Summary
The lecture calls Orthodox Christians to reconnect with Holy Tradition, whose councils, icons, relics, saints, and miracles preserve and illuminate the Church’s faith. Accounts of Saint Raphael and his companions on Mytilene, along with the discovery of ancient relics and icons, are offered as confirmation of Orthodox continuity. The lecture concludes by introducing the Life-Giving Cross as Christ’s glory and throne, warning that ignorance leaves Orthodox believers vulnerable to attacks on their faith.

You have come here this evening so that we may speak about something connected both with what we have already covered and with our purpose. As most of you who have joined us on these evenings know, our purpose is to reconnect with our Tradition, which guides us on the right path.
It guides us to salvation, because a person who draws away from the Tradition of the Church becomes spiritually cold, in a sense, and is a danger both to himself and to others. We have made an effort to bring these things to light and reconnect our faithful with them—not drawing from abstract ideas or from human commandments, as some like to claim, but from the very source of true Orthodoxy. As we said, these things have come forth from the Tomb of our Lord, from the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos, and from the receiving of the Holy Light, a privilege granted to the Orthodox. We also spoke about Councils, about miracles at the Councils, about relics and the miracles worked through them, about the Theotokos, about iconography in general, and about all the miracles surrounding us. From every direction they stand like red warning lights, telling us, ‘Take care: this far, and no farther.’
They stand beside us as our protection. You know that last night we spoke about many Saints, and especially about our Most Holy Theotokos and her miracles—miracles that almost every Greek family has experienced. Yet today, in a sense, we have forgotten her, and she has become merely a decorative figure. For us Orthodox, however, she is a person of immense importance, after God, of course, even though others accuse us because of her. We have a duty, not to defend her as though she were in danger, but to understand that we ourselves are in danger if we lose this treasure called the Most Holy Theotokos. In any event, to conclude this subject and move on to something else tonight, I would like to offer a brief answer.
There is one passage which, if I may use the expression, all our opponents carry around like a piece of candy. It is the passage from Paul’s First Epistle to Timothy which says, ‘There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.’ You have surely heard this many times. I want you to pay attention to its correct interpretation, because unfortunately most of us Orthodox do not examine it carefully.
The question is this. It says, ‘There is one mediator between men and God: Christ.’ We agree. Our various opponents urge us to go directly to Christ and to bypass everyone else, whether it is a Saint or the Theotokos herself. So I ask: when the Lord says, ‘Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,’ as they themselves quote, does He also teach us not to ask the Theotokos for help? I can say, ‘My Christ, help me. My Christ, illumine me. My Christ, take me into Your care.’ But if I also entreat His Mother and say, ‘My Most Holy Theotokos, help me with this request which I am also bringing before our Lord,’ what then?
Am I doing you some harm? What wrong am I committing, and where am I contradicting Holy Scripture? In fact, this passage teaches precisely what we Orthodox believe. Have you noticed exactly what it says? It says that between God—watch my hand here—between God and mankind, Jesus is the mediator. Jesus intercedes; He is the mediator. What do we say, then, that makes them protest that we are corrupting Holy Scripture? Do we say, ‘Lord, move aside so that we can put the Most Holy Theotokos there to mediate with the Father’? Do we Orthodox ever say such a thing?
We hear them attacking our Most Holy Theotokos day and night, saying that we must remove her from the picture, never entreat her, and go directly to Christ. Of course we may go directly to Christ; He does not close the door to us. But what am I tearing down? What troubles you? What gnaws at you so deeply that I must not also seek the help of the Most Holy Theotokos? I do not put my Most Holy Theotokos in the place of my Christ. I do not place her between the believer and God; I place the Theotokos between the believer and Christ. What do we say so often in the Church without considering its meaning? Do we not say, ‘Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us’? We do not say, ‘O Father, save us,’ but, ‘O Savior, save us.’ What does this mean? It means that we place our Most Holy Theotokos between the believer and Christ. The scriptural passage remains completely intact. And why do we ask her to intercede?
To answer plainly, sir: this passage is not disturbed. It is not altered or distorted. The Lord remains in His proper place between the Father and the believer, as the divinely inspired words of the Holy Spirit through Paul declare. We, however, ask our Most Holy Theotokos to intercede with her Son. She does not deny her Son in any way. Nothing of the sort. A mother does not refuse her son.
