Summary

Saint Spyridon and Saint Nicholas are presented as Spirit-bearing defenders of Christ’s divinity and the Holy Trinity at the First Council of Nicaea. By holding a tile that released fire, water, and earth, he visibly illustrated how three distinct realities could remain one, leading an Arian philosopher to embrace the Orthodox faith. His response to his daughter’s death teaches that suffering and bodily death are not the ultimate evil, since sin alone separates humanity from God.

In our last talk, we spoke about a person whose feast was celebrated that day—namely, Saint Nicholas. We had the opportunity to draw a few things from his life and teaching, so that we too might be edified.

That evening, in connection with that talk, I wanted to draw also from the life of another person and speak about him as well, so that we would not lose this opportunity given to us by the Holy Church. That other person is Saint Spyridon. I call him the other person because both of these men played an important role in Orthodoxy. Both took part in the First Ecumenical Council, where the doctrine of the Holy Trinity was defined, as was the Divinity of Jesus.

Indeed, these were two persons, and—if I may say so in passing—we should not fail to make use of the second, Saint Spyridon, for our own edification. For both men were used by the Holy Spirit to perform two of the four miracles that took place at the First Ecumenical Council. You know that four miracles occurred at that Council. The signs that accompanied it prove that the Council was Spirit-bearing and that it was the Holy Spirit who guided its proceedings and determined its doctrinal conclusion.

The first miracle associated with the First Ecumenical Council took place before the Council had even assembled, in what they called the antechamber. It was performed by the Holy Spirit through Saint Achillius, bishop of Larissa, who drew oil from a stone—oil. He had challenged Arius that, if his teaching were true, he should command a lamp standing there before them to produce oil. Arius changed the challenge and said to him, “The stone.” And indeed, Saint Achillius invoked the Holy Trinity, and the stone produced oil.

The second miracle was the one Christ performed for Saint Nicholas, together with the Most Holy Theotokos, in the prison. We heard about it the day before yesterday. They came to bless the hand of Arius—forgive me, of Nicholas—who had struck Arius because of the blasphemies he was uttering against the Divinity of Jesus. There was also a third miracle, performed by one of the Fathers, named Koudounis, though I do not know it well enough to recount it accurately. And the fourth, the crowning miracle, was that of Saint Spyridon: the miracle of the tile, through which the Holy Trinity and the Divinity of Jesus were demonstrated in a practical and visible way. And precisely for this reason...

Concerning Saint Nicholas, we heard of his right faith, his meekness, and his self-restraint: “a rule of faith and an image of meekness, a teacher of self-restraint,” and so forth. As for Saint Spyridon, our Church has preserved his dismissal hymn, which says: “You were revealed as a champion of the First Council and a wonderworker, Spyridon, our Father.” For this reason, I believe that this should not be left...

A champion, because he truly fought as a champion. The others also performed miracles and showed that they were not there on their own, but that the grace of the Holy Spirit was present. Yet the miracle that surpassed all the others was his, because in a practical and visible way he silenced Arius. It makes no difference that Arius admitted the truth for a moment, or that afterward he took it all back and continued along his chosen path. For I do not know whether you are aware that Arius was once pressed by his mother to say whether his teaching contained any measure of truth.

If it did not, then the teaching of Athanasius had to be correct. She adjured him by the milk with which she had nursed him. She said, “By the milk I fed you, tell me: are you right, or is Athanasius?” And he replied, “Athanasius is right. But now I cannot turn back.” What does it mean to be a heretic? Satan is unrepentant. For when we speak of heresy, we are speaking of the devil. We are not speaking merely of an error, of someone who was misled. The love of God is boundless. Otherwise Paul, the chosen vessel, would not have said, “Reject a heretical man after a first and second admonition.”

Of this commander. Satan is unrepentant. He does not repent. You therefore waste your time when you speak with a heretic; you will accomplish nothing. If you ever find yourself discussing matters with a heretic, do it for the sake of the others who are present, so that he may not lead someone else astray. If you speak with him, know from the outset that you will not change his mind by so much as a single stroke of a letter, because Satan is unrepentant. You are not speaking with a person who has simply made a mistake; you are speaking with someone who has the power to distort the truth. This is precisely why I say that the Saint surpasses all the others. It would be good now to discuss some of these things. Not that we can exhaust the subject—we cannot. Subjects like these are never exhausted; they simply provide an opportunity...

