Summary
The lecturer begins by teaching that every additional year of life is granted by God as a responsibility and an opportunity for repentance, not merely for enjoyment. John’s survival from Herod’s massacre and his upbringing in the wilderness are presented as works of divine providence preparing him for his unique ministry. Christ’s testimony that no one born of women was greater than John establishes the Forerunner’s singular place among the prophets and saints.

After this break, it was time for us to meet again.
During these days many people celebrated their name days—those named John, for example, and those named Manolis, Christina, Chrysoula, and so on; a great many people. We pray that the blessing of God may be with them. We also pray that the crown of this year of God’s goodness may be blessed for them by the Lord, who has granted us to enter this new year as well.
I want to believe that you too believe that the one who has granted us to enter it is not...
any one of us, but the Lord. He is the one who granted it. It is not because we were careful, as some people say. “He takes care of his health,” they say. Well, because he takes care of his health, does that mean he will not die? Or because he has the means to care for his health, does that mean he will not die? He still dies. When a person remains alive, there is a reason, and Christ knows that reason. When God adds years to someone’s life, that person should be filled with fear and understand that he is not yet as he should be. That is precisely why God gives him more years. He does not add them merely so that the man can enjoy himself, as some say—to enjoy his house, enjoy his car, enjoy his dog, or whatever else. These things are lies; never believe them. “My God, You are leaving me here a little longer, so I must not yet be as I should be.”
“I must become as I should be.” God’s display of such longsuffering and goodness should inspire fear. It lays a responsibility upon a person to become better or to fulfill some purpose. God still needs him for something and preserves him so that he may fulfill a purpose, for reasons the person himself does not know. And again he must ask why: “Why did I live to see the morning today? Why did I reach the evening today? Why did I enter the new year? Why?” This concerns him deeply. This is how a Christian thinks—a Christian who came into this world in order to die, and dies in order to live. So many people wanted to be here this year, but they departed during the past year, some in a natural way and others in an unnatural way, for many departed unnaturally, not peacefully.
Some departed because of old age; some because of foolishness; and some because of carelessness, causing great harm in the process. Recently an entire family died, if you read the newspapers. A man took his wife and children to Thessaloniki to watch a football match, put the car in the hands of the young driver, and the young man got them all killed. They did not depart in a natural way; they departed unnaturally, foolishly—how can I put it? God’s will is always involved, but at the same time a person must also be careful. And if we could stand at the gates of the cemeteries and ask each person how he came to be there, we would be ashamed. One might say, “My God, why do You put up with this filth from these people and keep them here?”
You might have sent them away an hour sooner. How thoughtlessly they reason and act in the face of this great gesture of Yours, by which You give them this time.
You entrust them with a capital sum; it is credit extended by the Son, and this is how they exploit it, abusing Your goodness. As I tell you, our customary wish of “many years” is not merely one of our familiar falsehoods. Every year added to a person’s life is a responsibility. I think you know many examples of this. I have merely touched upon the subject. During the days when we were not together, many events and feasts passed: everything before, during, and after Christmas; everything before, during, and after Theophany; and yesterday, the commemoration of the greatest man after Christ.
Our Christ said this concerning the Venerable Forerunner. So this evening I wanted to dwell on what is most recent—if, in matters of faith, we can really speak of things as recent or old, since they are always fresh and all of them concern us. In any case, I wanted to dwell on yesterday’s feast and, more specifically, on the person of the Venerable Forerunner. Few truly honored him—that is, few imitated him. Many received visitors, but they had no desire to speak at all about the person who bestowed this honor upon them and gave them the opportunity to open their homes and receive good wishes because of his great name. They should have wanted to learn about his life and enter into its mystery. Many times we light a candle before the Venerable Forerunner.
Yet we reject the life of the Venerable Forerunner. This is also a rebuke to us, together with what I told you earlier about our responsibility for the time God adds to our lives. In any case, I would like those who do not know to learn that the Venerable Forerunner has a history that was foretold before his birth.
