Summary

God grants time so that Christians may identify the neglected wounds of the soul and prepare for eternal life with Christ. Sin is a failure to reach humanity’s God-given purpose, and its proper remedy is repentance, sacramental confession, and restitution rather than substitute religious acts. Those guiding sinners toward God’s Kingdom must approach them with humility, compassion, patience, and awareness of their circumstances rather than self-righteous severity.

He comes and opens up new horizons for us, revealing new things that we ourselves fail to grasp and therefore fail to ask God for. And this is true both for me as I read these words and for you as you hear them. Many things escape our notice.

There are still details missing from this dwelling we call the soul. And our Christ—I do not know whether you have realized this—is particular about where He dwells. He will not settle just anywhere we choose to take Him. He wants this dwelling to be made better, and that is precisely why He grants us more time: so that we may improve this dwelling called the soul.

For we shall dwell with Him in eternity.

So tonight, once again, I would like to borrow some thoughts from this saintly man and share them with you. In one stanza he says: “Lord, many times I say, ‘I am a sinner.’” We say this too. “Help me to realize precisely how I am sinful and guilty, and to confess that I have truly sinned against my Lord, for I did this and that.” As I said, we too declare that we are sinners; but precisely how we are sinners, and whether we have truly recognized our sin—

whether we have confronted it, fought against it, and begun to stop sinning—this we have not done. We simply say, “I am a sinful man, a very great sinner,” and so on, sometimes with genuine humility and sometimes merely speaking humbly. In reality, however, if we do not take a stand against that specific sin—which, for many of us, is not one sin but many—and if we do not specifically seek its healing and strive to stop committing it, then it becomes clear that we are not acting rightly and are not using God’s forbearance and goodness for our benefit. This saint says, “I say many times that I am a sinner.”

“Help me to realize where I am sinful.” You see, there may be a germ in the body. Doctors perform blood cultures, urine cultures, or whatever else is needed to identify the germ and determine which antibiotic will cure it. The same thing must be done in the human soul. Someone may ask, “Who can tell me precisely where I am sinful?” The Gospel can tell you. The Gospel reveals our spiritual illnesses. It is a diagnostic guide to the illnesses of the soul. If a person would only pay attention, instead of thinking and acting carelessly, wasting his hours and squandering the opportunity given by God’s forbearance, he could discover many sins and strive to correct them. Some people sin through their tongue. Begin there. If your ship is taking on water at the stern, you cannot go and inspect the bow while ignoring the place where the water is coming in. Your own ship is taking on water through your tongue. Your tongue says inappropriate things, indecent things, and far too many things. You must curb it. You must struggle against it and say, “I will fight so that I do not fall.” Perhaps you are swept along by the world. Perhaps you are swept along by fashion.

As you know, the world and fashion demand things contrary to what Christ teaches. You must stand firm and struggle in this matter. You must become modest and self-controlled. You must have a model before you. If you are a woman, go before the iconostasis and look at the Most Holy Theotokos. If I am a man, I will go and look at Christ. I will take my model from there: how I should dress, how I should conduct myself, how I should wear my hair, what I should do, and so forth. How else can it be? Christ adds days to a person’s life so that he may correct his faults. I see that until today I did not fast because I regarded fasting as unimportant; but now I will begin to fast. I will correct this area in which I have been falling. Perhaps I cannot correct it one hundred percent. Then I will correct it eighty percent, seventy percent, sixty percent—but I will correct it. I will do something; I will struggle. I will not say, “It does not matter.” How can it not matter? Why, then, did Christ teach these things? Why did He fast? Why did He practice self-restraint?

He died a virgin. Why all these things? Are they ugly or evil? What purpose do they serve? Did He not leave them as an example for us? Therefore, if a person truly wishes to discover his faults and asks Christ about what he does not know, Christ will show him. He will show him when the person says, “Where do I fall short? What is it in me that displeases You? Tell me. Help me to correct it, cut it off, lessen it, and make a real struggle.” We do not do this. We simply do not. And if we do not, how can we possibly be corrected? Here, then, this saintly man gives us an opportunity. “Help me,” he says, “to realize where I am guilty, where I am disorderly, and where I am sinful.”

Then, when I understand this, I will confess that I have truly sinned against the Lord. Do you know what “against the Lord” means? It means before the Lord, in His sight. Many of us take account of the eyes of the world. We worry about the ears of our neighbors, the police, and the public prosecutor. We take everyone into account—everyone except God. We take precautions so that no one will see us, discover what we have done, or overhear us. Yet at that very moment we are sinning before the Lord. Very well, you have managed to deceive everyone else. But can you deceive Christ? Can you sin far away from Him or hide your sin from Him? Can you do such a thing? No, you cannot. What, then, do you say? “He is everywhere present and filling all things.”

