Summary
Within the Magnificat, the Theotokos prophetically confesses the unborn child as her Lord, God, and Savior, anticipating the name Jesus announced in Luke 1:31 and bestowed at His circumcision. Panagopoulos relates Christ’s birth without a human father and His divine existence without a mother to Melchizedek in Genesis 14, a figure of the eternal priesthood. By the Holy Spirit the Son assumed flesh and blood, overthrowing the devil and death. His presence is known inwardly through compunction, gratitude, joy, and amendment of life, especially in repentance, worship, and Communion. Against the carnal and merely natural person stands the spiritual person, who answers injury with mercy. Mary rejoices in God’s calling and fulfills images of the victorious woman of Genesis 3:15, the Ark, the golden jar, Aaron’s rod, Jacob’s ladder, and the bush; yet her words “my Savior” affirm that she too required deliverance from ancestral sin.

You will remember that our subject was taken from what is called the Ninth Ode, from the ode spoken by our Most Holy Theotokos in the hill country of Judah, there in the house of Zechariah and Elizabeth, in thanksgiving to God for what God had providentially brought about in her and through her at that moment.
We have already given two talks. We spoke about the reason this poem, this ode, was uttered. Then we said a few words about the opening words proclaimed by the Theotokos after, of course, the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit.
For, as we said, she did not speak these things on her own authority. He who was within her gave her the words and spoke them through her; He moved her tongue.
But, as I see from my notes, we stopped at the point where we were about to discuss the words, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” She calls Him Lord. Here, according to the Fathers, she recognizes who it is that she bears within her.
At that moment, in a certain sense, she gives Him His name. For “Lord” is not merely a name; it has meaning, and behind it stands God Himself. “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” The Lord is her Savior, and she calls Him her Savior.
By saying “the Lord” and “my Savior,” she gives Him, in the fullest sense, His name. For, as you know, names were given by the parents. The name Isaac, for example, was given by Abraham, as we read concerning Isaac’s birth: “And Abraham called the name of his son Isaac.” And there is also the name of the Precious Forerunner.
What does the name of our Lord, Jesus, mean? It means “Savior.” “And you shall call His name Jesus,” for He will save His people from their sins. Jesus will save; Jesus is the Savior. So when she calls the Lord her Savior, she is already speaking His name, because the Savior is Jesus. She gives Him His name. And because, as we have said before, Christ in His humanity had only a mother and no father, she gives Him His name even before He comes forth into the world. Later, at the circumcision, as you know from what we read in Luke, He was given the name Jesus, the name that had been given by the angel. From her dialogue with the Archangel, the Theotokos knows who the child she will conceive is to be; and so here she identifies Him precisely as Jesus, her Savior.
Thus, in a certain sense, the name is bestowed here by our Most Holy Theotokos before Christ is even born and comes into the world, before the time of His circumcision.
The name Jesus was chosen by God the Father, as you know, through the Holy Spirit. The Father alone begets Him in His divinity, without a mother. And so His mother also had to give Him the name she had heard—the mother who alone bore Him in His humanity, without a father. She repeats that name by calling Him Savior. Jesus means Savior: He is the one whom I shall bear.
As I told you, she had learned the name earlier, during her conversation with the Archangel: “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus,” as it says in Luke. Jesus means Savior; therefore, He is my Savior.
Here within me I bear my Savior; I bear Jesus; I bear my Lord; I bear my God—my God and my Savior. “My soul magnifies the Lord.”
These are the words that are spoken. And remember what I told you: “When the days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child,” and so forth, as Luke 2:21 also tells us, “His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.”
This is the child you will conceive; the one you will bear will be called Jesus. “He will save His people from their sins,” and so forth. Christ, then, in His humanity had a mother, and now His mother, in a certain sense, acknowledges His name and proclaims it prophetically.
Just as the name was given prophetically and beforehand by God the Father, so it was also formally given by His mother. Many people have not understood what it means that Jesus is “without father” and “without mother.”
Indeed, my brothers and sisters, someone even telephoned and asked me what this passage means. There is also a heresy that has taken its name from the type presented in this account. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, Paul, seeking to convince his fellow Jews, brings forward a person from the Old Testament named Melchizedek. He does this to show them that Melchizedek was especially honored by Abraham: Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything, and Melchizedek offered bread and wine and blessed Abraham. Yet Melchizedek is described as being without father, without mother, and without genealogy.
Christ, Paul tells the Hebrews—and through them he teaches us as well—was without father, without mother, and without genealogy. As Isaiah says, “Who shall declare His generation?”