In the whole history of the world and in the divine plan, only four persons have such a history foretold beforehand, together with one sacred symbol. The first person is our Lord Jesus Christ; the second is the Holy Spirit; the third is the Most Holy Theotokos; the fourth is the Venerable Forerunner; and the one symbol is...
the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross. We know beforehand of these four persons and this one symbol, before their appearance in the world. Once, when our Christ spoke about the Venerable Forerunner, He said: “For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send My messenger before Your face.” It was written about him. Nothing was written about me concerning when I would be born, nor about any other human being, however great they may have been or may yet become in this world. Each person’s history is written from the day he is born until the day he dies. I did not know when I would be born, nor did I know where I would be born.
No one knew how I would be born. We learned these things after my birth. The same is true of every human being. But concerning Christ, for example, we knew where He would be born, when He would be born, and how He would be born. Concerning the Holy Spirit, we knew that He would descend to the earth one day and what His role would be. We also knew of the Most Holy Theotokos, who would fulfill this role by lending flesh to God. We knew that she would be a virgin and would remain a virgin—the Ever-Virgin. Concerning the Venerable Cross, we knew beforehand: we have prophecies, images, and symbols. Concerning the Venerable Forerunner, we knew beforehand that he would come before the face of the Lord; he would come as a forerunner. The Greek word is made up of two parts: one who goes before on the...
way. And what is this way? It is the unique and unrepeatable path God followed when He came and became man. This journey, this passage of God from heaven to earth in order to find humanity, had never happened before and must never happen again.
If people are asked how many forerunners there are, they do not know—not even Christians. Each of the great events has been accompanied by a forerunner. The first great event, God’s coming to find humanity, was accompanied by the Venerable Forerunner, John. There is another great event: humanity going to find God. For God descended into the world to find humanity, so that humanity in turn might find God. This ascent of man into heaven has Christ as its Forerunner, the first who went in the flesh...
into Paradise. It is there that we long to go when we pray, “Grant me the homeland for which I yearn; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” This ascent has Christ as its Forerunner. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, Saint Paul writes that Christ has become the Forerunner on our behalf. He urges people to cast their anchor. Every ship that has an anchor casts it down into the sea. A human being is also like a little vessel, a small boat sailing toward eternity...
and he too has an anchor that he must cast. It is the anchor of hope. Hope is an anchor that holds a person fast, so that he is not driven off course, or so that Satan does not lead him to take his own life. Hope is indeed an anchor. But a person does not cast this anchor downward; he casts it upward, into heaven, and takes hold above. It flies upward and takes hold there, where Christ has entered as the Forerunner on our behalf. Christ is there. So the person casts forth his hope, his anchor takes hold of Christ, and he is held fast. No matter how much the circumstances of this world trouble him, no matter how the waves, storms, tides, and winds of this world torment him, as long as he holds fast to Christ and his anchor is secured in Him, he is not in danger. He may be tossed about; he may become dizzy; he may suffer; he may even be sick—but he cannot drown. He cannot drown. Those who...
drown and are overwhelmed are those who do not trust in Christ. They do not have this anchor of hope, and they do not fasten it to Christ. Writing about these things in the sixth chapter of Hebrews, Saint Paul tells all the faithful to cast their anchor. Those of you who have the New Testament should read it calmly at home. He also writes about other doctrinal matters, but at the end you will see that he urges all believers to cast their anchor, which reaches Christ at the right hand of the Father, where he says that Christ has entered as “the Forerunner on our behalf.” He has gone ahead as our Forerunner. Humanity, human nature, has sent forth its firstfruits, as we say: the Firstborn from the dead, the One who broke the bonds of death and has taken our nature up into heaven. God’s coming into the world was a great event, and John was its Forerunner. Another great event is...
the world going to find God, and Christ is its Forerunner. And another equally great event is this: “He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” Just as Christ’s first coming had Elijah as its forerunner—and His Second Coming... forgive me. Just as Christ’s first coming had John as its Forerunner, so the Second Coming of Christ has Elijah as its forerunner. That second coming of Christ also has a forerunner, the Prophet Elijah, who, as you know, remains alive to this day and will return before Christ comes to judge the world. The Prophet Elijah will return. This is why the Church speaks so beautifully: “The angel in the flesh, the foundation of the prophets...”
