Summary
John Climacus describes three demonic traps: preventing good works, corrupting their motives, and inspiring pride after they are completed well. Sunday worship should begin the week with thanksgiving to Christ and prayer for the week’s sanctification, protection, and illumination. Believers must avoid comparison with worse sinners, judgment of others, and inattentive hymnody, because prayer is the spiritual watchpost that guards the soul.

May we meet again and again, by His grace, to say a few words during the remaining days in which we may be able to stay with you. Those who have been with us for our recent talks will remember our subject. We spoke about two of the three categories of people: those who remain outside the Church, and those who enter the Church—but the question is, how do they enter? In general, Satan sets three traps for a person and tries, one way or another, to catch him. If he does not catch him here, he will catch him farther on; and if not there, then farther still. In any case, he wants to catch him somewhere. One of the Fathers of nepsis, or watchfulness—John Climacus—speaks about these three traps by which Satan leads a person astray. Listen to how he puts it: “The demons dig three pits for us.” Three pits, that is, three trenches, three traps, which the demons commonly dig in order to catch a person.
I do not know whether you have ever seen how lions, bears, and other wild animals are caught in the jungles. People dig pits and cover them with branches. The animals walk unsuspectingly through the forest, fall in, and are caught. So he says here: “The demons dig three pits for us.” Then he explains what these pits are, what holes and snares they dig: “First, they struggle to prevent the good from being done.” They struggle, he says, to keep a person from doing good, whether toward others or toward himself.
“Second, after their first defeat,” if they do not succeed in preventing it, they struggle “so that it may not be done according to God.” If someone does good, they try to make him do it out of egotism, to place someone under an obligation, with some calculation in mind, or in expectation of something in return—so that it will not be done rightly, as God desires. Satan first tries to stop a person from doing good. But if he cannot stop him, he induces him to do it in such a way that Satan himself still has a share in it. “But when they fail in this purpose also”—when they do not succeed, and the person does what is right and good, as God desires and as he is able—then...
They change their appearance and become like angels. Before this they were attacking, creating difficulties, setting traps, and so forth.
They take on the appearance of an angel, draw near to the person, and, “quietly standing beside us, deep within the soul they call us blessed as people who live according to God.” “If only others were like you! If only others did what you do! If only others attended Church as you do! If only they came early in the morning as you do! It is no ordinary thing that you come so early.” And by this means Satan brings you down. Where can a person now keep watch? How can he guard himself? Yet he does not see these traps Satan has set. He may be buried in one of the three, with Satan holding him bound by the foot, while he imagines that he is in the third heaven. And so, my beloved, we make mistakes.
Continuing from what we have already discussed, I would now like us to enter the Church. We are not among those who remained outside. We are not among those who revile the Church, the Mysteries, Christ, or the Most Holy Theotokos. We believe, and now we enter within; thus we come to the third category.
You attend Church—of course you do. But when do you go? Suppose the service here begins at nine and ends at twelve or twelve-thirty. When do you arrive? Are you in Church at nine? “Father, must I go to Church first thing in the morning?” In my homeland, people ask, “Has the third bell rung yet?” Then they decide it is time to get up and shave. The first two bells—and perhaps even the third—are for the priest and the others, not for us! But a person who wishes to be called a Christian cannot say that merely because he goes to Church, everything is well. If he does not attend properly and arrive at the proper time, he still falls short. Someone may ask, “But what if I cannot?” That is another matter. We are not speaking about someone who is ill.
We are not speaking about someone who must work, or a mother with a small child who cannot take the child out early in the morning. We are not speaking about those who have valid reasons. I do not know whether you have heard the words said when the Holy Gifts are brought out: “And for those absent for good and reasonable causes.” This refers to those who have a reason not to be in Church at that hour, or not to be there at all that day. The Holy Gifts are offered for them as well, and prayer is made for them. But for anyone else—for me—there is no excuse. You go to a performance from the beginning and pay attention. You go to a meal when it begins, not when everyone else is clearing away the plates; you arrive at the beginning and sit at the table. How, then, can you go to Church whenever you please?
Some people may simply have failed to notice this third trap of Satan. He tells you, “It is all right; you will go. It is not the end of the world if you are late.” You might say that when attending a wedding. If I am the groom and we arrive two minutes late, the couple will still be married. We will wish them many happy years; that is a different matter. Or perhaps you are attending a Baptism. “Am I the one being baptized? I am only the sponsor. What difference do five minutes make? If necessary, let us arrive five minutes late.” But that is not the point here. Here the matter is personal for each and every one of us.
This matter must therefore be examined. A person who does not come to Church early—when the curtain is opened, the priest begins with “Blessed is our God,” and Matins is being served—loses a great opportunity both to benefit others and to be benefited himself.
Someone may ask, “How am I to be benefited in Church? By lighting a candle?” That is not what I mean. There is another opportunity to do good, one which, unfortunately, we do not know very well. It is the time of the Proskomedia. Do you know what the Proskomedia is, both as a place and as a sacred action? It is the offering connected with the Holy Eucharist, where the offerings are presented and the priest prepares them, removing a particle for each person. At this point in the service of the Holy Eucharist, anyone who understands what is taking place should be in Church. First, he should offer his own gift and submit the names of his parents, his friends, his enemies, and those who have no one
to present their names in the Church. Many people around us live far from the Church. Others have departed this life without having had any relationship with the Church, or without having put everything fully in order. They need the love of Christians, who will remember them at the Proskomedia. If people knew—and if those who are now in the other life knew
what they would encounter when they went above—they would understand what great treasures are laid up when someone has done even a small material act of kindness for his fellow human beings.