For people, when they leave, to take care to read more about what they have heard. If someone asks when Saint Spyridon was a bishop, he must go back to the years of Constantine the Great. The Saint was a bishop around the year 343. Where did he come from? What was his homeland? You will find that he was from Cyprus. He was born there, in Cyprus. The event that formally brought him to prominence, gave him the opportunity to be revealed as great, and brought him into the arena of the Church—where he came to be venerated, with so many miracles and all the rest—was the time of this Council. That is where he first appears publicly, even though his entire life was a succession of miracles. If you read the Saint’s Life, which is about thirty or forty pages long, you will find around fifty remarkable miracles. All these miracles took place before he died and was proclaimed a Saint. Some people say, “They made him a Saint too.” The Church does not make Saints. The Church simply gives formal recognition and says, “Take heed: this man is already a Saint.” This is shown by the streaming of myrrh, by the myrrh he gives forth, by the fragrance, by the miracles, and by the incorruption of his body—its remaining intact rather than decomposing—and so forth.

From these things you will see that this man has a different relationship with the rest of humanity, and the Church comes forward and declares, “He is a Saint.” The Church does not manufacture Saints or make them to order. All these miracles were already present during his lifetime, before the man had even fallen asleep in the Lord. Listen, then, to how his part in the First Ecumenical Council is described: “When Constantine the Great was emperor, this holy and renowned First Ecumenical Council of 318 Fathers assembled to pronounce judgment and depose Arius, who called Christ the Creator a creature—Christ, from whom are all things and through whom all things came to be.”

And yet this creature called the Creator a creature and spoke impiously against the doctrine that the Son of God, begotten of the unoriginate Father, is consubstantial with the Father. You may remember what I once told you about this word: the twenty years of suffering, exile, and persecution endured by Athanasius the Great all centered upon this single word. The struggle was to prevent homoousios, “consubstantial,” from being changed into homoiousios, “of similar essence.” Do you understand? All for one iota. Yet we often say, “Are they not Christians too?” I do not know whether they are Christians, or whether others should say that they are Christians or not. In any case, Arius would not accept that the Son is consubstantial with the Father. The foremost champions of the heresy, it says, were Eusebius of Nicomedia...

Theognis of Nicaea, and Maris of Chalcedon. With Arius as their leader, they held that the true God from God was created, and so they blasphemed. The champions of true piety, however, who had assembled to strengthen Orthodoxy and condemn this antichristian delusion, were the majority. They were all virtuous and wondrous Fathers. Their deeds and virtues, shining with the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, revealed the holiness of these men. Among them, the great Alexander, renowned among the Saints, was especially distinguished. At that time he was still a hieromonk, but he represented the blessed Metrophanes, Patriarch of Constantinople, who was confined to his bed.

The Patriarch of Constantinople had sent Alexander as his representative. Alexander himself later became great. Those of you gentlemen who visit the Holy Mountain may have seen at the Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou the icon in which our Lord appears with His tunic torn. Alexander had seen this in a vision. He asked, “Lord, who tore Your tunic?” And the Lord answered, “Arius tore it.” Athanasius the Great was also there, still a deacon. He too was representing a Patriarch—the Patriarch of Alexandria. Of course, neither of these two men was held in very high esteem at the time. People said, “They have sent deacons here to represent the Patriarchates?” Yes—but they were stars.

Athanasius, of course, was equal to ten Patriarchs, not merely one. But this was proved later. Near these luminaries, it says, stood the humble-minded Spyridon. Humility is presented here as both his virtue and his weapon. His virtue and the divine grace dwelling within him, it says, surpassed the worldly wisdom of the philosophers. They possessed learning; he possessed humility. One of the philosophers was exceptionally skilled in speech, for he had great eloquence and learning. With his considerable experience, he supported Arius so effectively that he silenced many opponents, and the Orthodox could find no answer to his arguments or to the support he gave Arius. Arius, it says, had beside him a man who excelled in worldly wisdom.

