Summary

Christ stands at the door of every human soul, offering His transforming light while waiting for each person to open freely. Opening the heart to Christ includes sharing His Eucharistic table, becoming united with Him, and receiving the promise of resurrection to eternal life. Many nominal Christians remain outside the life of the Church through unbelief, ignorance, pride, immoral living, or one-sided secular formation, making serious study of the faith essential.

We were together last night. You will remember that we concluded with this letter to the Bishop of Laodicea, sent by Christ through John. Toward the end there was a very important passage, namely: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Because it was late, we did not have the opportunity to dwell on it; our time was running out...

The hourglass was telling us that we had to stop. I wanted to spend more time on this passage, so, by way of completion, allow me this evening to say a few words about it before entering upon our main subject—whatever God grants us to say tonight. Christ is shown standing at a door: “I stand at the door and knock.” What is this door? We said a few words about it last night. The door is the soul of every human being. Christ stands outside and knocks at the human soul, saying, “Open to Me and let Me enter. It is for your good that I should come in.” It is indeed for our good that Christ should enter, because when Christ enters a person’s life,

everything changes. A person begins to see differently and correctly, because so long as he is without Christ, he does not see rightly. Christ is the true Light, who enlightens and sanctifies every person coming into the world. All the lights of the wisest human beings are like fireflies before the light of Christ. He is the One who gives us the right direction, revealing where we come from, why we have come, and where we are going. Without His light, a person wanders from the path.

A person comes to live here in this world, struggles and toils, often becomes wicked, and frequently dies before his time, because he has not understood why he came here. He does not belong to himself, but to Another, and he was created for another purpose. Yet many people do not open the door to Christ. Christ does not force it open. Although He made this door—we did not make it, my mother did not make it, and irrational nature did not make it; He, God, made it—He respects human freedom and free will. And so He simply stands there, discreetly knocking. He could break the door down. He could force it open. But no.

He does not do that. He wants the human person to cooperate in salvation. He wants us to desire Him. You saw how, when He wished to be born of a Virgin, the Archangel had to labor to bring the Most Holy Theotokos to say, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord,” so that the Annunciation might take place. He could not compel her. He could have said, “You will become the Theotokos, the God-bearer. I am not asking you; I am simply using you.” But He did not. The Archangel remained with her and spoke in many ways and tones, offering many reasons to help her say, “Yes, I accept.” When at last she was persuaded, she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. Let your word be fulfilled.” And from the moment she freely consented to the will of God, everything changed.

And all that followed took place, as you know. Christ’s knocking at every soul is therefore something very significant. If we have not yet opened our own soul to let Him enter, we must nevertheless have heard Him knocking many times. You see, God may speak to many of us through some event in our lives, yet we regard it as accidental. Others call it a coincidence and do not recognize it as a message from God. At times there may even be a tempest or a disaster. In its simple theology, the common folk say, “A visitation from God has come.” What does that mean? A message from God. God speaks and reminds the people, but they explain everything as merely natural.

They say, “The barometer indicated it.” But why did the barometer indicate it? For example, two years ago, when the rain caused that great disaster in Athens, why did that cloud travel from Zakynthos, as the meteorologists themselves tell us? The black cloud filled itself with water over Zakynthos, came to Athens, and poured out a deluge upon the city. Could it not find one other place to empty its waters? The meteorologists themselves later acknowledged that the cloud had left Zakynthos, drawn water from the sea, and come to pour it out over Athens. Why did it do that? Does a cloud have a mind? Who set it in motion? Who sent it? What is this irrational nature that can do such things? And so we fail to heed God’s messages, His divine warnings, which are sometimes directed to individuals, sometimes to families, and sometimes to everyone.

We call them accidents or natural events. We do not want to look more deeply, speak with God, and open the door so that He may enter and set these things in order for us. At the very moment God is speaking to us, we go to the card reader, the coffee-cup fortune-teller, or a medium to discover what is happening, although it is a message from God. There is a beautiful account in the Old Testament concerning what we are discussing. When the Prophet Samuel was a child, he heard a voice while sleeping. He would rise and go to the elder Eli, a venerable man advanced in years, and ask, “Did you call me?” “No, my child,” Eli would answer. “I did not call you. Go back to sleep.” The child returned to bed, but he heard the voice again and thought that Eli was calling him.

