Summary
The Holy Spirit, equal with the Father and the Son, works salvation in the Church while respecting each person’s free will. Every baptized Christian is called to preserve or recover baptismal purity through struggle, repentance, confession, and Holy Communion. God supplies the grace and strength for salvation when a person offers sincere willingness, begins the struggle, and returns through repentance like the Prodigal Son.

In our last two talks, we spoke about the Ascension and Pentecost—specifically, about the descent of the Holy Spirit, the role the Holy Spirit plays, and how a person can be raised up by the Holy Spirit.
In the Church, the Holy Spirit brings about the salvation of human beings—and specifically, of those who desire it, those who desire it. I want to insist on this point and explain it as clearly as I can: when a person is unwilling, God cannot act. Of course, to say that God is powerless is only a figure of speech. God can make heaven and earth anew, but He does not create a person’s will. He cannot do that. The person must supply the willingness. And those who have not yet succeeded in living according to Christ have failed because they did not want to—not because they could not, but because they did not want to. If they had wanted to...
God could have helped them cut away many faults and make great progress toward salvation. We are now in what we called a bright and joyful week. Every day is joyful, and the usual fasting rules concerning food are relaxed. This Bright Week also extended from Pentecost until All Saints, because the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, is equal in honor to our Lord Jesus Christ: Christ is celebrated at Pascha, and the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
Just as we had Bright Week after Pascha, so after the descent of the Holy Spirit we also have a bright and festal week. That is why fasting was relaxed on the Wednesday and Friday of this week.
The fasting rules were relaxed. Now, this coming Sunday, we come to the Sunday known as All Saints. Then we have a preparatory fast in honor of the Apostles Peter and Paul, whose feast is at the end of the month. Afterward, we return to the usual course, until we again encounter the events observed from the first through the fifteenth of August.
I do not know whether you have ever given thought to this feast of All Saints—what it is, and when it began. It was established in the days of Leo the Wise, around the ninth century, and its origin is connected with an empress named Theophano, the wife of Leo the Wise. Our Church does indeed celebrate her on December 16. If you have a Synaxarion, I urge you to read the life of this empress. In any case, when the empress fell asleep in the Lord...
Leo, although he had separated from her, hastened to build a church in Constantinople in her name, because he regarded her as a Saint. But, as you know, the Church allows time for a person’s sainthood to be confirmed: the person may work miracles, appear to someone, stream myrrh, or be found incorrupt—as we say, undecayed and whole in body. There are many signs that bear witness to holiness. When the Patriarch of that time learned that the emperor was building a church in honor of his wife, Theophano, he hastened...
to summon him and make him reconsider what he had undertaken. He told him: “Emperor, if the empress is a Saint, the Church will not do her an injustice. But today, so soon after her death, the Church cannot proclaim her a Saint. It must have evidence in hand so that it may be certain. If she is a Saint, the Church will proclaim her a Saint one day. It will not wrong her. Do not be hasty. This is ill-considered. It is not right, and the Church does not approve it.” The emperor accepted this.
He remained convinced that his wife was a Saint and that he himself had not treated her rightly, but he abandoned the idea of naming the newly built church in honor of Saint Theophano the Empress. Being a wise man, he reasoned and said: “Then let it be named in honor of All Saints,” with this thought: “And if Theophano is a Saint, let her be numbered among the Saints.” In this way, if she too was a Saint, she would be included among them. This, then, was the reason: the emperor had wanted to have his wife declared a Saint sooner than was proper. And from that time onward there has been...
the Sunday that celebrates all the others—the Saints whom, as we said, we do not know by name. The holy people known to us are not the only Saints: Saint Nicholas, for example, Saint Spyridon, Saint Demetrios, Saint Paraskevi, Saint Barbara, and all the other names we know and celebrate. According to Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite, the martyrs and Saints who have been counted and recorded number about twelve million. But how many remain anonymous? How many have never been revealed? How many Saints still lie in their graves incorrupt and unchanged? If you go only as far as Mount Sinai and see the holy relics kept there, you will say, “What is happening here?”
Who are these people? They are anonymous; they remain unknown by name. So the feast of All Saints arose because of this circumstance. And, as you know, we sometimes make use of it apart from this Sunday as well. If someone has no particular Saint whose feast bears his name, he celebrates on All Saints, because surely there will be someone among them who bears his name.
