Summary
Each new year is time granted by God for repentance, spiritual correction, gratitude, and preparation for eternity. The miraculous conception of John the Baptist followed the long-delayed prayers of the righteous Zechariah and Elizabeth, announced by the Archangel Gabriel despite their old age. John’s humility before the eternal Christ teaches that genuine spiritual greatness consists in obedience to God, repentance, and faithful service rather than human status.

I wish you a happy New Year, blessed by our Lord, and may it be for the good of both our souls and our bodies.
God has granted us to enter this new year as well, the year 1980. He certainly has His reason. God does nothing without a reason. We pay no attention and imagine that we go on living simply because we choose to. On the one hand, we must give thanks, and on the other, we must fear. We thank You for all You have done for us. And we also thank You for what You still expect from us. Help us to bring it to completion. For if You grant us to remain alive in this year too, it means that there is still some good thing we have not yet put right. God is good. We are not good.
We very often mistake His goodness for weakness, although it is His love and compassion for mankind. Blessed are those who ask God to show them why He is still leaving them on earth. Many wanted to enter 1980 with us, but they did not. Nor do we know whether we ourselves will live through 1980. Every day you see what is happening all around us. People depart into eternity after God has granted them many years. I am not speaking, of course, about those who, through their own reckless behavior, decide for themselves when they will die. I am speaking of those who are careful, who fear and revere God, and who value and respect the additional time and days He grants them.
The one thing man does not hold in his own hands is time. Man has no firm hold on anything; he hangs in the void, between heaven and earth. Yesterday is no longer his, the present is nothing, and tomorrow does not belong to him. Yet he still refuses to understand. He says, “I exist.” But how do you exist? Have you seen the dogs that threaten us?
We cannot even pass through their neighborhood. But when the dogcatcher catches them in his net and throws them into his truck, they lose all their bravado, because they no longer have solid ground beneath their feet from which to act fierce. They have nothing. That is what man is like. In reality, there is no present. The words I have just spoken are already past, and those I am about to speak are still future. The present does not exist. And I do not know whether, at this very moment, He may switch off the current over there and say...
“The hour has come for the cypresses”—the hour of burial. To whom will I give an account? I will indeed give an account. Who can resist this? And yet man behaves like a brute. He uses time in his own way, for foolishness rather than for sober-mindedness and salvation. In any case, two things should make us afraid: God’s mercy and God’s forbearance. “But these,” someone will say, “are love.” Yes, but if we do not use them for good, then matters change. Is that not so? They are love and mercy, but if we fail to use them for good, matters change. We will be punished because we did not make good use of the time He gave us: because we did not repent; because we did not become better; because we did not correct our weaknesses; because we did not set right the injustices we committed and all the harm we caused; because we do not repent or weep; because we do not attend Church; and because we do not receive Holy Communion.
We do not love our neighbor, and we do not forgive those who have harmed us. God will call us to account for all these things. That is why there is danger, death, and fear. Indeed, during these days we ought to be even more afraid, if we are attentive. For I do not know whether you have noticed that there is one significant detail in the Old Testament and another in the New Testament. The detail in the Old Testament is that God Himself, in the persons of the three angels, came down to see whether the report of this sin, which had reached heaven, was true—to see what was happening in Sodom and Gomorrah. You remember that God came down and burned Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexual acts, an unnatural sexual depravity, a mortal sin. Today, in the place where that whole region of the Five Cities once stood...
There is water over its surface, the so-called Dead Sea, where nothing lives and nothing exists, and not even a bird flies overhead. This shows how severely God punishes sins of the flesh and that He will demand an account for them. So God Himself came down there. That is how grave the sin was. And now God Himself has come down again. If we ask Christ, “Why did You come down to earth?” He answers, “I came down because of man’s sin.” Could He not have sent an angel? Could He not have sent someone else? He Himself came. Yes, the matter is that serious. And when God comes and endures all that He endured—the humiliation we inflicted upon Him from the first day He came here until we crucified Him and laid Him in the tomb—you can understand how grave this is. And He endured all these things without complaint.
He will demand an account from each person for the sins he continues to commit without repenting. Someone may say that a sin can happen. But why does repentance not happen afterward? A sin may happen, but why is there no repentance? You were in Sodom; why did you not repent? Did repentance not suit you? We too commit sins. Why do we not repent? Why do we not change our lives? He does not add to our time so that we may simply do as we please. This is a grave matter; it is fear and trembling. It is good, of course, that we are still alive, but it is also fear and trembling if we do not use this time to put our sins in order.
