Summary
The Pentecostarion guides the Church from Pascha to Pentecost, proclaiming Christ’s Resurrection and divinity as the foundation of human salvation. The Samaritan woman humbly acknowledges the truth, becomes Saint Photini, and leads her relatives toward baptism, holiness, and martyrdom. The lecture concludes by commending devotion to the Theotokos, especially the Akathist and Paraklesis, as a source of protection, repentance, and help through her intercessions.

We are still within this cycle, which is called the Pentecost cycle. Just as there was the cycle of the Triodion, which began with the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee and ended on Saturday night with the Resurrection, so from the Resurrection another period began. It will end at Pentecost and is called Pentecost because it numbers fifty days. Each period has its own lessons for us who desire, in one way or another, to be saved. Today we are on the fifth Sunday after Pascha.
If we pay attention, we will see that we are on the fifth Sunday. The enduring, central, and most serious truth concerning the salvation of man is the divinity of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus. If Christ did not rise, or if Christ is not God, there is no salvation. But Glory to God: He both rose and is God. This is what our Church seeks to demonstrate during this period: the Resurrection of Jesus and the divinity of Jesus. The day of the Resurrection spoke to us about the Resurrection. The first Sunday after the Resurrection presented us with a witness who had doubted the Resurrection—Thomas, who
was struck as if by lightning when Jesus caught him at a moment he did not expect and told him to put forth his finger and not be unbelieving, but believing. Thomas is both a witness in defense of the faith and a witness against every modern movement in every age.
The second Sunday presented the women who went to anoint Him and returned with the myrrh still in their hands, because they found an empty tomb and angels, and heard: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” This assures us that, since our Leader has risen, we who believe in Him will also rise one day. For I believe that the most serious question for man is whether the grave is his end or the beginning of another life. And for those of us who pay attention, it is also encouraging that the only founder of a religion whose tomb is empty is Jesus—and the tomb of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, is empty as well. All the other so-called founders of religions remain bound in their burial shrouds. Only the tomb of Jesus, the Crucified Nazarene, is empty, along with that of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, at Gethsemane in Israel. This, then, is our assurance that we too shall rise, since our Leader has risen. But He was also God, of course. How is this proven? By His works. The works of Jesus reveal His divinity. That is why last Sunday the Church presented Him before a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years and whom He restored to action with a single word. This is not the work of a mere man.
No scientist, nor all the scientists together, could accomplish such a work. To set a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years back on his feet with a single word is beyond human power; it is divine. The Church deliberately presented this in order to prove from His works that Christ is also God. Today she presents Him before a soul that is paralyzed. The other day she presented Him before a paralyzed body; today she presents Him before a paralyzed soul, known as the Samaritan woman. I do not know whether you noticed what happened. In just one encounter, the woman who had once been in darkness became Photini—the radiant one. The woman who had once been a sinner became a saint, a Saint, through a single encounter with Christ at a well there in Samaria,
a well that remains there to this day. My beloved, generally speaking, man does not want God. He wants neither His Gospel nor His Church, because they expose his lawless way of life. That is precisely why he does not want Him. And it is always Christ who takes the first step toward man’s salvation. Today He arranged this meeting, knowing as God that at midday this sinful woman would come to the well. He went ahead of her and waited there. He was the One who began the conversation by asking her for water, and from this the whole discussion followed. Her life was revealed, and He revealed His identity. Examine yourselves: how did you come to be here in the Church?
Was it simply because you chose to? No. In one way or another—through some circumstance or event, through mourning, a grave illness, an earthquake, an epidemic, a war, financial ruin, or some personal disaster—He compelled us to begin coming to the Church. He takes the first step. He is the One who persists and desires man’s salvation. Yet even if man desires salvation in his own way, today Christ showed that He does not compromise. If we regard this place today as the well in Samaria, and we come here to draw water and be refreshed, what will happen? Christ will put a question to us. You come, and you are welcome to come.
You ask Him and say, “Give me this water.” But Christ will immediately warn us and ask, “Where will you put it?” After their conversation, this woman also asked Him to give her the water so that she would no longer have to come and labor to draw it. He did not give it to her. “Go first,” He said, “call your husband and bring him here.” All well and good—but there is an unresolved matter between us: six unlawful relationships. When the woman answered that she had no husband, Christ revealed to us that she had had six men up to that point. “You have spoken the truth,” He said, “when you say that you have no husband, for you have had five, and the sixth man you now have is not your husband.” Then what is he to me? He is my adulterous partner, my partner in fornication, the man who corrupts me.
He is not my husband. Anything unlawful, anything not blessed by Christ, cannot be regarded as a Mystery, as a true union, or as something blessed by God. We deceive ourselves if we think otherwise. If Christ chooses to speak with us here, at this well of the Church, He will speak to us about many things before giving us His grace. Yet we imagine that we can command God, pressure God, or obtain His grace by stealth. His grace cannot be stolen, and Christ does not compromise. “Go,” He will tell you, “and call your sins to come here. Go and bring Me the people with whom you are living unlawfully. Go and bring Me your bank deposits, your money, and everything you possess, so that we may see whether they were acquired lawfully, rightly, morally, and by the sweat of your brow.
