Summary
The lecture presents Satan as a real spiritual enemy whose works Christ came to destroy through His saving mission and the Orthodox Church. Prayer and fasting are emphasized as essential weapons against demonic power, alongside repentance, Holy Communion, and faithful participation in Orthodox worship. Christians are called to accept trials and bear the cross patiently, trusting that God sees their suffering and uses adversity for spiritual formation.

Those of us who have been attentive should now turn our attention to a person who often escapes our notice, yet brings both temporal and eternal ruin upon man.
I do not know how many of you arrived in time for the Gospel reading, because some of you, on account of your bathing, have circumstances that prevent you from coming on time. In any case, we heard of a tragedy within a household, which a father brought before Christ and His disciples: his child was possessed by a demon. This gave occasion for a third person to appear—the one called a demon, the devil, Satan; hence the child was demon-possessed. I want to believe that we believe in the existence of this third person. We always see ourselves and someone else, or ourselves and God. But we do not see the devil. Today, however, he appears openly. And those of you who read the Scriptures will have encountered him many times, and you will have become convinced that the existence of this person was the reason God descended into the world. If God was crucified, He was crucified because of this devil and his works. He came to destroy the works of Satan; and to this day, through His Church, the Orthodox Church, Christ continues
to accomplish this work. He destroys the works of Satan. The devil is a serious adversary, and man must understand him correctly, because he is his enemy—the enemy of himself, of his wife, of her husband, of his children, of his neighbor, and of the whole world. Whenever a man sees turmoil, discord, jealousy, revenge, theft, dishonor, worship of the flesh, adultery, and so forth, he should know that this master craftsman is behind it all. He must not take things merely at face value, but, like a physician, must seek out the cause,
so that he may heal the effect. If a man does not grasp the cause, discover it, and treat it, he labors in vain to heal the effects. Yesterday afternoon, those of you who were in this area saw the atmosphere charged with lightning, thunder, and so forth. In the same way, but far worse, humanity is charged and demonically afflicted. Yet we do not understand it, because we ourselves are caught within this whirlwind. We are not standing outside it, able to recognize another person’s sickness and show him, if he is willing, the way to be healed. Instead, we look outside ourselves for those to blame
and for external causes, even though the cause is within, arising from that abiding enemy called Satan, called the devil. Yes, he is the one who creates all the evil conditions in the world, for the good ones are created by God together with the person who is willing to cooperate with Him. Today, then, this suffering father brought his child, who had been possessed since childhood and was thrown sometimes into the fire and sometimes into the water so that he might drown. He brought him to Christ’s disciples while Christ was away, but the disciples were unable to cast out the demon. This gave us an opportunity to understand that this enemy exists, how much suffering he can cause within a family, in a single person, and throughout humanity, and also how healing may be found.
Some who read these passages wonder why the Apostles were unable to cast out the demon. Christ, our chief physician and teacher, revealed the reason: there was unbelief. But did that poor father who came to the Teacher have no faith? Was not the very act of coming itself proof of faith? Yes, he began with faith, but ended in little faith. How did that happen? I will tell you.
The father came with his suffering child, but did not find Christ. Those of you who read the passages will know that Christ was at the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor at that time. Instead, the father encountered the scribes and the Pharisees. “What do you want?”
“I have brought my child here.” “He is not here. He has a few little disciples here; go and see whether they can do anything for you.” That took all the strength out of the man. Imagine—God forbid—that you were to take one of your loved ones to a renowned physician in France, London, or elsewhere. You arrive and they tell you, “You know, the professor is away in America on a three-month leave. But do not be discouraged; his students are here,” and so forth. It makes no difference. One of the students might perhaps be better than the professor, or at least his equal. But what good is that to us? We came for the professor. Our strength fails us. These men damaged the father’s faith, just as many people around us shake our faith. There are many faithful people, but there are also many of little faith and many unbelievers in our surroundings,
and they cool our faith as well. Consequently, we do not receive what we ask for, because faith is the vessel into which God places the miracle. And if the miracle you seek is great, it requires great faith. You must have great faith. This is precisely why we often make a vow. Someone says, “I am going to the Most Holy Theotokos on Tinos. I will go there and do this or that.” But is not the Most Holy Theotokos also here? Do you not have her icon in your room, in your icon corner? “I do, but here my faith is at alpha; when I finally arrive there after hardships and difficulties, my faith has grown to omega.” It becomes greater, and there is now room within it for the miracle. Father, why is the child demon-possessed? Is the child perhaps to blame?
