Summary

The Small and Great Paraklesis gather the whole human struggle into prayers for healing, protection, and the intercession of the Theotokos. Christ’s Crucifixion restores communion between God and humanity, yet each person must freely remove the barrier of sin through repentance. The lecture urges believers to combine devotion to the Theotokos with confession, Holy Communion, spiritual discernment, and obedient attention to Christ’s word.

In the evening, the Church has appointed the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, except, of course, on those days when it is not celebrated because Vespers is served. The Church has two Paraklesis services to the Most Holy Theotokos, besides the so-called Akathist Hymn, which is chanted on the Fridays of Great Lent. They are what we call the Great Paraklesis and the Small Paraklesis. The papers here tell us that the poetry—that is, the composition—of the Small Paraklesis, which we celebrated this evening, is attributed to a monk named Theosteriktos. Others say that it is by Theophanes.

Our concern is not who wrote it. What matters is that what they wrote fits our condition perfectly. These Paraklesis services, both the Small and the Great, contain our whole life within them. If someone sits down not merely to chant them, but to examine them, read them, and take them into his heart, he will see that everything is written for each and every one of us. Yet, sadly, people do not feel their need for them, and that is why, as you see, they do not come. After the Divine Economy of the Incarnation, there is no greater event than the Most Holy Theotokos. And we shall encounter this truth again on that day, when...

we see Christ at the Judgment, seated upon the throne, with no one else taking any interest in us, and only His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, at His right hand and the honorable Forerunner at His left. Then we shall understand what it means to say, “What a tragedy our life has been,” because we left unused these opportunities offered by the Church of Christ. Then we shall understand her worth. Then we shall understand the words, “More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim.” Then we shall understand the words, “Bearer of Christ, protecting veil and twelve-walled city.” People will understand it then, but by then it will be too late. It is better, therefore, that we should not be among those who refuse to hear about the Most Holy Theotokos.

They do not want to hear about the Most Holy Theotokos. It is true that many people do not want to hear about Christ; yet when trouble comes, they cry, “My Panagia!” And many who say they need her hold the Most Holy Theotokos in high honor while rejecting Christ. But could the Most Holy Theotokos ever have made herself independent of Christ? What can the Most Holy Theotokos do? Did you not hear that the priest presented the papers we gave him not to the Most Holy Theotokos, but to Christ? Did you not hear that? Did you not see it? He presented them to Christ. He did not present each person’s petitions to the Theotokos. We must therefore be among those described in every Paraklesis. You heard the words yourselves, and I shall repeat them to you.

As long as breath remains in us and we are able to speak, we shall never cease to cry aloud: Who could save us if you were not the healer of the sick and our intercessor? Who could deliver us from so many dangers—as individuals, as families, and as a people? Who could preserve our freedom, both bodily and spiritually? Therefore, “We shall not turn away from you, O Lady.” We shall not leave. That is how it begins. First it calls the faithful: “Let us sinners and humble ones now run earnestly to the Theotokos and fall before her, crying in metanoia from the depths of our souls: O Lady, help us.” From the very beginning, the Paraklesis to the Theotokos has as its purpose the healing...

of the human soul and body, because the human person is not only the body that we see. If the soul that sustains the body has departed, the person cannot remain alive. Each person is concerned for his own sins, yet he does not neglect the body either. That is why the petition is, “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” Have I given you the wrong impression? Its proper meaning, then, is: “Most Holy Theotokos, intercede for us.” The word “save” certainly includes deliverance from illnesses, from unforeseen events that trouble us, from wars, other diseases, earthquakes, floods, and so many other things that threaten us every day.

At the same time, it asks that our soul also be saved. The soul, of course, is saved through Jesus. The Most Holy Theotokos intercedes, and Jesus saves. The place of the Theotokos is not revealed only from the day when she came to die—the occasion for which we now celebrate fifteen Paraklesis services before her departure from this life—and through the presence she would have there, just as she had here.

