Summary

Christ’s Parable of the Talents presents earthly life as a unique opportunity to fulfill a God-given mission before the Master returns and demands an account. Human differences resemble the members of one body: each person and occupation contributes something necessary to the welfare of the whole community. When the Master returns, every person must answer for the gifts entrusted to them, and faithful stewardship leads to entry into the joy of the Lord.

Continuing this series of talks, and specifically our discussion of the parables spoken by Christ, which contain such profound moral teaching, this evening we shall speak about another parable. This too is called the Parable of the Talents—but it is not the Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents. The Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents is one thing, and the Parable of the Talents is another.

It is a series of teachings from our Lord, recorded in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew. Immediately before it comes the parable known as the Parable of the Ten Virgins.

God willing, we shall speak about that parable in due course as well. Those of you who study Holy Scripture at home will find what we are about to discuss in verse fourteen of the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew. Christ presents Himself as a man—a king, as it says here—who was present, went away, and will return. In the meantime, he left each of his servants with a task to carry out, according to each one’s abilities. And it is understood that he will return and demand an account. We might say that a person is like a merchant who has been entrusted with a certain amount of capital with which to trade, and the one who entrusted it to him expects a good result—a profit. And that is indeed how things are. Unfortunately, however, few people understand this.

Few have grasped this truth and make good use of the opportunity given to them here. A person passes through this earth only once. If he loses this opportunity, he is truly to be pitied. Unfortunately, many people overlook this important point. A person has a purpose while living here on earth. He has not been brought here by chance, nor is his purpose merely to breathe God’s air, consume food, and enjoy all the other good things in the world. All that is nothing compared with his principal purpose. Listen to how the Lord puts it: “For it is as when a man, going on a journey, called his own servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability.” He did not give everyone the same talents. One has five, another two, and another one. But He gave them; they came from Him. Someone might ask, “Why did He not give five talents to everyone? Why did He give two to some and one to others, on a descending scale?” The answer is found in these words: He gave to each according to his own ability.

It was not according to His own desire, as though He simply did not wish to give more, but according to the capacity of the person receiving them. Before God, people are like children of different ages before their father. A father may have one son who is twenty years old, another who is ten, and another who is one. How will he load them? Will he make the little ones carry as much as the eldest? He will give each one a load in proportion to his strength. He may put a hundred grams in the little child’s hand. Another can carry five kilograms, while another can carry twenty or thirty. God, it says, gives each person his talents according to that person’s own ability.

Keep this well in mind, because many people believe they have been treated unjustly when they see others being applauded and admired. “He is intelligent,” they say. “He has a fine voice; he is handsome; he has talent.” Where did he get it? Why does your other son not have it? Did he not come from the same womb, nurse at the same breast, come from the same seed, and grow up in the same surroundings? Why is the other one not the same? Has that never struck you? Yet none of this plays any role in the salvation of the soul. Whether a man becomes a shoemaker repairing shoes or the prime minister, he will surrender a soul to God. He will not present a diploma; he will present his soul in order to enter.

Consequently, a person must stop and reflect. He need only be willing to acknowledge that nothing he has is his own, that everything has been given to him, and then work at the post assigned to him through his talent. Secondly, you have surely seen for yourselves that even when two, three, or five children come from the same parents, they can be completely different in character, intelligence, interests, zeal, and everything else. Therefore, you cannot accuse God, who knows beforehand how much each person is able to bear and does not wish to burden him heavily and then demand too much from him.

If I am entrusted with five million to trade with, I will be required to give an account for five million. You understand how much care, labor, and attention are needed when the sum we are managing is large. But if my turnover is only five hundred drachmas—a few sweets and a few hairpins sold from a little stall—then I do not need all that commotion or elaborate bookkeeping. So it is with human beings. Not everyone is able to carry the same load. That is precisely why He gives to each in proportion, “according to his own ability.” It is not a question of arbitrary preference, as though He wished to endow one man with so many talents while giving the other nothing, or only a little. Two conclusions follow from this.

First, whatever a person has is not his own. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, wishing to guard them against pride, he said, “What do you have that you did not receive?” Tell me: what do you possess that you did not receive, that was not lent to you, that someone else did not give you? Did you bring it yourself from your mother’s womb? Did you make it yourself? Did you labor in order to be able to see? Did you labor in order to hear, to reproduce, or to speak? You did not labor at all. You entered life and found everything ready. Someone else had labored. Someone else made you. Another law was at work. Someone else stands behind it all.