He rose and went back again. “Did you call me?” “No, my child. I told you, I did not call you. Go back to sleep.” It happened a third time. Once again he rose and went to Eli. From his experience, the elder understood that God was speaking to the child, and he told him, “Listen, go back to sleep. But if you hear the voice again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’” The child went back to bed and heard the voice again. Then he repeated the words Eli had taught him: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.” And indeed, God revealed to him a great prophecy about what was to happen—that Saul the king was to be removed and that other events would follow, which truly came to pass.

Whenever Christ knocks in some way at our door, we too should say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears. What do You wish to teach me through this? What do You wish to say to me through this visitation, through this illness, for example, or this earthquake, this war, this hostility, this lack of work, or whatever else it may be?” We could be greatly benefited. But we do not want Christ within us. Just as we avoid people whose way of life differs from ours because their very presence reproves us, so we do not want a relationship with Christ, because He does not agree with the way we live and does not bestow His blessing upon what we do.

That is precisely why we do not open the door to Christ, and Christ remains outside. He remains outside in the wind and rain, as we might say, or beneath the burning sun. But we should know that, sadly, if people do not open the door here and let Christ enter, then Christ will not open the door there for them to enter. Notice what He says: “When he opens, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Here in this life, a person must dine with Christ. Whoever sits here at Christ’s table with Christ gains the right to sit there with Christ in eternity. And that table...

at which Christ sits with His creature—you know what it is. It is the Holy Table, the altar. There Christ is offered and received, and people become one with Him. We should know that those who depart from this world before dining with Christ will find things rather difficult in the world to come. Therefore, a person must receive Christ here and now.

Do not imagine that these things are coincidences or accidents. Do not wait for God to force you. Do not expect God to make you good against your will. It is not that God is harmed by sins; sins harm you. God is not defiled by sin. The sun shining upon filth cannot be defiled by it, and neither can God be defiled by our sins. It is for my good, for our good, and for the good of the world to come to know Christ, be cleansed of sin, dine with Him, and become one with Him. Then a person will not fear that day and will possess a pledge that he too will rise one day, for Christ has said plainly: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” This is a pledge. When the Blood of Christ—the Blood of the risen Christ—is within a person’s blood, that person will also rise in the common Resurrection. Of course, when we say that he will rise, the unrighteous will also rise, the unbelievers will rise, and the whole world will rise. But one will rise to eternal and immortal life, while another will rise to be judged, condemned, and sent to Hell. One resurrection differs from another. Let me add one further point, and then the letter comes to its close.

I did not finish it last night because there was not enough time. It says: “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.” To the extent that a person overcomes the world, overcomes the flesh, overcomes his ego and self-interest, and overcomes the devil, Christ says, “I will grant him to sit with Me on the throne of God, just as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” I do not force you; I exhort you. Whoever has ears for hearing, and not merely for ornament, should pay attention to what the Spirit writes to the churches: that those within the Church must act rightly, take care to dine with Christ, open their hearts to Him, and...

say to Him, “Speak to me.” For Christ, my dear friends, as I have told you before, is not welcomed by people because He reproves their lawless way of life. But if a person were to say to Christ, “My Christ, I receive You, even if You tell me things entirely contrary to what I love, want, and desire—to what my flesh wants, what my worldly nature wants, and what my imagination wants. Only give me the strength to put Your words into action,” then matters would be different. A person does not possess that strength by himself. He sees that the doctor has given him medicine, but because it is bitter, he will not take it, even though he knows that gangrene will result. Christ wants to give him His own remedy and free him from his bondage, but he does not want it. Yet if he asks Christ for the strength to use it, since Christ possesses that strength, then everything changes. Without Christ we can do nothing. This is not some spiritual aspirin that we simply take.

