Summary
Worldly success, wealth, and status cannot satisfy the human soul, because the deepest obstacle to Christ is the ego itself. Christ recognizes Zacchaeus’s smallest movement of faith, calls him by name, and offers far more than he sought by choosing to remain in his house. His story calls Christians to persistent spiritual desire, humility, confession, purification, and trust in the transforming grace of the Holy Spirit.

Tonight I would like our subject to be drawn from today’s Gospel reading, because it contains a very serious teaching, and I would not want it to pass unnoticed. You know, many people do not accept Christianity—that is, they do not come to Christ—because of the many obstacles they say stand in their way. For the most part, they name the world, money, and social position. These are the obstacles people usually put forward.
In this way, a person justifies remaining far from Christ. It is natural, and it is true that these things exist, but in reality they are not the obstacle. The real obstacle preventing someone from following the Christian path is the self—one’s own ego. It is not the world, as people say, nor social position, nor money, because many who possessed high positions, great wealth, and a good name chose to follow Christ. They were few, yet they were not held back by what we call these difficulties.
It is true that people struggle greatly
to acquire money, improve their position, and gain prestige in the world. Yet whatever they do, however much they acquire, and whatever they achieve, it will never fill their whole being. The soul always remains empty, and they continue to feel a void within. A person must find that which truly fills the soul. We have seen people with great wealth who became poor. We have seen people of high position end up in psychiatric clinics. We have seen people from prominent families who are of no help even to themselves, much less to anyone else.
The fundamental question for a person is what he is and how he will come into communion with Christ. Whatever he may achieve in the world, he will remain empty. He will always feel that something is missing; he will remain dissatisfied, as we say. Approach such people, if you are not among them yourselves, and you will see that although they possess every material good, they have no peace within. There is no peace in their homes, no meaning in their work—nothing. Every day they run about seeking satisfaction, yet they remain dissatisfied. Our Church—whether you believe it or not—has the Holy Spirit. And every Sunday, and on every appropriate feast, she brings forth for her children the particular passage that can...
be taken into the heart and help a person. Today, those Orthodox Christians who attended church will have noticed that the Church placed before us a chief tax collector named Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus. Of course, the subject was discussed, the passage was read, and Zacchaeus returned to Christ. Yes—but did you examine more deeply who Zacchaeus was? Did you examine more deeply the disposition of Zacchaeus? Did you examine more deeply how many obstacles he had that could have kept him from going to Christ, and yet he went? Do you understand? This is the matter that ought to hold a person’s attention
and compel him to take heed, because the passages placed before us are not chosen casually or at random, merely to fill some portion of time in the life of the Church. They have a purpose. Fifteen days ago, the Church presented ten lepers who had leprosy in their bodies, and He who came to heal leprosy made them well. Now she presents another man who has leprosy in his soul, and through a single encounter he too is healed by Christ. Perhaps these things pass unnoticed. Since this talk has been permitted to take place here on Sundays, I say that tonight we should make good use of the opportunity and look at this passage...
more broadly, with a somewhat different eye. Before me I have the text of Luke, chapter nineteen, verse one and following. It presents our Christ passing through Jericho. Jericho was a great city, at least in the days of our Christ. It was second only to Jerusalem. Joshua, above all, and Elisha are figures with an important history connected with Jericho. Jericho still exists today. Indeed, if you go there, you will now see mud-brick houses all around it
—very many of them—after Arabs were driven out when the Jews came down into the region in recent times. The text says: “Christ entered Jericho and was passing through it. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich, and he sought to see who Jesus was. But he could not because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.” Zacchaeus, the rich chief tax collector, sought to see whom? Jesus. And who was Jesus? The son of Mary and of Joseph, for example, as He appeared to people then. Who was He? And you are Zacchaeus—a name meaning pure, a name meaning dove, a name people would envy...
You are a chief tax collector, feared by everyone; whether they want to or not, they take off their hats before you. You are rich and have need of no one. What business do you now have with this man, whom they called a deceiver? What business is it of yours? Why do you not remain at home, preserving your dignity and attending to your work? Yet the Gospel says that he sought to see Jesus. He sought; he desired. Christ also desired. Very well: you wish to see Me, and I wish to see you. God always desires this—know it well. There is no day and no moment when God does not desire to meet His creature. Nor is there any obstacle, any kind or measure of sin, that makes things difficult for God or causes Him no longer to desire us. He always desires us.
He does not dismiss His creature, whatever condition that creature may be in; He does not merely measure him—He weighs him. A Christian is not measured; he is weighed. A Christian has a particular spiritual weight. A Christian is something different. A person united with God is something different and differs greatly from other people. He is weighed by another standard. For precisely this reason, we must know that never, ever, whatever condition we may be in, has God become lost to us, as we sometimes say, or ceased to want us. Perhaps—I dare to say—when I am more deeply in debt to sin and more gravely ill in soul, He then feels greater compassion for us, takes greater care for us, and acts even more to help us escape from the state in which we find ourselves. For Satan will try to drive us to despair...
