Summary

God does not punish sinners immediately but patiently gives them time to recognize their failure, repent, and return to Him. Satan approached Eve through the serpent, distorted God’s command, portrayed God as envious, and made sin appear attractive while concealing its painful consequences. God approached the fallen couple in the evening with gentle questions intended to awaken repentance, but Adam shifted responsibility instead of confessing his sin.

Continuing this evening with the thoughts we left off with, on the subjects we have discussed over so many evenings, I would like to add something that is needed, in one way or another, by everyone who is struggling—especially those who desire their salvation. You know, a person deceives himself because God does not catch him in the act when he sins. He certainly could, but He does not catch him in the act and send him immediately to judgment. Instead, He gives him time...

He refers his case, so to speak, for trial at the appointed time. Because of this, many people entertain the thought either that God does not exist or that He is powerless. But He does exist, beloved, and He does have the power. Yes, He exists and is almighty, but He is longsuffering, so that He may give a person the opportunity to see his failure and desire to return. God is not in a hurry as we are. He has patient endurance. His patient endurance has no limits. His forbearance has no limits, because if it did...

none of us should still be here at this hour. The longsuffering and goodness of God—which, according to Paul the Apostle, leads us to metanoia, to repentance, and helps us repent—is what should move us most deeply. We must never imagine that anything has somehow been erased merely through the passage of time. We may have forgotten what we have done, but God does not forget. I want those who do not know this to understand that every human deed has three scribes who record it. The first to take up his pen and write...

above all, a person's evil deeds, evil recollections, and generally his evil conduct, is Satan. The second scribe is our angel, the guardian of our soul, and the third is our conscience. Three record our evil deeds, while two record our good deeds. Satan does not record the good deeds; only the angel and the conscience do so. Satan records only the evil ones. Do you understand now? To pass through the Dardanelles on our way to Heaven, the ledgers containing these three records must be as thin as possible. And yet we become careless and forget.

Many people think that God forgets as well. But even if God were willing to forget, the devil does not. He appears there with his ledgers and written records and says, “At that time, in that place, he did this and that,” and so forth. “You are just.” What can the righteous God say? What would you have Him say—that He is a liar? He cannot. He must uphold the truth, and one day we will be punished. From the very beginning of humanity, then, a person can find in life this lesson concerning the goodness and longsuffering of God. From that time onward, God revealed how He regards sinful man. Nor does the lesson end there. If anyone studies the whole sequence from Genesis to the Apocalypse—from Genesis, the first book of Holy Scripture...

to the Apocalypse, the last book of Holy Scripture—he will repeatedly find our God ready and waiting for man to return. So do not imagine that this time given to us is merely something to pass or “kill.” Time is no master that must be killed. Time is precious. If there were some way for those in Hell to rise again, or if we could ask them, “What would you beg Christ to grant you?” they would say, “Raise me back into this world for two minutes, so that I may confess my sins.” Someone who lived fifty, eighty, or a hundred years now asks for two minutes, because he did not use all that longsuffering and goodness of God for what is good. Instead, he hid behind all kinds of excuses: “Although I want to, they will not let me...”

“I want to confess, but I cannot find a priest.” People invent a thousand excuses. They are all lies. If cancer strikes us, then I will show you what happens. Then you will see how both you and I manage to find what we need. But we have no measure by which to understand this. Nothing—not cancer, not even cholera—can be compared with sin. All the cancers in the world cannot equal even one single sin, because those diseases concern the body, which is mortal and will soon pass away, whereas sin concerns the soul and touches eternity. I would therefore like to bring before you an event from the Old Testament that has been with us since the foundation of the world, so that you may see how longsuffering God is. Of course, I will not merely bring it in as a passing reference or look for some way to introduce it. I will speak about the whole event, in which...

other moral lessons are also revealed, and I will come to the particular point where you will see how God acts and how man fails to make good use of God's longsuffering. Our lesson this evening, then, will concern God's conduct toward the first two human beings, as recorded in Genesis, the first book of Holy Scripture. Before me I have the second chapter, beginning specifically with verse fifteen. It says: “Then the Lord God took the man whom He had formed and placed him in the Paradise of delight, to cultivate and to guard it.” Eternal words: “to cultivate and to guard.” And is work not also from God? Even within Paradise there was work.