Would she not do this for her Son? Think about it carefully. And from now on, take care whenever you hear people saying such foolish things—claiming that we act against Holy Scripture. We do not act against Holy Scripture at all. As for the place we give our Most Holy Theotokos, we place her between the believer and Christ; that is, we ask her to intercede for the believer before God. Consequently, the Lord remains the mediator before the Triune God, just as Holy Scripture says, while we also do what is ours to do by seeking the intercessions of the Theotokos. So do not be deceived into thinking that you are sinning by doing this. The interpretation of this passage is not the one they give, but the one I have given you. I believe you will see it to be very clear,
very vivid, and entirely doctrinal. Pay attention to this teaching as well, for it has been buried, in a sense, largely through carelessness. To conclude these matters, other persons who call us back from every direction to our Tradition and our Orthodoxy are our great Saints, both ancient and modern. We have spoken about many of them. I would also like to present Saint Nektarios of Aegina to you. You know about Saint Nektarios, do you not? He is a modern Saint. A person does not need to travel to Jerusalem, Cana, or Capernaum in order to encounter miracles. He can come to Aegina, come here to the church of Saint Nektarios, or go anywhere else where there is a church dedicated to him.
There are miracles. Are they going to deny us this as well? Will they tell us that miracles no longer happen, that the Saints do not work wonders, and that the Saints are not friends of God? Are we to push them aside too? What are we to make of this? Does this Father have no children? Does Christ have no younger brothers and sisters? What, after all, is wrong with these people? They keep insisting on being masters over everything. Is it not a great blasphemy to tell the world, ‘God has no more children; He has no Saints; Christ has no more brothers and sisters’? Is it not shameful to say such a thing? We have thousands of miracles continually. More than twenty-two thousand miracles—pay attention to that number—and two of those accounts have passed through these very fingers and through my own hands,
miracles of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, apart from the miracles I myself have experienced in my own person and within my family. After seventeen years of childlessness, he gave us a child, whom we named Nektarios, or Symeon, and today he is a monk on the Holy Mountain. He was sixteen or eighteen years old. I need go no farther; there is no need. I myself have experienced a twofold miracle.
The mother was expected to die, and the child was expected to die...
If anyone understands these things, there is a physician here who knows about them: both mother and child were expected to die. Yet by a miracle both were delivered in time. The child was saved, and the mother was saved. We have a twofold miracle involving the very same persons. And how many miracles of Saint Nektarios of Aegina are there? These accounts have passed through my own hands: into the records in Aegina, the records in Pachiana in Chania, and the records at Kamara, where there are centers of Saint Nektarios in many places. There was also a Frenchman—and this was by no means the worst case. Two months ago he healed a physician. He raised him from his bed at the Red Cross Hospital, where he lay with a cancerous tumor the size of a small child’s head. He took him out of their hands after a priest came with the relics of Saint Nektarios and they were venerated. I have recorded the case in a periodical I publish called Saint Marina. The issue is being circulated this October. Since copies also come here, find one and read it. The physician’s name is Papadimitriou.
Physicians always seem to have their reasons—I do not know why, unless it is because they lack pure faith—for taking the opposite position. Yet Saint Nektarios worked a miracle for this man and took him out of their hands. The professor and his fellow physicians, who had voluntarily gone to support their colleague, were left standing with their hands raised and their mouths open. I have thirteen thousand miracles recorded in notebooks, accounts that have reached me but cannot all be published. They are given with names, not anonymously—not simply, ‘Someone suffered from this or that.’ No: Mr. So-and-so from such-and-such a place, at a particular address, with a telephone number if possible, suffering from this, that, or the other condition, after having visited this physician, that physician, this woman doctor, and so forth. Nothing had helped.
Then Saint Nektarios of Aegina, with a little oil, raised the man up and sent him home. Strange things indeed. And today anyone can travel to Aegina. Go and see what takes place there, at that tomb and before those Holy Relics. You will see that it is like an entire medical center. Saint Nektarios does not deal with only one particular illness, as is often the case with many Saints, to whom our Lord grants a special gift according to their calling. If someone has trouble with the eyes, for example, he will go to Saint Paraskevi; she has that particular gift. He may go to Saint Anna. If someone has trouble, let us say, with the reproductive organs, the internal organs, the stomach, and so forth, he will go to Saint Artemios.
That is his particular gift. If someone has leprosy or another such disease, he will go to Saint Barbara. If someone suffers from hair loss, he will go to Saint Xenia. Each Saint has a gift corresponding, in some way, to his or her martyrdom. Saint Nektarios of Aegina does not have only one specialty, like an ophthalmologist, a urologist, or a dentist—Saint Antipas, for example. No, he is like an entire medical center. He even has grace against unclean spirits. Satan would say, ‘Until now we had the Monk, and now the Bishop has been added as well.’ The Monk is Saint Gerasimos of Kefalonia. ‘And now,’ he says, ‘the Bishop has been added.’ The Bishop is Saint Nektarios. When a person arrives there, he sees that something truly happens—something that happens nowhere else.
It happens only in Orthodoxy. That is why, whenever we conclude or complete anything, we always say, ‘Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.’ These are the friends of God; these are the Saints of God. Their intercessions have great power, and people receive great benefit when they accept these friends of God. You should know that today Saint Nektarios of Aegina remains a sign that is spoken against. Many people have still not accepted him. A large number have not accepted him even to this day. They do a terrible thing: they blaspheme against the grace of the Holy Spirit. When we see the Holy Spirit at work and thrust our own clever arguments into the middle, that is blasphemy, and it is forgiven neither in this age nor in the age to come. Christ says this about those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. They are people who see miracles with their own eyes.
