Summary

God does not immediately condemn sinners but grants time, conscience, and providential warnings so that they may repent and be saved. After Bathsheba became pregnant, David repeatedly tried to conceal his sin by recalling Uriah from battle, sending him home, and making him drunk. The lecture warns against bodily passions and presents Psalm 50 (51) as David’s enduring confession of his fall, tears, repentance, and spiritual renewal.

Our lesson tonight will, in a sense, continue the thoughts we have been discussing on the subject of sin and God’s longsuffering toward our sin. Thank you. You will remember that our last talk—apart from last night’s, which was dedicated to the Honorable Forerunner—was devoted to the Fall of man and God’s longsuffering toward fallen man.

Although God gave him every opportunity to repent, he did not repent. In this way, I wanted to remind...

...all of us that God is longsuffering when man falls. He does not catch him red-handed, as we would say, although He certainly could catch him in the very act—while he is sinning, committing a crime, or breaking the law. Yet God does not arrest him and immediately bring him to trial. He leaves him to face his conscience and its rebuke, and in other ways He reminds him to repent. If a person makes good use of God’s longsuffering and of the means of help He offers him for repentance, he can still be saved. For Christ did not come into the world...

...to destroy the world, crush it, or send it to Hell. I do not know whether you remember the occasion when our Christ went with His disciples to speak in a village, and the people drove them away and would not even receive them. John and James became angry—furious, as we would say—and asked permission to call down fire from heaven, as in the days of the Prophet Elijah, and burn up those who had refused to receive them. But our Christ said that we are not of such a spirit. We did not come to fill Hell; Hell can easily be filled. The aim is to find a way to leave Hell empty. That is the point. So tonight I will once again draw upon an account from the Old Testament, just as I did the day before yesterday.

It shows clearly how God deals with the sinner, what measures God takes, and what happens if man, as I say, makes use of them. It concerns a fall that will be discussed for as long as the world exists: the fall of David. David’s fall was no ordinary fall. It was not the fall of an uneducated, ignorant, or uncultivated man. It was the fall of a king, an educated man who was also a prophet, a man endowed with grace. You understand, then, what kind of fall this was. And afterward this fall became the occasion for the composition of what is known as Psalm 50: ‘Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy’—words that are recited, have always been recited, and will be recited until the end of the age.

It is a psalm of repentance, a psalm of tears, a psalm acknowledging the Fall. Since it finds all of us, in one way or another, made of the same clay, David left it to us in a form suited to our own condition. The more deeply we understand this psalm, the more we will perceive how completely David was renewed after his spiritual rebirth. I wanted, then, to bring this event to your attention. I am borrowing this passage, of course, from the Old Testament, so that we may see how God thinks and not become complacent and say, ‘Ah, God must have forgotten,’ and so forth. No, God has forgotten nothing. Even if, in His goodness, He wished to forget these things, His justice would not allow it—and neither would Satan. Satan would accuse Him of injustice and say, ‘How can this be? This man belongs to me. I have charged this debt to him. How can You settle it? In what way has he repented? He did not accept the means You Yourself showed him.’

What I shall read to you tonight, and what we shall then discuss more fully, is taken from 2 Samuel in the Old Testament. Those of you who own an Old Testament know that in the Septuagint there are four Books of Kingdoms. Those who have the Bible Society edition rather than the Septuagint text will find that the first two Books of Kingdoms are called 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel. The different editions number and name certain books differently. In the eleventh chapter of this book, then, we read the following: ‘And it came to pass in the following year’—there is some historical background before this—‘at the time...’

‘...when kings go out to war, David sent Joab, his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.’ He sent his generals, the army, and the rest out to war, while he himself remained in the capital, as we would say. ‘And toward evening’—one afternoon, as we would put it—‘David arose from his bed.’ He had taken his midday sleep and awakened in the afternoon. After sleeping, he walked about on the roof of the palace, taking a stroll on its upper terrace.

A woman of exceptional beauty. David sent someone to inquire about the woman. She pleased him; he desired her. Because he failed to guard his eyes, the desire passed into his heart. His heart was now taken captive, and from this point onward it acted on Satan’s behalf.

