Summary

Daniel and the Three Holy Youths show why children must be spiritually equipped before they face hardship, separation, or an environment hostile to their faith. Their courage is attributed largely to the religious formation and example they received at home, especially from faithful mothers who prepared their children to withstand temptation. God revealed the mystery to Daniel, who credited divine wisdom rather than human ability and responded with thanksgiving, praise, and mercy toward others.

I thought I would take today’s subject from the saints commemorated today. I do not know whether you are aware that today our Church celebrated Saint Dionysios, the Three Holy Youths, and the Prophet Daniel. Each of these figures, of course, offers his own moral teaching. I wanted to dwell on these youths, on these children, and especially on Daniel, because I believe their lives give us an opportunity for reflection.

We too must think about our own children and how we should equip them, so that when they find themselves in difficult circumstances, they will have the spiritual resources to meet the challenge, because we cannot always be beside them.

At some point they will leave us, or we will depart and they will be left on their own. This is a responsibility for which every parent—and everyone who is able to play a part in equipping a child—will be called to account. In the life of the Prophet Daniel

there are many beautiful things

that teach both adults and children. This holy prophet accomplished his great deeds while living in exile and captivity. It appears that he too was taken captive during the seventy years when the Jews were held in Babylon. Although they were captives and lived in bondage, they did not forget the faith of their fathers or their religion. We, unfortunately, are ready to abandon everything if we find ourselves in such difficult circumstances, excusing ourselves by saying, “Let us get through this for now; let us survive, and then we shall see. If we ever return to our homeland, we shall find the Church again and find God again.” Other figures in the Old Testament also remind us that God is not present only in our homeland. God is everywhere, and wherever a person may be, he must be attentive, remember God, and call upon Him. God has the power to help him work wonders right where he is. You remember a parallel figure, Joseph the All-Comely. When he was taken captive and sold by his brothers, and his mistress made advances toward him, what did he say? He did not give in and say, “Let me enjoy myself now, and when I return to my homeland...” No. That is no acceptable excuse.

Instead, he said, “How can I commit this sin before my God?” He had been sold into Egypt. Was God in Egypt? Yes—Joseph knew that God saw him. Christians see God. Just as God sees Christians, so Christians see God. Even when no one sees or hears us, we remain conscious that God sees us. If a person kept this in mind at every moment, there are many things he would never do. Let no one see him or hear him; let no one find out, and let nothing become public. There is still Someone else who sees everything, records everything, weighs everything, and calls everything to account. When a person possesses this fear of God, he will walk rightly through life wherever he may find himself. In the older churches, on the iconostasis, directly above the Holy Doors,

among the other things depicted, the iconographer would always portray a hand, an ear, and an eye. The faithful person would see them and ask, “Whose eye is that?” It is the eye of God, which sees everything. “What is that ear?” It is the ear of God, which hears everything. “And what is that pencil?” It is God’s pencil, which records everything. If a person were attentive to this, the outcome would be different in every situation and in every age. Why do some people imagine that there are good times and bad times? No; it is we who make the times good or bad. In every circumstance, a person can preserve his faith in God and his purity. Let me open the Book of Daniel and explain it to you as simply as I can.

I turn to the first chapter and read about the time when they were captives. First, I would like you to know that the king had given an order: certain children were to be chosen from among the Hebrews and set apart. They were not to eat from the common pots of captivity, but from the royal dishes and the king’s own table, so that they would be strong in every way. It was thought that by eating and drinking well they would become intelligent and could later be used to govern the other captives. So the king commanded that certain promising children be selected. We are not told how many were chosen. In any case,

among the group selected were four children: Daniel and three of his friends. As Holy Scripture tells us, they were renamed; instead of keeping their Hebrew names, they were given other names. Among them, it says, were four men of Judah: one named Daniel, another Hananiah, another Mishael, and another Azariah. They were four children, four companions, and the chief eunuch gave them new names. He called Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, Mishael Meshach, and Azariah Abednego. You may remember these names from Holy Saturday, when

the prophecies are read and this episode from Daniel is also recounted. There you can hear the names again. But Daniel resolved in his heart not to defile himself with the king’s food and not to eat from that table. He resolved it in his heart. If we fail to accomplish certain things, especially spiritual things, it is because we have not set our hearts firmly upon them. We merely discuss them and say, “It cannot be done; it is impossible.” When a person firmly resolves to do something, he will succeed. Look at people who fall in love: some rightly, wishing to marry a young woman or a young man, and others for adultery and other sins. You see the latter persist with a satanic determination. Why do you persist in evil?

