Summary
The lecture identifies unbelievers as the first of three spiritual categories, describing them as people who reject the true God and the risen Christ while placing faith in human ideas or self-made gods. Believers share responsibility for warning others lovingly about sin, since Ezekiel teaches that silence makes the watchman accountable, while faithful admonition frees the watchman from guilt. The lecture calls Christians to repent not only for evil committed but also for good left undone, using their time, resources, prayer, and ingenuity to enlighten others and serve Christ’s mission.

In an earlier talk—not the last one, but the one before it—we said that Satan sets three traps for man. We tried to examine these thoughts so that we might understand, more or less, whether we are doing well or badly, whether we find ourselves outside the Church or within the Church.
Tonight, following roughly the same outline, I wanted to say a few other things, so that we might see where others—and we ourselves—stand. Broadly speaking, people fall into three categories. This is how Holy Scripture describes them, through the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Corinthians. There is a large class of people who eat, drink, breathe, move about, develop, think, and so forth, yet remain far from the Church. They are not interested; they do not want to know. These are the people we call unbelievers.
They do not believe. “There is nothing there. The priests invented all this. They have their reasons and their own interests.” That is their constant refrain. Others say, “Christianity is used to lull the people to sleep,” along with a thousand other ideas intended to silence their conscience and justify their position. Of course, none of this excuses or saves them. Something within them cries out that there is something beyond this life; in passing, they even admit that this “something” is acknowledged to exist even in the remotest depths of the earth. Yet for the time being they remain outside and continue making excuses.
There are also the many theories circulating today: that there is no soul, that there is no life to come, that Christ was merely an ordinary person—or even an imaginary person, as some claim—and so forth. In any case, this is a very large class of people, and perhaps, through these organized influences, their numbers are increasing and their unbelief is becoming more systematic. We see this even among our own children when they advance in their studies, leave secondary school for university, go away from home, and so on. If they have no foundation from their family, if they have not been watered and enlightened by the pure streams of the faith, they are in danger. And we know how parents today weep and lament.
They still retain some measure of faith and a little Christian sense of honor, and so they grieve and lament over what has become of their children. For most of what young people learn today is directed more against God than against themselves. This is a large category indeed. Now, who is responsible? Outside influences are also to blame, but chiefly responsible are those people themselves who were never spiritually inoculated, so that they might not succumb to the infection that exists outside. When there is an epidemic, steps are taken to vaccinate people. A doctor who has been vaccinated can face the disease without fear.
The newer forms of unbelief may escape me, but they should not have escaped us when the children were still in our care. We simply took them to Church; they even went into the altar and stole the priest’s antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy. But generally speaking, we ourselves were not as well instructed as we should have been. We did not create the proper conditions, and when the Church asked to catechize the children, we said that Christianity had been introduced long ago and was no longer needed today. Then, as soon as the young man went a little farther out into the world, he came back telling us, “Those things are your own foolish notions. You belong to the old school and know nothing. At school they tell me that the priests invented it all, that nothing exists,” and every other absurdity. And so, consider where we are being led.
We can prevent this situation. Otherwise, afterward we shall have to use powerful remedies to cure it, and prevention is preferable to treatment. As Basil the Great says, it is good not to become ill; but if one does become ill, it is also good to be healed. Today there is no shortage of remedies for unbelief. Yet unbelief goes hand in hand with the ego, and God does not crush the ego by force. The person himself must also desire healing. Great efforts are being made, and there is abundant light for those who are willing, just as for those who are unwilling even abundant light becomes the darkness of unbelief. Where the truth stands plainly before him, the egotistical man sees only darkness. That is why they call Christianity obscurantism. This, then, is one large category that Satan has succeeded in creating.
He keeps them far away. The first category is called unbelievers. Yet, strictly speaking, there are no true unbelievers. Everyone believes in something, but such a person believes in another god, one of his own making. When we say “unbeliever,” we mean someone who does not believe in or acknowledge the true God, who does not acknowledge the risen Christ, and who does not accept the fullness of the truth about Christ. That is what we mean by an unbeliever. Otherwise, if you examine whether a person believes or not, you will find that he does believe. He has fashioned human ideals and puts his faith in those human things. Nevertheless, this is a large class of people who live far away and do not believe in the true God. Such people are found both near our monasteries and out in the world, in our own neighborhoods. Something must be done for them; some effort must be made.