Most of us Christians lack this awareness. That is why we sin without even asking God, “Where do we fall short? What are we doing as human beings that You do not want us to do?” God is not jealous in the way human beings are jealous: “He does not want you to wear this; He does not want you to do that; He does not want you to go there.” No. If He is jealous for us and insists that His will be done in all things, it is because His will is for our benefit. This is what is good for you. That is why I stay close behind you. That is why I keep telling you, “Do not do this; do not do that.” It is for your own good. People do not see this today because they are surrounded by so much evil that they can no longer discern it. They have never lived the Christian life and do not know it.

They have never tasted what Christianity is, and so they do not understand. Naturally, they say, “It is nothing; all this is ridiculous.” But when a person, with God’s help, struggles and makes progress, he begins to notice the details of his life. Then he repents over every word, every glance, and every step, saying, “Why did I say that word? Why did I cackle and laugh there? Why did I go there with that intention? Why did I take that thing? Why did I make the other thing?” His conscience now reproves him, and he tolerates nothing. Today we say, “This does not matter; that does not matter.” But it will matter then, because God said that these things must not be done. That is roughly the spirit of these words. And when he says, “Unless You come and reveal to me—

unless You uncover my weaknesses, my faults, my sins, my guilt, and my disorder—only then will I confess and say, ‘Yes, I did this before You while You were watching me, and You saw every detail. I offended You in this way and that. This is exactly how I did it—and not only what has already been said, but even worse.’” If a person examines his own confessions, what will he find? How does he actually confess? Does he give the details? Does he want to state them clearly so that he may feel some relief? Or does he try to conceal his confession behind false words? How does he confess? Thank you.

There are people who go to a confessor and afterward say, “He did not sit and listen to me. This confessor does not satisfy me. I only managed to say a few things in general terms,” and they do not feel at peace. A person needs someone to whom he can go and speak—not to tell stories, but to describe what is actually happening, what is connected with a particular sin or a spiritual problem. This is what the saintly man understood when he said, “Illumine me.” And, as you know, no one can attain this unless God reveals it to us. It is the grace of the Holy Spirit that points out the scar—the scar, the wound. For the wounds of the soul are hidden. They do not lie exposed on the outside where you can see them. They are insidious; they lie within us, smoldering beneath the surface.

Unless Christ reminds a person that a particular thing leads to death and harms his soul, that person will not be able to make progress. Include this, then, in your prayer. Ask Christ to show you the details: where you fall short and what you have still failed to do rightly and well. Christianity is not something vague and approximate. As we have said before, Christianity is found in the details. Now listen to another of his thoughts: “Lord, I have been sinning since childhood.” He acknowledges that he has sinned from childhood. Many people, including many mothers, say, “Oh, the child is still young.” As someone says in the dialogue, “It is not the end of the world. He will stop when he grows older.” One child blasphemes, another curses, another speaks filth, another says other wicked things, another steals, and another lies. In whose service are all these things being done?

In Christ’s service or the devil’s? They are done in the devil’s service. Is it Christ who prompts these things, or the devil? The devil. Therefore Satan has gained a foothold in the soul, the tongue, and the bodily members of that child. This is why the Fathers require accountability from children and, if possible, want them to begin going to confession from the age of five.

We have older children who have still never gone to confession. Who will cleanse all these wrongdoings? They are not cleansed by any other means. They are not paid off; they do not rot away, rust away, or disappear. They are forgiven when they are acknowledged and confessed. The one who has the power and authority to cleanse the sins of both young and old is the priest—it is the Church—and no one else. If a young child has no spiritual need, then why do you submit the child’s name when he dies young? You submit his name, bring a prosphora for him, and have a particle taken out for him. Why? Is he an angel? Do angels not exist? Angels do not receive Holy Communion; they have no need of it. Human beings do. Is the child already a saint? Then why submit his name? Do not submit it. If, then, the child has need there of Holy Communion—that is, of divine communion with Christ—he has the same need here. Humanity has become savage, yet today, when children behave badly, we cover it with the sugary excuse, “He is just lively.”

He is under demonic influence, under Satan’s influence. If you observe the ways in which this behavior manifests itself, you will see that it has nothing to do with true humanity. These are the actions of wild beasts. What are these lies you are telling? How does the man making this confession put it? He says, “I have been sinning since childhood.” And David, as you remember, said, “Remember not the sins of my youth, O Lord.” For woe to us if Christ comes to call us to account for everything we have done since childhood. Nothing is erased, and nothing is lost. God’s justice demands an account. And even if God’s justice did not demand it, the devil would. Christ cannot tell him that we did not do these things. Christ is not a liar; neither does He cover up liars or sinners. He forgives both liars and sinners if they ask forgiveness and practice metanoia—repentance—but He does not conceal what they have done.