In His humanity He is without father: He has a mother, but no father. In His divinity He is without mother: He has a Father, but no mother. Melchizedek, then, was a type of Christ, although there is also a heresy connected with Melchizedek. Many people, as I said, cannot grasp this.
They cannot understand how Melchizedek was a type of Christ. Paul refers to him again in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Writing to his own people, he seeks to help them return and acknowledge Christ, and he sets before them many other passages explaining why Christ came into the world.
Why, for example, did God send His Son into the world? “Since, therefore, the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same.” Since human beings were made of flesh and blood, He also partook in a similar manner—not identically, but similarly: not by the will of man and woman, not by the will of the flesh or of bodily desire, but through the Holy Spirit He became man.
He became man in order to bring to nothing the one who held the power of death, that is, the devil—to destroy him, defeat him, overcome him, and once again crush the serpent, as we said in the previous lesson.
Melchizedek, then, was a type of Christ. The Father declares that He is to be named Jesus, while His mother says, “Jesus is my Savior.” Jesus is not simply a person’s name, as though He were merely another man named Jesus. No.
It is a Hebrew name, and the name of this Jesus has a particular meaning: He is my Savior and, by extension, your Savior as well. I am the beginning, and then come all the rest of you who will receive Him—the One whom I offer you today in place of the first Eve, who closed Paradise. I offer you the One who will open Paradise for you. Within her is her Savior, and He is the One who moves her.
In proportion to the grace a person receives, he also experiences its flashes, its pulses, its stirrings, and its exultation: “And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
There is, in fact, a detail in Isaiah. I do not know whether you read the Old Testament. It is mentioned in a dialogue between Saint Athanasius the Great and Antiochus—I do not know whether you have that book—in which Antiochus asks him how a person can know that Christ is within him.
Many people say, “There, Scripture says that Christ—that is, the Kingdom of God—is within you. Therefore I have Christ, who is the Kingdom, within me.” But that is not the meaning of that verse.
The meaning of “the Kingdom of God is within you” is not that we have the Kingdom inside us. The meaning of that verse is: “The Kingdom of God is among you.” How, then, does the Kingdom come?
He says, “The Kingdom of God is among you.” He Himself was the Kingdom. Surely the wicked scribes and Pharisees did not have Christ within them, or the Kingdom of God within them. “The Kingdom of God is among you,” He says. It does not come in a way that can be outwardly observed; yet you are unwilling to understand it, unwilling to grasp it, and so you will not see it.
Many of our theologians also say that “the Kingdom of God is within you” means that it is inside us. They have not noticed that the Greek expression means “among you, in your midst.” They have overlooked this and interpreted it as though it meant “within.”
“The Kingdom of God is among you.” The other interpretation has no place here. A person will know Christ’s presence from the stirrings within him: from how he feels at Pascha, how he feels at Theophany, how he feels when he receives Holy Communion, when he attends Church, keeps vigil, prays, or weeps—from the inward stirrings he experiences and from the joy within him.
From these things he will know that he has conceived Christ; there is no other way for him to know it.
So, in answer to the question that Antiochus put to Saint Athanasius the Great, Saint Athanasius appealed to Isaiah. Isaiah writes prophetically about this and says: “Because of fear of You, O Lord, we conceived in the womb, travailed, and brought forth the spirit of Your salvation.” Saint Athanasius then explains: Just as a woman who has conceived knows without doubt, from the movements of the child in her womb, that she has conceived fruit and is pregnant, so also the soul of a true Christian knows—not from words alone, but from deeds and from the stirrings of the heart, especially at the time of the feasts, of illumination, and of receiving the Holy Body and Blood of Christ—from the joy of his soul, he learns that he has received the Holy Spirit. In this way a person will know whether he truly has a relationship with Christ, whether his own soul has conceived Christ, and whether it possesses and preserves Him within.
Those who have at some point come to metanoia, to repentance, are able to speak about this. What stirrings they experience after their repentance!
They truly feel within themselves that a different air is blowing—something else that they cannot define. They cannot help sensing that some other element has overshadowed them: something called grace, something called spirit, something called gift—something they had never imagined before. From the very moment they leave the place of Holy Confession, they are different people. They see differently, feel differently, and find consolation where before they could not be consoled.
They find solutions where before they could find none. They see what they did not see before. They hate what they once loved, and they love what they once hated. Who brought these things about? Who produced this entire change?
Wherever they may be, they say, “Glory to You, O God! Glory to You, O God! Glory to You, O God!” What prompts them to say these things? No one can truly say, “Glory to You, O God,” without the Holy Spirit. It is impossible. Nor can anyone truly confess “Jesus Christ” unless he has the grace of the Holy Spirit.