During the time we were away, the Church set before us other events besides the Nativity: the Flight into Egypt, the return, and so forth. She set before us the Circumcision, Theophany, and the Synaxis of the Honorable Forerunner. She presented many things. Each has its own teaching, its own particular lessons, and its own doctrinal meaning. Christ endured all these things for us. And this cycle of fifteen days concluded with these great feasts. I do not know how many of us paid attention, how many sought to celebrate these feasts according to Christ, how many truly lived them, or how many were edified. In any case, the truth is that some of us took only the incidental benefits: we enjoyed the time off, received money, and received gifts.
We held celebrations and did everything of that kind. Most of us did not imitate the holy examples before us; we did not imitate them. Some of us may even have sinned more. Some cursed Saint Basil because they did not win the holiday lottery; others sinned in other ways; others lost their lives and were killed in the snow or elsewhere because of their own foolishness, and so on. But God did not come into the world for this. He came into the world to preach repentance to mankind, beginning with Himself as the example. The person who brought these feasts to their close is the Honorable Forerunner. He comes before us and sets the seal upon all these events through Christ’s Baptism and through the Synaxis in his honor, which we Orthodox celebrate. With your permission, I would like to say something this evening about this person.
He is a person whom people do not imitate. We celebrate his feast, and, as you know, many people bear the name John, but they do not imitate him. Even those who bear his name and celebrate his feast do not know where this person came from, when he first appeared upon the scene, why he came into this world, where he has been until this very day, or why we need him. So I would like to say something about him this evening. Anyone who wishes to follow these events and discover when the Honorable Forerunner first appeared upon the scene must open the writings of the Apostle and Evangelist Luke, chapter one, verses five through thirteen. There he will find...
There was a married couple named Zechariah and Elizabeth. Zechariah was a priest. They were both righteous people, but they had no child. They certainly prayed to God, but God did not give them one. Then, when they had reached an advanced age and all hope of having children had disappeared—he being an old man and his wife an old woman—Zechariah entered the Holy Place, the sanctuary as we call it, to offer incense. There, on the right side of the altar, he encountered an angel, and he was terrified when he saw him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid.”
“Your prayer has been heard. That is why I am here at this hour. Your wife will conceive and bear a son, and you shall name him John.” The elder, thinking of his own age and his wife’s, doubted that this could happen. “How shall I know this?” he said. “I am an old man, and my wife is also advanced in years.” For this answer the Archangel chastised him. He said, “I am Gabriel, who stands before the throne of God. Because of what you have said, because you doubted the power of God, you will remain silent and unable to speak until all these things have come to pass.” And indeed, from that very hour the man was mute. When he came outside, where the people were waiting in the temple, he began communicating with them by signs. They understood that he had seen something inside and that this was why...
this had happened. In any case, when his term of priestly service was completed, the man returned home. And just as the angel had told him, Elizabeth conceived. She was embarrassed by it and concealed her pregnancy from the people for five months. After that, however, she could no longer hide it. It became clear that she was pregnant, and she said, “My friends, now in my old age God has seen fit to take away this reproach from me, this shame of having no children.” Yet this is a shame which, sadly, we now choose for ourselves. She regarded childlessness as a curse; that was how it was understood then. A woman who does not bear children, or a married couple who do not have children although they are able to, was considered accursed. More than once...
I have heard the saint say, my beloved, that when a woman kills a child, it would have been preferable for her to commit a hundred murders rather than to kill that one child. For within that child lies the rest of all the generations that might follow—the many people who could come from that child and all that the child itself might become. Even if that child should prove to be a thorn, its offspring may be a rose, and you do not know how many descendants may come after it. Sadly, what was regarded as shame and reproach in the Old Testament is considered a compliment today. Today it is regarded as an honor, while the woman who bears whatever God gives her—one child, two, five, however many God may give—is regarded as accursed.
And yet they regarded it, as I have said, as reproach, shame, and a curse, and they shed rivers of tears for their childlessness to be taken away. But we willingly make ourselves childless, like clouds without water. Just as clouds pass by with no water in them to refresh the earth, but only wind, so is the married couple that brings no children into the world. For as long as children continue to be born, this is an assurance from God that He still loves mankind. Today, as you see, it is above all we Orthodox who are not having children. The Orthodox are not having children. From this one can understand that the campaign to stop Orthodox Christians from having children is satanic. Why are the Orthodox not having children? The Chinese have become a billion people, and elsewhere the world is full of children.
