Summary

Beginning with the Prayer of Saint Ephrem, the lecture identifies chastity as purity of body and mind, a neglected but essential Christian virtue. The Orthodox Church treats second and third marriages as penitential concessions rather than the fullness of the first marriage blessing. Chastity must be cultivated before and within marriage through prayer, fasting, church life, sound teaching, and active resistance to temptation.

This evening’s subject will continue what we discussed the day before yesterday and in the talk before that. As you know, we have been speaking about this short prayer that has been our theme these days. I will repeat it: “O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of idleness, meddling, lust for power, and idle talk. But grant to me, Your servant, the spirit of chastity, humility, patient endurance, and love. Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults.”

“And not to condemn my brother, for blessed are You unto ages of ages.” Those of you who remember me know that we have given three talks. The first concerned the spirit of idleness. The second, as I see from my notes, concerned the spirit of meddling and lust for power.

The third concerned the spirit of idle talk and chastity. And if those of you who remember me will recall, we stopped while discussing chastity because there was not enough time. Unfortunately, as we said in the previous talk, chastity is lacking in most people.

There is no chastity. Chastity is purity above all: Joseph the chaste, Joseph the pure. Today it is regarded, more than anything else, as something belonging to the past. And we do not merely fail to find chaste young men and women; we also fail to find chastity among married people and those of advanced age. We do not find chaste people. Yet this is something to which God pays very close attention. You will remember that I read to you from the Gospel Christ’s teaching on chastity, when He was questioned about it.

Some of the scribes and Pharisees asked Him whether a man could put away his wife for any reason at all—that is, if he did not like her, whether he could leave her and take another. And the Lord told them that this cannot be done, because you were not given a right over many women, but over one. “From the beginning,” He says, “He made them male and female,” and the two became one flesh. Therefore, you have no right to take another. Nor do you have the right to divorce your wife. Indeed, He gives the reason: “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

“They are no longer two”—so how can you leave her?—“but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate.” Except, of course, on account of sexual immorality, as we know. For in an Orthodox marriage—and do not listen now to talk about civil or purely secular marriages, but consider the marriage solemnized by the Church and blessed by God through the clergy—at that moment the two persons are spiritually joined into one. The service says, “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned unto the handmaid of God, so-and-so.” It does not say, “I crown the servant and the handmaid.” He is crowned in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

At that moment a spiritual joining takes place. Just as Eve once came from Adam and did not exist independently of him, but was a part of the whole human being, Adam, so too in Holy Matrimony the woman is mystically restored to union with the man. You have left your father and mother. Before, you were separate; now you and your wife are one, or you and your husband are one, since God has blessed you. When they heard how close the bond between husband and wife is, they were scandalized and remembered something Moses had done.

He had given her what we today call a certificate of divorce. That was what they called it then: a document allowing the woman to leave and marry elsewhere without being considered an adulteress. So they said to Him, “Why, then, did Moses command that a certificate of divorce be given?”

“And that she be put away”—that is, give her a document saying that you set her free. The Savior answered: “Because of your hardness of heart, Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it was not so.” For you would have killed your wife in order to take another. To keep you from committing murder, he at least allowed you to bear only part of the guilt of sin. That is what he did.

He did not bless you and say, “Go ahead, choose someone else and take another wife.” No. He did this to restrain you, so that you would not kill her in order to take another. The result is this: “But I say to you,” the Lord continues, “that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery”—he is regarded as an adulterer. And whoever marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. If he takes another woman who has been put away by someone else, he too, the Lord says, is an adulterer. His disciples said to Him, “If this is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” In other words, if things are like this—if we cannot leave our wife when she does not suit us or we no longer like her—then it is better not to marry. The Lord answered them: “Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given.”

Can you remain unmarried, without a wife? Then remain so. Do you have the gift of continence? Then remain so. But if you become a fornicator, I will not justify you. Either you will take a wife, or you, as a woman, will take a husband and have your safe harbor, or else you will not marry. You will remain a virgin, whole and honorable. But not everyone possesses this gift, this virtue, this talent. “Not everyone can accept this saying”; not everyone, He says, can remain in that state. He then continues with the explanation I touched on the day before yesterday, which I repeat simply to reconnect our discussion: “For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother’s womb.” There are people, He says, who were born incapable.

They were incapable of marriage from their mother’s womb. “And there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men,” like those who serve in harems. They are castrated so that they will not molest the women, whom the sultans want for themselves alone. “And there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.” They chose continence for what we might call higher, spiritual pursuits, for the Kingdom of Heaven. “He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.” Can you do it? If you can remain continent, do not marry; do not put a noose around your neck. Then you will have no need either to leave your wife or to be condemned to Hell. But this is not for everyone. That is why He says, “He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.” Can everyone remain virginal and continent? No, they cannot. Therefore, they must enter into Holy Matrimony.

