Summary
Christians should not expect worldly ease, because following God involves discipline, opposition, suffering, and preparation for eternal life. Believers must place Christ at the helm of life and row with both faith and works, since either one without the other leaves the soul unable to advance. Earthly life is temporary, and every Christian is called to become a light, make the household a domestic church, receive the holy mysteries worthily, and enter the Kingdom of Heaven among the saints.

We were given an opportunity, if we were attentive, to learn certain things that are essential for a Christian. Many people follow what they call God’s path, yet things do not go well for them.
They hold the opinion—and even make the demand—that if they follow God’s path, everything ought to go well for them. There should be no obstacle, no adversity, no hardship, no illness—nothing at all to cast a shadow over their lives. This is wrong. The very fact that you are following God’s path is enough to turn all the malice of Satan and the world against you. It is a grave mistake for someone who follows God’s path to seek rewards in this world.
Indeed, many people do not want to follow God’s path because God disciplines His own. Many times He takes them by the ear, and they do not like that; but they are wrong. It is better for a person to be chastened temporarily in this world than to suffer in Hell eternally in the world to come. There is a Gospel passage in which Christ performed an extraordinary miracle, as you know, have heard, and surely have read. With five loaves and a few small fish, He fed twenty-five thousand people: five thousand men, besides women and children. And twelve baskets were left over.
It was as though each of the Apostles was made to carry a basket, so that they would learn never to say that a place is desolate when Christ is there. Night fell. When the people saw that He had performed such a miracle, and did not understand that God Himself stood before them, they decided to proclaim Him king. Christ avoided this. He wanted none of their applause, their cries of “Bravo!” or “You are the one we want!” He dispersed them at once. “You, quickly, get into the boat and cross Gennesaret to the other side.” He immediately dismissed the rest of the people, and then went up the mountain, where He remained alone in prayer. The Apostle Mark says that, from where He was praying on the mountain,
He could see the disciples struggling at the oars, with the wind against them, in fear and anguish. He saw them. It is a great comfort to know that Christ sees us in our difficulties. It brings immense consolation. Woe to those who fail to see that Christ sees them in their afflictions. Sadly, there are people like those who build a house without doors or windows and then live inside it in darkness. These are the unbelieving and the self-centered, the people of the world and of the flesh. They shut Christ and the faith outside. These are the wretched people who do not realize that He sees them.
They even commit sin as though He did not see them. Yet how clearly He sees them! They simply do not realize that He does. In affliction, a person should take comfort, look upward, and say: “My Christ, You see that I am in pain. My Christ, You see that I suffer. You see that I am persecuted, insulted, and exploited. You see me.” And He will nod His head to show that He does indeed see you. It is a great comfort to know that Christ sees you in your affliction. Mark says plainly that He saw them being tossed by the waves, yet He left them there. Why did He leave them? Unless a person passes through bitterness in this world, he does not truly know the world. Unless he experiences illness, poverty, and persecution,
he does not truly know the world. The world is not what it appears to be. Its true nature is revealed only when a person passes through these things. So Christ left the disciples there, that they might gain experience and learn obedience. They had not gone into the storm by themselves. They had not entered the sea of their own accord to struggle throughout the night—which is to say, throughout their whole lives. They had not gone on their own; Christ had sent them. They were obeying Christ. But because Christ had sent them, was He also obliged to command the winds to be still? Since His disciples were crossing, should they not sweat, grow weary, or suffer? No. You too will sweat, grow weary, and suffer in this world. Do not expect rest in this world if you wish to find rest in the world to come.
Christ often grew weary in this world. Paul labored tirelessly, and all the Apostles plowed the whole inhabited world. How, then, can we expect always to ride in comfort, with angels fanning us so that nothing troubles us? Are you a Christian? Expect hardships. Have you resolved to please God? Prepare your soul for temptation.
What comforts me is this: they did not turn the sails around, go back, and say to Him, “We are drowning. How can we go on?” No. They stayed out on the sea, fighting against the wind. A mile and a half—do you know what that means? About two thousand meters. Twelve men rowed until daybreak and could make no progress. But neither did they turn back. This is a great lesson: never turn back when you are doing what is right.