The devil plants something in your soul and you act upon it. Why not plant what is good—or let God plant it in your soul—and act upon that? Daniel, it says, resolved in his heart not to eat the king’s food or drink the wine that the king drank. He therefore asked the chief eunuch to allow him not to defile himself. He went to the man in charge and asked, “Could we refrain from eating this?” Some people say, “Is that possible? No, it is impossible,” and use as their excuse the fact that their husband or wife does not agree. “I cannot do otherwise. I have to eat, so as not to cause trouble in the house,” and so they break the fast. It is not so. When you set your nous—the spiritual mind—on fasting and truly have a living relationship with God, God has a screwdriver with which He can turn the other person’s mind around.

Then you are able to practice self-restraint, keep your fast, and do what is right. God has the power. And God caused Daniel to find grace and mercy before the chief eunuch. But you often behave differently. You say, “Your wife berates you, but when she decides she wants some fasting food for a fasting season, that is how it must be.” Yet if you kneel before her, so to speak, she will tell you, “I do not know what you are going to eat, but you will make this for me.” Right away she has managed to make you do what she wants. How much more quickly will she throw the fasting food out altogether! But have you resolved within yourself to ask God to help you find grace before this person? Perhaps that person is not acting from malice or unbelief, but simply from ignorance. Perhaps fasting was never observed in their home.

Perhaps no one ever spoke to them about it. Perhaps they never heard a sermon about fasting. They may even have seen a sick priest eating and said, “Look, the priests eat, so why should I fast?”—and other such things. What are you to do with such a person? Pull out a gun and kill him? You will wait patiently. You will entreat God: “My God, You know.” You get up and continue. God has the power, as I said, to turn the screwdriver, and you may see this person—who opposed you and made you think you could never accomplish anything—begin to observe the fast himself. That is what Daniel did. He turned to God. God looked down and saw that this Hebrew child wished to preserve his faith and his fast, even there in exile. Then the chief eunuch offered the usual human excuses and said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who appointed your food and your drink.

Why should he see your faces looking more dejected than those of the young men your own age, and thus make me answerable to the king with my own head?” If he saw them looking weak, pale, yellow, and so forth, he might think that the eunuch was stealing their rations. “How can I do such a thing?” he asked. But Daniel persisted; he had resolved to succeed. Daniel then said to Melzar—that was the man’s name—“Test your servants for ten days. Let us be given legumes to eat and water to drink.” Not hamburgers, not whipped eggs, and so forth. No—legumes and water. They did not need the king’s drinks. “Then, after ten days, examine our faces yourself. Let us come before you, and you will see how we are doing.

Compare us with the young men who eat the king’s food, and then deal with your servants according to what you see. If you see that we are not doing well, then we will eat that food. But if you see that we are standing strong and are fit to appear before the king, then let us follow what our own faith teaches and not eat from your tables.” So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days. At the end of the ten days, their faces appeared fairer and their bodies healthier than those of all the young men who ate the king’s food. I say this for the sake of certain mothers who are afraid to have their children fast, thinking that they will make them sick or weak. They keep a scale nearby and watch every gram their children gain or lose.

Yet that is not how things are. When you apply the law of God with discernment, you have His blessing. God will guard your child and preserve him for as long as He wills. God gave us a child after seventeen years without children, and when that child observed the whole fast of Great Lent, he would gain four or five kilos, even without oil; he ate oil only on Saturdays and Sundays. At six or seven years old, and in the years that followed, he would gain four or five kilos. Christians have never tested the power of their faith, so as to discover who God is and what He can accomplish. That is precisely why all the beautiful customs of our holy Church and our faith have been cast out of our homes.