The mystery of the Theotokos belongs to the mystery of Jesus and continues above as well. But that is not the only point. Her place does not begin on the day she died; it begins much earlier. The honor of the Theotokos is revealed from the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. From there we come to the Annunciation, and afterward she goes up into the hill country of Judah. That is why, this evening, in the Small Supplicatory Canon, the Church draws upon the event of her pregnancy and the way she learned of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, when the angel told her that Elizabeth, the mother of John the Forerunner, would bear a child. He told her that Elizabeth had conceived, because, judging in a human way, she could not understand how she herself could be pregnant. On Monday we shall again celebrate the Great Paraklesis. Its Gospel reading concerns the Most Holy Theotokos, and also a woman of the household; the whole substance of that Gospel is in the words, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed.” Christ’s preaching was such that it stirred the very depths of people’s hearts.

An uneducated woman from among the people who heard Him could not keep from crying out: “Blessed is the mother who bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” She said this without, of course, knowing that He was also God. If we tried to count everything written about Christ, I dare say that even more has been written about the Most Holy Theotokos. Just as in every difficult moment we cry out “Mother!” rather than “Father!”, so in such moments we cry “Panagia!” rather than “Christ!” Yet the words written here must always apply: “Crying in metanoia from the depths of our souls: O Lady, help us, and have compassion on us.” In metanoia.

Metanoia is something people know very little about—not its scriptural meaning, its essence, or its theological meaning. Sin is what gives rise to metanoia. The Fall is what calls for restoration. The human person, being human, makes mistakes. That is why the Psalmist says to God in the Psalm, “We are dust”; we are made of earth—what do You expect from us? God does not demand a way of life surpassing that of the angels. He asks that when a person falls, he should rise again. If a person persists in his fall, then neither the Most Holy Theotokos nor the Lady of the Angels can help him, because Christ requires metanoia from the human person.

Remember what John the Forerunner said when he came, before Christ had yet appeared: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” And do you not remember what Christ said when He first began His public ministry? “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” Metanoia is a key in human hands, just as refusal to repent is also a key in human hands. Imagine a double-faced key, as women call it—women who do not know “Holy God” but know the term “double-faced”—a key with two sides. One side, metanoia, opens Paradise; the other, refusal to repent, opens Hell. The human person will go to Hell on his own. Christ will say that he goes “by himself,” just as a dog never goes into the sitting room but to its own enclosure, just as a dog never goes into the sitting room but to its...

kennel, and just as the sheep go to their proper place. So too the sinner—the unrepentant, egotistical, lying, dishonorable, blasphemous person, and so on—will go to Hell of his own accord. Yet Christ has made a key and given it to the human person here on earth: “Whatever you bind on earth” shall be bound, and “whatever you loose” shall be loosed. Here on earth a person’s sins are loosed or bound. We must understand that a person cannot truly stand even at this Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos while persisting in sin. Just as Pilate pointed to Christ and said, “Behold the man,” so the Most Holy Theotokos stands with her hands bound, unable to move at all to help us, although she is “our unfailing intercessor and mediator.”

“The lips of the impious, who do not venerate or honor your icon, are mute and demon-possessed.” Yet she cannot help them, because she too sees Christ’s pierced side and His pierced hands, which remind her as though He were saying, “Do you see them? This person drove the nails into Me.” How, then, can she help him? Sin is a dividing wall between the human person and God—a wall raised by the person himself, so that he can no longer communicate with God. He cries out, but cannot reach Him, because he has erected this wall within himself. Do you remember the first miracle when Christ came at last to the Cross? When Christ was being crucified on Golgotha, do you remember the first miracle? Many miracles are mentioned there. The first, it says, was...

that “the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom.” What we see today as the sanctuary—we now enter into the Holy of Holies, but at that time we could not enter. This veil signifies sin, which stood as a dividing wall between God and humanity. Christ comes and, upon the Cross, tears apart the written record of our sins, restoring communion between the human person and God. Yet the human person deliberately puts up another screen and says to Him, “My God, I do not want to hear You or see You.” Unless the person himself removes this sin, it is impossible for him to communicate with God. Many times we urgently need to make a telephone call—to report a fire, to call first aid, or for some other need. We call, but there is no answer. Why?

We had not paid the bill. For example, we failed to pay it, and our telephone service was cut off. The sinner is exactly like that. With every sin he commits, he cuts off the telephone line to God. God is ready to call him at every moment. He is never away from home, so to speak. Sometimes we call people and they are not at home, or they have not put the receiver down properly, and we cannot reach them. Such things do not happen with God, with the Theotokos, or with the Saints. They are there at every moment—unless we ourselves have cut off our communication with God, as I said. There are many people whom God calls, but they do not pick up the telephone. They do not want to hear Him at all. They attribute the events through which God calls them to other causes. And God’s call takes many forms, they say.