We can testify to this from experience. How is it that, whereas before we were slow to give glory to God, now we bless Him? It is because Someone has entered within and now moves the organs of praise. He has taken hold of the person inwardly and changed him by one hundred and eighty degrees, as we say.
This is why there is a prophetic verse in Psalm 50 which we all recite, though we should pay close attention to it: “Make me hear joy and gladness; the bones that were humbled shall rejoice.” From the depths of his heart, a person often gives thanks to God even for things that would cause others to blaspheme Him.
Something strange takes place within the Christian. It is no longer he who performs this action; it is performed by the grace that has entered within him. This grace, this Christ, is the One who moved the tongue of our Most Holy Theotokos, set it trembling, and caused her to speak these words.
A Father of the Church says, “Even the tears of those who repent are sweeter than the pleasures of the theater.”
It is true that a person becomes something extraordinary—an angelic human being. No one can understand what is happening, what has taken place within him. This is what it is: grace is present, transforming everything.
That is why one Saint says, “Lord, give me a manifest sign of Your love by granting me a fountain of unceasing tears.”
Does it not seem mad to see someone weeping and yet rejoicing that he weeps? And these tears are not his own; they belong to the grace that visits him. But we cannot understand or feel this because we still live far away, in the world.
“My spirit rejoices” is like the words, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name,” and, “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.”
These things seem like madness to the world, just as they once seemed to us before the mercy of God called us and we turned back.
That is how they seemed to us. Now these things no longer seem strange. The one point we must notice is this: she makes a distinction. She says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul.” Forgive me—that is not the passage.
She says, “My soul magnifies the Lord”—I confused it with the Psalms—“my soul magnifies the Lord.” And then, a little further on, “my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” She distinguishes between soul and spirit.
What is the human being—soul or spirit? It makes little difference, since the soul is also sometimes called spirit in Holy Scripture. Nevertheless, the Spirit—the grace of the Holy Spirit—is something distinct that overshadows the soul and causes it to think differently.
Does someone who lives far from God and remains unbaptized possess the same grace as one who has been baptized? And what of someone who was baptized but lives a prodigal life and has therefore quenched the Spirit, contrary to the words of Saint Paul: “Do not quench the Spirit”?
Does he possess what is possessed by someone who has preserved the purity of his Baptism? Is a person who lives in sin and without metanoia, far from the Church, dragged about by his flesh, the world, and his pleasures, in the same spiritual state?
Is he in the same state as one who lives in metanoia within the Church—praying, united with others, making Holy Confession, and receiving Holy Communion? Is there no difference at all between them? Does one possess something the other does not? He possesses the grace of the Holy Spirit.
According to Saint Paul, the human being appears in three states: carnal, natural, and spiritual. Saint Paul presents these three states. Have you ever read the First Epistle to the Corinthians? In its second chapter he mentions these three categories.
In verse fourteen and the verses that follow, he says:
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged by no one.”
You are carnal, because “where there are jealousy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and walking according to man?” Paul presents three categories: carnal people, spiritual people, and natural people. Listen to an interpretation given by Theophylact of Bulgaria.
He may seem to be using “spirit” and “soul” to mean the same thing, but in fact he distinguishes them. He calls “natural” the person who lives according to nature and is governed by human reasoning: he neither commits evils contrary to nature nor reaches beyond nature toward the gifts of grace.
This is the person who says, “I do not bother anyone, but I do not want anyone to bother me. I am the natural man. I do no good, but neither will I do any harm.” That is certainly the basic level. But he calls “spiritual” the person who has risen above the laws of nature and no longer thinks according to merely human ways.
And he calls “carnal” the person who does not conduct his life according to the laws of nature but dwells in evils contrary to nature.
So, the natural man does not want you to harm him, but neither does he harm you. The carnal man not only does not want you to harm him, but also harms you. The spiritual man does not harm you; indeed, if you harm him, he blesses you.
A person must not be like the priest or the Levite; he must be like the Good Samaritan.
He must not say, “What is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours.” Nor must he say, “What is yours is mine, and what is mine is mine.” Instead, he says, “What is mine is yours as well.” This third category belongs to the spiritual person.
Natural people concern themselves with nothing beyond that. They do not harm you; they have a respectable reputation, they are proper and dignified, and so forth. But do not ask them to do good. The others, the carnal people, will harm you and will never do you any good.
The spiritual person, even if you harm him, will not harm you in return; on the contrary, he will do good to you. This third category is guided and filled by the grace of the Holy Spirit. This is how Saint Paul describes them, and this is how they are found in the world. There are three categories of people: the natural, the carnal, and the spiritual.