They are starving and have nothing to eat, so numerous are they. And yet their lack of food is not because there is insufficient land. There are untouched lands capable of sustaining a population a hundred times greater than the world’s present population. But people are idle, they do not work, and they have not developed those lands. Look at how many people Greece itself could support. It could support ten times its present population. Everything has been left deserted and uncultivated. Could people not live there? Australia could support forty times its present population. Canada and the world’s untouched lands lie abandoned. How can people say that the world cannot support its population? Who says such things? And this happens only among the Orthodox. Why? Because the Orthodox receive Baptism and are a thorn in Satan’s eye. Why do the others not receive Baptism? Because they bow toward the East. The Orthodox receive Baptism.
This war is being waged only against the Orthodox, wherever they may be. Even when they live abroad, this fashion follows close behind them. If you go abroad, you will see that a Greek household has one or two children, or none at all, while the Jewish household next door has nine, ten, twelve, or thirteen. The Jewish father does not support them all by himself; when they are old enough, they all work—and not only in the family business, but for other employers as well. Some people ask, “How will they support themselves?” We must go and work so that we may live. Why should we not work and live? Did Christ not work? Did Paul not work? Did we ourselves not work? Sadly, these things are said by parents who came from poor families. The wealthy, who never understood anything about family life and such matters, may say them; but so do the rest of us, who come from families of eight, ten, or twelve children. I myself am one of twelve children. My wife is also one of twelve children.
Today six of us are still living, and we work. One is a general, another a businessman, and so on. Why should you not work, my good man? Why? And yet today—since this subject has come up—we Greeks have reached the very bottom of the statistics for the whole world. We come last in the number of births, while we come first in meat consumption. Here we now eat more meat per person than anyone else in the world, yet we are last in births. This is because Satan knows where to strike. So Elizabeth says, “God has taken away my reproach; He has set right my shame.” Of course, at such an age she was embarrassed to be pregnant and to be seen by other people.
Within her womb she carried the greatest man after Christ. “Among those born of women,” it says, “there has risen no one greater than John the Forerunner.” No woman, it says, has ever given birth to anyone greater than John the Forerunner. Yet others might have mocked her at the coffeehouse when they saw this elderly woman walking about with a swollen belly. They might have said, “What is this old woman going to bring forth? Some kind of monster? Who knows what will come out of her?” This is precisely why, according to tradition, we have continued to light bonfires on the day of the birth of the Honorable Forerunner. You know this detail. In those days there were no means of communication or mass media—no telephones, television, or radio. Word spread that an old woman of a hundred was pregnant, and so on.
They agreed among themselves: “When, God willing, she gives birth, light a fire so that we too may see it and come over to find out what has happened.” And that is what they did. The custom has survived to this day, when we jump over the fires and fill the hospitals with people suffering burns because of our own foolishness.
So, then, this was a very serious event, because this man was not someone who came into the world by chance or by mistake. Most of our own children come by accident—we simply let whatever happens happen. Nor are they the fruit of prayer, except, of course, in the case of those few who understand what is involved and know what they are doing. They are the result of mistakes and of pleasure. “Your prayer has been heard,” the angel says. What prayer?
The prayer you offered when you were young. Did you not pray for a child then? “Yes, I did then—but not now.” God recorded it, and now He is answering you. What does it matter to Him if He chooses to answer you now? “Your prayer has been heard.” When you offered it, your prayer was entered into the record; but now the command was given for that prayer of Zechariah and Elizabeth to be fulfilled. God knows why. God makes no mistakes. We want everything now, instantly and miraculously. Sometimes we do receive answers like that, but for the most part we imagine that God’s clock is not keeping proper time, that it usually runs slow. Yet there are also times when it is exact. You cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” and rejoice when you see a child fall without being killed—her grace has placed its hand beneath him. A car crashes and you think no one could possibly come out alive, yet everyone does. Grace hastens to help.
We do have such cases. But in the other cases, things proceed in the old way: God’s clock always seems to run slow. These people prayed for years, and the answer came fifty years later—fifty years! They were bewildered. What was happening? Human reasoning, of course, says that if God intended to give them a child, He should have done so while they were young, when they could care for it, educate it, and stand beside it. You know the popular saying: marry young or become a monk young. Married life is difficult, childbirth is difficult, and raising children is difficult; you must bring the child up. Most of our women, with some exceptions, first plow all the fields of Satan...
Then, stiff as boards at thirty or forty years old, they try to give birth. How are they to give birth? How can the body dilate then? Young girls of fifteen, sixteen, or eighteen, by contrast, have bodies as supple as rubber and give birth naturally. Now we have one Caesarean after another. They say a woman cannot have a second child unless she has another Caesarean. But where has she been all those years? She has wandered here and there, through the ravines of sin and into women’s bachelor apartments. A woman is physically ready to bear children from the day her womanly cycle begins—at thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen. Our Most Holy Theotokos is the example. Everything else is a falsehood of our own making. That is why things have been turned upside down. The course of human life has changed; it is no longer as God made it to be, and so today we have all these strange conditions. In any case, the result was that God gave Zechariah and Elizabeth this child when He Himself willed.