It may be joyful, but often it is sorrowful as well, calling the human person to draw closer to Him. For all these things that we imagine to be evils are not truly evil; they help bring us toward God. There is only one true evil, and that is sin. Everything else is merely thought to be evil—whether mourning, poverty, illness, or anything else. If a person understands that he did not come into this world simply to live, but to die, and that he dies in order to live, then all this will become clear and he will understand it. If he thinks that he will remain alive here, he is deceived. God became man and died; the Theotokos, who was human, also died. Tell me, then, how are we going to escape death? It is absurd for the Queen of Heaven to be buried while you and I imagine that we shall live forever here. So, as I say, she cannot help us when sin stands in the way. What do we do? You see, we try to bargain with God. I once asked about this...

of people who had ended up in the hospital. They say, “We want the priest to come and serve Holy Unction; we want the priest so that we may make our Holy Confession; and we want the priest so that we may receive Holy Communion. If I get out—if I get out—I will do all these things.” But when you were outside the hospital, you did not do them, and now you say that you will? Are you trying to force God to release you so that you can do them? He will not help you on those terms. The whole matter remains mysterious.

The Theotokos, then, will be able to help people...

when they live according to that beautiful prophecy she uttered there in the hill country of Judah: “From this time forth all generations will call me blessed,” when she met Elizabeth. Elizabeth told her that she was pregnant. You will remember this event. The Archangel said to her, “Rejoice, you who are full of grace; the Lord is with you,” and so forth. She could not understand these words. “You will give birth,” he said, “and the Child who is born will be great.” “How shall this be, since I know no man?” I have no husband. How will this happen? What did he tell her? “Your relative, who was old, is now in her sixth month. For with God nothing will be impossible.” God is almighty and can do all things. And she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” The angel departed; the pregnancy had begun, and the conception had taken place. Now she sat alone, marveling at what had happened. “Can it be true that I have conceived?” She remembered the angel’s words: “Your relative, though old, is in her sixth month.” “I shall go up to the village.” She evidently received permission from Joseph, her betrothed, to visit her elderly cousin, and she went. As soon as the elderly Elizabeth, who had carried John for six months, saw her, she embraced her tightly.

“The mother of my Lord,” she said, “has come to me.” The mother of my Lord! Imagine a girl of fifteen hearing a woman of ninety call her “the mother of my Lord.” She marveled as the prophecy spoken to her was confirmed. I do not know how much she understood. Elizabeth said, “As soon as your greeting reached me, the child leaped for joy in my womb.” John, within his mother’s womb, jumped—he kicked, as we would say. “He leaps, he rejoices,” says the Akathist Hymn when it speaks of this very moment and of the Theotokos going up into the hill country of Judah. Elizabeth also spoke the rest of the blessings over her: “Blessed are you, because you believed that the things spoken to you would be fulfilled.” Do not reject them; all these things are possible. Then she too understood that what the angel had told her was true, and she cried aloud and began that sequence...

Then she proclaimed that series of beautiful words, beginning with, “For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed,” and continuing with the rest of the ninth ode: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” From there it begins, and all that follows speaks of the Divine Economy. So I would like to remind those who are forgetful to attend to the matter of human sin. That a person has fallen is not the serious thing. The terrible thing is that he has not risen again. Suppose, for example, that you need to go to Athens, but someone meets you traveling toward Patras. “Where are you going?” “To Athens.” “But you have reached the outskirts of Patras.” “Oh, thank you very much.” And instead of turning around toward Athens, you continue toward Patras. What would people think of such a person?

You recognize that this is a fault, that it is wrong, that it is sin, that it separates you from grace and cuts off your communion with God—and yet you continue. What should that be called? As the saying goes, “To sin is human, but to persist in sin is demonic,” whether the sin is small or great. Many people measure sins as though they had a measuring tape and say, “Oh, that is nothing.” What nonsense! Who told you that? Does a jar need more than a tiny crack for all the oil inside it to drain away? Even if the opening is no wider than the point of a needle, little by little all the oil will escape and end up on the floor. Do not let Satan deceive you into looking at the sins of others, even if they may be many. Do not let Satan deceive you by placing you among the blind so that you appear to be the one person who can see.

