Summary
Christ’s calming of the storm reveals both his true humanity, shown in his sleep, and his divinity, shown in his command over the wind and water. The lecture warns that demonic influence is not limited to visible possession but also operates when people habitually reject God and follow sinful desires. The hearer is urged to study Scripture, reject occult practices, repent, confess, receive Holy Communion, and remain with Christ so that earthly life may lead into Paradise rather than condemnation.

In this series of talks we have been giving here, it seems that this evening we should speak about a miracle Christ performed near the borders of Tiberias—specifically, when He crossed from Galilee to the opposite shore, to the region known as Gadara. I do not know whether you have been there or can picture exactly where it is. This event is recorded by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke.
Chapter eight, verse twenty-six and following. It says: “Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.” He sailed away from Galilee and crossed into the country of the Gadarenes, where the events described afterward took place. But something very important had happened, and although it is not part of tonight’s passage, allow me to borrow it. It says: “Now it happened on one of those days that He got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’” Here was Galilee, and they crossed from there toward Gadara. “And they launched out. But as they sailed, He fell asleep.” That is, while the boat was carrying them across, Christ fell asleep in the boat. Saint Theophylact says plainly, “He fell asleep,” and then “a windstorm came down”—what we would call a sudden violent storm upon the lake.
The lake is surrounded by mountains, and a violent windstorm came down upon it. The boat began filling with water, and they were in danger of sinking. So they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Wake up—we are lost! Then He arose and rebuked the wind.
He rebuked the wind and the raging waves, commanding the storm to cease. They stopped, and there was a calm. Then He said to them:
“Where is your faith?” And they were afraid and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!” I want to dwell on the point where it says that they went and woke Christ. When did they do so? When they were in danger of drowning. Does Christ ever sleep now? No. Yet to many people it seems that Christ is sleeping and supposedly does not know what is happening to us—what has happened at home, at work, or on the road. Well then, go and wake Him, so that He may set things in order for you. If you see no sign of Him anywhere, if you do not see the hand of God,
then wake Him. In other words, speak to Him. Pray. Tell Him, “This and this is happening.” Unfortunately, we do not wake Christ, and that is precisely why we see no results and receive no help. We think we can solve our problems by ourselves, and we often rely on our own abilities, our connections, our influence, our education, our learning, and so forth. Go and wake Christ if you want the storm in your life to subside—if you want the raging waves, the earthquake, the whirlwind that suddenly arose in your work to cease,
or in your health, your children, or wherever it may be. He alone can calm things and restore peace along the course of your life. We would be greatly edified if we read how spiritual people conduct themselves and then put into praxis, the active ascetic life, what they did. This is one such deed. Christ does not sleep now; and even then, as God, He did not sleep, though as man He slept. As man He slept, and as God He said, “Peace, be still.” No human being can command the sea and its raging waves to stop. God can do that. This reveals His two natures: He was God
and man. This event, then, took place in the boat as they crossed from Galilee toward distant Gadara. In any case, I have told you what happened beforehand because I believe it may benefit someone who cannot resolve the problems of his life: turn to Christ, wake Him, go and knock at His door. A poor fellow once said, “Where are you going, George, where are you going?” “Where am I going? I am going to break down God’s door.” What did he mean? “I am going to tell Him to take charge of my case; I will break down His door.” “And what if He is not inside?” God has never ceased to be inside. Is God merely a man? He is always there, and we must remain outside His door, knocking with patient endurance and humility,
asking Him to take charge of our case. And indeed, many people who have humbly asked Him to take charge of their concern—whether personal, family-related, business-related, or anything else—have never been put to shame. Test what I am telling you, and it will serve you throughout your life if you do not already know it. In any case, “when He stepped out on the land”—when they had crossed over and He set foot, as we say, on the other side—“there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. He wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice.” In plain words, when they crossed over,
they saw a naked man, ragged and unclothed, who did not live in a house but among the tombs. He was possessed by demons, you see, and the demon would not allow his nous, his spiritual intellect, to remain balanced or let him act as a person of sound judgment would. He was beside himself; someone else had taken the helm. It says that he cried out to Jesus and, in a loud voice, this naked man said: “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” This was a demonic confession of the divinity of Jesus. Jehovah’s Witnesses say that Christ is not God. Take care, lest the devil burn you tomorrow. Here Satan himself says that He is the Son of God.
