Summary
The Prayer of Saint Ephrem identifies idle talk as a destructive passion from which Christians should ask God for deliverance. The Epistle of James compares the tongue to a horse’s bridle, a ship’s rudder, and a small fire capable of directing or destroying an entire life. Especially during fasting, Christians should fast from needless words, restrain gossip, apologize quickly for harmful speech, and use their remaining time for repentance.

We were together for our previous talk. You will remember that we were speaking about this short Prayer of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, which contains certain guiding themes that help a person advance toward perfection. For those who are unfamiliar with it, or who do not remember it, the prayer is as follows: “O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust for power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity and humility...”
A prayer, as you know.
And as you can hear, it is small in size, but profound in its meanings and guiding themes. The other day, as far as God permitted, and as I see from my notes here, we spoke...
...about the first three themes: the spirit of sloth, meddling, and lust for power. Tonight, by the grace of God, we shall go on to say a few words about the fourth part, what is called idle talk. A person recognizes what falls from his tongue...
...and says: “I beg You, do as David said: put a zipper on my mouth—‘Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth.’” Idle talk is something from which I do not know who is free. I believe that if Christ measures us with His own measure and weighs us on His own scales, almost no one will be found clean. Man was not made to fill the air with words—words that are often useless and unnecessary, and very often harmful as well. The Saints of God, and David in particular, say:
“Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.”
Everything a person says, every word for which he opens his mouth, must be so well formed, seasoned, and carefully considered that it becomes an occasion for God to be glorified, either by serving one’s neighbor or by glorifying God directly. Elsewhere David says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” In both these things we fall short. If there were some way to record everything we say from the moment we wake in the morning until we lie down at night, and then listen to it, we would be ashamed.
We might find that we had not spoken even one word for the benefit of our soul or for the glory of God. And yet man was made for this purpose alone. He has no other calling here on earth. Our work, of course, often compels us to say more. But even then we must be restrained and careful. Idle talk, as this Saint presents it here, is not pleasing to God. A person’s tongue must be restrained. God placed teeth in front of it so that sometimes we might bite it. But we have not paid attention to how He fashioned these things. We think we can say whatever we please, and so we begin...
...in the morning, on the telephone, for half an hour, three quarters of an hour, an hour, talking about anything and everything: repeating what happened before, what we did or saw last night, or what we imagine certain other people might do, and so forth. We engage in idle talk and chatter, even though a person has so much work to do in caring for his immortal soul that he ought to keep his mouth closed. The mouth should speak only when it is called upon to do so, and not at any other time. But ours runs away with us; it slips and flows. We often hear someone say, “Have you eaten purslane?” In other words, your tongue keeps slipping away. Why can you not restrain it? Have you still not finished? Everything you said was useless. What good does it do? Does anything come from it? Does it have any saving or beneficial content or substance?
Does any saving or beneficial good come from these words? Why did you say them? Why did you reel them off? Why did you discuss them, and for whom? Nor is only the speaker at fault; the listener is also at fault and, according to Saint Basil the Great, is equally complicit. For if I refuse to sit and listen to you, will you go on speaking? Or if you refuse to sit and listen to me, will I go on speaking? No, I will not.
But I sit and listen to you because I enjoy it too. Of course, many people become overbearing, while others are embarrassed to cut them off. “Oh, she called me and kept me pinned to the telephone.” Sometimes I call home and the line is busy for fifteen minutes. I keep calling because I need something, but she is still talking. At last I reach my wife. “That telephone was on fire,” I say. “What happened?” “That lady from such-and-such a place called, and...”
And sometimes the telephone conversation simply will not end. Sometimes the telephone might ‘break’: hang up, take the receiver off the hook, and put it down so that you can escape. Later you can say there was some fault on the line, some crossed connection—you know how these things happen. Find a way to free yourself. Does the other person have the right to talk for hours? Is that what you want? What is the matter about? If it is a serious matter, then you must listen...
...so that you can form an opinion and gain a clear picture, act properly, and consider whether you can offer help in that situation. That I understand. Let it take not fifteen minutes but a hundred times fifteen minutes. And let it cost not ten drachmas but ten million. But for the most part, these conversations are not like that. No benefit comes from them; they do not prevent some harmful situation or help heal anything. We simply discuss things and allow ourselves to be carried away.
