Summary

The Sunday after Pentecost honors all saints, especially the unnamed ascetics, martyrs, righteous people, fathers, and patriarchs known fully only to God. Because sin wounds the baptized life, repentance, confession, tears, and Holy Communion restore and cleanse the soul within the Church. The lecture concludes that earthly life is preparation for judgment and the Kingdom of Heaven, so believers must repent now and seek their true homeland with God.

We now find ourselves after the events of Pentecost. Pentecost was the final part that brought to a close the whole period after Pascha, as we might say.

Pascha was the final part that brought the whole period of the Triodion to a close. During these two great periods, the Church taught everything a person needs. He need only be willing to accept it and put it into practice, and he can be certain that he will be saved. Having passed beyond the conclusion marked by Pentecost, we enter a new period. On its first Sunday, we encounter the feast known as All Saints. This feast is itself a milestone, because tomorrow we enter another period that prepares us for the feast of the Holy Apostles. From tomorrow until the feast of the Holy Apostles, there is a period of preparation, fasting, and prayer, so that we may once again celebrate these great persons, who received the light from Christ and carried it throughout the world, and especially to us. This Sunday, which stands between

the feast of the Holy Apostles and Pentecost, as you know, is dedicated to All Saints, and especially to the unnamed saints. For we also have saints known by name, whom we commemorate individually on the day of their martyrdom, and whose names many of us bear.

But there are venerable ascetics, martyrs, righteous men and women, fathers, and patriarchs whom we do not know precisely, whose names are unknown to us. We have not connected them with any particular event, and so we do not commemorate them individually. The Church therefore has the feast known as All Saints, on which she presents all of them before God as our intercessors. We call upon them as well, presenting them as friends of God, and through them we ask for mercy both in this present age and in the age to come. I want you to know that the feast of All Saints did not exist in the Church from the beginning. In fact, the occasion for establishing it was the wife of Leo the Wise, who flourished in the ninth century. Leo the Wise’s wife was named Theophano, and our Church commemorates her on December 16. Those of you who can find something about her should read it. You will be greatly edified by this empress. Although her husband had separated from her and was living unlawfully, when the empress reposed, he knew what kind of life she had led and regarded her as a saint. Only a saintly woman could have lived as she did and responded as she did to her husband’s misconduct. And so he built a magnificent church in Constantinople.

The Patriarch intervened and called him to account, saying: “Emperor, you have not acted properly. You hastened to proclaim your wife a saint and to build a church in her honor, though we do not yet know whether she is a saint. But if she is a saint, the Church will not treat her unjustly. It must first be shown that she is a saint. She must become established in the consciousness of the faithful, or her relics must stream myrrh, or she must work miracles, or her body must be revealed incorrupt, whole, and intact. Once such things have been demonstrated, the Church will number her among the saints. Therefore, do not rush, as emperor, to do something that the Church will do at the proper time.”

The emperor understood, abandoned the idea, and no longer insisted that the church be dedicated in honor of Saint Theophano. But then he said something from which this feast arose: “Then let us dedicate it and name it in honor of All Saints,” with this thought: “If Theophano is a saint, let her be numbered among the saints.” Thus, if Theophano truly was a saint, she too would be included among them. And from that time onward, we have had the feast of All Saints. Among these saints, one may perhaps find saints even greater than those known to us. Their holiness may be hidden, but that does not mean it is hidden in its quality before

the eyes of God. No. God alone knows which saint should be revealed and which should not. Not all saints are revealed. Many saints have been made known to us. Do not be scandalized by this; it belongs to the judgments of God. As for those whom He has revealed, whom we now know through their miracles and their lives, all is well; may they be blessed. “Your prayers, Saint Nicholas. Your prayers, Saint Spyridon, Saint Demetrios,” and so forth. But there may be far greater saints, possessing greater boldness before God, who have never been revealed. They remain hidden, resting in the Kingdom of God. Only when we go up there and are counted worthy of the portion on the right—for those on the left

have no opportunity to see them, for they have their punishments in Hell—if we receive the portion on the right, then we shall see what a vast multitude of saints surrounds God, people of whom we had never even heard. Apart from certain people who know neither why they came into this world, nor where they came, nor where they are going, everyone else is concerned with holiness. The first group says, “You go and become a saint, and leave me alone.” But where are you going? And if I become holy, what more will I have become than what I was created to become? For the commandment is: “Be holy.” Therefore, if I become a saint, I become nothing beyond

