Summary
The lecture teaches that every Christian is called not merely to venerate the saints but to imitate their holiness and pursue theosis and eternal life with Christ. Invoking Saint Phanourios chiefly to recover lost objects is criticized as superficial unless accompanied by repentance, imitation of his courage, and commitment to a luminous Christian life. The speaker concludes with traditions about Elijah’s future struggle against the Antichrist, his ministry with Enoch, and an urgent appeal to repentance, fasting, confession, and fidelity to God.

And even after thousands of years, I might say—even after their death—they continue to move the generations that follow. We, of course, come before them and present ourselves with our gifts and in various other ways.
We venerate these persons, thereby acknowledging, in an indirect way, that they truly were exceptional human beings. Yet we do not look deeply within ourselves and ask: Why should we not move anyone either...
...in this life or beyond the grave, through the way we pass through this world? If someone makes an honest inquiry today, he will discover that, while these people lived in this world, they paid heed to the Lord here—to Christ. And those whom Christ seals with His own seal have standing in eternity. We cannot deny the reality of their life, because through our outward expressions we indirectly acknowledge them; yet we are inconsistent. You say, “Go to this Saint.” But where are you yourself going?
In the present case, the Saint whose example we have before us today—Saint Phanourios—became holy, an example of virtue. Did he achieve anything other than this? Did he do anything beyond what he was obliged to do, since he came into the world and believed in Christ? Christ was crucified so that human beings might become saints. What else could Saint Phanourios have done? What else? If we become holy, will we have done anything other than what we were created to do? To give a simple example: if an orange tree produces oranges, must we applaud it for doing what it was meant to do? When a human being comes into the world, his purpose is to become holy. If he does not become holy, it would have been better for him not to come into the world at all. Why should he come? Merely to consume God’s good things—His fish and His cattle?
His eggplants and okra? Are we joking? The human being has a higher purpose. He is called to theosis, to become a little god by grace. Become saints; become gods by grace. This is the truth. And yet, although we indirectly acknowledge the holiness of one of God’s people with candles, pies, votive offerings, and one thing after another, we do not even want to imitate him. In a few days we shall celebrate the Precious Forerunner. We say, “Yes, Saint John is wonderful,” but I do not live his way of life: no self-restraint, no virginity, no fasting—nothing at all. We ignore everything that made him great. Why does he not give you a couple of slaps? You are an inconsistent human being. This consideration, and everything like it, should prevail in such cases. Where am I going now?
We gathered here—such a great crowd, last night as well—to venerate Saint Phanourios, men and women of Thalassia. But did anyone stop to think where this Saint is now, where this young man is, what he was in his lifetime, what he did, and how he succeeded in possessing such glory, such radiance, and such power today—hundreds of years later—to move humanity, as he will continue to do until the consummation of the ages? How did he accomplish this? That is the question. Whoever succeeds in living rightly in this world receives from Christ a seal upon his back and a seal here upon his forehead, and that seal has eternal authority—not merely until the grave, and not merely as long as this world exists, but throughout eternity. For of His Kingdom there shall be no end; and as He reigns there...
...His subjects will live with Him in eternity. You understand, then, how absurd it is for some of us to mock these things, considering them far-fetched or too grand. The world has another purpose. What is the purpose of the world? To pile up bricks, mortar, and iron, build things, and then tear them down? What is the purpose of the world? To make machines with which people kill one another? What is the purpose of the world? If a human being does not succeed in living beyond the grave with Christ, what world will he live in? What kind of world is ours? A bout of influenza catches us, a fever strikes us, and there go our joys, our high spirits, and everything else. For two or three days we are scarcely aware of anything. Such is the human being. And yet...
...God died for this human being. What, then, is man? In the future, if you wish, reflect on such things and speak sometimes with the Saints, with the Theotokos, and with Christ. Ask, “What do You want from me? What can I offer?” The answer will be: “I want nothing from you. I want you to look after your own soul and seek what is truly for your good. It is to your benefit to know Me as well. I Myself can neither be raised higher nor brought lower.” The Saint has received his place today. No one can blaspheme him and bring him down, nor can anyone praise him and raise him higher. The Lord has placed him where he belongs, and he too has taken his place in the arena of eternity. If you would like to hear a few words about him: Saint Phanourios is a newly revealed Saint, and we do not know much about his history. I think it would honor the Saint today, and be a blessing for us, if I shared with you some details about him which I myself found and copied down. The Saint is, of course, clearly a very ancient Saint.
