Summary

Christ is the center of human salvation, while the Theotokos and the saints receive their light from him and intercede on behalf of believers. Abraham’s willing offering of Isaac foreshadows the Father’s sacrifice of his beloved Son, with Isaac carrying the wood as Christ carried the Cross. Christians must respond to salvation through repentance, confession, Holy Communion, obedience, and a fervent personal love for Christ.

I brought up something that has been very much alive in my mind these past few days. Because so much has been said, we were not given the opportunity to be edified as much as we might have been. As I told you last night, many prophecies speak very vividly about our Christ. For the whole matter of mankind’s salvation revolves around Christ. The one person we fail to esteem as we should is Christ. We are devoted to the saints; we are devoted to the Most Holy Theotokos.

But we are not devoted to Christ. Of course, when we venerate His Mother so deeply, and His saints as well, we do so for His sake. For if He were not at the center, there would be neither the Most Holy Theotokos nor any saints. It is like the sun, the moon, and the stars. The sun is Christ, the moon is the Theotokos, and the stars are the saints. The Theotokos, like the moon, and the saints, like the stars, shine with borrowed light. If the sun disappears, they can do nothing. Therefore, the center of gravity, the heart of this serious matter, is the person of Christ. That is why Satan wages war against Christ. He seeks by every means to obscure His person. Yet our Most Holy Theotokos herself directs us toward Christ. Today, especially in our homeland, people have established what they call “schools of the Most Holy Theotokos.” What does “schools of the Most Holy Theotokos” mean? Does the Most Holy Theotokos save people today through her schools? And they say that whoever does not belong to her school cannot be saved. Are you seriously saying such things? Is it the school of Christ or the school of the Most Holy Theotokos? The Most Holy Theotokos does not establish a school. These are inventions of our imagination. The school of Christ is His Church, the Orthodox Church. Salvation is found there. The Most Holy Theotokos does not save.

She intercedes. Do you not say here, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us,” and also, “Save us, O Son of God”? When we say, “Most Holy Theotokos, save us,” we are asking that our homes not be destroyed and that the Turks not overrun us. She delivers us from earthquakes, locusts, and such calamities—that is the sense in which we say, “Save us.”

But can she save us for the Kingdom of Heaven? Christ is the key to the Kingdom of Heaven; it is through Him that a person enters the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, we must understand this correctly. All the saints intercede, but Christ saves. Our Most Holy Theotokos has great boldness before Christ. After God comes the Most Holy Theotokos, as we say: “After God, we have you as our only hope.” Yet she intercedes, and the person must also be willing, if he is to be saved.

Do you remember what happened at the wedding in Cana of Galilee? When the wine ran out, what did our Most Holy Theotokos say? What did she say to Christ? “They have no wine.” And He replied, “Woman, what is that to Me and to you?” Why should it concern us if they have no wine? They are the ones holding the celebration; let them also see to the wine. Why are you telling Me? Christ knew why she was telling Him, and our Most Holy Theotokos knew why she was telling Him. She knew that Christ worked miracles, although He had not yet performed one publicly. He had worked miracles privately, however, and that is precisely why she asked Him to deliver them from their difficulty. Christ understood; He discerned the spirit of our Most Holy Theotokos, and so He said, “My hour has not yet come.” The time has not yet come for Me to begin working miracles.

I have no intention of beginning My miracles in this little village of Cana here in Galilee. Yet our Most Holy Theotokos persists. She turns to the servants and says, “Whatever He tells you, do it.” I have spoken to Him, but now the miracle will happen only if you do what He tells you. I cannot make Him do whatever I want. He will do this if you do what He commands you. This is what our Most Holy Theotokos always says. She intercedes, presents us before Christ, and says, “We are sending You this child as well.” If that child then does whatever Christ commands, the matter is resolved for him. But if a person does not do what Christ desires, neither the Most Holy Theotokos nor all the millions of saints can help him.

I say this again because people do not give our Christ the place He deserves. We must reach the point of having an all-consuming love for Him. Think of two people in love who, because of their love, throw themselves from a cliff and take their own lives, feeling that they cannot do otherwise. In just this way, a person should be utterly in love with Christ. I repeat: Christ is hidden even from the Orthodox. The Protestants speak a great deal about Christ, while the Catholics speak a great deal about the Most Holy Theotokos. But neither side has the truth in its fullness. The truth is here, in Orthodoxy: Christ saves, while the Theotokos intercedes and stands beautifully at His right hand.

