Summary
The lecture explains Christian death as a temporary sleep before the Resurrection of the Dead and presents the Theotokos’s death as her Dormition. The speaker defends Gethsemane as the historical location of her tomb, appealing to pilgrimage sites, ancient hymnography, ecclesiastical tradition, and testimony connected with Saint Helena and Empress Pulcheria. The claim that the title arose only at the Third Ecumenical Council is rejected through references to earlier Christian writers who called Mary Theotokos before the Council of Ephesus in 431.

The good God has granted that we may be together once again, so that we may speak about this unfathomable person, the Most Holy Theotokos.
We spoke in the two previous talks, and today I would like us to say something about her Dormition, which, as you know, is also the central feast of this month and the occasion for these talks. In the New Testament, as you know, death is also called a falling asleep.
Indeed, cemeteries are called sleeping places. For they truly are chambers of rest, and what takes place there is sleep.
For the faithful, death is sleep. Just as a person takes off his clothes in the evening and sleeps, only to awaken in the morning and put them on again, so it is with death. A person lays aside his body, only to receive it again at the Resurrection of the Dead, at what is called Christ’s Second Coming, and to live in a happier world. In Christian language, the death of the Most Holy Theotokos is likewise called her Dormition. But when did the Theotokos fall asleep? That too is worth considering. The traditions and written testimonies preserved to this day tell us that the Most Holy Theotokos lived for eleven years after the Ascension of the Lord. That is, she entered the Temple at the age of three, and at fourteen...
she was betrothed to Joseph. When she was forty-nine, the Lord ascended, and when she was about sixty, she fell asleep. She always lived in Jerusalem, near John, to whose care our Lord entrusted her, as we know, at His Crucifixion. She remained in the very place where the God-Man sacrificed Himself for the salvation of humanity and triumphed through His glorious Resurrection. It is said that the Most Holy Theotokos often went up to the Mount of Olives, from which the Lord ascended, and there, with sacred emotion, she prayed to the heavenly Father and to her Son. She must always have called to mind those great hours in the life of her Jesus, while tears of gratitude flowed from her holy eyes and down her cheeks.
A few days before she fell asleep, the Virgin was informed by an angel from Heaven that her Dormition was approaching. It is said that the angel who brought her the news of her Dormition was once again Gabriel, who had formerly brought her the great message of the Annunciation and said to her, “Rejoice, O full of grace.” As we were saying, this heaven-sent angel now told her not to be troubled, but joyfully to receive this new message of her Dormition, because immortal life beside her Son awaited her. At this point, I would like you to know that in Little Galilee there is a small chapel belonging to the Spanish Fathers...
on the spot where the Most Holy Theotokos knelt in prayer and received the message of her Dormition. In remembrance of all these events, inscriptions describing them remain outside the chapel to this day. In one place, for example, it says: “Three days beforehand, an angel of the Lord comes to the All-Immaculate One, making known to the Pure Lady her translation from this life.” Elsewhere in the same chapel we read: “The Archangel Gabriel, sent from Heaven, brings the Pure Lady a palm branch, a symbol of her elevation on high.”
I want you to know that the same chapel also records, in its own particular wording, that the branches of the trees bowed as the Virgin went up and came down. Specifically, it says: “The plants of the mountain bow their branches and offer reverence to you, O All-Immaculate One, completing the honor due to their Lady.” All these things testify that what tradition has handed down to us is true. After her prayer on the mountain and the Archangel’s announcement, the Most Holy Theotokos returned to Jerusalem and began preparing what was necessary for her burial. It is said that she lit lamps and candles in her home as a sign of joy, and summoned her Christian friends, to whom she announced the message of her Dormition. As was natural, those close to her began to weep and lament at the thought of being parted from her. Soon afterward, the Apostles were miraculously gathered there “from the ends of the earth,” as the hymn says, because, as we know, they had departed to the ends of the inhabited world to preach the Gospel. Evidently, a divine cloud caught them up and bore them through the air to Gethsemane, to the home of the Theotokos. After all, nothing is impossible to the will of Almighty God.