He first became known in the fourteenth century, under the following circumstances. Rhodes, which was then under Turkish rule, had suffered some kind of disaster. Certain buildings and working-class neighborhoods had been destroyed—perhaps by an earthquake; I do not know the cause. At some point, a Turkish ruler there ordered the rubble and earth to be cleared away so that building work could begin. During this excavation, a church was discovered—an Orthodox church, of course. Its walls were found, along with decayed and ruined icons, other painted sections, church vessels, and so forth. But then, as we might say, a ray of light suddenly fell upon one particular icon...
...which shone so brightly and was so clean in comparison with all the others that had been destroyed there. The writer describes it with these exact words: “As though it had only just come from the painter’s hand”—as though it had come from the painter’s hands that very moment. Perfectly clean and entirely new. A miracle. By divine providence, it seems, a bishop happened to pass by there—a man who clearly possessed genuine faith—named Nilus Diasporinos. He took charge of the matter. He immediately understood that this was a Saint, since the Saint’s icon had been preserved amid those ruins and all the destruction wrought by time.
He came forward, asked for the icon, cleaned it, and read the inscription upon it: “Saint Phanourios.” That is how the name became known; that is how the Saint was revealed. This happened in the fourteenth century. But how many centuries earlier had that icon and church already existed there? How many years had the building lain in ruins, and when exactly did the excavation take place? We do not know the details. The icon was perfectly clean, and around its border were twelve scenes from the Saint’s martyrdom, for he was indeed martyred. First, he was shown as a young soldier holding a cross and a burning candle. These are especially characteristic symbols of virgin saints, both men and women. I do not know whether you have seen Byzantine icons of the virgin martyrs, for example—women who would not consent to surrender their bodies but remained brides of the Bridegroom alone. In one hand they hold the cross, and in the other a candle like this. In other words, they say to Satan, to the world, and to the flesh: “No. I prefer the cross.” The cross means the true faith, yes, but perhaps also martyrdom—and indeed, martyrdom. Here, then, we see that he was martyred. He chose the cross, and he appears as light, truly radiant. Unfortunately, however—allow me to say it—we remain attached to outward formalities: bringing the Saint’s pie and the like. We make a great fuss about it, especially the upper classes, who are involved in such things but pay little attention to praxis, the active ascetic life. But as for martyrdom...
...or a radiant life, there is nothing of the kind. Apart from a few exceptions, the rest of us are merely formalists. We preserve the outward form, but because we do not preserve the essence, it escapes us. Saint Phanourios chose the cross and thus, as a friend and soldier of the Crucified One, he is a model for us today. Yet we use him for secondary errands: to find the needle we have lost or the little jewel that fell from a button. We use him as an employee. And he condescends to help us. Many people have lit a candle to the Saint and found the object they had lost. Should he not have helped them? What do you take him for? Do you regard him as an employee? You will say, “But I keep him close to me.” Do you keep him in every aspect of your life, inwardly and outwardly, or only inwardly and not outwardly? Outwardly, you do not. We keep him only for our private needs, only as a servant, only as an employee. And yet the Saint condescends to this—as does Saint Menas.
He condescends to human weakness. Let each person take a position on this and respect it. Allow me to describe his martyrdom as this bishop copied it down. He says that in the first scene the Saint appears before a judge, being put on trial. Do you know how absurd it is for a human being to be judged because of his true faith? Yet the same thing happens today. Believers are judged by unbelievers. They may not be judged in a court of law, but they are judged in the coffeehouse, in the nightclub, and at the gambling table covered with green felt. Believers are put on trial. People say, “The Jesuits! These believers are Jesuits!” I would rather be a Jesuit with Jesus than be with no one at all. So this brave young man was clearly being judged for his true Christian faith. Second, the judge apparently handed him over to the soldiers.
