Summary

Death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life, so earthly suffering and conduct must be understood in light of life beyond the grave. God offers mercy before death but judges justly afterward, making almsgiving, repentance, prayer, and readiness for death essential parts of Christian life. Temptation does not remove personal responsibility, and communion with Christ through the Church, confession, and the sacraments equips believers to resist evil and live faithfully.

People think this matter is shrouded in darkness and that no one can answer it. That is precisely why we say, “Who has come back from there to tell us what happens?” I do not know whether you have ever given this serious thought. If everything ends at the grave and there is nothing beyond it, then there is no reason for us to live in this world. We might as well throw all reason aside, as they say. This life is a wretched thing if there is no life beyond the grave. What gives a person courage to endure the wickedness of this world—its pain, heartlessness, envy...

and all the many other afflictions found in this world—is the consolation of the world to come. If there is nothing beyond the grave, why should we suffer here? What do I stand to gain? Let my temperature rise to 37.1 for two or three days, and everything fades away. I think of nothing. I run a slight fever—just two or three tenths above normal, as we say. All desire for work is gone, all desire for amusement is gone, all desire of the flesh is gone, and all concern for personal gain is gone. Everything disappears because of a slight fever lasting two or three days. Is that all there is, then? No, that is not all. It is not as people say, that no one has ever gone there and returned here to tell us what happens. No.

Death, my beloved, is not the end. Death is the beginning of another life, a life that has no end. Therefore, a person needs wisdom in this world if he wishes to gain that other world—not a temporary life of five, ten, twenty, or a hundred years, or even 960 years, as long as Methuselah lived, or 930, as long as Noah lived. Oh, there is no number large enough to express what a person may attain and how long he may live, if he is attentive in this world. This life continues into the world to come; the only difference is that the setting changes. Yes, the setting changes. Therefore, Christ must not be blamed.

He has given all people the means, if they are willing to study, pay attention, and search deeply, to know where they are going. The Christian alone knows where he is going. In other words, the Christian knows where he came from, why he came, and where he is going. But man does not know where he came from: from God. Why did he come? To gain life with God and to live with Him. And where is he going? It would have been better for him never to have been born. Yet God has left no one without a share, as we were saying, provided that he is willing. But man is not willing. Think of everything a person reads each day!

Does he not devour the whole day with his eyes, his ears, and every faculty he has? Yet the one thing he does not want to learn about, the one thing that does not interest him, is the matter of God. It does not interest him. Holy Scripture does not interest him.

The Gospel does not interest him; God’s letter does not interest him. What interests him is a letter from his girlfriend, a letter from his friend, a letter about money or business, or some other letter about inventions and I do not know what else. But God’s letter does not interest him. Most homes do not even have the Gospel, the New Testament. Yet we Orthodox—especially we Greeks, since it was written in our language—ought to know it by heart. And still, many times we do not even know the Trisagion or the Creed by heart. Sometimes we are called to serve as sponsors at a Baptism, and we do not know how to recite the Creed; the sacristan says it for us, or someone gives us a sheet of paper and we read it from there. How, then, can a person who took no interest here in learning about the world to come ever hope to attain it? Whether we wish it or not, my beloved...

whether we like it or not, know this: one day we shall depart. Eight feet will come together and eight hands will carry us where we do not wish to go. Yet it is a reality; we shall find ourselves there. As I said, the setting changes. Here in this world we all seek glory, money, and pleasure, under the impression that this is all there is and that, if I have money, I can even buy my way into Paradise. Yet the parable Christ told today, the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, says exactly the opposite: money is powerless if it is merely possessed and not put to good use—if I only acquire it but do not use it well. It secures neither eternity for me nor anything beyond the grave.

If I ate well here and lived more comfortably—while you ate beans and I ate steaks—nothing comes of that. The question is whether I used the wealth of this world to gain the world to come. How can a person gain spiritual things by means of material things? And yet, if he were attentive, he could do so. All people share a common end. Just as we have a common origin, we also have a common end. All of us who entered this world will leave it, whether we wish to or not, whether we believe it or not. And one day we shall find ourselves face-to-face with the One whom we refused to learn about in this world, and that One is Christ. At most, the rich man...

remains here a few days longer. The poor man may depart a little sooner, as did the poor man in today’s parable. But this is the difference: everything changes from the moment a person dies. I want you to know that there are two kinds of death: the death of the body and the death of the soul. The body dies when it is separated from the soul, but the soul also dies when it has no relationship with God. These lights are alive because they are connected to the electric current. Those that have no connection with the current—with light and with life—remain dark. So it is with many people in the world today: when they die, their condition in this world will continue into eternity. Hell and Paradise are not simply here in this life, as people say. But Hell does begin here.

