Summary

People remain distant from Christ and the Church through unbelief, ignorance, or a deliberate refusal to face God, judgment, and life after death. A faithful Christian life should bear such visible witness to Christ that it quietly challenges and awakens the consciences of others. Believers must endure one another’s weaknesses within the Orthodox Church, as Noah’s family remained inside the Ark despite its discomfort, trusting Christ’s patient work of repentance and healing.

This evening, with your patience and love, I would like to continue a subject we began fifteen days ago, but which was interrupted by the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. At one point I said that, broadly speaking, there are three categories of people. First are those who remain outside and far away—the indifferent, the cold, as we called them. They remain far from the Church because of their unbelief or their ignorance. Some remain outside through ignorance, while others remain outside deliberately. Of course, even those who deliberately remain outside...

do not truly understand. If they did, they would approach these matters differently. For these are not merely questions about Christ, Christianity, or the Church, as some people say. They concern each one of us personally. Does it matter to me whether I believe? Does it matter to me whether God exists? Does it matter to me whether there is life beyond the grave? This is a personal matter for me, because if there is no God and no life beyond the grave—if, if, if—why should I not cast aside all restraint at once and come here to feast on every good thing God has made?

Then the content of human existence in this world is empty. What consoles a person, strengthens him, and gives him courage to endure all these adversities? It is the knowledge that something exists beyond the grave.

A person awaits something and places his hope somewhere; from that hope he draws the strength to endure all the malice of Satan present in the world. This is why I said that some people remain outside because of unbelief or ignorance. But they are not the only ones; there are others as well. Some remain outside because they lead a prodigal life. Because of the dissolute life they live, they do not want God or the life to come to exist. It is not simply, “They do not exist,” but, “We would like them not to exist.” Why do you want them not to exist? So that we will not be brought to judgment and will not have to give an account. That is the reason. Such people live for revelry and for sins of the flesh.

They are people of horse racing and, I do not know, a thousand and one other pursuits that keep a person far from Christ, far from the Church, and far from the Gospel. Within himself, he insists that nothing exists so that he can continue enjoying these things.

But does he really enjoy them? Everything not founded upon Christ contains bitterness; it leaves gall and a residue behind. Have you seen how the water supplied by the Ulen company leaves a deposit inside a glass? It leaves something behind. The same is true of every carnal, worldly, egotistical, and self-serving thing a person pursues. For all these so-called pleasures and delights of the world...

are nothing but carob husks. That is what they are. Christ showed them to us in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Since we too are prodigals who live dissolutely, we experience the same results. Someone says, “I get up every morning with a bitter tongue and a bitter taste in my mouth.” Yes, that is how it is. Everything in a person who lives far from Christ is made bitter by the enjoyment of sin. A man who comes home in the morning after gambling, for example, will curse the priest if he hears him or hears the church bell ringing. And if he has lost, he will curse him twice over. Or suppose a man or woman comes home in the morning from an illicit lover’s embrace. Would such a person want Christ, the Gospel, and judgment to exist?

Would such a person want to hear churches, bells, and sermons? He cannot even bear the sight of them; everything appears dark to him. He does not want to listen. It is what we mean when someone says, “Do not tell me about it.” In other words, the person does not want to know what is true. Do you understand? Take another person who blasphemes. “Oh, nothing exists,” he tells you. “What are you talking to me about?” But if nothing exists, whom are you blaspheming? Are you blaspheming things that do not exist? That even demeans your own intelligence; it is not a fine thing. Yet because he blasphemes, he too finds a way to believe that nothing exists, so that he will not be judged. A thousand and one kinds of people remain outside the Church of Christ because their lives are not right. One man is lazy and does not want to work. So he commits robberies and snatches a woman’s handbag...

or breaks into someone else’s apartment, robs the post office, and does a thousand other things. “Nothing exists,” he says. Another person will even tread upon the Holy Altar to steal the gold oil lamp hanging above it. “Nothing exists.” And he says nothing exists in order to justify his deed. Christ, of course, has placed a constable inside every person: the conscience. But as I have told you before, many people have rendered their conscience useless. I do not remember where I was speaking when I gave this example. I say, “I have a pancreas, but it does not work; that is why I have diabetes.” In the same way, another person has a conscience, but his conscience does not work, and consequently he walks in darkness. Imagine if there were no red warning lights. What would happen? The conscience is that red warning light.