There is no blessing. And now we try to replace spiritual things with material things, where no such replacement is possible. So these four appeared healthier and fairer in body than all the other young men. And what did Melzar do? He removed their food from among the other portions. There were fifty children and fifty servings, but he set four servings aside and brought legumes to these four. Melzar took away the food and wine they were supposed to receive and gave them legumes instead. And to these four young men God gave knowledge, understanding in every kind of learning, and wisdom. We think that when a child has to study, he must eat great heavy lumps of food,

especially when a mountain of examinations lies ahead, but then nothing comes out of his head. Let him refrain from eating; let him fast, and God will make him wise. Where he might otherwise study for ten hours and retain nothing, he will study for two or three and recite it all from memory. That is because God intervenes. Unfortunately, we take no account of God. We do not reckon God as a factor in anything. We have reduced everything to our own knowledge, our education, our science, and our skill. But here, it says, God gave knowledge and understanding. Knowledge and understanding do not fall from the roof tiles, nor do they simply come from libraries. They are grace from the Holy Spirit. To the degree that the Holy Spirit finds a person clean, pure, and prepared as a place upon which to rest His feet, that person will receive wisdom, together with

every kind of learning and wisdom. God also gave them discernment, so that they understood things they had not yet been taught. And He made Daniel wise in every vision and dream. God gave Daniel a special gift that would serve him later in other matters: he could interpret dreams and explain the meaning of every vision. At the appointed time, after some days had passed, the king commanded that they be brought in. “Bring these Hebrew children here, and let us see what progress they have made.” The chief eunuch brought them before Nebuchadnezzar. The king spoke with them and began asking them questions. He wanted to see how they were doing now that they had been well fed, were no longer treated merely as captives, and felt differently. And among all of them no one was found equal to Daniel,

Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. They excelled in every question put to them; they were the very best. No one equal to them was found. All the others were pampered children, nourished on rich food from the royal tables and supposedly made intelligent by it. Yet in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found these four ten times better than all the magicians, enchanters, and other wise men he had there. They spoke more wisely and gave more accurate answers. And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus. He stayed among them until King Cyrus came, whom you may still remember from school. So here we have a lesson

So here is a lesson that does not belong entirely to Daniel, or to Hananiah, or to Azariah, or to Abednego. It belongs to their mothers. The greater part of the credit belongs to their mothers and to their homes. That is where they were nurtured, where they received the proper spiritual protection, and where they were given an example to follow. From home they drew the sound foundations of their faith, so that their faith could not be extinguished amid the turmoil of Persia and all that idolatry. Much of the credit belongs there. For if we examine both the great religious figures and the great secular figures who have passed through this world, we shall find mothers standing behind them. Mothers are the ones

who stood beside them, not the father. The father is often like a guest in the house. He is the last to learn anything—if he learns it at all. It is the mother who knows everything about both her son and her daughter, or at least she ought to. Unless, of course, she is occupied with concerns of her own outside the home; that is another matter, and I am not speaking about that. I am speaking about those mothers who, in a certain sense, wish to take pride in their children.

If we have John Chrysostom and marvel at him, it is because his mother was widowed at eighteen, remained faithful to her calling, and raised a Chrysostom. If we have Basil and a family with seven Saints, it is because we had Emmelia. If we have Gregory the Theologian, it is because we had Nonna. If we have Augustine, it is because we had Monica, and so on. You will see the same thing with great men: their mothers stood beside them.

If they are asked and answer honestly, they will have more to say about their mothers than about anyone else. So these young men, who left home and found themselves alone there in Babylonia, had been equipped by their homes. What spiritual resources will your child have when he leaves tomorrow to study abroad? If here in Greece, in the midst of Christendom, you load him up with sandwiches during Holy Week and on the great holy days of Christendom, what resources will he have when he goes farther away? Where will he take his stand? Will he draw someone else toward the faith, or will he immediately be swept away by them and say, “It means nothing; my family was wrong to make me fast all those years”?

There must be spiritual formation and, above all, an example in the home. Not, “Katina, you must fast; little Eleni, you must fast; George, you must fast.” We shall fast. And if the father sees that someone is ill, the child must learn that discernment is exercised. If the child himself becomes ill, he must learn that we may need to put a little oil in his food or give him a small cup of milk that day. “The rest of you must not be scandalized; little George is ill today.” All these things must be lived out in the home. Our homes today do not hatch chicks like these; they do not nurture such things. Our homes produce other things, because, above all, the mother—the queen of the home—is absent. Satan has succeeded in driving her out of the home, and today the children are left in the street, in the hands of a stranger, or with a grandmother who indulges their every whim, without meaning any harm, simply to pass the time and make the situation manageable. And so we have reached this condition and produce what you see today. We are in danger, truly in danger. The door opens, and the children immediately rush outside.