He sent men whom he trusted, obviously. He did not know who she was—whether she was married or unmarried. In any case, he sent men to investigate. Unfortunately, people willing to do such things can always be found. Perhaps we ourselves have sometimes helped facilitate the illicit relationships and desires of others without ever even confessing it. So he sent them to discover who and what she was. They returned and said, ‘Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliab, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?’ ‘Then David sent messengers and took her.’ When he inquired, they told him exactly who she was.

Indeed, she was the wife of an officer serving in the army. Once David learned who she was and to whom she belonged, he sent men to summon her. ‘Then David sent messengers and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her.’ He did not have her brought in chains; he summoned her, and she went. One might say that she should have anticipated such a thing when she went there. Why else did the king want you? We must be cautious and, as far as it lies within our power, prevent certain situations before they arise. If something lies beyond our power, then God Himself will put forth His hand.

Where our own hand can reach, God does not put forth His hand in our place. You saw this when He worked the miracle of raising Lazarus. He brought him out after four days in the tomb, but He did not loose his hands. ‘You can do that. I have done what you could not do. You could not bring him out, so I brought him out. You can untie his hands, so you must untie them.’ I repeat: whatever I can do to protect myself, I must do; God will not do it in my place. As for what I cannot guard against, provided that I am watchful and God-fearing, He will protect me in His own way, even miraculously. Let us continue. The woman, then, lay with him, feeling secure because her husband was at the front.

Her husband was a soldier on active duty and could not return. She therefore felt free and safe, and perhaps thought, ‘I am going to the king; this is an honor for me.’ Does this not happen today, as it has throughout every age? With certain exceptions, many men and women fail to remain faithful, especially in occupations that require a husband to live far from his wife or a wife far from her husband. This also happens among sailors and their wives, because they are separated from one another. If spiritual fathers were asked to keep records, they might find that, out of a hundred adulterous women, eighty are the wives of men in such occupations, or that eighty adulterous husbands are men living far from their wives. Of course, this is not an absolute rule.

It is, however, a large proportion. For this reason, I would like everyone to think carefully about their way of life and their work before marrying. It may seem good to rely on the arm of an officer, but tomorrow he will not be beside me. What will happen then? Will moral conviction alone sustain me? It may seem good to rely on the arm of a sailor, but what will happen? Or it may seem good for a man to marry, but if he cannot keep his wife near him, God will require an account of these matters. A person is obliged to foresee and consider all this: ‘I lack self-control, whether I am a woman or a man. Consequently, I will inevitably commit adultery and be ruined.’ Perhaps one should not enter such a union at all; otherwise, one drags another person down as well and may turn someone else into an adulteress. I do not know.

Yet she yielded at once, without any resistance. In any case, the passage says: ‘He lay with her, and she had been cleansed from her uncleanness’—that is, her monthly period had ended—‘and she returned to her house.’ She lay with him, and each took pleasure in the other. Then she returned home, conceived, and after a few days realized that she was pregnant. So she sent word to David and said, ‘I am pregnant.’ She informed the king that she was with child. This immediately presented him with a problem, because her husband was away with the army. How had she become pregnant while he was gone? Clearly, then, she was pregnant by David. What torment he suffered, king though he was! Instead of carefully considering the whole matter and then acting wisely, or at least coming to his senses afterward and saying, ‘Look what I have become entangled in,’ and seeking some proper way out, we see that he devised other, base means—though humanly speaking they seemed reasonable. His first wicked idea was to bring the husband back, so that, upon returning from the front, Uriah would have the opportunity to be with his wife.

Since the matter was still recent, the timing of the conception could then be explained, and David would be able to conceal what had happened. Such things happen among us as well, but when the child is born its appearance makes the truth obvious. During the Occupation, women conceived children by men of different races, and when the child was born it was immediately obvious that the husband was not the father. The child belonged to someone else.

In any case, ‘David sent word to Joab, saying’—Joab was the general, the commander-in-chief—‘Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.’ When Uriah arrived and greeted him, he asked, ‘Why did you summon me?’ David’s answer was simply that he wanted to learn how they were doing and how the army was faring. ‘You are an officer, so give me the details. Tell me how the operations there are progressing,’ and so forth.