Christ says, “For every idle word, I will bring you into judgment.” You have no right to squander your hours, to kill time with endless talking and discussion. What were you talking about? What were you saying? Were you praying? Giving counsel? Asking a question? What were you doing, and what was it about? Idle talk is a very ugly thing—very ugly indeed—and I dare say that it belongs among the deadly sins. And perhaps what I am about to say will miss the mark, but I do not think any of us has ever confessed the sins of his tongue. We may say, “My daughter-in-law’s mother called me and said, ‘You know, my daughter-in-law...’” Yes. “Do you know that the people upstairs shake out their sheets?” Yes. “You know, you know, you know...” But the tongue itself has never been discussed.
What do I talk about from morning until night? I talk nonsense. And it does not stop there, because when you speak words with no substance and no serious purpose, you will eventually begin accusing people. You will attack the clergy, your neighbor, the authorities, or anyone else, and then—woe to us—there will be further slanders and further condemnations. One thing produces another, and it multiplies. Think about it. I pray that your mouth may be sanctified and open only when it should. Yet from my own small experience, as I observe myself and often repent, even lies slip into our speech so that we can construct some sort of...
...better account or present some idea more effectively. These are useless, unnecessary things. They are sins, and a Christian must weigh his words, knowing when to open his mouth and when not to open it. A person is judged not only for what he says, but also for what he does not say. And it takes greater strength not to speak than to speak. Often, when we want to speak and slip into the conversation, the devil helps us along. But not to speak—that requires great strength. Something rises within you and urges you to speak. You think it would be foolish not to join the discussion, not to talk, not to display yourself, and so on and so forth. All this was satanic. A restrained Christian, even if he knows a great deal, does not rush to speak unless he is asked. And even if he is asked, he speaks only when he is obliged to, when he sees that it will be beneficial, fitting, necessary, and required. Then he draws from his treasury, still with humility, and, if possible, speaks in the third person. He should always be modest in his words. And if it is merely his own opinion, he should say, “I read this somewhere,” or, “I heard this somewhere, I believe.” Attribute it to a third party.
It is a great thing to open your mouth and speak—to restrain that throat which, from morning until night, pours out foolishness and sins, staining and defiling us. A great thing indeed. Have you ever read the Epistle of James the Brother of the Lord, especially, if I am not mistaken, its third chapter, to see what it says about this little piece of flesh here inside us, called the tongue? What is it, and how must a person guard and use it? Listen to what he says: “Let not many of you become teachers.” Do not rush to present yourselves as professors, he says. Do not become teachers, my brethren...
...“knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” For when we set ourselves up as teachers of others while failing to do what we tell them—and this is what usually happens with us—we become those who teach but do not act. Yet Scripture says, “Whoever does and teaches shall be called great,” not whoever teaches without doing. Therefore, he says, “we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things.” And James includes himself. He does not say, “You stumble”; he says, “We all stumble.” If James says these things, should I be saying them? “If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man.” “Does not stumble in word.” He did not say, if he has not murdered, if he has not stolen, if he has not committed fornication, and so on. A perfect man...
...a sound person, a true Christian, as we would say, is one who does not stumble in word—that is, with the tongue. This is where he places the emphasis. “If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.” The person who has the strength to restrain and guard his tongue, using it where and whenever he sees fit—no, not whenever he sees fit, but only where and as he ought—this person, he says, is sound. He then gives an example: “Indeed, we put bits into horses’ mouths so that they may obey us.”
We put bits, or bridles as they are called, into horses’ mouths. The bit holds down and presses the tongue; it is a piece of iron, in this sense, and when the rider pulls it, it pins the horse’s tongue inside its mouth and forces the animal to go where the rider wishes. Because of the pain it feels, the horse is compelled to submit and go wherever its rider directs. It cannot go wherever it wishes. “Indeed,” he says, “we put bits into horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.” An entire horse, a whole great beast, can be turned, moved, carried, and guided wherever you wish.
And look at ships too, he says—ships as well. Think of an ocean liner! It is directed by a tiny rudder at the stern, like a tongue back there. Turn that rudder, and you can steer that whole giant vessel wherever you wish—into the waves, to the right, or to the left. He compares the tongue to the rudder, showing us what the tongue is to the human person.
“Behold, the ships also, though they are so great”—whole vessels—“and are driven by fierce winds,” winds that, if left unchecked, could smash them to pieces, “are turned about by a very small rudder.” They are guided by the smallest rudder wherever the pilot desires.