In another scene, he appears surrounded by many soldiers. They have closed in around him. Third, these soldiers strike his mouth with stones because he had dared to confess the faith. They tried to seal his mouth by beating his mouth and head with stones. That is shown in a third scene. Then, since they evidently failed to break him even there, they took him elsewhere, threw him to the ground, and scourged him. This is shown as the fifth scene, more or less. Afterward he is depicted naked, with iron claws scraping his skin, clearly in the hope that he would lose heart and break under the torment.
Once again, it seems, they accomplished nothing. They took him from there, and in the next scene he appears before a tyrant seated upon his tribunal, who would issue his own sentences if the Saint refused to submit. As a result, the Saint is shown harnessed to a waterwheel, like the animals made to walk around in circles. They made him draw water from the well. Farther down, he is shown among wild beasts. This appears to have been the tyrant’s second sentence. Yet instead of tearing him apart, the beasts greet him. Those who possess the power and grace of God fear neither natural wild beasts...
...nor the other kind—the human beasts, of whom, unfortunately, there are many around us. Next, the Saint is shown lying on the ground with a huge stone upon him, which should have crushed him as flat as a cockroach. Only a cockroach could have emerged so flattened. But because he rose to his feet once again, he is shown farther down holding burning coals that give off incense and being ordered to offer incense to their idols, apparently as an act of worship or sacrifice. At that point the true nature of the matter is immediately revealed: the demons within the idols are shown weeping. In the twelfth scene, the Saint appears in the midst of a blazing furnace, with his hands raised toward heaven, praying like Christ. Thus the icon found on Rhodes depicts a whole series of torments in twelve scenes.
The Saint is revealed as a great Saint, possessing great boldness before Christ, because he suffered and shed his blood for us. Therefore, if we put into practice the saying of John Chrysostom, “The commemoration of a Saint means the imitation of that Saint,” let us imitate at least something in him. Let us not waste fifty drachmas on a ring-shaped loaf and bring it here. Such things by themselves are absurd. Along with them, let us bring our sins and our petitions, and ask him to help us imitate him in our own lives. And through the lantern he held, may he guide us also toward the life to come, in which I pray that all the world, and we ourselves, may abide. Among the other events presented by the Church, she also presents a remarkable person in matters of faith: the Prophet Elijah.
I believe that our faithful do not know as much as they should about this person. So I shall take this opportunity to say a few words about this remarkable figure. Our Church has summed up the whole mystery of the Prophet Elijah in his dismissal hymn, though even those who bear his name have not paid attention to it. It says: “The angel in the flesh.” Are there angels in the flesh? Do we not know that angels are bodiless? The angels are “ministering spirits sent forth to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation.” How, then, can he be in the flesh? And yet he is an angel in the flesh because he ministers in the service of God. For this reason he is called an angel, but an angel in the flesh. This means that he still bears his body. “The foundation of the prophets”—a prophetic foundation. “The second Forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ, the glorious Elijah.” He is the Forerunner of the Second Coming (Parousia) of Christ. He will return when Christ appears again. There are...
...three forerunners in the matters of our faith. Before Christ came into the world, John the Baptist was His Forerunner. Before Christ comes again into the world, Elijah will be His Forerunner. And before the human being enters heaven, Christ is his Forerunner, as Paul writes in Hebrews, in the final verse of the sixth chapter. My beloved, Elijah is alive. He did not die, and he is approximately three thousand years old. Nor is he the only one still living in the history of our faith. Two others are alive as well. One is Enoch, the seventh from Adam, who lived for 365 years and was translated. The other is John the Theologian, whose translation we celebrate, not his Dormition. A mystery surrounds this person. After Peter had heard what would happen to him when he grew old, he also asked Christ about his friend John: “But what about this man? Very well, You have told me that I will be crucified and what they will do to me. But what will happen to him, my friend?” Christ answered, “If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
If I want him to remain until I return, what concern is that of yours? You follow Me. And so the saying spread among the disciples that this brother would not die. Yet Christ did not say that, as the Gospel clearly explains. He said, “If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” Thus there are three persons whom God has at His disposal and who will play a great role. If our own days do not see these events, our souls will see them from wherever they are, when Elijah walks among us again and takes up the struggle against the Antichrist. And if you wish, read chapter twelve of the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, and see what he and Enoch will do and what they will suffer. If, as I say, we do not see these things bodily, we shall one day see them spiritually. My beloved, Elijah came into the world one thousand years before Christ.
