Summary
The lecture presents the Prayer of Saint Ephrem as a concise guide to repentance and spiritual cultivation during the Triodion and Great Lent. Discernment is necessary to recognize excuses, discouragement, and delay as temptations and to respond immediately through prayer, the sign of the Cross, and action. Even illness or physical disability cannot prevent meaningful service, because every person can offer prayer, intercession, gratitude, and love for the salvation of others.

Since we now find ourselves in this period of the Triodion, which teaches us so many good things and is so rich in content, as we have said...
I thought I might offer a fuller interpretation of a short prayer from this period of the Triodion. We hear the priest say it during the Hours and at Great Compline in the evening. It is brief but full of meaning. It was composed by Saint Ephrem the Syrian, a great Father of nepsis, or watchfulness. If we put this prayer into practice, then we shall be able to say that this season has fulfilled its purpose and borne good fruit in us.
Of course, this is not the only prayer worthy of our attention during these days; there are many. I have simply gathered these few short passages so that, if you permit me, we might discuss something this evening. And you too will see that we truly need to pay attention to the texts and prayers of the Church. In one stanza, this saintly man addresses a prayer to Christ our God and says: “O Lord and Master of my life, give me not a spirit of idleness, meddlesomeness, lust for power, and idle talk. But grant to me, Your servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patient endurance, and love...”
“...servant. Yes, O Lord and King.” “Give me not a spirit of idleness, meddlesomeness, lust for power, and idle talk. But grant to me, Your servant, a spirit of chastity, humility, patient endurance, and love. Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not to condemn my brother.”
“For blessed are You unto the ages of ages. Amen.” Tell me, who has put this prayer into practice? No one. Yet we are Christians, and we call ourselves Christians. And if someone tells us that we are not Christians, we take offense. Unless a person takes care to cultivate himself deeply within, a title alone will not make him fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. So this is an opportunity, if you wish, to discuss each of these petitions one by one. Let us see what it is asking and whether we...
...have any of these things at all.
“Give me not a spirit of idleness, meddlesomeness, lust for power, and idle talk.” But does God give such things? Does God give you meddlesomeness, making you press your ear to the door, peer through the keyhole, and crane your neck? Does God give such things? Does God tell you to be idle? Does God tell you to lust for power, to want to dominate others and rule over everyone? Does God want you to begin talking in the morning and finish in the evening, while your food burns and your child falls into the fire? Does God want to give such things? The words “give me not” mean: “Do not permit them; do not permit them; guard me from these deadly things.”
If a person reflected that, in a fraction of a second, he might no longer be in this world or within his body—that his last breath might have left him, with no possibility of returning, and that he might be in eternity, remaining in whatever state death found him—would he spend only one hour out of the twenty-four working...?
If such a spirit takes hold of you and you manage to retire at thirty, know that this is not your success; it is your failure. However many years a person lives on earth, he must work. Whether a little or a great deal, whether he is in need or not, he must work. We have confused everything here on earth. You see the constant effort being made to reduce working hours. In former times it was as the Psalmist says: “Man shall go forth to his work and to his labor until evening.”
The daytime was for man. A person worked from sunrise to sunset. At sunrise he went out, and at sunset he returned. He returned to his home; he did not then leave it. Night and darkness are for the beasts of the forest, not for man. Night is for the home, not for the cabaret, the nightclub, the tavern, or anything of the kind. However we may try to arrange it, this cannot be made right. Of course, today we have created a way of life that is beyond all order. Today there are three different worlds. If you observe people, you will see that they fall into three groups.
Rise very early and take the first bus to work. You will see one class of people who, as they pass a church, make the sign of the Cross, and so on. Then, if you go out around ten or eleven, you will see another class of people heading out to look at shop windows and go shopping. And if you go out at nine, ten, or eleven at night, you will see yet another class of people abroad. They return at dawn to sleep, and you have never seen them before; you see them only at night. During the day they sleep until one or two, then they eat and prepare to go out again at night. Now tell me: which of them are with God? Which of them follow God’s appointed order?
Someone will say, “So we are supposed to work day and night? Are we animals?” I did not say that. We should live as God wills—naturally, not unnaturally. God created man with the ability to work. “But I do not need to work.” Really? Your fellow human being is in need. Do you know what it means to be a Christian? To be a Christian means to place yourself at the service of another person and his needs. I place my wallet, my strength, my knowledge, and whatever means I possess at his service. I pick up the telephone and say, “I will speak on your behalf.” What concern is it of yours? Where, in such a case, are the words applied: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength,” and so forth? Where are they applied? Right here. And this spirit of idleness deceives us in many different ways and keeps us in its grasp.