Together with the other disciples and Apostles of Christ, the cloud also brought Dionysius the Areopagite, Saint Hierotheos, and the Apostle Timothy to the Holy City. The account of the Dormition of the Theotokos was to be handed down through these three Holy Fathers. When the Apostles learned the reason for their sudden arrival, they spoke certain words, including these: “O Lady, while you remained in the world, we looked upon you as though we were seeing our own Master and Teacher...
and so we were comforted. But now, how shall we endure this sorrow?”
“Since it is the will of your Son and God that you be translated to the realms above the world, we rejoice in what His providence has ordained for you.” “As they said these things, they drenched themselves with tears,” the account tells us. But she said to them what we have already mentioned: “Friends and disciples of my Son and God, do not turn my joy into mourning.” In other words, do not change my joy into sorrow by speaking this way. While they were saying these things, Paul also arrived. This divinely eloquent man, this chosen vessel, is said to have fallen at the feet of the Mother of God, venerated her, and then opened his mouth and praised her at length: “Rejoice...
O Mother of Life and the theme of my preaching. For although I have not beheld Christ, when I see you, I see and contemplate Him.” That is, he says: “Although I myself have not seen Christ, when I look upon you, I feel that I am looking upon Him.” The Virgin then bade farewell to everyone, reclined upon her bed, arranged her all-immaculate body as she wished, and thus began what we might call her departure from this life. In an atmosphere of compunctionate stillness, as was fitting, the Theotokos said farewell to everyone and entreated God for the peace of the world.
Then, lying still upon her deathbed, her divine breath—her radiant and heavenly soul—plainly flew up to Heaven, into the hands of the Lord, as she fulfilled the words she had spoken: “And You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.” She ascended to the throne of God, beside her Son. Afterward, filled with divine and sacred emotion, the Apostles of Christ and a multitude of Christians lifted up her holy body. The funeral was a procession filled with compunction. The Apostles carried the bier, while others walked before it chanting hymns; and above the human voices, an invisible heavenly psalmody could be heard, rising above them all. These were the harmonious voices of the angels and the bodiless powers.
The funeral procession of the Theotokos is reenacted in Jerusalem to this day. On the feast day of the Most Holy Theotokos, a representation of her body, resembling the Epitaphios, is borne in a great procession from the Gethsemane dependency near the Holy Sepulchre. Not only Orthodox Christians take part, but also those of other confessions, as we would say—Armenians and Arabs—as well as Muslims and people of every kind. During the original funeral, some people attempted to cast the Virgin’s holy body down upon the ground.
But then a wondrous event occurred. The Lord could not allow the holy body of His Mother to be dishonored, nor would He permit the impious to throw it into the road. He forestalled those who dared to profane it and struck them. A Jew from that savage mob brazenly seized the bier, and we are told what befell him. Not only was he blinded, but his impious hands were cut off and remained attached to the bier of the Theotokos. This brought him to deep contrition of soul: he believed in Christ and acknowledged the Most Holy Theotokos as the Mother of the Lord. Afterward, he was healed. It is even said that he took a small piece from the palm branch carried in the funeral procession, and with it all those who had been blinded with him were also healed—through that small piece of the Archangel’s branch.
All who had been blinded were healed, and all came to believe. Near Gethsemane there is a special place associated with this event, which to this day reminds pilgrims of the miracles worked during the funeral of the Theotokos. The Tradition of the Church speaks of the translation of the Theotokos: “You were translated unto life.” After the burial of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Holy Apostles remained for a few days there in the village of Gethsemane. According to tradition, for three days they continually heard hymns and angelic melodies. When the Most Holy Theotokos was buried, one of the Apostles, Thomas, was absent. He arrived at Gethsemane three days after her burial.