Satan says, “Why should this person be spared? He did this, this, and this.” Do you remember one evening when I told you something about Saint Ephrem the Syrian? He was unjustly put in prison. An angel came and explained why he was there. When Ephrem was young and playing at the threshing floor, he had once let loose a widow’s heifer, and it was taken away and sold. “You still owe her that heifer,” the angel told him. “This debt is still held against you; that is why you are in prison now.” Those who desire salvation will undergo all the chastening demanded by God’s justice—those who truly desire salvation. Do not be surprised. Many strange things happen to us that we cannot explain, and we say that we are innocent. You may be innocent now, but you still have other outstanding debts. God’s justice requires you to put such matters right, even those that go back to your childhood. How many examples could I repeat?

“I have been sinning since childhood,” he acknowledges. But we say, “Well, I was young. What did I know?” “I have been sinning since childhood. Remember not the sins of my youth and my ignorance.” “I did not know.” Many people say, “I did not know that this was a sin.” Very well—but now that you have learned, what are you doing? Have you taken care to set right through metanoia—repentance—and confession the things you did in ignorance? And now that you know better, are you striving to do the opposite? That is the real question. “Remember not the sins of my youth and my ignorance.” I committed faults which I know I have still not fully understood. What, then, did I do? Do you remember what God said to Eve? “What is this you have done?”

You must come to understand what it meant when you stretched out your hand toward the tree from which I told you not to take. Have you understood what happened? Or do you think it was merely a matter of an apple, a fig, a walnut, or an orange? “Have you understood?” He asks her. “What is this you have done?” It is as though He were saying, “Wretched woman, do you know what you have done? Do you understand what it means that you stretched out your hand toward that tree? That outstretched hand will bring God down to earth and crucify Him.” This is what we have failed to understand: what sin truly means. Every sin is directed against God. And because we do not understand this, we do not seek forgiveness. We sleep peacefully, unaware of the true gravity of the matter. “I have committed faults,” he says, “which I know I have not fully understood. Lift from me—take away from me,” he says, “the…”

“Lift from me this haze that hangs over me and veils me—the heavy stains of sin.” For a heavy, black veil covers every soul, and a person does not know exactly what he has done before God. “And have mercy on me, O God,” because unless a person receives mercy from God, he can do nothing on his own. Man’s saw is only a wood saw; it can cut nothing here. It is the grace of God and the mercy of God that save us. Human righteousness gets us nowhere, nor can it offer anything toward our salvation. It is the mercy of God that covers us. It is the mercy of God that forgives us.

The mercy of God gives us His Body and His Blood. The mercy of God waits for us. It is the mercy of God for which we must thank Him every day. In any case, let me continue. He then says, “Lord, I missed the mark.” I missed the mark. Do you know what that means? Some interpret it as, “I forgot.” But “I missed the mark” does not mean “I forgot.” There was a target, and I failed to hit it. I missed the mark. As we say, I sinned by missing the target; I did not go where I ought to have gone. So: “Lord, I missed the mark. You placed me here, but I went astray and went somewhere else.”

I went off the rails on which You had placed me. You know, a person is like a locomotive. It is made to travel on the rails. When, for one reason or another, we are careless and become derailed, it stops. Whatever we may want to do, besides the spiritual damage we suffer, we can accomplish nothing. Some way must be found to put it back on the rails so that it can move forward again. However long its engine runs while it is off the track, it will only struggle through dirt, mud, and rocks. Its proper work is to travel on the rails. This is a great lesson for Christians who sin. Although sin is healed only through metanoia—repentance—confession, and making right the harm we have done,

we try to cover our filth, our sin, and our fall by other means—supposedly through almsgiving, or through candles, vows, and things of that kind. No! This is the road, and this is the road you must walk. Have you fallen? You must rise, go to the one appointed to heal you, and continue on your way. How mistaken are those who sin and want to return to the Church, to the priest, and to confession, yet look for other ways to put matters right. They run elsewhere,

and then somewhere else again. Imagine that you are a watch that has broken, and you take it to a cobbler; or that you are a shoe that needs repairing, and you take it to a watchmaker. That is how far from the mark, how absurdly and inconsistently, we deal with our soul.