Christ approves what you are doing; the Church approves it; and His Gospel approves it. When a person tries to cross this foul-smelling sea—for that is what life is, a filthy sea—who makes it filthy? We ourselves and those closest to us. Many times a mother makes her child’s life bitter. A husband, a wife, a mother-in-law, a neighbor, or a colleague may place obstacles in your way. People oppose you and try to keep you from following God’s path. These are the people who pollute the sea. Blessed are those who persevere. They hear such people, but they do not obey them. They obey only the One whom they honor and take seriously,
the One to whom they will give an account one day. He will summon them to account. The storm of this world is fierce for a Christian. From the moment a person chooses obedience to Christ and begins to walk Christ’s path, he must be prepared to receive every slap, every mockery, and every stone this world can throw. Yet this is also consoling and beautiful. Which trees do children throw stones at? The trees that bear fruit. Would a child throw stones at a walnut tree with no walnuts? Would he throw stones at an orange tree with no oranges? A tree is stoned because it bears fruit.
Should it seem strange, then, if they mock you because you have not surrendered your virginity? If they mock you because you are faithful and have children? If they mock you because you remain faithful to your wife, or because you, as a wife, remain faithful to your husband?
You are following God’s path because, being a girl, you did not try to become a man, and being a man, you did not try to become a girl. Do not be troubled if they mock you. Do not be troubled if they refuse to give you their certificate of approval. You do not need it anyway; their certificate is accepted nowhere. Whatever the world may say, and whatever Satan may say, it carries no weight anywhere. It is Christ’s certificate of approval that counts. Your concern should be to abide with Him in eternity. Christ left the disciples there, as He sometimes leaves us, and came to them toward daybreak. In other words, those men had spent three quarters of the night in torment. Then, at daybreak, He approached them. They found His approach strange, and a discussion arose—I do not know whether you noticed it.
At daybreak they saw Christ walking upon the sea. They were terrified, but He said, “Do not be alarmed; do not be afraid. It is I.” Peter, with his childlike soul, said, “If it is You, command me to come to You upon the waters.” And did Christ not command him? Peter leaped out and began walking upon the sea. Is it easy for water to become firm beneath a man’s feet? The most extraordinary things happen when Christ commands. Do not find such things strange. Do not rely solely on human reason. Do not rely solely on science. Do not stop at the claim that one plus one must equal two. For Christ, one plus one does not merely equal two; for Christ, one plus one can equal a thousand. Let every doctor sign against you. Let every scientist sign against you. Let the whole world condemn you—only may Christ not condemn you. When Christ smiles upon you, all the others flee and hide, whoever they may be, like cockroaches when the light is turned on.
See how the cockroaches disappear. In exactly the same way, all these others disappear when Christ smiles upon you. That is what matters. As long as Peter obeyed Christ’s voice and kept his eyes fixed on Christ, he walked upon the sea. But for a moment Peter turned his gaze away. Great, savage waves were coming to engulf him. Looking toward them, he became weak in faith and began to sink. When did he begin to sink? When he looked at the waves instead of Christ. Have you taken your eyes off Christ and begun making compromises? Woe to you—you have already begun to sink.
Take care! Be watchful, come to your senses, repent, and cry out. He is beside you, waiting for you. Peter was a man of the sea; if you had opened his veins, perhaps the water of the Sea of Tiberias would have flowed out instead of blood. Yet now he did not even have the strength to make two strokes and reach the boat. “Lord,” he cried, “save me!” Away from Christ, a person loses all sense and no longer understands what is happening. He turns to fortune-tellers, mediums, and witches. He commits murder, kills his own children—who knows what a person may do? He goes mad, loses himself, and sinks when he takes his eyes off Christ. But if he repents and says, “My Christ, yes, I did this. I was the one who turned my eyes away. Help me,” Christ stands ready to help him, without asking why he did it. Many people still remain far from Christ, unrepentant and without Confession, because they keep dwelling on their sins. Christ does not ask you why you sinned.
Christ asks you, “Have you fallen? Would you like to rise again?” That is what matters. Yet many of us, in our misery, do not want to rise. Why? “Because I will fall again.” Really? Is that what you do when you fall in the road? Do you remain sitting there because you might fall again next year? No. You get up, bind your wounds, and continue on your way, even if you fall again five meters farther on. It is the same in the Christian life.
Peter had the courage—or, more precisely, the honesty—to cry out, and Christ helped him. There is His hand, ready at every moment, right beside us. But we hesitate. “Why did you lose faith,” He asks, “and begin to sink?” “Because I am human. I saw the waves; I saw poverty, illness, and the malice of the world.” Ah, was I attentive? No, I was not attentive enough, and I fell.