The other Apostles opened the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos so that the Apostle who had been absent could venerate her. But when it was opened, they were all astonished. The tomb was empty. Only the burial cloth remained, and the Theotokos had been translated from the tomb. The Orthodox Church reveres the tradition of the translation of the Theotokos and regards it, as Saint Nikodemos says, as a mystical doctrine that cannot be publicly proclaimed in the Church. The Most Holy Theotokos fell asleep and was buried in Jerusalem, in the village of Gethsemane. Gethsemane was the place that received her body. The tomb of the Mother of God at Gethsemane is preserved to this day and has belonged to the Orthodox from the time of its reconstruction...
during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, as they say. The Armenians have also established a presence there and built a small shrine outside the tomb at Gethsemane; each day they too celebrate their service after the Orthodox. The tomb is regarded as an important religious inheritance of Orthodoxy, one of our sacred shrines of the Most Holy Theotokos. Unfortunately, the Roman Catholics are greatly troubled by this fact, and for this reason they thought to cast doubt upon it. To take something away from the glory of Orthodoxy, they created a false controversy and claimed that the Most Holy Theotokos lived and was buried not in Jerusalem, at Gethsemane, but in Ephesus.
They base this claim on a dream seen by a Roman Catholic nun in the last century. The Turks readily accepted it for the sake of tourism. Yet history, tradition, and hymnography dissolve these false Roman Catholic fabrications and make them disappear. The designs of the Roman Catholics and the aims they are trying to achieve in this matter fail resoundingly. Historical sources state that the Most Holy Theotokos was buried at Gethsemane. Indeed, an eleventh-century codex kept in the Vatican Library contains a list of the churches founded by Saint Helena. Fourth among them is recorded this church: the church of Gethsemane and of the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos.
It is explicitly mentioned. Empress Pulcheria opened the Virgin’s tomb, reverently removed some of the burial garments, and preserved them in Constantinople, in the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos at Blachernae. I would like you to know that the shrine of the Most Holy Theotokos in Jerusalem is approximately thirty meters long, and one first descends about sixty-five steps underground. The tomb is hewn from the rock and lies to the right as the faithful enter. While descending this staircase, the faithful encounter on their right a chapel associated with the parents of the Theotokos, Joachim and Anna, and with Joseph her betrothed. I would also like to tell you that I know these things not merely from tradition, but from personal experience, for I was granted the blessing to go there and venerate for the fifth time, to see these places at close range—and indeed, only a few days ago. The ancient hymns of our Church, written by devout and anonymous hymnographers, also confirm that the tomb of the Mother of God is at Gethsemane. Listen to what one troparion, part of the hymnody honoring the Blessed Ever-Virgin, says: “Rejoice, O Gethsemane, sacred enclosure of the divine resting place of the Theotokos, where the Queen of all was laid to rest.” No one throughout the course of the centuries...
No papist through the centuries can reasonably dispute the holy and incontestable words of the Ever-Virgin to the Apostles, words repeated with profound emotion by thousands—indeed, hundreds of thousands—of Christian voices: “O Apostles, gathered here from the ends of the earth, bury my body here in the village of Gethsemane; and You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.” Indeed, the foremost of the hymnographers, John of Damascus, in a canon sung on the feast of the Dormition, speaks of the translation of the Theotokos and mentions Zion—that is, Jerusalem. My beloved, besides all these events,
every believer must know precisely what the Church teaches concerning the Theotokos, because this is a dogmatic matter. No one can express whatever opinion he pleases and imagine that he will remain without consequence. So allow me, during the remainder of this talk and in one more which, with God’s help, I hope we shall give, to add some fundamental points concerning the person of the Theotokos. The Theotokos is a prophetic person; that is, a person foretold in the promises of God, even before the days of Joachim and Anna, through whom she came into being.
God speaks first of her and then of Jesus, her offspring. In Genesis 3:15 we read: “And I will put enmity between you”—that is, Satan—“and the woman”—that is, the Theotokos—“and between your seed and her seed,” meaning Jesus. “He,” Jesus, “will strike your head”—He will crush your head—“and you will strike His heel,” as we explained in another talk. The Old Testament also prophesies concerning her, prefiguring and symbolizing her.
It does so in very many passages. Yet despite the clear teaching of Holy Scripture concerning her, various heretics and dissenters—whether they call themselves Evangelicals or Jehovah’s Witnesses—blaspheme her. First, they claim that she should not be called Theotokos; and second, that after giving birth to the Savior she supposedly had other sons by Joseph. They spread all these claims, not because they are true, not because they have discovered them by searching Holy Scripture or Holy Tradition—which they also reject—and not because these claims offer any edifying moral knowledge, but because they are moved by a spirit of insult and blasphemy.