The water of the Agiasmos does not spoil, and someone says to you, ‘The devil causes that.’ Yet this is all a manifestation of grace, of the Holy Spirit. You see a Saint working miracles, and someone says, ‘It was a coincidence,’ searching for some way to dismiss it. Such people are not forgiven because they leave no room for metanoia, for repentance, through which they might be helped and forgiven. So, as I was saying, the Saint is a sign that is spoken against. And I want you to know that he is not only a Saint: he is also a wonderworker and a myrrh-streamer. Saint Nektarios possesses this threefold witness. Some are Saints but are not wonderworkers; others are Saints and wonderworkers but are not myrrh-streamers. I remember when his sainthood was proclaimed—for, as you know, the Church does not make Saints; she proclaims them. Some people imagine that the Church manufactures Saints out of self-interest or for some similar reason.
The Church proclaims the Saints. She says to the faithful people of Christ, ‘Pay attention to this man: he is a Saint. We have these signs. We have myrrh flowing from his relics; we have miracles; we have this evidence and that evidence.’ So when his sainthood was proclaimed by the late Patriarch Athenagoras—at about the same time, I think, as Saint Kosmas of Aetolia and Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain, though I do not remember the exact details—the monks of one monastery on the Holy Mountain were divided. Some said yes and others said no, until the abbot was forced to intervene. He resolved the matter by calling them together and telling them that they must not be lost over the question of a Saint. Whether he was a Saint or was not, they must not lose their souls over it. ‘We have a way to settle this matter,’ he told them: ‘prayer.’
The abbot proclaimed a three-day fast and a period of prayer, asking the Lord to reveal whether Nektarios was truly a Saint or not. On the third day, before the abbot had gone down to the Church, there was a discreet knock at his door, in the customary manner: “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” From inside, the abbot answered, “Amen.” The door opened, and Saint Nektarios entered. When the abbot saw him, he recognized him from his photographs and rose to fall at his feet. But the Saint said to him, “Sit down, Brother Athanasios”—for that was the abbot’s name—“sit down. Go and tell the fathers not to trouble themselves any longer. The Lord has sanctified me, and I am a Saint, a wonderworker, and a myrrh-streamer. And know this, and tell the fathers as well: He did not sanctify me for any other reason.”
“Was it because I had prayed more than you? No. Because I had fasted more than you? No. Because I had given more alms than you? No, but because I forgave. For this reason alone He sanctified me.” Remarkable things! And I am speaking of our own times. If I began telling you such things, I would never stop. Who has ever gone to this Saint and come away empty-handed? A man from Velo in Corinthia once wrote to me: “Mr. Panagopoulos, this Saint never says no to anyone.” Yet it is not the Saint who grants these things; Christ grants them through the Saint’s grace. I want you to understand that the Saints do not perform miracles by their own power. The Saints intercede; Christ performs the miracles.
The glory, the honor, and the worship belong to Christ. Even the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) does not perform miracles without Christ’s permission. But she has boldness before Him; she moves our Lord’s justice to mercy, and the miracle takes place. Have you never noticed the beautiful troparia and doxastika, which express these matters with doctrinal precision? What, for example, does one verse from the troparion of Saint Spyridon say? “Glory to Him who glorified you.” Who is that? Christ. “Glory to Him who crowned you.” Who crowned him? “Glory to Him who works healings for all through you.” When I wrote my first book about Saint Nektarios—which is now circulating in its tenth edition—I titled it Nothing Is Incurable for Saint Nektarios, and some good Christians whom I knew misunderstood me. They said that such a thing can be said only of God.
But is it not God who works through him? Is it not God who makes use of him? Does the glory not belong to God? Does the glory belong to me, or does it belong to the Saint? It belongs to Him; the glory belongs to Christ. Through His Saint, Christ Himself is glorified. Yet we fail to pay attention to these things. This is a vast subject. In any case, keep it in mind and look into it. If God ever counts you worthy to return to the homeland and visit your relatives—perhaps to spend Pascha or Christmas there—set aside a little money and go as far as Aegina, if you have never been. Everything holy is beautiful, and it is good to venerate these things even from afar. But it is better still to go to the Saint’s own home. It is better still to visit his tomb. Better still is to approach his Holy Relics and see the chains once worn by the demon-possessed hanging there, with their written testimonies of thanksgiving beneath them.