Show Me your bank account and what you do in your home. Show Me your bed. Show Me the life you are living, and then I will consider your request.” Are we prepared to do that? Instead, we would presume to interrogate Him. We do not possess the goodness of this woman. She had lost the honor of her body, but she had not lost the capacity to feel shame in her face, in her cheeks. People often say, “Do you not blush?” But how can one blush? Is it easy for anyone to blush today? It is not easy today, because Christ demands that man set his life in order, and man must look Him straight in the face and admit the truth. “Yes, Lord,” she says, “You are a prophet. Yes, it is just as You say.”
We would have said to Him, “Who told You that? Be careful what You say. Who told You?” and so on and so forth. How could we ever say, “Yes, that is how it is”? It is difficult for man to acknowledge his Fall. Someone may ask me, “Where did she find such courage? Where did she find such a sense of shame?” We know that in rural areas people—housewives, as we say—go for water in the morning or in the cool of the evening. No one goes at midday, especially at twelve o’clock, when even the snakes are being scorched and the temperature reaches forty-five or forty-eight degrees Celsius. It is not easy to put a water jar on your shoulder and go out there.
This woman—I do not know why she sinned or why she descended so far; I do not know—was still ashamed before other people. So she went at that hour to avoid the eyes of those supposedly holy people, who would certainly have stared at her and said, “She has another man now. I saw another one coming and going.” She went then because of her shame, to avoid all the gossip of the world—people who are quick to judge others and never examine themselves. And God preserved that sense of shame in her. There are two kinds of sinners, my beloved: those who sin and boast of their sin, and those who sin but are ashamed. Those who boast will not find mercy, because in their pride they will never ask for mercy. But for all the others, Christ will create circumstances and opportunities that make it easier for them to be saved. Let each of us, then, look at his life as a whole. Is it lawful?
Is it according to Christ? Is it according to the Gospel? Or is it according to the flesh, self-interest, and the world? Christ does not compromise. And blessed is the man who is united with Christ in this world, rather than meeting Him in the next world as his opponent and Judge. Metanoia—repentance—is a great thing. It disarms the justice of God. Yes. This woman—I do not know whether you know her story—had five sisters. And I do not know whether only she had six men, or how many the others had, individually and altogether. Yet this woman’s repentance affected her sisters so deeply that they too returned to God and were all baptized.
They bore Greek names: Photo, Photis, Kyriaki, and Paraskevi—all Greek names. She also had her two children born outside wedlock baptized. And what happened? This woman who had been with six men now presented six saints from her own family.
Within our own family, our changed life is not easily believed. No one becomes a saint in the eyes of those in his own homeland. A person needs immense grace and spiritual radiance to influence those who know him. We are astonished by this Saint whom we are now hearing about. So great was her repentance, so profound her contrition, and so transformed her life that she even influenced her sisters. If you wish, calmly open the Synaxarion for February 26, on which the martyrdom of Saint Photini’s family is commemorated, and you will find: “Today Saint Photo is perfected by the sword.” She was one of the sisters of Saint Photini the Samaritan woman. “Today Saint Photis is perfected by the sword. Saint Paraskevi, bound to two trees”—one foot to one tree and the other foot to the other, and when the trees were released—“was torn down the middle and perfected by being divided in two. Saint Kyriaki is perfected by the sword. Saint Joses, a child born outside wedlock, is perfected by the sword. Saint Photo is perfected by the sword.” There was also a duke, the commander of the detachment, who saw the miracles that took place on the day this family was martyred and came to believe as well. All this came from one woman. Why? Because she admitted, “Yes, You are a prophet. What You have told me is true.” And when Christ sees a person
admit that, being human, he has sinned, He is disarmed and gives him not merely grace, but more than he asks. Let me tell you: the left foot of Saint Photini—the very foot of the woman who had sinned with six men—is preserved whole to this day at the Holy Monastery of Iveron on the Holy Mountain. The skin remains, and it gives forth a sweet fragrance. What does this mean? It reveals the power of repentance. If you were to see in the treasury of the Holy Sepulchre the holy skull of Saint Kyriaki, Saint Photini’s sister, shining and giving forth a sweet fragrance, what would you say? This is the purpose of the example Christ presents through this woman’s life: to reveal His divinity and to reveal His compassion toward man—but toward the man
who admits that, being human, he sins. For the most part, we busy ourselves with finding faults in others: faults in clergy, faults in people who attend church, faults in preachers, faults in chanters, and so on. “Do you know what they do?” Are you asking me? Look at yourself before Jesus and leave the others alone. Do not use circumstances and the faults of others to cover your own. Yes, you are human, and so am I. No one is without sin. Only One is sinless: Christ. All of us will fall, whether a little or a great deal. But here you see a woman who had fallen so far that no one could have imagined she would return with such contrition and such metanoia—such repentance—that God would preserve even her body incorrupt. It is not the bloated, unnatural incorruption of a corpse, but an incorruption that gives forth a sweet fragrance and bears witness to the power of repentance.