That was what truly benefited them. Otherwise, He might have given them a child merely to play with and delight in, to take outside, show to others, photograph, and so forth. We treat children like ornaments. We do not regard them as persons, as images of Christ, for whom we will give an account and who bear a grave responsibility of their own. Few mothers understand this; most do not. And so Christ did not answer them then. Christ answered fifty years later. If, according to human reasoning, He had given them the child when they first asked—when they were young enough to care for it and stand beside it—He would merely have given them a child. He would not have given them the child. But now He gave them the child—not simply a child, but the one of whom He said that no greater man had been born. He gave them the Honorable Forerunner.
The Forerunner had to appear upon the scene forty or fifty years later, because that was when Christ would come into the world. It was as though God were saying to them, “Wait. I am keeping something good in store for you.” Of course, they must have continued pleading with God; and when Elizabeth’s monthly cycle ended and she entered the barrenness of old age, they must have grieved, thinking that the account had been closed, the file put away, and that they would depart childless, cursed, and bound for Hell. But God had something else in mind. Therefore, when we ask God for something, we must ask as He taught us: “Your will be done.” We must not say, “Our will be done.”
A lady was speaking here earlier about a married couple who have no children, saying that we should pray for them. That is good and holy—but do not try to force God. I told her that an Athonite priest once came here to Athens and served in Kypseli. A woman who had no children went to him and asked him to pray that God would give them a child. The elder, a simple man, prayed for twenty days. On the twentieth day he called her and said, “My lady, you will not have a child.” “Why?” she asked. He replied, “Because you are not capable of raising it as a Christian, and two souls would be lost: the child’s soul and your own. Therefore, to save both mother and child, God is not giving you a child.”
No one ever thinks of that. A person imagines having a child, taking it out in public, preserving the family name, leaving property to it, arranging its wedding—all sorts of things and wonders. But he does not see a soul. Others say, “I will educate him.” Really? Will you be able to educate him? However much you may wish to do so, who has ever completely formed another person? Did Adam and Eve succeed in forming Cain? Did they have television in those days, causing Cain to go astray? Was there a corrupt world outside, with stadiums, football pools, racetracks, and nakedness, that made him a murderer? Are you wiser? Am I wiser? “Your will be done, Lord. I pray to You. If You judge that this will be for my true benefit and for the child’s benefit, I will gladly receive it; and help me...
to stand beside the child as well as I can. But if not, for reasons that You can see, then do not grant it.” Many people are scandalized by such things. This subject once occupied me greatly—how people fall and then accuse even God Himself—and I gave six talks about it. Those talks were entitled “On Right-Hand Logismoi”: how Satan deceives us from the right and how we fall from the right. So, as I was saying, the answer came after fifty years. God applied what Paul says: “God having provided something better.” God foresaw something better, and so He did not give them this child when they asked for it. He worked a miracle, overturned the course of nature, and did everything necessary to fulfill the prayer of this righteous couple and make them the parents...
of the greatest Prophet. What a great honor: He made them the father and mother of the greatest Prophet, the Honorable Forerunner. John was born, and he was given the name John, just as the angel had said: “You shall name him John.” The moment of his circumcision was beautiful. Read about that too in the same chapter of Luke. On the eighth day, when they went to name him in accordance with the commandment—just as was done with our Christ, who on the eighth day was given the name Jesus, as the angel had said—they were asked what the child’s name would be. Elizabeth had learned, whether through gestures or writing...
from her elderly husband what the angel had told him about the child in her womb, and she proposed the name John. But there was no John among their relatives. “How can we call him that?” they asked. She said, “John.” The others would not agree. You see, in such matters outsiders often think their opinion counts for more than that of the parents themselves. Here comes the grandmother wanting her own name given; then the grandfather wants his; then the father-in-law and the mother-in-law—and many married couples even separate over it. No one will yield; each clings to it as though it were poison. “Why John?” they said. “Which John? There is no John in our family.” The old man understood, but he still could not speak. “Let us ask him,” they said. So they gave him a writing tablet; and at that moment, even before he wrote, his mouth was opened.