There is a particular demon for it. Just as the sciences among us are divided into branches and specializations, so it is with the devil as well; you should know this. There is one devil of fornication, another of drunkenness, another of sodomy, another of blasphemy, another of adultery, and so on. They have their specializations. One demon acts in the morning, another at noon, and another at night. The demons have their specializations. Do you ever read? Do you pray the Hours at home, or do you stare at that idiot box? In the midday prayer, it asks God to guard us “from the demon of noonday.” There are demons that act at midday.
So there is also a spirit of idleness. When the prayer says “spirit,” it means a devil. When it says, “Guard me; give me not—do not permit—a spirit of idleness, lust for power, and idle talk,” it means: “Do not permit the devil of idleness, of lust for power, and of idle talk to overcome me.” That is what it means. There is, then, a particular spirit. So whenever you see that your duty calls you somewhere—whether for something spiritual or material, inside or outside your home, for relatives or for others—and someone comes and cuts short your eagerness, know that this gentleman has stepped in and is keeping you from doing what you should.
“Leave it; it can wait. It cannot be done now.” The bell rings in the morning; it is Sunday. Your duty and obligation call you to go to Church, to meet your Creator, to thank Him for the week that has passed, and to entreat Him for the new week. Then the other one steps in: “That is only the third bell ringing. Ask around.” If it is the third bell, he tells you there is no need to go any sooner. He makes you delay. If he cannot persuade you to stay away altogether, if he cannot completely prevent you from going, he tells you to postpone it. The one who steps in and tells you to delay, to remain apart from your prayer and your communion with Christ even for fifteen minutes, is that other gentleman. It is Satan, and you must ask God to keep you spiritually awake.
The greatest virtue in man is not love, as people say, or even as they claim the Gospel says when they interpret it wrongly. No; the greatest virtue is discernment. Love itself needs discernment if it is to bear good fruit. A mother loves her child, and the child asks her for a pair of scissors. If she loves the child, should she give them to him? Because she loves him, should she give them or not? The virtue of discernment steps in and says, “If you love him, you must not give them to him.” “But I love him. Let me give them to him so that he will not cry or throw a tantrum,” and so forth. No, discernment is needed here. Set Lady Love aside for a moment and bring in discernment, so that the child does not put his eyes out with the scissors. Is that not so? Here is one small example showing that discernment is greater.
So discernment is needed in every circumstance. Why is this happening to me? Why do I feel so listless? Why am I not eager to go there? Why am I not willing to do that? Why am I unwilling to make some sacrifice out of love for another person? This master craftsman with the horns and tail steps in—the spirit of idleness—and compels you, presses you, and whispers to you. He has a spray and sprays your eyes so that they cannot open. He brings dizziness, a headache, and so forth, to keep you lying down. You must immediately discern that this is his trick and say, “My God, help me.” Make the sign of the Cross at once; you will force him to flee. Then spring to your feet and run to fulfill your duty, whether spiritual or material...
...whether it concerns you or other people. A person never has the right to remain idle, either spiritually or materially. Many people treat time as though it were a wild beast. “What are you doing there?” “Oh, we are just killing time, playing a game of backgammon.” Is time a beast for you to kill? Have you nothing else to do? Why are you idle? Why do you not pray? Why do you not read? If you are able, why do you not go and visit someone? There is a clinic nearby, a hospital farther down, a prison over there, and a psychiatric hospital beyond it. Why do you not go? Who is preventing you? How can you remain indifferent? Why are you idle? You have no right to be idle.
You have no right. What does one of the Church’s troparia say during Great Lent? Does it not say: “Blessed, again, is the servant whom He shall find watching; but unworthy is the servant whom He shall find slothful”? This sloth, this lack of eagerness for either spiritual or material work, is the work of Satan. He suggests it and forcibly tries to impose it so that the good work will not be done. We have lost many things and missed many opportunities, both spiritual and material, because of this idleness.
He once told us: “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” If God works and Christ works, should we not work? Should we remain idle? We must not remain idle. A person must always be eager to do everything connected with his own salvation or the salvation of others. He must not shrink back or be reluctant. He must also understand that the one making it difficult for him is Satan, and he must entreat Christ to help him and free him from that snare. Idleness is an evil thing. The ancients spoke about it, and the Fathers also spoke about it.
I am speaking about the lazy—the truly, habitually lazy—whether men or women. Satan has so thoroughly entangled us that someone who works is regarded as inferior, while someone who does not work is considered superior. Look at women, or men: why do you paint your nails? To hide the rust underneath? I do not think so. It is to show that you do no manual labor. That is where it begins. The grand lady says, “I am a lady.” Now, of course, gloves have been invented.