Have you sinned before? You must turn back and say, “I have sinned. I am at fault; I did it, Father. May God forgive me and give me the strength not to do it again. Yes, I did it.” Why go looking for lies? Why look for other ways of your own, when this is the way? This is the medicine. Here is the road; here is the place. Have you missed the mark? Turn back and begin moving forward again. There is no other way. Do whatever you like while your soul remains fallen; you may perform feats like a fakir for a thousand years, but not one of your sins will be wiped away. Sins do not simply disappear. Satan will always demand an account of them from Christ. And what will Christ do? Will He lie to him, as I said earlier? Or will He conceal what we have done? He will neither lie to him nor conceal it. He will cast us into Tartarus, because we refused to do what He showed us: that this wound is healed in this way, that one in another way, and another

in yet another way. You see, a pharmacy contains a thousand and one medicines, but each is intended for its own illness. You cannot take a medicine meant for one disease in order to cure another. You must take the appropriate medicine. So it is in this case as well. Good. He puts these things in order and says, “I missed the mark; I went astray while supposedly seeking true joy.” How many people search along the paths of sin, hoping to experience joy! “I am foolish, senseless, without understanding.” People may be called wise by others or by themselves, for we are always giving ourselves very high marks.

We award ourselves the corresponding degree of wisdom and issue ourselves the certificate. Yet every person, whatever wisdom or knowledge he may possess in this world—even if he has landed on the moon—if he has not come down to earth enough to understand that he is a sinner and needs a sinful priest, he is foolish and senseless. Let him possess whatever he likes and as much money as he likes. Let him become a Rockefeller, an Onassis, or whatever else. Look: even their names are fading away. People seek joy in sin, commit sins, and miss the mark. Man’s purpose in this world is not to sin, but to do what is right.

God gives him every opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of the body and of the world in lawful and moral ways—but lawfully, so that he need not fear God’s constable, the justice of God. “I am foolish,” he says. “Lord, All-Wise One, grant me wisdom in the Spirit. Give me even the tiniest portion of it, All-Wise One, so that I may understand—understand my mistakes and how I have missed the mark, and see that what I am doing is not right. It is not for the good of my soul.” A person who does not act for the good of his soul is foolish, senseless, and without understanding. These are beautiful thoughts, as we say, but

few are the people who will truly undertake the struggle for the sake of their immortal soul. But let us continue. He then says, “Lord, may I never forget the gall I gave You to drink, the crown of thorns I placed upon You, the nails I drove into You, and the spear with which I pierced You.” Do you think our Christ ascended the Cross for no reason? Who raised our Christ upon the Cross? Our sins. And who, even to this day,

causes Him to suffer in the same way? Our sins. Do you know what Paul writes in the sixth chapter of Hebrews, if you have not noticed it? Whoever has been baptized and then sins crucifies Christ again. We cannot comprehend this. We do not feel the pain of our soul as He does; we do not. We do not love ourselves as much as He loves us. This is what the man acknowledges: “May I not forget; I pray that You help me never to forget what You did for me on Golgotha, and what You still do even now,” because the person who sins becomes forgetful.

He begins all over again. For if Christ were to say, “I am stopping; I forgive no more,” that would be the end. There would be healing for no one, because no one is without sin. Among Christians there are differences in sins, both in quantity and in kind, but no one is sinless. What, then, would happen if He ceased to forgive? What time is it? What a serious matter this is! And yet we give it no thought and do not take it into account. If we truly did, some of us might even be driven to suicide. This is precisely why John says in his catholic epistle: “My little children, I tell you not to sin. Take care not to sin. But if anyone sins—whether through ignorance, carelessness, being carried away, being pressured, or for whatever reason—if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus the righteous.” The justice of God demands man’s punishment; the justice of God calls for man to be cut off and cleared away. But Christ hastens to assume the debt of sin for each of us, provided that we go and seek forgiveness through concrete repentance, and in this way we are spared.

He says, “We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus the righteous.” And not only, he says, for us and for our sins, but for the sins of the whole world. What Christ accomplished on Golgotha—I do not know how many people who have passed over the earth have grasped and understood it, or ever turn their thoughts there and picture, with the nous—the spiritual intellect—Golgotha in Jerusalem, where Christ stretched out His arms upon the Cross between heaven and earth to reconcile us, and where His blood began to settle the debt of our sins. He continues to do this even now in His Church, taking care to cleanse from sin those of us who receive Holy Communion. Thank you. It is like the pelican, the bird which, when its young have been bitten by a snake,

pierces its own side and gives its blood to the young, restoring them to life. If you wish, open the Lamentations of Great Friday, and you will find there the image I have just described. In many monasteries there is also a carved wooden icon of it. At Meteora, for example, in the Monastery of the Transfiguration—the Great Meteoron—there is such an image: the pelican piercing its own side, with the young birds below that have been bitten by the snake, giving them its blood to drink so that they do not die.