He surpassed the other philosophers. In other words, Arius had a capable man who wielded speech with great power. In any case, the discussion—this verbal contest—continued for many days without reaching a conclusion and without anyone being able to overthrow the liar. When the Saint saw the philosopher growing heated and fierce, acting as though he would swallow the Orthodox whole, hurling insults against Christ and uttering other blasphemous words, he approached him and said, “Come and speak with me as well, philosopher. Very well, you have spoken with everyone else; come and speak with me too, and let the two of us exchange a few words.” This, of course, appeared...

Ridiculous to him, because Saint Spyridon was regarded as uneducated; but it appeared so even to our own people. Our side was utterly unwilling to let Saint Spyridon speak, because they saw that with all their words, skill, and learning they had advanced matters only two steps. If Saint Spyridon, who did not possess all the learning they did, came forward, he might set the whole cause back ten steps. Consequently, they did not want him to speak and tried to prevent him. The other Orthodox, seeing his simplicity, his poor command of Greek, and his limited education, restrained him and would not allow him to speak with the philosopher. But the Saint did not obey them in this. According to another tradition, he asked the emperor, Constantine the Great, who presided over the Council, to grant him permission to speak.

Consequently, he had to be allowed to speak, regardless of the consequences or repercussions. Knowing how greatly the wisdom from God above, possessed by the Saint, surpasses human wisdom, which comes to nothing and is itself foolish, he said to the philosopher once he had been given the floor: “Grant me a brief hearing.” In other words, “Listen to me for a moment.” “Go ahead,” the philosopher replied. “Say whatever you wish. I am listening.” Then Spyridon, great in virtue though simple in learning, filled with the Holy Spirit, said: “There is one God of heaven and earth and of all created things. He made the heavens and the earth...

The heavenly hosts, and everything else. He formed man and made all things that exist, both visible and invisible. By His word and His Spirit the heavens were established, the earth was brought forth, the sea was held within its bounds, the air was spread out, every living creature came into being, and man was formed—His great creation and wondrous handiwork. All things came into being through Him, as John the Theologian says in his opening verses: ‘Without Him nothing was made that was made.’ Knowing from these words that the Word of God is the true Son of God, consubstantial with the Father, we believe that He was born of the Virgin, was crucified, was buried as man, and as God rose again for our salvation...

Granting us incorruptible and eternal life. We also believe that He will come to judge the whole world, and that we shall give Him an account of all our deeds, words, and thoughts. We know Him to be consubstantial with the Father, sharing the same throne, equal in honor and equal in glory. And although the Holy Trinity is three persons and three hypostases, these are equally divine and of one essence—ineffable and incomprehensible. The human nous, the spiritual intellect, cannot comprehend this because the Divinity is infinite. Just as it is impossible to contain the whole expanse of the sea in the smallest vessel, so it is impossible for the human nous to contain the infinite ocean of the incomprehensible Divinity. And so, philosopher, that you may be convinced of the truth, pay attention...

“Consider this small and utterly insignificant thing that I am about to show you. We ought not, of course, to compare that uncreated and transcendent nature with a created and perishable thing. But because the eyes are more trustworthy than the ears, and because everyone of little faith, like us and like you, does not readily believe unless he sees with his bodily eyes, I wish to convince you by something visible.” Then he drew a tile from his cassock. “You are composed of three elements, yet you have one essence and one nature.” The tile, he says, consists of three things, yet it has one essence and nature. I would therefore like you to know that there is another tradition concerning this event, which explains how the tile came to be in his possession.

The Saint was grieved by everything that had been taking place for so many days at the Council, while no one was able to silence Arius and his supporters. He himself did not dare to take a stand, because he regarded himself as a man of little education. Yet something burned within him, and it seems that with faith he asked Christ to show him a way, or to help in whatever way He knew best. The following account is told. The Saint always had his deacon with him. One evening, on the eve of this miracle, the deacon received his blessing to go to sleep. But his bishop said to him, “Please make sure that you wake me in the morning as well.”