The lady puts them on and washes the dishes. Yet the underlying attitude remains: she has her nails done, so she has no room for work and no need to work. You see young men with manicures and the like. What for? What are they going to do with them—scratch their ears or their noses? What is the point? It is to show that they are not manual laborers, not people of low standing. If a person manages to enter into this way of thinking, he will discover many faults in himself. Man was created to work. Work does not give worth to the person; the person gives worth to the work. Many women, when someone proposes a match, will sometimes ask, “What is he?” They want to know whether being seen on his arm will bring them honor.
What profession does he have? If they hear, “A carpenter or a plumber,” their faces immediately fall. They think it is the profession that makes the man. In that case, Christ, who was a carpenter, is nothing at all. He is not suitable as a bridegroom. And Paul, who made tents, is of no account either. It is the person who gives worth to the profession, not the profession that gives worth to the person. Do not find this strange. There are people in the highest social positions who are outright robbers. They should hardly even be called human beings. Draw near to them and you will be horrified. Yet Satan has managed to persuade people to think this way.
That is how the corruption we see today has come to exist.
Many people have managed to reduce their workday to five hours. What do you do with the other nineteen? Do you use them for your soul? Do you offer them in love to your suffering neighbor? There are 168 hours in a week. You work forty—or not even forty, perhaps thirty or thirty-five. Where do the rest go? How many do you offer? Why, then, do you need to live for many years? For what purpose? Do you devote those years to serving others? If you did not want simply to be idle but said, “I will save a little time so that I can accomplish something else,” I would understand. But that is not how you use it. Consider bank employees and people in other businesses.
They have even succeeded in making Saturday a day off. Does anyone go to Church? The weekend gives them forty-eight free hours—and counting from Saturday noon, about sixty hours. Does anyone go to Church? Not even one percent. This idle time is spent on sin and the destruction of the soul, and perhaps of the body as well. This web of idleness will gradually tighten until it suffocates humanity, and then we will ask for angels to come down from Heaven and work here. Make the sign of the Cross and pray that you do not become ill and have to go to a hospital where there will be no nurse. All these supporting kinds of work are honorable. Do you remember what Paul says about the things considered dishonorable?
Think of a household. Which vessels are regarded as dishonorable in a house? Those needed for the toilet and similar uses. Yet these are among the first necessities. A house might have no bread, but it will have a toilet. So the value of each thing is not determined in that way, but by its necessity and the role it fulfills. If a person reflects on how God gave these things to be used and how we actually use them, he will realize that he is not using them properly. And if he looks further to discover why, he will find that something else is influencing him. What confuses him is this spirit of idleness. Paul went so far as to say, “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.”
This does not refer to someone who cannot work, because there are people who truly cannot. There are also people who seek work and cannot find it. But if you are unwilling to work, you have no right to eat. Paul did not set an age limit; he left the statement open. Unless something happens to a person in old age—mental deterioration, paralysis, or some other condition that leaves him completely unable to offer anything—he remains useful as long as his eyes are open. He can call out when something happens. He can remind someone, “Katina, you forgot to go.” He can offer something; he can watch a child, for example. There is always something he can do, and he must feel the responsibility to do it, because if...
If he is not watchful and the spirit of idleness gains control of him, it will lead him into the spirit of meddlesomeness, because when you are not idle, you do not become meddlesome. Then it will lead him into the spirit of idle talk, because no one sits there mute; his tongue works like a typewriter. He talks about priests and bishops, about everyone from the highest official down to the last messenger. He talks about the salaries at the electric company and who knows what else. He devours everyone with his words. It all begins with the spirit of idleness. That master craftsman of idleness passes him to the next demon, saying, “You take him now.” And so the devil keeps him occupied all day long, while the Christian spends his day serving the devil.
Understand what is happening. How can you find the time to sit for three or four hours in front of that idiot box? Sometimes I call it the demon box. Tell me, how can you sit idle before it while someone humiliates you and bombards you without interruption, leaving you unable to answer back? How can you sit there so long, letting yourself become stupefied? You have the wisdom of whole ages behind you. If you select something worthwhile from it, I understand. But to sit for hours on end and swallow everything—good, insignificant, foolish, idiotic, whatever it may be—this is not right. Some powerful demon has seized you, planted you there, and keeps you idle in front of it. Many people have even been robbed from behind while watching it.
The door opened, thieves came in and took their wallets, plates, belongings, and everything else—and they remained sitting there. What is this? Is it not satanic? Is this the behavior of a rational human being? It is not.
Paul therefore says that a person who refuses to work should not eat. And, as Solomon the Wise says, man should go and learn from the ant. If you visit an anthill, you will see that young and old, male and female, are all working.