Paradise also begins here, and whatever state the lens of death captures us in at that moment, that is the state in which we shall remain for eternity. Therefore, a person must always be ready, because he knows neither the hour nor the moment when he will depart, when he will be called, and when he will stand face-to-face with his Creator, whom he refused to know in this world—and whom, therefore, he fears. The rich will also die, my beloved; let us not call them blessed. Christ does not forbid us to become wealthy if we can. Abraham too was exceedingly rich, yet Christ desires us to be in Abraham’s bosom. If wealth were evil, Abraham would not have possessed it, nor would Christ send us, as John Chrysostom says, to a man who had 318 household servants—318 slaves. Therefore, the acquisition of money...

earned by our own sweat is blessed, provided that we take care to use it well and help other people who are in need. The rich man in today’s Gospel proved hardhearted. God sent him, so to speak, a truck right to his door, ready to be loaded for the Kingdom of Heaven, because a person has the power to exchange earthly wealth for eternity. Just as he goes to a bank here and exchanges currency before traveling abroad, so the Christian must make such an exchange and lay up treasure where he will one day go. He must turn material wealth into spiritual riches, so that his money may pass with him into that other world. But this rich man paid no attention to this. He lived his own life; he lived for his friends and his girlfriends, remaining hardhearted toward another person’s need. The poor man did not curse him; he uttered no curse.

He remained there and tried, as far as he could, to sustain his life with the crumbs that, as the Gospel says, fell from the rich man’s table. The rich man could easily have given an order to his servants, and it would have cost him nothing: “Take this man covered with sores, this sick man, put him in a room, give him a piece of bread, and call...”

a doctor to bind up his wounds.” He could have done this; it would have cost him nothing. Yet he went in and out of his house and saw this sight. He saw that the poor man’s nurses were dogs, not human beings—dogs licking and cleaning his wounds—and he was not moved. Sadly, what Christ describes is repeated even today. In every age there are hardhearted people who see, right in their own neighborhood...

people of every kind who are in need. Thank you. They will not economize even a little to help them. If they will not give from their abundance, they should at least give sacrificially from what little they have. Whatever a person gives to the poor, whatever he gives to the sick, whatever he gives to someone in need, he gives to Christ Himself. “He who has mercy on the poor lends to God.” And yet almsgiving, which for us ought to be a matter of faith, is not treated as one. “Let him go to the Ministry of Social Welfare. Let him go and receive help from the Church’s charitable fund.” But have you or I given even a penny to that fund? Have you and I economized during the week so that each of us could put in a hundred drachmas? We wasted a thousand drachmas on unnecessary things. Did each of us give a hundred drachmas—or fifty, twenty, ten, even one—so that the charitable fund would have something to distribute? We did not. Where, then, will it find the money to give? And still we expect to see the face of God! How is it possible for us to see the face of God...

the face of the merciful God, when we ourselves are so hardhearted? My beloved, the setting will change. The curtain will fall for each of us, and we do not know when or at what hour it will fall. And woe to us if we are found to have been hardhearted toward others. The more hardhearted a person is found to be in this world, the more severe he should expect Christ to be toward him in the world to come. If we show no mercy, we shall receive no mercy. We must understand this and live by it. The Christians of old kept a money box set aside. They kept a cup or a little container apart and put something into it every day. On Sunday they took what they had saved and gave it to the preachers, to the Apostles, for the needs of their fellow brethren. We do not do this. We may keep a money box, but it is to pay for our summer holiday in the countryside.

Do we keep a money box to help Christ’s brethren, who are hungry and suffering today, even in the midst of the twentieth century, while billions of drachmas are squandered on clothing, cars, villas, and one thing after another? There are people whose very breath smells of hunger. There are families with eight, nine, or ten children. There are sick people; there are women caring for sick family members who cannot even give them a piece of bread. We are very hardhearted today. Although we are so refined and tender toward ourselves, we are hard toward others. But each man went where his own sowing led him. From the first moment that one man and the other closed their eyes, the justice of God was revealed. God shows no partiality. God is just. Of course, many people imagine God to be lame: they regard Him only as love, standing on one leg. They do not also regard Him as justice.

