Summary
The lecture presents the Theotokos as a biblical figure first foretold in Genesis, whose offspring would defeat the serpent. The Nicene Creed is used to clarify that calling Mary Theotokos does not imply that Christ’s divine nature originated from her, since the Son is eternally begotten of the Father. The lecture begins defending Mary’s perpetual virginity by explaining Joseph as her guardian and rejecting claims based on the words wife, until, and firstborn that she later bore other children.

Dear listeners in Christ, I would ask your loving permission to speak about a subject that concerns many people today: the person of the Theotokos.
One might say that the person of the Theotokos has become a sign spoken against, just as our Lord was. For this very reason, I would like to offer a few words of illumination—not with passion, but with great love—both for those who love, esteem, venerate, and honor her, and for those who reject her.
Perhaps these words may shed a little light, so that some balance may be found in this matter. I think you know that the Theotokos is a biblical person, just as our Lord Jesus Christ is, just as the Holy Spirit is, just as the Honorable Forerunner is, and just as the Precious Cross is. These persons, and the symbol of the Precious Cross, were already present beforehand in sacred history. God speaks first about her, and then about Jesus, her offspring. If we open Genesis, chapter 3, verse 15, we find there the words of God addressed to Satan.
There, for the first time, He speaks about the Theotokos. He says, as you also read in your Scriptures: “And I will put enmity between you”—that is, Satan—“and the woman,” clearly the Theotokos, “and between your offspring and her offspring,” meaning Jesus. “He”—Jesus—“shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel.” The Old Testament also prophesies about her and, in very many places, portrays and prefigures her as a type. Yet despite the exceedingly clear teaching of Holy Scripture concerning the Theotokos,
many dispute the honor due to her person. First, they maintain that she should not be called Theotokos. Second, they claim that after giving birth to the Savior, she supposedly bore other sons by Joseph. These claims are not truths drawn from Scripture or from Holy Tradition—which, of course, they also reject—nor are they supposedly edifying teachings. I do not know by what spirit these people are driven to portray the all-pure Mother of the Word as having no exceptional
worth and as deserving no special honor, because she is supposedly no different from any other woman. Yet for the protection of those who are willing to listen—our own Orthodox faithful, as we might say—our duty, born of love for our neighbor and of our boundless reverence for the Theotokos, our Mother, commands us to strike these claims down with the word and, in some measure, dispel all these arguments and teachings, which in the final analysis are blasphemies. If we wished to look back and discover where our Most Holy Theotokos first appears...
we would have to find her, as we heard, in the first book of the Old Testament, specifically in Genesis 3:15. There we see her as the woman whose offspring will crush the serpent’s head. If we wished to follow her chronologically, we could next find her in the same book of Genesis, chapter 28, verses 12–13, where she is presented as Jacob’s ladder, by which God descended. We could then find her as the bush that burned without being consumed, in Exodus 3:1–4. Just as the bush received the fire and was not consumed, so the Theotokos received the fire of the Godhead and was not consumed. We could also find her as the jar that bore the manna. We find this in Exodus, chapter 16, verse 33, and Christ Himself invokes this image in John, chapter 6, verses 49–58. There, an earthen jar bore the heavenly manna; here, an earthly human being, another jar, likewise bore the heavenly manna, as Christ said.