As I said the day before yesterday, people think they can arrange their lives as they please. God made, they say, one woman for man. Or rather, He did not simply make woman for man. He made one woman for one man, and one man for one woman. God has blessed one marriage. Of course, the Church, by condescension, also blesses a second marriage and often even a third. I do not know whether you have read about this or whether it has happened to you—whether you have entered a second or third marriage, or whatever number it may be. I do not know everyone’s marital record; I am simply discussing the matter as the occasion arises. If you wish, take the Euchologion and see what it says about a second marriage.

The priest reads prayers of forgiveness and asks for God’s mercy because the person is young and cannot bear the burden of the flesh. He asks God mercifully to consent to that person’s entering a second marriage. It is a sin; it is not the fullness of a blessing, but an act of economia, a pastoral concession. It is not akriveia, the strict application of the rule. That is precisely why the service includes two prayers of forgiveness. If someone enters a third marriage, the Church places him under a canon of penance. It does not permit him to receive Holy Communion except during the great fasts: the Nativity Fast, Great Lent, and the Dormition Fast. And it calls his wife a concubine.

It calls such a marriage restrained fornication. The Church does not approve of this. Saint Basil the Great, who speaks on these matters, says that the man does not commit fornication with many women, but with one. God gave one woman to one man. After that, a person ought to remain an honorable widower or an honorable widow. My dear sir, there is no other way to understand it. Apart from Holy Matrimony, which is the natural harbor, there is virginity, which is above nature and is for whoever can bear it. Can you not bear it? Then here is Holy Matrimony. Can you not remain continent, my good woman? Take a husband. Can you not remain continent, young man? Take a wife. I am not telling you that you must remain unmarried. This is why God established Holy Matrimony, so that you may also raise a family, and so forth.

If there are one, two, five, ten, or a hundred people—however many—who are capable of higher spiritual pursuits, let them journey onward and soar higher. But these are the two paths. We, however, invented fornication as well. Fornication does not aim at bearing children, but only at pleasure. Adultery does not aim at bearing children, but only at pleasure. Masturbation does not aim at bearing children. These are inventions of Satan. They are not natural. Holy Matrimony is according to nature; virginity is above nature. The rest are contrary to nature: adultery, fornication, masturbation, and the Annunciation—and these are condemned. They are punished; the other two are not punished. Indeed, they are rewarded. But these other things have no place in God’s design. Man invented them.

Man invented them in partnership with the devil, so that his sexual drive would be squandered uselessly, bearing no fruit and bringing no human beings into existence—something the devil does not want. And you see, even today, what he does not legislate and what he does not invent in order to circumvent the word of God. We want to take the pleasure without doing the work and without bearing children. And you know how many methods—even pills and countless other things—the satanic cleverness of man has invented today to avoid having children. This is because you do not trust in God’s providence: that God knows what each person is able to bear. I remember a friend of mine whom I met here at the Northern Epirus Hospital.

He was discharged and recovered, and then married in a provincial town nearby. He was a religious man. When he and his wife had their first child, she told him, “I hope you do not imagine that I will have a second. There is no reason for me to have one child in my womb and another in my arms.” He replied, “Then you can gather your things now, take your child, and go to your mother and father.” For they were the ones advising her—especially her mother, who said, “We were fools: we had children and suffered. You should enjoy your lives.” Do you know how many such women there are, and how many will be found with the yoke hanging around their necks because they made it difficult for their daughters to bear children or even sent many of them to kill their children afterward? They conceived them and aborted them.

In any case, he waited for her and began speaking to her about these matters. “Do you know,” he asked, “what God means? Perhaps your parents never told you. Although I came from Albania as a captive when I was a small child, I know what God means. God will not give you more children than your strength allows. He knows better than you do. God is not a sadist.”

“Whether it is two, five, ten, a hundred, and so forth.” In the end he persuaded her, and she said, “Let us try, then, and see what this God of yours is like.”

What her husband’s God did was this: the child reached two and a half years of age, and the woman had still not conceived again. “You see,” he said, “you did not conceive, and so you would have spent these two and a half years sinning for nothing. It is in God’s hands; He does not give you a child simply when you yourself decide.”

After two and a half years she conceived and gave birth, and now they have six children. They now have six children, and she gives glory to God; at the same time, their eyes were opened. No Christian mother and no Christian father rejects this great privilege, this great right: to cooperate with God.

People think that husbands and wives make children by themselves. “I will come together with my husband, I will come together with my wife, and I will have a child.” Really? How many husbands and wives come together and have no children? They may struggle desperately, yet still have none. How many? Many—thousands have no children. Why not? And why does one person have one child and then another five years later, while someone else has another after a different interval of five years? Such extraordinary things happen that you tear your hair out. Who is it, then, who brings a child into being?