“Since childhood,” the Gospel says. A person becomes demon-possessed for one of two reasons: either he himself opens the door, as Judas did through theft, and Satan enters; or Christ permits it for some particular reason. Here, according to the account of the Evangelist Mark, the father was asked how long the child had been possessed, and he answered, “Since childhood.” Therefore, we can exclude the child as the cause. He has no sins of his own. He is not sexually immoral, an adulterer, a blasphemer, or a gambler. He is a little child and knows nothing yet of evil. So someone else is the cause—evidently the father, as Christ demonstrated to him. For when the father complained to Him, “If You can, Lord, help us. Your disciples could not. If You can, have compassion on us,”
Christ discerned what was in his soul, turned the matter around, and said to him, “It is not a question of whether I can, but whether you can believe.” Then the father understood that he himself was the cause and said, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” The command was then given, and the demon came out. This hard and indifferent father brings children into the world and imagines that his only responsibility is to nourish their bodies with milk, not to nourish their souls. He regards them as objects or, at most, sends them to Church. He does not bring them to Church; he sends them. “George, go to Church.” “And where are you going, Father?” The father has his coffee, reads his newspaper, goes fishing, or goes somewhere else.
Little George goes to Church as long as his food and clothing still depend on you, his father. But tomorrow he will not go, because he will make a very serious calculation: “If Church were something good, my father would come too. Since he sends only me, it cannot be all that good. He must simply want to be rid of me.” “Katerina, hurry to Church.” “And why are you not coming to Church, Mother?” A father, then, must bring his child to Church, not merely send him. Of course, there are cases when a father is confined at home, when his work makes it impossible, or when difficult circumstances prevent him. Then little Katerina or little George will be sent, and when they return we will make sure they truly went and ask how they behaved, and so forth. A parent can play a major role in a child becoming demonically afflicted, and this happens very often today.
This lesson is especially relevant to humanity today, because I dare say there is scarcely a family without people—and especially children—who are under Satan’s influence on account of their parents. On account of their parents, I say, apart from a very small number of cases—perhaps five in a thousand—in which the parents labor, struggle, care, give guidance, and work upon the child as a soul, not as an object or an ornament, striving to form a true human being and a Christian. For if they form an educated human being without forming a Christian, they forge a double-edged sword, sharp on both sides. The more they give the child and the more they teach him,
the more dangerous he becomes to himself and to the world. But if they also give him a brake—and that brake is Christ—and keep him joined to the Church, then that child will benefit himself, those around him, life in the present age, and the life to come. The responsibility, then, is great, and today’s lesson is a serious one. Nearly every family today, even here in Greece, is coming to have its own psychiatrist. Abroad, there is scarcely a family without one. And why do they have a psychiatrist? Because they do not have a spiritual father to hear their confession. The confessor has been replaced by the psychiatrist.
The psychiatrist listens to the confession of the woman, the man, the young woman, or the young man who finds no meaning in life, thinks of suicide, suffers from depression, has lost sleep, and so forth. Yet he leaves the burden upon them. The confessor, by contrast, has been appointed by God and possesses the authority to bind and to loose. He is the clergyman who serves Satan notice of eviction, yet people do not make use of him today. Psychiatrists are multiplying, while spiritual fathers are becoming fewer. You see and hear in your own surroundings—if these things are not happening to you personally—how frequently psychiatrists are consulted today. “Consult a psychiatrist.” But consult a priest; consult a spiritual father. Let the couple confess, and let the child confess. However much the poor psychiatrist may have studied, and however much he may know, he does not have the power to
serve Satan notice of eviction. I will tell you of an incident that took place in the heart of Athens. The late Teperidis, the psychiatrist and neurologist, was still alive then. Most of you will know of him; he was at the very top of his field. A physician went to Aiginiteio Hospital to visit a patient who was a friend of his. The director there was an acquaintance of Teperidis. “Doctor, how is so-and-so? He is a friend of mine.” “I am monitoring him,” he said. “I give him medication and provide the appropriate treatment,” and so forth. “You may be sure, doctor, that everything necessary is being done.” “Can you tell me what exactly you are treating him for?” “This is something beyond my science,” he replied. “I have grown old in this profession, and I still do not know.” “Doctor, this man needs Saint Gerasimos.” “You must be joking,” he said. “I mean exactly what I am telling you, doctor.”
“This man needs Saint Gerasimos; he does not need pills.”
And here is what happened—what happened. “Would you like me to prove it to you?” he asked. He did not want to offend the late Mr. Teperidis. “Would you like me to prove it?” “How will you prove it to me?” he asked. “At once,” the physician replied. What was the patient’s condition? He lay face down on the bed, completely motionless, stiff as a board, day and night. Satan had pinned him there. Everything happened while he remained in that position.
