterward. That is another case.
Satan appears to someone he wants to destroy and says, “What can I do to you? So-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so are praying for you. What can I do to you?” The devil shows him the whole picture, as though displaying a personal record: “What can I do to you, when these people are praying for you?” This is a great thing. You may feel that you cannot speak effectively, that you cannot accomplish anything, that your influence carries no weight. As we say, you may be treated like a punching bag—like a nobody, like the rubbish of the household, and so on.
Kneel down, and tell no one. Kneel down. Steal away some time—as though you were in love. Steal away whole hours and meet Christ in prayer. You will discover strength within yourself as well; love will flood your heart, and then you will act out of love. Otherwise, you act out of self-interest—someone takes your wallet, and so on.
And those people will sense that something is happening around them, something that prevents them from carrying their malice through to the end toward which they have set out. But this is what Christ expects from us, and we Christians do not do it. We have much work to do. Retired people sit playing with worry beads and go out only to the coffeehouse or the playground. Fresh air is good, of course, but the greater work is prayer—especially prayer for someone else. We may have accomplished nothing in our lives. We may have saved nothing by the time we reach retirement. But the time remaining to us is not given merely to be killed. It is a great opportunity, with a great reward.
It is, so to speak, our true savings. But it requires the right kind of heart, and we do not have that heart—a heart that feels compassion for another. What do we not see in the streets? What do we not hear, learn, and read? And what have we done? Today we all lament tragedies in families, in the state, in the Church, and throughout the world. But who has knelt down and prayed? We do not do this because our hearts have not yet become tender enough to feel compassion. Your pain must become my pain; your need, my need; your moral ruin, my own ruin. For it is also to our benefit that the world around us should be healthy, in a manner of speaking. Do you leave a diseased tooth among the healthy ones? You remove it so that it will not damage the rest.
Or you treat it: you struggle to heal it, enduring pain and expense so that your body may remain healthy. Something similar applies to society, to our homes, to the family, and to the Church. As persons, we bear responsibility for one another. That is why he says, “I do not have such a heart—a heart that feels compassion and helps my brother to be corrected; a heart that prays for my neighbor who has fallen.” Someone has gone astray once and is continuing farther down that road. “But wait for him too, Lord, just as You waited for me. Your mercy is a boundless, unfathomable sea. How can I begin to comprehend it? Help him.” And when Christ receives such an occasion to act, He does not listen to Satan, even if that person deserves punishment.
If you read the Old Testament, you must have come across...
the Patriarch Abraham interceding so that Sodom and Gomorrah would not be destroyed.
Consider the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah: sexual relations between men. The angel turns away from this sin. In all other sins, the angel is present when we sin, whether secretly or openly. But when it is a sin of this kind—men with men, women with women, and so forth—he turns his face away in revulsion. So when Abraham learned that the Holy Trinity was descending to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah—when he heard, as we might crudely put it, that They were going to wipe them out and cleanse the place...
Abraham became their advocate without being asked. He acted on his own, while the people of Sodom knew neither what awaited them nor who was now defending them. He undertook to plead with God not to destroy them. He said to Him, “If a hundred righteous people are found among those five million, will You destroy the righteous together with the unrighteous?” “No,” God said. “For their sake I will not destroy the others.” Abraham dared to continue: “What if there are eighty?” “No.” “What if there are sixty? Fifty? Twenty? Ten?” He went all the way down to ten. Yet there were only Lot and his family—and not even the whole family, for Mrs. Lot remained behind, as you know.
His sons-in-law did not follow either, and Lot was left with only his two daughters. Once Abraham learned of the coming destruction, he considered it his duty to shoulder the burden. And we Christians, who imagine ourselves clear-sighted and like to believe that we are the saved while others are condemned, are obliged to shoulder that burden too. We are obliged to intervene and beg God to find some way. I do not know how—whether He will use us, use others, or send one of His angels. He knows what He will do and how He will act. When God sees love, He is moved and sets everything else aside. Though they may have blasphemed Him and trampled upon His commandments, though they may have...