How many times has a woman doctor said, “You will die with this birth,” or, “You will die with the next,” yet the woman has borne ten children and has not died in any of those births? We have no faith. This is unbelief. Nor do we regard it as an honor to bring human beings into existence. Instead, people invest in cars. The money that would have been spent on children becomes cars, luxury goods, televisions—the things we now put in our homes—parquet floors and every kind of devilish contraption; I do not know what else it becomes. But it does not become children. They speak of poverty? Lies. There are billions in wealth. Is there no room for people to live? Lies. Greece has become desolate, even with the eight or nine million people we are.

Greece could hold thirty-nine million, yet it is desolate. Everything has been left uncultivated; everything has been abandoned. And Australia—who knows how many millions it could sustain? There are untouched lands that have never been cultivated, immense expanses in Canada, America, and elsewhere—vast and empty. These are deceptive claims. You should know that certain organizations and scientists spread these ideas among humanity so that humanity will not multiply. Yet they do not apply such ideas consistently within their own communities. I have photographs of young couples carrying five, six, or seven children, one following behind another. Do you understand? But we are faithless, and worse than the faithless.

We do not fear God. Have you heard of a woman dying in childbirth? And if one did die, she became a martyr. All the others gave birth, sometimes in extraordinary circumstances when the doctors had given them no hope and could not help them, and yet they still gave birth. Unfortunately, today all this has been replaced by something else. There is scarcely a roof tile you can lift without finding fornication, adultery, or every other sin beneath it. The blessing of Holy Matrimony is being distorted. Even before some people are crowned in marriage and hear the Church’s prayers—that they may have children and children’s children, and that their children may be like olive shoots around their table—they have already settled these matters beforehand. “Let the priest say what he likes; let God say what He likes. We have made our own arrangements.”

Others make plans like this: “You know, we will educate the child in this way, buy a piano, provide this and that, and teach the child a foreign language.” This happened to a couple I knew here in Patissia. That was exactly what they had done. Even while they were engaged, they bought everything, including a baby carriage, and placed it behind the door. It is still there. She never became pregnant and never conceived at all. They married and now struggle desperately, but the carriage remains where it was. Why? Because they did not ask God. Those who did ask God saw miracles in their lives, here in this world. So you must know—or rather, let me remind you, since some may never have heard it—that God established Holy Matrimony and virginity. Everything else you hear of, in whatever form you may know it, belongs to the devil. In one of his prayers, Saint Ephrem says every evening, “I, the inventor of every kind of lust.”

People devise ways to enjoy the flesh in all sorts of forms. But what are they? Carob pods—that is what we are speaking about. All pleasures are carob pods, as our Christ showed us in the parable of the Prodigal Son: at the very moment you taste and enjoy them, you immediately spit them out afterward. Such is every pleasure. Yet we do not reflect on these matters and take our proper stand, remembering that one day He will bring us to judgment. People say, “He is young,” or, “She is young.” Very well, then let them enter Holy Matrimony. I told you the other day that Saint Ignatius says a boy should marry from the age of fourteen, so that he does not go to a brothel.

A girl, from the age at which the Most Holy Theotokos was ready, is prepared at fourteen for Holy Matrimony and childbearing. From the day her monthly cycle begins, this means she is physically ready for Holy Matrimony and for bearing children. Instead, all her youth is poured into the ravines of the devil, and then she reaches thirty-nine and expects to give birth. Which of these older unmarried women has given birth naturally? None. If caesarean sections had not been invented, they would not be able to deliver even a kitten, much less a child. A girl is made for this: either marry young or become a nun while young. Her body is supple and flexible, able to carry and bear a child. She has the strength to stay awake beside the child, the strength to nurse it—she has strength for everything, whether caring for one child, two, or five.

In Canada, I stayed in a home where the mother had six young children and was carrying the seventh, whom she bore in October. You should have seen that woman: she was like a carnation, like a rose. She could not have been more than twenty-nine years old, and she had seven children, yet she was like a rose, because a woman who gives birth is herself born anew.

We had no children. After seventeen years of childlessness, Saint Nektarios of Aegina miraculously gave us a child, whom we named Nektarios. And his mother—what ailments did she not have? Nervous disorders, stomach trouble, gallbladder trouble—what did she not suffer from? I remained beside her day and night with injections and every kind of treatment. But as soon as she gave birth to Nektarios, the gastritis vanished, the nervous disorders vanished; childbirth took them all away. A single birth did that.

If she had borne a second and a third child, she would have become eighteen years old again. But unfortunately, why have the psychiatric hospitals filled up? This is why they have filled up.

People have lost their sleep. This is why sleep has been lost. Whoever goes against nature is punished by nature; nature takes its revenge upon him. Let people say what they like. If doctors were willing, I believe, to tell us exactly how things truly stand, we would be terrified and would have prevented many things. Unfortunately, however, they do not tell us the truth, and consequently we know very little about this matter.

