Summary

The lecture presents Saint Nektarios as a modern Orthodox saint through whom Christ continues to perform miracles wherever faith and genuine spiritual need are present. The account of his persecution as Bishop of Pentapolis contrasts the accusations made against him with his patience, humility, and refusal to retaliate against his accusers. The lecture concludes by placing Saint Nektarios among the many saints and incorrupt relics of Orthodoxy, while warning against slander directed at the Church, its clergy, and its holy people.

Next Sunday, besides its own proper observance as a Sunday, also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the great saint, Saint Nektarios. And tonight, by his grace and with your forbearance, I would like to speak about this person who, as you know, is so deeply loved because of the great grace he has received from our Christ and because of the many miracles he works in modern society. Everyone speaks of the miracles our Christ worked in Cana of Galilee, for example, in Capernaum, and throughout the Holy Land. But Christ has continued to work miracles every day, through all the years since He openly appeared among us. Whether directly Himself, through His Most Holy Mother, or through other saints, Christ always works miracles wherever there is need and faith. I say wherever there is need—where fulfilling that need would truly benefit the person—because many times, although faith is present, there is no such need. The miracle must not take place, because if it did, it would have the opposite result. And Christ, being all-wise, knows when He should grant health to someone, for example, or grant his petition, and when He should not. For is it not a miracle when...

He grants our petition? When He grants our petition, one miracle takes place. When He does not grant it, a thousand miracles take place at once, and we need to thank God even more when He does not grant our petition than when He does. But we always judge things according to what is temporary and according to our bodily or material interests. God sees them in the light of eternity and from the perspective of the soul and its eternal destiny. We see the saints, but we fail to notice that Christ stands behind them. Not even the Theotokos works miracles by herself. Or rather, I should say this of the saints: they all work miracles on behalf of Christ. If we pay attention to their dismissal hymns, we will see it there.

“Glory to Him who has glorified you”—that is, to Christ. “Glory to Him who has crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.” The One who performs divine works and miracles, for example, is Christ. Glory, therefore, belongs to Him. Unless Christ gives His approval, no miracle takes place. Even if all the saints and martyrs were to appear together, along with His Most Holy Mother, no miracle would take place. Christ will give His approval, and then the miracle will happen.

The saints make supplication and intercede, as does His Most Holy Mother; and if Christ gives His approval, because the miracle will benefit that person’s soul, then it takes place. Saint Nektarios, as I was saying, is deeply loved and very well known—not only within the small confines of Aegina, nor only within Greece, nor even merely throughout Europe, or wherever else...

Today Saint Nektarios is a saint of all five continents. The whole world knows him and, I dare say, after our Most Holy Theotokos, he has more churches dedicated to him throughout the world than anyone else. And yet it has only been about twenty years—perhaps even less—since the Church officially proclaimed him a saint. But from the very day he reposed in 1920, the people recognized his sainthood even more quickly, because Saint Nektarios worked miracles even while he was still alive. In comparison with the other saints—Athanasius the Great, the divine John Chrysostom, and those from the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth centuries—he is a very recent saint. Yet the miracles he has worked and continues to work every day...

surpass the miracles of all the other saints put together. In this way Christ has given people the opportunity not to have to travel to Capernaum to behold Him. Now, by spending fifty drachmas and going to Aegina, a person can behold Christ. For wherever there are tombs of saints and miracles take place, wherever there are relics of saints, there the side of our Christ is laid bare for us to touch. It is like Thomas the Apostle, who said, “Unless I put in my finger and touch, I will not believe.” Very well, put in your finger. And he put in his finger and cried out, “My Lord and my God!” And Christ said, “Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

The same thing happens now. Put in your finger even now. Come here and put in your finger. See for yourself. Come and read. Here are the votive offerings. Come and see the chains that once bound the demon-possessed. Come and see the offerings shaped like the eyes of those who were sick. Come and see the crutches of those who were lame. Come, come, come and see—and “do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Yet people do not want to reflect on it. There is so much light, especially among the saints. We Orthodox have received great mercy from God. Others are spiritually dry and dead; they have nothing to hold on to, nothing to strengthen them in the true faith. But we have the friends of God, the friends of Christ—the saints, who offered their very selves.

...to reflect each time and to ask himself, or discuss with others: What was it that made this saint so great? How did he come to have such boldness before Christ? A simple villager from Velo in Corinthia wrote to me a few days ago: “But, Mr. Panagopoulos,” he said, “what kind of saint is this? He never says no to anyone. He puts his own back in the middle, between Christ and the person in need, and so he settles every case in favor of the people.” What was it, then, that made him so great? Saint Nektarios possesses a threefold distinction. He is not only a saint, for there are other saints as well; he is also a wonderworker. And he is not only a wonderworker, for there are other wonderworkers as well; he is also a myrrh-streamer.