We also speak of the ant when we say, “The departed man was like an ant,” or, “The departed woman was like an ant; she was always working.” In Proverbs it says, “Go to the ant, O sluggard—you who remain idle—observe its ways, imitate them, and become wiser than it.”
Observe its path: how it goes up and down without rest or pause. You too should take care to become wiser than the ant. I do not mean that a person should exhaust himself completely through work. Everything requires moderation together with discernment. Yet I believe that many of us, influenced by this particular demon of idleness, waste many hours of each day—hours in which we could offer something, both personally and for the common good.
We are losing those hours. That is what I mean. Some people, of course, cannot offer physical labor because of bodily weakness, illness, or something similar. But they could offer something spiritually: they could make a Paraklesis, say a prayer, or offer a supplication for a young woman in the neighborhood who has taken a destructive path, for a young man nearby who is not doing well, for a married couple in danger, or even for unknown people—so many of whom are under Satan’s influence. Yet people have not truly resolved to make good use of this time. They may already have enough for themselves—perhaps even more than enough. They would neither go hungry nor lack the necessities. Even so, they do not offer their time in this way.
Do you remember what Solomon the Wise said to God? “I beg You,” he said, “protect me from two things. Do not let me become either rich or poor: rich, lest I say, ‘What does God mean to me?’; or poor, lest necessity drive me to steal. Feed me with the food sufficient for me. Give me enough—what is sufficient for my support.” He did not ask for more. When a person does not work, he will eventually be driven to steal; he will go hungry and suffer deprivation. If he refuses to work while young, he will be forced to work when old, or else he will suffer.
These words are from the Holy Spirit, given to remind us how we should conduct ourselves in this life and keep ourselves from being deceived. For Satan watches for ways to gain control of a person. Sin is an avalanche. It begins from almost nothing and grows to an immeasurable size. Fleshly sins likewise begin with a flirtation, a smile, a kiss, a caress, and end in ruin—even in the brothels of Lebanon. Why? It all began from nothing. Satan is a skilled craftsman: with one sin he immediately serves you up to the next.
Saint Basil the Great says, “Whoever sits at home during the season of sowing, while others sow, will not fill his arms with sheaves when harvest time arrives.” No one will. Since he did not sow or labor, how will he reap? Those who have toiled and worked are the ones who receive the fruits. Do you remember what Christ said? “Much was forgiven her, because she loved much.” Even in love a person must not be idle; he must compel himself to love more—not with erotic, satanic love.
That kind of love throws people from the Acropolis. We are not speaking about such love. We are speaking about the love of God, which saves. “Much was forgiven her, because she loved much.” John is called the beloved disciple. Why? Is Christ showing partiality? What about the others? Why does He love John more? Because John first loved Him more. It is not that Christ gives him His love in order to make John love Him; because John loves Him, Christ gives him His love. A person, therefore, always has some way and some place in which to work and make good use of his time. Examine yourselves, then. Are you eager for every good work, or are you idle? Do you put to work the time, the day, the full twenty-four hours that God adds to your life? Do you make use of them?
Someone says, “I am sleepy.” Then make use of your sleep; transform it. Another says, “I have insomnia.” Yes—then turn your insomnia into a vigil. Nothing needs to be wasted.
Suppose you went to sleep at eleven, and then could not fall asleep again. You have insomnia. Do not rush to take a sedative. Take your prayer rope and turn your sleeplessness into a vigil. And if you are alone at home and will not disturb anyone, get up as well. Make ten prostrations. At that very hour of the night, while others are kneeling in sin and insulting God with their hands and feet, you give thanks to Him.
Give thanks to Him and entreat Him, because the world is in a terrible state, sitting idle. If you or I die two years earlier, what reason is there for me to remain here, and what have I achieved? I could have died ten years ago, provided that I was in metanoia, having confessed and received Holy Communion. I will not die simply because someone thinks I will. Pay attention to this, then, because this temptation appears in many forms. A mother delays taking her child to Church; the devil prevents her from going. Another woman delays going to someone in pain or in need; the devil prevents her. It is the spirit of idleness that keeps a person from laboring spiritually and physically, both for himself and for others. Work need not be only one particular kind. If you cannot do one thing, do something at home. Knit. Is that shameful? I remember reading the other day about Roosevelt’s daughter—or the daughter of some other prominent person—who worked and employed others. Take the money you earn and give it where there is need.
There are so many needs. Spend a day visiting a hospital and see how many people are in need of even a single drachma. Some do not have enough for a stamp to write home to their village. Some have been in hospitals for one, two, three, or five months, while their relatives cannot afford a ticket to come and see them. These people have no money. What would five hundred drachmas mean to you? Yet we do not do this. So how can we expect to be called human beings? We are hardly worthy to be called Christians, but we are not even worthy to be called human beings. I remain idle and indifferent, saying, ‘How will I manage? I do not really need that much.’ What do you mean, you do not need to give? You will melt away here just as a candle melts. Why do you go and light that candle in Church? What does the candle do as it burns there? It offers itself at Christ’s altar and leaves nothing behind.
