Summary
The Lenten prayer asks Christ for a heart that understands and shares the often-hidden suffering of the poor. The women who supported Christ’s earthly ministry illustrate how many believers can cooperate in Christian diakonia, and service to the least is service rendered to Christ Himself. Filled with divine grace, Christians face death in the hope of the Resurrection and learn to honor every neighbor as a person of eternal worth before God.

We will give a talk based on the teaching of this holy man, who teaches us mainly about things that escape our notice in prayer. Those of you who have followed the last three talks
must have realized that certain things truly do escape us. Our desire has focused on the basic matters, but there are others as well. People whose nous, their spiritual intellect, is somewhat more refined are able to grasp them. And as...
Thank you.
Indeed, the things we discussed had never even entered our minds, so that we might ask God to help us and then do something ourselves about them. That is why I propose that this evening we continue with this holy man’s prayer. Further on in his prayer—which was evidently composed during Great Lent, that is, during a season of fasting, as we shall see from what follows—he also says: “Lord, our poor brothers, the unceasing companions on our journey through life, are constantly increasing in number. You, unfathomable ocean of compassion, grant us a heart that both understands and shares their suffering.” This is what a true heart is: to understand and share the pain and need of another. Most of us do not have such a heart. It is true that another person’s need moves us, but not so deeply that we lose sleep over it, become troubled, or ask ourselves, “What will become of this soul who has fallen into such hardship? Will this person be able to find a way out?” For, as you know, we often stop at the thought, “What can I do? There is nothing I can do in this situation.”
Agreed. You can do nothing yourself, and that is true. But could someone else do something? Could several of you do something together? This is where we are responsible. Many times, we may be unable to carry another person’s cross, burden, need, or difficulty. We ourselves cannot do it. But could we perhaps move someone else to help? We have a duty here. We have a duty to take the initiative, pick up the telephone, go in person, and move someone whom we believe is able to help in that situation. You know, there is so much pain,
so much need. Do not think there is none simply because people are not holding out their hands in the street. Silent pain and unspoken need are greater. That is where the real need lies. A person who has reached the point of going out into the street to beg will manage to get a loaf of bread by midday. One person will give a tiny coin, another a franc, another two francs, another a drachma. But what will happen to the person who cannot do that, who has not yet gone out to beg? How will that person manage? There are many such people who are suffering. Unfortunately, we have not asked Christ to bring us into contact with such people, so that their pain and their need may be revealed to us
as they truly exist. I repeat: many of us are not in a position to meet that need ourselves. But someone else may be able to help, or many of us together may be able to deal with the situation. Suppose we are faced today with a need of five thousand drachmas. “But my whole pension is only five thousand! What can I give? What am I able to give?” Very well, you can give twenty drachmas. Someone else may be able to give fifty, and another a hundred. Or someone else may be able to provide the entire amount. There are people who possess not merely five or ten, but millions. There is plenty of money. What is lacking is heart, compassion, and willingness; instead, people keep their pockets tightly closed. And they imagine that if they give, they will become poor.
Should the farmer refuse to sow because he does not want his stores to diminish? Yet he sows because he is confident that he will reap. For the one seed he gives, he will receive a hundred. If not a hundred, then sixty; if not sixty, then thirty. He will recover even what he cast into the earth. He and his children will have food, and he will also have seed for the future. It is exactly the same when a person gives. For this part of the prayer concerns giving—giving, giving—being willing to give. A person should grieve when he has nothing to give. And if he has nothing material to give, he should seek to give spiritually, because spiritual gifts are always available to him. He can offer a prayer for this need, for these people’s pain, for the cross they bear. In short, what I want to tell you is that we are not free from responsibility
for the needs of others. You cannot sleep peacefully while your neighbor is hungry, while your neighbor is freezing without heat, while he is being evicted, or whatever else the case may be. You must show concern within the limits of your strength, as much as you can. When Christ our Lord was on earth, who attended to His material needs? There were so many people who were not working for a daily wage. How would they manage? What pensions would they receive? They had so many needs. There must have been fifteen, twenty, or thirty people around Him, but let us count only His immediate circle. Take the Twelve, the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother, and Christ Himself: fourteen or fifteen people. Fifteen people had daily needs. Who would meet them? Who would wash their clothes? Who would provide their shoes?