It is true that many people come to Church early but do not know this detail, and they simply sit there. I do not know what they say; perhaps they say an occasional “Lord have mercy.” But while the priest is serving the Proskomedia, you could stand attentively and bring before God all those who are in such great need today: the children who need the grace of the Holy Eucharist, the married couples whose homes are being shipwrecked, those living far away, the sick, and so many, many others. The priest, of course, has a paper before him and reads names such as “Constantine, Vasiliki, Nicholas, John,” and so forth. And I too can say from where I stand: “Nyssa, Demetrios, Asimo, John, Kalliope, Savvas, Savvas.” I also speak their names. I am a member of the Church, and I too can mention them there as the priest removes the particles...
and include my own names among them. Have you not heard, a little later in the Divine Liturgy, the deacon say, “And those whom each one has in mind,” followed by, “And for all men and women”? At that moment, whatever is in your mind—whoever you wish to commemorate, whoever you wish to pray for, whatever material or spiritual concern troubles you as a Christian in this world—bring it before God. For the consecration has taken place; Christ has come and rests upon the Precious Gifts. You too may now mention these things. The priest reads the names given to him, especially those of the departed, the sick, and so forth. But we merely stand and wait for him to finish
so that we can take part, because we do not understand. Consequently, we neither benefit others nor are we ourselves benefited, although there is a blessing in doing good. I benefit myself when I bring before God someone who left nobody behind—or who, even if he did leave people behind, might as well have left no one. The departed man knew, of course, how to provide his children with bread, clothing, and perhaps a roof over their heads. But he did not know how to give them Christ. He educated them, raised their social standing, and helped them prosper according to the world, but he did not raise them according to Christ. Now those children see nothing spiritual. “Mother,” the departed man groans from above, and so forth. This responsibility now falls to me; it depends upon my own small act. And I myself will be benefited by doing it. Yet this opportunity is lost.
It is lost. And why is it also lost for the clergy? Because they too, many times, do not do their work properly.
They commemorate only a few of those whose lists are given to them. Yet all those recorded in the diptychs there, the people of the Church, should be brought to remembrance. They may commemorate them collectively; I have no objection to that. Perhaps I am even sinning at this moment by saying such a thing. But effort is required. Those who believe rightly go to Church two, three, or even four hours earlier.
They take part in the Proskomedia. It is a great thing to bring people before God and place them upon the holy diskos—and it costs nothing. No money is needed, no special knowledge, no lawyers, no legal arrangements—nothing at all. All that is needed is a good heart. “Remember that grandmother too, Lord. Remember the neighbor across the street. Remember that sick person. Remember the one in prison. Remember those married couples whose homes are falling apart. Remember the young. And remember the Church
and raise up laborers for her,” and so forth. So when you go to Church, you have work to do. You have a serious reason to go, and you have something to gain. Whatever you failed to do throughout the whole week, you can do within fifteen minutes if you go to Church properly in the morning, participate in the life of the Church, and go out of love. Yet in this matter many of us fall short. We do not accomplish it; we do not do it; perhaps, someone may say, we simply do not know. I have no objection to that. I am not judging anyone. I am merely speaking, preaching, and reminding you. Whoever wishes may gather provisions now so that he will have something for the winter, because this is how things are. So I ask: Do we come to Church early in the morning, or do we not?
We may have good reasons for not coming early, because, as I said, there are often circumstances that prevent us from arriving at the proper time. We should not simply say, “Well, at least we are here.” Perhaps we had a valid reason why we could not come early. But I am speaking to those who do come early: they should take care to make good use of the time they spend in Church. Of course, a person does not come to Church to show off his suit. He comes to meet his God, to thank Him for the week that has passed—for the health He gave him, the work He gave him, the understanding He gave him, the light He gave him, and the bread He gave him—and to entreat Him on this first day of the week. For Sunday is the first day of the week, not Monday, as we commonly say. Monday itself might say, “You call me the second day, so why do you put me first?” Tuesday is the third day, and so on. The first day of the week is Sunday.
On this first day, he should ask Christ to sanctify it, so that the whole week may be sanctified, protected, and illumined by Him. This is the spirit in which a person should attend Church. Now let us go a little further. I go to Church early in the morning. Why do I go? I go to pray. Very well, you pray. What is the Church called? It is called a house of prayer. And what does David say? “In the churches bless God.” So you and I, who are now in Church, are we truly blessing our God? Are we worshipping our God? Are we praying? That is the question. It is the second part of this third general question.
There are people who attend Church and, throughout all three hours, do not say even one “Lord have mercy”—not even one. Their mind may wander for hours and travel who knows where, and only then do they come to themselves. But it is over; the service is finished. A pleasant journey to you, then! Nothing happened, as though you had not been there at all. “Look, something is carrying my nous away.” Yes, because you let it carry your nous away. If that same enemy came to seize you and throw you from a cliff, would you go with him? If he came to give you a glass of poison, would you drink it? If he took your hand and tried to put it into an electrical socket so that you would be electrocuted, would you let him? No, you would not. Why? Because you are attentive. You struggle. You fight.