The saint has three distinctions: he is a saint, a wonderworker, and a myrrh-streamer. Many saints are wonderworkers but not myrrh-streamers, while others are myrrh-streamers but not wonderworkers. He has all three to his credit. And once he himself gave the answer—I have mentioned this before in connection with another subject—to an abbot on the Holy Mountain. When he was officially proclaimed a saint by the Church and the Patriarchate, the monks became divided. Some accepted him, while others did not. This grieved the abbot. So, in order to resolve the issue and reconcile the fathers—because such things...

are displeasing to spiritual people, when some oppose what the Church has declared—he called them to keep vigil after a three-day fast. And indeed, they fasted for three days and kept vigil. On the third day, before the abbot went down to the church in the morning—they rise at one o’clock in the night—there was a discreet knock at the door, the way a monk knocks: tap, tap, tap, three times. Then came the words, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” If the person inside answers, “Amen,” the door is opened. So there was a discreet knock at the abbot’s door, and the abbot answered from within, “Amen.” The door opened, and Saint Nektarios entered.

The abbot saw him and recognized him. “Sit down, Brother Athanasios,” the saint told him—for Athanasios was the abbot’s name. “Do not weary the fathers. Let them go and rest. It is enough; they have been fasting and keeping vigil for three days. I assure you that our Lord has sanctified me. I am a saint, a wonderworker, and a myrrh-streamer. And He sanctified me for no other reason, Brother Athanasios, except that I forgave.” It was as though he wished to add, “That is why I forgive you as well, even now when you deny me.” “It was not because I gave more alms than you, not because I prayed more than you, and not because I practiced greater self-restraint than you.”

“It was because I forgave.” I have read many accounts showing what it means for a person to have the strength to forgive. But when I heard this, it was as though a heavy seal came down upon me, together with a severe rebuke. One must have the strength to forgive as though nothing had ever happened—as though it had never happened at all. Not, “Something happened, but never mind.” No, nothing happened; I have kept no record of it. A person who does not have the strength to forgive has not yet taken even one step in Christianity. The sign of a cultivated, spiritual person is whether he has the strength to forget. That is what this man revealed. And indeed, if someone...

reads his life and learns of his temptations, of everything this man endured and everything that was done to him—not here in Aegina, but back where his trials began—he will marvel at his forbearance. He was a deeply cultivated man. This is what it means to be a Christian: to resemble Christ. Christ found an excuse even for those who crucified Him.

There was once a Christian father whose wife slapped him in front of their children—and you understand what that means, do you not? The children rose up, ready to tear their mother apart, but the father stepped between them and said, “No, children. Your mother is right, but I cannot tell you why just now.” The mother was not right, and yet he said, “Your mother is right, but I cannot tell you why just now.”

And the children were disarmed. We, of course, would have wanted to tear her eyes out. I am simply telling you these things because many people are perplexed. What is it about this saint? How did he become so great? How was he given a blank check, so to speak? Saint Nektarios does not have only one specialty. He is not like Saint Paraskevi, who is especially invoked for ailments of the eyes. He is not like Saint Artemios, who is especially invoked for ailments of the reproductive organs. He is not like Saint Xenia, who is especially invoked for dandruff and hair loss. He is not like Saint Barbara, who is especially invoked for leprosy, and so forth. His work is not confined to one branch. Whatever the problem, Saint Nektarios is an entire hospital. Whether your concerns are personal, institutional, financial, administrative, or anything else the nous—the spiritual intellect—can imagine, nothing lies outside his jurisdiction. Christ has given him a blank check.

He once signed a blank paper for that suffering mother who had a demon-possessed daughter. At Thermopylae he told her, “Let whatever you wish be done. Give me a sheet of paper to sign, and write whatever you want on it: that Panos may recover, that he may make a good marriage—whatever you want to happen.” That is exactly what Saint Nektarios is like. Unfortunately, you too will have heard recently how many things have been said against Saint Nektarios and how many books have been written against him. But if it were revealed what befell all those who remained unrepentant after making accusations against Saint Nektarios, people would be terrified. For you know that God is just. At times He may permit...

the holy people who follow Him to be attacked, for their own good, because it benefits them spiritually. It is impossible for someone to want to be a Christian and never be accused. A Christian will be accused. This is proof of his Christianity. This is proof of holiness. Perhaps this, too, unsettles you. But I have something before me that I would like to read to you. You will have heard of a nun from a monastery in Kozani, a woman who is like a riddle no one can solve, and who writes harsh things against Saint Nektarios.