Who would provide the food for cooking? Who would cover all the other expenses that could arise as they traveled? Yet there was no Rockefeller to pay for everything. The Gospel says that women who had been benefited by Christ served them out of their own means. Many women contributed: a little from one, a little from another, and a little from another, and in this way Christ’s ministry was supported.
One woman alone might not have been able to do it, or might not have possessed the means, but many together ministered to Christ. The very same thing must happen in Christianity. If we cannot help ourselves, we still have a duty: we must telephone; we must notify others. I confess that in the course of this small ministry of mine, I have encountered many such cases, because some people think that a speaker...
should deal with the financial problems of his listeners? Of course, this is not merely a matter of speaking. It is a spiritual matter, and if we can, we should also offer some material help. I, however, became a link in the chain: I telephoned someone here, contacted someone there, and so forth. The appeal did not go unanswered. The entire amount may not have been raised. The need may not have been met completely. Yet some relief was found. The person’s case was set upon the path that, in Christian terms, it ought to have taken. In this matter we are guilty. If Christ were to examine us every evening and ask, “What did you do today for your neighbor in need?” our record would be shameful. For I want you to understand this: when your neighbor is in need, it is as though Christ Himself were in need, because Christ is present in the person of your neighbor. “Inasmuch as you did it
to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” He says that whenever you stand beside your neighbor, your brother, in his need, pain, cross, poverty, or difficulty, it is as though you had done it for Him. And He will repay you for it. Christ has countless ways of repaying a person—countless ways. He may preserve you from an illness that was about to befall you, or from an epidemic. You are spared pain, suffering, expense—everything. But we want Him to place cash in our hands so that we can see that He has paid us back. For whoever shows mercy to the poor lends to God. He does not show mercy to God; he lends to God.
If I lend you a hundred drachmas, what does that mean? That you will return it to me. If I give it to you as a loan, what does it mean? That you will repay me. A person lends to God: that is, God will repay him both in this age and in the age to come, with interest upon interest, for whatever he does for his fellow human beings. Beyond that, his giving shows that he is truly human. For today, true humanity has all but disappeared. We send the needy person to the charitable society; we send him to the Ministry of Social Services. We send him away simply to get rid of him, so that he will leave us in peace to enjoy what is ours. But this is not Christian. That is why this holy man says, “Companions are added daily to this unending journey of life.” And indeed, even today, in the fullness of the twentieth century, there are people with serious problems, whom we have a duty to...
support as far as we are able, without doing anything foolish. Discernment is needed in these matters: how to give, when to give, and what generally ought to be done. But we must know that we are indeed under an obligation. You see, spiritual almsgiving is not visible, while material almsgiving is. You may labor and help a thousand people reach Paradise, but if you have no visible material work—if it cannot be said that you built a hall, a church, a nursing home, or something of that kind—no one takes notice of you. Stones are taken more seriously
than souls that will enter Paradise. This is what counts today among people who are materially minded and always see things in material terms rather than spiritually. No one asks how many souls a person helped reach Paradise. They ask how many buildings he erected, how many institutions he established, and how many people he helped. That is good as well. But spiritual almsgiving takes precedence, and all of us are able to offer it. You can pray. You can stand and read the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon, for the pain, the need, and the cross present in a particular home. There are countless troubles today: incurable diseases, divorces, orphanhood, and many other things.
Do you remember what Christ our Lord said when Judas pretended to be generous and claimed that it should have been...
Thank you.
The Lord said, “You will always have the poor with you.” In every age there will always be poor people—not because God wants them to be poor. Most will be poor because of their own poor judgment, for most of us become poor through our own poor judgment. Some of us gambled our money away, others squandered it, and others spent it on revelry from our youth onward. There is a morning, a midday, an afternoon, and an evening to life. When you are young, then, you must work, save, and put your affairs in order, so that you will have something when the time comes that you can no longer work. Most of us are poor because we did not use our youth well. We did not make use of those years that should have been the years of the fat cows, storing up for the years of the lean cows. Anyone who reads the ancient account of Egypt and Joseph will learn many things about how one should conduct one’s life.
“You must save,” he tells him. “You must gather provisions so that you will have something for the years of the lean cows.” It is not wrong to save what you have earned by your honest sweat. It is not wrong; it is good, provided it is done reasonably. Then you will also have the means to stand beside another person in pain and need. This is good: you offer a great benefit both to your own soul and to your neighbor. So what did this holy man ask? “You,” he says, “who are the unfathomable ocean of compassion, grant us a heart that understands the pain and need of another and shares that suffering.”