David saw her in precisely this place a thousand years before Christ. In Psalm 44 he writes, “The queen stood at Your right hand,” and, “clothed in a garment woven with gold, arrayed in many colors.” These are also the words the priest says when he removes the portion for our Most Holy Theotokos during the Proskomedia, there where we bring our offering loaf. He says these words concerning our Most Holy Theotokos. Now let me return to where I began. All the prophecies we have mentioned—some written a thousand years beforehand, some fifteen hundred years beforehand, and some events taking place eighteen hundred years beforehand—all spoke about Christ. For He was the One who would ascend the Cross; He was the One who would be crucified and die in order to raise mankind.

Is the human being shaped like a cross, or not? He is. And the living Cross died as a cross in order to raise the dead cross, the human being. Indeed, in the Old Testament there is also a miracle performed by the Prophet Elisha, who, as you know, raised the son of the Shunammite woman. He stretched out his arms in the form of a cross. The child lay dead beneath him, and Elisha lay upon him with his own arms outstretched, his mouth upon the child’s mouth, his lips upon his lips, and so forth. In this way he imparted warmth to him and restored him to life. The living cross raised and gave life to the dead cross. The human being, then, is a cross and was given life through Christ—through Christ. The Crucifixion of Christ is the summit, the highest point of this whole great mystery.

This theme has been set before us during Holy Week, and even now our Holy Church continues to speak about the mysteries of Christ. Among the many prophecies—such as those I explained to you last night concerning His burial and His Resurrection—there is one prophecy I wanted to bring forward this evening. It concerns a type, a foreshadowing, of Christ that was offered in sacrifice in the Old Testament. You may remember from school that, among the other things we were taught, we also heard about Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac. This event took place eighteen hundred years before Christ and prefigured Golgotha.

Do you know where Abraham offered Isaac? On Golgotha, where Christ was sacrificed eighteen hundred years later. And do you know that the tree from that time is still there? Listen, then. I shall read it to you from chapter 22 of Genesis. Those of you who have an Old Testament can easily find it and read it, from verses 1 through 18. Listen to what it says: “After these things, God tested Abraham.” He gave him a temptation, a trial. You know that Abraham had no child.

God gave him Isaac at a very advanced age, miraculously, because Sarah was an elderly woman, ninety years old. A woman does not give birth at ninety, yet God granted it. When the angel came to the Oak of Mamre, which we shall consider this evening, where Abraham lived, the three angels came—serving as a type of the Holy Trinity—and Abraham received them as guests. The angel said that by the following year Sarah would be holding a child in her arms. And she laughed. She thought, “An elderly woman like me, holding a child now? What are they saying?” And he said to her, “Why did you laugh?” She replied, “I did not laugh.” A woman’s little falsehood. “You did laugh,” he told her. “Next year you will have a child in your arms.”

And indeed, wondrously, that elderly woman held a child in her arms. “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” Do not rely too heavily on doctors in matters of childbearing, for God does not permit any woman or married couple to be put to shame, even when every natural possibility appears to have been closed. Christ does not simply endorse the doctors’ verdict. The power of our Christ is revealed when nature offers no help. When the doctors have ruled out every possibility and declared all hope dead from the outset, then the power of Christ is made manifest. No woman who went against her doctor’s command was put to shame; she gave birth, she has her child, and the child is well. This is Christ. That is where His power is revealed.

The words of Paul are always fulfilled: “My strength is made perfect in weakness.” The power of God is revealed precisely where nature and human ability can offer no help. In any case, God tested Abraham. And how did He test him? “Abraham, Abraham,” He called. And Abraham answered, “Here I am.” Then God said, “Take your beloved son, whom you love, Isaac, and go into the high land, and offer him there as a whole burnt offering”—sacrifice him there. We should note that God had previously told him that through this child his descendants would become as numerous as the sand of the sea. Through this very child. Yet now He tells him to go and slaughter him. Well, God, when are You telling the truth? Were You telling the truth yesterday, or are You telling the truth today? Reverence means that when God speaks, we do not place a question mark in the middle. God speaks. So the elder Abraham steeled his heart. Without dwelling upon this matter or upon God’s promise, he took the child and went to offer him. He did not question God or remind Him of His promise, as we would have done forty times over: “When were You telling me the truth? You said this child would be the reason my descendants became like the sand of the sea. Now You tell me to slaughter him. How can this happen?” Nevertheless, God told him to go.