It is better still to see all the votive offerings there and the crowds of people who come. Then you are strengthened—truly strengthened in the faith. It is good to see slides of the Holy Land and the All-Holy Sepulchre and to hear about them, but it is very different to go there yourself and bow your head upon that sacred place. This matters. So count this too among the great strengths of Orthodoxy. This one is on Aegina. There is also another, more recent revelation on Mytilene—I do not know whether anyone here comes from there—at Thermi on Mytilene. These are newly revealed Saints: Saint Raphael, Saint Nicholas, and Irene, the young daughter of a local notable, whom the Turks burned inside a large earthen jar on Bright Tuesday in 1453.
After lying hidden for some four or five hundred years, that monastery was revealed through visions. Excavations were carried out, the whole site was opened up, and beneath it they found the tombs. They found the Church, the relics, the girl inside the earthen jar, the holy maiden, and the icon of Christ Pantocrator. The monastery had been destroyed in 1453—and consider how many years before Luther and Russell that was. So icons certainly existed before Luther and before Russell; they cannot accuse us on that score. We possess powerful witnesses, and Christians must know them and bring them forward. As I told you the other evening, these witnesses serve a twofold purpose: they strengthen us, and they teach others. We have a duty to bring forth from the rich treasury of our Orthodoxy, from the treasury of our Church, all that Christ has given us.
In this way we shall be able to give an answer. Since this is so, I cannot resist sharing with you one more contemporary event, something that happened very recently. A few days ago, I received a letter from the wilderness of the Jordan. I want to read it to you because it is very timely and directly related to what we are discussing. Listen. It is dated the twenty-eighth of the eighth month—that is, about a month and a half ago—August 28: “The Holy and Venerable Ancient Lavra of Saint George of Choziba, near the deepest wilderness of the Jordan, August 28.” It begins with ordinary remarks about receiving my letter and so forth. But let me come to the point I want to draw from it and share with you. “If you would also like to hear our news from here, listen. Twenty-six years ago, an elder—a hermit, hieromonk, and spiritual father—reposed at one of our monastery’s hermitages, down in the ravine, half an hour away on foot, in a remote cave. That was twenty-six years ago.” The ravine is the Brook Cherith, from which the Prophet Elijah drank water. The Monastery of Choziba stands where the cave of the Prophet Elijah was. It was there also that Joachim went and prayed and received the assurance that Anna would conceive.
It was there that Saint Anna later founded a holy monastery known as the Monastery of the Virgins, and there that Saint Anna reposed. Yes—surely no ordinary event, and no ordinary place. “So,” the letter says, “he reposed twenty-six years ago, and we buried him there in his hermitage,” writes Elder Amphilochios. “A month ago, some Greeks came to our monastery. Many of them had known the elder because they had gone to him for Confession. They asked us to take them to venerate the grave of the elder, the hermit and spiritual father.” They asked the archimandrite, the elder and abbot, to lead them half an hour into the wilderness so that they might venerate his grave. “And so we went.”
“We entered the ravine, reached the cave, climbed up by ladders and ropes, and all of us venerated his grave. Then they asked me to open the tomb so that we might venerate his relics. We agreed. We opened the tomb and beheld a great miracle: the elder and hermit—that is, his body—was completely intact. His beard, his hair, his cassock, his monastic schema, his priestly stole, and his shoes were all preserved. Even his outer monastic veil looked fresh, as though damp with perspiration. After twenty-six years in the grave, he looked alive, as though we had laid him there that very moment. We trembled with awe and were overcome with compunction. We venerated him, covered him again, and departed. Five or six days later...”
“...all the fathers of the monastery returned with a temporary reliquary—that is, a temporary coffin...”
“With that temporary reliquary, we lowered him from the hermitage by ropes and brought him to the monastery. We now have him inside the Church in this temporary reliquary. Great crowds have come to venerate him, as has the whole Patriarchate. We have also held all-night vigils. We went to Jerusalem to commission another reliquary in which to place him. We photographed him, and when the photographs are sent to us, we shall send them to you. He looks completely alive: his eyebrows and eyelashes remain, and his body is entirely without corruption. In another letter we shall write to you in detail. Abbot of the Holy Lavra of Choziba and of the Hermit Fathers, Archimandrite Amphilochios.” This has happened in our own time: although he reposed so many years ago, the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and unto the ages.
This is the God of the Orthodox: the God of miracles, the God who works through holy relics, the God of virginity, the God of the Most Holy Theotokos. What kind of God is He? The true God, whom you behold wherever you turn. Christ is not only found in the Bible; Christ is also present in Holy Tradition, which gives us the living interpretation of the Bible. If we say that the Bible is the vein, then Holy Tradition is the blood that flows through it, giving life and bringing the human person to fulfillment. So, through the prayers of this elder, let us pay close attention to the things we have been discussing these evenings. Next I would like to present something else that many people misunderstand. This too is a weapon of our Orthodoxy—and, I dare say, a weapon second only to the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy).