Are we not praying for those who have never been instructed in the pure streams of the faith? Should we not be doing this? We have not examined ourselves or the service we might offer. Perhaps God wishes to use us so that we may help those in unbelief, and perhaps we shall bear grave guilt if we fail. Responsibility will also fall upon those in positions of responsibility—teachers, those entrusted with abandoned people, and organizers—who failed to appear and act in such cases. Some may say, “I do not have the qualifications, the means, or the knowledge.” But books have been written, and you can help simply by offering someone a book that may enlighten the situation.
He may not take it directly from your hand, but let him receive it from his mother’s hand. She may be unable to present arguments to him, because he backs her into a corner. Yet she can read it, and the father can read it, and eventually a conversation will begin. The discussion may then continue among his friends and reach others as well. There are recorded talks; today well-instructed people write and speak, and their words reach others. Even a person with a rebellious will—whether catechized or wholly uninstructed—can be reached, for God says, “The word that goes forth from My mouth shall not return empty.” It will bring either salvation or condemnation. The word of God will certainly accomplish its work. If it does not bring salvation because the hearer refuses it, it will bring condemnation and reveal God’s justice: “Lord, I went to them, but they were unwilling.”
The word does its work. Yet we take no position toward unbelievers; we evade the matter, saying that we are unprepared and cannot speak even two words to them, though they are often people dear to us and affection itself makes us want to say something. Let each of us ask himself whether someone became—or remains—an unbeliever because of us, although that person could have become a believer and would otherwise have no excuse. Let us pay attention to this. “I cannot” is ridiculous; “I do not want to” is the truth. That is the reality. Many consider blessed those who are given the opportunity to hear. Others considered blessed those who were able to see Christ at close hand and witness miracles. But are miracles not before their eyes now? Does our Christ not work miracles today? Has Christ gone abroad and ceased to be among us?
And is His saying no longer true: “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”? Christ is with us. Does the Church not work miracles? Do the Saints not work miracles? Do the holy relics not work miracles? Do the icons not work miracles? Is this not evident? Recognize that there is something beyond what you can see. Faith is needed in order to see; faith is needed in order to hear.
You perceive these things through the other senses as well. The miracles have not ceased. And we, too, could help. One evening I mentioned something said by a lady with whom I was speaking.
Evangelization.
Softly, almost under her breath... I stepped down from the platform, turned around, and looked. I said, “Who kept saying those words while I was speaking?” She replied, “Did you hear them?” “Yes, I heard.” “I said them,” she told me. “And what did you say? Say it again clearly,” I answered. She was a very wealthy lady. She said, “If only your words had wings—but they have no wings.” I told her, “The wings are in your own hands; that is why the words have none. You can give them wings and make them reach the ends of the earth. Open your hands and you will see their wings.” We, too, can give them wings. We may not be able to give as much as she could. She could have given two, five, or ten million drachmas to produce thousands of recorded talks and thousands of books, so that the message might reach the world. One person might not listen, nor another, nor another—but if even one did, the will of God would still be done. I think Satan has lulled us to sleep; Satan has numbed us.
We make no move in any direction. “Am I supposed to manage everything? Am I supposed to do it?” Then who will do it? Will Christ come again for that purpose? Christ came once and shed His blood to the very last drop. Now He has left this work to us. We do have an obligation. Include this in your prayer and say to Him every morning: “What can I do today for Your glory? What can I do today in response to the blood You shed for us? What can I do so that You will not call me to judgment tomorrow?” Christ will judge us not only for the evil things we did, but also for every good thing we could have done and failed to do. What does James, the Brother of the Lord, say in his epistle? “To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” Those of us who go to Holy Confession must not confess only the ugly and evil deeds we committed,
but also the good we could have done and failed to do through our negligence. I believe—though perhaps I am mistaken—that the number of unbelievers would have been reduced if certain things had been prevented within the family and if those entrusted with this work had done what was required. I cannot simply rid myself of responsibility. I once had a Communist friend who later took his own life. I took out a coin and gave it to someone in need. “Go on,” he told me, “always giving money away.” “Why?” I asked. “What harm is there in that?” “Let him go to the Ministry,” he said, “to the department responsible for such things, and let them gather all these people up.” Do you understand? Christ said, “You always have the poor with you.” We should not want them removed from our sight merely so that we may sleep and eat in peace. That is ignorance.
In the second category there are people who remain outside through ignorance. It is not because of malice. They are ready to listen and to change their lives. Whenever possible, such enlightenment should be offered personally, one person at a time. Large public talks are also good, but people carry their questions and objections away with them. In a private conversation, when time is given to someone, many of these questions can be resolved. For all the doubts that remain within and all the places that have not been enlightened are like weeds: they drain away the life-giving moisture and prevent the plant
from yielding the fruit it ought to bear. This is why we have Christians who have practiced their religion for many years, yet have produced no results. Take note of that. The second category, then, is ignorance. And most of us also bear responsibility for that ignorance, because we have not acted. We wait for those officially appointed to enlighten the ignorant. We should not expect people to go to the physician; the physician must go to the people. We should not expect people to go and find Christ. The Apostles—those commissioned for the work—must go and find the people. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” He sent them out to go; He did not tell them to wait for people to come.