You and I cannot claim to have an opinion more correct, better, or sounder than the devil’s. Satan remembers something of what has happened over roughly eight thousand years, while I am a man of yesterday. Here he says to Him: “What have I to do with You?” Why have You appeared here? What business do You have here? “Jesus, Son of the Most High God, I beg You, do not torment me.” Satan thus acknowledges Christ’s superiority and begs Him not to torment him. What is that torment? To send him into the Abyss and bind him. That is the torment: to be sent into the Abyss before the appointed time. Satan therefore admits that one day Christ will send him into the Abyss and bind him, so that he will no longer be able to act and will no longer be free.
He will be cast into Tartarus in the fullest sense of the word. But for now he asks not to be sent there, because Christ “had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him.” Christ knew that this unclean spirit had been in the man for many years and had tormented him, and He commanded it to come out and leave the man at last. Yet Satan begs Him, acknowledging Him as the Son of the Most High God, not to drive him out and not to send him into the Abyss before the appointed time. In other words, Satan asks not to go where he is already sending us, for he sends us toward the Abyss even now.
If I live according to Satan’s desires, thoughts, and promptings, and I die at this very hour, I go straight to Hell. Satan does not go to Hell yet. He will go to Hell; for now he is free. He will go there at the Second Coming. But because he could not read Christ’s nous and did not know whether Christ intended to bind him, he begged Him not to do it. Here, then, Christ’s almighty power is revealed, and Satan himself acknowledges it. Satan is shown to be an unclean spirit, just as the text calls him. He opposes the works of God, and the evil spirit often becomes a tyrant over a human being. Many people suffer.
They may show no outward signs of demonic possession, because Satan acts upon people in various ways. The possessed are not only those who fall to the ground and foam at the mouth, climb onto the roofs of their houses, are bound with chains, or are confined in asylums or neurological and psychiatric clinics. There are many well-dressed people wearing ties who do nothing outwardly insane, yet are driven and carried about by the evil spirit. You should know this. And often we speak very thoughtlessly. Someone asks, “How are things at home?” and we answer, “Glory to God, all is well.” Why are you glorifying God, and in what sense is all well?
Is it simply because you are not bedridden? Do your family members go to Church? Do your children go to Church? Do they remain close to Christ? Are they morally upright? If they are unmarried, do they preserve their virginity? In what sense is all well? Are they shrewish or blasphemous? Do you accept the children God gives you, or do you dispose of them down the drain or avoid having them? In what sense is all well? What does this goodness consist of, when you say, “Glory to God, all is well”? We say it from habit, but the words have no content. Many people plainly do what Satan wants rather than what God wants. Those who do what he wants are under Satan’s influence, regardless of whether he is actually within them,
or whether they are behind bars or bound in chains. Once, a rather thoughtless man found himself in Corfu and passed by the asylum there. The less severely ill patients were out in the courtyard at the time, warming themselves in the sun. It was the hour when they were permitted some freedom. The man approached the wire fence and naively asked whether there were many people inside. One of the patients replied, “Most of you are outside.” And he spoke a truth. Those who display the obvious signs of a lunatic or a person possessed by demons are few, and they are the ones bound behind bars.
There are many more outside. When a man feels no need to attend Church and curses the priest because he hears him ringing the bell in the morning and it disturbs him—because he has only just returned from his mistress, from gambling, from an illicit embrace, or from I do not know where—and when others refuse to have children, refuse to fast, do not go to Church, do not pray, and so forth, who benefits from this whole manner of life? Satan does. Such a spirit exists in many people, and they plainly do Satan’s will. Yet here Satan acknowledges Christ’s authority and says, “Do not send me into the Abyss before my appointed time.”
Therefore, Satan will go into the Abyss one day. He confesses this himself. Consequently, all who listen to Satan will go there as well. “Depart into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” We are his angels in that sense. He is the leader, and we are the little ones, his lackeys. Whatever he says, we do. There is your company, then. Since torment awaits him—“I beg You, do not torment me”—we too will be tormented; and for as long as Satan is tormented, we shall be tormented as well. There is also something else here that is terrifying.
This young man, it says, had been bound with chains and driven by the demon into the wilderness. Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Legion.” Do you know what “Legion” means? Six thousand demons. The Foreign Legion numbered six thousand; there were a legion of demons upon him, “because many demons had entered him.” And they begged Him not to command them—not him, but them, the demons—to depart into the Abyss. “Do not say the word and send us into Hell now.”