When Satan gets us into his grasp and brings us to despair, persuading us that nothing remains for us and that everything is over, a person may reach the point of suicide. Many, under this influence, reach the conclusion that nothing remains and that it is the end. Then they suffer that terrible, irreparable, and incurable loss. The one who takes his own life cannot afterward be healed. He has closed the doors, locked them, and taken the keys with him; no one can approach him, and no one can help him. In any event, Zacchaeus has three titles, a kind of threefold distinction: he has a fine name, he is rich, and he holds an important position. He lacks nothing. After all, if we examine it, this is what the world seeks today: to succeed, to become accomplished, and to become educated,
to become someone with financial freedom. This is what people seek. When they attain it, they think they have found happiness. Zacchaeus had all this, but he had not found happiness. He was seeking something for which others might have mocked him. Indeed, in what he did afterward he behaved with such childlike simplicity that he could have become the talk of the day, even appearing in the papers of Jericho, so to speak. Imagine seeing a chief tax collector, a prominent official, sitting in a sycamore tree among the children or the other carefree folk who usually occupy themselves with such things. God, then, desired it, and now Zacchaeus desired it too. Wherever these two wills meet, the salvation of the human person begins. Salvation cannot come through only one will.
If the human person desires it, God must desire it as well. And when God desires it, the human person must also choose it. Where these two wills meet, the salvation of the human person unfolds. Remember our Most Holy Theotokos. How long did the angel remain there until the Most Holy Theotokos said yes? When she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord,” the matter was accomplished. The angel departed, and she, now bearing God within her womb, hastened to the hill country to meet Elizabeth and see whether what she had discussed with the angel was indeed true. A person cannot be saved by himself, nor does God save a person without that person’s willing response. He always asks for our “I will”: “Do you want to be made well?” “Do you believe that I can do this?” “If you wish, come after Me.” “Whoever wills.”
As soon as a person wills it, the conditions are created for the whole power of the grace of the Holy Spirit to be set in motion: to illumine the person properly and lead him to metanoia, to repentance; to help him make his confession; to cleanse him; and then to sanctify him. No one who refuses to will it should expect God to save him by force. God respects his free will, so that He may also justly judge him tomorrow. “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” The One who made you without asking you does not save you without asking you. He desires your consent, and He enters to the extent that we permit Him. “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You.” If some people make progress in Christianity, it is because they have opened themselves more fully to Christ.
They loved more, and for that reason they were loved more. Many even accuse Christ of showing partiality toward John the Theologian by calling him the beloved disciple. Why was he beloved more than the others? Because he loved more. That is the reason. He offered Christ more ground within himself. He struggled more, humbled himself more, and received more. The more you give, the more you will receive. The larger and cleaner the vessel you present, the more you will receive. Christ is an inexhaustible grace, able to embrace everyone. Yet if some of us do not receive and do not possess the grace we ought to have, it is because we ourselves have failed to attend to these details. In any event, Zacchaeus felt a void and wanted at least to see Him—even if he could not approach Him, speak with Him, or touch Him as one might touch a holy person.
He wanted at least to see Him from afar. When this desire stirred within him, Christ perceived it. Do you remember what He said to Nathanael? “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Before you met Philip and he told you, “We have found the Messiah,” Christ says, “I saw you beneath a fig tree.” Nathanael was evidently praying there, and when he prayed, where did his prayer go? It went to God, to Christ. But because Christ was then on earth, it went there, and what rose from Nathanael’s heart was made known to Him. Something similar happens in this case. From the moment this man’s desire was born, Christ began creating the conditions for their meeting. It was not a chance event. We speak of coincidence and chance...
Was it by chance that our Christ went to Jacob’s well and the Samaritan woman came there at midday, after having had six men in her life? It was not by chance. Only God arranges such appointments. Was it by chance that He seized Paul outside Damascus? A coincidence? No. He was sent and laid hold of him. Only God brings about these appointments, these encounters. It is enough for Him to see that the person desires Him. Let that person be in delusion; let him be burdened with sins—this does not trouble God. Only let him retain the fear of God somewhere within himself, leaving some small opening, and let him say, “Yes, perhaps it is nothing; but if there is something, I would like to know what that something is.” Then you free God’s hands, and He acts in a mysterious way, so that afterward, when you think about it...
your eyes fill with tears. When you think of it, your knees give way. “My God, You continued to think of me... You pursued me for so many years in order to catch me.” David says this beforehand: “Your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life.” Do not leave me. I may run away like a goat into sin, but You run after me and catch me. And many of us—I above all—have wearied Christ by making Him pursue us for so long. He walked for many years and wore out many pairs of shoes.