“Like a pelican, O Word (Logos), You pierced Your side and restored Your dead children to life, giving them life through the streams of blood You poured out.” We are the little birds; we have been bitten. Satan is that serpent, and Christ, through His blood,

restores us to life and does not let us die. Do you understand? But we have not grasped this. That is why we put off receiving Holy Communion for many years. We treat it as something only for when we have a lump in the throat, or need a gold tooth, or perhaps for next year. Not tomorrow—next year. “Next year, God willing.” And then we leave. We fail to see that it is the daily food of the human soul, given for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Let me continue. “Lord, when I approach my brother to speak to him about Your Kingdom”—because we too do this and consider it our duty—“help me to go with true humility,

with exemplary understanding of his situation and the circumstances of his life, with sincere tenderness and compassion for the shortcomings of his character, and with intense and living love for his soul.” When we go to help someone who, for one reason or another, has missed the mark, is this how we go—with humility and love? Do we recognize that this person has certain mitigating circumstances? Do we recognize them in the case of this girl or this woman? How did she come to such a state? How did she begin walking this road? What was the cause? Who pushed her in that direction? Who made it easier for her to go that way? Do we acknowledge these things and feel compassion for her? Do we approach gently, taking care not to wound her?

Do most of us act in this way? We go as teachers, and we are often severe when we ought to be merciful. This requires skill, and that skill flows from kindness, if kindness exists in the soul. The soul that undertakes to speak to another about the Kingdom of Heaven must first itself be a sensitive and discerning soul. The one speaking must first weep for the other, and only then correct himself, so that the other may also come to tears. The one who speaks to him must put himself in the other person’s place. Should he present himself as sinless, as though he had lived in another hemisphere and not here, while everyone else is sinful? Should he look upon the other person as the dregs of humanity? No!

Say instead, “Look, I am worse than you. If I sat down and told you all that I have done, you would never even say good morning to me again. Do not be afraid.” You must condescend with compassion to the other person’s weakness. You must help him, not drive him to despair. Many people do fall into despair. Satan takes hold of them and tells them that what they have done is too great, that it is unforgivable, that there is no hope for them and no mercy for them. He drives them to despair, and they may even reach the point of suicide. How greatly such a person needs consolation! You see, when someone has cancer, we do not tell him. Even when he is one of our own, we do not tell him: “You have cancer.” Of course, we know that he will die. Why do we not tell him? We refrain out of love. Is it out of malice? No, it is out of love, so that he will not feel crushed and fall into despair. In exactly the same way,

we must speak to those who have cancer in the soul. We must condescend with compassion to their weaknesses and handle the matter as we ought—with great delicacy and gentleness. One nurse may come to change your dressing and, without the least compassion, tear away the adhesive strips and gauze, making you cry out so loudly that you can be heard all the way to Lycabettus Hill.

And another person does it gently and delicately: she moistens the dressings with a little solution, pulls them away bit by bit, and asks, “Does that hurt?” She tends to everything so carefully that you feel one-tenth of the pain, and often none at all—in contrast to someone who comes along and tears them off as though nothing were happening. This is how we too often behave when we approach other people. You see, with God’s help, a Christian feels the need for someone else to come to where he himself now stands. He feels the need for another person to enter the fold. He does not want to keep for himself what he has tasted, found, and experienced. At once something arises within him—a stirring, a warmth. Naturally, he begins with those closest and dearest to him: his children, if they are far from the Church; his husband or wife; his parents; and so on. Then this concern extends to others whom he meets along the way—on the street, at the office, wherever it may be. It is something implanted in the Christian when he becomes a Christian: he is given this thirst, this longing for the salvation of another person as well.

Among the other ways Christ described the Christian, He also called him salt: “You are the salt of the earth.” What properties does salt have? We use it to salt something so that it will not decay. The Christian is the salt of society, of a society that has lost its savor. He has the ability to give it flavor. We say, “Ah, this is bland; bring some salt,” and the salt makes it flavorful. And indeed, when a Christian is part of a gathering, a circle of friends, or a household, he gives flavor to everything—if he truly is a Christian. Besides these properties, salt has another one as well.

Anyone who eats salt becomes thirsty. So this thirst—the salt of Christ that you have received within you—creates the desire to bring someone else into the fold, so that someone else may learn these things too. You think, “I listened to a recording, and what was said there should reach somebody else as well.”