This is why, it says, people who do not read and study the Scriptures go astray, for they could have learned many things and guarded against them. Many of us will suffer in eternity because, while here, we refused to take heed of this third person. For the most part, we look only at ourselves, and some of us also speak about God. But we do not speak about the devil—about the existence of another person who plots against man and is his constant enemy. He never sleeps, never eats meat, never commits fornication, never commits adultery, and never kills his children, yet he will be condemned to Hell. And this person seeks the destruction of mankind day and night. You understand, then, how carefully a person must think in such a situation.
So Satan himself says, “Do not command us to go into the Abyss; do not give the order.” Then you believe that Christ is greater than you? Yes, the devil believes that Christ is greater than he is, while man refuses to believe that Christ is greater than he is and instead sides with the devil. How foolish man is! Your own master says that he is weaker than Christ; why, then, do you refuse to admit it, O man? And since Satan says, “Do not send me away; do not command me to depart into the Abyss,” how can you say that there is no Hell and no Abyss, and that Hell and Paradise are supposedly here on earth? How will you prove Satan wrong?
Satan knows whether Hell and Paradise exist. As I said before, would a spirit eight thousand years old not know? How could he not know? And do I know better? Is my claim true—that Hell is here and Paradise is here? Or people ask, “Who has ever come back from there?” There is the devil, who has been both there and here. What better witness do you want? Do you want a better witness than the devil? Even from a hostile witness, you can learn the truth to the contrary. My beloved, Hell and Paradise are not here in the sense that the world claims. But Hell begins here, and Paradise also begins here. Whatever spiritual state death finds a person in, that will be his state in eternity.
If death finds a person living with Christ in this world, the continuation of that life will be Paradise. If it finds him living with Satan in this world, its continuation will be Hell. Therefore, Hell begins here, and Paradise begins here. The camera lens of death captures a person wherever it finds him, and that is how he will remain in eternity. If it finds me in metanoia, in Holy Confession, with the fear of God, having received Holy Communion, living watchfully, and so forth, then my continuation will lead to salvation. But if it finds me blasphemous, unrepentant, unconfessed, indifferent, unjust, adulterous, sexually immoral, deceitful, or whatever else, then my continuation will be Hell, because these are the slogans of the other leader.
They do not belong to the great Leader, Christ; they belong to the enemy, and man sides with the enemy rather than with Christ. From all this, then, it is shown that the devil exists and that he acknowledges Christ as greater than himself. Secondly, it is shown that Hell exists, awaiting Satan himself, and that in this instance he begs Christ not to send him there. In other words, with a single word Christ could have cast Satan into Tartarus. Some people are shocked by what I have said—and I mentioned this once before while speaking here. They ask, “With the word ‘Legion,’ could there really be so many demons—”
“—inside one man? Where could so many demons fit?” And once, if I remember correctly, I told you something an elder said to a doctor while they were returning by ship from Tinos one night. They boarded the ship at Tinos in the evening and were due to disembark around dawn, perhaps here in Athens. Those were the old ships, which took seven, eight, or ten hours to make a journey that now takes three or four. The elder, a devout man, had gone to venerate the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos and was on his way home. On board he spoke about various matters of faith, while several other passengers traveling toward Piraeus gathered around him and listened.
He spoke at length about the soul, the truth of the Gospel, how a person ought to live, and many other things. Among those listening was a young doctor, who stood nearby and listened to the elder. At one point he interrupted him and said, “Old man, do you not think you have told these gentlemen a great many fairy tales?”
That was certainly not the right way for the doctor to address him. In any case, the elder turned and asked, “What do you mean by that, my child?” “All these things you have been telling the people here about the soul, about Satan, and so on—where did you get them?” “But they are written in the Gospel. What do you do for a living?” He replied, “I am a doctor.”
“You are a doctor, so you ought to know. These things are written in the Gospel. You studied your science, but you did not study the Gospel; therefore, you have accomplished nothing—you have failed.” The doctor said, “But how can I believe the things written in the Gospel? Let me give you just one example.” The elder replied, “Go on, then. Tell me where the Gospel says anything strange.” “Does it not say that one man had a legion of demons—that is, six thousand demons?” “It does.” “Well, can your mind accept such a number? Can six thousand demons fit inside one man?” “Is that what scandalizes you? My child, they fit in my mind, even if they do not fit in yours. But allow me to answer you in the morning, when we reach Piraeus.”
