Summary

After the feeding of the five thousand the crowd wanted to proclaim Christ king, so He dismissed them, sent the disciples across the lake by boat, and withdrew alone to the mountain to pray, teaching us to flee human praise and applause. Every person is a small boat tossed by storms, and while Christ remains outside the boat things go badly, but from the moment He is taken aboard the vessel immediately arrives at its harbor. Turning to the Dormition, the homily calls the day a second Great Friday with two empty tombs, that of God and that of the Mother of God, and urges that the Theotokos be imitated rather than merely petitioned in need, since she cannot dwell in a household given over to blasphemy and lawless living.

Today's Sunday continues the events of last Sunday. Last Sunday we had the miracle of the Five Thousand: our Christ fed twenty-five thousand people, and because the people were so pleased, they wanted to proclaim Him king, as another Evangelist tells us, namely the Evangelist John. Our Christ, in order to avoid all this applause and all these thank-yous and the rest of it, immediately broke up the crowd, sent His disciples away, gave them the command to get into the boat and cross the Sea of Tiberias, and He Himself went up the mountain to pray.

The Evangelist Mark says that from the place where He was praying on the mountain, He could see them down on the sea, tossed about by the waves. They ran into such rough weather, such a headwind, that — as another Evangelist tells us — they had made hardly any progress at all, right up until daybreak, the fourth watch, when Christ came to them walking on the sea. The fourth watch is three to six in the morning. Even though He saw them struggling, He left them exposed to that battle. And note this: they had not undertaken that voyage on their own. They were under obedience to Christ.

"Get in!"

"Off you go." So they set out with good reason, with a blessing, at His word, and they made that voyage. And yet that voyage, even though it was made at Christ's command, ran into such enormous difficulty. Humanly speaking, they could have turned back. They did not turn back. They paid no attention to the fact that they were struggling all night long. There is something here for us. There are many difficulties on the roads we travel. We ought to examine ourselves: am I under obedience? Is this thing I am doing, where I am meeting difficulty, what God wants? That is something a person must always examine.

It does not follow that because you are doing the right thing, you will not meet difficulty. That has nothing to do with it. On the contrary — when you do the right thing and go against the current, that is exactly when you will meet greater difficulty. But your job is to persevere. "But can I hold out? My patient endurance is running dry," says one person. At the proper time He will come and help you. Let us not tell God when He is to come and help us. He will come and help us at the proper time, when our faith has been tested and our patient endurance is almost exhausted. Then, in a fraction of a second, He will come and set matters right. What we have to examine in our own lives — because we will always have adversity —

is whether what we are doing is against the will of God or in accordance with the will of God. That is our business, and from that point on it is His business. The whole thing begins with the fact that Christ did not want the applause. That is something we still cannot get off our backs. It is planted under our skin: if we do something, if we say something, if we help somewhere, we want to find out what impression we made on others. We are waiting for someone to write about us somewhere, to talk about us somewhere, to post about us somewhere. This is not to our benefit. And if Christ avoided it — He, who was in no danger, but was giving us a lesson — what ought we to do?

We ought to avoid this thing. So there are two matters before us so far. First, Christ's flight, His refusal to accept the thanks and the applause of the world; and second, the obedience of the Apostles and then all the hardship that followed — and hardship is a pleasant thing when it comes from obedience to Christ. We are work-shy. We want everything easy, and yet — the road that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven always has obstacles on it. And if Christ tells you to go there and you meet difficulty, then when you do something on your own — out of ego, out of the flesh, out of self-interest, out of worldliness — what will you meet, and how will things turn out? So this, I say, is a fine lesson.