We could find her in Aaron’s rod that budded, a type of our Most Holy Theotokos. Just as a dry rod there produced leaves and perhaps fruit, so here a Virgin gives birth. We find this in Numbers 17:1–10. In Judges she is spoken of as the dew-covered fleece foreseen by Gideon, in chapter 6, verse 36. Isaiah also beholds and presents her to us as the Virgin who will bear Emmanuel in her womb, in Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son,” and the rest, which you also know from the Gospel according to Matthew that we hear during the days of Christmas. Isaiah also sees her as a light cloud carrying Him who is above Godhead into Egypt. In other words, he sees her flight into Egypt as she carries our Christ in her arms. This is found in Isaiah 19:1. David, in Psalm 44, verse 9, sees her as the Queen at the right hand of the Lord. Isaiah, in chapter 6, verse 6, sees her as the mystical tongs,
by which he received the coal—the coal is our Lord Jesus Christ—and his lips were cleansed. In Hebrews 9:1–5, Paul presents her as the Ark of the Covenant. In those same verses we also find her as the Tabernacle of Testimony. In Ezekiel 44:1–3, we find her as the closed gate. God passed through it and came forth, and it remained closed—a type of the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos. These are not the only types, for we are not exhausting the subject; we are simply presenting sincere seekers with passages that prefigure the Theotokos. Yet many who pretend that they cannot understand the title “Theotokos” persist very strongly. They claim that the title supposedly implies that Christ, as God, is not eternal, and therefore that we Orthodox supposedly show irreverence toward God our Savior by calling His mother Theotokos. But Greeks, at least, whatever group they may have joined today, know—or certainly ought to know—that we Orthodox
proclaim in our Creed, as they themselves once proclaimed together with us, that we believe “in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages.” Why, then, do they accuse us, when in our Creed we declare so solemnly that Christ is from the Father before all ages? Why do they accuse us when we call His mother Theotokos? Therefore, whatever they appear to insinuate against us—that Christ our God is not eternal—is false.
The Holy Spirit, speaking through Isaiah in chapter 7, verse 14, said—and the angel recalled it, as we mentioned before, while the Evangelist Matthew repeated it—“Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” which means, “God with us.” Do we not see clearly in this passage of Holy Scripture that the Virgin would give birth, as indeed she did, to God with us—to Emmanuel, that is, to God incarnate? In the religious language of Christians, what else should the woman who gave birth to God be called? Should she not be called Theotokos? But let us proceed to the direct naming of the Theotokos by the Holy Spirit.
Consider, for example, the Theotokos at her visit to Elizabeth. What do we read there? “And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb.” It continues: “And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she cried out with a loud voice and said: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’” See how the Holy Spirit, through Elizabeth, calls Mary the mother of her Lord—her Lord, meaning her God. And you ask: who else is this Lord?
God. Do we not read in the Prophets, “Thus says the Lord,” and, “The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah”? Therefore, Elizabeth’s phrase “the mother of my Lord” means, I believe, “the mother of my God.” And since the Virgin is the mother of God, she is Theotokos. Whoever denies this title, whether foreign or local, unknowingly fights against the Holy Spirit, by whose illumination other passages of the New Testament were also written. For example, in Luke 1:35 we read: “The power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son
of God.” And I ask you: since the One to be born is the Son of God, what should the woman who gave birth to the Son of God be called? Should she not be called Theotokos? Second, in Romans 1:3 we read: “Concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the Resurrection from the dead.” But if the One born of the seed of David is the Son of God and God blessed forever, what should the woman who bore the blessed Son of God be called? Should she not be called Theotokos? Here is another passage. What does Romans 9:5 say?
“Of whom are the fathers, and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed forever.” What should the woman who bore the Son of God, blessed forever, be called? Theotokos, of course. Again, Galatians 4:4 says: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law,” and so forth. If the One sent by God to be born of a woman is His Son, what should the woman who bore His Son—that is, the Son of God—be called?
She must be called Theotokos. Moreover, beloved, the title Theotokos expresses another great teaching. Through this title, briefly yet richly, even the simplest Christian confesses the great teaching of the Incarnation: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” How did He become flesh? Who gave flesh to the Word, as we read in John 1:14? By calling the Virgin Mary Theotokos, we say and do nothing other than confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
“Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God; and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist.” Is this not found in our Scripture, in 1 John 4:2–3? How, then, could we Orthodox fail to use the word Theotokos, which so wonderfully expresses both the letter and the spirit of Holy Scripture and proclaims the great Mystery of godliness—“God was manifested in the flesh”—that is, the Incarnation of the Lord?