The elder told him, “I shall lie down here. I have no berth inside, so this is where you will find me. Come by in the morning as we approach Piraeus, and I shall tell you the answer then, while the question is still fresh in your mind.” “Very well,” said the doctor. He thought to himself that the elder was trying to avoid the question. He left, while the elder continued speaking with the others. In any case, the elder did not forget the doctor. When they were approaching Piraeus the next morning and the city lay before them, the doctor appeared with one or two friends. “Come,” he said, “let us hear the elder’s theory.” They came over, along with the people who had listened the night before and some others. Quite a crowd gathered to hear the elder prove that six thousand demons could fit inside a man. So the elder said to the—
—doctor, “Doctor, can you tell me approximately how many houses you can see here, from Kokkinia across Piraeus as far as Hatzikyriakio?” “What sort of question is that?” “I am asking you. It is an old man’s question. Show me some respect and answer it.” “There may be about a hundred thousand,” he replied. “Indeed? Close one eye,” said the elder. “Now how many are there?” “The same number,” the doctor answered. “So a hundred thousand houses—with their roof tiles, chimneys, stairways, and everything else—can fit inside your eye, yet six thousand demons, who are spirits, cannot fit inside a man?”
“Doctor, how do all those houses fit inside your eye? You look at them, you say there are a hundred thousand, and a hundred thousand fit there. Is it not a mystery how a hundred thousand houses can fit inside your eye—the houses you see as the whole of Piraeus lies before you? Is this some theatrical illusion? Go about your work,” the elder told him, “and be careful.” The doctor was speechless. And how am I supposed to correct this unbelief?
It has passed through the hands of many unbelievers, many hard-hearted atheists, and no one has corrected it. Shall I correct it today? These things are not corrected in that way. Man is called to believe them, and woe to the one who does not. Therefore, when you look at a person, do not assume that he is under the influence of only one demon; often he is under the influence of many. Some people insult another person—a child, perhaps—by calling him the name of an animal or something similar. That is not right. An animal never sinks beneath the purpose for which it was created. It is man who sinks—
—beneath his purpose. In trying to present himself as superhuman, he becomes less than human. An animal has one particular characteristic. The fox, for example, is cunning. The passage then says, “Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain.” Nearby there was a herd of swine grazing. Do you know what a herd means? A great many pigs. And they begged Him—Christ. It was not Satan alone who begged Him; the demons begged Him.
They begged Him to permit them to enter the swine, to grant them leave. This means that Satan cannot enter even a pig by his own power, unless he receives permission. If Satan were able and free to do whatever he wished, not one of us would be here at this moment. I would not be speaking to you, and you would not be listening. He would have blown us all to pieces. Nothing would remain here—not a person, a chair, a lectern, or anything else. He does not possess that right. Even if he is ever granted the right, the permission, to harm a person—for he is sadistic—
—to make him ill, cause him some injury, or bring about an accident, even that harm remains within set limits. Did you receive the talk about Job? Did you listen to it? Have you heard the talk about Job? The devil asked permission to attack Job, and at first God granted him power over Job’s family and possessions. “You shall not touch Job himself,” He said, and the devil did not touch him. He killed his children, demolished the houses, had the flocks stolen, caused the animals to die, and killed the servants, but he did not touch Job. The second time, he received further permission. “I permit you to strike him,” God said, “but not his soul.” And then we see Job suddenly covered with sores from head to toe, scraping himself with a potsherd for seven whole years. But his soul—no. “Why, then, Lord, do You not hand over his soul as well?” “How could I judge him if I handed his soul over to you? If he himself wishes to give you his soul, let him do so. I permit him to fall ill and suffer harm. I permit this so that it may be revealed who he truly is. Is he good and close to Me only when everything goes well for him? Let Me see whether he remains the same when everything turns against him. But his soul—no.” We see, therefore, that God grants—
—Satan permission to afflict man only within limits. Here, then, the demons ask Christ for permission. “Permit us,” they say, “if You cast us out...” They cannot read His mind. Will He cast them out or not? They do not know what He will do. “If You cast us out, we beg You to permit us to enter the swine.” There is also an indirect lesson here. Man often descends to the level of the swine. The swine is the type, the symbolic image, of carnal people—the sexually immoral, adulterers, gluttons, and so forth. The common saying and popular description is, “Look at him—he is like a pig.”