It is the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, a symbol of our faith that is so greatly misunderstood. The other day, when I spoke about the four persons and the one symbol that were prefigured from ancient times, I presented the Cross to you. I told you that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), the Precious Forerunner, and the Precious and Life-Giving Cross were all prefigured beforehand. We know in advance the role each would fulfill and when each would come. Concerning Christ in particular, we know where He would come and how He would come: that He would be born of a Virgin, that He would be born in Bethlehem, and even precisely when He would be born.
There are types, symbols, images, and prophecies concerning the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, which is the glory of Christ and the throne of Christ. Let me quote just a few words from the seventh chapter of John: “For as yet the Holy Spirit had not been given, because Christ was not yet glorified.” What is the glory of Christ? He had not yet been crucified. He had not yet offered Himself in sacrifice; He had not yet been crucified; Christ had not yet ascended His throne, and so the Holy Spirit had not yet come. “For as yet the Holy Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” The Cross is the glory of Christ.
Everything that can help an Orthodox Christian, either directly or indirectly, comes under attack—especially in our own day. And even when we Christians do not attack these things openly, I dare say that we attack them through our ignorance. If someone tells us that the Precious Cross is merely a piece of wood—and even a criminal piece of wood, because it killed Christ, an instrument of murder—we do not know how to answer.
Read the Life of Saint Paisios and see what happened to a monk who took some of his handiwork down to the city to sell. On the road, a Jewish man approached him and began to wear him down, telling him that Christ is not God, that He is not the Messiah, that the Messiah has not yet come, and so forth. The poor young monk did not know Holy Scripture well enough to answer him. The man cornered him with his arguments until, at one point, simply to get away from him, the monk said, “Very well, perhaps it is so.” Then he escaped and continued on his way. But when he returned to the monastery that evening and went to make a prostration before Saint Paisios, he found the door shut, and the Saint would not receive him. And you understand what it means when the abbot refuses to receive you.
He had left with a blessing, and he had to return and receive a new blessing before entering the monastery. So he realized that he must have done something wrong. He examined himself but could find nothing. He had guarded his eyes, his flesh, his conduct, and his whole behavior; he had done nothing wrong. He began to weep outside, and his weeping broke the hearts of the monks. They intervened and begged the Saint to receive him, or at least to explain what he had done. At last Saint Paisios relented, opened the door, and his first words were: “So, perhaps it is so, is it?” The monk was thunderstruck. He did not even remember his exchange that morning with the Jewish man as he went down to the city. “So, perhaps it is so, is it?”
“I do not understand you, Geronta.” “What were you discussing with that Jewish man as you went down this morning?” The monk had been heading toward Alexandria, while Saint Paisios, from above, had perceived what was happening below as though through his own receiver. “So, perhaps it is so, is it?” And then, my dear people, he received him back into communion once again. Read the Life of Saint Paisios. The Saint restored him because those words were considered a denial of Christ. The monk had not spoken out of malice, but he had spoken the words. Yet when we face such matters, we stand there open-mouthed. “Perhaps the Cross is an instrument of murder; after all, it killed Christ.” Did the wood, then, kill Christ? When someone takes a gun and commits murder, should we put the gun on trial, or the murderer? Tell me, whom should we judge? Of course, my children, these people will not give way.
All those who say such things are serving someone else’s designs. And what is their purpose? You know that there are some Jewish critics who even speak about our Symbol of Faith, the Creed. “Look,” they say, “we know the Creed too,” and so forth. Do you know how they recite it? By falsifying it. Which part of our Creed do you think they alter? We hear such things and do not notice. We say, “Crucified under Pontius Pilate.” They change “under,” in the sense of “during the time of,” to “by”: “Crucified by Pontius Pilate.” In other words, Pontius Pilate crucified Him, not us. Do you understand? It is enough to make you tear your hair out. See what the devil contrives! And unfortunately, he finds room to work in us because we do not study these things deeply.
We make the sign of the Cross carelessly and imagine that this is all, as though we had no duty to understand our faith. So what some call an instrument of murder is, in truth, the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. From the outset, I want you to know that it is true that “cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.” Yes, this is written. But why is the one hanging upon the tree called accursed? And why do we call it the Precious Wood? I wear a small wooden cross containing a fragment of the Precious Wood no larger than the point of a needle. Yet when I place my hand over it while standing before a demon-possessed person, I hear the answer—if you will pardon the expression—“You with the hand! Will you put your hand there?” It is the devil who says this.
“Are you going to put your hand there?” What do I have inside—do I have a pistol? I have no pistol. And yet, what we call the Precious Wood, they call accursed: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” If a criminal is raised upon a cross, what final say does the wood itself have in the matter? What responsibility does it have? But let us suppose that a piece of wood has been stained with the blood of a criminal. Is that wood therefore accursed, an object of wrath? Yet from the moment the blood of God was poured out upon that wood... Was Christ sinful or lawless? Or was He treated as lawless? He went up as though He were lawless—not lawless, but treated as lawless.
