Summary

All glory belongs to God, whose mercy grants human life, strength, and time so they may be used for eternal good. Baptism gives spiritual rebirth, while Holy Communion nourishes and preserves that new life, making believers Christ’s brethren by grace and heirs of the Kingdom. The parable of the sower places responsibility for fruitlessness on the condition of the human heart, calling believers to receive God’s many-sided word as good soil.

So much should not have been said, because when a man speaks about Christ, he can only be presenting Christ, as far as he is able. Therefore, the same principle should apply as when the clouds bring rain. When the clouds bring rain, people do not applaud the clouds or thank them; they thank the One who sent them, who filled them with water and sent them to refresh the trees. And so glory, honor, veneration, thanksgiving, and worship—all these belong to the good God, who still bears with us.

I do not think that any of us believes he is alive because he deserves to be. That would be both ridiculous and utterly inconsistent. It is the love and compassion of God that grant us more years, health, strength, work, and everything else.

He gives us these things so that we may use them for good during our passage through this world. For although this world is but a fleeting vapor compared with eternity, what we do here nevertheless has consequences in eternity. When Paul came to Athens, to our homeland—

in the seventeenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles—

his first address to the Athenians, to our forefathers and ancestors, arose from the altar to an unknown God. Taking his cue from that, he said, “I will speak to you about this unknown God, whom you worship without knowing Him and whom I found numbered among your other objects of veneration.” He began with something belonging to them, with their own Athenian writings, as we would say, and then told them what he told them. We Greeks can read it in our own language, as I said, in the seventeenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. I too wanted to follow this method of teaching and use the short time your love has given me—

by beginning with your own texts here in your Church, here at Saint George—the victorious George, the horseman who hastens to meet every human need, provided people believe in his Christ. Directly above the Beautiful Gate, I read some words taken from the Gospel. They do not include the Scripture reference, though they ought to. But it is not too late; the reference can still be added. The words are these: “I am the vine; you are the branches.” I do not know how many years you have looked at this or read it, nor whether you have ever—

understood what it means or ever put it into practice.

It speaks about us and our relationship with Christ. Anyone who has no living, organic relationship with Christ should know that he is—if you will permit the expression—a walking cemetery. Do you know what this passage says next? “He who abides in the vine bears much fruit.” “I am the trunk,” He says. I trust that many of you understand vineyards, since I am speaking to you in these terms. “I am the vine, the trunk; you are the branches.” For a trunk to have branches, they must be joined to it. A branch cannot be understood as belonging to the vine when it has been cut off and no longer draws sap from the trunk.

A severed branch cannot say, “I am a branch of this trunk.” That simply does not work. The heart of Christianity is found in those words from the fifteenth chapter of John. There Christ compared Himself to the vine and its trunk, and human beings to the branches and shoots. He wanted them to abide in the vine, joined to the trunk and drawing its sap, so that they might bear much fruit. When a branch is no longer on the trunk but has been severed for one reason or another, knowingly or unknowingly, it withers and is thrown into the fire. The branch that bears no fruit is cut off from the vine and thrown into the fire.

Now I must ask myself, and each of you must ask yourself: Am I joined to the branch? Am I in the vine? Do we have any relationship with the root? Do we have any relationship with the trunk? Today I noticed that a few little children came and received Holy Communion; they entered into communion with the trunk, while the other branches remained as they were. Have we ever reflected on this? And yet John Chrysostom has already placed us in the dock: “You entered the church and thereby confessed yourself worthy.” We imagine it is enough to come and make an appearance before God, in the house of His Saint, Saint George, and light a candle.

Perhaps we also offer a few gifts and some money to help with work that, after all, concerns us as well, and we think that is everything. No; that is a mistake. As far as we can, let us make sure to correct it in the future. At the center of the Divine Liturgy, upon the Holy Altar, stands the Chalice. If a person does not establish a relationship with the Chalice—with this trunk from which he draws strength to bear fruit and put forth leaves—he is in danger. As for our bodies, the other aspect of the human person, we take care to feed and tend them three or four times a day, even five or six times. And we do well.

Otherwise the body will succumb to germs, illnesses, and the like, and it will give way. The very same thing happens to the human spirit. When a person’s red blood cells fall, he is constantly vulnerable to every kind of infection. And when the red blood cells of his soul fall because he receives no transfusion from the Blood of Christ, he draws none of the spirit—the wine—from the vine. Do you think it was by chance that Christ compared Himself to a vineyard, a vine trunk, grapes, wine, and so forth? No. And is it by chance that wine is used for Holy Communion rather than water or something else? Wine contains spirit; it contains alcohol—the spirit. This serves to remind the human person—

and such a reminder is helpful. In other words, Christ seeks by every means, both material and spiritual, to help the human person participate. Christ says clearly: “I am the bread of life. He who eats My flesh”—not he who eats at Pascha, not he who eats at Christmas, not he who eats at the Dormition fast—“he who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” This is a living, organic relationship between Christ and the faithful, like the relationship between a branch and the vine. That is precisely why the Mystical Supper stands at the center of the Beautiful Gate, with a vine springing from it.