My dear one, you will melt away, and so will I. I have no right to remain idle. Even inside the Church, I have no right to be idle and let my nous, my spiritual intellect, wander. I must pray. The human person is both material and spiritual. If he cannot offer material help to himself and others—to his family and to the world more broadly—he can still offer something spiritually. Even if I have no sight, no hands, no hearing, nothing at all, I can still offer something. My soul can pray. I told you the other day about a woman who wrote to me and telephoned me. ‘I cannot see,’ she said. ‘And what do you want from me?’ I asked. ‘I do not yet have miraculous powers to give you new eyes. So what can be done?’ ‘That is not what I want,’ she said. ‘I want you to record the morning prayers, the Six Psalms, Compline, and the Paraklesis to our Christ on a cassette, so that I can play it and…’
‘…listen and pray along.’ Do you hear that? So I sat down and recorded the morning prayers and the Six Psalms for her. At the end, I brought it to a beautiful close with troparia to the Most Holy Theotokos and other hymns, so that she could play it and pray. I also recorded Vespers and Compline for the evening, together with other prayers from the Church, and in this way I offered something to the woman. Another woman asked for something similar. She had come to a sermon for the first time and heard that I had given an interpretation of the Fiftieth Psalm. I am telling you these things so that you may see how people think when they truly desire something. When she heard about ‘Have mercy on me, O God,’ she thought that the words themselves were recorded on the tape, so she took the first recording—there were five talks in all. But the following Thursday she returned and said to me:
‘Panagopoulos, that is not what I wanted. You did not tell me where “Have mercy on me, O God” was.’ I asked, ‘Since I gave you the first talk, do you want the next one?’ ‘No,’ she said. ‘I cannot read, and I want to learn “Have mercy on me, O God” by heart, because I have been very sinful, worse than David. I want to recite this Psalm, but I cannot read. So record the Psalm for me, and I will play it once, twice, three times, five times, ten times, a hundred times, until I learn it by heart and can say it to my God. This is the first time I have come here,’ she said. Do you hear? Especially today, there is no excuse for anyone to say, ‘I cannot; I do not know; I am incapable; I am nothing.’ Truly, you are nothing? Then why would God be crucified for you, if you are nothing? Who puts that thought into you?
It is Satan who plants that thought and tells you, ‘You are nothing. Why would God be crucified for you—a nobody, a piece of rubbish?’ But when you say this, you are not speaking with humility; you are merely using humble-sounding words. Let someone step on the sore spot of your ego, and suddenly you say, ‘Now you will see who I am! Now I will show you who I am! You do not believe me? Then I am not going!’ And so this man who lived in the desert teaches us not to let the demon of idleness take hold of us. ‘Raise us up at the time of prayer.’ You read that prayer at Compline, do you not? ‘Raise us up,’ it says, ‘in the night, when we ought to pray.’ But who will rise during the night? Who will leave the warmth of the covers and get up to pray? Yet you should know what prayer at night truly means.
Prayer at night is the greatest and most powerful prayer, the prayer that brings Heaven down to earth, as John Chrysostom says. I do not know whether you have tried it. But at that hour, in hesychia—that inner stillness—you feel that Christ is yours. ‘Now that the two of us are alone, sit and let me tell You everything. Now that I believe You are listening to me, now that You see me and have no other matters demanding my attention, listen to me as well. I entreat You for that family. I entreat You for our Church, for our language, for our homeland, for our customs, and for this, and that, and so much more. Now that the two of us are alone.’
Be assured that if you raise your hands in prayer at one in the morning, eight o’clock may find you still standing there, without ever having lowered them. But that one we know so well will not allow it. The other one, the master craftsman of evil, will not allow it, and we imagine that we have suffered some terrible loss if we pray for half an hour. But if there is gossip or some sin to discuss—if we are going to devour some widow, priest, or monk with our words—we may talk until the following evening and still not be finished. This, then, is what the Saint I mentioned teaches through the first part of his prayer. Then he comes to the second petition: ‘Do not give me a spirit of meddlesomeness’—that is, do not permit me to be consumed by improper curiosity. Such curiosity is satanic. Someone may ask, ‘Is there not also a proper curiosity, a curiosity that leads to salvation?’ To be honest, there is. What, then, is this saving curiosity? To ask: Why did God become man?