To have compassion. The word “compassion” means to suffer with you, to share your pain, to grieve with you, to come down and enter into your suffering; and then the other person also finds some comfort. That is why Paul says, “Who suffers, and I do not suffer with him?”
“Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn?” You cannot claim to be a Christian, a member of Christ’s family, and then say, “I do not care; let him do whatever he wants.” It does not work that way. Of course, there are many things today that scandalize and trouble us, because many people bring problems upon themselves that they could have avoided.
What are we to do, then? What are we to do? We still have a duty. Just as a parent takes responsibility for a son or daughter whose life has been shipwrecked, sheltering and protecting the child, so must the faithful act toward their brothers and sisters who, for one reason or another—through foolishness or whatever else—are now in need. But these people, I repeat...
A heart that understands and has compassion is generally lacking among Christians today. That is why we sometimes say, “No one here understands me.” No one can come down to where you are, enter into the way you think, and understand your pain and need. “No one here understands me,” we say. This prayer comes close to the suffering of such a soul. Then comes another beautiful passage: “Lord, since we possess the Holy Spirit in proportion to the love we have for Your Church, increase our love for Your truth and for Your creatures, that we may be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
He is saying that the measure of our love for the Church is the measure in which we possess the Holy Spirit. If you love a little, you receive a little; if you love greatly, you receive greatly. In the Church, on two occasions, we say, “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You.” Give to us according to how much we have prepared ourselves, how large a vessel we have brought, and how thoroughly we have cleansed it. And the answer is: “That is exactly how much I will give you.” So this man says: Since we know that we receive the Holy Spirit in proportion to our love for the Church, grant us greater love, so that we may receive more. Because, you know...
Everything comes from God. Nothing comes from man himself. Man’s only duty is to ask God to give it to him. My dear friends, the Holy Spirit is not found in the marketplace, in worldly gatherings, or in carnal and materialistic things. The treasury of the Holy Spirit is the Church. The Church is the mother of the faithful, and you must remember: if a person wishes to have God as his Father, he must have the Church as his mother. Yet for many of us, if you will pardon the expression, the Church is merely another social gathering place.
Among the many places people frequent for various reasons—sometimes justified, sometimes because of their weaknesses—they have simply added the Church. That is precisely why they are not regular members of the Church, so to speak. Each person decides for himself when he will go, or whether he will go at all, instead of recognizing his obligation to go. At Vespers, which is served for the faithful and for the parish, we see no one. At Matins, we see no one. Only after the third bell has rung does a person begin deciding whether to get up, shave, eat breakfast, and then come. So we see people arriving with a newspaper in hand, at whatever time they please, after they have already eaten breakfast.
Then they leave whenever they please, as though the Church were a polling station: “I came, I saw, and I left.” Our love for the Church must have ardor and passion. When you are in love with someone, you try, as far as possible, to remain near that person for as long as you can.
We are not in love with Christ. Our soul has no ardent love for Christ. Christ is not the Bridegroom of our soul. That is why we have no such love for Him. Christ is there in the Church, yet everything there seems meaningless to us. Some of us grow tired, while others look for faults in the Church.
But these are not faults of the Church. They are faults of the people within the Church, or of those who represent her, so to speak—whether clergy, chanters, churchwardens, or others who serve. We go to Church like prosecutors, looking for their faults. We do not go to weep over our sins. We do not go to humble ourselves and beg Christ not to cut the thread of our life before we have repented, confessed, and changed our way of life, because very dreadful things await us beyond the grave. As I said, for many people the Church is simply hidden behind the lighting of a candle, perhaps accompanied by a little verse about that candle, but nothing more. And yet the grace of the Holy Spirit is found in the Orthodox Church, and specifically in the Mysteries of the Orthodox Church.
Through the Mysteries, the Church gives this grace of the Holy Spirit. And when a person receives the Holy Spirit, virtues and gifts begin to bear fruit within him. Without the Holy Spirit, expect nothing from man. The Holy Spirit is like a tree that bears fruit. Paul, writing about the Holy Spirit and His fruits in Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two and following, lists a series of gifts and virtues. He presents the Holy Spirit as the tree and all the others as its fruits: “But the fruit of the Spirit,” he says, “is love, joy, goodness, kindness, meekness, and self-control.”