Notice that a vine springs from it. The vine begins at the Mystical Supper. If, then, the branches and shoots have no relationship with the trunk, with the Mystical Supper, they will bear neither fruit nor leaves. For a person to live, just as a branch must live, he must remain upon the trunk. The branch must not be severed but must continually draw sap from it. In exactly the same way, a person must have a relationship with this center, which is the Holy Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist is not celebrated so that only the priest may receive Holy Communion. Nor is it celebrated so that only the little children may receive while the adults do not. For just as a little child is baptized and sanctified through the faith of the adults—

so the child receives Holy Communion and is sanctified through the faith and purity of the adults. When a mother brings her child to receive Holy Communion but does not receive herself, I do not know exactly what is happening. I do not wish to say what may be happening. It would be good for the little child to receive and for the mother to receive as well. Little by little, a person must come to understand this and make use of what the Church offers him. This, then, is the center: a way must be found for us to be united with Christ. For if this union does not take place at the Beautiful Gate, then woe to us. It will take place with God nowhere else. However good we may be, if life is absent from within us, we are like a young virgin adorned with every costly and precious thing—

in the world, yet lying dead inside a coffin. This is exactly what a person is like when he does not have life within him. The work of the Church is the union of Christ with the faithful, with the members of His Body. For a member to function and to grasp anything, it must be joined to the body, and the body must necessarily have its head. If, then, a person who is a member of the Church does not find the way that Christ, in His love for mankind, has left for him to communicate with the Head, who is Christ, is he not in some way already impaired? The threshold beneath the Beautiful Gate ought to be worn away; the stone there ought to be rubbed smooth by the Christians who approach to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

Holy Communion is not merely for wishing someone “many years,” my beloved. It is not a “golden little tooth” or “a treat,” as mothers who do not understand sometimes say before the Holy Chalice, coaxing their children to open their mouths and receive. It is the life of the human person. Today I heard the priest, who spoke with great doctrinal precision, say that a person’s rebirth is his Baptism. Yes—but the preservation of the soul reborn through Baptism is the other breast of the Church: the Holy Chalice. When a mother gives birth, she takes the child and brings it to her breast to keep it alive. When she plants something in a pot, she waters it to preserve it. So it is with the Church, which sprang from the pierced side of Christ. What came forth from Christ’s side?

Blood and water: Baptism and Holy Communion. The first Mystery gives life to a child who came into the world spiritually dead. “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” The child is born anew. Then the Church takes him from the Mystery of the baptismal font and brings him to her breast, which is the Holy Chalice. People should look upon the Holy Chalice as a healthy child looks upon its mother’s breast, longing to seize it and drink deeply. Yet we behave as though we were ill. “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” Does that mean we have no fear of God, no love, and no faith? Then why are we here? You understand where all this leads. That is why I would like you to pray.

Thank you. Let us understand this: if our union with Christ does not take place in this world, it will be impossible to meet Him rightly in the next. If we do meet Him, it will be from the opposite side, the side of darkness. For whether we believe it or not, whether we want it or not, one day we shall meet Christ. Either He will come in the fullness of His glory, or we shall go and knock at His door through death. There is no escaping this. Therefore, a person must take heed here, set himself right here, and be reconciled with Christ before the Beautiful Gate. Can you tell me why it is called the Beautiful Gate? Is it more beautiful than the doors to its left and right? Do you know what that opening there is? It is where reconciliation between man and God must take place, through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, our Mother: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”

Do you know who is there? Eve, the old Eve, who closed that door. That door was shut. And here the new Adam, Christ, took the place of the old Adam. Those first two, Adam and Eve, closed that door, and it remained shut. But it opened when Christ said to us, “It is finished,” on Golgotha. What was the first miracle? The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. This is the Beautiful Gate that was opened, and now man can enter into communion with God. Have you seen what is above the Holy Table, inside the apse? Have you seen it? It is the Platytera, the Most Holy Theotokos, who receives all people, she who contained the Uncontainable. Through there, then, man will pass by the intercessions of the Theotokos, and the Savior will save us. There will be offered...