“Offer him there as a whole burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you”—on one of the mountains, not simply on the mountain, but on one of the mountains I shall point out. You know, Mount Moriah mentioned here has three peaks. Golgotha is there, and the place where Abraham offered Isaac is there; there are three peaks, along with another one. God says, “I shall show you on which peak you are to sacrifice your son, so that we may establish the type, the foreshadowing, and when I sacrifice My own Son, people may recognize that He truly is the Christ, the awaited Messiah.” “So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two servants and Isaac his son.”

“He split the wood for the whole burnt offering, rose, and went.” He did not wait for daylight, in case God might change His mind. He went very early in the morning. He obeyed the command at once, first thing in the morning. God had spoken. Abraham even split the wood and loaded it onto the mule so that he would have it when he reached his destination. Would he find wood there? And what kind of wood would he find? He would have to cut green branches from the trees, and those would not burn. So he took suitable wood with him, so that he would encounter no difficulty in what he had set out to do. He also took two of his servants and Isaac. “And he came to the place of which God had told him. On the third day...” He had traveled

for three days to reach the place God had shown him. These three days signify the three years of Christ’s public ministry, until He reached Golgotha to be sacrificed. Where Abraham had earlier offered his only-begotten son, there God also sacrificed His Only-Begotten Son. Where Abraham had offered his beloved son, there God also sacrificed His Beloved Son.

“Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar, and Abraham said to his servants...” He saw the hills in the distance and told the servants, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there, and after we have worshiped...” “We shall return to you.” Abraham spoke an untruth here, but an innocent one—not a lie intended to cause another person moral or material harm. He knew that he was going to sacrifice the child. Yet he said, “You wait here, and we shall go to worship and then return to you.” “Stay here with the donkey. Then Abraham took the wood for the whole burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son.” He took the wood down from the mule and loaded it onto Isaac. And now Isaac climbed the mountain with his father, carrying the wood upon which he himself would be sacrificed.

Then, eighteen hundred years later, Christ likewise ascended Golgotha carrying His own wood, the Cross upon which He would be sacrificed. On the way, a conversation took place between Isaac and Abraham.

“Abraham himself took the fire in his hands and the knife.” He loaded the wood upon the child, while he himself carried the fire and the knife, “and the two of them went on together.”

Then Isaac said to Abraham, “Father.” And he replied, “What is it, my child?” What do you want? Isaac said, “Here are the fire, the knife, and the wood; but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” We are carrying the fire and the wood. We have the knife. But what are we going to slaughter? Which lamb? Where is the sheep? You understand what a difficult position this put the elder in.

His heart was heavy, because he was going to sacrifice his only son and be deprived of the light of his eyes; for children, those supreme blessings of God, are the very eyes of their parents. Abraham promptly replied, “God will provide Himself a sheep for the burnt offering, my child.” “God will provide the sheep, my child,” he told him. Abraham knew with complete certainty that he was going to sacrifice his son. He did not expect to find a sheep there. Yet, in a manner of speaking, he uttered a prophecy. For afterward it became clear that God did not want Isaac himself to be sacrificed as a person. It was enough for Him to establish the type, the foreshadowing of what was to come.

God had His own Lamb whom He was going to sacrifice: our Lord Jesus Christ, “slain from the foundation of the world.” Have you ever read in the Apocalypse the words, “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”? For in the eyes of God, in the plan of God, Christ had been slain from the very beginning. It did not begin only when the Honorable Forerunner said, “Behold the Lamb of God; behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” It went back far earlier. In any case, “the two went on together, and they came to the place of which God had spoken to him, and Abraham built the altar there.” They reached Golgotha. The two summits of Golgotha—the summit where Christ was sacrificed and the place where Isaac was to be sacrificed—are about thirty meters apart.

When they arrived, Abraham built the altar, as Scripture says, and laid the wood upon it. “And he bound Isaac his son and laid him upon the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham stretched out his hand to take the knife and slay his son.” Abraham was about one hundred years old when Sarah conceived. And since the son was now strong enough to carry a load of wood on his shoulder, he must have been a young man of twenty or twenty-five. Abraham, therefore, must have been about one hundred and twenty-five years old, and his son about twenty-five.

