Summary

God’s patience must not be mistaken for forgetfulness, because unconfessed sins, injustices, and stolen goods still require repentance, confession, and restitution. The command not to eat is presented as the first law of fasting, while the Church’s fasting discipline recalls humanity’s expulsion from Paradise and trains believers in obedience. The Theotokos is portrayed as the new Eve whose obedience heals Eve’s disobedience and bears Christ, the fruit of life, for humanity’s restoration.

In our previous talks, we spoke about sin, about the healing of sin, and, more generally, about human sinfulness and the mercy of God.

There is something else I wanted to speak about this evening—something people commonly fail to notice, something that deceives them and can cause spiritual harm. Somehow, they fail to understand the forbearance, mercy, and goodness of God, and they are deceived by that very forbearance and goodness.

A person forgets his sins. He forgets what he owes, the harm he has caused, the evil he has done, and the words he has spoken in his life. He forgets how many people he has hurt and how many he has wronged or left weakened. As time passes, and because God has not yet punished him or taken him by the ear for something he once did, he forgets. He imagines that his account with God has now been settled, that God has forgotten it, or that the matter has grown old and rotted away. Here I would like to remind you that nothing disappears unless it is confessed. Nothing is erased and no debt is settled unless it is confessed and the wrong is put right. It has not been put right simply by saying, “I stole from you and wronged you; I repent and confess it.” I must also return what I took.

Does the fact that I confessed save me if I have not returned what I took? These are things God requires in His justice. Many of us, therefore, are deceived and remain clinging to our old sins because, as I said, God has not yet punished us. But He is waiting for us to return.

This is precisely what I would like to speak about this evening, by the grace of the Lord: to present some examples of God’s forbearance and show how God can endure a person’s entire life of sin, waiting even until the final moments for his metanoia, his repentance, and his return. In what follows, we shall also see how God places obstacles in the way of sin. He does not leave a person entirely unhindered in sinning. He reminds him that what he is doing is evil, that he is going against His will and His law. Yet God does not force him, and the person, exercising his freedom, charges ahead like a horse, pays no attention, and does whatever he wants. God, however, does all He can to hinder him without violating his freedom. He shows him, as we say, a red light: “What you are about to do is not right.” This begins beforehand, in the conscience. The first red light is the human conscience. It tells him, “What you are doing is not right,” while we look for excuses and ways to justify ourselves: “That is how the world is. That is life. We are still young. We have plenty of time,” and so on.

We try to override the voice of conscience crying out, “It is not lawful! You must not do this; you have no right to do it.” As I said, God, who gave man freedom, does not violate it. But He lights the red signal and tells him, “Do not do this; it is not right.” Yet He does not seize the murderer’s hand, the thief’s hand, or the adulterer’s hand, nor does He cut off another person’s legs. He reminds the person that what he is doing is wrong, but from that point onward the person remains free and misuses his freedom. I would therefore like to bring forward several examples from the foundation of the world, from the time when there were only two human beings on earth. What happens to us today happened then as well. Just as today we override the law of God, the voice of conscience, and the laws of the Church,

so too we override the laws of the state—everything—in order to have our own way. Schemes, fraud, forgery, and a thousand other things; cheating the tax authorities and the state—we do all kinds of things. This has been happening since the earliest days, with the first two human beings. I have the Old Testament here, and I shall read to you from it. The first passage I want to bring to your attention presents those first two human beings. I shall put it as simply as possible so that you can understand it. And for those who sometimes read, you may find it yourselves, if you wish, in the third chapter of Genesis. Creation has taken place, and God has told the first two human beings how they are to live: they are to work and to keep watch.

God made the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom; He made the spiritual realm, and last of all He fashioned man. He placed him in Paradise and told him to work it and keep it. Now a scene is presented: “Now the serpent”—it speaks of the serpent—“was the most cunning of all the animals of the field that the Lord God had made. And the serpent said to the woman, ‘Has God truly said that you must not eat from any tree in Paradise?’” Scripture says that the serpent was the most cunning creature in Paradise. Now the serpent speaks. Yet it is not merely the serpent speaking, but that other serpent, Satan, who entered the most cunning animal and spoke deceitfully.

Through deception, he seeks to discover what prohibitory command God had given when He fashioned Adam and told him, “You may eat from every tree in Paradise, but from this one you must not eat.” Satan is not present everywhere. I want you to know this, for perhaps one evening we shall have an opportunity to speak about Satan: Satan is not omnipresent. Omnipresence belongs only to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not even our Most Holy Theotokos is omnipresent, nor are the Saints omnipresent.