...that which brings about man’s transformation. What is offered there? The Body and Blood of God. Why must man receive them? So that his own body and blood may also be transformed. What, then, will man become? What is the One whom he receives in Holy Communion? The One whom he receives is the King. And what will man become? He will become a royal child, since he eats and drinks of the King’s Blood. And why is this necessary? Why? Have you not heard that the inheritance is a kingdom? Have you never heard in the Gospel of the Judgment, “Come, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you”? Why should servants and laborers, friends, relatives, or brothers inherit the Kingdom? How could that be? It is royal children who must inherit a kingdom. When a king dies, ordinary subjects do not inherit...

...the princes inherit. To become a prince, a royal child, I must receive blood from the King. This is what Holy Communion does. It makes man a royal child; by grace it makes him Christ’s brother and, therefore, by grace a child of God. God has one Son. The inheritance belongs to one, to Christ. But all who receive Christ—“As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ”—and, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” Thus we too become Christ’s little brothers, little royal children who have the right to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. It is essential, then, that man go there and be united to the branch, united to the vine, continually drawing life from it, so that his blood may be transformed and, when the moment comes for him to be called or to depart, he may have a place in the Kingdom of God. That is why it is called the Beautiful Gate.

There, life is imparted to the dead man who possesses only natural life; spiritual life is given to him as well. There, man is transformed from carnal to spiritual, from temporal to eternal. That is why it is called the Beautiful Gate. Through it he enters. And for this reason, after the faithful have received Holy Communion, the priest, holding the same Chalice, says, “Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance.” Who are the heirs? Who are the inheritance? Those who received Holy Communion and entered into communion with Christ. The others are not His inheritance. Those who have entered into communion with Christ are heirs, provided they preserve that relationship and do not fall into sin for one reason or another. This is a fearful matter, and if man is unwilling...

...to be reconciled with Christ at the Beautiful Gate in this world, woe to him on the Day of Judgment. Since I have spoken to you about the appointments of the Church, whose symbolism, reminders, and teaching many people do not understand, I urge you to notice one particular thing. I do not know whether you have observed that all the icons on the iconostasis—of our Christ, of the Most Holy Theotokos, of the Honorable Forerunner, of the Saints, and so forth—have an oil lamp burning before them. But when we turn toward the bishop’s throne, we see Christ there without an oil lamp burning before Him. Why have you left Christ there without oil?

The Church has enough oil to place a lamp there. There is a reason for this; it teaches us something.

At the Beautiful Gate Christ is mercy: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us”; “Save us and have mercy on us”; “The servant of God, Thavma, receives the Body and Blood of Christ for the remission of sins and eternal life.”

Reconciliation. Reconciliation and mercy are there; over there, however, is judgment. Christ reminds you: “O man, if you are unwilling to be reconciled with Me here—to repent, to confess, to come so that I may give you My Body and Blood and we may be reconciled—one day you will face judgment, and judgment has no mercy.” This is what it reminds us of; that is why there is no lamp there. Go and look at a Byzantine icon of the Honorable Forerunner. At his feet you will see an axe, a hatchet. What is it? The justice of God. Today the justice of God is not acting against us. He allows us to enter the Church and do as we please.

We enter in our own way, with our sins and our own plans, and He permits us; here there is mercy. For no one has yet taken the justice of God in hand to strike. An axe, a pistol, or a sword must be taken up by someone before it can be used. It remains at rest; so it is with the justice of God. Yet today many people even misunderstand God and say, “Where is God? Does He not see the injustices? Does He not see all these things?” If God looked in that direction, He would also see your own injustices. And if He chose to cut off the hands, feet, and ears of others, He would first have had to cut off yours; it would have cost you many sets of them. The justice of God is not operating today. It is at rest, and this is what the axe laid at the root of the tree at the feet of the Honorable Forerunner reminds us of. Everything within the church, then, has a purpose.

These things remind us and teach us something. And now, during these years of God’s grace and forbearance, which lead us to metanoia, as Paul says, we must willingly seek reconciliation there where I have told you, at this Beautiful Gate. It is the little soul that departs from there for the Heavenly Kingdom. That is the road. “Always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.” When you see the Chalice being carried away, say, “My soul is drawing near, O Christ. You are departing, and my soul too is drawing near to You.” It is true, my beloved, from the little experience I have gained in these matters during the years of my ministry, that we are afflicted by profound ignorance concerning these vital things. If anyone should ever wish to speak...

...sternly, in the language of the Gospel, which does not wear white gloves but insists on speaking the truth—so that whatever is rotten may be removed and ignorance may be replaced by knowledge—then people say, “There is no love. God is love; God is this, God is that.” And who said that God is otherwise? That is exactly how He is: God is love. But take heed: God is not lame. God has two feet. In this world He is love and forbearance, but in the world to come He is justice. What does not act here acts beyond the grave. “You received,” He said, “O rich man, your good things, while he received evil things. Now you are in torment, while he is comforted.”