As you will have heard, when such questions are raised, various opponents and certain self-appointed fellow travelers, unlearned in these matters, change their ground and, clothing themselves as it were in sheep’s clothing, say: “How can we confess Mary as Theotokos, when the title Theotokos was not in use in the Church from the beginning? The Fathers of the first centuries, they say, do not mention it in their writings, and it was wrongly established in the fifth century by the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus.” This, of course, is insincere, because these people do not accept the Holy Fathers, nor do they accept the Ecumenical Councils.
They do not accept them. How, then, can they call them as witnesses in defense of their case? Their reasoning may sound valid, but what they say is untrue. The facts are entirely the opposite. They appeal, for example, to Basil the Great, Saint Epiphanios, John Chrysostom, and others. More specifically, they say that it is universally known from Church history that all the important Fathers of the Church—but which Church, theirs or ours? Our Church certainly has Fathers—confessed the Theotokos as Theotokos even before the Third Ecumenical Council, which took place in the fifth century.
They claim that for four hundred years after Christ none of these Fathers called Mary Theotokos. That is false; it is not true, for the facts are very different. Let us hear, for example, an ancient, almost apostolic Father: Origen, who lived before the Third Ecumenical Council and flourished around AD 238. He uses the title Theotokos, saying: “He calls the woman who was already betrothed a wife; so too was it said concerning Joseph and the Theotokos.” This is found in his Commentary on Deuteronomy, volume two, page 331. Another Father, Dionysius of Alexandria, writing to Paul of Samosata around AD 250, says: “He who was incarnate of the Holy Virgin and Theotokos Mary.” Another Father, Gregory of Neocaesarea, around AD 275, says: “The Holy Theotokos raised the song of this prophecy,” in his Homily on the Annunciation. Another Father, Methodius, Bishop of Patara, around AD 300, says: “And through the tongs—the Theotokos—the life-giving and ineffable coal, incarnate from her immaculate and all-blameless altar, was offered; and the righteous man, standing there as with tongs, spoke typologically of the Mother of God who ministered God to mankind.”
“O most glorious and sacred Mother of God, I beseech you. What prayer shall we offer, O Virgin Mother and Mother who remained a Virgin, you who have been revealed as higher than all the noble and more honorable than every visible and invisible creature? For through you the Lord God of hosts became God with us. Hail, hail, Mother of God and handmaid!” This is from his homily On Symeon, Saint Anna, and the Holy Theotokos, on pages 406–411 and 417–421. Eusebius also, in his Ecclesiastical History, refutes all those who claim that the Fathers do not speak of the Theotokos.
He says, “The most devout Queen”—clearly meaning Saint Helen—“adorned with a wondrous monument in Bethlehem the place where the Theotokos gave birth.” In other words, Saint Helen built the sacred church in Bethlehem, where the Theotokos gave birth. This is found in the Ecclesiastical History, in the Life of Constantine, chapter 43. So what ecclesiastical history are they speaking of, and which ecclesiastical history are they using? Athanasius the Great, in AD 296, also says: “And the angel himself who appeared confessed that he had been sent by the Master, just as Gabriel was sent to Zacharias and, in the case of Mary the Theotokos, he himself declared it.”
Elsewhere he says: “And afterward, for our sake, having taken flesh from the Virgin Mary the Theotokos, He became man.” And elsewhere: “Therefore, since the flesh came from Mary the Theotokos, He Himself is said to have undergone this other birth and to have come into being through it.” And John leapt with gladness. Let us read Against the Arians, volume one, pages 563, 579, and 583, and volume two, pages 824, 875, and 1271. Let us continue. Cyril of Jerusalem calls the Mother of the Lord Theotokos in his letter to Nestorius, volume one of the conciliar documents, page 436.
Julian the Apostate, around AD 360—that impious apostate—also mentions her as Theotokos while rebuking the Christians who used this title. He says: “Why do you call the mother of the Galilean Theotokos?” And again: “You never cease calling Mary Theotokos.” This is found in Julian, pages 262–276. Would you like another witness? Basil the Great, whom they claim says nothing about this, explicitly refutes all these assertions around AD 370. He says: “Because the ears of those who love Christ cannot bear to hear that the Theotokos ever ceased to be a Virgin, we shall remain silent about those matters, since these testimonies are sufficient.”