what I was created to become. Man is created to become a saint, and his holiness begins in a small way on the day he is baptized. From the day he is baptized, from the first day he comes out of the font, he is a little saint. His holiness then continues to grow and reaches as far as martyrdom, beyond which there is nothing higher. His blood becomes a second washing, now spotless, and he remains so for eternity. That is why, when the priest comes out with the Holy Chalice, bearing the Body and Blood of Christ, he says: “The Holy Gifts are for the holy.” The Holy Gifts are for the baptized, for the pure, for those who are undefiled. He does not say, “The Holy Gifts are for Saint Spyridon, Saint George, and Saint Nicholas.” He does not say that. He means those who are here. Those saints have finished their course; their struggle is complete.

Their dealings now concern us; they intercede for us. All of us have been little saints from the day we were baptized. Some of us, of course, have cast off the white garment the Church gave us at Baptism. At that time, through the person of our godparent, we made a confession: we said that we renounced Satan and united ourselves to Christ. But when we grew older, we reversed the situation and began to say, “We renounce You, Christ, and unite ourselves to you, Satan.” Today people prefer the devil and want Christ less. They do not want Christ today because He reproves their unlawful way of life. He reproves their unlawful household, their unlawful bed, and their unlawful dealings.

He reproves their fashions and many other things. So they cast Christ out, together with His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. In certain times of need they may say, “My Christ, help me. My Most Holy Theotokos, help me.” But once the need and the storm have passed, out goes the Most Holy Theotokos again, out go the saints, and out goes Christ. Man’s commandment and mission in this world is to become a saint. But he cannot become a saint by himself, nor can other people make him one. Some may say, “He is a saint,” or a person may think that, compared with others, he himself is a saint. He is mistaken. The certificates he issues for himself, or that others issue for him, are valid nowhere. Saints are made only within the Church. Holiness begins, as I told you, with Baptism and reaches its fulfillment in martyrdom. There is no person who lives without sinning. Whether in word, deed, or thought, man sins and will continue to sin.

Indeed, Job, in an emphatic expression, says that man drinks iniquity like water. Just as he drinks a glass of water, so man drinks iniquity every day: through his eyes, his ears, his taste, his smell, and his touch. Through these five pairs of oxen in the parable, Satan enters him and stains his immortal soul. Unless a person understands this and makes use of the Mysteries of the Church—especially the Second Baptism, for there are two baptisms, one in the baptismal font and the other beneath the priest’s stole—he cannot be cleansed. When a person sins after Baptism, there is another baptism: the baptism of metanoia and Holy Confession, as Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the brother of Saint Basil the Great, says.

“A single falling tear is equal to the washing of Baptism.” It is as though you were baptized again when you repented, made your confession, and shed even one tear, saying, “Yes, I did not act rightly.” When a person lives far from these Mysteries—whether he was baptized but afterward does not confess despite continuing to sin, or was never baptized, or has no relationship with Holy Communion, although only the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin—that person has failed. It would have been better if he had never been born. He was of no use and offered nothing. Even the person whom the world considers the greatest offers nothing and is of no use to the world if he is going to lose his soul. The central concern is man’s immortal soul. This is what Christ tends and heals here in the Church. Here is the inn. Here man...

having fallen among robbers outside—in his home, in the marketplace, in the factory, at work, and elsewhere—falls into the hands of Satan through his tongue, his nous, his hand, and in so many other ways. He must come here to have the wounds inflicted upon his soul treated. And it is from here that he will become a saint. If he does not live within the Church through the Mysteries of the Church, and especially through metanoia, Holy Confession, and Holy Communion, then in vain does he hear at his funeral, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” His way is not blessed at all; it is evil, exceedingly evil, because it does not lead him to a place of rest—“for a place of rest has been prepared for you”—but to a place of evil, from which he will never free himself from the hands of Satan. It is a struggle.

It is a beautiful struggle, a good struggle. We have not yet even begun to struggle. Some began, but then stopped. Those who press forward resolutely despite every adversity, obstacle, and stumbling block placed before them are few enough to count on one’s fingers. For a person is tempted first by his flesh, second by the world, and third by Satan. Satan comes third. We do more than the devil himself. We go far beyond him, and indeed he takes many things from us and teaches them to others. Today especially, in this society, we go further than Satan in wicked deeds that merit Hell. Therefore, I say, if a person becomes holy, he fulfills his purpose. If you become holy, then well done—you have succeeded and advanced. Otherwise, you have failed.

