Summary
The lecture presents the Theotokos as uniquely honored after God and as present in the divine plan from the beginning of creation. Jacob's ladder symbolizes the Virgin through whom God descended, while Christ raises humanity toward communion with God. Isaiah's virgin-birth prophecy and Ezekiel's closed gate are interpreted as witnesses to Christ's miraculous birth and the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos.

I do not know whether you have ever seriously reflected on the person of the Most Holy Theotokos.
It is true that all Christians fulfill what our Most Holy Theotokos said in the hill country of Judah: “For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” Wherever there are Orthodox Christians, when a feast of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated, they will be present if possible—bodily, or at least in spirit. Apart from a few, sadly, there is hardly anyone who does not honor and revere the person of the Most Holy Theotokos and hold her in the highest regard. After God comes the Most Holy Theotokos.
The person of the Most Holy Theotokos, then, is not, as I say, an ordinary person. After God, she is a unique, new person. Many people consider, ponder, study, and read about when the Most Holy Theotokos first appears on the scene. Do you know when she first appears? The natural human answer, of course, is: from the time her mother and father brought her into being. Yet that is not when her story begins. Texts, sayings, prophecies, images, and symbols concerning the Most Holy Theotokos have existed from the foundation of the world. She is not an ordinary human being whose story begins on the day she is born and ends on the day she dies.
Her story extends beyond that and reaches much further back. If someone wishes to search within the things of faith and ask when mention is first made of the Most Holy Theotokos whose feast we celebrate, the answer is this: from the time there were two human beings, Adam and Eve, together with the devil and God. From that time the Theotokos is already on the scene; from that time her person is spoken of and remembered. If you open the Old Testament and go specifically to Genesis, chapter 3, verse 15, you will find there a woman whom God sets against Satan, and through the seed of this woman He threatens Satan because of the harm Satan had done. He says: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel.” Do you know what these words are called in theological language? The Protoevangelium—the First Gospel. The First Gospel is not Matthew, followed by Mark, Luke, and John. The First Gospel is the first good tidings God proclaimed to Satan after the harm he had done by leading Eve astray.
Eve and Satan together also led Adam astray. It is then, and from that time onward, that the Most Holy Theotokos is spoken of. God says, “The seed of the woman, Satan, will crush your head.” Those of you who were here last night will remember that, in another part of our subject, we pointed out that a woman does not possess seed; the seed belongs to the man. The woman receives the seed and gives birth to what has been sown. The man begets. Abraham, as we said, begot Isaac; Isaac begot Jacob; Jacob begot his children. Men beget, and women give birth. Yet here God speaks of the woman’s seed: a birth contrary to the ordinary order, a conception contrary to the ordinary order, because Christ was born neither by the will of man nor by the will of woman, but of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. It happens in a wondrous way, just as basil takes root from a cutting and flour is brought to life and becomes leaven.
In precisely this way, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, Christ was conceived in the womb of the Theotokos. He was not conceived from man’s seed, because then He would have been an ordinary man—“common” in the Greek spelling, with omicron-iota. He would not have been the “new” man, spelled with alpha-iota, and the Savior of sinners. He would have been a man who himself needed healing, as we might say. That woman whom Christ our God pointed out to Satan is the Most Holy Theotokos. Eve thought that she herself would be the woman who would bear the avenger who would crush the serpent’s head. That is why she named her first child Cain. Cain means “acquisition”: “I have acquired.” But what she had acquired was not the one foretold. It was another woman.