With Christ beside us, we accept everything, for He Himself said, “Without Me you can do nothing.” Therefore, if anyone wishes to spend eternity with God, with Christ, with the Theotokos, and with the Saints, he is called to open his heart here and now. If he does not open it, he himself will be responsible. Consider the Annunciation. I repeat: God does not force the human person. He does not compel anyone to become good, nor does He keep anyone close to Himself by force. He wants us to come willingly. That is why He says, “Whoever desires to come after Me.” And that is why one of the Fathers of the Church tells us, “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” The One who made you without first asking you does not...

save you without asking you. He wants you to desire it. And so those who desire Christ, and desire Him more deeply than others do, receive greater blessings. Many are scandalized because John is called “the beloved disciple.” They say, “Does Christ show favoritism? Does He have friends and non-friends?” We often hear this from certain people. But that is not what it means. It was not that Christ first loved John more than the others. John loved Christ greatly, and for that reason Christ gave him much. Do you remember Satan’s scheme concerning Job? Satan said that Job loved God because God gave him blessings. “Let me take them away. Let me harm him, and You will see what happens—whether he will not blaspheme You.” But that was not the truth.

God gave to Job and protected him, not in order to make Job love Him, but because Job already loved Him; that was why God gave him these things. Here is the lofty mystery that we sometimes fail to grasp, and so we misunderstand God, imagining that even among His disciples He had personal favorites, loving some and not others. I thought these remarks might serve as a further reflection on what we said yesterday concerning this letter from Christ, sent through John to the Bishop of Laodicea. Now, as an addition to tonight’s talk, I would like to say a few things...

about three categories of people. Broadly speaking, people—and Christians in particular—may be divided into three large categories. The first consists of those who remain outside the Church. Their identity cards say they are Christians, but they remain outside the Church. Many are called Orthodox Christians merely because their parents had them baptized as a formality and because they were born into a society belonging to the Orthodox Church, but they are not Christians at all. This is a very large category. I do not know whether you are aware of approximately what percentage of those called Christians attend church: about ten percent.

Statistics show that some have a certain relationship with the Church, but only on their own terms, while just three percent attend church consciously and deliberately. Ninety percent either want nothing to do with the Church or accept it only in their own way. They tell the Church what it should do, instead of doing what the Church teaches and receiving what the Church offers. Thus, the largest category consists of those who remain outside the Church. Some, for example, remain outside because of unbelief. A man calls himself a Christian but does not believe in God. A Christian does not believe in Christ, does not believe in the Mysteries, does not believe in the clergy, believes in nothing—and yet he is called a Christian.

He is called an Orthodox Christian. Others remain outside the Church because of ignorance. Reason itself tells us that there should be no unbelievers.

We feel the need to hold on to something, especially in difficult moments. As you know, other peoples, who are not Christian, have fashioned a god for themselves. They believe in snakes, in cows, in the sun, in the moon—they believe and believe and believe. They feel the need to believe in something. Plutarch says, “I have found cities without coinage, without walls, and without many other things; but I have never found a city without God.” They had fashioned some kind of god for themselves. Today, of course, we find ourselves in a state of confusion concerning matters of faith, and this affects many people, especially young people, scientists, and others.

And this... The evils that are coming will be worse than anything I am speaking about tonight, because unbelief will now take the lecturer’s chair. It will enter the university and the world of learning—as it already has—and it will be preached from the podium, clothed with authority, supported by law, and so forth. Then will come humanity’s greatest disaster. Why will things be this way? Perhaps because of our sins. We never wanted this treasure of Christianity; we did not make use of it, and for that very reason it is being taken away from us. What Saint Paul says in Romans has come to pass: God gave us over to a reprobate mind, to do what is improper. But conditions will become severe, and events themselves will compel us, when we see everything and every value being lost, to return to Christ. Fortunately.

We still have time to see what is happening and to do something for our salvation. So, many remain outside the Church because of unbelief. A man sees the bell towers, sees the priests, sees people making the sign of the Cross, and his whole being recoils. If only all these things could be leveled and swept away, because they obstruct his plans! There are also people who remain outside through ignorance. They have never heard; they have never happened to meet people who know a few things and can speak to them. And we see that, if they are well disposed, as soon as you tell them a few things, they immediately begin to reflect and take a different position. This has happened many times, especially with young people who speak freely and compel us to respond.