There are people who do not believe these things, while others accept them gladly. God does not draw a pistol and force anyone; He gives people the opportunity to understand how matters truly stand. If they wish to accept it, well and good. If they do not, then let them go their way. God is exceedingly generous. He does them no harm. As you see, He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends His rain upon the righteous and the unrighteous. Such is God. He is not calculating like us, opening His hands only with careful conditions. Blessed are those who understand this and choose to labor humbly, so that when they eventually depart—for they will depart whether they wish to or not—they may be found in harmony with the One who awaits them and will judge them. “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as though you had not received it,” as though it were your own?

It is not yours, and nothing is mine. I am speaking now and you are listening. How does this happen? Who established this relationship between the transmitter and the receiver? Who made it? Our pretensions are laughable. Let all the ear, nose, and throat specialists from every age gather together; they still will not be able to explain how it actually happens.

They can tell us what is involved: the vocal cords, this part and that part, and so forth. But how does it happen? You may say, “Leave aside the ‘what’; tell me how it happens.” They cannot answer how. It is better for a person to believe. Otherwise, anyone who rejects the reality that this is a mystery becomes ridiculous, to say nothing worse. God created these mysteries, and we must understand that.

Every one of us who has come into this world has a mission. We have been given such resources that, if we cultivate them within the circumstances in which we have been placed, we shall pass safely through this world. When I say “well,” I mean safely. I do not mean living well through feasting, because many people eat richly and end up being carried to the emergency room; some even die from their excesses. Nor do I mean, “I shall have an easy life, remain idle, and let others work for me.” No. I mean that I shall pass safely through life. I shall not gamble my soul and my eternity on black or red. That is what it means to pass well through this world. The one who passes well through it is the one who passes through quietly, without drawing attention to himself.

As for the person who creates a great commotion around himself, I do not know whether he will reach the end safely, nor where he will find himself when the curtain falls—when he dies, whether young or old. Everything, then, comes from God. He gives to people in proportion to their abilities. Naturally, we would like to be someone with many talents, but that is not what matters. First of all, God has given two fundamental talents to every human being. When we speak of five, two, and one, we mean differing degrees, not a literal number of talents. Even the person said to have one talent already possesses at least two. I am alive: life is a talent given to me by God. And I have the power to multiply life, to bring other human beings into the world. Those are two talents.

I also have the power to increase life—something no artificial means can do unless life is already present. Thus, when the parable says that He gave five, two, and one, it means that He gave talents in differing degrees, not literally only five, only two, or only one. We therefore bear a responsibility before Him. A person should not seek many talents, but as few as possible, so that, I repeat, he may pass through this world more quietly. But we are proud, and this pride does not allow us to pass humbly through the place where God has appointed us. I often hold up my hand to illustrate this diversity.

Look at the little finger, then the next, and the next, and the next, and the thumb. They are unequal, but when they come together, they form a fist. Imagine if all your toes were the same length. Would you be able to walk? Wisdom has fashioned everything and given it to the human person. All that is required is for the person to labor humbly where he has been placed. Today we see a society that is falling apart. People who were never made even to wash dishes, and who cannot wash their own plate or handkerchief, are governing the world. That is precisely why we have this modern jungle, where no one knows what the person next to him is doing at his expense.

Christ was a carpenter. His hands must surely have had calluses from the plane and from working the wood beside Saint Joseph, who was thought to be His father. The Apostle Paul made tents, though he held all the wisdom of the world in his hand. Paul was a prodigy of learning. When he came here and spoke to our forefathers, he spoke to them from their own poets and philosophers, and demonstrated the truth of Christ to them. Read the seventeenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles and see the dialogue and the sermon he delivered here in Athens, at the Pnyx. Through what Paul brought here, we today possess Christianity and Orthodoxy.

Look at what he told them. Paul knew everything; he was a prodigy of learning. Yet he was not a dignitary, government official, great politician, or diplomat. He made tents. Of course, if Paul were seeking to marry today, a modern young woman would never wish to lean upon the arm of a tentmaker—and yet this was Paul. But we fail to grasp these things. We often excuse ourselves by saying that we have not studied, that we possess nothing, and that such works are for other people. Do what belongs to your own mission, and leave the rest for others to do. Yet we do not even fulfill our own mission. Instead, we move away from the place where Christ has put us.