Pay attention: guarding presupposes an enemy, something evil, some kind of snare. “Be watchful; guard it.” Guard it from whom? “Are there not only my wife and me? Is anyone else here? We are the only ones; there is nobody else.” But there is someone else. There is a third—the one we know. This passage speaks about him. I would like to remind you of him and expose my own condition, and you may do the same with yours if you wish. He is the only person who passes almost entirely unnoticed throughout our lives. He is the one who works on us from morning until evening and sets us against everyone and everything: the devil, about whom no one speaks. At most, people treat him like some errand boy and tell someone to go to him.

That is what they do. Yet Holy Scripture points directly to him from the very first days of man's appearance in the world. In any event: “And the Lord God commanded Adam, saying, ‘You may freely eat from every tree of Paradise’”—you may eat from all the trees—“but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat; for on the day you eat from it, you shall surely die.” Everything is perfectly clear. Christ deceives no one, as we deceive ourselves and those around us. Christ speaks the truth. God speaks the truth: this and this await you. You cannot say to Him, “I did not know.” Moreover, even human law accepts no plea of ignorance; how much less does the law of God accept ignorance as an excuse? A new law may sometimes have been enacted without our knowing it...

and that is understandable, because we are not lawyers who follow everything being passed into law. But the law of God is one and unchanging; it neither changes nor is altered. We have no right not to know it. We will receive the just recompense and will pay exactly as we were warned: “On the day you eat from the tree”—under penalty of death. Indeed, the words used here, “dying, you shall die,” seem to speak of two deaths. And in truth, since the Fall, man has suffered two kinds of death: spiritual death and bodily death. Bodily death will be healed. We will all rise again, whether we believe it or not.

Spiritual death, however, is not healed unless it is set right in this world. Because the hour of death is uncertain and our life here is unstable, we must remain cautious and spiritually prepared. Perhaps it will be today, perhaps tonight, perhaps tomorrow. Our ledgers must always be kept as ready as possible, because somewhere we will have to give an account. In any event, the commandment was not burdensome. Out of all the trees—suppose there were a thousand—nine hundred and ninety-nine were his, and only a single little branch was forbidden. It was not nine hundred and ninety-nine “noes” and one “yes,” but nine hundred and ninety-nine “yeses” and one “no.” Therefore, we must ask...

was the commandment burdensome, or was it possible to keep? God does not place upon a person a cross or a temptation beyond his strength. If we are tempted beyond measure, it comes from ourselves. We are the ones who create temptations that we cannot bear, and many times they drive people even to suicide. These temptations come upon us through our own choices; God did not lead us into them. In any event, further on it says: “And the two were naked, Adam and his wife, and they were not ashamed.” We should understand more generally that there were three kinds of trees in Paradise: trees from which they were permitted to eat and live, providing the food they needed; and one tree from which they were not to eat, so that they might continue to live well and not die.

There was also another tree in the center of Paradise, the tree of life, from which they would eat in order to live forever. Thus, there was a tree from which man could eat and live, a tree from which he must not eat lest he depart from life, and a tree from which he would eat and live eternally—but only after following the path God had appointed for him. Do not be hasty, O man; do not rush to do your own will. Walk along the path God has shown you, and you will suffer no harm. These, in essence, were the commandments given to the first man. And there man lived in Paradise—Paradise, that most pure garden, an orchard, a beautiful place. The serpent, Scripture says, was exceedingly cunning—not merely more cunning than the others, but exceedingly cunning.

The word is in the superlative degree: exceedingly cunning. In other words, it aroused no suspicion among “all the beasts upon the earth that the Lord God had made.” The devil chose this creature. He presents himself as an angel; he presented himself as wise to the first human beings. This is always how temptation comes, and this is always how sin comes. How does it appear? It does not appear as it truly is. It does not show us the tears that will come afterward. It does not appear with the pistols, knives, and graves that will so often follow later. It appears like an angel. Whether it is theft, fornication, adultery, or anything else you care to name, this is how it appears and how Satan presents it: wearing white gloves...

That is how Satan presents it. The serpent, Scripture says, was exceedingly cunning. Satan therefore used it to make contact with man. “And the serpent said to the woman.” Why did he speak to the woman and not to the couple together, or to the man? Here we find deception, delusion, conspiracy, and cunning. There are two of them, Adam and Eve, yet she is alone. He does not approach while the two are together, but waits until they are separated. Moreover, he considered the woman the weaker point. He approached her and contrived matters so that one would become two, and the two would become one.