There is something else too: Christ may be slow in coming — and what does that mean? That He sees you and seems not to care. But if you consider that He does see you, then you draw strength from that. Whatever happens to you, however unjustified it seems, you will ask yourself and reason it out with yourself: does the Lord know that this is happening to me? And when you get the answer that He does know, then — let me stay put here; since He knows, He will certainly act when He needs to act, and if He needs to act, because many times God does not act. The solution is not always to our benefit in this world, and there are many matters

that will be resolved in that other world. Our concern is to examine whether God knows and whether we are under obedience to God. That is the issue. From there on, everything — whatever happens, however much the world calls it bad — will nevertheless be good and profitable for us. There is only one bad thing: sin. Everything else is only thought to be bad and is never really bad. So at the fourth watch, three to six in the morning, walking on the sea, Jesus reaches them. Listen how beautifully it puts it: they thought He was a ghost. In the middle of their toil, in the middle of being knocked about by the sea all night long, in the middle of their suffering — and now a ghost on top of it. They were terrified, they cried out, and He says, "Take courage, it is not a ghost, it is I."

And Peter, with his childlike soul, always the first to rush forward, said: "If it is You, Lord, let me come to You on the water." "Very well," He says, "come." And Peter climbs down and walks on the sea. Here is another miracle that we overlook. Very well — the sea obeys God, its Creator who made it, and the Creator walks on it. But a man, a sinful man, in the name of Jesus! In the name of Jesus everything happens. "Not only these miracles that I do," He says, "you will do greater works than these." And Peter stepped out onto the sea, and it received him, and he walked on the sea. A great lesson.

When a person holds fast to Christ, he can do anything. Even the things Christ does, and greater still. Our Christ's shadow did not raise the dead. Paul's shadow raised the dead, and Peter's shadow raised the dead. Now, as long as Peter is looking at Jesus and walking toward Him, the sea obeys. The elements are raging, the wind is ready to throw everything into an uproar. He turns, he takes his eyes off Christ now, and he sees the winds, he sees the waves. His heart failed him and he began to sink. Why? What happened to you? Did you take your eyes off Me? "I took my eyes off You and I began to go under." Let each of us take care, let all of us take care,

never to take our eyes off Christ. Because from the moment people take their eyes off Christ, Satan will bring them into a hard moment and they will begin to sink. And if they do not see it, God sees it. Many people who have lost both this life and the other — the temporal and the eternal — lost them because they took their eyes off Christ. They were not willing to set Christ as their goal and to walk straight ahead. Saint Isaac the Syrian — I do not know if you have read him — speaks about this road. It is so narrow and so serious that he pictures it as the edge of a razor. A man, a real man, he says, walks on the edge of a blade. Picture a razor, and now imagine walking on top of that razor, if such a thing were possible.

Even if you were an acrobat, you could not walk on it. That is to say, it allows no falling off, neither to the right nor to the left. A person who does not walk rightly — looking only at Christ, obeying Him, waiting for Him, walking toward Him — has already fallen, either to the right with logismoi, those intrusive thoughts that look righteous, or to the left with sinful and immoral deeds and thoughts. Only the one who walks rightly stands. So from the moment a person takes his mind, his gaze, off Christ, off the road he has to walk for eternity, he will certainly fall. Either he will fall to the right or he will fall to the left. Whether the engine goes off the rails to the right of the track or to the left is beside the point. The point is that it is a derailed

engine. That is exactly what happens to many people in their fears. Under the fear that he is drowning, down he goes. Yet if you had opened Peter's veins with a blade, you would have found the Sea of Tiberias inside rather than blood. He could have taken two strokes and grabbed hold of the gunwale again and climbed back up. He lost his nerve. No tough guy can stand on his own apart from Christ. Let him play the big man, let him say he is somebody, let him believe in nothing, let him blaspheme God and let him care nothing for God. When he is abandoned by God, abandoned by grace, then he understands that he is a nutshell; then he starts trembling like a reed; and if he really asks something of God, God will give it to him and he will be saved. This is exactly what happened to Peter. "Lord," he says, "save me."

And His answer: "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" And Christ seizes him by the hand, because He is always beside us, He is not far off. "For in Him we live and move and have our being" — that is what Paul said here on the Pnyx, to our forefathers. He is here, he says, among us; God is here, God is everywhere present. Is God a man, he says? Neither someone great nor someone small; whether you are an educated person or whatever standing you have. He is the almighty God who sees the details of a person's life, his falls and his collapses, when he stands and when he does not stand — and He pulled him up. And do you know what the Evangelist John says, which I mentioned the other day at the end of the homily? They then tried, from up in the boat, to take Christ on board, so that He would not go on foot.