He told them, “His name is John.” That is his name; we are not the ones choosing it. The angel had already named him. God had already given this child his name. We are simply making it official. “His name is John.” This is also how a mother should speak: “Mother-in-law, I promised this child to the Most Holy Theotokos, and that is why I have him. I promised him to Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and that is why I have him. I did not make a vow so that I could give him your name. I said, ‘Give me a child and I shall name him Nektarios, or Maria, or Antonia, or Antonios,’ or whatever the name may be. I made my vow to the saint, not to you.” But where can we find the courage that old man had? “His name is John.” That settles it. And John remained his name. Yet our own pride insists that our name must be preserved. “But what if we never have another child?” Why should we not? And even if God gives us no more, what of it? If your name or mine does not survive, the world has lost nothing. And if it does survive, what has really been achieved?
But how difficult it is for us to imitate these details in the lives of these persons and in these events. In any case, according to His humanity, John was six months older than our Christ; our Christ was younger. Yet John said—and I do not know whether you noticed it—“He who comes after me has come to be before me.” Although He comes after me, He is nevertheless before me. According to His humanity, He would come six months later; but according to His divinity, because He is also God, He is before me. “And I am not worthy,” John says, “to loose the strap of His sandals.” That was a lowly task performed by certain servants in great households, especially in the East.
Among the household servants there was a man or woman who stood at the door when the master came home, removed his dusty, muddy, or dirty shoes, and gave him another pair—light and clean—to wear inside the house. When the master was about to go out again, the servant would put his outdoor shoes back on him, now cleaned and polished. This was, of course, the lowest service in the household. There were chamber servants, cooks, and others, but this was the lowest of all. John is saying, “I am not worthy even to perform this task for the One who is coming to me.” He confesses that Christ existed before him and therefore is God, since He existed before His earthly coming, even though John, as I have said, was six months older. When Herod issued that decree—you remember that we spoke of it before Christmas...
that all the children two years old and under were to be slaughtered—John was included in the reckoning. He too had to be killed, because the Magi arrived about two years later. The proof is that Herod issued the order “according to the time which he had carefully ascertained from the Magi,” commanding that all boys two years old and under be killed. There were only six months between John and Christ, so John too was still a young child. At the time this command was given, John must have been about twelve, thirteen, or fourteen months older than the age Christ had been at the time of His birth. In any case, if our Christ was, for example, two years old, John was two years and six months old. If our Christ was fourteen months old, John was twenty months old. John was six months older than He was, and ordinarily he too should have been slaughtered. Thus John was also driven into exile from infancy. Here a tradition fills the gap for us and explains how John came to be in the wilderness.
His elderly mother, Elizabeth, took him in her arms and fled with him. But Herod’s soldiers caught up and were about to seize her. As they drew near, she offered a brief prayer and said to a small mountain before her, “O mountain, receive the child and his mother. Receive us, mountain; enclose us. Open your mouth and swallow us, both child and mother.” At that moment they found themselves on the other side of the mountain, and Herod’s soldiers did not capture them. This is how John came to be in the wilderness. We do not know how long his parents lived or how long they cared for him there.
The Evangelist Mark, who tells us about the events in the wilderness, says that John lived there and fed on locusts and wild honey. His garment was made of camel’s hair, and around his waist he wore a leather belt. He did not simply tie a vine, a wire, a piece of twine, or a rope around himself. He wore a leather belt and fed on locusts and wild honey. The wild bees made their nests there among the rocks, while the locusts were insects found in great numbers in the wilderness of the Jordan. They are edible, rather like our shrimp from the sea. We do not eat them simply because we are not accustomed to them. Do we Greeks eat frogs? The Italians do.
We, for example, do not eat cats, but others do—what can I say? So John ate what he found there and lived there. John is the last prophet. He is the one who both foretold something and then saw it. Isaiah, for example, preached about our Christ, but he died eight hundred and fifty years beforehand. What he foretold came to pass, but others saw it. John both prophesied about Christ and saw Christ himself. He stood precisely on the boundary between the Law and grace, between shadow and light, between the Old Testament and the New Testament—right in the middle. On one side he sees the New Testament, and on the other the Old Testament; darkness on one side, light on the other; the Law on one side, grace on the other. He stands at the boundary. And he teaches this...
Indeed, he symbolizes it even more clearly through his clothing. He could have worn a sheepskin: slaughter an animal, put on its hide, and keep warm. But the Evangelist tells us that he wore no such thing; he wore camel’s hair. To understand this in terms of the Old Testament, one must know that there were clean animals and unclean animals. The clean animals, which people were permitted to eat, were those with divided, cloven hooves—such as the goat, the sheep, and the ox—and which also chewed the cud. You have seen how their hooves are divided. These were clean. But animals whose hooves were not divided, such as...
the horse, the donkey, the mule, and the camel, were unclean. Or if they did not chew the cud, they were unclean and forbidden. The pig, for example, does not chew the cud either. Such animals were unclean.