He was born in a little village on the borders of Arabia. From the very first day, his parents were confronted with something strange: they saw the child in his swaddling clothes, surrounded by fire and burning. Then men clothed in white came and swaddled him in fire. His parents were terrified. “What is this?” they asked. So they went and consulted the elders, who interpreted it prophetically: this child would become a great man, a man of fire, a man who would go to extremes. He would make no compromises, but would stake everything. And indeed, that is how his life unfolded. Many people are troubled by the life of the Prophet Elijah, especially by his forceful deeds.
The Prophet Elijah called down fire from heaven twice and burned up two groups of fifty men who had come to arrest him—a hundred men in all. He also slew four hundred and fifty men with his own hand, making a total of five hundred and fifty. And people who have not studied the Scriptures ask, “How can I venerate a Saint who has the blood of 550 people on his hands, when God said, ‘You shall not murder,’ and when God is love?” All this sounds plausible, but that is not how things stand. The Old Testament contains a collection of books. There is a book of the Law, Leviticus, which says, “You shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not commit adultery,” and so forth. But there is also a book called Deuteronomy—the Law and the Second Law. In that book of Deuteronomy, it is written that a person is to be put to death. Killing is permitted and even commanded. It is commanded when someone is about to lead another person to a foreign god, to make him faithless, to turn him into an idolater. So in Deuteronomy there is another law from God, an exception to the law, “You shall not murder,” commanding that such a person be put to death. And indeed, at that time, Ahab and Jezebel...
Ahab and Jezebel, who were unbelievers in the days of Elijah, had four hundred and fifty prophets and another four hundred prophets who were leading the people into idolatry. The Prophet Elijah summoned them and said, “Gentlemen, if your god is the true God, come and let us put him to the test.” What did the test involve? “Let us build an altar, and you shall place upon it a whole burnt offering—an ox or a goat. But I do not want you to light the fire yourselves. Ask your god to send down fire. If your god truly exists and sends down fire, then I will join you and proclaim in my preaching that he is the true God. But if he sends no fire, and my God does—”
then you will be obliged to believe. We cannot confuse the people and lead them where they should not go.” They agreed. And so this took place on Mount Carmel. I do not know whether you have visited the Holy Land. Carmel rises above Haifa; it begins at Haifa, Palestine’s first port on the Mediterranean. About forty-five kilometers into Carmel, the altar built for this test between the Prophet Elijah and the false prophets of Baal remains to this day. They did indeed build an altar, place their burnt offering upon it, and pray all day long, but there was no voice,
“There was no response,” as Scripture says. Evening came, and he said to them, “Gentlemen, cry out louder. He is a god,” mocking them. “He is a god; perhaps he is talking, or perhaps he is asleep.” They even cut themselves until they bled, but nothing happened. Then Elijah prayed. His prayer was simple: “O true God, so that this people may know who the true God is, perform Your miracle today and send down fire to consume the burnt offering, together with their idolatry.” Before building his altar, the Prophet set up twelve stones, which remain there to this day. In fact, I was there just a few days ago. Those twelve stones are there in remembrance of the twelve tribes of Israel, in remembrance of the—
the twelve tribes of Israel—however you wish to understand that, whether or not they still exist. He placed his own burnt offering upon the altar, dug a large trench all around it, and poured twelve containers of water over it, so that it would seem impossible for the offering to catch fire and burn. Then fire descended from heaven and consumed it completely. All the people who were watching fell to their knees and cried, “He is God!” But the 450 prophets still did not accept Him. Despite the truth, despite the miracle, they did not accept Him. Nearby, about 150 meters away, there is a stream, a ravine, as we would call it. It is called the Brook Kishon, and it remains there to this day. And so, one man slaughtered them like lambs.
