Summary

The lecture identifies Old Testament figures of the Theotokos, especially the burning bush and the fiery furnace, which symbolize her bearing divine fire without being consumed. David’s anointing teaches that God judges the hidden heart rather than outward appearance, reputation, status, or worldly success. Genuine healing requires both confessing past sins and abandoning them, so that the faithful may receive Holy Communion and seek the Theotokos’ intercession with cleansed hearts.

Continuing these brief evening talks, we might say something about the types of the Theotokos. I do not know whether you have ever considered or noticed that Christ has certain types in the Old Testament, as does the Holy Spirit. The honorable Forerunner also has prophecies about him—two, in fact—as do the precious Cross and the Most Holy Theotokos. Indeed, both in the Small Canon and in the Great Paraklesis that we heard this evening, we heard many types of the Theotokos.

In this sense, we know her beforehand—that is, we know of her before she comes into being. The culmination of the types, symbols, and prophecies concerning the Most Holy Theotokos is found in the Akathist Hymn. There, all the prophecies, all the types, and all the symbols that speak of the Theotokos have been gathered together. One that is still fresh in our minds is what we heard just now, before “It Is Truly Meet,” when the hymnographer greets the Theotokos: “Rejoice, fiery throne of the Lord.” This takes us back to the bush that burned without being consumed.

Moses saw a bush that was burning yet was not consumed. Or think of the place where the three youths were cast into the furnace: the furnace burned, but the youths were not consumed. In the same way, today the hymn presents her as a throne that gives forth fire. That fire, of course, is the fire of the Godhead. The Godhead does not consume the human person; it consumes sin. Here, then, the Theotokos is presented as a fiery throne of the Lord, because from her Christ comes into the world, the “consuming fire,” as Holy Scripture says in the Old Testament. Then the hymn sees her as the divine jar that held the manna.

“Rejoice, divine jar that held the manna.” Have you ever reflected on this type? From our school days we know of this jar containing the manna. The hymn calls her the one who held the manna. What was that jar in the time of Moses, what did it contain, and what is the jar of Christ, and what did it offer? The first jar contained the manna that God sent down. You will remember that, while the people journeyed for forty years from Egypt through the wilderness, they neither sowed nor cultivated the ground. Every day God sent down from heaven the food they needed. They had no houses, but a cloud sheltered them from the intense heat; nor did they have lights.

A cloud gave them light. Their clothes did not wear out, nor did their shoes develop holes, for forty whole years. Among the other commandments God had given concerning the manna were these: every person was to rise each morning and gather it. Outside, it lay upon the ground like snow.

It was fine, like the mineral salts of the earth, or like trahanas, we might say. They gathered an amount proportionate to the number of people in the household. If there were five people, they gathered five portions. If each portion was two kilos, they gathered ten. There was a fixed measure by which they determined how much to gather. They were forbidden to gather manna for the following day.

Out of fear, mistrust, or unbelief—wondering whether God might not send it down the next day—they would gather today for tomorrow as well. But it bred worms and spoiled. Through this, God wanted to train them to trust in Him. It is what the prayer says: “Give us this day.” Tomorrow I will provide for you again.

He permitted them to gather two portions only on Friday, because no manna fell on the Sabbath. This is very instructive and vividly expressed. No manna fell on the Sabbath; in other words, heaven did not work. It observed a day of rest. For us today, of course, Sunday is that day of rest.

This is especially significant for those people who—

under the pretext of necessity, or because of little faith or ignorance—violate the sanctity of Sunday. Sunday is a day of rest for heaven, and all the more so for the earth. Yet many people, I say, violate it. And what do they do? They contaminate, poison, and spoil all the fruit of the week’s labor. For whatever a person gathers or saves on Sunday through transgression does nothing but poison the labor of the entire week. Sadly, he does not understand this. What was he meant to understand from the manna? The manna at that time was like semolina. God told them to make it into a round loaf, like the bread we make on Clean Monday.

In this way they were fed for forty whole years. When they entered the Promised Land, the manna ceased to fall. This is also a type—a foreshadowing—of the body and blood of Christ. We too must be fed by this manna continually, and we shall cease to be fed by it when we enter the Kingdom of Heaven, when we pass into the Promised Land.