And the boat was immediately found on the far side, across from Tiberias, at the harbour they had been heading for. In fact, in the morning there was a discussion about it: how is it that no boat came here, how did you get here, when did You come here, Teacher? Every person is a little boat, a fishing caique, a ship, and there are many storms and many dangers and many hardships in his life. When Christ is outside the boat, things go badly for the boat. From the moment Christ steps into the boat, things change. If merely attempting to take Him aboard was enough for the boat to be found there, how much more if they had actually taken Him in! Many of us suffer, we are tormented, we have lost our health, we have lost our sleep.

One took his own life, another was ruined, another went out of his mind, and so on. They were not willing to put Christ into their boat. They were not willing to put Christ at the helm of their lives. They went with their own cleverness, they went with their own knowledge, they went by pulling strings, they went by natural means and not by supernatural ones. There will always be difficulties. But what concerns a person, if he really wants to cross this stinking sea as painlessly as possible — because this life, again according to Saint Isaac the Syrian, is a foul sea, reeking on every side — if he wants to cross it, he will see to it that he puts Christ into his life. From the moment he puts Christ into his life, things change.

A person is comforted, he finds real content in his life, he begins to examine where he came from, why he came, and where he is going.

Everything falls into place, because in his case too this will be fulfilled: "to live is Christ, and to die is gain." At once he thinks: the Lord is my whole life. If I die today, what of it? If I die tomorrow, what of it? What do I gain? I gain nothing. But all this is taught by Christ alone. Christ gives meaning to a person's life, He gives it content, He gives him real and correct guidance, so that he is not tormented. As you have heard, and as we have said by way of addition and explanation, this subject has many aspects, and it is a guide for our lives — especially for our difficult life today, which will get harder every day, because we have Christ neither in our homes nor upon ourselves. That is roughly the substance of it,

the continuation of last Sunday, which the Church sets before us. But it would be an omission if I did not say something — and I am trading a little on your patience here — about another event that our Church commemorates today. I do not know if you paid attention to the texts. The texts spoke of an icon of our Lord not made by human hands. You know about this. The Protestants, the Jehovah's Witnesses and other heretics accuse us of being idolaters, because we keep and even venerate icons of the Lord, of the Theotokos, and of the Saints. But if a person pays attention to this present day...

he will see that the Church is calling to mind an event, a historical event, concerning an icon of our Lord which He Himself once gave to a very humble king, Abgar by name, in Edessa of Palestine, a leper. There are other icons not made by hands as well; this is not the only one. There is another image which our Lord left upon a cloth, on Veronica's cloth, that young woman who went to wipe the sweat from His face as He was going up the way of martyrdom carrying His Cross. And that place still exists to this day, and the Roman Catholics have it. Now the history of this icon of our Lord not made by hands is as follows. This King Abgar heard

that there was someone working extraordinary miracles. He wrote a letter, a short one, and the text of it still exists, and he sent it with an artist of his own from that time. In his letter he writes: 'I have heard many things about you, and I have also heard many things about what you suffer from this hard race of the Jews. In conclusion I tell you that I am sick, and I beg you to come here. But if you cannot come, write me something or send me something that will comfort me. And I tell you this: small though my kingdom is, I would gladly accept that we reign over it together.' The king was ready to take Christ as his king as well.

