Summary

Christians must resist becoming casually familiar with sacred things and instead approach God with reverence, vigilance, and continual self-examination. Salvation is found in the crucified and risen Jesus Christ, whose empty tomb and saints such as Spyridon and John the Russian bear witness to the Orthodox faith and the hope of eternal life. Believers should seek spiritual benefit rather than merely material favors, allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede for them and direct their lives toward salvation and Paradise.

One of the very bad habits found among us Christians, unfortunately, is what we call familiarity born of habit. There are many things a person can and should become accustomed to. But there is one thing to which he must never grow accustomed. He must never become casually familiar with the things of God, because then, however much effort he may make, he is not benefited. What is divine is always divine, and it must always retain a place of honor in our conscience.

We must always stand before it with awe, if we wish to be benefited rather than harmed. Habit, then, has deceived us, and we fail to pay attention to certain fundamental matters and teachings. A person does not need to know many things if he wishes to be saved, if he truly wishes to succeed and return to the beloved homeland that is Paradise. If he pays attention to a few things, puts them into practice, and makes them part of his lived experience, he will surely fulfill his purpose here. A person’s time

on earth is short and uncertain, and so he must always make good use of it. He must never be deceived into thinking that tomorrow belongs to him; not even today belongs to him. Therefore, while he has the day before him, he must make good use of it. A person does not need to know all the books of the Church, though it is a good thing if he can know them. But if he cannot, he can confine himself to certain fundamental matters and take care to put them into practice. For it is not enough for a person to worship God in his own way; he must worship Him as God desires. He must always ask himself: “Am I doing what He wants?

Am I doing what I merely think is right?” For we always walk according to our own “I think,” and not according to the will of God.

In Holy Scripture there are certain details which, if a person is willing to study them carefully and put them into practice, will assure him that one day he will reach the place where our Lord Jesus Christ has gone before us as our Forerunner and now awaits us. Today I was given this opportunity.

For together with you, I too heard certain things because of this day and the saints whom the Church has brought to our remembrance. We came here to venerate them, but also to examine ourselves: “My God, am I putting into practice the few words You spoke to me today? Have I made anything of them in my life, or do I merely come to bring a candle to Your Church, a little oil, a prosphoron, and things of that kind? Do I have any connection with those whom You call blessed today in Your Gospel law? Have I put any of these things into practice?” For the saints whom we venerate today put this entire sequence of the Beatitudes into practice. This is an examination of conscience: are we paying attention, or are we not? The troparia and dogmatic hymns are chanted, yet we know nothing about them. The Apostle speaks and proclaims, and we say, “They are reading the Apostle.” The Gospel is read, and we say, “They are reading the Gospel.” But what are they saying? To whom are they saying it?

Do any of the things being said place an obligation upon us? Because of habit—this steamroller of habit—we have been deceived. We never delve deeply into these matters, and one day we will find ourselves standing before God. On account of the feast of another saint whose holy relics are preserved, Saint John the Russian, who is celebrated today at Prokopi in Euboea, this beautiful Gospel reading from our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount has been appointed, because this man put the entire garland of the Beatitudes into practice in every respect. Have you ever reflected on that? Do you not read the Gospel?

Do you read, for instance, the Acts of the Apostles or the Apocalypse? Do you not read the Prophets? Take the time to read chapters five, six, and seven of Matthew. Read the Sermon on the Mount of our Christ, and then set yourselves to practice as much of it in your lives as Christ grants you the grace to practice. Then be assured that you will obtain the promise. If these few words in those three chapters—which contain the whole exalted work to be done upon the human soul—are not put into practice, then it will not matter how many churches we build or chandeliers we hang, how many orphans we feed, naked people we clothe, or suffering people whose tears we soothe. Whatever we may do, if we do not put these words into practice, we have no place in the Kingdom of Heaven.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Which of us is poor in spirit? Raise your hand. Who are the poor in spirit? Are they people whose nous, their spiritual intellect, is somehow impaired? Are they the sick? No. They are those whose faculties are fully sound, yet who never trust in themselves and never allow themselves to believe that they know anything or that anything they possess—whether knowledge, learning, or wisdom—is their own. Do we have such people today? We do not. Do people even intend to become like this? No. Are they working to attain any of it? No. Why? Because one excuse arises here and another there. We think it is only theory. “Blessed are those who mourn,” He said today. He did not call blessed those who do not mourn. But whom did He mean?