Call for Me; you need only ask Me. Let me ask you this: a ship is sinking, and a rescue vessel is two kilometers away. But in its pride, the sinking ship does not transmit an SOS. Will the vessel that could save it come to its rescue? No, it will not. Why? Because no signal was sent. So it is with Christ. It is shameful and tragic that people perish beside the harbor of mercy. Through metanoia—repentance—and a sincere Confession, they could gain eternity, yet in their pride they refuse. Perhaps they do not believe Christ is truly so good, so forgiving, and so guileless in His love for mankind,
because in our malice we are not like that. We will do something only if we stand to gain from it. Even if we say good morning to our angel, we do so because we expect some benefit. But God is not like that. At once Christ says to Peter, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Then He takes hold of him and lifts him up. John the Evangelist says that they were about to receive Christ into the boat there upon the sea. And do you know what happened? Read the sixth chapter of John. The boat was suddenly at the harbor for which they were bound. They intended to take Christ aboard, but before they could do so, the boat reached by itself the destination that twelve men had been unable to reach throughout the whole night. This is Christ. Bring Christ into your life. Bring Christ into your boat. Bring Christ into your whole being, and you will see miracles—things you could never accomplish through your own knowledge,
What you could not accomplish with your money, your politicians, or your pride, you will accomplish with Jesus the Crucified, Jesus of Nazareth. I would like to believe this, because only a small number of indifferent and unbelieving people come here. All the rest of us believe in Christ, some more and some less. And I would say to you now that I am speaking from personal experience, and you understand me. You know how your life changed from the moment you brought Christ into it. It is a terrible thing for someone not to have Christ at the helm. If Christ is not at the helm, Satan will be, and he certainly will not lead that person where he ought to go.
He will lead him somewhere else—certainly to shipwreck. We are human. When someone is sailing and a raging sea crashes over him, what does he do? He takes a tin and bails out the water. He keeps throwing out the water that might sink him, even while the fury of the sea drenches him. I remember doing this myself on deck. The sea was overwhelming our little boat, and the storm was stronger than we were. I kept bailing out the water with a tin, and that is how we reached dry land. I was soaked through, but we were saved. Life is a voyage, and Christ must be the captain at the helm. Our boat must have two oars: on one is written “faith,” and on the other, “works.”
It is not enough merely to believe, because many believe. Those who believe most surely are the demons. As James says, the demons believe—and tremble. We do not tremble. We believe, light a candle, and then go on doing whatever we please. No. We must believe rightly and act rightly. Our deeds are what demonstrate that our faith is sure and true. So we need both oars. If you merely believe and pull with one oar, the boat will go round and round. And if you merely perform good deeds, saying, “I do good, but I do not go to Church; I do not confess; I do not receive Holy Communion; I do not have children; I do not fast; and I blaspheme Christ,” and so on, the result is the same. There are many good people who will even share their bread, yet they also blaspheme Christ. Their boat also goes round and round. Both are needed: faith and works,
so that the boat may move forward, sail a straight course, as we say, and reach its destination. This is what these events teach us. Therefore, if you are Christians, do not ask Christ to take every bitterness away from you. You need it. A person is safer when close to suffering and need than when free from suffering.
When suffering departs, when the sickbed is removed from the home, Christ becomes smaller in our eyes, and the Most Holy Theotokos becomes smaller; all of them become smaller. But when there is suffering, need, and insecurity, then Christ is as great to us as He truly is, and the Most Holy Theotokos is as great as she truly is. This is something we must accept; it is for our benefit. Most of us came here because we were in need.
We came to this monument of Orthodoxy, this Pool of Siloam. Those who believe and have cleansed their vessel through metanoia—repentance—and confession receive from God. Those who have stopped sinning and corrected what was wrong in their lives receive. Count the votive offerings hanging on the holy icon. Look at the display over there. I do not know how many hundreds have been taken down from here, or how many hundreds have been stolen. There are thieves even among Christians. Every one of these offerings was earned through an answered petition. No one wants to hang anything there unless he has first received something. “First give me what I ask, and then I will give you something. My Most Holy Theotokos, do this for me and I will bring you that. Do that for me and I will give you my earrings. Do something else and I will give you my ring. Do this other thing and I will bring you a candle. If You do not grant it, You receive nothing.”