Does any of this mean anything to us? Today it passed unnoticed. No one opened the Synaxarion. No one opened the Old Testament to learn who these people were—people who move the hearts of generations, whose names have been inscribed and will be commemorated as long as the world endures and books remain in it. For these are the people from whom we must draw wisdom and through whom we must learn. I told you that God gave Daniel wisdom and understanding to interpret dreams and visions in general, did I not? He could explain them as God wished them to be understood by the person to whom He had shown them. Here in the second chapter there is a strange event. This King Nebuchadnezzar once had a dream. The dream was so strange, and he was so deeply troubled by what he saw, that it slipped from his memory.

He forgot it. In the morning he racked his brain, asking, “What was that dream I saw?” He could not piece it together or remember what it was. Then he decided to make an extraordinary demand of his wise men. He summoned some of them and ordered them both to tell him what the dream had been and to give him its interpretation. As you understand, this was quite absurd. If you tell me a dream, I may perhaps tell you what I know or attempt to offer some interpretation; that I can understand. But for me to tell you the dream you saw and then interpret it as well—that is quite absurd. And yet, that is precisely what he demanded. Those with official standing came, and those without it came; everyone regarded as wise came, but no one succeeded. Then came the order: every one of them was to lose his head. And so they began

to put the men to death.

Naturally, no one could do such a thing; it was impossible. Faced with this strange course of action, Daniel now came forward.

Daniel, it says, answered Arioch with prudence and wisdom. Arioch was the captain of the king’s guard and had received orders to kill all these men. As he went out to put the wise men of Babylon to death, Daniel answered and said to Arioch, the king’s officer, “Why has the king issued such a harsh and urgent decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel: the king was killing them because they had been unable to tell him what dream he had seen or to give its interpretation. Daniel went in and asked the king to grant him time. “Give me some time,” he said, promising that he would reveal the interpretation to the king. “I shall reveal it to you.” At the same time, he pleaded that the others not be killed. “Wait; do not kill them.”

Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah and to his other companions, Mishael and Azariah, so that they might seek mercy from the God of Heaven concerning this mystery. “Come, let us pray that God may illumine us in this difficulty and that these men may also be saved.” Now look: the men being slaughtered were their oppressors. Yet this is what love does. These young men, led by Daniel, surely fell to their knees and entreated the true God. They could have said, “Persia has, what do I know, a hundred million people. If there are a hundred fewer, is the world going to end? Let them do whatever they please.” But they did not do that. Let them be what they may.

They too are human beings created by God, even if they are idolaters. The young men showed love to this extent, and Daniel immediately called his companions: “Kneel down, so that neither Daniel and his companions nor the rest of the wise men of Babylonia may perish. Let these men not be lost either.” And the mystery was revealed. It is a great thing for a person to know this secret. Christians do not know the secret. Something happens to you—an illness, an accident, some misfortune—and they do not know which door to knock on. You may enter a Christian home filled on every side with icons, yet no one turns to any of them and says, “Saint Nicholas, Saint George, my Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Paraskeva, come quickly! We need you now, when this has befallen us. Illumine us; tell us how to act and what to do.”

The icons remain there merely to be dusted and to have a candle placed before them so that they can see—nothing more. That is how bewildered we are. Even when you go to a doctor, my friend, a vein will still have to be treated by the doctor, and you must pray, “Guide him to join it properly. Do not let him connect the wrong things and cause me even greater harm.” Not even at such a moment of need do we show ourselves to be wise. Here we see the key: “Kneel down, children. He will answer us. He will deliver us from this difficult moment—especially us, but also these people who are being cut down every day by the king’s foolishness.” And the mystery, it says, was revealed to Daniel

in a vision of the night. God showed him in a vision exactly what the king had seen. He showed him the dream: “Tell it to him and give him its interpretation as well.” God revealed it. Then Daniel blessed the God of Heaven. Daniel blessed Him and spoke. Afterward he offered this prayer of thanksgiving: “Blessed be the name of God from age to age, for wisdom and might are His.” This is true. Without the wisdom of God, we can do nothing. You see how our inventors claimed all these so-called achievements for themselves, declared God dead and buried, and made themselves gods. But it is not so. Everything belongs to Him. Indeed, as you know, we ought to be ashamed today of our inventions. Why, you may ask? Because these things already existed, and if we were truly intelligent, we should have discovered them