The scene changes; at death the whole scene changes. On this side of the grave, God waits for us. On the other side of the grave, the justice of God will take charge of us. And there is no mercy there, as I have told you, and as this Church reminds us. If you hear something concerning the salvation of your soul, do not scowl like children who are about to be given quinine.

It is medicine. No, this is how the matter stands. It is true that Christians today do not want to hear the language of truth. Do you know why? Because it reminds them in general of their faults and their lawless way of life. That is the issue. Because man is unwilling to stop, to change, and to do what Christ says for man’s own good, he shifts the blame and says that...

...the Gospel is at fault, the preachers are at fault, the priests are at fault—everyone is at fault. But the real causes are our sin and our ignorance. I will tell you one thing. In ancient Corinth, that corrupt city, as you yourselves know from history, amid all the other filth there lived a very corrupt and renowned courtesan named Lais. Do you know what is said about this woman? In her day, a kind of looking glass, what we call a mirror, was invented. She was the first in that region to buy one, for an astronomical sum; it was extremely expensive and regarded as a great acquisition.

For her and for her maidservants, it was a great thing that their mistress had acquired such an object. But what happened? The next day they saw Lais throw the mirror down and smash it in a rage, shattering it into a million pieces. “She has gone mad,” they said. “She has lost her mind; something has happened, a screw has come loose.” They could not understand why she had destroyed something so priceless and expensive. In any case, they withdrew for a moment and tried to discover why she had broken it. Who would not have wanted such a thing then? Something that today costs fifty cents, which everyone carries in a pocket or handbag, cost an astronomical sum in those days. One of the women, cleverer than all the others, managed to find out.

What did she learn? Do you know why Lais broke it? Because the mirror dared to show her a wrinkle that had begun to furrow her face. So she broke the mirror. Yes, but was the mirror at fault for showing you the wrinkle? The mirror was not at fault. We often behave in exactly the same way. The preacher is at fault for telling you this; the Gospel is at fault for requiring that; something else is at fault. No—the fault lies with sin, with this sin. Do you remember? Before the devil gained control of us and led us into sin, we would blush even at hearing an indecent joke. Once he gains control of us, it is others who blush now. We would see the priest, blush, and go to Holy Confession.

Then we entered into sin, and Holy Confession ceased. The priest is supposedly at fault, although he has finished his work with his stole. No, it is sin that is at fault, because it drove us away. Pay attention to this, then, my beloved. I do not intend to take up your time. I was simply enlisted by Father Neophytos. Since I found myself here in God’s place, I thought I might say a few words to you in love. I shall finish now, leaving you in the love of God, and I pray that God will shelter you as individuals, as families, and as a mission. Do not forget that we are Greeks and that you did not come here merely for money. Christ will make use of you here, because very soon Hellenism will once again be needed, Orthodoxy will once again be needed, and the Greek language will once again be needed to spread the light, just as ancient Greece once spread it to all those...

...whose guests we are today. Preserve your faith and your language, your Hellenism and your Christianity. And be certain that one day we shall meet in the Kingdom of Heaven, which we pray may be granted to one another and to all. Today, as you know, the Church called to our remembrance some of the many Fathers she has, Fathers connected with Ecumenical and local Councils. She presented to us the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which was concerned with iconoclasm and the restoration of the holy and sacred icons, and which forms part...

...of the threefold means the Holy Church sets before us in order to remind and persuade man. This threefold means consists of Orthodox preaching, Byzantine hymnology, and Byzantine iconography. On the occasion of these Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council, the Church spoke to us about the word and about the one who sows the word, through the Parable of the Sower, as you too heard today as Orthodox Christians. I want you to know that the Word of God is like a prism. It has many facets.

Think of certain pictures that show us the Lord, for example, when viewed straight on; when viewed slightly from the side, they show us the Most Holy Theotokos; and from another angle, they show us Saint George. The Word of God is exactly like that. It has many facets. Blessed is the man who can fully explore the many instructive facets of the Word of God. There is a general impression that the clergy are at fault, the speaker is at fault, the preacher is at fault—anyone and anything is at fault except man himself. But in today’s parable, Christ lays the responsibility for the lack of fruit on the soil, not on the sower.

He did not say that the seed was bad, or that the sower was bad. He said the soil was not good. That is why, when Christ speaks, His words need no correction, as we understand it. A person must examine himself and acknowledge the truth. Even if we admit that the sower is not good, and perhaps does not practice what he preaches, you are not being called to imitate him. But you must follow what he says, because Christ Himself said: “Whatever they tell you, observe and do; but do not act according to their works, for they speak and do not act.” He presented the world in four categories. As you heard, He described one category as a well-trodden road.