The deacon went to his room to sleep. But he had forgotten something, so about a minute later he returned to remind him or ask him about it. When he opened the door, he saw the Elder on his knees in prayer. He did not interrupt him, but decided to ask him the next day. He left, went to his room, said his prayers, and fell asleep. Morning came, and he rose and went to wake him. But when he opened the door, he saw him still kneeling just as he had left him the night before. The Saint realized that the door had opened and turned around as though awakening from a deep sleep. He asked, “Has God granted us His new day?” “Yes,” the deacon answered. “Come here. Please go and find a low-roofed house nearby, and bring me a piece of tile.”

Clearly, the Lord Himself had illumined him and shown him what to do that day. Surely He had revealed that the Saint would serve as the pilot who, through a practical demonstration, would bring the Council’s deliberations out of the mire. The deacon obeyed. Clergy who desire salvation always say, “May it be blessed,” without questioning. He went and found a small piece of tile somewhere—perhaps half a tile, I do not know—and the Saint put it into his pocket and took it with him to the Council. Now we have returned to the point where we left off; I made this digression so that you could see how the account fits together. Then, after saying these things, the Saint made the sign of the Precious Cross. Holding the tile in his left hand, he raised his right hand and said, “In the name of the Father...”

Immediately fire rose upward. “And of the Son”—and water fell downward. “And of the Holy Spirit”—and earth remained in his hands. Another detail is missing here: the sign was repeated, as though he said, “In the name of the Father,” and fire came down; “and of the Son,” and water rose up; “and of the Holy Spirit,” and once again the tile appeared whole before him, so that no one could object. When everyone saw this miracle, they were beside themselves with amazement, especially the philosopher. He was struck by what he heard, astonished in his soul, and left speechless—the very man who had come in pride, imagining that he would swallow the Elder alive.

After a long while, he opened his mouth again and answered, “O man, I accept and confess everything just as you have said.” The Saint then told him, “Since you confess it in words, take care also to show by your deeds that you know who God is, He who created all things. Let us go to the Church, so that you may receive the seal of the Orthodox faith—that is, be baptized and become Orthodox.”

In any event, as you know, another detail is missing here. Arius then said, “The words are a man’s, but the deed is the Lord’s.” Yet Satan remains Satan, and still he would not turn back. My dear ones, keep this firmly in mind. This is a terrible beast. Egotism is a terrible thing. Do not let Satan take hold of you.

Do not let him take hold of you. And you see it even today in the case of the Papists. Do they not see that they are in error? They do not, because they will not repent. You hear them speaking about love and all that nonsense. They love us because they need us. How else will the Papists establish themselves? What do they want us for—as brave companions, or merely to line up these little sheep who have strayed and are lost? It is a deceptive voice that speaks these words. Why do they want us? What do they need us for? We possess the truth, and we are a thorn in their eye. And what is really behind these overtures? I believe institutional interests stand behind them. This is a political and religious operation; it is not a religious act, nor is it an act of love. What need do they have of us? Have they been saved, so that through them we too might be saved? And love above what?

You must first be saved before concerning yourself with saving others. But you are not saved. How will they overturn and disprove the miracles God has worked and continues to work even now? I said the other day: have they ever received the Holy Light? Can they raise the dead? The Lord gives the Holy Light to those who possess the truth. And if we confess that it is the Lord who gives the Holy Light, how could I join myself to them? Of all Arius’s company, only six remained outside. The others repented and entered the Church. But six of them, always headed, of course, by Arius, remained outside. In this way the matter was concluded at the Council. Later we shall see Saint Spyridon returning to his home and his native land.

While he was away at the Council, his daughter died at home. When he returned, he found that she had already been buried. I did not need to tell you this, but it has significance for many of us who imagine that, when we walk in God’s way, do what God desires, and live in harmony with Him, God no longer has the right to touch our household. We think that He must not permit illness, death, or bitterness to come upon us. But what does this show us? The things we call evil, ugly, bitter, and mournful are trifles. There is only one true evil: sin. Not even bodily death is evil.