Why, then, should we not repent? Why should we not change our lives? Why should we be afraid to face our sins? Why should we persist in our pride, accusing others and not ourselves? This is a great lesson, and when a person comes into contact with Christ, everything changes. That is why others immediately put a label on him: “He is a fanatic. He is a coward. He has gone mad. He is a Jesuit.” Go and speak with Saint Photini, who left her water jar behind—she left the jar. “Why did you come here, my daughter?” “I came to draw water.” “Then why are you not taking the water now? Go on to your destination, back to your home.” She left the water there as well; and more than that, she went out and spoke about Him.
She abandoned the water jar and forgot her errand. She ceased to thirst and ceased to be concerned about or attached to her home. Christ does strange things. When Christ enters a person’s heart, He makes that person seem mad. Other people will immediately call him mad. If you wish, read Mark 3:21 and see what they said about Christ when He first began to work miracles. They ran to His Mother and His so-called brothers and said, “Go and take hold of Him. He is beside Himself; He has gone mad.” They said He was mad because He worked miracles. It is the same today. When a person is going downhill, then suddenly stops and changes his life—when he begins to think differently and live honorably; when he used to steal but now gives to others; when he used to dishonor people but now asks forgiveness; when he used not to attend church but now does; when he refused to have children but now welcomes them; when he did not fast but now begins to fast—that person is considered mad.
“Oh, what happened? Have you gone mad?” The one who is mad calls the other man mad. Unfortunately, my beloved, we are living in the age foretold by Anthony the Great. He said that a time would come when humanity would be demon-possessed or insane, and if anyone escaped this condition and remained sane, the others would tell him that he was mad. That is where we are today. Therefore, today’s encounter with this Saint—called Photini now, though she was then known as the Samaritan woman—must become a turning point for us as well. Each of us should have this brief conversation with Christ: “My Christ, if You are to give me grace and bless my work, my health, and my household as a whole, what do You want from me?” “I want you to set your sins in order. That is what I want. I ask nothing else of you. Your wallet...
“Not your wallet, not your husband, not your children. I gave you all these. It is your sins that I want.” Yet we human beings do not surrender our sins. And if a person does not surrender his sins here, he will come face to face with the justice of God there. Today’s miracle, then, once again proves the divinity of Jesus. And the final confirmation will come next Sunday, when with a little earth and a little spittle He will make an eye—the most delicate organ of the human body—and will show, “It was I who first fashioned you from earth and water.” Next Sunday, once again, He reveals His identity and proves His divinity. Christ was God and man. As God, He worked miracles; as man, He experienced every human need. He ate, slept, journeyed, wept, walked, and was moved with compassion: He was man. He opened tombs,
cast out demons, healed paralytics, and fashioned eyes: He was God. Saint Proclus, the disciple of the divine John Chrysostom, spoke most beautifully about these two natures of Jesus, which are revealed in Holy Scripture for all to see: “I behold the miracles and proclaim the divinity; I see the sufferings and do not deny the humanity.” I pray, then, to our holy God that the intercessions of this woman and of her entire family may shelter us, and that God’s mercy may shelter us as well. But may we also desire to change our lives here, so that we may meet Him there. This is my prayer for one another and for all. Amen.
Once again, your love gives me the opportunity—as it did last year, if I remember correctly, when I was again with you—to say a few words concerning this work of yours.
Let me repeat that this work, this effort, is not something everyone can easily appreciate. One would need to be a specialist, so to speak, especially to appreciate this particular effort of yours: Holy Scripture, and you together with the Theotokos. For I understand that when you gather here—however many times a month or a week, perhaps once; I do not know—
you concern yourselves chiefly with the person of the Theotokos: with the person of the Queen, that is, with the person of the Mother. That is why I say that anyone capable of properly describing this effort of yours would have to be a true specialist, a person of heaven. As for speaking against the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), the one who understands that work best is the devil. The Most Holy Theotokos is a thorn in Satan’s eye and an obstacle to all his works. Satan hates our Most Holy Theotokos even more than Christ, because she gave flesh to God within her womb. Satan was deceived and took Him for an ordinary man, and so raised Him upon the Cross, failing to see the Resurrection beyond the Cross and the crushing of his own head. This is why Satan hates the Most Holy Theotokos. Those who devote themselves to the person of the Most Holy Theotokos have, in a certain sense, secured her help, and...
they will more easily reach the place where one day they will meet her and see her face to face. This is why our Church, which alone possesses the Spirit of God, has armed her children with so many hymns to the Most Holy Theotokos that I dare say they are more numerous than the hymns to our Christ. You will have understood how highly the Church esteems her power and her grace, since in every prayer she immediately hastens to say, “Through the prayers of the Most Holy, immaculate Theotokos.” The Church offers no prayer without bringing the Most Holy Theotokos into it. Perhaps the Supplicatory Canon is chanted here—the Paraklesis, from time to time.