This is why the grace of the Holy Spirit is indispensable. The more a person sins, the more he drives grace away. He is then left as merely the natural man, with his vices and peculiarities, and he devises his own way of constructing the life he imagines—a Paradise made to his own measure, for himself and for those who think as he does.
It is not only the soul, but also the spiritual gift within it. “And my spirit”—not only my soul, but also this gift that He has given me. And my spirit magnifies His name.
She makes a distinction here; I do not know whether you noticed it. She does not say simply, “was glad,” but “rejoiced exceedingly.” She expresses it in the highest degree—an ecstasy of joy that a person cannot imagine. And truly, if you observe those who have been born again and have preserved that rebirth, they are like little children.
We should not regard them as overly naïve or ridiculous. They are the ones who are always smiling, even amid the most unpleasant circumstances. Though people may regard them as simpletons, they are the ones who have tasted blessedness.
These are the people whom the Holy Spirit possesses, and who truly possess the Holy Spirit as they should. The gift, then, was great, and therefore the exultation was also great—not merely gladness, but exceeding joy.
First she says, “And my spirit has rejoiced exceedingly in God.” Why? And why does she not begin with “in my Savior,” which comes afterward? Why do you begin with God, O Most Holy Theotokos? Because He foreknew her, predestined her, and called her. That is the order; that is the hierarchy.
He was the first to foreknow the Most Holy Theotokos. How do we know that He foreknew her?
The proof is that He spoke of her when there were still only two human beings in the world. And He announced her to Satan. Five thousand five hundred and eight years before the Theotokos appeared upon the scene, He spoke of her. He said to Satan, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed.” What was He saying there in Genesis 3:15? Who was this woman? What was the woman’s seed? Does a woman have seed?
We are speaking of human seed. The woman gives birth, but the man begets. Abraham begot Isaac; Sarah did not beget him. Isaac begot Jacob; Rebecca did not beget him. Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; Rachel did not beget them. The man begets. Why, then, does Scripture speak of the seed of a woman? Who is this woman who would give birth without the seed of a man? She is the Theotokos. Eve thought that she herself would give birth to the one who would avenge the harm Satan had done. For this reason, she named her first child Cain, which means “acquisition.” But what had she acquired? A murderer.
It was another woman; Eve was not that woman. It was the woman of whom the Apostle speaks in Galatians 4:4: “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman”—not of a man, but born of a woman.
But Paul, do we not already know that women give birth? Yes, but these words contain a deeper meaning: “born of a woman.” She was that woman. The Theotokos therefore magnifies God because He foreknew her. And not only did He foreknow her; He also spoke of her there.
And from then on, throughout thousands of years, He continually prefigured her through types and foretold her prophetically.
Saint Paul regarded this as so important—and when we say that it came from Paul, we mean that it came from Christ, because Christ moved Paul’s mouth and stirred his soul—that when he wrote, he presented Christ as without father, without mother, and without genealogy, and as the firstborn Son of God.
I think that, even if you have not read it, you have at least heard it. On the feast days of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Church appoints the epistle reading from Hebrews, specifically from chapter 9, verse 1 and following, which says:
“Now even the first tabernacle had ordinances of worship and an earthly sanctuary. For the first tabernacle was prepared, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the presentation of the loaves; this is called the Holy Place.” This tabernacle, he says, was divided into the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. Beyond the second veil was the inner tabernacle called the Holy of Holies.
“Having the golden censer and the Ark of the Covenant overlaid on all sides with gold.” What does the hymnographer call the Theotokos in the canon? The one whose spirit was made golden. There, the Ark was covered with gold; here, it is her spirit that has been made golden.
“In which was the golden jar containing the manna.” What is the manna? Christ. And what is the jar that bears the manna? The Theotokos. “And Aaron’s rod that had budded,” Saint Paul writes to help his own people understand. What is Aaron’s rod? It is the Virgin who gave birth: a dry rod blossoms, and a virgin gives birth. “And the tablets of the Covenant.” What are the tablets of the Covenant? The Theotokos. What was written upon the tablets? The Word (Logos) of God.
Why do we fast for forty days? What are we to receive? The Word of God made flesh from the Most Holy Virgin. And what did Moses do when he fasted for forty days and forty nights? He received the Word of God upon tablets of stone.
Above the Cherubim, and so forth. All these things were there within the Ark, and Saint Paul brings them forward because they are types of our Most Holy Theotokos.
There you see that God foreknew her; there you see that He prefigured her. And now she cannot but speak of it and thank God first for what He has done. If anyone wishes to study this, let him read the Canon of the Salutations, where the hymnographer brings forward all the types and images of our Most Holy Theotokos.