The director’s office was across the way. On his desk was a small copy of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. The physician took the little book, went over quietly, and slipped it beneath the patient’s pillow. The professor watched. “What has happened now?” he asked. “Nothing,” the physician replied. “Wait, and you will see.”
The physician was a religious man, and from his pocket he took a small pocket edition of the New Testament. Very slowly and quietly, he went over and placed it beneath the pillow. The patient sprang upright like a coil and began hurling blasphemies at him. “What have you put here? You have burned me!” he cried, and said other such things. “Did I not tell you, doctor, that he needs Saint Gerasimos and not pills?” I am not saying that there are no pathological or schizophrenic conditions, and so forth, that require medical science. That is not what I am saying. I am saying that, in most cases, this master craftsman is involved and creates these conditions. A person must come to Christ. The suffering father, mother, or brother must come to Christ, as they did in today’s Gospel, if they wish to find their way, to have the spells upon them broken, and to have their obstacles removed.
so that the adversities in their lives may cease—the obstacles placed in their way by this ruthless enemy of mankind, who plots against us day and night. The emptier you see the churches become, the more the world will fall under demonic influence. It is the Church that serves Satan his notice of eviction. When a person participates rightly in the life of the Church, practices the faith rightly, prays, confesses, and fasts, he shuts Satan out. Satan cannot easily get hold of him. So care for your children from infancy, from the cradle—not after they have grown up. Once they are grown, they will not listen to you if you yourselves do not listen to Christ. Bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
You will have Christ as your helper, so that your children will respect you and listen to you, and your word will carry weight. Otherwise, they will follow the ways of the world, the fashions of the day, and the desires of the flesh, and you will not be able to restrain them. Now, while they are still young, inoculate them. Teach them to pray; teach them to attend Church; take them with you. Just now I saw two or three little children in the sanctuary.
Look, here they are. Yet even our own children, who are staying here, swimming down at the beach and riding their bicycles and so forth, are not in church today. They will sit down at the table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they will have their snacks in between as well. But they do not come to this Table, where Satan is served his notice of eviction and the child receives illumination so that he may find the true path. What results, then, can humanity expect under such circumstances?
A person must therefore understand that the purpose of Orthodox churches, the purpose of the clergy, and the purpose of the Mysteries in the Orthodox Church is to undo and destroy the works of Satan. Woe to us if the churches disappear. Woe to us if the clergy disappear. Woe to us if the Mysteries of the Orthodox Church cease.
These are what he fears. He fears no one else. He does not fear cardinals, nor any of the great leaders of foreign confessions, whoever they may be. He fears the humble, uneducated Orthodox priest in his worn and greasy little cassock. When the priest puts on his epitrachelion, you will hear the demon stir up everything against him, because he alone has the authority to serve the demon his notice of eviction.
So, unless some way is found to enlighten us, so that we return to the Church and do what the Church teaches, then all of us, more or less, will remain influenced and even demonized, if you will permit the expression. Sadly, we are living in the age prophesied by Saint Anthony the Great. An age will come, he says, when humanity will rage in madness and be possessed by demons; and if anyone should remain sane, if anyone has escaped, the others will say to him, “You are mad.” Today, the person who has children is considered mad and demonized; so is the person who preserves virginity, who fasts, attends Church, confesses, and receives Holy Communion. Such a person is regarded as backward, out of fashion, and belonging to another age. He is considered demonized. By whom?
By those who are themselves demonized. The prophecy of Saint Anthony the Great is being fulfilled today, my beloved. “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting,” Christ said. The Dormition Fast has passed, and the Christians did not fast. Then they came to receive Holy Communion in order to offer their festal greetings to the Most Holy Theotokos. They tore Jesus apart; they did not receive Jesus in Holy Communion. Satan does not fear such things, and they do not make him flee. Sin is added to sin, while he remains firmly rooted there. He fears fasting; he fears prayer. Put it to the test. Christianity is something each person must experience for himself. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Let us not deceive ourselves: we will depart from this world. The world will not come to an end without us. The things considered the delights of this world are nothing. We found them here, and here they will remain. Our burial shrouds have no pockets
in which to take anything with us. Let each person put his affairs in order. The elderly are moving toward death, but death is also moving toward the young. We are all subject to what is called death. Yet death can be faced by the person who is found with Christ. Our prayer should be: “My Christ, before I return to the earth from which I was taken, grant that I may first return to You.” If we are to return to Him and be with Him in eternity, we must love Christ’s Orthodox Church as our mother, so that we may have God as our Father and Christ as our Brother—if we wish to live well in this world and eternally in the next. This I wish for one another and for all. Amen. This is the season when our Christ fed about twenty-five thousand people with a few loaves
and a few fish. Because the people had eaten and were satisfied, they thought of proclaiming Christ and making Him king. Our Christ, wishing to avoid their cry of “You are the one we want,” immediately dispersed them. He instructed His disciples to enter the boat and cross the Sea of Tiberias toward Capernaum, while He remained alone on the mountain that evening. He sent the crowds away.