We try to work somewhere else in order to display ourselves and, in our own way, to please God. I was speaking with a woman who was a physician and microbiologist; her husband was an internist and cardiologist. They had no children. During our conversation, she turned to the subject of good works. “God desires good works,” she said. “God will not ask good works of you,” I replied. She truly did help the poor: whenever she recognized poverty, she took no payment, and she gave a great deal in alms. Nevertheless, I told her, “My dear lady, God will not ask that of you.”

“God will not ask almsgiving of you.” “Then what will He ask?” she said. “He will ask you for children. From you, He will ask for children. You will show mercy to your own child, and through your child you will show mercy to your fellow human beings. You will educate that child in the faith and in true humanity, so that the child may serve the world. You may raise an inventor, a scientist, a theologian, or a priest—I do not know what the child may become. You have confused things; be careful. God does not bargain. For example, He gave you the talent of motherhood—let us not go further into that now—but you are not using it. You say, ‘God, I shall perform other works and then come to You.’ You will not be able to enter. ‘This is the road I have shown you.’”

This is the path I have given you. Nothing else. Leave microbiology aside. I did not create this earth without purpose. The commandment is: “Be fruitful and multiply,” lawfully and morally, “and have dominion over the earth.” So this is your appointed place. You are a woman; your place is in the home—first as a mother, and then everything else. The greatest mission, the greatest talent, the most precious golden talent, is motherhood; and for a father, it is fatherhood. For whatever else he may make is lifeless. He may make machines, color televisions, apartment buildings, savings, and investments; they are all lifeless. They reach only as far as the grave. But if he has children, they are...

alive; they pass beyond the grave. And if they turn out well—if he takes care of them and does not seek only to educate them according to the world, but also raises them according to God; if he does not see them merely as playthings or objects, but as eternal beings—then that is something of true worth. But, as you know, all this has been pushed aside by modern theories and handed over to others. Women become pregnant here and kill their children, and then they look for ways to produce children in tubes. God created woman, and they have replaced the woman with tubes. They take the man’s seed and try to make a woman’s womb by artificial means, so that we may now manufacture human beings industrially—all so that a woman’s charms and figure will not be spoiled, and she may use them for fornication and adultery. For in most cases, that is the purpose.

Do you know how many beauty institutes—workshops for sculpting women’s flesh—there are in Athens? More than six hundred. And what do they do? They sculpt bodies. Why? For what purpose? For the reason I mentioned earlier.

If we truly paid close attention, word for word, to what He has said, and remembered that one day we shall give an account to Him for what He commanded us, we would be unable to sleep. For we have abandoned the place in which He set us. You can see this in life, perhaps even in your own home. Perhaps you yourselves are what I am about to describe. This diversity is necessary; it is a blessing. Today we are trying to make everyone equal. We are equal in the worth of our souls, but not in our particular existence, our abilities, or our knowledge. For if we all became the same, how would any of us live? We would all die. Suppose we all became scholars and professionals.

Now suppose the doctor tells you that you must eat rusks and nothing else. Where will you find them? Who will dig the soil? Who will sow? Who will reap? Who will thresh? Who will grind the grain? Who will knead the dough? Who? How can we all become professionals and then expect servants to do everything for us? Where will we find them? You fall ill and go to the hospital—you are human, after all. What will happen? Where will the nurse come from?

Someone must come and empty your bedpan while you are lying near death. Who do you think you are? Will you simply give orders? Will you bring your children to care for you? You cast your children aside, saying that children were unnecessary and cost money—and now you are left in your own filth. You can see what happens today. I say this plainly: if you have no one of your own, do not go to the hospital; you may die there. And what then? The employee will still collect his wages.

You too must do your part. You are human as well: place your service at the service of another, and let him place his strength at your service, because we need one another. Have you never read how Paul uses the body as an example? Can the eye say, “I have no need of the feet; I am an eye”? But if your eye is hurting and your feet do not carry you to the doctor, what then? The eye cannot say that. Can the ear say, “I have no need of the eye”? Can the hand say, “I have no need of the body”? Can they say such things? The hand, the ear, the eye, the foot—all of them together make up the human being. Consider another example: in our homes we have many different vessels.