What is the light cloud that bears the God who is above all? Is it not the Most Holy Theotokos? Read the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah and you will see our Most Holy Theotokos in Egypt. Christ fled there as a little child from before Herod’s sword, and all the idols fell before Him. What was Jacob’s ladder? Was it not the Most Holy Theotokos, through whom Christ descended and through whom we ascend and become gods again by grace? What was the bush that burned without being consumed? Why does our Church place it in the apse on the right side of the church?
What was it, if not the Most Holy Theotokos, who received the fire of the Godhead and was not consumed? What suffered no corruption when the Israelites passed through the Red Sea? It prefigured the nature of her who knew no marriage. What is the mountain not cut by human hands, from which the stone was cut while the mountain remained whole? What does it mean? She gave birth to Christ and remained inviolate, suffering no corruption.
Just as the first Adam brought forth Eve without suffering any corruption, so also Eve brought forth the new Adam without suffering any corruption. What do these things mean? What is the artophorion that we have upon the Holy Altar?
What is it? Is it not the Most Holy Theotokos, who bore the Lord Christ within her? And what is the censer that our priest carries out? Whom does the body of the censer resemble? Does it not resemble our Most Holy Theotokos?
She bears within herself the burning coal, Christ, while the incense signifies the Holy Spirit.
Have you ever read the book I wrote, In the Churches Bless God? Saints, what are all these things that the Church possesses? What do they mean? This is why she says, “My soul magnifies You first, my God. He foreknew me, predestined me, and called me.”
First comes the preparation, and then she turns to Him who came. I should not need to tell you these things; we should all know them. We should know what our faith teaches, so that it may be firmly established and so that we are not easily swayed by every wicked person who comes to speak against the Most Holy Theotokos, or against the divinity of Jesus, or against so many other dogmas held by our Orthodox Church, outside of which there is no salvation. Then she says, “My spirit rejoiced in my Savior,” because the Savior who was to save the world first saved her. In what way was the Theotokos saved? Was it simply because she was good? Because she was sinless? Did she not bear ancestral sin? Did she not need cleansing, at least from ancestral sin? We agree that she had no deliberate sins.
But she did bear ancestral sin. Was she not herself a descendant of Adam and Eve?
If things were as the Papists dogmatically teach, then we would have two sinless persons.
For the Papists have raised her up in their own way and worship her as God. That is the reason. Yet she herself proves them wrong. You know that the Papists do not make the sign of the Cross as we do: confessing the three Persons of the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and the two natures of Jesus.
The God without beginning became man, was taken up in the Ascension, and is coming again. They do not make the sign in this way. They make the sign of the Cross with the whole hand. Although they say they believe in the three Persons of the Godhead, they also treat the Most Holy Theotokos and the Pope as gods—and even reverse the direction of the Cross. But this is not so. The Theotokos herself proves them wrong: “He is my Savior, and I too was saved through Him.”
From what was I saved? From what did He cleanse me? From ancestral sin. When the fire of the Godhead entered within me, it cleansed me.
Saint Gregory the Theologian says:
“Christ was conceived of a Virgin, both in soul and in flesh, she having first been purified by the Spirit.”
When our Christ was conceived by the Theotokos, both her soul and her flesh, having first been purified by the Spirit, were cleansed from ancestral sin.
And Eusebius of Emesa says: “Know, beloved, that no one is without a share in ancestral sin, not even the Virgin who gave birth to God.” But she was cleansed at the moment when the Holy Spirit overshadowed her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” At that moment our Most Holy Theotokos was cleansed from ancestral sin. This is why He is her own Savior—first her Savior, and then our Savior.
And at that moment she magnifies Him, and her spirit rejoices in God because He foreknew her, predestined her, and called her; because in His providence He had already revealed her in sacred history, prefigured her, and foretold her through the prophets. And she said this for all of us as well, so that we too might think in this way about Him who became first the Savior of the Theotokos.
The Theotokos had no deliberate sins—no sins committed by her own will. So many provisions were made for her, and inwardly her disposition was so good, that she was guarded and helped in the Holy of Holies, so that she might remain free from personal sin.
Nevertheless, what she had inherited was cleansed from her at the Annunciation. Cyril of Alexandria, replying to Nestorius, who was insulting the Theotokos, said this: “It is exceedingly audacious to attribute any fault or sin to the Virgin.”
It is very audacious, he tells him, to say that the Theotokos sinned or was at fault in anything. So, as I repeat, she had no sin of her own, apart from the ancestral sin she had inherited—the sin that we leave behind in Baptism.
