Summary
The lecture distinguishes nominal Christians from faithful members, insisting that church attendance must conform to God’s will rather than personal convenience. Christians are individually accountable before God and cannot excuse their disobedience by pointing to the failures of priests or other believers. Authentic worship also requires responsible family life, reverence for unborn life, peace with God and neighbor, forgiveness of enemies, and reconciliation before offering gifts or prayers.

You will remember that last night we said that, broadly speaking, Christians fall into three categories. The first is the largest. Although they call themselves Christians, they remain far from God and outside the Church, finding various excuses to justify their estrangement and their life outside the Church. We gave many examples of the reasons they use to justify remaining far from the Church.
There is also another category: those who attend Church, but on their own terms. It is not enough for a person simply to do something; he must also do it properly, as God wills. Doing something the way I want achieves nothing. I must do it as the One to whom I am addressing myself desires, and He reminds us in many ways what we ought to do. So if we were to examine this second category—those who come to Church—in relation to the purpose they come there to fulfil, we would find that it does not stand up to scrutiny. First, they come when they please, whenever they please, and at whatever point they please. As we said last night, this is not right. A person cannot come at whatever time he chooses unless he has a valid and justified reason. There are people who genuinely cannot come to Church at the proper time, although they wish to. But if we look among
those who attend Church, we will immediately find many who blaspheme. They blaspheme, yet they come to Church and light a candle. If you ask whether they believe, they will say that they do; indeed, they become indignant if you tell them that their blasphemy shows that they do not. And these are not only men. There are women who blaspheme as well. They curse and consign their children or other people to the devil, and there is even a delusion that someone who tells another person to go to the devil is not blaspheming. That is what is so ugly. That is the evil.
So, I tell you, among the congregation and the worshippers there are blasphemous people. Their prayer does not rise even above the chandelier, because sin stands in its way, and the result is nothing. Attending Church, then, is not enough, and we cannot count such a person among the faithful. There are others who also come to Church but spend the whole week stealing. They cheat with the scales, cheat with their measurements, misuse their bodies, or they have stolen and have never made restitution. They keep what they stole, what they acquired by wrongdoing.
They retain what they acquired unjustly, yet they attend Church and often light very large candles. They are also foremost in supporting charitable causes and are esteemed by others, although God wants none of this, because it comes from injustice. And yet a great class of such people attends Church. In the Old Testament, specifically in the writings of David, we read: “Let not the oil of a sinner anoint my head.” If it were possible, we should never—never—ask such people for money, even for the best of causes, because doing so lulls them to sleep.
Because they have the opportunity to give whatever they give, they imagine that this settles everything else. That is wrong. Keep their money; and even if they offer it of their own accord, we should still say, “Keep it. We do not need it.” God has power, and the Saints have power. They will help us. In this way we may bring such a person to his senses, so that he understands that God does not want what he has done or is doing. We consider it an achievement if we manage to get two drachmas for some cause from a thick-necked gentleman, a miser, or whatever else he may be. That is wrong. It must not be done.
Satan will lull him to sleep. It is as though he had a toothache and the tooth were decayed, requiring extraction or deep treatment, while you merely gave him an aspirin to stop the pain. No, that must not be done. He must remain exposed to the pain, in the hope that he may come to his senses. There are many such people who attend Church and are counted among the worshippers, among the fullness of the Church, although in Christ’s eyes they are not members of the Church. Christ does not regard members who steal as His members, because His own commandment, written through the Holy Spirit, is: “You shall not steal.” He included it in the Ten Commandments. It is a specific commandment, and consequently these people are not active members of the Church. If you look for still others within this second category,
you will find liars, as we discussed the day before yesterday. Many people for whom lying is as commonplace as eating bread and cheese—whether they lie for gain, from habit, or to slander others—are considered members of the Church. They light candles and come to Church, but they have no true relationship with the Church. God wants a person to struggle so that his “Yes” is always “Yes” and his “No,” “No”; anything more than this is from the evil one. And yet, without even examining our tongue or considering how we conducted ourselves throughout the week, we go to Church simply because Sunday has come and we have the good custom of attending. We go without confessing and acknowledging that we used that precious instrument called the tongue
to serve the designs of the evil one rather than those of God. So there are whole sackfuls of such people—mark my words—inside the Church, even though outward appearances suggest the opposite. The outer crust makes them look like saintly people because they attend Church. Others found in this category—people who come and are not outside, far from the Church—are those who do not fast although they are able to. They abolish the fasts and invent a religion of their own. They even justify themselves and mock those who fast, calling them fools and finding passages of Scripture to support their case.