So, among all the commandments, God gave Moses this instruction: “Take some of this manna and place it in a jar. Seal it and put it inside the Tabernacle of Testimony.” This is why, when the ancestors of God brought the three-year-old Theotokos into the Tabernacle, into the Holy of Holies, all the other types that spoke of her were already there. There was Aaron’s rod that had blossomed, a type of the Most Holy Theotokos—a staff blossoms, and behold, a Virgin gives birth. There was the seven-branched lampstand, also a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. There were the tablets of Moses, which bore the Word of God, just as she would receive the Word of God incarnate. As I say, all the types were there within, speaking of her. The jar of manna was there as well. The manna was not produced by branches or by the earth; heaven sent it. It was spiritual food, as Paul says in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, just as the water that flowed from the rock was spiritual drink.

Moses struck the rock with his staff, and spiritual drink came forth; the Spirit brought it forth. Stones do not produce water, yet by a miracle they gave water. The manna, then, was spiritual food, and it now presents us with a type.

You see this jar fashioned by God, containing heavenly manna. In the same way, when you later behold the Theotokos—a woman, a maiden fashioned by God—she will contain the heavenly manna. The manna of the Old Testament was needed to feed the faithful for forty years, so that they might reach the Promised Land. In the same way, the heavenly manna brought by the Most Holy Theotokos—Christ Himself—must be eaten and received in Holy Communion for as many years as people live here, until they pass into the Promised Land. And so the hymn presents her and says: “You are the jar that held the manna; you are she who contained the manna.” “Your fathers ate in the wilderness,” as Christ Himself says in the sixth chapter of John. In precisely the same way, you will now bring the heavenly manna, the body and blood of Christ.

Through it, people will live eternally, until they pass into the Promised Land. The hymn also calls her the golden lampstand. In Holy Scripture it is also called the seven-branched lampstand, because she bore Christ, who brought the seven Mysteries, which are the light, rebirth, and salvation of mankind. Indeed, the hymn calls her unquenchable. Every lamp is lit and then goes out and is consumed. The Theotokos, however, will never be extinguished, from this time forth and unto the ages; and this is true. She lived, and she passed into eternity. The proof is that she was translated bodily. These, of course, are matters to be discussed on the days appointed for them.

The striking proof that she lives in eternity is that she did not simply die, but was translated. Thank you. She stands at the right hand of the Lord, just as our Church declares when, at the Prothesis, the priest or bishop removes her portion and says: “The Queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in a garment woven with gold and arrayed in many colors.” This is a prophecy of David, uttered around 1050 BC, which spoke of the translation of the Theotokos. She is therefore an unquenchable lamp, because the light of this lamp is always Christ. Is there any end to the light of Christ? She is like the ever-burning lamp on the Holy Altar, a type of the light we receive at the Resurrection: “Come, receive light from the Light that knows no evening”—from Christ, who lives and shines both here, beyond the grave, and throughout eternity. This is why the hymn describes her and says that you are—

on the one hand, a lampstand, and on the other, an unquenchable lamp. It also greets her as “the glory of virgins.” “I behold a strange and wondrous Mystery,” says the hymnographer concerning the virginity of the Theotokos. Our Christ, who is the salvation of mankind, “was born of a Virgin.” Many are scandalized by this. But if a person follows the account of the Fall, he will see why Christ had to be born of a Virgin. If he considers how mankind was cast down, he will discover—

how mankind was restored. And if he considers how death entered the world, he will see why it was right for life to enter the world in this same way. Adam and Eve brought mankind down; the New Adam, Christ, and the New Eve, the Theotokos, restored it. The first disobeyed, while the second obeyed—even unto the Cross. Can you tell me when Eve committed the sin? Was she a virgin or not? While still a virgin, Eve conceived through the evil one and gave birth to death. Correspondingly, while still a Virgin, Mary conceived through the Good One and gave birth to life.

The Resurrection had to come about in precisely the same manner as the Fall. This is exactly why Christ was born of a Virgin: because death had come through a virgin. If you read Holy Scripture, in Genesis, where the events of the Fall are recorded, you will find that the Fall took place first. Only after the Fall, when they had been driven out, did “Adam know his wife,” and she gave birth to Cain, Abel, and the others—about sixty children—outside Paradise. Consequently, it was a virgin who received the message from Beelzebub, and death came into being. The Theotokos, also a Virgin, received the message not from the fallen chief, but from the chief of the heavenly hosts, as our Church so beautifully says.

