Summary

The lecture presents August as a season especially dedicated to the Theotokos, whose holiness surpasses that of the angels and all the saints. Joachim and Anna received Mary miraculously in old age, dedicated her to God, and brought her at age three to the Temple in Jerusalem. At the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel proclaimed that Mary would conceive Jesus by divine grace, and her question expressed reverent discernment rather than unbelief.

We are now in the month of August. For us Orthodox Christians, this is the month especially associated with the Most Holy Theotokos. Her person, exalted above every other person, dominates these days. And with your kind permission, I would like our broadcasts during this time to be devoted to this holy person. I know, of course, that what I am attempting is very daring.

I am attempting to sketch something concerning the Most Holy Theotokos. What mortal can write or speak worthily of the life of the Theotokos? Who can portray the Most Holy Theotokos as she truly is? That is why I say that what I desire to do is daring. Yet I do not do it out of irreverence—she knows that better than anyone. I do it out of love and reverence for her, and I hope that she will help me in this endeavor. It is daring indeed, when one considers that

the majesty of the Most Holy Theotokos is unsurpassed and her glory beyond reach. What other descendant of Eve has ever approached such immeasurable glory? She alone is blessed among women, more honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim. She is holier than all the angels, the Queen of Heaven and the Lady of the Angels, as Saint Nektarios, the wonderworker and myrrh-streamer, so aptly said of her. My beloved, the Theotokos is the greatest and holiest person the earth has ever brought forth.

In holiness she surpassed all the saints, prophets, Fathers, ascetics, martyrs, and apostles. Some have said, of course, that first after the One—after Christ—is the Apostle Paul. No; they must permit me to disagree. They are mistaken. First after the One is the Most Holy Theotokos, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, however much some may wish to dispute it. According to Gregory the Theologian, she is, after God, a god by grace. That is why she is not called merely Saint, but the All-Holy.

The Ever-Virgin, my beloved, is the woman from whom glory springs, because she is the benefactress of the whole human race. Through her singular virtue, God Most High visited the earth, and the world was saved. No other descendant of Eve has ever bestowed, or continues to bestow, such great blessings upon humanity as this tender Mother of God, whom these days bring so close to us. She both suffered and made sacrifices for the salvation of all humanity. She is also the personal benefactress of every Orthodox Christian.

What faithful Orthodox Christian has not been benefited by the Theotokos? What Christian, amid suffering, has not run to her and received miraculous help? When afflictions strike us, do we not seek refuge in her even more readily than in our own mother? Do we not cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos”? Does not the sailor cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” amid the raging sea, when he sees the enormous, menacing waves ready to engulf him? Does not the grief-stricken mother cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” beside the bed of her dying child, after the doctors have left her without hope? Does not the soldier cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” when bullets rain down upon him, enemies surround him, and he is in danger of being taken prisoner?

My beloved, does not the starving orphan cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” when hunger ravages him and he trembles with cold? Does not the father who cannot feed his children cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos”? Did not Heraclius say, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” when he fought the Persians and recovered the Precious Cross? “My Most Holy Theotokos, guard our Greece once again.” Did not Kolokotronis plead with her when Dramalis threatened and he was left alone? Did not Kanaris pray, “My Most Holy Theotokos,” as he held the torch with which he was about to burn the flagship of those of another faith? The unmarried woman cries, “My Most Holy Theotokos”; the married woman, “My Most Holy Theotokos”; the divorced woman, “My Most Holy Theotokos.” You hear it everywhere.

You hear it from huts and mansions, hovels and palaces, factories and skyscrapers, villages and cities, solitary hermitages and clamorous military camps. And why should it not be so? Who else in this world comes to our aid as much as the Most Holy Theotokos, my beloved? She is the mother of us all. That is why we honor and love her—those of us, of course, who truly love her. We dedicate churches and chapels, monasteries and lavras, shrines and metropolitan cathedrals to her. People usually build their most magnificent structures in her name. Her churches adorn the central squares of great cities and the finest places in the countryside.

Iconographers dedicate their most beautiful Byzantine icons to her, and hymnographers offer her the masterpieces of the Church’s hymnody. Chanters and composers create their most moving and lyrical hymns for her, while artists fashion their most wonderful works in honor of the Ever-Virgin. Glorious empresses and renowned beauties have passed across our planet. For a moment they stood at the height of fame, and their names caused a great stir. But before long they sank into obscurity and were forgotten forever. Who knows or remembers them today? No one—absolutely no one. Yet who is unaware of the events in the life of the Most Holy Theotokos?