When I answered their objections and offered sound arguments, they stopped and finally said, “Perhaps you are right.” They did not say, “You are right,” but, “Perhaps you are right.” Yet even that is something. It means the matter made them think, because they had never heard the other side. And certainly today, through the modern mass media, especially television, they pin us against the wall. They play the whole game in one direction. They do not let us answer. They tell us their views, we pay for it, and then they leave. The same happens on various programs: if you try to object, they cut off your telephone call. They accept no objection. “Sit down and listen while I tell you my views.” But I have an opinion too.

I too have read something; I too know something. No, you will not be allowed to say it. We will say only what we want to say. Do you understand what is happening to us? Perhaps not so much to us older people, who have already lived most of our lives, but to our little ones, who tomorrow will reach positions of authority and trample on us again. “That is what they taught me where I was sent. That is what they taught me.” You brought this thing into your home; I did not bring it. I call it the lemon box. And you all agree to it. As a tool, as a machine, it is something astonishing, a great benefit to mankind. But in the way it is used, it becomes harmful. This wonderful thing transports you to other worlds and brings the sciences, events, mysteries, and the whole world into the privacy of your home. Yet because many do not use it properly, it becomes an evil. That is the tragedy. The machine itself is not at fault; the metal is not to blame. The fault lies in the way it is used, just as with the telephone, the radio, and everything else. Ignorance, then, keeps many people outside the Church.

The State accepts no plea of ignorance of the law. Why go before the authorities and say, “I did not know”? You will still be punished. All the more, ignorance of the law is not permissible in matters of God and religion. We have a duty to learn. We will have to give an account; we cannot offer that excuse, because it was we who did not wish to learn. If you read the very first chapter of Joshua, you will find this divine command from God: “This book shall not depart from your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night.” You must read it, and your children must read it. A person must contend worthily for Christ and for God.

God does not make knowledge of Him difficult. Science belongs to God. What causes harm is this one-sided formation. If you load a boat on only one side, it will capsize; if you load an animal on only one side, it too will topple over. In the same way, we load our children—and ourselves—one-sidedly, with science, technical knowledge, athletics, and so on. A person occupies himself endlessly with material matters. What, then, will become of him as a whole person? What kind of fruit will he bear? What benefit will all this be to the person himself? All these people did not wish to learn about God. I do not know how God will arrange these matters. That is why I say that a person could investigate them, if he wished, while there is still time.

No one is forcing him; no one compels him, for he could delve more deeply. Yet because he insists on understanding everything through his own knowledge, he remains in ignorance. His pride will not let him lay down his ego, and he seeks everything through his own understanding. A young university student once asked his professor, “And God—where did God come from? Who made God? What is God?” The professor replied, “It is a vast subject, my child, and I must answer you another day.” The student thought this was an evasion because the professor did not tell him immediately what God is. But the professor invited him to his home. “Come to my house one afternoon,” he said, “and we shall discuss it.” The young man hurried there, left his hat in the cloakroom, and went inside. After a little while the professor said, “Bring me your hat.” The student brought it, and the professor placed it on the table.

The professor brought out two handkerchiefs and a towel. “Put them into the hat,” he said. The student did so. Then he brought out a bedsheet. “Put that into the hat as well.” “The sheet will not fit,” the student replied. “Try to put it in.” “It simply will not fit.” “So the hat holds only certain things and has a limited capacity?” “Yes,” he answered. “Your head also has a limited capacity,” said the professor. “It cannot contain God.” Unfortunately, in his pride, man insists on solving everything through his own knowledge. That is why he remains ignorant of these sublime matters, which are understood through faith. And if you remember, the first four or five talks I gave after we first came together concerned precisely these things—the many miracles all around us.

These miracles compel us to acknowledge that something is taking place in the depths and that something exists beyond what we can touch, see, hear, taste, or smell. Yet we want to force all these things within the limits of the five senses. Even angels cannot comprehend these mysteries. Angels cannot understand such things, and yet we demand that we should understand them. How easily we could approach these matters through faith and live a different kind of life! And you see that unbelievers and those who remain in ignorance are the hardest people in humanity. A true believing Christian has never been a criminal, has never been cruel, has never been a thief or an ordinary robber, and so forth. Such people are, for the most part, those who are far from God, whether knowingly or through ignorance.