And so we mock those who struggle. Let us not mock the young woman who has no boyfriend. Let us not mock the woman who has no lover, or the man who has no mistress. Let us not mock the young man who remains a virgin until Holy Matrimony. Let us not mock the mothers and fathers who welcome the children God gives them and do not put an end to their married life and childbearing simply when they themselves decide they have had enough. Let us not mock those who fast, those who pray, those who go to Church morning and evening, those who confess, and those who receive Holy Communion. Let us call them blessed, admire them, and strive to become like them. For one day all these people will stand as witnesses against us. Today, of course, they bear their cross in this world, but tomorrow they will receive their crown. For a person to become a saint, my beloved,

he must first succeed in overcoming that beast called the world. You heard what Christ said today: “Whoever confesses Me before men, him I also will confess before My Father who is in heaven.” But what are these people before whom we must confess Him? What are human beings? Beasts. A human being is not merely one kind of beast. A fox is a fox, a dog is a dog, a lion is a lion, a tiger is a tiger, and a pig is a pig. Each has one particular trait. But we are foxes, pigs, dogs—everything at once. We are an entire menagerie. Man is a great beast. And today people do not fear God; they fear other people. They are afraid of the world. What will the world say?

“My daughter is not going to wear trousers? What will the world say?” But what will Christ say? That does not concern them. What do you mean, “What will the world say?” “People will misunderstand me if I do not take the sweet today, even though it is a fast day.” But what about Christ? Whom are you afraid of offending? Whom would you rather offend, Christ or the world? I think it is better for the world to take offense at you than for Christ to take offense at you. Today a mother or father is criticized for welcoming all the children God gives them. “But can people do such things today? What age are we living in?” And because a person fears the world, fears his colleague at the office, or fears who knows whom—even within his own family—he says, “I do not agree, God. I do not want this partnership. I want no part in it.” The decision should be: “I will do whatever You say.” But what does man do instead? He rebels against God.

He confesses Him. Are you going to do what is right? Have you decided to do what is right? Then prepare your soul for temptation. A thousand years before Christ, the Wisdom of Sirach wrote: “My child, if you come to serve the Lord God, prepare your soul for temptation.” Do you want to become holy? You will have to pass through this menagerie called the world. Another says that, since you live in the world, you must take nothing from it, and you must not allow the world to stain you or sweep you away. Go and ask the fish in the sea, and they will answer you. What answer will they give? That they have lived in the sea for twenty years and yet remain unsalted. From that you may understand something.

“You remain unsalted in here so that I may teach you, my noble one, that you too must live in the world, within all this salt, and yet remain unsalted.” Paul expresses the same truth in a more theological way when he says: “You will be in the world, but you will not belong to the world or to worldly things. You will be among the sexually immoral, but you will not be sexually immoral. You will be among thieves, but you will not be thieves; among adulterers, but you will not be adulterers; among the profane, but you will not be profane.” This means that you are in a coal yard: even if you do not become covered in soot, you will certainly be spattered, but let it not be through any fault of your own. Someone says, “Do you know what destruction the television brought when it entered our home? It ruined our children and ruined us as well.” Whose fault is that? Is it the angels’ fault? Is it God’s fault?

You can smash it—so why do you keep it?

For thousands of years, did people not become saints without television? Did people not become wise? Did they not become scientists? What does it offer them today? To show where the fault lies by comparing it with what is good, let us see which is preferable. And you should not simply take a hammer and smash it; you must first break with it in your own mind. Smash it—do not sell it and do not give it away. Will you sell it? No. Smash it into a million pieces, so that there will be one less instrument of the devil fishing for souls. It is, I dare say, a most perfect invention of the wisdom of God, because it was made by human minds, and someone created those minds; they did not come into being by themselves. Science comes from God. Yet Satan has taken this invention into his hands.

What does it mean? It can bring things from the ends of the earth right before you, into your own room. It can tell you about so many things that, even if you lived for a million years, you could never travel to see them all. But unfortunately, it will show you one good thing and 999 evil things. And because this instrument too has fallen into the hands of wicked and corrupt people, that is precisely why it is evil today. The best has become evil. With all the wisdom he possesses, a person must discern that this is poison in the home and remove it. And yet, although he wants to become a saint, lights candles before the saints, and acknowledges them, he does not find the courage to take radical action in this matter so that he too may become a saint.