Yet everyone’s response is, “Where are they supposed to go?” Have you ever prayed that God would send missionaries of the faith? The Apostle says, “How will they hear, and how will they believe if they do not hear? And how will they preach unless they are sent?” Who will preach? Someone who is sent. Have I ever asked for this? I ask for the electric power network to be extended. I ask for the telephone line to be extended. I ask for the water supply to be extended so that I do not have to buy water from tankers. I ask for telephone service. I ask for a doctor and a clinic in my neighborhood. I do well to ask for all these things. But do we also ask God to send laborers into His vineyard?
Is this not our own duty? Has He not told us? Is it not written in the Gospel: “Pray to the Lord God to send forth laborers for the Gospel”? Who among us has ever prayed that God would raise up laborers in His Church? We do pray, and every day I receive telephone calls.
“Please, pray for a Katina; she is in need. Please, pray for a George; he is in need. A married couple is breaking apart; please, pray for them,” and so on. Yet no one has ever asked me to pray that God would send forth laborers into His vineyard. You may ask, “Is it wrong to pray for a married couple in need, or for someone undergoing surgery?” Of course it is good; I have no objection at all.
Thank you. But have we prayed that Christ would send forth laborers into His vineyard? Have we asked? We have not. Will He give them to us? “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find.” We have not asked because we do not care. When a person has no concern, there will always be excuses. Yet look how deeply concerned we are about every other issue. We pass laws, take to the streets, and organize campaigns over matters connected with our ego, our own interests, our flesh, and this temporary life. Why do we not care about that other life as well? To enlighten someone who remains outside through ignorance, we must use the same means I mentioned earlier for those who remain outside through unbelief.
It depends on us. Many matters remain hidden from people who are ignorant of the law of God, because they do not read. They read many other things. They know all the news and all the latest achievements, and they follow developments in every field; yet they remain ignorant of the timeless and noble truths of the faith.
They do not know the teaching of the Apostle, and this is their misfortune. We immediately fall over every stumbling block Satan sets before us. We find excuses to cover passions that have grown old within us and to become even more firmly rooted in them. But people are not enlightened about the matter as a whole: what the moral law truly requires and how we must live in relation to it.
Here we bear responsibility, and we bear it doubly, as the Saint says. If I did not know what to tell someone, that might be understandable. But if I know and still say nothing, that is hypocrisy and causes great harm. Christians know certain things about what those close to them are doing, yet out of a false politeness—“I do not want to offend him; I do not want to upset him”—we refuse to tell them the truth. You should know that we will have to give a fearful account for this. Many, as I said earlier, pass the message on in other ways, preparing something in writing perhaps, so that the person may at least have the teaching before him. And that is good.
People brush these things aside. Their conscience brings them to a certain point, but they find some answer to silence it, and so they disregard the voice of conscience. If you wish, write this down and read the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter three, from verse sixteen onward. Do you know what God says there? “When I say to the lawless man that he shall die in his lawlessness”—that is, he will be condemned. Everyone will die, both the righteous and the unrighteous. But he will be condemned because he acts lawlessly. “He shall die in his sin.”