“the second forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ, Elijah the glorious.” There are, then, three forerunners: the Venerable Forerunner, our Lord Jesus Christ, and Elijah the Forerunner. They belong to these three great events: God’s coming down, humanity’s going up, and the Second Coming. The Prophet Isaiah explained this event plainly, as we say in everyday speech. Eight hundred and fifty years before Christ, in the third verse of his fortieth chapter, he wrote: “For this is he who was spoken of by the Prophet Isaiah, saying...” This, he says, is the man of whom...
The Prophet Isaiah had said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.” These words refer to the Honorable Forerunner. The Evangelist Matthew records them in connection with the events we commemorate around the days of Theophany, when our Christ was baptized: a voice crying out in the wilderness.
He reminds us of the voice from the wilderness, which said, “Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.” This was written in 850 BC, and it refers to the Honorable Forerunner. This also brings us to what I told you earlier, to another occasion when our Christ spoke about the Honorable Forerunner and said, “What did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments?” Did you come here expecting to see the Forerunner dressed in a suit and tie, with gloves and all the rest?
Did you come to see someone like that? You would have to go to royal courts or down into the cities; there is no such man here. “What did you go out to see? A reed shaken by the wind?” You know how a reed trembles at the slightest rustle, at the gentlest breath of wind. We sometimes say the same thing: “He trembles like a reed leaf.” But he was not like that either. He was neither weak, fearful, nor cowardly, nor was he soft and well-fed. “But what did you go out to see? A prophet?” Now things change. If you went out to see the prophet, then “Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.” He is not merely a prophet; he is something more. “For this is he...”
“...of whom it is written.” Our Christ now takes up this testimony. In other words, the Old Testament had written about the Honorable Forerunner. Our Christ goes to the relevant passage—specifically to the Prophet Malachi, chapter 3, verse 1—and finds these words: “For this is he,” He says, “of whom it is written.” What is written, Lord? “Behold, I send My angel”—He calls John His angel—“before Your face.” God says this concerning Christ: “Before Your face I shall send My angel, who will prepare Your way before You.” He will go out into the world and proclaim His coming beforehand.
When a king or prime minister is going to visit a city, others go ahead of him to prepare the people, arrange a place for him to stay, and generally make everything ready for his visit. So it was here: before the King of kings came, John the Forerunner was sent to fulfill this role. This, He says, is the man of whom the prophet wrote. We therefore have two prophecies describing the manner and the role of the Honorable Forerunner. Yet some people hear the words, “I send My angel,” and see him portrayed with wings in Byzantine icons—you may have noticed that the Honorable Forerunner has wings—and they suppose that by nature he is an angel.
He is not. He is called an angel because of his ministry and the role he was to fulfill. What do we call a courier? A messenger—one who brings and carries messages. In the same way, John is called an angel because of the role he was to fulfill when he came into the world and proclaimed: “He who comes after me has come to be before me.” Our Christ came six months after the Honorable Forerunner. Although He was six months younger, He was greater than John, because He is not only the Son of the Virgin; He is also the Son of God.
He would not merely become man; He was also God. As God, He is before me. As man, He is younger than me. This is why John says, “He who comes after me has come to be before me,” and that he himself was not worthy to loose the strap of His sandals. Thus he reveals our Christ not only as man but also as God: He has a history before His earthly coming; He existed before He came into the world—not as man, however. As man, He was conceived when John had been in his mother’s womb for six months. When John was six months in Elizabeth’s womb, our Lord was conceived. These two prophecies, then, as you hear—Isaiah, chapter...