For otherwise, how will he become a saint? When he sits before that demon-box and it bombards him one-sidedly for one, two, or three hours, speaking in an uninterrupted monologue, it will lead him, little by little, exactly where it wants him to go. Even if he wants to answer, he cannot. A man may be so full of pride that he is always ready to interrupt someone else who is speaking, yet there he sits while the other side overwhelms him without giving him any opportunity to respond. How will he prevail against Satan like that? And what about God? If our children have become corrupt and learned so many things, were we not the ones who brought those things into our homes? Who brought them? Did the angels bring them? We ourselves did, so that we would not appear to be behind the times. ‘Could we possibly fall behind?’ And now we will replace it and get a color television. Who wants that? Does God want it? God does not want it. We do.

A living room without one—but the world will call you old-fashioned and backward; people will say all sorts of things about you. Can you endure that? This is why Christ says, ‘You will confess Me before men.’ It is a fast day, and they mock you while everyone else eats on Wednesdays, Fridays, and during Great Lent. They ridicule you. Do you have the strength and the will to struggle and confess your faith? ‘Gentlemen, forgive me. I did not know I was among Jews; I thought I was among Christians. Today is Wednesday. I can neither serve this food to you nor accept it from you. I will not do it. Today is Wednesday. On another day I will slaughter the animal for meat; on another day I will accept whatever you offer me. Please forgive me. I thought I was going to a religious home, at least an Orthodox Greek home. I did not know I was going to a Jewish home. Forgive me; I will not come again.’ You will confess your faith. You will confess it, and you will not put that food into your mouth. How else can it be done?

Otherwise, tomorrow they will go before the Lord and say to Him, ‘What are You telling me, Lord? I knew someone who, just last night, kept saying that You are the holy God, yet he never fasted, he even blasphemed You, and he never came down to receive Holy Communion. How can You condemn me like this? I knew someone who attended Church and did this, a woman in the Philoptochos who did that, and a preacher who preached but did this,’ and so on. Tomorrow that person will bring them as witnesses for his defense, and woe to us if, because of the way we lived, we have caused other souls to cling to our necks and drag us down with them. I am only giving examples; I do not know any particular people. We are simply discussing what it means to confess Christ before men. How did you turn the girl into a man? Tell me. Tomorrow Katina will cry out against you. And what will that be like? Oh, what a terrible thing it will be!

And you, my young man, have you now taken to carrying a woman’s handbag? How have you made yourself into a woman? Do you have the right to do that? Did God not say fifteen hundred years before Christ that if a woman wears a man’s clothing, it is an abomination in His sight, something loathsome? And did God not say the same if a man wears a woman’s clothing? Did God not speak plainly and deliberately about this fifteen hundred years before Christ? Read Deuteronomy 22:5 and see what it says. The things you see now were foretold in writing—they were written down—yet the human mind refuses to accept them. As I told you, people do not want Christ. We want to become saints, and we honor Saint John the Forerunner. ‘Of course, honor to you, Forerunner—but I want to live my own way.’ He would say, ‘I am not interested in your candle; I want your life.’ For the remembrance of the saints means the imitation of the saints, and the remembrance of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) means the imitation of the Most Holy Theotokos. Why do you light a candle for me while rejecting the way I lived? Saint Nicholas would not nurse at his mother’s breast on Wednesdays and Fridays.

From morning until evening, he would wait until the sun had set and the day had changed before he would eat. So how can you bring meat into your home on the feast of Saint Nicholas? And how can the others come and devour it? How, then, are you honoring the saint? This is just one example. We must therefore confess our faith. The world is a great beast, and a person is called to confess Christ within the family, through his character, and in his work—in every part of life. We must confess Him if we too desire one day to rise from the candle stand, where we are like little candles, to the great chandelier; to rise from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant. We all sin. There is still room for metanoia (repentance), confession, and Holy Communion, through which we prepare for the Kingdom of Heaven. Through the intercessions of the known and unknown saints, I pray that this Kingdom may be granted to the whole world and to us as well. Amen. And now, of course, after these feasts,

we stand before the feast of the Holy Apostles.

Christ spoke to us in due order, after first choosing two pairs of Apostles.

He preached a remarkable sermon, yet although two thousand years have passed, people still refuse to learn its message, which consists of only a few words.