This woman was recently excommunicated by our Church. I was saddened when I heard of the excommunication and when I read its text—not because she was excommunicated, but because of the way it was done. She was excommunicated in a manner suited to another age, not to this one. How different that excommunication could have been, so as to help both her and the people around her who remain deceived to this day. Listen, then, to a detail you probably have not heard. I do not know whether you are familiar with the story of a saint whom, before long, we too shall venerate—another man from Aegina, a certain Father Ieronymos. He lived in Aegina and reposed a few years ago.

Father Ieronymos was a one-armed priest who served at the hospital in Athens, a man filled with grace and spiritual gifts. You could go to him, and without your telling him about your troubles, he could tell you what was troubling you and what you needed to do. Many people who knew him found consolation in him. I had the blessing of knowing this man personally and of being with him during the final days before his death. Many years ago, in 1965, he received a visit from a young woman from Lamia—Antonia, forgive me, from Larissa. During their conversation, because she had visited the Holy Land and had also passed through Cairo...

the elder had occasion to respond and say certain things about Saint Nektarios. The saint had been his neighbor, with the monastery farther up the hill, and his trials had begun in Cairo, where he had served as Bishop of Pentapolis in the Patriarchate of Alexandria. It was there that he was first consecrated and began his ministry. It was there that he was slandered; there, there, all these things happened. Listen, then, to what this elder said in 1965 about Saint Nektarios, and specifically about the case of this nun who has now written against him. “Since you mentioned Cairo, I have something to reveal to you about Saint Nektarios, who was there,” the elder said to the young woman.

“Bishop of Pentapolis. I want you to remember what I am about to tell you, because you will need it later. I will no longer be alive. A nun with a great deal of money will be led astray and will write books against Saint Nektarios. I tell you truthfully, my daughter: Nektarios is a Saint. Many people will be deeply shaken by what she writes. When that nun writes those books, be careful to remember my words. I will tell you from the beginning what happened in Egypt.” He spoke in the Cretan dialect. “And so now,” she says, “he told her what had happened in Egypt. I was very young when the Saint was the hierarch—that is, the Bishop of Pentapolis. He was an experienced spiritual father, filled with zeal, and a man of holy life and virtue. Many people flocked to the Saint, especially women and those who were suffering deeply.”

Other clergy and monks there in Alexandria, in Cairo, and at the Patriarchate saw that the Saint had many followers—that is, many spiritual children—and became so envious of him that they went to Sophronios, the Patriarch of Alexandria, and accused Nektarios of being a fornicator, a heretic, and many other things. The Patriarch, unaware that this was all driven by jealousy, believed them. Without calling the Saint in to question him or investigate the accusations, he removed him as Bishop of Pentapolis and relieved him of his duties in the offices of the Patriarchate. He also sent him a letter of dismissal and compelled him to leave Alexandria and go wherever he wished. ‘To make a long story short,’ the elder continues, ‘you know this part: the Saint left and came to Greece.’

...but he had sent letters to the churches of the Patriarchate containing accusations against the Saint. A document had even been sent from Egypt to the Ministry of Education, claiming that he had left for reasons of immorality, among other things. The Saint forgave them—keep in mind what I was telling you—the Saint forgave them, but he suffered and endured great hardship. Yet listen, my daughter, to what happened afterward, which they did not reveal. As soon as the Saint departed under this great trial and sorrow and came to Greece, all the envious clergy who had accused him became possessed by demons. They fell to the ground and confessed their slander and all the unjust accusations they had made against the Saint.

When the Patriarch saw the miracle, he realized that the clergy had deceived him. He sent a letter asking Nektarios Kephalas to return to his position. But the blessed Patriarch should also have written about the miracle that had taken place. He wrote nothing about any of this. And wherever he had sent letters containing the accusations, he should have sent new letters retracting them, setting the matter right, and reporting the miracle as well—to the Ministry of Education, the Patriarchate, the Church, and so forth.

So he also wrote to the Church of Greece, asking that the Saint return. But he did not retract what he had written before—that is, the accusations. He should have said, “Send the accusations back to me, because this is how matters truly stand. Here we have the others down there, crawling on their chests and possessed by demons.” The Saint did not return. He knew all about these things. So, my daughter, the nun will take those old accusations and slanders as her basis.

“She will write books against the Saint about those things,” he says—books. And indeed, she did write books, a book—books against the Saint—after first being led astray herself. Remember all this, and let nothing shake your faith in the holiness of Saint Nektarios of Aegina. Then the Saint came here, to Aegina, to the monastery where he reposed. Here God—God glorified him. I too came to Aegina, so that I might leave my remains near the Saint, where he lived for about twenty years, I believe. And these things were written many years ago and spoken long be—

These things were fulfilled in the person of the Saint. What I mentioned earlier did not come to light—why they retracted their accusations and what happened there. For when people accuse God’s servants before Him, God may allow His servants to be accused, but He will repay their accusers in kind. I do not know whether you have been influenced by these accusations. This is not a matter of politics or self-interest. It is something we must take seriously. If this Saint had been a heretic, as they claimed at the time, or immoral, and so forth, the Spirit of God could not have dwelt upon him. The Spirit dwells only in those who are pure. Indeed, even today the Saint is accused by Satan.