He succeeded in winning Eve over, and then the two of them together consumed Adam. This is one of Satan's devices, and one can also read about it and see it in what happened to Job. If you remember, although Satan had received permission from God to destroy everything Job had—he killed the children and the servants, demolished the houses, and left Job destitute—he did not destroy Mrs. Job. He kept her in reserve. Then, through her, he appeared and said to Job, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Blaspheme God and die.” If you tell me to blaspheme God so that I may live, I can understand what benefit you think I would gain. But if I blaspheme Him and die, what benefit is there for me? There is none for me. The benefit belongs to the one who spared me and did not kill me.

He had made a wager with God that Job would one day blaspheme Him. These are devices that man—so cunning today from the moment he leaves his cradle—must not remain ignorant of or fail to watch for. In any event, the passage continues: “And he said”—forgive me—“the serpent said to the woman, ‘Why has God said, “You shall not eat from every tree of Paradise”?’” Satan is not present everywhere and did not know what God and the first human beings had discussed. So he cast out a deceitful question to discover where he could gain a foothold. “Is it really true,” he says, “that He told you not to eat anything at all and to sit here starving?” Eve had never encountered evil before. She had known neither cunning nor anything other than straightforwardness.

So she explained the matter as it was. The woman said to the serpent: “We may eat from the fruit of the trees of Paradise”—we may eat, she says, from them all—“but concerning the fruit of the tree in the midst of Paradise, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” “No,” she says, “only that one is forbidden. Everything else is ours.” He seized upon this and began to distort the truth and slander God before His creature. “And the serpent said to the woman, ‘You shall not surely die.’” God says, “You shall die,” while the devil says, “You shall not die.” The same happens today. God tells us, “This punishment awaits you if you persist in this sin,” and so forth.

Yet we listen to Satan, or to one of Satan's instruments, telling us that things are not really so. In other words, he makes God out to be a liar. And he even offers a justification, because every sin is justified in advance. Before committing a sin, we justify to ourselves why we are going to commit it. It makes no difference that the excuse is often absurd and utterly groundless, unable to stand at all. What did the serpent say? “Do you know why He told you not to eat? ‘For God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.’” “You will become gods,” he says. “Because God is envious, He will not let you eat.” That is what he is saying. “You will not die at all; He forbids you to eat only because of His envy.”

So he slanders God before man, portraying Him as envious. That is why he is called the devil—the slanderer. He took the name “devil” from this slander, though he does not accept it. If you hear him speak about himself or others like him, he will say, “we devils,” using a form that avoids the word’s connection with slander. He does not want any discussion of slander. Pay attention to this, and you will see that I am right: he committed this deception, yet he wants to cast off the responsibility and accuse God before His own creature. Eve could have discussed the matter...

with her husband, whom Satan had deliberately isolated so that he would not be with her. Before she rushed to examine the tree, before desire for it arose within her, before she went and took its fruit on her own authority and ate, drawing her husband in as well, she could have discussed the matter. This is a snare into which many fall: they do not disclose their logismoi, their intrusive thoughts, especially to spiritually experienced people, whether a father confessor or another discerning spiritual person. And so they are led astray; they conceal the intrusive thought. Satan relies on this. He catches them, binds them in chains, and leads them into sin. Eve did not share her thought with her husband. She went forward alone, and “she saw,” Scripture says, “that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes.”

“And it was beautiful to contemplate; and she took of its fruit and ate.” Nor did she stop at eating it herself, but “she also gave some to her husband with her, and they ate.” What happened? Did they become gods? No. “Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.” Until then they had not known that they were naked, because the grace of God covered them, and they were not ashamed. As I read to you earlier, “the two were naked, Adam and his wife, and they were not ashamed.” But now they ran about, realizing that they were naked, and “they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” These were the results. Instead of becoming gods, they began to tremble...

to feel ashamed, and to hide. They tried to cover their private parts because they were ashamed before one another—and with fig leaves, no less! Fig leaves! You can hardly touch one, let alone take a fig leaf, with its itching hairs and irritating sap, and place it on the most delicate parts of your body. They must have suffered terribly, and yet this is what happened. Scripture does not lie. The fig leaf is a type, a symbol, of sin. The itching and pain were the consequences of sin, because they did not enjoy what they had imagined they would. And here there is something beautiful that we ought to know. Eve, together with Adam, was the one who brought about our fall; then came the new Eve, our Most Holy Theotokos.