Some say that Christ declared, “What enters a person does no harm; what comes out does harm.” In this way they justify what is in their cooking pot and pamper their stomachs. Properly speaking, these people ought to be excommunicated; there are Canons of ecclesiastical law that excommunicate them, because fasting is a commandment of God Himself. Christ Himself instituted the Wednesday and Friday fasts, as we read in the Apostolic Constitutions, apart from the four hundred other references that exist. We are not speaking about people who cannot or should not fast. We are not speaking about them; they are exempt. We are speaking about those who are able to fast but remain indifferent, abolish fasting, and do not observe even Wednesdays and Fridays.
They do not observe the great fasting seasons either, the forty-day fasts, and yet they attend Church and have issued themselves a certificate declaring that everything is in order. But this certificate of their piety will be accepted nowhere, nor is it of any use. The purpose is not merely to attend Church. The purpose is also to do whatever is commanded by the One who is present in the Church, and the One present in the Church is strict about these matters. He is merciful toward the person who cannot fast, but strict toward the person who can and remains indifferent. I do not know your own condition or whether what I am saying applies to you. Examine it within yourselves.
Even when you have a legitimate right to relax the fast, do not decide the matter by yourselves and tell yourselves, “It does not matter; everything is fine.” No. Receive the blessing of your spiritual father and tell him about it, because this matter carries excommunication; otherwise you are excommunicated. There are Canons of ecclesiastical law that impose this. If you wish, read the sixty-first of the Apostolic Canons. There you will find everything I am telling you now. These things are not my own. They were not placed there arbitrarily; the Church has always held them. It makes no difference how we have chosen to treat them. It also makes no difference if certain people, even officials within the Church, do not fast. I will not answer for them. God will not
ask me to account for what the bishop did, what the priest did, what the chanter did, or what the sacristan did. He will ask me what I did. What did I do? What did you do? What did the two of us do? What did we do? What those others have done, or whatever else they may do, is not your concern. No one appointed you as their judge. You are a servant, and you will give an account. You personally stand answerable, and you will give an individual account. You cannot use another person’s faults to cover your own. Unfortunately, this way of thinking exists, and many say, “The priest eats meat, and he is going to tell me not to?” I remember an incident that I think I told you about one evening. Some people were travelling and stopped at a restaurant to eat. A coach had arrived shortly before them. It was during the Dormition Fast, and the waiter was saying:
“Order whatever you like; we also have food prepared without oil,” so that he could serve those who were fasting. One woman said, “The priest is eating, and I am supposed to fast?” So she did indeed order non-fasting food. When the meal was over, the priest paid and waited, because he had heard her. When she too had paid, he went over and took her by the hand. There were some rocks nearby, with the sea below. He took her and drew her toward him. “What is it, Father?” she asked. “You must follow me.” “Why? Where am I supposed to follow you?” “To the cliff.” “Do you think I am mad, that I would follow you to the cliff?” “You followed me in what I ate, yet you will not follow me to the cliff, where I am going to throw myself down?” She showed some sense then and was frightened by the cliff. But when it came to saying, “The priest is eating, so I…”—do you seriously say such things? Or have we forgotten that one day Christ will bring them all before us?
The priest followed the Old Calendar. His own fasting period had not yet begun, so he was eating with good reason. He was exempt from that fast.
The misconduct of others can never provide an excuse that covers our own faults. In the theology of ordinary people, we say, “Every lamb hangs by its own leg.” Christ will not hold me responsible for other people’s affairs, nor will He absolve me because of other people’s sins. Each person will pay for his own deeds and be judged for his own. Take a clear position. Are you ill? Speak with your spiritual father, and if necessary, eat even on Great Friday. Are you not ill? Then you will fast. Otherwise, you stand excommunicated by Christ. Consequently, a person who attends Church must take seriously the need to be consistent with
what the One in whom he believes commands. That is how I understand it. And yet there is a large category of people who attend Church but treat fasting with utter contempt—as though they had written it on the soles of their shoes, and not even new shoes, but old ones. Holy Scripture, the Ascension, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse, the Apocalypse, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Second Coming, the Annunciation—read the twenty-sixth chapter of Matthew, where the Mystical Supper took place, just as the Mystical Supper is celebrated now in the Church of the Orthodox.