That matter was over. The disciples obeyed, entered the boat, and set out to cross the Sea of Tiberias to the other side, but they encountered difficulty during the voyage. The wind was against them. But is Christ not God? Of course He is God. And since these men were now going in obedience to God, how could anything dare obstruct them? This remains a question for many people even today. How can this happen?
At the very moment when I believe in Christ, when I obey Him and follow the will of God instead of my own, how can everything turn against me? Why do good things not come my way? Why does He not remove the devil from my path? Why does He not remove wicked people from around me? Why does He not protect me from illnesses, lawsuits, persecution, and malice? Why does He not protect me? This is what the Gospel teaches. If a person were willing to study, instead of studying and watching only the things of this world—if he also paid attention to what the Gospel says and how it teaches us—he would have found the explanation and the answer, and he would not be scandalized. The Apostles, then, were obeying Christ. Yet did the wind have the power to rise against them? Dawn found them still there, my beloved. It was the fourth watch of the night, Scripture says. Do you know what the fourth watch means? From three until six in the morning. They had set out the previous afternoon and had traveled only about twenty or twenty-five stadia—that is, what we would call a mile and a half. You can understand what those men suffered throughout the night. They did not turn back to tell Him, “You know, the weather is bad and we will drown. Let us leave tomorrow instead.” They remained there, struggling against the weather. When would they arrive? What would happen?
Would they reach the other side or not? That was not their concern. They had been commanded to depart and cross the sea. Whatever was to happen along the way was not their affair. It was the affair of Another, who reached them toward dawn, walking upon the sea. They were terrified. Imagine the waves of the Sea of Tiberias rising and falling, a tiny nutshell of a boat filled with so many men tossing up and down, and then seeing someone walking upon the water. They thought He was a ghost. He knew this, because He is also God. He is not merely a man; He is not only the Son of Mary, but also the Son of God. “Do not be afraid,” He said. “Take courage; it is I.”
You will remember Peter saying, “Well, if it is You”—for in the darkness he could not tell whether it truly was Him—“command me to come to You upon the waves.” Peter was an old hand at sea, a man of the sea from childhood, and he knew the Sea of Tiberias inch by inch. “Come,” Christ told him. Despite that raging storm, Peter stepped down and began walking upon the sea toward Jesus. But as he walked, at one point he took his eyes off Christ and looked at the great waves coming toward him. When he saw how large they were, he began to sink. Then he cried out, “Lord, save me,” and Christ said to him:
“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” When did he begin to sink? When he took his eyes off Christ and looked at the threatening sea. Here is another lesson. When a person relies on his own strength rather than on Christ, he begins to sink in life, both in soul and in body. But as long as he goes straight toward Christ, saying, “Christ is speaking. I will not listen to you, no matter how much you threaten me, world; no matter how much you threaten me, husband or wife; whoever you may be, I will not listen to you. This is what Christ says, and it is toward Him that I am going,” then miracles will take place in his life. Christ walks upon the sea,
because He is God. But Peter also walks upon it. Is Peter God? No, he is not God, but he believes in God. That is the difference. When a person believes in Christ and carries out Christ’s command—“Come,” He says, “I am here; come here. Leave the other paths and come this way, to Me”—the sea becomes solid beneath him, and Peter walks upon it. But the moment he took his eyes off Christ and glanced to the side, he began to sink. And he not only began to sink, but also to lose his composure and make a sorry spectacle of himself. This was Peter, who could easily have taken a couple of strokes, as we say, reached the surface, grasped the boat, and climbed aboard. He was a man who must have had more seawater than blood flowing through his veins.
Yet he began to sink as though he knew nothing of the sea, had never gone swimming, and knew nothing at all. Everything becomes confused when a person takes his eyes off Christ. He loses his bearings and begins to sink, both spiritually and physically. But when a person always keeps his eyes on Christ, thinks of Him, relies on Him, and journeys toward the day when he will meet Him, then whatever happens along the way, miracles will resolve his difficulties, and one day he will reach the right destination. Therefore, even if you follow God’s path and live in obedience to God—to Christ—do not ask for an easy life.