40, verse 3, written in 850 BC, and Malachi, chapter 3, verse 1, written in 650 BC—both speak about the Honorable Forerunner.
According to the dates, the Honorable Forerunner should not have remained alive. But just as our Christ miraculously escaped Herod’s sword, so did the prophet. As you heard the day before yesterday, Herod ordered all the children two years old and under to be slaughtered, according to the time he had learned precisely from the Magi. John, therefore, should have been among them. He too was among the children under twenty-four months old. But just as God acted and sent our Lord away by speaking to Joseph in a dream—“Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt”—so also the elderly Elizabeth, evidently illumined by the Holy Spirit, perceived the danger and saw or heard what was happening: Herod’s soldiers were taking the children and slaughtering them. She too took her child and left her hut, her home. But where could an elderly woman go with a child in her arms when Herod’s soldiers were drawing near to her?
What would they have done? They would have seized her, and however much she refused to surrender the child, they would have killed them both. Tradition tells us, however, that she took the child and fled. But how far could she run? She was being pursued; they would catch her. When she saw that they were about to overtake her and take the child, she offered a short prayer. A small mountain stood before her, and she said, “O mountain, receive the child and his mother.” She said, “Receive the child—take my child. O mountain, receive the child and his mother.” Miraculously, she found herself on the other side of that mountain, and in this way she escaped Herod’s sword.
This is why John came to be in the wilderness and remained there. He did not go there simply to spend the summer. John was driven into the wilderness by circumstances beyond his control, and there he stayed. Indeed, immediately after the passage I read to you, the Evangelist writes: “Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.” These were products of the wilderness. He had nothing there with which to sew a garment, nor anything else with which to cover his skin and body. And he had...
...a hide not from a sheep but from a camel, as it says here. Just as the Prophet Elijah had a sheepskin, a sheep’s hide, so the Honorable Forerunner wore camel’s hair. He remained there for many years. We are not told how long his mother lived. In any case, it appears that she died and that he remained there alone, sustaining himself.
Put all of this together.
If God has not counted you worthy to go to Bethlehem, where the events I am telling you about took place, ask the Lord to count you worthy. Among the other remarkable things you will see there...
...you will also see the relics of the fourteen thousand infants slain by Herod. When you look upon those tiny relics, you can see that they belong to infant children, not to young goats or lambs. They are human remains, the remains of little children, piled in great heaps. There are also some bones of adults. Besides the infants’ skulls, there are several larger skulls. These belong to their parents, who were slaughtered with them. They would not surrender their children, so they too were slain and executed with them. Here the words of our Lord are fulfilled: “If these should keep silent...”
“...the stones would cry out.” These remains remind us that the word is sure and true. Everything happened exactly as it is written. If someone who knew Holy Scripture and the relevant tradition could go there, he would see this whole picture vividly laid out before him. There, as I say, all the evidence remains, giving a person the opportunity to see that everything spoken of and discussed is true. As I mentioned earlier, it appears that John’s parents had passed away. They were already advanced in age; his mother was between ninety and a hundred years old.
She conceived and gave birth to him. Yes, indeed: he was conceived according to the promise. “The order of nature is overcome.” “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” Indeed, because of his seemingly reasonable objection, the elder Zacharias was chastened and remained unable to speak until all these things had taken place. “How shall this happen to me? How can this be? I am an old man, and she,” he says, “is advanced in her days”—she too is elderly and advanced in age. But as I have told you, where God is at work, there is no place for asking how. When God says or wills something, do not place human reasoning in the way. I do not know how He will accomplish it. As we have said before, we have solved none of the Mysteries that surround us.