Perhaps you also chant the Akathist Hymn, and perhaps the Great Paraklesis. If people knew what takes place at that hour, and in what condition a person enters and then leaves this place, they would never neglect these services. Wherever they might be, they would always repeat these hymns, which could only have been composed by people filled with the Holy Spirit. Take the Akathist Hymn, for example. I do not know whether you had the opportunity, when I was here during Great Lent and we gave three talks about our Most Holy Theotokos, to see what these things contain. We touched on them only lightly; we did not enter their depths at all. Yet you saw what is contained in those words, in all those cries of “Rejoice” and “Alleluia.” I say, then, that we would know them by heart, if we truly understood
the Akathist Hymn. Many people do know it by heart, including people who cannot read—women and men alike—because her own grace helps them and imprints these words upon their nous, their spiritual intellect. And when these words pass through a person’s nous, Satan flees; he cannot remain. The same is true of the Small Paraklesis and the Great Paraklesis. These two supplicatory canons concern the human body, a person’s health and safety, and human life in general, while the Akathist Hymn concerns the human soul. Since I have found myself with you this evening for these few minutes, I would like to share with you, from the experience of Patristic theology,
a few things about the power of the Most Holy Theotokos—as a person, in hymns, and in her icon. For after God, we have the Most Holy Theotokos. I even dare to say that we Orthodox call upon our Most Holy Theotokos more often than upon Christ. Whatever happens, we cry, “Our Most Holy Theotokos!” Of course, this does not abolish the dogma; this devotion also leads to the person of Christ. For if Christ did not exist, our Most Holy Theotokos would not possess such power, such authority, or such boldness before God. I dare tell you that on the Holy Mountain everything is done in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos: if the Most Holy Theotokos wills it, if she says so, if she grants us another dawn, if she gives her approval. The Most Holy Theotokos is always at the forefront. Christ seems to have hidden Himself there. Of course, they live within the place and spiritual climate
of the Garden of the Most Holy Theotokos, and they see her in every aspect of life from the moment they leave their homes behind.
On another occasion, when I was speaking about intercessions and said many things concerning our Most Holy Theotokos, I mentioned something that I will tell you again, since you very likely have not heard it. Let me relate an incident to show you the power of the grace bestowed through the Paraklesis to our Most Holy Theotokos. It is said that there was once a robber who commanded a large band of men. One day, an elder who was an ascetic felt a desire to go all the way to their hideout. This, of course, was extremely daring.
He reached the hideout. When the guards saw him, they were not afraid of an elder. They asked him, “What do you want here, elder?” He replied, “I want to see your leader.” “Wait here.” They went and told their chief that an elder was asking for him.
“What is he carrying? Does he have anything? Is there a weapon in his hand?” “No,” they answered, “nothing.” “Let him come.” And so the elder went in, greeted him, and they sat down privately. The elder said, “I would like to see your men—to see all of you together—and, as an old man, say a few words to you, perhaps tell you something amusing.” So the leader ordered everyone to gather.
They all assembled, and the elder asked, “Is there anyone else?”
“No,” they replied, “there is no one else.” “Are you certain?” They looked at one another. “No, there is no one else.” “Look carefully, in case someone is missing.” They checked again. “No, everyone is here.” “But I think there is one more,” the elder said. “There is no one else.” “There must be.” The elder insisted that someone was missing. It turned out that there really was. “Well,” the leader said, “there is one more, but he is only the cook. He is nobody important.” “Tell him to come as well,” said the elder. So the man came, but he kept his eyes lowered and would not look at the elder. Then the elder questioned him.
“What are you?” The man did not answer. “I am asking you what you are. Speak, so that the others here and your leader may hear.” Still he gave no answer. “In the name of the crucified Jesus Christ, what are you? Speak, so that these people may hear.”
At last, when he heard the name of Jesus, he was compelled to open his mouth. With his head still bowed, he said, “I am Satan.” When the others heard the word “Satan,” they cried, “Then what are you doing here? Tell us: when did you come, and what work are you doing here?” He replied, “I have been here for fourteen years.” “And what have you been doing here? In the name of Jesus, tell us and bear witness before us.” “My superior sent me here,” he said, “to watch the leader, the chief robber.
I was to wait for a day when he failed to offer the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, and then enter into him.” Although this man had become a robber, he had learned from his mother to offer the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos every day. However many cares occupied him during the day, he would offer it at night. So Satan had remained there for fourteen years, waiting for him to miss the Paraklesis for a single day, so that he could enter him. Do you understand? The robber, for his part, treated these as two separate things: one thing was one thing, and the other was another. He continued offering the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, even while remaining a robber. Yet because he said the Paraklesis every day, despite his sins,
his wickedness, his robberies, and his murders, grace still watched over him and would not abandon him. For if Satan had entered him, he would have swallowed him up completely, and the man would have been lost. This event caused him to abandon everything, return to God, and embrace metanoia, repentance. The gang was dissolved, and all those men were saved. Such is her tremendous power. We do not understand it; we do not see it. Yet she is moved by the words we address to her, even when we say them without understanding, simply and imperfectly. She takes into account the effort we make, the home and work we leave behind, and the remarks we may hear from a husband, a sister, or our children. She takes all these things into account, shelters the person, and blesses him.