Did the Virgin remain a virgin afterward as well? How does God save and justify the sinner? These and similar questions belong to a curiosity that leads to salvation. But very few people have this good curiosity—the desire to learn, to be instructed and enlightened, and then to help someone else in danger whom Christ may place along the path of their life. Perhaps one or two percent do this. The other ninety-eight percent are curious to learn what happened with a proposed marriage, whether some woman aborted her child, what one person is doing with another, and other such things. ‘Any news? Any news? What is the latest? Tell me something new!’
And within a single second, the news becomes old. Is that not so? ‘Buy a newspaper so that we can see the news.’ A person buys the paper, reads it, and throws it away. Then in the afternoon he looks for another edition to read the news again. He saw the morning news, and then the afternoon news—news that becomes old and useless within minutes. There is a satanic curiosity that causes harm. A person should be wholly dedicated to God and free from this curiosity. If God wishes to enlighten him about something and make something known to him, He will. ‘But are you not interested?’ No, I am not. ‘Are you not human? Should you not know?’ I do not need to know that. I need to learn what is right; I need not learn what is superfluous. You may learn the superfluous things if you wish, but they would steal my time.
During the hour or two I would spend listening to you tell me all the neighborhood news—even while I am carrying baskets, or, in the villages, bearing a wineskin or a water jar upon my head—I could instead say the Jesus Prayer. That is far more precious than your news. Yet curiosity consumes us. What can be done? And you know, a curious person sees along a crooked path. I do not know whether you follow what I mean. You see directly what is before you, but many times you also claim to see what you cannot see. ‘You think you can fool me? They are there right now, talking. One says one thing, and the other adds to it. I am telling you, I am practically there; it is as though I can see them.’ How can you see them? The devil lifts you up and carries you there.
It is not an angel who takes you there. You have no need to know. It is the other one who lifts you up and sends you there. And do you know what lies behind this curiosity? Envy—envy. Yes, envy is there. Someone was once asked, ‘Which eyes see best? Which eyes see the most?’
One person said prominent eyes, another sparkling eyes, another black eyes, and so on. ‘No,’ he said, ‘you have all failed.’ Then they asked an elder, ‘What do you say, Geronta?’ ‘They all spoke falsely,’ he said. ‘Envious eyes see the most.’ And that is true. This curiosity says, ‘What happened? I am waiting for you to tell me. Call me. I am curious.’
You want to hear and to know. But how will you be benefited by other people’s affairs? ‘I am curious to know what impression I made—what people thought of my talk, my letter, my clothes, my suit, my dancing, or the meal I gave. I want you to tell me; I am waiting.’ If you were curious to know what Christ is saying about you at this very moment, that would be good. But you do not ask that, because your knees would give way if you learned what Christ is saying about you and me at this very hour. His judgment is the one that carries weight. Every other opinion that merely satisfies our curiosity is worthless. This is deadly. How many people strain their ears or press them against the wall to listen?
Do people not try to eavesdrop on telephone calls? How many peer through keyholes, from windows and balconies, merely out of curiosity, to see how others move, what they intend, what is happening, and what is taking place next door? What are you trying to satisfy? Your curiosity. Does it come from God? No. It comes from Satan, and you are laboring for Satan. There is a particular demon that creates this appetite for meddlesome curiosity. Take care not to be curious. ‘But read this.’ I do not want to read it. ‘Do you not care?’ No, I do not. Those are other people’s affairs. I have affairs of my own that I must examine, learn about, and ask questions about. Leave other matters alone. Leave to your neighbor what belongs to your neighbor, to the woman next door what belongs to her, to the clergy what belongs to the clergy,
and to the government what belongs to the government. Dig within, O man—within yourself. Look at yourself. Attend to your own inner household. I am not talking about dishes and brooms. Search within and find what is yours. Be curious to discover whether you have left anything unresolved or unconfessed, whether you are living rightly before God, and whether He approves of your way of life, your words, your conduct, your works of charity, and your prayer. Be curious about these things. Indeed, with fear, ask Christ: ‘My Christ, what do You say about all this? Am I mistaken? If I am, I entreat You, help me find the right path.’