“The chief of the angelic hosts was sent from heaven to say ‘Rejoice’ to the Theotokos”—not a fallen angel; this is deliberately contrasted with the one who fell away. “Hearken, O daughter, and see.” Listen to what I shall tell you; look at the scepter I hold, see who sends me and where I come from. I come from the royal palace: I “was sent from heaven,” not from the earth, as Satan was. It was therefore fitting that the Pure One should be born of a Virgin. This is why the iconostasis is fragrant with virginity: the Theotokos is a Virgin, Jesus is a Virgin, the honorable Forerunner is a virgin, and Saint Paraskevi is a virgin. Someone may ask, then, “Is marriage a sin?” “Marriage is honorable,” says John Chrysostom, “though it is not holy.” But he goes on to say—

And so that the hymnographer may not slight mothers either, he says: “Rejoice, glory of virgins, adornment and honor of mothers.” A mother is indeed an adornment and an honor if she is a virgin before marriage and bears children after marriage. But if she was dishonorable before marriage and does not live chastely after marriage, she cannot claim these honors. The Theotokos, then, is not merely someone of passing importance. She stands after God; and just as far as the human person can search into and marvel at the things of God, so too should he search into and marvel at the Most Holy Theotokos. These days are days in which both groups—the virgin mentioned here...

...and the married, the mothers mentioned there, and parents—must observe the appointed days. Virgins soar through the heavens; fornicators, adulterers, and those living lawlessly are beneath the earth; and married people voyage upon the sea. Yet those who are married, who have received the blessing to become fellow workers with God and to be an adornment and an honor, as the hymn says, must also observe the appointed days: the great feast days and the fasts. They must create little islands, leaving the voyage for a time and going ashore upon the barren islands of fasting and self-restraint on the days set apart by the Church: Wednesday, Friday, and the weekend, as well as the fasts and feasts. They create islands of refuge. I am not speaking of fornicators or adulterers, who travel beneath the earth, down there like rats, crouched low in their boat and wallowing in the dirt. Nor am I speaking of those who fly on high, the virgins. I am speaking of the middle way, Holy Matrimony, and how it too must create islands of self-restraint, as the Church directs, so that Holy Matrimony may also be an adornment and an honor. Nor is it enough merely to preserve our virginity while at the same time being blasphemers, liars, and people who neither confess nor receive Holy Communion. All these things are necessary, because otherwise...

...we are like people preserving a few columns from a great palace that has collapsed. Do you see these columns here? Yes, I see them—but I do not see the palace. The column of virginity remains, while the entire rest of the palace lies in ruins. Therefore, virginity requires self-restraint, but it must also be adorned with all the other virtues, so that it may be fragrant in the sight of God. One particular Father of the Church, Saint Isidore of Pelusium, says that virginity is for Heaven, Holy Matrimony for earth, and fornication for Hades. As far as Heaven is from earth, so far is virginity from Holy Matrimony.

A person will bring forth thirtyfold fruit, provided that the union is honorable and not between relatives. Incest and similar sins have multiplied in our days—and without metanoia, without repentance. It must also be open to the bearing of children, rather than setting boundaries for God: “I will decide; I will decide whether You may be my partner.” In your little faith and unbelief, you have no right to bar from entering the world an inventor, a saint, or some great human being. If we too wish to receive the blessings spoken of here concerning the Most Holy Theotokos, both perpetual virginity and married life must conform to the law of God, as we are taught especially in the blessing of Holy Matrimony. The Theotokos, then, is not merely one person, someone whom history briefly noticed. All the types—and I dare say that, if they were counted, those concerning the Most Holy Mother would be found to outnumber even those concerning Christ...

This presents her, as far as possible, as having the power after God to speak to God and to obtain whatever she asks—provided, of course, that we have not bound her hands, but are living in metanoia, repentance, in confession, and in Holy Communion. When our sins are blotted out, the dividing wall is torn down, and she has boldness to speak to her Son. Let us stop here on this first evening and receive at least a little of what she teaches us. Let us now consider the difference between God’s judgment and the way people see things. There was a place to which Samuel was once sent to anoint a king.

He was sent to a household, to choose from among its sons.

And He told him: “Put oil into the horn—a sheep’s horn. Its back end is hollow. Pour oil into it, and with it anoint as king the man whom I shall show you.” So Samuel went to that house, whose father was Jesse.