If the son had not consented, and the elder had tried to seize him, pin him down upon the fire on the altar, and raise the knife to cut off his head, the young man could have struck the elder once and sent him flying ten meters. “Have you lost your mind? What are you doing?” Would he not have resisted? That is what reason tells us. And yet the young man did not resist. He accepted being sacrificed because the Father willed it. What did the Church say about Christ during these days? “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion.” Christ came willingly and was crucified. How many of you are from the Peloponnese? How many are from Monemvasia? Do you know the icon there of Christ Elkomenos—Christ Drawn to the Passion?

It is there in Monemvasia, in the castle, near the church of the Most Holy Theotokos Chrysafitissa. When you go there and look at the iconostasis, where the icon of Christ the Great High Priest stands, you see Christ being drawn eagerly toward His Passion, longing for the hour when He will arrive to be sacrificed. There you will understand how great Christ’s love is for mankind. He could have sacrificed Himself a thousand times more for mankind, if only He could save even one person in this way. To us, of course, this seems beyond reason; but that is how things are, my beloved, that is how they are. In any case, this is what happened. At the very moment Abraham raised his hand to slay the child, an angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham.” And he replied, “Here I am.” And the angel said:

“Do not lay your hand upon the boy, nor do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since for My sake you did not spare your beloved son.” You did not hold back from sacrificing this child for Me. Do not lay your hand upon him. Abraham was startled there in the wilderness. It was desolate in that place, eighteen hundred years before Christ. What could have been there? He turned toward the place from which he had heard the voice, and what did he see? He saw a tree—a tree which remains there to this day—and among its low branches was a ram whose horns had become entangled in the wood. That tree is called Sabek in Hebrew, meaning “the wood of forgiveness.” Behold the Cross, the wood of forgiveness, and behold the Lamb upon the wood. Abraham took that ram, slaughtered it, and offered it in sacrifice. This was the lamb of God, the Lamb of God who would be sacrificed in the very place where Abraham had established the type through Isaac. “Do not lay your hand upon the boy,” the angel said. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw. What did he see? “Behold, a ram caught by its horns in the plant Sabek.” Its horns were entangled, and it was held fast in the tree called Sabek, which, as I have told you, means “the wood of forgiveness.”

Abraham went, took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering in place of Isaac his son. Thus the prophecy he had made along the way was fulfilled. At first glance, his words might have seemed untrue, but they were words from God: “God will provide a sheep for the sacrifice, my child.” It makes no difference that, at that moment, Abraham believed the sheep would be Isaac. His words were fulfilled. And Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord has seen,” so that people say to this day, “On the mountain the Lord was seen.” Then an angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time, saying, “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord: because you have done this thing and have not withheld…”

“…your beloved son from Me, surely I will bless you, and greatly multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven and like the sand on the seashore; and your descendants shall inherit the cities of their enemies,” and so on. So I ask you: is not the whole mystery of Christ present in this prophecy? The Father sacrifices the Son. The Son willingly accepts the sacrifice. Isaac carries up the wood upon which he is to be bound, and Christ carries His own wood to that same place. Did Abraham not journey for three days, just as Christ’s public ministry lasted three years? Did this not happen at Golgotha, upon Moriah? And yet it passed unnoticed. Why all this labor? Why all this preparation extending over so many thousands of years? Because mankind must…

…learn it, pay attention to it, and come to know it. Do you understand? Let me speak to you about something I had the opportunity to mention here the other day, on the feast of the Life-Giving Spring, during the Communion hymn. It is something everyone must learn: both those who are present and those who may hear these words through recordings or radio broadcasts. On the feast of the Life-Giving Spring, the Church also celebrated the dedication of a church of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Life-Giving Spring, there in Constantinople. When someone hears…

…“We are celebrating the dedication of the holy church,” and so forth, he may even laugh. What does it mean to celebrate the dedication of a church? Is it really so important that generations should concern themselves with church dedications? Yes, it is important—extremely important. But we do not understand these matters correctly. We do not know what a temple is, why it is needed, or what purpose it serves. There are, of course, two temples. One is the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is the human soul. The other is the church building into which we enter, containing all the things that help us contemplate what takes place in heaven.