You will encounter difficulties in your life. And if the people of God, those who walk along God’s path, encounter difficulties, what will others encounter, and where will they end up? They may even go so far as suicide. Every day you hear of people blowing their brains out—people who had the means to live not merely twenty, thirty, or fifty years, the length of an ordinary life, but five hundred thousand years, and yet they kill themselves. They do so because they take their eyes off Christ and pay no heed to Him, though He alone gives them consolation in this world and confidence and hope for the world to come. Why, Christ, do You not go more quickly to help them?
Did you notice? Scripture says that He saw them from afar, tossed by the waves. When you are tormented, when you are ill, when you suffer, when you are persecuted or treated unjustly, God sees you. This consoles a person: He sees me at this very hour when I am suffering. If He allows me to suffer, then I must pass through this suffering. Many of us want to cast away the cross that so often comes into our lives. But the cross benefits us. There can be no Christian without a cross. If our Leader bore the Cross, how can we not bear one, and how can we call ourselves Christians without a cross?
He said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” How can anyone be called a Christian if he has no cross? We are not to seek out the cross. But when the cross comes to us—when misfortune, an obstacle, or adversity comes—we must bear it with patient endurance and steadfastness. Every temptation, my beloved, every tribulation in a person’s life is a kind of sharpening. It sharpens us. Temptation is a file that wears away a protruding rough edge from an object so that it may be fashioned properly.
Do not cast away that file. There is some part of you that is not right. Something is protruding and must be filed down, so that the person may become beautiful and fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. This is what the tribulations of this world accomplish. I am not telling you to seek them. But when they come, receive them with thanksgiving: “Welcome. Lord, if You do not intend to take away this cross—this tribulation, poverty, lack of work, persecution, or illness—then at least give me the strength to bear it.” This is the prayer of the believer. He is not to begin lamenting or mourning, because Christ never allows a temptation to come upon a person that cannot benefit him. All our temptations are beneficial. But we shrink from hardship. We want chatter, laughter, revelry, constant social excitement, and pleasures. These things lead to Hell. A person must turn inward, recognize his weakness, recognize his impurity, recognize the evil within himself, and labor upon it in this world. Like a seamstress or an embroiderer, he must work upon the handiwork of his soul beside the Church of Christ, so that one day he may place it into the hands of God. For whether he wishes it or not, he will depart from this world. In the accounts concerning Macarius the Great, it is related that once Saint Macarius
was coming down from his hermitage in Egypt to the city with his disciple. As they reached the city, they found a woman by the right side of the road, weeping bitterly. The younger monk said to the elder, “Geronta, someone is crying.” “Yes, my child, but we are monks, and she is a woman.” “That is true, Geronta, but she is still an image of God. Perhaps we can offer her something. Perhaps we can say a word to comfort her.” “My child, we are monks. Let us continue on our way.” “You are causing me to stumble, Geronta. Thank you.”
“I should not go, because I am young. You should go and speak to her, since anyone can see that you are an elder.” At last he persuaded the elder. “May it be blessed,” the elder said. So they turned back and approached her, one remaining farther away while the other came nearer, and asked what was wrong. She kept weeping without even looking at them or noticing them. “What is the matter, my good woman? We too are men of God. Is there anything we can do to help you? We see that you are sorrowful; we see that you are reaching the point of despair.” There was neither voice nor response. She did not answer. But the elder persisted and persisted. At last she raised her head and said, “My good elders, go on your way. You cannot help me.” “Why can we not help you?” “There is no help for me.”
“As long as you are still alive, how can there be no help? The fact that God has kept you alive means that there is still time and that help is possible. Tell us what has happened to you.” After much time and much urging, they finally managed to draw the answer from her: “My good elders, God has abandoned me for three years.” “God has abandoned you? Then how are you still here? How do you breathe? How do you exist? How do you know that He has abandoned you?” “For three years I have suffered no temptation. Therefore, God has abandoned me,” she said, and continued to weep. Do you hear this? Of course, these things seem strange to us, but they belong among those of whom Paul says in Hebrews, “of whom the world was not worthy.”
Can the world understand such things? She was weeping bitterly because she had not fallen ill, because no one had accused or slandered her, because she had not been persecuted and had not gone hungry. She took this to mean that God no longer had anything to do with her. For if God were still dealing with her, she believed that she would necessarily endure these things, so that she might be brought low—that is, become humble. Temptations, tribulations, illnesses, times of mourning, and the like keep us close to God. They keep us in prayer; we go to confession; we call upon the Most Holy Theotokos; we ask for so many things. As long as the air-raid sirens were sounding, the churches were full of worshippers. When the sirens stopped, the churches emptied, while the cabarets and beaches filled with corruption. This is the truth.