You resist! You stand against him. Why do you not do the same here? Why do you not struggle here as well, to guard your nous and keep it under control? Have you seen what they put on the horses that pull carts, back in the old country? They put blinders beside their eyes. Why? So that they will not look from side to side, but only straight ahead, lest they go over an edge or fall into a hollow or a ditch, and so that the animal will not be distracted. We come to Church and may even stand near the sanctuary, yet we watch what is happening behind us at the candle stand—who came in, what they are wearing, what they look like, what fashion they are following, and so on. We have not come to pray. What good is it, then, that we go to Church? What good is it that we go early? A struggle is needed, my beloved, to gather our nous and enable it to become one with Christ.
It is not enough simply to appear there in person; I must participate in the prayer. And this too, I say again, is lacking in some people. Yes. Moreover, when a person goes to Church, he must take care not only that his suit is clean, or his underclothes and shoes are clean, but above all that his soul is clean.
A person goes to Church above all to receive something. He will give, but he will also receive; and both what he gives and what he receives depend upon his purity. Yet we pay attention to none of this. We merely bathe and wash away the outward dirt that...
...we accumulated during our work throughout the week. We pay attention to nothing else. How, then, will Christ give to us? He looks to see to whom He will give, and how clean the vessel is into which He will place what that person is asking for. Do you know what one of the Fathers says about this? Listen to his words. To put it simply: do you think you can truly fill a vessel with clean water before emptying out the dirty water already inside it? This is true. We take the vessel just as it is, filled with all the filth of the week—or not merely one week, but weeks, months, and many years—and without making any preparation to cleanse it, we go to Church with all that dirty water accumulated inside us: whatever entered through the eyes, the ears, the senses, the flesh, or through judging others. It enters in a thousand ways. For, as you may know, a person has ten openings: the five pairs we once spoke about, the paired senses through which we function—two ears, two eyes, two organs of touch, two of smell, two of taste, and so on. By putting these five senses to work—the five pairs of oxen mentioned in the parable—we defile our inner world. Yet we take this vessel exactly as it is and carry it into Church. What can Christ put into it?
We have not emptied out the dirty water, so how can we put clean water inside? These are thoughts every Christian needs to consider. We will pass through this life only once, not many times—only once. We must pass through it rightly and make good use of the opportunity Christ gives us. Do you know what another Father says? Listen. When we leave our opportunities unused, we are like a sailing ship that failed to make use of a fair wind blowing so favorably.
Think of a sailing ship without an engine, driven only by its sails. The wind is blowing, but its sails are lowered. As we say, when the wind is blowing, that is the time to grind the grain; when the wind is blowing, that is the time to sail. If you do not make use of that moment, how will you move when the wind dies down? Can you do anything then? It makes no difference to the wind whether it is used or not. The wind will not be grieved because you and I failed to spread our sails and move forward. But for the sailing ship—for the human person—it would have been a powerful means of reaching the destination more quickly. Yes, this too is serious: as I told you, we fail to make good use of our time.
The way we spend our time there is not the way of an illumined person. Make use of the time. Stop and think: will I still be here this afternoon, at noon, tonight, or during the rest of the week, until I return next Sunday? Let me stop now and tell Him everything, now that He has given me the opportunity. Tomorrow is not mine; no one knows what it will bring. “Tomorrow has its own trouble.” So let me make use of this moment. As we say in everyday speech, now that the wheel is turning, now that the wind is blowing, now is the time to winnow. And yet we fail to use this time. We remain timidly standing there, watching what the person beside us says, what someone else says, who is coming in, what they are doing, and so on. We do not struggle. Satan comes and carries away the nous, and so the person remains there with his fine suit and careful appearance, without truly participating.
He may say that he is participating: “But I am praying to God.” Allow me to answer. Yes, you are praying. But what are you praying for? What exactly are you saying? What are you asking? Are you asking God to help you evict your tenant so that you can charge more rent? Tell me, what are you asking? Are you asking Him to make your husband ill and punish him because he does not listen to you or do as you say? Or is the husband asking Him to punish his wife? What are you asking? Why do we dictate to God: “Give that man an illness; give him cancer”? Have we not gone there to plead for forgiveness of our sins? Have we gone there to command God to deal with other people as we wish? Think about it, and forgive me. Of course, this is not merely my own opinion. You know what is said.
It is not permissible, we are told, to use prayer to make God your servant. Yet we continually say, “Give me this, give me that, arrange this for me, change my job, fix one thing, fix another.” That is not how it should be. When you go to Church, you should go to pray for the forgiveness of your sins. Whoever you may be and whatever virtue you may possess—even if you stand at the very entrance of Paradise—you should go to pray for the forgiveness of your sins. Sins, yes. Saint John Climacus says, “Even if you ascend the entire ladder of the virtues, pray for the forgiveness of sins.”
Have all of us ascended the ladder? Have we climbed the steps of the virtues? Have we accomplished everything? Do we possess almsgiving, prayer, hospitality, forgiveness, and such things? But even if you possess them all—even if you have put all these things in order—pray for the forgiveness of sins. Sin is so subtle: it settles upon the human heart and soul, where no lens can detect it as Christ does. Consider this: if you read Job, you will find that God finds fault even with the moon, and that the angels are not pure before His eyes. If that is so, how far beneath them are we?