The candle stand over there, for example, where we light a candle, makes its own confession of faith. We look up at the chandelier, and it too makes its confession. The pulpit, as I was telling you, has its confession. The Beautiful Gate has its confession. Everything is in its proper place and reminds us of the realities of heaven. Up there is the Church Triumphant. These candle stands below represent the Church Militant. When a person enters a properly ordered church, where everything is placed as it should be, there is much by which he can be benefited and edified. If you look at the candle stands and see how they are made…

…you should understand at once that they could not have been made that way without meaning. Usually the large candle stands here before the icons of the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ have three branches at the top: one, two, three. Around them is a broad tier with various sockets. A central pillar also descends all the way to the bottom, where it again stands upon three supports. That is the proper form of a candle stand. Nowadays, fashion and parish trustees who do not understand these matters choose whatever pleases them and place it in the Church. Properly, there should be three branches at the top—two with one in the middle, making three. The pillar should descend to a base of three supports, while above it should be a broad tier with sockets where each person may place a candle. This represents…

…the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: the Holy Trinity. One person of the Holy Trinity descended from there and came down to earth: Christ. Although He came down to earth, He never ceased to be with the Father and the Holy Spirit. We now enter the church, the sacred temple. When we come to the candle stand, we find ourselves dead inside a coffin. The candles represent us, and each socket is a coffin. That is every human being. You give your coin, take the candle that represents you, and place it upon the candle stand. Christ descended upon what this candle stand represents. You place your candle there and say, “I was dead, but now I am alive. Through Christ I am alive. I too am light from Light—not possessing light from myself, but receiving it from Him.”

This light shines, gives warmth, and benefits those around it. So too, as I now offer this candle through my life, I say: “Help me, Lord, to be light for others, to be warmth for others, to become something for the sake of others.” Yet often we light a candle while holding our noses. We are good for nothing. We light it without knowing what the candle represents. This is what is called the Church Militant. But when we die, we shall go up to the chandelier. That depends upon us. Here above is Christ the Pantocrator. As for the chandelier, do not judge by this church, which is only a temporary structure. In a church built as it truly should be, there is a dome above with Christ the Pantocrator, who holds all things, and the chandelier descends beneath it, and so forth. Thank you.

We must go to Christ the Pantocrator. We must become true lights here, so that we may ascend there. Otherwise we shall go down, to Hades. If we are condemned—if we do not depart this life rightly prepared, having repented, made our confession, and received Holy Communion—we shall go down. But our purpose is to go up. The Church Triumphant, then, is made up of those who have passed beyond the grave, while we are the people here below. All these things are taught within the sacred temple, not in the coffeehouse, at the racetrack, on paper, in an embrace, or through charitable works. They are taught here, in the church. Here you will see the Most Holy Theotokos, and there Eve. Here you will see the New Adam, Christ. Here you will see the Beautiful Gate, through which you will pass to enter within: the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Gospel, the Annunciation, Hesychios the Priest, the Annunciation…

…the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. There is food here. What does the hymn say? “The fatted calf is abundant; let everyone feast.” Is that not what Christ said? The purpose of the church is to prepare food for human souls. A person who comes to Church without intending to receive Holy Communion has no reason to be there. However harsh this may sound, he has no reason to be there—unless he is under a canon. Perhaps he has made his confession and has been given a canon for forty days, one year, two years, or two months. Apart from that, what business does he have here? For what will he say when the priest comes out and calls, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near”? What can he say? If I do not possess these things, what am I doing here? To come here means that you have faith, that you have love, and that you believe.

The Church asks only these few things, and yet a person comes, lights a candle—really a little piece of paraffin rather than true beeswax—and thinks that this is everything. At the end he will take the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, and leave. If people knew what antidoron meant, they would never take it so casually in their lives. Ask the bread what it is called. Ask what it says after you take it: “What is your name?” “My name is antidoron.” What does that mean? “I am not the Gift. I am given in place of the Gift.” And what is the Gift? It is what came forth in the Holy Chalice. That is the Gift. Go and receive that. If you do not receive it, I will give you only a small blessing: “May the blessing and mercy of the Lord come upon us”—not salvation. A person may eat five pieces of antidoron…

…and drink two tons of the Agiasmos, even the water from the Great Blessing, and still go to Hell if he does not receive Holy Communion. And why does he not receive Holy Communion? Because he refuses to give up sin. He has no true purpose. This Church, which contains these Mysteries and all these sacred realities, had as its type in the Old Testament the Ark of Noah.

Noah’s Ark took one hundred years to build, because Noah was five hundred years old when he received the command and six hundred when he completed it. It took Noah a full hundred years to build the Ark. And yet not one of the craftsmen entered it. Not one entered. Animals were saved.