We have silver vessels and the like, but we also have certain less honorable vessels, and these are often the first ones we need. In a family, if you have no bedpan for your little child, your mother, or yourself when you fall ill tomorrow, you are lost. These less honorable vessels are more useful than all the golden ornaments you display in your sitting room or elsewhere. Is that not so? Of course it is, though we take no notice. And so someone says contemptuously, “Ah, that country bumpkin!” Yet that countryman will send you the cheese. He will send you the fresh butter you need to eat when the doctor has forbidden you everything else. He will grow the tomato and the cucumber; he will tend the cow.

And you will demand your choice steak, to eat it with your girlfriend and carry on however you please. Yet it came from that countryman. But where is our understanding? Man does not know what he is asking for. He has lost touch with reality. He does not know what he seeks. The One who gave these gifts knows what He has given and how He has distributed them. We see a little child, for example, and...

he lines the others up and commands them, “Left, right! Left, right!” He organizes everyone—a little shepherd boy. He has leadership abilities within him; he will lead somewhere. But they send him off to become a lawyer who manufactures lies. They make him an obstetrician who kills children. Let him take the lead where his gift belongs. Let him enter the military or go wherever his abilities fit. Let him become a foreman and build something. Then you see another child who is not like that; he takes an empty milk tin, puts a few coals inside, and...

chants his “Lord have mercy.” Let that child become a priest; God has given him illumination, so let him be. You see another girl who is always sewing and making things; let her become a seamstress. Do not force her to become a ballerina. Let her become a seamstress, and she will succeed. You see another with the little children; she will become a mother. Do not step in as her mother-in-law and whisper behind her, “We were fools and had children—what are you going to do?” One day you will find her utterly alone and clinging around your neck. Leave people as God created them, according to the talents and inclinations He has given each one. But the godmother interferes, the cousin interferes, the aunt interferes, and so on. Their child may not have the natural gifts needed to advance, but because they have connections, they keep asking where they can place him and how they can push him forward. Yet this young man is meant to be a carpenter...

or a mechanic. Let him repair cars. He is not suited to cutting into people’s heads or operating on some wealthy family’s child. Must he become that? No; let him become a true human being. Then he may even direct others. This is why we have the wretched state of affairs we see today: we have ignored the fact that God has given something to each person, and each must stand where God has placed him. We do not take this into account, and so we have what we might call this terrible disorder. It is difficult to find people in their proper place, because we believe that the position makes the person. No—the person gives worth to the position. Many times you have gone to some public office to do something or ask for something, and there you found a conscientious person, a person with honor...

who considered the other person’s labor and sweat. He took the trouble to help you, and within two minutes your matter was settled. Then you say, “Glory to God, we found a true human being.” And what should you say after that? “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed.” He did not learn these things at a school desk; schools teach other things. He learned them at home. His mother taught him how to feel another’s pain, how to value others, and how to see the human person. When he went out through the door, it was not a beast that emerged, but a human being who served other human beings. Thus God is glorified, and so, by extension, is that mother. We are concerned with producing educated people, but not people filled with grace. Education, you know, accomplishes nothing if it is not accompanied by the grace of God and love for humanity. It is a double-edged sword.

As I said in another talk, every day we see what education can do when it is used in crime. At Achladokampos, a man with two degrees stabbed his girlfriend—who also had two degrees—twenty-seven times and threw her away as though she were some worthless goat. Another man, a professor, threw his girlfriend, a student, out of a window. What good do letters and learning do by themselves? There must be a true human being within; Christ must dwell within the person for this transformation to take place, so that he may live as a human being among humanity. Today we have little beasts living among humanity. So, as I was saying, the Master gave to each according to his own ability and then went away. Now those who received the corresponding capital, the corresponding talents, were to put them to work. “Then he who had received the five talents went...”

“and traded with them, and made another five talents.” Work with them—work on the basis of the five talents you received. Whether you were given five abilities, or two, or three, or eight, or ten, I want you to work with those abilities and with the strength you were given. Do not abandon your appointed place, as I said earlier, in order to work somewhere else.

He gained one hundred percent. Likewise, the one who had received two talents—the man with fewer abilities—also gained another two. “But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his lord’s money.” The other servant hid it in the ground. He did not multiply it; he did not put it to work. For when capital is put to work, I, as the owner or employer, gain and remain in business, but many other people living around me benefit as well. These things have a purpose. They were not given randomly. The talents were not given to me so that I might waste them in the coffeehouse.