The camel, however, has a particular distinction, you know. Its hoof is not divided, which makes it unclean, but it does chew the cud. In other words, it is half clean and half unclean. And so it symbolizes John, who stands between clean and unclean, between the Law and grace, between the old covenant and the New. Thus John preaches even through his clothing. He also preaches through his belt, and this is a great lesson. If I ask for a leather belt, my nous—the spiritual intellect—immediately understands that this leather was once part of an animal.
It came from a living animal, with flesh and all the rest; then it was treated and dried, and now I fasten it around my waist so that I can walk more easily.
Take care to mortify your flesh. Take care, through fasting, to dry up the desires of the flesh, because your flesh will become your enemy. John teaches not only through his way of life—eating the two humblest foods found in the wilderness, wild honey and locusts—but also through his clothing. He reminds us that a person benefits by going without certain things, by not continually feeding and pampering the flesh, but by mortifying it. Then one can walk the road to salvation more easily. Once, when I was speaking here about something similar, someone interrupted me and said, ‘If that is so, why did God make so many things for man?’ And indeed, a person is overwhelmed if he goes, for example, into a meat market...
and sees all the different kinds of meat, from poultry to pheasant, and from pheasant to who knows what else. Or if he sees how a single animal has been divided into cuts so that many people, with many different needs, can be served from that one animal. ‘Mr. Kostas, please cut me a little tender fillet; my child is sick.’ ‘I’ll give you some, Mrs. Katina; just wait.’ Then another comes: ‘Mr. Nikos, I need a little liver for my elder.’ ‘I’ll give you some liver.’ ‘You know, I need something for a stew.’ ‘I’ll cut you something for a stew.’ ‘I need something for roasting.’ ‘I’ll cut you something for roasting.’ ‘I need something for boiling.’ ‘I’ll cut you something for boiling.’ Whatever do you need?
Can it not be found somewhere on an ox or a calf? What do you need? Which cut do you want? How will you cook it? What kind of stomach is it for, or what illness? Can the right piece not be found on that one animal? The entire animal is not suitable only for boiling, or only for roasting, or only for one particular use. Whatever each person needs can be found on it. Who made all these things? Did I make them, or you, or our mother-in-law, or anyone else? He made them. And if you go to a fish market, you are overwhelmed by everything from whitebait to red porgy, grouper, and great sea bream. For whom are all these things? For man, who loves good food. If you go to a fruit market and see everything there, your mind reels. The same is true of vegetables and all the rest. Whatever could you want?
There are appetizers and who knows what else. For whom did God make them? For man. You are right. Then give them to John to eat. Here is the secret; this is precisely the point. Is John doing what is right? Does he perhaps insult God by refusing to eat them? We must return to the account of creation. There we shall see how matters stand. God made all these things before He made man. Man was the last of creation. When His beloved child, man, arrived, everything had already been made. Man stood before it all in amazement, and God said to him, ‘All things are permitted to you. Everything you see, I have made for you. It is all yours: your wife, your possessions; and for you, woman, your husband. Everything is yours. But take care: one thing alone is not yours—that tree over there. Do not touch it.’ And yet man...
with the help of the devil, set his hand precisely to that one thing.
And the result? The result was that man was driven out of Paradise. Consequently, because man sinned, he is now deprived of these things. It was to man before the Fall, my dear friend—and, by extension, to all who are listening now or will listen in the future—that God said, ‘All things are permitted to you.’
But Paul says, ‘All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial.’ I may eat meat every day; it is mine. But it is not beneficial to eat it every day—not only because of my soul, but also because I will develop high cholesterol, uric acid, diabetes, and other ailments. My wife is mine, and my husband is mine—but with moderation, because you live after the Fall.
All things are lawful, yet through misuse weakness comes upon you. A sick person will look at these foods from a distance and follow a careful diet, little by little. So God made no mistake, and John, through the Holy Spirit, discerned that although he could eat anything—although he could go and enjoy the comforts found in Jerusalem or in the surrounding towns—he chose otherwise because he valued the spiritual life. These things were not beneficial for him, so he remained there and sustained himself on those two foods. That is how it is: ‘All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial,’ says Paul, even though those things had been given and made for man—if man had not fallen, if man had not sinned. Let us not be deceived about this.
God found John in the wilderness and instructed him to begin preaching. There were two prophecies concerning John. One, found in Malachi, spoke of his mission when he would come into the world: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’ ‘My messenger.’ He was not an angel by nature, but a messenger. That is what ‘My messenger’ means here, because of his mission. He was like a courier. Couriers come and bring us messages and telegrams; that is why they are called messengers. ‘My messenger before Your face.’ But there was also another prophecy, which said that he would begin preaching from the wilderness.