God has two legs, as it were. One stands on this side of the grave, and the other beyond the grave. On this side of the grave there is mercy; beyond the grave there is justice. Therefore, anyone who wishes to find mercy must show mercy in this world. Do you see the throne over there? There is no oil upon it, and no vigil lamp burns there. Here the vigil lamp burns. Why is there not even a little oil over there? Because here is mercy: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” There is judgment; there is the tribunal, where there is no mercy. This arrangement reminds us of that truth. These things were not placed there by chance; their purpose is to remind us. And so the rich man went to his appointed place. God placed him where justice required. “You received,” Abraham tells him, “your good things, while Lazarus received evil things. Therefore, he is comforted, while you are in anguish.”

People do not believe that there are terrible things beyond the grave. That is why they mockingly say, “There is tar over there, and there are burning coals.” I do not know—ask the rich man what is there. He says, “I am in anguish. Send Lazarus to dip his finger in a single drop of water.” Do you accept this? If God has written lies, then I too am speaking lies. But God has no reason to tell us falsehoods. We know the all-consuming reproach of conscience. If this is what happens, then it is the greatest Hell a person can experience: his conscience continually condemns him. And he will take his conscience with him. He will not leave it here in the grave, because it is not material; it is bound to the human soul and will always accuse him for failing to do what was good and right. The rich man asked for help—if not for himself, then at least for his family. He was told that even this could not be done.

Abraham tells him, “They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.” “No, father,” he says, “but if someone goes to them from here...” He judged others by himself. He was waiting for a miracle; he was waiting to see someone raised from the dead. Yet even if someone rises from the dead, will man believe? No, he will not. Did they not see Christ raise Lazarus? Moreover, Christ left Lazarus’s hands bound and told them to loose him, so that no one could regard him as a ghost and the Resurrection might be believed. Did this save anyone? What did they say? “It is expedient for us to remove them both—to kill Lazarus and Christ.” The raising of the dead was no miracle to them. People do not believe because of miracles.

If a person is not of good will and does not choose to believe what Christ has given him in writing, then even if someone rises from the dead, he will explain it away scientifically. Science will have solved it: “He only appeared to be dead,” and that will be the end of the matter. “If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” They will not believe. What has been written was written for us. “The Scriptures are those which testify of Me,” Christ says, “and you are not willing to come to Me that you may have eternal life.” Therefore, there is life beyond the grave. There are also sufferings beyond the grave. Abraham’s bosom exists beyond the grave, and God shows no partiality. The human person remains a person beyond the grave: he feels, suffers, experiences delight, rejoices, or is punished. Therefore, the human person is not lost. The grave is not the end, but a passage into that life beyond the grave—the life that is eternal.

Let no one be deceived. There is life beyond the grave, and according to how we act here, so shall we receive there. Christ told us this today in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. “Even if you wish to cross over to us, you cannot; nor can we cross over to you. A great chasm has been fixed between us and you.” If things are as Christ says—and they are—then how can I go to a medium and claim that I have truly spoken with my mother, my child, or my father? Seriously! Where was that soul found? Did it come here to a medium in Kypseli? Can it simply leave its appointed place? Abraham says it cannot. How, then, can you believe that it can? Yet you let some fortune-teller take your money and deceive you—whether she reads coffee cups or cards, acts as a medium, or conducts a séance around a table.

If souls could leave and go wherever they wished, whenever someone summoned them, which soul would remain in Hell? Would any remain there? Are we to say, then, that Christ is lying? Is Abraham lying when he says, “Even if I wished to cross from here to there, or you from there to here, neither of us could do so”? Is he lying? No, he is not. We are the ones who are deceived, because we refuse to believe Christ, who told us the truth. This leads to another question: since souls cannot move about but remain wherever they have been appointed, what purpose do memorial services serve? Are they merely a way for priests to take our money? No. Precisely because the soul cannot leave the place to which it has gone and return here, we entreat Him who holds life and death in His hands—“He who has authority over both the dead and the living, as God, the immortal King”—to judge with mercy...

...and to look kindly upon the state of my loved one. This passage is precisely the foundation for memorial services, prayers, Divine Liturgies, almsgiving, and everything done in that person’s name. It is not enough to publish in the newspaper, “Instead of a memorial service, five hundred drachmas have been donated for my mother.” Where is your mother in all this? Where is her commemoration? Where did you make out a check in her name and send it? Did you send it through an orphanage—and does the orphanage know your mother’s address? Did you send it through a home for the elderly and make a donation there? You should also bring the offering here and give it to the priest, so that he may take out the particle for her commemoration and place it in the Holy Chalice, and thus your mother may partake indirectly. Yes, this is the foundation; here lie its value and its power. Therefore, do not listen to the Protestants, the Alpha groups, the Millennialists, or the others who say that the Church is deceiving us and taking our money.