Many times there may not be. Yet we still want to celebrate. You see, the godfather, godmother, or parents did not take care to choose a name belonging to a Saint. Someone may ask, “Are we not permitted to choose such a name?” You see where that leaves us: without a feast day to celebrate, and saddened because of it.
Then let us strive to become Saints ourselves, so that the name itself may become the name of a Saint. Once, for example, someone was named Bacchus. Bacchus, as you know, was the pagan god of wine. Yet this man attained holiness, and today we have Saint Bacchus; so now everyone named Bacchus can have a patron Saint. Do you understand? And there is Saint Kopris. Kopris is an unpleasant name, is it not? It comes from the word for manure. Yet he attained holiness, and now we have Saint Kopris. We are free to give such names, but since we do not usually attain holiness today—since we are not disposed to become holy and have not even considered it—we take care to choose a name connected with an existing Saint, so that, if we want to celebrate, we have a feast day to attach it to. The feast of All Saints, then, serves as something that completes what is missing.
It makes visible within the Church what is unseen. Besides the Saints and feast days known to us, the Church gathers in all the others as well, celebrating and remembering them together. The Church does not want to leave anyone out. You have seen how, when we sing the Doxology—“Glory to You who have shown us the light,” and the rest—or when we chant troparia concerning heaven, we light the great chandelier. Why do we light it? It represents the Church triumphant, the heavenly world, whom we also invite to celebrate and glorify God with us, so that those above and those below may glorify Him together. All these things are connected; they teach us and remind us. But we have been indifferent, and in many cases we do not know what...
each thing within the Church contains and signifies. We are ignorant. We are eager to learn many other things, but we have shown no interest in learning these, and so they seem strange to us. I once spoke abroad about the Most Holy Theotokos, because people there hear nothing about her. She is blasphemed from morning until night by all the heretics, and she is directly blasphemed by us Orthodox as well. The others blaspheme her by rejecting her as though she did not exist; we do so in the ways familiar to us. When I spoke about the Most Holy Theotokos and explained the types and symbols surrounding her person, the people were amazed. They had never imagined that so many things within the Church remind us of the Most Holy Theotokos. In particular, I explained the censer to them: its lower part, which holds the charcoal and from which the incense rises, represents the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos...
the charcoal is Christ, the incense is the Holy Spirit, the three chains signify that the Godhead is three in Persons, and the twelve bells are the twelve Apostles. People could hardly believe their eyes. No one has ever edified you by teaching you this. That is what I am saying: learn something from here as well.
Thank you. When the tabernacle rests upon the Holy Table, it represents the Most Holy Theotokos bearing Christ within her. It is the jar of manna, containing the heavenly manna. You do not know this. When you bring the offering, that offering represents the Most Holy Theotokos going forth to give birth to Christ. We do not know these things because we have never taken an interest in learning how they are understood and how they can help us. Yet the Church, for her part, has ordered everything rightly. There is an older book entitled “In the Churches, Bless God.” It explains all these things—what each one symbolizes and what each one is meant to teach. Within the spiritual world of the Saints, then, are all those collectively called All Saints. We too are called to be Saints; it is a commandment: “Become holy.” “The Holy Gifts are for the holy.” For whom? For Saint Nicholas? For Saint Spyridon? No—for us. The Church calls us holy. Every baptized person is a Saint in seed. The holiness of the believer begins at Baptism. He becomes receptive to sanctification. A person begins at one point and may reach even as far as martyrdom, according to how earnestly he struggles.
He receives the grace of the Holy Spirit and is sanctified. In general, the purpose of every human being is to become a Saint. If a person does not become a Saint, he has failed. Everyone is commanded to become a Saint and is destined to become a Saint. “Become holy, become holy.” Holy means pure; holy means undefiled. That is what holiness means: purity. The Saint is the one who has succeeded in preserving the purity of Baptism; and if, for one reason or another, he has stained it, he has made use of the other Mystery—metanoia, repentance, together with confession—and has been cleansed again. But we pay no attention. Every day the Church says the following on behalf of each person: “Let us ask of the Lord that this day may be...”
perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless.” We ask God to give us strength so that, each day when we open our eyes, we may live and labor in such a way that the day will be holy, perfect, peaceful, and sinless. And the chanter cries aloud, “Grant this, O Lord.” Yes, grant us such a day—and not just one such day, but every day. Who ever stops to consider what he is saying to God? At every service, the priest, bishop, or deacon proclaims this petition from what is called the Litany of Peace...