They want to portray this Mother, who became a mother beyond the natural order, as having no exceptional worth. They say that she is of no benefit, because she is like every other woman, and therefore they believe that we owe her no honor. Yet our duty to protect our own faithful, our love for our neighbor, and our boundless reverence for the Theotokos, our Mother, command us to answer them and refute their blasphemies and false teachings, which oppose both the spirit and the letter of Holy Scripture. Allow me to present several biblical types of the Theotokos. First, we encounter her as the woman whose offspring will crush the head of the enemy, the devil, as we said in Genesis 3:15. Second, we encounter her as Jacob’s ladder, by which God descended, in Genesis 28:12–13. Third, we find her as the bush that burned but was not consumed, mentioned in Exodus 3:1–4 and associated with Mount Horeb, Sinai. That bush, burning yet unconsumed, exists to this day. Fourth, we encounter her as the jar bearing the heavenly manna—that is, Jesus.
The jar bears the heavenly manna; and here too, an earthen vessel bears the heavenly manna, our Christ. We read of the first in Exodus 16:33, and of the other in John 6:49–58. Fifth, we find her as Aaron’s rod that budded. There, a dry rod puts forth shoots; here, a Virgin gives birth. We find this in Numbers 17:1–10. Sixth, we encounter her as the fleece covered with dew, which Gideon beheld beforehand. We find this in Judges 6:36. Seventh, we find her as the Virgin bearing Emmanuel in her holy womb: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” which means, “God with us.” We read this in Isaiah 7:14. We also encounter her as the light cloud fleeing into Egypt with the Lord from Herod’s persecution. This is mentioned in Isaiah 19:1. Ninth, she is presented as the queen standing at the Lord’s right hand, as we read in Psalm 44:9. We also find her as the mystical tongs, as we read in Isaiah
chapter 6. We find her as the Ark of the Covenant, which we read about in Hebrews 9:1–5, and we encounter her as the Tabernacle of Testimony, again in Hebrews 9:1–5. We also find her as the Closed Gate through which God passed and which remained closed, as we read in Ezekiel 44:1–3. These are not the only prophecies; I have merely listed a few. There are many others showing us how the Theotokos was foretold and prefigured.
Together with our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the honorable Forerunner, and the precious Cross, she is among those holy persons and realities that have endured the greatest mockery throughout history and down to the present day. But we shall stop here and, God willing, continue again. The good God has granted that we should be together once more, so that we may say a few more things concerning this unsearchable person whom we call the Most Holy Theotokos. The starting point of all these talks is her Dormition, to which this month is dedicated.
In our previous talks, and especially in the last one, those of you who were with us will remember that we spoke about her Dormition and about certain biblical passages concerning the Most Holy Theotokos. I would now like to answer several objections circulated both by dissenters and even by some of our own people. For example, some cannot understand the word Theotokos. They argue that the title Theotokos implies that Christ, as God, is eternal, and that we Orthodox therefore act impiously when we call the Savior’s mother Theotokos. But Greek Evangelicals, at least, know—or ought to know—that in the Creed we Orthodox
proclaim—and they too proclaimed with us, before abandoning their faith—that we believe “in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages.” Why, then, do they accuse us of impiety for calling His mother Theotokos?
Why did the Holy Spirit say through Isaiah, in Isaiah 7:14—and why did the angel recall and the Evangelist Matthew repeat—“Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” which means, “God with us”? In this passage of Holy Scripture we see that the Virgin would give birth, as indeed she did, to God with us, Emmanuel—that is, God incarnate. Therefore, when a woman has given birth to God incarnate, what else should she who gave birth to God be called in the religious language of Christians? Should she not be called Theotokos?