Snakes were saved, crocodiles were saved, ravens and sheep were saved, yet the craftsmen who built the Ark were not saved. They thought the elder Noah was sick in the head because he was building a ship on dry land—for the Ark was not built by the sea, but on dry land. What a strange man, they thought. They took his money, earned their wages, and made sport of the elder. But when the elder went inside, the door was shut from the outside, and the flood came, they must have watched the Ark rising and run to cling to it from the outside. But it was closed. That was the end. They drowned; not one remained. Those who stayed inside survived—and they survived not merely because they had entered,

for many will say to me, “We too are inside the Ark. We attend church; we go to Vespers and Matins,” and so on. No. They survived not merely because they entered, but because they were fed inside; they ate from the provisions kept there. For God had given Noah a special command to take the proper food not only for the people but also for the animals, so that nothing would perish. During the six months when it rained and the Ark was upon the waters, not one animal and not one human being died. They were fed. And when the Ark came to rest on Ararat and was opened, they were all alive, because they had been fed. If they had gone inside but had not eaten, what would have happened? They would have died and become corpses inside the Ark.

Some would have been dead outside and others dead inside. My dear ones, how often do we encounter the living dead in the Bible? And who has ever stopped to wonder whether he himself might be living yet dead, even while coming to church? What does this mean? Do you remember the young man who once spoke to Christ, in a Gospel passage read during Holy Unction?

“Lord,” he said, “permit me to go and bury my father.” “No,” the Lord told him, “you shall not go.” “My father?” “No, you shall not go.” “Then who will bury my father?” “Let the dead bury their own dead.” There are people wearing neckties in your village; they will bury your father. Did the Lord tell him, “Come, follow Me,” and then let him go?

How many of the dead are below the ground, and how many are above it? All of them. What did the father say to the elder brother concerning the younger brother, the Prodigal Son? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” He had never died bodily. He was dead because he was far from his father’s house—far, as we might say, from the Church. He was living, yet dead. He was dead and came to life again because he repented with metanoia, made his confession, ate of the fatted calf, and received Holy Communion. He was lost and was found. What does the Apocalypse say to one of the bishops? “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” What did Paul say about widows who do not remain honorable in their widowhood? That they are dead. Though bodily alive, they are spiritually dead. So there is such a thing as spiritual death.

What did the Lord say about the man who fell among thieves? The Samaritan placed him on his own animal and took him to the inn. What is the inn? And he entrusted him to the innkeeper. Who is the innkeeper? He told him to care for the man, and that whatever more he spent, he would repay him when he returned. What do these things mean? The inn is the Church, and the innkeepers are the clergy. Christ departed, and He will return. And the clergy will be rewarded for whatever work they have done. He left them two denarii: the Old Testament and the New Testament. He left them Holy Scripture and Tradition. On the basis of these, they are to care for the sick man until he is completely healed. The Church is a great and wondrous thing. You saw what happened in the Ark. The raven remained outside. And what returned inside? The dove. What does this mean?

The devil leaves the Church when a person stands rightly and has a relationship with the Dove, the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost we all kneel here, spread out across the floor, to receive the Holy Spirit. But if you grieve the Holy Spirit, you cannot receive Him unless you cleanse a place where He may rest. When the elder Noah released the dove, it flew and flew and flew outside. He had released the raven first. But the raven found prominent people’s corpses out there and fed upon them. With such a feast, why would it ever return inside? Then Noah released the dove. The dove flew and flew and flew, but it found nowhere to rest its feet. There was filth and stench everywhere, with the corpses of prominent and ordinary people alike. So it returned. The patriarch stretched out his hand and took it back inside.

This is the Spirit. If God made someone a woman and that person lives as a man, will the Dove rest there? Or upon someone whom God made a man and who lives as a woman? Where will it rest? Where will the Holy Spirit rest? Where will this Dove rest? All these things are taught here. They are taught here, inside this very church. Yet people have not valued this church, and its stalls remain empty. And when the stalls in the Church remain empty, the places in Paradise will also remain empty. Our preparation begins here.

Everything begins here; people are prepared here. There is no service station beyond the grave—there is none. You must prepare yourself here, so that when the lens of death captures you, it finds you in a state in which you do not fear the judgment. And yet these things pass unnoticed. That is why building a church is a great event, and preserving a church is also a great event. Why is the Church attacked? Why do worldly people regard it as a priests’ shop, as a business run by the clergy? Because it reproves them; it reproves them. Here they must come and leave their sins behind. Here they must come to make their confession. Here they must come to receive Holy Communion. But they do not live that kind of life. These things do not suit them. God does not suit the life they live in opposition to Him. That is why they attack the Church. They also attack the innkeepers, the clergy, whether they are good or not. For whether a particular priest is good or not is not the point. That is God’s concern.