He calls it out. He must not speak falsely; he must speak the truth. Do not say it if none of us intends to do it. Why do we mock God? Who among us ever thinks, “Today I will make this day holy, as God desires and as is good for my soul”? If a person does think this, then let him take it seriously and say, “I will do it.” But no—we simply let the chanter go on saying it. There is another petition of peace—I do not know whether you have noticed it—which says, “An angel of peace, a faithful guide and guardian.” And the chanter responds, “Grant this, O Lord.” Yes, give us such an angel, a faithful guide and guardian. But which of us accepts...
a guide? We would cast the angel out. “Are you going to guide us—where we go today, what we do at work, what we put on our table, what we do in our bed, and what we do when we go out? Out, angel!” A person does not accept an angel as the guide and guardian of his soul. He wants to do as he pleases. How, then, can he become holy and be numbered among the company of the Saints? And you see how often we speak with false humility: “I am going to Hell.” Why should you go to Hell? “I have not even made a beginning yet.” Why do you not begin? Does it cost money? Do you need a university education? Nothing of the sort. What do you need? You need the will. That is what I said at the beginning.
He does not want to. We have not wanted to either. It is not that we cannot; we do not want to. Suppose cancer struck us. How would we respond to it? If we were given a strict regimen, would we follow it or not? Yet here we are not dealing with cancer of the body, which is destined for the worms. Here we are dealing with the soul and immortality. So the day, the Church says, should be holy, perfect, peaceful, and sinless. Try to live even one such day in your life. We have not lived even one in fifty, eighty, or a hundred years, because we never firmly resolved to pass a single day without sin. Therefore the Church, knowing that we cannot accomplish any of this, finally entreats God and says to Him...
“The end of our life...” Let us pray that a Saint will grab us by the hair and strike us down onto a sickbed, where we may remain for one, two, three, five, or ten years—wasting away there, perhaps finally coming to our senses, perhaps repenting, perhaps realizing that there is Someone above us. For as long as a person stands upright, he always looks downward: toward his flesh, his belly, his passions, and the earth. When he is laid low, he looks upward and sees that there is another ceiling, another floor above, another storey—and wonders whether Someone dwells there. Holy is that sickbed, holy is pain, holy is illness, holy are calamities, holy are earthquakes; all these things can be holy. How many purposes they serve in helping a person come to himself so that he may become holy.
Those who struggled will stand as witnesses against us tomorrow, because they too were born of a mother and a father; they too were born through physical pleasure, from flesh and blood. They lived in this same world, where the sun rose in the east and set in the west. They lived amid the same passions and the same malice of men. Even if people do not gain ground, they should at least not lose it, because a person is climbing a staircase.
It takes thirty steps to reach Paradise. If he has reached the nineteenth or the eighteenth, let him not turn back; let him remain there. If he cannot reach the twentieth, let him stand at the nineteenth or the eighteenth. He has made more progress and has a better chance of succeeding there than if he retreats, tumbles down the slope, and reaches the bottom again. It is difficult to climb again, difficult to rise again, because many of us are shattered when we fall. Legs break, hips break, many things break, and even crutches cannot help us. So it is in the spiritual life when a person begins tumbling downward. This Sunday, then, should make every one of us ask whether we shall be numbered among the Saints. When we die, our loved ones standing over us will say to God...
“Number this member also among the Saints.” They will want us to be with the Saints. But will we truly be with the Saints? Will we be worthy to be numbered among them? There too, we speak falsely to God. For a person to be with the Saints and to be placed by Christ among the Saints requires something of him. Earlier, a woman was telling me about the funeral of her brother. She cried, “Among the angels, my brother! Among the angels, my beloved!” It is good to be among the angels. But that depends on what happens here: how a person has lived and how he has set himself in order through the Mysteries of metanoia, or repentance, Holy Confession, and Holy Communion, so that he may go among the angels, among the righteous, and among the Saints.
The preparation is here. It does not take place there. There, only small finishing touches can be made through memorial services, supplicatory prayers, almsgiving, and prayers. But in general, where a person will go is determined here. He creates his own Paradise, or he creates his own Hell. God has given every person a double-sided key. One side opens the Paradise of metanoia, or repentance, while the other opens the Hell of unrepentance. People remain unrepentant and hard-hearted, and Satan laughs. He steals today from them and promises them tomorrow. Whatever they could do today, he promises they will do tomorrow. And when tomorrow becomes today, he promises them the day after.