Those who wear black? Those who have buried a wife or husband? Are these the mourners? No! They are not the mourners. The mourners are those who practice penthos, mourning for their sins because they have grieved God. “God was crucified for my sins, and I continue to sin.” That is the one who mourns, not the person dressed in black. Wearing black is fashionable today; it has nothing to do with this. The true mourner grieves because God gave him time, brought him from nonbeing into being, and helped him to become god by grace, yet he did not attain theosis. Worse still, he blasphemed the blood that God shed in order to restore and save him. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Where else has such a thing ever been heard—that the peacemaker will become a son of God? And why does He give him this title? Nowhere else did He say

“they shall be called,” because He Himself is the great Peacemaker, and whoever becomes like Him will also be, by grace, a child of God. Have we made peace? Are we at peace with God? Are we at peace with our fellow human beings? For there are two kinds of peace. The service says, “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” It begins, “In peace let us pray to the Lord,” and then, “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” A person must continually strive to be at peace with God and with his neighbor. There are two commandments: “You shall love your God and your neighbor as yourself.” Do we have any connection with these things? Are we at peace with God? “But what issue do I have with God? I do not know.”

Have you put up another partition between you and Him? The dividing veil existed in the Old Testament. It was sin that man had placed between himself and God, separating him from God. Christ came and broke down the dividing wall. He was crucified and opened the way—opened it so widely that even the greatest sinner could pass through. And yet we place sin between ourselves and God once again. Whenever sin comes between you and God, whether in word, deed, or thought, you have separated yourself from God. There is no peace with God. To make peace, you must acknowledge your sin, practice metanoia and repent, and confess. You must do so through the authority left by the Holy Spirit at the Resurrection: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” In this way you must be cleansed and make peace once again with God, and then make peace with your neighbor. Refusing even a greeting, holding a grievance, going to court, harboring hatred—

all these things stand in the way. When both kinds of peace are present, then you resemble Christ. Who takes an interest in this? Who makes it his calling? Who goes and makes himself a bridge to reconcile two people—a married couple, two friends, two neighbors, any two human beings? Who steps between them? Who will sometimes even pay money so that two people may be reconciled over some minor dispute? Who does such a thing? It is easy to light candles for ten or twenty drachmas, or even five. Such things cost little and cause no pain. But will you go and ask forgiveness? Will you greet the person who insulted you or treated you unjustly? That you will not do. You will not approach a person whom you regard as sinful and condemned to Hell. In what way, then, do you resemble God? How can you say, “Our Father, who art in Heaven,” when you bear no likeness to the Son? If, therefore, a person were willing to pay attention,

to enter the Church without coming merely out of habit, without treating churchgoing as a pastime, without coming out of snobbery or to display his knowledge, his clothing, and so forth, then he would be greatly benefited. My beloved, I did not come forward to deliver learned theology, but simply to remind you of something that also reproves my own conscience when we find ourselves in the Church of Christ, especially at such moments and before such holy altars. We need to pray: “My Christ, I beg You, awaken me from the stupor of this habit.” We are perishing, because everything is being shaken, and yet our Christ persists, through His Church, in reminding the world of the truth. Yes, a person is always justifying himself.

He always justifies himself, his own people, those who sin with him, those who feast at his expense, and those who join in his revelry. He issues each of them—himself included—a certificate declaring that everything is in order. But that certificate is accepted nowhere. Just as a person sets his watch by the observatory, so he must set the watch of his soul and his faith by the observatory of Christ. The Church of Christ has great luminaries, great stars, and guiding stars like the North Star. People should take their bearings from them—not merely for their life and course here in the world, but for their return to Heaven, to the Kingdom of Heaven. Every person believes in something.