Jesse naturally regarded it as a great honor that the king would come from his household, and he brought forward, one by one, the young men in his house. First he brought the son he thought was handsome, well-mannered, impressive in stature, and suitable to be king. But the Holy Spirit said nothing to Samuel about anointing him. So Samuel asked, “Is there another child?” Jesse answered, “There is this one.” Then another was brought in. He was not the one either. “Do you have another?” Another came, and then a third. All seven sons who were at home passed before him.

God did not indicate that any of them should be anointed king, and Samuel found himself in a difficult position. Then God told him that God does not see as people see. People look at the outward appearance, but God looks within, at the human heart. He does not look at appearances; He looks at the heart. “Do you have another child?” Samuel asked. “I have one more,” Jesse replied, “but it cannot be him. We use him as a shepherd.” In our own language, we might say he was considered the least successful of them all. “We keep him with the sheep. It cannot be him.”

Samuel said, “I cannot even sit down to eat the meal set before me until I have completed the work I came to do. Please send for the shepherd and have him come here.” David was that shepherd. So they sent word to him. Poor David arrived with his cracked heels, probably carrying his rough cloak and little bag, with his shepherd’s staff in hand—sunburned and weather-beaten from living outdoors. He entered among all the others, who stood there finely dressed and carefully groomed. The moment he came in, the Holy Spirit told Samuel, “This is the one whom you shall anoint king.”

He had asked them to summon the shepherd, who was to receive the kingdom. Elsewhere the sacred writer states it very clearly: “His eyes”—that is, his eyes were flashing with fire—and God anointed him king. When a person reads this, he truly trembles, if he has even a little understanding of what is happening. If he is successful and thinks highly of his own respectability, of what the world says about him, and of who is held up as the model, he must remember that what lies within is what matters. If he has even a little fear of God, he should draw inward like a crab and say, “My God, You see my heart at this very moment. You do not look at what the world says about me or what the world takes me to be. What, then, do You say about me?”

A person should indeed be afraid. God sees in one way, and people in another. People see respectable householders, savers, those who are successful by worldly standards, influential people, merchants, scholars, and those whom we call distinguished. Such things do not impress Christ. He may not reject them, but they carry little weight; and if there is no substance within, if there is no heart, He casts them aside. God does not give His approval, whatever the world may say. Let us turn now to another passage of the Old Testament, in the fifth chapter of the Book of Kings.

It speaks of a great Syrian commander, a prominent man who had rendered outstanding service to his country, known as Naaman the Syrian. The passage describes all he had accomplished, all his honors and decorations, and then adds, as though in parentheses: “but he was a leper.” Two words. This great and capable man, whom everyone respected and almost venerated because of the services he had rendered his country, was nevertheless a leper. His wife would not approach him. His children would not approach him. He was a leper.

Have you ever seen a leper? Have you never read about leprosy? Read the Old Testament, in Leviticus, and you will see leprosy as a type of sin. There you will see that, while physicians dealt with every other disease, leprosy was entrusted to the clergy, because leprosy is a type of sin. Leprosy was never healed except miraculously. Even today, with the modern medicines that have been developed, doctors can render a patient noninfectious, so that a leper can move among others without transmitting the disease; yet despite scientific progress, the leper is not truly cured. The commander, then, was a leper. What use were his insignia of rank? What use were his medals?

What use was all your glory? You are a leper. In the same way, many of the faithful are lepers in the sight of God. If I am a leper in God’s sight, what does it matter what the world says I am? What does it matter what people say about me, or even what I may outwardly be? If I am a leper, that is a grave matter. And during these great and holy days it becomes graver still, because three or four times a year our spiritual condition is brought into sharper relief: at Pascha, for example, at Christmas, at the Annunciation, and now during the Dormition Fast. At such times it becomes clearer what state a person is in, what condition his soul is in, and what lies within it.

Outwardly he may merely bear the label of being someone important, while inwardly his soul is leprous. Christ is the One who sees the human heart and does not look at outward appearances. These days, then, are more radiant, and a person must watch himself all the more carefully. They move us more deeply because of the great events surrounding the great persons of our faith. At other times, as I have told you, the days concern Christ: the Crucifixion, the Nativity, and the Annunciation. Now they concern the burial of the Mother of Life, the Lady of the Angels, she who is higher than the Cherubim and Seraphim. Yet despite the solemnity of this season, most people have taken no stand in relation to it.