The Most Holy Theotokos has worked these wonders. From them, therefore, all of us who have spiritual or bodily needs can draw strength. We can ask, and she will give to us. The miracles that have taken place here, in this little chapel, in this upper room, leave the human nous—the spiritual intellect—astonished. Today the whole world is concerned with Malevi—not merely Kynouria, and not merely all of Greece. The whole globe, all five continents, is concerned with Malevi and with the myrrh of Malevi. Our correspondence with people throughout the world bears witness to this. If, then, we do not receive what we need today, there is some reason. Perhaps the child is ill because the father blasphemes and does not believe,
or because the mother lives a corrupt life. There is some reason why the feet suffer on account of the head. Let us examine these things and search for the cause. The Most Holy Theotokos is not an aspirin, simply giving us a tablet to stop the pain. No. If I have an illness or face some adversity, there is a reason. When you go to a doctor and say, “I have spots on my face,” he will look at them and say, “Tell me your medical history.” If he obtains an accurate history, he will prescribe the appropriate medicine. It is the same here. If each of us tells the Most Holy Theotokos our whole history now that we have come here, we will stop and say: “Yes, I am to blame. It is not the child, the wife, the husband, or the brother. I am to blame.” Put your sins in order, then, and come.
When a person confesses, repents, and acknowledges his fault, he frees the hands of Christ and the hands of the Theotokos. The Theotokos cannot carry many of our petitions to Heaven; she is offended because we persist in our sins. Christ takes us by the foot and says, “I want to save both your soul and your body.” Pay attention to this. Forgive me for speaking in this tone, but these things demand our attention. We have made the effort and the sacrifice, and we have faced the fear—for many came up here this morning with fear. Yes, we came in order to receive. I pray that those of you who have received will always remember it. Those who have not received must persevere; break down Christ’s door if you must. Christ is inside. Christ is not absent. “Knock, and it shall be opened to you.” As someone once said, “I am going to break down Christ’s door.”
Could He have gone away, forgotten to turn off the light, and left us knocking while He is not inside? Christ is certainly inside. If He does not open, He has His reason. Let us try to discover that reason and set matters right with Christ, so that through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos we may receive what we ask. I pray that we may all leave here smiling and glorifying God, through the intercessions of the holy women who live their ascesis here and patiently wait for us and care for us; through the intercessions of the holy father and all the saints; and especially of Saint Panteleimon the Wonderworker, whom our Church celebrates today. We have reached the end of this great season, which began at Pascha and ended today.
This season now hands us over to another season of preparation, beginning tomorrow, for the feast of the Holy Apostles. It included Pascha, Pentecost, the Ascension, and today’s feast of All Saints. One might call it the most comprehensive season of our Church, founded upon and prepared for by the events of the Triodion. Yet there is one thing that escapes us, and we are called to pay attention to it for the rest of our lives.
It is no accident that at the end of this season the Church appointed the feast of All Saints, gathering together all those from Adam until the consummation of the ages: the people of the Old Testament and the New Testament, and all who will be pleasing to God until the day of the Lord’s Second Coming. The chief purpose of Christ’s coming into the world, of the Holy Spirit’s coming into the world, and of the Holy Spirit’s abiding in the Church is nothing other than the sanctification of the human person.
The command is: “Be holy, as the Father is holy.” Woe to the person who comes into the world and fails to attend to this. We have no other purpose in this world except to attain holiness and receive this promise. Yet people imagine they came here simply to live. They toil, grow weary, and act as though they will remain permanently on earth. They labor to build a permanent home, secure themselves, and create safety so that they can enjoy the good things of the earth. But the human person did not come into this world to live here forever. We did not come here as permanent residents.
The human person is not a citizen of the earth. To think so is a great mistake. He is only a tenant, and whenever the master, lord, and owner wills, he serves the notice of eviction upon this tenant called man. If a person grasps this truth, he will live differently, in a way that helps him fulfill the purpose for which he came to earth. These are fundamental thoughts that should always occupy us. Of course, becoming holy is not easy, but neither is it impossible. I believe that our Christ never preached anything impossible. He asks people to live what He Himself lived,
and to follow what He Himself followed. He has not preached unattainable things, for that would make Him terribly unjust. He Himself fulfilled them first, and so did many others who are numbered among the saints. When we enter the church building, it constantly reminds us of our purpose. We take a candle from the candle stand and light it. What does this mean? It is a confession that one day we must become like the candle we light. At first we are spiritually dead, like the candles lying in that box, which resembles a coffin. We take our own self and fix it onto the candle stand, which represents Christ. Christ makes us a light, and we give light and warmth,
becoming a source of blessing to those around us. That is what we are saying when we place a candle there. Yet often it is untrue, because we are neither light nor a blessing to others. We remain passive. One day, however, we must leave the candle stand and rise to the chandelier. The chandelier represents the Church triumphant. That is our destination. Woe to the person who remains merely a candle and never becomes one of the chandelier’s lights. He must go up to the Pantocrator, the One who holds all things. The candle stand reminds us of our life here, while the chandelier reminds us of our journey and destination there. Therefore, whenever a person enters the church, he should ask himself: “My Christ, am I truly a light? Am I worthy to light this candle?”