The message is: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ These are words also spoken by His Forerunner, John. People have learned many things in this world—especially in our own day—that do not edify them. There is one thing a person must learn: how to return to the homeland for which he longs. When we fall asleep—not the natural sleep, but the sleep of death—it is said that these words are chanted over our heads:

‘Grant me the homeland for which I long; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.’ This is a plea that should become a reality for every person. Our purpose in this world is not to enjoy the world, but to prepare for the life to come, for the homeland we long for. A person who does not reflect upon this and labor toward it must be considered a failure, however successful other people may think him to be. A person has one purpose in this world: to prepare to return to his homeland.

‘For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come,’ says the Apostle. In other words, man was not made for this earth; he was made for Heaven. A person does not come into the world in order to live; he comes in order to die, and he dies in order to live. We have not reflected deeply on this. We see only this material world and cling to it like oysters to a rock, even though man did not come for this place; he came for the other. He came here simply to be tested and must strive to pass, because if he fails his test here during his brief stay, it would have been better for him never to have been born, whoever he may have been in the world and whatever worldly glory he may have enjoyed.

The lesson is simple, but man refuses to apply himself to it. Man has landed on the moon, as you know, but he has still not come down to earth. He does not want you to speak to him about death, the life to come, or the Kingdom of Heaven. He prefers to be like a fly sitting upon the filth of this world. Man does not want to take flight. Yet whether we like it or not, the reality is that one day we will come down to earth, and many of us will make a very rough landing. Whether we want to or not, my dear ones, let us think deeply about this: we are walking toward our grave. I have been speaking for five minutes. Five times sixty beats of my heart makes three hundred—three hundred heartbeats, three hundred steps toward my grave.

And you are taking steps toward yours. You cannot turn back. It is impossible. Think deeply about it; sit down and consider it. ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ It need not be the day of the Second Coming. If I depart this life now, then for me it is at hand; it is finished. The Kingdom of Heaven has come for me. Either I will go to meet Him or He will come to meet me. At some point we will stand face-to-face, whether we believe it or not, whether we want it or not. God has signed no contract with anyone specifying when he will die. He takes a person whenever He wills, unless that person chooses to die by his own hand. What He has firmly decreed is that He will judge him. That He has declared. He has also told us that He will come again.

We said it earlier in the Creed: ‘And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.’ It makes no difference whether we believe it or not. Before the Ascension, He gave us this message through the two men in white: ‘This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same manner as you saw Him go into heaven.’ And through Paul at the Pnyx in Athens, He gave the message to us Greeks: ‘Having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent,’ because He has appointed a day, He has set the date of the trial, and He will judge the whole world in righteousness. If you can manage to escape death, then go on—do as you please. Tilt your hat jauntily and live however you like. Indulge your flesh, enjoy the world, blaspheme God, and do whatever you want—if you are going to escape death. But if you have reflected seriously upon it...

You will not escape death. So come to your senses and make peace with Christ now, today. Tomorrow belongs neither to you nor to me. A person who is not at peace with Christ is foolish—forgive me for saying so—he is a fool. ‘Fool! This very night your soul will be required of you.’ If ever there were a time when a person ought to be at peace with Christ, it is today, when there are thousands of ways to die, when entire families perish and are wiped out every day. Today, more than ever, we ought to have made peace with Christ. Yet people do not want to make peace with Him. Man’s purpose on earth is to become a saint, not to become a farmer.

Nor is it to become a scientist, a prime minister, or a king. His purpose is to become a saint. If he accomplishes all those other things but does not become a saint, he has failed, and it would have been better for him never to have been born. This is what Christ said of Judas, who failed: it would have been better for him not to have been born. The birth of a human being is a joyful event. Do not follow the example of parents today who avoid having children; they do not know what they are doing. They do not understand that children are beings who will exist eternally, whether they throw them into the garbage or bring them into the world. People invest their money in apartments, cars, color televisions, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and every kind of appliance. Yet it is their children who will remain for eternity, while all those things will pass away.

The children will remain. Be careful not to look at things in the wrong way. The soul is everything, and Christ places the center of gravity upon the soul. One day He will require a person’s soul, and He asks nothing from him except metanoia (repentance). ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ Man was destined to become a prince, yet he refuses. He does not want to become a prince freely. He does not want to repent or confess. He does not want to receive the Body and Blood of Christ so that his own blood may be transformed, so that the royal Blood of God may be transfused into the counterfeit blood of Adam that flows in his veins. He does not want it. Man is a fool; he does not know what he is doing. He has never wanted to reflect upon where he came from.