We ought to know how to interpret that type of the serpent lifted up in the wilderness. But it comes later in the proper sequence, and when we reach that point I shall explain it to you; you will see the meaning of every detail. From the moment this wood was soaked with the Most Holy Blood of God, what did that wood become? Is it accursed? What is it? The wood is holy. That is why we call it the Precious Wood: because it is soaked with the Precious Blood of God. That is why we call it the Precious Wood. How then do you dare call it an instrument of murder, wood that should have been thrown away, whose very shape should never even enter your mind? Why? Satan says such things. And as for man, who was redeemed through the Cross—is it not the Redeemer, the Crucified One, together with the Cross? After all, the early Church...
from which you come, held this Precious Cross in the highest honor. When someone was baptized, the first thing the bishop of that time would do was give him a cedar cross, a wooden cross, to wear around his neck. He placed the Crucified One in his heart and also gave him the Cross to wear upon his body.
This combination is necessary. It is not enough for me to wear the Crucified One outwardly if I do not have the Crucified One in my heart.
What did we say about our Most Holy Theotokos, who first appears in Paradise? The Precious Cross also first appears there, in Paradise. Do you know what the divine John Chrysostom says? In Paradise, he says, there were three kinds of wood—that is, three kinds of trees. From one kind of tree Adam was to eat in order to live; from another kind he was not to eat, lest he die—the tree of knowledge. And in the center of Paradise, he says, there was another tree, from which he would have eaten and lived if he had obeyed.
The tree of life—communion. Some people say, “The rod came from Paradise.” And we use that saying when people strike their wives, their children, their brothers, or even their animals. But that is not why the rod came from Paradise. There is a meaning and a cause behind the saying. More specifically, this is not the interpretation in itself; it has another meaning. For if we examine where the tree stood, where it was found, and where the wood upon which our Christ was crucified was cut down, other things will be revealed. In Jerusalem there is a monastery bearing the same name: the Monastery of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross.
When someone goes there, he will see the details depicted in relief upon the walls, and he will also find the root of the tree from which the Precious and Life-Giving Cross came. Unfortunately, neither do I have enough days, nor do I have my slides of Jerusalem with me to show you these events. Allow me to tell the story from memory. Keep it in mind and verify it when you have the opportunity. Listen, then, to this account. “The wood came from Paradise”—and there is a reason for this saying. We must go back to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Before Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, Abraham was counted worthy at the oak of Mamre to receive the Holy Trinity as his guests, under the type of three angels.
If you look, iconography has preserved the detail that the angels held a scepter. Have you seen our Most Holy Theotokos—or rather, the Archangel—at the Annunciation, as shown in Orthodox iconography, not holding a lily? The Archangel approaches with a scepter and says to the Most Holy Theotokos, “Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear,” and so forth. This shows that he comes from the great royal court above the heavens, from the Lord of Sabaoth, from the Holy Trinity above. The three angels appear holding three torches—three, as I told you... what did I call them? Scepters, not Cyprus.
A scepter, yes—not Cyprus.
What does Abraham call it? A scepter, yes—something showing that each one has been sent to that place. That is why the hymn says, “The chief commander among the angels was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, ‘Rejoice.’” Look at what I am holding. I am not the apostate, the devil, coming from the earth. I come from above. Look—this shows who I am and what I seek. So these three angels each held a scepter. When they departed and went to destroy Sodom—those of you who have the Old Testament will find what I am telling you in the eighteenth chapter of Genesis. Read it calmly and carefully, and you will find these things there. When the Holy Trinity departed from that place, the three torches, these three scepters, were left behind with Abraham.
What happened next, do you suppose? They departed to destroy the Five Cities. One exception was made in the Five Cities: the family of Lot, as you will remember from religious instruction at school. And not even the whole family, because his sons-in-law refused to follow. Mrs. Lot, because of her curiosity, remained on the road as a pillar of salt, and only the elder and his two daughters were saved. In any event, after the destruction, when the father and his two daughters were left alone, we read in the nineteenth chapter of Genesis that the daughters agreed together to make their father drunk and lie with him. And so this act took place over two nights—unfortunately or fortunately, I do not know what I should call it now.
One daughter did so on the first night, and the other on the following night, and both became pregnant, because after the general destruction they lacked the patient endurance to wait for men and the rest of humanity to appear again so that they might bear children. But when, to use one of our common expressions, his head cleared from the wine and he saw, learned, and was informed that his daughters were pregnant by him—there was no law at that time, though some people are scandalized—his conscience nevertheless spoke within him and reproved him. So he ran to his uncle Abraham. What was Abraham’s relation to Lot? Lot was his brother’s son. And Lot told him, “This is what I have done.” He confessed it to the elder Abraham, and Abraham comforted him, in any event.