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; the crooked shall become straight, and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ Through your preaching, it says, prepare a road: let the valleys be filled and the mountains brought down, so that the way may become smooth and easy. And this is true. Man has dug many ravines and has fallen into the very pit he dug himself, perhaps intending others to fall into it. Others have raised whole mountains of sins before themselves and cannot walk straight along the way of God.
John, sent into the world, preaches and calls people to metanoia, to repentance, so that they may return to God. His preaching, it says, will level these things: it will fill the ravines and bring down those mountains, those obstacles. For there truly are many things within a person that rise like mountains before him, and he cannot overcome them. But if he entrusts himself to Christ, Christ puts these things in order and overcomes them. John therefore had to bring the prophecy to fulfillment. And indeed, he went out and preached. Word spread among the people, and they regarded him as great and mighty. They went out to him and confessed their sins. He placed them in the waters of the Jordan and kept them there as they confessed their sins, and the water, as a figure of the Holy Spirit, cleansed them. Our Christ also entered the Jordan, but He came up immediately out of the water.
He had no sins to confess. In any event, John remained there. And what did he preach? Metanoia—repentance. Christ preached the same thing. What John said, Christ also said. One proclaimed, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,’ and the other proclaimed, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’ Christ says the same today. Christ preaches repentance and calls people to have their nature transformed, to become royal children fit for the Kingdom, because the Kingdom requires royal children. Do not listen when many of us use falsely humble words and say, ‘I am a worm,’ and so forth. Of course, we do not mean it, because as soon as someone wounds our ego or threatens our interests, we bite. Then we say, ‘Do you know who I am?’ and ‘Do you know what position I held?’ But at first we speak with false humility. In any event, Christ wants people to become royal children. As we have spoken about this many times, take it to heart and make use of it throughout 1980.
To become a royal child, you must receive the King, Christ, in Holy Communion from the Holy Chalice. Without Holy Communion, you do not become a royal child; you remain a child of the devil. It is Holy Communion that transforms human nature. It places the Blood of Christ within your blood and His Body within your body, making you of one blood and one body with Him, and thus you become a royal child. Then you have a rightful place in the Kingdom and are able to enter it. To be a Christian is a great thing—so great that no one can fully understand it. Satan says—and people have heard him say it—‘If Christians knew what it meant to be Christian, and if they preserved the purity of their Baptism and received Christ in Holy Communion, we demons would not merely cease walking upon the earth; we would already have fled into Hades.’ We would not even be able to trouble a human being. But the Christian does none of these things. The priest comes out and calls him, but he remains standing where he is. He waits for Christmas, imagining that once a year he will finally be worthy to approach.
He waits for Great and Holy Thursday, when he imagines he will be worthy to approach. He waits for the fifteenth of August, when he imagines he will be worthy. On all the other days, he does not go. He goes and takes the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, which then becomes a witness against him. He does not receive the Gift. Consequently, he does not become a royal child, because he is not transformed. So I take this opportunity to tell you again: it will be a great achievement if you manage to receive Holy Communion more frequently, if you manage to unite yourselves with the Holy Chalice. It is a great thing, a great blessing. Heaven rejoices. And how greatly Heaven now grieves, seeing the Holy Chalice brought out and offered, saying, ‘Come. This is why I come down from Heaven: to make you saints, to make you royal children—and you do not come.’ There is no sadder moment and no greater blasphemy than when a person fails to prepare himself to receive Holy Communion always, as frequently as possible—every Sunday, even every day if possible. Yet these things remain neglected, and we expect...
We give away a pair of slippers that do not fit us and imagine that this will take us to Heaven, to the Kingdom of Heaven. Do slippers make royal children? Change what flows in your blood—that is the point. The same preaching, then, continues to insist: repent. Metanoia, repentance, is needed every day. I fall today; I need repentance. I fall tomorrow; I need repentance. I fall the next day; I need repentance. As I once told you, that father, Saint Arsenius the Great, who had even raised a dead man, was always saying a short prayer: ‘Lord, grant me more time to make a beginning of repentance.’ A person never knows when he has truly repented. Every fall requires repentance. To fall is human. You are a human being. Perhaps you fell through your eyes or your hands; perhaps someone deceived you or pushed you; perhaps you were careless or gave way to desire. You fell—but get up, get up. You became dirty, but I see you go and wash yourself. You become dirty again, and you wash again. You become dirty once more, and once more you wash yourself.