He slaughtered all four hundred and fifty of them there. How could one man in those days, without machine guns or anything of the sort, have slaughtered four hundred and fifty men unless God had been with him? God therefore strengthened him, and he slaughtered all four hundred and fifty there. Thus the Prophet carried out God’s command: those who lead people to foreign gods were to be put to death. In his surpassing zeal, Elijah applied, one might say, the exception to the commandment, “You shall not murder.” And so he killed them, yet he remains numbered among the saints—and we are scandalized. We make ourselves more compassionate than the Lover of mankind, holier than the Holy One, and more royal than the King. We do not read, and that is precisely why this matter scandalizes us.
Let me also take this opportunity to tell you that the Prophet Elijah is among us. Consider his appearance in Piraeus, which brought this matter to mind. He took a taxi, and the driver brought him to Kastella. He got out of the car to go to his own church, the Church of the Prophet Elijah. The door was already closed, and it was nighttime. Suddenly, the driver lost sight of the man. “Where is the priest? Where is the monk? Where is the priest? Where is the monk?” The priest was nowhere to be found, and neither was the monk. A moment later, the driver turned and saw a piece of paper on the seat where the prophet he had driven had been sitting. It read: “Repent, return to God, fast, and go to confession. Destruction is coming—coming upon humanity and upon Greece. Elijah the Prophet.” “Where is he?” some people now ask...
“Didn’t he write that? Where is the taxi driver? Why hasn’t the taxi driver come forward?” One day, there was a discussion at Air Force Headquarters. A friend of one of the officers recounted the incident, while another officer mocked it. At noon, the officer went home. His wife was a teacher. “Giorgos, we mustn’t treat as a joke what we’ve been discussing these past few days about the Prophet Elijah.” “Have you gone crazy too?” her husband said. “Giorgos, listen to me. I took a taxi home at noon, and the taxi driver asked me what I did for a living. I told him I was a teacher. ‘Take care, my poor woman,’ he said to her. ‘Take care—make sure you teach the children what they ought to know. Teach them to go to Church; teach them to pray, to—’”
“to fast and exercise self-restraint.” “What are you telling me?” “Take heed of the taxi you are sitting in. I was the one who drove Elijah—the Prophet Elijah. Take heed; woe to us!” Mr. George froze. In other words, the prophecy is drawing near and touching our own times. There is a photograph of the Prophet Elijah. He is a living person. Let us not be deceived. He is a person who will play a role in the decisive events. I think, judging by the course of time, that we will not live to see them in our lifetime. Our souls, however, will see these things when the Prophet Elijah receives the command to walk among us once again. Yes, as I remind you of this and present it to you on the occasion of his feast, let me also say more generally: despite our wickedness, despite our indifference, despite our unbelief, despite our depravity,
Although the second sign was reviled, and they even buried him, nevertheless God’s plan is being fulfilled. They will vehemently reject these things, because when Elijah appears on the scene—see what is written. These are sacred words. Let those who read look in the 107 volumes of the Patrologia in the Library of Athens, where a Roman eyewitness writes. What will happen when Elijah appears on the scene? “Those who have committed the deeds of Sodom and Gomorrah he will utterly burn with fire. But the wicked priests he will drive out of the sanctuary, and he will restore virtuous priests in their place.” Today we have Sodom and Gomorrah, and even among their descendants we still have Sodom and Gomorrah. “Those who have committed the deeds of Sodom and Gomorrah he will utterly burn with fire. But the wicked priests he will drive out of the sanctuary, and he will restore virtuous priests in their place.”
Our Christ said it, but we do not read it: “Elijah is indeed coming, and he will restore all things.” When Elijah comes, he will fulfill that word. No chariots will be needed, no hydrogen bombs, no Sputniks—nothing at all—when Elijah undertakes this mission. You may be English in your homeland, Russian in yours, American in yours, or Bulgarian in yours. Fire will come forth from his mouth when Elijah comes. Wars will cease; conflicts will cease. Every scoundrel will be put in his place. He is a great figure, and he is to carry out a great mission. I tell you, neither those who chant nor those who read...