The soul cannot move from one place to another by itself. We entreat Christ, who has the power to move the soul to a better place. These, my beloved, are the spiritual and practical teachings that flow from the text of today’s Gospel reading. I pray that all people, including us, may receive a place in Abraham’s Bosom. Amen. Today we are on the Sixth Sunday of Luke, and our Holy Church has reminded us of an event involving our Christ and the ruler of darkness, Satan, which took place between the two cities...

...of the Gergesenes and the Gadarenes, across from the Lake of Gennesaret. In this scene we are given the opportunity to see who is stronger, and it is shown to be our Christ. It also reveals Satan’s weakness and reminds us that one day he too will be bound, as he confessed today: “Do not send me into the abyss before the appointed time.” In other words, he admits that one day he will be bound, confined, and sent into the Abyss. I do not know whether you read...

Do you read the New Testament? Where is Satan? We do not see him. We often see ourselves and the person who has become our enemy, but we do not know who made that person our enemy. This is precisely why we do not conduct our lives as we should. That person is a servant in the hands of the common enemy called the devil. Yet there are also, unfortunately, people who do not believe that Satan exists. Nevertheless, in today’s account a legion of demons appears within one person—that is, roughly six thousand demons. There is something else we should learn today, something that concerns the affliction of our age.

People today go to consult Satan and ask him for prophecies, though he has none, because Satan is neither present everywhere nor all-wise. He does not know what will happen tomorrow. And yet we run to mediums, coffee-cup readers, card readers, and séance tables, seeking answers and wisdom from the devil.

If he were truly so wise—if he could see so far ahead—how did he fail to recognize Christ and then, through the possessed man, run up and fall down before Him? How did he not recognize Christ, only to be humiliated and tremble before Him, saying, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of God Most High? Do not send me into the abyss before my appointed time”?

Why humiliate yourself like that? Why did you not stay out of the way when you saw your God passing before you—when you saw Jesus passing before you? Why come forward and say these words? “Well, I saw Him, yet I did not recognize Him, and I ran into Him.” Therefore, you are neither all-wise nor present everywhere, nor do you know what will happen tomorrow. Is that not so? It is. And yet we give the devil such importance. We exalt him so greatly and give him such a large place in our lives.

These are lessons that flow from this encounter with Christ. We should also bear in mind that one person may often be driven by many demons. Many people insult others by calling them animals: “Get away from here, you animal!” But why insult the animal? Does an animal ever act outside the nature given to it? It does not. Tell me, then: which animals are evil?

The wolf is fierce, the bear has its own trait, the camel another. Each has one fault, if it has any. But we have countless faults: we are cunning, foxes, hyenas, wolves, bears, and murderers. We kill our own children—something cats, dogs, and wild beasts do not do. A person could say that each of us is an entire menagerie, not merely one animal. Why? Because we are influenced by many demons within us. There is one demon of drunkenness, another of fornication, another of adultery, another of gambling, another of blasphemy, and so on. When we have many vices, it means that many demons are influencing us, because the human being is not...

...the source of evil; he receives it from outside. But because he is unarmed, sorcery affects him, the evil eye affects him, and everything else affects him as well. He has no spiritual weapons within himself. He has no relationship with the Church, with the Mysteries, or with Christ, who is stronger. He does not go to Holy Confession, he does not receive Holy Communion, and he does not tell his enemy, “Begone!” Satan discovers this condition and does what he does. Yes, Satan exists, but he is not as powerful as we make him out to be in our lives. People come to Holy Confession and accuse Satan: “He made me do it.” He tempted you, but why did you listen? You were the one who acted. If someone offers you a glass of poison, you do not drink it. If I seize your hand and try to force it into an electrical socket so that you will be burned, you resist.

If I try to push you over a cliff, you pull back and bite my hands. Why, then, did fornication appeal to you? Why adultery, the killing of your child, theft, or robbery? It means that you wanted it. Sin occurs in the same way as the first sin of Adam and Eve: the devil suggested it, the human being found it pleasing, acted upon it, and died. This is always how sin takes place. Today’s account, then, teaches us that a third person is also involved. Some people are scandalized when they hear the events in today’s Gospel. For example, they accuse Christ of allowing two thousand pigs to fall into the lake, causing their owners financial loss. Yes, why did He do this? Do the pigs not belong to Him? Do they belong to human beings?

Does the world not belong to Him? Do not heaven, the sun, the sea, and all things belong to Him? Does He have no right over what is His? Are these things yours and mine, though we neither brought them into being nor made them? You possess nothing. Yet people accuse Christ of causing them loss. But how did He cause the loss? Christ did not tell the demons, “Go and enter the pigs.” He told them, “Go; leave this man.” That is what He said. They then went and entered the pigs. How were they able to enter them? Because the owner—or owners—of the pigs had no relationship with God and were acting unlawfully. For the devil to damage your property, for your animal or even one of your goats to die or fall from a height, he must receive permission from God. God does not guard what people themselves refuse to guard.