That woman of whom God spoke in Eden would come 5,508 years later. If, then, we take hold of this person called the Theotokos and trace her roots, we will find that they reach all the way into Eden. Her story begins there. This church does not have a dome, so I cannot show you this directly. Nor is it decorated throughout with Byzantine iconography. But if you enter a church painted in the Byzantine tradition and having a dome, you will see the following, and there you will find the Most Holy Theotokos. At the very top you will see Christ Pantocrator, who holds all things. Below Him is a band, a circle containing Angels; below that, another circle containing Prophets; and further down, another circle with the four Evangelists at its four corners. In the first circle of Angels, the first circle after the Pantocrator, are the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Forerunner. What are they doing there? Both the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Forerunner have their place within God’s plan. That is why we Orthodox must know that four persons and one symbol stand before the course of history. As I said earlier, everyone’s history begins on the day they are born and ends on the day they die. But for our Most Holy Theotokos and our Christ—
—for the Holy Spirit, the Honorable Forerunner, and the Precious Cross, there is a history that precedes their appearance. If only I had the time to reveal to you the types, prophecies, and images that speak of these four persons and of the Precious Cross. For the Precious Cross belongs to the whole work of salvation; it is among the means through which humanity is saved. That is why it too has a prehistory. As I say, much time would be needed to unfold all these things. But tonight, on the occasion of the feast of our Most Holy Theotokos, I shall present a few types, symbols, and prophecies that speak of her person, beginning in Paradise with the first one I showed you, which—
—says that from the seed of the woman will be born the One who will crush the serpent’s head. The Apostle Paul had this event in mind when he wrote to the Galatians. In chapter 4 in particular, he refers to this very matter and says that the fullness of time had come. From when is that time measured? From creation, from the moment God spoke those words. “God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.” He does not say, “born of a man.” “Born of a woman, born under the Law,” and so forth, “to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons.” That we might receive adoption. Our supposedly learned and enlightened people are wrong when they say that all human beings are children of God. They are not children of God—
—after the Fall. Before the Fall they are children of God; after the Fall they are not children of God but creatures fashioned by God. They become children of God if they receive Christ. “As many as received Jesus—as many as received Him—to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” This is what it means “that we might receive adoption.” The Son came so that we might accept Him, believe in Him, receive Him, become His brothers and sisters through Baptism, and become partakers of His Body and Blood. Then, by extension, we too become children of God. Many of us should not be saying the Lord’s Prayer. For suppose that, as we are solemnly standing there and saying, “Our Father, who art in Heaven,” we suddenly hear a voice from above saying to us, “On what grounds do you call Me Father, you blockhead? On what grounds do you call Me your Father?”
If Christ is not your brother, then God is not your Father. Christ must be my brother by grace so that, by extension, God may be my Father by grace. God has one Son by nature: Christ. We are fellow heirs with Jesus by His grace. This, then, is the meaning of “that we might receive adoption.” The promise God made in Eden when He threatened Satan was fulfilled on the day of Christ’s birth. As I say, the Apostle Paul defines this doctrinally in Galatians 4:4. The Most Holy Theotokos, then, has been on the scene from that time. This is why, among those Angels in the dome, you will see the Most Holy Theotokos on one side and the Honorable Forerunner on the other. In other words, within the mind of God and within God’s plan there are not only the Angels, but also the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Forerunner. For I do not know whether you are aware...
We have foreknowledge concerning the Forerunner. Christ said, “This is he of whom it is written”—of whom the Prophet writes—“Behold, I send My angel before Your face.” “For this is he of whom it is written,” He says: it is written that I shall send My angel before Your face. He calls him an angel because of his ministry, not because he was an angel by nature. No, he had a body. Just as a messenger is called an angel, he brought a message to the human race: that the Son of God would become the Son of the Virgin. “He who comes after me has come to be before me.” The God who comes after me existed before me, because He is also God. He is not only the son of Mary; He is also the Son of God. Thus you will see—
—the Honorable Forerunner on one side and the Most Holy Theotokos on the other, among the Angels. From that time, then, the person of the Theotokos is present. If we now wish to trace her in chronological order, so to speak, through other types and events, we will find her symbolized by Jacob’s Ladder. You will remember that Jacob fled from his father and from Esau because he had taken the birthright from him. That place still exists today. It is on the left-hand side before one reaches Ramallah. I do not know whether you have visited the Holy Land and can follow what I am describing. There, when Jacob lay down one night and used a stone for his pillow, he saw a ladder rising from earth to Heaven, with Angels ascending and descending upon it.
It was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos, through whom God descended, and through Christ we ascend so that we may become gods by grace. As I told you on another evening, there is a movement back and forth: the Most Holy Theotokos brings Christ down here, and Christ raises us up there. You see the Most Holy Theotokos on one side and Christ on the other. The Most Holy Theotokos brought Christ down to us, and Christ raises us up to God. The Son of God became the Son of Man so that, through the Son of Man, we might become children of God. There is no other way. If someone desires that his soul should one day go to God, he must take care to come to know the Son of God, Christ, who has a particular way of salvation. This teaching is found specifically in the Orthodox Church.
That ladder, then, through which He descended, is the Virgin, through whom God came down; and through Him we ascend and return to the heights. The Most Holy Theotokos is also present in other types. For example, about fifteen hundred years before Christ, Moses appeared on the scene. As you know, Moses led the people through the wilderness for forty years. Throughout those forty years God fed them with something resembling trahana or Chilean saltpeter, which was called manna. They ground it in a mortar and made it into food—bread, cakes, or anything else a person could imagine. Suppose, for example, that today I wanted a cucumber-and-tomato salad. That was what I desired, but in the wilderness I could not obtain it.