Another He described as a field with barely an inch of soil on the surface, while great boulders lie beneath it. Another category, also twenty-five percent of the whole plot, has weeds growing in it. And only one quarter of the whole area does He describe as good soil. In simple words, I would like to explain how a soul can ever be described as a well-trodden road and, since the soul is spiritual, how that spirit can be trampled underfoot. If we accept that the human soul is spirit, then it must be trampled by a spirit. The one who tramples the human soul is...

the evil spirit. And when the evil spirit tramples upon a person’s soul, that soul becomes hardened.

Could a person guard his soul so that the evil one does not trample it? Certainly. If we regard the soul as soil, how could we protect it? We would enclose it, setting posts around it and building a fence. Very well, we can put a fence around a field. But when it is a soul, when it is spirit, what can we put around it? There is a fence for that as well. When God gave the Ten Commandments and said, “You shall not steal; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not engage in fornication; you shall not bear false witness”—“you shall not,” “you shall not,” “you shall not”—He was doing nothing other than setting posts all around the human soul. God’s prohibitions and...

God’s commandments of “do not” are what guard a person’s spiritual plot of land. How did Satan enter the heart of Judas and bring him to the point of becoming a traitor and even taking his own life? How did he enter? Through the post against stealing, which Judas pulled out. “He was a thief,” the Gospel says, “and he carried what was put into the money box.” It was precisely through that opening that Satan entered and brought him to the point of betrayal and even suicide. A person who does not keep the commandments is simply tearing down the fence around his soul. Then the cloven-footed one can easily enter, trample it, and harden it. Here is a simple example. As long as a person has not entered into sin...

he blushes even when he hears something indecent. But once he enters into sin, other people blush because of the life he leads, while he himself no longer blushes. He has become hardened. A mother is deeply concerned for her children and her family. She would never want to leave her family and her home, because she longs to care for them with love. Yet necessity compels her to go out to work. She trembles at the thought of leaving the children. She asks her supervisor to let her leave a little early so that she can reach them in time. You see, this is the natural affection God has placed within a mother for her children. But then the mother is careless and becomes involved with her supervisor or with a colleague. Now she forgets her children.

She no longer cares about them, and one day she leaves them for someone outside the family. What hardened her heart? What changed her? Adultery. It hardened her heart, made her inhuman, and turned her into a beast. And when I say “a beast,” I am really insulting the beast. I am slandering the beast. An animal would never do to its young what we human beings can do to our children when we become entangled in sin. Sin is what hardens the human soul and makes it like a well-trodden road. Do you want your heart to remain soft, like suitable soil? Take care to guard yourself against sin. Do not let sin set foot upon you or enter within you. Otherwise, even if the preacher were not merely a saint...

but Christ Himself speaking, you would understand nothing. The Word of God would always remain on the surface, never bearing fruit and never taking root. Unfortunately, many people imagine that they can grasp these things in their own way. That is impossible. Your part is to guard your soul from sin. This is what Paul means when he says, “Do not quench the Spirit.” Take care that Satan does not extinguish through sin the lamp that was kindled within your little soul on the day of your Baptism. That is all. God’s commandments of “do not” and “you shall not” are there so that you may guard what Christ gave you on the day you were baptized. They are nothing more than that.

This is precisely what a person must watch over—and not merely watch over casually, but with the greatest care. Unfortunately, we hear many people comparing themselves with others who are worse than they are. It is true that beside certain sinners they appear to be angels, but beside angels they appear evil. A person does not need to go wrong in many things; if he goes wrong in even one, he may be lost. Think of a garden in your neighborhood that you envy. One morning you go out and find it completely ruined. What happened? Who destroyed it? Something must have happened. But the fence is sound, the gate is shut and locked. Yes, but down at the very edge there was one tiny hole that no one had noticed.

The neighbor’s little pig came in through it and ruined the garden. That is how it happens. That is where it enters and where it begins: with the smallest thing, with seemingly nothing. With a caress, a flirtation, a smile, a joke, a filthy word, or something indecent. And a person becomes a notorious corrupter, notoriously corrupt. That is how it begins—from nothing, from what seems insignificant. What is cancer? Is it not something microscopic? Who has seen it? Yet it reaps humanity even though no one can see it. Consider this: microbes reap humanity. Why should sin not do the same, since it is spiritual in nature? Why should it not reap humanity? Yet many people have pulled out many of the fence posts. Naturally, not even a thorn grows there, much less anything...

fragrant or beautiful. Not even thorns grow in those who are careless and fail to guard their souls and hearts by keeping the commandments. You know that if there is a vacant plot on a corner and we continually cut across it to avoid going around the bend, nothing grows where we tread. Think of the lots where children play ball. Nothing grows there. If you scatter seed, it remains on the surface, and the demons take it away. How do the demons take what is good from a person? I am speaking to you now. Perhaps you will simply say, “These things are fine and good.” But when you reach the door, “good” changes into “but”: “Yes, good, good—but...” The goodness disappears, and only the “but” remains.