When a person has no relationship with God, everything he has lies exposed. These people were acting unlawfully. God’s commandment forbade them to eat pork, raise pigs, or sell them. But because this trade brought them money, and because there were evidently many oak trees there whose acorns made it easy to feed the pigs, they engaged in it. When Christ passed through that place, the loss they suffered served as a reminder: “What you are doing here is unlawful, immoral, and not blessed by Me.” Therefore, it would bear its consequences—and it did, when two thousand pigs fell into the lake. This also reminds us to be watchful, because sooner or later every person will come under the justice of God.

He will stand face to face with God, just as those people did. They possessed all that wealth there, yet in a single moment it ended up in the lake. The same can happen to our possessions when they have been acquired unlawfully, without honest toil, and not through morally upright work.

Such possessions are often lost and, as the common saying goes, “The wind gathers them, and the devil scatters them.” You see people who refused to live honestly, “with the Cross in hand,” as we say. They disregarded what was right, remained spiritually low, and never rose higher; in the end, they failed. Today, then, I wished to remind you of the existence of this person, the devil, together with all the consequences of his existence.

I do not know what you think about this common enemy called the devil.

If the devil did not exist, Christ would not have come into the world. You know that Christ came to destroy the works of Satan. You know that Christ came to conquer death—that is, to conquer the devil, because the devil is death. Only recently, in the account of the widow’s son at Nain, we saw death at the head of the procession as it came out of the city. But Christ is the Author of Life, who always conquers Satan. Through the devil, death entered the world. If we die, wear mourning clothes, weep, and are dissolved into the elements from which we were formed—that is, into the earth—we owe this to the devil. Of course, it is also due to our own negligence, because, as I said earlier, if we had not listened to him—and if even today we did not listen to the things he tells us...

Would there be any reason for us to suffer as much as we do? And if there were no reason, neither would death have occurred, nor would God have become man, nor would we in our wickedness have crucified Him, nor would He have died and risen again, nor would He warn us of judgment when He comes again to judge the living and the dead. There would be no need for the Church if Satan did not exist. There would be no need for the Mysteries or the clergy, because the existence of the Church, the clergy, and the Mysteries reminds us of Satan’s existence and his works. The human being who comes into the world comes, because of sin, sinful and dead.

There is the Mystery of metanoia—repentance—and confession, which sets these matters right. Holy Communion, too, as a Mystery, presents to us the blood of Christ, which cleanses us from every sin. If Holy Unction exists, it is for sickness, which is caused not by God but by the devil. If there is the blessing of water, if we bless the water, take it home, and sprinkle the rooms, thereby serving Satan notice of eviction from our possessions and from our very being, this reminds us that Satan is involved. Therefore, anyone who disregards the existence of this person, the devil, whether knowingly or unknowingly...

Automatically!

Automatically abolishes the Church, the Mysteries, the clergy, and everything else. But the person who takes account of Satan’s tracks—of how he enters through sin and soils the ground of our soul—attends to the Church and makes use of the Mysteries. It is not enough to light a candle. God does not need your candle; the bees that made its wax are His. He does not need you to light an oil lamp for Him; the oil is His. Why light a lamp for Him? So that God can see and not stumble? For what reason? Yet many people stop at this point: “I light my oil lamp; I say my prayer; I light my candle.” What has come of that? What has it produced? God does not want only these things. He wants something produced by the human being. But the only thing a human being produces is sin; he has nothing else of his own. And if he ever does anything good, that belongs to God. “Every good gift,” it says, “and every perfect gift...”

“...is from above and comes down from the Father of lights.” We produce only sins, yet we do not repent of our sins or confess them, so that there may be cause for man to rejoice in Heaven and for the angel in Heaven to rejoice. This, then, must be taken seriously. Generally speaking, people do not want Christ. Christ is the One who rebukes an unlawful way of life, an illicit relationship, premarital relations, an unlawful bed, an illicit couple, dishonest cash dealings, dishonest banking, and every kind of dishonor and misconduct. That is precisely why we do not want Christ. Sometimes we call out to Him and to His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, when we need them.