He presents all these as the fruit of the Spirit. Therefore, you cannot attain anything good unless you possess the grace of the Holy Spirit. But to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, you must cleanse yourself, because He does not remain in what is unclean. He does not remain in people who are unrepentant or who have not confessed their sins.
The Holy Spirit does not remain in sinful people devoted to the flesh. He is like the dove released from Noah’s Ark: because it found no place to rest its feet—for the surface of the waters was covered with the bodies of people and animals that had perished in the flood—it returned to the Ark. The same thing happens with the grace of the Holy Spirit.
You said, “In proportion to how much we love Your Church.” And when we say, “I love the Church”...
Do we stop at empty words? If I love the Church, I make use of her so that I may receive what she offers. Otherwise, merely going to Church brings me no benefit. Satan also goes to Church—and often arrives before we do, in order to set his own snares before us there—but he receives nothing. The grace of the Holy Spirit cannot be forced or commanded, nor is it contagious. Each Christian approaches the Church and receives from her according to the life he leads, his preparation, his attentiveness, and his reverence. Ten people may go with the same degree of knowledge, but each with a different heart, and each will receive a different measure...
of grace. This man had understood that, and he begged Christ to give him love for this truth and to help not only him, but all His creatures—that is, all people, all his fellow human beings—to be filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. When a person is filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, all his concerns are resolved. Nothing troubles him, not even death, which we do not wish to see even in our dreams, much less discuss or hear mentioned. You see how we knock on wood.
We return from the cemetery and break plates, turn the pictures upside down, and refuse to serve sweets, lest death acquire a taste for them and come back again. We want no dealings with death. We indulge in all these falsehoods, disgraces, and foolish performances because we do not want to face reality. But a person of grace sees things differently. This does not mean that he will not weep when someone dear to him dies. But he will not tear out his hair, tell Christ, “I will not come to Church for three years,” or behave in such shameful ways. He will weep—or rather, he will shed tears. Many people say, “Christ also wept.” Christ shed tears; He did not wail or tear out His hair.
Is it written anywhere that His Mother tore out her hair, wailed, or brought professional mourners to make a spectacle there? Nor did they measure their love by the amount of weeping, as some women weep to prove how much they truly loved the departed man, and others weep to prove how much they loved the departed woman. These are our own pagan customs. A Christian must take this to heart and believe it: he came into this world to die, and he dies in order to live. Whether he departs today rather than tomorrow, or tomorrow rather than today, is another matter. It is not the end of the world. By one train or another—whether the express or the slow milk train—he will eventually leave this world, if he learns to see life in this way. But he can see it this way only when he has a relationship with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, he cannot understand these things. They will all seem far-fetched to him; they will all seem like lies.
But they are not lies. And yet this is precisely what we ask: “Give me illumination, give me strength, give me comfort.” All these flow from the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Grant me to see things as they truly are, so that I do not do things You do not want, things that are not for my good. Other people are watching us; they see what we do and ask, “Do Christians behave like this?” Tell me: when a Christian tears out his hair, shuts himself away at home, and behaves in this way, then where is the Resurrection, and what has become of all these truths? This man understood where the answer lies. Then he says: “Lord, help me to see my neighbor as another god after the one and only God.” Do we understand this? “Help me,” he says, “to see my neighbor as a god.”
As a person, as a subject in his own right—not as an animal, as some people say, and so on. As another god after the one God. The one true God is the God of Heaven, but I should also look upon the other person as a god. If we succeed in seeing one another this way, then the words, “Thy Kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven,” will be fulfilled. The earth will automatically become Paradise. The people walking about will be like angels. No one will bite, exploit, envy, or torment another. Instead, each person will endure suffering for the other. These are the qualities of love. Love does not seek its own, but today such love does not exist in the world.
There is self-interested love, carnal love, and calculating love. Love that involves sacrifice is very difficult to find. We should not say categorically that it does not exist at all; but if only one person in a hundred or a thousand possesses it, that is hardly enough. We cannot take comfort in saying that some love still exists in the world today, because we do not experience the other person as a person in his own right, someone who also has standing before God. Let me remind you of something we read. In the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, Christ Himself speaks about certain insignificant people—people whom we would never think of treating like gods. He says, “Do not despise one of these little ones, one of the least of these.”