You fall, and you get up. You fall, and others help you up. You fall, and you rise again. The evil lies in falling and refusing to rise, remaining in your sins. And Christ insists on this, because Adam was driven out: he sinned and did not repent. For Adam’s descendants to return to the Kingdom of Heaven, they must either not sin or repent whenever they fall. Since we cannot remain without sin, we must repent continually—and yet we do not. How long will God put up with us? That is the serious question. This, then, is what John preached; this is what Christ preached when He came into the world; and this is what the Church preaches every day. In the evening, if you have attended Vespers, the priest says in a secret prayer, “Receive them in repentance and confession.” If someone in my congregation should die tonight, if one of those who remain beneath the priest’s epitrachelion should die...
The faithful of the parish are beneath the priest’s epitrachelion. If any of them should die, he prays, “Receive him in repentance and confession.” And for a person to return to Paradise, as the Church prays on the day of his death, the chanters say, “Through repentance I too have found the way to become once again a citizen of Paradise.” “Make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” The way is through repentance.
It does not say, “Having found the way through almsgiving,” or through something else, but through repentance. This is repentance—and receiving Christ in Holy Communion. For if a person does not receive Christ in Holy Communion, he cannot become a child of the King and, consequently, has no right to the Kingdom. This was John’s preaching. While he was there, he learned that a lawless union was taking place in the palace. The king had taken his brother’s wife and was living with her unlawfully. So John took his staff, went up to the palace, and spoke a few words.
He did not berate him or shout. He simply went and said, “O king, it is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” That was all. He did not condemn him; he merely reminded him. We too must do this. “My lady, what you are doing is murder”—nothing more. “Madam, what you are doing is a sin.” “My dear friend, this is not in accordance with the Gospel.” Then leave. Say it and simply remind the person that what he is doing is not right. The king could have taken his brother’s wife if his brother had died without a child. But his brother was still alive and had a child as well—that devilish Salome, who later danced, and the head of the Honorable Forerunner was given to her. Yes, this is a grave matter. And today adultery is proclaimed from the rooftops. There is hardly a married couple...
Only a small percentage—five or ten percent—remain in which neither the wife nor the husband is an adulterer. All the rest are adulterers. This is a sin hated by God. Do you understand? And John’s end was that his head was offered as the prize for that lustful dance. He went down into Hades and preached there, just as he had preached here.

Το μόνο που δεν κρατάει στο χέρι του ο άνθρωπος είναι ο χρόνος. Ο άνθρωπος δεν κρατάει, είναι στο κενό, είναι μεταξύ ουρανού και γης. Το χθες δεν το έχει, το παρόν τίποτα, το αύριο δεν είναι δικό του και πάλι δεν θέλει να το καταλάβει. Λέει: «Εγώ είμαι». Πώς είσαι εσύ; Έχετε δει τους σκύλους που μας φοβερίζουν;
Λοιπόν... Λοιπόν, ένα περιστατικό πολύ σοβαρό, και τούτο διότι αυτός ο άνθρωπος δεν ήταν ένας άνθρωπος που ήρθε κατά σύμπτωση, κατά λάθος. Για τα δικά μας τα παιδιά, περισσότερα έρχονται κατά λάθος. Θα έρχονται ό,τι θέλουν. Ούτε είναι αποτελέσματα προσευχής, εκτός βέβαια ορισμένων που καταλαβαίνουν περί τίνος πρόκειται και ξέρουν τι κάνουν. Είναι αποτελέσματα λάθους και αποτελέσματα ηδονής. «Εισακούσθη», λέει, «η προσευχή σου». Ποια προσευχή;
δει τα είδη των κρεάτων, από πουλερικά μέχρι φασιανό, από φασιανό μέχρι δεν ξέρω τι, κι αν δει επίσης ένα ζώο πώς το έχει κατατομήσει, ώστε από ένα και το αυτό ζώο να μπορούν να ικανοποιούνται πολλοί άνθρωποι με διάφορες ανάγκες. «Κύριε Κώστα μου, κόψε μου λιγάκι, που έχω το παιδί μου άρρωστο, λίγο φιλετάκι θέλω». «Να σου δώσω, κυρά Κατίνα, περίμενε». Να σου η άλλη: «Λίγο συκωτάκι θέλω, κύριε Νίκο μου, που έχω τον γέροντα». «Να σου δώσω συκωτάκι». «Ξέρεις, θέλω να μου βγάλεις για μαγείρεμα». «Να σου βγάλω για μαγείρεμα». «Ξέρεις, θέλω για ψητό». «Να σου βγάλω για ψητό». «Ξέρεις, θέλω για βραστό». «Να σου βγάλω για βραστό». Τι θέλεις;