“My Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” Yes, but as soon as the Most Holy Theotokos helps, the danger passes, and the person rises from his sickbed, then it is: “Out, Most Holy Theotokos; we do not need you now. Now we will make men’s trousers. Now we will not have children. Now, now, now we will do so many things. Out, Most Holy Theotokos!” And the Most Holy Theotokos goes out. “When we need you, we will call you again. For now we have the world, the flesh, fashion, our ego, our interests, and all our affairs. Out, our Lady, the Most Holy Theotokos—out!” This is what we are like. People do not want Christ, the Theotokos, or the Saints involved in their business. They do not want them involved in their relationships or in their life generally. Did you see what they did to Him today? “Go away from here,” they told Him. “Depart from our region.” Why?

Because He caused us to lose two thousand pigs—ten thousand, a hundred thousand okas of meat. Do you understand? “Since You harm our interests, we do not want You.” That is exactly what happens. “Keep away from the cashbox. You will not tell me whether I may steal, whether I may lie with my tongue, or cheat with the scales or the measure. I have taxes and expenses to pay; a person cannot live with the Cross in his hand. Out with Christ!” Christ leaves, and falsehood is proclaimed. “Out of the house, Christ! You will not tell me how many children to have. I know. I need so much for the young lady, so much for the piano, so much for his car, and so much for his room. Out, Lord Jesus Christ!” “Very well, My child. If you want Me out because I cost you something, because I remind you that things are not as you claim and that what you are saying is unlawful, then I will go.”

The true center of gravity lies elsewhere. The question is not how your son will live, but whether your son will be saved, whether his soul will be saved. If he becomes a shoeshine boy in Omonia Square, it makes no difference. Let him be a carpenter with calloused hands. The Apostle Paul made tents. What are your son or my daughter to become? If their souls are not going to be saved, it would be better for them not to exist, to depart now and be buried now. That would be to their benefit. This is how Christ speaks, but we do not agree. And so, my children, they leave. Today they drove Christ away because He reminded them that what they were doing was neither right nor moral. The law forbade those people to eat pork. Our minds cannot grasp these things, and we think that God is to blame, circumstances are to blame, the Church is to blame, the priests are to blame, or those who govern are to blame. Our own sin is to blame. No one else is to blame—our own sin is.

If we repent, confess, and return to Christ, things will change: in the family, which will no longer face so many hardships; in society; in the Church; and throughout the whole world. Christ insists that His justice be carried out. No one will escape Him. Death will take a small plank and say, “Here you are, little one; it is time to give an account.” Whoever you may be in this world, however great you may be, even if you have reached the stars like Gagarin, you will come here to give an account. If only people would reflect deeply on this thought, things would be very different. Yes, we do not want Christ, just as those people did not want Him today and drove Him away. But know this: Christ is the only One who never imposes Himself. He does not wish to distress a person even by force.

“You do not want Me? Then I will leave. But take care that you do not find yourself calling for Me, and take care when we meet again, there where eight hands and eight feet will carry you, whether you want it or not, whether you believe it or not. Woe to you then!” Christ alone never imposes Himself. When He sees sullen faces, frowns, and gloom, when He hears murmuring, He leaves the home, He leaves one’s health, He leaves the family—He leaves everything. Christ alone never imposes Himself. He remains steadfast and dignified, saying, “Whenever you wish. Do you want Me to come and take charge of you? The things you have entangled and now think cannot be untangled, and the problems you yourself have created—I will settle them for you.”

“The debts you have incurred—I will put your affairs in order.” Blessed is the person who understands this. But the outcome is that when the devil comes out of a person, everything changes. Those people should have regarded our Christ as their foremost benefactor, because they had been unable to pass along that road on account of those demons. He had delivered them from the demons, and He had also delivered that man, whom they surely saw and pitied as he wandered naked and exposed in the wilderness, wearing little bells.

They should have thanked Him from the depths of their hearts, come to their senses, and understood that they had received the just consequences of their actions. Instead, they drove Christ away and remained with Satan once again. The devil came out of the demoniac and entered those who should have thanked Christ. But there is a beautiful continuation to the story of the...

...man who was now in his right mind and clothed, sitting at Christ’s feet. The poor man was afraid of Satan—afraid that he might overpower and conquer him again—so he asked to go with Christ. But Christ did not take him along. He told him, “Remain here. Go back to your own country and tell what God has done for you.” Therefore, Christ is God. The Jehovah’s Witnesses deny that Christ is God. But Satan says to Him, “What have I to do with You, Son”—not a creature, not an archangel, not something created—“Son of God Most High?” Yet people reject Christ as God; they reject His divinity. “Go, My child,” He tells him, “to your own country and tell them what God has done for you: that you had a legion of demons within you, six thousand devils, and that I cast them out. Tell them that. It is enough.”