He did not give me the talents to waste them in cabarets, nor did He give them to me so that I might travel about and spend them on cruises. He gave them to be put to work, so that benefit might result. The other servant, He says, did not work; he buried his talent in the ground. This is the person who sees nothing beyond his flesh, himself, his pleasures, and his feasting. Animals do the same. Animals were made to look downward, toward their bellies; man was made to look upward. With man, things are different. Yet there are many people who see nothing beyond their flesh, their self-interest, their ego, their lawlessness, their wrongdoing, and their stomach. They say, “I know how to arrange these things.” Perhaps it is some scheme or fraud involving their father or their work. They see nothing beyond themselves. This is the kind of person...

who buried the talent in the ground. The purpose of these talents is not for them to be buried; they are meant for the benefit of everyone. You too should have turned your one talent into two. The servant who turned five into ten and the one who turned two into four did nothing different from one another: each increased by one hundred percent the capital God had given him. If the third servant had turned his one into two, he too would have produced a one-hundred-percent return. If you give me one drachma and I return two, have I not increased it by one hundred percent? Have I not doubled it? In any case: “After a long time, the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.” At this point, the parable...

resembles the Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents, where an account was also demanded and the servants were summoned to settle it. They brought the man forward. We too shall be taken to give an account. He was brought forward as though a policeman were escorting him: “Come and give an account.” “And he who had received the five talents came forward and brought five other talents.” The Master had placed five in one of his hands, and he brought another five in the other. Many people not only fail to bring any profit; they do not even present what they originally received. They imagine it belongs to them and that they may use it and dispose of it however they please.

So he brought another five talents in his other hand and said, “Lord, you delivered to me five talents; behold, I have gained five more talents besides them.” I gained them on the basis of what You gave me, not through some other abilities or inventions of my own. They were not mine; they were what You gave me. Upon these, therefore, I gained another five talents. His lord answered him: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

Since you proved faithful and labored to multiply what I gave you, you are worthy to be entrusted with greater things as well. “Enter into the joy of your lord.” Few are the people who have been granted some foretaste of what lies beyond the grave.

The Apostle, who saw what lies beyond the grave, wrote and said this: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man” what God has prepared for those who love Him. The human nous—the spiritual intellect—cannot comprehend it; neither human speech, nor eye, nor ear can bring it all together and tell us what awaits beyond the grave, when the human person leaves this shell behind and takes flight. Yet, as you know, we cannot even bear to speak of leaving this shell, this old cage, because the human body is a cage...

The human person has grown accustomed to the body and does not want to leave that cage. And whenever death is mentioned, you know what people say: “Knock on wood! Away with you! What are you saying?” and so on. Yet death is a reality—sorrowful for some and joyful for others. What do we do? By the life we live here, we make death either dark or radiant. It is rather absurd for a person to refuse to die. Those who fear judgment are the ones who do not want to die, because after death there is judgment: an account must be given, and we are answerable. Because we have not put our accounts in order, we do not want that examination which comes immediately after death.

The universal judgment comes later, but when we die we undergo a particular judgment. According to our faith and our works, we are assigned our place as we await the universal judgment. We may know that we have failed, though not by how much we have lost our case; and if we have succeeded, we may know that too, though not what grade we shall receive—excellent, very good, good, almost good; I do not know. In any event, the first two servants lived in this spirit: they put to work whatever they had been given, remained in the place where God had set them, and heard the same words. For the other servant also heard exactly the same words. The passage continues: “And the one who had received the two talents also came forward and said, ‘Lord, you delivered two talents to me...’”

“‘See, I have gained two more talents with them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful over a few things; I will set you over many. Enter into the joy of your lord.’” Let us move on.

He heard exactly the same words of praise as the servant with the five talents. The same praise was given whether the servant had five talents or two. The third servant conducted himself in the exact opposite way, and he heard the exact opposite, as the passage goes on to tell us. All of us have a talent; God has given each of us something. As I said at the beginning, it may be the multiplication of life, motherhood, compassion for our fellow human beings, consolation, or prayer.

There are people whose words can pierce even the hardest stone and accomplish something good. Yet they do not use that gift in this way; they use it for the opposite purpose—for sin, for breaking up families, and for tearing society apart.

Everyone has something and can do something. One person can use a drachma to give alms or bring someone a little joy, to fill a hungry stomach, put shoes on someone’s feet, care for an orphan, hurry to the hospital to visit a sick person who has received no visitor for many months, or go to a prison. Every person has something to offer; no one is barren. Everyone can do something.