What believer does not call upon her? The educated know her, but the uneducated also honor her. The powerful revere her, and those in need call upon her. Show me, I beg you, one person who has never heard her name. You will find her icon everywhere. In a particular home you may not find photographs of the family’s parents. Perhaps, because of their poverty, they still eat their food without oil. Yet you will find there the vigil lamp and the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. Why? Because she lived among our forefathers and bestowed blessings upon them, and she does the same for us.

Today she is close to us, and she will remain so until the end of the age. Her miracles have been and still are countless. Yet most people do not know the life and miracles of the Theotokos. They know very little about this person who is exalted above every other person. She is the one whom we love so deeply, yet know so little. This, then, is the reason compelling me to give these talks concerning the person of the Theotokos.

I would like to make one heartfelt appeal concerning this endeavor: may each of us listen prayerfully, learn, and take heed, so that in times of suffering we may run to the Most Holy Theotokos. Let each person be certain that, if he believes and struggles to live as God desires, he will have her help. For, as the hymnographer says, “No one who runs to you for refuge departs from you ashamed, O pure Virgin Theotokos; but he asks for grace and receives the gift that is beneficial to his request.” Therefore, dear listener in Christ, strive to share with others what you hear and learn about this great person, the Theotokos. Do all you can to contribute to the glory of the Most Holy Theotokos, so that knowledge of her may spread and her person may become known. Today, above all, we urgently need to do this, because, sadly, there are people who insult our Most Holy Theotokos. Indeed, very many wretched people blaspheme her in the crudest manner because they do not truly know who she is. Through what you are about to hear, give these people an opportunity to be benefited as well, if they are willing. Besides these unfortunate people, however, there are others who are still worse enemies—you should know this—the heretics.

These heretics attack her with rage and frenzy, even more fiercely than they attack Christ. Look at the many sects and shades of heresy today, going from house to house, and hear the insults they utter against our Most Holy Theotokos.

As soon as they set foot inside a home, their first concern is to throw away the icons of our Most Holy Theotokos, trample them, and burn them. Well, then, are we who love the Most Holy Theotokos and have witnessed so many miracles from her simply to sit with folded hands?

Should we allow all these people to insult our Most Holy Theotokos? And if we do, how could we then dare to ask for her help in the many trials that arise in our lives? How will she protect us at the hour of death from the evil demons? How will we say to her: “Stand beside me as one who is merciful, compassionate, and loving. In this present life, be my fervent protectress and helper, shielding me from the assaults of my enemies and guiding me toward salvation; and at the time of my departure, watch over my wretched soul and drive far from it the dark faces of the evil demons”? Therefore, dear listener, spread what you hear by every means available to you and as widely as you can. Then people will not only be benefited beyond measure in their souls,

but they will also learn how to silence all the heretics.

One awe-inspiring fact about the Virgin is that she is the only woman in human history whose life, ancestry, and mission were revealed so clearly by the prophets centuries before she was even born. In other words, she is a person with a prophetic prehistory, together with our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Precious Forerunner, and the Precious Cross. There are prophecies, symbols, and images concerning the Theotokos that speak of her existence and coming. As we know, the Virgin was born in Nazareth, a small town in Palestine. Her father was Joachim, and her mother was Anna. Both of them, as

we are told, were devout, virtuous, and blameless before God, keeping His commandments. To understand their holiness, we need only remember that they are called righteous, meaning that they possessed all the virtues. We should also remember that, at the end of every Divine Liturgy, we the faithful ask these two people to intercede with God, that He may have mercy on us and save us. What do we say? “Through the intercessions of the holy and righteous ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna, and of all Your saints.” Yet they bore a great sorrow: even into advanced old age, they had no children—something that, sadly, seems more likely to please people today. But it caused them deep pain.