We think we must be theologians in order to speak about Christ, about the faith, and about religion to those who come after us. It requires no expense, nor must you have studied at a university in order to speak about Christ. Give thanks. Speak. Tell your children, your grandchildren, and the others you meet about the miracles you have seen in your life from Christ, from the Most Holy Theotokos, and from the Saints. Sadly, we are forgetful, like the nine lepers about whom Christ complained: “But where are the nine?” Only one returned to give thanks. There is no Greek home that has not witnessed miracles from the Most Holy Theotokos, from Christ, from Saint Nektarios of Aegina, from Saint Paraskevi, from Saint Raphael, and from all the newly revealed Saints. There is no such home. If only a person would dwell on this alone...

...it would be the greatest theology and would render the greatest service. “Do this, My child,” He tells him. “Go and tell them: ‘I am the man who lived out there all those years with six thousand devils inside me—a whole legion—and this Man cast them out with a single word. That is all I have to tell you.’” And it will be enough. For when a person tells those who come after him the story of his life, he is doing nothing less than confessing his faith and bearing witness to the Gospel in action. The miracles that take place are one aspect of our true faith. The Saints work them; our Most Holy Theotokos works them; and we experience them. Or are they merely coincidence? Chance? Has science explained this? Science—especially unbelieving science—cannot comprehend miracles, because faith is needed to understand the miracle...

...and to receive the miracle. Therefore, we do not need to be theologians. If we wish, we can help spread the Word of God. Especially today, when our age is so enlightened by a thousand other things, the Word of God is left behind, though it could reach so many. I remember once speaking to an audience. Every place was filled, and many people had come and were standing behind me. At one point, as I stood speaking from a step, I heard a woman’s voice behind me say, “Oh, if only these words had wings!” I did not turn to see who had said it, but I kept the remark in mind. When I had finished, I turned and asked, “Which of you said those words while I was speaking?” A lady I knew, a very wealthy woman...

...said, “I did, Mr. Panagopoulos.” “What did you say?” I asked. “Could you repeat it?” She replied, “If only your words had wings, so that they could travel throughout the whole world and others could hear them.” “And do they not have wings?” I asked. “No, they do not,” she said. “They do not,” I replied, “because you have their wings inside your purse, in your handbag. As you can see, these talks are being recorded. If you were willing to open your handbag and obtain five thousand tapes, you could send them throughout the world. There are the wings, sitting right there.” Today, when so much sin circulates in writing, in typescript, and in recordings—when so much filth is circulated—why should the words of God not circulate as well?

Have you ever bought a book to give to someone? Let me ask you: have you ever bought a book? Have you ever said, “I will not smoke today,” or “I will not eat this sweet today,” or “I will not waste this money today; I will deny myself so that I can buy a book and send it to someone whom I know needs it”? Have you ever bought a recording and sent it to anyone? Have you ever done anything like that? How will the truth spread? People will remain covered by ignorance, while we imagine ourselves to be Christians and hide behind one little candle. That is a mistake. Let us pay attention to this. We all have an obligation to tell what God has done. Sadly, we are ungrateful toward God, and once again we will be punished. In two days we celebrate our deliverance: how our Most Holy Theotokos sheltered us, how she stood beside every soldier in Albania. I know this from personal experience, because I was there. Yet people will not come forward to give thanks. They will attribute that victory to themselves, not to the Most Holy Theotokos, not to Christ, and not to the Saints...

...to Saint Demetrios and the others. They will credit themselves, and so God, in their eyes, deserves nothing. The Gerasenes did exactly the same thing. By extension, we see that Gerasenes still exist in our own day, and they will continue to exist. Therefore, let us be on our guard, because Satan is cunning. Satan has countless devices and countless traps. He even claims a large share of us who are inside the Church. Some he has shut outside, so that they do not come here at all. They are occupied with their sweetheart, their card games, their outings—they are with the devil. Others came here, but only when they wished and in whatever manner they pleased. They did not come to fulfill the true purpose of being in the Church. They did not come today having repented and confessed. They did not come today to receive Holy Communion. Satan does not allow them; sin does not allow them. They came to Church and think they have fulfilled their duty. No! The main question is whether you have fear of God, faith, and love. That is the very essence of life in the Church.

“With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” But I do not draw near. Then why did you come? And even those of us who have come and may, for example, draw near to the Holy Eucharist will find Satan casting another logismos—an intrusive thought—into our nous, our spiritual intellect, saying, “Did you see that other woman? She is a sinner. You are holy.” How can you escape him? Outside, inside, in the innermost depths—how can you escape him? Struggle is necessary, my beloved. Let us not forget this person. This is why Christ came into the world and died; this is why He still bears with humanity. Satan is the one against whom we shall wrestle. He is like the whetstone barbers use to sharpen their blades. They have a stone, and on it they sharpen the razor’s edge. That is Satan. God did not create him as Satan. God makes use of him, because if Satan were removed...