They exist in a particular place and time. They are here and not there; or there and not here. They may be there and there, but not here. If many people simultaneously call upon one and the same person, an angel of the Lord goes, as Saint Athanasius the Great says, and fulfills the other requests, acting in the place of the Theotokos or of the Saint. Here, then, Scripture says that this serpent, the most cunning of the animals in Paradise, spoke in order to draw out the truth. It said, “Did He tell you not to eat anything here?” Eve had never encountered temptation before; she had never encountered deceit.

She opened her heart and told him exactly what had happened: “And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat from the fruit of the trees of Paradise. But concerning the fruit of the tree in the midst of Paradise, God said: You shall not eat from it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” She spoke plainly and concealed nothing. She had never imagined such deceit or such a trap. Today, we have no excuse for becoming victims. Eve fell victim to her lack of watchfulness and to Satan’s deceit. We today know what the devil is. We know his traps and his temptations, yet we volunteer ourselves. For this reason, our punishment will be immeasurably greater. He is not speaking to little children. Today you see a three-year-old telling you things that Solomon himself did not say in his day. Today, then, we know all about both evil and good, yet we willingly do evil. In any case, she opened her heart and said, “He told us not to eat from this tree.” Satan seized upon that,

and upon it he built the ruin of humanity and the Crucifixion of God. The Crucifixion of God begins within Eden, when those two human beings and the devil are there. “And the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; you cannot die.’” God says, “If you eat, you will die.” But the serpent says, “You will not die,” and he supports his argument by slandering God: “For God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil.” In other words: “God is envious and deliberately refuses to let you eat from it, because when you do, you will become gods and your eyes will be opened.”

He slanders God before His own creature; this is why he is called the devil, the slanderer. The name “devil” comes from this: he portrays God as evil, jealous, and malicious, unwilling to let His creature become God. This is a lie. That very thing was what God desired—but He desired it at the proper time and in the proper order, not in reverse. Many people, when they hear this detail, say, “God truly was envious, since He placed death within that tree.” But death was not in the tree. Death was in disobedience. The wood, the tree itself, was neither good nor evil. It caused no harm. The harm would come through disobedience in its use.

Let me give you an example. Suppose I have a hamburger, and beside me is a baby one or two months old. I eat the hamburger, and it nourishes me, sustains me, and gives me pleasure. But if I give that same hamburger to the baby, the child will die within an hour. The baby cannot digest it; it needs milk. Is the hamburger at fault? No. The fault lies in our giving it to the baby and in the baby eating it too soon. The hamburger is not at fault; the fault lies in its use—its premature use. Man would have eaten from the tree of life and from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil when the proper time and order had come. He did not yet have the spiritual maturity to eat from that tree and bear what it gave. That is why he died.

Death, then, was not within the tree. The tree was neither good nor evil. As the divine John Chrysostom says so beautifully concerning this thought and this scene, God planted three kinds of trees in Paradise. From one kind Adam was to eat in order to live. From another kind he was not to eat; he was to abstain if he wished to live well and not die. He was not to eat from that tree. On the one hand, he would eat in order to live; on the other, he would abstain from this tree. By not eating, he would obey what God had told him. And he would eat from the tree in the center of Paradise, the tree of life, so that he might live forever. But man,

working together with the devil, rushed ahead and confused the whole order. He did the exact opposite of what God had told him. God told him not to eat, while the other told him to eat. Adam stands in the middle. God—your Fashioner and Creator—tells you not to eat. On the other side, the devil, the serpent, tells you to eat. Whom will you follow? Whom will you follow? You are free. Could Adam not have said no? Of course he could. Was he forced? Did the devil hold a gun on him? Did the devil himself cut the fruit, force open Adam’s mouth, put it inside, and chew it for him? He merely suggested something and slandered God to him, and Adam believed it. Why did he believe the slander? Was he not free to reject it? He could have said, “Why should I believe you? Who are you? He brought me from non-being into being. What have you ever done for me? I do not believe you.” But he did not do this. That is why man bears responsibility, even to this day.