If a person is unwilling to guard his soul by keeping the commandments, he should know that it will always remain a well-trodden road. Even if God Himself came to sow there, nothing would grow within it. The person becomes hardened. But once the soul is guarded, you will see that this plot begins to produce something. At first it may produce nettles; I do not know, but something will grow. In time, it will begin to produce what is good. And much later, after it has ceased to be walked upon and trampled, it will bear fruit and become fit for cultivation. In simple words, this is the first category of people, one quarter of the whole: those in whom nothing bears fruit, so the Gospel and the Word of God are received in vain. The other quarter, another twenty-five percent, Christ presents as a field...

that truly has soil on the surface, but beneath it, as He says, are stones. The seed fell and sprouted while there was rain and moisture. But when the heat became intense, it withered because underneath there was a quarry of solid rock. There was soil only on the surface, so the plant could draw no moisture from below. Who are the people with great boulders beneath the surface? They are outwardly Christians. They are first to light a candle, first to kneel, and first to make a long sign of the Cross—but not first in living the Christian life. They believe in Christ and believe in God, but they will not have children. God is almighty, of course, but He cannot feed their children. He feeds young ravens, wolf cubs, and fox cubs, but He cannot feed Christian children. These are people who, beneath the surface, hold to a faith of their own.

“Christ is all very well, but He must also tell us what we are going to eat. Christ is all very well, but He must also tell us what we are going to wear.” These are also people who confess only the little things. “You know, my mother-in-law influences me. You know, my daughter-in-law is like this. You know, simply looking at her makes me angry.” Yes—but their great boulders, their sins of the flesh and their injustices, remain buried. When the ground beneath has not been cleared, the Word of God cannot penetrate it. I do not know; I do not imagine that all of you come from large cities. Perhaps some of you come from rural areas. You know that if a field is to give us the yield we expect in return for our sweat, we must dig it. We must remove the scrub oak, the mastic bushes, and the trees. We must...

dig it, remove the stones beneath the surface, and cultivate it. Only then can we make it a garden fit for its purpose. If we leave the stones buried beneath the soil, we should know that we will accomplish nothing. We do this work in the soil of our garden or field. But do we do the same work in our soul? Suppose, for example, that I entered even the most spiritually advanced church and had the power to gather up all the sins buried beneath the surface of its Christians—beginning with the priest or bishop, perhaps even from within the Holy Altar—and then continued outward as far as the candle stand, gathering the sins of the parish council, the deacons, and the chanters. I would have enough to load the entire British fleet.

There are many unconfessed sins and many injustices. People have wronged their own relatives, taken their plots of land, and claimed more than their proper share. Some have stolen from employers, others have cheated the tax authorities, and others have stolen from the state—and continue to steal from it through pensions obtained unlawfully. All these things remain buried beneath the surface. Meanwhile, we say our prayers and perform our devotions, light our candle for the Resurrection, receive the light outside the Church and go home, and take the blessing of water at Theophany, and so forth. Thus, like that soil, we are outwardly Christians. Inwardly, however, when matters go deep enough that we must carry out the Gospel completely and do what Christ desires—which is always for our own good—we draw back. Christ desires nothing that is not for our benefit. He has nothing to gain from us. He has given us everything to enjoy.

But lawfully—lawfully. A medical student once said to me during an argument, as you call it: “It is only logical. Did God not make woman for man?” I replied, “Yes, He made her as a helper.” “Then why should I not enjoy her?” And who told you that you may not have a wife? Christ does not forbid it. You do not take her before Holy Matrimony. You take her in Holy Matrimony, then you increase and multiply, and you struggle together.

“Does God agree with what you are doing, my dear man?” I asked him. We confuse everything. We say, “Very well, yes, we shall go to Christ’s Church and so forth—but what lies beneath the surface belongs to us.” We sell Christ the air rights. We keep everything underneath for ourselves. If He wants to build in the air, He may do so, but we retain what lies below. These are people who have not allowed Christ to enter beneath the surface and cleanse the basement. The basement of many of us reeks, regardless of the outward appearance we present. As a display in the shop window, we Christians are wonderful; but in our actual lives, we are not as we should be. We have faults and sins that remain concealed. In such cases, the Word of God is rejected because it cannot take root there. And so I do not know whether, at this moment...

these words of mine have reached you. They arise from Christ’s own words, not from mine, so that each of us may examine himself and see whether we truly harbor things that do not agree with the will of God, the Gospel, and Christ. Believe me, the injustices we have committed are enough not merely to condemn us to Hell, but to cast us into torment. Christ drank the cup to the very bottom, down to the dregs. He makes no agreement and no truce with sin. He forgives sin, but He does not bless sin. If only we considered the things we have withheld from others in various ways—money and other possessions, tools...