What I am telling you is significant: whoever devotes himself to the person of the Most Holy Theotokos will be sanctified here, and there he will also find her a mighty helper on the day of Judgment. Alongside the story I have just told you, it is also related that a man once died who recited the Akathist Hymn every day. As you know, the Akathist Hymn is joined to Compline in the evening. Those of you who say Compline will either recite the entire Akathist Hymn or one quarter of it, what we call one section. Throughout his life, then, right up to his death, this man always recited to the Most Holy Theotokos, “Rejoice, O Full of Grace”—that is, the Akathist Hymn.
Within three days, a lily sprang up from his grave, so fresh and beautiful that people wondered who had planted it there. All the flowers they had laid upon his tomb had withered, but this lily kept growing. Their curiosity was aroused, and although the man had been buried only a few days, they went and opened the grave to see what was happening. They found that the lily was growing from within his heart. It had taken root there and was springing forth from his heart. Another similar account is this: when the remains of another man, who had always recited the Akathist Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos, were exhumed, his heart was found to be like that of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer,
and upon it were written the words, “Rejoice, O Full of Grace.” His whole heart bore the inscription, “Rejoice, O Full of Grace.” I tell you these things because they come from the holy tradition of our Church. Many of us miss out—we lose so much. I might even say that we often sin, because with our tongues and our judgments we attack people who are striving to place the Most Holy Theotokos in their midst like a mother hen, while they take the place of her chicks. You understand how safe and peaceful a little bird feels beneath its mother’s wings and under her care.
Thank you.
Do we Orthodox really understand who the Most Holy Theotokos is? We often wear a medallion bearing her image, and we often give such an image as a gift. Yet we do not understand its true value: it is not merely a picture. Behind the image stands a person who acts on our behalf. And so, even with the medallion around our neck, our guardian angel may find us committing sin, while we pay no heed to what we are wearing. Mothers above all—and parents in general—ought to introduce the Most Holy Theotokos into the home from the very day their children come into this world. Along with grandmother and grandfather, mother and father, children should first learn about the Most Holy Theotokos.
Only afterward should they learn about everyone else, because all those other people—their entire family, the whole village, the whole city—cannot stand beside them in danger as the Most Holy Theotokos can. Yet children often know nothing of her power beyond seeing an icon. In one village, which was divided into two neighborhoods with a river running between them, a family had taught its children from an early age to be close to the Most Holy Theotokos. How did they do this? They had a most beautiful icon of her in their home. The children did not yet understand what this icon was, but from their earliest years they were taught that whenever they went out through the door or returned home, at any hour of the day,
they should bow before her. In time, of course, they would come to understand who this person was whom they had invoked and reverenced since childhood. One day, the two oldest children left home to go to school, which was in another lane on the far side of the village.
The village children were swept into the river and drowned, except for these two children from that household. One mother heard that her own children had drowned while these two had been saved. They too had been carried away by the water, but farther downstream they had managed to reach the bank and cling to some trees until the villagers came running and pulled them out. The grieving mother cried out to one of them, “Tell me, how did my child drown, though he was older than you, while you escaped? How did you get away?” The child replied, “Auntie, we did not hold on by ourselves. A woman dressed in black came—the woman whose picture we have at home, and whom our father and mother taught us to bow to like this whenever we leave or enter the house.
She came, took hold of us, and brought us here. Then she told us, ‘Hold on tightly. They will come now to lift you out; they will come and take you home.’” Sadly, this person is often treated as nothing more than a decoration in the home, and no more than that. I remember another account from something I have read, and I pass it on to you. It concerns the life of a very old monk, an elder who for fifty-five years had been attacked in the flesh by the devil. I tell it to show you the power of the Most Holy Theotokos, the hatred Satan bears toward her, and how she stands in the way of Satan’s works.
One day Satan appeared at the door in all his dreadful display, with his horns, his tongue, and his tail. The elder was inside. As soon as he saw him, the elder said, “Come here; I want to speak to you. We have both grown old. You have been fighting me for fifty-five years. Will you not leave me alone now?” Satan replied, “If you promise to do one thing for me, I will leave you.” The poor elder, worn down at that moment, answered, “I will do it.” Satan said, “Then you must throw away that piece of wood over there. Look—it is the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. Burn that board.” When the elder heard this, he could hardly believe it.