Only recently they discovered that a baby should drink its mother’s milk. They have discovered it now, at last, because it benefits both the child and the mother herself. And today we see mothers breastfeeding their children. In the past, in order not to lose their beauty, they hurried to stop their milk as soon as possible and fed the child these artificial products, these spoiled and filthy substances they contain. Nothing can equal a mother’s milk.

Where is that milk made? As soon as the mother conceives, her breasts immediately begin preparing milk for the precious child who is to come—milk suited to that particular child, suited to the child’s stomach, suited in every way. Of course, science also tries to produce substitute nourishment that can help the child. When a mother truly needs such help, I understand that. But otherwise it is cooperation with the devil, and that is precisely why we see these results.

Still, to give the other side its due, it is difficult for a person to preserve his or her purity. If someone has not received Christian principles at home, if fasting, prayer, and life in the Church have not become his own possession, it is difficult. A young man will either be swept along by others so that he may be considered a real man, or a young woman so that she may be considered modern. Today, as you know, a girl who does not have a boyfriend, or who preserves her virginity, is regarded as backward. The same applies to young men. But if they have been properly enlightened, they will be able to understand these theories and teachings, assign them their proper place within their nous—the spiritual intellect—and resist them.

They will, of course, face ridicule from others. They may be pushed aside, and who knows what names people will call them. But if they look more deeply into the matter and consider who it is that gives this commandment of chastity, they will struggle and they will overcome. Satan wants chastity not to exist. He hates virginity—how can I put it? And do you know why he hates it most of all? Because a Virgin crushed his head.

Satan is not as hostile toward Christ as he is toward the Most Holy Theotokos. Approach people who are heretics. Take a Protestant woman: precisely because she is a woman, as the Most Holy Theotokos is a woman, she ought to speak with some respect, yet she speaks about the Most Holy Theotokos in the most cynical manner. This is because Satan, who was defeated by the Most Holy Theotokos, influences such hostility within her. The devil did not expect a Virgin to give birth to the One who would crush his head. Christ was glorified through her, and even today the devil does not want, if he can prevent it, to hear anything at all about virginity, whether in men or in women. This is why we have reached such a wretched state. Because we are careless, unread, and uncatechized, we suffer what we suffer. So I say that...

If we had been catechized on these matters and understood them properly, we would take care, first of all, to enter Holy Matrimony honorable and morally pure, so that we might be worthy of the crowns. For when someone who has lived dishonorably—that is what I mean by being without honor—comes to Holy Matrimony and the Church says, “Crown them with glory and honor,” what honor is there? Do you know why crowns are given in the Church? They are given because of the struggle the newlyweds have made. They come into the Church and are crowned for their struggle to preserve their virginity. But those who have cast aside that struggle, trampled it underfoot, and treated it with indifference are not worthy of the crown. I also want you to know that in the past neither the bride nor the sponsor brought the crowns beforehand.

Were crowns sold in the marketplace? The Church kept the crowns. If you go to the mountain villages of Evrytania and elsewhere, you will find crowns in the churches made of iron or woven vine branches. It is the Church that crowns the couple, not the sponsor; the crowns belong to the Church. “Come, my children, you who struggled and preserved your virginity and chastity. Come here, my daughter, you who kept yourself for your husband. And come here, young man, you who kept yourself for your wife.” Then the Church crowns them: “Crown them with glory and honor.” Which of us received these crowns worthily? Tell me. And if someone tramples upon this purity afterward—let alone having trampled upon it beforehand...

Today adultery is considered fashionable. It is simply taken for granted. “Who is your latest flirtation?” I once heard two ladies who were buying ties, apparently for their boyfriends. And one said, “Who is your latest flirtation?”

“Oh, I am still with the one I had,” one said. “I have moved on,” the other told her. Do you understand? And no doubt she was married and had hung her wedding crowns high up in her home. What does God see, and what awaits this humanity—especially Orthodox Christians? Others are to be pitied; they know nothing of these things. They were not edified, or no one taught them. God will find mitigating circumstances for them. But what are we doing, we who have come to know? Allow me to share a few thoughts on this matter of chastity. How should a person think? A person must be chaste until entering marriage, and chaste afterward, within marriage as well.

Once the begetting of children has taken place, relations should cease. You know, when a female animal conceives, it has no relations with the male, whereas man does. Once, a priest had eleven children, and the villagers went and complained about him to the bishop. They said:

“Look how many children he has! What kind of Liturgy does he serve? What does he do at home? That is all he ever does.” The bishop, who had never had a wife or children and did not know what family life was like, summoned him and said, “My dear elder, you are scandalizing the village.” “Why am I scandalizing it, Your Eminence?” “You have so many children,” he said, “and they regard this as something base, something unworthy of a spiritual man.”