A person must pay attention to what he himself is. The greatest miracle that ever happened, and that continues to happen, is not what took place in Bethlehem, where God became man; nor what took place in Gethsemane; nor what took place on Golgotha. It is none of these. The greatest miracle is that God bears with us while we mock Him. That is the greatest miracle: that He bears with us while we eat and drink, enjoy the sun, and possess everything, even as we say, “I do not believe in You. I do not acknowledge You. I take everything that is Yours, but I do not want You.” How does He bear with us? How astonishing is this longsuffering! That is why the Church cries aloud, “Glory to Your longsuffering, O Lord.”

And this is true for every Judas, because, to a greater or lesser degree, we too are Judases. The iconostasis, then, which belongs entirely to God, gives the place of honor on the right to the Most Holy Theotokos, while Christ waits for people to pass through the center. The Royal Doors are for the faithful. Christ is not seated in the Royal Doors; He is on the left, and His Mother is on the right. Why? So that people may pass through and enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet people do not want to pass through. Above the Holy Table, in the apse, stands the new Eve with her arms open, in place of the old Eve. Where Eve closed Paradise through her disobedience, the new Eve has opened her arms so that people may pass upward through them.

The Most Holy Theotokos speaks to Christ; the two of them are in communion, and the faithful are led through the Royal Doors toward the Kingdom of Heaven. Metanoia—repentance—is the necessary condition for a person to reach that place and receive the Body and Blood of Christ. This will make him a man of God. It will change the blood he inherited from Adam and give him the Blood of Christ, making him by grace a child of God, a brother of Christ, and an heir of the Kingdom of Heaven. That is the reality, put simply. Therefore, these supplicatory canons will be of no benefit if there is no repentance and confession, so that the hands of the Theotokos may be set free to help us, as the hymn says: “O Lady, help me.” Help me so that I may help you. As long as you are unwilling, as long as you do not cooperate, I cannot help you. As long as you do not cease from your sin and your life does not change, I cannot help you.

“He is the One who saves; I only intercede.” Those of us who were together last night heard the first part, particularly the account of the Most Holy Theotokos going up into the hill country of Judah. That was the Gospel passage the Church used to frame what is called the Small Paraklesis Canon. Tonight the Great Paraklesis Canon, with which we are less familiar, presents another scene.

That is why it is difficult both for the chanter, unless he is practiced in it, and even for the listener. We are accustomed to the Small Paraklesis, which is served throughout the year, unlike the Great Paraklesis, which is served only now, during the Dormition fast, on alternate evenings. According to what I read here in the Great Horologion, the author of this canon is said to have been Emperor Theodore Doukas Laskaris. Last night we mentioned the author of the other canon. Tonight I would like to dwell on an important counsel for all of us,

both for those of us who say that we believe and for those who do not believe. It arises from something that happened there in the village of Martha and Mary—that is, at the house of Lazarus. These events were recounted in tonight’s Gospel reading for the Great Paraklesis. It says, “Jesus entered a certain village. And a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house.” She said, “Come in,” and opened her home to Him, as we were saying. Since she invited Him, she knew who He was. We do not know whether this happened before or after the resurrection of her brother. I prefer to believe that it happened before; I do not want to believe that it was afterward.

Her conduct would not have been right if this happened afterward. Before that event, one can understand her going back and forth like this, but afterward it would not have been right. In any case, she opened her home and received Him. She surely received Him as a teacher, as a preacher, as someone her brother revered, and as a wonderworker. Evidently she welcomed Him so that she could prepare a meal for Him and show Him hospitality in her home. But she did not receive Him in order to listen to Him, to seek His counsel, or to take anything to heart from what He said. This is a peculiar kind of person, and there are many such people today. Christ had come into the house, after all. She must have seated Him somewhere. “Where would You like to sit?” “In the reception room.” And there were other members of the household there as well.