He also has the power and grace to drive out unclean spirits. And Satan says, “We already had the monk, and now the Bishop has come upon us as well.” By “the monk,” he means Saint Gerasimos. “Now the Bishop has come upon us too.” And so I say that, in our own day, this person has moved everyone profoundly. He is always there as a clear sign that we can point out, easily and at little expense, to people who do not believe or who ask us to prove these things to them. Do you want to see that there is something beyond the grave? Do you want to see it? Go to Aegina, and there you will see many things, provided there is humility. When there is humility, all things become possible. In his day,

There was a gendarme in Aegina who knew the monastery. He was transferred away for many years, and after a long time he returned. In the meantime, the Saint had reposed. When the gendarme returned, he met the Saint at the harbor. The Saint said to him, “How are you? Welcome back.” The gendarme said, “How are you, Your Eminence?” The Saint asked, “How have you been? Why did it take you so long to return?” “I have just been transferred back here,” he replied. They spoke for a few minutes and then parted. The gendarme went to the café and said to his acquaintances there, “That priest is still here! He is still young; he never grows old.” “Who do you mean?” they asked. “Nektarios,” he replied. “Which Nektarios?”

“What do you mean? I was just talking with him at the harbor.” “Hasn’t he died?” Then they showed him photographs of Saint Nektarios—the kind people even kept in their cars in those days, since they generally regarded him as their protector—and other icons that had been circulated. He was left speechless. The miracles Saint Nektarios has worked number many thousands. More than twenty thousand accounts of miracles must have passed through my own hands. I have gone through thirteen thousand miracles; I have published some three thousand in the magazine Agia Marina, which I produce; and his book has been reissued eight times, each edition containing two hundred, one hundred and fifty, or three hundred miracles. Add up how many thousands of miracles have passed through my hands, and then consider how many are recorded at Saint Nektarios’s monastery on Aegina.

They are recorded in Kamariza, in Pachiana, and throughout the whole world. How many miracles the Saint has worked—truly extraordinary miracles! Just a few days ago, here in Athens, he healed a doctor through his Holy Relics, I believe at the Red Cross Hospital. I published the account in the October issue. The man had a tumor the size of a whole orange, and the Saint delivered him from the surgeons’ hands. Twice they tried to operate on him, and twice the procedure had to be stopped because of bleeding. Then the man got up, and nothing was found. And although he was himself a doctor, he had the courage to put it in writing. I published his account. Ask for the October issue of Saint Marina, and you will find the complete written testimony describing exactly what he had.

as he himself had worded it. I did not shorten it at all. This has something to teach us today, but we do not appreciate it as we should—not merely because of our own needs, though it would certainly be to our benefit in those needs. For I do not know whether you remember Caesar’s reply. Do you remember what he said to Pilate when Pilate wrote to him, reporting what had happened here?

He says: “Why did you allow them to crucify this man?” “They said that He claimed to be God.” “Well, was He not God? You did not want Him as your God? At least you could have kept Him as a physician, since He healed every disease.” What answer did Caesar give Pilate? “Come up here,” he told him, “and I will show you.” And Pilate received his due punishment. At least you could have kept Him as a physician, since He healed every disease and even raised the dead.

I want you to know that Saint Nektarios is one of the many saints of our Orthodox faith. Saint Nektarios is not the only one whose relics, tomb, and shrine we have. Do you know that we have five saints in the Ionian Islands? Nearby, in Corfu, there are Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora Augusta. Then there is Saint Gerasimos, whom they accuse Prokopios of having cut apart—but they are lying. The saint’s body is whole; nothing is missing. I have spoken about this before, and you know it. There is Saint Gerasimos in Kefalonia, and Saint Dionysios in Zakynthos, together with Saint Joseph.

There are two relics in Zakynthos, not just one. In the village of Gaitani, where we go to venerate Saint Mavra, there is an entire relic on the right. It belongs to Saint Joseph, an Archimandrite from Crete. So there are five relics there altogether. As for the lies and deceptions surrounding the case of Saint Gerasimos, I will read to you from their own writings, so that you may see how far betrayal can go in matters of religion, and so that you will not believe everything that is written and presented.

I will read to you from their own writings. I do not know whether you are aware of the expert medical report prepared by the doctors who went and examined the relic. Nor do I know whether you saw—at least on the stage—Kollatos’s play, which he wrote and produced about the Prevezis affair. In it, he also presented the affair concerning Saint Gerasimos—or rather, Prokopios—as a case against Prokopios. All this happened recently. I was away, but I read about it in the newspapers. As you know, the trial against Kollatos has also recently taken place. This play by Kollatos was staged only lately, after the doctors’ expert examination. I mention it to show you the malice at work and what is happening around the Orthodox Church, the saints, and the clergy. Listen to what it says.