long ago. We did not create them. They were hidden, and there are still others waiting to be found. Yet instead of being ashamed and asking, “What were we doing all these years?” we do precisely the opposite. We erase the Creator, we remove God from the picture, and claim that everything is ours. But where did you find these things? Where did you find them? Suppose you went to move a wardrobe, discovered a hole behind it, and fifty gold coins fell out. Is that your achievement? Are they yours and not your father’s or grandfather’s, who placed them there for you to find? Does he count for nothing, while you receive all the credit merely because you found them? This is what we do. Daniel, however, immediately says, “Wisdom and understanding belong to God. Glory to Your name.” It is He who changes times and seasons, removes kings and establishes kings, gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and

the light dwells with Him. “To You, O God of my fathers”—he remembers his homeland and Jerusalem—“O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for You have given me wisdom and might and have now made known to me what we asked of You.” What we entreated You for, You revealed to us, for You have made the king’s matter known to us. “You have shown us what happened to the king.” Daniel then went to the captain of the guard and pleaded, “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon. You must not.” Arioch quickly brought Daniel before the king. He took him inside and said to the king, “I have found a man among the sons of the Judean captives

who will make the interpretation known to the king.” The king answered Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, and said, “Are you able to reveal to me the dream I saw and its interpretation?” Daniel answered before the king: “The mystery about which the king inquires cannot be revealed to him by wise men, enchanters, other learned men, magicians, or diviners. What you ask is impossible. But there is a God in Heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what shall come to pass in the last days.” The dream he had seen was connected with a prophecy concerning the last days. “Your dream and the visions that came into your head as you lay upon your bed are these.

As you lay upon your bed, thoughts arose in your nous, the spiritual intellect, about what would happen afterward, and the One who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to come.” He told you these things, but you did not retain them. “As for me, this mystery was not revealed to me because I possess greater wisdom than anyone else alive”—not because I am clever and discovered it myself, solved the problem, or possess more wisdom than others—“but so that the interpretation might be made known to the king and so that you might understand the thoughts of your heart. You, O king, were looking, and behold, there stood a great image. That image was immense, its brightness extraordinary; it stood before you, and its appearance was terrifying. The head of the image was of pure gold,” and so on. Daniel told him exactly what the image looked like and then interpreted

what would come to pass in the last days within his kingdom: that he would lose his kingdom, and so forth. This captive youth interpreted it for him there. Why? Because he had received God into his life at home; he turned to God and sought an answer. And that was not all: he also gained a position there. At the same time, what else happened? The true God was glorified, and the lives of a great many people were spared. Who takes this into account? God has not changed; we have changed. God is the same. He walks along the road with His hands outstretched. We do not want to take hold of God, and instead we rely on our own wisdom and our own understanding.

I do not know whether all this brings other examples to your mind. There is another event that follows, and I would like to bring it forward as well. In his egotism, Nebuchadnezzar made a great golden image of himself as a god. He was punished for this—he was indeed punished. For seven years the king became like a beast, exposed to the rain and the sun. His hair grew down to his feet, as did his nails. He fed on grass. Just as a madman may be abandoned, so he was abandoned for seven whole years. But there is something wondrous here that I do not want to overlook, and it is this:

After seven years, while he was out in the fields and the wild country, he came to himself. Earlier, he had commanded everyone to worship him. But now he said, “Did I make all these things? I made none of what I see—the mountains, the valleys, the rivers, the stars.” He said to himself, “I did not make them; therefore, I am not God.” From the moment he began to think differently, his nous, his spiritual intellect, began to return to its proper state, until at last he fully recovered his reason. For when a person is ruled by egotism, as I have said, God holds a screwdriver, as it were, and turns the person’s head—his nous—and he begins doing foolish things. God makes fools of the wise and discerning;

they go about trying to strike swallows perched on wires with sticks when God withdraws His grace from them. Therefore, we must never attribute our wisdom and knowledge to ourselves, but to God. “You, Lord, enlighten me as much as I need. You, Lord, preserve my nous and my knowledge for Your glory and for the service of my fellow human beings.” When Nebuchadnezzar humbled himself and said, “I made none of these things,” God helped him, and he came to himself again. And what else happened? He became king once more. Is it easy to make a madman king again after he has spent seven years outside eating grass? It is not easy. But when a person humbles himself, God takes that same screwdriver in His hand, turns the minds of everyone around him, and they raise him up and make him king. That is why Holy Scripture says:

“You are the One who establishes kings, and You are the One who removes kings from their thrones.” But we do not take these things into account. We say, “He went in, took charge, and succeeded.” No; that is false. The circumstances and the timing fell into place. So Nebuchadnezzar made a golden image and sent out heralds with trumpets to proclaim: “Whoever does not fall down and worship my golden image will be cast into the furnace, heated many times hotter than usual.” So all the people fell down in fear—some because they believed, others for reasons I do not know. They fell with their faces to the ground and worshipped Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image as a god. But there was also that company of four, and perhaps others as well,

who did not bow down. And there are always those eager to accuse others. They hurried to denounce these young men, saying that they would not worship the king’s golden image. So the king summoned them to give an account. Since the whole world worshipped him as a god, why would they not? They gave no thought to what awaited them. Listen, then:

“But,” he said, “if you do not worship, you shall be cast that very hour into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. And who is that God who will deliver you from my hands?” Those are weighty words, are they not? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar: “We have no need to answer you concerning this matter. We will give you no defense. If it is as you say, our God, whom we worship…” In other words: if you have the power to cast us into the furnace, nevertheless our God, whom we worship, is able to

deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and from your hand. Even if you cast us into the furnace, our God is mighty and can preserve us. He can deliver us from your hands as well. O king, He will deliver us. But even if He does not…” These are weighty words. If, for some reason known to God, we must fall into the furnace, be devoured by lions, or be slaughtered—whatever the reason known to Him may be—we accept it. “But even if He does not,” that is, even if He permits you to harm us, “let it be known to you, O king. Know this beforehand: we will not worship your gods, nor will we worship the golden image you have set up.” These are weighty words. To speak them, you must have courage; you must have been properly formed

in order to say them. Would our children today say such things? Would we? Where could we find the strength to say them? I love their answer: “We have one God, whom we worship. We know that He can deliver us from your hands, from your furnace, and from the wild beasts. Threaten us; act as you please; say whatever you wish. But even if He does not deliver us or free us from your hands,” they say,

“we will not worship it.” Many times we ask certain things of God because our reason tells us that this is how matters ought to turn out. A person must be released from prison; a child must rise from a sickbed; this or that must happen. To us, these things appear reasonable. But God knows that what we are asking may not be right. Leave it to the will of God.

He knows whether that person should rise from the sickbed. He knows whether we should find that job. He knows whether we should marry this man or that woman. He knows. Therefore, if He says that it should not happen, glory be to You, O God, that it did not happen. Unfortunately, we become bitter when we do not get our own way, though it is better to leave everything to God’s will, even if it causes us pain now. What pleases us now may bring us sorrow later. God, who also knows each person’s future, acts beforehand to protect him. We recite the Lord’s Prayer, but we do not even understand it. When we say to Him, “Your will be done,” we might as well change the words and say, “My will be done.” I say the words to You, but I do not really want Your will to be done when it does not agree with mine, and I refuse to agree with it. If only a person understood…

A person asks God for something—for himself, for his family, for his child, or for any number of things. If God grants what he asks, he should offer Him a great thank-you. If God does not grant it, he should thank Him a million times. For if God does not give it, does not consent to it, does not permit it, and does not allow what we ask to happen—though we are always seeking what we believe to be in our own interest—we do not know what God has protected us from. “My God, how You protected me! How You kept me from falling into that delusion, entering that household, or joining that partnership! My God, how You protected me! I thank You a thousand times.” But how often do we respond like that? Instead, with our heads bowed and our faces heavy, we say, “God does not listen to us sinners.” This is what the passage teaches here. “I know,” the young man says, “that God is almighty. But if He does not choose to exercise His almighty power in this way,

then that will be for my benefit. I will not worship your golden image.” In any case, the king became enraged. He forgot the service these young men—especially Daniel—had rendered him, and he commanded that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual, with vine branches and other fuel. The flames rose many fathoms high, and they cast the young men into it. Listen to what it says here: “Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He commanded that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than it was usually heated. And he commanded the strongest men in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Then those men were bound in their trousers and their turbans”—parts of their attire—“and their leggings and their other garments, and they were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.” Because the king’s command was so urgent and the furnace had been heated beyond measure, they did not wait for the flames to subside even a little. They went and threw the young men in while the fire was still at its height, and the men who cast them in were themselves burned to death.