Speaking of those insignificant people whom you cast aside, He says, “Their angels behold My Father face to face.” This seemingly unimportant person, who has a soul within him, has eternal worth. The person whom outwardly you consider worthless has a guardian angel and an immortal soul. If you think of him this way, you will give him the place he deserves. But you know, many people do not bring us any social honor, so we will not even receive them into our homes. Or if an unwanted visitor happens to come—someone whose visit brings us no prestige—we have him come in through the back.
If possible, we make him use the servants’ stairs, or we hide him away somewhere in the kitchen so that he will not appear before our guests. But is he not a soul? And this often happens not only with strangers, but within the same family. Today, an educated daughter may consider it beneath her to introduce her mother, who might be wearing a simple headscarf. “But there are important people in the sitting room!” Yes, but that mother brought you to the position you now enjoy. That father, weathered by the sun, brought you to this position. Where are you going? Where are we all going? I once read something about this that made a deep impression on me. A student was passing through the outskirts of a city with a fellow student.
There they saw a woman washing clothes in a washtub in her garden.
The woman spoke to one of the young men, and he went over to the fence, where they exchanged a few words. The other student asked him, “Who is she?” “She is my washerwoman,” he replied. “I bring my clothes to her.” But she was his mother. The poor woman heard him say this—his own mother, who washed other people’s clothes to pay for this fine gentleman’s education. Yet he was ashamed to say, “She is my mother. I live by the honest labor of this woman’s hands, and that is why I can now go about enjoying myself.” Do you understand? We do not give even our own people the honor they deserve, much less anyone else. We are beasts. And the man who wrote and said these things knew something about human nature.
“My Lord,” he says, “help me to see my neighbor as another god after the one God.” Yes, the one God is in Heaven, but the other person must also be like a god to me. Yet so often we are ruled by our pride. “I do not need anyone,” we say. Why boast that you do not need anyone? A stomach pain strikes you, and you cannot even get up from the floor. If your neighbor—the woman you claimed you did not need, and who perhaps brings you no social honor—does not come in and telephone for first aid, how can you say that you need no one? You will die there on the floor. But when have we ever thought rationally—not even spiritually or as Christians, but simply rationally? We ought to hold every other person in honor, whoever that person may be. Yet we do not regard our neighbor as a god; we regard him as nothing at all.
We treat him as an object, as nothing. Whom do people value or take seriously anymore? Sadly, we see how our society is developing today. What do we parents receive from our children now? Nothing. Do they even think about us? In the Old Testament, my dear friends, a father had the right to put his child to death. When the child acted perversely or did something contrary to God, the father had the right to put him to death. The father was like a god in the home. Did you know that? A god. When Paul spoke, for example, of “the Church in the home,” do you know how he envisioned it? The Church has Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints. That is the Church. He envisioned the father as Christ, the mother as the Most Holy Theotokos, and the children as the Saints. That is the Church in the home. Do we have anything like that? Today the father blasphemes Christ. The mother plays the role of—I do not know what—
anything other than the Most Holy Theotokos. And the children have no connection with the home at all. Nothing is left standing; we have built nothing. They value nothing. These things are terrible, especially in our times. As Christians, let me take this opportunity to tell you that we should value the other person, however unpleasant he may be. I do not know whether you have read this, but I believe Paul speaks of vessels in a house, some for honorable use and some for common use. Let me ask you: if we rely only on those we consider worthy and honorable, will we be able to manage? Do the humble vessels have no place in the house? In fact, they often have a more necessary place than the honorable ones. Tell me:
Suppose you are ill at home and everything you own is made of gold. Yet you also need a chamber pot. Do you not need that far more urgently than all the golden things you have put away in your cabinets? Yes or no?
That is how it is. We have built hospitals, and we keep asking for more hospitals. But who will staff them? Find me nurses, both women and men—there are none. “Madam, you will have to empty the waste yourself. Mrs. So-and-so, bring your daughter to care for you.” That is where we have arrived today. There are no people willing to offer their service. We supposedly wanted to elevate them. But elevate them to where? To where? Look at my fingers. This one is different from that one, and each of the others is different as well. Five fingers, all different in size, thickness, and condition. But look at what they can do together.
They are all needed—even this little one is needed.