Two more scenes from the play. Prokopios, the Metropolitan of Kefallinia, appears together with nuns from the Holy Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, and they begin hawking the saint’s holy body for sale. You are staging a scene in a theater; this is theater you are performing here—see if you can find something decent to put on.

“The toes of the left foot—500,000 drachmas,” they shouted, “are for sale. Twelve ribs from the left side at 50,000 drachmas each—that comes to 600,000 drachmas. Twelve ribs from the right side at 60,000 drachmas each—that comes to 720,000 drachmas.” They shouted like vendors in a marketplace. Then, as the lights went out, the Metropolitan of Cephalonia took up an axe and brandished it, preparing to cut, like a butcher readying his cleaver; and in the darkness, a heavy thud was heard—

of the axe striking as Saint Gerasimos’s holy remains were being dismembered. Just listen—as if cutting him up were not enough! These things came afterward. Now, all this took place in court, and the newspaper Akropolis reported it on October 11. Anyone who wishes can obtain the issue and find there what I am reading to you. In the meantime, an official medical examination had been carried out. Three doctors had gone. The head of the team, its chairman, was Georgios Avlamis; the second was Athanasios Mychas; and the third was Ioannis Antonatos. Three in all. Indeed, it is said of Avlamis, the chairman of the team, that while they were examining the remains, searching for the pieces—the ribs, the thighs, and the foreparts supposedly cut from the Saint and sold by Prokopios—

He felt for the pulse, and Saint Gerasimos’s pulse was beating. This was never written down. It reached my ears, and I am passing it on to you. And for twenty days afterward, the man was not at all well. Now listen to the findings of this commission of physicians concerning the Saint’s relic, which this man claims was cut into pieces and sold for fifty thousand drachmas, sixty thousand drachmas, and so on. Listen. In their report, these doctors record the following findings: In the left submandibular region, there is a loss of soft tissue, so that the bone of the lower jaw is visible. This, however, is due to deterioration caused by the passage of time. Nothing.

Second, the little finger of the right hand is missing from its base. It is indeed missing, but for a hundred years it has been kept in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Kefallinia, in Argostoli, as a blessing. So there is nothing suspicious here either. Third, both feet have areas missing from the soles—that is, from the underside on which we walk. They look as though they have been worn away underneath, but this was caused by the passage of time. Science itself says so. It happened over time; these parts were not recently stolen, cut off, and sold. So far, then, there is nothing—only lies. Fourth, the big toe of the left foot is entirely missing.

The big toe of the left foot: since when has it been missing? There is no sign of a new cut that would allow them to say it was recently severed. You can tell the difference between a four-hundred-year-old relic and an intervention made now, or even a year ago. It shows. But they say nothing about that. No one knows what happened. Perhaps it occurred when they first removed the Saint from the grave. I myself once happened to be present in a similar case, when we exhumed a body after three years. What happened? You see, the hands were positioned like this. The decayed material carried away this bone with it, and that bone is now missing from the relic. The same happened with the foot: as the decayed material was removed, it carried away one of the toes—the big toe—

which is now missing from the relic. If an examination were performed on that relic two or three hundred years from now, people would say, “Someone stole it.” Yet it has been missing ever since the day of the exhumation. Consequently, this point proves nothing either. They do not say that the toe is missing because of a recent severing, or that it bears signs of having just been cut off. Nothing of the sort. Further down, on the outer side of the right leg, near its outer edge, there is an area where the skin is missing—as we might say, it has been skinned. The missing strip of skin is ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide, and microscopic examination describes it as having been removed relatively recently

in comparison with the relic as a whole, which is four hundred years old. In other words, if it was removed after two hundred years, there would be a difference. If after one hundred years, there would be a difference; and if after three hundred years, there would still be a difference. So this does not prove that the strip of skin was removed last year or this year, during Prokopios’s time. Listen to how they conclude that it was “recent”—these are their own words, not mine. The impression that it was removed relatively recently comes from comparing it with a similar nearby area of damage that is clearly much older. That is the sole basis of their conclusion. There are no missing ribs, limbs, or anything else—neither on the left nor on the right. So where are all those ribs, ladies, that you keep harping on about? You are mocking all that is sacred and holy.