“Does it correspond to anything real? Is it a reality, or am I simply mocking You and deceiving myself at the same time? If I am not yet a proper light and a blessing to those around me, help me to become one, because one day I too must be among the little lights of the Kingdom of Heaven.” Here we speak of a father, a mother, and children, together forming what is called the domestic church. The father should stand in the place of Christ, the mother in the place of the Theotokos, and the children in the place of the saints. This reflects what is in Heaven: there is the Father, there is the Most Holy Theotokos, and there are the saints. This is the heavenly Church.
There is a spiritual firmament just as there is a material firmament. There are the sun, the moon, and the stars; and there are Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the saints. Everything speaks and everything reminds us of this one matter, the ultimate matter of the sanctification of the human person, so that he may become a worthy member of the Kingdom of Heaven. All who have been pleasing to the Lord are called saints. Saints are those who are clean, those who are undefiled. In a little while the priest will come out and call us, saying, “The Holy Gifts for the holy.” The Holy Gifts are for the baptized, for those who are clean. Let us draw near with the fear of God and with love, to enter into communion with Christ, so that He may sanctify us here and prepare us for the Kingdom of Heaven. I would like to know, at least concerning us
who have been counted worthy to ascend this Golgotha, this upper room, this Pool of Siloam: in what spirit have we come here today? Why did we come? What is our purpose? Did we come to be sanctified? Did we come to become a little better? Did we come to examine ourselves and look into the mirror, the Theotokos, so that we might see ourselves? Why did we come? We came to hear the texts proclaiming that saints have existed from the foundation of the world. There were saints even before Christ, although they had not yet received the promise—that is, they had not yet received the prize, as we said. For, as Paul says, God had provided something better, “that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
He has appointed one great day and is waiting for us also, so that He may vindicate everyone—both those of the Old Testament and us. Thank you. Here is another thought: how did we come up here? This is something that should always concern every person throughout life: how he stands before God, and especially how he stands before holy shrines and places bearing divine imprints—whether he has the proper fear and reverence. For we too must become saints. As I have said, it is no accident that all these things happened so that you might become saints. God was crucified so that you might become a saint, O man. The Holy Spirit came so that you might become a saint, O man. All of them have labored for you, O man. We must appreciate this and pay attention to it. Where I am speaking now is what is called the Beautiful Gate. Why is it called Beautiful? Have you ever wondered?
Is it more beautiful than the other two, the north door and the west door? No. It is called the Beautiful Gate because of the role it fulfills. This gate was once closed, because this whole area was represented by the veil of Solomon’s Temple, symbolizing sin, which had placed a barrier between God and man. And when Christ came into the world and was crucified on Golgotha, the first miracle that occurred was that the veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom. What did this mean? Reconciliation had come; the way had been found; the door had been opened. And the door that was opened was this one, called the Beautiful Gate. Through here man will pass into the Kingdom of Heaven.
If someone tries to pass through another door, supposedly going to God in his own way, he will meet the Archangel there with a sword at his side, saying, “Not this way; go to the middle.” If he tries to pass through the other door, the other Archangel will again appear with sword in hand: “Not this way; go to the middle.” But man does not want to come to the middle. He does not want to come to the middle in order to pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. It is called Beautiful because beautiful souls pass through it into the Kingdom of Heaven. Here souls are adorned and made beautiful in the blood of the Lamb. Christ appears, beautifies souls, and makes them fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. One could call this the door of mercy, the door of metanoia, of repentance, because Christ stands here and saves people through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos. Someone once asked—
after hearing such a sermon—how wide the tear had been, how far that veil had opened when Christ was crucified on Golgotha. An illumined father immediately answered, “It opened a door here so great that even the greatest sinner in the world could pass through it.” This is an answer for everyone: no one has any excuse to remain outside. No matter how sinful a person may be, if only he is willing to take this seriously and understand that he must begin to set his life in order here, at the place where I am speaking, before the Beautiful Gate. Let the Most Holy Mother present her child to her own Child.
He is her child, though now grown, and may that great Son receive the person as His brother. That is the point, because through our own righteousness we cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ must clothe us. We are naked; we are descendants of Adam and Eve, who were naked and stripped of their garment. The Church personifies them so beautifully on the eve of their expulsion, the Sunday of Cheesefare, when Adam says in one hymn, “Wretched as I am, I have been stripped of the garment woven by God.” Then the new Adam, Christ, came and sacrificed Himself, and now He clothes mankind: “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Our devout parents had us baptized.