Thus sin and freedom from sin are set before us. You do not read; if you did, you would be able to follow these things. Do you know what the final verses of the fifteenth chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach say? They say that God fashioned man and left him “in the hand of his own counsel.” He made him and left him free. “He has set before you fire and water”—that is, death and life—“and whichever you desire, you may stretch out your hand toward it,” so that you may also be responsible. Here are fire, death, and sin; here is life. In your freedom, you will stretch out your hand toward whichever you choose. “He has commanded no one to act impiously,” nor has He told anyone to commit impiety. “He has given no one permission to sin,” nor has He made it easy for anyone to sin.

Man, then, is placed in the middle, between life and death, Paradise and Hell, God and the devil. Yet man takes the side of the devil, Hell, and death, rather than the side of God. He misuses his freedom. Here Satan slandered God, and Eve was free to believe him or not. But what did he promise her? What did he tell her? That she would become God. What does he promise a young woman today? Some man promises to make her a princess, until he leaves her in such a state that not even the municipal rubbish cart will pick her up. What does Satan promise another person if he carries out some scheme or does this or that? Great and glorious things. The person sees them, likes them, and takes the side of this master craftsman of evil—with the results we all know. That is precisely what happened in this case. Man is a little god.

Satan struck precisely at the place where man is most vulnerable. What are God’s attributes? Have you ever considered them? He is all-wise, almighty, and eternal. And what is man; what does he seek? He wants to be almighty, able to govern everything at the press of a button. He wants to know everything and possess God’s perfect wisdom, and he never wants to die. These three qualities exist within man in seed form. Satan cast his hook precisely there, telling him, “You will become this immediately—an hour sooner.” Unwilling to follow the path God had shown him, man took another way and achieved the exact opposite. It is like what we and the market gardeners do when they use chemical treatments.

You see the produce acquire its color overnight—the cucumber and other things as well. These are not natural; they are contrary to nature, and that is why they are all worthless. They are not like produce that grows naturally, without chemical intervention. Something similar happened there. In any case, from that moment Eve’s thinking became cunning. She looked at that tree differently, with different eyes. “And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable because it gave knowledge. She took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to Adam, her husband who was with her, and he ate.”

“Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.” From that moment, she began to be enticed by that tree. Here, too, we find the institution of fasting. People who indulge their stomachs say:

“The priests invented it. Have you ever seen a priest fast? Apart from a few, most of them do not fast. The monks invented it.” No one ever made rules against his own stomach. We all take very good care of it, so do not tell lies. Nor were fasts invented to help sell the olives of Amfissa, as certain merchants claim. Fasting was given as the first commandment in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment. “You shall not eat” is the institution of fasting, says Saint Basil the Great. “On the day that you eat from the tree, you shall surely die.” God did not tell them not to walk along the path, not to sit beneath the tree, or not to look at it. He told them not to eat—to fast from that tree. And our Church gives us this same, very easy test during Cheesefare Week.

We deceivers even speak of a “last Meatfare Sunday.” How many Meatfare Sundays are there? There is only one. The other is not Meatfare; it is Cheesefare. You may eat everything except meat—all foods derived from animals, such as butter, cheese, milk, eggs, and so forth, but no meat. Meatfare has already taken place. Meatfare means, “Farewell to meat; we shall meet again on the night of the Resurrection.” There is no “last Meatfare Sunday.” It is Cheesefare Sunday, also called Cheese Sunday. Fish and cod are permitted, as are all animal products except meat. Why? For this very purpose. On what people call the last Meatfare Sunday, which is actually Cheesefare Sunday, do you know what the Church commemorates? She does not commemorate kites, outdoor feasts, dancing, masquerades, or carnival balls. She commemorates the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. Open the Triodion and read it. On Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, your soul will weep: Adam and Eve were cast out of Paradise. Why were they cast out?

Because of one food. So pay attention: “I permit you everything this week. There is only one thing you must not eat, because if you eat it, what befell the first two human beings who were cast out will await you as well”—and the Church commemorates their expulsion on Sunday. Do you understand? Everything has been established and set in order. Saint Basil the Great adds: “If Eve had fasted from the tree, we would not now need this fast.” If she had fasted, this whole calamity would not have happened, and we would not need to fast today. “Let us fast, therefore, that we may return to Paradise.” Let us fast where they failed to fast, so that we may return to Paradise. Fasting was instituted within Paradise, and all the things people say against it are foolish.

In any case, notice this as well: there were 999 yeses and only one no. “Everything is yours except this one thing.” The burden, then, was not heavy. If God had given me 999 noes and only one yes, I could understand saying, “Lord, I cannot manage all that.” But when He says, “Everything is yours except this,” what excuse can I have? Am I so weak? We cannot escape responsibility. There is also something here for married couples that usually passes unnoticed. Eve, it says, plucked the fruit and ate. Then she took some to Adam and gave it to him. They had not been together. When Satan spoke with Eve, she was not with Adam.