Many people cannot understand this. That is why they call children “little angels.” They say, “A little angel has gone.” If the child was baptized, it did not depart as a little angel; a little saint departed. God became man, not to make angels, but to make human beings gods by grace.
It is blasphemy to tell a human being that he is an angel or that he is destined to become an angel. Since he has angels as his servants, is he himself going to become an angel?
Do we or do we not have angels ministering to us?
Was Christ crucified for any angel?
Does any angel receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion? No. All these things were done for the human person. Consider how exalted the human person is, and yet, out of false humility, we regard the angels as superior to us.
That is not so. We are higher, provided that we remain in the place given to us after Baptism. For after Baptism, a guardian angel is given to watch over our soul.
Do you ever pray in the evening? At Compline, do you say the prayer to your angel?
“Holy Angel, who stand by my wretched soul and my afflicted life, do not abandon me, a sinner, nor depart from me because of my lack of self-control.” Do you say this? Do you know it? Do you speak with your angel? Or do you imagine that, because you have double-locked the door, you are safe?
The angel guards the soul; other protections are for the body. Locks, the police, and the public prosecutor concern the body. Do you believe that we have had an angel guarding our soul from the day we were baptized? Do you see your angel guarding and protecting you? Do you grieve him, or do you cause him to rejoice? What is your daily conduct, and indeed the whole course of your life? Does your angel stand with his head raised, or with his head hanging down? Repent; change your life; go to Holy Confession, even if you have only one sin. For his head is bowed, and your repentance will give the angels in Heaven cause to rejoice.
There is joy in Heaven over one sinner who repents. A great feast is held when a human being returns, and Heaven rejoices over that person’s return.
The monks say that they will take the place of the fallen order of angels.
Human beings will become gods by grace, though people do not understand this. They will become saints. You become saints, not angels. Yet because monks live in celibacy, the monastic way of life resembles the life of the angels. For this reason the monastic schema is called the angelic schema, and also because it was given by an angel to Saint Pachomius.
“Pachomius, in this schema shall all flesh be saved.” This does not mean that human beings will become angels by nature. Take care to understand: they are to become gods by grace. “I said, you are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.” It divinizes the body, it divinizes the spirit, and it wondrously nourishes the nous, the spiritual intellect.
Does the faithful Christian not say this after receiving Holy Communion? He must therefore understand it.
Since he has angels and archangels as his helpers, what is the human person’s destiny? He must take this truth deeply into himself and stand upright in the dignity of his calling.
She bore ancestral sin, though she had no deliberate sins. That is why she calls Him her Savior: He is, above all, her Savior. The Church teaches that she inherited ancestral sin as a human being; she was not immaculately conceived or anything of that sort.
At the sacred Proskomide, a portion is taken out for her.
You will know that upon the holy diskos, besides the Lamb, who is Christ, the place on the right is given to the Most Holy Theotokos. And those of you who bake or buy prosphora will have seen the seal impressed upon them—though sometimes the seal on bread bought from the bakery is scarcely visible.
There is the letter theta on a raised triangular section, with the inscription “Theotokos.” This is the portion of our Most Holy Theotokos. It is removed and placed at the right hand of the Lord, where she is now, after her translation to Heaven, and where David beheld her prophetically, as he tells us in Psalm 44: “The queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in gold and arrayed in many colors,” and so forth.
These are the words the priest says when he removes the portion for our Most Holy Theotokos during the Proskomedia, in the morning at church. The Church continues to pray for the person of the Theotokos to this very day. And when the precious Gifts are changed and the prayer is offered, for whom is this sacrifice made?
For Patriarchs, Prophets, Fathers, Apostles, Evangelists, ascetics, and every righteous spirit made perfect in faith. Then the priest proclaims aloud: “Especially for our Most Holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.”
It is offered also for the Most Holy Ever-Virgin. For she too was human. She was human, and to this day a portion is removed for her in the Church. And the portion of our Most Holy Theotokos is placed into the blood of the Lamb in the holy chalice.
The moon will never attain to the sun, just as the stars will never attain to the moon. And just as the material world and its order contain the moon, the sun, and the stars, so too there is the spiritual Sun, Christ; the spiritual Moon, our Most Holy Theotokos; and the spiritual stars, the Saints. None can attain to the rank of another.
And they all receive their light from Christ. Whatever radiance our Most Holy Theotokos possesses, she possesses by the power of Him who dwelt within her; and whatever the stars are, they are so by the power of the sun. Therefore all glory, honor, and worship belong to Christ.
Let the Protestants accuse us of worshiping the Saints. Let the Jehovah’s Witnesses accuse us. No—the Orthodox Church teaches no such thing. “Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who works miracles through you.” The glory is not given to you, Saint Nektarios of Aegina.