Gregory the Theologian says something else that is deeply striking, sternly condemning this blasphemy. He says: “Anyone who does not regard Mary as Theotokos is separated from the Godhead.” We cannot say that Christ is God if we refuse to confess that His mother is Theotokos. And you understand what this means for all those who claim such zeal for Christ while rejecting His mother, the Theotokos. Would you like another witness? Amphilochius of Iconium, around AD 370, says: “Through hearing, the Virgin Mary conceived the living God.” And again: “If anyone thinks himself a Christian, yet rails against the Theotokos, the divinely inspired Virgin, he also rages against sound doctrine.”
This is from Amphilochius, On the Holy Theotokos, pages 38, 41, and 45. The divinely inspired Epiphanius, around AD 380, whom they slander by claiming that he says nothing, writes: “And in these things He is also man, and He shall be known as having been formed without the seed of man from Mary the Theotokos, taking from her flesh worthy of Himself, according to the saying, ‘born of a woman.’” John Chrysostom, whose authority they have tried and continue trying to erase, says: “There is nothing in this life like Mary the Theotokos.” He says that nothing in life can compare with Mary the Theotokos. “O man, pass through the whole creation in your contemplation.”
“See whether anything is equal to or greater than the Holy Virgin Theotokos. Travel across the earth, look over the sea, search the air, examine the heavens with your understanding, call to mind all the invisible powers, and see whether there is any other such wonder in all creation.” This comes from a homily On the Holy Virgin and is found in volume five, page 879. Elsewhere he says: “If, then, they claim that Melchizedek belongs to the heavenly realm or to some other place, let them hear that he too came after Christ, who was incarnate from Mary the Theotokos.” Yes, that is all for today. God willing, and by her grace, we shall say something more on another day. Rejoice in the Lord. My beloved listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord.
In our previous talk, we spoke about the person of the Theotokos, always with the aim of shedding light, because there is great misunderstanding concerning her. You will remember that we examined the testimony of the Holy Fathers: whether, and to what extent, they called our Mary Theotokos before the Third Ecumenical Council, which took place in AD 431. For all the opponents of Orthodoxy claim that the Theotokos should not be called Theotokos,
and that supposedly none of the Fathers ever called her by this title. We brought forward many Fathers: Athanasius the Great, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil the Great, Saint Gregory, the divinely inspired Epiphanius, John Chrysostom, Saint Methodius, Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea, Dionysius of Alexandria, Origen, and many others. They refute this claim and testify that the Theotokos was called Theotokos even before the Third Ecumenical Council. Let us now cite a few more who also called her Theotokos before that Council, confirming the teaching of the Church and the Holy Fathers that she is Theotokos, not merely Christotokos, the bearer of Christ. Saint Proclus, for example, a disciple of John Chrysostom, calls the Virgin both Theotokos and a sacred treasure. He says: “The Holy Theotokos and Virgin Mary has called us together here: the undefiled treasure of Ever-Virginity, the spiritual Paradise of the Second Adam, the workshop in which the two natures”—the human and the divine—“were united, the feast of the saving exchange, the bridal chamber in which the Word (Logos) espoused the flesh, and the living burning bush of human nature.”
“The fire of the divine birth pangs did not consume her: the handmaid and Mother, the Virgin and heaven, the only bridge from God to mankind, the loom of the awesome dispensation, upon which the robe of union was woven ineffably.” This comes from one of his homilies, a praise of the Theotokos, on page 60. Theodoret also says that calling the Virgin Theotokos is an Apostolic Tradition. In a dialogue against Pelagius, he writes: “The ancient heralds of the Orthodox Faith, following the Apostolic Tradition, taught that the Mother of the Lord must be called and confessed as Theotokos.”