Even to enter such a person and remain within him, Satan must receive permission from Christ. From outside, he hurls suggestions at him: “Do this, do that, go to that woman, go with that man,” and so forth. Man carries them out on the devil’s behalf, and the two will go together into Hell. But for Satan to enter, remain permanently, and make that person possessed—a terror to the neighborhood and so forth—permission is required. He cannot do it on his own. That is why we see many people living very wicked lives and say, “How has this man not yet become possessed? He still walks around, speaks normally, and sometimes even says something good.” Yes, because Satan does not dwell permanently within him; he has not taken complete control of the reins of his soul. Deep inside, the man himself still remains.
So he may still say something right and do something right. Here we see Satan’s weakness: whether he enters or does not enter, whether he goes out or does not go out, is not in his own power. At the same time, we see his inability to read Christ’s mind. And I wonder how so many men and women go to the devil to learn what is going to happen, what they should do in a certain situation, and so forth. All these mediums and similar people are his haunts. Do not be taken in by talk of psychic research and other nonsense. These are Satan’s haunts. If someone who goes there is truly faithful, the medium will not even be able to open his mouth or utter a word; he will drive that person away at once. But because we do not believe in Christ, we descend to such people and seek from them the solution to our problems. If demons could solve people’s problems, every problem would already have been solved. Do demons not know about crimes? In many cases, they themselves incited people to commit them. Do they not know who committed them, where the culprits are, who stole, and who killed? Of course they know. Why, then, do mediums, the police, and the rest not discover these things through them? Because Christ forbids Satan to reveal them. He cannot disclose anything without permission. That is the reason. Otherwise, it would not serve his interests. Does Satan not know everything that is happening outside at this moment? Of course he does.
One demon watches me here, while another watches outside. If the one outside sees a Saint or an Angel approaching, he will warn the one here: “Danger—run!” and he will flee. Satan cannot see both here and outside at the same time. He is not omnipresent. Omnipresence belongs only to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Satan, the angels, and the Saints exist in a particular place and time. They are here now, not there; or there, not here. The same demon who is tempting me now, trying to confuse me, distract my nous, and keep me from speaking correctly, cannot also be tempting my wife at home. No. He will tempt either me or her. Another demon will go there. And if he wants to watch—
—what is happening outside to some extent, he will station another, lesser demon there as a lookout. Then he will be warned that the Archangel who is here, or Saint Barbara, is approaching, and he will flee. This is how you should understand Satan. Here we see that he does not have the power to read Christ’s mind. He says, in effect, “If You are going to send us away, do not send us there. If You cast us out, we beg You, do not send us into the Abyss; let us go into the pigs, into the herd of swine.” And Christ permitted them to go. From this, then, it follows that Satan cannot read the nous of God or the nous of man. He works out what a person is thinking from the surrounding circumstances. He does not know the person’s thoughts directly; he infers them from his actions and from his anxiety.
He draws his conclusions from the person’s anxiety and uneasiness. For example, I know that my child usually comes home at two or ten past two in the afternoon. If he has not come by a quarter past two or twenty past, the logismoi—the intrusive thoughts—begin. They say: “What happened? Why hasn’t he come? Did the car break down? Was he hurt somewhere?” Half past two comes, and he is still not there. Then twenty to three, and still nothing. I telephone, but I cannot reach anyone. Terror begins. Now you picture the child in the emergency room. In your imagination, you see him lying injured somewhere, or even dead, and so on. That is the devil’s work. He casts these thoughts into you. He sees your anguish, sees you going to the window, sees you picking up the telephone, calling people, and asking questions. He hears and sees all these things.