But if you do not warn the lawless man,
“I will require his blood at your hand.” He is sinning, whether knowingly or through ignorance. Why do you not tell him that what he is doing is wrong? If things remain as they are, he will die in his sin, but you will answer for it: “I will require his blood at your hand.” Do you understand how deeply responsible we are for situations in which we could have spoken a word—not as dictators or prosecutors, but with warmth and familiarity, with entreaty, with tears if possible, pleading: “My brother, my daughter, my son, my husband, my father, this is how things stand. I am…”
“…obliged to remind you of it. From this point onward, the matter is yours; I am not forcing it upon you. But I see that what you are doing, what you have said, the way you behave, and the way you live are not right.” Pride often prevents people from answering, “Yes, thank you very much. I cannot change this at present, but I will attend to it. Thank you very much.” Pride does not let them say it. They see that what you are telling them is true, yet pride keeps them from saying yes or stopping immediately. Nevertheless, the word may bear fruit at the proper time. I have met people again after many years and learned what happened to them. I left them as wild beasts and found them as sheep. Without my knowing it, those people had turned back. I have heard them say:
“I owe you a great deal, Mr. Panagopoulos. We met fifteen years ago at Saint Andrew’s in Kato Patisia. I heard you there, and we clashed; I contradicted you from the audience. But afterward I discovered that your words were true.” And now you see a person who has abandoned the life he once led. I never returned there; I happened to meet him at the post office in Omonia. The word of God must be heard. That is the point. It has tremendous power. Sometimes, especially in the countryside, we hear that rocks have split and fallen away. If we investigate what caused a rock to break loose and tumble down, what do we find? Perhaps a wild olive tree
or some other tree had sprouted there, and as it grew, its roots slowly wore away the rock, split it, and brought it crashing down. Now tell me: who planted that wild olive tree up there? No one went and planted it. Perhaps a blackbird had eaten some olives down in the plain, then flew up there and dropped the stone. The olive stone was washed by the rain into a small crack. Wind and rain created the right conditions for it to open and sprout. As that stone took root and grew within the crack, it finally broke the rock and sent it tumbling down toward the shore. If an olive stone—a dry, weak little thing, a mere seed—
has such power and can produce such results, how much more can the word of God, the truth, accomplish? You tell someone the truth, but not as though driving in a nail, because the truth itself already pierces him. It is as though you prick him or touch him with the point of a spear. If you tell him a second truth, you prick him again; then a third and a fourth—with gracious words, reasonable words, the words of Christ. What will happen? What happened in the early Church: those who heard Peter speak were cut to the heart and said, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” You pierce, and pierce, and pierce, until katanyxis—compunction—comes. The heart is pierced spiritually, and the person finally surrenders.
How will this happen? As I have said, pride stands in the way. So let us be careful, and let us not expect to hear, “Yes, exactly! Well done! You are a great teacher; thank you,” and so forth. Show the person the good. If there is a truth you ought to tell him and an opportunity that makes it easier, tell him. God has His own way of setting the matter right, though we may fear that the other person will become angry. Speak with words seasoned with salt, so they are pleasant—not with pride or arrogance. Say, “This is how it seems to me, but consider it for yourself,” and leave it there. Such a word has power. “If you warn the lawless man, and he does not turn from his lawless way…”
Even if, as we say, he completely disregards everything you tell him, “he shall die in his sin”—he will be condemned—“but you have delivered your own soul.” This is the second outcome. First God says, “I will require his blood at your hand.” But now, because you spoke and persisted, “you have delivered your soul.” Thus I share responsibility for another person’s sin, and I will have to give an account for things I could never have imagined. I am not some isolated being with no connection to anything around me. Whatever you see around you—above you or below you—has a purpose. This stands here so that we may speak. That stands there so that we may lean upon it.
The walls protect us from the wind, enclose the room, and shelter the light; chairs are for sitting, floors for walking, water for drinking, matches for lighting a flame, a clock for telling the time, a glass for carrying water, a plate for covering food, paper for writing, and a pen for writing upon it. Everything has a purpose. Is the human person alone without a purpose? Are we not ashamed to think so? Are we an insignificant quantity? Are we nothing? Do we have no purpose here except to eat? Is that our purpose? When we return from the harvest, as the Psalmist says, we must be carrying something in our hands: “He shall come with rejoicing, bearing his sheaves.”
We will return from the harvest, and we must have something in our hands. Where are we going? Shall we go with empty hands? A parent will bring his children. A brother will bring someone else. A teacher will bring his pupils. A priest will bring the Christians entrusted to him. You must be holding something in your hand. Only souls can be carried beyond the grave. Solomon says, “He who saves souls is wise.” All the others are foolish and senseless. They may accumulate apartments and build skyscrapers; they may even travel to the moon, but they are foolish and senseless. The one who saves souls is wise, because souls alone can pass beyond the grave.
You hear people say, “I managed to make what was yours into mine.” But that amounts to nothing. What was yours became mine, yet it is neither mine nor yours. It belongs to Him. We are only stewards here, and we must understand this. We could do many things to enlighten another person’s ignorance. About fifteen years ago, I wrote a book that is still in circulation, entitled Avoiding Childbearing Is a Mortal Sin. Avoiding Childbearing Is a Mortal Sin. One Thursday evening, after I had spoken, I announced that, with God’s help, a book with that title had been published that very day. At that time, trams were still running in Athens.
There was a large audience. Among them was a senior police officer with his fiancée. When they heard that such a book had been published, they immediately thought of the wife of a police director they knew. She was pregnant and had arranged to have her child killed the next day. I was speaking from eight until nine. They bought the book. They knew that the director’s wife had an appointment the following morning to dispose of the child. But how could they place the book in her hands that very night? How could they knock on her door at such a late hour?