Bear in mind that exceptions cannot be made into a rule. Thus, one large class of people remains outside the Church because of unbelief, and another large class because of ignorance. Within this broad group there is yet another category: those who remain outside because of a dissolute life. Their wayward life does not permit them to have any relationship with the Church. They are people devoted to the flesh and revelry. The priest rings the bell in the morning, and such a man is still in someone’s embrace. Or he is still drunk, or still dancing. He makes a spectacle of himself, because revelers imagine this is how they can unwind. Have someone photograph you while you are dancing, and then look at the picture yourself. You will ask, “What am I doing here? What have I become?”

“What am I? What am I doing here? What is all this? What purpose does it serve?” Many say, “I want to let off steam.” But have you truly relaxed? Is it true that you feel relieved, or do you feel even worse afterward? You have spent your entire week’s wages, upset your stomach, and in the morning need a bowl of tripe soup to recover. What have you achieved? How much harm have you done? Unfortunately, we are dissolute. We laugh when we ought to weep. We are like cicadas, singing as they die. That is what we are. These are people enslaved to sins of the flesh, and they do not want the Church, because the Church will tell them to tear down their unlawful bed, and they are not prepared to hear it. They want to hear nothing about the Church or about Christ.

When you remind such a man that what he is doing is wrong, he is not prepared to correct it—at least not yet. So he curses his father for calling him to get up in the morning. He curses his mother; he curses everyone. He speaks against the clergy, against preachers, against the Gospel, saying that it was neither written nor taught properly. He speaks against God and against everyone. Why? Because all these remind him that his life is not what it should be, that it is not right, and he refuses to change. These are people who remain far from the Church because of their dissolute lives. There are also people who—how shall I put it?—though endowed with reason, lose their relationship with the Church and with God because of irrational passions. Some do so because of gambling.

Playing cards. Fifty-two cards are enough to keep them pinned there, unwilling even to hear that Sunday is dawning or that a great feast is approaching. They remain chained to fifty-two little devils, cards in hand, playing the robber’s part. For a man sits down to gamble in order to win. And how does he seek to win? Unlawfully. The money does not come from his own labor; he is a robber seeking to plunder someone else. Many even work together, ensnare other foolish people, and take everything from them. What are they called? Robbers. Does that money belong to us? Are we entitled to it? On what grounds? And yet gambling is a very serious matter. If only people knew what a deck of cards truly meant.

If they knew what those playing cards contained and had any religious honor and sensitivity, they would never take them into their hands. They would not even allow them to form part of their home’s furnishings. You know, ladies today want to be considered modern and worldly. Just as they must have glassware, ovenproof dishes for cooking, and serving dishes, so they must also have a deck of cards, gaming chips, and green felt. It has now become part of the furniture, one of the comforts of the home. A respectable home is thought incomplete without a deck of cards. And you should know that, according to this story, the Jew who invented the deck intended the king to blaspheme God and the jack to blaspheme Christ.

The queen was meant to blaspheme and mock the Most Holy Theotokos, while the diamonds, swords, and clubs were meant to blaspheme the Cross. All these were devised, it is said, to hold these four sacred persons and things up to ridicule: the Precious Cross; the Most Holy Theotokos, represented by the queen; Christ, by the jack; and God the Father, by the king. And yet, how many insults against the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ, how much cheating, and how many blasphemies take place over those cards! How could such a person go to Church in the morning? They do not go on New Year’s Day or Christmas, no matter what the feast may be. The gambler forgets his home and his wife, and often women forget their husbands as well. For, you see, it has also become fashionable. A lady, in order to be considered...

...modern as well, must know how to play rummy, barbut, poker, and so forth. I am not speaking theologically at this moment; I am speaking practically. I myself was a gambler. I once spent four straight days at the card table: I sat down on Saturday night and got up on Wednesday afternoon. And I sat down to win, not merely to play. Consequently, I was a thief. Anyone who sits down to gamble is a thief, because no one sits down intending to lose; he sits down to win. And if he gets the chance to cheat, glimpse another player’s card, steal, and so forth, he will do it—no matter who he may be, even if he is Onassis. He does not hand over his money merely to throw it away at cards. So, if possible, those of you who have not taken up gambling, never touch it.

And if you are already caught by it, take care to free yourself.