“I want to send that recording somewhere.” Some send it abroad, while others take not one or two, not five or ten, but twenty or a hundred copies. “Send me a hundred to distribute outside Thebes. Send me seventy. Send me fifty.” A person understands that this will reach someone else, and so he does it. This is what the prayer here is saying: “Help me to approach others with true humility,” because what you are going to tell them

is Yours in the first place. Has it never happened that you found yourself with a group of people, or speaking with someone, and a conversation began? You said certain things, answered his questions, and laid the matter before him. Then, when you had finished and he had raised his hands in surrender, you said to yourself, “My goodness, what did I just say?” And if he asked you, “Tell me those things again,” you would answer, “I do not know how. How could I remember what I said to you?” Did I myself know what I was saying? Who said those things to you? Someone else spoke them through you. So when you offer a brief prayer within yourself and say, “My Christ, this man is opposed to the faith and is broken down at present. Help him. If You can make any use of me, put something into my mouth so that I may comfort him and bring him illumination. Perhaps he will want to break free and climb out of the mud”—then God can act. But humility is necessary.

If there is no humility, words will not reach the heart, no matter how wise or true they may be. It matters greatly where they come from—whether the words have been blessed by God and possess a penetrating power. A single word spoken to another person can bring about a complete revolution in his whole life, and from that moment onward he begins to think differently. This, then, is his prayer concerning his duty toward those outside. For the Christian does not shut himself away within himself. He will withdraw into himself to pray, but at the same time he must give from what he receives. There must be a tithe. You see, we pay taxes to the state in order for it to function. In precisely the same way, we must also pay a kind of tax from our spiritual wealth.

It is an obligation: we give a tithe, both materially and spiritually. Many people even exhaust themselves trying, by the power of God, to place into another person’s mind what needs to be placed there. But if you succeed and it truly enters his mind, never say that this achievement was yours. Say humbly, “It was You, Lord.” That is why the prayer says, “Help me to approach him with true humility and with exemplary understanding of that person’s circumstances and position in life.” You cannot approach a woman today whose mother was a prostitute and raised her in that way, and simply preach at her, judge her, accuse her of this, that, and everything else. This is how she was raised. You must come down to where she is and say, “My child, pray for your mother. She made a mistake.

She took the wrong road. Do not curse her. You must now take a different stand, put your own life in order, and there is still hope. Even if she has died, you can help her through your prayers, memorial services, and so on.” You must come down to the other person’s level and take his circumstances into account. You must not humiliate or despise him. No. This prayer shows us what true Christians are like—those who see their own weaknesses. It then offers another wise prescription: “Lord, when I speak about You, let me not forget that Your gate is narrow and Your road is drenched with tears.” Drenched with tears—a tear-soaked road. “And Your disciple is the one who

takes up his daily cross, so that I may not expect joy and ease after every virtuous act, but may live the life in Christ out of divine love.” These are beautiful details, and they are necessary for the Christian.

“When I speak about You,” he says, “let me not forget that Your gate is narrow and Your road is drenched with tears.” The city is spacious, but its gate is narrow. If you manage to pass—thank you—through that narrow and difficult gate, the city itself is spacious. Then you will be in a place of freedom and breadth.

But how will you pass through the gate? We are swollen with egoism, worship of the flesh, self-interest, worldliness of every kind, anger, rage, lies, gossip, and one thing after another. We are overfed with these things. We have not taken care to fast from these sins and grow lean enough to pass through. We must struggle in this world and leave behind some of the things we carry, so that we may be able to enter. “Grant me,” he says, “never to forget that Your gate is narrow and Your road is drenched with tears.”

We do not weep in order to receive spiritual gifts. We weep because we have lost a girlfriend or a friend, or because we cannot evict someone from a house so that we can rent it for more money. We may weep over such things; we may even weep out of malice. But we do not weep over our sins. Very few people leave Holy Confession with tears in their eyes. Very few rise from prayer with tearful eyes. They are very few, because there is still so much rust within us—so much rust. The blade cuts and cuts, first through the nail, then through the thickened part, but it has not yet reached the tender flesh beneath. When it finally reaches it, we cry, “Oh, stop there! Do not cut any farther.” There is still much rust within us, a thick callus covering the soul.

We do not grasp these things as this man presents them here. “Grant me,” he says, “to understand and fully take in that Your disciple is the one who takes up his cross every day.” We do not take up the cross daily. We say, “I gave him the answer he deserved. I put him in his place. Who does he think he is, speaking to me like that? You know, no fly settles on my sword!” Yes—prepare yourself for Paradise! Do you know why you came into this world? Was it so that no one would trouble you, harm you, or treat you unjustly? You will face such things here. You did not come here to avoid them. You came here to struggle so that you would not lose your soul. What good is it to put another person in his place if, in doing so, you step out of your own proper place? Thank you.