At that time, childlessness was considered a disgrace and a source of shame. This reproach of barrenness withered their hearts. Joachim and Anna always hoped and always prayed. In their prayers they continually repeated their request that God grant them a child, whom they would dedicate to Him to serve Him. At last their prayer was heard, and God resolved to grant them this great blessing. What happened was astounding. Anna, who was barren, conceived in her advanced old age, and then her prayer became even more fervent. “I thank You, Lord,” she said, “for this great miracle. You grant me a child—

when? Now, when hope had died away. But You, my God, hold life in Your power. For You there are no limits, no barriers to Your might, and no weakness imposed by age or the passing years. And now, though I have grown old, I rejoice with the greatest joy. I thank You, my Lord.” We should indeed understand that this was a miracle beyond nature. But where God wills, the order of nature is overcome. Joachim and Anna had prayed when they were still of childbearing age, but God granted their request in extreme old age, at the time He knew to be right. Had He given them what they asked when they themselves desired it, He would simply have given them a child. But by granting their prayer at the time known to Him, He gave them the Child—the unique daughter destined for His purpose.

Anna gave birth to one daughter only, the Virgin Mary. Her birth caused great wonder. It was a great and marvelous event in Nazareth. Afterward, Mary’s parents went about full of joy and happiness. At every step of their lives, they never ceased to glorify God and thank Him for this great blessing. Truly, their home must have shone with joy. There was no longer any bitterness, sorrow, or heartache there, but joy and gladness. The Virgin’s innocent, childlike eyes gleamed with divine and heavenly light. And how could her parents have known what their daughter would one day become? This great event—the Nativity of the Theotokos—is celebrated by our Holy Church

on September 8. When the Most Holy Theotokos was three years old, her parents took her and presented her at the Temple in Jerusalem. They had dedicated her to God when they prayed that He would grant them a child. Now they joyfully kept that promise, unlike us, who so often make promises but fail to fulfill them. As you know, we celebrate the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple on November 21. This too came about by God’s providence, for she had to be protected and remain blameless, untouched by the evil of the world. And surely she could not have been protected anywhere but in the Temple. In the Temple

the Theotokos remained for many years. There, it seems, the wise priests of that time taught her the will of God. Perhaps she also learned enough letters to read the word of God in the Old Testament. She served within the Temple and prayed there. In that divine setting, her heart and soul were filled with the light of Heaven, and her faith in God took deeper root. She was modest, humble, and possessed patient endurance. She never allowed evil to draw near her. Every sinful thought fled far away. She was spotless, undefiled, immaculate—the pure Virgin, just as we call her in our hymns. After she had passed her tenth year, the young girl...

was no longer permitted to remain in the Temple. She then returned to her home in Nazareth. It appears that her parents died around that time. Consider the difficult circumstances faced by this orphaned young girl. This modest maiden lived alone, without anyone to protect her. Yet she clearly took refuge in God and sought His protection through prayer. He surely strengthened her in life and guarded her from danger. This is what each of us must do today, especially the young. How many moral dangers surrounded her at that critical stage of her life! How many snares of corruption lay all around her in that depraved city, among its ill-tempered inhabitants!

Those words of Holy Scripture became proverbial: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” And yet the greatest good did come from there: our Most Holy Theotokos. This orphaned young girl struggled and succeeded in remaining blameless, spotless, and untouched by evil. She was a pure white lily amid that foul environment, undefiled in body and pure in soul. Her thoughts were always raised on high; her every intention was directed toward Heaven. Her purpose was to please God, save her soul, and enter Paradise, as we would say—the Paradise from which Eve’s sin had driven us. Not even for a moment, it seems, did she depart from her divine calling or from the course

she had set for her life. Not for a single moment did her thoughts turn away from the heavenly Father. This orphaned maiden spent her days in the company of God. She guarded her life with great care and worked to support herself. She adorned herself not with costly garments, bracelets, and ornaments, but with immeasurable humility, boundless goodness, self-restraint and purity, patient endurance and perseverance. She climbed ever higher upon the steps of holiness. This orphaned maiden evidently closed her ears to every false invitation offered by what people call “the good life.” She had neither eyes nor ears for the filth of Nazareth. She lived in the fear of God, her heart trembling lest she lose the

priceless treasure of her purity and virginity. She lived a holy life and paid no attention to the mockery, taunts, and scorn of those supposedly enlightened people who claimed to know how life should be lived. At dawn, at nightfall, and at every hour and moment, she prayed with divine serenity to the Father, her heavenly Guardian, asking Him to preserve her. And indeed, He preserved her from personal sins. In the deepest part of her soul, she felt an ineffable joy that made her spirit soar. She seemed to herself to be flying lightly, like a feather through the heavens. When she was about fourteen years old,