Whenever there was a game, I did not eat at home. I never made the sign of the Cross at the table; I made it on the road as I hurried to arrive in time for a four-of-a-kind. No one can lecture me about this. The sermons I preach to you come from my own personal experience. I have worked perhaps eighteen different trades in my life, and I know how each kind of person thinks. No one can present himself to me as a saint when he is corrupt at heart. Gambling is an evil thing. And yet licenses are issued for it in our country; the State grants gambling licenses. Christ does not come down. He does not take up the whip. He does not take a sword and cut off people’s hands so that they cannot touch the cards. One Indian man cut off his own hand so that he would never gamble again.

Last year or the year before, I read that a man in India cut off his right hand so that he would no longer gamble. Perhaps this seems strange to you. It seemed strange to me as well. But I read it, and I am passing it on to you. Make of it what you will. But are these the only things? There are a thousand other things that keep people outside the Church and place them in this same category. There are all sorts of hobbies: “Sunday is my only chance to go hunting; Sunday is my only chance to go fishing.” Others are kept away by various sports, clubs, Scouting activities, other pursuits, or weddings—all outside the Church. The devil sets countless traps for a person in countless ways, but he is caught only if he is willing.

Many of us come from the countryside. You know, we set a trap to catch the fox, but the fox sees it, urinates on it, and walks away; the trap does not catch her. That Mistress Maria—the fox—teaches us a great deal. We human beings see the trap, hear about it, and know what it is, yet we still walk straight into it. In my own homeland, four families were ruined because of these weaknesses, and what happened to them has become a lesson for the whole region. Yet we still go where others have already met their ruin. A man says, “I’m going hunting,” even on a Sunday. Why? Why? How many have been killed while hunting on Sundays and feast days? How many have been killed? Even brothers have killed one another.

Hunting has claimed many victims here. Another man, through negligence—as I told you one evening—even killed a woman who was pregnant. It was a double killing. At Agios Konstantinos in Locris, a car carrying six hunters plunged into the sea, and they all drowned. It happened in the morning. Instead of taking the bend, the driver went straight into the sea, and they all drowned. Do you know how many victims there have been? Many hunters themselves would have to admit that the devil appeared to them, standing right before them. The hare was Satan. With the blast of the gun, they lost their hands, they lost their weapon—nothing was left. And still they carry on. Why? So they can bring home a bird, which many times they have not even killed themselves. Then, so that no one will know, they go to the market, buy frozen game—hares and other things—and bring it home. Go hunting some other day.

Do not go at the expense of your Sunday observance. Besides, if you could spend a morning in a car with a group of hunters and hear what they say—the foul language, what that enemy brings up from within them and puts into their mouths, their accusations against the clergy, against priests, bishops, and monks—you would be horrified. Another man goes and sits there for hours on end to catch a fish, when he could simply buy one here at the market. If you do it while you are on vacation, I understand—you want something to eat. But do not go at the expense of your soul. Do not go. Is it worth it? Do not spoil your children with bad habits. Watch over them carefully. Do not exchange the Church for anything.

I do not know what may be happening at that hour. But once the priest has begun with “Blessed is...,” a person must be present. Many people miss out on so much and suffer great spiritual loss, and they will realize it on that Day. Yet these things have somehow been clothed in the excuse, “Everyone does it.” What difference does it make if everyone does it? I will not do it. Christ will never ask me what the people in my neighborhood did; He will ask me what I did. Each person will have to give his own account. He will not answer for someone else; first of all, he will answer for himself. Why should it matter to me what another person does? Has not what is commonplace and worthless become fashionable? If I were to give you two sacks full of five-thousand-drachma notes...

And if I also give you a ten-dollar bill, which will you take—the sacks or the ten dollars? You will take the ten-dollar bill. The others are worthless occupation-era banknotes. So I am not concerned with what the world says or what the world does. And the reasons I have mentioned so far are not the only ones. There are many more that do not come to mind at this moment for me to present to you. I simply wanted to make the point that there is a large category of people who appear on paper to be Christians, and indeed Orthodox Christians, but in practice are not Christians at all; indeed, they are enemies of Christianity. Let me now turn, in the time I have left, to a second, different category. It is a category that...