When that day in turn becomes today, he promises them the next. In this way, a person remains far from metanoia, or repentance, and Holy Confession for many years and grows old. Then, even if he is raised upon a cross, he does not repent, just as the thief on the left did not repent. What was that thief waiting for? Did he expect to be taken down? No, he did not. Yet he did not say, “Remember me,” as the thief on the right did.
This is what we too must do: make a small struggle. When a person begins to struggle, God is with him and helps him. God is not with those who refuse to struggle. I would like to share with you the mind of the Church on how a person becomes holy. Some people say, “You go and become holy, and leave me alone.” But go where? Where are you going? What is your purpose? Is it to eat Theodopoulos’s eggplant and okra and lick ice-cream cones? Is that why you came here? Poor, wretched people! I am going to become holy, and you mock me? Then where are you going?
Come to your senses, and the sooner the better, if you have no intention of working for your salvation as well. Yet we often say so many foolish things. How necessary it is for us too to make our small struggle. When God sees that a person wants to struggle, He will not stand with His hands lowered. God, so to speak, contributes 999 shares for the one share contributed by man. A person contributes only a bare “I want to,” together with his sins—nothing else. That is his sole contribution, the only share he has in his salvation. God provides everything else. As I said, man contributes only his willing desire together with his sins. God provides the rest. He showed this, after all, in the return of the Prodigal Son.
God did the 999 parts. “While he was still far away, his father saw him, ran, fell upon his neck,” embraced him, and kissed him tenderly. This is what happens to every soul that chooses metanoia, or repentance, and leaves behind the revelry of this world. A person cannot do these things because he has no strength. Since he lacks the strength, he cannot do them. But God can give him that strength. Next, I will tell you what the Church has appointed for such people during these days, as an example for us.
The Evangelist Matthew, in the tenth chapter, from verse 32 onward, says: “Whoever confesses Me before men, I also will confess before My Father who is in Heaven.” Whoever confesses Me before men, He says, I too will confess before My Father who is in Heaven. This is one way. If a person wants Christ as his advocate on that day and desires mercy in the judgment, he must confess Him here in this world.
But is it enough for me simply to confess and say that Christ is God, that the Theotokos is Ever-Virgin, or that there is life beyond the grave, and so forth? There are other ways in which a person is called to confess the faith. It is easy to say these things in words. But when the time comes to prove in practice that he believes rightly, and to prove it through his deeds—that is where the true test lies. Christ said, “He who does and teaches shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” He who does and teaches. We readily teach, but we find it difficult to do. And it is in our deeds that we are caught out.
Do we have corresponding deeds that can withstand scrutiny? We do not. Our deeds are not right, they are not Orthodox, and they are not the fruit of faith. For a person who believes in Christ, and believes that an appropriate spiritual life is needed in order to enter the Kingdom, will struggle. First, he must struggle against himself. His flesh, for example, is an enemy, and we must not indulge the flesh. Yet we do indulge it. We yield to its appetites and desires. What does it matter, then, if Christ is God while I am a fornicator or an adulterer?
I am a thief and a blasphemer. What does it matter if Christ is God? Satan says that too. Satan also acknowledges that Christ is God. What, after all, does James say? “Even the demons believe—and tremble.” Even the demons believe and tremble. Did Satan not say to Christ, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” Did he not recognize Him? But did he come to his senses? No. Did he change his life? No, and he never will. What good is it that he confessed Him or acknowledged Him? Satan confesses and believes more accurately than man does, because man, having flesh, has certain weaknesses, bodily impulses, and so forth, whereas Satan is a spirit.
He believes unwaveringly, but he does not act—he does not act. “Whoever does not confess Me before men, neither will I confess him before the angels of God,” as we say, “on that day, nor before My Father.” We go to someone’s home on a Wednesday and find rich, non-fasting food, the sort served at Pascha, and we eat it.
Or a guest comes to us on a Wednesday. I am giving you a simple example. In order to show him hospitality, we cast Christ out that day: “Now we must take care of the guest who has come.” But we could explain ourselves. Perhaps we should confess Christ by saying that we are Christians, that today is Wednesday or Friday, or that it is a fasting season—the Forty-Day Fast or the two-week fast.