Did Mary invite Him? No, Martha invited Him. Yet Mary was the one who benefited from the occasion. Strange indeed! “Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His word.” Did Mary regard Him merely as an important person, someone to entertain and impress, so that she could show others that she was acquainted with distinguished people, and all the usual things? Christ has no interest in any of that. Whatever others may have thought of Him, Mary chose to sit at His feet, close beside Him, and to open her ears and listen.

This went so far that Martha became irritated. At one point she came bustling in, turned upon her guest, and rebuked Him for not caring that He had become absorbed in conversation with Mary, who certainly was not behaving as Martha thought she should. He had left Martha alone to serve, wearing herself out as she hurried back and forth. This happened then, and it will continue to happen, because there are two kinds of people: those who resemble Martha and those who resemble Mary. As you heard, and as I will explain further, Christ blessed the second kind, not the first. There are people who clearly fit this pattern.

For example, they receive Christ into their home, but they do not want to listen to Him or ask Him anything. They bring the priest to perform the blessing of water in their home, but they do not want to hear the One who sends the priest and in whose name the priest acts. They accept Christ when He crowns them in Holy Matrimony, baptizes them, and grants them all the Mysteries, but they do not accept Christ Himself. Yes, they want all these necessary things, but they will not listen to Him. They have other concerns. Such people exist. Yet other people often benefit from what they possess. A religious magazine comes to the house. The person whose name is on it does not read it, but someone else reads it and is edified. A servant reads it, or another member of the household reads it.

Perhaps a neighbor or a cousin reads it; I do not know. The person who receives it never even opens it. He has a religious magazine in his home, but he or she does not read it; somebody else does. He has the Gospel, but somebody else is edified by it. He has a fine library with books about Christ, God, and eternity, but somebody else benefits. He himself gains nothing, because he never opens them. There are such aimless people. They existed then as well, and Martha was one of them. Martha invited Him, but Mary was edified. Why was Martha not edified? Because Martha had no eyes. What do you mean—did she not see Him in the neighborhood before she invited Him? She had eyes like those of a cat, not the eyes a human being ought to have, eyes that can see eternity. Mary discerned in this man something higher, something more substantial, something she might not find again tomorrow.

Martha knew what she was: she was the mistress of the house, and she thought that this would save her. That was how she thought, and she could not discern what was before her. It is difficult for a person to discern Jesus and to understand what is taking place around the person of Jesus. That is precisely why He is not valued as He should be, even though a person’s true benefit lies in Him. It is to a person’s benefit to have a relationship with Christ, with His Church, with His Mysteries, with His priests, with religious books, with sermons—with everything that belongs to Him. This is for the person’s good, yet he is blind. When is a person blind even though his eyes are open? When he lives in sin. Paul writes plainly in his Second Epistle to the Corinthians, in the fourth chapter, that the Gospel is veiled.

How is it veiled? How can it lie open before you, yet you read it and do not understand it? It is veiled. To whom is it veiled, Paul? To the unbelievers. Because they are unbelieving and sinful, they remain covered. Sin covers the meaning, the depth, and the spirit. Yet a simple person understands it. A simple person reads it and understands it better than an educated person—not merely what the words say, but what they say in the Spirit. “The god of this world,” Satan, “has blinded the minds of these unbelievers, so that the light of the Gospel of righteousness should not shine upon them”—so that they will not understand what it says. Yes, it is true that an uneducated woman may understand more than a university scholar, because Christ has revealed Himself to her.

He is the One who reveals Himself; He is not discovered by human effort. He revealed Himself to the shepherds and to the simple scholars from the East, who came and worshiped Him, while prominent and celebrated scholars right under their feet neither understood nor recognized Him. Where, then, will He reveal Himself? The same thing happens here. We are in our own home, in our own village, inside the Church, yet we do not know who descends when the bell rings and the priest begins, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” We see the priest as a professional or an opportunist, and we see the Church as a business run by priests. The devil is always ready to present it that way: “This is not for us. The priest has his own reasons for doing this work. Panagopoulos has his own reasons for speaking. The chanter wants to display his voice,” and so on.