He got her alone, as we say. Satan was one, while they were two. He did not approach while they were together, when they could have looked at each other and exchanged their thoughts. “What do you think, Adam?” “I do not think this is right, Eve.” They would have discussed it, and Satan would not have led them astray. Avoid these secret invitations: “Come away from your father and mother; come away from your husband or wife; let the two of us talk privately.” Never enter into such private discussions; Satan will lead you astray. They were two, and he was one, so he did not attempt it then. But when Eve was alone in the garden, he approached her and succeeded in making his side two: the devil and Eve.

Adam was left alone. Now the two of them overcame Adam. This is how it always happens: one person works upon another—though we should influence one another toward what is good, not what is evil. Secondly, when Eve ate, did she become aware of her fall?

Did she recognize it? If she had recognized it—if the fall had already taken effect—she should have run to Adam as though she had been scalded, crying, “Oh, what has happened? How do you see yourself? This is how I now see myself!” But nothing happened then. Only when Adam also ate did they both realize that they were naked. This reveals the power of Holy Matrimony, which Satan has now undermined through instant divorces, adultery treated as acceptable, and all such things. “The two shall become one flesh.” The husband had still preserved his integrity. He was like an umbrella sheltering Eve. When he also ate, that protective covering fell away.

This is what is called indirect sanctification. I often hear women accusing their husbands, just as many husbands accuse their wives, saying that the other does not follow them in the faith, goes out, lives unlawfully, and so forth.

You are tearing down your own home; do not destroy it. If you manage to remain close to Christ, know that you bless your husband as well. And if you, the husband, remain close to Christ, know that you bless your wife as well. There is an indirect sanctification. Do not destroy your home. For your sake, the other is also watered by grace. Grace remains there; it does not depart.

This is exactly what Paul writes in the seventh chapter of his First Epistle to the Corinthians: “How do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife? And how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband?” Do not tear down your home. Grace does not depart. You impart an indirect sanctification to your spouse. As I said earlier, you hold the umbrella of grace over the other person as well, so that he or she may be able to return. This is what we see here in the first blessed couple created by God. God gave Adam his wife; Adam did not find her by himself. There were no other women then for him to search among, deciding which was beautiful, which was tall, which looked good in high heels, and so forth. None of that existed. As I told you yesterday, God gives the woman to the man and the man to the woman—provided, of course, that we allow Him. As the account continues, we are shown that they fell.

But did they repent? He had told them, “You will become gods,” yet now they found themselves naked, trembling like reeds and running away to hide. Surely that should have helped them turn back and come to metanoia, to repentance. They made coverings for themselves, it says, out of fig leaves. Do you know what lesson is contained here? Most of you come from rural areas and know that if a fig tree touches the skin, it causes terrible itching. If its milky sap touches us, we suffer from it. Imagine taking fig leaves and placing them over the most sensitive parts of your body. How long could you bear it? That is sin. This is what sin is: look at what a human being suffers because of sin.

What did Eve do? Through the fig tree she brought sin upon us. The fig leaf, then, produces the itching—the painful consequences of sin. Commit your sin as secretly as you please, and enjoy it as much as you like at that moment. Later you will spit upon that very sin, and you will pay for it.

I will pay for it. The rebuke and torment that follow will be worse than stinging nettles. You would rather place nettles against the most sensitive parts of your body day and night than have committed that sin. This is what Eve brought upon us. The new Eve, who healed the disobedience and sin of the first Eve, is our Most Holy Theotokos. Among her many titles, what else is the Most Holy Theotokos called? She is called the “true vine.”

“Rejoice, O true vine, who has brought forth the fruit of life.” The Most Holy Theotokos, the vine, came and healed Eve, the fig tree. Have you noticed the shape of a fig leaf? It resembles a human palm—the hand of Eve that brought sin. And have you seen how a vine leaf also resembles a palm, and how we sometimes use it as a soothing poultice against inflammation? It is the palm of the Most Holy Theotokos healing Eve’s sin. Have you ever seen a vineyard without a fig tree nearby? The two grow together. One reminds us of Eve and the catastrophe; the other reminds us of salvation and the Most Holy Theotokos. We could speak for a month about every single letter—not merely every verse or chapter, but every letter. In any case:

They hid, it says; they concealed themselves among the leaves and foliage. Then they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in Paradise toward evening. Here is the point I mentioned earlier: God does not forget; He is forbearing. It was toward evening. Since the account specifies evening, the sin must have occurred in the morning. They remained exposed to their failure throughout the whole day. They could have prepared their confession and found a few words to say: “My Lord, my Creator”—or whatever they called Him—“this is what happened to us. You told us what to do, but we were careless and did this instead. Forgive us. Is there any remedy? Can anything be done?”