So he gave the letter to this young artist and said to him, 'Go and find Him, give Him the letter, and plead with Him yourself, if it is possible, to pass by this way and come to me too and make me well, since He does so much good.' The young man went and found Him, and at that hour our Christ was speaking. There was a crowd, and there were no loudspeakers, so it seems He had gone up on some rock and was speaking to the people. The young man saw that it would be hard to get near Him, so he takes out a roof tile and starts in his own way to sketch the face of our Christ, so as to take it back to his king. But in a little while the face of Christ changed. He rubs that out and starts a fresh drawing all over again. He moves further along; in a little while the face of Christ changed again. He rubs that one out too, and in this state

the end of Christ's sermon found him. He had rubbed it out three or four times and had got absolutely nowhere. When it was over, our Christ comes up to him Himself and says to him, 'Give me your cloth.' He gives Him his cloth, and our Christ wipes His face with it and says to him, 'Take this and give it to the one who sent you, and tell him that he will be partly healed and afterwards he will be completely healed.' This is the Mandylion not made by hands, on which our Christ left His face, and which the man carried to Abgar. Indeed the letter our Christ wrote still exists: 'Blessed are you,' He says to him, 'for you did not see and yet you believed. I cannot come; I have a mission and I must finish my work. But you will be partly healed, and afterwards, when I have ascended and reached that place, there will

come a man of mine and he will heal you completely.' And that is exactly what happened. When the cloth was brought to him, and Abgar the king, the leper, saw it and venerated it, all the leprosy left his body and only a part of it remained on his head. Then, when the Apostles went out to preach, the Apostle Thaddeus passed through that region, and he baptised him, and the rest of it fell away too. The leprosy went, both the leprosy of the body and the leprosy of the soul. And that face meant so much to Abgar at that time that he took down his own image from the city. At the gate of the city there was a great image of Abgar the king, and when the people passed in and out of his kingdom they used to bow before it. He took that image down and put up the image of Christ and said, 'From now on

it is Him you shall venerate.' And according to history that icon remained there until the days of Julian the Apostate. At that point they were forced to take it away from there and hide it. And they hid it in the following manner. They knocked a hole in a wall and built it in. They set it inside, and they put bricks in front of it, and stones and mortar, and they lit a candle and sealed it in there and left it, and now nobody knew where it was. About two hundred years went by, and there was an enemy attack on Edessa, and those faithful people were begging God to help them, and the Most Holy Theotokos appeared to them and said, 'You will go to such and such a place and you will bring out the icon of our Lord and God, my Son, and it will give you help.'

And indeed she showed them where to go; they broke the wall open and found the icon just as it was, and the lamp still burning. And on the strength of that blessing, the blessing of this icon, which they carried in procession around the walls of the city, all the enemies withdrew and went far away, and the city was saved. So we have here the first icon of Christ not made by hands. If, then, our Christ was an idolater for giving His own face to an icon, then we are idolaters to exactly the same degree. We do not know our own history. We have not done our reading. And that is precisely why our faith is shaken by every single thing said to us by every mind that has caught a bit of wind from the West. I pray the holy God to have mercy on us and to let us stand rightly in the faith and close to Him, because that is needed above all in our days. In our churches

one of them is this: 'Apostles, gathered here from the ends of the earth, bury my body in Gethsemane; and You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.' And the other is this: 'In giving birth you preserved your virginity; in your Dormition you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You passed over into life, since you are the Mother of Life, and by your intercessions you deliver our souls from death.' These two hymns, I say, are the ones that hold within them the whole meaning of this day. I wonder, my beloved,

has today's feast ever really occupied you seriously? I may be mistaken, but I see this day as another Great Friday. On Great Friday we buried God, and today we are burying the Mother of God. The day is just as solemn: on that day, I repeat, we buried God, and today the Mother of God. Two tombs, historic tombs, tombs that will never be repeated, all-holy tombs. For the one received God and the other received the Mother of God.

And today these two tombs are empty. There are no other empty tombs. In all the world, none except the tomb of God and the tomb of the Mother of God. Every people has some god, but he is nailed down inside his shroud. Only the God of the Christians, of the Orthodox, has an empty tomb. So I say we ought to face this day today as a kind of Great Friday. We Orthodox are more devoted to the All-Holy than we are to Christ. Whatever we say, we say it with reference to the All-Holy. 'My All-Holy Lady, here I am.' 'By the grace of the All-Holy.'