I remember that here in Klafthmonos Square there was a disabled shoeshiner. A disabled shoeshiner, completely illiterate—what would people have called him?

Yet anyone who sat down there to have his shoes shined would hear a sermon as well. If the man did not have a New Testament, the shoeshiner would give him one, because he would ask him about it as they spoke. Or he would give him a leaflet or a religious book. In other words, you might give him two drachmas, for example, to shine your shoes...

...and he would give you something worth five—seven, ten, or twelve drachmas; I do not remember what a New Testament cost in those days. I used to pass by him, and I knew what he was doing, just as he knew what I was doing. He would say to me, “You have your pulpit there. That is where God placed you. I have my pulpit here, on my shoeshine box. From here I carry out my ministry.” One man came to him and said, “I am old now; I am going to die.” The shoeshiner replied, “No, that is not how matters stand. Whether or not you repent and go to Holy Confession, will you not still die?”

“I do not see you as old,” he told him. “I see you as strong.” In Greek, he explained, “I move the accent in the word ‘old’ and make you ‘strong.’ Now go to Holy Confession, and then come back again.” The man was so deeply moved that he did indeed go to Holy Confession. And he was saved through that little sermon, through the two brief words spoken to him by that shoeshiner down there. Everyone can say something. Go out to the hospitals; go to the cemetery here nearby. You will see atheism, abandonment, and ignorance concerning the most basic matters—things about which we know much and can speak. You see someone washing a grave and spending day and night over it, wearing himself out, though the person buried there may have been a beast: unrepentant, without Holy Confession, and without Holy Communion. Yet when he died, everyone made a great show of mourning over him.

These poor people do not understand. I think the man died at fifty-eight after being insured through IKA. Someone should go and stand beside the mourner, speak to him, and help him understand what is truly needed. It is good and beautiful that relics lie here which will one day be taken up, when we shall be restored as whole human beings. Honoring a grave is beautiful; I have no objection to that. But that is not the heart of the matter. You spend two hundred, three hundred, or five hundred drachmas a day here, while a living person needs this or that and could be helped with it. Show mercy: you have a talent. And we Christians have a talent because God has granted us to learn and understand a few things. If we keep this talent for ourselves or do not use it at all, then I shall be like the man who buried his talent. No one has nothing. One person can pray, another can speak, another can give counsel. Everyone has a talent, and we must put it to work and cultivate it. Let no one say that he can do nothing or cannot benefit anyone.

Are there really people in this world who cannot benefit anyone? Do not judge by who is great or small; everyone is needed. And pay no attention to those empty-headed people who think themselves important and have no faith in the little ones. You have surely read Aesop’s fable of the lion and the mouse. Once a lion was digging near the root of a tree, where a poor little mouse had its nest. The lion drove it out and was about to crush it beneath his paw. But the little mouse said, “My king, please do not destroy me.” The lion asked, “What use are you?” The mouse replied, “How do you know? If God so arranges it, perhaps one day even you may need something from me.” So the lion kicked it aside but did not harm, eat, or kill it. Then, one day...

The lion was captured. A trap had been set there; the lion stepped on it, fell in, and was caught. They tied him to a tree, and he roared. The little mouse came along and said, “Well, my friend, are you tied up there now? I will help you.” The lion replied, “You are going to help me?” “Just watch what I shall do.” The mouse went over and gnawed through the rope, strand by strand, and the lion was freed and ran away.

Of course, it is regarded as a silly fable. Yet it expresses a reality—a true reality. No one in this world is insignificant; nothing is. Even these flies...

Even these flies that we kill and do not want, and the bedbugs, the lice, and the fleas—did cancer exist when there were lice, when there were fleas, when those creatures were common? Did it?

When bedbugs were common, was there cancer? There was not. Someone says, “The bedbug stinks.” The bedbug might answer, “I have drunk your own blood, your filthy blood. I am not to blame; your blood stinks, and that is why I stink.” It feeds on impure blood, just as a leech draws impure blood from a person. How could we ever fathom such things? I mention them only by way of illustration, but I apply the lesson to human beings. See everyone as useful, and see yourself as useful too. Ask: “What can I do today, my Christ? I am not insignificant; I too am not nothing—I am something. What have You given me? Where can I stand and offer something, so that Your name may be glorified and my fellow human beings may be benefited?” When a person thinks in this way and offers himself with this disposition...