A Christian is always resourceful, and when he truly desires to help, Christ helps him. They took the book—and what a plan they devised! They rode the tram, got off near the house, and rang the intercom downstairs. Their only aim was to place the book in her hands, to enlighten her ignorance. This is what I want you to understand. A voice came from upstairs: “Hello, who is it?” “It is us. Good evening. We were passing by and thought we might wish you a good evening.” The lady answered through the intercom. “We would have been ashamed to pass by without at least greeting you through the intercom.” “Come upstairs. Come up for a moment.” “No, it is too late; we will not come up.” “Come, come.” She pressed the button upstairs, and they heard the door open.
They heard the upstairs door open. That was exactly what they wanted—to go up. For they had said, “My God, what can we do in this situation? How can we enlighten her?” And then, as we say, God provided the solution: that book appeared at precisely the right moment that evening. They seized the opportunity; they did not put it off until tomorrow or the next day. A Christian will sacrifice his night, his money, his labor, and even his health, if he understands what is at stake—what eternal life means and what a single soul is worth. They went upstairs, found the door open, and the lady welcomed them. The man was holding the book under a newspaper, and he set both down on a small table in the hallway. “We won’t stay,” they said. But in the end they sat for a moment, were offered a little something, and lingered briefly.
They spent two, three, four, perhaps five minutes there. “It is late; forgive us,” they said, and although their hosts did not want them to go, they left. After they had gone downstairs and perhaps already boarded the tram, the lady said, “Look, the children forgot their newspaper.” “All right,” her husband replied. “Put it aside so they can ask for it later.” She went to put it away, and the booklet appeared underneath. The newspaper had been covering the book. As she herself later related, when she saw the title, “Avoiding Childbearing Is a Mortal Sin,” she recoiled. She did not understand the plan—if we may call it a plan—or the device, the art, the method they had used. She did not yet realize that they had deliberately left it there. She knew that these young people were religious and attended sermons. Yet the title aroused her curiosity, because it concerned the very matter troubling her: she had an appointment the next morning to go and abort her child. But she did not pick up the book.
She left the newspaper over it and went to bed, but she could not sleep. She returned, uncovered the book, and looked at it again. She picked it up and carried it into the bedroom, but still did not open it. She sat on the bed for a long time without opening it, while her husband slept in his own bed. After a long while, she leafed through a page near the back. I do not know what she saw there, so I will not tell you something uncertain. She looked here and there. For two and a half hours she remained awake with the book in her hands, unwilling to begin reading it properly. At last, after two and a half hours, her resistance gave way. It was already around half past one or two in the morning. She read the entire book before dawn. When morning came, her eyes were swollen and bright red from weeping. But she did not go to kill her child.
That child became a fine sixteen-year-old boy named George. Divine providence certainly saved him, but so did the readiness, sacrifice, and love of one person. What could we not accomplish? What might we not prevent, and how much ignorance might we enlighten? I am telling you this and placing you face-to-face with Christ. Do whatever He illumines you to do. Have we ever seriously intervened and enlightened a situation, whether by word or by deed? This is why people remain in ignorance. Then one woman comes and tells you, “Yes, I have had sixteen abortions—but what about the other woman who has had twenty-two, Mr. Panagopoulos?” Do you understand? These are the excuses people repeat: “I know someone who does this, and I know someone else who does that.”
Your duty is to enlighten that person. Knowing that others behave badly will not save you. Someone says, “I know a priest who does this, and I know a man who attends Church, serves on the parish committee, makes a great show of his zeal, yet did this and broke up a married couple.” But you must do what is good, and you must not break up a married couple. You must fast and not steal. You must attend Church and not harm another person. You must do both. We have an obligation to enlighten others. Most of the world has not been instructed. Someone says, “I did not know there was such a thing as fasting. No one ever told me.” Some people are right: they truly have never heard. And now you see the result. In connection with this point I have been making, let us turn to a parable.
It is the parable of the laborers in the vineyard, in the twentieth chapter of Matthew. Open it and read it. Early in the morning, the householder went to the marketplace—to what we might today call the coffeehouse—and found some men sitting there. He said, “Why are you sitting here? Will you come and work in my vineyard?” “We will,” they replied. They agreed on a wage of one denarius. “Very well, go,” he said. Later the master went out again. At the third hour, nine in the morning, he found others sitting idle. “Are you not working?” he asked. “No one has hired us.” “Go and work in the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.” “Yes, we will go.” They rose and went. At the sixth hour, noon, he found still others idle. “What are you doing here?” he asked.