In any case, after Uriah had told him all these things, David gave him leave. ‘Go home,’ he said, ‘and rest. We shall see later when you are to depart again.’ At the same time, when Uriah set out toward his house at the king’s command, David also sent royal food to the home of the officer and, obviously, of his own mistress. But what happened? ‘Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.’ Evidently, this officer was a serious and honorable man. He thought, ‘The others are being killed up there, and shall I go home and sleep with my wife?’ So he slept at the palace with the king’s servants. When the king learned that he had not gone home—and thus that the plan by which he hoped to conceal his guilt had failed—the situation changed.

They reported to David, saying, ‘Uriah did not go down to his house.’ David said to Uriah, ‘Have you not just returned from a journey? Are you not tired? Why did you not go down to your house to rest, wash your feet, change your clothes, and so forth? Why did you not go there?’ Uriah, showing the honor of a true soldier, replied to David: ‘The Ark, Israel, and Judah dwell in tents; my lord Joab, the commander-in-chief, and my lord’s servants are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife?’

‘As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing. It is impossible for me to do it.’ So that scheme was finished; David’s first plan had failed. But he continued with a second plan. ‘Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you away.”’ Stay another couple of days, he thought; perhaps Uriah would feel the desire to go home, and then he could depart. ‘So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next,’ but he did not go home. ‘Then David called him, and he ate and drank before him.’ David even gave a banquet for him. Even such things are done to facilitate adultery, if you will pardon the expression. God sees many such deeds and endures them. Yes, He endures them. David gave him a banquet: ‘Then David called him, and he ate and drank before him, and David made him drunk.’

He did it deliberately—a second scheme, a second deception. And he was a king, doing such things! Once sin gets hold of you, you become its plaything. So David made him drunk in this second attempt, but Uriah still did not go home. “And in the evening he went out to sleep on his bed with the servants of his lord, and he did not go down to his house.” He is ruining my plan. Could David not see that these obstacles were helping him come to repentance? He should have said, “My God, what are we doing now?” But instead, he continued in his own way. “And it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.” He gave the letter to Uriah himself. This was the treacherous plan. In the letter he told Joab to place Uriah at a vulnerable point on the battlefront,

where the danger was greatest, so that he would be killed. And the poor man took the letter himself and carried it to the commander. The commander did as the king had ordered him. “And the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, and some of the people, some of David’s servants, fell; and Uriah the Hittite also died.” And so he too was gone. Do you see what sin does? One sin immediately brings another, and that one brings another, and then another. As I said this morning, when I was speaking about the Honorable Forerunner and a similar matter commemorated today, sin is like an avalanche that begins small at the summit of a mountain. A little bird flies past, brushes the snow with its wings, and a small amount begins to slide. As that snow descends, it gathers more snow, and that gathers still more, until a whole mountain comes crashing down, destroying a city and everything else in its path. That is how sin begins.

A person is not watchful. Instead of tearing down his unlawful bed, saying, “What happened ends here,” asking God’s forgiveness, and letting God provide a way forward, he takes care to add murder as well. David added murder, and still did not tear down that bed. The same thing happened with John the Forerunner. His beheading involved a similar matter. Herod took the wife of his own brother. And because John dared to remind him that what he was doing was not permitted by God, instead of Herodias coming to her senses and tearing down that unlawful bed, she added murder as well, in order to silence the mouth that had dared to call it unlawful. This always happens. We are not watchful, of course. We imagine that we can conduct our lives however we please. That is a mistake.

I do not know whether you noticed where the whole affair began. Many will say that David was to blame. I tell you, David was not the only one to blame; she was also to blame. She aroused David, and David proved weak. My lady, why are you bathing naked in an exposed place, outdoors, in broad daylight, while it is still afternoon? Some women who go about naked say, “Then close your eyes.” I will close my eyes, but the devil will close yours as well. For when you hand me poison, will I alone be judged for taking it, or will you also be judged for offering it to me? Do you know how many medals, so to speak, will hang around our necks tomorrow for the people whom we ourselves dragged down with us? Do you know how grave a matter this is?