We carry death on a bier and dress everything in black, even though we proclaim Christ’s war against death. We stay away from the Church for three years. We remove sweets from the house and offer no treats, as though Death might acquire a taste for sweetness and return. These are false notions of our own. We turn the pictures around, put black bands on them, leave ourselves unshaven, and act as though we could announce, “Under law number 815, death is forbidden!” Do you understand? God has no such things written in His decrees. These are customs people have invented in various forms. In any event, the Saint returned. You may ask whether he rejoiced. Of course he did not. But did he blaspheme God? Did he lose his faith, as some people do when they stop going to Church, abandon their faith, deny God, and blaspheme Him, saying, “What good did God do me? He took my child,” and so forth? Yet what work could have been more important than the work this Saint had been doing?

Was God supposed to enter into a partnership with him and say, “You will come and do this work for Me here at the Council, and I will guard your child at home”? No. You did the work, God took your child, and the child was not lost. Indeed, the Saint spoke beautiful words. You know the remarkable account which says that he addressed the dead girl and spoke with her. Think what this means. When he returned, a woman from the neighborhood came to him weeping bitterly. It seems that his daughter had died suddenly.

She said to him, “Elder, this is what happened: I had entrusted some money and valuables to Irene.” Irene was the girl’s name. “Where could we look for them? We searched, but could not find them.” The Saint then rose, and together with several others went to the cemetery. He spoke to the girl and said, “Irene, where are this woman’s belongings?” And the girl answered, “I placed them in such-and-such a place.”

The others heard Irene speak. “Irene, my child, where did you put the woman’s gold jewelry?” “I have hidden it in such-and-such a place, Father,” she replied. They trembled, it says, at the extraordinary miracle. Then the Saint spoke to her once more, as though he were lord of life and death: “Sleep, my child, until the Lord raises you at the common Resurrection.” Do people do such things today? They do not. If they did, would they not have to be saints? Of course they would. The Church, therefore, does not make people saints. They are recognized by all as saints because they have lived such an angelic life. Now, did I not say at the beginning that I could never exhaust this subject?

Let me also tell you about the outcome. Would you like to hear it? When everyone was about to sign, two members of the Council were absent because they had died; nevertheless, the acts of the Council were found to bear their signatures as well. Listen to the account. On the Sunday of the Holy Fathers you will find the following: “Some say that two of the Holy Fathers, that is, two bishops, departed to God before they could sign.” They died during the Council. Therefore, by command of the most renowned emperor, the decree of the Holy Synod was placed in their coffins, which were then secured and sealed with the imperial seals.

They guarded it with at least two signatures, sealed it, and placed it there for safekeeping. And, O miracle, through the ineffable judgments of the Holy God, it was found to have been confirmed by them as well. It bore the signatures of those two bishops who had died. This was a fifth miracle, one that I myself had not noticed. Father Elias was kind enough to bring the account to me. I think it unnecessary to mention the names of all the most prominent men present there. Let us mention only the godly Spyridon of Trimythous, who triumphed in that sacred gathering, together with Niketas, Elkitas, and Baptistas, those former supporters of Arius among the philosophers whom Arius had kept at his side as his right hand.

He prevailed through the power of his utterly simple words and through the miracle of the tile, as that philosopher himself testified to his disciples, according to the account of Gelasius. In the little time remaining, would you like to learn how the Saint’s holy relic came to Corfu? You know that it is one of the five relics of this kind found upon the earth. Saint Spyridon’s relic was transferred from Trimythous in Cyprus to Constantinople. When the imperial city fell to the Turks, people rescued whatever they could seize and carry away. It is still said today that a man named Kalochairetis took two relics from there, loading them onto a pack animal.

He even removed the heads so that the relics would not protrude and could be transported more easily. For this reason, those of you who have venerated the relic of Saint Spyridon may have noticed that the head has been reattached above the body.

In any event, the relics were brought from there. The account says that Kalochairetis was found here in Corfu and that the relic was entrusted to him for safekeeping. He himself did not bring it from Constantinople; another man brought it. I also want you to know that, even today, the relic belongs by inheritance to a family, not to the island or to the Church of Saint Spyridon. The deeds and the other legal documents belong to that household, although a certain share also belongs to the Church. There are similar arrangements, for example, with Saint Philothei of Athens, whose relic is kept by the heirs at her house, and also with Saint Nektarios of Aegina, whose relatives still have a say. To open the reliquary containing the holy relics of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, three keys must be used: the monastery’s key, held by the abbess; the bishop’s—that is, the Metropolitan’s—key; and the family’s key. Three keys are required before the reliquary can be opened, whether to give a portion of the relic or for any other purpose. Listen, then, to how these events are described by Methodios, the former Metropolitan of Corfu.