Can a human being born of woman, Scripture says, possibly be without sin? It is impossible. Or do we imagine ourselves righteous simply because we are a little better than others? That is the whole problem. Brother, you compare yourself with someone worse than you, not with someone better. Once, after a talk in Athens about avoiding childbirth and the various ways people prevent children from being born, I spoke with a woman. She said to me, “Mr. Panagopoulos, I may be guilty of the things you spoke about tonight. It is true that I have had eleven abortions, but I know a friend who has had twenty-four.” She consoled herself with the thought that another woman had had twenty-four.
Will the fact that you had eleven bring you into Paradise? Suppose the staircase leading to Paradise has thirty steps. If that woman is twenty-four steps short and you are eleven steps short, what difference does it make? Are you able to enter? You too are still outside. Count them up and see how many they are. The fact that she lacks twenty-four steps changes nothing if you lack eleven. Some of us compare our lives with the lives of those who are worse than we are. You will remember that our devout parents, simple and uneducated though they may have been, always told us, “Have you seen that family’s children? Have you seen that woman’s daughter?” They taught us to compare our lives with those who were better. They did not point to delinquent girls or street prostitutes and tell us to follow them.
They showed us people with whom we should compare ourselves, whom we should imitate and strive to equal, so that we might reach the sound standing of that boy, that girl, that family man, and so on. Should we not do the same in this matter? Yet we remain under the impression that everything has somehow been set right.
Even inside the Church, many of us not only fail to pray but actually remain in sin. There is a troparion—you may know it better than I do—which says, “Many times, while offering hymnody, I was found fulfilling sin: speaking one thing with my tongue, but considering another in my soul.” The mouth was saying one thing while the nous was saying another. Thank you. How attentive a person must be! He must do what the Saints of God tell us to do.
Recognize the darkness within your heart and the weakness dwelling in your members, and cast away every inclination to judge your neighbor. Even inside the Church, we often catch ourselves judging and condemning others, from the sanctuary all the way to the candle stand. And we are standing before the great Judge who will judge the living and the dead. We stand before this Judge, who is God, and yet He Himself judges no one.
The Father, Scripture says, does not judge. “He has committed all judgment to the Son.” Yet man judges and condemns others even inside the Church. The priest did not do something properly; the chanter did not sing something properly; someone did not join the procession; or it is something else. At once the barb enters; judgment and condemnation enter the heart. And instead of receiving mercy from God, that person achieves the exact opposite. I do not know which category you belong to as you hear these words now, or as you may hear them later. But the person who enters the Church and does not pray is...
...a living corpse. Broadly speaking, prayer must always be present within a person, because neglecting prayer is the same as abandoning one’s watchpost. Let me say it again. Listen: neglecting prayer is the same as abandoning one’s watchpost. You know what a watchpost is. A soldier remains there awake and alert, guarding the borders and ready to signal danger to the army while it rests. If that watchpost is abandoned, is the person in danger or not?
God has already placed certain watchposts within us. What are the tonsils? A watchpost. And whoever has his tonsils removed can suffer serious harm. They are the first to swell, the first to become inflamed, the first to sound the warning, and the first to call for an antibiotic. That is their function. The same is true in the legs, and elsewhere. The body has many watchposts for its defense. And you should know that prayer is the defense of the soul. When a person prays, the enemy cannot touch him. You can use a wire however you please, but you cannot do so when it is carrying electricity. Once it is plugged into the socket, you cannot pick it up whenever you wish and do whatever you like with it. The wire is live. And throughout his whole life, if possible, night and day, a person must...
pray. Someone may ask, “Must he stop working in order to pray and say, ‘Lord have mercy’?” He does not need to stop working. While you are whistling, while you are talking about horse racing and football, while you are talking about this woman or that man, about card games and so many other things, you could say, “Lord have mercy. Lord, have mercy on my husband, who has been among the beasts of this world since morning. Bring him home unhurt and keep him from harm. Have mercy on my child, my daughter, my son, who is struggling at school. Be with my child today during the test and in everything that must be done.”
“Have mercy on our Church, Lord.” There—just a few words. This contact with God keeps a person spiritually warm at all times. And when a person is warm, Satan cannot lay a hand on him. Satan cannot lay a hand on him. There is a story...
A rich man, among his many extravagances, kept dogs and employed a special cook for them. He had a great cauldron in which choice foods were cooked for the dogs. All around the cauldron were receptacles like large, deep dishes. When the fine morsels for the dogs had finished boiling, the man appointed to the task would take a large ladle and pour the food into those great dishes. So the food was boiling hot; it burned and steamed. When a dog approached, drawn by the savory smell—and perhaps hungry as well—it would try to eat, but the food was too hot.
It burned him, and he drew back. His nose was scorched, and he pulled away. He ran around and around, but could do nothing. He kept running about, waiting for the food gradually to cool. Once it had cooled, he settled down and ate it. As long as it remained hot, he could not eat it. Satan is like that. When he sees a person speaking with his God—even while driving a car—and saying, “Lord, my Most Holy Theotokos, shelter us. Shelter the people in this car, shelter our society, shelter the young, shelter married couples and those who have gone astray; shelter society as a whole and the Church. My God, shelter those who have never yet known You, and those who have zeal but not according to knowledge and therefore bring about the opposite result. Shelter them as well”—then Satan cannot approach.