He should have said, “Tell me what it is first, and then I will tell you whether I shall do it.” Instead, he had already said, “I will do it.” But when he heard that he must remove and burn that board—as the heretics, Protestants, and various Jehovah’s Witnesses tell us that icons are nothing but boards—he was terrified. He had the presence of mind to answer, “I will give you my reply in two days.” Then he arose, went deep into the desert, and found a very discerning elder. He confessed his predicament: in his anguish, after Satan had tormented him for fifty-five years, he had made that promise without considering that it might be a trap. “What am I to do?” he asked. The discerning elder answered, “Choose
the Most Holy Theotokos,” he told him, “even if it means going to Hell with her, rather than going to Paradise without her.” In other words, even if you should fall into sin, never deny the Most Holy Theotokos. “Choose to go to Hell with the Most Holy Theotokos rather than to Paradise without her—as though Satan would ever let you reach Paradise without first leading you into sin!” The monk returned and told Satan, “I do not accept what you demanded. I will not remove this icon.” The Most Holy Theotokos is a person, do you understand? She is not wood, nor a mosaic, nor a lithograph, nor paper. It is indeed her image, but the Most Holy Theotokos herself is a person. Behind that image, and beyond the words you address to her, you are speaking to a person—a person of great power, a person who has boldness before God, a person who
desires to help and to guide us by the hand. I also remember, for her sake and out of love for you, a beautiful gesture by a wise mother whose daughter attended a boarding school. The girl wrote to her: “Mother, along with the other things you send me, please send me a mirror as well”—so that she could arrange her hair and look at her face, as we say. Her mother sent her a mirror wrapped up. The girl unfolded it, expecting to see a mirror, but instead she saw an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. Her mother had written, “My child, use this as your mirror when preparing yourself.” What wisdom that mother showed! She meant: keep her as your mirror and see yourself reflected in her—as a virgin, as a young woman, and tomorrow as a wife and mother. Pattern yourself upon the person of the Most Holy Theotokos. Everyone who wishes to make something good of life also hopes to help others. What mother or father does not long for their child to be someone who gives off a sweet fragrance? They do not want people to say, “A curse upon the mother who bore that child,” but rather, “Blessed is the mother who bore that child,” as they said of the Most Holy Theotokos. And when the woman heard Christ speaking, do you remember what she said? It is from the Gospel reading of the Paraklesis:
“Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed.” Blessed is the mother who gave birth to You and the breasts from which You drank milk. Sadly, people often say of many of our own children, “A curse upon the mother who bore you,” because they go out and cause so much harm—harm that perhaps you know better than I do. But if we succeed in forming a relationship with the Most Holy Theotokos, both within ourselves and in others, things will change. Other people will see us differently. We ourselves will not see that we have changed, because she conceals it from us, lest we grow proud and lose grace. But others will see us differently. They saw us one way yesterday, when we were far from the Most Holy Theotokos, and they will see us another way now.
We are devoting ourselves to the Most Holy Theotokos. Do you know what is said? One day she was passing through a beautiful garden filled with lovely flowers. One flower attracted her attention, and she went close to pick it. She plucked it and brought it to her nose to enjoy its fragrance, but it had no scent at all. It smelled of nothing. It was cold and lifeless, of no use. Outwardly it was splendid, but inwardly it had no fragrance whatsoever. Do you know how many people are like that today? Do you know how many of our children appear beautiful outwardly—how many of our girls, and how many of us ourselves?
We should ask whether we have any fragrance at all. And not only may we lack fragrance; we may even give off a terrible stench. It is said that the Most Holy Theotokos was deeply saddened that such a beautiful flower had no fragrance. She caressed it and said, “Poor flower, why do you have no scent?” As soon as her hands touched it, the flower began to release such a fragrance that people passing far away would ask, “What is that? What smells so beautiful?” And they would go to that flower—the flower the Most Holy Theotokos had caressed. This is what happens to a human being: he changes and becomes different. Therefore, we too must strive to have a relationship with the Most Holy Theotokos, so that we may possess at least a little of that fragrance—and so may our children and our young women.
Without the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, it makes no difference what a person achieves. Let someone learn five hundred languages, reach the stars, or do whatever else he wishes. Let him attain the greatest achievements in the world. Without grace, he is something foul in the sight of God; he is nothing. But if the Most Holy Theotokos overshadows him, if he knows her and possesses the grace of purity, goodness, integrity, and, in time, motherhood, then everything changes. People will take off their hats in respect, as they do before many young women and men, many ladies and gentlemen. Such people may hold no high position, yet others esteem them. A person who has a relationship with God, with the Most Holy Theotokos, with the Church, and with the Mysteries gives off a spiritual fragrance. You sense it. It affects you; it truly affects you.
You may have noticed this at times. If you visit a home where the people are not very devout and where the children and young women do not live very well, when you enter it is as though the police have arrived. They say, “Aunt Katina is here today—be careful! Uncle George has come,” or whoever it may be. It is as though a police officer or prosecutor had entered. Is it because I am such a fine person? No. It is the grace upon you that stops them in their tracks and reproves them. They can see that there is something more within you. This is what I have been telling you: it is given by the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos. So if you want yourselves and your families to radiate this grace in some measure, strive as much as you can, little by little—just a tiny thing each day. That tiny thing will become something greater. One day it will become great and bear good fruit, not only for us but also for others. For do you know how
Christianity spread? It spread through people’s lives. When those of other religions saw an Orthodox woman, they would exclaim, “How marvelous!” They would ask, “What is this? What kind of faith do these women possess?” In other words, the woman’s faith spoke through her life, and in this way the faith spread. Many people wanted to be initiated into this religion, into this new teaching that was appearing, because it formed people of such character. I shall take just a few more minutes of your time, because many of us have icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, though we do not care for them as we should. I want to tell you that when you look upon an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, you should behold the Most Holy Theotokos herself. I cannot tell you how many names and titles she has.