To preserve what you call your dignity while losing your dignity as a Christian—this is absurd. A person must therefore be attentive and bear his cross here. Are you a mother? You will bring into the world the children God gives you. Are you a father? You will not go out and steal; you will struggle, because you have taken a yoke upon yourself. You will not gamble your money away, drink it away, or squander it. You will bear your cross and refuse all these things. Through fasting you will crucify the flesh in all its corrupt appetites—the appetites of both the table and the bed. You must crucify many things in order to be a Christian. You pass through this world only once; you will not pass through it again. And if you fail and lose your soul, it would have been better if you had never been born. Many of us still have not understood this.

God gave us two eyes, so that if one is damaged, we still have the other. Yet even if both are damaged, the world has not ended. He gave us two legs, so that if something happens to one, we still have the other. Yet even if both are damaged and must be amputated, the world has not ended. But He gave us only one soul, and if that is lost, everything is lost. As Christ said, the whole world cannot replace or redeem a single soul. He is the true Economist, the One who knows the value of every soul. Do you understand? This is more or less what the prayer says, though the subject can never be exhausted. One more petition: “You, Lord, grant me a good tongue, modest speech, and pure logismoi.”

Every good thing descends from You, O heavenly Giver of light.

As you know, the tongue was given to man so that he might glorify God and communicate with others. It should utter only what is beneficial—what will neither harm the speaker nor defile the listener. But today, I dare say, many of us use our tongues without any care. Some tell obscene jokes; others use foul language, insults, lies, slander, words of envy, or accusations. We do not have a good tongue. Is the tongue itself responsible? No, the tongue itself is not to blame.

It is an instrument given to us by God. Some people say, “I will cut out your tongue.” Do not cut out his tongue. The tongue is necessary; God gave it to us for a good purpose. Instead, see to it that the master dwelling within him is changed. Once that master is changed, the tongue that used to lie will no longer lie; the tongue that accused will no longer accuse; the tongue that blasphemed will no longer blaspheme. The tongue is not at fault. The person who uses it is at fault. The tenant within, the one governing the body, is not the right one, and that is why the tongue does not appear to be good. The tongue is like a chimney or a smokestack. If coal is burning inside, the chimney will pour out black soot.

Of course it will. So there is still coal within the soul, and that is why the tongue is not good. God placed the tongue behind the teeth so that we could bite it back. We use the words “bite your tongue” as a curse, but how often we ought willingly to bite our own tongue! We should not let it speak before we have considered what it is going to say and what the consequences will be. Many times we later go and ask forgiveness, humbling ourselves because of something we said. Why say it in the first place? Why do you not guard your tongue? Why are you so quick to speak? Why do you act out of egoism, only to humiliate yourself afterward by going to ask forgiveness? Does that mean I should not go and ask forgiveness? Of course I should go—but why commit the offense in the first place? Yet you should know that the tongue itself is not to blame. The person using it is the one who is not in order.

Let me put it more simply. Take the finest violin. If you give it to me and I play it, every mouse will flee. But when a skilled violinist takes it into his hands, he will lift your soul to the seventh heaven. He will give you a “Seven Up,” as they say in the soft-drink advertisements—he will lift you seven levels higher! The violin is not to blame; the violinist is. So if the violinist within us is Satan, he uses the tongue in this manner. We must change that tenant within us and install a good housekeeper there: the grace of the Holy Spirit. Then, with self-restraint, keeping the tongue bitten back and turned inward, we should bring it out for use only when necessary. If I were a spiritual father hearing confessions, I would impose this not only upon women, who are especially prone to it, but upon many men as well—

Unfortunately, we too have fallen into chatter even worse than the women. I would not impose a fast of no oil, no meat, no fish. I would say: do not speak. I would impose a fast of the tongue. Do not speak. Just see how hard it is not to speak. Suppose that one day, even on Great Friday, you eat meat—but do not speak. Just see what happens. Whole regiments of devils from across the Attica basin will gather upon your tongue to make you speak. Yes, try it, and you will see how difficult it is, so that we may learn to keep our tongue pure and clean, as it says here. But if, I repeat, the grace of the Holy Spirit does not help us in this, it is impossible for us to accomplish any of it. Grace is found in the Church; it is found in Holy Communion.

Holy Communion presupposes...