Do we not know about all these needs? Can you not say a few words? How many other things we examine curiously, and how many useless things occupy our nous, our spiritual intellect! Satan will not let us pray, and we make no effort. If we are in love with someone, we want to talk of nothing else: “And do you know about his tie? Do you know what George did yesterday? Do you know what Katiní did yesterday?” If possible, we would speak about that person night and day, because this is our beloved, the one with whom we hope to share our life, and so forth. Should God not also be part of our thoughts? Is He not the Bridegroom of our soul? Is He not the One who gives us all these things—bodily things, worldly things, everything? As I tell you, let Him take pleasure away, and can we live? Nothing would function. Let Him take away the tongue’s sensitivity, so that it has neither sensation nor taste. Then everything is useless, and food itself may become poison to you. These things are gifts from God, but they were not given for man’s destruction.
Give thanks to Him. Have you ever stopped to think? Are these human achievements? Did our mother make them? What you made, your mother made; what your mother made, her mother made; and what her mother made, another mother made. No human being made these things. We only damage them, turning their use into abuse. Someone in His wisdom must have fashioned all these things—and human beings themselves. Therefore, when a person goes to Church, he must not go there merely to stand with others and chat: “May we be here again next year! How are things at home?” No. Find somewhere to stand alone, with no one close beside you, so that you can pray. You will not manage it the entire time; that is true, because it is tiring. Every demon in the world gathers in the Orthodox churches every Sunday—whole regiments of them, from Beijing, America, and Canada—and they distract people with a thousand different things.
One strikes from here, another raises dust over there; there are children here, some other disturbance there, crying, dizziness, and confusion. Move off to the side if you must. You need a struggle there, my friend. That is why, as the Fathers teach and as the Church has established, we need prayer in order to pray. Two prayers are needed: one prayer asking for the grace to pray, and then the prayer itself. Have you noticed that all the services in Church begin with “O Heavenly King”? “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” is a prayer addressed to the Holy Spirit: “Who art everywhere present and fillest all things,” and “Giver of life,” as the prayer says, “come and dwell in us.” Come here and be with us. And Paul says in the eighth chapter of Romans...
It is the Spirit who “intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” If the grace of the Holy Spirit does not come upon a person at the time of prayer, he will merely speak words and the wind will carry them away. But when grace comes, he will shed tears and weep; he will humble himself, abase himself, and confess that he is nothing, and that everything depends upon the One who holds all things in His hand.
A person needs two prayers in order to pray. And I repeat: this is not what we do. That is why the saying is entirely correct: whoever neglects prayer is like a soldier abandoning his watchpost. The guard leaves his post and can no longer resist the temptation that comes. Therefore, take care when you enter the Church.
Enter with the purpose of truly worshiping. During prayer, my dear friends, what happens at death should happen within us. In other words, a person should die during prayer. What happens at death? The body remains below, while the little bird—the soul—flies upward. That is what should happen during prayer. Die to the things below. Forget everything and struggle to forget it, because Satan will make sure that you do not. So will Satan’s instruments, the demons around you. Struggle so that you may rise upward, so that your prayer may reach Heaven and you may offer back your blessing to God, and then depart transformed.
How different we would be when leaving the Church if we truly prayed! Even now, when we go merely in our good clothes and are not present in spirit, we still leave as different people. We may receive nothing more than a dry piece of antidoron—blessed bread after the Divine Liturgy—sometimes even from the candle stand, yet we still depart changed. Imagine, then, if we truly participated in the service, prayed, and strained our nous, our spiritual intellect, to follow attentively: “What is being said now? What is happening now?” We would come out as different people. And if we also received Holy Communion, Satan would see us from around the corners and flee. For when a person leaves the Church, he comes forth like a lion breathing fire. Satan sees one who emerges from the Church after prayer and Holy Communion all aflame, with fire issuing from his mouth, and he flees. He cannot bear even to look upon such a person.
Satan fears three things, as he himself confesses: “I fear water,” he says, “I fear a piece of wood, and I fear blood.” The water is Baptism, the wood is the Cross, and the blood is Holy Communion. These are what he fears and trembles at: that people might receive them and make proper use of them. I do not mean those who go on for many years without metanoia, without repentance, without Holy Confession, and so forth. But when we approach rightly, he is terrified and cannot stand before us. Many may say, “What you say is all very well, Panagopoulos, but we go to Church and other people will not let us pray.” As a dear friend once told me, the Church could perhaps offer parents some preparation concerning their children and so forth.
I could say the same. Thank you. The Church has room for adults and children alike. But, generally speaking, I would like to say this: many people who do not understand these matters correctly, although they are good and desire proper order, fail to understand that the Church is a hospital filled with sick people seeking healing. Yet they expect everyone inside to behave like angels. “The place is sacred,” they say. And who said it was not? Of course the place is sacred. But do you know that everyone here is sick—from the doctor, the chief physician, the bishop, the priest, the deacon, and the others who serve as nurses, to the chanters? Do you understand that? We too go to Church as sick people. If we were saints, if we were angels, we would have no need of the Church.