Let us hear the title Theotokos from the Holy Spirit Himself, and then see whether we Orthodox are mistaken. When the Theotokos visited Elizabeth, Holy Scripture says: “And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, that the child leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she cried out with a loud voice and said: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’” The Holy Spirit, through Elizabeth,
reveals in Holy Scripture that “the mother of my Lord” means “the Mother of my God.” And since the Virgin is the Mother of God, what is she? She is the Theotokos. Whoever rejects this title, whether foreign or from among our own people, fights against the Holy Spirit, by whose illumination other passages of the New Testament were also written. One of these passages,
for example, is Luke 1:35. There it says: “The power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” And we ask: since the One to be born is the Son of God, what should she who gave birth to the Son of God be called? Should she not be called Theotokos? Another passage is Romans 1:3. There Paul says: “Concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the Resurrection from the dead.” But if the One descended from the seed of David is the Son of God and God blessed forever, what should she who gave birth to this Son of God be called? Should she not be called Theotokos?
There is another passage in Romans 9:5. The epistle says: “Of whom are the fathers, and from whom, according to the flesh, is Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever.” And in Galatians 4:4 it says: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.” If the One sent by God to be born of a woman is His Son, what should she who gave birth to the Son of God Himself be called? Should she not be called Theotokos? Moreover, the title Theotokos expresses a great teaching, because through this one brief yet rich title even the simplest Christian expresses the great teaching of the Incarnation: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,” as we read in John 1:14. For when we call the Virgin Mary Theotokos, we do nothing other than confess Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh. As John says in his catholic epistle: “Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh is of God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist.” This is 1 John 4:2–3.
How, then, could we fail to use the word Theotokos, which expresses both the letter and the spirit of Holy Scripture and proclaims the great Mystery of godliness, that “God was manifested in the flesh”? But when such a decisive answer is given to all these dissenting heretics, they hasten to offer us a seemingly plausible argument: that the early Church did not know the word Theotokos, and that the title was first established in the fifth century by the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus. That is what they say. But this is dishonest.
It is utterly dishonest. These teachers contradict themselves, because on the one hand they do not accept the Fathers, the Councils, and so forth, while on the other hand they come and tell us what did or did not exist in the early Church. They claim that the Fathers—Basil the Great, Epiphanius, John Chrysostom, and the others—nowhere use the word Theotokos for the Theotokos. This is an outright lie. All these so-called Evangelicals, Bible Students, or Jehovah’s Witnesses—whatever they may call themselves—are speaking falsely. They do not accept such authorities, yet they make these claims to us, although we know both Tradition and history and can see that matters are not as they say. The Theotokos was called Theotokos much earlier.
The Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus took place in 431. Yet, for example, in the year 238 Origen called the Theotokos “Theotokos.” In his commentary, in the second volume on Deuteronomy, page 331, he says: “He calls her the woman already betrothed, as was also said of Joseph and the Theotokos.” Saint Dionysius of Alexandria, writing to Paul of Samosata in the year 250, says: “He who was incarnate of the holy Virgin and Theotokos Mary.” Gregory of Neocaesarea, in the year 275, says: “The holy Theotokos offers up the song of this prophecy,” in a homily on the Annunciation. Methodius, bishop of Patara, in the year 311,
says: “The Theotokos entreats Him who was incarnate from her immaculate and all-blameless treasury, the life-giving and ineffable coal.” And there are many more examples. Eusebius, in his Ecclesiastical History—although they claim that he says nothing—writes: “Therefore the most devout mother of the emperor,” meaning Helena, “wonderfully adorned at Bethlehem the memorial of the Theotokos’s childbearing.” These things are found in his Life of Saint Constantine, chapter 43. He says that Helena built a marvelous structure at the place where the Theotokos gave birth. Athanasius the Great, likewise, in the year 296, also speaks of the Theotokos: “The angel himself, when seen, confesses that he was sent by the Lord”;
“Gabriel to Zechariah, and Gabriel also to the Theotokos Mary”—this is what he confessed. Cyril of Jerusalem calls the Lord’s mother Theotokos in his letter to Nestorius. Julian the Apostate, that impious emperor, also acknowledges the title Theotokos while reproaching the Christians, saying: “Why do you call the mother of the Galilean Theotokos?” Is that not what he says? “You call the mother of the Galilean Theotokos.” And again: “You do not cease calling Mary Theotokos.” Basil the Great also uses the title Theotokos in the year 370: “Because the ears of those who love Christ cannot endure hearing that the Theotokos ever ceased to be a Virgin.” Gregory the Theologian goes even further in answering them, calling those who do not confess Christ as God blasphemers.