Where the first Eve disobeyed, the second obeyed; and where the first Adam disobeyed, the second Adam obeyed. When you see our Most Holy Theotokos and Christ on the iconostasis, see there, at the doorway, Eve and Adam, who shut that door against us—the door known as the Beautiful Gate. Then Christ came, was crucified on Golgotha, and opened the veil of the Temple for us. It was torn from top to bottom. Someone once asked, “How large was the opening made in that veil?” Another answered, “It was made large enough for even the greatest sinner in the world to pass through, because all of us must pass through there.”

In any case, I also want to show you once more the type, the symbol, of sin: the fig leaf. If you look at it, the fig leaf resembles a hand—Eve’s hand, which brought the itching wound of sin upon humanity. And what is our Most Holy Theotokos called in the ode? I find these words: “the true vine, who put forth the fruit of life.” What does a vine leaf look like? Open one out. There—it too is like a hand! The one is the hand of the old Eve, which brought sin, itching, pain, and all the rest into the world. The other is the hand of the Most Holy Theotokos: the vine and its leaf, also shaped like a palm, which we often use to soothe and cool the body, as a healing compress.

At Embeli you will find both the vine and the fig tree there. There you have the old Eve, and there the new Eve, who brings healing, who bore the ripe cluster of grapes and heals the sin of human life. Everything has its symbolism, and everything helps us attend to what we must learn from both nature and the spiritual life. Here I would also like you to notice something else. Married couples who are ready, at the slightest difficulty, to throw everything away, break up their home, and take opposing sides in every matter are making a grave mistake. They should have considered these things before entering Holy Matrimony—before their love affairs, and before leaving nothing untouched—not afterward. For sadly, we see people carrying on in love affairs and sin for five, ten, or fifteen years, living together without being crowned in Holy Matrimony, wandering here and there, while Satan reaps the profit.

Then they claim that their characters are incompatible. For fifteen years you did not notice that you were incompatible? And now that you are married, you complain that you cannot get along? Beforehand, Satan was harvesting, cutting with his sickle and putting the crop into his storehouse, into his sack. But now that you have come under the protection of the Church and Christ, he has torn you apart. He could not tolerate that. “But you know, he makes my life miserable; he is unfaithful,” one says—or perhaps the wife is unfaithful, and so forth. Whatever the situation may be, let that person come and read this verse. Let them come and read this verse. When Eve took the fruit, did she feel that she had lost grace? She ate, but she felt nothing. Why did she not feel it? Because Adam had not yet eaten, and Adam was the umbrella sheltering Eve. As soon as Adam also ate, the umbrella collapsed...

the blessing of their union was lost, and they saw that they were naked. Blessed, then, is the married couple who preserves this indirect sanctification. There is direct sanctification: when I receive Holy Communion, when I attend Church, when I pray. That is direct sanctification. But there is also indirect sanctification: “the two shall become one flesh.” God blessed you and united you. There are two bodies, yet one soul; two souls, yet joined in one body. Each blesses and sanctifies the other. That is why Paul writes in the seventh chapter of First Corinthians: “How do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? And how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband?” Take up your yoke, then, for that is why you are called spouses, yoked together. And when you drank from the little cup and smiled, that cup was the cup of tribulations.

Holy Matrimony is a great Mystery and, according to God, an indissoluble one. That is precisely why this is included in the service. And you know what is happening back in our homeland: automatic divorces, and that is the end of it; nothing remains standing; civil marriages, and so forth. These are simply a continuation of fornication and nothing else. Here, then, the point is clear: as long as Adam preserved his integrity, Eve had felt no change. But when Adam also ate, the protective covering—the grace—departed from the married couple, and the consequences we have heard about followed. Now, continuing this account of the Fall, I shall read verse eight of the third chapter of Genesis, which says: “And they heard...”

“the voice of the Lord God walking in Paradise in the evening.” In the evening—pay attention to that phrase. “And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of Paradise.” Where had You been since morning, Lord? According to the Fathers, the transgression took place in the morning.