This one is needed, that one is needed, and the other is needed; they are all necessary. So will you see the other person beside you as someone useful, or will you see him merely as an object? And if you think that life is meant for you but not for others—no. You must look upon the other person as a god, because very often you will need him. Therefore, there are no great or small people in Christianity, and there must not be. It is in our own interest that there should not be. Many people whom we disregard and consider unimportant may help us in a need that not even a king could meet. Some seemingly insignificant person may save us all. We read a story about a lion in the forest who was scratching the ground with his paw beside the root of a tree. Suddenly, a tiny mouse sprang out from the root, where it had made its nest.
The little mouse sprang out, and the lion pinned it down with his paw. “Well, look at you,” he said. “So you live here too.” The story says that the mouse replied, “Do not kill me, my king. You will gain nothing from it. Since God saw fit to make me, I too must be capable of something.” “What could you possibly offer?” the lion said. “What can you do? Be gone!” With his paw, he tossed the mouse aside. The little mouse gathered itself up and ran away. But one day hunters set traps and dug pits in that place, and the lion fell into one of them. The hunters caught him and tied him to a tree with a thick rope.
They went away to fetch what they needed to carry him off. The lion stood there huffing and puffing. Then the little mouse appeared in the distance. “Well,” it said, “what has happened?” “Never mind,” said the lion. “Go away, you miserable creature! Can you not see what I am suffering and what awaits me?” “What did I tell you once?” said the mouse. “I will help you.” “Go away,” the lion said. “Leave me alone! As if you could help me.” “I will help you,” the mouse insisted. “How could you help me?” “Wait and see.” The mouse went over to the rope, gnawed through it strand by strand, and severed the thick cord. “Go now,” it said, “and from now on, show respect even to those of us who are small. God knew what He was doing when He made us.” Then the mouse slipped away. But when will we ever come to our senses? These are fairy tales, you say. Yes, they are fairy tales,
but they contain a profound truth. So let us stop looking at other people as though they were mice, because that is how we see them. If we look at others as mice, how does God look at us? Have you ever thought about that? He sees me from above at every moment. You look at the other person, but how does God look at you? Ask Him: “My God, how do You see me?” And He may answer, “How do I see you? I do not see you even as a mosquito; I see you as nothing.” Then you will understand, and I will understand, how we ought to behave toward others. Here is another prayer: “Lord, help me not to lose the opportunity You have granted me.” The life we possess, the fact that we are here at this very hour,
is an opportunity granted by God. It is not our own. It has been given so that I may cleanse my soul of the poison of guilt and free it from the burdens of sin. Time is given for this purpose and no other—not for the success of five-year plans, engagements, Holy Matrimony, journeys, achievements, or anything else. Through God’s goodness and longsuffering, more time is added to our lives so that we may come to metanoia, to repentance, and cleanse ourselves of our sins. This cannot happen in any other way except through repentance, Holy Confession, and tears. There is no other way.
God is propitiated, and the affairs of our soul are set in order, only in the way I have described. And here he says, “Illumine me, so that I may not lose the opportunity of Great Lent, but that my soul may emerge from it renewed, joyful, and blessed.” For fasting, as you know, helps a person rise a little spiritually; there is no denying it. Those who fast a little receive some help, and those who fast more receive even greater help. All these things play a significant role in the lives of those who struggle spiritually. With these words, then, he reminds us that the time given through God’s goodness and longsuffering must be put to good use by us.
We must make good use of it. We must not simply let the days pass or say, “I need to kill some time.” Someone says, for example, “I will play a game of backgammon to kill time.” But is time some wild beast that you must kill? Have you no matters to attend to? Does nothing concern you? Have you done nothing in your life that requires metanoia, repentance?
Have you wronged anyone in a way that needs to be set right? Should you not read and learn things that you previously had no opportunity to study because of your work, your circumstances, and a thousand other reasons? Now that you have been given the opportunity, while God shows longsuffering and waits for you, you squander it at the coffeehouse, on outings, here and there, playing cards, and I do not know where else. This time is added to your life by Christ so that the human soul may be cleansed of its toxins. Every sin fills it with poison. The recording heads on these machines here require special equipment: a magnet is passed over them to demagnetize them, allowing the head to rest so that it can record more clearly. The same thing happens with the human soul. There are many poisons: the evil of the world, our own malice, our sins, our indifference, and the deprivation of oxygen from our soul. Do you know what it means for the soul to be deprived of oxygen? Who suffers from this lack of oxygen? Those who do not pray, or who merely make the sign of the Cross and think that everything is finished. Do you know what prayer means? It means raising your hands at sunset and remaining there until the rising sun finds you with your hands still raised.