Let us not deceive ourselves. When circumstances press hard upon us, we cry, “Come, Most Holy Theotokos!” When the pressure eases, we say, “Away with you, Most Holy Theotokos!” That is what we are like. So the Lord leaves them in the struggle and comes at the very last moment. Do you know what the fourth watch means? It is as though you were to pass your whole life in tribulation, for these men spent their entire journey in tribulation.
Then, at a moment when they did not expect Him and had not called upon Him, He went to them of His own accord. He saw them, just as He sees us. Why do we suffer? Why are we persecuted? Why does this happen to us? We do not want to see why these things happen to us. But He knows. For many of the things that happen to us are not given by God; we bring them upon ourselves through our own egotism.
Through our unbelief and our distance from God, we create situations in our lives without asking God. Then afterward we complain, “What have I ever done to God?” and so on. But where have you ever encountered God? When have you ever listened to Him? You have never fasted. You have never prayed. You have refused to have children. You have not remained chaste, whether woman or man. You never even spoke of God. So why are you talking about God? How do you know Him? Have you not condemned the priest? Have you not refused to go to church, calling churches “priests’ shops”? And now you speak to me about God? How do you know God? Where have you gone to learn about Him and about how He thinks, that you can say, “What have I done to God?” You ask God only for comfort, feasting, health, celebrations, and the like, while refusing to accept anything else. Far from God, a person suffers many things; but close to God, he also suffers many things, so that he may become better.
The gold we wear as jewelry—a necklace, an earring, a wedding ring, or anything of the kind—did not begin that way. It passed through intense heat and much fire before it became what it is. All foreign matter had to be removed so that the gold’s true worth alone might remain and we could wear it as an ornament. In the same way, a person will pass through fire and iron in this world; and if he endures with patient endurance, he should know that Christ will bring him into a place of rest. Christ fasted for forty days and forty nights and was tempted by the devil. Yet we do not fast even on Wednesday and Friday. During these days of the Dormition Fast, the Most Holy Theotokos approaches death, and people have not observed this season of fasting.
For various reasons, they did not bring fasting into their homes—not only fasting of the stomach from oil and meat, but not even abstinence from the marriage bed or from bodily relations. “Oh, the Most Holy Theotokos is dying! I will still do whatever I want.” And on top of everything else, both young women and the others blaspheme her. If we meet her one day—and woe to us on that day if, at the Judgment, the Most Holy Theotokos is not our advocate but our accuser—woe to us. A day will come when matters will reach such a point that we shall tear our hair out, but it will be too late. Some people think that because they are young, these things concern only the elderly. “They are the ones who have to do with death; let them take care of such matters. We are still young.” I would like to tell both the young and the old that the truth is this:
The elderly, because they are elderly, are moving toward death; but I would remind you that death is also moving toward the young. Every day they have to scrape young people from the electric poles, together with their girlfriends and the wreckage of their cars. They gather them up from accidents with shovels. Yes, we elderly people are going toward the grave and toward death, but death also goes out and finds the young. Therefore, they too have no guarantee that they will have time to set things right whenever they please, as though God were simply obliged to wait until they have made a complete mess of everything. Yes, He waits and shows great forbearance out of love, because He knows the worth of your soul and mine. But will I still have the time He gives me today, the time I am now failing to use? That is the question!
Who went to confession during these days, so as to observe this fifteen-day fast and attend the funeral of his Mother the day after tomorrow? Who—who has ever thought of this? Who goes in the evenings to the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon, to pray for his family, for the Church, for the nation, and for the world? They say that the state will not even send ships to Tinos the day after tomorrow, because it has no fuel to send them for the feast of the Most Holy Theotokos. Do you understand what is happening around us and what awaits us? Someone may say, “I will remain faithful.” You, yes; I, another one, two, five, or ten. But the majority do not want this. Those few, however, must understand what is happening and hold fast: we must return to Christ and take Him seriously, because when we keep our eyes fixed upon Him, He takes all our affairs into His own hands.