He sets it all aside because He sees love. Love dissolves everything; love leaves no evil standing. “Love does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth.” I do not know—when I read this passage, it often rebukes me personally. No matter how much you or others may say that Panagopoulos does this or that, I am not doing what I ought to do. That is the issue. I must fulfill the whole work entrusted to me. If I am required to produce a hundred and I produce thirty, the fact that you produce nothing does not make up the difference. I am still short by seventy. I must produce what is required. I must exert myself. I must humble myself. I must ask Him to change my heart, to make it like His own—to take away the heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh, as the Prophet says. That is also what the author is saying here.
He says that such a heart prays for my neighbor who has fallen. Prayer is the only quiet way, and the most effective way. Prayer is the key that opens every door, even those locked with a double lock. Whatever you are about to do, pray first, and you will see the results immediately. Perhaps you must go and confront someone, and you are wondering, “What will he say to me? What will I do?” and so forth. Pray, and ask Christ to go before you. Then you will arrive and, to your amazement, find everything different. You will soon be ashamed of your fears and anxious thoughts. Someone else has gone before you. An angel goes ahead. Christ says to His angel, “Go and prepare that person,” and when you arrive, he receives you differently.
During the days of Pascha, a group of Christians went to an island to spend Holy Week and Pascha there. Some of them were preachers, and they gave talks on the island.
There were seven of them. They spoke about our need to prepare ourselves, to confess, to love one another, and so forth; otherwise, what kind of Pascha would we celebrate? They said that we should receive Holy Communion on Great Thursday reconciled and forgiven, and receive Christ within us. In the house where they were staying, there was a young woman, already grown, who was asked a question.
On Great Tuesday, if I remember correctly, she was asked whether she would receive Holy Communion on Great Thursday. She replied, “From what I have heard, sir, I should not receive Holy Communion. I cannot receive this year.” “Did you receive in previous years?” “Of course I did. But after what I heard this year, I should not receive.” “Then, from what you are telling me, you should not have received in those other years either.” “Yes, that seems to be true.” “Then matters must be put right.” “They cannot be put right.” “Why not?” “Because in a village outside the main town, there is an uncle of mine to whom I have not spoken for thirty-five years.”
“He is your uncle. That bond is sacred; he is your uncle. You are the younger one, so you must go and speak to him.” “He will throw me down the stairs.” “Why should I go? Why does he not come to me?” “Are we speaking about me or about you? What will happen if this continues? You will die like this.” “Then let me be lost.” “Would you like us to help you, so that you can go and your uncle will receive you?” She could hardly comprehend such a possibility. This was discussed on Monday evening, throughout Tuesday, and again on Tuesday evening. They spent the whole day trying to persuade her to go and be reconciled with the old man. Indeed, she had learned that he was bedridden and near the end of his life.
As they continued speaking, she began to want to go, as you can see, but it still seemed like a mountain before her. How could she do it? She kept imagining that he would abuse her, tear her apart with his words, and who knows what else. In any case, that evening we all prayed together. During Compline, which we prayed every evening, we also offered a special prayer for that immediate need. We said, “My Christ, You came down from Heaven to earth to reconcile man with God his Father. Go before Eleni in this matter today—her name was Eleni. Go before her Yourself. Send Your angel to accompany her tomorrow, so that the old man’s soul may not be lost and neither may she perish.”
We pleaded with God and offered this simple prayer of urgent need in addition to Compline. When she heard it, she began to take courage. To make a long story short, she rose the next morning and set out for the village, about an hour away on foot, where her elderly uncle lived. The old house had an iron door knocker outside, like the devices once used for telegraph signals: you lifted it and let it fall. She reached the house and raised the knocker, but she could not bring herself to let it strike. She lowered it gently and stepped away. Satan began suggesting to her, “What is going to happen? Think what you will hear! He will give you what you deserve...” and so on.