I know it. I did not understand how things truly were. Yet even if He had made them known to me sooner, I would not have been able to grasp them. I could not comprehend them. I had nowhere within myself to receive them. For this reason many people often become discouraged because they do not understand. No—you do not know when each person’s hour will come. He knows. Only tell that person to leave a tiny opening.
He must not close everything off. Yes, perhaps there is nothing. But what if there is? Yes, perhaps everything came about automatically. But if it did not, leave a little opening. And when you leave a little opening, God will find the right moment to enter. Christ created this opportunity for Zacchaeus. Christ came to save the lost, and now He sees Zacchaeus as one of the lost and creates the conditions for him. Here is the proof. Some say, “Zacchaeus went on his own, ran ahead, and climbed the sycamore tree.” Agreed. But if Christ had simply passed beneath him with His entourage—with the crowds following Him, some out of curiosity, some hoping to catch Him in His words, and others seeking to be healed—and had not stopped and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must remain in your house,” would salvation have come about? No. Would they have spoken? No. Would his metanoia, his repentance, and his desire have been brought to fulfillment? No.
He would merely have seen Christ with his own eyes—whether He was tall or short, fair-haired, or whatever He looked like. Then one would have gone about his business, and the other about his own. But salvation would not have taken place. So Christ, by stopping there, made use of Zacchaeus’s effort. For when a person takes one step, Christ takes nine hundred and ninety-nine. Remember the scene of the Prodigal Son: “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him, had compassion on him, and ran.” The elder runs, takes hold of him, and covers him with kisses. The man makes one effort, and God supplies the other nine hundred and ninety-nine steps and comes to meet him. God waits for each person, watching for the slightest stir, the smallest movement of the will. Then He is ready to help him, to increase what he has begun, to give to him, to bring him to fulfillment, and to save him. Christ willed it, and Zacchaeus also willed it; and where those two acts of will were united...
...this man’s salvation sprang forth. In any case, as I was saying, neither his name, nor his money, nor his position could keep him satisfied. A human being cannot be satisfied by these things. He feels an emptiness within. Give him drink in vessels of gold—it makes no difference. He remains unsatisfied. The other day, when I was speaking about ingratitude, I said that we see a small example of this in our parents. We place them inside those little golden cages called homes for the elderly. “You will have a doctor, you will have food, you will have this, and you will have that.” Yet neither the old man’s heart nor the old woman’s heart is filled. The grandmother wants her grandchild. She wants to hold her child in her arms in the evening, to exchange a few words, or to caress her little granddaughter.
Let her eat nothing at all. She finds joy and fulfillment in her child’s child, even if she has nothing else. We try to fill her life with golden things, but the human heart is not filled that way. Perhaps you know this from your own experience. In any case, Zacchaeus would not normally have gone ahead like that. But he did; he set out. Did he find a clear road? No. What did he find before him? A crowd, people, noise, and commotion. What did they do? They made it difficult for him to see Christ or draw near to Him. Tell me, then: what is the world? Where have you placed the world—among the friends of your salvation, or among its enemies? The world is an enemy. Christ tells us, “Beware of men,” and, “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” He did not say, “Beware of lions,” or, “Beware of wild beasts.” He said, “Beware of men.”
A person who does not live as a Christian can become worse than a wild beast. When the right circumstances arise, he acts in ways that afterward he himself is ashamed to look upon, as are those who once regarded him as an exceptional man. He did not have the brake called Christ to restrain him in a difficult moment—in his anger, his flesh, his desires, and his self-interest. When Christ is absent, you will see insane things; indeed, we see them every day. One man, an educated man, stabbed his girlfriend twenty-seven times; and then there were those musicians down in Achladokampos. Would a wild beast do such a thing? No. Another educated man, a student with two or three diplomas, threw his girlfriend, herself holding two diplomas, out of a window. Do wild beasts do such things? No. Yet he did it, though he is a human being and wants to be called superior. This is what happens wherever Christ is absent...
...Christ, who puts things in their proper order, assigns them their true value, and shows a person the right path. In any case, the world belongs among the wild beasts, the obstacles, and the enemies of the human soul. It is the second enemy. The first is the flesh. A person’s flesh is an enemy. The world is enemy number two, and after that come self-interest and the devil—these are the enemies. The world differs from the flesh. You cannot cast off the flesh or shut it outside. Wherever you go, you must take it with you, and it will cry out and demand what it wants. But you can shut out the world. You can close the door on it, put down the telephone, turn your back on it, and avoid it. Yet it remains a great beast, and especially today it has become active and acts independently.