We accept all of them by faith, yet religion is the one matter we refuse to accept. Everything else we accept. The Evangelist says that John “had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist.” Have you ever wondered about this? It would surely have been much easier for him to find the hairy hide of a sheep or ram than to find a camel and go through all that work. And yet there was a particular reason why he wore it. The Honorable Forerunner is the last prophet. He did not merely prophesy as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Daniel had done...
They died and were gathered to their fathers, as Holy Scripture says. But the Honorable Forerunner both prophesied and saw with his own eyes what had been foretold. Indeed, he even pointed Him out with his finger: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Behold the One of whom it was written—John actually points Him out to the people. Thus he was the last prophet concerning the events of Christ’s coming.
The last prophet.
The camel is an animal considered half clean and half unclean, because in the Old Testament there were clean and unclean animals: animals they were permitted to eat and animals that were forbidden. An animal was considered clean if it chewed the cud and had a divided hoof, like the sheep and the goat. The foot of some animals, such as the horse and the donkey, is not divided at the bottom. The camel, then, is an animal that chews the cud.
In that respect it is considered a clean animal. But its foot is not divided; it is like that of the mule or the horse, and in that respect it is an unclean animal. Therefore, by wearing a garment of camel’s hair, the holy Forerunner proclaimed that he was a person standing between clean and unclean, between darkness and light, between the Law and grace, between the shadow and the reality. He stood at the boundary, and this was what he proclaimed through the garment he wore. The Evangelist then makes a further distinction, saying that the belt was “around his waist.”
He says, “a leather belt around his waist.” In other words, he was girded here with a leather belt. A person who is not girded cannot walk properly. A person fastens his belt firmly so that he can walk. He does not leave his clothes hanging loose, open, and flapping this way and that. He either ties or fastens them, arranging them somehow so that he can walk easily. John did this with a leather belt. He did not tie a piece of wire, twine, rope, or even a vine shoot of the sort found out in the fields. Scripture says, “a leather belt.” That means an animal was slaughtered, its skin was removed and worked, the flesh was cleaned away,
the skin was dried, and then he used it. In other words...
He did not go through all that work on the hide for no reason. It expressed something extreme: the flesh contributes nothing to a person’s salvation. The flesh must be dried out; the flesh must fast; the flesh must suffer and not live in comfort. And that is exactly what he did there. He lived on honey—wild honey—and locusts. That is why the Fathers express this wisdom in a few words: “Where blood flows in, the spirit flows out.” When someone eats well, feeds himself richly, and pampers himself, do not expect spiritual life there. The spirit is driven away. And you see...
Children who live in comfort, especially today, from the moment they are born, become dull in understanding, dull in virtue, dull in chastity, and dull in self-restraint. John deprived himself of everything. He too had a right to the good things God created for humanity. Everything found in a meat market—whom is it there for? For dogs? No, for human beings. Yet he never entered a meat market. And everything in a fish market—all that you see there—whom was it made for? For cats? No, for human beings. Yet he never entered one. He did not even have fruit, but confined himself to only two things.
They were products of the wilderness: wild honey from the crevices of the rocks there, and locusts, which are plentiful in the wilderness of the Jordan. This was his food, so exceedingly simple—the food of the most spiritual of men, the most spiritual of men. For, as Christ said, no woman has given birth to anyone greater than the holy Forerunner; no one greater has been born. “Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Forerunner,” Christ said. That is why, when our Church came to compose the Saint’s dismissal hymn, the apolytikion, it rested on that testimony. Because, you know...
The apolytikia and kontakia contain only a few words about each Saint, yet in those few words they contain the whole essence, the whole meaning. The Church borrowed a few words from Proverbs, from the tenth chapter of the Old Testament, where it says, “The memory of the righteous is celebrated with praises.” “The memory of the righteous is celebrated with praises.” These words are taken from the tenth chapter of Proverbs. How does the apolytikion continue? “But the testimony of the Lord is sufficient for you, O Forerunner.” What could we say about you? Since the Lord Himself said that you are the greatest, anything we might now add would only diminish it. Whatever words we might devise in order to speak about your person would do more harm than good, since Christ Himself found that great testimony.