She went back and raised the iron knocker again, but once more lowered it gently and remained outside the door. As she later told us, she stood there for twenty minutes without the strength to knock. At last she took courage again. She reached out to lift the knocker, but it slipped from her hand and struck the door by itself. At that sound, the door opened immediately. It was operated from upstairs. Just inside the entrance was a staircase leading to the main living quarters above. Someone—I do not know who—pulled the cord and opened the door. The moment it opened, the servant called from inside, “It is Eleni!”
“Eleni? Which Eleni? That Eleni has not set foot here for forty years.” “Eleni!” Then the old man called from inside: “Did she have to wait until I was about to die before coming? Tell her to come upstairs quickly.” How did he know that it was that particular Eleni? She stood below utterly speechless and had not even moved toward the stairs. No one had seen her. The old man was inside his room. The servant upstairs had merely said, “Eleni.” Which Eleni? She had not said Eleni from the village, Eleni from the town, or anything of the kind. Yet the old man called from within, “Did she wait until I was about to die before coming? Tell her to come upstairs quickly.” When she went up, she fell into the old man’s embrace. He took her in his arms and covered her with kisses, as we say. They forgave one another, kissed, and wept. Who had brought all this about?
It was the One above who had done it—the Master above. Through the prayer that had been offered, He went ahead and prepared everything. But we have never tasted such things, and so situations that we really could save are left unsaved. We are not saviors, but we act on behalf of the Savior. He makes us courageous too; He allows us too to share in this joy. For you know, when that tear and that forgiveness freed those two people from the hooks that held them, the demons who had kept them bound were cast down. Satan gets between people: he takes hold of one on this side and the other on that side, whispering first to one and then to the other: “Do you know what they are saying over there? Do you know...” Then he goes to the other: “That one is thinking such-and-such. She should be the one to give in; he should...”
“She is the younger one. I am so-and-so.” That is how he keeps people trapped and will not let them go. There are many such situations in which, through one simple prayer, we could weaken him and see results. That is why he says, “Give me a heart that prays for my neighbor who has fallen.” This person too has fallen. He has quarreled; harsh words were exchanged. Perhaps he did something—he is human. If you have love, pray that you may help him, and you will see. If a person is willing, he has every opportunity to labor, to benefit others, and to be benefited himself. Indeed, two good things result: you show mercy to the other person, and you heal yourself. This is a great thing. These deeds will be stored up and added to our account on the day of judgment. These things we regard as nothing will prove greater than the greatest benefactions that...
the greatest benefactors of the world have performed, because these things are done out of love, whereas the others may be done out of egotism. Tsitsas, Averoff, Zappas, or someone else may find nothing in Heaven from all the institutions they established, while some other humble person may find a treasure there because he acted out of love, knelt down with tears, prayed, and helped his brother. I am not denying that those men accomplished something, but I do not know why they did it. Was it so that their names would be recorded? What calculation lay behind it? One action differs from another. We see certain things as great and glorious works of God, but our own criteria are always mistaken.
In any event, let me continue. In this third instance, he broadens the believer’s responsibility—first toward himself, and then more generally—and says, “Lord...”
“Help us to remember all those in other parts of the earth who do not know the truth.” This is indeed so, and it relates to what I told you: that we must pray even for Satan himself. Our responsibility is great. When have we prayed? And what have we done to enlighten those people, giving them sound knowledge and the truth? What have we done? There is an overseas mission here that needs a little money in order to carry on its work. Who among us can show me a receipt proving that, during the year, he gave even a small amount to this mission? If even one percent of us have done so, that is still no answer worthy of a Christian.
Can I myself go to Zaire? I cannot go to Kenya; I cannot go there. But my drachma can go—my drachma can reach them. One day, a magazine published by those engaged in this work overseas arrived at a certain home. The postman delivered it at lunchtime. The children and the others immediately leafed through it. They saw that it concerned overseas missionary work and began making their comments. Their household helper was also there that day. She had come on the day when she helped the lady with the housework, because the lady was elderly and could no longer work. When she heard the conversation, she sat at the same table, ate lunch with them, and listened as they spoke about this mission.