What would happen to cars if there were no red warning light when the oil stopped circulating? Every engine would burn out when it overheated. Everything would burn, whether people were on the road or out in deserted places. I mean that red light on the dashboard. The human conscience is like that. Yet many of us have disabled it, so that it no longer works. The conscience must always be kept clean from sins. It is like a glowing coal that gives warmth and can often be kindled into flame again. Many sins, together with estrangement from the Church, the Gospel, and religion in general, callous the conscience. They heap refuse over it and bury it underneath. It must be rekindled. We must clear away everything piled on top and uncover the coal beneath.

We must blow upon it so that it may warm and enlighten us. The Ascension of the Theotokos, the Annunciation, children within her—yet a person answers his conscience: “Sit down. That is how the world is. Are we not going to live? Most people do it. Are we the ones who must uphold what is right?” Do you understand? “There are women who could feed whole villages and yet have only one child. Are we supposed to have a second and a third? Who can bear that burden?” The conscience cries out, “I called to you,” but the person does not answer or heed its cry. When you do not heed it, the conscience will cry and cry and cry, and eventually it will stop crying. And woe to us if the human conscience ceases to cry out. A person then becomes what we call conscienceless—someone no longer reproved by his conscience, the faculty God gave him to keep him watchful, so that he would not fall or act against what first benefits him and then serves the glory of God. For we have reversed the order.

Is the glory of God really the issue? God has no need of us. Let us do what we ought for our own sake, and let the glory of God come afterward—even though the glory of God should come first and our own good afterward. God accepts it even if we reverse the order, yet we do not act even then. Thus, the conscience of many people does not function. They have calloused it, as we were saying, and when a person callouses his conscience, he cannot perceive where he is going. I will speak another time about blind people who read their own script by touch. One thing they take care of is to keep the tips of their fingers from becoming hardened, so that by passing them over the raised dots they can read, find the pages and chapters, chant, and so forth. It is exactly the same with us. When a person allows sin to enter within him—whether lying or theft...

jealousy, fornication, adultery, blasphemy, or other things—what happens? His soul hardens, his conscience hardens, and he becomes thick-skinned, as we say. After that, nothing moves him. He regards everything as natural, although it is unnatural. He regards everything as reasonable, although it is irrational, and he acts against the welfare of his immortal soul. Wherever Satan passes into the soul, he leaves his imprint and hardens it. As long as a person remained far from sin, he would blush upon hearing an obscene remark or even mild foul language. But now you blush because of him, for the devil has gained control over him.

He has hardened. He allowed sin to enter within him, and now he respects no one, acknowledges no one, and is moved by nothing. You may see a young girl, a child, who is shy and blushes before her father and mother. But once she enters into sin, falls into someone’s embrace, or does some other thing, her mother must hide from her. Her father must hide, and everyone else as well. She can no longer bear them; she has become hardened and savage. You are dealing with a different person, because the other one, as we call him, has come between them and causes all this harm. So, I say, one of the great gifts God has given a person is his conscience. Yet through sin he callouses it, and it no longer speaks. This is why, the more a person examines himself, discovers his faults, and confesses them...

the more sensitive his conscience becomes, until it tolerates nothing—not even a slight lie or an improper thought passing through his nous, his spiritual intellect. While another person schemes, plots, and does astonishing things against everyone, this person does not even want such things discussed. He does not even want to entertain the thought: “Why should I be there? Why should I say that?” His conscience reproves him. It becomes more sensitive because he guards it and does not allow anything to accumulate over it; he knows that such matter can callous it. For that very reason, he accepts nothing sinful. These are people who are watchful. But those who live a different kind of life—a worldly, carnal, self-serving, criminal life, and so forth—understand none of this. They do not want the Gospel to exist; they do not want the Lord to exist and remind them; they do not want Christ or the Church to exist. They want nothing to exist.

In this way a person justifies his existence outside the Church and avoids being reproved. He does not even want to pass by or hear people who might remind him of something. A Christian’s life should be such, as Saint Photios the Great says, that it speaks for itself and reproves the life of another. Your life should be such that another person’s conscience is awakened and reproved by it. This has surely happened many times. Many people who have a relationship with Christ go to certain homes and say nothing, yet those in the house whisper, “Aunt Katina has arrived.” Suddenly there is a deathly silence. They had no intention of fasting, yet they fast that day because it is Wednesday or Friday, simply because someone has appeared who bears Christ within. You know this. So those who remain outside are people who live a sinful, carnal life and want nothing to do with spiritual matters.

Why would such a person want to hear about Christ? He will come home in the morning from gambling or from someone’s embrace. He does not want the things of Christ. He wants Christmas as a public holiday. He wants it because he receives his thirteenth-month bonus. He accepts what John offers but rejects John himself. Then he sleeps without a care, saying, “Nothing exists.” There are many such people, I tell you. Carnal sins above all are what cut a person off from the Church and from Christ. Such people have no desire to hear about Christ or to be reproved at all. I have told you the story of the courtesan Lais. Although she bought a mirror, an extremely precious item in those days, at an astronomical price, she smashed it the next day. Why? Because it dared to show her wrinkles.