Divine Providence guided events, and the Virgin was betrothed to a virtuous man named Joseph. Joseph became the Virgin’s betrothed precisely as the fullness of time was drawing near, when the miraculous incarnation of the Word (Logos) of God was about to take place, and the Son of God was about to visit the world as man. Joseph was exceedingly virtuous. Holy Scripture calls him righteous, meaning that he possessed every virtue. Very few people in Holy Scripture are called righteous. Although Joseph’s role was that of a guardian angel, his presence was also necessary to conceal the great Mystery—the Mystery

“kept silent through eternal ages,” as the hymnographer says. If the Virgin had soon been found pregnant, as indeed she was, without a man formally beside her as her betrothed, then according to the Mosaic Law she would have been taken outside the city and stoned. The law commanded it, saying specifically: “You shall bring the maiden outside the camp, and the whole camp shall stone her.” That betrothal was therefore necessary so that Joseph’s presence might conceal Christ’s supernatural birth, deceive Satan, and so forth. But we shall stop here and, God willing, continue next time by her grace.

The good God has granted us once again to be together, so that during this month of August we may speak about this unfathomable person, the Most Holy Theotokos. As you may remember, in our previous talk we spoke about her and how she appeared upon the stage of history. We have now reached, so to speak, the events of the Annunciation. At that time, the world was suffering unbearably. Pain, tribulation, turmoil, anguish, sin, corruption, injustice, and hatred ruled upon the earth. Servants and slaves suffered—and there were very many of them then. The poor went hungry, and people lived in misery. Woe to the world!

Deep darkness covered the earth, and no divine light shone from anywhere. Sin and idolatry reigned everywhere, and Satan was the ruler of this world, “the prince of this world,” as our Lord says. Cruelty and inhuman hatred were everywhere. From one end of the earth to the other, humanity groaned and sought a Redeemer. Mankind waited for Him to come, to save them and deliver them from ignorance and misery. Thousands of years had passed since God had expelled our first parents from Paradise because of their deadly sin. Then, as you know, His voice had been heard foretelling that the offspring of the woman would crush the head of the accursed serpent—that is, Satan, who had deceived Eve.

He said this in Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you”—that is, the serpent, the devil—“and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall watch for your head, and you shall watch for His heel.” When Eve heard these words, she thought that she herself was the woman who would give birth to the avenger. For this reason, she named her first child Cain, a name interpreted as “vengeance.” But she had given birth to nothing other than a murderer. It was another woman whom God foresaw, one who would appear upon the stage of history 5,508 years later. It was the Most Holy Theotokos.

God therefore foretold, my beloved, that the Savior of the world would be born of a woman. He meant the Virgin Mary, who conceived by the Holy Spirit and not according to the natural manner of generation. For, as we know, the man begets and the woman gives birth. Scripture says, “Abraham begot Isaac”; it does not name Sarah. “Isaac begot Jacob”; it does not name Rebecca. “Jacob begot Judah and his brothers”; it does not name Rachel. A man therefore had to be present to account for the pregnancy, though not to assume the role of a father who had sown the seed. Thus the Virgin gave birth without seed and remained forever pure, without a man—the Ever-Virgin. Jesus struck and crushed the

head of Satan on Golgotha through His death on the Cross. Satan crucified Him through his instruments, but this was merely like a blow to His heel, as God had said to him: “And you shall watch for His heel.” Moreover, eight hundred years before the Most Holy Theotokos was born, beloved, the Prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of the Savior and Redeemer. His prophecy is astonishing. He foretold that the Savior would be born of a virgin who had not known a man. This is the meaning of the Hebrew word he used for “virgin”: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel,” which is translated as “God with us.” Yet the years passed, and the anguish of the world grew. Humanity thirsted for love, for goodness,

justice, and peace. It thirsted for the salvation of the soul and for a return to God. Socrates, the wisest of all men, had said to them: “You will continue sleeping unless God, in His care for you, sends someone else.” In other words, we shall remain asleep forever unless God takes pity on us and sends someone to teach us. Then the great announcement of the Savior’s coming—the birth of Jesus, the Lord—arrived suddenly. It did not follow the hierarchy of worldly power. This heaven-sent message, as we might call it, certainly did not go to stately homes, royal residences, or palaces.

It was not announced to kings, rulers, or magnates, nor was it proclaimed by cannon fire. An angel from Heaven brought the message. “The Archangel Gabriel was sent to Nazareth, to a pure Virgin.” He was the messenger of the most momentous news ever known. Quietly and unseen, he descended to earth. Sent by God, he went directly to the Virgin Mary in Nazareth and announced to her the most joyful message ever heard upon the earth. It is said that he met her at a spring that still exists today. Even the steps by which the Most Holy Theotokos went down to draw water can apparently still be seen.