“If anyone does not accept the Most Holy Theotokos as Theotokos,” he says—more specifically, in one of his discourses to Cledonius: “If anyone does not regard Mary as Theotokos, he is separated from the Godhead.” Amphilochius of Iconium, in the year 370, says: “Therefore Mary the Virgin conceived the living God, the Word.” And again: “If anyone bears the name of Christian, let him also embrace the Theotokos, the Virgin who is in God,” and so forth. Epiphanius, in the year 380 after Christ, calls the Virgin Theotokos: “And if they ask you how He knew her, tell them: without the seed of man, from Mary the Theotokos, He fashioned anew His own holy flesh,” and so forth. John Chrysostom also speaks of her and calls her Theotokos; indeed, he says many things about her. Listen to how John Chrysostom expresses himself.
“Is there,” he says, “anything higher than Mary the Theotokos? O man, travel through the whole creation in your thoughts.” Go throughout the whole world with your nous, he says, “and see whether there is anyone equal to or greater than the holy Virgin Theotokos. Roam over the earth, look across the sea, examine the air, search the heavens with your understanding, call to mind all the invisible powers, and see whether there is any other such wonder in all creation.” “If, then, they say that Melchizedek or anyone else belongs to the heavenly realm,” John Chrysostom continues, “let them hear that he too bends the knee” before Christ, who was incarnate from Mary the Theotokos. Proclus also—
—a disciple of John Chrysostom—what does he say about the Theotokos? “A sacred treasure has gathered us here today,” he says, “the holy Virgin Mary, the Theotokos: the undefiled treasure of Ever-Virginity, the spiritual Paradise of the Second Adam, the workshop in which the two natures were united,” if you prefer that expression, and so forth. Theodoret also calls her Theotokos. How, then, can they tell us that the Third Ecumenical Council, held in 431, was the first to designate the Theotokos as Theotokos, when fifteen Holy Fathers had already called her by that name? They are therefore wrong. And not only this: more generally, they wish to blaspheme her, and that is precisely why they say such things.
Yet we are obliged to know exactly where the truth lies, and we shall call her Theotokos for as long as we live and have our being. Another objection concerns the Ever-Virginity of the Theotokos. The Orthodox Church of Christ believes that, because of her purity and holiness, she was counted worthy to be addressed by the Angel as “full of grace” and “blessed.” According to Holy Scripture, she did not become the bride of Joseph, as some claim, but remained Ever-Virgin. The passage on which they rely above all is the Angel’s word to Joseph: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.” And also: “Then Joseph arose from sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.”
“He took his wife, and did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn Son.” These are the words we read in Matthew 1:20–25. And they all declare with one voice that the phrases “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife” and “he took his wife” clearly show that Joseph took the Theotokos as his spouse. Secondly, from the phrase “he did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn Son,” they conclude that he knew her afterward. And thirdly, they claim that the word “firstborn” makes it clear that other children were born afterward—that there were, in other words, second-born children as well. But let us address each point separately. First, concerning the phrases “do not be afraid to take Mary your wife” and “he took your wife.”
From these phrases we must not suppose that Joseph took the Theotokos as his spouse, but that he took her under his protection. For later, when Herod sought to kill the Child, the Theotokos, alone and without Joseph’s protection, could not easily have protected Him. It is rather absurd and blasphemous to conclude that an angel of the Lord came down to Joseph in order to arrange a marriage, especially in the midst of the supreme and ineffable event of the Savior’s birth. But the Protestants fail to notice that, even before the Angel appeared, Holy Scripture called Joseph her husband in the words: “Then Joseph her husband, being a righteous man.”
This is stated in Matthew 1:19, while he was still only betrothed to her and was not her husband, for the immediately preceding verse says: “After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,” Matthew 1:18. Moreover, even after the Angel’s appearance, Holy Scripture still calls Mary “betrothed.” If the interpretation offered by the various heretics were true, she would have to be called Joseph’s wife, not his betrothed. The fleshly marriage imagined by the Evangelicals and others would have taken place afterward. Yet we see that when the time came for Christ our Lord to be born, Holy Scripture still referred to Mary as betrothed. Let us look at the passage.