It showed her that she had begun to grow old, so she smashed it. But the little mirror was not at fault, nor did the wrinkles belong to it. If you are sinful, is the Gospel to blame? Suppose you say the preacher is to blame; the preacher is not to blame either. The problem is sin. Stop sinning, and you will see how everything comes into the light. As the people say, “A clear sky does not fear lightning.” What does that mean? Such a person does not fear God’s warnings, Hell, or anything else. But because we have fouled our own nest and do not wish to put it right and cleanse it in the manner Christ teaches, we do not want to hear about these things. There are also people who remain outside while making excuses for themselves. Consider people with various hobbies and weaknesses. Early in the morning you see six, seven, or ten men hire a car and leave to go hunting. Many times they have to be recovered from the sea. I remember a car full of hunters plunging into the water one Sunday morning at Agios Konstantinos, out by the road we take to Kamena Vourla. They all drowned—the men, the dogs, everyone.

Then there are tragedies: someone shoots his brother; a gun recoils and kills his child; all sorts of terrible things happen. These are their weaknesses. On Sunday mornings and feast days, so many tragedies occur. Such a person wants neither the Church nor anything else; he disregards everything. When the priest begins ringing the bell to call people, he says, “It means nothing. Down with Sunday! I do not believe in Christ, I do not believe in priests, I believe in nothing.” How can you speak to a person enslaved to that weakness? You see another man with his boat, standing on some rock as he fishes. He does not go to church first. He goes fishing at the crack of dawn and remains there all day, through the whole Sunday or feast day. You may ask, “Is it wrong for a person to fish?” It is wrong when it comes at the expense of your religious duties. If you have time on another occasion, go and stay there fishing. But when it comes at the expense of your church attendance...

that is another matter. Others leave for various sporting events. You see a man drive to Thessaloniki or Ioannina because, he says, he is a sports fan. He will travel all night, go there, spend his entire week’s wages, and so forth. Will he go to church the next day? If his team loses, he will begin blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ. He will return the following night, toward dawn on Monday, and will not go to work. He wants nothing to do with a priest; if he sees one on Monday morning, he will say the priest has tied him in knots. “He brings me bad luck because I met a priest.” The priest is not to blame. The priest does not tie your knots; he unties them. You have been tying those knots yourself since Friday afternoon. If a person were willing to think about it in this way, he would realize that he himself is to blame, but he refuses to consider it. There are a thousand and one other cases. Can a gambler have any relationship with the Church? How will he go to Church? How will he keep from blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ when the card he was waiting for did not come? He will resort to cheating and lying, along with a thousand other things.

People who live carnally, who have mistresses or lovers, and so forth—these things cost money. Where will you get it? You will steal; you will resort to fraud. People who had been honest in every respect became entangled in carnal sin and turned dishonest in their financial dealings for the sake of a mistress and such things. They ended up in prison, ruined their homes, and left others behind to suffer. God is not to blame. But one day the curtain will fall, and then the person will see. Yet it will do him no good, because even the mole, as you know, sees on the last day, when it is about to die, but gains nothing from it. Do you understand? This, then, is the first and very large category. There is also another category, which I have made a few notes about, and it is a matter neither of ignorance nor of unbelief.

It is not necessarily because of some carnal sin, or because of anything worldly, or anything of that sort. You hear many people say, “I will go to church, light my candle, and do all these things.” Yes, compared with those in the first category, this is good. But often it is not good in an absolute sense, because even those who go to church have not managed to put their affairs in order so that they are no longer found guilty. As we have said before, Saint Basil the Great says, “A good thing is not good unless it is done well.” So too, if you go to church but do not go in the right way and with a proper disposition, even that is not good. You cannot say that because you go to church, all is well, while throughout the week you have been stealing from the shop. What good does it do you to go on Sunday? What comes of it?

That is not the purpose. The purpose is this: you will go to Church and you will not steal. You will go to Church and you will not tell your wife, your child, your husband, or your neighbor to go to the devil. For we see many people who are within the Church and connected with the Church, and who consider it wrong not to attend, yet they do not correct their faults. Now you will ask me, “Is the Church only for saints?” Let me take this opportunity to say: it is not for saints; it exists to make saints. We are not going to tell such a person, “Do not go to Church because you blaspheme. Do not go to Church because you steal. Do not go to Church because you lie.” No. Take care: go to Church, but correct these things as well.