According to a decree of the Council of Ten of the Venetian Republic, issued on May 14, 1489—that is, after the fall of Constantinople—they took the relics and traveled south to territories the Turks had not yet occupied. They came to Macedonia. When the Turks later advanced there, they fled to Epirus, and the man carrying the relics remained for a time in Paramythia. When that region too was occupied, he escaped from there and went to Corfu. The account states that the priest Gregory Polyeuktos received the holy relic of the Saint from Constantinople—following the saying, “When the oak has fallen, every man gathers wood,” meaning that once Constantinople had fallen, each person seized or rescued whatever he could—and carried it to Paramythia in Epirus, where he remained for some time. He was the man who brought it from Constantinople as far as that place.

From there, around 1456, he brought it to Corfu. This same Gregory Polyeuktos found in Corfu the priest George Kalochairetis—who now enters the story—a refugee and fellow citizen of his, and bequeathed the sacred relic of Saint Spyridon to him; he gave it to him, entrusted it to him, and placed it in his care. Luke Kalochairetis, perhaps one of the heirs and a son of the priest George Kalochairetis, then gave the sacred relic to his niece Asimina. He too had inherited a share from his father, and he gave it to his niece as an inheritance and dowry. Her name was Asimina. Thus, as the author notes, the sacred and venerable relic of the Saint, acquired through its rescue from the fallen city, came into the possession of Luke Kalochairetis.

By a deed of gift drawn up in Arta in the year 1512, it became part of a dowry. Now, he says, I do not know precisely how it passed from George Kalochairetis to Luke Kalochairetis. What I do know, he says, is that there is a contract in Arta, dated 1512, which states the following: “I further declare that the relic of Saint Spyridon, which is in Korphoi”—that is, Corfu—“came to us by inheritance, and that we possessed the right of guardianship over that sacred relic. That same guardianship and authority I now grant to the aforementioned Asimina.” In other words, he was passing these rights on to his niece.

It was given, then, as a dowry. This is why, to this very day, the sacred relic remains the property of that family, which has the authority to administer it, make use of it, and arrange for its movements. That family still exists today. Asimina, daughter of Philip, who was the son of George Kalochairetis, possessed the sacred relic of Saint Spyridon as part of her dowry and married Stamatios Voulgaris. By a will dated November 25, 1571, she directed that the sacred relic of the Saint should remain as a lifelong inheritance and pass to her descendants. And that is how the matter has continued to this day. There was also another witness at that time who testified...

...that the priest Kalochairetis received from Constantinople the relics of Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora, together with other fragments of sacred relics, and placed them in two sacks filled with straw, as I told you. He loaded them onto a pack animal and carried them safely through the occupied Greek lands, convincing everyone he met that he was merely transporting animal feed. In other words, he had put the relics inside sacks, packed straw all around them, and loaded one sack on each side. People thought that the man was simply carrying fodder—that is, food for the animals. That is how the story emerges. Now I would also like to show you something of the Saint’s struggles in defense of Orthodoxy.

Among his other miracles, he also worked one against the commander-in-chief of the Venetian fleet and governor of the island of Corfu, Andrea Pisani. That was his name. What did this papist mind conceive? He wanted to erect an altar in the Saint’s church so that a Latin priest could celebrate liturgy upon it every day. He imagined that by doing so he would offer thanks to the Saint for freeing the city from the assault of the barbarians.

The Saint appeared to him in a dream and ordered him to abandon this undertaking and stop entertaining such thoughts. But he would not be persuaded, because he trusted his own theologian more. He told the theologian about his dream, and the theologian said to him, “Come now! Do you really believe such things? The dream was a delusion produced through the cooperation of the devil.” Pisani also pressured the priests who held the rights to the Saint’s relic and threatened them because they would not consent to this audacious plan. They did not want such a thing to take place inside the Orthodox Church. Since the vision did not dissuade him from his undertaking, the powder magazine in the Old Fortress mysteriously caught fire during the night.