To church. They do come to church, but they do it in their own way. “I go to church,” someone will tell you. Very well. When do you go to church? Let us begin with that claim: “You come to church.” Tell me, when do you go? Whenever you feel like it, eh? At whatever time suits you. When you are invited to a meal, you do not arrive whenever you please, but at the appointed time.

Would you go just as they are clearing away the plates? You are not a fool.

You do not go to a performance halfway through, nor do you arrive at the end. You do not go to a dance or a celebration at the end; you go from the beginning. Yet this is what a great many people do, though they have no valid excuse.

Some people come whenever they are able, because there is a group of people who want to answer the Church’s call but simply cannot arrive earlier. There is the mother who must care for her little children. There is the father who has just returned from work and needs an hour to rest, then get up, splash some water on his face, and come to Church—or take his family to Church by cart. There are circumstances that justify the faithful in arriving later. But there is also a large number of people who could come earlier and yet do not. And so we see the Church empty until the Doxology, and often until the reading of the Apostle, the Gospel, or even the Holy Gifts. For whom, then, were all those earlier prayers said?

All of that began in the morning, when the priest intoned, “Blessed is our God,” while we were still at home. It is true that the Church has many petitions: “for this person, for that person, for another.” But it has no prayer for those who have overslept—no prayer for those still asleep. It has many other petitions, but none for those who sleep in, and so the person misses out. Just as we are punctual in all our other commitments, all the more should we be punctual in attending church. A person cannot simply come whenever he pleases. As far as he is able, he should arrive on time and push himself a little. Yet, as you know, the alarm clock works every other day. Only on Sunday is it not set. Christ can wait.

The boss must not be able to say that I failed to punch my time card properly; Christ, though, can wait. That other man is a good man—and who said he was bad? Of course he is good. But what is to be done? Are we to handle spiritual matters however we please, while handling material obligations however others require? Can you deal with material obligations however you like? No, you must do what is required. How, then, can you deal with spiritual matters however you please? These are our own failings, and we have not put ourselves in order. We often see the father, even though he is tired, and the mother, and so on. The children come at the very end, simply to punch their card and show that they came. You see, spiritual formation plays a very important role in children. It must be carried out both through words and through prayer on our knees. Very often, our counsel will have greater effect if it...

Our counsel will often bear more fruit when it first passes through prayer on our knees. Once, a mother went weeping to her spiritual father. “Why are you crying?” he asked her. “How can I not cry, Father?” “How would I know? Tell me what is wrong.” “My child does not want me to speak to him about God.” “Then stop speaking to your child about God.” “Not you too! Are you telling me not to speak to my child about God? What am I supposed to do?” “Speak to God about your child. Do not speak to your child about God; speak to God about your child. Get down on your knees until your hands grow rough like a goat’s hooves and your feet become calloused. Offer your prayer and your metanoia—your repentance—and implore God, saying to Him…”

“…good things for Katina, Kyriaki, George, and the others as well.” And when God intervenes, you will see her come and wake you up in the morning. When we had recently returned from Israel, a woman faced a great temptation. One of her two daughters…

She said, “Mom”—this happened suddenly, on the very evening we had returned—“Mom, tonight I’m going to a party.” “What did you say, my daughter?” “I’m going to a party.” “Have you thought this through?” “I’ve thought it through very carefully.” “My child, don’t go. That place you’re going to is not for you. Don’t go.” “No, Mom. It’s at my sister’s; it’s at the bibliographer’s.”

“They’re my fellow students and so on. I’m going.” “And what will your father say when he comes home at midnight and you don’t return until two or three in the morning? However much I may want to cover for you, what will happen? There will be an uproar.” “I’m going.” And she stamped her heel. “Enough, Mom. I’ve made up my mind.” The young lady got ready, went outside, found a taxi, and disappeared. Her mother went and knelt before the icon shrine, and she began to pray. “Most Holy Theotokos, as You can see, I can do nothing. If You believe You can help in some way, please help. My words have no effect. You find some way.” And she remained there praying for an hour and fifteen minutes without getting up, weeping all the while.