Those who claim the greatest unbelief are often the most credulous. There are no atheists in the world, regardless of whether they believe in the true God. Some may fashion a serpent and believe in it; others believe that cows are gods; still others believe in the sun. There are no atheists. But who believes in the true God? Who obeys Him? Who lives Him out, so that even while still in this world he is already registered as a citizen of the life to come? That is the issue. That is what should concern a person—not saying, “I am religious, I attend church, I make the sign of the Cross,” while discussing fashion as I walk through the church. That is habit, and a bad habit. It deceives a person. One day he will awaken, when the ground beneath his feet is shaken, but it will be his last day—like the mole, which sees only on its final day—

and then he will receive no benefit at all. Some people believe in their own way. Some believe in a higher being, others in a higher power, others in God, and some even believe in Christ. None of them is saved on that account alone. The one who believes in Jesus the Crucified, Jesus of Nazareth, will be saved. The one who does what Jesus says will be saved. Not just any Jesus saves. It is the Crucified One, the Nazarene, the One proclaimed by the angel: “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen; He is not here.” It is this Jesus, this religion, this faith—whose Leader has an empty tomb.

We Orthodox, above all, have received great mercy, because He has given us compasses and guiding stars and has left us the emptiness of the tomb so that we may believe in Him. All the so-called founders of religious systems—not true religions—remain bound in their burial shrouds. Whether he is called Buddha, Muhammad, Zoroaster, Pope, Luther, Russell, or anything else, each remains bound in his shroud. Only Jesus, the Son of Mary, the Crucified One, the Nazarene, the Head of the Orthodox Church, has an empty tomb: “He is not here.” The grave could not hold Him. He conquered death, descended into the depths of Hades, and overcame death.

He set us free here and gave us eternal life and great mercy. He has also given us assurance in various ways, so that we might be helped. Today we are called not merely to believe, but even to know through what stands before us. At this very moment, for example, we stand before Saint Spyridon. Does he not reprove your conscience? Does he not reprove mine? Are people not called to examine their faith? Is he not proof that our Christ does not accept just any faith? Not every road leads to Heaven; there is only one road. Does this not make an impression on you? Does it not move you that Christ has preserved him here for sixteen hundred years, so that people may pass by and see, gaining knowledge as well as faith, and reconsider what they believe? Is this not further proof that God does not accept just any faith, anything man invents, or every human opinion?

He insists: “I shed My blood for one truth, one religion, one faith.” Does nothing move you in these days? Do you not feel the very ground of your faith giving way beneath your feet? Are we not in danger in these days, both as a Church and as a faith? If we do not awaken and take action, calling upon the champions of Orthodoxy to stand beside us, then how will we be saved and help save others? For the issue is not only that we ourselves should be saved, but that we should also help save those who have been deceived. Do I not climb into your boat to keep you from sinking? Yet tomorrow he will accuse me and say, “Why did you climb in here with me when I was careless? Why did you not remain outside? Might we not have been saved one day?” We bear a great obligation toward Orthodoxy,

We have a great obligation to Christianity, especially in these days and especially when you stand before such holy relics. Does it not strike you that this chain of the Ionian Islands, beginning at the summit of the pyramid here in Corfu and extending down to Zakynthos, forms a boundary between two worlds? Does it not strike you that God has placed five beacons here, so that people may see this dividing line? You know that there are two holy relics here, two in Zakynthos, and another in Kefalonia. Is this because people wanted it? He wanted it, in order to help those who are willing to be helped. A person passes through this earth only once. Woe to him if he does not make good use of this time.

A person must understand that one day he will be evicted, because he is not a permanent resident of the earth, but only a tenant. Our leaders speak of the inhabitants of the earth. But who are its inhabitants? Man is only a tenant here. He did not come to live forever in this world. He came to die, and he dies in order to live. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning of another life, a life that will have no end. Therefore, during this brief time of our sojourn here, we must train ourselves—not in that bad habit, but in watchfulness, examination, and the wise use of time. Tomorrow is not ours. Today is ours, and even today is not truly ours. My beloved, the present does not exist. There is the past, and there is the future.

The present stands upon an imaginary line, on the very edge of a blade. Whatever I say has already entered the past, and whatever I am about to say belongs to the future. Who has promised you that, even a fraction of a second from now, either you or I will still be here? This is why we must have fear. Today is not yours; not even this minute is yours.