By her grace, I was granted the opportunity to study this subject. I recorded six hundred names of the Most Holy Theotokos in a book called Christian Anthology, Volume Two—and I myself collected six hundred! Imagine how many there must be. Each title—the Phaneromene, the Plataniotissa, the Iveron Theotokos, the Portaitissa, the Gorgoepikoos, and so many others—has its corresponding icon. These titles are not without foundation; each has its own icon, and you understand what this means: her protection extends in every direction. Something comes to mind now, and I shall tell you. During the years of enslavement under the Turks, a Turk was once pursuing a Greek, a giaour, and was almost within arm’s reach of him. Where could the Greek hide?
The Christian ran into a church and hid behind an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. His feet were visible, his stomach was visible, and even his backside was showing. The Turk came in and worked out where the man’s head must be. He took aim and fired, but that was precisely where the halo of the Most Holy Theotokos was. He fired at that very spot, intending to strike the Greek, the Christian. But the bullet ricocheted, killing the Turk himself, while the Christian was protected. This icon bears the name “Donius,” which, if you know Turkish, means “return”—a turning back. The icon is in Edessa—in Skydra, in fact. Yes, that is where it is. I am simply telling you this because I wanted you to hear it.
I want to help you appreciate and take care of the rooms where you keep an icon of our Most Holy Theotokos. Let me tell you about two incidents. Once, a man went to Constantinople to buy meat from a Turkish butcher. The butcher had two chopping blocks: a large tree stump on which he cut the meat, and another, smaller square block of wood for cutting the smaller pieces. While the butcher was weighing the meat he had bought, the Christian noticed that square block of wood. He suddenly felt inspired, without any ulterior motive, to ask the Turk whether he would sell it to him. When he asked, the butcher said, “What do you want it for?” “I need it for something.” I do not know how much the Turk asked for it, but the man paid him and took the bloodstained block of wood home along with the meat. When he arrived home, he washed it.
When he washed it, what did he find underneath? A most beautiful Byzantine icon of our Most Holy Theotokos. In other words, she had prompted him inwardly to ask for that piece of wood. He took care of the icon, cleaned it, and then placed it in his sitting room, as they called it, where he proudly admired it. One day, some friends came to visit him. He took them into that room, though of course they did not say anything about the icon. At one point, he went to help his wife bring them a glass of wine, as we would say. “Have a cigarette,” he said, “and I’ll be right back.” So he went and brought out the appetizers, the wine, and everything else, and they sat down. Then one of the visitors happened to notice the icon. He said, “Where did you find it? Did you have an icon like this before? Did it belong to your parents? Whose icon was it?” “Ah,” he replied, “let me tell you the story.”
So he sits down and tells them the whole story: “It was on the Turkish butcher’s chopping block, and so on; I took it and brought it here...” “My goodness!” And as they were talking about all this and marveling, the Most Holy Theotokos spoke and said: “If you brought me here only to incense me with the devil’s incense...”
“the Turk’s butcher shop.” I say this about modern homes, which trample everything underfoot for the sake of that incense of the devil—the cigarette. Another incident, which also took place in Constantinople, was as follows. A certain Jew had...
He had rented his house to an Orthodox Christian. When the Orthodox Christian moved out, the Jewish owner moved back in. One evening, he was having dinner with a large group of friends. They were talking and enjoying themselves when suddenly a deathly silence fell over the room. What had happened? There, in a corner, was a small icon of our Most Holy Theotokos.
When they saw it, they said to him, “So that is what you are? What is going on? What is this?” They did not reveal themselves. “What is that?” they asked. “Is that what you are?” They got up to leave. But he said, “Wait, let me explain. One of them left it here—one of our own people, I mean.” Then he took it down. “I will show you that I am not one of them,” he said. He climbed onto the table, set a chair on it so that he could reach the little icon, brought it down, and...
He placed it on the table and took a sharp knife to split the icon in two, to show the others that he had nothing to do with that religion and was not a Christian. But the moment he struck the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos with the knife, blood spurted from it and anointed them all. We do not understand. We think we have before us merely a piece of wood, that she can remain off in a corner while we do whatever we please in this place. Do you understand? So this place in which you live and serve is a very great and sacred thing. You must not only remain here and preserve it, because you are keeping the heavens open and giving the Most Holy Theotokos the opportunity to bless you and, through you, others as well; this is also true more generally, especially in these days. Whatever may happen to you, offer it as a sacrifice for the sake of the Most Holy Theotokos, and she will shelter you in her own way.