Lot asked Abraham, “But will God forgive me for this? You forgive me and comfort me, and I thank you. But will God forgive me? Give me some sign so that I may be consoled.” This still happens to many of us. Satan whispers it into our ear: “Yes, my spiritual father told me such and such, but within myself I feel...” If we have committed serious, filthy deeds, the matter does not end there. Abraham told him, “Take these three torches”—that is how the account puts it—“go and plant them together, and carry water from the Jordan to water them.” Quite a task for him, was it not? “And when they sprout, know that God has accepted your metanoia, your repentance, and that all is set right between you and Him.”
Lot took them, went, and planted them. Then, with a little donkey—every icon and every scene is preserved in the Holy Monastery of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross in Jerusalem; I have photographed them in detail for my slides—he began carrying waterskins full of water from the Jordan. But the devil would go and pierce the waterskins. Many years passed, and Lot could not manage to bring the water. At last, after many years, God had compassion on him and no longer permitted Satan to pierce his waterskin, so he brought the water. The moment he poured it out, the shoots sprouted, took root, and grew by themselves into a single, enormous, threefold tree.
I do not know whether you have ever read the Church books, but read the prophecies from Isaiah appointed for the eve of the feast of the Cross, at Vespers. There you will find mention of cypress, pine, and cedar: one piece of wood, one tree in three forms, made up of cedar, pine, and cypress. So this tree grew and remained there. Then the Temple of Solomon enters the story. While they were cutting long openings—I do not know exactly for what purpose—and preparing timber needed for the construction, they cut a beam from this tree, first measuring the place where they intended to put it.
They cut the beam from that tree and carried it on their shoulders to put it in place. When they arrived and set it there, it projected too far on one side. “That is strange. We must have measured it wrongly.” They went to fit it into another opening of roughly the same size, but there it proved too short. One moment it was too short and the next too long. “Leave it. We must have made a mistake. Let us put it aside and, as the work continues, use it somewhere else where it fits. Let us neither cut it nor throw it away.” Indeed, at another stage of the construction, the men in charge said that a beam of those dimensions could be placed in a certain spot. They went to install it, and it was too short. They set it down, measured it, and tried again—then it was too long.
This aroused their curiosity. What was happening? However many times they tried, they could not put it in place, because they said, “Should we cut it? And what if it then proves too short?” So they threw it into a corner as accursed wood, as though it were wood infested with demons. From then on, Jews passing by would spit upon it and stone it. Then came the events of Christ’s Passion, and the call went out for the Crucifixion: “Bring that wood over here. At one moment we will crucify Him upon it; at another it will pull and tear Him; at another it will crush Him.” They did not crucify Him upon it merely because it was the most despised or accursed wood. They crucified Him there to make His death even more shameful. They crucified Him out of malice.
Yes, this wood comes from Paradise. The Holy Trinity brought it there, and here it has its foundation and root. Thus, the saying we hear has its reason. This is apart from the fact that sometimes our parents may need to give us a beating. As Solomon and Sirach say, we should not spare the rod. Sometimes we need a slap as well. Do not listen to modern pedagogy; the children will break our heads. They must be kept in check somehow, as much as we can and with discernment—not venting our anger upon the child or striking the child simply to relieve ourselves. In any event, that belongs to another subject. So this saying has its reason and belongs to the history handed down by our Tradition concerning the Precious Cross. And then, after that...
If one wished to follow the chronology, the Precious Cross appears again. Do you know where we meet it? We meet it where we also meet the one who was to be crucified upon it: in Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac. If you read the account of Abraham’s sacrifice—that is, the sacrifice of Isaac—you will find Golgotha, you will find the Cross, you will find the Lamb of God being crucified, and so forth. You will remember it from school. Let me repeat it because it is relevant here. “Abraham, take your child and go sacrifice him.” His only-begotten son. Abraham could have argued, “What did You tell me yesterday? Did You not tell me that in him all the families of the earth would be blessed? Today You tell me something else.”
“Are You telling the truth? Were You telling the truth yesterday, or now, when You tell me to kill him?” But there was not a word of argument. Arguments have no place before God, and I say this emphatically. We all want to correct even God. We force God’s commandments into the mold of our own reasoning. We judge them on our scales and measure them with our own measuring rod. Nothing of the sort. He is God. Josephus says, “Where God is, there is no room to ask how.” And so God did not tell Abraham where he was going. Abraham set out, loaded wood onto a mule, and took servants with him. They journeyed on. On the third day, He told him, “Stop and unload the wood.” So Abraham unloaded the wood and placed it upon Isaac. Then he told the servants, “Remain here with the animal.”
“The boy and I will go and offer the sacrifice, and we will return together.” As they went on their way, Abraham and Isaac began to speak. Isaac said to Abraham, his father, “Father, my father, I am carrying the wood.”