For if you do not correct them, you go to Church in vain. And I dare say that this includes a very large proportion of religious people. If we suppose there are one hundred churchgoers, eighty or ninety of us fall into this category. We attend church burdened with a multitude of sins, without wanting or striving to put them right. Then, when we look at others who do not attend church and are completely indifferent, we say, “Among the blind, I am the one-eyed man.” But the point is not to be one-eyed among the blind. I must have clear sight among those who see clearly; I must stand among the angels. Among devils I may look like a saint, but what am I among the angels? Perhaps I am just the opposite. This is precisely why we must pay attention to this second category: people who attend church but make no effort to put their affairs in order.

For the Church is not the Holy of Holies, into which only angels and archangels may enter. It is a hospital. I say this because some people are scandalized. Indeed, while abroad I met a man who had become a Protestant because, as he said, he had found neither peace nor even courteous understanding in the Orthodox Church.

One evening we were at the same table. I did not know that he was a Protestant, but it came out during the conversation. I remember saying to him, “Now that you have gone there, have you found peace?” “I have,” he replied. “Why?” I asked. “Because I left the Orthodox Church,” he said. “Do you mean that all the devils are in the Orthodox Church?” “Yes,” he answered.

He knows where the truth is. Of course he knows. Where, then, is the truth? Could it be where Satan is fighting against it? And when Satan sets himself against the truth, does that make it false? Do you now have no Satan where you are? Have all the devils come to us? Are you and all those who think as you do entirely without fault? That is the question. Indeed, I hear this from many people. One says, “I go to the Catholic Church, where people are courteous and behave properly.” Another goes to a Protestant church because the people there are this way or that way, and so forth. Apparently, all of us Orthodox are devils. Yet such a person does not consider that the evil one does not trouble those who are already his own, while all the demons crowd into Orthodox churches and attack everyone, from the Holy Altar to the candle stand. He does not understand this. So, do you go to Church expecting to find saints? No. When you go to Church, you will find sick people, just as you do in a hospital. One cries out here, another weeps there, another groans somewhere else. They disturb you, but you remain in the hospital.

And if they place you in a large ward with many others, you remain in the hospital so that you may recover. Will you refuse to remain in the Church because there are other sick people there, perhaps more seriously ill than you? Many Christians fail to understand this and either distance themselves from the Church or go looking for some prestigious, ideal church. You will go to Church as a sinner, as a sick person, and enter that hospital. See to it that you yourself gradually recover. You have your wounds and weaknesses, and I have mine. Each of us must bear with the other and remain there. If Satan draws you outside, there is a flood outside.

There is a beautiful answer to this in the account of the Ark. I do not know whether you have noticed it. Those eight people found themselves in a very difficult situation during the six months they spent there. They lived surrounded by filth.

They were among oxen, crocodiles, snakes, cries, bellowing, and everything else. Or do you imagine they had detergents and waste-disposal systems there, with hoses for washing and cleaning? For six months they remained amid the filth and stench of all those beasts—and they stayed there. They remained inside the Ark! By extension, this also applies to some whom Satan draws away, not only from here but even from the monasteries where they have gone to struggle, persuading them to seek somewhere holier. My friend, this is where you must struggle, amid the weaknesses of others. Here is where you will struggle; here is where you will do this work. Many keep searching. If you find such a place, go—I am not telling you not to. But if you do not find it, withdraw into a little corner, sit down, take up your prayer rope, and say the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” Struggle in this way, and do not be deceived into thinking that the others in the Church are to blame. You go to a hospital to recover, just as the others have gone, and you should rejoice.

Acknowledge that you too, being human, have some illness within you. You may not have illness A, which your neighbor has in a more serious form, but you have C, D, or E. This is how a person should think. Many, then, remain outside because they find such people within the Church. Among those inside, many are talkative, others refuse to have children, and there are all sorts of other faults. Yet Christ is at work. One by one, little by little, each person’s time comes. Someone may have attended Church for years. I will now tell you two or three examples. I remember speaking the year before last in a church at an institution for the chronically ill. There was a man who had lived there for twenty-five years and served as a church warden. He was an agronomist from Corfu.