Thus, the testimony of these fifteen holy men came first. Then, gentlemen, came the Third Ecumenical Council, held at Ephesus in AD 431, to anathematize Nestorius and his followers, who disputed the title Theotokos for Mary the Ever-Virgin, and to confirm the teaching of those Fathers. Yet despite these decisive answers, we are prepared to set aside this good and noble title for the Virgin—Theotokos—if those who argue against us can truly convince us that the principal source, Holy Scripture itself, forbids the title Theotokos. Then we shall believe them and accept their position.
Furthermore, in trying to justify their war against the title Theotokos, they fall into the most extreme blasphemy, saying that the Virgin did not give birth to God. Their argument is: since she did not bear God, she is not Theotokos; therefore, she did not give birth to God. What, then, did she give birth to? The followers of Nestorius answer: a mere man. Then why do you say that you believe in the divinity of Christ? Take care that you are not, in reality, genuine followers of the anathematized heretic Nestorius rather than true Christians, for you do not believe the truths of the Gospel, which says: “The Word (Logos) became flesh and dwelt among us.” Some people say: “Listen to those Orthodox Christians—they believe
that God was born from a woman.” But I ask: which Orthodox Christians call the Mother of the Lord Theotokos while believing that she gave personal or hypostatic origin to the beginningless Word (Logos) of God? Such an understanding of the title Theotokos is entirely unknown to genuine Orthodoxy. It is unknown. We demonstrate this through our Holy Father Cyril of Jerusalem, who says: “Thus the Holy Fathers confidently called the Holy Virgin Theotokos, not because the nature of the Word (Logos)—that is, His divinity—received the beginning of its existence from the Holy Virgin, but because His holy body, endowed with a rational soul, was born from her; and since the Word (Logos) was united to it according to hypostasis, He is said to have been born according to the flesh.”
What could be clearer than this? What could be more reasonable or more Orthodox? The title Theotokos was given most rightly, for it shows that the One who became incarnate is perfect God and perfect man. Saint John of Damascus expresses this clearly when he says: “The title Theotokos contains the whole Mystery”—that is, the whole mystery of the Incarnation. “For if she who gave birth is Theotokos, then He who was born from her is certainly God, and certainly also man. For how could God, whose existence is before all ages, be born from a woman unless He had become man?” Thus this Holy Father says with perfect clarity: How could God, who exists before all ages, be born from a woman unless He became man? This is precisely what Orthodoxy teaches, and not what those outside the Orthodox Faith claim.
We know, then, that those who distort and slander Holy Scripture and the devout teaching handed down by Christ’s Church through the Holy Fathers show contempt for the Word (Logos) of God and, consequently, for God Himself. But, as you know, the matter concerning the Theotokos does not end here. Our Orthodox Church of Christ devoutly believes, as we have said, that she who, because of her purity and holiness, was counted worthy to be addressed by the angel as full of grace and blessed among women did not become the bride of Joseph, but remained Ever-Virgin.
Unfortunately, the heterodox reject this teaching with their usual stubbornness. The passage on which they chiefly rely is what the angel said to Joseph in a dream: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.” They also rely on the other passage: “Then Joseph, rising from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife, and did not know her until she had borne her firstborn Son.” We read these words in Matthew 1:20 and 25. First, they say that the phrases “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife” and “he took his wife”
clearly mean that Joseph took the Virgin as his spouse. Second, they maintain that the words “he did not know her until she had borne her firstborn Son” imply that he knew her afterward. Third, they claim that the word “firstborn” shows that other children were born afterward, making them second-born. But let us examine each argument separately. First, the phrases “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife” and “he took his wife” should not lead us to think that Joseph took the Theotokos as his spouse. Rather, he took her under his protection, because later, when Herod sought to kill the Child,
the Theotokos would otherwise have been left alone, without Joseph’s protection, and would not easily have been able to protect Him. Furthermore, if our Most Holy Theotokos had appeared pregnant without a man beside her, she would have been regarded as an adulteress and, according to the law, would have had to be stoned. For this very reason, God’s providence appointed Joseph as her protector, so to speak, to shelter her, so that the whole divine dispensation might be fulfilled. It would be rather absurd and even blasphemous, I would say, to conclude that an angel came down from heaven to arrange a marriage, especially in the midst of the supreme and ineffable event of the Savior’s Nativity. But the opponents of Orthodoxy do not pay attention to the fact that
even before the angel appeared, Holy Scripture called Joseph her husband in these words: “Then Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to make her a public example.” This is Matthew 1:19. Although he was still only betrothed to her, Scripture calls him her husband, for the immediately preceding verse says: “After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,” as we read in Matthew 1:18. Moreover, even after the angel appeared, Mary is still described in Holy Scripture as betrothed. If the interpretation offered by these people were true, she would have been called Joseph’s wife, not his betrothed. According to the heterodox argument, all this matchmaking and marriage supposedly took place at the beginning of her pregnancy.