Yet what I ate would have that taste. If someone wanted fish, for example, the manna gave him the taste of fish; if he wanted meat or a sweet pastry, it gave him whatever taste he desired. God fed His pampered child, the Hebrew people, there in the wilderness for forty whole years. He had also given them a specific command. This manna fell every morning like dew, and as soon as the sun rose, it disappeared. God commanded them to gather a fixed amount—about two kilograms, enough for each person to eat. If there were five people in the family, they gathered ten kilograms. If there were four, they gathered eight; I am simply giving an example. In those days they called the measure an omer. The manna did not fall on the Sabbath, which was a day of rest.
God’s workshops did not operate on the Sabbath; the manna did not fall. So He required them to gather it on Friday and keep enough for the Sabbath as well. This is why Friday is called Paraskevi, the Day of Preparation. Strictly speaking, it ought to be called the sixth day, not the Day of Preparation. Monday is called the second day because it is the second day, though we have turned it into the first. We have left nothing in its proper place. The first day is the Lord’s Day, Sunday. The next day is called the second, then the third, the fourth, and the fifth; so the following day ought to be the sixth, not Paraskevi. You may ask, “Why, then, is it called the Day of Preparation?” Because on that day they prepared and made everything ready, since the Sabbath was a day of rest.
Today we leave nothing in its proper place. We go away on Friday morning and return on Tuesday morning, without ever entering a church. We trample over everything—Sundays, feast days, and all the rest.
If there even is a church there. To this day, the Jews observe their law, and the Muslims observe theirs. Only we Europeans have become renegades in this regard. And what is the result? God had given Moses a command there. He told him to gather some of the manna, place it in a jar, and put it inside the Tabernacle of Witness, so that it would remain there and future generations could see what God had used to feed the people for forty years. Moses did indeed gather manna and place it there, and it remained in the Tabernacle of Witness. Within that Tabernacle there were also other types of the Most Holy Theotokos.
For example, there were the tablets of the Law, which Moses received on Mount Horeb, on Sinai, the mountain trodden by God. That mountain still exists today, as does the very place where he received the tablets. The tablets were a type of the Most Holy Theotokos: the Word (Logos) of God was written upon tablets of stone, while the Word (Logos) of God became incarnate in the Virgin Mary. This was a type. Within the Tabernacle of Witness there was also Aaron’s rod that budded. The tree from which it was cut still exists today on Sinai, behind the church of Saint Catherine, together with the bush that burned yet was not consumed. That bush is the Most Holy Theotokos—it is a type of her, for she bore God and was not consumed.
And the Most Holy Theotokos received the fire of the Godhead and was not consumed. Both of these are there. Inside the Tabernacle of Testimony was also Aaron’s rod that budded: though it was a dry staff, it blossomed. In the same way, the Most Holy Theotokos was a Virgin, yet she gave birth. All these are types of the Theotokos. Further inside there was something else as well: the golden censer and a seven-branched lampstand, all of which were types of the Most Holy Theotokos. Even to this day, the censer bears the image of the Most Holy Theotokos. Of course, we do not know these things, and that is why we do not respond as we should when the priest, bishop, or deacon censes us.
While we are on the subject, let me explain one of the types contained in the censer for those who do not know. When you see the censer—the thymiato, as we call it in everyday speech—held by the priest, you see that it is suspended from three chains. These three chains represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who uphold the whole body.
And the lower part—is it not like a hollow, like a basin or vessel? That lower part of the censer is the Most Holy Theotokos. The burning coal within it is Christ. Isaiah also saw the burning coal, as we read in the sixth chapter of his book. The incense is the Holy Spirit. The twelve bells above are the twelve Apostles. So the priest holds the censer, swings it, and shows it to you. Do you see this? Here are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; here are the Most Holy Theotokos, the Holy Spirit, and Christ. Do you see it? The whole dogma of the faith is there. I believe it; do you believe it? I believe it; do you believe it? Again and again: I believe it; do you believe it? And so you bow—some make the sign of the Cross.