Wherever the one steering the ship wishes, he takes it by means of that tiny rudder—such a small thing controlling that enormous vessel. “Even so the tongue is a little member.” It is almost nothing. Indeed, it is so well hidden that no one would know another person had a tongue if he did not have one himself. Can you see the tongue? Even while I am speaking, you cannot see it. I would have to stick it out for you to see that I have one. And so the Saint develops his thought with this example: “The tongue is a little member and boasts great things.” You know how we say, “Goodness, what venom! What a tongue that person has!” Do we mean that the tongue literally grew large, swelled up, and stretched outward? No; we mean the words that were spoken. The tongue was used in such a way that it became enormous. Alas! The person may be small in stature, but what a tongue! That is precisely what the Apostle is saying here.
He says that it is a small member, yet it boasts great things. “Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles!” Just as a single match can start a fire that burns entire cities, so too the tongue, if it is not guarded and speaks needless, ugly, or bitter words—ah, what damage that tongue can do! Many people say that speech was given to man so that he could talk, converse, pass the time, or “kill time,” as they put it. But that is not its purpose. “And the tongue is a fire,” he says, “a world of unrighteousness.” If a person does not guard his tongue, he commits injustice through it. “A world of unrighteousness. Thus the tongue is set among our members.”
It stains the whole body. If you do not guard it, your tongue can stain your reputation, defile you, blacken your name, and put you to shame. Yet the tongue is itself something good, because, as you know, it was not given to cause harm. As we said at the beginning, it was given to glorify God. Nevertheless, if a person does not use it properly and guard it carefully, it produces the opposite result.
It is the tongue, then, that “sets on fire the whole course of our life, and is itself set on fire by Hell. For every kind of beast and bird, reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue.”
“It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless God and the Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth from the same opening both fresh water and bitter? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a spring yield both salt water and fresh.” In other words, the tongue should be used by people only for what is good—not for evil and not for needless talk. The tongue must always be used for a good purpose. Yet someone may object—and some do have good reason to ask:
“What fault is it of the tongue? Why blame my tongue? Is the tongue itself doing these things?” No, it is not. Let us speak fairly and not wrong the tongue, lest it hear us and become angry! The tongue itself is not at fault. It is neither good nor evil. It is like money: use it for good and it is good; use it for evil and it is evil. Of itself, it is neither. The same is true of the tongue. Of course, as an instrument it is a mystery—something that leaves the human nous, the spiritual intellect, in wonder. Later I shall tell you about one of its remarkable qualities, which perhaps you have never noticed. But its use depends upon the inner person. It is the person within
who uses the tongue either to praise God or to blaspheme God. The person himself is responsible—the master of the house, as we might say. The tongue is a violin, and the person is the violinist who plays it. If the violinist is good, the violin brings the angels down from heaven. If the violinist is bad, it drives even the mice away. Do you understand? That is how it is. The tongue itself is not at fault; we are. And if a person is not careful to have Christ within, he will fall into idle talk, slander, and accusations against sacred persons. What evil will he not have? With that tongue he will tear everything apart. Why? Because the master within is not as he ought to be.
Let me give you an example. In Matthew 16:16, we read that Christ once asked His disciples who the people said He was. “When you go about among the people, what do they say about Me? Who do they think I am?” They gave Him the various opinions they had heard. Some said He was the Prophet Jeremiah; others said He was John the Forerunner; and still others said He was one of the prophets. “Very well,” He said, “that is what they say.”
“But you—who do you say that the Son of Man is? Tell Me.” Then Peter spoke up and said, “You are the Son of God.”
“You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” That is what he said—not the son of some imagined god, but the Son of the true God, the living God. “You are Christ.” The Lord rejoiced at this confession, because this was the answer He wished to draw from them, and it was the true answer. This confession is the foundation of the Gospel: the divinity of Jesus, His becoming man, and the Resurrection of Jesus. Everything rests upon these three truths. Christ therefore calls Peter blessed and says to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,” because flesh and blood did not reveal to you this most precious truth. You did not say it merely from yourself; My Father revealed it to you. At that moment your tongue received its knowledge from My Father and made a true confession.