Yet even though they remained in their fallen state, saw their nakedness, realized that they had not become gods, and understood that the deceiver had tricked them, did they come to metanoia, to repentance? They did not. They did not repent. That is the tragedy. God left them until evening—in other words, until life was drawing to its close. There are people who reach eighty or ninety years of age and say, “We shall see. At the end I will decide whether to go to Holy Confession.” And it is not a matter of one, two, or five sins, but of whole years. God waits. His account book is long. God is not in a hurry; His clock runs slowly. He does not rush as we do, anxious to move on to other tasks. He desires the salvation of the human person. “I do not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live.” He can endure a person’s sinfulness for a thousand years.

A person may continue sinning, and yet God still seeks his salvation and return. Here, then, God left them for the whole span of their life, as we might say—for the whole day. When evening came, He approached them, not to rebuke them or cast them out, but to help them once again, if they were willing to repent and be saved. Listen to what happened: “And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of Paradise. Then the Lord God called Adam and said to him, ‘Adam, Adam, where are you?’” Did God not know where he was? Of course He knew. Did He not know what had happened? Of course He knew. He could have caught Adam in the act that morning and carried him straight out of Paradise. He did not do so—just as He could catch us as well.

He could catch us in the very act of adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, dishonor, and every other sin. But He does not. He does not. He is more ashamed for us than we are for ourselves. He is gentle and dignified; He does not behave that way. He awakens the human person through his conscience, reminds him, and shows him the red light. He brings about other circumstances, permits a dream, a sermon, certain people or events, earthquakes, plagues, political upheavals, and many other things, in order to bring him back. God wants the person himself to desire and seek this return, even though God always desires it—day and night. Adam said, “I heard Your voice in Paradise, and I was afraid because I am naked.”

“So I hid.” Yet before the sin of disobedience, he had also been naked. He had not sewn anything. Our first parents had never sewn clothing. God Himself became the first tailor for the first-created human beings, for afterward He made garments of skin and clothed them. Until then they had been naked, but they were clothed in grace and felt no shame before one another. They were clothed in grace. When they sinned, they lost grace, saw their nakedness and uncleanness, and began to feel ashamed before each other. That is why they made coverings. Shame is given by God. Shame is meant to help us avoid sin.

Here, it is a matter of keeping what we call a sense of shame—in one’s face and in one’s bodily members. This covering must not be torn away; it must remain. This is something serious for the human person. In any case, God said to him, “Who told you that you were naked?” He is still helping him. He gives him an opportunity to begin a conversation of metanoia, of repentance. Listen to this further help: “Have you perhaps eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” There it was. Could he not have seized that opportunity and said, “Yes, that is what I did. Forgive me”? Could he not have done so? Of course he could. But he did not. What did he do? He stood there and accused God and Eve.

Adam said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me—she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” It is not my fault. It was the woman You gave me. I am innocent; do not hold me responsible. It appears that You are the one at fault, because You made this woman and brought ruin upon me. He indirectly accuses God. “The woman,” he says, “whom You gave me.” I did not choose her myself, so that You could hold me responsible and say, “You should have been more careful; you should not have taken her.” She is the woman You gave me. Thus he indirectly accuses God. Then the Lord God said to the woman. He turns to the woman and asks, “What is this that you have done?”

As we sometimes say, “Do you realize what you have done?” Do you know what Eve’s reaching out her hand toward the tree of knowledge was preparing for Great Friday? She was crucifying God. Speaking in ordinary human language, I would have said to her, “Wretched woman, what have you done at this moment? What has this hand brought about? What is this that you have done?” Yet she failed to understand. Let me bear the sin—why should you take sin upon yourself? What terrible deed did Eve commit? Did she fornicate, commit adultery, kill her children, steal, take another woman’s husband and the father of her children, or take another man’s wife and the mother of his children? No. She transgressed one commandment. She ate from the place where God had told her not to eat.