A bow. Yes, I believe. I believe in the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit; I honor the Most Holy Theotokos and the Apostles—everything. There is nothing here that does not speak. The stones speak, the wood speaks, and the lamps speak. Everything teaches and rightly reminds us, so that we do not lose our way or our bearings. We pass through this life only once, and when the ticket is issued for our departure, it is one-way only—one-way, with no return. You cannot say, as our young men and women do, “If things do not work out, I will come back; wait for me.” Once you have gone, you do not return. One day you will come to be judged, and woe to you if you have not used this brief time carefully, so as to gain that long, eternal, unfathomable age. And so, here too we see the—
type of the Most Holy Theotokos: the jar that bore the manna. The Most Holy Theotokos is that jar. There, an earthen jar held heavenly manna within it; here, an earthen vessel—the Virgin’s human nature—holds within herself the true heavenly Manna, Christ. That jar was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. And when our Most Holy Theotokos entered the Temple as a three-year-old child, her parents brought her because they had vowed to dedicate her. Saint Anna had prayed, “Give me a child, so that this reproach may be taken from me, so that they may no longer consider me barren and under a curse.” Let certain women and men hear this as well—those who deliberately make themselves accursed in the eyes of God. They cast away their children; they do not want to bring human beings into the world, because they doubt. “They believe,” people say, “but…”
You believe? Then what is this “but”? “I am poor.” Then you do not believe. Does God need your money? Is He unable to provide for you? Is God unable? You do not believe in God as almighty, as provident, as all that He is. You do not believe in Him. Do not deceive yourself by saying that you believe. You do not believe; you believe nothing. Woe to you if your faith is of such a kind that your deeds prove otherwise. Woe to you. At this point, then, I say that—
in that Tabernacle of Testimony there was also the jar of manna, and it was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. And when our Most Holy Theotokos entered the Temple, they placed her there, where she remained for eleven years and was fed by an angel. She came out when she had reached childbearing age. A woman is capable of bearing children from the day her monthly cycle begins. This is a sign that she has matured: the ovum descends into the womb and awaits fertilization. But once she began to have a flow of blood, she could no longer remain in the Temple. Let certain most impious women hear this as well. Not even in the narthex, because the Temple is not divided into separate degrees of holiness.
The Temple was consecrated, and at its furthest point it was sealed with holy chrism. The whole place is holy. Are you having your monthly cycle? Remain at home for four, five, or six days. Do not light the vigil lamp, touch an icon, or offer incense. Is there a wedding? Do not go. A betrothal? Do not go. A funeral? Remain outside and weep there—
if you do not want to find yourself in grave trouble with God. Do not listen to anyone else; this is how matters stand. From the day her flow of blood began, then, they brought her out from there. She was now of childbearing age, and they placed her under Joseph’s protection. Joseph was appointed as her guardian, not as a bridegroom. An elder and a little girl of thirteen or fourteen—would he take her as his wife? That is what others—the unbelievers, the Protestants, and the rest—want to claim.
He was her guardian, because if she had appeared in public pregnant and without a husband, she would have had to be stoned. For this reason God deceived them and appointed this man, venerable in every respect, so that outwardly they would appear to be a couple, strange though it might seem: a girl of thirteen and a man of seventy.
Still, there was a man beside her. And so Satan swallowed the bait and suffered defeat. There was a special reason for it. I say, while she was there, everything spoke of the Annunciation—Annunciation, Annunciation, Annunciation. If you read Psalm 44, you will find there a reference to the entry of our Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple. David, writing 1,050 years before Christ, even sees her entering, escorted by other young virgins. Do you know how it happened? When Saint Anna had said, “Give me a child, and I will dedicate the child to the Temple”—
whether a girl or a boy—she kept the child for one, two, three years. She nursed her at her breast, of course, until she was able to eat something on her own; then she went and dedicated her, leaving her in the Temple. Do you know what she did? She gathered other young Jewish girls carrying lighted candles, and Saint Anna herself had taught them suitable songs.
They led her to the Temple with children’s songs and left her there. They were concerned about whether the little girl would stay, and how Mary could possibly remain there among grown people. Yet instead of seeing her run to cling to her mother’s skirt, wanting to follow her and crying, they saw her remain there as though nothing unusual had happened—as though she were in her own room, in her own home. For God had blessed her to remain there and be preserved. Satan remembered that from the woman’s seed would be born the One who would crush his head. He remembered it and understood that something terrible awaited him: a Virgin would give birth. He gathered this from the context.