Consequently, when you enter a hospital, you will hear groaning; you will see pus, blood, wounds, and many other things. People go there to be healed. Do not expect to find only saints in the Church; do not expect everyone to be like an angel. Who told you there would be no struggle? And while you struggle, will you not hear someone muttering beside you? We know that sort of thing too. Everyone becomes an expert in Byzantine matters and everything else. One woman hears the person next to her and begins correcting the priest. Another hears someone and begins correcting the chanter. We all become chanters, priests, bishops, and deacons. Give the person beside you a little nudge and say, “Please move farther up if you wish, and let me pray,” or else change your own place and move elsewhere. You must struggle. When you go to Church, do not imagine that you are entering a greenhouse; you are entering a place where the devil wages war. He will trouble you in every possible way to keep you from praying.
Indeed, many times he will even make you sin—he will make you indignant, and then you will sin. On Great and Holy Friday, my dear friends—Great and Holy Friday!—a priest was preaching so movingly that he could make both people and stones weep. Two women beside the bishop’s throne were talking about the cemetery, and at one point one said to the other, “Oh, stop talking, woman!”
Now you tell me, my friend, what is one to make of that? There was a man nearby who became a Protestant because of such things. “Panagopoulos,” someone told me, “I dealt with this very issue the other evening. I was a guest at dinner in someone’s home and met such a man.” I asked him, “Why did you leave the Church where you used to worship?” “Because of this and that,” he replied. “I said I would go elsewhere, if only to have some peace and quiet.” Thank you.
Thank you. This is not the only such case. Therefore, you must go to Church armed and ready to face everything. You suffer together with your Christ, and you endure for your own spiritual good. That is where He is, so that is where you must go. Let no one lose heart and say, “I know what goes on there,” or “I will not go,” or “I will go somewhere else, supposedly because it is better and quieter.” Wherever you see complete quiet, beware: it may belong to the devil. Wherever you see turmoil, know that there is a struggle underway. I do not know—perhaps there is a doctor here and I am trespassing on his field—but let me say something. A doctor constantly monitors a fever, and when he sees it plummet, he says, “We need a cypress coffin; the case is lost.” He measures the fever repeatedly. From it, he judges the body’s response.
When he sees the fever plunge to thirty-six, thirty-five degrees, or something like that, then—call the hearse. The devil is necessary for our struggle. Without the devil, there are no saints. Those who want to remove the evil one so that they may supposedly become holy are mistaken. It is through resisting the evil one that they will become holy. It is like saying to a barber...
“Throw the whetstone out of the workshop. Why do you keep it here?” And he answers, “But that is where I sharpen the blade so I can shave with it.” Satan is the touchstone. Are you asking for Satan to be abolished? We are the ones who gave him his opportunity. Man invited him in. You remember when the serpents were biting the people...
Thank you.
They spoke against the manna, which was a type—a foreshadowing—of Christ, of His Body and Blood. Then the serpents came out and bit the Hebrews, and they died in the wilderness. What did they ask Christ to do? To take away the serpents. But Christ said, “No, I will not take away the serpents; instead, I will provide a remedy for their bites. The serpents will remain, because you yourselves brought them upon you.” Through our sin, we bring these things upon ourselves. Yet He provides the remedy, so that whoever is bitten may look upon it and not die. It is the same here. He does not take Satan away. He does not create tranquility. There will be turmoil, and within that turmoil man will find salvation. These things seem strange, but at last we must learn to understand them. After all, have we not reached the moon? We must understand all the tricks that take place within the Church, so that our labor in going to church may not be wasted. In any case.
There are other obstacles that prevent people from receiving anything when they go to church. Some eat their breakfast and then go. They smoke their pipe and then go. They drink their brandy and then go to church. They even take the newspaper along and go to church. What are they going there to do? What is their destination, what is their purpose? Why do you not prepare yourself? If you were going to the doctor for a medical test, would you first eat your breakfast? Tell me. Even if the doctor were not going to see you until one o’clock, you would remain strictly fasting until then. Why? So that the test you need could be performed. And if he told you that you had to fast for several days so that the test could give some useful result concerning your illness, would you do it or not? You would do it. Whatever the doctor tells you, you do.
But whatever Christ tells you, you do not do. What kind of life is this for a person—you, me, or anyone else? And we have many people like this. I am not saying that such a person should stop going to the Church. I tell him to go, but also to take care, little by little, to put these things away. For we can no longer call him a master; even if it sounds harsh, we cannot call him a master. A man who is enslaved to a bit of grass—to a cigarette—still wants to be called a master. But you are a slave; how can you be called a master? A slave of the passions wants to be called a master. “Be careful how you speak,” he says. I am careful, but I can see that you are a slave, not a master. A man should truly live up to the meaning of the word “master.” So there are also these people who, without any preparation at all...
...go to church well dressed, with full, rounded bellies. They go to church, light their candle, and then leave. They make up a significant proportion of those in the Church—a very significant proportion. And this group, this third category, does not receive the benefit it could receive. Another group among those who finally reach the Church are the people who are the first to leave, before the priest says, “Through the prayers of our holy fathers.” I want you to understand once and for all: the person who leaves the Church without a good reason before the priest says, “Through the prayers,” is not merely like Judas; he is Judas. Judas was the one who left before everything had ended and before they had given thanks.
After receiving the bread, just as we receive the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, some secretly take bread from the candle stand or obtain it some other way, tell the children to bring them some antidoron, and then leave. Others go out to smoke. Others leave because they do not want to remain any longer. “I have accomplished my purpose,” they say. These people resemble Judas. If you read the twenty-sixth chapter, which recounts the Mystical Supper, you will see that when the Mystical Supper took place, the only one who left before the meal had ended and before they had given thanks was Judas. Satan entered into him, and he went away and hanged himself. Even if a person’s body is not strangled today, his soul is strangled by Satan. The others, who remained, arose, gave thanks, and then our Christ went out.