Yet when the time came for Mary to give birth, Holy Scripture still described her as betrothed. Let us hear what Luke says: “Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea.” Why did he go up? To be registered by himself? No, but with Mary. Who was she? His wife? No: “with Mary, who was betrothed to him and was with child.” This is Luke 2:4–5. Why does it not say “with his wife,” but rather “with Mary, who was betrothed to him”? That is the point. And if you opponents insist on interpreting the Gospel literally in this matter, then tell us: the angel calls Joseph “son of David”—“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid,” and so forth. Was he literally David’s son? Certainly, you will say no. Why, then, do you not interpret that phrase literally, while interpreting the matter of Mary literally? And why do you not reject the whole passage, since it was also a dream? You could easily say, “We do not believe in dreams, so we reject it.” I think you would be more honest if you rejected the entire Gospel than you are now, when you distort it. Another proof that Mary never became Joseph’s wife is that nowhere is she called the wife of Joseph, but always the Mother of the Child or the Mother of Jesus. For example, what does Matthew 2:11 say? “The Child”
“The Child with Mary His mother.” What does Matthew 2:13 say? “Arise, take the Child and His mother.” What does Matthew 2:14 say? “And he arose, took the Child and His mother by night.” What does Matthew 2:20 say? “And he arose, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.” Nowhere, then, does it say, “his wife.” And in Luke 2:43 we read: “Joseph and His mother did not know it.” What does it say in 2:48? “And His mother said to Him.” And in 2:51? “And His mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” But it is not only Matthew and Luke. What about John? What does John say? He does not call Mary the wife of Joseph, but the mother of Jesus.
“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.” Not the wife of Joseph, but the mother of Jesus. John 2:1. “And when the wine ran out,” it says, “the mother of Jesus said to Him,” in 2:3; and, “His mother said to the servants,” in 2:5. We read the same thing in Acts 1:14. This, then, is the true designation of our Most Holy Theotokos: the mother of the Child and the mother of Jesus, not the wife of Joseph, because she was never his spouse, but only betrothed to him. This was so that she might remain under his protection, shelter, and guardianship, as
we said earlier. Yet despite all these clear testimonies, as you know, the so-called Roman Church, unfortunately, through a mistaken interpretation of these passages, has even established, as they say, a feast on January 23 commemorating the marriage of the Theotokos to Joseph. Unfortunately, it failed to understand the meaning of Matthew 1:19–20 and 24, because Matthew, as we know, was a Hebrew and knew Greek only through practical use, and his Gospel is full of Hebraisms. Luke, however, knew Greek well, clarifies the matter, and relates that when...
Joseph went up to Bethlehem for the census, he went “with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child,” and not “with his wife,” as we said before. This passage proves that the teaching of the so-called Roman Church—that a marriage supposedly took place between Mary and Joseph—and its establishment of a special feast on January 23 are not true. In general, if we wish to understand this matter, although Joseph was instructed in a vision, in Matthew 1:20, to assume the role of the supposed father, as Luke states very clearly in 3:23, “being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph,”
it does not follow that he also contracted a marriage with Mary, or that he necessarily took her into his home as his wife. For Luke says that even on the eve of the birth, as we heard, she was still betrothed to Joseph. And when she returned from Elizabeth, where did she go? She went to her own house, not to his. “And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her own house”—not his. Luke 1:56. Nevertheless, some of the Holy Fathers teach that “Mary was given by God, certainly not in marriage, but for companionship under one roof.”