He came into this world, but where is he going? He weeps over a plate of kollyva. Will they not be making kollyva for you tomorrow? Will they not be making kollyva for me tomorrow? Why do you weep, why do you beat your breast, why do you wear black, why do you mourn? You ought to rejoice with the joy of someone who has departed from wickedness, from hatred, from cancer, from so many things—from wars, from everything. Yet you weep and dress in black over circumstances that bring joy to others. How, then, will you thank God? Even in the face of this death, say to Him: “I thank You very much, because if You have put Your hand to this, You know something more than I do. I thank You very much.” We have never reflected deeply on these things. As I told you, we have fastened ourselves to this world like oysters, thinking that we came here to live, when in fact we came here to die.

We die in order to live. “Of Your Kingdom there shall be no end”; “His Kingdom shall have no end.” Reflect on this, brothers and sisters. God does not ask for our money. God does not ask for our wives or our husbands. He does not ask for our property, our jobs, or our wallets. He asks for our sins, so that He may give us the Kingdom of Heaven. But we offer Him candles; we bring Him oil, kollyva, and prosphora. We do not give Him our sins, and we do not change our lives. We have accomplished nothing. We have failed. We have failed. What moves heaven is the repentance of a sinner. Heaven rejoices “over one sinner who repents.”

Does it say anywhere else that heaven rejoices? It does not rejoice because we make a great golden polyeleos, or a golden Holy Chalice, or adorn these things with gold. Heaven does not smile at that. Heaven smiles when people repent. A person’s metanoia—his repentance—is what gives his life true worth and brings salvation to his soul. Then heaven rejoices. Then my angel rejoices—the angel who stands beside me with his head bowed because of my wickedness, my sins of the flesh, and a thousand other sins, mourning beside me. If I could go out with sacks and gather up all the sins present here today, from the Holy Altar to the candle stand, I could load the entire British fleet. Yet we have come, supposedly, to pray for ourselves and for our departed loved ones, when today we should all have come after Holy Confession and should all receive Holy Communion, so that we may pray for ourselves.

And so that we may pray for the departed as well. That person is in the hands of God. But if you are not reconciled with God, if your sins stand in the way, how much of your prayer will ascend to heaven? God is indebted to no one. What is needed, my beloved, is a change of life. Yet this escapes us, and we invent a thousand other fashions and ways of pleasing God, except for the one right way. Today people will receive some fine keepsake from the departed, take it in their hands, and say, “May God forgive him.” “Really?” Christ will say. “You ask Me to forgive him, but not yourself, though you carry an enormous weight of sins? First pray for yourself, generous fellow, and then for the other person.” “But I love him,” someone says. “That is why I came.” “I love her; that is why I attended the funeral.” Really? If you truly love that person, you must first be reconciled with God.

Then go and beseech God to judge that person mercifully and to improve his condition, if he has not gone where he ought to have gone. Let us not allow Satan to deceive us. All these outward observances are beautiful and good. These gifts and offerings to the Church, and all such things, are beautiful and good. But unless we first offer up our sins and leave them behind, God accepts none of these things. They all belong to Him already.

The olive groves that produce the oil are His. The beehives are His, and the gold is His. He wants something that we ourselves have produced, something of our own. But the only thing we produce is sin, and that is precisely what we hold on to and persist in cultivating. We refuse to give it to Him. And so, one day, the curtain will fall for us as well. What will happen then? We will stand face-to-face with the justice of Christ.

Submit yourselves! Even if bishops come and read prayers over our heads, and no matter how many memorial services we hold, how much black we wear, or how much we weep, none of it can change our account if we do not depart from this life with everything set in order and that account settled. No one can alter it afterward. We will never cease praying for both the living and the departed, but everything depends on how willing we ourselves are to abandon sin.

This is the work of the Church. She transforms people: from earthly she makes them spiritual, from temporary she makes them eternal, and from ordinary people she makes them new people. But when does this happen? It happens when a person comes into contact with Christ; when he comes to the Church in metanoia—repentant, reconciled, and having made his Holy Confession; when he is ready, and when the priest calls him to draw near with fear of God.

If he has faith and love, let him draw near. Then Christ Himself imparts Himself to that person, and the person is not afraid even if he dies at that very moment, because “he who believes in Me, though he may die, shall live”; and “he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him”; and “I will raise him up at the last day.” This is the purpose of human life. Keep these few things, and fear nothing—not wars, not earthquakes. Fear sin, because sin brings all these things upon us. Sin causes earthquakes; sin causes wars; sin causes cancers, calamities, and outbreaks of death. Sin must be removed from our midst. This is the purpose of the Church, beginning with Baptism, which cleanses us from ancestral sin.