They answered, “No one has hired us.” “Go and work in the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.” At three in the afternoon, the ninth hour, the same thing happened. “What are you doing here?” “No one has hired us.” He went out, roused them all, and sent them to work in the vineyard. They did not go looking for work themselves. Man does not go to Christ. Man does not want Christ, because Christ tells him so many things he must not do. Therefore Christ will go to man. But how will Christ go to man unless people place themselves at Christ’s service and are sent? “And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” Have we, then, placed ourselves at the service of others through Jesus? Are we doing anything? Many people ask us, “Why, for example, does the Bible Society sell the Old Testament for one hundred and fifty drachmas, while the Zoe Brotherhood charges five or six hundred?”
Yes—but how many people make donations to the Bible Society? Have you given even a penny to the Zoe Brotherhood so that a book you consider beneficial for the salvation of souls may be published more cheaply and distributed? If we could examine the income of the Bible societies, we would find entire budgets supplied through donations. People consider it necessary to send part of their possessions to the Bible Society that publishes the Scriptures. That is how they can sell them for one hundred and fifty drachmas—and even that price is high. They are not produced with money taken from the publishers’ own pockets, but with donations from the public, from the Protestant world, from people who understand and help bring out editions of the Scriptures.
Have we ever given them even a penny? We do not give even the best of what we have. If we happen to have a coin that no one will accept, we drop it into the Church collection. “Do you have some small change for Church? The Church cannot use large coins. Do you have change so that we can light a candle? You cannot light a candle with a large coin.” Am I merely saying these things? Are these Orthodox material values of ours? Am I lying or completely out of touch with reality? What is the truth? Tell me, then: how will another person be enlightened? Today we have cassette tapes. Someone says, “Can you come, Mr. Panagopoulos?” “I cannot come, but I will send you myself.” My dear friend, go without one sweet, buy a cassette, and send it to the village from which you come, where you know there is so much ignorance and the people are ready to listen.
If we speak here to a thousand people, nine hundred and fifty may hear nothing at all; they have grown accustomed to it. But in that village, nine hundred and fifty would listen. The same happens abroad. Speak to a hundred people there and ninety-nine will listen; perhaps one will not. Indeed, I tell you, all one hundred may listen. That does not happen here, and God will hold us accountable. Remember Paul: when people rejected the word, he said, in effect, “We shall leave and go to the nations.” We could be doing so much work elsewhere. One simple thing is to subscribe to a magazine and have it sent to someone. What a simple undertaking! We incur so many unnecessary expenses every day. No one becomes poor by doing this. Yet because we fail to act, people remain in ignorance.
Has anyone among us sent money to the missions abroad? Let him raise his hand. Has one person done so? Two? Who has sent anything? We shall give out prizes now! Has anyone sent five hundred or a thousand drachmas a year to the missions abroad, where missionaries are among peoples who once devoured one another and are now giving them Christian formation? We removed from the service the words, “All catechumens, depart.” “We have no catechumens,” they say. Are there no catechumens in those lands? Apart from a few people, we do not even pray for them. When the service says, “All catechumens, depart,” do the people respond from their hearts with “Amen,” with a true yes, to the petitions “for the catechumens,” and “bless them and baptize them,” and so forth? Who has done this? That is why people remain in ignorance. We help them in a thousand other matters that lead them toward destruction,
yet in these essential matters we do not help them. I do not know; perhaps, as I keep telling you, I am out of touch with reality. But I speak from personal experience, and I shall be held accountable. We can help many people. You do not have to send something with your signature on it. You do not have to include your address book or personal details. Send it anonymously. You know that a certain problem exists in that home. The person may not open it now; he may throw it aside. Perhaps the Lord will allow him to be confined to bed, and then he will read it. Even if the person directly concerned does not read it, someone else in the household may. In this way, it is as though you have placed a nurse in that home. What does a nurse do? The nurse receives the physician’s instructions and carries them out. The nurse is not the physician; someone else is the physician who writes the prescription. But the nurse puts the treatment into effect. At this moment, I am training nurses.
Let us suppose that I am the physician. You must take what I give you and put it into action for the sick people who are not here, who do not want to come, and who, for the moment, do not want to listen. That is how things are. It is an immense, invisible organism in which everyone must take his place and ask what he can do. As I told you, one woman cried out, “If only these things had wings!” You can put them in a bag, give them wings, and send them. Many know what has been said even today, but they do not consider it worth discussing. Among a hundred thousand people, perhaps one or two will come and say, “I am giving you this amount to use as you see fit for spreading the word and enlightening people,” or, “I will pay for The Voice of the Lord to be sent to such-and-such a village for six months.”