There was a young man—and with this I will conclude—who once heard people speaking of the majesty of the Most Holy Theotokos, saying that she is “higher than the Cherubim and the Seraphim.” He longed, if it were possible, to see her just once, even if it meant losing his sight. He was willing to give one of his eyes to behold our Most Holy Theotokos. So he prayed: “My Most Holy Theotokos, let me see something of your majesty and glory, even if I lose my sight.” And indeed, there was a flash of light before him, and our Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him—but the young man lost the sight of one eye. Yet he was so filled with joy within that he said, “I will give you my other eye as well, Most Holy Theotokos, if only I may see you once more.” Our Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him again, but she restored the sight of his first eye and did not take the sight of the second. This is our Most Holy Theotokos, who is here, and whom you are caring for, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
and venerate her. I pray to the Holy God that this little nest may grow large, and it depends on us to help others enter it as well. This is a blessing shared by all, because whoever helps a person draw near to the faith, to the Church, and to all that belongs to her “will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins,” as James, the Brother of the Lord, tells us. I pray, then, that our Most Holy Theotokos, through her grace, may shelter you as individuals, as families, as a Church, and as a movement. I may never see you again in this life; but if the Most Holy Theotokos remains the bond between us, we shall meet one day up above, in the place she has prepared from the foundation of the world. God be with you.

το οποίο υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα. Αγαπητοί μου, ο άνθρωπος σε γενικές γραμμές δεν τον θέλει τον Θεό. Ούτε το Ευαγγέλιό του ούτε την Εκκλησία του, διότι του ελέγχει τον παράνομο βίο. Γι' αυτό ακριβώς δεν τον θέλει. Και πάντοτε ο Χριστός είναι εκείνος ο οποίος προηγείται στη σωτηρία του ανθρώπου. Σήμερα αυτός έφτιαξε το ραντεβού αυτό, γνωρίζοντας, ως Θεός, ότι το μεσημέρι εκείνο θα πήγαινε αυτή η γυναίκα, η αμαρτωλός, στο πηγάδι. Επήγε μπροστά αυτός και την περίμενε εκεί. Και αυτός είναι που της άνοιξε λόγο, ζητώντας της νερό, και έγινε όλη η άλλη συζήτηση. Και απεκαλύφθη η ζωή της και απεκάλυψε την ταυτότητά του. Εξετάστε τον εαυτό σας. Πώς βρίσκεστε στην εκκλησία εδώ;
Αυτή, η οποία δεν ξέρω για ποιο λόγο ημάρτησε, για ποιο λόγο έφτασε σε αυτόν τον κατήφορο, δεν ξέρω, εντρέπετο ακόμη τον κόσμο. Για να αποφεύγει, λοιπόν, τα μάτια των άλλων δήθεν αγίων, που ασφαλώς θα την κοιτούσαν και θα λέγανε: «Άλλον έχει τώρα. Άλλον είδα να βγαίνει και να μπαίνει», για να αποφύγει αυτά τα σου και τα μου του κόσμου, που ξέρουν εύκολα να κρίνουν τον άλλον και ουδέποτε να εξετάζουν τον εαυτό τους, για την ντροπή αυτή η γυναίκα αυτή επήγαινε. Και αυτό το κρατούσε ο Θεός. Είναι δύο ειδών αμαρτωλοί άνθρωποι, αγαπητοί μου: αυτοί που αμαρτάνουν και καυχώνται που αμαρτάνουν και αυτοί που αμαρτάνουν αλλά ντρέπονται. Αυτοί που καυχώνται δεν θα βρουν έλεος, διότι δεν θα ζητήσουν με τον εγωισμό τους ποτέ έλεος. Όμως σε όλους τους άλλους ο Χριστός θα δημιουργήσει καταστάσεις και περιπτώσεις να τους διευκολύνει για να σωθούν. Ας κοιτάζει, λοιπόν, ο καθένας τη ζωή του γενικά. Είναι νόμιμη;
Επέτρεψε η χάρη της να καταπιαστώ με αυτό το θέμα. Έχω 600 ονόματα της Παναγίας γράψει σε ένα βιβλίο που λέγεται «Χριστιανική Ανθολογία, ο δεύτερος τόμος» και έχω 600 εγώ. Φανταστείτε πόσα είναι και, κατά συνέπεια, κάθε τέτοια, μα Φανερωμένη, μα Πλατανιώτισσα, μα των Ιβήρων, μα Πορταΐτισσα, μα Γοργοεπήκοος, μα, μα, μα, μα, έχει και τις ανάλογες εικόνες. Δεν είναι στον αέρα. Έχει και τις ανάλογες εικόνες και καταλαβαίνετε τι είναι. Είναι προστασία προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις. Έρχεται στο νου μου τώρα και θα σας το πω. Όταν είμαστε στη σκλαβιά από τους Τούρκους, ένας Τούρκος κυνηγούσε έναν Έλληνα, ένα γκιαούρη. Στο μισό του το χέρι αυτός, πού να πάει να κρυφτεί ο Έλληνας;