He went to Gethsemane to pray, and afterward Judas betrayed Him. It is unthinkable that Christ should be in the Church, the Theotokos in the Church, the Saints in the Church, the Angels in the Church—everyone in the Church—and yet a person should want to leave. Where is he going? If there is a good reason, then let him go with God’s blessing. The Church, together with all her prayers, will also desire to bless you. But if there is no good reason, why this bad habit? Why this ignorance? What possible reason is there? A person must do everything possible to remain until the end, to give thanks, and only then to leave. He should hear, “Through the prayers,” wait for the good spirits to withdraw...
...those spirits that were present and were sanctifying us, and only then depart with God’s blessing. As for the person who is not in church for the first “Blessed is our God,” which the priest says in the morning—I too am a sinner and bear responsibility—he is just as sinful and responsible if he does not remain in church until “Through the prayers.” There are people who have acquired this good habit. They have grown accustomed to it and have understood: they are the first to arrive and the last to leave.
Those who complain that the service is supposedly too long, and so on and so forth, are the very ones who arrive after the Gospel, at the Creed. And yet they are also in the greatest hurry to leave. Those who come to church early in the morning are also the last to leave. It is a blessing for a person to remain in the house of God. If you visit the home of someone dear to you, would you want to leave an hour earlier? As far as your time permits, you try...
...to prolong your stay with those dear to you. Even if you only share a joke, without discussing anything serious, you still enjoy it. And you long for the time when you can be in the courts of the Lord. So is it wrong for a person to remain in the courts of this Lord? Of course, you do not remain beyond the time when you truly must leave. What else can you do? If you go to a wedding, will you simply leave? Will you abandon the newlyweds there and go away? Or will you wait until the bridegroom and the bride depart, and then leave? Good manners certainly require this. Is proper etiquette not also needed here? Should there not be good manners in church? There should. Let us pay attention to this as well, so that we do not unwittingly become types of Judas. The final category of people who go to church but are not benefited are those who attend yet do not receive Holy Communion without a good...
...reason. A good reason would be this: I am under a canon, a rule of penance. I went to Holy Confession, and I was given a canon. My spiritual father has forbidden me to approach for forty days, two months, one year, five years, ten years—I do not know how long. In that case, I may attend the Divine Liturgy, receive only the antidoron as a blessing, and refrain from Holy Communion. In other circumstances, however, I should receive Holy Communion, because otherwise I insult the master of the feast. Suppose you go to a wedding banquet and refuse to eat. What impression will that make on those who see you, and on those who invited you? Why do the bells ring three times? They are invitations.
The semantron is struck, the talanton sounds: it is a call to enter the Ark, because outside there will be a flood and you will perish. But once you have entered the Ark, how can you refuse to be nourished by the Ark? What would have happened to those who entered the Ark if they had not been fed within it, when at last they reached Ararat? We would have had the dead outside and another company of the dead inside. A person who goes to church but does not receive Holy Communion is like someone inside the Ark who refuses to eat. He will be dead inside, while everything outside is also dead. Satan is not afraid of such a person. This is why you see that everything goes well until the service reaches the Communion hymn and the moment for Holy Communion approaches. But as soon as the priest says, “With the fear of God,” and so forth, everything scatters.
That is the one moment in the Church that Satan fears. He wants to prevent a person from reaching Holy Communion, because when that person approaches and eats of the blessed Bread, what we discussed throughout an entire talk will take place—the same thing that happened at Emmaus, at the table that evening, when our Christ was received as a guest by Luke and Cleopas. When our Christ blessed the bread, broke it, and gave it to them, their eyes were opened.
That is the point. Satan wants us to remain like puppies—forgive the expression—with our eyes closed, so that we cannot see his tricks, and so that he can seize us, exploit us, and keep us under his control. The devil attacks two things in the Church: the pulpit and the Holy Chalice. “As long as the pulpit does not speak, I keep them all under my control.
“As long as the Holy Chalice is not used, I keep them all. Go on singing and saying that God is holy. Sing your terirem and say whatever else you please. I still have you under my control.”
During an all-night vigil at Petraki Monastery in Athens, a demon said, “Why are you holding that devil-rope in your hand?” There was a young woman holding a prayer rope, and the demon said, “Why are you holding that devil-rope in your hand? I have you. I have you.” She did not realize that he was speaking about her. She remained seated in her little chair, following the vigil and drawing the prayer rope through her fingers.
“I have you. I hold you by three things. Why do you keep pulling that? It does not work; it has no effect. I hold you by three things.” The others realized that he was speaking about this young woman and looked at her. “He is talking to you,” they said. “To me?” “Yes, he is talking to you.” She turned around.
He said, “You! I hold you by three things. Unless you go and confess the three things you have not confessed, I am safe. I have you, woman; I hold you by three things.” Things became serious. The poor woman began to feel ashamed and said, “Yes.” “Woman,” he told her, “I have you. I have you. How many long-distance telephone calls have you made and paid for as though they were local calls?”