Or someone may say, “I know another magazine,” or, “Let me pay for one hundred cassette tapes, and you can send them wherever you think best.” Perhaps one or two people in a hundred thousand will be found to do this. Everyone else spends money on comfort, savings, heating, air-conditioning, holidays, and one thing after another. If we do not place ourselves at Christ’s disposal, if we do not place our money and our prayer at His disposal, how will this work be done? How will this world be enlightened? Therefore, whether the prodigal remains outside, whether the unbeliever remains outside, or whether ignorance scourges people and keeps so many of them outside, we bear our share of the guilt. Let us not try to...
cast this responsibility off our shoulders. Let it remain with us always, following us like a shadow and examining our conscience: “What did I fail to do today that I could have done, whether by word or by deed?” Then you will see Christ condescend to help us, and things will change. Even those who can do nothing else can pray. Stop praying only for the little grandchild, for little Katina, little Eleni, and this or that individual. Stop limiting your prayer to these things. They are within God’s providence, and God will arrange them. Pray for the enlightenment of the world; that God may raise up laborers for His vineyard; that He may preserve our Orthodox faith; that He may preserve the clergy, our language, and our customs; and that He may protect us from visible and invisible evil. This is what our prayer should be. Then you will see miracles. God will confound all those scoundrels.
They will vote for laws and enact laws that truly serve the human person. This is not my own idea or slogan; it comes from Paul, and therefore from Paul and Christ. Does not Paul tell Timothy to pray for kings, rulers, and those in authority, “that we may lead a quiet life”? Let them be thieves. Let them be unbelievers, Freemasons, atheists, or even Beelzebub himself sitting in the government or the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Christ has the tool to turn their minds around, so that they act for the good of His Church and of the people. But we have not asked. Since we have not asked, we shall not receive. Keep this in mind and pray wherever you are. You do not always have to be on your knees when that is not possible. Nor must you always have a prayer book or the Synekdemos in your hand when you do not have the opportunity.
As you walk along the road, keep saying within yourself: “My Christ, do not abandon us. My Christ, we are sinners. My Christ, raise up people to enlighten us. We are in thick darkness. Give us strength. Preserve our customs. Preserve our Church. Shelter our clergy.” We shall understand the importance of all this when we die. If we do not leave behind such treasures, if we do not preserve our Greek customs and leave the holy faith to those who follow us, then we shall understand the harm we have done to others and to ourselves—but it will be too late. Things do not end at the grave; the grave does not release us from all concern. The serious things lie beyond the grave, and they depend on what happens on this side of it—on our life and conduct here. What we find there will correspond to how we labor here.
Do not let these things escape your attention. We bear responsibility. If we ask, He will give to us. If we do not ask, this world will remain outside and perish. People will be lost because of our omissions. We must act either by word or by deed—that is, through a book, a cassette tape, prayer, and so forth. We must become active members of the Church and active participants in the effort to enlighten others. Even if we do not bring back a single person—though we do not really know who returns and who does not, because, as I told you earlier, pride prevents a person from admitting it—we should not expect to hear about it. You see that whenever Christ worked a miracle, He said, “Tell no one.” Why, then, should we expect recognition? Besides...
if we wanted to hear it and receive thanks—if we wanted people to tell us that we were the reason they were rescued or enlightened in some situation—then we would receive no spiritual benefit. Christ preached, and people even said that He had Satan within Him because of what He taught them. Yet He was never angry with them and never expected applause. He did what He was required to do on His part, and then left the choice to each person, because, as you see, we are free. Human freedom is what restrains God from intervening by force. This is the great gift: the human person is free either to receive Him or not to receive Him. But when we misuse our freedom,
we shut Him out. Yet once we have planted this seed within a person—once we have spoken the truth and it has reached his ears—it continues working inwardly, wearing away his resistance. To the extent that his inner world permits it, one day you will see that truth grow strong, cast everything else aside, and lead him to metanoia, to repentance, and Holy Confession. There are no evil people; there are people who have not been enlightened. You should understand this. Ask God to bring you face-to-face with people whom you are capable of helping, because we cannot stand and speak to everyone. I will speak according to my own understanding and to people at my level. A priest may speak at a higher level, someone else higher still, and another person at a simpler level. I remember when I began speaking thirty years ago. This was my prayer: “Lord, send me wherever You think best, wherever I can say something for the sake of Your name,”
“Let me not become the cause of Your being insulted.” And so I began. I would read, for example, the life of Saint George, on the occasion of his feast being the next day or the day after. Then I would give a homily, recounting the life of Saint George. The next day, I would speak about something else—safe and certain things—so that I would not become the cause of Christ being blasphemed, nor cause any soul to fall, nor put forward anything of my own, yet also not stand apart from a mission to which I could see that He had called me. There are many ways, if a person is willing, but until now we have not been willing. Perhaps we too have been unwilling through ignorance. There are so many ways available to us, often involving material things. I say, give something. I do not know anyone who tells me...