“The flame of the fire killed those men who carried up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.” Night fell. King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished. He could not sleep at all. Troubled, he rose in haste and spoke to his nobles. He went near the furnace to see the results; he could not wait until morning. “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?” They answered the king, “Truly, O king; yes, three.” Then he said:

“I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are unharmed; and the appearance of the fourth is like the Son of God.” The Son of God changed the furnace into cooling dew. Do you want the furnace of your own life—your difficulties and adversities—to become clear and bearable? Seek Him and believe in Him. He has the power to turn bitterness into something sweet.

He will turn scorching heat into coolness and fire, as we see here, into a place where they could walk with ease; and the fourth had the appearance of the Son of God. Of course, it was not Christ Himself. It would have been an angel, who did not possess human nature and form, but appeared in that way. That, at any rate, is how the king saw him and how the prophet recorded it. Yet this shows that Christ alone can transform our circumstances. Matters will not change if you smash plates at a funeral, turn the pictures upside down, remove sweets from the house and refuse to serve them, wear mourning veils, or hang black flags. None of those things will help. Christ is the One who can cool the burning pain within you.

He is the One who will comfort you. He has two hands: with one He takes away, and with the other He supports. That is who He is. When He is missing, everything is missing. God is present everywhere, yet today He is absent everywhere from people’s lives. People do not know Him. They may know everything else, yet the One who is present everywhere is absent everywhere today.

Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and cried out: “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out and come here.” For he understood that another God was preserving them there inside the furnace. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the midst of the fire.

The result was this: the king’s officials, governors, and nobles saw that the fire had no power over the bodies of these men. They were not even singed, and their clothes did not smell of smoke or anything else. Such is God. This is the true God, our God.

Not a hair of their heads was burned; their trousers were unchanged, and no smell of fire had passed over them. Then Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said: “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego”—not his own god, nor Nebuchadnezzar himself—“who sent His angel and delivered His servants, who trusted in Him, disobeyed the king’s command, and surrendered their bodies rather than worship or bow down to any other god.” Who can do such things today, and who even cares to do them? This is what a person becomes when he has God with him. Therefore, besides striving to arm ourselves with God,

we must also look after those who depend on us and, together with all other knowledge, implant within them the true knowledge of the one God. He is the same yesterday, today, and unto the ages. He does not change. He is the same. The miracles that happened then happen now as well. The Church takes this passage and places it in the service of Great and Holy Saturday, saying: “The One who descended below is the same One who cooled the furnace with dew.” Just as those young men went down as though into Hades, into the fire, and suffered no harm, so the One who descends below will rise again incorrupt. This is a type—a foreshadowing—of the burial and Resurrection of our Christ. If God says that we must enter the furnace, Holy Scripture teaches, then we will enter the furnace.

He has the power to save us even from there. Or, if He says that we must pass into eternity through the fire, then through the fire we shall go, and we shall also receive the martyr’s crown. For a person to become a martyr is a great thing; it is a gift from God. Not everyone can become a martyr; it takes courage. In any case, the result was that King Nebuchadnezzar afterward issued a special decree that prayer and praise should be offered to the God of these children. And there you have it: these children might not have possessed a penny in their own homeland, but because they had God, they caused God to be glorified and made known even in the midst of idolatry, through the life of captivity they were living at that time. In any case, let us go further now.

There is one more thing, and then our time will be up. It was an age when... Nebuchadnezzar’s son, Belshazzar, a most impious man, gave a banquet and drank wine in the presence of a thousand concubines and nobles. And when he had tasted the wine and was in high spirits, he went and had the vessels from the Temple in Jerusalem brought out—the vessels that had been carried away during the captivity. They filled these sacred vessels with wine and drank from them, thus publicly mocking all that was sacred and holy. Such things happen here during Carnival as well. We see some people dressing up as bishops, others as priests, ridiculing everything. That is what they did there. And while all this was taking place in that great hall, the

revelry, we might say, was at its height. Suddenly, a hand appeared and began writing upon the plaster. No one knew what this hand actually was or what it was writing. Then everyone was seized with terror: “What is that? What is that?” Everyone in the hall froze; they were utterly frozen. The hand calmly wrote certain words and then disappeared, while the writing remained. The king was beside himself. He gave orders and summoned his officials, his wise men, the interpreters of mysteries, the diviners, the exorcists—everyone. He began to tremble. His legs... The queen was not there at that moment. I am telling you this briefly so that I do not have to read the whole passage aloud. Those of you who have the Old Testament,