I have written a little sixteen-page booklet entitled When a Woman Does Not Fear God. In the old account, only a woman’s heel became visible because she was covered all the way down, and that heel caused Holofernes to stumble and led to bloodshed. Her heel alone! Today hardly any part of a woman’s body is covered, and she thinks she may go about like that even inside the Church. Forgive me; I do not know what else to say. We need to understand these things. I think we are intelligent enough not to confuse one matter with another. But what did the Forerunner say? So the messenger came and reported to David everything for which Joab had sent him.

The messenger told David that the enemy had prevailed against them, that they had suffered many casualties, and that Uriah the Hittite was also dead. So he too was gone. What was the result? This murder was the fruit of adultery—something God certainly does not desire, bless, or accept. In countless ways, He continually seeks to remind people that one day they will have to answer to Him.

One day they will indeed have to answer to Him. In any case, the account then says this: David told the messenger, “This is what you shall say to Joab: ‘Do not let this matter trouble you, for the sword devours one person and then another. It makes no difference.’”

“I will send other men, the position will be reinforced, and you will be protected.” All the while he was saying within himself, “What matters is that what I wanted has happened. He is out of the way, and now I shall have her for myself.” When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband Uriah had died, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning had passed, David sent for her and brought her into his house. She became his wife and bore him a son, the son conceived in adultery. But the thing David had done appeared evil in the eyes of the Lord. It may have seemed good to him here on earth, but in Heaven what had taken place was not judged to be right.

The cause of all this, however you choose to describe it, was sensual pleasure. That is where it began. We must understand that the flesh was not given to tyrannize over the spirit. It was given to serve the spirit, as a servant to the soul. Yet sadly, the flesh can become the cause of perdition. It was given as a kind of cage to care for and guard the bird within, which is the soul; but the exact opposite happens, and the soul is lost because of the flesh. We do not guard against these things as carefully as we should. For this reason, I want to remind you here: be as watchful as you can, and do not give in to the desires of the flesh.

If there are a hundred people in Hell, ninety-eight are there because of the flesh. In the final analysis, sins of the flesh brought them to that point. Allow me now to share with you several sayings of holy men concerning sensual pleasure, which becomes a cause of the destruction of the human soul. John Chrysostom says that pleasure is a hook, a hook that pulls with tremendous force: it catches souls and drags them to perdition. Pleasure is the mother of sin; pleasure nurses the eternal worm. At first it...

sweetens the experience of the one who enjoys it, producing a certain sweetness and delight; afterward, however, it becomes more bitter than gall. At the moment it feels pleasurable, but afterward comes the bitterness born of that temporary enjoyment. Our Christ likened sin, especially carnal sin, to carob pods. When a person chews carob pods, he truly tastes a certain sweetness, but afterward he spits them out, because they are not fit for his stomach. So it is with pleasures, as you know. Whether it is wine, the flesh, gambling cards, a woman, or whatever else it may be, we fix our desire upon these things. John Chrysostom also expresses another thought: “Pleasure,” he says, “is the great evil bait”—the worst bait placed upon the hook.

We are very prone to sin, especially those who easily fall into sins of the flesh. Through pleasure every soul is drawn toward death as though caught by a hook. And especially those who become accustomed to such sins may never rise again. This man’s fall began above all with adultery. Adultery presents itself as an easy side door, easily forced open and seemingly without many consequences. That is how it appears to man: he is not dealing with a virgin, so he imagines that no great responsibility will be demanded of him. But before God it is not so. It is a sin that even nature itself does not accept. I do not know whether you have ever read the following passage in a collection of sayings from the Fathers:

It describes adultery between people belonging to two different married couples, because from the moment a husband and wife are crowned, each married couple forms a household of its own. The husband’s body does not belong to him alone, but also to his wife; and the wife’s body does not belong to her alone, but also to her husband. Therefore she cannot dispose of it by herself and offer it as the member of a prostitute or an adulteress, or anything of that kind.