“I am the Son of the living God.” Peter is called blessed, and Christ also changes his name there, as He had promised earlier, saying that he would be called Cephas, which is translated Peter, and so forth. That conversation ends, and Christ goes on to give them a prophecy: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem.” Immediately afterward He tells them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed.” Peter hears this, and as soon as Christ has finished, it is as though he says, “Teacher, may I speak with You?” He takes the Teacher aside. “What is it?” Peter says to Him, “God forbid, Lord! This shall not happen to You”—in other words, “You must not go up there.” But Christ answers, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God,
but of the things of men.” Blessed Peter, through whom God had spoken just before, now becomes the one through whom the devil speaks. The devil is speaking through him. Do you grasp it? This is the point. That little piece of flesh is not to blame. The question is: who is within? Who enters in and uses this thing called the tongue? Who makes it utter needless words, shameful things, indecencies, and obscenities? Someone may say of a foul-mouthed person, “An open heart is an open sewer.” But was it not Satan who spoke those indecent words through that person? And then people call this “an open heart”! Do you see what kind of heart they mean?
Whether it is some woman, some public official, or anyone else, it is not an open heart but an open sewer.
So do not quarrel with your tongue; deal with the master who lives within. There is a master within you, and he is the one who uses the tongue in idle talk, either for good or for evil. If we change inwardly and become spiritual people, then the tongue will no longer speak foolishness, nonsense, or needless words. Nor would we need to beg God, “Guard us.” When Saint Ephrem says, “Give me not,” he means, “Guard me,” because God does not give such things. Do not allow the spirit of idle talk to enter and settle within me. Do not allow this tongue of mine—which was made to glorify You, to speak and convey Your truth, so that people may be illumined and saved and Your name glorified—to become an instrument used by Satan.
I repeat: those of us who understand this, at least to some degree, could greatly reduce the sin of idle talk if we did not sit and listen to people who are spiritually ill and have another master, another lord, within them. We could limit this fault. But instead we remain with them; sometimes they corner us on the street, and we listen as they talk, thereby producing the opposite result. Saint Basil the Great says that we become accomplices when we sit and listen to idle words, which are usually sinful, because they concern someone who is absent. People do not speak this way about someone who is present, but about someone who is absent.
That is condemnation, and we share in the guilt because we gave the speaker freedom and made it easy for him to utter those words instead of stopping him. This has happened to me many times, and people have become cold toward me because I said, “I do not want to hear it.” But is that proper for Christians? Of course it is not merely proper; it is necessary. When you come to accuse someone or speak to me about a person who is absent, I do not want to listen. “But it is true,” you say. Very well; that does not concern me. I do not want to hear it. I stop the conversation, and then that person never brings such things to me again. If another person says the same, and another, and another, those listeners are delivered from complicity, while at the same time they help the speaker understand something. So let us also take care how we conduct ourselves.
We must use rightly this precious instrument God has given us. I mentioned earlier that it possesses a quality which by itself makes it precious beyond measure: it is like a laboratory that can identify ten or twenty things in a single minute. Put various liquids into several bottles and take them to a laboratory for analysis. They will ask, “How many samples are there—ten or twenty? Come back in a week for the results.” But place something sour, astringent, bitter, salty, or sweet on the tongue, and immediately it answers: one, two, three. It can distinguish them all at once.
We carry this little chemical laboratory inside our mouths. Think about that. What is it? What a mystery! Who fashioned it? Did “Mother Nature” make it? No, the Elder above made it. It is a great thing. Yet because He has enclosed this precious instrument within us, we must guard it carefully. It can also become a great evil if it falls into the wrong spiritual hands. See what the wise Sirach says. You become bitter toward someone. Satan comes and kindles a little coal within you—perhaps because of a word, some careless behavior, some personal interest, or something else. You become bitter toward that person, and immediately the coal begins to burn!
A little coal begins to burn within you. Can a single coal become a great fire? It can. When? When we pile wood upon it. Can that coal be put out? How? When? By spitting on it. And what is the wood? The words people add: “You know what they said.” “You were not there to hear it.” “I was there, and I am telling you,” and so on. They keep adding words until that spark becomes a raging fire. Husbands and wives separate; even crimes are committed. Yet the same mouth could have spat on the coal and put it out: “I was there, and I heard nothing. Go with God’s blessing. Do not listen to what people say.” In this way, it prevents evil before it begins. “Mother, I heard that Katina upset you today.”
“My child, upset me? The poor woman was worn out with the children. If she happened to say something, am I going to take offense? Do I not know what mothers go through? Have I not been through it myself?” With those words, the coal is put out. But the grandmother could have said instead, “Of course! With that little beast you left me here, what do you expect me to do? What do you expect me to suffer?” She would be throwing wood on the fire, until the Most Holy Theotokos is blasphemed, the married couple separates, and the young husband says, “I can find another wife, but I cannot find another mother.” Do you understand? And then comes disaster. From the same mouth, he says, come both what is divine and what sets things on fire. Do you understand? This, then, comes from within the human person. This tongue that God has given me can accomplish many things.