John Chrysostom, for example, says this in his fourth homily on Matthew. Yet “dwelling together” does not always have the meaning given to it by the various opponents of Orthodoxy, namely marital union between Joseph and Mary. For besides living together or sharing one’s life, the expression can also mean being associated with someone, being connected, residing in the same large dwelling, and other related meanings. Thus, beloved, Mary was under Joseph’s direct supervision, guardianship, and protection, but not under the same roof, as Holy Scripture itself clearly states. This is shown by Matthew’s words in 1:18: “before they came together.”
It is also shown by the words, “Do not be afraid to take her”—that is, to receive her—or, in other words, “do not hesitate to receive her.” These expressions prove that until the vision, that is, until the fourth month of the pregnancy, the betrothed couple had not lived together. And since they had not lived together up to that point, it follows most reasonably that after the Angel’s revelation of the incomprehensible Mystery, they did not live together either. Now, of course, there are other stumbling blocks in these texts. One is found in those two words, “until she had.” Here our opponents tell us that they see something. “Do you not see,” they say, “that Scripture says he did not know her until she gave birth, before they came together? Therefore, he knew her afterward.” If, then, you say this about the Ever-Virgin Mary...
Let us take this case from the beginning of Scripture, beloved, and interpret it by means of Scripture itself. First, I would like to say this: in the language of Holy Scripture, the expressions “until,” “until such time as,” and “until when” do not always bear the meaning assigned to them by every kind of opponent. They do not refer only to a period of time after which the opposite occurs. They can also mean “always” and “eternally.” Let us see. In this case, “until” was not used to tell us that Joseph knew her afterward, but to exclude any previous childbirth.
This is also demonstrated by other passages of Scripture. The text means that this was her first childbirth: until then, she had never given birth. We may cite the following parallel examples. First, in Psalm 71:7 we read: “In His days righteousness shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is taken away.” If “until” has the meaning our opponents—the Jehovah’s Witnesses and others—give it, then after the moon is removed, God’s righteousness must turn into unrighteousness. Such a conclusion is reckless, irrational, and indefensible. Second:
In John 9:18 we read: “The Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of the man and questioned them.” In this passage, the word “until” indicates the continuation of the same state: the Jews still did not believe even after the blind man’s parents had been summoned, as the divinely inspired Evangelist himself relates in verses 24–41. Third, in Psalm 109:1, together with Matthew 22:44 and Acts 2:35, we read: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.’” Here too, “until”
has the sense of something permanent and everlasting. Otherwise, we would have to believe that a time will come when the Lord will cease to be beside God, with God, if “until” has only a temporal meaning and not an eternal one.
There is another classic verse in Genesis which says: “The waters of the flood continued to decrease until the tenth month.” Here too, “until” indicates permanence and continuation, not a reversal. For if we accepted the interpretation some people give—that the waters decreased until the tenth month and then ceased decreasing—neither they nor any of us would be here today. Fifth, there is another verse which says the following:
Genesis 8:7: “And he sent out the raven; and it went out and did not return until the waters had dried up from the earth.” So we ask: since the raven did not return while there was water, did it perhaps return once the earth had dried? According to their interpretation, it would have had to return afterward. Sixth, in 2 Samuel 6:23, also called 2 Kingdoms, we read: “And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child until the day of her death.” We ask all these opponents, these interpreters of every kind who twist the text: since Michal did not give birth until she died, how can they maintain that she did not give birth after her death? For according to the way they interpret “until,” she
would have had to give birth after death. You see, then, how matters stand. There is yet another verse, Matthew 28:20: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Will He perhaps cease to be with them after the end? That too would be absurd. Let us not be deceived. The Theotokos bore other children after the birth of the Lord no more than the floodwaters stopped receding, the raven returned to the ark after the earth had dried, or Michal gave birth after her death. John Chrysostom himself gives us the correct—the most correct—interpretation of “until,” saying:
“He said this here, certainly not so that you might suspect that afterward Joseph knew her, but so that you might understand that before the birth the Virgin was entirely untouched.” This is from his fifth homily on Matthew. These points have been added in love and out of a sense of duty, as a continuation of our talks concerning the Theotokos. Perhaps, by her grace and with your love, we shall be able to continue in our next talk. Once again, rejoice in the Lord.