books, and other people’s belongings that are not ours. If these things alone could cry out and say, “Send us where we belong, because we did not come from your sweat, your blood, or your toil,” there would be a tremendous uproar in our homes, and many people would be left poor. In a fraction of a second, many of us would become destitute. Yet such people are called Christians, and some even hold important positions in secular and social affairs, perhaps even in the Church. But what lies beneath the surface remains our own life, not the life of Christ. Forgive me for the manner and tone in which I speak, but these things arise from the practical meaning of the message.

It is Christ who is speaking, not I. He said these things, and He gave them to us. We simply remove the bones, so to speak, and give people the flesh, because even the most precious food has its bones and its scraps, as we say, and these we remove. Those are the first two categories.

Then comes a third category. This too represents one quarter of the whole field, and that quarter of the seed that was sown went to waste. This is the place where something does indeed sprout, but weeds spring up with it, and the weeds choke the good growth. I do not know whether you have noticed that no single well-intentioned, good person can absorb an evil person and change him. On the contrary, many good people have been ruined by a few evil ones. Unfortunately, evil has this power. It has its allure, you see, and the careless person is enticed by it. Instead of absorbing the evil and turning it into good, he is absorbed by evil and becomes evil himself. Most people today...

The proportion today is not twenty-five percent; it is greater than that. Perhaps Christ was giving us a representative portion then, but today the percentage is higher. These are the people who want to reconcile God with the world, God with fashion, God with the flesh, God with mammon, God with egotism—God with everything. They cannot be reconciled. They are incompatible, however much we may try to reconcile them. And sadly, this is the reality. Today you enter Christian homes and cannot tell that they are Christian, except that an icon corner has been added and there are a few images of saints used as decorations. They are not there for people to seek their counsel: for someone to ask Christ where he should go, for the lady of the house to ask the Most Holy Theotokos how she should live, or for the young woman to ask her patron, Saint Catherine or Saint Paraskevi, and so forth.

Nor does the young man ask Saint Nicholas, the model of self-restraint, or Basil the Great, the wise. No; for most people, these holy persons are merely decorative. And what can I say about homes today? You will see it in the homeland. I do not know about things here, and I do not wish to intrude. But you will see that nothing distinguishes such homes. Their way of life is the same as everyone else’s. The number of children is carefully limited—whether there will even be children in the family, and so forth.

You enter on a Wednesday, and you would think it was Pascha. You see no difference, as though Wednesday meant nothing. You enter on a Friday, and it is the same. You see the children with their sandwiches and so forth—Wednesday, Friday, Great Lent—as though it were a time of festivity. They may be so strong that they could punch a hole through the wall. We are not speaking of a sickly or frail child who needs special care and for whom some discernment must be exercised. You can see no distinction at all. You enter and cannot tell: are they women, are they men, what are they? Today these distinctions have been erased, as you know, and often it takes...

touch itself to discover whether the person sitting beside us, or walking ahead of us, is a man or a woman. I remember an elderly colonel, a serious man. He was riding a trolleybus up Stadiou Street in Athens, and the people behind were calling, “Move forward, gentlemen! Move forward, gentlemen!” So he said to someone in front of him, “Please move forward a little, miss.” The person turned around—a great hulking man—and confronted him, saying, “Sir!” But how could the colonel have known? The man had a tuft of hair hanging down his back and was wearing something transparent. There was no way to tell that he was a man. “Please, miss, move forward,” he had said, and the man nearly slapped him. That is where we have come today. We do not care. Let Christ speak; let the Synods write that a woman must not wear a man’s clothing, nor a man a woman’s clothing.

Let the Old Testament speak and say that when a woman puts on a man’s clothing, it is an abomination, a monstrosity in the sight of God, and that when a man puts on a woman’s clothing, it too is an abomination, a monstrosity in the sight of God. Some people think Christ came into the world to create fashions. Why do they take offense at Christ so quickly, take a stand against Him, and become upset by this? God is speaking to you. Wake up, man! God is speaking, and He has made no mistake. Fifteen hundred years before Christ, He spoke about the very condition that exists today. “Yes, but the little child is cold,” they say. Were you cold when you wore a dress? You too were out in the snow. Why were you not cold then? “They catch cold through their legs.” I have heard this many times—that people catch cold through their legs. I know that doctors have always listened to our lungs and our backs. They have never listened to our legs. How it has now come about that we catch cold only through our legs, I do not know. If someone has discovered this, forgive me. These things are mistaken.