This is what I told you at the beginning: God does not catch the sinner in the very act. It is not that He cannot or that He does not see. Rather, He respects the sinner’s freedom and desires his metanoia, his repentance and return. He could have caught Eve at the moment she stretched out her hand. He did not. He left her the whole day. It is as though this one day represents our entire life. He has let us go on and has continued to sustain us, though we have left nothing standing. We have respected neither honor nor morality, neither another person’s dignity nor God—nothing. And still He gives us bread, work, sunlight, oxygen—everything.

He waits. Evening came, and He left Adam to face his failure. Adam had not succeeded; he had failed. He had fashioned fig-leaf coverings, and then came the itching and the fear; he trembled. For Scripture continues: when God called to him, “Adam, Adam, where are you?” he answered, “I heard Your voice in Paradise, and I hid.” Why did you hide? “Have you perhaps eaten?” What a gentle phrase: “Have you perhaps eaten?” Or, “Did you eat from the tree I told you not to eat from?” God did not say, “Why did you eat, wicked man? Well, are you enjoying it now?” He asked, “Have you perhaps eaten?” He wanted to help Adam begin his metanoia, his repentance. After all, Adam had not succeeded; he had failed. A person must come to his senses, recognize that he has failed, and ask forgiveness. Adam did not do so. God waited.

That is the meaning of “in the evening.” The Fall, the sin, had taken place earlier, and they had seen that they had failed, yet they did not repent. This is the tragedy of man. In any case, pay attention to what it says here: “And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, ‘Adam, Adam, where are you?’ And he said to Him, ‘I heard Your voice as You walked in Paradise, and I was afraid because I am naked, and I hid.’ And God said to him, ‘Who told you that you were naked?’”

“Have you eaten from the one tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” Who told you that you were naked? Then you must have eaten from the tree from which I told you not to eat.

What follows is enough to make one weep, because of the answer Adam gave. But here I would also like to emphasize another point, as we shall see. If I read the earlier passage to you, you will see that Eve might ordinarily have been considered exempt from punishment. Eve herself had received no command from God concerning this prohibition. The prohibition had been given to Adam, not to Eve; nevertheless, the punishment includes Eve as well. And Eve accepts this without protesting. Through tradition, Eve knew what God had said to Adam, and it applied to her as well. Here we have an answer to the entire Protestant world...

and also to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who reject tradition. They say, “It is not in the Word of God.” But does the Word of God say that God spoke this command to Eve? Nevertheless, Eve was obliged to learn it from her husband and to take seriously what her husband told her, because it applied to her as well. In the same way, whatever God delivered—whether in writing through His Apostles or orally through them—has eternal authority. No one can tell us that there is no tradition and that these are merely human commandments, as they claim, because among the first human beings themselves we see the authority and power of faithfully observing tradition. In any case, when God asked Adam, “Have you perhaps eaten from it?” Adam replied, “The woman...”

“whom You gave to be with me—she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” In other words, he shifted the responsibility. Many people want to know whether they truly came from God or whether some ape produced them, and there is a great deal of discussion about it. Do you want to know where you come from? When a small child who knows nothing has done some mischief, ask him, “George, why did you do this?” What will he answer? “Grandfather did it. Katina did it.” He did not do it himself! When did the child learn these tricks of shifting responsibility? He is a little chip off the old block, a faithful follower of those who came before him. You do not need to be a scientist or conduct research in order to determine whether you come from an ape or whether you descend from Adam. Just approach a little child after some mischief...

and question him. His answer will tell you where he comes from. Shifting responsibility began with the first human beings. Unfortunately, we do the same today. “He made me do it. I was led astray. I did not know. They took me along. He forced me.” None of this is true; it is all lies. Someone suggested it to you, yes. Someone pointed it out to you, yes. But you liked it, turned it over again and again in your nous, your spiritual intellect, and then acted upon it. You took every necessary step. That is why you are guilty; you are not merely deceived. The first human beings chose to accuse God rather than themselves. Woe to the person who does not accuse himself. Woe to that person! Those of you who go to Holy Confession, pay attention to the way you confess, and you will see that your confession is false. You accuse many people...

your daughter-in-law, your neighbor, your colleague, the employee, the woman next door, and so forth. No. You must accuse yourself. Then your metanoia, your repentance, will be genuine. I remember the conduct of a poor Armenian Christian who sold trousers by hand. He carried several pairs of work trousers on his arm and went about trying to sell one now and then, so that he might earn something for himself and his household. One day, someone went to the priest whom he believed to be this man’s spiritual father and confessor and asked him, “Father, does so-and-so perhaps come to you for Holy Confession?” “Yes, he confesses to me,” the priest replied. “Have you ever asked him,” the man continued...