There is a snake called the viper. Do you know what the viper mates with? It goes to the shore of the sea and whistles. Then a fish called the moray eel, which resembles a snake, comes out of the water and mates with it. Do you hear? A fish with a snake, and a snake with a fish. These are strange things indeed. “Brood of vipers”—where does such a brood come from? From adultery. Do you remember what our Christ said to the Jews? A Father, reflecting on this, says: “Adultery against the essence of nature can also be seen in nature itself, in the coupling of the viper and the sea-dwelling moray eel.” Since...

In the very nature of these two creatures, he says, you can clearly see nature being violated by an adulterous union. Therefore, let those who plot against the marriages of others learn a lesson—those who intrude into another man’s bed or another woman’s bed. Let them learn what kind of reptiles they resemble: the viper or the moray eel. Such is the person who does these things. Let them restrain their wanton passions and be instructed by this creature’s emergence from the sea. Let them learn, he says, from the fish of the sea, and specifically from this moray eel. Furthermore, as I said in the Church this morning, nature as a whole declares that it does not agree with adultery.

We see this in both the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom: nature resists it. If you read Solomon, you will find the words, “The children of adulterers shall not come to maturity.” They are lost and never prosper; the offspring of adulterers never prospers. Adulterers, of course, do not commit adultery in order to have children, but if children are born, those children will come to a sorrowful end. We see later that this child conceived in adultery died. God did not accept the situation. Although David repented, the child died. God removed the child, for divine justice could not bear the sight, nor could the people be left to see a king with an illegitimate child. If, for example, you examine a certain variety of oranges, you will find that...

It has no seed inside, no pits. Indeed, we prefer such oranges because they are sweeter and have no seeds. They come from the crossing of two distinct families, two different varieties joined together, and they produce no seed. They are under God’s curse. They possess sweetness, just as adultery possesses temporary sweetness; but they have no seed and no succession. God forbids it because it comes from an adulterous union, and through it He seeks to remind adulterers, both men and women, to take heed. If we examine a mule and inquire about its lineage, we find that the mule comes from such a mixed union. A mule is the offspring of a horse and a donkey. Does it reproduce? It does not. It has no seed. God does not accept such a union. We keep mules and use them, and they even live to old age,

but they have no descendants. God does not consent to offspring from such a union multiplying. I do not know whether you come from regions where there are certain birds that we call atsarantoi in our area. This bird is also a cross between a goldfinch and a canary. Although both males and females are produced, they do not reproduce, because they come from this mixed union of canary and goldfinch. The resulting cross, this new variety, has both male and female, yet it does not multiply. “If they keep silent,” He says, “the stones will cry out”; the very stones will speak. Truly so. I have more to tell you about the consequences of adultery—serious things. During the Occupation, for example...

The brigade found itself down at El Alamein. The following incident took place there. You know that there are camels, usually brown in color. But there is also a breed of white camels, and the hide of a white camel is worth ten times as much as a brown one. People try to breed more of them, but white camels are difficult to reproduce. One camel driver had a mother camel that gave birth to a male calf. Wanting to produce more white camels and make money, he tried to force the offspring to mate with its mother. But it refused. He struggled for a long time, but it would not do it. Eventually—I do not know how he enticed it, managed it, or deceived it, whether he covered its face or did something else—he made it mate with its mother. Afterward, when the animal realized what it had done...

When it realized that it had mated with its mother, it charged at the camel driver, knocked him down, and crushed him. People struck the camel with chairs and pieces of wood and tried to reach the man in time, but nothing could stop it. It crushed the camel driver, and the man was gone. There is another incident that we forget when thinking about the day of judgment. I do not know whether you are from Trikala; I hear that many of you are from Karditsa. You pass a crossroads where a monastery lies on your right, and there is a small town there. Many storks come in summer and build numerous nests. A lazy man who worked at the coffeehouse saw the nests above and decided to play a trick. He took a small turkey egg and placed it in one of the nests while the storks were away.

At some point, the couple placed the egg up in the nest among the storks’ other eggs. The birds took turns incubating them—sometimes the female, sometimes the male—and during the incubation they noticed nothing. The couple kept watching to see how the whole affair would turn out. They saw that the pair of storks had become very sorrowful, especially the female. They watched closely, wondering what was wrong. She huddled at the edge of the nest and would not even leave to find food, while the male spent nearly the whole day staring at the nest. He could see that a stranger had appeared there, that one who did not belong to their kind had entered the nest.