Then there is Holy Confession, which cleanses the sins committed after Baptism, and Holy Communion, through which the blood of Christ cleanses us from every sin. This is the work of the Church, and this is why the Church must exist and must be preserved. Yet today we do not love the Church, and this is shown by the fact that we give neither our children nor ourselves to the Church.

Today a woman has to serve in the Church. But what place does a woman have inside the Holy Altar? Where are our children? Ladies and gentlemen, where are your children? Christ will ask you for your children at His judgment seat. Where are your children? You gave them the finest education—but did you educate them in Christ? You placed apartments and cars in their hands—but did you give them Christ? In the past there was a certain...

There was an advertisement for petroleum products that said, “Put a tiger in your engine.” By the tiger it meant a certain oil that was good for the engine. So they will put a tiger in the engine—but whom will they put behind the wheel? Whom will they put at the steering wheel? You give your child money; you give him property and a car. But what have you put inside him? Who is directing him at the wheel? What have you placed in his soul? You have not benefited him at all. He went away to live like a human being, you say. But he does not live like a human being if he has departed from Christ. Only the person who lives close to Christ, who lives in the Church, attends the services, fasts, practices self-restraint, has children if married, receives Holy Communion, and makes his Holy Confession—only that person may truly be called spiritually fulfilled. The other merely imagines that he is living as he should.

He is not truly human, as Saint Anthony the Great says, nor is he rational. The rational person is the one who is willing to correct his error. Today we are filled with pride. Everyone is at fault except us. The priests are at fault, the bishops are at fault, the Freemasons are at fault, and so are everyone else—the Turks, the Americans, the Russians. We alone, apparently, are not at fault. Yet we alone are at fault, because if we were in right order, everyone around us would serve our good. Reflect a little on these things, if you will. The Church does not open her gates without purpose. She wants to receive people as ravens and send them forth as doves.

The old Ark received ravens and sent forth ravens. But the new Ark receives ravens and sends forth doves.

She receives goats and sends forth sheep. However you wish me to put it, the Church transforms people. Therefore, if a person comes to the Church but does not leave with a renewed nous—the spiritual mind—with new resolutions to change his life and to settle the outstanding affairs of both his soul and his material life, then it does him no good to remain alive. As long as he lives that way, he only adds more sins and will be condemned all the more. It would be better for the thread of his life to be cut sooner, so that his condemnation might be less. Our resolution, therefore, must be to love the Church. We should not attend only because it is a feast day, but always—at Vespers and Matins as well, if possible. We must offer people to the Church: chanters, helpers, and priests. We will come to understand this.

We will understand the harm we have done to ourselves when we die and there is no priest to conduct our funeral, no priest to prepare kollyva and serve a memorial for us, and no priest to take out a particle for us at the Prothesis, place it into the blood of the Lamb, and say, “Wash away, O Lord, by Your precious blood, the sins of Your servants.” Then we will understand. The bishop does not manufacture priests. A bishop once said to people who approached him: “Do you want me to give you bread—that is, the Bread given through the priest? Then give me flour to knead. Give me wheat. Give me your children.” You make them military officers, chemists, and lawyers. You set them up in comfortable careers, you make them this and that. Why not make one of them a priest, the greatest ministry there is? There is no greater title.

There is no greater title than that of the priest, regardless of how we have degraded it through our words, our writing, and our behavior. Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, explaining the place of the clergy with simplicity, says this: “If you ever find yourself before a king and a priest, give the place of honor to the priest. If you ever find yourself before an angel and a priest, give the place of honor to the priest, not to the angel, because what the priest can do, the angel cannot do.” Yet we do not even consider it an honor to give people to the Church. Nor do we respect the clergy as we ought, or support them so that the clergy may continue, even though they have faults. We will pay for this, because as we sow, so shall we reap. Woe because of the tongues of certain men and women who...

God has fashioned little children to love the Church from an early age—to run and kiss the priest’s hand, to run to the holy icons, and so forth. Yet through our unbelief and atheism we uproot this love from within them. Woe to such people on the day of judgment, especially when they have the audacity not to confess that they have committed a spiritual abortion.

There is a place for everyone in the Kingdom of Heaven. We must deeply love the Church and her Mysteries, especially Holy Confession to a priest—not confession before the icons, not to our master Saint George, not to the Most Holy Theotokos, and not out amid the forty waves. No. Neither the Most Holy Theotokos nor Christ forgives sins in this way. Only the clergy have been given authority to absolve sins. You must go to the priest, to that humble little priest who received the command: “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed.” If a person does these things, he may be certain that he too is preparing an entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven, which I pray may be granted to one another and to all. Amen.