It may be the two-week fast, Great Lent, Holy Week, or some other fast. You may say that you are afraid of what people will think, or that you happened to be there for a celebration. But do serious Christians hold celebrations during fasting days? They do not. How, then, did you happen to be there? You disregarded your Lord and gave greater consideration to another person. Confession is demanding. If you do not go, or if you attend only the prayer and do not remain for the meal afterward, or if you refuse the non-fasting sweet they offer you, people will take offense. Yet you prefer to offend Christ rather than offend another person. Man is very foolish. You must confess the faith. I once told you...
In Great Britain, a banquet was given for a couple who had married abroad. It was a Saturday evening during Great Lent. One couple—an army officer and his wife—did not eat the non-fasting food. They had asked the staff to serve them a simple soup made with water and oil, and a great quarrel broke out. The general even stood up and made the sign of the Cross. Everyone cried out together, “Are we not Christians too, General?” He replied, “If you were, you would make the sign of the Cross. Since you did not, you are not Christians.” The banquet came to an end and everyone dispersed that evening, all because one couple dared to refuse non-fasting food and confess that they were Christians during a fasting season. But if it is...
If it is a time when I am keeping a private fast of my own, then I will break it. But not when it is Wednesday or Friday. Someone may say, “I am fasting.” You fast at home; here you do not. But when it is an appointed fast, I have a firm moral basis. It is not merely a Wednesday or a Friday; it is not the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross; it is not simply a mournful day. It is Great Lent, or the Dormition Fast. How could I break it? This is a confession of faith. And today this confession is not being demanded of us by the Turks. A married couple is called to confess Christ. When do they confess Him? When they accept the bearing of children—however many children God gives them: one, none, five, or a hundred. Such a person confesses Christ. But when he takes a pair of scissors...
and cuts his family down to the size he chooses, he does not confess Christ. He does not acknowledge Christ as the One who provides for him, as Almighty, or even as the One who will judge him one day and judge him justly. And if you tell him that he is not a Christian, he does not want to hear it; he takes offense. But since you do not do the works of Christ, and you do not acknowledge Christ as Almighty, as the One who provides, and as Love—the One who knows how much of a burden you can bear—how can you possibly be a Christian and confess Him? All those who became saints confessed Him. They did not simply pass through this life comfortably and then move on. They suffered greatly here so that they might fare well there. And the world, as you know, is man’s second enemy. Man’s first enemy is not Satan, as people say, nor the bad neighbors whom some blame for not letting us become holy. Those are excuses. Man’s first enemy is his own flesh. His second enemy is the world.
The world is a beast. Christ says, “Beware of men.” He did not say, “Beware of lions, tigers, wolves,” and so forth, but, “Beware of men.” A human being is the greatest beast when he is without faith. He is a double-edged sword. Be on your guard, especially against an educated unbeliever; he cuts both ways.
He justifies everything on the basis of his learning and his science, and so forth. You can see the results even today, although they ought to be exactly the opposite. But because Christ is absent—and it is Christ who gives knowledge, learning, and science their proper purpose—what is good turns into evil. When a person does not live the corresponding Christian life, he cannot speak about Christ.
They immediately seal his mouth with adhesive tape and sealing wax. You remember what I told you one evening. One of our own women went to a private clinic for her fifth abortion. She arrived as an emergency case, without having arranged the exact day with the doctor, because that saved her time and trouble. The doctor told her, “I have no room for you. You need to stay overnight, but I have nowhere to put you.” She would not leave. She was paying, after all, and the doctor did not want to lose the money. He cared nothing about the killing. So he thought of asking another lady, who had two beds in her room, whether she would permit them to accommodate a woman who urgently needed a bed for that night.
The next day they would rearrange things; a bed would become available somewhere, and they would move her there. The lady kindly agreed. She had just given birth to her fifth child. One woman was there for her fifth killing; the other, for her fifth child. When the anesthesia from the procedure wore off, it was around dawn. She fell asleep and later woke up while the other woman was also awake, and she turned her eyes toward her. The beds were positioned so that she could see the other lady’s identification card. They hang up a card with the patient’s name, progress, and other details. She saw unfamiliar letters and some unusual markings, and understood that they could not be...