Christ was tempted. After forty days, angels came and ministered to Him. So you too, whether young or old, will undergo your trial. You will certainly undergo it. And when you have been tested and have succeeded, then relief will come; then angels will come and minister to you. Do you know what the Evangelist says? When they finally saw Christ and realized that it was He there upon the sea, they wanted to take Him into the boat, so that He would not have to continue on foot and grow weary. And do you know what happened? The boat immediately arrived at the harbor for which they were bound. Read the sixth chapter of John and see. The moment they sought to receive Christ into the boat, the boat reached by itself the harbor they had been trying to reach, though all those men had been unable to get there throughout the entire night.
This is Christ. So bring Christ into your little boat. You do not even have to manage to bring Him aboard; simply say to Him, “Come, let me receive You.” Things will change at once in your life. Cast out your sins through metanoia, repentance, and confession. Go to confession, beginning with the sins of your earliest childhood. Put your sins in order. Return whatever you have stolen or wrongfully taken. Ask forgiveness from the people you have wronged, from those you have harmed with your tongue or with your hands. Align yourself with Christ in this world, and be certain that He will bring you to His own harbor, toward which we are all sailing, whether we wish it or not, and where one day we shall arrive. This I pray for one another and for all. Amen.

οι οποίοι μας ψυχραίνουν και εμάς την πίστη. Και, κατά συνέπεια, δεν λαμβάνουμε αυτά τα οποία ζητούμε, διότι η πίστη είναι το δοχείο μέσα στο οποίο βάζει το θαύμα ο Θεός. Και αν το θαύμα σου είναι μεγάλο, θέλει μεγάλη πίστη. Πρέπει να έχεις μεγάλη πίστη. Γι' αυτό και ακριβώς πολλές φορές τάζουμε. «Πάω», λέει, «στην Παναγία, στην Τήνο. Θα πάω εκεί, θα κάνω εκείνο». Γιατί, δεν υπάρχει και εδώ Παναγία και στο δωμάτιό σου, στο προσκυνητάρι σου, δεν έχεις Παναγία; Έχω, αλλά η πίστη μου είναι άλφα εδώ και, όταν φτάσω, έπειτα από αντιξοότητες κλπ., η πίστη μου γίνεται ωμέγα. Μεγαλώνει και εκεί χωράει πλέον να μπει το θαύμα μέσα. Πατέρα, γιατί είναι δαιμονισμένο το παιδί; Φταίει μήπως το παιδί;
Να τα εδώ· ούτε τα δικά μας, που τα έχουμε εδώ πέρα και κάνουν μπάνια κάτω και γυρίζουν με τα ποδήλατα και λοιπά, είναι στην εκκλησία σήμερα. Θα καθίσουν στο τραπέζι, στο πρωινό, στο μεσημβρινό, στο βραδινό, και θα πάρουν και τα επιδόρπια τα ενδιάμεσα. Αλλά στο τραπέζι αυτό, στο οποίο κοινοποιείται η έξωσις του σατανά και το παιδί το φωτίζει για να βρει τον πραγματικό του δρόμο, δεν έρχεται. Τι αποτελέσματα θέλει να έχει, λοιπόν, εν τοιαύτη περιπτώσει αυτή η ανθρωπότης;
Λοιπόν, αν δεν βρεθεί κάποιος τρόπος διαφωτιστικός να επιστρέψουμε εμείς στην Εκκλησία και να πράττουμε αυτά που λέγει η Εκκλησία, και εμείς λίγο πολύ θα είμεθα επηρεασμένοι και δαιμονισμένοι, ας μου επιτραπεί η έκφραση. Είμαστε δυστυχώς στην εποχή που προφήτευσε ο Μέγας Αντώνιος. Θα έρθει εποχή, λέγει, κατά την οποία η ανθρωπότης θα μαίνεται, θα είναι δαιμονισμένη, και αν τύχει να μένει, και αν κάποιος έχει γλιτώσει, θα του λένε οι άλλοι «μαίνεσαι». Και σήμερα θεωρείται τρελός, θεωρείται δαιμονισμένος ο άνθρωπος που κάνει παιδιά, ο άνθρωπος που παρθενεύει, ο άνθρωπος που νηστεύει, ο άνθρωπος που εκκλησιάζεται, ο άνθρωπος που εξομολογείται, ο άνθρωπος που κοινωνεί. Θεωρείται οπισθοδρομικός, θεωρείται ντεμοντέ, του άλλου καιρού. Θεωρείται δαιμονισμένος αυτός. Από ποιους;