Ask the priest who hears confessions; ask the parish charitable society. Or, if you know nothing about it, put something into the poor box, because those responsible know who the people in need are. Is that not so? Can we call ourselves Christians when the poor box is opened every fifteen days and only one hundred drachmas are found inside? And where do we think we are going? Do we think we shall see Heaven? How shall we see Heaven? What are they supposed to distribute? Are they to divide one hundred drachmas—made up of contributions of one hundred and fifty, eighty, or thirty drachmas—among twenty, thirty, or fifty families with so many needs? Yet at every moment we throw away so many things. Christ will call us to account. We cannot plead ignorance in such matters. We are crafty and indifferent. Christ will call us to account. I pray that He does. There is metanoia, repentance. When there is the humble plea, “Bless me,” I am not afraid. Even if I commit a greater sin, if I have the humility to say, “Bless me,” and to say, “I repent; enlighten me so that I may change my life,” then I am not afraid. We must therefore respond in every way: materially as well, but above all spiritually.
And if, concerning material help, I say, “I cannot do anything,” then we must change our way of life. This is why some remain in unbelief: they see no good works among our own people. Others, in their ignorance, remain in the same pattern. We shall stop here and, God willing, perhaps continue.

Κάνει το έργο του. Εμείς δεν παίρνουμε καμιά θέση με τους απίστους και υπεκφεύγουμε σε γενέθλια ακατάρτιστοι, δεν μπορούμε να τους πούμε δύο λόγια, που πολλές φορές είναι και πρόσωπα προσφιλή δικά μας και εκ του συναισθήματος θα θέλαμε κάτι να πούμε. Ας ρωτήσει ο καθένας τον εαυτό του μήπως έγινε κάποιος ή παραμένει άπιστος. Ο πρεσβύτερος θα μπορούσε να γίνει πιστός, στην ακαταστή αναπολόγητος. Ας το προσέξουμε. Το «δεν μπορώ» είναι αστείο. Το «δεν θέλω» είναι αλήθεια. Αυτό είναι. Πολλοί μακαρίζουν τους ανθρώπους που τους δίνεται η ευκαιρία να ακούσουν. Οι άλλοι μακάριζαν τους ανθρώπους που τους δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να βλέπουν τον Χριστό από κοντά και θαύματα. Δεν είναι στα μάτια τους; Ο Χριστός μας θαυματουργεί σήμερα. Ο Χριστός έφυγε για το εξωτερικό και δεν υπάρχει μεταξύ μας;
Η απάντηση από όλους. Πού είναι να πάνε; Προσευχήθηκες τίποτε να στείλει ο Θεός ιεραποστόλους πίστεως; «Πώς θα κηρύξουνε, πώς θα ακούσουνε», λέγει, «πώς θα πιστέψουν αν δεν ακούσουνε, και πώς θα κηρύξουνε εάν δεν αποσταλούν;» Ποιος θα κηρύξει; Κάποιος που θα αποσταλεί. Εζήτησα εγώ; Ζητώ επέκταση του φωτός. Ζητώ επέκταση της γραμμής τηλεφωνικής. Ζητώ επέκταση του ύδατος, να μην αγοράζω από τα βυτία. Ζητώ τηλεφωνικές εγκαταστάσεις. Ζητώ γιατρό και ιατρεία στην γειτονιά μου. Καλά κάνω και ζητώ όλα αυτά. Ζητάμε και από τον Θεό να βγάλει εργάτες στον αμπελώνα Του;
Στο ακροατήριο πολύς κόσμος ήτανε. Ήταν και ένας αρχιφύλαξ με τη μνηστή του. Και όταν άκουσαν ότι κυκλοφόρησε τέτοιο βιβλίο, αμέσως πήγε ο νους τους στη σύζυγο του διευθυντού της αστυνομίας, φίλου, η οποία ήτο έγκυος και επρόκειτο να πάει να σκοτώσει το παιδί την άλλη μέρα. Εγώ μιλώ με οχτώ με εννέα. Αυτοί πήρανε βιβλίο. Γνωρίζουν ότι η κυρία του διευθυντού έχει κλείσει ραντεβού αύριο για να πάει να πετάξει το παιδί. Πώς να φτάσει αυτό το βιβλίο στα χέρια της το βράδυ; Πώς να πάνε να χτυπήσουν την πόρτα σε τέτοια ώρα;