He says to us, “Do not eat,” and we become upset and go astray. We eat, we sin, and then we make a mockery of God: “Most Holy Theotokos, help me! Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” How can she help? To what extent do you and I bind her hands through sin? How can you help us, Most Holy Theotokos? In any case, the woman turns and says in her turn, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Each of them shifted the blame. Adam placed it upon Eve; Eve placed it upon the serpent; and together they placed it upon God, because God had made both Eve and the serpent. What do we do today? When we go to confess, do we accuse ourselves? “He made me do it. He told me to. He led me astray. He fooled me. He deceived me.” We shift the responsibility onto someone else.

We even put it on Satan: “That accursed one made me do it.” Did he make you do it, or did he merely suggest it? Did he force you? Did he seize you against your will? As I said earlier, did he pull out a gun and compel you to do one thing and then another? No. He suggested it to you, just as he suggested it to them then, just as he suggested it to Eve. She liked what she heard, stretched out her little hand, and crucified the hand of God—piercing it so that her own hand might be healed. This is how sins are committed. Never accuse anyone else. Accuse yourselves. Never shift your sins onto others, as though they were to blame. We ourselves are responsible. No one forced us. God waits for every human being to come to metanoia, to repentance. I repeat: He has given each person freedom both toward evil and toward good.

And when it comes to evil, He even sets up laws like red warning lights. He says, “No, no, no—be careful here.” He has not left the human person unguarded. “He placed a fence around him.” The Ten Commandments are like stakes all around the soul, strung with wire, keeping it safe within: “Do not steal; do not fornicate; do not commit adultery; do not, do not, do not.” What guards the garden called the soul on every side is the law of God and the commandments of God. When you go and pull out one of those stakes, the wolf will enter, the pig will enter, the dog will enter, the thief will enter and carry everything away. How did Judas become a traitor? How did it happen? It happened because he pulled out the stake that forbade theft. “He was a thief,” John says, “and he had the money box and took what was put into it.” How did a man become a murderer?

How did David become an adulterer? He removed the “do not” that forbids fornication. Therefore, when a person pulls out the stakes and says, “There is nothing wrong with this; there is nothing wrong with that; the other thing does not matter,” Satan enters through that opening and does his work within the person. He hardens the person, and the person shifts the responsibility onto someone else. One confessor handled this very well when a woman came and spoke at length against her husband: “And you know, Father, he has done this; and you know, he has done that; and you know, he has done something else.” She went on for half an hour, until his head was spinning. “And then, you know, my neighbor Penelope did this, that, and the other.” That went on for three quarters of an hour. “Have you finished?” he asked her. “I have finished.” She rose from the chair to kneel so that he could read the prayer of absolution over her. “What is your husband’s name?” he asked. “His name is George.” So the priest began to read a prayer, saying:

“O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you loose on earth, and whatever you bind…,’ loose also the sins of Your servant George and Your servant Penelope.” “But Father, Father, my name is Paraskevi!” There you have it! Do we go to accuse ourselves? No, we go to accuse others. Someone else may have suggested it to you, but you are the one who did it. He told you to go and steal—but why did you steal? At this point many people also accuse God, saying that God would be unjust if Satan is the one who induces us to sin, as he induced Adam and Eve. I do not know whether this question troubles you as well. So that Satan may not deceive us, I will tell you an incident.

Once there was a missionary who was speaking to Africans and saying many things about the devil and about him as a cause of sin, and so forth. One man suddenly stood up and said to him, “I do not believe that matters are as you say.” The missionary asked, “Why?” The man replied, “If Satan is the cause of evil, how can God hold me responsible and punish me?” The others also thought this was a good question. They had wondered about it themselves but had not thought to ask. The missionary then said to them, “Do you see that river over there?” The rivers there are navigable. “Yes,” they answered. “Do you see the boat moving along it?”

“We see it.” “And do you see the people in the boat?” “Yes, we see them too.” “If I tell you, ‘Go down to the bank, attack those people, kill them, and take everything they have in the boat,’ who should be brought to trial? I, who sent you, or you, who went and carried it out?” They stopped and considered the matter from every side. But they had to tell the truth. “I am asking you,” he said. “I sent you, but you were the ones who went. Who should now be punished? Who should go to prison?” At last someone answered, “Both of us should go—you for sending us, and we for going.” “God will do exactly the same,” the missionary said. “The devil spoke, and the human person acted. Therefore, depart with the devil and his angels.”