Later he also read the Prophet Isaiah, chapter 7, verse 14, written 850 years before Christ: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” And he said to himself, “Ah, He has not forgotten; He still remembers.” Of course, three and a half or four thousand years had passed—even more, perhaps four and a half thousand—and there had been no sign or outline of anything. But Satan saw it again, and he took care that no woman should remain a virgin. When Christ came, corruption was greater than it is today. Today you may find five percent who are virgins, and in the provinces especially, perhaps fifteen, twenty, thirty, or even forty percent in certain places. In coastal regions, where there is the sea, there is great corruption—corruption advancing at a gallop. But in the days of Christ, this is why God—
placed her in the Holy of Holies, far from Satan, where an angel fed her throughout those eleven years. Then He concealed her under the guardianship of the elder Joseph, making it appear that she was married. That is why she escaped Satan’s notice. “They reasoned thus and were deceived.” Saint Ignatius the God-bearer has a beautiful passage on this, for those who read him. He sets Satan before him, strips all his pretensions away, and challenges him: “You think yourself clever? What did you understand? Everything escaped you. You understood nothing of what God was doing.” For Christ kept Satan guessing all the way to the Cross. Christ was not only God; He was also man. And whenever Satan saw the man, he wondered: “If He is God, how can He fast? If He is God, how can He weep? If He is God, how can He ask questions? If He is…”
Then again He eats, again He sleeps, again He asks questions, and so on. In this way Christ led him on, even as far as Great and Holy Thursday, when Christ said, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death.” Then Satan drew his conclusion: “If He were God, how could His soul be sorrowful?” So he raised Him upon the Cross as a righteous man; he did not raise Him up knowing Him to be God. But when he had raised Him upon the Cross and began to see the earthquake—an earthquake he himself had not caused—and the rocks splitting and darkness falling, none of which he had caused, he cried, “Come down! Come down!” Christ answered, “I am not coming down. Now I will crush your head—now—and we shall settle matters afterward.” These are things an Orthodox Christian should know, so as to marvel at the wisdom of God and glorify Him for what He has done. God kept her there, then, for as long as was necessary, and afterward entrusted her to Joseph’s care.
There is also another prophecy and image in the forty-fourth chapter of Ezekiel. If you have the Old Testament and read that chapter, you will find there the teaching of the perpetual virginity of our Most Holy Theotokos. Whenever there is a feast of our Most Holy Theotokos, these prophecies are read at Vespers. And this prophecy of Ezekiel is always among them. He presents her as a closed door, a shut gate. If you see the Prophet Ezekiel depicted in Byzantine iconography, you will find him with a door or gate behind him. This signifies the virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos. For, as you know, many people stumble over the virginity of the Theotokos.
They stumble over it. They cannot understand it or even follow the teaching; indeed, they want to blaspheme against it, and we hear many mocking remarks. But there you will see Ezekiel bearing a door. Do you know what the passage says? “This gate shall be shut and shall remain shut, because through it God entered and came forth, and it remained shut.” The holy Fathers bring forward this passage as speaking of the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos. Of course, these things do not stand according to ordinary human logic, because they are all beyond reason. “I behold a strange and wondrous Mystery: the cave is heaven; the Virgin, the throne of the Cherubim.” How can a human being comprehend these things? He cannot. Another type used by our Church in a hymn at Vespers—I know where it is found; it is in a doxastikon—is the Red Sea as a type of the perpetual virginity of our Most Holy Theotokos.
Israel passed through!
Israel passed through it, and it remained untrodden; Emmanuel passed through the Most Holy Theotokos, and she remained inviolate. Indeed, if I remember correctly—the chanters may correct me—the hymn says, “In the Red Sea the image of the unwedded Bride was once prefigured.” There, at the Red Sea, it says. Then it continues: “There Moses was the divider of the waters; here Gabriel was the minister of the miracle.” There Israel passed through and the sea remained untrodden; here Emmanuel passed through and the Virgin remained inviolate. Of course, we seek explanations based on ordinary human logic, so to speak, but these things are beyond reason.
Very well. There is also another incident in the Book of Judges concerning the virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos and the role she was to play. You will remember it from the canon of the Akathist Hymn, where she is described as “the dew-covered fleece that Gideon foresaw.” Gideon received a visit from an angel from heaven. At the time of this visit, he was threshing grain on the threshing floor with his animals, with his oxen. The angel said to him, “Stop! Leave all this, get ready, and gather a small number of men, because you are to be commander-in-chief and undertake a military campaign.” Gideon nearly tore his hair out. “What are you saying?” he asked. “Are you saying this to me?” “Yes, to you.” “I am to summon men, take command, wage war, and liberate Israel? Me? And you...”
“What are you?” he asked. “I do not know; you appear radiant, but I do not know who you are.” “I am an angel sent from heaven.” “Good heavens!” Gideon was beside himself. “Stop what you are doing,” the angel told him. “You are going to carry out this task.” So Gideon stood there, thought about it, and said, “If you work a miracle for me, then I will follow you and believe that you truly have been sent by God and that this mission has been entrusted to me. We will clear the threshing floor and place a fleece of wool in its midst.” Those of you from rural areas will understand. When a ewe is shorn, a whole fleece of wool comes away. “We will place it,” he said, “in the middle of the threshing floor. If, in the morning, the fleece is wet while the entire threshing floor is dry, then I will believe that God truly sent you.”