They measure themselves by what the world thinks of them. They measure themselves by what their relatives think of them. They measure themselves by their own opinion of themselves. But they do not ask what Christ thinks of them. What good are all these opinions, since death is something no one can resist, and everyone will die? Why does a person not care to find out? Perhaps all these outward things are well—but perhaps the soul is leprous. What stand, then, should be taken toward this condition? My beloved, no human being has ever been born, lived, and remained without sin. “There is no one who lives and does not sin.” The brief prayer says, “O Lord, You alone are without sin.” There is only One...

Christ lived without sin. All the saints, even the greatest saints, sinned; but they practiced metanoia—they repented. This is the serious point. Christ, who knows the human person inwardly and outwardly and knows how easily he sins—that is, how easily he falls—has, in His love and compassion, prepared a powerful medicine called metanoia, repentance, and confession. He has left it for us so that whenever we soil ourselves and sin, we may use this medicine. The medicine is not in Heaven; it is here on earth, and here is where we must use it.

Who is without sin? I repeat: no one. Whether in word, deed, or thought, we are sinners. Yet there is the most powerful medicine of metanoia, repentance, as Saint Isaac the Syrian says: “No one who has ever washed himself in the potent medicine of repentance and confession has been lost.” I say and insist upon both repentance and confession, because we have divided this compassionate Mystery in two. Some have turned the Mystery into repentance without confession. Others have made it confession without repentance. Few are both repentant and confessed.

A person says, “I repented. I no longer do that. I was young then; now I have stopped.” But what about confession, even to this day? What do you say about confession? You will still have to pay the debt. It is like a child going to the grocer and saying, “From today onward, my father says we will pay cash.” What will the grocer answer? “Go and tell your father to come and pay his old debts, and to stop making grand gestures about the new arrangement. Whatever he pays from now on changes nothing. He must pay what he already owes.” Many people likewise say, “I changed my way of life. That is over. I stopped doing it; I should never have done it.”

But he will have to pay for it. It is written down. The devil will bring it to light, record it in red letters, and present it at the Judgment. The one who can erase it from the devil’s record is the person himself, when he confesses it and brings it out into the open. Have you seen what people do when they want to clear a field? They bring the roots to the surface so that the sun may scorch them and they will not sprout again. The same thing happens when you bring the roots of sin to the surface: the Holy Spirit burns them away and cleanses them. Others, however, have confession but no metanoia, no repentance. “Of course, let us confess, receive the prayer of absolution, and receive Holy Communion.” The next day, they do exactly the same things. They are like frogs that come out of the pond, sit on dry land, and then—splash!—go straight back in. They do not turn away from sin; they return to the same things. Many people confess the same sins four times a year.

If a recording were made while a person was confessing, he would discover that, when he returned for confession, he said almost exactly the same things. Why? Because he had cut nothing out of his life. He went to confess and receive Holy Communion, not to change his life. So, as I say, few people truly live the Mystery of metanoia and confession. There are sins committed before Baptism, and Baptism cleanses them. Then there are sins committed after Baptism, and these are cleansed by the second baptism: metanoia and confession. Yet there are people who have not confessed for many years. They light candles, come to Church, celebrate Pascha and Christmas, attend the feasts of the Most Holy Theotokos, and perhaps even receive Holy Communion.

But tell them to confess—let alone to change their lives and wipe away the old debts—and they refuse. They preserve their sins as though they were foreign currency which, when exchanged, would gain them Paradise, although even a single sin can be enough to lead a person into Hell. I say, then, that during these days above all—days so radiant and fervent, which invite most of us and draw us closer to the Church and especially to Holy Communion—we must take this very seriously. Let us not concern ourselves with what we put on outwardly. Christ is not concerned with outward appearances; Christ is concerned with what is within. He does not want a person naked or filthy, but above all He looks first upon the state of his soul. For at Pascha we ourselves say to Him:

“I behold Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter. Make radiant the garment of my soul.” Yet we do not act accordingly; we mock Him. Although we ask Him to make the garment of our soul radiant, we know how it is made radiant, and still we do not do what is required. Of course, we human beings may perform one good deed in order to cancel out an evil one. No—do not be deceived. Sins are not erased by good deeds; they are forgiven when there is metanoia, repentance. Allow me to share with you some sayings of the Saints concerning this spirit. Saint Basil the Great, for example, says to us, “Weep before the appointed time,” so that you will not have to weep there. Weep now, he says, and repent of your sins.