The priest is an instrument. At least in Orthodoxy, we should be secure on this point. Priests do not act by themselves; grace acts through them. “God does not ordain all, but He acts through all,” says the divine John Chrysostom. Let no one stay away because some innkeeper failed in his duty. No. You must know that the priesthood is the institution attacked most fiercely and systematically by Satan and all his instruments, in order to ensnare people and keep them from coming to church. Satan does not look kindly upon churches. That is why the Church celebrates when a church is consecrated. She makes it a feast. Should she not? And you know what happens in our parishes back home in Greece, where communist groups gather below the churches to hold their discussions and spread communism and atheism. You know what is happening there. It is enough to make you shudder. Even if you traveled another ten thousand miles, you would still encounter it.

You would still see the wretched condition we have down there. God shakes the earth and sets everything trembling—you hear the news of what is happening there. Many people, they say, are returning to the Church; everyone has been terrified. And what will happen next, I do not know. God is trying to awaken us, to shake us out of bed so that we will rise. If we are willing to understand it all, even through such threatening means, we can be benefited. But behind this there is also another matter: our responsibility. We all say that we want the Church, that we love her, and so on. We want the Church to remain standing, to have educated ministers waiting for us and offering us spiritual weapons whenever we come to church. But how will this Church be sustained? We must give money. Yet money alone does not build the Church; the Church also needs people. The Church gives blood, and she asks for blood.

We say, “The priests are no good; the bishops are no good.” Very well, sir—give your own child so that we may replace a priest or a bishop. Give a child from your own honorable and moral family, since you desire the glory of the Church and want the Church to be preserved for the glory of God and the salvation of mankind. Come, bring us one child. Which of us, my dear ones, has given a child to the Church? Which of us has prayed for the Church? Like rodents, from morning until night we devour the priests with our words. And many people do not even know the men they condemn; they merely repeat what they heard and what someone told them. One mouse ate the bread, and we blame all the mice for eating it. Everyone is blamed. Where are we going? How will the Church be saved? There are little children whom God sees from their earliest years and sets apart for the Church.

You see such a child put a sheet around himself, take a milk carton, and imitate the priest—and you say, “God is making a priest here.” You can see that he was made for it from childhood. In the same way, you see another child tightening and loosening screws, and you know he is meant to be an engineer. Or you see a little girl slipping away to sew and make things, and you know she is meant to be a seamstress. But we refuse to see a child given to the Church. One day no priest will be found to bury you, and then you will understand the hour we have reached and the destitution of the Church. You will wait for someone to serve a memorial, you will bring an offering here, and there will be no priest.

Then you will ask, “What is happening?” Let us pray that we never have to experience that. Yet now we sit in the coffeehouse in the evening, cutting and stitching together our criticisms. When that day comes, you will understand what it means to have an Orthodox priest in the Church. Ask the Catholics what it means when their people die, and then you will understand what an Orthodox priest means in the Church. The priest offers the sacrifice and helps the departed through memorial services, offerings, and the sacrifice itself. They do not have this sacrifice. They take their hosts from a bakery and distribute them as communion. There is no sacrifice there. Then people will understand what harm they have done. My dear ones, our knees should become calloused like a goat’s from kneeling and imploring Christ: “My God, might one of my own children come and serve in Your Church?” There is nothing greater, no greater title, no greater ministry.

How sublime!

Saint Kosmas of Aetolia says: If you have one seat before you and there are a king and a priest, give the seat to the priest. If you have one seat and there are a priest and an angel, give the seat to the priest. What is an angel beside a priest? The angel ministers, but the priest celebrates the Divine Liturgy. “He makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.” Do not take a priest upon your tongue and speak against him, or you will be burned. If he is good, he is a glowing coal; if he is bad, he is a blackened coal. Either you will be burned or you will be stained with soot. Do not set yourself against the priest.

Support him and show him compassion, if you can. Never set yourself against a priest, whoever he may be. How does God tolerate our doing so? Ask him even to bless water for you. The very man whom you call all manner of names—ask him to bless water for you, and it will not be rendered ineffective. From this you will understand that God is the One who acts. What God will do with that priest tomorrow has already been appointed. That is God’s business, not mine. The hairs that fell would be gathered and made into—what do we call it?