For years he had been an indispensable church warden. Yet never in his life had he received Holy Communion, and never in his life had he gone to Holy Confession. Everyone regarded him as the holiest of men, but he had never had a true encounter with Christ. After twenty-five years, God arranged for me to go there on the Fridays of the Akathist Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos and give a series of talks, so that the day would not pass idly. He came to repentance, came to himself, went to Holy Confession for the first time after twenty-five years as a church warden, and received Holy Communion. And when that institution eventually opened its gates, he was the first to leave and return home to his spouse. At the church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Haidari, I should also mention, there was another church warden

who had never received Holy Communion and had never gone to Holy Confession. I went there shortly before Christmas and spoke, and for the first time he came to himself. The congregation and all who knew him marveled when he received Holy Communion for the first time. On another occasion, I was on an island with a father confessor. There was an eighty-three-year-old man whose surname was Frangos. For forty-five years he had been the indispensable church warden at Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Everyone called him a holy man, yet he had never gone to Holy Confession and had never received Holy Communion. A Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Naval Academy, and three hierarchs remained in the church there.

You could hear old Frangos calling across the island in a loud voice:

“Where is the priest who came from Athens with Panagopoulos?” He meant me. So they notified the priest: “Old Frangos is looking for you.” And the priest went to him. “I cannot bear it any longer,” Frangos said. “I must go to Holy Confession.” He confessed, received Holy Communion, and died three days later. Forty-five years inside the Church! Saint Nicholas bore patiently with him; Saint Nicholas waited for him, and at last his time came. Ask the Metropolitan of Hydra about another incident from the time when he was protosynkellos in Patras and I had begun going there to speak. A certain man kept asking for him but could never find him. Again and again he sought him, but could not find him anywhere. “I am there,” the Metropolitan would say. “I am at Theotrofos; I am at the offices of the protosynkellos.” But the man could find him nowhere. He was hiding from him.

One day the man waited for him at the bishop’s residence. He shut the door behind him, planted himself there, and waited. Where else could the Metropolitan come out? He would have to come through that door. As soon as he appeared, the man fell to his knees before him. “What do you want?” the Metropolitan asked. “I heard that you have been looking for me.” “I have no time; it is impossible, as you can see.” “You will listen to me. I want you to hear my confession. I cannot bear Panagopoulos’s tongue any longer.”

For years that man had never done such a thing. Does not each person’s hour eventually come? God will send someone. The person may receive Panagopoulos; God may send George, Augustine, Vemmeras, or someone else. He may show him a dream or place a printed tract in his hands. Something will happen: an earthquake, a death, cancer, or something else. God will try to help him, provided that the person himself is willing. Therefore, never—absolutely never—

say that the people inside the Church are not as they should be, and therefore ask whether we should go there at all. If you are scandalized here because gossip reaches you, or because the person beside you recites the Trisagion and pretends to be the priest or even the bishop—for we have such people too—then move a little farther away. Of course, may God help that person also to move beyond such behavior. But never leave the Church because of one person. All kinds of people are inside, and you do not know when God will call them. One person comes slowly, little by little. You do not know what has caused someone to remain as he is. You do not know whether the priest himself has given him reason to hold back, or his father, his teacher, his mother, or someone else. You do not know each person’s story. Know this one thing: go and pray for yourself, for the other person, and for your fellow human being.

We always go to Church, stand there, and offer our petitions for little Angeloula, little Vasilikoula, little Giorgakis, an uncle with cancer, our grandfather, or our grandmother. These things are good and holy, but what about the others around you? Do they not matter? Do they have no needs to bring before God? Of course they do. The evil one first sows his suggestions among all these people, who have already been stirred up by ignorance. And I ask one final thing: if every person who enters the Church did this, he would not have only his own little prayer to his credit; he would have everyone’s prayers. For if I pray for everyone, and you pray for everyone, and another person prays for everyone, then heaven will be besieged by our prayers, and heaven will rain down mercy. There is, then, a category of people who go to Church but also blaspheme. Some blaspheme because they cannot break the habit. Pray to Christ about it.

He said, “Without Me you can do nothing.” Have you asked Him to help you stop? That is the point. Yet you go on blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, or someone else. There are other forms as well, such as telling people to go to the devil, as many do. Is there any greater blasphemy than that? If you blaspheme Christ, you blaspheme Christ alone. But if you tell a person to go to the devil, you blaspheme Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, God—you blaspheme everything. For Christ came to deliver the human person from the devil, to whom you are wishing that person would go. And some people ask, “Do you not blaspheme?” “No,” another replies, “only sometimes I use that expression.” Secondly, they say, it is not blasphemy.

So there are also people who have been coming to the Church for years, yet they remain blasphemers and refuse to change. There are people who attend church but steal throughout the week, or who have stolen and never made restitution. Do you think there are no such people? They have wronged others, stolen, and withheld building lots, fields, tools, clothes, books, money—the sweat and blood of others—whether from individuals, legal entities, or the state. When God said, “You shall not steal,” He did not say, “You may steal from the state, but you must not steal from anyone else.” He said, “You shall not steal.” Anything that is not yours, that you did not honestly and morally obtain through your own sweat, blood, and labor, belongs to someone else. It must be returned during this life, because if a person dies...