So let us not use it for needless things, since it has such a lofty calling.
We use it for base things. Let us not defile it. Let us not defile this tongue with words of that kind. Let us not defile it. This is what God asks of us. We Christians, at least, do so many things with this tongue: we open our mouths and extend it to receive Christ within us—and that burning coal enters there. It is one thing for a word to escape me in a moment of anger, or for me to say something wrong and then hasten to say, “Forgive me, my child. Forgive me, sir. I lost control of myself; I should not have said that. Please pray for me. I am quick-tempered, and I know that words slip out.” That is a different matter. Some people, however, think they may say whatever they like and keep talking without restraint;
they may malign, slander, and publicly disgrace others. They use this instrument with its lofty calling—the only instrument that speaks with God—for such base purposes. Especially now, during these days of fasting, those who intend to fast should take care to fast from words as well. Let them fast from all this needless chatter about one thing and another, which offers nothing and merely steals a person’s time. Human beings were not made to kill time. Time is not a beast to be killed; it is something to be put to good use. The kindness and patient endurance of God grant it to us. Is it within anyone’s power or right to add even a fraction of a second to his life in this world?
It is He who adds time through His goodness. And Paul, writing to the Romans, says, “Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to metanoia, to repentance?” The time added to your life is not given so that, with your tongue, you may heap sin upon sin. It is given so that you may wipe sins away and cry out, “I have sinned; have mercy on me, Lord.” This is both the most powerful and the easiest prayer. In any case, forgive me for speaking to you in this tone. But many of us are guilty of this idle talk and of speaking about needless things, and afterward we repent. Those who live a religious life and go to confession frequently later catch themselves and realize their guilt: Why did you say that?
What need was there to say all those things? And why did you add that lie? Why did you do the other thing? This is what happens to those who are watchful. Yet Satan deceives them and defiles this tongue, until the matter must be brought to confession: “I said this and that while the other person was absent. I did such and such. I did not use my tongue for the purpose and calling for which God gave it to me.” If you wish, and if you think there is good reason to discuss these things, then you may intervene and say, “What do you think? Let me hear your view as well,” and so on. But no matter what people tell you, there is no reason to enter into such talk. Others sit in cafés or on benches discussing politics, worry beads in hand, condemning the government, foreign affairs, domestic affairs, the priests—everyone. Is that why the tongue was given to you?
Is that why you were given this credit of time? Is that why you were allowed to live long enough to receive your pension—so that you could discuss such things and use your tongue for them? Woe to you! When will you pray about your sins? When will you speak about your sins? When will you speak with God about all the things you have failed to do until now? When will you consider them? When will you read and search for the truth? When will you write down your sins and go to confession? When? For what purpose were all these things given to you—all this patient endurance of God, by which He has added this time to your life? Even now, every morning, you reach beneath your pillow and draw out another two hundred, three hundred, five hundred thousand. Do you imagine that all this is given to you so that you may continue sinning in this way? No. This is the patient endurance of God, which is offered to a person and at the same time leaves him without excuse. For my part, I have done what I ought to do, like a good father and a good brother who cares about your salvation.
Do you want to make good use of it? For, you see, we also possess free will, which God Himself will not override. But will we choose rightly? Let us choose rightly. In any case, this concludes the part of the prayer concerning what God is asked not to permit and not to give—that is, what He is asked not to permit. That is what it means. God does not give idle talk, but He may permit it. So the prayer asks Him not to permit it. Then it goes on to ask what He should give: “But grant me, Your servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patient endurance, and love.” This is a gift, a grace freely bestowed. It does not say, “Sell it to me.” Some of these gifts cannot be bought. They are freely given by God: “Grant it to me, Your servant.”
Open Your generous hand and show Your mercy to me as well. Give me too this gift, this spirit of humility—forgive me, of chastity. Have you ever read the Epistle to the Galatians? There, in Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty, it speaks of the fruits of the Holy Spirit: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, goodness, kindness, meekness, self-control.” It presents all these as fruits of the Holy Spirit. And here the prayer says, “a spirit of chastity”—that is, grace. There is, as it were, a tree called the Holy Spirit,
which gives all these gifts to human beings. Do not tell a person that he must have love, self-control, this virtue, that virtue, and so forth, if he does not have their mother, their root, their trunk. The trunk is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit abides in the Holy Church and is given to the human person through the Mysteries—specifically through the Holy Eucharist, through Holy Communion. A person who has no relationship with Holy Communion consequently does not have the grace whose natural fruits are all these good things.