“How things are going in his home?” “I do not think so,” he replied. “Please listen. It is very sad. His wife beats him. In fact, if you see him in the next few days, you will see that his head has been split open. He is a simple, humble man, and he does not want to break up his family, though his wife often beats him. This time she has split his head open, and it is heavily bandaged—padded up, as we say. If by chance he comes during these days, please think of comforting the man during his confession, as God enlightens you.” “Thank you very much, my child,” the spiritual father said, and the other man left. Only a few days passed, and there he was, coming to confess, with his head indeed bandaged—and very heavily bandaged.

The spiritual father remembered what he had been told. During the confession, he approached the matter indirectly, as we might say, so as not to offend him. He tried to draw out something of the man’s pain and offer him a few words of comfort, based on what he had heard. So he said to him, “I do not think I have ever asked you: do you have a family?” “I do,” he replied. “Do you have many children?” “I have three,” he said, “two girls and a boy.” “And do you have a wife?” “Of course I do.” “Well, how are things between you? Do you live in harmony? Is there love in your home?” The man answered, “Father, I did not come to confess the sins of my wife or my children. I came to confess my own sins.” What a wonderful answer!

He could have spoken; he could have accused her and exposed what she had done. But he did not. That is the point. The Fathers say, “The wound is mine, and the injury is mine. I did it.” Satan did not do it. Satan suggested it; I liked it, and I carried it out. He suggested it, and I acted. That is why we will also go off together: “Go with the devil and his angels.” He kept telling you what to do, and you kept doing it. So there you are—together. Is God unjust? Was it not the devil whom you took as your counselor? Was it not he whom you obeyed in everything he said, especially when it contradicted God? Then there you are: you will go with him. Let us not accuse God of injustice. God is just, and according to how a person acts, thinks, and conducts his life here, he receives the corresponding reward. In how many cases, instead of humbling himself—

especially in the face of his failure, since success might naturally have made his nous, his spiritual intellect, dizzy with pride—what did man do? He blamed God and shifted the responsibility, saying, “It was not I. It was the woman—and above all, it was You, because You made such a wicked woman and brought this disaster upon me.” Then God turns to the woman, as the passage continues: “And the Lord said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’” In other words: Do you understand what you have done? And after He spoke to her about her own responsibility, “the woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’” And then, “The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle and above all the beasts of the earth; upon your breast and your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.’” Adam said, “The woman is to blame.” He turns to the woman: “What is this you have done?” “The serpent is to blame. We are not to blame. You made the serpent, and You made the woman—are You not to blame?” This is a terrible thing. The account lays it out beautifully; I do not know whether you noticed. Who caused the temptation to sin? Satan. Who allowed themselves to be led astray? Eve and Adam. Each one heard the judgment that concerned them. Before I continue—

I mentioned something that may have raised a question for some of you. Did God, then, hide death inside that tree? Would He do such a thing? Did man die spiritually and bodily because God had hidden death in the tree of knowledge? No. The tree itself was neither good nor evil. It was man’s act that brought death. One day man would have eaten from that tree, just as he would have eaten from the tree of life in the center of Paradise—but only when, in due time, God permitted him.

Death was not in the tree; it was in the disobedience. Disobedience is what caused the harm. That one tree was there to test man’s freedom and his gratitude toward God. But man trampled upon both. I will give you a simple example so that we may understand it better. Suppose we have a hamburger here, and there are only two of us: an adult and a baby. I eat one hamburger, and then the baby says, “Give me one too.” The baby eats it and dies. You gave it a hamburger—but what is wrong with a hamburger? Is a baby of that age able to eat one? So the hamburger is not to blame. The problem is that the baby rushed to eat it before the proper time. Man needed the appropriate preparation, and at the same time he needed to be tested—

to show whether, and to what extent, he accepted God as his Creator. So never allow yourselves to think that death was hidden in the tree and that an evil God placed it there to lure man into a trap. No. Death lay in the disobedience. God says no, and man says yes, relying on his own reasoning and feelings, imagining that he can reach the depths of God’s wisdom. Who can enter into the mind of God and understand how He thinks, or how He saves man?