From childhood we were clothed in Christ. But unfortunately, when we grew older, we stripped ourselves of the grace Christ had given us, and many of us are naked again today, though we could have remained clothed and feared neither the reaper of death, as the saying goes, nor death itself, nor earthquakes, nor anything at all. This is because of what a person does while living here. When a person has died here to the world, he does not fear physical death. Blessed is the person who has died here and does not die when death comes. Whoever dies before he dies will not die when he dies. This is the reasoning; this is the principle. But we live for our flesh; we live for the world—
for the ego and for our money. We live for Satan, for fashion, for this and that—we live for everything else. Yet today Christ said, “Whoever wishes to come near Me, whoever longs for Me and desires My Kingdom, which I have prepared and offer freely, must take a cross upon his shoulder. If anyone wishes to come after Me.” Christ does not compel anyone. Christ is generous: He receives, cares for, and bears patiently even with those who blaspheme Him most. Indeed, many who cannot comprehend the goodness and longsuffering of God are scandalized. “Imagine that! I carry the Cross, yet I never see a day of rest, while others feast, do whatever they please, and destroy everything. Where is God? Where is justice?” Thank you.
They do not know that Christ disciplines those whom He loves and helps them become better and better. As for the others, because they will be condemned in eternity, in His goodness He says, “Let them at least enjoy this passing life.” Yes, people do this, and how much more does God. I remember a woman who had a drunken husband. Sometimes at three or four in the morning he would come home with his friend, a fellow drunkard with whom he had been drinking. Yet she never made a scene, never struck him, and never locked him out. She always saved for him something from the little she herself could eat—an egg, a little cheese, and a small glass of wine—and she looked after him. When he told this to the other man, who always returned home to—
a beating from his wife and terrible quarrels, that man could not imagine it. One night, as the story goes, they lost track of time, and it became too late for the friend to go home. “Why worry?” the husband told him. “Come with me; we’ll go to our house.” So he went up and, when he arrived drunk, knocked on the door. She had been waiting for him, though it was already three or four in the morning, and came downstairs. He said, “I brought my friend Apostolos with me.” “Oh, you brought your friend Mr. George? Wonderful, wonderful! Come upstairs, both of you.” She took them both upstairs and looked for something extra to serve them. Then she said, “My dear George, I welcome you gladly. My husband has spoken so highly of you.” Hearing words like these seemed like a fairy tale to him, and at last he said, “I don’t want anything, madam. I want you to tell me what you see in us—in your Niko and in me.
You know that every day we go out carousing and drinking while leaving you and the other wives hungry. How can you welcome us this way? Where did you find such courage? Where,” he asked, “did you find such love?” She replied, “Listen, my dear Mr. Niko and Mr. George. I married Niko out of love, but Niko has never given a thought to the life to come. I know there is another life, and I know that Hell awaits him. Because I love him, I try at least to make his life here as much like Paradise as possible, since another life awaits him.” The other man said, “From this moment I am giving up wine, and I will make your husband stop drinking too.” One person had shown such love for this passing life because she believed that the man she loved faced condemnation in eternity. Then does He who so loved the world that He came here and shed His blood not love souls?
We are the ones who do not want it; we persist in refusing, despite the mercy God shows us. My beloved, “let him take up his cross.” Anyone who does not bear a cross cannot be called a Christian, and anyone who does not follow Christ cannot be called a Christian. Do you see how beautifully He put it? “Come after Me,” He says. It is to man’s benefit to follow behind. Where can a person go if he sets out ahead on his own? What can he invent? What can he accomplish? Where can he walk? Only toward his own destruction. Put Christ in front and remain behind Him, and you will be safe. You do this on the trolley when they tell you, “Exit through the front.” How can I make my way to the front with luggage in my hands? So you ask the person ahead of you, “Are you moving forward, sir? Are you getting off?” “Yes.” Then you remain at ease, because the other person will push ahead and open a path for you. That person is Christ. But we either want to go ahead of Christ—
or walk beside Christ and discuss matters with Him. He tells us, “No, you will come behind Me. I do not even want a debate with you. What is there for us to discuss? What can you advise Me? What can you tell Me? What do you know? What have you created? Where were you before you came into being, and where will you go afterward? I know all these things; I created you. If you wish, listen and follow My way.” My beloved, do not let this world, the flesh, or an excessive attachment to family take hold of us. When there is no love for Christ, love for one’s family becomes distorted. Christ must discern, measure, and regulate everything, always through the lens of eternity and the life to come. The world is passing away. Beware of the world. Christ went so far as to say, “Even if your father, your mother—
your wife, your husband, your child, or your brother becomes the cause of your losing eternity, abandon them.” That is harsh, is it not? Harsh indeed! But if they cause you to lose eternity and lose Christ, then you must leave them. Christ came to bring a sword upon the earth; He did not come to bring peace upon the earth, but to gather those who are His. Such bloodshed and such divisions exist within many families. One person believes, while the other five do not. Where can that one stand? Where can he find fasting food? Where can he pray? Where can he burn incense? It causes an uprising. Or five believe and one does not; he blasphemes and abuses them. He calls you a Jesuit, backward, and all manner of things. This struggle will take place in this world, because “the world is passing away, and so is its desire.” One day we shall depart at an unexpected hour; we do not know when.