At the spring there is also, to this day, a synagogue where prayer was offered, and it seems that the Most Holy Theotokos combined the drawing of water with prayer. It was there that the Annunciation took place. There the words were heard: “Rejoice, you who are full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.” The holy maiden saw the angel from Heaven and wondered. More than that, she was troubled and shaken. Yet amid the light and radiance of Heaven, her nous—the spiritual intellect—was not dazzled. Instead, “she considered what manner of greeting this might be.” Where had this greeting come from? This was what she pondered. The Archangel then delivered her from her uncertainty, saying: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God.”

“Do not be afraid,” he told her, “for through your virtues you have found grace before God. Behold, you will conceive and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. God will give Him the throne of David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His Kingdom there shall be no end.” This is the passage from which we took the words placed in the Creed: “And of His Kingdom there shall be no end.” But the all-pure maiden, beloved, with the assurance and chastity of an undefiled young woman, asked the angel: “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” How can this happen, since I am not married? Saint Andrew of Crete speaks most beautifully, taking

the place of the Most Holy Theotokos and saying: “Joseph is my betrothed, not my husband. The marriage agreement has gone no further than betrothal. How, then, shall I conceive without marriage? How shall the fruit grow without one to plant the seed? Shall the law of some strange form of childbearing first be found in me? Shall the ancient customs governing women be changed in me?” In other words: Am I to change the laws of nature? Am I to give birth without a man? “Explain the mystery of your words plainly to me, O angel. Tell me how these words will be fulfilled. Reveal to me, little by little, the power of your glad tidings. Let me learn how the impossible can become possible. Let me learn how what has no way forward may find a way. Let me hear how grace, by its authority, renews nature, and how nature serves grace.” And when the Virgin had spoken these words, the angel neither rebuked her nor punished her with silence, as he had Zechariah, but explained how the conception would take place. Zechariah, though he had many examples from earlier times

of barren women who gave birth—such as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Anna—nevertheless did not believe them. For this reason, he was justly condemned. The Virgin, however, had no such example at all: no virgin had ever conceived without relations with a man. Her question, “How shall this be?” was not an expression of unbelief, but a desire to learn how it would happen. She showed this by what she said afterward: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” If she had not believed these words, she would not have said this. Therefore she believed, but she desired a full explanation.

The divinely inspired John Chrysostom answers her most eloquently: “Do not look for the sequence of nature when what is taking place is beyond nature. Do not look for marriage and birth pangs when the manner of this birth is greater than marriage.” “How shall this be,” she asks, “since I do not know a man?” It shall be precisely because you do not know a man. For if you had known a man, you would not have been counted worthy to serve in this ministry. Therefore, believe on account of the very thing that causes you to doubt. You would not have been counted worthy to serve in this ministry—not because Holy Matrimony is evil, he says, but because virginity is greater. The Archangel then resolves her uncertainty, telling her that this will not happen naturally,

as it does among human beings, but supernaturally, through the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit, because the power of the Most High and Almighty God will overshadow her. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” The child who will be born from you will be holy and will be called the Son of God. And so that you may be assured, I tell you that your relative Elizabeth, although advanced in age, has also conceived a son and is now in her sixth month, “for with God nothing will be impossible.” Then the Virgin, evidently filled with deep emotion and fully conscious of the great mission—the great role and supreme honor—

for which God had counted her worthy, said humbly: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” I am the handmaid of the Lord, she tells him, and therefore let it happen as God wills. I am ready to serve His divine plan. These words of Mary also show that the Lord neither coerces nor pressures anyone to become or remain devout, because true freedom consists in accepting Christ and fulfilling His law through love and faith, not through force. Even the slightest violation of this canon, my beloved, is contrary to the true freedom

with which God has endowed mankind. Only the person who submits to the Lord out of love and willingly fulfills His commandments can make spiritual progress. The Virgin is not an unaccountable vessel that passively receives the divine will, but a rational and free person. In humility and faith, she consented to the fulfillment of God’s good purposes. This is why the Evangelist tells us that the Virgin gave her consent freely and willingly. “Let it be to me,” the Virgin says in prayer, and immediately Jesus becomes incarnate within her. It is as though she were saying: “Behold, I stand ready, and there is no obstacle.