“Your Eminence,” he said, “I married and heard that we ought to have children. This is the purpose of marriage: the begetting of children. ‘Be fruitful and multiply.’ I have been married for eleven years. I have come together with my wife eleven times, and I have eleven children.” The bishop said, “Get up and go with God’s blessing. Leave here.” He came together with his wife once a year; she conceived, and they had no further relations, and so he had eleven children. Do you understand? We learn neither from the animals, nor from nature, nor from anything else. And not only that: we grow old and wait for pleasure to abandon us, instead of abandoning it ourselves. There is no struggle at all.

Resisting only when pleasure has already abandoned you has no value. It is not considered a virtue. Many of us who are elderly may now be continent and may sleep in separate beds, but we receive no reward from God for that. In God’s eyes, it is worth nothing. I wanted you when winter was raging, when the waves of the flesh were furious—then I wanted you to exercise continence for My sake. Now, even if you practice continence, you could not sin even if you wanted to. Sin abandoned you; you did not abandon sin. What I am telling you is not my own. I too read it in the writings of the Saints, whose minds were purified and refined...

Their minds were not rusted like ours, as we undress another man or woman with our eyes. No! They had a pure mind.

Saint Isidore of Pelusium, a great figure of the Church, says:

“At the very height of winter, the man who saves his storm-tossed ship and bridles nature is worthy of countless proclamations of praise, blessings, and crowns.” Let us all take this to heart. He says that when a man is at the height of winter, as I told you—when the waves of the flesh and desire beat against him and toss him about—yet saves his storm-tossed ship and keeps it honorable, bridling nature and striving in countless ways to restrain it so that Satan does not shatter him, then that man “is worthy of blessings and crowns.” We should call blessed the person who struggles to preserve his chastity and integrity, and crown him, for he is worthy.

“For chastity in old age”—the chastity and continence of the elderly—“is not continence, but the inability to indulge in vice.” You can no longer do it; you are weak, whether woman or man, and that is precisely why you now behave with continence. But this, he says, is merely the inability to indulge in vice; it is not a virtue in God’s eyes. Nilus the Ascetic likewise says, “Virtue in old age cannot be called virtue, but the inability to commit wickedness.” It does not count in God’s record. Shall I tell you what someone else says? Democritus—though I do not usually quote such men, even if they too said many wise things, for I always quote the Saints of the Church—makes an important statement...

It applies to us. Listen to what he says: “A father’s chastity is the greatest example for his children.” “A father’s chastity is the greatest example for his children.” Do you want to teach your child? Then you must first live the life you are teaching your child to live. “If I see you smoking, I will cut off your hand.” “Then cut off both of my hands, Father, because you smoke.” Do you understand? How can you speak to your child about chastity, honor, morality, continence, and the rest, when you yourself have no self-control and lead an unbridled life? Today you impose your will on me, do you? You lock me out. Fine, I will pretend not to notice. But when I grow up, I will lock you out.

If the things you tell me and teach me were good, you would have done them first yourself. That is what this saying means. Many of us demand chastity, integrity, honor, morality, and the like from our children, but we do not practice these things ourselves. And you know, children watch much more than they listen. They do not listen to what we tell them; words do not reach them. The child peers through the keyhole to see: do you yourself do what you tell me to do? And he looks for some fault in you. He will find one fault and use it to reject the other nine hundred and ninety-nine things you say. We bear responsibility for this. A gambler does not want a gambler for a son-in-law. Why not? If gambling is good and you keep doing it, why do you not want such a son-in-law? A drunkard does not want a drunkard for a son-in-law. You taught him to be a drunkard; why would you then accept him?

Is drunkenness good? Then why do you continue getting drunk? And there are countless other examples. Now listen to something else that may seem strange, so that you can see how far chastity and virginity extend. “A virgin is not one who has merely guarded the body from intercourse with someone of the opposite sex”—one who has not had relations with a man, if she is a woman, or with a woman, if he is a man. No, he says, that alone does not make someone a virgin. “Rather, it is one who feels modesty before oneself when alone”—one who is ashamed even to see oneself naked. That is the person. Do you know what Saint Basil the Great said? “I have not known a woman, and yet I am not a virgin.” He did not believe himself to be wholly pure and undefiled.

He meant inwardly, in the soul, because fornication and adultery are not only sins of the flesh; they are also spiritual sins. Whoever looks at a woman with lust, Christ says, has committed adultery with her in his heart. Who, then, is free from defilement in this matter, according to the measure Christ gives us? The measure is not what the world, sociologists, or unbelieving doctors say. It is what Christ says, because He will judge us. The measuring rule is His, and the scales are His; they are not mine or yours. So he says here that a virgin is not merely someone who has had no relations with the opposite sex—a woman with a man, or a man with a woman—but someone who is ashamed even to see oneself naked. Of course, someone might say that this sounds rather paradoxical. Is it possible not to see yourself?

It is possible, though it is not easy. Some years ago, something happened to me at the Church of the Three Hierarchs. Let me tell you this small detail. I was speaking—I do not remember exactly what about, but it was something similar—and I had quoted this saying. Of course, some may not have noticed it, while others did and discussed it.