read the fifth chapter of Daniel, where you will find what I am telling you now. There was a deathly silence. The revelry had been rising until it reached the heavens—and then, deathly silence. What had happened? Had everyone died? The queen rushed in. “What happened?” She went up to the king and saw him white with terror, his legs beating like a drum. “O king, live forever!” But how could the king live forever in such a state? You understand. She saw the writing and was also bewildered. Yet since none of those who had been summoned could give an answer, Daniel came to her mind. She told the king, “Do not be troubled.” Meanwhile, they had Daniel in prison. “Do not be troubled. There is a man who also interpreted your father’s dreams. Let us bring him here, and all will be well.”

The others—his wise men and the counselors of the palace—had given up. Then Daniel came from prison. It says that he washed and changed his clothes so that he might appear before the king as formally as possible. He came before the king, and they explained what had happened. “As for your gifts...” The king had told him, “If you interpret this for me, I will give you a gold chain and other rewards.” But Daniel said to him, “Keep your gifts for yourself, O king, and give your rewards to another. I will read the writing to the king and make its interpretation known to him.” I want no reward; I will reveal it. I want no gifts. “O king, the Most High God gave your father

majesty, glory, and all the rest, and all peoples and nations bowed before him. But afterward, because his heart was lifted up and hardened by pride, he was brought down from his royal throne, and his glory was taken away from him. He was driven away from the sons of men. The people cast him out, and his heart became like that of a beast. This is what I told you earlier. In any case, you then became king. But the result is that you too have exalted yourself against the Lord of Heaven. You had the vessels of His house brought before you, the vessels that had been taken from there, and wine was drunk from them—you and your nobles, your wives, and your concubines. And you praised gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor understand. But the God in whose hand is your very breath,

and under whose authority are all your ways, you have not glorified. Therefore, the palm of the hand was sent from before Him and wrote these words.”

οι προφητείες· γίνεται συζήτηση και για αυτή την περίπτωση του Δανιήλ. Και εκεί τα ονόματα θα μπορεί κανείς να τα θυμηθεί. Αλλά ο Δανιήλ έβαλεν εν τη καρδία αυτού να μην μιανθεί από των εδεσμάτων του βασιλέως, να μην φάει από το τραπέζι εκείνο. Έβαλε στην καρδιά του. Εμείς, αν δεν επιτυγχάνουμε ορισμένα πράγματα, και μάλιστα πνευματικά, είναι γιατί δεν το βάλαμε πείσμα. Απλώς το συζητούμε και λέμε: «Δεν γίνεται, αδύνατον». Όταν το βάλει πείσμα ο άνθρωπος ένα πράγμα, θα το επιτύχει. Βλέπουμε τους ανθρώπους που ερωτεύονται· άλλοι που ερωτεύονται καλώς, να πάρουν μια κόρη, να πάρουν ένα γιο, και άλλοι που ερωτεύονται για μοιχεία και για άλλα πράγματα, και το βλέπεις εκεί σατανικά να επιμένει. Γιατί για το κακό επιμένεις;

Αν ερωτηθούν και μιλήσουν ειλικρινά, έχουν να πούνε περισσότερα για τη μάνα παρά για κάθε άλλο. Οι άνθρωποι, λοιπόν, αυτοί που έφυγαν και βρέθηκαν στη Βαβυλωνία εκεί μόνοι τους, είχαν φόντα από το σπίτι. Τι φόντα θα έχει το παιδί σου όταν φύγει αύριο και πάει στο εξωτερικό να σπουδάσει; Ε, όχι, εφόσον εδώ, μέσα στην Ελλάδα, μέσα στη Χριστιανοσύνη, το φορτώνεις με τα σάντουιτς μέσα στις Μεγάλες Εβδομάδες και μέσα στις μεγάλες ημέρες της Χριστιανοσύνης, τι φόντα θα έχει όταν πάει παραπέρα εκεί; Πού θα σταθεί; Θα παρασύρει κάποιον προς τον εαυτό του ή θα παρασυρθεί αμέσως από αυτούς και θα πει: «Δεν είναι τίποτα και έχουν λάθος στο σπίτι που με νήστευαν τόσα χρόνια»;