How does He justify the sinner? How? Is it not madness, according to human reasoning, that He asks you for your sins so that He may give you Paradise? What person gathers up what is spoiled and worthless? Everyone seeks gold, silver, precious things, the wealthy and the honorable. We think we are wiser and know what is worth gathering. But God gathers whatever is filthy, because He does not ask for man’s good deeds. When He calls a person to metanoia, to repentance, and to confession, He does not ask him to report what good he has done. “Bring Me the evil you have done. I do not want your good deeds; keep them. What evil have you done? Bring that to Me.” Does this make sense according to human logic or mathematics? Where can such a thing be explained? Yet this is how it is. Strange things indeed! Therefore, we must never push our reasoning into matters that require faith and demand knowledge instead. This is mentioned by the Prophet and repeated in the Acts of the Apostles: “Come, you despisers, you who trample everything beneath your feet and subject everything to your own reasoning. Come, and let us discuss it. In what manner does God—”

“justify the ungodly? Come.” Man cannot answer, because this is how the goodness of God arranges all things. How did life come out of death? How did the Resurrection come out of the tomb? These are strange things. Even Satan himself did not grasp them. He too made a mistake; he too was deceived; he too failed in his attempt. In any case, I return to our subject, because I thought that point had been omitted and wanted to mention it. Let us return to the passage. With Satan now before Him—the one who had deceived them—God says, “Because you have done this, you shall be cursed above all cattle and above all the beasts of the earth; upon your breast and belly you shall go.”

“You shall eat dust all the days of your life,” as I read earlier. I do not know how the serpent moved before this. But since God now says that it will crawl upon its belly, perhaps it flew before; perhaps it moved in some other way. I do not know. In any case, this is presented as a punishment. God then continues and speaks the words we often repeat, the passage called the First Gospel, or Protoevangelium. After the Fall, after the mournful condition that had arisen within Paradise, God immediately gave a prophetic promise concerning what would come to pass because of this great evil.

When He said to Eve, “What is this you have done?”—

in simple words, we might render it: “Wretched woman, do you realize what you have done?” Take the Christmas tree that you put up at Christmas and shake it. Do you know where its roots are? In Paradise. Christ made the Christmas tree. Its root is in Paradise, in the words recorded here, in the fifteenth verse that follows. God then says to Satan, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman.” Here He speaks of a woman. Eve thought that she herself was the woman who would bear someone who would avenge her by crushing the head of Satan. That is why Eve named her first child Cain.

The name is interpreted as “acquisition”: “I have acquired the avenger.” But the child she had was a murderer. The prophecy concerned another woman. It concerned the Most Holy Theotokos, a woman who would come some five thousand five hundred years later and bring forth her seed. For the passage says, “between your seed and her seed.” A woman does not have seed in the ordinary manner, as we said on another evening; the seed comes from the man in natural conception. So the passage is speaking of a strange birth and a wondrous conception. “He”—the seed—“shall strike your head”; he will crush your head, “and you shall strike his heel”; you will bite his heel. This refers to His being crucified according to His human nature, for as God He cannot be crucified. His divinity—

The human nature of Jesus was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again. God does not die, nor does He undergo any of these things. So in this passage, after God had said to Satan everything that concerned him, He gave the prophecy of what was to come. And it truly came to pass, as Paul the Apostle writes in his Epistle to the Galatians. Indeed, it is the Scripture reading for Christmas, the passage that says: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.” Not of a man. Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and so on—not Sarah, not Rebecca, not Rachel. “Born of a woman, born under the Law.”

If you also pay attention to the first chapter of Matthew, to the genealogy, it begins, “Abraham begot Isaac,” and continues in the same way. Then, after David and after the deportation to Babylon, it reaches Joseph, the husband of Mary, and says, “of whom was born.” Until that point, the men were said to beget. But when the genealogy reaches Mary, it says, “of whom Christ was born.” Then it continues: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner.” And how was it? “When Mary had been betrothed, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.” Mary’s conception and childbearing were not like other conceptions. They were of a higher order. The foundation for this seedless conception is here, in the fifteenth verse of the third chapter of Genesis.

Humanity waited for this promise. The Church also symbolizes its final fulfillment at Pascha, when our priests come out carrying the Cross, with a candle behind it tied with a red ribbon. The devil saw the Cross and raised Christ upon it, but he did not see the Resurrection that would emerge from behind the Cross. That is why John Chrysostom mocks him so beautifully in his Catechetical Homily: “You took what you could see, and fell because of what you could not see. You took a body and encountered God. You took earth and met Heaven.”