My dear ones, these most beautiful words of our Church remain empty words. Yet at every moment—while selling, counting, walking, traveling, or wherever he may be—a person can be occupied by this good curiosity: ‘What is Christ saying about me right now? How does He regard me? Is He still showing patient endurance toward me? Will He continue to wait for me? What have I done? Have I repaid anything? Have I put anything in order? People say that I do good. Many thank me and kiss my hand as though I were their benefactor. They regard me as a shining light. But I wonder—this is what I desire to know—my Christ, what do You say? My Most Holy Theotokos, what do you say? My Saint, whose name I bear, what do you say? How do you regard me?’ This is good curiosity: the desire to learn where you stand and what is happening
around your immortal soul. But learning what happened in the neighborhood, what happened with an engagement, why a certain man went to a widow’s house, why the widow went somewhere else, what another person did, what some priest did—these things do not edify you. They tear down and put immortal souls to death, my dear ones. I would therefore like us to pay close attention here, because the one vice creates room for the other. A person who scarcely has time to wash the dishes, care for the children, go to Church, and fulfill the rest of his duties has no time for meddlesome curiosity—no time to find out what happened in the neighborhood, who passed by tonight, who went out late, and who went out early. He has no time for that curiosity. Nor does he have time to read those pages of Satan
that today are called newspapers, thereby corrupting his inner world and unknowingly joining in the slander of others. These papers present slander with an appearance of truth, especially slander against the Church and against honorable, moral people, merely so that certain people may profit. Do not indulge such curiosity. Have the good kind of curiosity instead, and let this question continually press upon your heart: What is your standing before Christ? The third petition asks that He not give us a spirit of lust for power.
Lust for power. I once met a young girl—I do not know whether she belongs to your group here or to another one, probably the group at the Three Hierarchs here. “Mr. Panagopoulos, I want to become an abbess.”
She wanted to become a nun, and she wanted to become an abbess straightaway. That is the problem of lust for power. When a person takes authority over others, he exposes his head. Is that not so? Tell me, please: if you go to war, do you go out in front? No, you stay back and hide behind the rocks! Is this not also a war? Do you not know that? Here, even if it is not a Turkish bullet, it will be a demonic bullet fired at you the moment you raise your head and say, “I.”
Protestantism is divided into three hundred and fifty pieces because each person said, “I interpret it, not you.” “I,” says the next man; “I,” says the man beyond him; “I,” says another. What does the Orthodox Christian say? “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers”—I understand it as my Fathers, my Holy Fathers, interpreted it. But the other says, “I—above dogmas, above councils, above the God-bearing Fathers—I.” This is lust for power: this desire for authority, this raising of one’s head above the rest. That is why Protestantism has come to such a sorry state and has filled Hell. But Hell stretches like rubber; it expands and takes still more people in. And unfortunately, it will take us all in as well—though, of course, that depends on us. You who seek to live spiritually must never desire authority.
All spiritual people were brought into positions of prominence only under great pressure. They all fled; they ran away when they were about to be made priests, bishops, and so forth. They did not want such a thing. It is a grave matter: from the moment you rise above others as their leader, they all hang from your neck like pendants, and you will give an account to God for every one of them. Whether you are a teacher, a mayor, a director, the head of a household, or whatever else you may be, you will be called to account for all of them. Do not seek such authority, and beware of people who carry this “I” within themselves and have this—how can I put it? I do not know how to say it; I have no word for it—this desire to rule over others. “I will direct you. I will govern you. I.”
Do not give such a person that right; do not give it to him. Look around you, and if someone else is worthy, give him your vote. Raise that person up so that he may do whatever good he is able to do. Lust for power is a very serious matter. Be humble and lowly-minded. Satan, this is what you wanted to do: to set your throne above the throne of God, and you found yourself in the deepest depths of Hades. Let us pray to the Holy God that, from now on at least, He will not give us over to the spirits of idleness, idle talk, meddlesomeness, and lust for power. God willing, we shall continue next time.