That evening, I had some reason to leave quickly. Perhaps I had to catch public transport, or perhaps someone at home was ill; I do not remember. As soon as I came down from the lectern, people approached and waited for me. I grabbed my bag, saying, “Excuse me, please, excuse me,” and hurried downstairs. As I was descending the great staircase, two young ladies were walking ahead of me, discussing this very subject. One said to the other, “Did you hear what he said tonight?”

“Even if he says that you should not see yourself, when you are changing your clothes, you can avoid looking at yourself.”

By God’s providence, I happened to be right behind them and was just about to ask them to step aside. When I heard them, I said, “Then turn off the light when you change.” They nearly fainted. How could they have imagined that I was standing directly behind them?

Thank you. I did not turn around to look at them, lest they think anything improper. I only told them, “Turn off the light when you change, and you will not see yourself.” But where can such things be found today? You see a mother walking around the house in front of children who are fifteen, sixteen, or eighteen years old, dressed as though she were in a cabaret. Where is modesty? Where is reverence? Brothers and sisters, have you ever read the Life of Saint Macrina—Saint Macrina, the sister of Saint Basil the Great?

Saint Macrina once developed a large growth beneath her breast, apparently cancer, and she was burning with fever. This only came to light when her brother Gregory was preparing her body for burial. He was there at her death with the assistant abbess, and beneath her breast he saw a cross standing out in relief, like the raised designs people make—even figures such as mermaids and the like. It was a raised mark. Then the story I am about to tell was revealed. He asked, “What is this?” She replied, “I will tell you later, Your Eminence.” And she related the following. When this young woman fell ill with a fever—I do not know how high—she refused to go to a doctor. She did not want to go because she would have had to expose her body.

Her mother saw that her child was wasting away day by day and was going to die; she had become nothing but skin and bones. So she fell at her daughter’s feet and said, “My child, did God not create doctors? Did He not create medicines? Since you are ill, is it not blasphemous to refuse to see a doctor? How will you answer to God? This is tantamount to suicide.” Saint Macrina understood all of this, but she still would not go to the doctor. Her mother pressed her so insistently one evening that she remained there and said, “I will stay here, and in the morning we shall go to the doctor.” Macrina said to her mother, “Go and sleep, and I promise that in the morning we shall go to the doctor.” But the venerable Macrina did not go to sleep. She went instead to a little cell where there was a chapel of the Most Holy Theotokos, with an earthen floor. There she knelt and prayed all night, weeping.

Her knees and her tears left their impressions in the mud there inside the chapel. At daybreak she rose and returned to her cell, because she knew that her mother would rise early and did not want her to find her in that condition. She had been asking Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos to help her so that she would not have to go to the doctor. She did not want to expose her body. And what was the result?

A little later her mother awoke—how could she possibly sleep?—and went to the cell. And what did she see? Her daughter had already been in a terrible state when she left her the night before. But after that night of hardship, tears, struggle, and fever, she looked like a corpse. “Get up, my child, and let me help you. Get up—we are losing precious time.” “Mother, I will not go.” “But did you not promise me last night?” “Mother, you will make me well.” “My child, how can I make you well? God has not given me such powers. How could I heal you?” “If you make the sign of the Cross over this with your prayer, I believe I will be healed at once.” “But, my child...” Her mother, as we can see, was a humble woman. “God has not given me such powers. I do not possess such a gift. What do you imagine? How could I heal you?” But Macrina would not yield at all. “Make the sign of the Cross over me, and if I am not healed, I will go.”

“Very well. I will make the sign of the Cross over you. Open your garment and unfasten it.” “I will not unfasten it.” “You will not?” “No.” “Then how can this be done?” “Put your hand inside here without looking, and you will find the place. It is burning hot, and there is a growth there. Make the sign of the Cross over it.” “But my child, I gave birth to you.” “You may have given birth to me, but my body belongs to Christ. It belongs neither to you nor to anyone else.” Her mother yielded. Without the girl opening her bodice or exposing herself, she put her hand inside, felt for the place, and made the sign of the Cross over it. At her mother’s blessing with the sign of the Cross, the growth disappeared, the fever subsided, and a cross remained beneath her breast as a testimony to the young woman’s purity and chastity. The bishop found it when they were preparing her body for burial, and the other woman told him the whole story. Yes—but where do we find such things today? Nothing remains. So, as the saying tells us, a virgin is not merely one who has abstained from intercourse, but one who is modest even about seeing his or her own body—not only the body of another man or woman, or another person’s nakedness and so forth. Today, just look at the magazines: everything is exposed.