The great beast is the world. People today do not fear God; they fear other people. Whatever they have become, they have become because they are afraid of men. Above all, they are concerned with receiving the world’s certificate of approval: they do not want to be left behind; they want to conform to the world and to be regarded by it as civilized people...
...as people who are, I do not know, progressive. They agree with whatever the world demands. And you know what the world demands today and whom it calls progressive. For example, if you have a car, you are progressive—even if you are in debt for it. If you have a television, you are modern—even if you still owe the money for these things. And that money may belong to someone who is suffering, to a shepherd, to a widow, or to an orphan.
Do you have the right to do that? At every moment, it is the Christian who lays hold of what is real. We are speaking about human beings, but a human being and a Christian are not the same thing; they are two distinct things. A good person and a Christian are also not the same thing. The responsibility is not small; it is great, and God will require an account. Why has the woman today become like a man? Because she fears the world and will not put on what is proper; she has shut the Most Holy Theotokos outside. Why has the son become like a woman today? For the same reason. Why does the woman avoid having children today? How could she show herself in public? The world will judge her; everyone is against her. The world is a great beast. Blessed is the person who can defeat it or go around it. Zacchaeus could not defeat it. He did not put his chest against the crowd to push it aside and go straight to Christ; he went around it.
He left the crowd and took another way. He rose above it, rising to the demands of the moment, and from that height he found his salvation. But a person must truly desire this. He must carry it within and set himself firmly against every obstacle, as a man in love does, or a thief, or a king. Then he brings about circumstances that afterward make you rub your eyes and ask, “How did he manage it? How did it happen?” It takes that determination to attain the goal. But we do not have this determination, this persistence, as we might call it. At the slightest obstacle, we step aside. “You see, we live in the world. You see how things are.” You know people who remove fasting from their homes—on Wednesdays, Fridays, and during Great Lent—because guests are coming to visit. “Out with Christ, out with the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), out with fasting; we are receiving guests! After all, we live in the world.” The world is a great beast, and a person must go around it.
Many who cannot overcome this world go around it: they flee into the deserts or go somewhere far away, so that they may escape it. Why? Because they recognize it as their enemy—and it is an enemy. The world does not offer a person things that lead to salvation. For the most part, it offers things that lead to destruction, and whoever makes peace with the world will perish together with it. This is what we have seen so far. In any case, let us continue and return to this man. The text says, “And he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was about to pass that way.” He calculated: “He is going this way, and He will come out over there.” So Zacchaeus ran there. Think for a moment: which of us would do this? Which of us would disregard the world in such a situation? For this...
...chief tax collector was a prominent person: first of all, a well-fed man, well dressed in his silks and fine hats. He had money, position, and importance. Could such a man now run like a child through the narrow streets and then scramble up a tree, as we did when we were little, climbing up to reach the nests? Could a man like that do such things? He was a respectable man. Yet a person becomes foolish when Christ is at stake. This is why those who follow Him are all called mad. “That man is mad! Are you going to listen to him?” The world does not understand. Christianity is a kind of madness; a person becomes mad for Christ. But I pray that all of us may have the madness of Zacchaeus. It is a saving madness. There is a madness that leads to destruction, and there is also a madness that leads to salvation.
I say, may we all possess this kind of madness. Can you picture this man? First, he must have run as fast as he could so that the procession coming along the main road would not overtake him. I do not know whether you have been there, whether you have been counted worthy to visit the Holy Land and Jericho, where the sycamore tree stands, for it remains there to this day. Of course, it no longer flourishes or lives; it has dried up. But they have covered it with sheets of metal and fiber cement so that it will not rot and disappear altogether. The whole trunk remains. In fact, one evening I showed it to those of you who were here with us.
What can I tell you? When you see that place and imagine that this man climbed up here, onto this very branch, you will say, “My God!” He had to climb high enough to reach the fork of the tree and hide within the foliage. Surely he was not simply clinging there, hanging out in the open. He must have gone into the leaves so that he could see Christ without being seen himself. Psychologically and humanly speaking, that is how I imagine he acted. To understand it, you must reach the very thought I am describing and see it before you. So he climbed up, and the text says, “When He came to the place...” Christ was seeking him, for He came “to seek and to save the lost,” and Zacchaeus, in this instance, was one of the lost sheep. Looking up, Christ now saw him even with His bodily eyes and said to him by name, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down.”
Did Zacchaeus have a sign on him? No. Then how did Christ know his name? Because He is also God. How did He know that a man was hidden up there among the leaves? Because He is God. He is not only the son of Mary; He is also the Son of God. “For today I must remain in your house.” “But Teacher, Rabbi, are You really coming to my house? I only wanted to see You!” “You asked for that much, but I will give you this much. It is enough that you asked; it is enough that you set out. I will provide everything else.” Indeed, many of us could speak from personal experience: we asked Christ for very little, and He gave us so much that afterward we felt ashamed.