God will move other, entirely unexpected people—persons and names he would never have imagined—to help him. In this way we complement one another and make our way through this world, which we must necessarily pass through, since we have come into it. In any event, listen now to what happened to the third servant.

Then, it says, the other servant, the one who had received the single talent, said: “Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter seed.” He accuses his master. “I know,” he says, “that you are harsh and that you demand an account so that you can supposedly take something for yourself.” But what could God take from us? “You did not labor there; I was the one who would sweat and suffer, where you had not scattered seed. And because I was afraid”—afraid that you would demand an account from me and so on—“I went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.” In other words, “Take it and leave me alone.”

So the master takes him at his own word. “His master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered?’” Is that how you accuse me? Then, for that very reason, you should have acted accordingly. How else should you deal with someone so harsh and greedy, and so on? If God wants us to exert ourselves a little and do a little work, it is for our own good. God is neither diminished nor increased by it. Does the sun benefit from us, or do we benefit from the sun? We need the sun; the sun does not need us. Therefore, if what you say is true, “you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers.”

Then, when I came, I would have received it back with interest. If you knew—if you truly believed—that God is unjust and evil, then, he says, you should have “deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received what was mine with interest”—both the principal and the interest. There is a class of people who have talents, indeed talents that are very powerful and useful to humanity, yet they do nothing with them. Suppose, for example, I have a skill, a patent, or an invention, but I cannot develop it myself. Why do I not entrust it to someone else, so that the world may benefit from it?

And I too could receive something from it. Many people have taken to the grave things they knew: medicines, inventions, and many other things. They died and took them with them.

God gave a certain illumination to that person’s mind, something unique. He did not give it merely for that person to become rich. He gave it for the benefit of everyone. So entrust it to the bank there—to the bankers in the other world—so that, in this sense, it may be multiplied and serve some purpose. And yet many people, as you know, protect their inventions with patents, so that no one else can encroach upon their rights. Very well, it is the fruit of your own labor, certainly, and so on. But there are others who have a medicine, for example, and will not disclose it...

They will not disclose it to a physician. Someone may know something more and may have discovered a combination of medicines for a particular illness, but then he dies and takes the formula with him. Here in Pangrati there were two pharmacists. One had a remedy for ulcers, and the other had one for another serious illness that I cannot now remember. Both of them died and took with them the talents they possessed.

They could have left them behind, but they did not leave them even to their children, so that others might have them. And there are many, many more like them. A great many people are this way. I mention this as a parallel and set it before you to show that there is another possibility: if I cannot develop and multiply something myself, why should I not entrust it to someone else, and then perhaps to another as well, even if in the process it becomes diluted...

After all, it was God who gave me this talent. There are many talents that make life easier for people. Why do you hide yours away for yourself? Why do you keep it only for your own advantage? Even if we accept that you need it in order to make a living, when you see that you are about to depart this life, why do you not entrust it to someone? Why do you not leave it to someone in your will, so that others may learn it? Why do you bury it? When people live in this way—indifferent to everyone around them, seeing nothing beyond themselves and their own little home, even putting glass on top so no one can climb in, sitting inside with a machine gun and looking down upon everyone else—then they will suffer what this servant suffered. A human being was placed in this world for the sake of the rest of the world. We live through one another: the one with five talents, the one with two, and the one with one—all together. The one with five is needed, the one with two is needed, and the one with one is needed, so that together they may create the harmony blessed by God.

So that a person may live as a true human being here in society. And this is what became of that servant.

Then the master said: “Take the talent from him, and give it to the one who has ten talents. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” When a person passes into eternity, he will pass over richer, better, and with a greater inner capacity. But if he descends into Hades, he will be stripped of all the good things God had given him; they will be taken away. He will stand naked and completely exposed. “Take these things,” God says, “and give them to those who also multiplied the other gifts.” For the one who has...

The one who made use of what he had and multiplied it deserves to receive even more. But as for the one who showed no concern at all, take away even what I had given him. Leave him naked; leave him so. Do you understand, then, what that person’s fate will be? “And cast this unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” If you remember, we heard a similar sentence in another talk of ours, in the parable of the royal distribution of talents—no, in the parable of the royal wedding—when the king found the man who had no wedding garment and said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here?” That is one instance. In another, we hear: “So also will My heavenly Father do to you, if you do not forgive men their trespasses from your hearts.”