Judas rose and left before they said the final dismissal, “Through the prayers of our holy fathers,” before they offered the concluding prayer of thanksgiving. And what happened? Satan entered into him. Let us not be deceived. When we rise to leave, we should know that the one stirring us up to go is the so-called other one, the master craftsman of evil. He is the one who draws us out of the Church—not only on Sundays and feast days, but even at Pascha, when he urges us to leave and hurry away to eat. Will we die if we eat the pie an hour later? It is the devil. And David said beforehand about those who leave
the Church, especially those who leave the celebration of the Resurrection, and so forth: “Thus shall the sinners perish before the face of God.” Thus they perish, he says; this is how sinners are lost. “Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered.” Christ our God has risen, and His enemies have fled. They may be holding Paschal candles, but they leave with those candles still in their hands. The devil drives them away. They are enemies of Christ. By my actions I prove that I do not want to remain for His Resurrection. We are afflicted by terrible ignorance in these matters. We have no understanding at all. But Christ does not compromise. As I told you one evening, even the state does not accept ignorance as an excuse. How, then, could Heaven accept ignorance? We are obliged to learn these things, because we pass through this life only once. We do not pass through it a second time.
There is no going back to make amends. We must learn these things now and put them into practice now. Many people, then, not only arrive late but also leave early. They ask for antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—or they leave without it, departing from the Church without any valid reason. They have not left an elderly father ill at home, nor a sickly child whom they must hurry back to; they have no need to receive the small blessing of the antidoron and leave. If reasons like these exist, no one will stop you. God blesses you. In certain services of many years, the Church even mentions those who have valid reasons—people who could remain only briefly and then had to leave. Christ blesses you. But those who have no such need and go out merely to
They go out merely to satisfy their stomachs, to smoke, or to attend to other things, imagining that they have fulfilled their purpose and that nothing more is required. Christ does not bless such people. They cannot be said to belong to the Church of Christ, even though they come to Church. So, as I was saying, there are many kinds of people who attend Church, yet it is as though they do not attend at all. Another category, which we discussed the day before yesterday, is those who gamble with cards. Do you have the right to gamble away the fruit of your sweat? Do you have the right to gamble away your children’s bread or a sick person’s medicine? Do you have that right? You have no right whatsoever. Yet after doing all this, you are present on Sunday and light your candle. But the Master does not forgive this. You must repent; you must change your life. Take care to preserve the money that God has enabled you to earn through your work and the sweat of your brow.
Can you do whatever you please with it? You have no such right. Some people think, “It belongs to me.” It does not belong to you at all. You are a steward. Just as a steward or cashier cannot take anything from the funds entrusted to him without producing the proper receipt and justification—for when he is brought before the prosecutor, the one who entrusted those things to him will demand an account—so Christ will demand an account from us. He will ask why our abundance did not meet another person’s need and make up for what he lacked. Our surplus must go toward another person’s need. Somewhere, someone is lacking. God has placed enough good things in the world for everyone, not merely for a few. Those who have the means must take responsibility and help bear
the other person’s burden. You must bear whatever you can: another person’s cross, his need, his illness, and so forth. What did I tell you one evening? When a little red bird saw the Cross of Christ and the crown of thorns, it flew up and perched upon Christ’s head. With its little beak, it tried to do whatever it could to help and ease the chafing of the thorns. That is what we too must do, however small we may be. We do not need to become Livanos, Onassis, or Croesus before we can help our fellow human beings. We already can help, but instead we squander our money and the fruit of our labor where we should not. And besides this evil, we create conflict and disorder in our homes, harming our children and our families.
Then there are the blasphemies we hear. Even if we ourselves do not blaspheme while gambling, the others do, and we share in their guilt. If we were not sitting there, perhaps that card game would never take place. If each person simply walked away, Christ would not be blasphemed.
It makes no difference that I do not blaspheme while I am gambling, if the other person does. Nor does it make any difference if I am the one who loses. I have no right to take another person’s money either. On what grounds? Where did I labor for it? Where is the command, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread”? Here there is scheming and theft. Gambling with cards is fraud. How can it be otherwise? Yet there you are with your little candle, lighting it and saying, “I am all right.” “It is Christmas,” you say, “or New Year’s Day,” as though Saint Basil himself were going to gamble with cards.