The explosion demolished the houses in the citadel and killed everyone nearby, as well as many other Latins. The magazine caught fire by itself up there and brought everything down; the gunpowder blew everything to pieces. Andrea Pisani was strangled between two wooden beams that closed around his neck. Two beams caught him by the neck and choked him. His malicious theologian was found lying dead in the moat. Whoever plots against Orthodoxy will meet his reckoning, sooner or later. This, of course, does not give us the right to sin, remain in our sin, and suppose that, since the Saint protects us, our faith is secure. No! We cannot preserve it by ourselves. He will preserve it for us if we guard ourselves from sin.

If we repent, confess our sins, and become his people, then he will preserve our faith as well. While these things were taking place—and they all happened in a single moment—the appointed guard of the powder magazine saw the Saint approaching with a torch. The Saint then carried him close to the Church of the Crucified Christ. The guard at the powder magazine, which was consumed by fire, saw the Saint come with a torch and set it ablaze. But at the same time, the Saint took the guard away, brought him down to his church, and saved him.

He brought him to the church below, and then the powder magazine was set on fire. A short while later, in Venice, on that very same night, lightning struck Pisani’s portrait and burned it away. Even his picture in Venice was consumed, so that it would no longer remain anywhere, yet no one else in his house was harmed.

Lightning struck and burned the portrait. These extraordinary events took place in 1718, on November 12. On another occasion, Turks came against Corfu with a fleet, and the Saint utterly routed them. So, if anyone seeks to know whether this Saint is a champion of Orthodoxy, he will find proof in many different ways. You understand, then: we have Saint Nicholas, we have Saint Spyridon, and I do not know how many other saints. Read their lives and see what these people did, how they labored in defending and illuminating the truth, so that a person might behold the truth—Christ—in truth. It is no lie. Yet today we simply continue to celebrate them without imitating them.

So she managed the matter as best she could. It took her a long time to complete her business, and she did not return on the appointed day she had agreed upon with the goldsmith to whom she had left the object as a pledge. When she finally went to repay him, he said, “You never told me anything. In any case, you are late, and you have nothing with me.” She left in tears, ashamed, saying, “What shall I tell the bishop now?” Later, for some reason, the goldsmith opened his safe. Among his valuables was the golden snake. He saw it with its mouth open, moving its tongue—it was a living snake! Terrified, he shut the safe at once and realized that something was seriously wrong. He then sent for the woman, though he did so indirectly: “Come back. I saw how distressed you were. Perhaps you are right, and perhaps I do not remember clearly. Let me look.”

He opened the safe again very slowly, because the snake had already shown him its tongue and what awaited him. This time he saw that it was gold again. He gave it to the woman, and she took it back to the Saint. “Let us return it,” she said, “to the one who gave it to us.” She went to the garden and placed it there, and the snake returned to its hollow. Is this man a saint or is he not?

You have already heard how the dead woman answered when he called to her. What can I possibly tell you about all his miracles? There was a man who would come and ask him for money. “Go and take some from that box over there,” the Saint told him. The man asked, “Will you not come and see how much I take?” “No,” he replied, “there is no need.” So the man took the money, conducted his business, and later brought it back. “I have returned it,” he said. “Go and put it back where you took it from,” the Saint answered. This continued for some time.

Whenever the man needed money, he would be told, “The box is over there.” He would take what he needed and ask, “Will you not count it?” “I will not count it,” came the answer. When he returned it, the Saint would say, “Put it back where you found it.” After the second and third time, the devil entered the man’s heart. “The priest does not count the money,” he thought, “so I may as well take it.” The third time, then, he took the money and later pretended to return it, but did not place it back in the box. Boldly, he appeared a fourth time to ask for more. “May I take some?” he asked. “Go to the box,” the Saint told him. He went and said, “There is nothing in it.” “But did you put back what you took?” the Saint asked. On another matter, I want you to know that the Saint was a shepherd. He had neither a hired shepherd nor a dog to guard his flock. His sheep, goats, and other animals would leave the fold by themselves, graze, and return. They never entered another person’s field or damaged another person’s crops.