That passage concerned freedom from resentment. Here we hear almost the same words. What strikes me—and should strike you as well—is that Christ persists in telling a whole series of parables, yet always arrives at the same conclusion, with the same severe consequences. Through this persistence and repetition, He seeks to impress upon the human nous, the spiritual intellect, that something serious is taking place. This is a serious matter, and we must pay attention to it. Examine yourselves, then. You will see that God has given you many gifts and has ordered many things providentially for your sake, and perhaps until today you have not used them as you should. In Mesolongiou Square, here in Pangrati...

One day, as I was leaving the post office there, I met an elderly military officer. He was receiving a pension of forty-seven or forty-eight thousand drachmas, or thereabouts, and at that time he must also have been receiving another fifty or sixty thousand from rents. This happened six or seven years ago. I spoke to him there in the street.

“Your two children have become thieves, and so on. God granted that you should survive, retire from the service, and all the rest; and now you walk around with your cane and your gold-and-amber worry beads, looking at the nannies who bring the children here. Are you not ashamed? Is this what you are—a general? Is this who you are? Tell me. Come to your senses. Have mercy on yourself, and then show mercy to others. For if you do not have mercy on yourself, what then? God gave you talents; He gave you an education and a position of authority. You pick up the telephone and shake the whole world, arranging transfers to take revenge, instead of arranging transfers to meet people’s needs. Pay attention to this.” We wrestled over it for an hour and a half, perhaps two hours. What came of it, I do not know. There are many people to whom God has given countless talents.

God still bears with them, giving them time to show love to their fellow human beings, so that God may be glorified and they themselves may be saved, yet they pay no attention. So you too must take heed: see where you have failed, where God placed you to bear fruit, and where you yourselves have moved your own ring in order to fight. For God is good: He forgives here, if there is metanoia—repentance—but He does not forgive there, if there is no repentance. Even if we were to remain here until evening, there would still be more to say. May God help us.

Να σου πει τώρα ο γιατρός ότι πρέπει να φας παξιμάδι, τίποτα άλλο. Πού θα το βρεις το παξιμάδι; Ποιος θα πάει να σκάψει; Ποιος θα πάει να σπείρει; Ποιος θα θερίσει; Ποιος θα αλωνίσει; Ποιος θα αλέσει; Ποιος θα ζυμώσει; Ποιος; Πώς θα γίνουμε όλοι και θα ζητάμε δούλους; Πώς θα το βρούμε; Ποιος; Αρρώστησες και πας στο νοσοκομείο. Άνθρωπος είσαι. Τι θα γίνει; Πού θα βρεθεί η νοσοκόμα;

Θυμούμαι, εδώ στην πλατεία Κλαυθμώνος υπήρχε ένας ανάπηρος στιλβωτής. Ανάπηρος στιλβωτής, αγράμματος τελείως, πώς θα τον λέγανε;

Αυτές οι μύγες που σκοτώνουμε εμείς και δεν τις θέλουμε, και αυτές, και αυτοί οι κοριοί, και αυτές οι ψείρες, και αυτοί οι ψύλλοι. Υπήρχε καρκίνος όταν υπήρχαν ψείρες, όταν υπήρχαν ψύλλοι, όταν υπήρχαν; Υπήρχε;

Ώστε, όταν θα έρθω, να πάρω τον τόκο. Αν ήξερες εσύ, εγνώριζες εσύ, ότι ο Θεός είναι άδικος, ότι ο Θεός είναι κακός, τότε, του λέει, έπρεπε «βαλείν το αργύριόν μου τοις τραπεζίταις και ελθών εγώ εκομισάμην αν το εμόν συν τόκω», να πάρω και το κεφάλαιο, να πάρω και τον τόκο. Είναι μια κατηγορία ανθρώπων οι οποίοι έχουν τάλαντα, και τάλαντα μάλιστα πολύ δυνατά και χρήσιμα στον άνθρωπο, και δεν τα εργάζονται. Φέρ’ ειπείν, εγώ μια τέχνη, φέρ’ ειπείν, εγώ μια πατέντα, έχω μια εφεύρεση, δεν μπορώ να την εργαστώ. Γιατί δεν την εμπιστεύομαι στον άλλον, να ωφεληθεί ο κόσμος;