Nor to you, Saint Paraskevi. “Glory to Him who crowned you.” Who crowned you? Who works through you? Christ. Therefore glory, honor, and worship belong to Christ. Let those poor people accuse us; they do not know how to read. Malice and pride prevent them from seeing what the Church says and how she expresses it, and so they reject these things.
This is a grave error. And as you know, even some Orthodox Christians reject the Saints and the miracles that Christ continues to work through them. Orthodox—Orthodox with impressive labels—yet they reject the miracles and reject the Saints.
And by rejecting the miracles and the Saints, they reject Christ, who performs the miracles and to whom the Saints belong. You understand, then, how such a person may be described. In any case, the point is that there is a reason moving the Most Holy Theotokos to say these words.
And she says it: Why do you magnify God? Why do you magnify the Savior? “Because He has looked upon the humility of His handmaiden.”
It is because of what He did for me: He cast a gracious gaze upon me; He inclined His eyes even toward me. Where did He find me? In Second Chronicles it says that the eye of God ranges throughout the earth, so that He may show Himself strong on behalf of the one whose heart is perfect toward Him.
Think of that. God, it says, ranges throughout the whole earth so that He may show Himself strong—that is, so that He may help the one whose heart is perfect toward Him. Picture your heart as a mirror placed beneath the sun. It reflects the sun; but if you cover that mirror, it will possess only as much radiance as the uncovered part facing the sun. Unfortunately, our hearts are not mirrors, and the sun is not reflected within them.
Some of us have left only a small part for God, while the rest is covered by this world—by idols, fashion, self-interest, the ego, and every kind of carnal and worldly sin. It is covered over, with a black background.
It is like the eclipses of the sun or moon that we sometimes observe, or like looking at them through a dirty, darkened pane of glass, as scientists advise us to do so that we do not damage our eyes. That is how it is.
But she sees the matter differently.
Do you not see her say, “Because He has looked upon the humility of His handmaiden”? She was the woman, the maiden, the human being who gave her whole heart completely. And when God sees a heart that is perfect and wholly surrendered, He looks upon it; all the light pours into it.
Should this not be a consolation to us—that He looked upon her, and also what I quoted to you from Chronicles?
He could have made another creation and begun again from the beginning. But no. He found this family and determined that it must not be swept away. This man must not be punished and disappear; his name must be preserved. So He instructs Noah, saying, “You must do this and this, because you must not be destroyed.” Then He is about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. The sin of sodomy had reached Heaven. The Sodomites and Gomorrahites even sought to violate the angels through sodomy.
Things can be even worse. Read the first chapter of Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Romans and see what he writes about the Romans. Open the first chapter and look at the sins described there. They are sins of the flesh before which even an angel covers his head.
The guardian angel cannot bear to look upon sin, whether it is between a man and a woman or between a man and a man. Yet even then, amid that entire corrupt world, God intervenes once more and leads Lot’s family out.
There you are: prepare to leave; you must not be destroyed. “How did You find me?” “My eye ranges over the earth, and I see those who are Mine. I see who My people are.” That is why a believer must never be afraid of anything.
Christ has the power to preserve him, just as He preserved the burning bush intact even though it was engulfed in flames. And just as He preserved the Theotokos intact, even though she received the fire of the Godhead, which destroyed nothing in her.
And we know so many other miracles: how He led the Israelites through on dry ground, how He preserved the three youths in the fiery furnace, and Daniel in the lions’ den. He is the same—this is the very same God.
When such humility and fear of God are present before Him, God looks upon them, and through these simple people something great and glorious is brought forth and revealed. And so she concludes here by saying, “For He has looked upon the humility of His handmaiden.” That is why “my soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced.”
My beloved, humility is a profound subject. Christ Himself first revealed it to us: He humbled Himself; He emptied Himself in kenosis, taking the form of a servant. Then comes the Most Holy Theotokos, who also manifested this one great virtue, and through it became, by the grace of God, all that she became.
But this is a subject that would take us quite some time. Allow me to stop here, and, God willing and by His grace, we shall continue in our next talk.