Yet God loves us and has prepared a place for each of us. It is like the churches here, where many people have their own seats in the choir stalls, which they have paid for and marked with their names. There Christ has a place for everyone. All Saints should not be a limited number. The whole world should consist of saints, because our purpose is to become saints. “Become saints, as My Father is holy.” “But can I become one?” Yes, through Christ you can, if only you are willing. To be a saint means to be pure. To be a saint means to be undefiled. As long as there is metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession, fear nothing. I am not telling you to fall. But if you have fallen—someone pushed you, you slipped, someone set a trap for you, or you failed to guard yourself and see it in time—then get up. “To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic.” It is shameful for a person—
to come to Christ and say, “I am holding on to my sins.” Then you insult Christ; then you believe the devil, who drives you to despair. He tells you that your sins are too many for Christ to take away, that their weight is so great Christ cannot bear them. That is false. Even if I bore upon my back every sin, from Cain the fratricide to the very last sinner at the end of the ages, one “I have sinned” and one tear would be enough to set everything right. Never despair. The saints whose feast we celebrate today were not born saints from their mothers’ wombs. They struggled; they too had a spiritual father, and they fell many times in their lives. Some even went so far as to deny Christ. They became Muslims or whatever else. But afterward, with their own blood, they washed away—
the sin they had committed, became saints, departed from the candle stand, and were added to the chandelier among All Saints. It is said that this feast was established chiefly through Saint Leo the Wise. He had a wife named Empress Theophano, who outwardly was an empress but inwardly lived as a Christian nun. Her attendants would go and prepare her bed at night, but in the morning they found it still made: the empress had slept on the floor. This is an answer to those women and men who say Christianity is for failures. Is Christ not for those who are prosperous, who can go out dancing, go to the discotheque, and take part in society? Then for whom is He? He is for them too—for Christ’s people, for the faithful. When the emperor’s wife reposed, the emperor, knowing the holiness of her life, quickly built a church for her in Constantinople, intending to dedicate it in her name and proclaim her a saint himself, before the Church had spoken.
Then Joachim intervened—I think that was his name; I do not know who the third one was, but in any case he was the Patriarch—and said to him, “Emperor, do not be hasty. If the empress is a saint, the Church will not wrong her.” The emperor accepted this and gave the church over, asking that it be dedicated to All Saints. His reasoning was—
“May Theophano also be numbered as a saint among the saints.” If my dear wife is a saint, let her be included among All Saints. Thus, according to the Church, from that time this feast was in a sense formally established. Together with you, my beloved, I pray to Christ, through the intercessions of His Most Holy Mother, here where we stand today before this holy, myrrh-streaming icon, that we may receive her grace and the strength of all these saints, who have boldness before God and uphold heaven. May we use this time of our sojourn here for metanoia, repentance, and return to God. Sin continues to place a barrier between us and God, making even our gifts and everything else of no avail. Sin must be removed from the midst so that Christ may accept our candle, our offering, our kollyva, and our coin. But sin does not depart!
God’s hands remain bound, and He can offer us nothing. So I would like another Pentecost to take place here today in all of us. And I offer one more prayer: may all who pass through this place, even afterward, receive the grace of the Queen, the Most Holy Theotokos; may they understand their purpose here, prepare for the life there, and be numbered among All Saints. This is my heartfelt prayer.
And I shall finish. Another great obligation for us Orthodox today is to pray here beside the Most Holy Theotokos concerning what is being discussed and contrived—perhaps even against our Orthodoxy—down there on Patmos and Rhodes. I do not know whether you are aware of it. There are many other things we do know.