In any case, they kept watching. And what did they see? One day, they saw twenty or thirty storks come and gather all around the nest like prosecutors. The female stork stood off to one side, grief-stricken, her head bowed, as though already condemned. There was a tremendous uproar when they discovered, “This one is not ours.” After a long while, as though they had held a council among themselves, they all rushed at her together and killed her. The female stork died. What can you say, then, about our own women—and about our own men? The female stork died. So I do not know how you see this. Someone may say, “Glory to God that I have not gone that far. I have never had to tell my spiritual father that I cheated on my husband.”

“I cheated on my wife”—for many people do go that far. It is good, of course, not to reach that point. But have you perhaps given others the opportunity to do such a thing and helped them do it? Then you are equally guilty. Yet you did not confess that you stood watch for them, covered for the woman, gave her the key to the room, lent them your car, provided money, or helped conceal where she was going—to the doctor to abort the child. These things are treated lightly, aren’t they? You discuss them with her, you know all about them, she tells you everything on the telephone every day—where she was that night, what she did, and so on. All that is nothing, is it? None of it has ever been mentioned to your spiritual father. And do you know where all this begins? It begins when we are still little children, sitting at our school desks.

One woman covers for another, and one man covers for another. The guilty one is considered to be the person who says, “Madam, Miss So-and-so was wandering here and there with some great hulking fellow.” That person will be branded a snitch and made an outcast. A girlfriend is expected to cover for her friend, and a man for his friend, no matter what. Have these things ever been brought to our spiritual father in Holy Confession? We deceive ourselves. When Joseph saw that Mary was pregnant, he could not keep her in his house. “You must leave,” he told her. “Being a righteous man and unwilling to make her a public example,” he intended to send her away. “You will bring fire down upon me and burn me.” In how many ways, then, do we cover up adultery and fornication? How do we make them easier, provide the means, act as matchmakers for corruption, and encourage them? We condemn certain women who act as procuresses and the like. But are we not doing the very same thing? What are we doing with the telephone calls made from our own homes? What else are we doing when we cover up another person’s affair? “What can I do? What can I do?”

What you must do is show by your attitude that you know what is going on and that you want no part in it. Say, “Do not speak to me about this again. Forgive me, but I am hanging up. Do not involve me in such a matter again. Pull yourselves together and remain at home: you, the husband, with your children, and you, the wife, with your children.” That is what you must do. Take heed. I do not know what has taken place in your lives up to this day. I am deeply sorry to speak this way, but this is how things are. Adultery, then, is a grave sin; God does not accept it. That is why it says here, “But the thing David had done was evil in the sight of God.” And what was the result? What do You now do for Your creature? What do I do? Listen: “And the Lord sent Nathan to David.” Nathan was a prophet, and now God sends a prophet to a prophet. He came to David and spoke to him. God had not told him what he was to do or what he was to say. He was a prophet.

He was a human being; the Holy Spirit would tell him what to do when he arrived. So the Lord sent him, and Nathan said to David, “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up with him and with his children. It ate from his bread, drank from his cup, and slept in his arms; it was like a daughter to him. Then a traveler came to the rich man. The rich man was unwilling to take from his own flocks or herds to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest.” Then David’s anger blazed. He was furious—as if to say, “Can there really be people like that?”

David’s anger burned fiercely against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die. He shall repay the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and showed no mercy.” Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man.” Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: “I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. I gave, and gave, and gave. Why did you despise the word of the Lord and do what was evil in His sight? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife as your own wife. You killed him by the sword of the sons of Ammon. Now, therefore…”

“The sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.” Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will raise up evil against you from within your own house. I will take your wives before your very eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. For you acted in secret, but I will do this before all Israel and in the light of the sun.” Then David said, “I have sinned against the Lord.” I admit it. I did exactly what he says: I killed that man, took his wife, and I deserve the punishment. “I have sinned against the Lord.” Not as we say, “Father, I cheated on my husband.” What do I know—once, twice...