Η ερμηνεία, η βασιλεία του Θεού εντός η μόνη στη Δεν είναι αυτή, ότι έχουμε τη Βασιλεία μέσα μας. Η ερμηνεία του εδαφίου εκείνου είναι: Η Βασιλεία του Θεού μεταξύ σας είναι. Πώς έρχεται, λέει, η Βασιλεία;
Βρίσκουν λύσεις εκεί που δεν μπορούσαν να βρούνε. Βλέπουν εκείνα που δεν έβλεπαν. Μισούν εκείνα που αγαπούσαν και αγαπούν εκείνα που μισούσαν. Ποιος τα έκανε αυτά τα πράγματα; Ποιος έκανε όλη αυτή την αλλαγή;
Έχει εκείνο που έχει ο άλλος που διετήρησε την καθαρότητα του βαπτίσματός του; Στην ίδια πνευματική κατάσταση είναι αυτός που ζει εν τη αμαρτία, εν τη αμετανοησία, μακριά από την Εκκλησία, κυλιόμενος εδώ από τη σάρκα του, από τον κόσμο, από τις ηδονές του;
Αυτός το πρώτον την προγνώρισε την Υπεραγία της Θεοτόκου Πού σου βγαίνει ότι την προγνώρισε;
Απόδειξη είναι ότι μήνυσε περί αυτής, όταν υπήρχαν δύο άνθρωποι ακόμη στον κόσμο. Και ο σατανάς εμήνυσε περί της Θεοτόκου. 5.508 χρόνια πριν έρθει η Θεοτόκος επί σκηνής, ομίλησε περί αυτής. Όταν είπε στον Σατανά «Εχθρανθήσω αναμέσον σου και του σπέρματός σου και του σπέρματος της γυναικός και του σπέρματος αυτής» Τι έλεγε εκεί πέρα στη Γέννηση ΓΑΜΑ 15 Ποια ήταν η γυναίκα αυτή; Ποιο ήταν το σπέρμα της γυναικός; Έχει σπέρμα η γυναίκα;
Ποια είναι η νεφέλη κούφη που φέρνει τον υπέρ Θεό, δεν γίνει υπεραγία Θεοτόκου. Για βάσε στο 19ο κεφάλαιο του Ησαΐου να ιδείτε την Παναγία μας στην Αίγυπτο. Ο Χριστός που έφυγε εκεί και κατέπεσαν τα πάντα, όταν εδιώχθη από προσώπου μαχαίρας Ηρώδου ο Κύριός μας μικρός. Τι ήταν η σκάλα του Ιακώβ; Δεν ήταν η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος, δι’ ης κατέβη ο Χριστός και διά της οποίας ανεβαίνουμε εμείς και ξαναγινόμαστε θεοί; Τι ήταν η βάτος η καιομένη και μη καταφλεγομένη; Γιατί η Εκκλησία μας την τοποθετεί στη δεξιά αψίδα μέσα στο ναό;
Όπως ο Αδάμ ο πρώτος έδωσε την Εύα και δεν υπέστη καμίαν φθορά. Έτσι και ακριβώς η Εύα έδωσε τον Αδάμ, τον καινούριον, και δεν υπέστη καμίαν φθορά. Τι είναι αυτά τα πράγματα; Τι είναι το αρτοφόριον που έχουμε εμείς επάνω στην Αγία Τράπεζα;
Τι είναι; Δεν είναι η Περαγία Θεοτόκος η θέρουσα μέσα των Κυρίων η μόνη του Χριστών Τι είναι το θημιατήριο που βγαίνει ο ιερέψε μας τη μοιάζει η κοιλία του θημιατήριου Δεν είναι ο Κύριος ημών; Δεν είναι η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος;
Είναι βλασφημία να λες στον άνθρωπο ότι είναι άγγελος και ότι προορίζεται να γίνει άγγελος. Εφόσον έχει αγγέλους υπηρέτες, άγγελος θα γίνει;
Έχουμε ή δεν έχουμε αγγέλους υπηρέτες;
Εσταυρώθη ο Χριστός για κανέναν άγγελο;
Προσεύχεστε καμιά φορά το βράδυ; Στο απόδειπνο λέτε την προσευχή του Αγγέλου σας;
Άγιε Άγγελε, ο εφεστώς της αθλίας μου ψυχής και ταλαιπώρου μου ζωής. Μην καταλήψεις με το αμαρτωλόμιδα αποστήσαμε Το λέτε αυτό; Το ξέρετε; Μιλάτε με τον Άγγελό σας; Ή έχετε γνώμη ότι διπλοκλειδώσατε την πόρτα και είστε ασφαλισμένοι;
τα οποία λέγει ο Ιερεύς όταν βγάζει τη μερίδα της Παναγίας μας κατά την ώρα της προσκομιδής, το πρωί στην εκκλησία. Ε, για αυτό το πρόσωπο της Θεοτόκου δέεται μέχρι σήμερον η Εκκλησία μας. Και όταν γίνει η μετουσίωση των τιμίων δώρων και γίνει η ευχή, για ποιους γίνεται αυτή η θυσία;