Then he comes and puts his own thoughts into you, driving you to despair—utter despair. Yet perhaps nothing at all has happened. A tire may have gone flat just a short distance from home, or the child may be sitting somewhere talking with a friend. Meanwhile, Satan has set you ablaze inside because you accepted the thoughts he cast into you, thoughts he formed from your movements and your anxiety. A person must know what Satan can and cannot do, so that he may turn to prayer. When you raise your hands in prayer, or kneel and say, “My Most Holy Theotokos, help me now,” he immediately withdraws; he cannot remain beside you. You then begin to pray. And it is good not to
pray aloud, but inwardly, saying within yourself whatever you wish, so that Satan does not hear it. If he hears, he takes corresponding measures, lays suitable traps, and keeps the person in anxiety. If you read the Life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ, you will find that once the young Epiphanios—who later became the great Epiphanios—was speaking with Saint Andrew. At one point Saint Andrew warned him about speaking aloud. Saint Andrew could see Satan standing a little way off, straining to hear
what they were discussing so that he could build his schemes accordingly. He said to Epiphanios, “Speak quietly.” The child could not see Satan, but Saint Andrew, whose eyes were purified, could see him. So he told him, “Quietly, so that Satan does not hear.” A person should not speak aloud, because the devil takes what he hears and builds corresponding obstacles for him, or frustrates his plans, and so forth. If possible, one should pray inwardly. “With groanings which cannot be uttered”—what does Paul say in Romans? A person should groan inwardly and speak within himself to his God. No other creature possesses this gift. The human person alone has the privilege of speaking with God without uttering a word. Somewhere in the Old Testament,
though the passage escapes me at the moment, God says to Moses, “Why do you cry out to Me?” Moses had not opened his mouth or said anything. Yet within himself he was speaking with God. God said, “Why do you cry out to Me?” His prayer reached God immediately, and God addressed him: “Why are you crying out? What do you wish to tell Me? What is it that you are saying?” Satan, then, cannot read the human nous, the spiritual intellect. He does take precautions, of course, and this is why a person should pray inwardly. Then Satan cannot draw near to him. Some people say, “But if I do not say aloud, ‘My Most Holy Theotokos, help me; my Lord, help me,’ so that Satan can hear that I am calling upon Christ, the Theotokos, and the Saints, how will he flee?”
This was the question of a monk of our own time, who may still be alive, since he was younger than I am. He wondered how Satan perceives a person’s noetic prayer and withdraws, since he does not have the power to read the person’s inner spirit. Then a Saint appeared to him in a dream and said, “Niko”—that was his name—“there are three matters troubling you.” I do not remember what the other two were. “The first has this answer, and the second has this answer.” But I remember the third, and I will tell it to you. She said, “You also wonder
how Satan knows when a person is praying noetically, since he does not possess this power. It belongs to God alone to know what each person is saying inwardly. Listen, then, Niko. This is like a stove burning wood inside. You cannot see the fire, but its heat drives you back and burns you when you draw near. Exactly the same thing happens with a person who prays. Whether he is walking along the road, washing the dishes, shopping,
lying down, or doing anything else, he says inwardly, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. My Most Holy Theotokos, have mercy on me.” When Satan approaches, he is burned, because through prayer the person is inwardly united with God. Just as you perceive from the heat of the stove that there is warmth and fire within it, so Satan approaches the person. He cannot see your prayer, but he is burned and withdraws.” My dear people, we should have learned these things in the earliest years of our lives, from the time we came out of the baptismal font and began to grow. Our parents and godparents should not merely have given us balls and whistles. No.
They should have taught us the wiles of Satan and instructed us in the matters of our faith. And woe on the Day of Judgment to those godparents who did not instruct the children they baptized, unless they repent and make their confession. You know the folk verse that says: “Godmother, I return the child to you baptized, chrismated, and entrusted to God. Guard the child from fire and precipice until the age of twelve.” Should she not guard the child after that? Is she to guard the child only until twelve? And then will I come and teach him the words I spoke at his Baptism: “Do you renounce Satan, all his pomp, and his worship?” Yet the godmother or godfather did not even understand those words, did not truly say them, and has no intention of teaching them.
This is precisely how we send another person to the devil. And then, if we are asked whether we blaspheme, we have the audacity to say, “No, Father. Now and then I only say, ‘Go to the devil.’” Do you understand what it means to send another person to the devil? You blaspheme Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, and God—you blaspheme everything, leaving nothing untouched. For all these things were given to rescue the human person from the devil. Great Friday, the Precious Cross, and Christ becoming man—all were for the sake of rescuing man from the devil, to whom you are now sending him. This curse therefore contains every blasphemy. There is no greater blasphemy than sending another person to the devil. And it is more than blasphemy; it is a wish. You may not directly name the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, or the others, but you are making a wish. You are saying, “Satan, I am sending you my mother-in-law. I am sending you my child. I am sending you my wife.”
You are wishing Satan well; you are sending him human beings. You become Satan’s agent, working to enlarge his kingdom and diminish God’s. This is not merely blasphemy; it is a wish: “May your kingdom grow. I am sending you my own family, my tools, my animal. I am sending you this one and that one and another.” It is different in form from directly blaspheming Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Saints, or the Precious Cross. Do you understand? In any case, “they begged Him to permit them to enter into them”—that is, into the swine—“and He permitted them.” Go, then. He did not command them to enter; He permitted them. In other words: “You must come out of this man. Whether you enter there or not is your concern. You are begging to enter them, so enter. I am not commanding you to enter. What concerns Me is that you come out of this man. Where you go afterward is your affair.”