“I cheated on my husband.” No, Father: “I trampled upon God’s law concerning adultery,” not merely, “I cheated on my husband.” What kind of language is that? I trampled upon God’s law; I trampled upon God Himself; I did not heed God—that is the truth. “I have sinned against the Lord.” David admitted it. We would have said, “And who is going to die? Watch your tongue! Do you know whom you are speaking to? You had better hope I do not turn on you as well.” And all the while, we try to cover up our own deeds. Cover up what? Things that lie exposed and can never be covered. But when David admitted his sin, Nathan immediately replied, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.” For David should have been put to death as both an adulterer and a murderer; he should have received the recompense due for what he had done. So what do we see? One prophet hears the confession of another prophet, and a prophet...

Speaking on God’s behalf, the prophet says: “And the Lord, through me, has indeed put away your sin.” He forgives him. Then he goes on to say: “However, because by this deed you have given the enemies of the Lord great occasion to blaspheme Him, the child born to you shall surely die.” This child will not live; he will be taken away. An illegitimate child—especially the king’s child—cannot remain in the palace while people say, “This is an illegitimate child. Look what kind of God they have, a God who accepts such things.” Do you know what is said? Nathan had been sent to reach David in time and prevent his fall.

David carried out all these schemes: he sent orders, brought the man back, maneuvered him this way and that, made him drunk, and so on. God had sent Nathan to go and help prevent what was about to happen. But according to one tradition, the devil deceived Nathan on the way. Nathan came upon someone like the man who had fallen among thieves—a wounded man, half dead—and stayed with him for three days to help him, tend to him, and take him somewhere safe so that he would not die, and then to bury him if necessary. During that time, David’s fall took place. God had sent Nathan to reach him in time and prevent it. I mention this aspect as well because God does not desire the death of the sinner. On the one hand, He desires to reach him in time and prevent his fall; but if, in the end, the person himself is unwilling to obey...

These were the preventive measures God took on David’s behalf, and afterward we see his repentance. David is the third in the sequence to repent, because there was another before him chronologically—Cain. God also acted on Cain’s behalf, but he did not repent. Here, if you would like, I will say a few words about Cain as well, since I still have some time.

Just as he had been told, the child died within seven days. When the child fell ill, David took off his royal robes, put on sackcloth, and went and sat in ashes. He wept and prayed day and night, eating and drinking nothing. Various people came to him—courtiers and others—and tried to persuade him to eat, so that nothing would happen to him. They tried to comfort him, saying, “After all, the child is still a child; he will get well.” But nothing could move him.

He remained there for seven days. You can imagine what it was like, weeping for seven whole days. What happened to him? He became a complete wreck. On the seventh day, the child died. But once the child had died, who would dare go and tell him? If he had reached such a state while the child was still alive, they thought, then when we tell him that the child is dead, he himself will die. No one dared. But David was evidently an intelligent man. He saw them becoming agitated, so he turned to one of them and asked, “Has the child died?” “Yes,” the man replied. How did David know? The man said, “Yes, he has died.” David did not break down. He got up, washed himself, went to the temple and prayed, anointed his head with oil, and then went to the table to eat. He did not go to where the child was. So when they saw him act in this way...

They were dumbfounded. Until then, the man had been beside himself with grief. For this is not how we imagine someone behaving in such a situation. We would begin wailing and making a scene; we would throw ourselves upon the child, beat our breasts—all the things we usually do. But the table was set for him, they brought him food, and he sat down to eat. Now they were hovering around him, trying to understand what had come over him. Once again, he noticed that they were looking at him strangely. He said, “What is the matter with you? What is troubling you? What is it?” Then one of them, rather more tactfully, put the question to him: “O king, this is what perplexes us.” He said, “Tell me what is troubling you.” And the man replied, “For the seven days when the child was ill, we saw you weeping, sitting in ashes, and praying...”

And so on. “Now that the child has died,” they said, “you get up, wash, change your clothes, anoint your head with oil, go to the temple and pray, and then come back, sit down, and eat.” “Well,” he said, “what was I supposed to do? Do you know why I acted this way? As long as the child was alive, I prayed to God and said, ‘Punish me instead.’”