A person needs chastity and soundness of mind, in both spirit and body. But how can he attain this? He cannot do it by himself. “Against such things,” Paul says, “there is no law.” For these things, he says, human strength is not enough. A person is like a trolleybus without its contact pole. What can a trolleybus do without that connection? Where can it go? How can it move or make any progress? But once its pole catches the overhead wire, nothing can hold it back—no obstacle, no load, neither uphill nor downhill.
The current flows down into it: there you have grace, empowering that great machine and enabling it to accomplish what it could not accomplish before. Even if ten or twenty people came down and tried to push it with all their strength, how far would they move it? A yard or two; and if it were uphill, they would not move it at all. This is the human person without Christ, without the grace of the Holy Spirit. The other is the person connected to the current: the human person with Christ and with the grace of the Holy Spirit. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, a person accomplishes many things—indeed, everything. “I desire it, Lord, but You alone can do it.” At once there is a humble disposition. The only contribution a person can make is
his own will, his humble disposition, and his sins, if he has them. And if, with God’s help, there are no grave sins, then humility is still indispensable. Throughout his entire life, a person must remain humble and modest. He must never become conceited and imagine that he is something important—whether in the world, in the Church, in virtue, or in anything else. He must always remain humble.
Look: when people are driving, they keep their foot on the accelerator, and by pressing it they continue along the road wherever they wish to go. When they lift their foot from it, the opposite happens. As long as your appliance remains connected to the socket, you have power: you can work and enjoy its benefits. But when you remove the plug from the current, the iron grows cold, the heater stops, the elevator stops, and so do all these other things. Why? Because you have cut them off from the source. Remaining in contact with that source—maintaining this disposition of humility—allows you to enjoy all the good things that flow from the grace of the Holy Spirit. If you read the prayers of Saint Basil the Great concerning the Holy Eucharist, and especially the prayer concerning what the Eucharist may become in the one who receives it, you will find twenty-three virtues that the grace of the Holy Spirit bestows upon the human person. The person does not produce them. He offers himself, and the grace of the Holy Spirit gives these virtues, these gifts. Is it easy to be chaste? Is it easy for a young man to remain chaste and a virgin? Is it easy for a young woman to remain a virgin?
“Unless it is given.” Unless the Lord gives it—unless the person struggles and the Lord grants it—it is impossible. It cannot be done. Human effort does not cut away sins, nor does it create virtues. The virtues belong to the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, grace itself, is what brings all these things about. Are we, then, people of chastity and sound judgment? Are our actions in life the actions of a sober-minded person? Who is sober-minded? The one who remembers that he will die, who remembers that he will be judged, who knows that he did not come into this world simply to live, and who knows that one day he will go to judgment and stand before God. That person acts wisely; that is the person whose mind is sound.
The other person has become carried away and conceited, and his actions are the opposite. A woman today smokes even though she is ill. Is she acting with sound judgment? I ask you: is she? Is that leading anywhere good? Another drinks his ouzo and ruins his liver; he develops cirrhosis. Is he acting with sound judgment? Another gambles away his property at cards. Is he acting with sound judgment?
Another seduces someone else’s wife and leads her astray. Is he acting with sound judgment? A woman leads astray another woman’s husband, the father of her children. Are these ladies and gentlemen acting with sound judgment? Tell me, are they? Are these rational deeds? They are not rational but irrational. A person who does not act in such a way as to safeguard his immortal soul is not in his right mind.
And this humble man asks God for such a spirit because, when he sat down to compose this short prayer—which our Church found among his manuscripts, took up, and placed in her services because she saw that it was edifying, concise, and filled with powerful and necessary petitions—he himself must first have felt this need. We now receive the prayer from his life and seek to place it within our own lives. And he asks for a spirit of chastity and soundness of mind: “Give me understanding; keep my mind steady.” You have seen how the head of every Saint is surrounded by a halo. It is grace, which surpasses every nous, every spiritual intellect.
Unless the grace of the Holy Spirit surrounds and protects a person’s nous, the spiritual intellect, Satan will bring it down with his flaming arrows. Grace is what guards a person. “Give me chastity,” a woman must say. “Give me purity, so that I may belong to him alone and let him imprint upon me whatever he wills,” as the Most Holy Theotokos did. If she is unmarried, she should say, “Give me chastity, so that I may remain pure, whatever may happen to me, until I receive my wedding crown.” A young man must ask the same, and so must everyone else. You must ask for this. The world comes to bombard it and blow it apart in various ways. And when a person yields to it, he is no longer sound-minded, but out of his mind.