“Come out”—that is what concerns Him. “Then the demons came out”—notice the plural; it was not one demon. Here is the explanation of the word “Legion.” “The demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.” That is, they drove the pigs into the water, and the pigs drowned. The demons did not drown. They are spirits, and a spirit cannot drown. In the same way, demons throw many possessed people into fire, over cliffs, or into water, causing them to burn, fall to their death, or drown. So these demons, without drowning themselves, drowned all those animals.
“When those who tended them saw what had happened”—that is, when the swineherds saw the pigs fall into the water and saw that the possessed man they knew was now in his right mind—they fled. They ran away, as people still do, and went into the city and the countryside to report it. Whenever they met someone, they said, “This is what happened. That man has been healed; the pigs became possessed and plunged down the bank.” Then the people “went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind.”
They were frightened by what they saw. For them, everything had been turned upside down, as we say. Some people object: “Is Christ so harsh that He permits people to suffer material loss?” God willed this. I do not know whether you are aware that another passage says there were about two thousand swine. For two thousand to drown, it means that at least one demon must have entered each pig and driven it down into the water. Two thousand pigs, averaging about fifty okas each, would amount to roughly one hundred thousand okas of meat. That was an enormous loss!
These men were Jews who raised swine and sold the meat to the Gentiles, because Jews were forbidden to eat pork. The pig does not chew the cud; it is not a ruminant and was therefore considered an unclean animal. They were permitted to eat animals considered clean—animals with a divided hoof, like the goat, the sheep, and the ox, which also chewed the cud. These were called clean animals, and they were permitted to eat them.
They were not permitted to eat pork. But because Gentiles lived in that region and there were many acorns there—and acorns, as you know, fatten pigs—they raised swine and sold the meat. As Christ passed through, He punished them. “Since I told you in the Law that pork is forbidden, why do you raise pigs and sell them to others, acting against your own faith? You are not permitted to eat it, nor should you be providing it to others.” The Gentiles, of course, had not yet received the Law and ate pork. But these men were deserving of punishment. That is why Christ permitted the herd to rush into the lake. This shows that all so-called goods and all material wealth acquired contrary to the law of God will one day be lost. They will be lost.
The justice of Christ will pass by and scatter them to the winds. That is the lesson here: “Gentlemen, you are breaking the Law, and therefore you are punished.” Let people accumulate wealth and enlarge their property and businesses unjustly, through the sweat and blood of others, through fraud and every kind of scheme—whether at the expense of the state, institutions, other people, their workers, employees, brothers, or the weak. The hour will come when God’s justice passes by and makes it all disappear before their eyes. They will find themselves penniless once again.
That is what happened in this case. Do not be scandalized, then; God is not unjust. The people came to see what had happened and found the man clothed and in his right mind. “Those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been saved.” The people who were there explained that the man who had terrorized them—the naked, wild man—had now become well from the moment the demons came out of him. “But we have suffered a loss. He may now be clothed and in his right mind, but we have lost our property.” Then came the response of the Gadarenes, who had suffered materially: “The whole multitude of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them.” “Please, Lord Jesus Christ, rise and leave
this place.” Why were they driving Him away? He had delivered them from the possessed man, from the one who had terrorized them and blocked the road so that they could not pass. “He harmed our financial interests. Since He harmed our interests, we do not want Him.” This is also why many people do not want Christ. Everyone would want Christ if He blessed their lawlessness. If today we do not want Christ, His Church, His priests, His Mysteries, and all the rest, it is because He does not agree with us or bless our sins. If He were to say that fornication is not condemned, adultery is not condemned, the killing of children is not condemned, and that we need neither fasting, prayer, nor church attendance, then we would all cry out with one voice: “You are the one we want!”
Make a Gospel like that, and you will see how quickly people believe. But because the Gospel says, “Do not,” and, “You shall not,” they begged Him: “Go away from here.” What did Christ do? Not one person protested and said, “What are you doing?” The whole multitude, everyone with one voice, said, “Let Him leave.” The result? “He got into the boat and returned to the other side.” Christ alone never imposes Himself. If you do not want Him once, He will not remain and force Himself upon you a hundred times. Christ compels no one. A person must beg Christ to remain in his home and to stay close to him. These, in general, are the lessons that flow from this event, which will be read in sequence in our Church this coming Sunday.
in the appointed sequence. Why am I explaining this series of Gospel readings to you? So that we may enter into their spirit. For although we go to Church, we are not always able to grasp fully what is being taught and preached, even though it is so necessary for us. May our Lord bless us. Amen.