“Mr. Tasos,” she said, “I have never given anything to this work, and my conscience troubles me. Please, since you know where the ELIPA offices are, give them today’s wages from me.” They told her, “Never mind, Mrs. Katina. You are a poor woman, you have four or five children, and your husband is ill. Let others give; let others give.” But she insisted. “Please give them what is mine. I too want to offer something. It is unthinkable that I should be here, knowing, hearing, and seeing so much, while those people live in misery.” And she gave her day’s wages.
Ladies and gentlemen have offered a small coin, and with it two little girls may be baptized, or five may be baptized, depending on the amount. It may provide icons, a Gospel book, or any number of other things—things that remain unto eternity. You have seen how beautifully the Church prays and gathers beneath her shelter all those who have made an offering: “For this house and for all the temples of God.” This is the only money, the only placement, the only investment, so to speak, that is never at risk. Everything else is at risk; it can be canceled or rendered useless. But these offerings are never at risk. Yet we do nothing. We sleep peacefully tonight, unconcerned that so many people still worship snakes and cows...
the sun, or I do not know what else, even though we could do something. We have people living abroad who no longer know Greek; their children have lost the language. Have we sent them Orthodox books in English or in other languages so that they may learn?
Have we helped them learn or see something? Or have we sent writings in our own language that refute heresy to those surrounded by the swarm of heresies? People abroad today find themselves amid two thousand heresies. Have we sent any material from here to those people, at least to protect them, or to warn anyone who has taken the wrong path? In these matters we stand accused before the tribunal as responsible parties. We share the responsibility. We will be called to account for these things. Even if someone does not know, let him say so. “What did you do for your fellow man? What did you do?” There is another passage, if you will allow me to include it, from Ezekiel. There in Ezekiel, in chapter three, it says...
We share responsibility not only for the ignorance of others, but also for their weaknesses and their sins. Ignorance itself is a serious matter, and we will be called to account if we possessed something that we could have given to another. For, as it says, He placed us...
He placed us as a lamp upon the lampstand, to give light; we cannot hide. And there He says: “If I say to the lawless man that he shall die”—that is, that he will be condemned to Hell—“but you do not admonish the lawless man”—admonish him, not denounce him as though you were a judge of the highest court—“if you do not admonish the lawless man, he shall die for his sin, but his blood I will require at your hand.” You, He says, will answer to Me for it. Of course, we give the easy reply: “Who will listen nowadays?” or “Even if it is written, will anyone listen?” and so forth. But He continues: “If you admonish the lawless man and he does not turn from his lawless way, he shall die for his sin”—he will go to Hell and be lost—“but you have delivered your own soul.” You have done your duty. You cannot force him at gunpoint.
I remember another case. There was a large courtyard with little doors opening onto it, where various families lived. Among them was one Christian, the only person among the fifteen small apartments in that courtyard who went to Church. Right next door lived a man who was completely indifferent to the faith. They lived beside one another for twenty-seven years. One day the Christian learned from his wife that the neighbor was now gravely ill and that it was doubtful whether he would live through the night; that was what the doctors had said. He was suffering from cancer. You know, cancer often preserves a person’s faculties until the very end. The nous, the spiritual intellect, is not lost. Often you think you are speaking with someone full of life.
You think he will live for many more years, yet in a fraction of a second he is gone. The Christian therefore considered it his duty to go and see him. When his wife came home that evening and told him that the man was in a very bad condition and was dying, he went and spoke to him. As he sat there, he thought he might say something to him about Christ. He asked, “Mr. Nikos, have you put your affairs in order? Have you arranged your ticket for the place where you are going? I do not know when we will depart from here—in a year, in five days, in a minute, or in ten years. Have you done anything to prepare for where we are going?” “Where are we going?” the man asked. “To Heaven.” “Is there anything beyond the grave?” he replied. “Of course there is.” “There is nothing beyond the grave.” “How do you know?” the Christian asked.
“I know,” he said. “I have lived beside you all these years. We have been here together for twenty-seven years, and now that I am dying, you come to tell me this? Woe to you,” he said, “if there is anything beyond the grave.”