“I am His messenger.” And so they did it. In the morning, the fleece was wet; Gideon wrung enough water from it to fill a basin. Then he asked the angel to do the opposite: that the threshing floor should be wet that night while the fleece remained dry. And indeed, this too was done. Afterward, strengthened by God, Gideon assembled an army, undertook the campaign, won the victory, and so forth. The hymnographer of the Akathist Hymn sees this as a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. He calls her “the dew-covered fleece that Gideon foresaw.” The dryness was the sin that filled the world. The only person who brought consolation to God the Father was the Most Holy Mother, whom He beheld 5,500 years before she was to appear upon the stage of history.
Upon the Most Holy Theotokos alone, so to speak, did His soul find rest. And truly, when she appeared upon the stage of history, everything was set right. She brought the Savior; she brought the Redeemer; joy came, and the curse disappeared. “Rejoice, for through you joy will shine forth; rejoice, for through you the curse will cease.” The events correspond to one another. But we, of course, know almost nothing about these matters. If only a person knew how to interpret the Akathist Hymn, which is entirely dogmatic from its very first words—“The chief angel was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, Rejoice”—he would see all these things within it: how Eve brought everything down and how the new Eve raised it up again; how Adam brought everything down and how the new Adam restored it.
Do you imagine that the Most Holy Theotokos has been placed here by chance? No. She and Christ occupy the places of Eve and Adam, who shut us outside and placed the barrier between us and God. In answer to their disobedience, these two came and offered obedience. She said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the Son said, “Behold, Father, I desire to do Your will.” Through them the passage was opened for us—the doorway called the Beautiful Gate. It is called the Beautiful Gate because only through here does a person pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. He does not enter from the coffeehouse, from someone’s embrace, from the cinema, from television, or from anywhere else. He may become the finest person in the world, but if he does not become a Christian—if he is not baptized, does not receive Holy Communion, does not confess, and does not pass this way—he will remain outside the bridal chamber. So this fleece was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. There is another type as well—I am merely gathering a few examples as they come to mind; how could they all emerge in perfect order?—which was written by Isaiah 850 years before Christ.
In chapter 19, verse 1, Isaiah presents her as a light cloud carrying God, who is above all, into Egypt. He sees her flight into Egypt. He calls the Most Holy Theotokos a light cloud bearing God above all, bearing Christ our God into Egypt. Isaiah also writes that when she carries God into Egypt, “the handmade idols of Egypt shall be shaken.” All the idols of the Egyptians would fall. Of course, what entered Egypt was a young girl, an old man, perhaps a donkey or a camel, and a Child in her arms. But that Child was no ordinary child; He was the Child. And when He arrived, all the idols collapsed. Behind idols there is a devil, not God.
The idols of the Egyptians fell. Indeed, a great dispute arose among the people at that time. Because there was rivalry between them, each group thought the other had destroyed the objects it venerated, and one might say that war broke out. They went to the oracles to ask what had happened, but the oracles had fallen silent. No devil spoke to tell them that a young girl had arrived with a Child in her arms and had shattered everything there. Now, I have shown you the censer and told you that it represents the Most Holy Theotokos. At this very moment, as I speak, the Most Holy Theotokos is upon the Holy Altar. The tabernacle that contains Christ represents her. Is not the Body and Blood of Christ kept upon the Holy Altar? It has been reserved there since Holy Thursday.
It was reserved on Holy Thursday last year for the Church’s emergencies. Suppose there is an unexpected death. Where will you find the priest, and where will you find a Divine Liturgy, so that he may hurry to give the dying person his provisions for the journey, his ticket, “for the remission of sins and eternal life”? The priest comes and takes the Holy Gifts from the tabernacle. The Body and Blood are kept there. If they have not been consumed for emergencies during the year, the priest consumes them on that day and places new bread there. He divides it into portions, dries it, arranges it properly, and keeps it ready. So the tabernacle upon the Holy Altar represents the Most Holy Theotokos. Among the women tonight, I saw that some of you brought offerings here.
Some of you took the trouble to prepare a prosphoron yourselves. Buying it from the market is wrong; do not buy it there. The marketplace cannot provide what is to become the Body and Blood of Christ. Today you have so many conveniences and lack no modern comfort or appliance. You have vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, ice-cream makers, grills, and everything imaginable. Surely a sieve and a seal—which will never go out of fashion for all eternity—should also be kept at home, so that you, your descendants, and those after them may prepare a small prosphoron and bring it here. Should these things not be found in the home? Today you have driven this custom from your homes because it spoils your fingernails, yet you must return to it. If you desire the Church’s blessing, understand that Heaven does not accept such prosphora. Heaven does not accept the prosphora you bring from the bakery. Of course, there are some couples and some people who, because of their age, cannot prepare one.