People would say, “The Saint’s sheep are passing by.” He had neither a dog nor anyone else guarding the flock and the fold. One night, a wicked man jumped over the fence and stole a ram. He put it on his shoulders and tried to leave, but he could not. However hard he tried, he could only wander round and round the fold. Then he tried to put the ram down so that he could escape, but he could not even release it from his shoulders. He carried it there until morning. And in the morning, the Saint came walking up the hill. There stood the thief with his head bowed, still bearing the ram, unable either to leave or to remove it from his back. The Saint approached him and said, “Tell me, was what you did a good thing?”

“Is stealing a good thing? As far as I can see, you are able to carry it. It has remained upon you so that you may learn what it means to be human. If another person had caught you—but now God has caught you,” he said. “If a man had caught you... You cannot see God, so you think He is hidden behind the clouds and say, ‘I do not see God now.’ But what will you do now? Repent. Do you understand? Repent. In any case, I forgive you. Take the ram for your trouble and go. After all, you carried it on your back all night!” Such was his forbearance. “Take it and go.” On another occasion, a foreign woman, a Turkish woman, came to him carrying her dead little child in her arms. She laid the child at his feet and, since she could not speak his language, gestured to him to raise it from the dead.

But then he thought, “How can I pray for someone unbaptized? Will God hear me? Will God hear me on behalf of an unbeliever?” He asked his deacon, Artemidoros, or something like that, “What do you think?” What humility! Do we imagine that we know everything? Should a person never ask anyone beneath him? Indeed, a person should be willing to ask even the most insignificant person, for you do not know through whom God may speak. The young deacon answered him seriously: “You have prayed about so many things, and God has answered you. This woman is a human being who bears the image of God. Does she not deserve a prayer? Should you not do this for her?” That is what the young man said. The Saint laid the baby down and began to pray with tears. And behold, the child came back to life. It began to speak and cried for its mother, wanting milk. But the mother, overcome by emotion, died.

She died at that very moment—from joy! How could she endure such a thing? So now we had a child restored to life and its mother lying dead. The Saint prayed again, and the mother also came back to life. Now there were two people raised from the dead. After this, they listened all the more readily to his counsel; he catechized them and baptized them. What can I tell you first? We would have to remain here until next year, until December 12, speaking about these things. Together with Saint Nicholas, keep Saint Spyridon as a blessing in your homes and as a blessing and strength for your faith.

Βάλει. Και βλέπετε μέχρι σήμερα, για τη γνώμη ότι οι παπικοί δεν βλέπουνε ότι έχουν λάθος. Γιατί δεν μετανοούν. Ακούτε που λένε αγάπες και πράσινα άλογα. Μας αγαπούνε, μας έχουν ανάγκη. Πώς θα κατοχυρωθούν οι παπικοί; Και τι μας θέλουν, για παλικαράδες ή εκεία τίκα να μας στρώσουν, να στρώσουν τα προβατάκια αυτά που χαθήκανε, που είναι χαμένα. Λέει ο λύκος αυτός αυτά τα λόγια. Τι μας θέλουν εμάς, τι μας έχουνε; Έχουμε την αλήθεια και είμαστε καρφί στο μάτι τους. Ποιος είναι, ποιον είναι τώρα; Άλλοι είναι πίσω από αυτούς. Είναι πολιτικοθρησκευτική ενέργεια, λέει, είναι θρησκευτική ενέργεια, ούτε ενέργεια αγάπης. Τι ανάγκη μας έχουνε; Σώθηκαν αυτοί και θα σωθούμε κι εμείς; Και αγάπη πάνω απ’ τι;

Ξανά, σιγά σιγά το άνοιγε, γιατί προηγουμένως του είχε δείξει τη γλώσσα του, τι σε περιμένει, και το βλέπει ξανά χρυσό. Και της το έδωσε και το πήρε και πήγε και του το έδωσε. «Ας το δώσουμε», λέει, «σ' εκείνον που μας το έδωσε». Και πηγαίνει στο περιβόλι και το αποθέτει στο περιβόλι, και το φίδι ξανά πήγε στην κουφάλα του. Είναι Άγιος αυτός ή δεν είναι;