My soul is willing, and my womb is ready, for it has been kept untouched for the Creator alone.” Saint Andrew of Crete says: “The handmaid of the Lord, joyful in obedience, gracious in service, ready to receive: ‘Let it be to me according to your word.’” Saint Gregory of Nyssa adds: “‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ As a handmaid, I stand ready for the Master’s command; as clay, I lie in the hands of the potter. As He wills, let His purpose be accomplished in me with authority; as He wills, let Him work within me, in His love for mankind, the miracle of this wondrous conception. Let it be to me according to your word.” Theophylact also says: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Behold, I am a panel prepared for painting. Let the painter paint whatever he wishes; let the Lord do whatever He wills. And Athanasius the Great concludes: “I am a panel upon which an image is being painted. Let the painter paint whatever he desires; let the Lord of all do whatever He wills.” My beloved, the mystery of the Annunciation is something that overwhelms the human mind. It is impossible for a person to comprehend what took place at the Annunciation without first understanding certain essential truths.

A person naturally wonders how and why Christ was born of a virgin, rather than of some other good woman who was perhaps not a virgin. These are reasonable questions for many people. Since we are speaking about this person and the events surrounding her, it would be unfortunate to leave such questions unanswered.

We must bear in mind that in the work of creation two persons stand before us: Adam and Eve. Likewise, in the work of re-creation two persons stand before us: the new Adam, Christ, and the new Eve, the Theotokos. Restoration thus follows the pattern of the Fall. And we ask: When did Eve receive the word of the evil one and bring forth death? While she was still a virgin. In the same way, the Theotokos, while still a virgin, received the word of the Good One and brought forth life. Joseph Bryennios, whom you will surely have heard of, says the following about them: “Eve, while a virgin, was deceived by a false message; Mary, while a virgin, received the good tidings from Gabriel. Eve, having been deceived, became the cause of death; Mary, having received the good tidings, gave birth in the flesh to Him who brings eternal life to all.”

“Eve’s word pointed to the tree of knowledge, through which she drove Adam out of Paradise. The Word who came from the Virgin revealed the Cross as the tree of life, through which He brings Adam and all Adam’s descendants back into Paradise.” And again: “Just as in the beginning God took a rib from a man”—that is, from Adam—“and fashioned a complete human being,” namely Eve from Adam, “so afterward the same God took flesh from a woman”—from the Most Holy Theotokos—“and revealed a complete man,” namely Christ. “And just as Adam, at God’s command, brought forth a woman without the aid of a woman”—that is, Adam brought a woman into being without a woman—“in precisely the same way Mary, with God’s consent, truly gave birth to a man without the aid of a man.” Thus Mary, the Most Holy Theotokos, with God’s help brought a man into being without a man: Christ. And he continues:

“Just as the forefather then offered the foremothers a seedless rib from his own flesh and bones for her formation—without seed, from flesh alone—so now, in return, the daughter of that foremothers repays this debt: from her own all-holy blood she lends seedless flesh to the new Adam, for the refashioning of her forefather.”

The same pattern was preserved in the birth of the new Adam. Just as Adam brought forth Eve without seed, from flesh alone, so now her daughter, the new Eve, the Theotokos, brings forth the new Adam, Jesus, without seed. In this way, so to speak, she repays the debt of her ancestress Eve to Adam. The female sex owes a debt to the man, Adam; and now the Most Holy Theotokos comes and repays it, giving a man in return. There, for the formation of a female hypostasis—a female person—the material was taken from a virgin man. Here, for the constitution of the hypostasis of the God-Man, the conception takes place from a virgin woman.

Thus a virgin man brought forth a woman, and here the Virgin, a woman, now brings forth a man. In other words, just as a woman, Eve, came from a virgin man, Adam, so a man, Christ, came from a virgin woman, the Theotokos. And again, just as Adam brought forth a woman without a woman, so today the Virgin has given birth to a man without a man. For since womankind owes this favor to men—because Adam fashioned a woman without the aid of a woman—today the Virgin has given birth to a man without the aid of a man, repaying Eve’s debt to men. There was therefore a reason, my beloved, why He was born of a virgin and not in some other way. But would you like to hear of still more wondrous things

concerning the conception and birth? Listen. The conception took place without sensual pleasure, and the birth took place without pain. This wondrous thing also occurred at the Lord’s birth because where pleasure has not intervened, pain does not follow. The same Father expresses it beautifully: “There Adam had a rib removed and suffered no pain. Here Mary gave birth to a child and knew no pain. For wherever conception is accompanied by pleasure, birth naturally comes with pain. But where the first had no place at all—that is, sensual pleasure—the second necessarily had no place either.”