Όπως ξέρετε, ο κόσμος και η μόδα ζητάει πράγματα αντίθετα από εκείνα που λέγει ο Χριστός. Θα σταθείς να παλέψεις επάνω στο θέμα αυτό. Θα σωφρονιστείς. Θα έχεις ένα μοντέλο. Θα πας μπροστά σου στο τέμπλο να δεις την Παναγία, αν είσαι γυναίκα. Θα πάω εγώ να δω τον Χριστό, αν είμαι άντρας. Και θα πάρω μοντέλο από εκεί. Πώς θα ντυθώ, πώς θα είμαι, πώς θα είναι το μαλλί μου, τι θα κάνω κλπ. Πώς θα γίνει; Ο Χριστός προσθέτει τις ημέρες του ανθρώπου για να φτιάχνει τα λάθη του. Βλέπω, μέχρι σήμερα δεν ενήστευα, το θεωρούσα για τίποτα, όμως τώρα θα αρχίσω να νηστεύω. Θα τακτοποιήσω εδώ που έπεφτα. Δεν μπορώ να το φτιάξω 100%, θα το φτιάξω 80, θα το φτιάξω 70, θα το φτιάξω 60, θα το φτιάξω. Κάτι θα κάνω, θα αγωνιστώ, δεν θα πω «δεν πειράζει». Πώς δεν πειράζει; Τότε γιατί τα είπε; Γιατί Αυτός ενήστευσε; Γιατί Αυτός εγκρατεύεται;

Αν ο Χριστός δεν υπενθυμίσει στον άνθρωπο ότι αυτό είναι προς θάνατον, είναι ζημιά σου, δεν θα μπορέσει να προκόψει ο άνθρωπος. Βάλτε το λοιπόν και αυτό στην προσευχή σας και παρακαλείτε τον Χριστό να σας δείξει τις λεπτομέρειες, σε τι λείπετε, τι δεν κάνατε ακόμη σωστά και καλά. Χοντρά χοντρά δεν είναι ο χριστιανισμός. Ο χριστιανισμός είναι, όπως έχουμε πει και άλλες φορές, λεπτομέρειες. Ακούστε μια άλλη του σκέψη στη συνέχεια: «Κύριε, από μικρός αμαρτάνω». Παραδέχεται ότι αμαρτάνει από μικρός. Πολλοί και πολλές μητέρες λένε: «Α, μικρό είναι αυτό τώρα». Έτσι λέει κάποιος στον διάλογο. «Δεν χάθηκε ο κόσμος. Θα το κόψει όταν μεγαλώσει». Άλλο βλαστημεί, άλλο καταράται, άλλο βρωμολογά, άλλα πράγματα λέει, άλλο κλέβει, άλλο ψεύδεται. Για λογαριασμό τίνος γίνονται όλα αυτά τα πράγματα;

Ο σατανάς: «Για ποιο; Αυτός έκαμε αυτό και αυτό και αυτό». Θυμόσαστε ένα βράδυ που σας έλεγα κάτι για τον Όσιο Εφραίμ τον Σύρο; Επήγε αδίκως φυλακή. Και επήγε ο άγγελος και του είπε γιατί είναι φυλακή εκεί. Ότι είχε κάποτε, μικρός που έπαιζε στ' αλώνι, που απόλυσε τη μοσχάρα μιας χήρας και την πήραν και την πούλησαν. Και λέει: «Ακόμα τη χρωστάς αυτή τη μοσχάρα». «Άρα από δω σου χρωστάει», λέει, «ακόμη τη μοσχάρα αυτή. Γι' αυτό είσαι φυλακή τώρα». Οι άνθρωποι που θέλουν να σωθούνε θα υποστούνε όλους τους κατατρεγμούς της δικαιοσύνης του Θεού. Αυτοί που θέλουν να σωθούνε. Μην παραξενεύεσαι. Πολλά παράξενα πράγματα μας συμβαίνουν και δεν μπορούμε να τα δικαιολογήσουμε και λέμε να είμαστε αθώοι. Είσαι αθώος τώρα, αλλά είσαι βερεσέδια άλλα. Η δικαιοσύνη του Θεού σου ζητάει από μικρό παιδί να τακτοποιείς τα θέματά σου αυτά. Πού να επαναλαμβάνω;

κατανόηση της θέσεως και των συνθηκών της ζωής του υποδειγματική, με στοργή και συμπάθεια για τα κενά του χαρακτήρος του ειλικρινή, με αγάπη για την ψυχή του έντονη και ζωηρή. Όταν εμείς πάμε να βοηθήσουμε κάποιον ο οποίος, για τον Α ή Β λόγο, έχει αστοχήσει, έτσι πάμε; Με ταπείνωση, με αγάπη; Του αναγνωρίζουμε, του ανθρώπου αυτού, ορισμένα ελαφρυντικά; Της κόρης αυτής, της γυναικός αυτής; Πώς κατάντησε έτσι; Πώς βαδίζει σε αυτόν τον δρόμο; Ποια είναι η αιτία; Ποιος την ώθησε προς τα εκεί; Ποιος τον διευκόλυνε; Αυτά τα αναγνωρίζουμε και τον συμπονούμε; Πάμε όμορφα να μην τον πικράνουμε;