Keep that in your heart. On the night of the Resurrection, read the Catechetical Homily of John Chrysostom, in which he mocks Satan. We remind Satan of this because he thought he had removed Christ from his path, raising Him upon the Cross through the Jews as though He were a lawbreaker. He could never imagine that Christ was God, because the Lord kept him guessing, revealing one thing and then what seemed to be its opposite. When the Lord said on Great Thursday, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death,” Satan thought, “What sort of God can He be, if He fears death?” But when he raised Him upon the Cross and the rocks began to split, with the earthquake and the darkness, he cried, “Come down!” “I am not coming down now. Now I will deal you the blow, and afterward I will come forth.”

Remember, all this had already been foretold here. Then God, out of His love for man, considered it fitting to have this promise written down and thus console him, showing that He had not forgotten him. For we might have gone to God and said, “Why am I to blame because Eve fell? What fault of mine is that?” And God answers, “I do not hold it against you. I Myself will be crucified and will give Paradise back to you freely, provided that you accept it.” We could have raised that objection today: “I was not to blame,” as some people say, “because Eve did all this out of curiosity,” and so on. But let us imagine ourselves in Eve’s place and consider whether we might have done something even worse, instead of accusing her now of putting us in this difficult condition. Christ, however, came into the world and sacrificed Himself. Through simple faith, He freely gives man this whole gift of Paradise—a ticket that takes him straight there, without having to descend anywhere.

Yet man does not want it, just as the first man did not want it. He may blame even this way of salvation, as the first human beings blamed God, or he may blame our first ancestors, especially Eve, who caused this harm. I remember reading a story related to this. Once, it is said, a king put on ordinary clothes and went out into the neighborhoods to see how his people were living. He came to a shack where an elderly couple lived, an old woman and her husband. The old woman was saying, “Ah, husband, that Eve ruined us and brought us to this state.” And she went on complaining about Eve. The king heard her, appeared at the door, and asked, “What are you saying?” “Well, my son,” she said, not knowing that he was the king, “we are sitting here lamenting our fate and what that Eve has reduced us to.” “What did she do to you?” “Her curiosity—”

“brought everything to this. She could not leave matters as they were. Otherwise, we would not have all these troubles today.” “Very well,” the king said. “Listen: do not blame Eve. I will take care of you. I will give you an apartment, food—everything, everything you need. Tomorrow I will send my servants. I am the king.” The old woman was dumbfounded. “My son—my king—what do I know?” she stammered, asking his pardon. The next day the king’s servants came, picked the couple up, and settled them in their new home. Once they were settled, the king placed a covered dish in the room. “Everything here is yours,” he said, “but do not touch this dish. From the moment you touch it, you will have to leave.” They remained there for several days, but then the old woman began: “Husband, what do you think is inside it?” “Leave it alone, woman.” She was quiet for a while. Then she said, “What could be inside? I am only wondering. No, no—I will not touch it, but I am just wondering.” Two or three days passed, and she started again.

“I wonder what could be under there.” “Come on, Grandma, didn’t I tell you to leave it alone? He’ll throw us out of here.” I will not go on at length, because there is no time. One day, out of curiosity, the old woman went over and lifted the dish to see what was underneath. There was a little mouse inside. In a flash, the mouse darted away. Two or three days later, the king came, saw the dish, and said, “So Eve was curious, was she? And you were not? Out you go.” Thank you.

In any case, let us stop here for tonight and, God willing, we shall continue.

εξετάσεις του, εάν και κατά πόσον δέχεται τον Θεό ως Δημιουργό. Μην αφήσετε λοιπόν ποτέ στο νου σας ότι εις το δέντρο υπήρχε ο θάνατος και τον έβαλε ο κακός Θεός να παρασύρει τον άνθρωπο, ενέδρευσε δηλαδή τον άνθρωπο. Όχι. Εις την παρακοήν. Ο Θεός λέγει όχι και ο άνθρωπος λέει ναι, με βάση τη λογική του, με βάση το συναίσθημά του, και νομίζει ότι μπορεί να φτάσει στα βάθη της σοφίας του Θεού. Ποιος μπορεί να μπει μέσα στη σκέψη του Θεού, πώς σκέπτεται ή πώς σώζει τον άνθρωπο;