Everything is laid bare. One evening I had gone to the Hygeia Hospital to visit someone from our area. I went downstairs and saw a large newsstand displaying magazines. On one cover was a completely naked woman—not even a fig leaf, nothing. I was puzzled, so I put on my glasses to look. I thought, “If someone sees me, he will say, ‘Look at that foolish old man—he has lost his senses.’” I simply wondered whether my eyes were seeing correctly. Was I mistaken? What was this? She truly did not have even a fig leaf. And now, with the European Economic Community, do not imagine that such things will not reach us here. At present they circulate secretly; soon public nudity will be officially accepted. The last time I was returning from America, the plane stopped in Paris, and ten or fifteen Japanese students boarded. They later got off in Rome. They had bought magazines in Paris.

One of them sat in the seat just ahead and beside me. Whether I wanted to or not, I could see. The magazines showed completely naked women in utterly shameful poses—nothing concealed, legs spread, everything the mind can imagine, in full color and so forth. And these magazines are sold openly at newsstands for anyone to buy. Do you understand how far we have fallen? They will now reach us through the European Economic Community. They will come here as Community products, and you will not be able to exclude them. Do you understand what is happening and where we are going? In any case, I say these things so that people may be watchful—if they wish. If they do not, that is their affair. Now let me make a distinction, because many people are scandalized by the subject of marriage and virginity. In the same way, when they hear that some woman has left to become a nun, they are scandalized.

Or they hear that some man is going to become a monk. “What a waste of youth! Can you imagine? Is there anything more backward? A person goes and shuts himself away in there.” You try shutting yourself away there, even if I pay you ten thousand a day. You would not last twenty-four hours. It takes courage to go there; it is not weakness, as some people say. If you go to the Holy Mountain today, for example, you could gather together five hundred university degrees. There are courageous young men with two degrees each—doctors, architects, physiologists, and specialists of every kind. In that wilderness you could count more than five hundred degrees. These are young men with every prospect of making a career and enjoying life, but they have no taste for the filth of this society. And if you visit other monasteries—for example, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian at Souroti, just outside Thessaloniki—there are sixty-five nuns, all of them educated women with degrees. Altogether, you could probably count around one hundred and ten degrees among them.

If you go to another monastery across from Siva, there are thirty-three nuns, and twenty-seven of them hold degrees—some one degree, some two, and so on. The world finds it strange that someone would leave all its pleasures and go away. But if you taste the things above, you renounce the things below. The problem is that you have not tasted the things above. So you imagine that the monastery is a prison, that monastic life is a failure, and that everyone there is a failure. Yet no one else can feel the happiness they experience when they come into communion with Christ. This is why there is such a great difference: thirtyfold for the married, a hundredfold for the unmarried—for true virgins who possess a humble mind. I will offer you several comparisons between marriage and virginity. Again, these are not my own words, but those of others. John Chrysostom, for example, says of marriage:

“Marriage is honorable, but it is not holy.” It is honorable, yet not holy. He says this because it permits bodily pleasures between husband and wife, which may at times become unseemly. He calls marriage honorable, but not holy. Holiness, in this comparison, belongs to virginity and purity. There holiness remains. And he calls it “a good freely chosen.”

Freely chosen—that is, voluntary. I enter upon it willingly, and I struggle. It is a voluntary good, a good freely chosen. But how many of us would actually desire this? We do not desire it. Augustine, who is called blessed, says the following: “The life of virginity is an angelic way of life.” Just as the angels possess no property, have no self-will, and have no bodily desires or relations, so “the life of virginity is an angelic way of life, and in a corruptible body it is the study of eternal incorruption.” In a corruptible body, he says, this incorruption is learned and put into practice. Saint Jerome also says:

“Virginity is the way of life of Christ, bearing an angelic likeness.” Saint Ignatius says that he “called virgins the priestesses of Christ.” He called virgins the priestesses of Christ. Ambrose of Milan calls virgins “martyrs,” because they struggle every day. The flesh comes against you, the imagination comes, Satan comes, and you struggle and say, “No, no, no.” Someone facing bodily martyrdom may endure for a minute, two minutes, half an hour, an hour, a day, two days, or three, and then it will pass. But Satan may come and fight against you continually for two years, and every time you must stand firm. Saint Nicodemus says, “So excellent is virginity...”

“...that even marriage is of no benefit without it.” You take a woman, live with her for five or ten years—however long—until nothing pure remains, and afterward you marry her. What new thing has marriage offered? More likely, only weariness and disgust. Perhaps ten days later there will be a divorce. We have many such cases. Such a marriage, he says, is of no benefit unless both the man and the woman are chaste and enter it pure. Saint Isidore of Pelusium says: “Through chastity man becomes like the angels, but through marriage he differs in no way from the beasts,” for whom mating is a necessity.

Man need not regard it as an absolute necessity, because if he reflects on what is higher, he can set aside this urge that presents itself as necessary for a moment. And there is one more saying, from the divine Chrysostom, which may well apply to many of us.