Have you ever found him doing that, so that you might imitate him? Or Christ? These are errors of our own making. Perhaps you consider me excessively strict and dogmatic. I accept that, but do not forget that when we go above, there is a particular toll-house for gambling, just as there is a toll-house for adultery, fornication, drunkenness, theft, and the rest. Then we shall discuss there how these matters truly stand. And yet this kind of person says, “Look, I go to my Church.” Yes, but you pay no attention to certain things to which you ought to pay attention. There is another large category. You see people coming to Church, but they refuse to have children. “Is Christ going to tell me when to have children? Do I not know for myself?” They light their candle and think this makes them worthy; they even pressure the priest to allow them to receive Holy Communion. The priest gives in, and they receive two or three times a year—not that they want to receive any more often. They might receive more frequently, but apparently they think nothing else is required.
“If the blind leads the blind,” Holy Scripture says, “both will fall into a pit.” There is profound darkness. In our homeland—and I do not know what happens here—eighty percent of couples, perhaps even ninety or ninety-nine percent, do not have children. Family after family has one child, two children, or none at all. And this is not because they lack necessities, but because they want luxuries. Others have enough to feed entire villages, yet they have only one child, and often not even one. The lady has no desire to spoil her figure. The gentleman does not want the burden of sitting beside her and helping during the night when the child becomes a cross to bear. But that is not how things should be. Nevertheless, these people attend Church, demand to receive Holy Communion, and are permitted to do so—many of them when they should not commune, because they are unfaithful to Christ.
There are legitimate reasons concerning the bearing of children, but they can be counted on one hand. As a general rule, people arrange their lives according to their own wishes and then wait to see what happens. They treat having children within Holy Matrimony as optional, something to be decided by their own judgment. Yet God did not give the woman to the man merely for pleasure. When God brought them together—when He acted as the one who led the bride to the bridegroom and brought Eve to Adam—He did not tell them, “Seek pleasure.” He said, “Be fruitful.” He blessed them. Their union was not blessed for fornication or adultery; He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply, and have dominion over the earth.” If you search the Old Testament, you will find families with thirty, forty, twenty-five, or seventy children.
But we have fashioned our own way and invented new theories. What grieves me—and I say this with pain—is that we believe we are in good standing and that God somehow owes us, rather than we owing Him. When we do what is right, we imagine that we have placed God under an obligation, instead of recognizing that it is our duty. It is everyone’s duty to do what is right. And look at what people have now made into their “children” in Greece.
Private cars have become their children; televisions have become their children; parquet floors and all kinds of other possessions have become their children. Children have been replaced. Every material possession comes before children. Before long, only little old people will be left down there, the result of what is now being done. When a person has only one child, besides all the other harm we shall suffer as a people and as a nation, consider our position beside the Turks, whose numbers are multiplying rapidly.
Consider also the other peoples who do not avoid having children. And you have seen how matters stood from the beginning. David could have sent Bathsheba to a doctor to dispose of the child and then remained at ease. He would not have needed to kill her husband to conceal his shame. But would that not have been cold-blooded murder? If children and unborn infants could cry out, every mother and every doctor involved would go mad from hearing them.
They would cry, “Why, cruel mother, are you killing me? Where are you? What have I done to you? How have I harmed you? Have you even seen me? Who might I become? Perhaps a scientist, an inventor, or a Saint. By what right do you kill me? For the sake of a piece of bread—bread eaten by mice, dogs, and birds that do not labor—will you destroy me, when Christ died for me as He died for you?” Will this leave us untouched? There are many beautiful and profound thoughts here, if only we were willing to pay attention to them. But we do not.
You see someone take the one or two children he already has and show no concern for any others, yet he still comes to Church. Let him ask Christ how Christ bore His Cross, and how he himself is to bear Christ. Let him ask that, and when we meet again, we shall speak of it. We have this same Christ here in Munich and the Rhineland, if only we will receive Him, humble ourselves, and ask Him for His strength, so that we may bear this cross. Continuing with these thoughts, there are other people who come to Church but receive nothing from the Church. These include people who will not even say good morning to one another—and there are many such people. A person must not enter the Church
without being at peace. Two kinds of peace are needed: earthly peace and heavenly peace. A person stands at a meeting point, with God above him and his neighbor before him. When the Church opens the curtain and the deacon raises the veil, he calls the people and says, “In peace let us pray to the Lord.” Then, immediately in the second petition, he says, “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” Yet for many people neither of these kinds of peace exists. And when there is no such peace with our fellow human beings and
with God, today’s prayer cannot take flight, reach its destination, come to rest, and return bearing a blessing upon us—that is, it cannot bring down divine grace upon us, as the Church expresses it so beautifully. Whenever there is a pause in the service, after the people have spoken and the priest is about to begin again, he starts with these words: “Again and again, in peace let us pray to the Lord.” From beginning to end, it is as though he were saying, “My good people, we are about to pray once more. In peace let us pray to the Lord.” Where there is no peace, prayer is not accepted. Yet we dress in our finest clothes and examine ourselves from front and back in the mirror to make sure that not a single hair is out of place.