We need to understand this person—a saint who killed: where he stands, where he comes from, what purpose he serves, and what this is all about. We have a holy God who takes everything into account and, in His providence, arranges whatever is best for us. But, of course, it also depends on us, because each person must choose metanoia—repentance.
Seven years earlier, he delivered a threatening letter to a king by means of a bird, hoping to save him from his evil path. Elijah, then, is alive, and he will remain alive until he comes again...
Thank you very much. On the third day, he will have lain unburied for three days together with Enoch, as it says in the eleventh chapter of the Apocalypse. Then he will rise and go to his appointed place. His mission will be complete. May his blessings be with the whole world and with us. Amen.

Συζωή αφή και πέραν του τάφου άλλους ανθρώπους στο πέρασμά μας; Αν λοιπόν κάνει ένας μία σύγχρονη αναζήτηση, θα πρέπει να βρει ότι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί, όταν έζησαν στον κόσμο τούτον, πρόσεξαν τον Κύριο εδώ, τον Χριστό. Και όσους ανθρώπους σφραγίσει ο Χριστός με τη δικιά Του τη σφραγίδα, αυτοί έχουνε αντίκρισμα στην αιωνιότητα. Δεν μπορούμε εμείς να τους αμφισβητήσουμε τη ζωή, διότι εμμέσως με τις εκδηλώσεις μας τους παραδεχόμεθα, αλλά είμεθα ανακόλουθοι. Πήγαινε στην Αγία αυτή. Εσύ για πού πηγαίνεις;
Εν προκειμένω αγίασε ο Άγιος, σαν παράδειγμά μας σήμερα ο Φανούριος, ένα παράδειγμα της αρετής. Επέτυχε τίποτα άλλο; Έκαμε τίποτα άλλο από ό,τι ήτο υποχρεωμένος να κάνει, εφόσον ήρθε στον κόσμο και πίστεψε στον Χριστό; Ο Χριστός εσταυρώθη για να γίνουν άγιοι οι άνθρωποι. Θα έκαμε τίποτα άλλο; Θα έκαμε τίποτα άλλο; Αν εμείς αγιάσουμε, θα κάνουμε τίποτα άλλο από ό,τι είμεθα προορισμένοι να κάνουμε; Αν μία πορτοκαλέα κάνει πορτοκάλια, να πω ένα απλό παράδειγμα, πρέπει να τη χειροκροτήσουμε, διότι κάνει αυτό που είναι η αποστολή της να κάνει; Ο άνθρωπος, ερχόμενος στον κόσμο, προορισμό έχει να αγιάσει. Αν δεν αγιάσει, καλύτερα να μην έρθει στον κόσμο. Τι να έρθει; Να φάει τα αγαθά, τα ψάρια και τα μοσχάρια του Θεού;
Τις μελιτζάνες και τις μπάμιες; Κάνει αστεία; Έχει έναν ανώτερο προορισμό ο άνθρωπος. Έχει να θεωθεί, να γίνει θεός μικρός. Άγιοι γίνεσθε, θεοί γίνεσθε. Αυτή είναι η αλήθεια. Και εντούτοις, εφόσον εμείς, εμμέσως λέγω, με κεριά, με πίτες, με τάματα, με, με, με, αναγνωρίζουμε την αγιότητα ενός προσώπου του Θεού, εντούτοις δε θέλουμε να τον μιμηθούμε καν. Να, μεθαύριο, σε λίγες μέρες, θα εορτάσουμε τον Τίμιο Πρόδρομο. Καλά, καλός ο Αγιάννης, αλλά τη ζωή του εγώ δεν την κάνω. Ούτε εγκράτεια, ούτε παρθενία, ούτε νηστεία, τίποτα. Αγνοώντας όλα αυτά. Στο τι, είπατε, τον ανέδειξε, ρε; Που δε σου δίνει δυο σκαμπίλια; Αλλά είσαι ανακόλουθος όμως άνθρωπος. Και ό,τι παρεμφερές λοιπόν πρέπει να πρυτανεύει σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις. Πού πηγαίνω τώρα;