Where is the evidence? The report then draws its conclusion and says: “In his written defense, Prokopios addresses the relatively recent removal of the piece measuring ten centimeters”—because that is what the whole matter concerns, this missing strip of skin, this ten-centimeter area that has been skinned. They do not even attempt to deal with the other claims and say that he sold those parts. Are they missing? Where are they? There is no evidence anywhere. Concerning the relatively recent removal of the piece ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide, the report says that the comparison was made with another piece that had been removed four hundred years earlier. That is why they see this one as later: this skin was removed later than the other piece. Therefore, the removal of the newer piece would naturally appear recent.

And he states, “It was removed a hundred years ago.” Thank you—that settles it. “Yet,” the Metropolitan argues, “I have served as bishop in Kefallinia for only fourteen years.” Do you hear that? What does the public think? That the Saint was cut into pieces and sold, and that others made fortunes from him. Why tell me such things? They are lies. That is precisely why you must not believe everything you hear about these matters. I do not want to speak to you about the other affair involving Prevezis. You would rub your eyes in disbelief if you saw what is being done against Orthodoxy. It is attacked because it is the one true faith, the one true religion, and it strikes at the interests of the devil. They would remove it from the world if they could. The love of Christians grows cold; they stop going to Church, they no longer turn to the clergy, and they no longer make use of the Mysteries. And at the same time, as you see...

There are accusers of the clergy. Those tongues will appear very different in the end. If you go to Sinai—if God counts you worthy to go—and they take you to the cemetery, enter it and ask, “Where are the skulls and relics of the Patriarchs?” There, inside the wall, you will find thirteen boxes. They contain the thirteen skulls of Patriarchs who were exiled there. Beside them is another skull that does not face outward toward the people but has been turned inward. We do not know whose it is; they do not say. Yet the tongue remains incorrupt, because this man used to accuse the clergy. He was a man who spoke against the clergy. It was plain that his tongue had not decayed. His tongue remains incorrupt.

If you should see it for yourselves when you go to Mount Sinai, remember this detail I have told you. See what answer is given in that case. There is one incident involving Saint Nektarios which, if a person could experience it, would make him say, “My God, are there really people with such spiritual power even today?” The accusations against the Saint were so serious that the police came, the public prosecutor came—everyone came. They found him sitting in an office and began abusing him as though he were some common delinquent. They demanded that he produce the illegitimate children he had supposedly fathered with the nuns and thrown into the well, and so on. He sat quietly in a corner, as Nektaria told us—the last and youngest of the sisters, who fell asleep in the Lord two or three years ago—and he did not respond at all.

Throughout that whole absurd accusation, as they barged in and said all these things to him, he did not speak a word. In that room there was an icon of our Christ, like the one we see here, with His hands bound. At one point, the Saint turned and looked at Christ. He said nothing. What he said inwardly to Christ, I do not know. All I know is this: they immediately left, beginning with the public prosecutor, then the police commander who was there, the head of the gendarmerie, and all the others. But first they made a prostration before him, asked his forgiveness, kissed his hand, and departed. Do you understand? The youngest sister, who had been watching through a small opening, then went into the room. He was still sitting there after they had all gone. She entered, knelt before him, and said, “My Master,”

“did you say anything to them?” He replied, “My child, He did not speak when they accused Him. How, then, could I speak? I was not supposed to speak. This is His concern, not mine. My concern is simply not to do the things of which they accuse me. Everything else is His concern.” That was his answer. Yet people are made to hate the Saint. When the Saint’s canonization was proclaimed and the bells were rung here, a woman in Koukaki asked, “Why are the bells ringing?” Someone replied, “Have you not heard? Today they proclaimed Nektarios a Saint.” And she said, “As though all the other saints were not enough, they have gone and made us a new one!” As though the Church makes someone a saint! Whom does the Church make a saint? The Church simply reminds Christians that this person is a Saint: “Pay attention to him and seek his help for your good.” For if he did not work miracles, how could he be a Saint?

If he had not streamed myrrh, how could he be a Saint? All this evidence shows that he is a Saint. The Church simply declares—after many years, in fact—that this man is a Saint. And you do not yet know the full extent of the Saint’s patient endurance.

This woman had suffered for years from eczema. One of her neighbors had gone to the feast in Aegina, where the canonization was to be celebrated, and had brought back some water from the Agiasmos, the blessing of water. When she returned, they asked her, “Where have you been?” She told them what had happened. The woman replied, “Why go there to see such things? What is the point?” Her neighbor said, “I brought this back,” and gave her some of the blessed water. And that sharp-tongued woman said, “They made him a saint themselves.” Yet the Saint healed her. He did not hold her words against her—whereas we would have wanted to tear her eyes out.