“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child,” Luke 2:4–5. Why does it not say “with his wife,” but rather “with Mary, who was betrothed to him”? And one more thing, gentlemen who interpret the Scriptures: do you interpret the Gospel literally? Then tell us this. The Angel calls Joseph “son of David”: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.” Was Joseph literally David’s son? You will certainly say no. Why, then, do you not interpret that expression literally, while interpreting the words about Mary in a strictly literal way?
Why do you not reject the whole passage, since it was, after all, a dream? He related his dream. It would be easy for you to say, “We do not believe in dreams,” and reject it. You would be more honest if you rejected the entire passage than you are now, when you distort it. Another proof that Mary never became Joseph’s wife is that nowhere is she referred to as the wife of Joseph, but always as the Child’s mother or the mother of Jesus. If you wish, look at Matthew 2:11: “The young Child with Mary His mother.” “Arise, take the young Child and His mother,” Matthew 2:14. “Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother by night.”
And in verse 20: “Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.” Nowhere does it say “his wife.” In Luke 2:43 we read: “Joseph and His mother did not know it.” In Luke 2:48: “His mother said to Him.” And in Luke 2:51: “His mother kept all these sayings in her heart.” John likewise does not call Mary the wife of Joseph, but the mother of Jesus: “And on the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there,” John 2:1. “And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him,” John 2:3. “His mother said to the servants,” John 2:5.
Thus her true designation was “the mother of the Child” and “the mother of Jesus,” and not the wife of Joseph, because she was never his spouse, but only his betrothed. This was so that she might remain under his protection and guardianship, for if our Most Holy Theotokos had gone about pregnant and without a man to protect her, she would have been stoned, as we said in another talk. Yet despite all these clear testimonies, the Roman Church, through a mistaken interpretation of these passages, has even established a feast on January 23 celebrating the betrothal of the Theotokos to Joseph. Sadly, it failed to understand the meaning of these passages from Matthew.
Matthew, being a Hebrew, knew Greek only through practical use, and for this reason his Gospel is full of Hebraisms. Luke, however, knew Greek well and clarifies the matter. He tells us that Joseph went up to Bethlehem to be registered “with Mary, his betrothed wife,” and not “with his wife,” as we have said. This passage proves, beloved, that the teaching of the so-called Roman Church—that a marriage was supposedly celebrated between Mary and Joseph—and its establishment of a special feast on January 23 are not true. In general, we should understand that the elder Joseph had been appointed to fulfill the role of the man who was presumed to be Christ’s father. Joseph was His father “as was supposed,” as we read in Luke 3:23.
Nowhere does the passage show that he entered into marriage with Mary or that he necessarily took her into his house as his wife, for Luke says that the Virgin, even while pregnant, was still betrothed to Joseph. And when she returned from Elizabeth, she went to her own house, not to his. This they do not see. “And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her own house”—not his—Luke 1:56. Yet despite all this, there are sayings of the Holy Fathers which proclaim that Mary was entrusted to Joseph, certainly not for marriage.
“Those who dwell together”—this is how John Chrysostom speaks in his fourth homily on Matthew. I want us to understand the expression “to dwell together.” In the case of Joseph and Mary, it does not have the meaning given to it by Evangelicals and others. For besides meaning “to reside together,” “to share one’s life,” or “to live together,” it can also mean “to be joined,” “to be connected,” or “to share a moral and spiritual bond,” and so forth. Joseph therefore kept Mary under his immediate supervision, guardianship, and protection; they did not live under the same roof, as Holy Scripture clearly states. This is also shown by Matthew’s phrases “before they came together,” “do not be afraid to take her,” and “do not hesitate to receive her.” These expressions therefore show that, up to the fourth month of the pregnancy, the betrothed couple had not lived together.