Δεν συζητούμε για τον εργαζόμενο, δεν συζητούμε για τη μητέρα που έχει μικρό παιδί και δεν μπορεί να το πάρει να το σέρνει πρωί-πρωί έξω. Δεν συζητούμε για τους έχοντας ευλόγους λόγους. Δεν ξέρω αν έχετε ακούσει, όταν βγαίνουν τα Άγια: «Καὶ διὰ τοὺς δι' εὐλόγους αἰτίας ἀπολειφθέντας», για αυτούς που έχουν λόγους να μην είναι εκείνη την ώρα στην Εκκλησία ή να μην είναι καθόλου την ημέρα εκείνη στην Εκκλησία. Βγαίνουν και γι' αυτόν τα Άγια. Γίνεται και γι' αυτόν η προσευχή. Αλλά για τον άλλον, για εμένα, δεν χωράει. Στο έργο πηγαίνεις από την αρχή και το κοιτάζεις. Στο τραπέζι πας όταν... όχι όταν σηκώνουν τα πιάτα οι άλλοι· πας από την αρχή και κάθεσαι στο τραπέζι. Πώς στην Εκκλησία πηγαίνεις ό,τι ώρα θέλεις;
να βγάλει εργάτες και λοιπά. Έχεις δουλειά να κάνεις, λοιπόν, στην Εκκλησία που θα πας. Υπάρχει λόγος σοβαρός να πας. Έχεις να ωφεληθείς. Ό,τι δεν έκαμες όλη τη βδομάδα μπορείς να το κάνεις μέσα σε ένα τέταρτο, όταν πας σωστά πρωί στην Εκκλησία και συμμετάσχεις στην Εκκλησία και πας από αγάπη. Εν τούτοις, λέγω, σε αυτή την περίπτωση πολλοί μας... Εμείς δεν το κατορθώνουμε αυτό το πράγμα, δεν το κάνουμε, δεν το ξέρουμε ίσως, πει κανείς. Δεν έχω καμιά αντίρρηση, δεν δικάζω, απλώς ομιλώ, κηρύττω, υπενθυμίζω, και όποιος θέλει ας μαζέψει τώρα για να έχει για τον χειμώνα, διότι έτσι είναι τα πράγματα. Λέγω, λοιπόν, ότι ερωτώ: ερχόμεθα πρωί ή δεν ερχόμεθα πρωί στην Εκκλησία;
επισωρεύσαμε καθ' όλη την εβδομάδα στην εργασία μας. Τίποτα άλλο δεν προσέχουμε. Και τότε ο Χριστός πώς θα δώσει, που Αυτός κοιτάζει σε ποιον θα δώσει και κοιτάζει πόσο είναι καθαρό το δοχείο εκείνο, το δοχείο που θα βάλει μέσα αυτό που ζητάει; Ένας πατήρ, ξέρετε τι λέγει επάνω σε αυτή τη σκέψη; Ακούστε τι λέγει. Νομίζεις — θα το λέγω με απλά λόγια — νομίζεις πως μπορείς πραγματικά να γεμίσεις ένα δοχείο με καθαρό νερό προτού αδειάσεις το ακάθαρτο νερό που ήδη έχει μέσα; Είναι αλήθεια αυτό. Εμείς, όπως είναι το δοχείο, με όλη τη βρωμιά της εβδομάδος, ή και όχι της εβδομάδος, εβδομάδων, μηνών, ετών πολλών, χωρίς καμιά προετοιμασία να καθαρίσουμε το δοχείο, πάμε μέσα σε εκείνο το βρώμικο νερό που υπάρχει μέσα, επισωρευμένο, είτε από τα μάτια μπήκε, είτε από τα αυτιά μπήκε, είτε από τις αισθήσεις μπήκε, είτε από τη σάρκα μπήκε, είτε από το κατηγορείς μπήκε. Με χίλιους τρόπους, γιατί υπάρχουν, δεν ξέρω αν ξέρετε, δέκα θυρίδες στον άνθρωπο. Είναι τα πέντε ζεύγη, όπως λέγαμε κάποτε άλλοτε, τα οποία δουλεύουν και είναι οι αισθήσεις οι διπλές. Δυο αυτιά, δυο μάτια, δυο αφές, δυο οσφρήσεις, δυο γεύσεις κλπ. Εμείς, εργαζόμενοι αυτές τις πέντε αισθήσεις, τα πέντε ζευγάρια βόδια που λέγει η παραβολή, βρωμίζουμε τον εσωτερικό μας κόσμο. Και εν τούτοις το παίρνουμε αυτό το δοχείο όπως είναι και το πηγαίνουμε στην εκκλησία. Τι να βάλει αυτός ο Χριστός μέσα;
Ζωντανός νεκρός. Προσευχή, εν γενικές γραμμές, πρέπει να υπάρχει πάντοτε στον άνθρωπο, διότι παραμέληση της προσευχής ισοδυναμεί με εγκατάλειψη της σκοπιάς. Να το πω πάλι. Ακούστε. Παραμέληση της προσευχής ισοδυναμεί με εγκατάλειψη της σκοπιάς. Ξέρετε τι θα πει σκοπιά. Κάθεται ο στρατιώτης άγρυπνος στη σκοπιά και φυλάττει τα σύνορα και φυλάττει να δώσει το σήμα του κινδύνου στον στρατό, ο οποίος αναπαύεται. Όταν εγκαταλειφθεί η σκοπιά, ο άνθρωπος κινδυνεύει ή δεν κινδυνεύει;