Παραδείγματι, η Θεοτόκος στην επίσκεψη της Ελισάβετ. Τι διαβάζουμε εκεί; «Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν ἡ Ἐλισάβετ τὸν ἀσπασμὸν τῆς Μαρίας, ἐσκίρτησε τὸ βρέφος ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ αὐτῆς». «Καὶ ἐπλήσθη», συνεχίζει, «Πνεύματος Ἁγίου ἡ Ἐλισάβετ, καὶ ἀνεφώνησε φωνῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπεν· Εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξί, καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας σου. Καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο, ἵνα ἔλθῃ ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ Κυρίου μου πρός με;» Ιδού, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον διά της Ελισάβετ αποκαλεί τη Μαριάμ μητέρα του Κυρίου της, του Κυρίου της, του Θεού της δηλαδή, μητέρα. Και ρωτάτε: ποιος άλλος είναι αυτός ο Κύριος;
Θεοῦ». Και ρωτάτε, εφόσον το γεννώμενο είναι Υιός Θεού, πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί αυτή που έτεκε τον Υιό του Θεού; Δεν πρέπει να ονομαστεί Θεοτόκος; Δεύτερον, στους Ρωμαίους α΄ 3, διαβάζουμε: «Τοῦ γενομένου ἐκ σπέρματος Δαβὶδ κατὰ σάρκα, τοῦ ὁρισθέντος Υἱοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν δυνάμει κατὰ Πνεῦμα ἁγιωσύνης ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν». Αλλά εάν ο εκ σπέρματος Δαβίδ είναι Υιός του Θεού και Θεός ευλογητός, πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί αυτή που έτεκε τον Υιόν του Θεού, τον ευλογητόν; Δεν πρέπει να ονομαστεί Θεοτόκος; Άλλο εδάφιο. Στους Ρωμαίους θήτα 5. Τι λέει εκεί;
«Ὧν οἱ πατέρες, καὶ ἐξ ὧν ὁ Χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα· ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων Θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας». Πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί αυτή που έτεκε τον Υιόν του Θεού, τον ευλογητόν εις τους αιώνας; Βεβαίως Θεοτόκος. Ακόμη, στους Γαλάτας δέλτα 4 λέει: «Ὅτε ἦλθε τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου, ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν Υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, γενόμενον ἐκ γυναικός, γενόμενον ὑπὸ νόμον, ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον ἐξαγοράσῃ» και λοιπά. Και ακόμη, εάν ο αποσταλείς εκ Θεού για να γεννηθεί εκ γυναικός είναι Υιός αυτού, πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί, εφόσον απέστειλε τον Υιόν αυτού, αυτή που έτεκε τον Υιόν αυτού, του Θεού δηλαδή;
«Πᾶν πνεῦμα ὃ ὁμολογεῖ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστι· καὶ πᾶν πνεῦμα ὃ μὴ ὁμολογεῖ τὸν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἔστι, καὶ τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ τοῦ Ἀντιχρίστου». Δεν υπάρχει αυτό στη Γραφή μας; Α΄ Ιωάννου δέλτα 2-3. Πώς λοιπόν να μη μεταχειριστούμε εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι τη λέξη Θεοτόκος, την εκφράζουσα θαυμασίως το γράμμα και το πνεύμα της Αγίας Γραφής και αποδίδουσα το μέγα της ευσεβείας μυστήριον, «Θεὸς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί», την ενανθρώπηση δηλαδή του Κυρίου;