She thought the woman must be Jewish or Arab, or something of that sort. In any case, she discreetly tried to draw out of the nurse who the woman across from her was. The nurse told her that she was Jewish. Our woman was delighted. Of course, she lit her vigil lamp and went to Church, but she threw her children into the refuse bin. And so she thought this was an opportunity to speak to the other woman about our true faith and about Christ. She won her sympathy, as we say, and began speaking to her. The Jewish woman remained silent for a long time. She listened politely and did not object at all. When our woman had finished presenting her Orthodox Christian teaching...
she then tried to discover what impression her words had made and whether she had persuaded the woman—whether she had shaken her loose from what she regarded as the mistaken faith of the Jews and drawn her toward our own. The Jewish woman politely said to her with a smile, “Have you finished?” “Yes, I have.” “I am sorry to upset you, but this is why: even if someone offered me the holiest religion in the world, I would never be willing to accept it if it did not have the power to keep a person from killing.” Understand that—it cuts to the bone. If your religion were true, it would have power from God to keep you from becoming a murderer. Since you are a murderer, I do not accept your religion.
This, then, is what Christ seeks from each of us. Will we confess Christ? Will we confess Him in our marital bed? Will we confess Him in our offspring? Will we confess Him in our outward appearance? Will we confess Him in our fashions? Is it right for a woman to present herself to us as a man, or for a man to present himself as a woman? Is it right? What has God said about this? He has said that when a woman puts on a man’s clothing, it is loathsome, an abomination before Him. How then, my lady, can you do this? Why do you not put yourself in order? Why do you turn your little boy into a little girl, with hair of who knows what length, and your little girl into a boy? Who is carrying out this alteration? “What will the world say?” You must confess Christ before the world. That is confession.
Every day your heart is torn by the words of this beast called the world, but you must get through it. Some say, “It is impossible to live in this world without conforming to it.” But why should the world not conform to you? Why must you conform to the world? Why must you do what the majority does instead of being the exception? Why should you receive a zero instead of a perfect twenty? Just because many receive zero, must you receive zero too—and then consider yourself successful? Why? Do you understand? The driver who brought me down here today was smoking, while a sign in front of him read, “No Smoking.” I asked him, “Who is that sign for?” We are not even ashamed before ourselves.
I said to him, “Suppose one day you quarrel with a passenger, and instead of calling you ‘sir,’ he addresses you contemptuously. What would happen?” He told me, “A few days ago I hit a man because he did not call me ‘sir.’” I ought to have been in your pocket to shout out that your master is this weed called tobacco. You are a slave to a weed; how can you be called a master? Ah, we have gone completely astray. We have failed in every direction; there is nothing right about us. As families, as individuals, as a society—in every way—we have failed. Yet we do not want to turn back and look deeply within. We do not want that. A person must therefore confess Christ. The world, I repeat, will tear his heart. Yes, you will feel ashamed to raise your hand and make the sign of the Cross.
People today do not make the sign of the Cross because they fear the eyes of others. “Whoever does not confess Me before men,” He says, “neither will I confess him before My Father,” before the judgment seat above. He has made matters clear. “I told you these things,” He says. It is difficult, that is true. They will call us backward. They will label us madmen, Jesuits, and who knows what else. Go on your way and pay no attention, because God sees that you endure all these things for His sake. A person obeys Christ, and obedience is the greatest virtue. Christ became obedient unto death, even death on the Cross. Obedience to God is the greatest thing in the law of God, and it is for our own good.
Why should we side with the world for one reason or another? The world ought to fear us today. The fish will stand as witnesses against us when we are in Hell. A fish lives in the sea for twenty years and remains unsalted. If you ask it, “How is it that you lived in all that salt, absorbed none of it, and remained so unsalted?” it teaches you, my good man, that you too must live amid filth and remain undefiled. You must be in the world without belonging to the world. The Apostle Paul writes this; it is not my own teaching. You will live among the sexually immoral without becoming sexually immoral; among adulterers without becoming adulterers; among drunkards without becoming drunkards; among thieves without becoming thieves. The saints struggled. They struggled. They did not bend before this beast called the world.
Yet we do not regard the world as a beast; we seek its certificate of approval. We ask, “What will the world say?” rather than, “What will God say?” If you develop cancer, what matters—what the doctor says, or what God says? And if the doctor fails to detect the cancer, what will we say? We do not think about these things; we do not reflect deeply.
So, if a person will not confess Me, neither will I confess him. “Whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father who is in Heaven.” Someone may say that all this creates tension and leads to conflict: the husband will be set against the wife.
There will be conflict over food, over the flesh, over finances—everywhere. If one holds one conviction and the other holds another, they will lock horns like rams. There will be quarrels in the home, because the girls want their own way, the boys want theirs, the husband wants his, and the wife wants hers. If there is one Christian among them, what will happen? They will all turn against him, and there will be conflict. We think that Christ is peace, and He does desire peace; but Christ also brings warfare, and there will be warfare. “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” So you must contend. You must struggle in a good and humble manner. You must resist and refuse to go along with them, so long as you are standing for what is right. Why should you side with evil? Why should I side with you when you are in the wrong?