We come and light a great candle, perhaps as tall as we are, while bitterness remains within us—bitterness toward our fellow human beings, our relatives, those closest to us, or other people in general. Our relationships are not good. God has spoken clearly, and it is written in the Law of the Gospel. Read chapters five, six, and seven of Matthew, where the Law of the Gospel is set forth. There you will find Him saying: When you are going to Church with your gift and remember there that someone has something against you—not that you have something against him, but that he has something against you—stop. Do not go inside. “But he is the one who has something against me!” Do not go inside. Leave your gift outside, He says.
Leave your offering, your kollyva, your candle, your sacramental wine, or your coin, and go find him. Go and find him. Settle the matter, be reconciled, and then return to offer your gift. Otherwise, it is not accepted. But when the Saturday of Souls comes, everyone brings kollyva to Church for the departed—whether they are at peace with God or not, and whether they are at peace with their neighbor or not. It is all for nothing. It is not accepted, because it comes from sinful hands, and “God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” If you remember, that is what the man who had formerly been blind said to the Jews in his defense. So this peace, this love, and this forgiveness are absent. For a Christian who lacks the strength to forget another person’s wrongdoing and forgive
the other person’s wrongdoing has not yet advanced spiritually. His Christianity is superficial and watered down. I do not ask you to love only the person who loves you, but the one who hates you. Christ said, “If you love those who love you, what grace is there for you?” I want you to love your enemy—the person you learn is accusing you, the person you see plotting against you. Place that person first, because he is in danger, and you must love him, for he is in danger of being lost. “My Christ, do not let him be lost because of me. Let me be diminished; do not hold these things against him.” We Christians have someone who leads the way for us. Who is he? The Protomartyr Stephen. Some people say, “But is that easy? Do you know what he has done to me? Do you know what comes out of that tongue? Do you know what they are plotting?” And so forth.
Do I know? I may not know, but I do know that Christ told us to forgive. That I know, because He Himself was the first to forgive. From upon His Cross, He found the opportunity to say to God the Father, “Father, do not hold this sin against them, for they know not what they do.” These people do not know what they are doing. If they truly knew, they would not do it. In the eyes of the Father, Christ found an excuse for them. People immediately say, “Well, He was Christ. Am I Christ?” No, you are not Christ. Agreed; then let us go further. Let us turn to the Protomartyr Stephen, whom we just mentioned. When they were stoning the Protomartyr Stephen, what did he say? He said, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” Do not record it against them.
Sometimes we say, “I bear him no malice. I am not taking him to court or persecuting him. I have left him to God.” Do you know what that means? It is a grave sin. You must not even leave him to God in that sense. When you say, “I have left him to God,” what you really mean is this: “I cannot put out his eye myself, because I am weak. He has influence and money, and he would crush me. So I am leaving him to God, so that God may put out his eye.” No. You must say, “Lord, he did nothing. I did it.” That is Christianity. Stephen said, “Do not count against them the sin of these people who are stoning me for the sake of Your name.” Was Stephen Christ? He was a human being. He was a deacon.
He served at tables, you know, providing food for widows and orphans. He was a human being like us. So forgiveness is possible. Yet we go to Church carrying all our poison within us. And we do not merely go to receive a little antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, and say, “Thank you.” People go and receive Holy Communion on the great feasts without first making peace with one another. Without making peace! Where are you going? Before whom are you presenting yourself? Before the great Peacemaker, who died upon the Cross and shed His blood to reconcile man with God. Yet you go before Him with your bitterness and poison, saying, “I will pursue him to the ends of the earth; I will hate him to my grave,” and so on—and then you open your mouth to receive Holy Communion.