Everything has to have the All-Holy in it. We speak more about the Mother than about the Saviour. A mother's name is always sweet. But there is one basic mistake we Orthodox make. We remember her only when we need her. He said that she did not forsake the world: 'in your Dormition you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos, the God-bearer.' But the world has forsaken the Theotokos. The Theotokos does not forsake the world, and she proved it to us in the recent earthquakes. Those recent earthquakes, for us Greeks at least, should have been a great lesson. And especially a lesson about the Theotokos. The Theotokos did not forsake us.

We forsook the Theotokos. The Theotokos did not curse us; it is we who blaspheme the Theotokos. And yet this is a great matter, one which unfortunately we do not take seriously and from which we are not much edified. It is true that often we do not forget her, but, I repeat, only under the pressure of need. It would be a great blessing for our nation, for our Church, for the family, for each Greek individually, if we truly reverenced the Theotokos. We have an unsleeping intercession, as our Church says, at the right hand of Christ. Only at the Second Coming will we Orthodox learn what the All-Holy is; only at the Second Coming.

When we see her at the right hand of Christ, apart of course from the Honourable Forerunner, John the Baptist, and she does not smile on our behalf, then we shall understand what harm we did ourselves by never getting to know this person who has no equal. She is not God; she is after God, as our Church so beautifully puts it. She does not save, she intercedes; Christ saves. 'By the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us.' She brings us in, she speaks to Christ, she pleads with Christ. And our Christ waits for us, He gives us the opportunity of metanoia, of repentance, and if we turn back, repent, make our Holy Confession, receive His Body and His Blood and come to terms with Him here at the Beautiful Gate, the holy doors, then by the intercessions of the

All-Holy we shall pass over into eternity. That, after all, is why it is called the Beautiful Gate, because it is through here that souls pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. The Church has given her the place of honour, at the right hand of Christ. As the Prophet saw her: 'The Queen stood at his right hand, arrayed in gold, adorned with many colours.' And when the priest takes out the portion for her at the Holy Proskomide, from the loaf that we ourselves bring to church, he sets her there on the right, next to Christ; and on the right of Christ she will be for all eternity. This is a great matter for us, my beloved. Let the women learn about the Theotokos, let them live the life of the Theotokos, and let them teach their children the Theotokos, because people who have not come to know the Theotokos have not come to know Christ.

Those who have not come to know the Mother cannot possibly come to know the Son. And the Son — today you heard how a simple woman from the crowd blessed Him: 'Blessed is the womb that bore you, my child, blessed is the womb and the breasts that nursed you.' Are such words spoken today to modern mothers? Do mothers today have children, so that they can say, 'Glory to God — joy to the mother who has you, my child'? Or do they say, 'A curse on the mother who has you — why did you come and take away my children's father, why did you come and take away my children's mother'? Well then, that is what people today say; that is what they say. Why? Because the Theotokos has been left as nothing but a service,

nothing but a nurse — 'All-Holy, help me' — and worth the odd candle, but not someone to imitate. The divine John Chrysostom tells us plainly: the memory of a Saint, the imitation of a Saint.

And so, in the same way: the memory of the All-Holy, the imitation of the All-Holy. So let the Most Holy Theotokos come into our lives, my beloved. We never came to know her; we came to know her Son, in her church, and she is our mother. To have her as our mother we must have Christ as our brother, and it is through her that we have Christ as our brother. If we do not have Christ as our brother, then we do not have the All-Holy as our mother, nor God as our Father. So this kinship ought to hold us together, and we ought to take it seriously. Let us imitate her as a virgin, let us imitate her as a daughter, let us imitate her as a mother, let us imitate her as the most serious woman in the world, as the prophets saw her, as the Archangel Gabriel announced her — the Archangel who served her from her childhood right up to the very days when she fell asleep.