This is what is right. You may be unable to do it, but I can. You go your way, and I will go mine. Why are you determined to subject me to your appetites, your ideas, and your desires when they are neither lawful, right, nor moral, and when they will not withstand God’s judgment tomorrow? At times matters go so far that people separate. But this is not a separation for the sake of sin; it is a separation over faith and conduct. Why do people separate? Abroad, as you can see, ninety-nine divorces out of a hundred are caused by adultery, and especially adultery by women. If we conducted a study, we would find that the greatest proportion involved adulterous women.
That is not excusable. But other cases require discernment and struggle, especially when the separation is permanent. Many other matters, however, can be put right here by us. When the issue concerns Christ, the faith, and so forth, we must tighten the ropes as far as they can bear. We must struggle. Others will throw up their hands and say, “But you cannot manage it.” You yourself have not yet managed to become a person of God. Let me give you an example. When Daniel and the three young men were taken captive, Nebuchadnezzar ordered them to eat food from the royal table—meat and other things. But they were Jews, and the Jews had fasts. They had no intention...
even though they were captives and the king had commanded it, of breaking their fasts. Daniel went to the official in charge and said, “Please, let us not eat the royal delicacies. Bring them from the kitchen if you must, but do not give them to us. We will eat legumes and drink water.” “That cannot be done,” the official replied. “Why not?”
“In a few days the king will come to inspect you. He will find you weak and have my head cut off. He will say that I have been stealing your food allowance. This cannot be done.” In such circumstances Daniel persisted and prayed that God would illumine the official. I do not know what he would do with the others, but those who wished to fast should be allowed to fast. And what solution did the official devise?
“Let me try this,” he says. The official agrees to withhold the royal food, give them legumes instead, and test them after a few days to see how the young men are doing. If they begin to decline, he will stop the arrangement and say, “Gentlemen, this will not work; you will have to eat the royal food, because I cannot gamble with my own head.” In any case, the result was that the young men ate fasting food—legumes—and drank water.
No rich foods, no drinks—nothing from the royal table. Then, unexpectedly, the king summoned all these young men. When they were lined up before him, the four who had eaten legumes and drunk water were found to be healthier, better-looking, and ten times wiser in answering the king’s questions than all the others who had been living on rich foods. Do you understand?
What was behind it? “My God, grant that we may find grace in the sight of this man. He is doing his duty, but he does not believe. We do believe; let us find grace before him.” What woman has ever stood firm when her husband blasphemes Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos, and demands meat on Friday—even on Great and Holy Friday? Who has stood her ground and said, “My God, illumine him. If he wants to eat it, then let him at least leave me free not to eat it, since I am still able to fast”? The same applies in dealing with a child, a mother, or brothers and sisters. Who has stood firm and cried, “My God,” asking God to help in such a situation? The time will come when one person will do what is his to do, and the other will do what is his.
They will be divided, because Christ came to bring a sword and to gather those who are His. And those who are His are the ones who do His will. Those who do His will are slaughtered here every day. It is as though a knife were driven into our hearts—and then twisted, twisted so that it hurts.
A person writhes and is slain every day before the demand of obedience, struggling to obey. He is slain. But what about us? How can we expect to make no struggle at all? Whatever fashion dictates, whatever television suggests, whatever the newspaper writes, whatever the neighbor does—we do the same. We even add our own seasoning and sauce, going still further so that we can outdo the other person. If someone does not struggle, he cannot become a saint. He must struggle and accept deprivation. He must deny his flesh, his worldly glory, and his ego, because whatever he gives up here, he will gain there. “Where blood flows out, the Spirit flows in,” as the Fathers say.
We think that those who struggle here, those who do not follow the ways of the world, are fools. Let us not think them foolish. They are wise—wiser than we are.
Therefore, for a person to become a saint, he must begin to be sanctified here and now. He must struggle; and if he struggles and preserves his integrity, whether unmarried or married, he will be able to approach the sanctifying Mysteries—especially Holy Communion—provided that Holy Confession and metanoia, repentance, come first. In this way he will be sanctified, so that whenever death finds him, he can say to the Lord, “Lord, here I am.” He cannot become holy by himself. He must make the effort, and upon that effort the grace of the Holy Spirit will act through Holy Communion, through the Body and Blood of Christ. If only we could reach the point of receiving Holy Communion every day, because it is Holy Communion that raises the soul, cleanses sins, and sets a person’s life in order. But we do not want to stop.