It means becoming completely absorbed in prayer. That is what prayer means. Only then will the soul be rekindled. Prayer is the soul’s supply of oxygen. Then the nous, the spiritual intellect, is refreshed, and a person sees things differently. Without this prayer, he can do nothing. So the additional time granted to us is given so that we may give our souls rest, put them in order, cleanse them, and purge them of poison, so that they may be found pure on that day. Clearly, since he was speaking during Great Lent, he also says something about fasting: “Lord, help me, when I fast, not to proclaim it to everyone.”
Not to proclaim it to everyone. And help me not to stop merely at abstaining from food, but to go on and rid myself of my offenses. We may fast because it is a fasting season, yet we do not fast with our eyes. We may sit for two, three, four, or five hours in front of the television. We may talk on the telephone with someone about anything and everything—other people’s affairs, current events, politics, family matters, and so on. And then we ask, “What are you cooking?” “Oh, I’m cooking lentils today.” She has devoured the whole world, devoured people, and left nothing unchewed—yet she is cooking lentils without oil. “Help me,” he says, “not to stop merely at abstaining from food.”
Abstaining from offenses—that is the point. For our fasting to be accepted, we must also abstain from sin, and that is what we fail to do. Many people, for example, fast at the cooking pot, but not in the marriage bed; they do not restrain the flesh. They fast at the cooking pot, but not with their eyes or their tongue, and they do not fast from the passions. Holy Scripture teaches this. Many people fast while refusing even to say good morning to one another. They should expect no fruit from fasting of that kind. The purpose of fasting is also to resolve everything else connected with sin: to offer that greeting, to right the wrong, and to ask forgiveness wherever harm has been done, for one reason or another. That is how fasting should be understood. He also says:
“When I fast, help me not to proclaim it or talk about it.” Many people make a show of being exhausted by the fast: “Oh, when will this fast be over? When will this week end? It has tormented us.” These are the complaints of the flesh. The flesh wants its own way; it does not want fasting. It wants to rush out and enjoy whatever it desires, whenever it desires it. It does not want deprivation. In many situations, the flesh does not like being told no. But the human soul, which should be mistress over the flesh, must have the power of veto here: “My lady, no.” For you should know that the soul and the body make an uneasy partnership, like a dog and a cat. They are enemies, not friends. Whatever the soul desires and finds beneficial, the flesh does not want.
And whatever the flesh wants is not beneficial to the soul, so the two are constantly at odds. Yet good judgment must govern and prevail—the soul and what is beneficial to it. For the flesh is earth and will return to the earth, but the soul will remain in eternity, and everything depends on that. The soul is the rider, and the body is the carriage. The carriage cannot take you wherever it pleases; it must go wherever the one in command—the driver—wants it to go. That is how it should be. Many of us have handed the reins to the flesh, and we have done the same with our children. Have we ever told them no, so as to train them and teach them to say no themselves when they ought to? You see children during fasting seasons holding ice creams, souvlaki, and all kinds of food—on Wednesdays, Fridays, even during Holy Week, with no distinction at all.
We must teach them too. Just as we ourselves must discipline our desires, so that the soul and what benefits it may direct the body, we must also enlighten those who look to us, in a gentle, educational, and instructive way. They must hear it from us, of course, but they must also see it in us. We must not do the opposite ourselves while demanding that others observe what we do not. People today, and young people especially, need an example. Words heard by the ear are not enough; they need to see with their own eyes. They may hear, but they do not truly listen when they do not see.
Can a father tell his child not to smoke when he sends the child to buy him a packet of cigarettes?
Can a mother tell her daughter not to smoke when she sends her to buy a packet of cigarettes? “If smoking is bad, Mother, why do you smoke? And Father, why do you smoke?” Do you understand? They also need a corresponding example in this matter. So the real question is how the soul is to gain from this partnership. The center of gravity lies in the human soul. The virtue of fasting is a serious matter, necessary for both the young and the old. Everyone is benefited. We older people especially need fasting and simple food. Otherwise, we will suffer heart trouble and die. They will be picking us up from some street in a cart. The Occupation taught this to those of us who are older.
When the only things available on Athinas Street were carts loaded with carob pods—not even leafy vegetables could be found—all these illnesses had disappeared. There was no high blood pressure then, no stomach trouble, no heart trouble, nothing. But when food returned, the refrigerators filled up again, and we began eating day and night, everything filled up once more with illness.