Let me quote another hymn so that you may understand. Have you ever noticed what it says about the beauty of virginity? Gabriel, amazed, says: What can I say to you? How does the hymn put it? “Awestruck by the beauty of your virginity and the surpassing radiance of your purity, Gabriel cried aloud to you, O Theotokos: What worthy hymn of praise can I offer you?” What could I say that would be worthy of your person? What could I bring you? I can only rest content with what the Angel said. And what did the Angel say? “Rejoice, O Full of Grace.” There is nothing greater than that. So the hymn rests on the words God spoke to her through the Angel: “Rejoice, O Full of Grace.” The same is true here of the holy Forerunner.
“The testimony of the Lord is sufficient for you, O Forerunner.” After Christ, the holy Forerunner was the greatest of men, as Christ Himself says. And yet he did not live a comfortable life. Did God not make these things for us? Did He not make them? Today we hear young men say to us, “Did He not make women for us men?” And young women say, “Did He not make men for us?” Really? Is that how it is? Did He not make these things? Yes, He did. But have you ever considered when He made all these good things? Have you ever read about it or tried to discover how it happened? Do you know that He created man last? First He made all these things. He stocked man’s refrigerator, as it were, and then placed His cherished child inside, so that he would lack nothing anywhere.
He told him, “All things are permitted, except this one.” Everything else is yours. But man did not remain in the place where God had set him; he followed his own will. Then he lost the command, “All things are permitted,” and Saint Paul qualified it by adding, “but not all things are beneficial.” “All things are permitted,” Paul says, “but not all things are beneficial.” Things had changed. Yes, everything is for you, but not everything is good for you—and not only spiritually, but also bodily and materially. Very well, suppose I eat without ever fasting and consume meat day and night. What will happen? If I might otherwise have lived sixty years, I will live forty. By doing this, I merely shorten even my natural life
through illnesses and a thousand other things. The harm is not only spiritual. I may indulge in every bodily and worldly pleasure, but I will reach the cemetery sooner. Leave the soul aside for the moment, with all that concerns it. Leave that poor creature out of account, since many people do not treat their own soul with even the care they would show a cat. It is not beneficial. Yet the Forerunner, although these things had been made for him as well, became the greatest of men while living on only two things: wild honey and locusts. Did he suffer any real harm? “A fool,” others would have called him. “He is not normal,” others would have said. “Will that man have a good life? Just look at him.” But whom should we really be looking at—the Forerunner, or ourselves? Life contains profound wisdom, and Christ left us profound wisdom concerning how life is to be lived. That is why Peter says:
“He left you an example, that you should follow in His steps.” Through His life, Christ left us a road, footprints in which we may walk, certain that we will reach the destination appointed for every human being. Yet this has gone unnoticed. John wore a leather belt around his waist because, unless a person tightens the reins of his flesh, sooner or later he will go off the rails. He must take care to eat not merely for the pleasure of eating, but in order to live, and to eat only as much as he needs. He must provide his body only with what is necessary.
We misuse these things. We celebrate the Forerunner and bring him into our homes, as I told you. First we open our homes in honor of a hermit, an angelic man; then we loosen every restraint, sprawl about, get drunk, dance, revel, disgrace ourselves, and create occasions of dishonor for others—for young men, young women, married people, and so forth. We do this in the presence of the man who rebuked such behavior, the man who gave even his own head because of such sins in the world. For do you know what John Chrysostom says? “Where there is dancing, where there are musical instruments—where there is dancing, there too is the devil.” Even if Herodias is not here, he says, even if Salome is not here, and even if that other man, her uncle, is not here, and so forth...