By the same reasoning, a woman may go to display her dress, or a man to display his tie. That is what Satan suggests. And so, even though Christ is present, we see people leave. You have seen many people rise and walk out when the preacher comes forward to speak. Their action amounts to this: “I blaspheme You, Christ, and believe in my own way. I refuse to accept the man who now ascends the pulpit to magnify You, to speak about Your Most Holy Mother, and to speak about Your Saints.” If you do not accept the one I sent, you do not accept Me. Then you might as well tear out the pulpit, even though a Church without a pulpit is unthinkable. And yet, how many people want a Church without a pulpit! But how will you come to know Christ without the pulpit? There is indeed a class of people like the Martha we heard about tonight. She accused Mary.

“She is lazy,” as we would say in everyday language. “Why are You keeping her in there?” And how many people say the same thing? “You left your work and went to Church. You left your house, your sheep, and everything else, and went to Church. You go there to listen to those idlers, who only want to collect money for the diocese and the state.” Yes, the devil says such things. Martha likewise accused Mary of being lazy and of not caring as Martha did. Christ answered her gently, because the poor woman was blind. Her self-centeredness, her own way of being religious, and the religion she had fashioned for herself prevented her from seeing. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needful.” Everything else we do is secondary. The first things must come first.

The rest is secondary. What will it profit you to earn a few more drachmas in wages and lose your soul? How can you act this way? I come to your village tonight. The Most Holy Theotokos, My Mother, is preparing to die, yet you are not moved. You will not even prepare yourself to come. My Saints celebrate their feasts and are glorified through My name and for My name, yet you do not come. What are you making? What are you preparing? What have you achieved outside the Church all these years? What have you achieved? Tell Me. You are irritated. Nothing goes well for you. Everyone disappoints you, and you cannot accomplish anything. Why? Because I am absent.

I send rain when it is needed; I withhold the heat when it is needed; I uphold the earth beneath your feet, and so forth. You do none of these things, and yet such a person still does not believe. There are people who do not believe and live far from the Church, yet they rise to great heights. The devil points them out and says, “Look at him. He neither believes nor acknowledges God above, and see how well he is doing, though abandoned by God.” Why do you say he is abandoned by God? Look how well he is doing, you imagine. But where is he going? He is like a tall tree, a lofty laurel, or a towering cedar. Read the Psalmist: “I saw him exalted like a cedar of Lebanon; then I passed by again, and in a moment I could see neither him nor even the place where he had stood.” And this is true.

Look at all those who rose to prominence, became powerful, or grew rich far from God. What remained in the end? Everything was lost. Their family line disappeared; nothing remained. Others moved in; strangers came and now live amid the fruits of their labor. Anyone who thinks he can build without Christ is deceived. Matthew records in chapter twelve: “He who does not gather with Me scatters.” It sounds strange, even paradoxical. “He who does not gather with Me”—but I am gathering! No, you are scattering, because you are not gathering with Me. I have 168 hours in the week, and I divide them into my hours and His hours. What is this? He will not accept your altering the hours according to your own rules and in your own way, because you will fail.

I have appointed the time when you are to come here. I ring the bell; the semantron sounds, calling you to enter the Ark and be saved. Will you remain outside? Are you the architect who designed the Ark? You will drown, just as all the craftsmen who built the Ark drowned. In the same way, people will be lost, even though they donated the chandelier, built the Holy Altar, or brought gifts here, if they remain outside. No one should be absent from the Church, especially during these hours, which are the sweetest hours devoted to the Most Holy Theotokos, as I said yesterday. For us Orthodox, the Theotokos of Jesus appears at her sweetest at this time—allow me this expression; I am not laying down a doctrine here. And yet someone sits in the neighborhood, in the courtyard, or in the coffeehouse, without knowing what is taking place here at this very hour.

The Most Holy Theotokos is present; she is being magnified, and she receives our prayers to carry them to our Lord and God. Yet people expect everything to go well—their personal affairs, their families, the Church, and the nation. For we are one body. Some may say otherwise, but I cannot say, “If the state collapses, I will still be saved,” or, “It does not matter if the family, society, or the Church collapses.” “Though we are many, we are all one body.” Therefore, the more deeply we understand this, the better. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion.” What is the good portion? I am the good portion. Christ says, “I am the good portion.” If you failed to discern this portion, to attend to it, to make it your own, and to help another person understand it as well—

—your child, your wife, your husband, your father, your brother, or your neighbor, so that they too may share in this portion, which was given for all humanity—then you have failed, no matter what else you may accomplish. For one day He will shake this old dish called the earth, and everything will vanish. Know that it will all pass away. What will remain is the soul. And what Christ says next is striking—and this, Mr. Leftikos, must have stopped Martha cold: Mary chose a portion “which shall not be taken away from her.” She will take it with her. Whatever you may build will remain here, but she will take her portion with her. Christ is describing a condition that is transitional, certainly, yet one that a person will carry with him. And the soul will not depart naked.