Otherwise, you will weep there for all eternity. “Repent now,” he says, “while it is still possible.” Repent now, while you can, while you have the opportunity. “Do not expect to repent of your sins then, when repentance is no longer possible.” And this is true. A person sins with his body, but then leaves his body in the grave. Even if he repents there, wherever he may go, he will no longer be able to perform deeds worthy of repentance. He must repent here. With this body he must confess; with this flesh he must repay what he owes, return what he has stolen or unjustly taken, and ask forgiveness from the person he has harmed, because it was with this flesh that he committed the sin.

For God has appointed this life as the place of action. Here, He says, you will act and speak. There is the examination of what has already been done. You will go there to give an account, not to work out your salvation. You will be brought to judgment, and Satan will appear with all his records, presenting every detail of what we committed—by night and by day, in secret and openly. People sin, and because Christ does not immediately cast down fire in punishment, they imagine either that He does not exist or that He has no power. For many years He shows patient endurance toward a person’s sins and waits for him. And an ascetic asks, “When people sin, does God perhaps not know?”

God does not intervene immediately, he says, but gives the sinner time for repentance. Because sin has become habitual and must be corrected, He grants him one year, two, three, five, ten, even a hundred years, so that he may repent and return. But the sinner imagines that God does not know, or that his sins have grown old and God no longer remembers them. This is why God shows such patient endurance toward man. According to John Chrysostom, “Metanoia is the gateway to the Kingdom of Heaven, the entrance into Paradise, and the enjoyment of eternal delight.” No one who truly repented was ever lost. Do not say that someone repented there, because he ought to have repented here. So many have spent eternity repenting there because they refused the easy repentance offered here. What a tragedy.

To wipe away everlasting evils through one sincere repentance and one confession—and yet he did not do it! “Wherever the spirit of repentance enters, it is evident that every sin is destroyed and the proud demons are overthrown. There is no other medicine like continual katanyxis, compunction, and the unceasing accusation of one’s own sins, for undoing what has been done through confessing it.” So let us not concern ourselves, I repeat, with what we are outwardly, what we appear to be to others, or even what we imagine ourselves to be.

What are we like in our soul? What is written in the ledgers of our sins? What is our true condition? This is what we must examine—not only in ourselves, but also in our son, our wife, our husband, our father, and our brother.

But no! Our first concern is outward appearances: whether they have succeeded, whether they went abroad and brought back dollars, whether they managed to build apartment blocks, whether they own a private car or even a private airplane. These things are laughable. How much filth might there be in that person’s soul? What are they like within, and what sort of Christian are they? So, as I bring these few words this evening to a close, I would like to remind you: let us make good use of these holy days. Let us humble ourselves, confess to a priest, put our lives in order, and in a few days approach our Lady, the Most Holy Theotokos, so that we may receive her grace and blessing. And let us be certain that she will be waiting for us above—provided that we go there cleansed of sin. Thank you for this as well.

Έχετε ιδεί ποτέ λεπρόν; Δεν έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ περί λεπρού; Η Παλαιά Διαθήκη, στο Λευιτικό, να ιδείτε τη λέπρα σαν τύπο της αμαρτίας. Εκεί να δείτε πως ο Θεός, ενώ όλες τις αρρώστιες τις είχαν αναλάβει οι ιατροί, τη λέπρα την είχαν οι κληρικοί, γιατί η λέπρα είναι τύπος της αμαρτίας. Και ουδέποτε θεραπεύθηκε λέπρα, ει μη θαυματουργικώς. Και σήμερα ακόμα, με τα σύγχρονα φάρμακα που έχουν εφευρεθεί, δημιουργούν αρνητικούς, μπορεί να κυκλοφορήσει ένας λεπρός χωρίς να μεταδώσει το νόσημά του, όμως δεν θεραπεύεται ο λεπρός, παρόλη την πρόοδον της επιστήμης. Λεπρός λοιπόν ο στρατηγός. Τι να σας κάνω τα γαλόνια; Τι να σας κάνω τα παράσημα;