το πρώτον να κατορθώσει να νικήσει αυτό το θηρίο που λέγεται κόσμος. Ακούσατε τι είπε σήμερα ο Χριστός: «Όστις ομολογήσει εν εμοί έμπροσθεν των ανθρώπων, ομολογήσω καγώ εν αυτώ έμπροσθεν του Πατρός μου του εν ουρανοίς». Μα τι είναι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι, που πρέπει να Τον ομολογήσουν; Τι είναι οι άνθρωποι; Θηρία. Ένας άνθρωπος δεν είναι απλώς ένα θηρίο. Η αλεπού είναι αλεπού, ο σκύλος είναι σκύλος, ο λέων λέων, τίγρης τίγρης, ο χοίρος χοίρος. Έχουν από μία ιδιότητα. Εμείς και αλεπούδες είμαστε και χοίροι είμαστε και σκύλοι είμαστε και γουρούνια είμαστε, τα πάντα είμαστε εμείς. Ολόκληρο θηριοτροφείο είμαστε εμείς. Θηρίο μεγάλο ο άνθρωπος. Και σήμερα οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι θεοφοβούμενοι, είναι ανθρωποφοβούμενοι. Φοβούνται τον κόσμο. Τι θα πει ο κόσμος;

«Είσαι ανάλατο μέσα εδώ, για να διδάξω εσένα, το βασιλιά μου, ότι και εσύ θα είσαι μέσα στον κόσμο, μες στην αλμύρα αυτή, και πρέπει να μείνεις ανάλατος». Το λέγει άλλως θεωρητικότερα ο Παύλος, όταν λέγει: «Θα είστε μέσα στον κόσμο και δεν θα είστε με τον κόσμο, με τα κοσμικά. Θα είστε μέσα στους πόρνους και δεν θα είστε πόρνοι. Θα είστε μέσα στους κλέφτες και δεν θα είστε κλέφτες, μες στους μοιχούς και δεν θα είστε μοιχοί, μες στους βέβηλους και δεν θα είστε βέβηλοι». Αυτό πάει να πει: εδώ είναι καρβουνιάρικα και, αν δεν λερωθείς, θα πιτσιλιστείς οπωσδήποτε, αλλά να μην είσαι υπαίτιος. «Ξέρετε», λέει, «τι καταστροφή μάς έκαμε η τηλεόραση στο σπίτι που ήρθε; Μας κατέστρεψε τα παιδιά, κατέστρεψε τον εαυτό μας». Ποιος σου φταίει; Σου φταίνε οι άγγελοι; Σου φταίει ο Θεός;

Μπορείς να τη σπάσεις, και γιατί τη φυλάς;

Ένα σαλόνι, αλλά ο κόσμος θα σε πει ντεμοντέ, θα σε πει οπισθοδρομικό, θα σου πει... Αντέχεις να το περάσεις αυτό; Γι’ αυτό λέει: «Θα με ομολογήσεις ενώπιον των ανθρώπων». Είναι νηστεία και σε ειρωνεύονται, και οι άλλοι τρώνε την Τετάρτη, την Παρασκευή, τη Σαρακοστή. Σε ειρωνεύονται. Έχεις τη δύναμη και τη θέληση να παλέψεις, να ομολογήσεις; «Κύριοι, με συγχωρείτε. Δεν ήξερα ότι είμαι μεταξύ Εβραίων. Είμαι μεταξύ Χριστιανών. Σήμερα είναι Τετάρτη. Ούτε μπορώ να σας σερβίρω ούτε μπορώ να δεχτώ να με σερβίρετε. Δεν το δέχομαι. Είναι Τετάρτη σήμερα. Μια άλλη μέρα το κρέας να σφάξω, μια άλλη μέρα να δεχτώ ό,τι μου δώσετε. Με συγχωρείτε πάρα πολύ. Ενόμισα ότι πάω σε σπίτι θρησκευτικό, σε σπίτι τουλάχιστον Ορθόδοξο, ελληνικό. Διότι πάω σε εβραϊκό, δεν ήξερα. Με συγχωρείτε, δεν θα ξαναέρθω». Θα ομολογήσεις, θα ομολογήσεις, δεν θα το βάλεις στο στόμα σου. Πώς θα γίνει;