I would like to illustrate this with the example of a married couple. If I rise tomorrow from the dead, I am no longer my wife’s husband, nor does my wife have any marital claim upon me. Death has dissolved the marriage. But if I die after stealing or wronging someone and then rise from the dead, I still owe what I took; the debt remains. As I have said before, whenever a person sins, three witnesses record it. First, his conscience records it and continually cries out to him that what he possesses belongs to someone else. The land beneath his feet, the things he walks upon, and everything he has taken are not his. Second, his guardian angel records it. And third, the devil records it.

If the conscience bears witness, or if the devil chooses to accuse him, the devil will appear before Christ with his records and say, “On such-and-such a day, in such-and-such a place, this amount was taken,” giving every detail. Because Christ is impartial, He must render justice. You must have those charges erased. They are erased when you confess to God the sin of breaking the commandment, “You shall not steal,” and when the stolen things are restored and returned to the person who was deprived of them. Then the matter is put right, because such things are set right through restoration. When a person does good, two witnesses record it; when he does evil, three record it. When he does good, only his conscience and the angel record it. Yet you erase the good things that have been recorded, while the evil remains written down and will be presented against you. And bear in mind that, in teaching about the judgment, the Church—which desires to help mankind—shows us a set of scales: Satan comes burdened with...

scrolls filled with sins, ready to pile them onto the scales so that they tip to his side and he can claim the person. But whatever a person confesses is mysteriously removed from Satan’s hands and from his ledgers; Satan himself admits this. Perhaps you have heard the account of an archimandrite who once bound a demon dwelling within a possessed woman and, in the name of Jesus Christ, compelled it to explain what happens in confession. At first it refused, but eventually it yielded and spoke. It said, “When you confess, you think it is the priest who hears your confession. But this does not concern the priest alone.” It also concerns—speaking in terms familiar to ordinary people—Gabriel and Michael, the archangels who stand beside our Christ.

“Whatever you intend to confess,” it said, “we try to make you withhold or forget, so that you may remain ours. But whatever you do confess is dealt with. We do not know how it happens. We simply find our ledgers erased, without knowing how they were wiped clean.” This is the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit. Satan cannot know how it happens. He sees that it happens, but he does not know how. It is like that beautiful saying of John Chrysostom: “I know that You are, but I do not know what You are. I see that You exist from everything that comes to pass. The heavens and divine paradises are created, but what You are and how You are, I do not know.” This, then, should concern many of us. With God’s help, seek to settle your outstanding debts here, because they cannot be settled there. I often hear of people who have wronged or robbed others and done such things, and who then say that they will give the money as alms.

What right do you have to give another person’s sweat away as alms? You even make yourself appear generous with what you have stolen. Even if you stole from the state, you have not been appointed to give someone else’s property away as charity. If the person still lives, the property must be returned to him, either anonymously or openly. If he has died, it must be given to his relatives. If there are no relatives left and all have departed this life, then it should be given somewhere in his name—to a church or a charitable institution, for example. His name must still be attached to it. The person whose sweat earned it should be commemorated, perhaps at a monastery or wherever one chooses. In this way, a person can set the matter right. There is also a third situation: someone may have stolen or wrongfully taken so much that he is now unable to repay anything.

He should confess it: “I stole, I wronged someone, I carried out this scheme, this fraud against the state, an organization, my relative, my neighbor, a helpless person, an heir,” or whatever the case may be. In this way, at least one part of his guilt—his guilt before God—can be removed. For whenever a person sins, there are two dimensions: one above and one beside him. He sins against another person, but at the same time he sins against God’s commandment. He must therefore ask God’s forgiveness for stealing; and if he is unable to set matters right himself, God will provide a way. You must bring it out and say, “Yes, I did this. I did not understand. I acted wickedly,” or whatever the truth may be. Tell it exactly as it is. When you go to a physician for a venereal disease, you stretch out, uncover yourself, and show him even your most private parts in detail so that syphilis or some other disease can be treated in time. In precisely the same way, you must bring this sin out into the open.

Bring everything rotten, dead, and filthy into the light before a spiritual father, an honorable elder—wherever you may find one—so that the wound may be cleansed. If the wound is not cleansed, there is no salvation, and it must be cleansed here. Many among us steal a person’s honor through words; others cheat with weights or measurements. There are many ways to steal, including hypocrisy and similar deceit. These debts must be paid and these matters set right here. Many of us today are not innocent of such sins, yet we still attend church. And what is the result? We hinder grace; we make it difficult for grace to act within us. We do not receive what we otherwise could receive. As I told you, this too is one category of people.