Then things will change in our lives. It is not enough to beg her only when we need her, because that is what happens with us. There is some need: 'Come, All-Holy.' There is no need: 'Out, All-Holy.' You know that the All-Holy cannot stay in a house when that house lives lawlessly: when the unmarried girl is living with a man and the man is living with a girl, when there is no fasting in the house, when there is no self-control in the house, when children are not welcomed in the house, when there is blasphemy in the house, when all the rest follows, fornication and adultery — the All-Holy cannot remain there. We may have her icon, I have no objection to that. We may have her lamp burning, but the All-Holy herself we do not have. And when a person does not have the All-Holy, he is uncovered, he is out in the rain and the storm with no umbrella. The All-Holy is a shelter, a shelter over us all.

She has great boldness before Christ. She may have departed, but she is with us. 'She did not forsake it.' She holds the world, but the part of the world that has not forsaken her, because there has to be cooperation. God, or the Theotokos, or the Saints always want to help, but the person has to want it too. People today, for the most part, do not want the Theotokos in their house, because she rebukes their lawless life, nor Christ at their work, because He rebukes their lawless way of living. That is exactly why they do not want Him. But Christ is not to blame. The purity, the virginity and the chastity of the All-Holy are not to blame. It is we who want a lawless life, and the ugly thing, the bad thing — and the maddest part of all is that we then insist that the All-Holy must bless it for us. She does not bless it. She wants what is right, what is honourable. That is why I say today is a great day. In a certain sense we are escorting

her to her grave; we are at the funeral of the All-Holy today, at our own mother's funeral. How would we be standing in church today if it were our own mother lying dead here? I ask you: would you men be here in short sleeves with your shirts hanging open, and the women half-dressed? At your own mother's funeral you would not. You would not. 'Am I sinning?' someone will say. I am simply putting the matter to you. Whether you are sinning or not, whether I am sinning or not, that is a question for each person's conscience. I say this because if I am going to visit some official, or to an official's funeral, or to an official's wedding, I will dress according to protocol. But when it comes to going to the All-Holy, or to God, then I do as I please. That means I have not yet grasped the matter. Where am I appearing, where am I going? I am going to the funeral of the All-Holy — how am I going? If I were going to my own mother's funeral, how would I go?

That's the point. You know what Basil the Great said: "The good is not good, if it is not done well." The good, he says, is not good if you don't do it properly. Suppose I have a medicine that cures cancer. I'm supposed to take three spoonfuls a day. Instead I tip the bottle up and drink it all down. I'll die an hour sooner. Why? Because even though the medicine is good and works wonders, I'm not taking it the way it's meant to be taken. That's exactly it. It's a beautiful thing for a person to come to the church of the Most Holy Theotokos today. Yes. Come. But come on Sunday as well. If today, the feast of the All-Holy, is a funeral, then Sunday is the Resurrection. Where are you on Sunday? Why aren't you there? You see, you're not doing things in the right order, and they have to be done well. That's the point.

So it gives us an opportunity to take stock and, in a way, to bring ourselves into better tune. That, after all, is exactly why God leaves us here. Do you imagine He leaves us here so that we can get an education, as though He needed us to staff His offices? Or do you think He leaves us here to pile one brick on top of another and put up apartment blocks, so that an earthquake can come along and level them? That's ridiculous. Man did not come into the world in order to live, my beloved. Man came in order to die, and he dies in order to live. Look at us: we knock on wood, we want nothing to do with death. God died, because He became man. The Mother of God died, because she was human. And are we not going to die? So let us take these things seriously and not fool ourselves. Will we not one day find ourselves face to face with this? And the grave is not the end.

but the beginning of another life, a life that has no end and no finish. So this is what I would ask of you: if you haven't grasped it, grasp it — that we are standing in a day as great as this. And let us ask the Most Holy Theotokos, there where she is, to intercede both for our departed and for us who have so many needs: as individuals, as families, as a society, as the Church, as this, as that, as the other. It is always a great thing to ask for her intercessions, because she has not abandoned us and she has great boldness before Christ. One more thing and I'm finished. It is our habit, we Orthodox — we who are Christians of the great feast days — to come forward to the Holy Eucharist on the feast of the Most Holy Theotokos, at Pascha, at Christmas. "I'm going to receive Communion for the feast of the All-Holy." Well and good. But have you made any preparation?