Our Christ hung suspended between heaven and earth in order to save us. In the same way, we too are suspended between the past and the future. Paul said, “One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead.” He did not speak of the present. Is there a present? There is no present. You hold nothing in your hand. Your past has gone. The future lies before you, but you do not control it. And yet you have no fear, no concern to prepare, to be watchful, to reconsider certain events in your life, or to make peace with God so that you may stand before Him on that day. This is the fear we should have. We must keep these things in mind and continually ask God: “My God, am I standing near You? How will You regard me? Not because of what I am, but because I belong to You. I was purchased by Your blood. You have made a deposit for me as well in the treasury of divine justice. Where do I stand? What is my condition at this moment? Illumine me.” And when we stand, as I said, before these great stars, let us ask them, “Why has God placed you there?” So that you may guide us, if we are willing to follow.

You see that this is the road leading to the Kingdom of Heaven. Not every faith saves, for human beliefs and man-made religions have only Hell; they do not have Paradise. Paradise belongs to Jesus, the Crucified One, the Nazarene. It belongs to Him who, through His Cross and His sacrifice, extinguished the power and fire of the flaming, revolving sword that had closed the way leading to life, and opened that way through His Cross. This road alone, this faith alone, and this person alone lead people safely into Paradise. Therefore, today I wanted to remind myself as well as to say a few words to all of us: “Take heed, brethren. Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.”

These are matters of our faith. Faith is like the pupil of the eye and admits no interference. Christ drained the cup to its very dregs and shed all His blood, to the very last drop, in order to seal this truth and give it to us so freely. A person need only be willing to set aside his ego and personal ambitions and submit himself to Christ, the only guide, who through His servants will lead us into the Kingdom of Heaven. Today is, in a certain sense, a continuation of yesterday. It is closely joined to the day of Pentecost.

The person who played the central role yesterday was the Holy Spirit, who descended upon us. It is He whom we celebrate today and who has given us this opportunity to keep the feast.

This event is as joyful as the event of Pascha, because the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ are equal in divinity; one might even think of it as another Pascha. Our Holy Church has surrounded this joyful event with an entire week of rejoicing.

Just as the Church surrounded Pascha with Bright Week, a week filled entirely with joy, so from today until the Sunday of All Saints she gives us another joyful week. There is no abstinence except from sin; even Wednesday and Friday are not mournful but joyful days, and the fast is relaxed. We should offer many thanks to God for the Holy Spirit, yet we do not thank Him as we should, because we do not know Him. Our Christians know about God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lady Theotokos, and the saints, but they do not know the Comforter, the Holy Spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit who dwells in the Church. It is He who gives people new birth through water on the day of their Baptism. It is He who cleanses them from the endless sins committed after Baptism. It is He who prepares food for the soul upon the Holy Altar, who cleanses us from sickness, sanctifies the waters and the ends of the earth, and preserves all creation. And yet He has been left in obscurity. People know nothing about the Holy Spirit. There is a beautiful and comprehensive prayer known as “O Heavenly King, the Comforter,” especially fitting for today. It is a prayer addressed specifically to the Holy Spirit, not to God the Father or to the second person of the Holy Trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ. In one phrase it says, “Who art everywhere present and fillest all things.”

“Treasury of blessings and Giver of life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.” The entire work, the entire care of preparing the soul for the Kingdom of Heaven, is, so to speak, in the hands of the Holy Spirit—yet man knows nothing at all about Him. If a person understood that the Holy Spirit is everywhere present, and that even if he hid inside a keyhole or fled to the horn of an ox, the Holy Spirit—that is, God—would still see him, then he would not sin, or at least he would sin very little.

The divine Jesus tells us this, yet man sins chiefly because he has no fear of God. He does not fear, heed, honor, or take God into account. If a person truly reckoned with God and knew that God saw him at the very moment he sinned, he would not sin, or at least he would sin very little. You know what precautions a person takes in order to sin: “Let no one see us; let no one hear us; let us tell no one; let us leave no traces. Let it be dark and deserted; let us be alone and concealed.” Yet all these things are done, discussed, and carried out before the Holy Spirit—that is, before God. If a person learned only the prayer “O Heavenly King” and put it into practice in his life, he would not merely be saved and return to Paradise; he would enter into the harmony of Paradise.