The soul will not depart naked if it has been clothed with Christ here: “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” But you are naked. You possess only the ways of this world: the ways of social conduct, career, and all the rest. Very well, you are preparing things for Me over there; you are cooking at this very moment. You will know how to serve everything beautifully, to place it on the right, to handle the cutlery properly, and someone will praise you: “Well done; look how correctly you serve from the right.” I tell you, none of that matters. Sit here, so that I may speak to you about your immortal soul. You will easily manage all the rest, since I am the One who gives it to you, and it all depends on Me. Do not drive Me away, for I am the source both of all your other blessings and of your well-being in this world and the next. Many people imagine that they have too much work to do.

They are troubled about many things; it is not simply that they have many tasks. If they do not complete the work of the soul, then no matter what other work they complete, they have failed. They may have sewn countless suits during their lifetime, yet they have not even basted together the garment of their own soul. That is the point.

They have not yet basted together their burial shroud—the one many bring from Jerusalem so that it may be placed on them as a blessing when they die. You know how seamstresses baste a garment: they fit it on the woman or the man, try it on, and then sew and finish it. Many people have not yet basted this garment, though they have made so many other things in their lives. This is what a person must learn first: Why did you come into the world? As I was saying, people imagine that they came merely to live. How could they have come from somewhere before and beyond this life merely in order to live here?

To come from death only to enter this death—it would have been better never to have come at all. So, “one thing is needful”: Christ. It is often better for a child to remain uneducated but have Christ than to be educated and godless. Better for the child not to know how to say good morning than to be godless. Better not to know how to say thank you than to be godless and know nothing of Christ. What does it matter whether the child knows and possesses everything else? Even if the world praises him a thousand times, Christ has not written his name in His own plan. When a person hears this, it is an opportunity to remind himself: “My Christ, do You approve of the way I am living at this moment?” And often He will tell us, “No, I do not approve. I want you to come and listen, so that you may learn and then act.” Beloved, preaching is essential. Christ states this clearly in the Old Testament through the Prophet Amos, in the eighth chapter.

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will send a famine upon the world—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the word of God.” He speaks specifically of this famine of the word of God. He does not say that a few soup kitchens will solve matters, or that with a little cleverness people will stop dying, or that there will be somewhat less fornication and adultery, and so forth. No, that is not what He says. It is a famine of the word of God. And when you can trace your name with your finger in the dust on the pulpit, know that there is death there, not life. The pulpit is what will shed light on what this Church is, what Christ has done, what the Most Holy Theotokos has done, and what she suffered beneath the Cross for our sake. Yet we treat her merely as an idol. We must not simply offer incense before her without imitating her.

So attend to this portion, because everything else will remain here, and keep your eyes fixed on that which “shall not be taken away from her.” “Christ, whom is Martha caring for now, while You speak to her this way? Whom is she serving?” She is serving Me. For whom was Martha making her preparations? Was she not preparing everything for Christ? And why does she ask Mary to come and help her? This is a scene whose meaning is not easy to grasp. Why does she ask Mary to help? So they may make the meal more perfect, prepare the table better, make everything more presentable, share the burden of the work, certainly, and offer something finer to their honored Guest. Yet Christ does not accept it. “I do not want that,” He says. “I would rather you both come and sit here beside Me and listen than attend to My comforts.”

You would rather not listen to My words or put them into practice. From this we can understand how serious it is to sit beside Christ. When the bell rings and Christ comes down into the Church, and I say, “I will remain outside; I will not come near You, Christ,” then He says, “You do not want Me near you here, and you will not want Me near you there either. Woe to you on the Day of Judgment,” if you depart with such an attitude and such thoughts. As the passage concludes, it turns to another scene. While Christ was speaking, “a certain woman raised her voice.” There was a simple woman in the crowd who had been listening to these immortal words of Jesus, and she cried out, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed!” Toward whom was this blessing directed? Toward My Mother, who nursed Me.