Δεν έχουν δείγματα δαιμονισμένων ανθρώπων, διότι ο Σατανάς ενεργεί επί του ανθρώπου κατά διαφόρους τρόπους. Δεν είναι μόνον δαιμονισμένοι οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι πίπτουν κάτω και βγάζουν αφρούς ή ανεβαίνουν στις στέγες των οικιών τους, έχουν δεμένους με αλυσίδες ή τους έχουν στα φρενοκομεία ή στις νευρολογικές ή ψυχιατρικές κλινικές. Είναι πολλοί άνθρωποι με γραβάτα οι οποίοι, χωρίς να κάνουν καμιά τρέλα τέτοια, εντούτοις όμως άγονται και φέρονται από το πνεύμα του πονηρού. Αυτό να το ξέρετε. Και πολύ άσημα λέμε πολλές φορές: Θα ερωτηθούμε: «Τι κάνετε στο σπίτι;» «Δόξα τω Θεώ, καλά». Γιατί δοξάζεις τον Θεό και τι καλοσύνη έχετε;
Ο ίδιος λοιπόν ο Σατανάς λέει: «Μὴ ἐπιτάξῃς» να πάμε στην Άβυσσο, μη δώσεις εντολή. Άρα πιστεύεις τον Χριστό για ανώτερό σου; Ναι, τον πιστεύει για ανώτερό του ο διάβολος και ο άνθρωπος δεν πιστεύει τον Χριστό για ανώτερό του και συντάσσεται με τον διάβολο. Πόσο αστείος είναι ο άνθρωπος! Πώς το αφεντικό σου λέγει ότι είναι αδυνατότερο από τον Χριστό, γιατί εσύ δεν παραδέχεσαι, άνθρωπε; Και εφόσον ο Σατανάς λέγει «μη με στείλεις, μὴ ἐπιτάξῃς εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν», πώς εσύ λες δεν υπάρχει κόλαση και δεν υπάρχει Άβυσσος και ότι εδώ δήθεν είναι η κόλαση και ο Παράδεισος; Πώς θα διαψεύσεις τον Σατανά;
Λέει και καμιά σωστή κουβέντα και πράττει και κανένα σωστό. Εδώ δείχνει την αδυναμία του, αφενός το να μπει ή να μην μπει ή να βγει ή να μην βγει, και ταυτόχρονα την αδυναμία του να διαβάσει τον νου του Χριστού. Και απορώ πώς πολλοί και πολλές πηγαίνουν στον διάβολο να τους πει νέα περιστατικά, τι θα γίνει, πώς να αντιμετωπίσουν μια κατάσταση κλπ. Γιατί όλα αυτά τα μέντιουμ κλπ. είναι στέκια δικά του. Να ακούτε ψυχικές έρευνες και πράσινα άλογα. Είναι στέκια του σατανά και, αν ο άνθρωπος είναι πιστός, αυτός που θα πάει εκεί, δεν μπορεί να ανοίξει τη γλώσσα του, καν το στόμα του το μέντιουμ· θα τον διώξει πυξ λαξ. Αλλά εμείς, διότι δεν πιστεύουμε στον Χριστό, κατεβαίνουμε τώρα κάτω στα πρόσωπα αυτά και αναζητούμε από εκεί τη λύση των υποθέσεών μας. Αν μπορούσαν να λύσουν οι σατανάδες τις υποθέσεις των ανθρώπων, όλα θα ήσαν λυμένα. Δεν ξέρουν οι σατανάδες τα εγκλήματα; Πόσον οι ίδιοι βάλαν τους ανθρώπους και τα κάμανε. Δεν ξέρουν ποιοι τα κάμανε, πού είναι, ποιοι κλέψανε, ποιοι σκοτώσανε; Δεν τα ξέρουν; Γιατί δεν τα βρίσκουν μέσα στο μέντιουμ, η αστυνομία και λοιπά; Απαγορεύει ο Χριστός στον σατανά να μαρτυρήσει. Δεν μπορεί να μαρτυρήσει. Πρέπει να πάρει άδεια για να μαρτυρήσει. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος. Διαφορετικά, δεν συμφέρει αυτόν. Όλα δεν ξέρει ο σατανάς τι γίνεται απ' έξω τώρα; Πώς δεν ξέρει;