Διδάγματα που απορρέουν από... Από αυτή τη συνάντηση με τον Χριστό. Ακόμη, ένας άνθρωπος μπορεί να κινείται πολλές φορές από πολλούς σατανάδες, και θα το έχετε υπόψη σας. Πολλοί υβρίζουν τους ανθρώπους και τους λένε ζώα. «Φεύγα, ζώον, από εδώ». Μα το ζώον γιατί το υβρίζεις; Κάνει τίποτα το ζώον έξω από το βασίλειό του; Δεν κάνει τίποτα το ζώον. Για λέτε, ποια είναι πονηρά;

Σε βάζω να σε γκρεμίσω στον κρημνό, μα κάνεις πίσω, μου δαγκώνεις τα χέρια. Πώς εδώ σου άρεσε η πορνεία, πώς η μοιχεία, πώς το σκότωμα του παιδιού σου, πώς η κλοπή, πώς η λωποδυσία; Άρα ήθελες. Η αμαρτία γίνεται όπως έγινε η πρώτη αμαρτία επί Αδάμ και Εύας. Υπέδειξε ο διάβολος, του ανθρώπου του άρεσε, έπραξε και απέθανε. Έτσι γίνεται πάντοτε η αμαρτία. Είναι, λοιπόν, μια στιγμή η σημερινή που διδάσκει ότι υπάρχει και τρίτο πρόσωπο. Πολλοί σκανδαλίζονται καμιά φορά όταν ακούνε αυτά τα περιστατικά του σημερινού Ευαγγελίου. Κατηγορούν, φερ’ ειπείν, τον Χριστό που επέτρεψε σε δύο χιλιάδες χοίρους να πέσουν στη λίμνη και να ζημιωθούν οι άνθρωποι. Ναι, γιατί το έκανε; Οι χοίροι δεν είναι δικοί του; Είναι των ανθρώπων οι χοίροι;

«Παναγία μου, βοήθα». Ναι, αλλά μόλις η Παναγία βοηθήσει και αποφύγει ο κίνδυνος και σηκωθεί ο άνθρωπος από το κρεβάτι, έξω Παναγία, δεν σε χρειαζόμεθα τώρα. Τώρα θα ράψουμε ανδρικό παντελόνι. Τώρα εμείς δεν θα κάνουμε παιδιά. Τώρα, τώρα, τώρα θα κάνουμε τόσα πράγματα. Έξω Παναγία. Και βγαίνει έξω η Παναγία. Όταν σε χρειαστούμε, θα ξανασεκαλέσουμε. Τώρα έχουμε και κόσμο, έχουμε και σάρκα, έχουμε και μόδα, έχουμε και εγώ, έχουμε και συμφέροντα, έχουμε πράγματα. Έξω, Κυρία Παναγία, έξω η Παναγία. Εμείς είμαστε αυτοί. Δεν τον θέλει ο άνθρωπος, τον Χριστόν και την Θεοτόκον και τους Αγίους, στο εμπόριό του. Δεν τον θέλει στη σχέση του γενικά. Είδατε σήμερα τι του κάμανε; «Να φύγεις», του λένε, «από εδώ, έξελθε εκ των ορίων μας». Γιατί;

λέγει: «Εγώ», μου λέει, «κύριε Παναγόπουλε». «Τι είπατε», λέγω, «μπορείτε να το επαναλάβετε;» «Να είχανε», λέει, «φτερά τα λόγια σου, να πηγαίνανε στον κόσμο όλον, να τα ακούσουν και άλλοι». «Και δεν έχουν;» λέγω. Μου λέει: «Δεν έχουν». «Δεν έχουν», λέγω, «γιατί τα έχεις εσύ μέσα στο πορτοφόλι σου, στην τσάντα σου τα έχεις εσύ. Όπως βλέπεις», λέω, «γράφονται αυτά. Και αν εσύ ήθελες να ανοίξεις την τσάντα σου, να πάρεις πέντε χιλιάδες κασέτες, θα τα στείλεις στον κόσμο. Να τα φτερά που κάθονται εκεί». Σήμερα που κυκλοφορεί τόση αμαρτία, γραμμένη και γραφομηχανημένη και μαγνητοφωνημένη, τόσες βρωμιές κυκλοφορούν, γιατί να μην κυκλοφορούν και τα λόγια του Θεού;