Is that what you say? “Not me, but her?” You are mistaken. Christ also answers this woman. He does not say, “Yes indeed, blessed is the womb.” Instead, He says, “Pay closer attention, my good woman. Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.” The Most Holy Theotokos is blessed: “Rejoice, O full of grace”; rejoice in every way, for “the Lord is with you.” But that alone gains you nothing. Christ says, “You yourself must be blessed by hearing My words and putting them into practice.” My Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, is blessed, but the serious matter is for you to hear and act. Blessing My Mother gains you nothing unless you too become blessed, unless you too hear and act. These, in brief, are the lessons that emerge from tonight’s passage.

That is all for tonight.

«τὸ καταπέτασμα ἐσχίσθη ἀπὸ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω» του ναού. Αυτό που βλέπουμε σήμερα, το ιερό, εμείς εισερχόμεθα μέσα στα Άγια των Αγίων· τότε δεν μπορούσαμε να εισέλθουμε. Αυτό χαρακτηρίζει την αμαρτία, η οποία ήταν ένα μεσότοιχον μεταξύ Θεού και ανθρώπων. Και έρχεται ο Χριστός και διαρρηγνύει αυτό το χειρόγραφο των αμαρτιών επί του Σταυρού και κάνει την επικοινωνία του ανθρώπου μετά του Θεού. Ο άνθρωπος ηθελημένα μόνος του βάζει μπροστά ένα παραβάν και Του λέει: «Θεέ μου, δεν θέλω να Σε ακούω ούτε να Σε βλέπω». Εάν πάλι ο άνθρωπος μόνος του δεν βγάλει αυτή την αμαρτία, είναι αδύνατο να επικοινωνήσει με τον Θεό. Πολλές φορές βρισκόμαστε στην ανάγκη να πάρουμε ένα τηλέφωνο ή για πυρκαγιά ή για το Πρώτων Βοηθειών ή για κάτι άλλο. Παίρνουμε και δεν μας απαντά. Γιατί;

των ωραίων αυτών λόγων, από το «Ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν μακαριοῦσί με πᾶσαι αἱ γενεαί» και το υπόλοιπον της ενάτης ωδής, το «Μεγαλύνει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον καὶ ἠγαλλίασε τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ τῷ Σωτῆρί μου». Από κει ξεκινάει και είναι το υπόλοιπο όλο η θεία οικονομία. Θα ήθελα, λοιπόν, τους επιλήσμονες να υπενθυμίσω να φροντίσουν για το θέμα των αμαρτιών των ανθρώπων. Ότι έπεσε ο άνθρωπος δεν είναι τίποτα σοβαρό. Το ότι δεν εσηκώθη, αυτό είναι το εγκληματικό του. Πρέπει, επί παραδείγματι, να πας στην Αθήνα και να σε συναντήσουν να πηγαίνεις για την Πάτρα. «Για πού πάτε; Στην Αθήνα». «Μα εδώ έχεις πάει στα προάστια των Πατρών». «Α, σας ευχαριστώ πάρα πολύ». Και αντί να γυρίσεις να πας στην Αθήνα, να συνεχίζεις να πηγαίνεις για την Πάτρα. Τι θα θεωρηθεί ο άνθρωπος αυτός;

Το σάβανο, που πολλοί το έχουν φέρει από τα Ιεροσόλυμα για να τους το φορέσουν ως ευλογία στον θάνατό τους, δεν το έχουν τρυπώσει ακόμη. Ξέρετε, τα τρυπώνουν οι μοδίστρες, τα τεντώνουν απάνω στη γυναίκα, στον άντρα, έτσι, τα προβάρουν και στη συνέχεια τα ράβουν και τα τελειώνουν. Πολλοί δεν τα έχουν τρυπώσει ακόμη, εφόσον έχουν φτιάξει τόσα άλλα πράγματα στη ζωή τους. Αυτό πρέπει να μάθει πρώτα ο άνθρωπος. Γιατί ήρθες στον κόσμο; Και όπως έλεγα εσένα, νομίζουν ότι ήρθαν για να ζήσουν οι άνθρωποι. Πώς θα ήρθαν από πάνω και από πίσω για να ζήσουν;