He did not hold it against her; he even healed her. What does it mean to “overcome evil with good”? This is how saints are made. But our ego is bound up with our very flesh; we guard it, and it hurts. That is precisely why we do not cast off the ego. We want revenge, we want to answer back, and we want repayment. Do you understand? And that is how we harm ourselves: our ego compels us to defend ourselves. As I said concerning these relics, there are also Saint John the Russian, Saint Patapios, Saint Sabbas the Sanctified at his monastery, Saint Sabbas in Kalymnos, Saint Theodore in Mytilene, the many Holy Relics in Constantinople, and Myrtidiotissa, the nun in Stenousa, about whom I hope to speak soon. The Saint’s body also remained incorrupt for several years, and there is a beautiful account of it. Later, however, the Lord permitted it to dissolve. The Saint himself had asked for this.

We know by revelation that he himself asked for his relic not to remain whole, but to be divided into small pieces so that its blessing might go to many places—for that is the purpose. The body of the divine Chrysostom also remained whole until it was brought back from Cucusus. When they brought him in and placed him upon his throne, and he said, “Peace,” the throne and the tomb of Eudoxia ceased trembling. From that time onward, the body of the divine Chrysostom dissolved. Until then it had remained whole. There is also an account by a physician of that time, a man named Xideas, describing how he saw the Saint’s body whole and incorrupt years later. If time permits, I shall read it to you.

Now I shall read to you about this newly revealed relic and explain the matter. Mr. Xideas testifies that he himself saw the Saint’s body intact, something that astonished him both as a man and as a scientist. “One afternoon in October 1932,” he says—the Saint fell asleep in the Lord in 1920, so this was twelve years later—“I was returning from the village of Mesagros, where I had gone on an animal to see a sick person. When I reached the area near the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, torrential rain began to fall. At that time there were neither roads nor cars on the island, and we traveled on animals. I stopped beneath a tree and waited for the weather to improve, but the rain continued. Meanwhile, darkness began to fall. I then thought of taking shelter in the monastery and spending the night there. The nuns, whom I knew, welcomed me with their customary hospitality.

“They offered me food and prepared a cell where I could sleep. Before lying down, however, I considered it my duty to venerate the Saint’s tomb. Accompanied by one of the sisters, who carried a lantern because of the darkness, I went to the tomb and expressed my wish to see inside. At that moment, acting spontaneously, without considering the monastery’s rules and despite the protests of the sister accompanying me, I pulled the marble slab of the tomb with all my strength. It slid aside until the tomb was half open. I was led to do this not only by human curiosity about the things being reported, but also by scientific interest. What I had heard appeared entirely contrary to what I had been taught at the university. Therefore, fully conscious of what I am saying, both as a man and as a scientist, I assure you that I found myself...”

“before an astonishing sight. I beheld the Saint, whom I had known in the past, and his body was intact. Although so many years had passed since he fell asleep in the Lord, his face had suffered no alteration, and he still had a sparse beard. My curiosity led me to examine him closely for a full fifteen minutes. From this examination, I established that the body gave off no foul odor, showed no rigor mortis, and that I could not pull any hairs from his beard. When I touched the body, there was no subcutaneous fat; only the skin remained. I should note that when I was first told that the body had been found intact, I attributed it to particular geological conditions, as we scientists are taught to say. But now, after so many years...”

“for it still to be in this condition is something science cannot explain. Do not imagine,” Mr. Xideas adds, “that I am superstitiously religious or a man carried away by fantasies. Everything I have related to you is true down to the smallest detail. I repeat once again that I have absolutely no connection with religious superstition. The following day, I went down to the town of Aegina and proceeded directly to Sarchas, where I reported everything I had seen.” This is what that scientist wrote at the time, as I have told you.

Concerning the new relic that is being added to the many relics of our Orthodoxy, I shall read a letter from the abbot of the Monastery of Chozeba in the Jordanian desert. By God’s providence, this letter came into my hands in Canada, in Montreal, when I was there recently, and I was given an opportunity to speak about it. You know, Protestantism is very widespread there, and our own people are shaken by such matters. They accept none of these things—neither saints nor relics nor anything else. Yet for us these are among our strongest testimonies, proving that we possess a living faith. We can point to evidence and demonstrate it, whereas they have nothing. I have kept the letter with me ever since. It is dated August 28, 1980—at the end of August, near the beginning of September.

“Venerable Ancient Lavra of Saint George of Chozeba, beside the deepest wilderness of the Jordan, August 28.” The abbot writes to a person who had sent money from America, and he now relates the news: “Our news here is as follows. Twenty-six years ago, an elder who was a hermit, a hieromonk, and a spiritual father fell asleep in the Lord at one of our monastery’s hermitages, outside in the ravine. Those who have visited know that this is the ravine from which the Prophet Elijah drank water when he was there. The hermitage is about half an hour away on foot, in a steep and inaccessible cave. He fell asleep twenty-six years ago, and we buried him at the hermitage. One month ago...”