What an answer—one that strikes you to the heart. “Woe to you! Where were you for twenty-seven years? Did you ever send me even one pamphlet in secret? A book? Anything at all? Did you ever do anything for me? And now, when I am dying? Woe to you,” he said, “if there is life beyond the grave.” This does not mean the dying man could have escaped responsibility by placing it all on his neighbor. But neither was the Christian free of responsibility. We must not rest content with caring only for ourselves; we must care for the other person too. We have obligations toward others. We too will be called to account: What did we do? What countermeasure did we take to help the situation, to save it? Fourteen years ago, I published a book entitled...
“Avoiding Childbearing: A Mortal Sin.” On the evening when I announced it, there was an engaged couple in the audience. The man was a senior police officer, and the woman was his fiancée. They knew that the wife of his commanding officer had an appointment with her doctor the next day to go and dispose of her child. Something ignited within them, and they immediately began thinking about what they could do and how they might get this book into that woman’s hands. Perhaps it could bring about some good result. But how could they go there? It was already after nine o’clock, and there was no plausible reason for a visit. Could they simply appear at the door, wish them a good evening, or say something of that sort? They were deeply troubled.
In any event, they took a copy of the book and went downstairs.
The two of them began discussing what to do, what plan they could devise, and how to act so that the book would reach the commanding officer’s wife that very night. They took the tram to her neighborhood, passed by the building, and rang the intercom. The lady answered. “Good evening, it is us. We happened to be passing by and wanted to wish you a good evening.”
“We thought that, since we were passing, we would simply greet you over the intercom.” The lady said, “Come upstairs.” “It is not a suitable hour. We cannot come up at this time. Just give our regards to Mr. Efthymis.” “Come upstairs, come upstairs.” Then she pressed the button—click—and the door opened.
So they went upstairs. The man was carrying a newspaper, with the book hidden underneath it. When they entered, he placed the newspaper on the small table in the hall, leaving the book beneath it. They stayed for a while, exchanged greetings, and visited with them. The director was in his pajamas, reading something. Before long, they left.
After they had gone, the lady noticed and said, “Oh, the children forgot their newspaper. They left it here.” But then she saw the little book underneath. She looked at its title: “Avoiding Childbearing: A Mortal Sin.” She froze. She could not bring herself to pick it up. The book remained there until midnight. For two and a half hours she paced back and forth. Finally, she secretly took it into her room. She set it down without opening it. It seemed to her like something ominous, a warning of what was to come, and she did not want to open it. Eventually she glanced through a few pages from the back, then put it down again. At last, at three in the morning, still awake after that whole inner struggle, she began to read it. She read the entire book. Her eyes became red and swollen from weeping. She did not go and have her child killed.
That child is a fine fourteen-year-old boy today. But his rescue is owed to those people. We must do something—anything. And when a person says, “I must do something,” Christ illumines him, gives him wisdom and ingenuity, makes him a strategist, gives him strength, and enables him to do it. We are cunning in every other matter, but we are not shrewd in doing good. And because of this, as He tells us, one day we will find our Christ standing before us to call us to account. We shall stop here, and I pray that the Holy God, through the love shown by this man, may have mercy on us as well. Amen.