What will you receive within yourself? Do you think you can mock Christ? Do you? This is why, Paul says in the eleventh chapter of First Corinthians, “many die.” This is why many die. This is why there are cancers and so many incurable afflictions and other illnesses that man cannot overcome: because we receive Holy Communion unworthily. That is why he says, “Let each man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” And then there is this matter of people refusing even to say good morning to one another, pursuing endless lawsuits, and so on and so forth, without making the slightest effort toward peace. Often the interests at stake are so small that the legal costs are many times greater, yet they keep pursuing the other person simply to ruin him. How easily they could say, “What are you taking from me? Ten?”
“Take the ten and leave me in peace.” Christ has told you, “If someone takes your coat, give him your jacket as well. If he takes your jacket, give him your shirt too.” Then walk away. This is why the people have coined the saying, “A bad settlement is better than a good lawsuit.” There is wisdom in that saying. A bad settlement, in which you paid and suffered a loss, is better than a lawsuit, because the lawsuit will leave you with enmity. You may win the case, but you will no longer exchange even a good morning with the other person. It is better to suffer materially, or only seemingly, and to let go of your pride as well, than to lose the peace you need in order to stand before Christ in the evening or before the Church on Sunday and say, “My God, have mercy on me also, a sinful man.”
But many people, including the kind I am speaking about now, take no notice of this. You see such a person coming into Church with the burden of malice strapped to his back like a pack saddle. He does not see it, and we do not see it, but Christ sees it. That person’s prayer is not accepted. His offerings are not accepted. His memorial services and Divine Liturgies are not accepted, because he must first be reconciled with God and with other people. Reconciliation with God comes through Holy Confession. When a man sins, he places a curtain between himself and Christ, like the veil in Solomon’s Temple. When Christ was crucified, He tore that veil open, and it became what is now called the Beautiful Gate, through which people pass into the Kingdom of Heaven.
When a person sins, therefore, he breaks communion with God. It is as though his telephone bill has not been paid: even if he tries to call the house next door, he cannot get through, because the exchange connecting them has not been paid and the line has been cut off. The same thing happens in our relationship with God. We may pray, offer incense to Him, or throw ourselves upon the ground—none of it avails. Remove the sin that stands between you and God. Repent and confess, so that the sin may be taken away; then come here, even without lighting a candle. I need nothing from you. What concerns me is that you remove the sin from between you and God. Since we bear such malice toward our fellow human beings and such hostility toward God—for that is what it is, whatever we may call it—sin stands before us as enmity. Whether the sin is carnal, driven by self-interest, born of pride, or anything else, we make ourselves enemies of God. We disregard Him, and so we cut ourselves off from Him. When there is someone we do not wish to see
before us, we raise a barrier, a wall, so that we cannot see him and he cannot see us. In exactly the same way, sin rises as a wall before every person, whether or not we are able to understand it. We may build that wall with our tongue, with our hand, with our flesh, or through blasphemy. I do not know in what way each of us erects it. Therefore, those who do not have good relations with their fellow human beings or with God weary themselves in vain by coming to Church. Continuing along this line of thought, there are other people who think they are Christians, yet may also belong to other groups—to unlawful organizations or even to other religions—for reasons of self-interest, pride, and so forth. But Christ chooses those who are entirely His own.
As the saying goes, two feet cannot fit into one shoe, nor two heads into one hat. “Either God or mammon.” Yet without examining the matter, and for worldly reasons, self-interest, and so forth, some people belong not only to the Church but also to outside movements that are worldly, satanic, and the like. We must be careful. Christ is jealous for His people; He wants them to belong entirely to Him, just as a bridegroom wants his bride to be completely dedicated, devoted, and given to him, and as the bride wants her bridegroom to be entirely hers and cannot share him with another. So it is with Christ. Christ is called jealous not out of malice, but for the sake of the person himself.
There are people who come to Church but do not pray. Why, then, have they come? Ask them why they came. They come to Church and do not pray. In the three hours they remain there, they do not say even one “Lord have mercy.” They do not bring before Christ any of their concerns—personal, family, social, or ecclesiastical. They do not say, “My Christ, now that we are all here today, I beg You, forgive me and illumine me. Illumine those who hold authority and stand at the head of the people. Guard them, because they are in danger. Open the eyes of those who cannot see. Reunite, I beg You, the married couples whose homes have been broken apart. Bring back the parents who abandoned their children.