Be together with him. You were of no benefit to God—neither before the sin nor after the sin. You were of no benefit to Him in Jesus Christ. Do you understand? We see this in Adam and Eve from the very beginning. Shall I tell you something else here? Our learned people tell us that we descend from the ape, in order to reject God the Creator. Yet since they have no tails, they ought to show us their tails if they descend from apes. In any case, may God forgive me. What we see here shows that we do not descend from the ape. We do not. Look at this shifting of responsibility. Take a little child who has broken something. “Oh, little one, why did you do that?” “I did not do it. Grandpa did it. I did not do it. Little Katenitsa did it. I did not do it. Mama did it.” The child immediately shifts the responsibility, without ever having gone to school.

The child has not even gone out into the neighborhood, yet inwardly and automatically shifts the responsibility. He is a descendant of those first human beings: “The serpent deceived me; it was not I. Eve deceived me; it was not I.” This scene, if examined deeply, has much to teach us. Then “the Lord God said to the serpent.” He now placed all three in order: the serpent, who was the cause; Eve, the first to be led astray; and Adam, the third. The serpent then receives his rebuke: “Because you have done this”—because you have committed this act of sabotage—“cursed are you above all livestock and all the beasts of the field.”

“Upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.” It appears that the snake did not crawl before Satan used it as an instrument against the human person. Perhaps it flew; I do not know how. Once, in my own garden, I happened to see a long snake known as a saita. It shot past me like a bullet and pierced through leaves on a mulberry tree and other plants nearby. It moved like a bullet through the air. It had no wings, so I do not know how it flew. In any case, the words here indicate that it had not previously crawled as it does now.

It would eat dust, He says. What it ate before that, I do not know. And there is more:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel.” Here is something more. These are the events of Golgotha.

There will be enmity between you and your seed—sin in general—and the woman and her seed. From then on, there will be enmity. Who is the woman? I told you the other day, when we were speaking about the types of the Most Holy Theotokos. The woman is the Most Holy Theotokos.

A woman does not possess seed; the seed belongs to the man. Therefore, there is something extraordinary here. The Most Holy Theotokos gave birth without seed: “of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary.” No seed was sown in the Most Holy Theotokos. Christ came into being within her womb by a creative act of God, not through human seed.

Nor was He born of blood. What did the angel say to Joseph when he saw that Mary was pregnant and considered putting her away? What did he say?

“That which is conceived in her”—not that which is born from her—“is of the Holy Spirit.” That which came into being within her is of the Holy Spirit. “And she shall bring forth,” as I told you in another lesson. In the genealogies, it is the man who begets. Abraham begot Isaac; it does not say that Sarah begot him. Isaac begot Jacob; it does not say that Rebekah begot him. Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; it does not say that Rachel begot them. Here, then, it says that the seed of the woman will crush your head. This took place on Golgotha, while you will strike His heel. This refers to His being nailed to the Cross according to His human nature. As God, He cannot be nailed; as man, our Christ was nailed to the Cross.

Eve, who heard this threat against Satan, thought that she herself would be the woman who would give birth to the avenger. For this reason, she named her first child Cain, for Cain means “acquisition”: “I have acquired the one who will avenge us.” But it came to nothing. She was not that woman. The woman was the Most Holy Theotokos, whom God beheld in His wisdom, for she possessed nothing of her own but her one assent. We shall consider this in another lesson, if we have time. What happened here shows that Satan would be deceived. Do you remember how, from the Resurrection until Pentecost, the Orthodox priests come out to give the blessing? They hold a Cross in their hands.

Behind the Cross they have a lighted candle tied with a red ribbon. Do you know what this represents? It represents Satan’s delusion. Satan could see only as far as the Cross: he could see Christ being raised upon it. But behind the Cross he could not see the Resurrection, which brought about the crushing of his head. That is where his head was crushed. These events of which God speaks here are those that took place on Golgotha. This is also what is called the first Gospel, the first good news: that one day the Son of God, the seed of the woman, would come to crush the head of the serpent, Satan. And this took place on Golgotha with the coming of Christ. One more thing, and I shall finish. Then He turns to the woman. That was for you, Lord Devil. Now to the woman: “I will greatly multiply your sorrows.”

“And the pains of your childbearing. In sorrow you shall bring forth children, and your desire shall be for your husband.” And there you have feminism today, which has taken the woman away from her proper place and out of the home. The woman’s kingdom is the home. There she is the lady; there she is the queen. Whatever the queen chooses to offer outside the home is not...