Έναν καβγά, ξέρεις, μια κατάσταση. Περιστατικά χίλια δυο υποπίπτουν στην προσοχή μας. Όχι σε ξένους μόνο ανθρώπους, αλλά και σε προσφιλή δικά μας πρόσωπα. Ποια είναι η θέση η δικιά μας; Τι έκαναμε; Συμπονέσαμε; Συμπαθήσαμε; Ποιον συμπονέσαμε και συμπαθήσαμε; Παρακάτω, ενέργεια τώρα. Έκαναμε διάγνωση ότι έχει αυτό και αυτό· ποια είναι η ενέργεια παρακάτω; Τι μπορώ να βοηθήσω εγώ; Δεν περνάει λόγος ο δικός μου, σύμφωνοι. Δεν περνάει έτσι. Πώς περνάει; Έτσι. Γιατί δεν είναι μόνον όπλα ευθυτενούς τροχιάς, είναι και όπλα καμπύλης τροχιάς. Έχεις μπροστά την άρνηση, έχεις μπροστά το εγώ, έχεις μπροστά δεν ξέρω τι. Δεν μπορείς εσύ να το φτάσεις έτσι· πώς μπορείς να το ρίξεις πίσω, να πάει από πίσω και να το χτυπήσεις;
Αυτό ακριβώς. Αυτός λέγει: «Χάρισέ μου, χάρισέ μου», όχι «δώσε μου». Το «δώσε» προϋποθέτει ίσως αμοιβή, πληρωμή. Χάρη γίνεται, δωρεά είναι αυτή. Χάρισέ μου, εσύ που χαρίζεις τέτοιες καρδιές, να συμπονεί, να συμμετάσχει στον πόνο, την κατάντια, τον υποβιβασμό του διπλανού σου. Δε συμπονούμε, μάλιστα, και πολλά λόγια: «Αχ, τον αλήτη! Αχ, την έτσι! Αχ!» Γιατί αυτοί οι χαρακτηρισμοί; Γιατί; Ποια είναι η αιτία; Αν παραδεχτούμε όλοι, λέει αυτός ο ίδιος, ένας, λοιπόν, που αυτοκτονεί είναι άξιος οίκτου. Έτσι χαρακτηρισμός ποιος είναι; Γιατί ένας ο οποίος δεν εργάζεται σωστά για την ψυχή του είναι τρελός. Τι θα του πεις ενός τρελού; Τι θα του κάνεις;
Με κάποιον να μας υβρίζει, κάποιον να μας αδικεί, τον βάζουμε στην μπούκα αμέσως. Ζητάμε την αξιοπρέπειά μας, ζητάμε το συμφέρον μας, το δίκιο μας, τη θέση μας. Βγαίνει τίποτα από αυτό; Όχι. Τον βοήθησες αυτόν; Όχι, δεν τον βοήθησες. Ευθύνεται αυτός ή εσύ; Ποιος ευθύνεται;
Εσύ.
«Ελένη; Ποια Ελένη; Αυτή η Ελένη έχει 40 χρόνια να παρουσιαστεί εδώ». «Η Ελένη!» Και φωνάζει ο παππούς από μέσα και λέει: «Έπρεπε να πεθάνω πρώτα και να έρθει; Πες της να έρθει γρήγορα επάνω». Πού τη γνώρισε αυτός ότι πρόκειται περί εκείνης της Ελένης; Η άλλη είχε καταπιεί τη γλώσσα της κάτω, δεν είχε κινηθεί καθόλου να πάει επάνω, ούτε την είχε δει κανένας. Ο γέροντας ήταν μέσα στο δωμάτιο. Αυτή από εκεί πέρα μέσα, επάνω, είπε απλώς «η Ελένη». Ποια Ελένη τώρα είναι; Δεν είπε η Ελένη από το χωριό, η Ελένη από τη χώρα, ξέρω εγώ τι· τίποτα. Και από μέσα ο παππούς είπε: «Περίμενε να πεθάνω πρώτα για να έρθει; Πες της να έρθει γρήγορα επάνω». Και όταν πήγε επάνω, πήγε και έπεσε πάνω στην αγκαλιά του γέροντος και ο γέρος την πήρε στην αγκαλιά του και τη ματσούλησε, που λέμε εκεί πέρα, τη φίλησε. Συγχωρηθήκανε, φιληθήκανε, κλάψανε και, και, και, και... Ε, ποιος τα έχει κάνει αυτά τα πράγματα;
Τον ήλιο, δεν ξέρω τι, που θα μπορούσαμε κάτι να κάνουμε. Εμείς έχουμε ανθρώπους στο εξωτερικό οι οποίοι δεν ξέρουν τη γλώσσα, την ελληνική· τη χάσαν τα παιδιά τους. Στείλαμε από εδώ εγγλέζικα ή άλλα βιβλία που είναι ορθόδοξα, να μάθουν;