“And you are carrying the fire. But where is the sheep? What are we going to sacrifice?” You understand what a sword those words were in the father’s heart. What did Abraham say then? “God will provide the sacrifice Himself.” And they continued on their way. So Isaac, bearing the wood, was ascending toward Golgotha eighteen hundred years before Christ. Do you know that the place where Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac is only fifty meters, as the crow flies, from the Golgotha where Christ was crucified? Did you know that? That place still exists to this day. I have photographed it and venerated it, and the tree I am about to tell you of is still there as well.
They reached the summit, arranged the altar, and laid the wood upon it.
They prepared the fire and laid down the wood. Then Abraham seized Isaac, as we might say, by the collar, laid him firmly upon the altar, and raised the knife. The sacrifice is portrayed exactly. Our Christ came as an innocent lamb before the shearer and did not resist. Isaac must have been a strong young man to carry such a load of wood upon his back. If he was twenty-five or thirty years old, he could have struck the elderly Abraham—who was already well over a hundred, since Abraham had been about a hundred when Isaac was born—and knocked him out. Yet Isaac submitted, in a certain way, just as Christ would later submit. Then the angel’s voice was heard, saying, “Abraham, Abraham, do not lay your hand upon the boy.” And Abraham turned to look.
It was as though God were saying to him, “The type, the prophetic foreshadowing, is enough. I want nothing more. This is the image I want you to set forth, because one day My own Son will come with His own wood upon His back and will be sacrificed here, and His blood will save you all. Even if the boy’s blood were shed, it would accomplish nothing. I want you only to enact this type.” Abraham turned and saw behind him a ram. According to Holy Scripture, in Genesis chapter 22, it was caught by its horns in a tree. Do you know what the text calls that tree? Sabek. And do you know what that means? “The plant of forgiveness.” Here we see the Precious Cross—the wood together with the lamb. “I have My own Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world, who will one day be sacrificed. I thank you; I require nothing more from you. I desire only this type, this prophetic foreshadowing.” That tree is a kind of olive tree.
The same plant is there upon Moriah, at Golgotha. There is the Cross of our Christ, foreshadowed eighteen hundred years beforehand, and only fifty paces away is the place where Abraham raised the altar. Behold, then: Christ bears His own wood upon His back and is crucified on Golgotha. And behold Abraham, with his son Isaac bearing his own wood—Isaac, in every respect a type and foreshadowing of Christ—going there to be sacrificed as well. Is the Cross revealed here or not? Some people tell us that the Cross is an instrument of murder. The Cross is not an instrument of murder. But our time has run out, and so that we do not spoil the subject, if our Lord permits, through the grace of the Precious Cross and the prayers of the Fathers here, we will continue tomorrow.

Κακό σου κάνω εσένα; Και τι κακό κάνω εγώ και πού αντιβαίνω τη Γραφή; Άλλωστε το εδάφιο αυτό λέει εκείνο που κάνουμε εμείς. Έχετε προσέξει τι λέει το εδάφιο; Το εδάφιο λέει: μεταξύ Θεού —προσέξτε το χέρι μου— Θεού και ανθρώπων, Ιησούς μεσίτης. Μεσολαβεί, είναι Πρεσβευτής ο Ιησούς. Εμείς τι λέμε, που κόπτονται αυτοί ότι χαλάμε τη Γραφή; Εμείς τι λέμε; «Φύγε, Κύριε, από εκεί να βάλουμε την Παναγία να μεσιτεύσει στον Πατέρα»; Λέμε τέτοιο πράγμα εμείς, εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι;
Ακούμε και επιτίθενται αυτοί μέρα νύχτα κατά της Παναγίας μας, να τη βγάλουμε από τη μέση και να μην την παρακαλέσουμε ποτέ, να πάμε απευθείας στον Χριστό. Να πάμε και απευθείας στον Χριστό, δεν μας κλείνει την πόρτα. Αλλά τι είναι εκείνο που γκρεμίζω; Τι είναι εκείνο που σε πειράζει; Τι είναι εκείνο που σε τρώει, ώστε εγώ να μην χρησιμοποιήσω και την Παναγία; Άλλωστε εγώ την Παναγία μου δεν τη βάζω στη θέση του Χριστού μου. Δεν τη βάζω μεταξύ πιστού και Θεού, τη Θεοτόκο τη βάζω μεταξύ πιστού και Χριστού. Τι λέμε εμείς στην Εκκλησία μας τόσο απροσεχώς; Δεν λέμε «Ταις πρεσβείαις της Θεοτόκου, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς»; Όχι «Πάτερ, σώσον ημάς»· «Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς». Τι πάει να πει αυτό; Ότι εμείς τη βάζουμε μεταξύ πιστού και Χριστού την Παναγία μας. Το εδάφιο μένει ακέραιο. Και γιατί λέμε εμείς «πρέσβευε»;