This prayer is always said first. Whatever prayer or service the Church is about to begin, she begins with “O Heavenly King.” She calls upon the Holy Spirit to come and help. A person cannot even pray without the power and grace of the Holy Spirit. When Paul writes to the Romans, in the eighth chapter, he says, “The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” He speaks to the Father about what truly benefits our souls. We pray and fill the air with words. We pray for material things: that little Katina may pass her examinations, that little George may succeed, that the father may have a safe journey, or that grandfather may recover. These are the things we seek and pray for.

We do not pray for the soul. But the Holy Spirit is the one who prays to God on behalf of every person—if that person allows Him—asking for what truly benefits the human soul. It is as though He were saying to God the Father: “Do not pay attention to the seaweed this man is talking about. He is foolish and does not know what he is asking. He asks for things like those washed up on the shore. He talks about cornstalks, not pearls; he does not speak about his soul.” When the Holy Spirit sees a person’s ignorance but also his good intention, He prays to God that the person may receive, in due measure,

not what benefits him materially, but what benefits him spiritually, because the Holy Spirit

has no other purpose in this world than to prepare souls for the Kingdom of Heaven, even though He also sustains this material world. For if there were no Holy Spirit, there would be no seas, no waters, no life, no natural life, no trees, no birds—nothing at all—because it is He who gives life to all things and preserves them. This is expressed in just a few words. When we pray to God the Father and to Christ, we also speak of the Holy Spirit: “Holy God”—the Father. “Holy Mighty”—the Son, through whom all things were made. “Holy Immortal”—the Holy Spirit, who gives life, brings all things to their proper fulfillment, and sustains everything Christ created. “Have mercy on us.”

Three persons, one essence, one power. The Holy Spirit is God equally with the Father and the Son. The distinction among them is that the Father is the cause of both the Son and the Holy Spirit: He begets the Son and causes the Holy Spirit to proceed. God is without beginning; Christ comes forth from the unoriginate Father and is co-eternal with Him, as is the Holy Spirit. If you count years, you are counting Jesus according to His humanity, because He became man. When we date the years of salvation from Christ—nineteen hundred and eighty years—we reckon from Christ as man, not from Christ as God, because Christ was God and remains God. Before He came into the world, He always existed and was God. Of course, this discussion concerning the Holy Trinity is something incomprehensible to us.

Heretics do not understand it at all, and Jehovah’s Witnesses do not understand it at all. Yet even the Orthodox, if they try to comprehend it exactly as it is, will not be able to, because it is a Mystery. “Mystery” means that my mouth is closed; I cannot say anything. The word comes from a root meaning “I close my mouth.” I cannot explain how it happens. O God! Do you remember when the Archangel told the Most Holy Theotokos that she would conceive mysteriously? The Most Holy Theotokos asked, “How shall this be?” He could not explain how it would happen. He could only tell her what would happen: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” How the Holy Spirit would accomplish this, I do not know. I would have to be the Holy Spirit—or greater than the Holy Spirit—to comprehend the works and the person of the Holy Spirit. Those who attempt to explain

the Mystery of the Holy Trinity are therefore foolish. They all stumbled. Why did Jehovah’s Witnesses become heretics? Why did Arius? Why do people still fall into heresy today? Because they tried to solve the Mystery by their own reasoning. How am I in the Son, and how is the Son in the Father? How does Christ say, “I and the Father are one”? And how does Christ say that when we eat His flesh and drink His blood, He “abides in us,” and we become one with Him?

No one knows how! Yet this is how it happens. And there is a most beautiful teaching in the Gospel according to John: “On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” “On that day you will know”—when you have laid aside the flesh, because the flesh cannot discern spiritual things. So, in the matter of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Spirit, we walk by faith. We cannot perceive Him at this moment, and yet the Holy Spirit is among us. If the Holy Spirit were not present, I could not speak and you could not listen. It is the Holy Spirit who, at this very moment, opens the nous—the spiritual intellect—of a person, examines the heart, and brings sins or other transgressions to remembrance. If the Holy Spirit withdraws, no one can move toward anything good. Evil will prevail, and destruction will be swift and certain. Therefore, we must entreat this Holy Spirit, who abides in the Church, this Comforter, the other Comforter. “I will send you another Comforter,” He said. He spoke these words, and before ten days had passed, the other Comforter came. The first Comforter is Christ. That is why He too is called the Comforter.