It may be physically impossible for them to prepare even a small prosphoron. They should ask another devout woman, a young woman, or a man—for there are also men who bake prosphora—to prepare one for them to bring to the Church, if they wish to make an offering. The woman or young woman who prepares the prosphoron should know that she is portraying and assuming the role of Saint Anna. She is preparing an image of the Most Holy Theotokos. The prosphoron represents the Most Holy Theotokos whom we bring into the Church so that she may go to the Prothesis, to Bethlehem—the canopy above the Prothesis represents Bethlehem—and give birth to Christ. Christ then comes here to be crucified, for the bread to be changed into His Body and offered as food for many, for the remission of sins and eternal life. Is it not an honor for you to take the role of Saint Anna and prepare your own image of the Most Holy Theotokos?
There is no need to make the prosphoron so large that we have to break down the door to bring it inside. Make it small, about this size, with a little seal upon it, so that the priest can remove the portions and perform the sacred rite. We have lost this custom. Many times, if we buy a prosphoron from the bakery, we bring it here in one plastic bag inside another and hand it to the sacristan just as it is. There could be no greater irreverence, ignorance, or indifference. Heaven does not accept such things. God wants a person to take trouble and offer something of his own, so that he may receive his corresponding portion. I have simply mentioned a few things, because it is impossible to cover everything. I came intending to speak about something else, and I still have the rest of my subject to deliver.
On my way here, a certain woman became the reason I spoke about these things tonight. She reminded me that tomorrow we have another observance connected with the Most Holy Theotokos, and she asked me something about her. Then it came to my mind that honor is due to her above every man and woman, and that I had not been here on the fifteenth of the month to speak about her. So I felt I should say these few words tonight about one aspect of the subject, to remind you who this person is. After God, she stands above all. We Orthodox truly worship her; on the Holy Mountain they truly worship her. Whether they are going to sleep, rising, walking, making a promise, or doing anything else, it is all in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos: “If the Most Holy Theotokos wills,” “If the Most Holy Theotokos grants us another dawn,” “The Most Holy Theotokos first.” Of course, if we examine this from a strictly Orthodox perspective, that wording is not correct.
Worship belongs to God alone: “You shall worship Him, and Him alone shall you serve.” But what happens in this case? The glory, honor, veneration, and worship all pass on to her Son. If it were not for her Son, would the maiden of Nazareth possess this honor? He is the One who gave her this worth, who called her and made her a fragrance for all eternity, before whom Satan trembles. I do not know whether you realize this, but heretics hate the Most Holy Theotokos even more than they hate Christ. Do you know why? Because she enclosed God within human flesh—I do not know whether you understand what I mean. Satan says, “You mean to give birth to Him like this and deceive me?” Whom, then, does he hate? The Most Holy Theotokos. When we speak of a heretic here, we mean a person whom we believe to be spiritually misled.
Listen to a Protestant woman speaking about the Most Holy Theotokos and see how she speaks of her—as though she were talking about a woman next door: “a woman,” “a certain Mary.” But she is not merely a woman. She is the Woman. “Behold, the Virgin.” That definite article, “the,” marks her as unique. How can you tell me that she is merely “a woman”? She is the Woman. She is the Maiden. She is the Lady. How can you speak of her otherwise? She is not “a”; she is “the.” That word “the” sets her apart as unique. What does Christ say? “I am the light”—not simply a light, but the light, the one and only. “I am the way.” I am not merely a way, one road among others; I am the only way. “I am the life.”
I am not simply life; I am the life. Have you seen the bishop come out here holding the dikirion and trikirion? What does he say? “Look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vineyard which Your right hand has planted.” He says this because it comes from the Old Testament. The Church has taken it from the Old Testament and placed it in her worship. Our Church possesses nothing of her own; she has borrowed everything from the two denarii left to her in the parable of the Good Samaritan. “Take these two denarii,” he says, “and whatever more you spend—sweat, labor, and so forth—when I return, I will repay you.” Therefore, the Most Holy Theotokos is not merely a woman; she is the Woman.