Afterward we felt ashamed. He gave us so much. He gives because He is rich, open-handed, generous, and magnanimous. Christ is not stingy; Christ is not poor. If some have not received, it is because they themselves were miserly and did not open themselves. They did not open, though He gives to a person in abundance and truly overwhelms him. Here, then, Christ reveals His divinity. He stops and addresses Zacchaeus by his first name: “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down.” Come down quickly. I have descended to your earth, and I am seeking you here upon the earth. I am not in Heaven, nor am I between Heaven and earth. Tomorrow I shall be crucified between Heaven and earth so that I may unite you with the Father and then return. But now, come down here. And not only that.
“I must remain there. For today I must remain in your house.” I must stay in your home. Who offers his home to Christ so that he may behold Christ’s miracles? We do not. And a person has two homes to offer Christ: a material home and a spiritual home. Most homes today are closed to Christ. Christ has been driven out, or perhaps He is merely a decorative figure—an icon set off in a corner, in some little shrine. It may be an icon of Him, of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), His mother, or of some miracle-working Saint whom we need. But only for a few things. And you know this. When circumstances become difficult, we cry, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me! My Christ, help me! Saint...” But when things are not difficult, it is another matter. I shook my head when I read about a man whose relative was...
...in the hospital. He kept visiting a bookstore and asking for religious books to take to him. “Do you have anything for the hour of pain? Anything about illness? Do you have something?” and so forth. The bookseller gave him suitable books. One day the man came in, and as soon as he entered, the bookseller assumed that he would ask for more books. He asked him, “How is your patient doing?” The man replied, “He is better.” “Then surely you will not want a religious book today.” “No,” he said, “I will take him something else.” Religious books were useful while the patient was doing badly. Now he was better, so what need was there for religious books? He should read something more suitable—something amusing, something lighthearted. Would a man who was recovering read religious books? Unthinkable! Examine yourselves and you will see that I am right. I am not a medium, nor can I read people’s hearts. I know this from personal experience.
When things are going badly, we are down on our knees. But let them improve a little, and we rise and often say, “Out, Lord Jesus Christ! We do not want You.” When they need You again, they will call both upon You and upon the Most Holy Theotokos, Your mother. And yet He still puts up with us. He could shake this filthy dish of a world and turn it over, so that we would cease to exist altogether. Yet He still endures us. And we imagine that our life comes from our own heart, that we deserve to possess it, to live, to act, and to enjoy ourselves. In any case, how did Zacchaeus feel now? He had gone there secretly, and Christ exposed him—not only to himself, but before the eyes of all the people. Down below were children, women, gentlemen, and men, all exclaiming, “Zacchaeus!” So it really was him. Now the poor man had to come down, like a fox emerging while its eyes gleam at the sight of a hen. That was how he had to descend after Christ did this to him.
Imagine it—we would never have climbed up there in the first place, for fear of what might happen to us at work! In any case, the result was that Zacchaeus came down: “He made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully” into his house. “I must remain in your house.” But how did he come down? Did he call, “Bring me a ladder”? How did he descend? Surely he wrapped his arms around the tree, slid down, and reached the ground. Whether he tore his silk clothes or ripped something else as he came down, I do not know. At that moment, I believe, he cared nothing about such things. Consider what happened when he found himself face-to-face—not with me, but with God. God radiates divine power. His words carry weight: they hold you fast, convict you, and pierce through you. You understand the state Zacchaeus was in. Did he remember to take his cape or his overcoat? Did he remember to retrieve his hat? I do not know.
In any case, the two of them set out for the house, and it says here that Christ entered the house and Zacchaeus received Him with joy. What had he asked for? To see Him. And what does Christ give him? A visit to his home. He gives him the opportunity to see Him up close, to put his questions to Him, and to receive His answers; the opportunity to eat together at the same table, to drink from the same carafe, for Christ to caress his children, if he has any, and for his wife to greet Him with a handshake: “This way, this way, Teacher, Rabbi,” and so on. You understand what was happening here. And now consider this: Christ enters the house and blesses that table. The room was shut; the house remained closed, and the door was closed. Inside were a beast of this world and the Lamb of God—a lamb destined for slaughter and a beast.
The door opened, and they went in. After a little while—though the Evangelist does not tell us what they discussed, what Zacchaeus asked Him, what answer he received, or how Christ ultimately brought him to the point of saying what we read in the announcement—a joint announcement came out of that encounter. It reads as follows:
“Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.’ That was the communiqué. The result of this encounter with Christ was that, within a very short time, this rich man became poor. What, then, do we discern here?