“Comforter” means one who consoles: the one who comforts a person and pays his debts. For the Holy Spirit cleanses us. Unless the Holy Spirit cleanses us, no one can be cleansed. As I was saying in the car on our way here, a person’s good works do not pay for his sins. People must confess their sins, so that their good works may also be found acceptable. Otherwise, they will be condemned, and their works will not be taken into account. On the very evening of the day Christ rose in the Resurrection, He stood in their midst while the doors were shut and Thomas was absent. He said to them, “Peace be with you,” and then, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” For what purpose? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Thus, through the Holy Spirit, sins are either forgiven or not forgiven. Consequently, if I have no relationship with the Church,

if I have no relationship with the ministers of the Church, if I have no relationship with those innkeepers who have been given the command and the authority to care for people who have fallen among thieves—if I have no relationship with them and do not make use of what has been given—how can I expect my sins to be cleansed? Sins are not cleansed that way. My dear ones, just as there is a blood bank, and in an emergency we run to find the right blood type and obtain it for the needs of our family, our friends, and others, so there is also a treasury of the Spirit. The Church is the treasury of the Spirit, setting in order the matters of the human soul. Woe to those who remain far from the Mysteries. Woe to those who think the Church is only for Pascha and Theophany—merely to receive the light outside the churchyard and the blessing of water outside the churchyard.

Woe to those who think the Church exists merely to distribute antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, and the artos, and for people to light candles inside. Woe to such people. It would have been better for them not to have been born. It would have been better for them not to have been born. A person must learn what work the Church performs and what the Mysteries of the Church are—above all, the Holy Eucharist. What is it that will now be brought forth to give us His very Body and His very Blood? A little earlier, while we outside were chanting, “We praise You,” the priest inside was praying to God the Father, saying: “Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here offered”—the bread and the wine—“and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ.” Amen. “And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Your Christ.” Amen. “Changing them by Your Holy Spirit.” Amen, amen, amen. “So that, for those who partake, they may be for nepsis, the watchfulness of the soul, and for the forgiveness of sins.”

“For the fullness of the Kingdom, for communion in the Holy Spirit,” and for countless other blessings. Therefore, the person who does not receive Holy Communion does not receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not sold, and the Spirit is not bestowed apart from the Church. The Spirit is given by the Church, above all in Holy Communion. For this reason, if possible, Holy Communion should be received daily. But because we do not want to put an end to our sins, even during the three great fasting seasons of the year, and even at the three great feasts—Pascha, Christmas, and the Dormition of the Theotokos—we do not come prepared to receive Holy Communion. Consequently, the person who does not receive Holy Communion does not possess the grace of the Holy Spirit and therefore is not spiritually in order. And the petition, “For the washing away of transgressions, have compassion on Your creature, O Master,” has not been fulfilled in him.

You are not making use of what was said earlier: “Cleanse us from every stain.” Where am I to find you so that I may cleanse you? You do not come. You blaspheme Christ. You blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos. You steal. You accuse another person. You look upon your neighbor with an evil eye, and so on. You, you, you, you! Where am I to find you so that I may cleanse you? You remain unclean. And then the Church, although she prays that your journey may be blessed, cannot make it a blessed journey at all, because the person refused to make use of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Did you hear what the Apostle said? There are, he says, works of the flesh of which it is shameful even to speak. And truly, if all the things people do every day were named—if one night the black veil we call darkness could be lifted and the roofs taken away, revealing what happens inside people’s homes—what would we see?

What happens in places of entertainment? What happens in the streets? What is happening everywhere? You would clutch your head. You would lose your mind and say, “My God, how do You still endure us? Why do You not shake this filthy dish until nothing is left standing?” But He is long-suffering and abundant in mercy. He waits for the person to come to metanoia, to repent, to return, to bring his sins and have them cleansed, so that He may bless him for the Kingdom of Heaven. It would be easy for Him to rain down fire and brimstone. It would be easy for the abyss to open again, for the floodgates to be opened, and for Him to bring another flood. But what would that accomplish? It would only fill Hell an hour sooner. Yet that is not the purpose of Christ’s coming, nor the purpose of the world. Christ is long-suffering and abundant in mercy. He does not hurry; He waits. Blessed is everyone who makes good use of God’s kindness—that is, who makes use of the weapon called metanoia, repentance,