Likewise, if a physician sat at the doors of the church with a tongue depressor and said to each person, “Open your mouth,” so that he could examine our tongues, he would not find a single person—not even the priest below who celebrates the Divine Liturgy, nor the sacristan—who never tells lies while remaining within the Church. Yet we do not undertake the struggle against falsehood as we should. You may ask, “Can it be eliminated entirely?” At least let us reduce it, my children. I am not claiming that you can always speak with complete frankness. There are so many circumstances in this world in which a person is sometimes compelled by events to say something untrue; otherwise, the opposite harm may result. A brother corrected me the other day, saying that I should not have mentioned something because I had made it easier for many people to lie. He said I should not even have related what Saint Spyridon did. According to him, I should not have said that either. Yet leniency also contains a truth.

I understand his concern, but do you know what Ecclesiastes says? “Do not be overly righteous.” You are still a sinner. In trying to enforce justice or to be unyielding, you may cause terrible harm. When I once discussed this matter with an elder on the Holy Mountain, he told me, “If you always tell the truth without discernment, you will be condemned.” But these are matters requiring discernment. The brother was naturally afraid that, since we lack the discernment to know when such an exception applies, we might use it as an excuse and tell lies from morning until night. And so our tongue becomes filthy—trampled upon and used by the one from below. The tongue was not given to us for this. It was given so that God might be glorified: “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord,” and, “Let all that is within me bless His holy name.” Yet here again we find ourselves at fault.

So within the Church there are people who attend the services yet belong to this second category: they tell lies. Some blaspheme, some steal, and some refuse to return what they have stolen. Another class consists of people who attend church but do not fast. I do not know whether you heard Sunday’s talk, when someone told me, “I do everything else and observe everything carefully, but I consider fasting to be of no importance.” In that case, Christ was wrong to fast; the Prophet Elijah was wrong to fast for forty days; Moses was wrong to fast; and the Apostles were wrong to establish that clergy should be deposed and laypeople excommunicated if, without illness or another valid reason, they break the fast on Wednesday, Friday, or during Great Lent.

If so, we have distorted the truth. We are the ones who are wrong. I understand when someone cannot fast or lacks the strength to do so. The Church shows condescension, and so do the Canons. Fasting is certainly not intended to fill sanatoriums and hospitals. Its purpose is to empty houses of corruption, to empty such places, and to tear down unlawful beds. That is what fasting is for. If young people fasted today, these houses of corruption would not exist. All such establishments are fed by the belly. Make the belly fast for three days, and the desires will wither. Carnal fantasies fade away; everything fades, and unlawful beds are cast down. This is the purpose of fasting. We cannot treat as nothing those things that the Church has established. When the Church has instituted something, Christ Himself says, as it were, “I raise My hands over it in blessing.” I cannot teach the opposite.

Yet some consider fasting to be nothing, while continuing to attend church and assuring themselves that all is well. There are still other cases, and I shall mention one. Some people attend church entirely on their own terms: they enter whenever they wish and leave whenever they wish. They imagine they are entering a polling station or a neighborhood café, where they can go in, order some special item, take it, and leave. Yet they would never behave that way at an ordinary social dinner to which they had been invited. They would arrive early, remain until the end, sit at the table, and wait until the hosts were ready for them to leave, thanking them before they went; otherwise, their hosts might be offended. That, after all, is simply good manners.

They would not treat other people that way. Even if no one had any written rule or stood nearby to accuse them, they still would not behave so in another person’s home. Yet they do it in the house of God, thinking they may arrive and leave whenever they please. This is wrong. Do not leave before you hear, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” And if you are not there when the priest says, “Blessed is our God,” the angels and archangels will descend and find you at fault. Of course, some people must arrive later. A mother, a sister, an elderly nun, or an elder may be unable to go out very early in the morning cold. A woman may be delayed while caring for her child, waking the child, and bringing the child with her. Someone else may be caring for a sick person and must wait an hour until another person comes to relieve him. There are many reasons. Work itself often compels us. But those of us who are free cannot claim for ourselves the terms of such economia. God accepts all these acts of economia.