For a person to receive Holy Communion — to be in communion with Him, because that is what the word means — he has to understand where he is going. And the divine John Chrysostom says: let no one come forward declaring himself worthy. Stop and think: to Whom am I going? He knows the past, the present and the future. He knows us from every side. It is not enough simply to receive Communion; because for the one who prepares himself, it is for the forgiveness of sins and life eternal.

But for the one who does not prepare and simply receives Communion because it is a great day, while you are expecting one thing, it brings the opposite result. So if we want not to be burned up, but for it to be for the forgiveness of sins and life eternal, and not for the burning of our souls, then we will pay attention to this detail we are telling you about. It is a good thing for a person to be in communion with God — provided he has made the preparation. I mentioned something a moment ago: for a person to arrive here, he has to put some things in order further back. There are two kinds of peace that the Church speaks of. "For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord," and "For the peace, let us pray to the Lord." Peace with the world, and peace with God. When those two kinds of peace have come about — when I have asked forgiveness of the neighbour I have some dealing with, when I have made my peace with God, having repented, having confessed, and having set things right —

then I may come forward here and receive Christ as well. Christ enters into me, and I into Christ. We become one, and what He said is fulfilled: "Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him, and I will raise him up on the last day." Now, many people may make no preparation at all — no metanoia, no repentance — no making of peace, no confession — and perhaps they still have matters pending with certain people: lawsuits, the passions at work, they won't even say good morning, and so on. And they come forward on these days to receive Communion, for the sake of the festive greetings. We are making a mistake. Someone will say: what should we do, if there are people among us who were intending to come forward today, but who are not in order with respect to what I am describing? I have one thing to say to them, as a friend and in Christ: postpone it. Postpone it.

Let them settle their situation with their spiritual father, let them make peace in the matters they have left hanging, and then let them come. Tomorrow it will be the same Holy Communion; it is not different. The Holy Spirit who came down today, when the priest raised his hands and said, "Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here presented, and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ. Amen. And that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Your Christ. Amen." — that same Holy Spirit, tomorrow too, with the same words the priest will say, will once again change the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood, so that those of us who are prepared may come forward, and it may be for the forgiveness of sins and life eternal. I turn no one away from the Holy Chalice; in fact I am in favour of frequent Holy Communion — but after preparation. People who did not even fast,

who fasted neither with their eyes, nor with their flesh, nor with their cooking pot, and yet they will come forward for the sake of the festive greetings, because the fifteenth of August is a great day. A great day indeed — but also a great sin, when a person does not put himself in order the way the Church wants. Because even though the Holy Eucharist is the Mystery of Mysteries, it still comes second if the Mystery of repentance is missing, that is to say, of Holy Confession. And don't say, "I'll tell my sins to the icon." The icon tells you nothing. A photograph of the doctor doesn't make you well. You have to tell the doctor, the doctor will examine you, he will write you a prescription, you will take the medicines, and then we'll see whether you get better. "No, I'll tell them to the Most Holy Theotokos." The All-Holy does not forgive. "Then I'll tell them to my lord Saint George." My lord Saint George does not forgive. "So Christ doesn't forgive either? Then who does forgive, in the end?" Christ's priest forgives — the one who has been given the charge.

the priest: "O Saviour, You who said, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed — loose also this Your servant." He is the one who has the charge; Christ clearly gave him the authority: "Receive the Holy Spirit; and whatever he binds, let it be bound, and whatever he looses, let it be loosed." Let us not fool ourselves, let us not manufacture a religion of our own. God bears with us; He does not burn us up on the spot. And yet there have been people who were left standing there with their mouths open. What they received was not Body and Blood; it was a burning coal. If you read the history of the Church, you'll find them: they stood there with their mouths open, they were burned up, because they wanted to do things their own way, to build a religion of their own, on their own terms. Forgive me for the manner and the tone in which I have spoken to you. But I pray the holy God to accept the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos — and that we, for our part, will untie her hands. Let us leave our sins behind in metanoia, in repentance, and in confession, so that she can present us

as we leave this world for that other one — and that is my prayer for all of you.