called confession, so as to receive forgiveness through the Holy Spirit. There are works, then, but there are also fruits. The works of the flesh are shameful even to mention. But the fruit of the Holy Spirit, as Paul writes in another epistle—not to the Ephesians, but to the Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two—is love, meekness, kindness, goodness, self-control, and many other virtues. Who would not want to possess these things? But where can they be found? They are not sold by the pound. They are the produce of a tree called the Holy Spirit. If you do not have the tree—if you do not have an apple tree—how can you expect apples? If you do not have an orange tree, how can you expect oranges? If you do not have an olive tree, how can you expect olives? We are still wild olive trees. We have not yet been grafted, so as to bear the good fruits of the Holy Spirit.

You ask people to give up their faults even though they have no relationship with the Church—or, if they do, it is only formal, not living and organic. People cannot even throw a cigarette, a mere weed, out of their hand, and yet they are called masters. Masters of what? They are slaves to a weed. And they are called ladies. Ladies of what? They are slaves to a weed. They cannot give up a cigarette. That is how things are. The grace of the Holy Spirit does not come. And that is precisely why you cannot restrain anything—not your tongue, not your flesh, not your belly, nothing at all. For the grace of the Holy Spirit alone changes human nature. Things a person loved yesterday, things he imagined he would take with him to the grave, he will despise today, because the grace of the Holy Spirit has entered. Like the mistress of the house, she begins throwing out all the filth from within,

cleansing the eyes of a person so that he may truly see. Paul—a colossus, a giant formed in the knowledge of Christ—had scales upon his eyes. When he encountered Christ, the scales fell from his eyes. When he ceased to be Saul and became Paul, he came and preached the One whom he had persecuted. But he remained in darkness for three days, and then the scales fell from his eyes. So it is with all those who believe their eyes are open while they remain far from Christ: those who think they have succeeded, those who are spiritually asleep, those who have managed to rise in the world and acquire apartments, savings, possessions, marvels, color televisions, and whatever other goods a person may easily obtain—but they do not have Christ. They have scales upon their eyes, and they still have not learned where they came from, why they came, or where they are going.

στη γη είναι λίγος και αβέβαιος, γι’ αυτό πάντοτε πρέπει να τον εκμεταλλεύεται. Να μην ξεγελαστεί ποτέ ότι το αύριο είναι δικό του· ούτε η σήμερον δεν είναι δική του. Πρέπει, λοιπόν, εφόσον έχει τη μέρα μπροστά του, να την εκμεταλλεύεται. Δεν είναι ανάγκη να γνωρίζει ο άνθρωπος όλα τα βιβλία της Εκκλησίας, που, αν μπορεί να τα γνωρίζει, είναι αγαθόν. Αλλά, εάν δεν μπορεί να τα γνωρίζει, θα μπορεί να περιοριστεί σε ορισμένα βασικά θέματα και να φροντίσει να τα εφαρμόσει. Διότι δεν είναι αρκετό με τον τρόπο του ο άνθρωπος να λατρεύει τον Θεό του, αλλά όπως ο Θεός θέλει, και πάντοτε να τον απασχολεί και να λέγει: «Άραγε κάνω αυτό που Αυτός θέλει;

Διότι μαζί σας κι εγώ άκουσα ορισμένα πράγματα λόγω της ημέρας και των Αγίων που υπενθύμισε η Εκκλησία σε εμάς, που ήρθαμε εδώ να προσκυνήσουμε και να πάρουμε και έλεγχο: «Θεέ μου, τα πέντε λόγια που μου είπες σήμερα, εγώ τα εφαρμόζω; Έχω τίποτα φτιάξει εγώ από αυτά ή στέκομαι απλώς να φέρω ένα κερί στην εκκλησία Σου, να φέρω λίγο λάδι, ένα πρόσφορο και τα τοιαύτα; Αυτά τα οποία Εσύ μακαρίζεις σήμερα από τον ευαγγελικό Σου νόμο, εγώ έχω τίποτα σχέση μαζί τους; Έχω εφαρμόσει τίποτα εξ αυτών;» Διότι οι Άγιοι, οι οποίοι προσκυνούνται σήμερα, έχουν εφαρμόσει ολόκληρον αυτήν τη σειρά των Μακαρισμών. Ο έλεγχος συνειδήσεως: προσέχουμε, δεν προσέχουμε; Ψάλλονται τα τροπάρια, τα δογματικά, εμείς δεν ξέρουμε τίποτα απ’ αυτά. Ομιλεί ο Απόστολος και κηρύττει· «τον Απόστολο λένε». Λέγεται το Ευαγγέλιο· «το Ευαγγέλιο λέγεται». Μα τι λένε; Για ποιον το λένε;