Notice what the prodigal son said: “But when he came to himself.” Where had he been before? Outside himself. When a person acts against his immortal soul, he is not himself; he has lost his footing and is not sound-minded. In our plain way of speaking, he is senseless; he is mad. And so, as I was saying, this is the grace that he asks for.
This Saint asks God for that grace. I do not know whether you have ever asked for it yourselves. Solomon asked for this soundness of mind. You remember that when God visited him by night and asked what he wished Him to give him, Solomon said: “Give me sound judgment; give me understanding; give me wisdom. I cannot govern Your people unless You give it to me.” He asked for understanding, and this pleased God so greatly that He said to him: “Because you did not ask Me for strength against your enemies, or for riches, or for glory, I will give you wisdom beyond measure, so that no one will be able to stand before your wisdom. And, for My part, I will also add glory and wealth.”
“I Myself will give you all the rest. You asked Me only for wisdom and understanding.” God is deeply moved when He sees humble people. If you wish, and if you have a copy of the Old Testament, I recommend—this comes to mind just now—that you open the tenth chapter of the Wisdom of Solomon. Read the prayer Solomon offered to God. See how humbly he regarded himself as nothing, and how he asked that the wisdom which comes from God should descend upon him from Heaven and fill his mind. Such a man is wise and sound-minded. That is the point. And this is a gift.
It does not spring up from below; it comes down from above. Nor is it given indiscriminately, but only to those who have prepared themselves, for the more a person prepares, the more he receives. This is the meaning of: “Lord, let Your mercy be upon us, just as we have hoped in You.” The thoughts of these men are very profound. Afterwards, I repent for attempting to discuss them. I am ashamed, and I ask forgiveness of those holy people who wrote these words. How far removed I may be from them! Perhaps even now I am expressing no more than a millionth part of all that lies within these words, within the wisdom of these people. But they saw their own humility. They saw that they had no power of their own, and so they asked God for it, knowing that this grace is given by God.
But do we ask for grace for ourselves? We say, “Lord, give me health.” If we have health, we think everything will work itself out. But what will you do with your health? Ask Him to give you understanding, and even ill health may benefit you more than good health. Ask for understanding; ask for discernment. “Lead me, O Lord, in the way in which I should walk.” “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.” Have you learned these words or not? What will you do with health? Health is good. The people of old used to say, “My health is my wealth.” I have no objection to that. But health does not save us, because we often misuse it. Those who are wasting away in bed may be benefited more than we who flourish in sin. Do you understand? Wisdom, then, must be part of our prayer—for ourselves...
and for those who are influenced by us. “My God, illumine this child. My God, enter his nous, his spiritual intellect, in Your own way and place what is needed there, because we do not possess the power to perform such spiritual surgery.” We do not have this skill when dealing with our children, for example, or with other people who are drowning in sin. God knows where to make the opening; He knows where to enter so as to bring about the result. But the Lord is not entreated for such things. He is entreated for other things—for material things, fleshly things, worldly things. He is not entreated for these deep, spiritual things. And since He is not asked, He does not give, for it is written: “Knock, and it will be opened to you; seek, and you will find.” The one who seeks finds.
As for what the other person does—I do not know—it is mentioned further on. This, then, is what I wished to say briefly concerning these other two subjects as well. And I pray to our holy God that, through the intercessions of the Saint, He may complete in His own way whatever is lacking, because the Saint is present, Christ our God is present, and the grace of the Holy Spirit is present. We are not alone. They are all present to help us in this small effort of ours, so that we too may be benefited during this great and compunctionate season of the Triodion. Amen.