Suddenly the door opened. The mother did not get up from where she was, nor did she ask which of the children it was. As she remained there, weeping, pleading, and lamenting, she felt a gentle, friendly tap on her back. Then she heard, “Mom, get up. I’ve come back.” It was the daughter who had left for the party. The daughter had returned. “Why did you come back, my child?” “It wasn’t the place for me, Mom. When I arrived and saw who was there, I left.” Who brought her back? Was it the daughter’s own reasoning? No—the Dark-Eyed Lady brought her back, the Most Holy Theotokos whom we blaspheme, some in word and deed, and others by their deeds. These holy Persons—our Most Holy Theotokos and our Christ—can change things. It is as though they have a little screwdriver: they turn people’s minds, both ours and those for whom we pray, those who need somehow to be moved. But we do not realize what personal power has been placed in our hands, and so we often fail to use it and find ourselves in the opposing camp. We could have put many things right through our prayer, and we could have helped in many situations. We could have helped our children far more, but we do not. Yet if we have not helped ourselves, how can we possibly help our children? “Be sanctified, and then sanctify others,” says Saint Gregory. “Be illumined, and then illumine others,” says Saint Gregory.

We ourselves do not know this power, and we are not at peace with the higher spiritual powers—with Christ, with the Theotokos, and with the Holy Spirit. So how can we possibly help those poor children? We take care that they do not get dirty, that they do not get hurt, that they do not fall ill, and that they lack nothing—and rightly so.

But we do not help them with their souls as we should, or as much as we should. And when they receive no help from that quarter either, what can you expect? Amid the malice and corruption in which our children live today, amid this scorching wind of unbelief and atheism, how can they possibly stand firm? To a great extent, they are endangered by our ignorance or our indifference. The child leaves for school, and the mother picks up the telephone to chat with her friend, instead of kneeling down and saying, “My Most Holy Theotokos, I could see my child as far as the corner; now I can no longer see him. I beg you”—clinging to the feet of the Most Holy Theotokos and pleading insistently with her. Yet if the child comes home at noon bleeding, or with his new clothes stained, she will be upset and make a great fuss. But if he comes home corrupted in soul, she does not see it; that does not concern her. This is why we have so many tragic situations, even though we could have prevented some of them and healed others. This is why I say: you see a mother or father coming to Church, while others do not come themselves yet want their children to go to Church. “Get up and go to Church.” “What about you, Mom? What about you, Dad? Why are you not going? What did you do last night? What do you believe? Do you not see that it is Sunday? Why do you not come? Why are you indifferent? I will go as long as I depend on you, but I will not go tomorrow, when I no longer depend on you.”

“If it were good and beneficial, we would go together—and you would go first. Since you do not go, I will go only as long as I depend on you. Once I no longer depend on you, I will not go.” Here is yet another sword now hanging over the heads of parents. Proper, sensible, and spiritual cooperation could be of great benefit in these matters. In any case, there is much more that could be said, but time does not permit us. We will stop here and, God willing, continue tomorrow evening.

Έρχονται όποια ώρα μπορέσουν, γιατί έχουμε μια κατηγορία ανθρώπων. Οι οποίοι, παρότι θέλουν να βρεθούν επίσης στο προσκλητήριο της Εκκλησίας, δεν το μπορούν. Είναι η μητέρα, θέλει να φροντίσει τα μωρά. Είναι ο πατέρας που ήρθε τώρα από τη δουλειά και θέλει μια ώρα να ξεκουραστεί και να σηκωθεί, να ρίξει λίγο νερό στο πρόσωπό του και να έρθει στην Εκκλησία, ή να πάει την οικογένεια με το κάρο στην Εκκλησία. Είναι κάτι περιπτώσεις που δικαιολογεί τους πιστούς να έρθουν αργότερα στην Εκκλησία. Αλλά είναι μια μεγάλη τάξη από αυτή την κατηγορία που μπορούσαν να έρθουν γρηγορότερα, αλλά δεν το ενεργούν, δεν το πράττουν. Και βλέπουμε την Εκκλησία μέχρι τη Δοξολογία, πολλές φορές μέχρι τον Απόστολο, μέχρι το Ευαγγέλιο, μέχρι τα Άγια, να είναι άδεια. Για ποιον ελέχθησαν;