Repentance.
Repentance put into practice. We repent without making amends for the injustices we have committed, what we have stolen, the wrongs we have done, the words we have spoken, the bitterness we have laid upon others, and so on—and we think everything has been put right. This is the repentance a person needs: yes, to encounter Christ, but also to put repentance into practice...
He will prove that he believes what Christ told him. When the door closed, some remained outside. “When they all saw it”—Pharisees, scribes, and various others who were nearby—“they murmured, saying, ‘He has gone in to stay with a man who is a sinner.’” What unanimity! Even today, there are people who believe that Christ has dealings with the saints, not with sinners. Yes, he is holy—but does Christ say that he came for the saints? He came for sinners. “I did not come,” he says, “to call the righteous, but sinners to metanoia, to repentance.” It is not the healthy who need a physician; it is the sick. Why are you scandalized? He is God. To you, blind Pharisee, is this chief tax collector not an open wound? Is he not someone who drains your blood legally? They have managed to do it through the law—the law...
He drains your lifeblood and fears nothing. So let the One whom you hear works so many miracles have the opportunity to transform him, to make him a different man—as indeed He did. The beast that went inside later emerges as a sheep. It gives meat, wool, milk—it gives everything. This beast that used to devour others is now itself consumed; it now gives itself and is spent for others. Who brought about this change? That great Physician. He is not the sinner; He is the One who came to deal with sin. And this is how we too must always keep Christ before us throughout our journey and throughout this life.
In any case, the result was that this man made restitution—and far beyond what justice required. The requirement was twofold restitution, but he made it fourfold.
He could give away his wealth, and he did: he gave away half of all he possessed. In other words, within a few minutes he became poor. Yet he became rich in Christ. That is the point. Many of us, because we do not want to become poor in worldly terms, because we do not want to lose the world, our reputation, our circle of friends, our savings—some of them unjustly gained—and all our achievements and possessions, push Christ aside. Know this, my friend: Christ costs something. Christ costs something. Do not expect a painless Christ. Christ will cost you in the flesh; He will cost you the world, your ego, your self-interest—Christ will cost you everything. But He is the One who promises us another life. This world promises us nothing. Christ promises life even beyond this world, beyond the grave.
In this world, many people find peace and tranquility. At last they sleep soundly, without nightmares; they are no longer in danger, and the life to come is assured for them. Why, then, were the people murmuring? Why did Christ go to him? He went because he was the one who was sick. Is it so remarkable for a doctor to visit a sick person? If you see a doctor going to someone with cancer, or to someone else suffering from some serious illness, that is his calling. But these people did not receive Christ in this way—as the physician, as the Savior who came to seek what was lost. That is precisely why they murmured. The world does not want this. When it sees a person coming into contact with Christ, it becomes hostile. It sees things differently and tries to stand in your way. Pay no attention to the world; pay no attention to it. I tell you, the door opened once again, and in a mysterious way this man was changed.
He became a different man. As I told you, from a wild beast he became a sheep. Where once he consumed and devoured others, today he lets himself be consumed: he gives back what he took and makes restitution. Examine your accounts with the world and with God, and make sure you settle them now. Do not put off setting these matters right. If you have wronged anyone, make sure you also return what you owe. These are among the few things that are never forgotten, among the few bonds from which a person cannot be released even in Hades—not even by death. If, for example, I die and rise again, my wife is no longer my wife, and I am no longer her husband. Death has dissolved the marriage, as Paul says.
If I have caused someone loss, stolen from someone, or wronged someone—if I am withholding what belongs to him, whether it is a plot of land, an apartment, or anything else—even if I die and rise again, I am still in debt. I am obliged to repay it. You may have heard—I do not know whether it is true—that there is a law concerning workers’ wages: no matter how much time passes or what happens, such debts never expire. Whatever is owed to the worker is the fruit of his sweat, because he worked for you...
If I do not repay it here, I will repay it in the next life.
And so on. Think how profound the things of God are. Many of us are reproved by our conscience, not only after hearing such things, but even without hearing them, because the conscience speaks on God’s behalf: it lights a little red warning light within us and reminds us. But if we cover it over, wanting to see only the green lights and refusing to see the red ones as well...
When your conscience reminds you of something, do not brush it aside. Face it and speak to God about it. You may say, “But after all that has happened, I cannot put it right in the same way.” Then ask God. I do not know—ask God: “I have done this and that, and I acknowledge it because of what You have brought back to my remembrance—through something I heard, something I read, or something I saw in a dream.” Even our nightmares sometimes remind us of these things. Ask Him, “Tell me what I should do. How can I put this right? After what has happened, I cannot resolve it now as I once could.” He will show you a way. Take the matter in hand; look into it. Do not brush it aside. Speak about it, include it in your prayer, and ask others to pray for your difficult situation as well, because you must not drag other people down with you. Justice must be done here, and a person’s metanoia—his repentance—must include setting things right according to God’s justice. Amends must be made in kind. Did you steal? Give back what you stole.