The Theotokos is also revealed as both Mother and Virgin. “Who among the Fathers was ever shown to be the mother of God? Who has ever conceived both the Creator and a creature? Who, after conceiving a son, carrying Him in the womb, and giving birth to Him, did not cease to be a virgin? A Virgin before conception, a Virgin in conception, a Virgin during pregnancy, and likewise a Virgin after giving birth—always Ever-Virgin.” Our Lord Jesus Christ was God and man. Anyone who examines His life in the Gospels will discover this. Sadly, the heretics did not recognize the divinity of Jesus in the Gospels, and so they reject it. Yet as man He eats,

as man He is honored, as man He weeps, as man He suffers anguish, as man He prays, and as man He walks. As God He works miracles; as God He walks upon the sea; as God He gives sight to the man born blind; as God He opens graves; as God He raises the dead; as God He casts out demons; and as God He dies at the hour He wills, for “bowing His head, He gave up His spirit,” whereas we first give up our spirit and then bow our head. Saint Proclus, the disciple of the divinely inspired John Chrysostom and Bishop of Constantinople, gives the following definition: “I behold the Mystery, I see the miracles, and I proclaim His divinity. I behold His sufferings, and I do not deny His humanity. For Emmanuel opened the gates of nature

as man, yet as God He did not break the seals of virginity. He came forth from the womb in the same manner as He entered through hearing. He was born in the same manner as He was conceived: He entered without passion and came forth ineffably.” My beloved, we shall stop here again today and, God willing, we shall return to the subject.

Ποιος πιστός Ορθόδοξος δεν ωφελήθηκε από τη Θεοτόκο; Ποιος Χριστιανός στα βάσανά του δεν έτρεξε σε αυτή και δεν βοηθήθηκε θαυματουργικώς; Σε αυτή δεν καταφεύγουμε περισσότερο από τη μητέρα μας στα βάσανα που μας χτυπούν; «Παναγία μου» δεν φωνάζουμε; «Παναγία μου» δε φωνάζει ο ναυτιλλόμενος μέσα στην αγριεμένη θάλασσα, όταν βλέπει απειλητικά τα πελώρια κύματα έτοιμα να τον καταποντίσουν; «Παναγία μου» δε φωνάζει η πονεμένη μάνα κοντά στο κρεβάτι του ψυχορραγούντος παιδιού της, που την απελπίσαν οι ιατροί; «Παναγία μου» δε φωνάζει ο στρατιώτης, όταν του έρχονται βροχή οι σφαίρες και κυκλώνεται από τους εχθρούς και κινδυνεύει να πιαστεί αιχμάλωτος;

Σε αυτήν οι αγιογράφοι αφιερώνουν τις ωραιότερες βυζαντινές εικόνες και οι υμνογράφοι τα αριστουργήματα της εκκλησιαστικής υμνωδίας. Οι ψαλμωδοί και οι συνθέτες δημιουργούν τις περιπαθέστερες και λυρικότερες ψαλμωδίες των. Οι δε καλλιτέχνες συνθέτουν τα πλέον υπέροχα δημιουργήματά των για την Αειπάρθενο. Πέρασαν από τον πλανήτη μας αυτοκράτειρες δοξασμένες, καλλονές φημισμένες. Εμεσουράνησαν προς στιγμήν. Έγινε πολύς θόρυβος γύρω από το όνομά τους. Αλλά σε λίγο έπεσαν στην αφάνεια και ξεχάστηκαν διά παντός. Ποιος τις ξέρει και ποιος τις ενθυμείται σήμερα; Κανείς, μα κανείς. Της Παναγίας όμως τα περιστατικά ποιος τα αγνοεί;

Άμα πατήσουν μέσα στο σπίτι το πόδι τους, η πρώτη τους δουλειά είναι να πετάξουν τις εικόνες της Παναγίας μας, να τις πατήσουν και να τις κάψουν. Ε, λοιπόν, εμείς που αγαπούμε την Παναγία και έχουμε δει τόσα θαύματα από αυτή, θα καθίσουμε με σταυρωμένα τα χέρια;