We know what is happening abroad, the wars being fought, and so forth. But unfortunately, most of us do not know what is happening in the Church. And woe to us if Orthodoxy, the Orthodox Church, and the cassock are lost. The fate of Orthodoxy is at stake. A dialogue is taking place between the Orthodox and the Catholics, and because of our sins Christ may permit us to undergo a trial. What will become of us then? Can we endure martyrdom? Will we remain steadfast? Therefore, let us beseech Him here today, beside the Most Holy Theotokos, to illumine these people so that what is right may be done and both sides may be saved. We bear no malice and do not wish the Catholics to be lost, though their doctrine is not sound. But we do insist on remaining firm in our own place and that they too should return, so that both may stand rightly, because Christ died for the whole world.
The Cross reaches out in four directions. This is what the name Adam signifies: the four points of the compass, whose initials in Greek spell ADAM—East, West, North, and South. Christ was crucified for the whole world. And since He was crucified for the whole world, the whole world must be saved. A great part of this will depend on us Orthodox Christians, who have been counted worthy to possess the truth: that they too may be illumined, return to the truth, and that we may all be numbered among All Saints, to the glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Σου φαίνεται, λοιπόν, παράξενο αν σε ειρωνεύονται που δεν έδωσες την παρθενία σου ακόμη; Αν σε ειρωνεύονται που είσαι πιστός και κάνεις παιδιά; Αν σε ειρωνεύονται που μένεις τίμιος στη σύζυγό σου ή εσύ μένεις τίμια στον σύζυγό σου;
Έχει τάξει μια μέρα μεγάλη και περιμένει και μας, ώστε να δικαιώσει όλους, κι αυτούς της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης και εμάς. Ευχαριστώ. Άλλη σκέψη εδώ: πώς ανεβήκαμε; Αυτό είναι ένα θέμα που πρέπει να απασχολεί κάθε άνθρωπο πάντοτε στη ζωή του, πώς βρίσκεται ενώπιον του Θεού και πώς βρίσκεται, μάλιστα, όταν βρίσκεται ενώπιον προσκυνημάτων, ενώπιον μερών που υπάρχουν αποτυπώματα θεϊκά, αν υπάρχει ο φόβος ο ανάλογος και ο σεβασμός. Διότι πρέπει και εμείς να γίνουμε Άγιοι. Δεν είναι, λέγω, τυχαίο γεγονός, λοιπόν, ότι όλα αυτά έγιναν για να γίνετε εσείς Άγιοι. Εσταυρώθη ο Θεός για να γίνεις Άγιος, άνθρωπε. Ήρθε το Πνεύμα το Άγιον για να γίνεις Άγιος, άνθρωπε. Όλοι αυτοί εργάστηκαν για σένα, άνθρωπε. Αυτό πρέπει λοιπόν εμείς να το εκτιμούμε και να το προσέχουμε. Εδώ που μιλώ τώρα είναι η λεγόμενη Ωραία Πύλη. Γιατί λέγεται Ωραία; Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ;
Βλέπεις; Κάθε μέρα ξέρω ότι εμείς τα γλεντάμε έξω, τα πίνουμε και σας αφήνουμε νηστικές, εσένα κλπ. Πώς μας δέχεσαι; Πού το βρήκες αυτό το κουράγιο; Πού τη βρήκες», λέει, «αυτή την αγάπη;» «Άκουσε», λέει, «κύριε Νίκο μου, κύριε Γιώργο μου, άκουσε. Τον Νίκο», λέει, «τον έχω πάρει από αγάπη και ο Νίκος ουδέποτε σκέφτηκε την άλλη ζωή. Εγώ ξέρω ότι υπάρχει κι άλλη ζωή και ξέρω ότι τον περιμένει η κόλαση και, διότι τον αγαπώ, φροντίζω τουλάχιστον να του κάνω τη ζωή του εδώ παραδεισένια, ει δυνατόν, διότι τον περιμένει άλλη ζωή». «Από εδώ το κόβω από σήμερα το κρασί», λέει ο άλλος, «και θα εκβιάσω και τον δικό σου να μην ξαναπιούνε», γιατί ένας άνθρωπος έδειξε μια τέτοια αγάπη για την προσωρινότητα, με τη σκέψη ότι κολάζεται ο αγαπημένος της στην αιωνιότητα. Αυτός που τόσο ηγάπησε τον κόσμο και ήρθε εδώ και έχυσε το αίμα του, δεν αγαπάει τις ψυχές;