...blessed by God. What are we doing, and what are we saying? We are ridiculous. When five—I do not know how many—million people down in India could not find one man to govern them, it was enough to make you weep. And in England, with so many millions and all those lords, they have a woman governing them. It is enough to make one weep for humanity. Here it says clearly that the woman is to obey the man, though of course the man must not exploit her. We fail to grasp these things. “In sorrow you shall bring forth children, and your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” The woman, it says, will give birth...

...to her children in pain. How would she have given birth before sin? Without pain. The woman would not have suffered when giving birth. Just as the Most Holy Theotokos did not suffer when she gave birth. “Before the pains of labor came upon her,” Isaiah says, “she gave birth to a male child.” Why did the Most Holy Theotokos give birth without pain? Because she conceived without pleasure. Where there is pleasure, there is also pain. Where there is no pleasure, there is no pain. And now the final word to our Adam. He turns to him and says: “Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed shall the ground be because of you. In sorrow you shall eat of its fruit all the days of your life. Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.”

“By the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread, until you return to the earth from which you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” What, then, have we found here? How God acts when man sins. He gives him time, He helps him toward metanoia—repentance—and He waits for him. But man persists in his own way. So God took hold of him and cast him out, just as He will cast us out, even though He shows forbearance while we continue without repenting and without returning to Him. That is all for tonight.

Εμείς οι ψευταράδες έχουμε και τελευταία Απόκρεω. Πόσες Απόκρεω; Είναι μία. Η άλλη δεν είναι Απόκρεω, είναι Τυροφάγου. Από όλα μπορείς να φας πλην του κρέατος. Όλα τα παράγωγα του κρέατος, βούτυρο, τυρί, γάλα, αβγά και λοιπά· κρέας όμως όχι. Έγινε η Απόκρεω. Η Απόκρεω πάει να πει: από το κρέας, χαίρε, κρέας, συνάντηση τη νύχτα της Αναστάσεως ξανά. Δεν υπάρχει τελευταία Απόκρεω. Είναι η Τυροφάγος, είναι η Τυρινή. Επιτρέπεται ψάρι, επιτρέπεται βακαλάος και όλα τα παράγωγα του κρέατος, πλην κρέατος. Γιατί; Για αυτή τη δουλειά. Διότι την τελευταία λεγομένη Απόκρεω, που είναι η Τυροφάγου, η Εκκλησία ξέρεις τι αναμιμνήσκεται; Δεν αναμιμνήσκεται τον αετό ούτε τα κούλουμα, ούτε τους χορούς, ούτε τα μασκαριλίκια, ούτε τα μπουρμπούλια. Αναμιμνήσκεται την έξωση του Αδάμ και της Εύας εκ του Παραδείσου. Ανοίχτε το Τριώδιο για να διαβάσετε. Το Σάββατο και την Κυριακή θα κλάψει η ψυχή σας, και τη Δευτέρα. Εξωσμένοι ο Αδάμ και η Εύα του Παραδείσου. Γιατί εξώστησαν;

Στο κακό μάλιστα του εμβάλλει και νόμους με κόκκινα. Του λέει: «Μη, μη, μη, μη· εδώ πρόσεχε». Δεν τον έχει αφήσει απεριφρούρητον. «Περιέθηκεν αὐτῷ φραγμόν». Ο Δεκάλογος είναι παλούκια γύρω γύρω, με σύρμα, που φυλάν την ψυχή του ανθρώπου μέσα. «Μη κλέψεις, μη πορνεύσεις, μη μοιχεύσεις, μη, μη, μη, μη, μη». Αυτό που φρουρεί γύρω γύρω το περιβόλι που λέγεται ψυχή είναι ο νόμος του Θεού και οι εντολές του Θεού. Όταν εσύ πας και βγάλεις το παλούκι, θα μπει μέσα ο λύκος, θα μπει μέσα το γουρουνάκι, θα μπει ο σκύλος, θα μπει ο κλέφτης και θα το πάρει. Πώς έγινε προδότης αυτός ο Ιούδας; Πώς έγινε; Έγινε διότι έβγαλε τον πάσσαλο της κλοπής. «Κλέπτης ἦν», λέει ο Ιωάννης, «καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον εἶχε καὶ τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν». Πώς έγινε φονεύς;

Ή εξ αιμάτων. Τι είπε ο άγγελος στον Ιωσήφ, όταν είδε τη Μαρία έγκυο και σκέφτεται να την απολύσει; Τι είπε;