Η χρηστότης του ενιαυτού, της χρηστότητος, Αυτός τον προσθέτει. Και ο Παύλος, ο οποίος γράφει σε Ρωμαίους, λέει: «Ουκ έγνως ότι το χρηστόν του Θεού εις μετάνοιάν σε άγει;» Αυτός ο χρόνος που σου προστίθεται δεν σου προστίθεται να επισωρεύσεις με τη γλώσσα σου αμαρτίες επί αμαρτιών, αλλά να εξαλείψεις, να φωνάξεις το «ήμαρτον, ελέησέ με, Κύριε». Δυνατότερη προσευχή και η ευκολότερη ταυτοχρόνως. Δεν ξέρω, εν πάση περιπτώσει, συγχωρέστε με που σας ομιλώ με αυτό τον τόνο. Όμως πολλοί μας είμεθα ένοχοι σε αυτή την αργολογία, σε περιττά πράγματα. Και μετανοούμε εκ των υστέρων. Όσοι μάλιστα θρησκεύουν και εξομολογούνται συχνά, συλλαμβάνουν τον εαυτό τους εκ των υστέρων ένοχο. Αυτό γιατί το είπες;
Τι χρειαζόταν να τα πεις αυτά τώρα; Και αυτό το ψέμα γιατί το έβαλες εκεί πέρα; Και εκείνο γιατί το έκανες; Αυτοί δηλαδή που προσέχουν. Όμως τους κλέβει ο σατανάς και αυτή τη γλώσσα τη λερώνει. Και είναι ανάγκη να φτάσει στην εξομολόγηση το θέμα. Ότι εγώ είπα αυτό και αυτό εν απουσία του άλλου. Έκαμα εκείνο. Τη γλώσσα δεν τη χρησιμοποίησα για τον προορισμό και για το σκοπό που μου δόθη από τον Θεό. Αν θέλεις δηλαδή, αν νομίζεις ότι αυτά έχουν λόγο, μπορείς να επέμβεις. Τι λέτε; Να ακούσω κι εγώ κλπ. Όσο σας λένε, δεν έχει κανένα λόγο να μπει στη συζήτηση. Άλλοι που κάθονται και συζητούν πολιτικά πράγματα στα καφενεία, στα παγκάκια, και οι άλλοι με το κομπολόι κατηγορούν την κυβέρνηση, κατηγορούν το εξωτερικό, το εσωτερικό, τους παπάδες, τους πάντας. Γι' αυτό σου δόθηκε η γλώσσα;
Δείτε, όταν ταξιδεύουν, κρατούν το πόδι τους πάντοτε στο γκάζι και, πατώντας το γκάζι, έχουν πάντοτε τον δρόμο τους, που θέλουν να τρέξουν, που θέλουν να προχωρήσουν. Σηκώνοντας, παίρνοντας το χέρι τους από εκεί, το πόδι τους από εκεί, έχουν τα αντίθετα αποτελέσματα. Κρατώντας το χέρι σου στην πρίζα εκεί πέρα, έχεις ρεύμα. Κάνεις εργασίες, απολαμβάνεις τα αγαθά του. Παίρνοντας το χέρι σου από εκεί ή βγάζοντας την πρίζα από το ρεύμα, παγώνει το σίδερο, σταματάει το καλοριφέρ, σταματάει ο ανελκυστήρ και όλα αυτά τα πράγματα. Γιατί; Γιατί απεκόπησες από εκεί πέρα. Αυτό, το να μένεις εκεί στην επαφή, αυτή η διάθεση της ταπεινοφροσύνης, απολαμβάνεις όλα αυτά τα αγαθά που απορρέουν από την χάρη του Πνεύματος του Αγίου. Εάν διαβάσετε τας ευχάς του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, συγκεκριμένως γύρω από την υπόθεση της Θείας Ευχαριστίας και πιο συγκεκριμένα στον μεταλαμβάνοντα, ώστε γενέσθαι εις τον μεταλαμβάνοντα, θα βρείτε 23 αρετές προσφέρει η Χάρις του Πνεύματος του Αγίου εις τον άνθρωπον. Δεν τις κάνει ο άνθρωπος. Ο άνθρωπος προσφέρεται και η Χάρις του Πνεύματος του Αγίου δίδει αυτές τις αρετές, αυτές τις δωρεές. Είναι εύκολο κανείς να σωφρονήσει; Είναι εύκολο ένας νέος να μείνει σώφρων, να μείνει παρθένος; Είναι εύκολο μία νεαρά να μείνει παρθένος;
Ο άλλος έχει πάρει αέρα το κεφάλι του. Αυτά που κάνει είναι αντίθετα. Σας λέγω, καπνίζει η κυρία σήμερα και είναι ασθενής. Είναι σώφρων; Σε ρωτώ, είναι σώφρων; Πάει πουθενά; Πίνει ο άλλος τα ουζάκια του και χαλάει το ήπαρ. Παθαίνει κίρρωση ήπατος. Είναι σώφρων; Χαρτοπαίζει ο άλλος την περιουσία του. Είναι σώφρων;