The devil is the same devil who was present at that dance on that night, when the precious head of the Forerunner was given as a prize. The very same devil is there. Yet this passes unnoticed. On a day when we ought to mourn, we revel. As for yesterday’s feast, one might perhaps make some allowance; it is a day of festal freedom. But woe to those who hold celebrations on August 29, when the precious head was given as a prize for that corrupt dance, and who have lambs, feasting, and revelry from the evening before and throughout the entire day. What will they have to say? There are places that hold festivals and celebrate on the twenty-ninth, the day of the Beheading of the precious head of the Forerunner.
Here again, a person can return to the historical events by going to Samaria, to Sebaste. To this day, traces remain of the place where the precious head of the Forerunner was handed over. His tomb is also there, together with the tombs of Elisha and Obadiah—three tombs side by side. Unfortunately, today these places are in Arab hands. The floor where the dance took place that night also remains. Its columns are still there. The whole area covers perhaps two or three stremmas, and its remains survive to this day. There are also bloodstains in the prison at Machaerus,
near the Dead Sea, where the executioner went and beheaded him that night. None of these things concerning this person should pass unnoticed. Of course, some people are troubled, as you know, and there is much discussion—a matter that truly does invite discussion—about the end of this holy man. For this man, so great, foretold by prophecy, chosen, and endowed with so much, met an inglorious end. Yet all these great men, those who were great in God’s sight, met inglorious ends. Did the Lord have a glorious end? Was His end not inglorious? Did not all His prophets perish by the sword?
Did the Apostles not suffer by the sword, the hammer, and the nail? And John Chrysostom, that golden tongue—where and how did he die? They led him in chains toward Cucusus in Armenia. What would the people who saw the guards dragging away a priest have said? How were they to know that he was the Patriarch of Constantinople, that he was Chrysostom? Yet God permitted it. People might have said, “Ah, that wretch! What disgusting thing has he done?” But he was Chrysostom, and he died there in exile. The same thing happened to the holy Forerunner. God did not intervene. Human wickedness did this. In this instance, God stepped aside and permitted him
to meet this inglorious end—inglorious according to the world. A person’s true story begins after death. From that point the real days open before him. From there the true years of eternity are counted. The years here are nothing. The question is the state in which we find ourselves after our departure from this world. And, as you know, the life of the Forerunner continues beyond death, just as everyone’s life does. You have seen where the iconography of our Church places him today: beside our Lord. In the icon of the Judgment, it again places him on the Lord’s left, while on His right is His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. Our Church, the only Church that possesses the Holy Spirit,
has hastened to enlighten us on this matter so that people will not be troubled. It says that “the Beheading of the precious head of the Forerunner came to pass by a certain divine dispensation.”
“So that he might proclaim to those in Hades that God had appeared in the flesh, the One who takes away the sin of the world.” The Forerunner was not the forerunner only for those here; he was also the forerunner for those who were in Hades. For Christ will not judge only those who lived from the day He came into the world onward. He will also judge all those from Adam until that day, whose souls were in Hades. And just as He sent the Forerunner here, in body and spirit, to people who had body and spirit, and John preached to them, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,” and so forth, in the same way John descended into Hades and preached to the spirits in prison.
Before Christ, people went to Hades. Before Christ there was no Hell and Paradise. When Christ was crucified, He descended into Hades and was received there. “Praise Him, you children; bless Him, you people; exalt Him above all forever.” You remember the events of Great Friday. All these things remind us and teach us. John, then, was slain because of Herod’s wickedness and corruption. Yet Herod did nothing but serve God’s purpose. On the one hand, he offered a great crown to God’s martyr, the honorable Forerunner; on the other, he served the divine plan. You are slaughtering him? Then let him go down there an hour before Me.