He says: “It is a mockery”—something absurd—“to preserve the organs of procreation in virginity, but not preserve the tongue.” Can a virgin allow that tongue to run like a copying machine? Virginity also requires every other aspect of chastity: you must guard your eyes, your tongue, your manner of dress—everything. A virgin cannot resemble the columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus: the columns remain standing, while everything else has collapsed. So he says: “It is a mockery to preserve the organs of procreation in virginity but not preserve the tongue; or to preserve the tongue in virginity but not guard the sight, the hearing, or the hands; or to possess and preserve all these in virginity but fail to guard the heart, allowing it to wander in pride and anger.”

None of these other faults should be found in a person who is struggling to live rightly. You may present yourself as a virgin to your spouse or to the Lord, but you must also preserve virginity in all your other senses. In other words, those things mentioned in the Prayer of Saint Ephrem—idle talk, idleness, and meddling—must be set aside, so that the person may become whole and upright, as God desires and as He created that person to be. But we shall stop here, because there is not enough time to continue with the rest. God willing, we shall continue the subject in our next talk.

Της είχε δώσει, όπως λέμε σήμερα αποστάσιο το λέγαν τότε, ένα χαρτί ότι μπορεί η γυναίκα να φύγει και να πάει να παντρευτεί παρακάτω, δεν θεωρείται μοιχαλίς. Και του λέγουν: Λέγουσιν ουν αυτώ, τι ουν Μωυσής ενετείλατο δούναι βιβλίον αποστασίου;

Έχουν τη γνώμη οι άνθρωποι ότι τα κάνουν τα ανδρόγυνα τα παιδιά. Πώς, θα πάω με τον άντρα μου, θα πάω με τη γυναίκα μου, θα κάνω παιδί. Σοβαρά; Πόσοι δεν πάνε με τον άντρα και με τη γυναίκα τους και δεν κάνουνε; Και χτυπιούνται και κάτω και δεν κάνουνε. Πόσοι; Πολλοί, χιλιάδες δεν κάνουνε. Γιατί δεν κάνουνε; Και γιατί ένας κάνει ένα και μετά κάνει σε πέντε χρόνια άλλο, και άλλος μετά πέντε χρόνια άλλο; Κάτι παροξύτονα πράγματα που τραβάς τα μαλλιά σου. Ποιος θα κάνει;

Ψυχικώς, γιατί πορνεία και μοιχεία δεν είναι σαρκικά μόνα αμαρτήματα, είναι και πνευματικά. Όποιος, λέει, δει με το μάτι του τη γυναίκα και πονηρεύτηκε, εμοίχευσε εν τη καρδία του. Ποιος είναι καθαρός από ρύπου στην περίπτωση αυτή, σύμφωνα με το μέτρο που δίνει ο Χριστός; Όχι ό,τι λέει ο κόσμος και οι κοινωνιολόγοι και οι άπιστοι ιατροί. Αυτό που λέει ο Χριστός, γιατί αυτός θα κρίνει. Η μεζούρα είναι δικιά του και η παλάντζα είναι δικιά του, δεν είναι δικιά μου ή δικιά σας. Εδώ, λοιπόν, λέγει αυτός: «Παρθένος», λέει, «δεν είναι μόνο εκείνος ο οποίος δεν θα έρθει σε επαφή με το έτερον, αν πρόκειται περί γυναικός με άντρα ή ανδρός με γυναίκα, αλλά αυτός ο οποίος ντρέπεται να ιδεί και τον εαυτόν του ακόμη γυμνόν». Τώρα, βέβαια, αυτό ίσως λίγο οξύμωρο θα πει κανείς. Μπορείς να μη δεις τον εαυτό σου;

Ευχαριστώ. Δεν γύρισα να τις κοιτάξω, να μην έλεγαν. Τους είπα μόνο αυτό: «Να σβήνετε το φως όταν αλλάζετε», και δεν θα το δείτε αυτό. Αλλά πού, πού αυτά τα πράγματα σήμερα, που βλέπεις τη μάνα και γυρίζει μέσα στο σπίτι με παιδιά 15, 16, 18 χρονών και γυρίζει, λέει, εκεί στο καμπαρέ; Πού, πού ο σεβασμός; Πού είναι αυτά τα πράγματα; Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ σας της Αγίας Μακρίνας τον βίο, αδελφοί; Του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου η Αγία Μακρίνα, ε;

Άφησε τα αποτυπώματά της από τα γόνατά της και από τα δάκρυά της σε λάσπη εκεί, μέσα στην εκκλησία. Πρωί, όταν χάραζε, σηκώθηκε για να πάει στο κελί της, γιατί κατάλαβε η μητέρα θα σηκώνεται πρωί, να μην τη βρει σ' αυτήν την κατάσταση. Και ζητούσε από τον Χριστό και από την Παναγία να τη βοηθήσει να μην πάει στον γιατρό. Δεν ήθελε να δείξει το σώμα της. Αποτέλεσμα;