An amulet. When Greece was liberated in 1944, a British flagship arrived with an English admiral. Papandreou, the elder Papandreou, was then at the forefront of public life and went to Piraeus to welcome him. With his customary eloquence, he told the admiral that he should consider himself the most fortunate member of his family, since God had counted him worthy to be the first to come after the liberation to this land of light and learning. The admiral listened and, with an Englishman’s composure, replied: “Thank you, Mr. President, for the kind words you have spoken about me. But you should know...”

“In our family, the place of honor belongs to a brother of mine who is a priest.” That family had four sons, all of them well established in society and holding high positions in England. Yet they acknowledged that the highest office among the brothers belonged to the one who was a priest—an Anglican priest, not an Orthodox priest. Satan does not fear the Anglican priest, nor the Roman Catholic, nor the Protestant, nor any of them. He fears the Orthodox priest. I say this because our Church is being lost day by day. Here, for many days, the Divine Liturgy was not celebrated because there was no chanter. Yet here in your neighborhood there is a Chinese chanter—Nika knows him—but not one Greek.

Do we even know a single “Holy God”? Even if the devil were to let someone come to the chanter’s stand, that person would have to be free to serve. The same is happening elsewhere, but I will not name the places. I do not wish to offend anyone; I am only speaking with you. The blessing rests upon us. God loves you here, even though you came seeking money and not spiritual light. Remain close to the Church, and implore Christ to choose one of your children for you to give to the Church. Otherwise, it will be too late when the thing I pray will never happen finally comes. I thought I should say these few words as well, because they may benefit you. Many people have a mistaken understanding of the Church and of their obligations toward her.

That is all for now.

«Επίτρεψόν μοι», λέει, «Κύριε, να πάω να θάψω τον πατέρα μου». «Όχι», του λέει, «δεν θα πας». «Τον πατέρα μου;» «Όχι, δεν θα πας». «Και ποιος θα τον θάψει τον πατέρα μου;» «Άφες τους νεκρούς θάψαι τους εαυτών νεκρούς». Είναι μερικοί με γραβάτα στο χωριό σου, θα τον θάψουν τον πατέρα σου. Ή του λέει «έλα κοντά» και τον άφησε να πάει;

Τι είπε για τον περιπεσόντα εις ληστάς; Ότι τον πήρε στο ίδιο κτήνος και τον πήγε στο πανδοχείο. Τι είναι το πανδοχείο; Και τον έδωσε στον πανδοχέα. Τι είναι ο πανδοχέας; Και του είπε να επιμεληθεί και ό,τι προσδαπανήσει, όταν θα ξαναέρθει, θα τον πληρώσει. Τι είναι αυτά; Είναι η Εκκλησία, είναι ο κλήρος. Αυτός έφυγε, ο Χριστός, και θα ξαναέρθει. Και ό,τι εργασία έχουν κάνει οι κληρικοί, θα πληρωθούν. Τους άφησε δύο δηνάρια. Τους άφησε Παλαιά και Καινή Διαθήκη. Τους άφησε Γραφή και Παράδοση. Με βάση αυτά να επιμεληθεί την αποθεραπεία του αρρώστου. Σπουδαίο πράγμα η Εκκλησία. Στην Κιβωτό είδατε τι έγινε. Ο κόρακας έμεινε έξω. Και ποιος εγύρισε μέσα; Η περιστερά. Τι πάει να πει αυτό;

Να τον υποστηρίξεις, να τον συμπαθήσεις, αν μπορείς. Μην τα βάλεις ποτέ σου με τον ιερέα, οποιοσδήποτε και αν είναι. Πως ο Θεός θα ανέχεται; Βάλε και να σου διαβάσει νερό. Αυτόν που τον λες δεν ξέρω πώς εσύ, να είσαι περάσει γενναίες 14, βάλε και να σου διαβάσει νερό, δεν θα χαλάσεις ποτέ. Και από εκεί θα καταλάβεις ότι ο Θεός ενεργεί. Τι θα κάνει μαζί του αύριο, το έχει δρομολογήσει. Δική του δουλειά, δική μου δουλειά. Δική του η θηστολουτήρα και πέφτανε τρίχες, τις μάζευε και τις έκανε. Πώς το λέμε;