Saint Athanasius the Great gives an answer. At what do our young women stumble—our malformed and miseducated young women and men? They mockingly ask, “Do you also believe in that lily shown beside the Most Holy Theotokos?” They ridicule the seedless conception. I should tell you that the lily does not exist in Byzantine iconography. It was added later by Roman Catholics, and any icon of the Annunciation that includes a lily has been influenced by them. Properly speaking, the Annunciation should not depict the angel holding a lily, because they accept the Immaculate Conception—that is, they teach not only the miraculous conception of Christ but also an immaculate conception of the Most Holy Theotokos herself. Thus we would have two such conceptions. This is wrong.
They have confused matters regarding Joseph’s marriage and all the rest. What applies among us? You should see the Archangel holding a scepter. I do not know whether anyone here is from Athens. Let him go outside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens and see a true icon of the Annunciation. What do we say? See how Orthodoxy gives its support: “Hear, O daughter, and see; incline your ear, and forget your people,” and so forth. Hear what I am going to tell you; look and see where I come from. I am not the apostate angel. The Akathist begins with its symbol and says, “The chief angel was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, Rejoice.” What does “chief angel” mean?
“I am not an apostate; I am not Satan, who went to the first Eve and led her astray. I am a chief angel, and see how I prove it to you. This scepter I hold comes from the royal court. I come from God; I am His messenger. Do not be afraid. Wait and hear what I have to say.” The apostate led the other woman astray because he did not come from heaven but from the earth. “The chief angel was sent from heaven.” The first angel, Satan, who went to the first Eve and led her astray, was the apostate angel. Put all these things together. Take what comes from the Old Testament, what comes from the New Testament, and what comes from Byzantine iconography, and then you will see how the matter truly stands. Saint Athanasius the Great therefore says, “From a merely human point of view, you cannot comprehend how she conceived.”
She conceived, gave birth, and remained a virgin. Saint Athanasius says, “Let me give you an example. You sit inside your conservatory, behind the glass. The sun comes through and warms you throughout the day, and in the evening it departs without breaking the glass. If the sun can do this, can the Sun of suns not do the same? What difficulty could there be for Him?” My beloved, do you know that the Most Holy Theotokos gave birth without pain? Do you know this? Read the sixty-sixth chapter of Isaiah and see what it says. Why did she not suffer pain when she gave birth? Because she conceived without pleasure and gave birth without birth pangs. She did not conceive through sensual pleasure, and therefore she did not give birth in anguish and pain. She conceived
without pleasure and gave birth without birth pangs. “Before the pain of childbirth came upon her, she escaped it and gave birth to a male child,” Isaiah wrote 850 years before Christ, in the final chapter of his prophecy. Those of you from Athens should look for a book which, by her grace, I was granted the opportunity to write, entitled The Son of God Becomes the Son of the Virgin. There you can see what the Fathers say, what our Church says, and how the matter of the Most Holy Theotokos truly stands. Why, it asks, did He have to be born of a Virgin? Because Satan led Eve astray while she was still a virgin, and she brought forth death. Mary too was a virgin when she conceived from the One who is good, and she brought forth life. When Eve
When Eve disobeyed, she had not yet come together with her husband. She was a virgin when she committed that act of disobedience, and she brought forth death. The Most Holy Theotokos was also a virgin; through the Angel, of course, she received the good tidings from the Good One, and she brought forth Life. “But I,” someone says, “if there is no man and woman, I do not believe it. I believe that a married couple has children. Children cannot be born without a married couple.” Are you serious? Do you really think you are reasoning soundly? Shake your head and listen to what you are saying! Can you tell me who Adam’s father was? Can you tell me who Eve’s mother was? If you tear everything down, believe nothing, and believe that you came from an ape, then go and eat dates with the ape.

Τότε που έκαναν γάμο ο Ιωσήφ και λοιπά, έχουν μπλέξει αυτοί οι άνθρωποι. Σε εμάς ισχύει — ποιο ισχύει; — να βλέπεις τον Αρχάγγελο με το σκήπτρο. το στύπτρο Δεν ξέρω αν είναι κανένας Αθηναίος εδώ πέρα. Να πάει στη Μητρόπολη των Αθηνών απ’ έξω να δει τον πραγματικό Ευαγγελισμό. Τι λέμε εμείς; Να δείτε πώς θα στηρίζει η Ορθοδοξία. «Άκουσον, θύγατερ, και ίδε και κλίνον το ους σου και επιλάθου του λαού σου» και λοιπά. Άκουσον τι θα σου πω και κοίταξε και ίδε πού θα έρχομαι. Εγώ δεν είμαι ο άγγελος αποστάτης. Έρχεται ο Ακάθιστος στο σύμβολο και λέει: «Άγγελος πρωτοστάτης ουρανόθεν επέμφθη ειπείν τη Θεοτόκω το Χαίρε». Τι πάει να πει πρωτοστάτης;