Bring back, I beg You, the mothers who abandoned their families and went away. Protect the young.” Who will say such things? Who truly prays when he goes to Church? “I went and lit my candle,” he says. Really? And by doing that, have I placed God under an obligation? “Now You must put everything right for me, eh?” It is sheer foolishness.
A person should go to Church, if possible, early in the morning, before the priest begins the Proskomide. He should submit his name while the priest is preparing the offerings, so that the priest may commemorate his parents, his family, those who have left no one behind to remember them, the young, the clergy, monastics, the government, and everyone. He should pray for mercy and receive mercy himself, becoming a living member of the Church. Why do you go to Church? To show off your suit? Why would you go if not to pray? The Church is a house of prayer. Does David not say, “In the churches, bless God”? Yet people do not pray at all. Even if a small proportion—five percent—pray, that is hardly anything. It amounts to nothing.
For the most part, this happens through ignorance rather than malice. A person makes the effort to come, but he makes no inner struggle. Many times the priest says, “Through the prayers of our holy fathers,” and only then do they wake up. Their thoughts had been wandering. They were physically present in their suits, but in their minds they were traveling back to their homeland, back home, or thinking about where they would go that afternoon. They made no effort to gather the nous, the spiritual intellect, and hold it there so that it might speak with God. Yet this is a unique opportunity, when God Himself descends and changes the Holy Gifts. Still, this kind of participation is absent. When will such a person be corrected? When will he become a living member of the Church? At present he is merely something superfluous. He comes, gives his coin, and so forth—but when will he begin? He never wants to struggle and make a beginning himself. I will tell you of another sorrowful category of people who attend Church.
They attend the Mysteries, funerals, and memorial services, supposedly to pray. Yet some of them, with the help of the devil, have practiced sorcery against others. Do you know how many people are bound by what is called black magic? A great many. People suffer because of these servants of Satan, and yet those very people have the audacity to attend Church. People who have destroyed families and ruined lives still come to Church. You may say that the victims also bear some responsibility, because they never wished to live close to Christ, where neither sorcery nor anything else could touch them. The only people whom sorcery cannot touch are Christians—not Christians merely on their identity cards, but Christians who confess and receive Holy Communion.
No one can touch them. Even if all the sorcerers in the world and all the malice of Satan were to come against such a person, they could do nothing. Satan would approach only so far and then depart. If you wish, read the Life of Saint Justina and Saint Cyprian, and see what happened there. Even with all the legions commanded by the chief of demons present, he could not take hold of that young woman, because she had a living relationship with Christ. When you are united with Christ, Satan cannot approach. Sorcery affects insipid, halfhearted Christians—those who make the sign of the Cross from afar, while still clinging to their comfortable life, the flesh, fashion, and so forth. They deceive themselves. The devil will seize such people; sorcery and every other evil will affect them. But none of these things can touch true Christians.
This is the sorrowful thing: people use Satan’s help to take revenge upon the weaknesses of others. Those others may also bear responsibility, but the people who employ sorcery will pay for what they have done—and yet you see them attending Church. I do not have time to tell you about a shocking incident that took place out in Fyli, near Athens, which would show you what sorcery means, what Christ means, what the Church means, and what the blessing of water means in the Orthodox Church. So, as I was saying, there is also a proportion of such people. You see them holding their candles, even though they have committed their dark deeds. They have harmed this woman and that man through sorcery. Then there are also people who go to Church but remain without Holy Confession.
They remain like this for years—twenty years, thirty years, fifty years. And where are you going? To Church? What are you going there to do? To chant?
Do you understand that your sins, as I said earlier, hinder you? Neither your prayer, your candle, nor your kollyva—nothing you offer is accepted. Sin is a dividing line, and you yourself have placed it in front of you. How, then, can you go to Church? I remember once being on Oinousses, near Chios, where I was giving talks. There was a church warden there named Frangos, known as Old Frangos, who had served at the candle stand for fifty-five years. For fifty-five years Old Frangos had stood there. Yet he had never once confessed in his life, nor had he ever received Holy Communion. The people regarded him as a saint because he served on the church committee.
He was always there at the Church. Frangos was regarded as a pillar of the Church, yet he had no real relationship with the Church. He thought that he had placed Christ under an obligation to him. For fifty-five years the good God endured this and waited. I happened to be there and was giving talks. There was a Maritime Secondary School on Oinousses, funded by a local family, and they asked me to speak there. The school’s church was dedicated to the Three Holy Hierarchs and belonged to the main Church of Saint Nicholas in the town. As the church warden, Frangos came and took his place at the candle stand. During the three days I stayed there, I spoke at Saint Nicholas, and he heard what he heard.