Let him preach. And John descended and preached; afterward, Christ went there. Just as John came here first and preached, and then Christ came, so there too John went first, and afterward Christ went and preached. And those who received Him, He took with Him. “And upon those in the tombs bestowing life.” We do not even understand what “Christ is risen” means. We think that “Christ is risen” speaks about us. It does not speak about us at all. Or that it speaks about Christ’s Resurrection? It is not speaking about that either. It speaks about those whom Christ brought to life when He descended into Hades. “Christ,” it says, “is risen from the dead.” It simply announces the fact. “Trampling down death by death.” By His death, He crushed death. “And upon those in the tombs bestowing life.” He brought to life all those who received Him.
He took them into Paradise. The first Church is not the one Peter established through his preaching at Pentecost. People were added to it then. The Church already had its supporting pillars, its foundations, and its principal structure. And to this day, people continue to be added to the Church of Christ. The building of the Church of Christ has not yet been completed. But down below, among its supports and foundations, it has great stones: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Daniel, and many, many others. When Christ descended into Hades, He remained there for thirty-three hours. Christ remained in Hades in His soul for as many hours as the years He lived here: thirty-three years here, thirty-three hours in Hades. From three o’clock on Friday afternoon, when He said, “It is finished,” until midnight between Saturday and Sunday—thirty-three hours.
He preached. Preaching presupposes acceptance. I am speaking now; if you wish, you accept what I say, and if you do not wish, you do not. Or you accept some things and reject others. You may reject everything or accept everything. In your freedom, you accept or refuse. God had not placed them beforehand in either Hell or Paradise, so that they might say, “If we are not doing well here, let us believe Him so that we may go over there.” No. They were all together in one place, all like prisoners condemned to death—Abraham too, and everyone else—so that, without being influenced by anything external, they might accept or reject the preaching Christ would bring them. John’s role belongs to this divine plan. “A certain divine dispensation took place.” A prominent Christian of great renown was once slaughtered in the marketplace of Constantinople, and unbelievers challenged John Chrysostom about it.
The unbelievers said, “Where is your God, when this man was slaughtered? He was slaughtered like a lamb.” John Chrysostom replied, “God did not wish to deprive him of his crowns.” It is a great thing and a great honor for a person to die as a martyr, especially when he suffers unjustly, as happened here with John.
It was not, then, because something had gone wrong. But in our vainglory we worry about everything: what slippers they will place beside us, where they will lay us, who will bury us, whether a bishop will be present, and all the rest. But these things are vainglory. The Saints never thought about such things. And here you see the greatest of men, the honorable Forerunner, suffering such a dishonorable death. You see this man of God, without even one relative there to care for him and bury him.
The same is true of all God’s great servants—His Apostles and His Prophets. So what do you understand from this? That some injustice was done? No injustice was done.
God blessed him and counted him worthy to receive yet another crown. I have spoken briefly to you about this person. He is a great person of the Church, though hidden from view. Always ask for his prayers, and for the prayers of his parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth. They belong to the close circle of Christ and have great boldness before Him. May his prayers be with the whole world, with our Church, and with us. Amen.

Παρά τη Νεκρά Θάλασσα, εκεί που πήγε ο Σπεκουλάτωρ και του πήρε το κεφάλι το βράδυ. Όλα αυτά δεν πρέπει να περνάνε απαρατήρητα γύρω από το πρόσωπο αυτό. Βέβαια, ορισμένοι σκανδαλίζονται, όπως ξέρετε, και μάλιστα γίνεται μια πολύ έτσι συζήτηση, που σηκώνει συζήτηση, αναφορικώς με το τέλος του αγίου ανθρώπου αυτού. Διότι ο τόσο μεγάλος, ο προφητευμένος, ο εκλεκτός, ο, ο, ο, είχε ένα άδοξο τέλος. Αλλά όλοι αυτοί οι μεγάλοι, οι κατά Θεόν μεγάλοι, όλοι είχαν άδοξον τέλος. Πως ο Κύριος είχε δεδοξασμένον τέλος; Δεν είχε άδοξο τέλος; Όλοι οι προφήτες του δεν πέρασαν από μαχαίρι;