We do not want to put an end to the matters of the flesh and the world, and this is precisely why anti-Christian ways appear in our children. Together with you, I pray to God that, through His saints, He may have mercy on us also, so that we may not become great, but may become little for the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.

Αυτό θα πρέπει να κάνουμε κι εμείς: ένα μικρό αγώνα. Και όταν ο άνθρωπος αρχίζει και αγωνίζεται, ο Θεός είναι μαζί του, τον βοηθάει. Με τους μη αγωνιζομένους ο Θεός δεν είναι μαζί τους. Θα ήθελα να σας κάνω κοινωνούς των σκέψεων της Εκκλησίας επάνω στο θέμα το πώς ο άνθρωπος αγιάζει. Γιατί, αν δεν λέγουν ορισμένοι, «πήγαινε εσύ να αγιάσεις και άφησέ με εμένα». Και πήγαινε πού; Πήγαινε. Ποιος ο προορισμός; Εσύ να φας τη μελιτζάνα και την μπάμια του Θεοδόπουλου και να γλείψεις τα χωνάκια, το παγωτό; Γι’ αυτό ήρθες εδώ; Δυστυχισμένοι άνθρωποι! Εγώ πάω να αγιάσω και με ειρωνεύεστε, ε; Εσύ πού πας;
Έχουμε έργα ανάλογα που να αντέχουν; Δεν έχουμε. Τα έργα μας δεν είναι σωστά, δεν είναι ορθόδοξα, δεν είναι απότοκα πίστεως, διότι ο άνθρωπος που πιστεύει στον Χριστό και πιστεύει ότι χρειάζεται μια ζωή ανάλογος, πνευματική, για να περάσει μέσα, θα αγωνιστεί. Και έχει να αγωνιστεί πρώτα με τον εαυτό του. Η σάρξ του, παραδείγματι, είναι εχθρός και της σαρκός δεν πρέπει να χαριζόμεθα. Εμείς χαριζόμεθα της σαρκός. Υποκύπτουμε εις τας ορέξεις της, εις τας επιθυμίας της. Τότε, τι αν ο Χριστός είναι Θεός και εγώ είμαι πόρνος και εγώ είμαι μοιχός;
Φαΐ, μα για τη σάρκα, μα για τα οικονομικά, παντού. Αν ένας είναι του ενός φρονήματος και ο άλλος του άλλου, θα πιαστούμε σαν κριάρια. Καβγάς! Καβγάς στο σπίτι, γιατί τα κορίτσια θέλουν τα δικά τους, τα αγόρια τα δικά τους, ο σύζυγος τα δικά του, η γυναίκα τα δικά της. Αν είναι κάποιος χριστιανός μέσα εκεί, τι θα γίνεται; Όλοι εναντίον του θα πέσουν, θα γίνει καβγάς. Νομίζουμε ότι ο Χριστός είναι ειρήνη, επιθυμεί την ειρήνη, αλλά είναι και πόλεμος ο Χριστός, θα γίνει πόλεμος. «Μη νομίσετε ότι ήλθον βαλείν ειρήνην επί την γην· ουκ ήλθον βαλείν ειρήνην, αλλά μάχαιραν». Έτσι, θα παλέψεις, θα αγωνιστείς όμορφα, ταπεινά, θα αντιταχθείς, δεν θα συνταχθείς, όσον έχεις το σωστό εσύ. Γιατί θα συνταχθείς με το κακό; Γιατί θα συνταχθώ με σένα που δεν έχεις το σωστό;
«Θα έρθει με λίγες μέρες ο βασιλεύς να σας επιθεωρήσει και θα σας βρει αδύνατους και θα μου πάρει το κεφάλι εμένα. Θα πει ότι κλέβω το σιτηρέσιό σας. Αυτό δεν μπορεί να γίνει». Σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις επιμένει ο Δανιήλ και προσεύχεται στον Θεό να τον φωτίσει. Δεν ξέρω τι θα κάνει με τους άλλους· γι' αυτούς που θέλουν να νηστέψουν, να τους αφήσουν να νηστέψουν. Και τι σοφίζεται αυτός;