God blesses them all, whether someone comes at the eleventh hour or from the very beginning. But there must be a genuine reason, not mere convenience—not simply because I choose it, or because I wait to ask whether the third bell has rung before getting out of bed. No. I should come to the Church and leave in the proper manner. I should not take the antidoron from the candle stand, but receive it from the priest’s hand, kissing that bloodstained hand which has sacrificed Christ mystically, so that I may receive the blessing. Otherwise, I take the place of Judas. Before the Mystical Supper had ended, and before the thanksgiving over the bread was completed, Judas went out, and Satan entered into him. Anyone who leaves early—whether a mother hurrying to boil an egg for a small child because she fears the child will perish from waiting another two minutes, or anyone else...

whatever the reason may be—should leave with fear and trembling, except, as I have said and repeat, in truly exceptional circumstances. The rest of us, who by God’s help are able to remain standing, should stay there and, if possible, receive the antidoron not from the candle stand but from the priest’s hand. Only one person is not obliged to receive the antidoron from the priest’s hand: the person who has received Holy Communion. That person should take it from the small basket held nearby, so as not to kiss the priest’s hand, lest some trace of the Holy Gifts he received remain upon it. Everyone else should receive it from the priest’s hand and receive his blessing. Yet we do not even do this properly. So I would like to pause here and remind each of us, myself included, to ask: Do any of the things we have discussed place us within one of these categories? If they do, I am not telling you to correct everything at once. Let us begin to correct these things little by little, because Christ is waiting for us. Amen.

γνωρίζουν, δεν γνωρίζουν. Αν γνώριζαν, διαφορετικά θα συμπεριφέρονταν μπροστά στα θέματα αυτά. Γιατί δεν είναι θέματα του Χριστού ή του Χριστιανισμού, όπως λένε ορισμένοι, ή της Εκκλησίας. Είναι ατομικά θέματα. Με ενδιαφέρει εμένα να πιστεύσω; Με ενδιαφέρει εμένα να υπάρχει Θεός; Με ενδιαφέρει εμένα να υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου; Είναι προσωπικό θέμα δικό μου, διότι αν δεν υπάρχει Θεός, αν δεν υπάρχει ζωή πέρα του τάφου, αν, αν, αν, δεν πετάω τα μυαλά μου μια ώρα γρηγορότερα και να πάω εδώ πέρα να φάω τα μοσχάρια, τις μελιτζάνες του Θεού;

δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο ειμή ξυλοκέρατα. Ξυλοκέρατα είναι. Τα παρουσίασε ο Χριστός μας στην Παραβολή του Ασώτου Υιού. Καθότι και εμείς, άσωτοι και ζώντες ασώτως, έχουμε τα ίδια αποτελέσματα. «Σηκώνομαι», λέει, «κάθε πρωί και είναι πικρή η γλώσσα μου, πικρό το στόμα μου». Ναι, έτσι είναι, και από απολαύσεως αμαρτίας κάθε τι του ανθρώπου που ζει μακριά από τον Χριστό. Ένας που ήρθε το πρωί από το χαρτί, επί παραδείγματι, αν ακούσει τον παπά και χτυπήσει η καμπάνα, θα τον βλαστημήσει. Κι αν είναι και χαμένος, μάλιστα, θα τον βλαστημήσει δύο φορές. Αν είναι ο άλλος ή η άλλη που θα 'ρθει το πρωί από την αγκαλιά του παρανόμου, τι θα κάνει; Αυτή θέλει να υπάρχει Χριστός, να υπάρχει Ευαγγέλιο, να υπάρχει κρίση;

Ένεκα σαρκικού, έτσι, αμαρτήματος, ούτε κοσμικό, ούτε, ούτε, ούτε. Ακούς πολλούς ανθρώπους που λένε ότι «στην εκκλησία μου θα πάω, το κερί μου θα το ανάψω και όλα αυτά θα τα κάνω». Ναι, είναι καλό αυτό το πράγμα εν σχέσει με τους πρώτους. Όμως πολλές φορές δεν είναι καλό απόλυτα, γιατί και αυτοί οι οποίοι πηγαίνουν στην εκκλησία δεν έχουν κατορθώσει να τακτοποιήσουν τα θέματά τους, ώστε να μη συλλαμβάνονται ένοχοι. Όπως έχουμε πει και άλλη φορά, ο Μέγας Βασίλειος λέγει ότι «το καλόν ου καλόν, εάν μη καλώς γένηται». Και εδώ να πας στην εκκλησία, αν δεν πας σωστά στην εκκλησία και εντάξει στην εκκλησία, αυτό δεν είναι και αυτό καλό. Δεν μπορείς να πεις, διότι πας εσύ στην εκκλησία, μα ταυτόχρονα όλη τη βδομάδα έκλεβες το μαγαζί. Τι έτσι Κυριακή πας με κι εσένα; Τι βγαίνει από αυτό;