Some Greeks came to our monastery, many of whom had known the elder and had gone to him for confession. They asked us to take them to venerate the grave of the elder, who was a hermit and spiritual father. We went down into the ravine, reached the cave, climbed up with ladders and ropes, and all venerated his grave. Then, through their persistent entreaties, they persuaded me to open the grave so that we might venerate his relics. We agreed and opened the grave—and what did we see? We beheld a great miracle. The elder hermit’s relic was whole and entire, with his beard, his hair, his cassock, his monastic schema, his priestly stole, and his shoes. His body was perspiring and seemed alive.

After twenty-six years in the grave, he was as though we had placed him there that very moment. We were overcome with awe and emotion. We venerated him, paid our respects, and departed. Five or six days later, all the fathers returned with a temporary coffin—a makeshift casket, that is—and brought him to the monastery. Forgive me, I mean a temporary coffin. We lowered him from the hermitage with ropes and brought him to the monastery. We now have him in the church, inside that temporary coffin. Great crowds came to venerate him, as did the entire Patriarchate, and we also held an all-night vigil. We went to Jerusalem to commission a proper reliquary for him. The carpenter asked us for seventy thousand drachmas. When we have raised the money...

...we shall have the glass reliquary made. It must be done, because if he remains exposed, people will steal parts of his relics. He has also worked two miracles. Photographs were taken of him, and when they are sent to us, we shall send some to you. All his teeth, his eyebrows, and his eyelashes remain without the slightest change. As for the body... In another letter I shall send you whatever else you ask me for. Abbot of the Holy Lavra of Chozeba, Hermitage of the Fathers, Archimandrite Amphilochios.” He is here now. In fact, I heard—though I have only spoken with him by telephone and have not seen him—that he is in Crete and will come tomorrow, or sometime soon; I do not know exactly when. I spoke with him by telephone because his name was written here, and I asked him about what had happened there. We took action so that the money could be sent and the reliquary made. I also asked him the elder’s name, and he told me that it was John.

They knew, because they themselves had buried him. And so another incorrupt relic is added to the others. This is proof that God lives, Orthodoxy lives, and the Saints live. I have not told you all this without reason; I simply took the opportunity to speak more generally about the Saints, so that we may understand that this is both a weapon and, as it were, Christ’s side into which we can readily put our finger, enabling us to see that ours is the true faith. Then we will not listen to the fables of this person or that, of Buddhism, of Mohammedanism, or of any other belief. God’s truth is demonstrated by our Holy Relics, the relics of those who are God’s friends, of whom Christ said: “But greatly honored by me are Thy friends, O God.” And truly, they are our helpers. Those whose icons we keep in our homes and those whom we carry in our hearts help us in every matter. Therefore, I pray that the Saint of this day, our patron Saint...

...is always a Saint. He is not a Saint only on the day when his feast is celebrated; he is always a Saint.

διατυπώσει ο ίδιος. Δεν το περιέκοψα καθόλου. Είναι κάτι για εμάς σήμερα αυτό, αλλά δεν το εκτιμούμε όσο πρέπει. Όχι απλώς για τας ανάγκας μας, που θα είναι συμφέρον τουλάχιστον για τας ανάγκας μας. Γιατί δεν ξέρω αν θυμείστε τι απήντησε ο Καίσαρ. Τι είπε στον Πιλάτο, θυμόσαστε, όταν ο Πιλάτος έγραψε ότι έτσι έγινε εδώ;

«τους είπες τίποτα;». «Μα, παιδί μου, Αυτός δε μιλούσε όταν Τον κατηγορούσαν. Πώς εγώ θα μιλήσω; Δεν έπρεπε να μιλήσω. Είναι δική Του δουλειά, δεν είναι δική μου δουλειά. Δικιά μου δουλειά είναι να μην κάνω αυτά που λένε αυτοί. Τα άλλα είναι Εκείνου δουλειά». Αυτή ήταν η απάντηση. Αλλά μας κάνει μίσος τον Άγιο, όπως έλεγε μια στο Κουκάκι, όταν έγινε η ανακήρυξη του Αγίου, έγιναν κωδωνοκρουσίες, όταν πληροφορήστηκαν εδώ. «Τι», λέει, «γιατί χτυπάνε οι καμπάνες;». «Άμα δεν ξέρεις», λέει, «σήμερα κάμανε τον Άγιο Νεκτάριο». «Δεν μας έφταναν τόσοι άλλοι», λέει, «φτιάξανε», λέει, «και καινούριον». Λες και τον φτιάχνει η Εκκλησία τον Άγιο. Ποιον φτιάχνει η Εκκλησία Άγιο; Η Εκκλησία υπενθυμίζει στους Χριστιανούς ότι αυτός είναι Άγιος. Προσέξτε τον, χρησιμοποιήστε τον για το καλό σας, διότι, αν δεν θαυματουργούσε, πώς θα ήταν Άγιος;