Since they had not lived together up to that time, would they have begun living together afterward, once the Angel had revealed the ineffable Mystery? I do not think so. Now, you see, there are other words in this passage that trouble some people—for example, the expression “until.” But that subject also requires time of its own. Our time has run out, so we shall stop here and, God willing, continue in another talk. For today, we pray that her grace may be with the whole world and with us.

διακηρύττομεν διακηρύττομεν, και αυτοί μαζί μας βέβαια, προτού αρνηθούν την πίστη τους, διακήρυτταν ότι πιστεύουμε «εις έναν Κύριον Ιησού Χριστόν, τον Υιόν του Θεού τον μονογενή, τον εκ του Πατρός γεννηθέντα προ πάντων των αιώνων». Διατί, λοιπόν, μας κατηγορούν ότι ασεβούμε, αποκαλούντες τη μητέρα του Θεοτόκο;
Γιατί το Άγιο Πνεύμα διά του Ησαΐου, στο Ζ΄ 14, είπε, και ο Άγγελος υπενθύμισε και ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος επανέλαβε: «Ιδού η Παρθένος εν γαστρί έξει και τέξεται υιόν και καλέσουσι το όνομα αυτού Εμμανουήλ, ο εστί μεθερμηνευόμενον μεθ’ ημών ο Θεός». Στο ρητό αυτό της Αγίας Γραφής, επίσης, βλέπουμε ότι η Παρθένος θα γεννήσει, όπως και γέννησε, τον μεθ’ ημών Θεόν, τον Εμμανουήλ, δηλαδή τον ενανθρωπήσαντα Θεόν. Όταν, λοιπόν, ένας γέννησε τον ενανθρωπήσαντα Θεό, μία μάλλον, γιατί περί γυναικός πρόκειται, πώς αλλιώς θα πρέπει να ονομαστεί στη θρησκευτική γλώσσα των χριστιανών αυτή που έτεκε Θεό; Δεν θα πρέπει να ονομαστεί Θεοτόκος;

παραδείγματι είναι στο Λουκά Α΄ 35. Λέει εκεί: «Δύναμις Υψίστου επισκιάσει σοι· διό και το γεννώμενον Άγιον κληθήσεται Υιός Θεού». Και ρωτάται: εφόσον το γεννώμενον είναι Υιός Θεού, πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί αυτή που έτεκε τον Υιόν του Θεού; Δεν πρέπει να ονομαστεί Θεοτόκος; Ένα άλλο, επίσης, είναι στο Ρωμαίους Α΄ 3. Εκεί λέγει ο Παύλος: «Περί του Υιού αυτού, του γενομένου εκ σπέρματος Δαβίδ κατά σάρκα, του ορισθέντος Υιού Θεού εν δυνάμει κατά πνεύμα αγιοσύνης εξ αναστάσεως νεκρών». Αλλά εάν ο εκ σπέρματος Δαβίδ είναι Υιός Θεού και ο Θεός ευλογητός, πώς πρέπει να ονομαστεί αυτή που έτεκεν αυτόν τον Υιό του Θεού; Δεν πρέπει να ονομαστεί Θεοτόκος;
«Ανέβη δε και Ιωσήφ από της Γαλιλαίας, εκ πόλεως Ναζαρέτ, εις την Ιουδαίαν, απογράψασθαι συν Μαριάμ τη μεμνηστευμένη αυτώ γυναικί, ούση εγκύω», Λουκάς Β΄ 4-5. Διατί δεν λέει «συν τη γυναικί αυτού», παρά λέγει «συν Μαριάμ τη μεμνηστευμένη αυτώ»; Και ακόμη, κύριοι ερμηνευταί, ερμηνεύετε κατά γράμμα το Ευαγγέλιο; Για πείτε μας: ο άγγελος λέγει τον Ιωσήφ «υιόν του Δαβίδ»· «Ιωσήφ, υιός Δαβίδ, μη φοβηθής παραλαβείν Μαριάμ την γυναίκα σου». Ήτο υιός του Δαβίδ; Ασφαλώς θα πείτε όχι. Διατί, λοιπόν, αυτό δεν το ερμηνεύετε κατά γράμμα και το ζήτημα της Μαριάμ το ερμηνεύετε κατά γράμμα;