Σηκωθείτε πρωί-πρωί και πάρτε την πρώτη συγκοινωνία να κατεβείτε στη δουλειά σας. Θα δείτε μία τάξη ανθρώπων η οποία περνά από κάποια εκκλησία, κάνει ένα σταυρό κλπ. Αν έπειτα, κατά τις 10-11, κατεβείτε, θα δείτε μια άλλη τάξη ανθρώπων που κατεβαίνει για τις βιτρίνες, για ψώνια κλπ. Εάν κατά τις 9, 10, 11 το βράδυ βγείτε έξω, θα δείτε ότι κυκλοφορεί μια άλλη τάξη ανθρώπων, που γυρίζει στα ξημερώματα για να κοιμηθεί, την οποία δεν την έχετε δει ποτέ. Τη βλέπετε μόνο νύχτα. Την ημέρα κοιμούνται μέχρι τις 2 η ώρα, μία, τρώνε και ξανά, για να ξαναείναι τη νύχτα. Βρείτε μου τώρα ποιοι είναι με τον Θεό. Ποιοι εφαρμόζουν το ωράριο του Θεού;
οι οποίες έχουν επιτύχει και το Σάββατο αργία. Πάει κανένας στην εκκλησία; Σαββατοκύριακο, 48 ώρες ελεύθερες, και από το Σάββατο το μεσημέρι πάμε 60 ώρες. Πάει κανείς στην εκκλησία; Ούτε ένα τις εκατό. Διατίθεται αυτός ο χρόνος ο αργός για αμαρτία και καταστροφή ψυχική, να μην πω και σωματική. Το πλέγμα, λοιπόν, αυτό της αργίας θα έρθει σιγά-σιγά, σιγά-σιγά, να καταπνίξει την ανθρωπότητα και θα ζητήσουμε αγγέλους από τον Ουρανό να έρχονται να εργάζονται εδώ πέρα. Κάντε τον σταυρό σας να μην αρρωστήσετε και πάτε σε νοσοκομεία και δεν θα υπάρχει νοσοκόμα. Όλες οι βοηθητικές εργασίες, που είναι τιμητικές. Είδατε τι λέει ο Παύλος για τα άτιμα;
Γκρεμίζει τους ανθρώπους απ’ την Ακρόπολη. Δεν μιλάμε για τέτοια αγάπη. Μιλούμε για αγάπη Θεού που σώζει. «Εδόθη πολύ, διότι ηγάπησε πολύ». Για τον Ιωάννη τον λέγει ηγαπημένον μαθητή. Γιατί; Είσαι προσωπολήπτης; Οι άλλοι τι είναι; Γιατί αυτόν τον αγαπάς περισσότερο; Διότι πρώτος αυτός αγάπησε περισσότερο. Γιατί δίδεις του Υιό για να σ’ αγαπάει; Όχι. Διότι με αγαπάει, δίδω του Υιό. Ο άνθρωπος, λοιπόν, πάντοτε έχει τρόπο και μέρος να εργαστεί και να προλάβει. Εξετάσετε, λοιπόν, τον εαυτό σας. Είσαστε πρόθυμοι για κάθε καλό ή αργοί; Εργάζεστε την ώρα σας, την ημέρα σας, το εικοσιτετράωρό σας που σας προσθέτει ο Θεός; Το εργάζεστε;
«Παναγόπουλε, δεν ήθελα», λέει, «αυτό εγώ, γιατί χαίρεται για το “Ελέησόν με ο Θεός”, δεν μου είπατε». «Όσα σας έδωσα την πρώτη, να πάρω τη συνέχεια;» «Όχι», μου λέει, «εγώ δεν ξέρω γράμματα και θέλω να μάθω απ’ έξω το “Ελέησόν με ο Θεός”, γιατί εγώ υπήρξα πολύ αμαρτωλός, χειρότερος από τον Δαβίδ, και θέλω να τον λέγω αυτόν τον ψαλμό και δεν ξέρω γράμματα. Μου γράψετε, λοιπόν, τον ψαλμό και θα τον βάλω στο μαγνητόφωνο μία, δύο, τρεις, πέντε, δέκα, εκατό, να τον μάθω απ’ έξω για να τον λέω στον Θεό μου. Πρώτη φορά ήρθα εδώ πέρα», λέει. Ακούτε; Δεν υπάρχει περιθώριο σήμερα, κατ’ εξοχήν, να πει «εγώ δεν μπορώ, εγώ δεν ξέρω, εγώ δεν δύναμαι, εγώ δεν είμαι τίποτα». Σοβαρά, δεν είσαι τίποτα; Και πώς θα σταυρωθεί ο Θεός για σένα, το τίποτα; Ποιος το βάζει;
Έχε εμπιστοσύνη ότι, αν σηκώσεις τα χέρια σου στη μία, θα σε βρουν οι οχτώ το πρωί και δεν θα τα ξανακατεβάσεις. Αλλά δεν αφήνει ο λεγάμενος. Δεν αφήνει ο άλλος, ο αρχιμάστορας, και νομίζουμε ότι χαθήκαμε αν προσευχηθούμε μισή ώρα. Αν πρόκειται για κάνα κουτσομπολιό, για καμιά αμαρτία, να φάμε καμιά χήρα, κανένα παπά, κανένα καλόγερο, ίσως να μιλούμε μέχρι την άλλη μέρα το βράδυ, να μην έχουμε τελειώσει. Αυτό διδάσκει, λοιπόν, διά του ενός μέρους ο Άγιος αυτός που σας είπα. Έπειτα έρχεται στο δεύτερο: «Πνεύμα περιεργίας μη μοι δως», μη επιτρέψεις δηλαδή να έχω περιέργεια. Η περιέργεια είναι σατανική. Θα πει κανείς: «Δεν υπάρχει και σωστή περιέργεια, σωτήριος περιέργεια;» Υπάρχει, να είμεθα ειλικρινείς. Όμως αυτή την περιέργεια τη σωτήριο, γιατί το λέει έτσι; Γιατί ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος;