εάν αυτό που κάνουμε είναι αντίθετο με το θέλημα του Θεού ή είναι σύμφωνο με το θέλημα του Θεού. Αυτό είναι το θέμα το δικό μας και από εκεί και κάτω είναι δική του δουλειά. Όλο το παν ξεκινάει από το ότι ο Χριστός δεν ηθέλησε τα χειροκροτήματα. Είναι κάτι που εμείς δεν μπορούμε να το βγάλουμε ακόμη από πάνω μας. Είναι κάτω από το δέρμα μας βαλμένο, αν κάνουμε κάτι, αν πούμε κάτι, αν βοηθήσουμε κάπου, θέλουμε να μάθουμε τη γνώμη που προκαλέσανε στους άλλους. Περιμένουμε κάπου να μας γράψουν, κάπου να μας συζητήσουν, κάπου να μας αναρτήσουν. Αυτό δεν είναι προς το συμφέρον. Και αν ένας Χριστός απέφευγε, που δεν κινδύνευε, αλλά έκανε μάθημα για μας, εμείς τι πρέπει να κάνουμε;

να βρισκόμεθα σήμερα στην κηδεία της Παναγίας, στην κηδεία της μητέρας μας. Πώς θα είμεθα σήμερα στην εκκλησία αν ήταν η μητέρα μας πεθαμένη εδώ; Σας ερωτώ, θα ήσαστε οι άντρες όπως είναι με τα κοντομάνικά τους και ζωστένες και γυναίκες γυμνές; Στην κηδεία της μάνας τους, δεν θα ήσαστε. Δεν θα ήσαστε. Αμαρτάνω, θα πει κανείς; Απλώς το συζητώ το πράγμα. Το αν αμαρτάνεις ή όχι, ή αν αμαρτάνω ή όχι, αυτό είναι θέμα συνειδήσεως ενός εκάστου. Το λέγω αυτό διότι, εάν πρόκειται να πάω σε έναν επίσημο, ή σε μια κηδεία ενός επισήμου, ή σε ένα γάμο ενός επισήμου, θα ντυθώ σύμφωνα με το πρωτόκολλο. Όταν πρόκειται να πάω στην Παναγία ή στον Θεό, θα κάνω το δικό μου. Αυτό πάει να πει ότι δεν το έχω πιάσει ακόμη το θέμα. Πού παρουσιάζομαι, πού πηγαίνω, πάω στην κηδεία της Παναγίας, πώς πηγαίνω; Αν πήγαινα στης μάνας μου την κηδεία, πώς θα πήγαινα;

αλλά είναι αρχή μιας άλλης ζωής... της οποίας ούτια είσαι τέλος, ούτια είσαι τέρμα. αυτό λοιπόν θα ήθελα, αν δεν το έχετε πιάσει, πιάστε το, ότι είμεθα σε μια τέτοια μεγάλη μέρα, και ας την παρακαλέσουμε την Παναγία εκεί επάνω που είναι, να πρεσβεύει και υπέρ των κεκοιμημένων μας και υπέρ ημών που έχουμε τόσες ανάγκες, σαν άτομα, σαν οικογένεια, σαν κοινωνία, σαν εκκλησία, σαν, σαν, σαν. Είναι μεγάλο κεφάλαιο πάντοτε να ζητάμε τις πρεσβείες της, γιατί δεν μας εγκατέλειψε και έχει μεγάλη παρρησία στον Χριστό. Ένα και τελειώνω. Είθισται εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι, που είμεθα χριστιανοί των ημερών των μεγάλων, την ημέρα της Παναγίας μας, το Πάσχα, τα Χριστούγεννα, να προσερχόμεθα εις την Θεία Ευχαριστία. Εγώ θα κοινωνήσω της Παναγίας. Καλώς τα κάνεις. Έκαμες καμιά προετοιμασία;