Have you wronged someone? Make amends. Have you cursed? Bless instead. Do the exact opposite, so that you can close the wound. Do you remember what Christ did with Peter at a meal before the Ascension? He asked him, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” Peter said, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” “Shepherd My sheep.” A second time He asked, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” “Lord, You know that I love You.” “Shepherd My lambs.” A third time He asked, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” Peter became upset: I have already said it once, twice. But why do you resist, Peter? Did you open only two wounds by your denial? Did you not open three? How could you close only two? Did you not deny Me three times? Then you will confess Me three times—and I am doing this for your own good.”
“I am leaving tomorrow. What will become of the wound you opened through your three denials?” Thank you. Three professions of faith were needed to close the three doors opened by those denials. So this matter of making amends in kind is very important. It puts a person in his proper place. We are egotists: we cause harm, and then we go to Confession. Yes—but what about the harm you caused, the person you wronged, the person you accused, the person whose reputation you destroyed? Do you understand? You will have to answer for that. In this respect, you are a murderer. How many of us have dragged another man’s family, his wife, or his daughter through the mud? How many of us have morally put people to death? Consider an incident told about Saint Ephraim the Syrian. Once, while Saint Ephraim was traveling to Alexandria, night fell before he could enter the city, so he stayed outside it at the sheepfold of an acquaintance. During the night, thieves came and robbed that shepherd.
When the police took up the case, they accused the Saint of having gone there as part of a plan: that he had conspired with others and had gone to distract the shepherd, and so on, so that they could steal from him. So the Saint was put in prison, though he had done nothing at all. Once inside, he found two other men there. They too were embittered, not so much because they were in prison, but because they had been unjustly convicted. “What did you do, Father?” “The Lord knows, my children—nothing.” “It does not happen like that,” one of them said. “You must have done something.” “Nothing.” “But is God unjust? Are you not a monk?” “Yes,” he said. “And you are still content to remain a monk? God allowed you to be wronged and thrown in here, and you are still a monk?” “What can we do, my children?” he said. What could he do? The very thing that we ourselves would think of doing.
You are tempted to blaspheme Him, because we are here unjustly. But how are you here unjustly? He now listens to each man’s story. “I have been convicted of a murder I did not commit, this man has been convicted of a murder he did not commit, and now you have been convicted of a theft you did not commit. Where is God, and where is His justice?” Fine words—understandable, plausible, reasonable. The elder was stunned. What could he say? In any case, as we said, this was his first night there. How could he possibly sleep? He began to pray, asking Christ to reveal to him what was happening. What was the truth of the matter? “All right, am I a monk, or am I a worthless wretch? If this is what God wills, let them do it to me; let them tear me to pieces. But why should these other people, the ordinary faithful, be scandalized? Why does He permit this injustice?” So, as he was speaking with our Lord and was somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, he was visited by an imposing gentleman, who asked him, “What are you doing here, elder?” He sprang up. “What am I doing?” he replied. “Can’t you see?”
“What are you praying for?” “I am praying to the Lord,” he said, “to explain to me this injustice that has happened here.” “What injustice?” “I am accused of being a thief,” he said, “while these two men are both accused of murder. What are we being made to pay for, and why? I believe these men have been falsely accused.” “Listen,” the visitor told him, “do not be mistaken. God is just. That first man,” he said, “the one sleeping in this little bed here”—the men were asleep and had no idea what was happening to the elder—“once went with another man to cut wood by the river. The other man slipped and cried out to him, ‘Run farther downstream and catch me!’ But this man paid no attention. The other man drowned, and he bears the guilt for that death.” The elder was stunned when he began hearing such strange things. “The other man,” the visitor continued, “the one sleeping farther down by the door...”
“He had a quarrel,” the man said, “with a prominent person in his village, a powerful man. Since he could not overpower him physically, strike him, confront him, or do anything else to him, he accused the man’s daughter of being immoral. In God’s sight, this is considered a kind of moral murder, and that is what he is now paying for. This, too, is taken into account before God and by God’s justice. And you, when you were a boy of ten or eleven, were playing and went and let a woman’s young cow loose, and she lost it. The butchers took it and slaughtered it, and to this day the woman still mourns for that cow. That is what you are paying for now,” he told him. “Well, yes, I did it—but is that really the issue?” he asked.