Έληξε η υπόθεση αυτή. Αυτοί οι μαθηταί, οι οποίοι υπήκουσαν και εισήλθον εις το πλοίο για να περάσουν την Τιβεριάδα εις το πέραν, συνήντησαν δυσκολία κατά τον πλουν. Ο άνεμος ήτο εναντίος. Μα ο Χριστός δεν είναι ο Θεός; Βέβαια ο Θεός είναι. Και εφόσον οι άνθρωποι αυτοί τώρα πηγαίνουν στην υπακοή του Θεού, πώς όμως τολμά να τους μπει εμπόδιο; Είναι ένα ερώτημα αυτό σε πολλούς ανθρώπους και σήμερα ακόμη. Πώς;
Καθ’ ην στιγμήν εγώ πιστεύω τον Χριστό, καθ’ ην στιγμήν εγώ υπακούω, εγώ πάω στο θέλημα του Θεού, δεν κάνω το δικό μου, πώς μου έρχονται αντίποδα; Γιατί δεν μου έρχονται καλά; Γιατί δεν διώχνει τον διάβολο από τη μέση; Γιατί δεν βγάζει τους κακούς ανθρώπους από το περιβάλλον μου; Γιατί δεν με φυλάει από ασθένειες, από μηνύσεις, από διωγμούς, από κακίες; Γιατί δεν με φυλάει; Αυτά διδάσκει το Ευαγγέλιο. Αν ο άνθρωπος ήθελε να μελετήσει και να μην κάθεται να μελετάει μόνο τα του κόσμου και να βλέπει τα του κόσμου, αλλά και το πώς γράφει το Ευαγγέλιο και διδάσκει τον άνθρωπο πράγματα, θα είχε ερμηνεύσει και λύσει και δεν θα σκανδαλιζόταν. Ήσαν στην υπακοή του Χριστού λοιπόν οι Απόστολοι. Και ο άνεμος έχει τη δύναμη να σηκωθεί εναντίον; Τους ξημέρωσε, αγαπητοί μου. Τετάρτη φυλακή, λέγει. Ξέρετε τι θα πει η τετάρτη φυλακή; Τρεις με έξι το πρωί. Από την προηγουμένη το απόγευμα και είχαν πάει περίπου είκοσι με είκοσι πέντε στάδια, δηλαδή ενάμισι μίλι που λέμε. Καταλαβαίνετε τι υπέφεραν οι άνθρωποι όλη τη νύχτα. Δεν εγύρισαν πίσω να του πούνε: «Ξέρεις, ο καιρός δεν είναι καλός, θα πνιγούμε. Άσε, θα φύγουμε αύριο». Εκεί, επάνω στον καιρό. Πότε θα πάμε; Τι θα γίνει;
Θα συναντήσετε δυσκολίες στη ζωή σας. Και αν οι άνθρωποι του Θεού, οι βαδίζοντες τον δρόμο του Θεού, συναντούν δυσκολίες, οι άλλοι τι θα συναντήσουν και πού θα βρεθούνε; Μέχρι αυτοκτονία θα φτάσουν οι άλλοι. Και ακούτε καθημερινώς, άνθρωποι πετούνε τα μυαλά τους, που έχουν προϋποθέσεις να ζήσουν όχι είκοσι, τριάντα και πενήντα χρόνια, που είναι η κοινή ζωή, πεντακόσιες χιλιάδες χρόνια έχουν να ζήσουν, και εν τούτοις αυτοκτονούν, γιατί παίρνουν τα μάτια τους από τον Χριστό, δεν Τον λογαριάζουν, ο Οποίος μόνος τους δίνει παρηγοριά γι’ αυτόν τον κόσμο και εμπιστοσύνη και ελπίδα για τον άλλον κόσμο. Γιατί, Χριστέ, δεν πηγαίνεις γρηγορότερα να τους βοηθήσεις;
Επροσέξατε; Τους έβλεπε, λέει, από μακριά ότι εκλυδωνίζοντο. Όταν βασανίζεσαι, όταν ασθενείς, όταν υποφέρεις, όταν διώκεσαι, αδικείσαι και λοιπά, ο Θεός σε βλέπει. Αυτό είναι μια παρηγοριά για τον άνθρωπο, ότι με βλέπει αυτή την ώρα που εγώ υποφέρω. Για να με αφήνει να υποφέρω, θα πρέπει να υποφέρω. Πολλοί θέλουμε να τον πετάξουμε τον σταυρό που πολλές φορές έρχεται στη ζωή μας. Ο σταυρός είναι ωφέλιμος στον άνθρωπο. Δεν εννοείται χριστιανός χωρίς σταυρό. Αν ο αρχηγός μας έφερε σταυρό, εμείς πώς δεν θα φέρουμε και πώς μπορεί να λεγόμεθα χριστιανοί χωρίς σταυρό;