An inner struggle began within him. He realized that until then he had done nothing. It was the feast of the Three Holy Hierarchs, and the Divine Liturgy and talk for the school were held that day. It seems his conscience finally reproached him. I remember that around midday a town crier went through the village with a loudspeaker, calling for the priest who had accompanied me. Old Frangos wanted him so that he could make his confession, and after fifty-five years he finally confessed. He could no longer bear the reproach within him. Two days later he died. He received Holy Communion and then died. Do not think such things are strange. Another vivid and deeply moving case I remember is this.
It happened at the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Chaidari, Athens. The church warden had served there for forty years, yet he had neither confessed nor received Holy Communion. I spoke there seven times. After the seventh talk, he frantically sought a spiritual father, confessed, and received Holy Communion. Ten days later he died. I will tell you of another astonishing case. I used to speak at the leprosy hospital in Agia Varvara before its gates were opened to visitors. Today the gates are open, and you can enter without danger. In those days there was danger, yet I still went and spoke there. It was during Great Lent, and I would go in the afternoons for the Salutations to the Theotokos and give talks.
The talks were held in the Church of the Holy Unmercenaries inside the leprosy hospital. One of the church wardens, an agronomist from Corfu, had lived there with leprosy for thirty-seven years. He was considered indispensable; he kept the Church running. Yet he had never received Holy Communion and had never made his confession. After hearing those talks, he confessed. Then, when the medicine that could make the patients test negative was discovered, he was the first to test negative and return to his homeland. What was especially striking was that God showed him mercy after his metanoia, his repentance, and Holy Confession. These are cases I have witnessed personally: people who were physically inside the Church.
People burdened with cartloads of sins, pride, and all the rest are regular churchgoers. But they will not also be citizens of God’s commonwealth unless they make good use of the opportunity given to them. Many people come to Church without ever going to confession, but they cannot be counted among the faithful. And finally, there are those who go to Church but do not receive Holy Communion. Then why do you go to Church? The central purpose of the Church’s worship is Holy Communion. The Divine Liturgy is celebrated so that the living—and on behalf of the departed—may partake. If no one receives, what is the purpose of your going? It is another matter if you are under a canon, a rule of prayer that keeps you from receiving. But if you have sins and refuse to give them up so that you may come and receive Holy Communion, that is your own fault.
Pay close attention to this. Here, then, is a second category of people who attend Church but might as well not be attending at all. There remains a third category: those who attend Church and do so rightly. But I cannot say anything about them now, because there is no time. We shall leave that subject until I return in a few days from Toronto—I leave tomorrow—and then we shall continue.

«Ό,τι θέλετε, και αλάδωτα φαγητά έχουμε», για να εξυπηρετήσει αυτούς οι οποίοι ενήστευαν. Και είπε μία: «Ο παπάς τρώει, κι εγώ θα νηστέψω;». Και πράγματι διέταξε αρτύσιμο. Όταν τελείωσε το φαγητό, πλήρωσε ο παπάς και περίμενε· το άκουσε ο παπάς. Κι όταν πλήρωσε κι αυτή, πάει και την πιάνει από το χέρι. Ήσανε κάτι βραχάκια εκεί και από κάτω ήταν θάλασσα. Την παίρνει, λοιπόν, την τραβάει κοντά του. Λέει: «Τι είναι, πάτερ;» «Να μ' ακολουθήσεις». «Για ποιο λόγο; Πού να σε ακολουθήσω;» «Στον βράχο». «Τρελάθηκα να σε ακολουθήσω στον βράχο;» «Στο φαΐ με ακολούθησες και δεν με ακολουθείς στον βράχο, που πρόκειται να πάω να πέσω;» Ήταν έξυπνη εκεί, σκιάχτηκε από τον βράχο. Το άλλο όμως, «ο παπάς τρώει, εγώ...». Σοβαρά τα λες αυτά τα πράγματα ή ξεχάσαμε ότι μια μέρα θα τα παρουσιάσει ο Χριστός αύριο;
Χρόνια, 20 χρόνια, 30 χρόνια, 50 χρόνια. Και πού πας; Στην Εκκλησία; Τι να κάνεις; Να ψάλλεις;