Αν έχουμε εμείς καμιά υποχρέωση από αυτά τα οποία λέγονται; Λόγω της συνήθειας, ο οδοστρωτήρας αυτός της συνήθειας μας έχει ξεγελάσει και δεν εμβαθύνουμε ποτέ τα θέματα και θα βρεθούμε αντιμέτωποι απέναντι του Θεού μίαν ημέρα. Εξαιτίας της εορτής ενός άλλου αγίου λειψάνου, του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Ρώσου, που σήμερα εορτάζει στο Προκόπιον της Ευβοίας, έχει τοποθετηθεί αυτό το ωραίο Ευαγγέλιο από την επί του όρους ομιλία του Κυρίου μας, διότι ο άνθρωπος αυτός εφήρμοσε κατά πάντα αυτήν την αρμάθα των Μακαρισμών. Σας απασχόλησε ποτέ; Μη διαβάζετε το Ευαγγέλιο;

Μακάριοι οι πτωχοί τω πνεύματι. Ποιος είναι πτωχός τω πνεύματι από εμάς; Σηκώστε το χέρι επάνω. Ποιοι είναι οι πτωχοί τω πνεύματι; Αυτοί οι οποίοι έχουν κάποια ζημιά στον νου; Είναι οι ασθενείς; Όχι. Αυτοί που τα έχουν τετρακόσια, μα δεν πιστεύουν ποτέ τους, δεν αφήνουν να πιστέψουν ποτέ τους ότι ξέρουν τίποτα, ότι έχουν, ότι είναι δικό τους, είτε γνώση είτε επιστήμη είτε σοφία, ότι είναι δικό τους. Έχουμε τέτοιους ανθρώπους σήμερα; Δεν έχουμε. Τι είναι να γίνουνε; Ούτε. Εργάζονται να φτιάξουν τίποτα; Ούτε. Γιατί; Διότι από εδώ βγαίνει και από εκεί βγαίνει. Νομίζω ότι είναι θεωρία. «Μακάριοι οι πενθούντες», είπε σήμερα. Δεν μακάρισε τους άλλους, τους μη πενθούντες. Ποιους δηλαδή;

Εδώ δεν χρησιμοποιείς εκείνο που λέει γρηγορότερα, που λέγει «να καθαρίσεις εμάς από πάσης κηλίδος». Πού να σε βρω να σε καθαρίσω; Εσύ δεν έρχεσαι, εσύ βλασφημάς τον Χριστό, εσύ βλασφημάς την Παναγία, εσύ κλέβεις, εσύ κατηγορείς την άλλη, εσύ βλέπεις στραβά με τα μάτια σου τον άλλον και λοιπά. Εσύ, εσύ, εσύ, εσύ. Πού να σε βρω να σε καθαρίσω; Μένεις ακάθαρτος. Και τότε η Εκκλησία, παρότι δέεται να είναι μακαρία οδός, δεν είναι καθόλου μακαρία οδός, διότι ο άνθρωπος δεν ήθελε να χρησιμοποιήσει τη χάρη του Πνεύματος του Αγίου. Ακούσατε τι είπε ο Απόστολος; Υπάρχουν, λέγει, έργα της σαρκός που αισχρόν εστι και λέγειν. Και πράγματι, αν ονομαστούν αυτά που γίνονται κάθε μέρα από τους ανθρώπους και αν ήταν δυνατόν να σηκωθεί ένα βράδυ αυτό που λέγεται πέπλος μαύρος, νύχτα, και να ξεσκεπαστούν τα κεραμίδια, τι γίνεται μέσα στα σπίτια;