Can you imagine such a thing? We even declare war on God. For three years we do not go to Church, not even for the Resurrection service or anything else. Our cousins or nieces may come and take us out to help us get away from it all, but we return home feeling twice as crushed. Yet in Church we can truly find consolation and pray for the person whom Christ has taken into His hands. We will return to this later, but I am passing over it now so that I may have the opportunity to say a few words about the other subject, which I can see I will not have time to address. So, in conclusion, what I have just told you shows that God is longsuffering in every circumstance, toward every person, and regarding every sin, whatever its number or gravity. Never let the thought trouble you that you are too sinful. It makes no difference at all.

For example, suppose that the record against me contains every sin, from Cain the fratricide and that first murder, all the way to the crimes of every evildoer, lawbreaker, and prodigal at the end of the ages—as though they were all borne witness to in me. There is no need for many words: “I have sinned, Lord. I am at fault, and I confess it. Have mercy on me.” Do not make excuses. I confess and acknowledge that throughout all these years I have violated Your law, offended You, insulted You, trampled upon You, and so on.

Δεν ξέρω αν προσέξατε πού ξεκίνησε η υπόθεση. Πολλοί θα πουν ότι φταίει ο Δαβίδ. Εγώ σας λέγω, δεν φταίει ο Δαβίδ, φταίει αυτή. Φταίει αυτή, διότι αυτή ηλέκτρισε τον Δαβίδ. Ο Δαβίδ είναι ο αδύνατος. Εσύ, κυρά μου, πώς παίρνεις το μπάνιο σου γυμνή, εκτεθειμένη, που είσαι απ' έξω, ημέρα, απόγευμα ακόμη; «Να κλείσεις τα μάτια σου», που λένε ορισμένες, που κυκλοφορούν γυμνές. «Να κλείσεις τα μάτια σου». Εγώ θα τα κλείσω εγώ τα μάτια μου, αλλά θα τα κλείσει και εσένα ο διάβολος τα μάτια σου. Διότι, όταν μου μοιράζεις εμένα δηλητήριο, εγώ θα δικαστώ που το πήρα το δηλητήριο ή εσύ που μου το προσέφερες; Ξέρετε πόσα μετάλλια θα είναι κρεμασμένα στο λαιμό μας αύριο, που ανθρώπους τους σύραμε στο λαιμό μας εμείς; Ξέρετε πόσο σοβαρό θέμα είναι αυτό;

Ποημεία Η μία καλύπτει την άλλη και ο ένας καλύπτει τον άλλον. Θεωρείται ένοχος εκείνος ο οποίος θα πει: «Κυρία, η δεσποινίς τάδε με ένα μαντράχαλο πέντε μέτρα γύριζε από εδώ και από εκεί». Αυτός θα θεωρηθεί καρφί. Είναι αποδιοπομπαίος αυτός. Πρέπει να την καλύψει οπωσδήποτε η φιλενάδα ή ο φίλος τον φίλο. Έχουνε φτάσει στο πνευματικό αυτά; Αλησμονούμαστε. Ο Ιωσήφ, όταν είδε τη Μαρία έγκυο, δεν μπορούσε να την κρατήσει στο σπίτι. Δρόμο, της είπε. «Δίκαιος ων και μη θέλων αυτήν παραδειγματίσαι», έξω θα φύγεις. Θα ρίξεις φωτιά επάνω μου να με κάψεις. Πώς θα μην σκεπάζουμε λοιπόν τη μοιχεία, πώς θα σκεπάζουμε την πορνεία, πώς διευκολύνουμε, πώς δίνουμε μέσον, πώς κάνουμε προξενιά διαφθοράς, πώς δίνουμε προτροπή. Κατηγορούμε ορισμένες οι οποίες προαγάγουν και λοιπά. Αυτή τη δουλειά δεν κάνουμε εμείς; Και τι κάνουμε με τα τηλεφωνήματα από το σπίτι μας; Τι άλλο κάνουμε εμείς όταν καλύπτουμε την υπόθεση του άλλου; Τι να κάνω, τι να κάνω;