There are more hospitals and asylums than homes. And what would happen if all the sick left their homes? There is no household without someone who is ill, even if that person is still up and about. Look at me: I am still moving around, yet I carry seven illnesses. Where does all this come from? From overeating. Food has caused all these things. If I had fasted, I would have half as many illnesses. I would also have ten more years of life and would move about very differently.
He says, “Fasting, vigil, and prayer”—these are the three together.
“Through fasting, vigil, and prayer, receiving heavenly gifts.” A person who does not fast cannot pray. He cannot keep vigil, nor can he abstain. But the person who fasts soars. We have accustomed our flesh to having its every whim indulged. And in doing so, we harm not only our soul but also our body.
If we fasted twice a week, as the Church calls us to do—on Wednesday and Friday—we would give our stomach and pancreas a rest. We could spend the day eating fruit or some other simple food. They would rest and then function better, more vigorously, and in a way more beneficial to our health. Yet we have not even understood that this is for our own good, and we whine if we fast even once.
And then, after fasting, you go out and announce it so that others will pity you: “The poor man is fasting—how he suffers!” Better not to fast at all in that way. Let us not proclaim our fasting. Do you understand? In any case, we shall stop here for this evening. With God’s blessing, let us strive to put into practice whatever we can from all that we have heard. May God be our helper.

των αναγκών των άλλων. Δεν μπορεί να κοιμάσαι ήσυχος, εφόσον ο διπλανός σου πεινάει, εφόσον ο διπλανός σου είναι ξυλιασμένος, δεν έχει θέρμανση, τον πετάνε έξω, ξέρω εγώ. Πρέπει να ενδιαφερθείς μες στο πλαίσιο των δυνάμεών σου, όσο μπορείς. Όταν ο Χριστός μας ήταν στη γη, ήρθε αυτός στις ανάγκες Του τις υλικές. Ήσαν τόσοι άνθρωποι, οι οποίοι δεν δουλεύαν μεροκάματο. Ποιος θα τα έφερνε πέρα; Τις συντάξεις που θα λάβαιναν; Είχαν τόσες ανάγκες. Όσο να μην ήσαν 15, 20, 30 άνθρωποι θα ήσαν στο περιβάλλον, αλλά εγώ σου βάζω το στενό περιβάλλον. Σου βάζω 12, σου βάζω την Παναγία Μητέρα Του, σου βάζω και τον ίδιο, 14, 15 άνθρωποι. 15 άνθρωποι καθημερινώς έχουν ανάγκες. Ποιος θα τις καλύψει; Ποιος θα τους πλύνει; Ποιος θα βάλει τα παπούτσια;
να συμβόνει. Συμπονώ είναι σύνθετη η λέξη: πονώ μαζί σου, υποφέρω μαζί σου, θλίβομαι μαζί σου, συγκαταβαίνω στον πόνο σου και νιώθει κι ο άλλος μια παρηγοριά στο σημείο αυτό. Γι' αυτό ο Παύλος τι λέει; Ποιος πονεί, λέει, και δεν πονώ;
Πες μου.
Βρίσκεσαι στο σπίτι άρρωστος και έχεις χρυσά όλα. Έχεις την ανάγκη όμως και από ένα γιογιό. Το έχεις ή δεν το έχεις ανώτερη και πιο πολλή ανάγκη απ’ ό,τι έχεις όλα τα άλλα τα χρυσά, που τα έχεις βάλει μέσα στους μπουφέδες; Ναι ή όχι;
εκμεταλλεύσιμος, δηλαδή να τον εκμεταλλευόμεθα. Να μην περνούνε οι μέρες, ούτε να λένε οι άνθρωποι «να σκοτώσω την ώρα μου». Παίζω ένα τάβλι, παραδείγματι, λέει, να σκοτώσω την ώρα μου. Μα θηρίο είναι η ώρα αυτή να τη σκοτώσεις εσύ; Δεν έχεις θέματα; Δεν σε απασχολούν; Δεν έχεις κάνει τίποτα στη ζωή σου που έχει ανάγκη μετανοίας;
Μπορεί να λέει ο πατέρας στο παιδί να μην καπνίζει, εφόσον το στέλνει να πάει να του φέρει ένα πακέτο τσιγάρα;