Of course, we try to have both—both at once. But how can it be done? How can it be done? They do not fit together. They do not fit. As the popular saying goes, two heads cannot fit beneath one cap, and two shoes cannot fit on one foot. Christ said, “He who is not against us is for us, and he who is for us is not against us.” You cannot have Satan and mammon together with God. The two do not belong together. Either you will love one and not the other, or else the whole thing simply cannot work. Can a young woman have two lovers? How would the other one feel? Or would she want her boyfriend, her beloved, her fiancé, to have two fiancées, two other women promised to him? She would not want him to share his heart with anyone. How then can we say to Him, “Christ, You must wait. I will come at Pascha. For now I have my own life and the others”? Christ called this generation adulterous.

He called it adulterous because it commits adultery with another. It does not want its Bridegroom, Christ, but wants the other one, the cloven-footed devil, who meddles in its life every day. Yes, my beloved, that is roughly how matters stand. This is, in essence, what Christ teaches today. I do not know to which category I belong. I want to believe that, if I am not in all three of the first categories, I am certainly in one of them. I am not in the last. That is why, in thirty years of preaching, I have never spoken about the good soil—never. For my conscience accuses me. I have never been good soil. Never. I have always found myself in one of the first three categories, or even in all three. God shows great forbearance and waits. Blessed is the person who makes good use of God’s forbearance. Paul cries out:

“Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to metanoia, to repentance?” Do you not understand, he says, that God in His forbearance is waiting for you? When a person considers that, in a fraction of a second, he may pass into that place where, however far he stretches out his hands, he can reach no one and no one can reach him—and that he will find himself where he does not wish to go, whether he likes it or not—then, as a rational human being, even one who landed on the moon today, he ought to come down to earth and face the reality that he is human and will depart one day. My beloved, we did not come to earth in order to live. We came in order to die, and we die in order to live. Pay attention to that last point. My beloved, we are not permanent inhabitants of the earth, as our intellectuals tell us...

and even our theologians. We are tenants on the earth; notice the difference. We are not permanent inhabitants of the earth. We stand between heaven and earth, and we are tenants here. Paul declares it as doctrine: “Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the one that is to come.” Moreover, the grave is not the end, so that one might say, “Let me die and be at rest.” Pass beyond it, and what awaits you has already been prepared. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning of another life, whose true nature cannot even be put into order by our words. Blessed is the person who learns to view life in this way. A person brought nothing into the world when he came, and he will take nothing from the world when he leaves.

one who has discernment.

Δεν είναι για «χρόνια πολλά», αγαπητοί μου, η Θεία Κοινωνία. Δεν είναι για χρυσό δοντάκι ούτε για κοκό, που λένε οι μητέρες χωρίς να γνωρίζουνε, μπροστά στο Άγιο Ποτήριο, για να δελεάσουν τα παιδιά τους να ανοίξουν το στόμα τους, να κοινωνήσουν. Είναι η ζωή του ανθρώπου. Άκουσα σήμερα τον πάτερ, ο οποίος μίλησε πολύ δογματικά, ότι η αναγέννηση του ανθρώπου είναι το βάπτισμά του. Ναι, αλλά και η διατήρηση της αναγεννηθείσης εκ του βαπτίσματος ψυχής είναι το έτερον σκέλος, το στήθος της Εκκλησίας, που είναι το Άγιον Ποτήριο. Όταν η μητέρα γεννήσει, το παίρνει το παιδί και το φέρει στο στήθος της για να το διατηρήσει. Όταν φυτέψει τη γλάστρα, θα την ποτίσει για να τη διατηρήσει. Έτσι και η Εκκλησία, η οποία εξεπήδησε από την κεντηθείσα πλευρά του Χριστού. Τι εβγήκε από την πλευρά του Χριστού;

στον κόσμο τούτον να συμφιλιωθεί με τον Χριστό στην ωραία πύλη, αλίμονό του εν ημέρα κρίσεως. Μια και σας έθιξα τα σκηνικά της Εκκλησίας, τα οποία πολύς κόσμος αγνοεί το τι αυτά συμβολίζουν, τι υπενθυμίζουν και τι διδάσκουν, σας προτρέπω να προσέξετε μια περίπτωση, την εξής. Δεν ξέρω αν έχετε δει: όλες οι εικόνες και στο τέμπλο, του Χριστού μας, της Παναγίας μας, του Τιμίου Προδρόμου, των Αγίων κλπ., έχουν μπροστά ένα καντήλι και καίει λάδι. Γυρίζουμε στον θρόνο, στο δεσποτικό, και βλέπουμε εκεί τον Χριστό και δεν καίει καντήλι με λάδι. Γιατί εκεί τον αφήσατε χωρίς λάδι τον Χριστό;