He said, “I sold everything I had, gave it away, and distributed it to the poor. Do I still owe her for that heifer?” “What you gave away,” the man told him, “you gave as alms. But that was a debt, and you have not repaid it.” How many people use stolen money to make chandeliers for churches? How many use stolen money to commission icons? How many use stolen money to provide dowries for orphans, and so on? Such things are not counted as repayment, no matter how much they may give.
God sees things differently—very differently—and we must pay close attention to this. Through even a single encounter with Christ, a person’s nature is changed, but the person must desire it. He sets aside his ego, his position, and the world, and begins to think with Christ. Everything changes at once. How it changes, I do not know; nor do I know how these changes take place. If you ask me how I can hate today the things I loved yesterday...
...and how I can love today the things I hated yesterday, I cannot answer you. I know what happened, but I cannot tell you how it happened. It is a mystery. This is precisely why, in the account, a kind of bracket closes when Christ enters the house with Zacchaeus. Then another bracket opens and tells us what happened afterward, but it does not tell us what passed between them. How did this man’s transformation take place? Why does the Gospel not tell us? Did the one writing through the Holy Spirit not know? Luke was not present when these events took place; he wrote through the Holy Spirit. Why, then, does he not record this detail as well? What words passed between the Lord and Zacchaeus? We would like to know how it happened. But do not ask how it happened. The transformation of a human being is a mystery. A person does not know how it takes place. Our Church has some words that express this, and you will remember them too.
“The soul is given life, purified, raised up, and made radiant as the Triune Unity performs the sacred work within it.” A person’s nature is changed as this sacred work is performed within him. How? You do not know how your hair grows, or how you yourself grow until you reach a certain height; after that, even if they pull and stretch you, you will grow no taller. And Christ says, “Which of you can add one cubit to his stature?” My friend, can you add even that much to your height? You cannot. Your growth reaches the point appointed for it. These are mysterious things. We know that they happen, but no human being knows how they happen. So do not ask how this transformation will take place. Do not ask. Only run to meet Christ and entrust yourself to Him. Give Him the whole file; do not take certain things out and keep them for yourself. Say to Him, “Take me into Your care.”
“What will You prescribe? Surgery? Then surgery. A bandage? Then a bandage. What will You prescribe? That I become poor? Then let me become poor. What will You prescribe? I want only to be saved. I want to be saved.” But a person does not cry out like this. He seeks Christ as a helper in his needs, as I said earlier. He seeks Christ in his hardships and fears. Yes, he seeks Him. But if Christ points out a painful path, so to speak, we are not prepared to follow it. Yet if a surgeon tells us, “You must undergo a severe operation, and even then recovery is not certain—there are only probabilities,” and asks us to sign a consent form, we sign it. Why, then, do we not sign ourselves over to Christ, this great Surgeon?
For He assures you beforehand that the treatment will be painful to your ego and painful in the eyes of your world, but it will bring salvation to your soul. Why? My beloved, if we are lost, we will be lost because we ourselves choose it, not because God desires it. Every day He creates many opportunities for us, and blessed is the person who chooses to make use of them. Through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Mother of the Lord, and of all the Saints, I pray that even some small spiritual benefit may come from what we have said this evening.

«Σταθείς δε Ζακχαίος είπε προς τον Κύριον· ιδού, τα ημίση των υπαρχόντων μου, Κύριε, δίδωμι τοις πτωχοίς, και ει τινός τι εσυκοφάντησα, αποδίδωμι τετραπλούν». Αυτό ήταν το ανακοινωθέν. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της συναντήσεως με τον Χριστό ήταν να γίνει φτωχός σε λίγη ώρα ο πλούσιος αυτός. Τι δηλαδή διακρίνουμε εδώ;
Τι θα διατάξεις; Εγχείρηση; Εγχείρηση. Έμπλαστρο; Έμπλαστρο. Τι θα διατάξεις; Να γίνω φτωχός; Να γίνω φτωχός. Τι θα διατάξεις; Να σωθώ θέλω μόνο. Να σωθώ θέλω. Αυτό δεν το φωνάζει ο άνθρωπος. Ζητάει τον Χριστό βοηθό στις ανάγκες του, όπως είπα γρηγορότερα. Ζητάει τον Χριστό στις δεινότητές του και στους φόβους του. Τον ζητάει. Αλλά αν ο Χριστός υποδείξει έναν επώδυνο τρόπο, όπως θα λέγαμε, δεν είμαστε διατεθειμένοι να τον ακολουθήσουμε. Αν μας τον υποδείξει ο χειρουργός, ότι ξέρεις, θα γίνεις κομμάτια πάνω σε αυτό και με όχι βεβαία την αποθεραπεία, με ποσοστά, και σε βάνει να υπογράψεις, και το υπογράφει αυτό το πράγμα. Πώς δεν υπογράφει μπροστά σε αυτόν τον μεγάλο χειρουργό, τον Χριστό;
